Hey there, /an/. I've got a beautiful, older cat ( around 10 years old ) named Sammi and just this week we decided to pick up a kitten.

I'm following all the advice given to us by our vet, friends, and websites and things are slowly working out. What confuses me is that she's been moving her entire life and has lived with multiple cats during that time and has gotten along with them all but she won't even stand the kitten getting anywhere near her.

Is the fact that Rin ( the new, fluffy addition ) is a kitten having this sort of negative effect on her since she never had kitten herself?

Also, any additional advice or personal experiences shared on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

smear the kitten with tuna, I guarantee you the older one will learn to love her

I think that sammi views the kitten as intrusion on her space within the familly.
Perhaps if you kept them seperated for a while ( the kitten in only a couple rooms). And slowly introduce them to each other. I say this out of logic, but wor th a shot.

Yeah, the kitten has the bedroom to herself and I keep the door closed during the day and there's a big enough gap between the floor and the bottom of the door where they can see each other and smell each other without having contact.

I put each other's scents on a towel and put it under the other's food dishes too.

that might be causing some friction, I know if I was trying to enjoy a meal I wouldn't want a napkin that smelled like a new roommate I didn't want to be around

Or hit it with a hammer

Don't force interaction. And don't do the towel under the dish thing either....that'll just make the Sammi think that the little cat is eating her food!!! I'm sure the kitten wouldn't be so stupid as to go after Sammi's food again after Sammi got mad at her the first time.....but you have to let there be a first time, too.

Supervised interaction is fine, and there's gonna be a warming up period. Is she just kissing at the kitten? Or is it something more violent? As long as she's just hissing and batting gently at the kitten, then it's fine. Sammi is just telling the kitten that she's the boss. =) Again, I have to stress that supervised interaction is needed....don't hover, or else Sammi will think that there's something wrong and will react accordingly, but also don't leave the room and let Sammi do whatever she wants to the baby.

I introduced a kitten to my cat with no problems, but of course the older cat *is* retarded and wouldn't know an intruder if it bit her on the ass, which he frequently did.

One thing is to not make your cat anxious when the kitten is around. Don't hover over her - stay close in case she really goes for it, but don't leap on her if she does something wrong. You'll just be transferring your own negative influences onto her feelings around the kitten.

And very importantly, feed your older cat first and give her cuddles first. She's used to being top dog (lol) so there's no point in being "fair" about it when she won't understand fairness. Also, don't make them use the same litter box or food dish. Remove the food dish to around a corner or the other side of the house for both their comforts, and they'll work it out themselves eventually. Once the kitten's of a decent age and able to defend itself, if they're not friends by then they could at least mutually ignore each other then. ;)

^ But then you could have the dream scenario I've got where my two cats groom each other and wrestle 8D

Wow. What a gorgeous cat you've got there! You're lucky. Ah, yeah, it'd be a dream if Rin and Sammi got along but perhaps someday.

Yeah, Rin's food, water, and cat box are all in the master bathroom and she kinda chills in the bedroom most of the day. Sammi, on the other hand, took over the computer room on the other side of the house and occupies that most the time. They sometimes meet in the living room / kitchen and while Sammi doesn't hiss often anymore she still doesn't want to get close to the thing. She will watch her play though and she seems more intrigued then she does hostile now.

Thanks for the replies. Its helpful to read the situations of others.
