dear /an/

I'm considering adding an aquarium and some nice fish to my pet collection.

how hard is it to maintain a tank? I was thinking just some pretty fish, or even pirahnas if they're not too hard to keep.

ALSO, I remember when I was young I saw a baby shark or something in an aquarium. Now I'm sure it wasn't a baby shark as it was kept in a small enclosure, but some other sexy type of fish.

It looks like a shark (sorta like a great white) but obviously a lot smaller. Maybe the size of a big foot.

also, are there any sort of rays that are small and keepable (i love the look of them)

kthx

Its not hard to maintain the tank, if you know what are you doing, than it would take about 10-20 min every day, and an extra hour at the end of each week. Saltwater tanks (like the one on your pic), though, are more complicated, more expensive and would require more maintainance.

Piranhas, or a shark is a very bad firt fish for a novice. First, they require very big tanks, and I am talking 500+ gallon big. For shark you have to spend thousands (if not tens of thousands) dollars for setting up the tank, and most likely you will have to create a permanent change in your house (reinforcing floors, waterproofing the room), and after that hundreds of dollars every week for maintanence.
Piranhas are a little better - they only require a modest 100-200 gallon tank for a scool. And yes, they are schooling fish and need to be kept in groups, and they grow up fast and tend to shit a lot. If kept in small groups in cramped spaces, piranhas would be depressed and very violent to each other.

To me it sounds like you want fish not because you like them, or because you are interested in them, but for a "cool" factor. Unfortunately, I have seen too many fish geting dumped and equipment thrown away as the cool factor evaporates. I beg you to reconsider either your wish to aquire an aquarium, or your approach to fish.
