My mom adopted some dogs. One of them is a lhasa apso mix, probably about 7 years old, and he has some strange habits. 23 hours a day, he paces around the house or yard in circles like he is chasing something. When he does this, it is pretty much impossible to get his attention in any way. I took this video at my mom's house to show to my vet friend. He was no help. Can you explain wtf this dog is up to?

There is a type of dog OCD. Perhaps he has that.

Ask your vet friend about dog psychiatric medications, and see if you can get a second opinion on it as well.

Today I went over to feed them around 1:00. I tried tying a chew toy to a string to see if he'd like to chase it around the way cats do. As I swung it, the dog went nuts, but not to chase the chew toy, he kept attacking my shadow.

Does he also get obsessive over mirrors too? Or just shadows and circles?

Heh, I tried showing him his reflection in a small mirror, but he just ignored it.

(The other dog, a 1-2 yo cockapoo was terrified of the mirror. I wasn't sure why until I realized I was holding the magnified side up to him, showing him a giant, dog face. He's still pretty scared of the normal side too. Other things he's afraid of include brooms and bbq tongs.)
