We had a dog and a cat. They were approximately the same age (cat one year older). When we brought the puppy home, my cat just sort of sat on the counter, looked down at him and went WHAT did you bring into MY house? But they became friends pretty soon and would always ALWAYS curl up to sleep together (really really cute, we have incriminating pictures from before the days of digital lol).
But then he began to grow u_u Mind he was a terrier XD But she was a small cat and he was the opposite of a runt and a fatty to boot so he swelled to twice her size and she decided she didn't want to play with him anymore. It was really sad because for his entire life (he's gone now but she's still living) he never understood that they weren't friends anymore. Every time he tried to play with her, she's swipe him with her claws or hiss and run (which only incited him to chase her lol, which made her even more angry at him).
She was more antagonistic in the beginning of this phase, but mellowed into just ignoring him as much as possible. Nobody was ever killed, seriously injured, or involved in a real fight, so I guess in the end they got on all right lol.
Our dog didn't have much of a problem with my sister's rabbit either but my cat is a hunter (farm cat gogogo) so we never let her get too close just in case haha.
