Many birds watch over their youngsters for a couple of weeks while they are still too young to fly but large enough to scavenge for themselves.
My cat tried to hunt a magpie chick once, in our garden. Luckily I saw it and managed to hold my cat back. If you want to release it to the wild, let it regain strength and then take it back to the place where your mother found it. If you notice 2 birds flying around in the nearby trees, it's probably the bird's parents, however, since you've taken care of it for a while now, they might not recognize it.
Feed it and bring it to a wildlife center. If you have none near you, ask for a permission to adopt the animal :D, or see if it can survive on its own.
