The directions are on the package--the stuff I got was once a month, but read your package (or call up your vet and ask) to make sure.
If your cat (and all other pets) is (are) indoors, and your home flea-free, all you need to do is get your cat (pets) flealess and then continue to keep the fleas out of the house. My cat (indoors) received flea treatment for four months a year ago, then I haven't needed anything else since.
If your cat is outdoors, I'm not entirely sure. Likely you'll keep up with flea treatment every month. Double check with your vet, or likely the receptionist at the vet's office can get you the answer.
