Just got a betta, anything special I need to know?
>> Anonymous
needs moar neon lights
>> Anonymous
he needs a friend get another male betta to put in there with him.
>> Anonymous
he also needs more surface then that. He's not getting much gas exchange with that little bit of water touching air. He'll be half-suffocated all the time. And make sure that thing isn't closed, or he -will- suffocate. Fish will run out of oxygen just like people do if it's not in contact with the water.

As cool as he looks in the lava lamp, its entirely to small. You should figure about 1 gallon of water per inch of fish your keeping. so for a betta a 3-5 gallon tank should suffice.

Bettas are a labyrinth fish meaning that they have to surface every minute or so to breath, if they don't they die. Don't feed it flake food, as they are carnivours. Don't feed him the little pellets either, they really are not good for the fish and they don't like them. freeze dried blood worms are best to feed him lest you want to buy him live food.

Change his water about every week or get a low powered filter, and use the appopriate amount of water purfication stuff (Can't remember for the life of me what its called.), before putting him back in. I you don't buy that stuff, let the water sit for several hours untill you put him back in. DONT use soap when cleaning his tank or anything in it seriously that'd be stupid.

If you want to have more that one in the same tank your going to have to go with two or more females. for this you need at least a 15 gallon tank (they like their space). you cannot put two males in together as they'll kill each other. A male and a female cannot be put together unless your breeding them and thats an explination I don't wish to get into.

I've had Betta's in small tanks & they do just fine.

you know those little plastic octagon shaped tanks?

you don't need 3-5 gallons for a betta. I used to breed them and had litterally hundreds. they do just fine and will live a normal life span of several years in a half to full gallon as long as you do weekly water changes. you should also not feed them exclusively bloodworms as the other anonymous suggested. I've found that a mixed diet of pellets, bloodworms, and the occasional live food makes for a well rounded diet. as anon said though, they are a labyrinth/anabatanoid fish so they do need room to surface and breath (and in that lava lamp you'd need to make sure there was sufficient air exchange in that top portion.

as for the females together, this sometimes works and sometimes doesn't so you need to make sure you keep a close eye on them. 2 usually won't get along but if you add 3 or more this will diffuse aggression and usually they will establish a dominance hierarchy. if you breed your own females from the same batch of fry tend to do just fine together. breeding is not difficult at all, simply requires a half full 10 gallon tank, a hurricane lamp, half a styrofoam cup, and some broken clay pots. put the female in the hurricane lamp and let her and the male flash for a few days until he builds a nice nest under the cup and she starts flashing vertical bars (horizontal bars on her sides means she's stressed and not in the mood basically). let her out, keep an eye on her and let em do their thing. if they don't mate in about a day put her back in the lamp and try again a few days later. if they do mate immediately remove her. let the dad do his thing and remove him when you see free swimming fry.

When I was nine, a damn betta killed three of my other fish in my very first tank. It was very traumatizing. I put her in her own tank (a jar, actually) and fed her flakes and hardly ever cleaned it (I wanted her to die fast) and she still lived for over two years. Basically do the opposite of what everyone says it will live forever.

putting a fish in a bowl is nothing else than animal cruelty.
On top of that, no filter means the fish is swimming in his own feces.
Great idea.

Purchasing an animal without researching it first is entirely fucking stupid.

This betta in a fish bowl thing is disturbing. Just because they are equipped to live in dirt puddles does not mean they should be living in fucking lava lamps. What the hell is that about? They droop and look fucking depressed in these little one gallon bowls. They flourish in a ten gallon with some other species.

That kicks ass! The Lava Lamp tank
