Hey /an/, how effective is a guard goose, compared to guard dogs?
Is it low maintenance too?
And can I play with it or will it be too aggressive?

Goose is more delicious if things go badly.

Geese can be pretty evil when they want to be, and anything that makes noise will scare off your average burglar. Plus they don't usually make you put them down if the bite the neighbor kid.

If you don't have a coyote problem in the area, geese are pretty effective as watchdogs, but they are VERY loud. Especially when they think there's food involved. I raised three of them from goslings (not from eggs, I bought them young), and at first they were cute, but they got big and noisy very fast. My biggest complaint with geese is that they shit everywhere and they shit often.

My geese were mean to other animals, but they would only "nibble" on me like they were preening, and they would always want to sit by me (which was cute until I would hear the "SPLORT" of a goose poop). If you give them a tub of water they'll float around more quietly and play a bit.

What would prevent me from hitting a goose with a stick and then having a goose for dinner?

The best strategy to prevent house robbery, you just have to get a new goose from time to time.
