How does /au/ treat fleas? Specifically for cats if you can.

Get flea medication, then clean the fuck out of your house and everything in it.

A more popular cheap substitute would be nice.

It would be nice, but that's the only way to get rid of them.

A good bath with hot, soapy water will kill adult fleas on your pet. However that doesn't do you much good. You have to get rid of the eggs as well as fleas elsewhere in the house (and yard if you hve an outdoor kitty).

Cleanliness in general is the #1 thing that you need to take care of. Don't worry about buying special flea treatments (yet). First things first, you need to clean up clutter, vacuum like crazy (and frequently), etc. Focus espeically on areas where your cat spends a lot of time. Treating your house with a simple insecticide is another good first step, and it's not expensive. Just get some permethrin-based home insecticide from the hardware store. It's cheap and it is also human and pet-friendly. Spray along baseboards, in corners, behind furniture, etc.

Also don't forget to wash your kitty's bed, soft toys, and any other items that your cat comes in contact with regularly.

Just use the flea medication by itself for a month then. Cat fleas can't survive on human blood, but they'll still bite you for the month.

Use a bug bomb if you want to get em all from your house, make that a few bug bombs actually.

For the cat itself, Frontline or Advantage is best. But if you can't afford medicine or flea shampoo, bathe your cat with Dawn dish liquid. It kills fleas just as good as flea shampoo just make sure you wash it all out.

To kill the fleas in the house sprinkle some boric acid powder on your carpet. Make sure you get underneath the furniture too. It will kill the fleas and dry up their eggs. You leave that on your carpet for a few days then vacuum it up. You can also sprinkle it around the outside of your house too for good measure. Boric acid powder can be bought under the brand name Borax at most dollar stores.

Another remedy is to put a pan in the middle of a room, fill it with water and a few drops of Dawn dish liquid, place a lit candle in the center of the pan , and turn out the lights. The fleas are attracted to the light and the heat from the candle flame and the little fuckers drown themselves. It works but not nearly as well as the boric acid treatment. One reason is the candle treatment doesn't deal with the eggs.

We've had flea infestations in renters' houses (damn white trash). The exterminator stirred up the dirt under the house to get the eggs to hatch, then sprayed. Had to do this repeatedly over a month because the eggs don't all hatch at once. The eggs are tough.
