Quick question. Say a bird such as the Red - Tailed Hawk (pictured) was eating its prey.

Now i've witnessed a red tail hawk, after getting a piece of meat down swivel its head and neck in a circular fashion. Is this done to help move the food down the throat or to help the bird place the food in its crop or something else?

nah, hawks are predators and they gotta be weary of others stealing their food.

thats all, just keeping a look out

iawtac, but op's suggestion seems probable too. could be both.

OP here, to clarify, its not a swivel such as an Owl. Think of a plot graph where an owl would swivel along the X axis, the behavior i saw was a swivel up and down.

I guess i could just call it an up and down movement with some subtle head side to side movement as well.

ah....well...then it might aide in swallowing..

I've seen this too. The only thing I could guess was to help it swallow. Maybe to get around a bone or something. =]
