I am an omnivore. I have pets. I aknowledge and accept that animals are grown and slaughtered for food. I also accept that there is no good, logical reason why some species should be spared when others are used freely. But there are some things that make even my blood boil:

>>Western slaughterhouses believe that a stressed animal produces tougher meat. Popular Korean belief is that due to the adrenaline rush it creates, the more painful the death, the tastier or more potent the meat. Hence certain animals are tortured to death rather than killed outright.

>>Cats may first have their bones broken with a hammer, before being boiled alive and pureed into a "health drink," which may be sold in plastic packets for home consumption. They may be beaten to death in hessian sacks. Cat soup is the preferred way to prepare cat meat and kittens are considered to have a more delicate flavour. "Goyangi-tan" (Liquid cat) (being a phonetic translation it is sometimes rendered "goyangi-tang" or translated as "cat stew") is believed to have medicinal qualities. Though they might not eat the cat meat, a soup paste made from cat is used to treat rheumatism.

Not really, periods are mostly blood and shed uterine lining, plus one egg just visible to the human eye. Chicken eggs are just that, eggs.

I'm sure there are Indians pissed that we kill and eat cows. Then again, there are Indians that kill and eat cows. It's not a monolithic culture.

And none of that is the point either. The point is that these sick fucks torture animals to death purposefully, because they think the suffering makes the meat more "potent". Cultural relativism only goes that far before it becomes an excuse to do anything at all.

Your argument is invalid. We boil lobsters alive because they taste better.

It's their culture, we should not be concerned with what they do.
>> Anonymous
>>317262
We boil lobsters alive, yes. Do we have conclusive evidence that lobsters even have the ability to experience pain? No. Do we have evidence that on the level on sensation and even basic emotions, cats and dogs are not really different from people? Yes.

Also, two wrongs do not make a right. If boiling lobsters alive is proven to be torture, then we should stop it, rather than use it as an excuse to let other people torture other species.

... Of course lobsters have nerve endings, you twat. It can experience pain. Sure, their intelligence is not similar to a cat's or a human's, but saying that's about as retarded as saying "autistic kids feel less pain because they see the world differently to us".

You can continue to judge the worthiness of an animal by how pretty it looks. The rest of the world will happily eat fish (somebody's pets!) pigs (as intelligent as us!) whales (they do no harm!) and any number of other things.

There is a reason to boil a lobster alive.Their meat spoils allmost instantly. As their death in boiling water is allmost instant. It is a plain and practical reason.

Torturing a cat to make some voodoo drink out of it isn't reasonable. It is disgusting and idiotic. If they killed because they like the way it tastes, that would be ok.

Wow, what a persuasive argument! Why don't you go tell the scientific community that you've solved a long-standing dispute about the ability of arthropods to experience pain! I'm sure you'll get a prize or something.

Also, I see you have managed to completely ignore what this entire thread is about. My congratulations, that takes some very highly developed illiteracy.

...Jesus. Where do these idiots all spring from?

Lobsters aren't really capable of feeling pain. They can detect differences in heat and cold but that's about it.

Also, the oft-cited lobster "scream" is actually caused by the rapid heating of air and water caught inside the exoskeleton. They also die pretty quickly once they're dumped in the pot, since their tolerance for high temperatures is pretty low.

Mammals; brain
Crustaceans; Nerve Cluster, decentralized nervous system

I won't take the time to study an entire phylum of animals for an answer on 4chan, but suffice to say, there's a big difference between the consciousness of a mammal and that of a lobster or crab. As far as my own stance, I personally find it hard to believe they experience pain as we know it. Suffering? maybe.
Now as for boiling lobster? It's to 'save' the meat, you have to prepare crab and lobster with a certain degree of knowing, otherwise the meat becomes tainted when they die. It becomes neigh inedible.
Whereas we have some people who torture animals to make them taste better, which I personally regard as not far above torturing an animal for entertainment. Maybe it makes life more interesting, maybe it makes you feel better. I suppose once one life hits a dead-end its wellbeing becomes moot to most people.

any animal that has pain receptors can feel pain.

Having nociceptors does not equal having the ability to experience pain. While I admit lobsters definitely react when the nociceptors are activated, what we humans understand as "feeling pain" is something created within our cerebral cortex, something lobsters simply do not have. So, I would say a lobster has the basioc ability to react to noxious stimuli, but that's about as far as we can go from our obseravations.

Whether arthropods can feel pain or not, isn't it better to take the more conservative approach and assume they do feel pain? If it turns out they do, then isn't it a pretty bad weight to carry, knowing that we've been boiling them alive? (I'm not sure what the most humane way of killing something is, though. Maybe boiling is okay).
Also, just because the shape or layout of a nervous system is different, it does not rule out the possibility that they can produce similar feelings. For a long time, we thought that insects did not have memories or that they couldn't learn, but this has since been disproven, even though arthropods don't have the same hippocampal region as mammals.

Pain is a natural mechanic that helps us. It tells us when we are getting hurt or when we are about to get hurt. When you grab a hot pan, you will instantly let go because it'll hurt. This is your brain sending your body a message that you have to let go before you get damaged even more.

All animals experience pain.

Ah yes, the pain vs. pleasure West vs. East culture argument.

You American fags will just have to learn to understand that Eastern philosophy has always focused on deprivation and pain as social and philosophic goods, while Western philosophy have diverged into pleasure-seeking to such a degree that John Stuart Mill could rally support for a moralistic philosophy called Utilitarianism that described the goal of humanity was to "provide the greatest good for the greatest number."

Eastern philosophies tend to side with the belief that pain and deprivation leads to enlightenment, the ultimate personal goal. To skip for ward in the reasoning a bit, this is why causing pain to animals is desirable, because if it has a benefit in increasing the moral fiber of human society, then doing the same to foodstuffs will make better food.

>the belief that pain and deprivation leads to >enlightenment, the ultimate personal goal

There's a difference between having a "personal goal" and having said goal shoved up your ass.

There is no difference from the point of view of the person applying the pain. Which, especially in the case of humans eating animals, is the only entity that matters.

Idiot.

So the western philosophy says that we should let the animals have what they naturally desire, that is, to avoid painful things. And the eastern philosophy says fuck the animals, we're in charge.

Right. Nice philosophy you got there.
