Choosing a single animal from a bunch Anonymous
I've noticed that during all the times in my life when I was given the choice to choose a pet, I always chose the small timid one out of the bunch. I think it's because I feel sorry for the timid ones. I imagine that people dislike anything but the most energetic and playful.

What do you typically look for when choosing a certain cat, dog, or whatever?

I choose the oldest one. Because otherwise he/she will never be chosen.

Picking the small/timid/blind/deaf/crippled animal is what I like to call "damaged goods syndrome". Picking the "damaged" one not because they are weak but because they are unique, usually the uniqueness in pet animals (dogs, cats. etc.) is a birth defect or at very least a different coat color than the rest of the litter.

Yea. I think its kinda dumb that people always go for the "runt". These are the ones that nature has decided arent fit enough to survive. Economicly they are a waste to have and thats why they were usually left to die until movies like Babe came out.

Now everyone wants the weakling. Not me, Ill take the strong healthy one anyday.

When my family was choosing our dog 14 or so years ago, my dad told me to run around with the puppies, and he watched for whichever one stayed closest to me. I think he wanted to chose the dog base on how willing she was to follow humans and speed (so it could go jogging with my mom). She was really in shape for a lab. The vet always commented that our dog barely looked like a lab because she was so skinny. She doesn't go running anymore though... too old ;_;

That kind of philosophy should be applied to people too, amirite?

I choose my last dog because she was the more fat ^^

I pick the black animals because I know, statisticly speaking, it will be put down if I don't. In amer'ka there's an epidemic of black animals being put to sleep because people are so fucking stupid and superstitious. Google "black dog syndrome" if you don't believe me..

Same here except that's because I have low self-esteem.

That's awful. I'm sure it has roots in western religion than anything else.

Yes only the strong should survive

I'll be choosing a puppy soon from a local breeder, and I think I might end up choosing the one between both hyper/energetic and shy/timid.

I usually don't care about color. I also LOVE the runts of the group.

Whichever one's left at the end of the litter, usually. I'm not bothered which one I get - I doubt I'd be thinking the week after, "Aww shit, I wish I'd gotten the tabby and white kitten instead. The one I chose was a real dissapointment..."

I usually pick the one that looks intelligent and alert. Or whichever one just strikes me whichever way. Doesn't really matter what color they are or whatever.

Another person that chooses the one that chooses me.

I spent forever looking for my current dog, mainly because my family was pretty poor back when I was 10. She was mistreated (nothing horrible, just not washed properly or groomed, etc) and such and not a "cool breed" but turned out to be an amazingly awesome dog.

Also, catballs.

This.

I also will almost always go for the friendly, healthy, but sleepy kitten. Every time we've picked the sleepy kitten, we've gotten wonderfully social calm cats who are barely if ever shy, far less neurotic than normal, and willing to sleep curled up near me for hours.

I take the animal that looks most sympathetic to me - can be timid, hyperactive, smart or somewhat stupid, but always gentle and drawn to humans.

I have quite some experience with dogs and especially cats and can pretty much judge a puppys/kittens character by watching it for some time. Doesn't really work with other animals, tho...

I try to pick the one that is social, not in the "LOOK AT ME MY PAW IS STICKING OUT OF THE CAGE AND I'M MEOWING GIVE ME ATTENTION NAO" way, but more the "Hi, I'd like to know you better" way.
Also, lap kittens.

I chose two cats from the shelter, initially, I narrowed it down to ones that came over or looked interested when you looked in their cage and made the cat summon noise, then got a few out and chose the friendliest, most interactive ones that seemed to enjoy being petted and picked up the most.

I usually pick the largest, bravest one. I like something thats not going to run from me or be afraid of the vacuum, car, ect. Usually the oldest one I can get my hands on.
