I just bought a fish a couple hours ago, it seemed to be acclimating to its new home nicely when we left but when we came home a few hours later it was sitting at the bottom of our makeshift tank breathing heavily and looking very bad.

The tank was a plastic container that held pretzels for the majority of it's existance. The lid was on so there was no airflow, my mom seems to think this is the cause of the fish's illness.

We also used tap water to fill the container, could this be a problem?

Any halp would be appreciated, I really don't want to have to buy a new fish.

Oh, and it was just a feeder fish, I wanted to save it from imminent death by feeding but I guess I didn't halp much.

It was a strange feeder fish though, it was all orange but with black spots, beautiful for a feeder fish.

Tomorrow when I get my new fish can I use bottled water to fill the tank? And was using the pretzel container a big problem?

...a feeder fish? Did you just get a goldfish and put it in a pretzel container? because goldfish feeders are usually comets or comet-shubunkin mixes (as it sounds like you had,) which should be kept in a pond or a huge aquarium as if they're healthy they get to be almost a foot in length.

Don't get another feeder fish. They require a much larger tank with a filter in order to survive. If you want to actually keep a feeder alive (which is either a red rosy or a comet goldfish, most likely), it takes much more advanced fishkeeping knowledge than you seem to have. Get a betta if you insist on keeping it in a container/jar. Nothing else will live through it long.
The container is only an issue if you cleaned it with soap (which you probably should have) and then didn't rinse it thoroughly. UNLESS it's very small. Then that's another part of the issue.
Yes, you can use bottled water.

Please notify the pet store you got the fish at and give them your picture so they don't accidently ever sell you another fish

Well, at least you asked what exactly went wrong, I give you that. But still, the ammount of fail in op post makes me shudder.

Is this real? Is this a troll? It is a mystery.

Why.. why would you buy a living thing you weren't prepared to take care of? "Makeshift tank?" I don't want to call age or maturity into question but please grow out of the "I want to save the little animals" mindset. Comet goldfish and rosy reds labeled as feeders are there for precisely that. Do not buy another fish until you're prepared to dump at least $20 into fish supplies for a betta, or $100 for anything else.
