Hey, /an/, I just found a baby Red Eared Slider Turtle in the side of the road, no parents to be found. Im keeping it. What should I feed it? Ill be picking up some turtle pellets tomorow, but right now I'm just giving it lettuce. It dosent seem to notice it, though. Should I let it do its thing, or make another attempt?

Thanks.

Also, what are some awesome names?

reptiles dont tend to their young like mammals. babies take care of themselves. was there a lake/swamp/river nearby? if not it was probably dumped by irresponsible owners. how young is it? baby res dont eat veggies that much...try getting it pellets or fish to convince it to eat (some babies are STUBBORN and wont eat for a LONG time). also they cant eat out of the water...it needs a tank with water to swim in, a basking light, filter (they are messy eaters), and maybe some rocks it can climb up on to bask.

res are alot of work...esp when they get full grown (females get pretty damn huge and need alot of swimming space)...and they are pretty hardy animals so wont die off easily...

i have 3 res (2 males and 1 female)

I think I adopted one of those a couple years ago. The only thing I've seen them eat is other fish and bugs. You could buy the really small kind of feeder fish or crickets from the pet store. If you're cheap you could dig up some worms.

post more of your turtles!!

Thanks a ton.

Right now, I have a fishbowl with water and a rock in the middle. Ill get him supplies tomorow, an appropriate bowl, some feeder fish, and a light. How do you tell if its male or female? I assume its pretty young, about an inch and a half long.

According to /b/, his nickname is now Coldblooded Motherfucker. Pretty badass.

10-20 gallon tank at first. Then get a floating basking log...thing. That turtle will grow and a bowl is not going to be the best place for it.

How much do you think supplies will put me back?
I only have about 50-60$.

Probably not a good idea to keep that turtle then. I was looking into getting some turtles before, and I found out that while the turtle itself was cheap, the supplies for the thing get costly. I ended up getting a russian tortoise at first, then getting another one a couple months later. Very easy to take care of.

I can always loan money from family/freinds. I also get my miniscule paycheck soon, so that may cover some of it.

You need dechlorinated water, 10Gallon tank, Basking lamp with 50watt basking bulb that provides UV

Filters as well. It's probably a good idea to get a stronger filter than you would need too.

After finding a shitload of information on habitat and breeding, with a small loan from someone I could take care of him. It should equal about 110$ for a 40 gallon setup, But Ill start off with a 20 gallon tank as he(?) is pretty small. The ratio is 10 gallons to 1 inch, am I correct?

OP, Sorry, not breeding. I meant diet. Dont know why I said breeding.

10 gallons per inch is correct
in the long run it'll be cheaper for you to start out with a 50 gallon that should last him his first year.
Filstar XP3s are what i use on my turtles

he probably wont eat right away because of stress

make sure you get his water and basking places at the right temps, and a UVB light, those can all affect his appetite

or if you live somewhere that red-ears naturally live, put him back outside

Rule I have always heard for raising turtles is the enclosure sould be at least 4 times its length, 4 times its width, but the water should not be much more than 3 times the height of its shell.

You need something it can climb onto to sun bathe, you also need to buy a special sun lamp from the pet store.

If you feed it ANYTHING with fat, it will die, they can't process it. If you want to feed it meat, it has to be raw liver. Most vegetables and fruits are good, see what he prefers.

You only have to feed a turtle on lettuce 99% of the time. Go to a pet store and pick up floating turtle food pellets, as well as dried shrimp. Turtles are fucking nutterbutter for that dried shrimp crap.

Also, before you get attached, make sure you know what species it is!

I bought a "red eared slider" years ago. Turned out to be a florida cooter... which grew to be just over a foot long.

If the turtle gets big, you can build an enclosure out of wood, and line it with the rubber used for outdoor fish ponds.

If you put fish/plants/other turtles in the tank, the turtle will eat it, all of it, they are fuckign pigs. Also, don't put those aquarium rocks int he bottom of the tank, turtles are stupid and will eat them.
