dear /an/

Im getting my sister a hamster for her birthday. She already knows about their care and whatnot, because there was a time my father was going to get her one so she read up on everything. My question is, how many hamsters do you need to have. Im getting her a panda bear hamster btw, and if its ok to have 1 hamster by itself, is this cage a good one?

Hamsters are assholes. Back in middle school my teacher had two. The female had babies and then promptly decided to eat them. Afterwards she went insane and attacked the male if they were ever in the same cage. Later she bit off part of his ear while a girl let them play in class.

Leave the hamster by itself.

i agree with the terrarium suggestion, they're much easier to clean. just dump the old bedding, wipe it down with that windex for pets stuff called Clean Cage, it should be at petsmart/petco and replace. taking apart the plastic cages with the tubes the adult hamsters cant even fit in is annoying and way too damn complicated. especially when the shit pieces snap off.

Ignore the people dissing hamsters. Although some hamsters are evil, gerbils are hyperactive fuckers that are more likely to bite.

If you're going to get one hamster, get a female. They're more than capable of being alone. That cage is much too small, though. Get a bigger cage with a solid-bottom wheel. Petco is a shitty place for cages, but if you really want to get it there, get this:

Oh yes! Also remember that it's not good for hamsters to get pine or cedar bedding, just thought I'd throw this in there. Carefresh is the best IMO.

I know, I know, I forgot something else. As a long-time hamster owner, believe me when I say DO NOT GET A TANK. It has very poor ventilation for the hamster, and thus makes them more likely to have resperitory problems. But I agree on one thing: If you get a cheap plastic cage, a hamster will find a way to chew through it and escape.

I've had a few teddy bear hamsters and the males were sweeter than the female I had. I've also had 2 russian dwarf hamsters that were EVIL. One of them we had to handle with gloves. After a while we stopped interacting with her except for feeding while she was asleep. We rejoiced when she died of old age.

If you have a well-ventilated house, this is usually not a problem. Keep the tank away from sunlight/drafts/fans and the hamster will be all right. It's one thing to warn of the possible risk for poor air supply in tanks, it's another to exaggerate it like that.

OP, maybe you can make a bin cage, they're absolutely cheap and easy to make with a few tools! Also very roomy compared to most shit cages on the market.
