First of all, do a thorough clean-out of the house (with vacuum cleaner and a bottle of methylated spirits) and make sure there is nothing wrong with your plumbing - no drips or leaks. Replace rubber washers on taps if you must. Cockroaches are MORE attracted to moisture than anything else.
Roaches can and will eat ANYTHING, so even if you consider your apartment clean, the roaches can love it. Examples are stacks of damp newspapers, crumbs fallen out in the pantry, contents of your kitchen rubbish bin and the kitchen drains, slimy mold growing on pipes and bathroom walls.
Now, get some boric acid and sprinkle that stuff in places where roaches are likely to be. Common places are behind kickboards of kitchen cabinets, behind bathroom cabinets, in cracks in the walls and holes. Easiest way to stuff it in cracks and holes is to get or make a funnel out of cardboard and tipping the powder in.
Then get some roach gel and seal all the outside entrances where roaches can come in. Balconies, window frames, under the door and around the doorframe.
Now that you're done with it, vacuum the house regularly to clear out the roach carcasses. Remember to do this again after about 3 months.
