/an/ i just acquired a remora for my 700 gallon tank today and i have no idea on how to take care of it.(also i don't want any of the you shouldn't buy fish you don't know how to take care of, it was a donation into the laboratory where i work). if it helps there is a white spotted bamboo cat shark, 5 yellow tangs and 1 kole tang in the system with it. also the remora is about 18" in length. Filtration is not really an issue this tank has about 600 gallons of water in the sump system with a Berlin skimmer, a huge bio-tower also i have celpore in every space i can fit it with out harming the other fish. so if anyone knows anything about remoras please tell me. i'll post pics of my system tomorrow.

apparently they eat anything and are unkillable

also enjoy your new remora tank, take it out, put it in a sack, sling sack violently at concrete or brick, problem solved, I won't tell, nobody will know, you are not a bad person.

thanks for the links, but the tank is not a new shark tank i've had it set up for about 8 years and only had a white spottet bamboo cat shark for the past 6 years then i added the tangs, and earlier today some jackass who had the remora in a 55 gallon tank brought it into my lab saying he would kill the animal if he couldn't find a suitable home for it. so i looked over the remora and then put it into my tank. my real question involves behavior, is this an open water swimmer or will it sit on the bottom of the tank waiting to eat?

I think they are supposed to be prety active, I'm just hopig it doesn't latch on to a tang fo the lulz and the meatz

700 gallons? Holy shit.

for size comparasion the shark in that pic is a fully grown male and is just over 3 feet in length so it may not be exactly 700 gallons but it is damn near close. also how could anyone fit 6 tang a shark and a remora in a 70?

Here

That's a lot better set up than I had envisioned op lol.

And yes that looks like a 10x3x3 or so..almost 700g for the disbelievers.

biggest tank I ever put in was a 1000g reef, a lot more complicated than that tank and it was a bitch, but it looks very well set up for a fish tank in a lab and you sound like you know what you are doing.

Good luck OP and thanks for delivering

probably not actually, just clean the skimmer, replace the filter pads, and run an algae magnet over the glass..though actually that looks like it is acrylic, so you do have to be carefull not to scratch it, but in a lab I'm sure they don't get too up tight about scratches and they can always get a noob to buff them out anyway lol

>>307504here I do worry still though

Assuming your remora eats then he may be a glutton and not let your shark eat, or he may actually attach and damage the poor guy

How much does a 700 gallon tank cost? damn.

good news i got the remora to eat this afternoon, he took squid tentacles right from my hand, also he did not disturb the shark while i was feeding it with my tongs. another thing i think the tangs are too small for the remora to care about. the tangs are between 5"-7" inches in length while the remora is 18" long

cleaning it isn't that bad actually, but i am lazy and have been slacking lately and let my back wall get covered with hair algae. so instead of scrubbing i said let there be tangs and i figure i'll still have to scrub algae but at least i can feed some of it to some tangs and hopefully get beautiful massive yellow tangs.
also partial water changes are a pain in the ass, to do a water change i usually use about 150 gallons of saltwater, and i do this once a week. and some other oddball things about the system drive me nuts, however for the most part this system is a cake walk to take care of.

a friend is borrowing my digital cam right now so keep an eye out for more pics of the tangs, remora snd shark i will warn you there is quite a bit of algae on some of the surfaces but all the fish are very healthy. also does any one know how to get rid of head and lat line erosion, i have a panther grouper who is starting to develop this condition and i want to stop it before it gets worse

hey y'all
just found you guys, so I'm tickled someone shares my interest.

can anyone tell me where i can find exotic freshwater predators? specifically portarican snakehead, and arrowanas? and any suggestions for other large intresting or colorful, oddball preds would be really welcome The tank will start as a storebought 55, and when the time comes into a custom tank. the fish get mad good treatment. in my last pred tank prolly abou %50-%75 of thier diet consisted of fully fresh and still living food. up to and including small snakes.... ya wouldn't believ how that brings out the color in an arrowana!
anyway, thanx up front for anyone that can help me out a lil. i really appreciate it!

Just the tank? New? Glass? ~$4000 and up depending on who made it and how fancy it is, rimless, commercial grade etc...
>> Anonymous
>>307611
if you have the skill and free time i cost significantly less but it is quite difficult to do as i have built several custom tanks.

omg 700 gallons my tank is like, 20g and that is more than enough for me.
Btw, do you really have to change the water that often in a salt water tank? I though it kind of took care of itself.

Plywood, glass or acrylic?

Not OP, but when I had 250G of reef, I did 25% water changes every week, but I really liked keeping my chemistry to very strict conditions. But I don't know how many other people are propagating coral, so your experience may vary. Sucks that I moved with my job and had to sell off all my glass and 3 grand of SPS and LPS coral.

I had a 75G with a group of Synchiropus splendidus and maintaining that wasn't nearly as strenuous once I had enough 'pods colonizing the live rock. But getting to that point was kind of a bitch.

Anyone here ever try doing the aragocrete live rock, where I'm at now the guys at the local place sell fiji rock for almost $15 a pound, and I hate having it shipped in.

OP here

the bare minimum i could condone on a salt tank is a bi-monthly 20% water change, however to keep a system good and stable weekly water changes are recommended. also there are other factors that come into play when working with any fish tank like the type and amount of filtration, the volume of water in the system, the bio-load on the biological filtration, how often and what is fed, and the fish in the system them selves for instance i also have a toadfish in my lab and this guy is lucky to get a water change every month namely because he is alone in a 40 breeder with ungodly amounts of filtration(i did the math on the filtration one time and figured it could adequately run a 150 gallon aquarium) also he is only fed twice a week so he only needs that once a month water change, however compared to the shark system which has adequate filtration for its size it is almost stocked to the max and a weekly 20% water change is a must so it really depends on the system and the amount of dedication
