Sup /an/?
So, yesterday, I got raped by many viruses, and at this moment I still am. My free AVG is the only thing keeping them at bay, but it can't remove them. Anyway, after the attack, the day went pretty much downhill.
Couldn't do shit online, the scan was taking forever, so I decided to make a cake. Then, I forgot about said cake and burned the shit out of it.
Pissed off and with nothing to do, I started cleaning the kitchen - like one of those mad cleans where everything has to be fucking spotless. As I'm scrubbing the floors, I hear a kitten crying outside the door, so I go check it out.
I called it, and then saw the most sad and adorable furball come plowing into my feet, very wet, shivering, and generally not that great looking. Before I decided to claim it, I walked around to the other apartments to see if it belong to anyone. the people next to us said it was a stray they had just bathed and fed, but didn't want to keep it. (Why on earth you'd throw a wet kitten outside is beyond me.)
Being the bleeding heart I am, I couldn't resist. So, I took him inside and showered him in love.
Today we got all his essentials, food, litterbox, toys, and a flea & tick collar.
Unfortunately, we are low on cash, but I think we'll manage to afford him. It may be a month or so until he gets a trip to the vet for his shots, but it will happen.
he's still in pretty bad shape. His appearance is fine, but it's the small details that tell another story. His nose was dry and almost cracked when I found him, now it's starting to moisten again. His claws are worn down to the quick, pawpads are skinned and raw, he's goot a small scab on his lip, which looks like it could have been from another cats claw, and I've pulled off about 4 odd looking ticks now and seen about 3 fleas.
Any suggestions for cheap flea/tick medicine other than the collar? ALSO, he needs a name! A really cool name, cause I'm tired of cats with gay ass fag names.

1. What an adorable little guy! You're doing a great thing by taking care of him.

2. Not sure about meds, but someone here will know.

3. Name him Biscuit.
>> Anonymous
He has some pretty big looking claws..

The easiest and cheapest thing might be to pick up some flea shampoo, which is usually under $10. I'm not sure how well it'll work, but it's cheaper than medicine.
>> Anonymous
in b4 someone goes apeshit at you for using a flea collar.
>> Anonymous
>>299732
He only has a couple that are full length, and those ones are damn big.

I forgot to mention he seems to have an obsession with chewing on things, is this a sign me might be teething?
>> Anonymous
>>299742
Why? It's a collar for kittens. It's not harming him in any way. In fact, hal the time he doesn't know it's still there
>> Anonymous
>>299746
Well, i don't think i have seen a single collar that worked well enough to keep them ok.

I can understand your low on cash, but if you get some medz from the vet for it, it should be fine.

Just take good care of the little guy.

Don't ask me, I know every time someone comes in here with a flea collar on their cat the pretentious assholes of /an/ crawl out of their holes and flip a shit. Something about poisoning them, I don't know.

If you have nothing of value on your computer I'd reformat it. Good as new.

I might just end up doing that. We just reformatted it a month ago D: Stupid me trying to get a XP product key crack and got a virus instead.

That kitten has some big fucking paws. Does that mean he'll be a huge cat?
>> Anonymous
>>299762
Eh... they're kinda big. He's just got them stretched in that picture.

I hope he'll be huge :o

If that cat has Maine Coon in him he'll be a monster.

>>299767
I don't think he does though, not unless it's really subtle.
I think he's just a mutt, theres not a particular breed I see strongly in his looks

i just half to say thank you for takeing him in. its good to know that there are some good people in the world. and for the fleas try and ask the people at the petshop. some one might know something.

Nah. They're just fine as is. They compliment my boyfriends lack of them.
So it's cool.

Sooo... how about we go back to talking about the cat?

With better manners you could afford a better boyfriend who has money for the vet.
>> Anonymous
Cute little guy... but what kitten isn't?

Reminds me of my last cat. Has a very similar coat pattern.

Call him Seamus.
>> Anonymous
name him king koopa.

When my cat had ticks (from wandering about the neighborhood with other cats) the best solution i found was to get her the appropriate shots. It sure cost abit but it works and it lasts. She hasn't had any ticks or flees on her since despite going out every day and doing god knows what.

Since your cat is just a kitten tho and i'm assuming you don't let her out much getting her flee/tick shampoo and giving her a bath often and picking out what ticks you find (you can put them in thinner to kill them rather then flush them down the drain) should do the trick. You will want to get him the appropriate shots when he's slightly older however, especially if you plan on letting him out, might also consider having him spayed. Yeah it's cruel but IMO it's even worse to have him father a litter of kittens who'll end up being homeless and starve to death on the streets or something.

One thing to keep in mind is to take him to one and only one vet for all his medical needs, that way s/he can keep tabs on your cat. If you have any questions or are worried about anything you should ask the vet while your there, most will be more then accommodating.

A better boyfriend, or a richer boyfriend? There's a difference.
I'd rather stay with the one I have, even if we were both completely jobless and at rock bottom. Which kinda did happen, which is why we have no cash.

I'd rather be happy with my love of 6 years and poor, than miserable and rich.

Now. Back to my fucking cat. Name the goddamn thing.

>>299811
I appreciate the helpful hints, but I've owned cats before and knew all of this <3

I'm strapped for cash is all. I am takin him to the vet when I get the money for his booster shots, which I'm sure he's never had, and to be neutered.

Wal-Mart carries drops that remind me of Advantage. Sure, it may be the cheapo version, but think it'll do the same thing?
I hate giving cats baths. The way they respond to it is like you're about to gut them alive. =\
>> Anonymous
>>299815

ah sorry bout that, i just assumed that it was your first cat. They hate baths but you'll need to bathe him or atleast take the time to sit down and pluck out his ticks, specially if he's scratching allot.
I went through the same problems with mine when she was a kitten before i got her her shots. Now i just bathe her once a month for cleanliness sake.
Just make sure you stick the ticks in thinner like i suggested and not flush them down the drain, that won't kill them and they'll be back, it's a full time job trying to keep them at bay i tell you.

So king koopa's out for a name? huh thought it suited him with the big claws and all.
Well my cat's tri colored (light&dark brown and white) and i named her caramel sunday, maybe yours could be a chocolate sunday or something.
>> Anonymous
>>299820

I also have a sort of drops i apply behind her neck weekly that also helps keep the ticks away. You could look into that as an alternative to the tick collar but it still won't be much help if you don't take the time to get rid of the ticks already on her. There's also a spray version that's commonly used in kennels, might be worth looking into if your really opposed to baths.

I'm looking for a more... normal-cool name.
My other cats are Sassy, Patches, Miss Kitty, and Kit-Kat, and I didn't get to name any of them. I honestly hate all of their names except Sassy, because her's is short of Sasquatch (she has huge paws.)
Maybe I'll just look up baby names or something.

Yeah, I've been picking the ticks off and flushing them down the toilet. I might give him a bath tomorrow, hopefully he won't have a heart attack like most cats do. The fleas are a little more hard to catch by hand since he has long fur.
>> Anonymous
good for you saving a cat :D
dont use avg, "obtain" nod32.
Use the student version of xp.
Hows about hesperus? night and day, black and white?
>> Anonymous
hows about the joker? as hes painted his face a bit :D
>> Anonymous
I'm liking the name Atticuss.

I gotta run though, hopefully this thread will still be up when I come back tomorrow.
>> Anonymous
Flushing them down the toilet won't do much, unless you make sure you kill them first just a heads up.
Consider shaving him? you'll have an odd looking cat for awhile and it is usually a last resort but it will grow back, eventually. Cheapest and best way to deal with ticks, you can pluck them right off, ears may be abit of trouble however.

Normal cool sounding names? like people names? Well personally i go for names like Adrian, Lucian, Lenneth (ripp off) they all sound like they have strong character behind them. Sassy can also be in relation to attitude just so you know, and most cats are.

Name him Naglfarr (Nah GUL far) Because then every time people ask, you can tell them that is is the Nordic ship of Hel, made entirely of the fingernails of the dead. Then you get to look at their faces as they imagine a ship of fingernails. And that's fun.

My most recent stray was given the name Scabs, as she was scabby, until we got to know her better and give her a more appropriate name. We decided that Scabs is actually the best name for her.

Go with the flea bath for the kitten, and if there's something he consistantly sleeps on, freeze it when he's not using it, for an hour or so, to kill any eggs he may shed onto it. fleas in your home is NOT an infestation you want. He'll make sad face at you when you bathe him, but will forgive you, and be much better for not having parasites covering his tiny frail body.

such a beautiful cat :) we need more people in the world like you <3

ps. your legs are fucking amazing.

also! try getting avast, its a free anti-virus and it works amazing. i never got a virus since i got it and i've been to so many horrible virus ridden places. it cuts your connection before the virus can infect your coputer, and has a really good virus scan. its free! forever :)

i didn't know some of my cats were part siamese until they hit "puberty" if he's part siamese, you'll know.....

also about the size of the feet, chances are he won't get too big, some cats just have big feet, some grow into them, some don't. they're not like dogs

i took in a stray once and i found that the best way to get rid of the fleas, if you can't afford the shampoo, is to use a TEENY TINY bit of people shampoo (i used the free shit from the hotel, like smaller than a pea amount) lather him up good, in all the nooks and crannies. i had some really old lice comb from when i was a kid and had a lice scare at skool. they work pretty well to get the buggers out, and if you wash your kitten every other day he'll eventually get used to it. i used the bathroom sink, not too big and small enough to get him fairly well wet. try not to use hot water, just like very lightly warm to the touch.

>>299744
quite possibly. i believe kittens start teething around 6 weeks. but he looks a little old

GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN!

Hey guys, I'm back (with kitten in lap)

I think I am going to name him Atticuss so I can call him Atti for short :3
When I got home, he had a couple more ticks on him, and now I'm just wondering if they're randomly spawning off him. They're Seed Ticks, very small, round, and look like seeds. Hard to see the fuckers until I feel them.

I think we may go with the shaving idea, but I'm afraid the razor might scare him D: Is it okay to use a people razor? My boyfriend shaves his head with it, but I'm not sure if it'd work on fur.

I'm going to go give him a bath after this... so I hope it goes well :x
>> Anonymous
Wow, he did surprisingly well with the bath :o no fuss at all!
>> Anonymous
>>300635
That's good.

I've tried the cheap fake-Advantage stuff and it didn't work. I've had trouble with Advantage, too. Frontline Plus worked the best for me. Flea collars do NOTHING. Flea/tick shampoo is ok to kill the adult fleas on him.

Some vets sell single doses of Advantage and Frontline for about $10.... call around.
>> Anonymous
The ticks will keep coming as previously stated, which is why they are so hard to get rid off. The ones that are already on him will lay eggs and all over the place, him, furniture, ect. and when they hatch, well you get the idea.
It'd be best to use an electric razor to shave him, the kind where it's impossible to cut yourself. The noise may scare him so have someone hold him down when you do the job and remember to be careful around the face/ear areas as well as the paws.

Kittens usually don't make much of a fuss with water, or rather they can't. If you keep the baths consistent he should have little to no problem with them as he grows older.
>> Anonymous
>>300618

It's easier to use an electric razor than a safety razor or a cutthroat. Also, don't shave him exactly bald, leave him a bit of fuzz. Aim to leave about 1/3 of the total length of his fur.

GODZILLA!

Advantage has always worked for my cats like a mirical. So I got the drops and applied them yesterday, it's already going into affect.
Ontop of that, I got a Flea Comb, which ultimately works better than anything else. I've removed about 30 fleas individually from him, and now all of his ticks are gone.
I think if I keep grooming him with the drops driving the fleas to more visible places, it'll be cleared up very fast. Of course, we can only hope that the flea eggs are dead too.

We're still going to shave him, though. It'll make it 10 times easier to find the bastards.
>> Anonymous
Best thing against fleas is advantage or similar things. Collars don't help too much, aside from that I heard horror stories about cats getting chocked to death by those cause the collar got caught on something while they were playing... O.O

Just always keep the cat in the house, there are too many cats that are getting run over by cars or people catching and torturing them. Just yesterday on my way to work I saw a dead cat laying on the road, always breaks my heart to see that.
If you keep the cat indoor, you won't have many problems with fleas and ticks, especially after getting rid of them with advantage. I had 5 cats in my old apartment, advantage got rid of all their fleas within a couple days and thanks to that and the indoor fact I didn't have to use it again for two years (!!!!). Indoor cats very rarely have to deal with ticks either. Mine never had any.
Shampoos aren't very effective, and won't kill the fleas that are hiding at the cat's bed/favorite hideout etc.
Advantage though will kill the fleas on the cat as well as any other flea who is feeding on the cat for the next couple weeks, and if you keep the cat indoor the chances to get those parasites again soon are very low.

PS: Even though I mentioned Advantage all the time you might as well have very good results with Frontline and all the other imitations. I personally always used Advantage though since it helps very good and as said, I needed it only like every couple years. Aside from that there are 4 tubes in one pack.
>> Anonymous
>>300922
Yeah, we've always used advantage on our two cats, which is why I chose the knock-off version of it.
It's not really killing anything yet, but I can tell it's at least not somethign the fleas want to be around.
If this cheap stuff doesn't work, I'll just go get the real thing. It's not that expensive as is from the vet, anyway.
>> Anonymous
>>300932
Yeah, I think I have seen it at Wal Mart for a good price. It really is worth it - IMO - because it really gets rid of those fleas fast.
