If you are keeping a single rat, you should get him a companion. Rats do best when they have other rat companions to interact with.

If he has babies with a girl rat, could you send one to my friend? She desperately wants a rat as a pet.

If you're home frequently, singles do just fine. The best rats I ever had were solos. In my case someone is always home to play with them, so it works out.
BUT, if you are not home frequently, yes, do get a friend. Introduce on neutral territory though. You can't just fling a new rat in an established cage.
