/an/ I seriously don't know what to do. My friends pet just died and I'm looking to replace it. She wants a "little cute" dog, like a Pomeranian or a Maltese.

Where do I go to get these kind? People say you shouldn't buy em in pet stores or from breeders because they'll die in a few weeks. So I tried looking in adoption centers, but they have dogs that have all kinds of diseases and mental issues.

Where the fuck can I find a dog down here in South Florida?

the dogs ive gotten from adoption centers arent screwed up. some come from owners that move, others come from pregnant mothers.
if youre not going to try any of those 2, im not sure where you can get one.

as an adoption center, we wouldn't adopt out dogs that were sick, even short term illnesses. We would wait till they were better, or at least inform the new parent that they were sick.

Just go to the shelter!

If you go to a shelter expect to visit several times because small dogs go quickly in shelters. Good luck finding what you need.

I've owned several poms and if she gets emotionally attached to animals I would not recommend it. Most have horrible last years of life. Their esophagus starts to collapse and they develop these coughing fits and its really sad.

While there is medication only one of my dogs responded well to it.

he's young, and poodles are really energetic, so she should be ready for a ball of energy.

Little dogs are silly ang agressive. They should be on a BSL list instead of pit bulls and caucasian-s.
ps. Poodle is so much smarter than pomeranian.

this is completely true. they wheeze and choke and it's really gross. they're terribly nasty and awful stupid little animals, get a doberman for the woman- she'll appreciate it more when it saves her life.

If you get a dog thats not healthy from a pet store flip a bitch at them and threaten to sue them. Animal cruelty and shit might scare them.

My first dog was from the pound and is the best dog I've ever had (well, my parents ever had while I lived with them). She was found in a box up an old highway and is afraid of the weirdest things. Lighters, Lazar Lights, bottles being crushed(the noise), even if I crack my knuckles she runs away, Fireworks shit like that. Oddly enough though she isnt afraid of the shotguns while we are up int he woods... crazy eh?

But she is the best dog I've ever had.. Smartest, most obedient, loving, ect.

Don't be afraid to get a dog at the pound or anywhere else like that. I will admit that id rather get a dog from a place where I could meet both the mother and the father of the dog and the owners so I can see several things...

How the puppies parents act around people and how their personality are. How the owners treat their dogs. random obvious shit like that.

>People say you shouldn't buy em in pet stores or from breeders because they'll die in a few weeks.

You shouldn't buy dogs from pet stores because they almost all buy from 'puppy-mills' which breed dogs in tiny cramped cages without screening for genetic conditions and the dogs are almost always weaned too early. It's a form of factory-farming. Even stores that adamantly dent buying from puppy-mills buy from puppy-mills; they can get away with it because 'puppy-mill' isn't a legal definition.

All dogs come from either a puppy-mill, hobby breeder, or 'backyard-breeder' originally. It isn't as if they're wild-caught, and puppies bought from a breeder aren't likely to die on you unless someone's doing something extremely wrong. Otherwise there wouldn't be so many dogs in shelters.

tl;dr
The reason adoption centers/shelters are the best option is for ethical reasons, not because puppies from anywhere else are time bombs.

I recommend going to a shelter..there's so many dogs out there in need of homes that its almost sad to buy an overpriced one at a pet store instead.

A lot of pet stores get their puppies from puppy mills..this is not always the case, though. I used to work at a mall pet store that got their puppies from licensed breeders and all that..but they were overpriced and a lot of them had kennel cough (but this is easily treated and happens a lot where there's a high population of puppies).

Really..avoid going to an overpriced (or cheap puppy mill) pet store where the animals are gonna be bought anyway..go to a shelter and give a puppy that would otherwise be euthanized (quite possibly) a warm, loving home..

Puppy mills are licensed breeders.

exactly.

The problem with getting puppies from pet stores even if they buy from local breeders is that the breeder often sells the "quality" puppies and gives the pet store the ones with poor temperament. Direct from a reputable breeder is best, it they offer to take back a puppy if you can keep it later or if it develops a medical condition is a good sign. The breeders may be more expensive than back yard breeders but down the road it will save you money and heartache as the back yard breeders do not usually medically screen their dog and they end up developing health problems from careless breeding.

I'm another pet store worker saying don't buy from pet stores for the reasons other anons mentioned, but also you are being overcharged in pet stores. The one I work at buys puppy mill dogs at $99 each, doesn't do shit with them, yet sells them between $600-$1200 no matter what the breed is. You can find dogs from breeders in my area for less than half those prices with much better genetic quality. Pet stores are total ripoffs that only care to turn a massive profit and are likely to sell you a sick dog because the employees are so inexperienced with the early signs of illnesses.
