Hi /an/ :3 I've been really interested in getting a bearded dragon for the past few months and have been doing a lot of reading up and talking to people about them. When I was younger, we had a chinese water dragon, so I kind of know what I'm doing, but I haven't bought one yet. The pet place down the street (it's the only petstore in 60 miles) is selling 3 or 4 beardies 60 dollars each. They're really tiny and oh god so cute. What do you recommend for a tank size, for sand, food (crickets, mealworms, veggies?), heat, etc? My neighbors are giving me their old aquarium, I think it's 20 gallons, but I forget. Is this okay to start? Thanks for any and all help :3

There's a website for every animal, most just a google search away.

I have a uromastyx myself, but I had looked into beardies. One thing you should know is that they grow up fast, and a 20 gallon tank is soon going to make a good bathtub for it...
60 bucks is pretty cheap, go for it.

I've never owned one, but I went through a short phase where I wanted a beardie really badly. Their grin is so charismatic.

How fast do they grow? The ones n the shop are pretty small, maybe 7 inches head to tail.

OP here, I also have a curious cat. I'm wondering if she'll bother the bearded dragon too much? I don't want to have to separate them, she never bothered my fish, but I don't want him to get a heart attack or anything if she scares him

bearded dragons can and most likely will get expensive provided they have the proper care i.e. lighting, tank size, supplements, ext. they'll grow somewhat fast, a 20 long should last a baby a few months. and sixty is a bit expensive lol

check out beardeddragon.org and look at their caresheets.

a 20 gallon will last u a couple months, but if they're already 7 inches they should be up to 15-16" within I'm guessing 8 months.

you'll need a lot of expensive things. the SMALLER they are, the MORE live food they eat. expect to buy crickets in BULK, 1000 or more at a time. the 7" baby beardie will eat up to 100 crickets a day. fresh veggies should be given every day too. NO MEALWORMS. NO SAND OF ANY KIND!! use paper towels or reptile carpet as your substrate. get a REPTISUN 10.0 UVB bulb and let it get within 5 inches of the beardie. do not get a reptiglo 8.0. also get a clamp lamp to put a regular household bulb in (not a red one) and a DIGITAL PROBE THERMOMETER (not the cheap dial ones) to read correct temps. basking spot should be 100-105 and rest of the tank in the 80s. water dish is not needed. bathe it in the sink/tub a couple times a week. enjoy!

and do check out that site ^^

He's adorable. :3 I know that they get pretty costly, but money isn't really an issue. I need to improve on my responsible-ness a bit before I actually go pick one up. Thanks a lot guys :3

A friend of mine has one that I've taken care of a number of times while she was away. Holy shit are they finicky about heating. Unless you can keep the tank 90F at all times, expect the damn thing to be sluggish and not do a damn thing.

It was near impossible to keep the lamp she had on without roasting my ass. D: I'm glad I just have a corn snake.
