Hello /an/. My rat (a mother) has a mammary tumor and it's getting rather large. I don't have the money for surgery, so I know it'll grow until she can't move or starts to suffer in some way.

Is there an easy, humane way to euthanize a rat at home? I'd rather not take it to a vet and pay for them to kill my rat, when I can handle the process myself.

not a humane way no

painless, then.

Is wrong.

If you do it right, rats and other small animals can be euthanized safely and humanely. You can even cuddle them right up until their death.

http://www.alysion.org/euthanasia/ Read it and re-read it and practice without any animals involved until you are absolutely sure you can do it right.

or op could do the right thing and save up the money to get their rat fixed.

Dr. .22 could help. Just stop being a pussy. It is painless for the rat as long as you are a good shot, you just have to have the stomach enough to do it. Seriously, why mix chemicals?
1: point
2: shot
3: bury
P.S. there is usually lots of spasms going on after a good head shot. Had to shoot a kitten last summer and it flailed to no end.

is a cloth sack in water considered humane anymore? :D

Whoops, used my /s name. Anyway before you all call me a troll or heartless prick, you should know the little bugger had a tumor in his brain. It was a bit sad it happened to him, as he was the only male out of a litter of 8 others.

Uh... It was an intentional mother. She is from a very healthy line and all of the children are doing very well. Not all of them can escape the most common tumor for female rats :/

First of all, my condolences to OP; I'm so sorry to hear about your situation. I lost my ex-lab albino buddy of 3 1/2 years to a couple of tumors, one of which was mammary, and I still miss him terribly. I hope her last days are peaceful and she goes painlessly.

It sounded to me like that this poster meant by 'fixed' was the surgery to remove the tumor, not spaying. While it's easy to be derisive of someone who won't or can't save up for the necessary surgery, which can run up to or over $1000, the reality is that it isn't usually the right solution. Unless the tumor is a.) completely operable and b.) localized, surgery won't do a lot of good, because the cancer will likely just recur. I was considering saving for an operation for my rat, but decided against it after a checkup revealed that the cancer was in his spine (had probably originated there, in fact) and the tumors there couldn't be removed. Add to this that rats, like any other small animals, are pretty delicate and can often die anyway of infections or shock incurred by the surgery, and it's sad to say that the surgery has too little a chance of complete success to be worth it for a person with an average income.

Another option is to contact the psychology department of a local college or university that has a rat lab, and after politely explaining your situation ask if they would accept your bringing in your rat to be euthanized with their subjects (sad as it is, US law now requires lab animals used in college courses to be put to sleep after their lab terms are over, and with the end of most college semesters drawing near it's about the right time). Not guaranteed, but worth a try.

I have used the method detailed in http://www.alysion.org/euthanasia/ twice, one for pituitary tumors, and the other for mammary. In my case i gave my rats a dose of Vicodin divided by 25 ( Painkiller, you probably won't have this, I happened to take my father's from his last surgery) and when they started to calm down and look a bit sleepy, I did the deed using an old tea kettle, and some tubing hooked up to a plastic bag. They both went quietly and without struggle.

Tumors are hard in that the rat will usually starve to death before anything else, You can prolong your rats life by a good bit if you feed it a supplement of Ensure or other high calorie drink. My rat lasted a good year after the appearence of her first tumor. Just make sure to keep their claws well trimmed as they can end up scratching their own tumor while trying to walk. Both my rats developed their tumors in old age, 3 and 4 respectively. The important thing is to keep them comfortable, and when they go downhill, don't keep them alive for selfish reasons, you'll know when it's their time.

In my opinion it's better to do things like this at home, it's more soothing to the rat than a long car ride to the vet, with weird people and noises. Also the fact that some vets euthanize with a needle to the heart just doesn't sit right with me.

Put it in a paper bag and then tape the paper bag to the exhaust pipe of a car.

Can't you just feed her to snake? Don't they sell rats and mice for that purpose anyways? Save some healthy rat's life OP. I'm sure if your pet rat was capable of altruism she would have wanted it that way.

Duct tape a grenade to it. Pull the pin. Throw the other part. Quick and easy. Best done outside.

Wouldn't a tumor hurt the snake, though?

No... There's nothing communicable in even a malignant tumor.

Anyway, this happened to one my rats, once. Does anyone know why they're so prone to tumors? One of parents worked at a hospital and brought home a syringe of what I assume was something like Vicodin. The rat became tired, slept, and died.

>>Does anyone know why they're so prone to tumors?

I think it's got something to do with the fact that the grand majority of rat breeding isn't regulated at all. Tons of health problems running in the family and no one to put an end to it.
>> BitterAnon !!WJLRQ1cwCyZ

Most domestic rats come from lab strains, which were bred to get cancer easy.

Retards.

Rats get cancer because they're only really "programmed" to live so long. Their bodies are built to last a year or two of eating and breeding before they punch the clock, so as they reach the end of their natural lives, their health problems start rapidly accelerating, just like humans (though we get heart disease and dementia more often than cancer).

There is no humane way to kill it at home. Putting it in a bag is a terrifying experience, shooting it is a ridiculous act of violence, and hitting it with a blunt (or sharp) object is not a sure kill. Plus, your little buddy is going to wonder why you're violently killing her.

Vets don't charge a lot to put down small animals. Call the office and ask, it'll probably only be about 20 dollars. If you don't have 20 to spare, you probably shouldn't own a pet anyway.
>> Anonymous
:( so sad. you could give her a few sleeping pills. make it in her food or something, maybe. /shrug. that's so sad. some vets do charity work, ESP if it's for such a small pet.

And what is the vet planning to do? Give it the needle? The veins on a rat are to small so they have to inject it directly into the heart or belly. Its extremely painful and inhumane.

Shitty troll.

Cuddling with human then drifting off to sleep
vs
a bumpy car ride, sitting in a strange area with all sorts of scary sounds and smells, getting fondled by strangers, then either being stabbed in the chest repeatedly (most vets don't sedate rats before euthanasia and because of the size of their organs and the massive size of the needle, its hard for them to inject them in the right areas, and a lot of rats drown rather than "go to sleep).

My rats play in bags all the time. They aren't afraid of bags or Tupperware dishes or baskets. Most vets do NOT charge 20 dollars to put them to sleep. Its generally 50+ and 100+ for tumour removal. I've only met a handful of vets that will even treat rats, and I work in rescue and know hundreds of vets across the southern US. If you use the method here http://www.alysion.org/euthanasia/ properly, it is a very gentle death.

You haven't the faintest idea of what you are talking about.

Yeah because rats are capable of complex thoughts like that.

There is no completely "humane" way, the way you PETAfags talk, drugging someone is like just going to sleep. But think of getting stoned on your own accord vs. getting slipped a roofie - it's uncomfortable, what the fuck is this strange feeling? Drowning is full of fear.

The gun is bloody, but easiest and likely the least uncomfortable. I also had the most girliest of friends put a bag over her beloved rat's head and smash it with a hammer... horrible, but worked. The flailing is just reflex.

lmao, nice AOL website. Really makes a strong point.

Honestly, I don't know if euthanizing your own rat makes you feel cool or what, but chances are your home remedy isn't peaceful or painless.

Asphyxiating is a terrible way to die and I hope that anyone who enjoys cramming rodents in a plastic bag and choking them to death someday has the same experience.

Rats are about as smart as dogs, if not smarter. They don't live long enough to be as trainable, though, so it mostly goes unnoticed by humans.

Shooting it is instant and the rat won't feel anything as long as you shoot it in the head.

I had a pet rat with the same exact problem. She stopped pooping because the tumor was in the way... so before I had her put to sleep I gave her cheese cake and tuna fish. Then I took her to the vet. It's better she dies fast rather than suffer cuz I was a broke ass.

On the topic of rat death, i keep getting this crazy urge wile playing with my pet rat, to squeeze her wayy harder then she can handle, just cuz she is so soft and squishy and cute. and she squeeks and i think its adroable. So yeah just snap the little guys neck, you can get them the sleep by massaging behind there head and then just go harder on one push and dislocate the head.
