I agree-- go to your vet and get some diet recommendations for him. Ask for the specs of a good diet, don't just buy something from the vet, since some of the "vet only" diet foods are no better than the kind you can buy at a pet food store for less.
Otherwise you can switch to a reduced fat or low calorie (or senior, if your dog is aging) food on your own. As for motivating him to exercise, no need to worry about that-- just snap on his lead and take him for a walk!
Start slow and build up if he's out of shape- -short walks every other day, then short walks every day, than longer and longer ones.
It's simple to get a dog to lose weight, though not always easy.
