Just got 2 new hamsters. Top one (chinese dwarf?) is sleeping in the tube and the bottom one (panda) is trying to push through. Should I do anything? tried poking it in the butt but it just wiggles a little and goes back to sleep

Where did you get these hamsters? Sounds like they were trained for... purposes.

Holy fuck are you retarded??

Syrian hamsters (panda) have to be kept ALONE, and chinese dwarf hamsters have a reputation for being aggressive! THEY NEED SEPARATE CAGES NOW!

WHAT THE FUCK KIND OF IDIOT BUYS TWO SPECIES OF SMALL ANIMALS AND JUST TOSSES THEM IN A CAGE TOGETHER??

Judging from the look of them, they are both boring old teddy bear hamsters. As long as they are the same gender they'll be fine together.

Leave the sleeping one alone. His buddy will live, he'll wake up in a bit.

Not true. Even if they are both Syrians (their actual name, not the bullshit 'cutesy' names they make up in pet stores like 'teddy bear' and 'panda'), and of the same gender, they will tear each other apart when they go through their hormonal phase. Syrians are solitary, and will fight to the death. And 90% of the time, even if you raise them together from the time they're little, they'll fight and it will end very badly.

Only certain varieties of dwarf hamsters can be kept in pairs or groups, and even then they need a lot of space. Syrians absolutely cannot be kept together because there is no telling when they will get a burst of adolescent hormones and decide that their best friend needs to be killed.

Every knowledgeable hamster owner/breeder/vet will tell you that Syrians need to live alone. OP, get them into separate cages before the inevitable. (Also, in b4 everyone replies to this comment with their anecdotes about how their Syrian hamsters lived together all their lives, blah blah... EXCEPTION, NOT THE RULE!)

ITT: bullshit.

OP, I recommend returning one.

>>237273comes across as awfully overzealous but is pretty much correct. The folks at Petsmart really shouldn't have sold you two, anyway. But if you got one of the apathetic high school kids, well.. shit sucks.

Once those guys get of a decent size, there is a high chance of one being killed and the other one sustaining significant injuries. I can't tell you how many chewed up syrian hamsters I saw while working briefly in the pet trade.

When I was little, I even had a sister pair of these guys and one killed the other... and lost an eye in the process. Not a pretty sight.

Take advantage of your 14 day guarantee and get your money back for one - that's my advice.

lol, Petsmart.

Either buy separate enclosures for them or return one. If you have a large enough enclosure and you're certain one is a Chinese dwarf you may be able to keep another of the same species and gender with it so long as you're careful to watch for signs of aggression. A Syrian and any other hamster apart from a member of the opposite gender introduced for breeding purposes = an inevitable bloody fight and probably mutilation or death.

thanks for your help. looked around online and the one is definately a teddy bear, not chinese dwarf like they said :/ the other is a panda though. taking one back tomorrow since we definately dont want a hamster gladiator tournament going down. soon before i wrote this they started fighting over the wheel, so yeah. it goes back soon.

in the meantime, i know you guys get this all the time but any name suggestions for the panda hamster? it's a girl but all i can come up with is Wilfred

If they /really/ said one of those syrian hamsters was a chinese dwarf (you should have copies of the pet purchase contract, see what they wrote them down as - there might have also been a price difference, I remember chinese dwarves being more expensive than syrians), you ought to bring it to the attention of one of the managers - unless you've got a shitty store and the managers don't know any better, in which case you should send an email to the corporate office or something similar. When I worked at one, they were verrrry serious about making sure every animal went to the right home. Not all stores are equal, but if they're letting that shit slide, there is a problem and someone should be breathing down their necks about it.

ANYWAY, name ideas? Maybe something naturally black and white (Oreo?) or maybe after a famous panda?
