Feral cat colony help John
Hey /an/,
When I went local store i seen this feral cat staring at me so I approached it and it ran off. I decided to follow it a bit and what i seen next shocked me. Atleast 50+ cats were all fighting for food behind a dumpster. They were hunched around a single plate of food and a couple of cans. Some of the adults seen me from 20 feet away and ran for cover while the kittens decided to stay to take this advantage for more food. I came closer because I know that kittens can be socialized but it was clear that these kittens had no contact with humans because they ran off and hid as well. These kittens were days old and it seems that they were mating at an very fast rate because the cats werent there a few months ago. So my question for you /an/ is, should i be doing something about this? Its obvious that they are very wild and arent neutered and I can see this becoming a serious problem in the future. The cats were very thin and the person who was feeding them will not be able to accomadate future generations of cats (and they are hardly doing a good job now). I figure some of the younger kittens can be captured and put up for adoption while the older cats can be neutured. However, as of now i havent done anything. I have been thinking about it for hours and feel that this will haunt me for a long time if I dont do anything. My brother says I shouldnt worry thats it shouldnt be any of my concern but still i would like some closure.

1) get poison
2) get cat food
3) place poison on cat food
4) place it in area
5) problem solved?

maybe you could try trapping them with a large livetrap, sending the kittens to a shelter as they're likely not beyond rehabilitation, and then see if you can get the adults spayed or neutered? I know that it sounds like a lot of money, but usually if local vets find out its for a feral cat colony they'll either lower their prices or do it for free

Where would i be able to get a large livetrap?
>> Anonymous
perhaps the smarter thing to do would call animal control, they have the resources to collect these cats and who knows, maybe some of them will get domesticated enough to be introduced into home somewhere.
>> AGirlOnTheNet !VuRBSuhcsw
Try starting a catch and release program. Some states do this. They catch feral cats, spay/neuter them, and then release them back in their territory. Cats are very territorial, and if a feral cat is caught and removed from the area, more cats will just take its place and make the problem of breeding worse. Talk to your local animal shelters or the local animal control officers and see what can be done about it. You may be able to put the kittens up for adoption, but the older ones would most likely be put to sleep. So a catch and release program would be a good choice.

2. Let them do their own thing and more than likely most of them die but a few live and may be even picked up.

Result # 1: Reduces the chance of more starving, flea ridden, inbred and over populated cats.

Result # 2: They continue to starve, fight for survival, more over breeding, they die miserable and even the kittens suffer. Repeat.

You are fucking stupid.

Call animal control.

The problem with leaving an intact breeding colony is that not only do they suffer, but they are a health risk to themselves. Feline Leukemia, FIV, parasites, and even Distemper will become a rampant problem for that area (because these cats do not stay in one place all day and night, they roam.)

Kindest thing is for AC to come and trap them, euthanize those that are unsalvageable and host those that are ideal for adoption. Those left out from group A and B get desexed and returned to where they were found, keeping the territory occupied with felines but controlling the population explosion from happening again.

The best cat I ever had was a rescued kitten, though the horrible injury that took an eye was probably what made it such a loyal and awesome cat.

As a result, I'm a pansy when it comes to feral cats, I say save the kittens, catch/release program even if it probably won't work.

Sorry, I don't have a god complex and prefer to let life sort itself out as opposed to the deluded thought that killing a few cats that are trying to survive will somehow help them be better.

Feral cats spread disease and rape local wildlife populations. They also can attract more pests such as coyotes. I'd call animal control and have most of them destroyed. You can't save 'em all.
>> Anonymous
Look for local feral cat control places online. They will trap, alter, and release all animals back to where they came from provided they have a manager to feed the colony...or you volunteer to.

You should notify animal control. They should be destroyed. The few kittens who are able to be socialized should be neutered and adopted out. Avoid giving your name and contact information, as you will be charged for it. The animal control unit should use the taxpayer's funds for this, but they will most likely try to stick you with the bill... you can do the math... fixing and putting down animals costs about 100 bucks per animal.

TNR and TTVAR are the only no-kill solutions that both prevent huge colonies from developing and manage them if they've already gotten to that point. Some organizations and local governments, like one of my local SPCAs and my county's animal services department, will actually provide incentives or have free programs already in place. Others will just have insta-kill programs (no holding period), so do your research before calling anyone with the colony's location.

OP here, I went back to the area today to observe the cats again and to get the exact location to call a feral cat rescue. I brought some food but they wouldnt come near it with me there and they seemed like they were waiting for me to leave. Then this old angry and possibly insane lady pulled into the lot and was yelling at me for scaring them and trying to hurt them. According to her teenagers would come and take a couple of cats and do sadistic stuff to them and eventually kill them. She got pissed off when i said i was going to call the rescue because she believes that they would kill them because there are too many. She didnt seem concerned about the health problems or how these cats threaten some of the local species here. Her exact quote was "I dont give a fuck about some stupid birds". She told me that she takes the kittens that arent afraid of her to her home and that she has over 20 cats from this particular colony and implied that she has alot more cats aswell. She told me she noticed the cats here 2 months ago and that there were only 3 then picking threw the dumpster. She assured me that she was taking good care of them even though she only had like 15 bucks worth of food to feed all 50-60 cats that are there. The cats werent too fond of her despite her claim that they trust her. I dont think that they would be able to take the kittens for adoption now since she already took the cream of the crop. However, Iam thinking about finding out where she lives and getting her busted for animal hoarding. Right now I will call a couple of animal shelters and a new york city feral cat organization to hopefully take care of this problem and not charge me. Next time I will get the ladies license plate and report her to police. I hope that this will finally get the cats out of my mind because I have been thinking about it all day.

Humans virtually have to apply higher standards of morality to humans than to other animals. We can't possibly be as good to all animals as we are to humans, so the only option if we want equality is to be as bad to humans as we are to other animals.
>> Anonymous
>>191064
This is too many cats to practically catch and neuter. That works for a few strays, but a population that has been breeding out of control for a long time will be nearly impossible to control without killing.
>> Anonymous
>>191077
organize an adoption party van to the location instead then?
>> Anonymous
>>191105
Ehh, I dunno. If it were feasible to place that many cats all at once, shelters would be empty instead of needing to kill half the animals they receive. And if you could only get a realistic number adopted, it would barely dent the population.

Honestly, the only humane method for population control is to catch a lot of the animal in question, sterilize, and rerelease the sterile animals to compete with the fertile ones. This works spectacularly for insects because you can just zap them with radiation, but that doesn't work as well on mammals, and it's harder to catch a ton of cats anyway.

those cats need to be killed. they're probably full of worms anyways.

That's true but the sterilized cats can still spread disease, attract predators, and hurt local wildlife. I think if you consider all the factors, not just 'omg be humane to kitties' than euthanasia is the best option of the unadotpables.

I hear antifreeze does the job, since they are attracted to it and it will kill them.
>> Anonymous
>>191730
Somebody doesn't do their research, or they would have learned that most antifreeze no longer contains the chemical that kills cats and babbys.

Call animal control, both on the cats, and the cat lady. She has created this problem by feeding them. The kittens are probably impossible to socialize.
>> Anonymous
duh, call animal control and animal control will do whatever they are trained and funded to do.
>> Anonymous
oh and tell animal control about the crazy lady so they can go take her feral diseased cats away from her before they breed into a whole new giant underfed colony.
>> Antifreeze Anonymous
Not so fast. There are non-tozic types of antifreeze on the market, but there is still a lot of old fashioned, highly toxic, ethylene glycol on the market. Much of it has additive to make it bitter instead of sweet, but even that is not universal.

As far as the cats, I'd call animal control and let them sort it out.
