Cagefag here from the earlier thread. I never really got a straight answer, so here I go again...

Do I NEED to actually get rid of the boxes that I have in there, or can I just keep them in there until they are chewed up or I just can't use them anymore? Do they really get to be THAT dirty and unhealthy that it's necessary to take them out?

I shake them out to get any solid shit out.

They're gonna get soaked with pee way before the rats chew them up. Tissue boxes last in my cage 2-3 days before I throw them out. It's up to you I guess, but eventually ammonia is going to build up and then your rats will get sick.

It would have been very nice to know this before I spent all that time working on it.

Any idea or approximation on how long they'll last before i need to throw them out?

Depends. How long have they been there already? Male or female rats? I find my males pee everywhere even though they are litter trained. Do you have litter box in the cage?

Just go by smell. After 2 or 3 days of my two pretty much living in a box (they love them) it starts to smell so I throw it out. I'd say get some hammocks in there as well just for the hell of it, most ratties love them.

If it smells bad - throw it away. I prefer hammocks and other washable stuff.
