Ignoring all the captionfaggotry, what is it with white cats with black tails and black markings on the head? Do cats have some kind of gene that controls tail and forehead colour or something? This has to be the third white cat with a black tail and asymmetric black marking on its head I've seen so far.

Sort of. There are various genes that cause piebald (b/w) colouration in cats, but some of the most common ones limit colour spotting to the head/posterior region, or limit white spots to the chest, head and paw areas. So you end up seeing a lot of cats with "tuxedos" or the "van" pattern, where the forehead and tail are coloured. The pic is a litter of Turkish van kittens. The "van" pattern is highly desirable in this breed, albeit in auburn instead of black.

So is my cat a van?

Not a Turkish van (which is a specific breed of cat), but he's got a van pattern.
