What does /an/ think of the American Staford Terrier? The puppy also has some bull mastiff in it. I understand the Stafford is really gentle and docile, good for homes with cats. Is this a misconception?

Exceptionally friendly, American Staffordshire Terriers are natural guarddogs. A lack of overly protective and/or aggressive behaviour, accompanied by fearlessness, is generally a good sign. Such a dog is stable with children, friendly with new animals, and easily cared for by pet sitters. As an added bonus, a thorough familiarity with "normal" situations - the advent of the mailman or petsitter - will make "abnormal" or dangerous situations impeccably clear to a devoted pet. While normally friendly to people, threatening physical harm to an AmStaff's family is extremely ill-advised.

The American Staffordshire Terrier temperament is usually ideal for every owner or family. These dogs learn quickly from the subtlest of our behaviors. They are thus not only highly responsive during training but also pick up good habits for example, being house-trained.

Areas which have passed breed specific legislation banning or restricting the ownership of Pit Bulls and "pit bull type" dogs do not include the American Staffordshire Terrier in this legislation. They are perfectly safe family pets who need lots of love and affection.

also that selector thing just gives you the fag dogs that are best for you.

Agreed, mixed breeds are often just as cute as purebreeds, many times with better personalities and less chance of inbreeding. Puppies are cute, but many times you can find older dogs that are just as sweet and already housebroken.

Talk to someone at your shelter, usually they can tell you which dogs have been problematic.

Considering this is my very first dog, I'd -really- want a puppy. It's sort of been a childhood thing I've wanted all my life and now this is the first time I can actually afford to get one. I don't care about purebreeds or anything like that. I just want to get the best possible dog for me. Something that wont slaughter my cat or eat children.

Get a small or medium dog breed. If this is your first dog you DEFINITELY should not get a large dog.

I have a dalmatian. She isn't terribly smart but she's not too stupid. Very affectionate, she has killed wild animals in the backyard but she does great with all my other animals and she's wonderful with children. We found her on the road when she was about a year or two. Problem is that dalmatians usually develop hip problems(probably due to all the inbreeding it took to get them like this) and mine is getting to there.

Miniature pinschers are possibly the only to breed I've ever liked. But like most toy breeds, people cuddle them and treat them like babies which turns the little shits into yapping footballs.

look here

it has information and lists of purebreeds and hybrid dogs. it should help you.

Thanks for the help. I'd prefer a medium sized dog to a small dog. Small dogs just really don't do it for me. So your opinion on labs is poor?

Yes.
But labs are also the most popular breed of dog and you can always find a lab-mix. Seriously. Like almost every mutt I've ever met had lab in it.
Get a lab mix. You'll still have a happy, loving dog and will probably be a lot less destructive.

Thanks! On a side note, what about the Golden Retriever?

I own a lab, Labs are great dogs crazy smart, easy to train, 80lbs is a lot of dog to some people (my other dog is a mastiff so the lab is like a puppy lol). There is a reason they are used as seeing eye dogs, with decent training they can freaking do anything/ be anything you want, but they do need their walks/run time/play time, my mastiff if perfectly happy laying on my lap all day and night, my lab has to move. Goldens are a lot like labs, but its eaier to find one on the small side of the size spectrum, the lab breed has gotten lots bigger outside of the hard core akc crowd now 100lb+ are getting more common...it should be easy to find a 55lb golden though, which usually don't have the bad hips that are more associated with labs.
I would lean more to the golden if you want small/med size dog.
DO NOT GET A DALMATION AS YOUR FIRST DOG!! Read up

Amazing first dog, small, needs to run off some energy but can do it all in the living room of your apartment, clean, will be fine with your cat if it grows up with him, loves children, easily trained = beagle

If you have to have a more "bullyish looking breed" then min pins are good if you have the energy, more likely to piss off your cat though..or if you are more laid back, easy going, and have $800-1500 laying around, get an english bulldog, not many people have them, they turn heads and everyone wants to pet them, also nobody ever mistakes them for any of the "bulldogs" with the more "aggressive" reputation, also they are not included in the "pit bull" laws.
