How many averagely powered bloodlusted stray dogs can one average healthy 18 year old male human win against (that is to say, incapacitate every dog) using a short hard unbreakable stick?

I think what this guy means is, if you were attacked by a group of stray, aggressive dogs (most likely pit bulls) and you grabbed the nearest hard object to protect yourself, how much of a chance would you stand against x dogs?

I'd say about three. It's not so much about strength as that any more and you'd lose track of one, it'd slip behind you, injure your leg, and that'd be the end. Realistically though, if you defend yourself well from the first few they will usually just turn and run. Predators don't like prey that fights back.

There's also the breed to take into account. A scrawny mutt like the OP's pic would probably go down in one hit. A wolfhound/mastiff/st. bernard would take the hit and keep coming. A pit bull would bite the stick in half and spit the splinters into your heart.

On a safety/ethical note, don't pick fights with stray dogs. It's not nice or wise.

more than 2 and you can't win. They'd go for your neck.

Pit bulls are rarely aggressive toward humans unless they've been abused. They are highly aggressive toward other dogs, but that's a separate genetic trait.

This is significant, since realistically very few stray dogs have any interest in attacking someone who's putting up a decent fight, unless you're attacking their puppies or something. No common American breed is bred for aggression toward humans, although there are some breeds in other countries (Tibetan mastiffs, I've heard).

But if the dogs were unnaturally aggressive for some reason and didn't just panic and run the first time you waved the stick, I'd be very impressed if you could handle even two.

It also depends on how they manage group tactics. If they come at you one at a time single file, you can probably pwn quite a few. If they come at you simultaneously, you'll get your ass handed to you.

Humans are pretty much the only animal dumb enough to come at you one at a time single file. "Let's all charge him at once" is not really sophisticated group tactics, although you'd think so from movies.

I'd say this depends on the dog more than the human. An average dog is a hard thing to put your finger on, especially since dogs vary so much from one breed to another in mental traits.

Assuming aggressive breeds like pitbulls, german shepherds, doberman's etc. I'd say 3 would be enough to ensure you're fucked, and you'd have a very low chance against two. They would come at the same time and likely circle to different sides like wolves. You could probably get a good smack on one of em on the nose or under the jaw with the stick and send it running at least until the others gain a foothold on you.

If there were two others they would circle to different sides and latch onto your arms and legs, unbalance you easily and go for the throat.

If only one was left, you'd probably reflexively throw up your arm to defend while you hit the first dog and get bit on the arm.
If you were quick enough before the first dog got its courage up or you get pulled down by the second dog you could gouge eyes or crack it in the head with the stick depending on which arm it got you on and come away with severly mangled arm.

Be sure to get a rabies shot.

Is the human in question athletic? Large? Any sort of physical, military or martial art training? How intelligent and cool headed or panicked?

Face it, humans can vary even more than dogs.

Sure, but the op limited criteria for the human pretty well, for an 18 year old US male it would look something like this:

Avg height - 5'10"
Avg weight - 185 lbs
Avg benchpress - 175-200 lbs
Avg squat - 225-275 lbs
Avg speed - ~25 feet/second
Avg reach - ~3 feet
Stick length - ~2 feet
Total Reach - ~4.5 feet

For the three breeds I mentioned the dogs would be something like this on average:

Avg height - 2 feet at the shoulders
Avg length - 4.5 feet
Avg weight - 75 lbs
Avg speed - ~45 feet/second
Jump height - ~3 feet

Your advantages are reach and size, so take a stable stance with your primary foot back and ready to shoot out for a kick under the jaw, if you do this make sure you snap it back quickly, don't leave it dangling out there to get bitten and locked onto. Be aware of your surroundings, especially anything behind you so that you can backpedal to help negate the dogs' speed advantage and tendency to circle you. If you can find any golfball to softball sized rocks or other good objects to throw in your immediate vicinity, do so before they get too close (do not bend down to pick them up if the dogs are already within ~20 feet or so).

Hold the stick at the ready out to the side of you at about head level but with your elbow mostly tucked in. If you have a jacket or any other pieces of loose clothing take it off quickly and wrap it around your non-primary arm, you can use this to guard your throat and other arm, most dogs have a tendency to bite on arms anyway so you may be best off just offering it to one of the dogs when they decide to attack. If it's fairly thick it should keep the dog busy almost indefinitely without causing much damage to your arm. Strike to the eyes, nose, and throat, not the top of the head. It's very unlikely you're going to knock the dog out due to concussion.
