Sup /an/.
How would you go about persuading your cat to scratch its claws on one of the many scratching posts scattered throughout the flat instead of on random pieces of furniture?

Spray it with water when it scratches furniture.

Pet it when it uses the post.

Should work.

A lot of commercial scratching posts aren't actually rough enough for cats to sharpen their claws like they need to, so make sure of that first. If it's covered in something like carpet, that won't work. If you can't find a good scratching post you can make one - cover it in the bottom side of the carpet, the rough side.

Other than that, yeah, catnip and water pistols.

We made a scratching post with carpet right side up, and our cats love it. The carpet is different, though. It's hard to explain.
