FERRETS. Lyke. Do they need any particular diet? Right now I'm feeding mine Eukanuba Lamb and Rice cat food, which I read was good for them.

Also...is it safe to feet rats mealworms? I read that it adds extra protein to their diet.

I believe it's very healthy to feed rats mealworms. They might not like them though.

Oh they'll like them... if it's the last thing they do

Personally I like feeding my mealworms; rats. Granted they've never successfully done it, but it makes for quite a show. That rat is getting bigger though -_-

Random question in a ferret thread. Can they be house trained in any sort of way?

My ferret uses the litterbox, if you're wondering that.

If the only thing you have available to feed your ferret is cat food, then feeding a high quality diet such as Eukanuba is better than the cheap stuff. However, it is still preferable to feed your ferret a decent ferret food. After all, it is a FERRET. Often, cat food has a lot of protein in it that is derived from plant sources. Food passes through a ferret's system much faster than a cat's, so a ferret should have a quality food that is mostly made up of meat proteins in order to get the full nutritional benefit. Cat foods and even some of the cheap ferret foods do not meet this criteria, so please read the packaging carefully. Also, if you need help in choosing a brand sold locally, talk to your exotics vet or a knowledgeable pet store owner... if the pet store is small. Don't trust anyone at one of the major retailers like PetSmart, as they are the Wal-Marts of the pet trade.

This is a brand of food I feed my cats, it is very much meat based and doesn't have those wonderful grain fillers. They have a ferret specific food too, just thought I'd pass along the link.

Cat food is bad for ferrets, to much fiber, they need ferret food or food with less than 3% fiber in their diet

well that link in the post above your has the fiber at 0.81% perhaps it'll make some happy ferrets after all

Um, I think if everything smelled like urine and feces, it means you're not cleaning their cages as often as you should, and not cleaning up after them if they go somewhere in the house while they're frolicking about.
