I've seen this 'bear spray' mace stuff around. Anyone know if it really works?

Also, would it work on non-mammalian animals, like crocs or snakes?

Something like this works on just about everything.

Not necessarily. Buckshot might just piss a bear off. A slug or two will probably do the trick, though.

i think it's just high-powered pepper spray

Works like a charm, brah!

It only works if you get within mauling distance and spray an unknown chemical into the bears face. The brochure recommends carrying two in case you are attacked by two bears at the same time.

Yep, solid shot works if you get 'em in the head. I have a .35 carbine with 2000 fps muzzle velocity, but you still would have to shoot the bear in the head. Lewis & Clark wrote about this. Bear-hunting with muzzle-loaders was EXTREMELY risky, and they had a hell of a lot of respect for Indians who did it with arrows n' spears n' so on.

This is just a technical note about how to protect yourself if worst comes to worst. I do carry a gun in bear country, but it's their home and I'm the intruder. So I make lots of noise and I want them to live...almost as much as I want to live. I would be very sorry indeed to have to kill a bear, they're good people.

I've heard some perfumes and colognes scare them away, because they smell really wierd, being petrochemical-based. Any idea if it's true?

Spray it in your face and see.

More likely to attract their attention.

you misunderstand buddy, that is not mace. it is a bear repellant, sort of like bug repellant? so you spray it on yourself, and the bears will avoid you... try it now! spray it liberally on your arms, neck, and torso...

i've actually came into contact with a bear. twice.
think it was the same bear too.

if you leave them they kind of leave you too. i just huddled up against a tree and shielded my eyes the first time and it wondered off (was around 2 metres away).
second time i was lucky. it was laying near a stream. it noticed me but i legged it. gueuss it couldn't be bothered.

FUCK YOUR BEAR SPRAY

Since crocs and snakes do not respond to capsaicin, no.
