What are some useful pets to have? I'm thinking about getting a cat to stop the rat infestation in my home. I caught 6 in the last two months already.

Rats are pretty big prey for a cat?!
Maybe a dog is better.

Don't cats eat rats?

at least the cat will hunt the rats and use them as toys

Depends on the cat. I'd guess some of the more overbred breeds might be a bit ...pussies. But yeah, some terriers might also be good.

terriers catches rats?

i had a long haired male persian cat, really fluffy and looked totally harmless, but it catch both mice and pigeons when it was in the garden

I heard that females are better than males to hunt rats
>> Anonymous

Probably a misconception. Females will bring their catch home while males will eat them or hide them, so you don't see male cats with dead rats that often.

Cats BTW are quite capable of catching prey as big as rabbits.

Siameese cats are good ratters generally, but terriers were bred specifically to kill rats.

Scottish terriers are fun. Loud, but fun, and they don't look like their prey (unlike, say, chihauhas).

A Dachsund can also be good for weeding out vermin. They're very good pets and aren't easily scared, so they'll go after most anything that doesn't belong.

My family's old dachsund attacked a skunk once. He got sprayed, but he hurt the skunk a hell of a lot worse than that stuff did to him. So, they'll go after big stuff too.

My female stray cat (no particular specie) loves to hunt and bring her preys in the house. Alive, most of the time. So far she brought back a dozen of mice, 3 birds, a baby rabbit and two goldfishes (from our neighbour aquarium...), all of them uninjured.

That reminds me of my cat.
She brought me a live mouse..in my bed. After batting my nose to wake me, with claws out, she dropped the living rodent on my chest and meowed at me. Complete with proud pose and 'smirk' on her face.
She wasn't impressed when I got up, catapulting her off my bed as I tried to get out of the covers the mouse had just ran under.

Bullshit the goldfish were uninjured, they would have to be fucking dead

They're trying to teach you to hunt.

when i ever saw my cat with a mouse in its mouth, it would drop the mouse on the ground, and the mouse would start running away, and the cat would then pick it up again, wonder why they walk around with live prey? maybe its just a sort of game? like they like hunt but are not really hungry and prefer the kitty food they get at home

She taught me well then. I'm quite good at extinguishing little vermin with my cat-like foot stomp.
But I think she's ashamed of me as I now have a rat, two gerbils, and a dwarf hamster as pets.

it tried to feed you, since it think you are the weak member of its family and need help hunting food

I'd go with a dog. Terriers, as someone said, are a good bet.

Cats are useful in the house, but they can wreak havoc on the area around the neighborhood, if you let it outside. Even if you don't let it outside, it'll get out somehow and probably harass the neighbor's bunny or something.

Like...seriously, they can be such a bitch sometimes. D<

A dachsund probably is the best bet for a pet that will kill vermin.. cats do bring in thier prey to leave it as a present.. like thier head or a body part.. on the porch.. or in your shoe (my cat mittens left a dead lizard in my mother's shoe)

Cats will bring parts of a small animal back to their kittens at first so they can get the taste of it. Then they'll bring critically injured animals so their kittens learn to finish it off. Each time they bring more and more 'alive' animals to teach their babies how to hunt and eat. So, your cat thinks you're little and/or incapable of hunting. She's trying to get you to kill it and teach you her hunting skills.
