So /an/, what's your opinion of Dalmatians?

I really want a playful dog that I can run with, that's easy to groom and fairly intelligent.
However, I've heard Dalmatians can be stupid, is this true?
I was also considering a border collie, but I don't think I'd be able to handle taking care of a coat like that.
So /an/, give me your expert opinion on this matter.

Nice dogs, they were bred to run alongside coaches, so perfect for running with. They can be a bit stupid, but no more so than any pure bred dog, and they're generally good natured.
>> tigerfeather !CrwtTbFNxQ
Dalmatians are not usually stupid (any dog of any breed can be stupid), just neurotic. They tend to be spazzy and frightened of dumb shit even when well socialized. Granted, I've met quite a few very nicely behaved dogs, but the majority are nutcases. On an unrelated note, border collie coats are not really that bad, they are more of a medium rather than a long coat. Just take the dog into the groomer twice yearly to blow out the undercoat, and comb once a week.

Either dog is going to be needing a lot of mental stimulation, the collie more so, so definitely check out some flyball or agility clubs around you. Keep up the running you mentioned, the dog will need it.

tl;dr: They are similar, get a mutt

My gf has a dalmatian, it's honestly the dumbest and most aggressive dog I've ever had to deal with in my life.

It's also the cligniest dog I've ever seen, my gf can even go to the toilet without the dog acting like she's been abandoned.

When I was little I used to live with my aunt who had a female one. Stupidest fucking dog ever. Completely ruined my dog's perfect behavior by teaching it to rummage through garbage, steal food, etc. etc.

Also, x-box hueg shits. I remember having to tip toe around the yard to avoid all the crap this dog put out.

ITT dogs that are smarter than their owners.

Bet all of you 10 dollars that the owner is the retard that fucked up the dog. Bet you 20 I could fix the dog in a month by giving it the training and exercise that's appropiate to the breed.

Think of it this way. Many people think their dog is smart for teaching it to not go through the garbage... and they don't. Wow, bravo!

Conversely... my dogs are so smart they know they can do it anyway and get away with it if I'm not around. Shocking, I know. Who was stupid here? Me, for letting them do what dogs do.

All the people who talk about their neurotic dogs that are "stupid" for having "undesirable HUMAN characteristics" despite being a dog... gives me a nice long laugh.

Dalmatians are intelligent, motivated, driven dogs. If you are too lazy, stupid, and incapable of harnessing that, like 99% of dog owners who pick these types of dogs up and are stunned when they are shitty companion dogs (No shit, sherlock, they are WORKING dogs).

I've never met a neurotic working dog that I couldn't enjoy just by harnessing his abundant energy and intelligence.
>> Gentleman !!i+ORwo+QIcw
dunno about relative intelligence but I'vw heard that dalmations are really not recommended as pets.
I had one, and it had a lot of health problems

I've owned two dalmatians. I have only one right now.
The first one was when I was younger and that was when my dad thought you had to beat a dog into submission and whenever it would do something it didn't like. She turned out to be aggressive when older, bit the mailman once or twice and suffered from growths and bad hip problems. He ruined a dog that could have been an amazing companion.

The dalmatian I have now is a wonderful dog. My father's friend found her brown and skinny on the road and we took her in. She was about two years old and she's the nicest dog I've ever met. She was also first afraid of men so we assumed she had been mistreated.

She's amazing with kids. They could tug on her ears, sit on her, push her around, generally annoy the piss out of her and she's just very patient with them. She's never bitten anyone, well behaved and laid back.

Only issues is that she's DEATHLY afraid of storms. She'll dive under the table, drool, shake, and just freak even if the storm is only passing. And she is starting to have hip problems, which is common for her breed.
We used to have problems with her going after our smaller pets, but she's learned to ignore them. Now she just kills the wild, small animals in the back yard.

She's also stupid as fuck. Sweet, but fucking stupid. Awesome dog.

Not as pets, no. Not that it ever stopped anyone.. you wonder why many dogs turn out bad? Because that warning is not heeded.

ITT: Anons who think they're qualified trainers.

Also, rummaging through garbage is a human characteristic? lolwut

Yeah, hobos do it all the time.

But in all seriousness, he was probably talking about the dogs doing something that they can get away with, because they know they can.
>> Niggerhusky Guy !!2YW0PJZXbhy
>>220594

Uh, no. Digging through the garbage is a undesirable trait for humans to have.

It's not a undesirable dog trait.

Anyone who picks up difficult dogs needs to read the book "The Other End of the Leash" at the very minimum. Or anyone that owns dogs, for that matter. Would teach you a lot about how stupid YOU are when it comes to dogs.

You give me a good chuckle, Niggerhusky Guy. You talk about training breed specific and all, but really, how many dogs read their breed standards? How many traits are so breed specific that you have to train that way? Your suggestions reek of pompous breeder elitism. Sure, your dogs are smart enough to know that they can go through the trash when you're not home, but why is that okay? Just because you have a dog that's smart enough to understand why and when punishment comes doesn't make the improved Knowledgeable Misbehavings okay. The point of having a trained animal is to make it more accepting of human ways, even if they do clash with dog views. If you want a wild animal, then let your dogs out in the backyard and let them destroy whatever they like. It's only bad behavior to humans, right?

No offense intended, mind you. =)

I've heard that most dalmatians are deaf. Any truth to that, or is it just internet bullshit?
>> Anonymous
>>220697

True to a degree. Some Dalmations that are bred for the perfectly spotted coat pattern are deaf.

Also, massive inbreeding means they're fucking GAWDASSDAMNIT STUPID. It is THE stupidest dog breed.

>>220569

OH FFS, it's a fucking hunting dog that can't even fucking hunt. If that's not called "stupid", I don't know what the fuck else is.
>> Niggerhusky Guy !!2YW0PJZXbhy
>>220700

....

It's NOT a hunting dog. It's a guard dog bred to run alongside coaches for long distances. So, it has a extreme guarding instinct (which most stupid owners turn into aggression) and extremely loyal and have almost unlimited stamina. So they need tons and tons of exercise or they will turn neurotic.

>>220692

I fucking hate this argument. Of course not every dog will follow the standard! It's a GUIDELINE, not a RULE.

If you get a dalmatian, you can reasonably assume it's going to be protective, need a TON of exercise, and will respond far better to postive training rather than dominance based training. It may, or may not, fit that way.

Ollie pretty much fits the standard, but both of my huskies in the past didn't. One wasn't very motivated to escape, and could be off-lead. The other didn't like pulling, which was okay.

But the guideline is there for a reason, and when you get a dog you expect it to follow the standard, and THEN adjust for the dog's personality afterwards.

The people with bad dalmatians are people who bought them for their looks, and tried to adjust the dog to THEIR imaginary standards. No shit that doesn't work. If they wanted a loyal, calm, and unenergetic dog... maybe they should have gotten the RIGHT breed.
>> Niggerhusky Guy !!2YW0PJZXbhy
I'm not going to blame anyone for getting a Golden Retriever and be surprised that it's far more high energy than the standard. That happens. But that's not the case with these dogs.

I mean, FFS, Nowdays lots of firemen have them. Not so much anymore, but they used to follow the fucking fire truck on foot to the fire!!!! If the standard was that useless, they would have gotten just any dog, instead of a dog that was bred to do this.

My point relating to the garbage is.. you got a dog that was smart enough to know it can raid the garbage can when you're not around. What do most people do? Punish them when they get home. What does the dog learn? Them coming home is a bad thing. Nothing about the garbage.

If you are lucky and have a dog that knows not to raid garbage when you're not home, then you're lucky. I've had a few dogs like that. But if they don't? Most people give up and call them stupid. NO! You CAN train it, but you have to THINK.

Unfortunately, most people are too incapable of this kind of training and just end up ruining the dog. Anything more than "No!" and "Sit", "Down", and most dog owners are mentally worn out on how to train the dog further.

Firemen stopped bringing along Dalmations because they would start eating the burned corpses.

Not to mention biting the onlookers and generally just getting in the fucking way. My neighbour down the street had a dalmatian when I was growing up, really dumb ass dog.
>> Anonymous
I see these dogs all the time barking in cars in parking lots, typically the supermarket. Just barking all the fucking time. Like they want to get out of the car and tear your liver out. I'm sorry OP, there are much nicer breeds of dogs out there. Dalmatians strike me as being aggressive and mean.

My gf's dalmatian is a retard, but she tells me that her previous one (died before I met her) was a complete teddy bear.

She was fat and had a million health problems tho.

the majority of dalmatians are high strung, can be aggressive and are high energy. that being said i knew one that was a sweetheart. You're taking a gamble though if you ask me. They also have a problem with deafness

adopt a pitbull. sweetest people dogs ever, and they can keep up with anyone activity wise.

Also dalmations are super inbred. Prone to blindness and what-not.

I have a dalmation. A lot of them are deaf, but really smart. They're good dogs, but mine gets kinda bitchy. She's also very spoiled, lol.

She's gotten to be pretty old now, but she's still full of life. It's so cute >w<

My border collie was fiendishly intelligent and knew how to get under my skin. For example, if he got mad at me, he'd shit on me while I was asleep. Real stealthy like, so I wouldn't notice until I woke up. I'm dead fucking serious.

I have a half pit bull half bull mastiff. the fucker is a big baby that lets my sister ride him and needs to be under the blankets.
