So /an/ a memory from way back struck me and is refusing to leave me alone until I figure what the hell happened exactly.

My family and I were flying either to or from Japan, and we were about an hour away from any land. I was bored and looked out the window down at the water when I see between some of the clouds, a ripple in the water. like the one in the picture. At the time I think I passed it off as being from a whale or a boat, which seemed perfectly logical to a 3 year old.

But now that I remember this event 15 years later, I know that a ripple from a whale or boat would look different, and I sure as hell wouldn't be able to see them from a plane window. Nothing fell by the plane that anyone that was a passenger knew of (and if the pilot noticed he didn't say anything), or else my mom would have paid more attention to me when I tried to point it out.

The only theory I have is that it was caused by an earthquake. But I dunno if even that's right. So /an/ I ask you, what the hell would have cause such a big ripple like that in the ocean?

Obviously the only answer is a giant squid.

This Anon is right. This sort of thing belongs to /x/.

But don't expect to get any serious replies. (That goes for her as well, unfortunately.)

if you look up the mechanics of tsunami waves caused by earthquakes they've got a really long frequency. From the standpoint of a ship at sea they would be largely unnoticeable (the ocean would gradually just rise about a foot, stay there for a bit, and then recede) it's only once it hit's land that waves get shorter and taller. So probably not earthquake waves.

Maybe gases escaping to the surface?

Go to /x/, tell them you think it's a USO

I figured I'd try here because I really didn't think it counted as paranormal. lol I really didn't expect any serious answers either, was hoping had some semblance of an idea though.

Seems to have a plausible explanation, maybe I will go bug /x/ for the luls.

You're probably remembering something that didn't happen.

It did happen. I thought that was a possibility too, but my mom remembers me trying to tell her about it.

I remember laying in bed one night and seeing a face in my room and heard it talking to me once when I was sick as a young child. That doesn't mean it happened though.

well believe what you wish, I'm about 99% sure that it did happen.

Well the area around japan is extremely geologically active, so it could be an earthquake.

or a lot of whales farted at once and created a giant bubble to make that ripple.

When a sinkhole appears underwater, that's generally how the ripples look like. Don't ask me if that kind of thing's happened anywhere near Japan though.

semi related story to op's:

one time when flying back to the states from japan, it was night outside, and we were still a few hours away from land

I lifted up the shade and looked outside, and saw huge circular areas on the surface of the ocean that looked like they were lit by orange sodium vapor lamps. at the height we were flying, they would have to be literally the size of cities.
