ITT: unique animals Anonymous
Alright /an/, let's see if we can collect the greatest animals known to man in one thread. This is simple. All I want is:

- A picture of the animal (no shit)
- Name of the animal
- Why it's unique (unique predatory technique, strongest jaw, best camouflage, etc.)
- A number relating to its uniqueness (if applicable

I'll start us off with an easy one.

- Peregrine falcon
- Fastest bird in the world
- It can reach speeds of up to 322 km/h

Ladies and gentlemen, behold: The Archer Fish

- Archer Fish
- Spits water that it collects in its mouth to knock down insects above the water and is able to compensate for light refraction
- It can hit prey at greater angles than a perpendicular angle without losing on accuracy (from wikipedia)
>> Anonymous

- Antlion
- Digs "slippery" pits in sand in order to trap its prey
- The pits are usually 2 inches deep and 3 inches wide at the edge

- Blue whale
- Largest animal in the world
- The largest Blue Whale accurately weighed by NMML scientists to date was a female that weighed 177 tonnes

2 cool ones comes to mind, but i dont know their names, both sea creatures:
1. some cucumber thing that attack its preys with a needle thing (that strikes you at the speed of a bullet or something) and its poison can kill you in seconds (has killed some humans already)
2. some shrimp species (i think) has organs that creates vibrations that can heat up the water to molten temps in an instant, results in 'blasts' stunning its preys

- jackson's chameleon
- Has a tongue the length of its body, which it uses to catch its prey. 360 degree rotational eyes which see individually. Color changing ability.
- 3 horns.

Second one is a

- Mantis shrimp
- Both types strike by rapidly unfolding and swinging their raptorial claws at the prey, and are capable of inflicting serious damage on victims significantly greater in size than themselves. In smashers, these two weapons are employed with blinding quickness, with an acceleration of 10,400 g and speeds of 23 m/s from a standing start [5]. Because they strike so rapidly, they generate cavitation bubbles between the appendage and the striking surface [5]. The collapse of these cavitation bubbles produce measurable forces on their prey in addition to the instantaneous forces of 1,500 N that are caused by the impact of the appendage against the striking surface, which means that the prey is hit twice by a single strike; first by the claw and then by the collapsing cavitation bubbles that immediately follows [6]. Even if the initial strike misses the prey, the resulting shock wave can be enough to kill or stun the prey.

The snap can also produce sonoluminescence from the collapsing bubble. This will produce a very small amount of light and high temperatures in the range of several thousand Kelvin within the collapsing bubble, although both the light and high temperatures are too weak and short-lived to be detected without advanced scientific equipment. The light emission and temperature increase probably have no biological significance but are rather side-effects of the rapid snapping motion. Pistol shrimp produce this effect in a very similar manner.

-Cymothoa Exigua, also known as OH SHIT WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT
-Only known parasite to actually functionally replace a part of a host's body. In this case it is the tongue; it passes food down into the fish's gullet, occasionally taking scraps for itself. The affects the fish little since the amount of food it takes is negligible. In fact, once the parasite sucks the blood from the tongue and causing it to atrophy, some pressure it actually relieved from the fish's circulatory system.
-Probably one of the more conceptually disgusting parasites, especially since they have been found within fishes' mouths on the supermarket shelf

-Feathers contain batrachotoxin, same poison found in some poison frogs
-"Batrachotoxin is one of the most potent toxins known. Extrapolating from the lethal dosage LD50 in rats, the lethal dose of this alkaloid in humans is estimated to be 1 to 2 µg/kg. Thus, the lethal dose for a 68 kg (150 pound) person would be approximately 100 micrograms, or equivalent to the weight of two grains of ordinary (fine) table salt (NaCl). Batrachotoxin is thus around fifteen times more potent than curare (another arrow poison used by South American Indians and derived from plants of the genera Strychnos and Curarea), and about ten times more potent than tetrodotoxin, from the puffer fish" - Wiki

A curse. The falcon is forced to gaze upon those imperfections we cannot see as though they were monstrous in size.

-American Crow (Scientific name is in the file name.)
-Uses tools and is one of the few animals besides humans to modify and create tools.
-Mated pairs form large families of up to 15 birds from several breeding seasons that remain together for many years. Offspring from a previous nesting season will usually remain with the family to help raise new offspring.

This is true for many ravens (For example the Common Northern Raven - corvus corax), not just the American raven.
Also they are able to speak learn single words and short sentences. Amazing animals.

They're marvelous birds, really. But still a bunch of nasty little fuckers. I get a god damn murder in my olive tree every god damn year. I even tried shooting a shotgun into the tree and they still wouldn't leave. Just got real pissy and louder.
