I can't decide what makes me sadder, /an/: that my first and so far only cat, who has kept me company for over twelve years, died recently, or that every hour I find myself thinking that I should head over to a pet store or shelter to pick up a new one, as if I could replace her.

getting something new isn't replacing, it's a new and different cat that will have it's own merits.

don't feel bad.

a new shelter kitten will make you stop grieving your old cat after about 2 days and you know it anon () : )

my shelter has a big room full of all their adult cats...like 40 of them, it's fun to just go and play with them all

Stop thinking you are trying to replace your old cat. You need to get a new cat to help you get over your sorrow. If you just dwell on how nice your old cat was, you'll get nowhere, while you could instead offer a loving home to a kitten desperately in need of one, which would also give you something else to think about.

Like they all said, it's not a replacement. It's something new that can be just as meaningful as the first one. Besides, there's probably a cat or kitten at a shelter right now that needs a place to stay and be loved.

have the dead cat stuffed and place it on the mantel. no more tears and no need for a new kitty.

Don't get a kitten that looks like your old cat. Get something with longer or shorter hair and a different color. This helps your fragile mind get over it. eventually you won't ever see the new cat out of the corner of your eye and think "Old cat!"
