I suggest starting off with a small fresh water tank, and working you way up to salt. Salt is a vey expensive hobby and if you dont know what your doing its going to cost you a buddle.
When your starting a saltwater tank, make sure you cycle the tank for at least 3 weeks, any sort of fish you put in there will die very quickly. Live rock will speed up the cycle process.
I have both fresh and salt. I've had them for nearly 2 years now, and I was never a fish person, I have a friend that had one and its kind of addicting. Good luck with your fish, also I suggest getting puffers if you do go salt, they are fighters and even if you water isnt perfect they wont drop dead.
