What does /an/ think about Cesar Millan, AKA The Dog Whisperer? I really enjoy his show and learn something new about dogs every time. So, is this guy the real deal or what? Does anyone know someone who's had Millan "fix" their dog's behavior?

The only thing is I wish he'd go beyond the west coast and travel all around the United States to help people with their dogs.

Godfuckingdamnit, in before massive shitstorm.

I don't like him. He sets dog training way back by intimidating dogs in to obedience. Sure, that's better than putting dogs down for bad behavior, but I'd rather a dog listened to me because they loved me, not because they were afraid I'd "alpha roll" them (canine death threat) if they didn't. A lot of his techniques are based on misunderstanding wolf behavior.

I agree.

I can do what he does without his stupid scare tactics just fine. You just have to understand and have a bit of patience, it's not that difficult. Give ME a show!

To add, since personal experiences were asked about, my sister had a dog with severe anxiety problems. This anxiety caused him to be aggressive. They took him to a professional trainer which used Cesar Milan-like techniques and, like Cesar, was obsessed with "being the alpha" (is anyone else creeped out by the constant dominance obsession? Jesus). Needless to say, a dog which was nervous and who sought control only got worse when some guy was trying to take control away from him and intimidate him. His aggression got so bad they had to surrender him to a shelter, which probably put him down.

Since you all know so much more about canine behavior, you should really start your own dog training businesses! It would be a smart move!

Yay, the inevitable Cesar supporters saying things like "I bet you're jealous because you don't have your own show" and "because you know so much more than a professional..." etc are starting. I was worrying that /an/ was losing its wit.

Yeah, as shown quite clearly on the show, he fixes dogs a lot of the time in almost no time at all. He comes in, scares them to death, and produces a nicely tempered finished product for about 24 hours. After that, the dog gets more aggressive or fearful etc...

He sets dog training back 40 years. All you need is time and patience and you can work out whatever kinks you and your dog have. But if you want a Neanderthal-like, quick-fix to your dog's behaviour, consult Cesar Millan. >.>

I've never understood why people have been so obessed with being in control of their dogs. I've always seen being an "alpha", whatever that is, to be something more of a guiding leader.

You work with your dogs, not they work for you. You don't need absolute obedience or a perfect dog, they just need to look to you for guidance, not look in fear of you.

You can easily make a dog in complete obedience to you through physically hitting or intimidation, but then what's the point? Why??? Because you're a control freak? Because you want the ground you walk on worshipped?

Fuck that. When I take my Huskies carting, scootering, sledding.. I work with them. Not they work for me. I guide them down the road, and I place faith in them to avoid obstacles that I would not see.

I don't hate the guy or anything, and his methods may be better than putting the dog down assuming the owners can maintain what he did (99% wont) but I would rather have someone show how to fix a troubled dog, by means of guiding it to the right path.

Baww. Have fun trying to make a really aggresive problem dog 'love' you faggots. He's not training the average willful puppy, he's training dogs with serious problems. Being loving towards dogs with serious behavior problems will just result in them taking advantage of you, it's like trying to treat serial killers with group therapy sessions.

The problem is not that he's doing it to these dogs.

The problem IS that people watching it are doing it to their perfectly normal dogs.

Yes it is. He is creating an era of retarded dog owners. That is his fault. If he cared about dogs he would understand that. He obviously doesn't and just wants to make money.

Also, people are retarded for following his advice.

>>165078
Seriously. I think these people get off on being all "manly" and getting their dogs to accept their "dominance" through intimidation and the like.
>> Anonymous
People that think his techniques are good for aggressive dogs have only watched his show or otherwise only heard about Cesar's techniques through is own perspective and not done anymore research. I work at a shelter as a socializer. I have worked with aggressive dogs. They need to know they can't push you around, but that DOES NOT mean that YOU push them around. Cesar is a bully, plain and simple.

one day his little pack will decide they're done having him as the leader and maul him to death, then eat him.

Cesar Millan is my hero.

Well, I believe a lot of what he says as far as projecting the right energy when working with dogs. For example, I'm a dog groomer, and as soon as I begin to get frustrated or angry with a dog, they almost immediately begin turning nasty. As for the pushing, making the dogs "surrender", and whatnot, I do think he takes it to extremes there. But he is spot-on with projecting energy.

>>165161
That much is true, but Cesar wasn't the first and certainly not the only trainer who advocates that.

i think some of the things he does are spot on, but a lot of should really only be used on much more aggressive dogs

lots of you like to give your dog the emotions and intelligence of a human. dogs are pack animals, cesar takes advantage of this ingrained pack mentality

ITT, people think everything is abusive to pets when it's actually not, so they enjoy having their pets walk all over them and mistake it for love.

ITT a person who thinks spoiling your dogs is the same as working with your dog.

Listen, you can do three things.

First, you can do what Cesar does, and demostrate your manliness to a dog, get a boner, jerk off like you're the shit. That's not to say that's what Cesar does, that's what people using his tatics does.

Second, you can be a person that lets their dogs walk all over them. Like those fags with toy dogs that think little dogs biting is cute and when they cutsey wutsey piddlesey in the house its a oopsie! And carry them around everywhere because the ground's too dirty for their divine paws. Then you're a retard, on the other end of the scale of Cesarfags.

Third, you can work WITH them. Your dogs will respect you because you have been a benevolent leader. You've provided for them, you've protected them, you've guided them in the ways of living with humans. They don't instinctively know how to live with humans, they have to be taught it. That is your job. They will work for you in return. My dogs work their asses off for me, and I work my ass off for them. That's because I have a working dog. If you have a companion dog, you train them, and you receive their love in return.

See? Not rocket science.

I've owned chickens "smarter" than most dogs, and considering chickens don't even know how to count or know then they ought to be full, I'd say ... no.

Humans like to place human attributes to objects they are attached to, and that's mainly to justify the attachment. That's perfectly fine. Doesn't mean you have to go on and pretend it's any more than a result of your attachment. In the end, your dog won't know whether you "respect" it or consider it "noble", so long as the food and belly-scratching continues.
>> Anonymous
>>165461
Actually, research shows chickens ARE pretty damn smart, so it's no remarkable accomplishment for them to be smarter than a dog.
>> Anonymous
I don't believe in his methodology 100%, but I'm not a hater like most of the people here.

With a dog, I believe in being friends with him/her, but the dog must understand that I am in charge. I consider it like being friends with someone who works under you, in a way, in a casual business setting.

If the dog wants to go for a walk, I'll take him. If the dog wants to play, we play. We can play tug of war and do whatever. But when I say stop, we stop. You do have to be able to control your dog.

Well said!

Dogs are not people, and can't be treated as such. At the same time, they also aren't wolves, which creates problems in Millan's theories.
>> Anonymous
You people seem to exaggerate what he does, the rolling over technique is only used with already dangerous aggressive dogs when they have done something that crosses the line like attacking a person or other dogs and tries to make it calm and understand there is no threat to its safety. Also dogs were breed for the purpose of doing what people want, so a dog that does not do what its owner wants is a badly trained dog. Dogs are not people they are smart but don't think things trough like us so don't see something happening to a dog and impose what you would feel in a situation as what the dog is feeling. Ceaser corrects bad behavior, he is not a dog trainer and if the dogs he worked with became violent shortly after the show the guy wouldn't be doing what he's doing for all those years.
>> Anonymous
>>166738

But the problem that's been stated in this thread is that while it might be okay for the dogs this guy works with, who do have the aggression problems, Average Joe who tunes in to watch sees that and thinks, "I'll do this to my dog!" But Average Joe, more likely than not, has a dog who does not need the kind of training Millan advocates.
