Not really animals, and not strictly nature, but I didn't know where else to turn. My sisters got me this bonsai tree for Christmas, but they got rid of the tag telling me what set of care instructions to follow. I'm afraid I'm going to kill it before I even know how not to kill it. Can anyone tell me how to take care of this thing, or at least what kind of tree I'm dealing with? Or where to go to find out?

Gee, thanks. Seriously, any help? Or am I going to have to take this picture to the garden store with me and stalk through the aisles for it?

bonsai need light pruning every 2-3 months and need to be watered every morning or evening with one of them spray bottle thinghies to simulate rain/dew.
A cup of water poured carefully into the pot itself every day will do the trick for the roots.

When it flowers, avoid spraying the flowers with the water.

It's still a tree, so if you must keep it indoors, it needs to be kept in a sunny spot or even somewhere close to "outside" - say, a balcony.

They need a couple drops of liquid fertiliser twice a year - dilute with water, and don't pour it close to the roots or else you'll burn the roots.

"train" the tree with copper wire, always wrap the wire above the splitting section of a branch

water the shit outta it by submerging the entire bottom pot in a bucket of water then letting it drain to stop salts from forming, but this is done like every month

You guys rock. It's got a wire on it already, I'll read more into how that works soon. The guide has a few specific categories for soil (consistently moist, moderately moist, or dry) and light (sunny, part sun, low light). Can you tell which of those this would satisfy from the picture?

Well, it's a broad leafed plant, whatever it is, so it will benefit from a lot of sun, but paradoxically get "burnt" easily and would lose a lot of water from the sun too.

I'd say part sun, and keep it in a cool place so that the water in the pot doesn't heat up and literally boil the poor thing to death.

Its a ficus tree, they can spend their whole like indoors. Do best with indirect light mixed in with some direct every so often. Unlike most true bonsai trees they don't need to be outside most of the time. (Thats right /an/ your last japanese maple/juniper/whatever died because it was kept indoors.)

Right now it doesnt look very bonsaish to me becuase it is very over grown (imho). You first need to decide what style you want to emulate: Upright, Formal Upright, Root over rock, windswept etc...
Looks like upright is the way to go with that plant though windswpet may be alright to if you can bend it way to one side. The good thing about ficus is that they are very flexible almost forever.

Anyway, very hardy, most true bonsai rules/maintainence dont need to be followed. But they will grow to the size of a man if kept indoors in about 8 years.
