My 5yr dog a beagle/pointer has terminal cancer. I found this out last Friday. He won't eat, and pees and throws up all the time. Since I adopted him and only had him a month I'm pretty damn upset. I have the option of putting him down tonight or just letting him live this way. I really don't know the right choice? Does anyone have any options?

As much as it pains me to say it, it might be better to put it down, if it cannot be cured. it saves the dog a lot of suffering, but ultimately, it's really up to you and what you think is best for both you and the dog. It really sucks to own him only for a month. :/ Best of luck.

I had a hound with this. The vet can put him on pills and basically what is doggy chemo, but it's pricy and not guaranteed to do anything. There is some community website out there about dog cancer and options, and since your dog is younger he may have more of a chance to overcome it. Personally, I had my dog put to sleep, but he was a bit older.

Also, at the risk of sounding morbid, if you got him from a shelter with a pricy adoption fee and plan on adopting another dog in the near future, take your vet bills to the shelter and explain the dog you got from them was ill - they may waive the adoption fee. I worked at a shelter who had this policy because of people who adopted the old sick dogs.

There's no easy answer to this question -- it depends on the dog. However, if I were in your case I would probably put him down, as it sounds like he's suffering terribly.

Agreeing with putting him down. It sounds like he's in rough shape, so I really think this is best. My deepest condolences though.

If the animal won't eat, that's usually a sign that it's time to let go. Sorry.

I'd suggest going to another vet for a second opinion and maybe another diagnose- one vet told me my dog had serious heart problems and it turned out he was just plain stupid.
If it is untreatable, hug him, tell him you love him, and invite the vet home to put it to sleep.

He probably got sick from the pressure of being thrown away at his age. I am sorry for you, but you did very kindly giving him love at his last days.

I'm still in shock every time I see a compassionate anon.

chemotherapy is a good route if the dog means a lot. But expect to put in money for a good 40 year.
