Hey /an/, I need pictures of isopods because they're cool as hell. A repost is fine too.
Sadly this is the only picture I have to offer you.

I browsed three screens past this post, hoping to put it out of my mind. Then I had to Wikipedia isopods, and I'm still going W-T-F! Wikipedia sez "Their morphology is nonetheless familiar to most people as giant isopods closely resemble their terrestrial cousins, the woodlice..." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_isopod).

Yeah, but woodlice are 3cm long! These bastards can get to 45cm!

Look like giant fucking cockroaches, to me.

were there a god these things wouldn't exist

what do these taste like?
>> Anonymous
>>61697

I think they taste a bit like lobster; I saw some Japanese variety in which they made one fried, boiled, teppanyaki, and as sashimi. Apparently it was rather delicious, according to the people on the show. @_@

Do you think these things are related to Trilobytes, guys?
>> Anonymous
>>61720

Only in the same sense that crabs and spiders are related to trilobites.
>> Anonymous
I was under the impression that they were closer to pill bugs.

OP, to get almost every picture of them posted here regularly, go to Google Image Search and type in "Giant Isopod." You will also get pictures of the tooth fish and the one that eats its tongue.
These things are cool, I wonder if they can be kept in an aquarium?

Yup. They can survive the pressure change much better than most organisms, and can sometimes be found in captivity. The problem is actually getting one.
>> Anonymous
>>61780

Under special conditions and bothersome care. Given that he probably wouldn't survive very long.

Long lived neo-prehistoricalesque creatures like this are often very sensitive to change.

Ok reconsidering my previous uninformed stab, you seem to know more, even though the pressure change what's the longevity of these critters?

Neg, they have a strong urine taste from the news article I read.

I'll try to find it in a bit.

my immediate response whenever i see a picture of these things is "KILL IT WITH FIRE"

Plus, they're seawater critters. You'd need an xbox-hueg aquarium to keep one, perhaps even twice as hueg as an xbox.
>> Architeuthis !n8DM/3U.xE
The Florida Aquarium has several Isopods on exhibit, in unpressurized aquariums; the Fort Worth zoo also has a couple. The temperature stays about eight degrees celsius, so they need to stay cold. They are also kept in the dark.

Apaprently, they eat small fish, worms, sponges, etc. Basically, whatever they can get their mouth pieces on, since food where they live is scarce. Dried shrimp and fish food work in captivity; its probably not best to keep them in an aquarium with fish swimming around and sponges and such as decoration, as they can adapt rather well to both a surplus of food and a lack of food.

I've been looking in scientific journals, looking for one that has their life span; although I even perused some from the 19th century, none stated how long they live.

Can these really survive outside of water for a while? Or was some guy just posing dead ones.

They do well enough outside of water to have a thing for Doritos. Someone have that pic of them munching on the bag?
