i used to have 3. don't get them unless you like cleaning up messes (they spit food everywhere and pee when and wherever they feel like it) and have a shit ton of time to devote to them. also their claws hurt like hell (claws are made for trees, not skin. see pic). they're sweet and cute, but definitely a lot of work and time required!!

here's another pic. previous was adolf, my sweetest and most outgoing of the 3. i'm sure most of the claw marks on my chest in that pic are from him. they love climbing and jumping between people and objects. i once had one land on my face and got a claw to the eyelid. that hurt like a bitch.

You know, animals didn't magically show up on this planet pre-domesticated. Every "domestic" animal started out somewhere as a "wild" animal. As the proud owner of many exotic pets over the years, I have found that pretty much any animal can make a great pet when given the proper amount of care and compassion. It's a few faggots who don't research their animals thoroughly or who are neglectful that make an animal unsafe or undesirable to keep as a pet.

ITT a douchebag who has never actually owned a sugar glider, but instead makes baseless arguments after reading a PETAfag pamphlet.

While sugar gliders are relatively new to the American and European pet scene, they have actually been kept as pets in their Australian/New Zealand homelands for at least 30 years now. Pretty much all pet trade animals are captive bred, not wild caught.

Also, you might be interested to know that the common golden hamster sold in pet stores has only been around in the pet trade since the 1930's, but I don't hear fags like you crying about that.

Any sugar glidars you purchase outside of Australia have probably been smuggled or kept illegally. It is ILLEGAL to take any Australian protected species from the wild. Do not purchase these animals, ever. Even captive populations are likely to be descended from smuggled individuals. Several Australian species are rare and endangered, do not keep these animals as pets, do not support the illegal pet trade, and do not support the keeping of non-domestic animals as pets.

Except sugar gliders aren't exclusive to Austraila.

Also, they're at LEAST CONCERN.

You can pull that shit with wombats and wallabies and platypi, but we keep our fucking sugar gliders.

It's pretty bullshit that Austraila keeps all their animals to themselves, anyways. Maybe if they let other countries have a shot at rehabilitating them, they wouldn't be so fucking endangered.
>> Anonymous
I talked to somebody who breeds them, and played with one before. I fed him a piece of chicken (no skin) and it was the coolest thing that happened that whole night.
They are pretty awesome and have varying personalities, but they do have a musk smell, and apparently you need a really big cage to keep them in. She said that you have to feed them all kinds of stuff, from mealworms to fresh fruit. So they do take a lot of work to keep.

Most (read: almost all) sugar gliders kept currently in the US are descended from populations legally imported from New Zealand. I worked in a pet store for five years, and all of our animals were certified as legally bred and raised in the USA by the USDA. The are completely legal to keep and breed in almost all US states except California, which is full of crybaby petafags like you. Lick my balls.

>Hamsters are peculiar little rodents with large cheek pouches and short stubby tails. They have gained popularity as pets and research animals since the 1930's. The Syrian hamster's (golden hamster) wild habitat extends through the Middle East and Southeastern Europe. In 1930, a litter of eight baby hamsters was taken to Palestine and raised as research animals. Virtually all domesticated hamsters sold in the pet trade and research are descendants of three of the survivors of this litter. Hamsters were introduced first into the United States in 1938.

Wow, good thing 1938 wasn't full of faggots like you guys. Otherwise, we wouldn't have so many of these cuddly little bastards.

So cry moar.

Stupid Austrailan bugger. You're like the deep south of England, you are. The only redemable quality you had going for you was killed by a sting-ray and now you can all shove your dicks up your arses.

Also, again, sugar gliders aren't exclusive to Austraila. They're native to New Guinea and the Bismarck Archipelago as well. Therefore they're fair game. Dumbass.

>>111726
Never said releasing them into other country wilderness, skipper. Good job at failing reading comprehension.

It would be the same idea as the god damned panda program, where we borrow them, breed them, and then China gets them back.

being native to New Guinea makes it justifiable amirite? even though they are also protected species there as well? pray tell, which species of glider are you referring to?

>>111744
then wtf does that have to do with keeping them as pets? what, do you just want recognition by keeping them in your country or something? Australia is doing a fine job by itself, there is no reason that any other country should need to set up captive breeding populations.

>>111730

First of all, I meant to type New Guinea, not New Zealand. That is completely my fault. And, yes, it was completely legal (at least it was ten years ago) to import the little shits.

Also, upon re-reading my post, nowhere in it did I claim to be an "expert". It was simply anecdotal evidence used to make a specific point. During the course of my career I was able to speak with, and often tour the facilities of, numerous distributors and breeders, both commercial and private. I also spoke with officials at the USDA and Fish and Game Services, as well as reviewed countless federal and state documents to ensure compliance with federal regulations. I can safely say that NO ONE in the US imports these little guys anymore, legally or illegally, for the following reasons:

1) It is ridiculously expensive to do, even illegally
2) It is comparably easy and inexpensive to breed the bastards
3) The exotics industry is very tightly regulated now since the monkeypox outbreak that initiated by the importation of Gambian giant rats

Also, I can safely say that at least my experience working in the industry makes me more of an "expert" than someone whose only credentials appear to be "hurr hurr i maek post."

Actually, California IQ levels rank 28 out of the 50 US states. Good try.

could you tell the difference between a sugar glider and a mahogany glider if you saw them in an illegal pet store in America?
>> Anonymous
the only way a sugar glider could be legally transported to america would be exporting them before they became a protected species, or if they were transported to a zoo, in which case it would be illegal to sell animals to the public.

I saw a show where this lady saved some sloths from the rain forest and they had some baby sloths, and holy crap was it awesome. All you need is some plants for them to eat, and you can pick them up and attach them to any support structure. She had beams running through the ceiling of her house that they would hang on. You can pick one up and it'll just grab on to you. When you get tired of holding it you jut put it next to something else that it can hang off of and it will grab on to that. Sloths are awesome.

It's not illegal for zoos (in the US) to sell animals to the public. Typically they will try to sell or trade to other zoos or wildlife "parks," but they have definitely been known to sell to the private industry.

DO NOT get a hamster! They are wild animals, and wild animals do not make good pets. Also, they are becoming increasingly rare in Syria (which they are ENDEMIC to), and that is being fueled by the illegal exotic pet industry. It's way cheaper, easier, and less risky to just breed hamsters in the states since there's already a shitload of them over here, but I'll bet there's LOTS of hamsters illegally imported into the US! And even if they were bred by a breeder, those hamsters' great-great-great-great-great-great-grandparents were probably illegally imported! Please stop supporting this horrible, horrible industry! I totally didn't do any research on this and I've never even talked to a hamster breeder before, but dammit I feel strongly about this, so I must be right.

Don't get a hamster!

Hamsters are horrible. I tried holding one like normal and the fucker bit my finger tip. I can still feel it and it's been months. The little bitch got out in the pet store. Haven't seen it since. I hope it died.

In all seriousness, a rat is a much better pet than a sugar glider.

>>112093
Not extinct every where else. Opposums for one are marsupials that can be found in North America. There are plenty on other continants, Australia just has the most.
