Me and my friend are planning to start an ant farm and have been trying to find a queen ant for about three days now with no luck at all, does /an/ have any tips for us? (We live around central cali and it's been pretty hot and dry)

We could also use some info on making our own setup, any links to information would be appreciated. I checked on google but all I came up with was a bunch of useless info.

Thanks /an/!

just put some kool aid around the perimeter of your home, you will have a queen in no time

Bump for interest

I haven't read it over, but you may also find something of interest in Argentine Ant Thread #3, as it's 1 1/2 months old now.

The problem with America is that they don't allow ants sent through mail, I have tons of queens available of various species.

You can do nothing but wait until there's a nuptial flight.

Op here, still no luck. I guess I just need to try keeping trying new places until I get it. : \

I just also wondering what people make nests out of (that stucco looking stuff). Any links to websites or stuff like that would be very much appreciated, thanks. :]

jezus, are people actually interested in ants?

yeah, but most often they do it out of interest, not bragging potential.

ant vs. Gnats

heres somthing strange , thier was a toy suck up in a tree, i thought it was wierd , so I threw stuff at it until I knocked it out , then i noticed ants had made it into a home, then I felt bad for knocking thier home down, they immidiatly started evaquating the Pupa (babies), has anyone ever heard of ant doing this.???

yes, very common behaviour.
If their nest is destroyed, flooded, etc. they evacuate the breed and queen.

That part made sense , but I didnt know they used plastic toys, as homes, and I cant figure out how it got up in the tree to begin with it was wedged in thier pretty good...I was like hmmm, these ants are smarter than our other ants, which is why i was kinda upset when I knocked it down but it was way too high for me to get it back up.

Try finding it a nest during flight seasons if not then look under rocks.

Ants are not "smart", everything they do is genetic, they don't have the ability to learn.
They'll take pretty much everything they can carry and use it for their nest.
