My friend has two ferrets (male and female, 2yo, neutered) that he needs to get rid of his due to allergies. I played with them today for a while to see how I felt about them and gosh darn it, they're just so cute and playful. But boy do they leave a stink...

What are some of the basics I need to know before becoming a full time parent of two lovable ferrets? Pros and cons? Will I smell like this forever?

FERRET PROOF EVERYTHING. Hide candy, hide fruit, get some stuff called time out and spray them on your computer wires cause some ferrets will chew on them.

They are a bag full of adorable crazy! Very loving pets and they always want to play. If they eat Marshalls food them give them bi-oder to cut down the smell. Also Yesterdays new littler is a really good litter.

Ferrets shouldnt 'stink'. IF you take care of them properly and house them properly they shouldnt atleast. Keep them in a big cage with lots of ventilation. For bedding use all tshirts blankets...baby blankets. Wash the bedding weekly. For litter don't use clay or clumping cat litter, I use yesturdays news (its recycled newspaper pellets). Don't feed them marshalls crap or stuff with fish in it, it'll make them stinkeh. Try Zupreem, Totally Ferret, Innova EVO (Cat or ferret). And most of all bathe them only once every few months, any more will make their coat go into over production and stink.

Pros are they are AWESOME PETS, they all really have their own personality. Cons are they are very vunerable to illiness so you will have to take them to the vet for something eventually (ferret savings fund time). IF you really want to learn more your best is to join a ferret forum and talk to old ferret people

What this anon said.

I made the mistake of washing my first ferret too much. Big mistake. Keep the cage clean, don't wash them very often. They actually can smell kind of nice in a musky way.

yay. Yeah ferret proof everything, play with them alot, I let mine sleep with me in bed. They are rarely ever in their cage. I get them BioOder and it works well to help with the smell you just put it in their water and it helps. Wash their bedding and anything they sleep on on a regular basis ( bout every other week) that will help a bunch too. Clean their litter or whatever they poop on about twice a day since you have two.

what this anon said. I personally don't wash their bedding all that often and only bathe them once or twice a year because I love their smell.

Also, make sure nothing leather or rubber is in their reach; they will chew, eat and not be able to digest which will make them sick.
