So I'd like to know what pets are illegal in NY. I'm not sure and it's not too easy to find or I'm just not looking right.

I know ferrets are. What about ducks?

I grew up in manhattan and we hatched baby ducks in my 4th grade classroom, so it would seem that ducks are indeed legal.

those little turtles you buy in chinatown are illegal, though.

I do have a 10 gallon tank left over from my gerbils but turtles weren't really on my list. I figure a duck might up and fly away and never come back too.

Really? my brother's 7th grade English teacher had a pet ferret named Rickey, or so I was told. Might you be referring to the city and not the state?

Maybe but it was only recently made illegal. 99 or something I think. I'll double check that.

The ferret ban only applies to all five boroughs (Queens, Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn, Staten Island) so you can own a ferret if you live outside of NYC.

Gambian rats, African porcupines, most monkeys, and pretty much anything imported from Africa (I'm not sure if prairie dogs are still banned, but they were once also on the list because of the monkeypox outbreak).
