As for how smart cats really are, nobody knows for sure. They have a lot longer memory than dogs, longer than orangutans in fact! They also have primate-level visual memory. Where they lose to dogs, though, is in working memory. They are also less eager to please, less energetic and less motivated to learn tricks than dogs, which some people see as "stupidity". Actually the apparent difference between cat and dog intelligence is mostly due to instincts. Dogs being pack animals naturally behave in a way humans see as "smart", while the solitary, opportunistic nature of a cat makes them seem "stupid" when in actuality they view situations differently from humans and dogs. To test the intelligence of a cat, one must stop thinking like a large social animal and start thinking like a small solitary predator, which a lot of people (including some early researchers) have failed to do.
