I just walked into my room and thought I saw a grape on the floor... until it started crawling away.

What kind of spider is this? Is it dangerous? Can I keep it as a pet?

It's black and hairy with two soft red stripes on the abdomen .

KEEP IT AND FEED IT FLYS

Could I feed it ants? We've got ants. No flies, though. I'm not sure I could catch a fly.

Some variety of jumping spider. Completely harmless. It looks to be female. They don't live very long but if you put it in a small clean enclosure with some soil on the ground and something to climb about on you can feed it small insects and it will probably lay an eggcase.

Ants don't make good prey because of their high ratio of chitin to digestible content and their formic acid. You'll need to catch flies, crickets, moths, butterflies or something like that.

Thank you so much, kind Anon!

I have the perfect place for her. An old terrarium that was used for a praying mantis a couple years ago with all its mulch and twigs intact. I guess I can go hunt in my yard for suitable bugs. I live in a city, so we don't have any crickets but I might be able to scare something up.

But maybe I'll just let her go.
