So /an/, I'm setting up a female betta tank, and so far all I have is a 10 gallon tank, and a filter. It will house 3 females. I have a few questions for what to do next.
-Substrate: I'm looking for something with a sand-like quality, as I dislike the standard aquarium gravel. What should I use, and how do you clean fish excrement out of sand?

-What should I use for shelter (plants, caves, etc.)?

-How should I choose suitable females, and how should I introduce them into the tank to minimize fighting?

Thanks in advance.

Correction: There'll actually be 4 females together, as apparently this is the minimum safe number. My mistake.

I read somewhere that they fight initially, but calm down eventually

I have had female bettas before and something thats seems to help with preventing fights is choosing fish that are very close to the same size and age if possible.

Lies it's 5. and you're going to need a slight bigger tank than a 10 gallon.

and they will fight a little at first to establish a pecking order. Just let them have plenty of room, and enough females to even out the aggression.

there can be only one.

-Sand, I guess. You just have vaccum some of it out and replace it. You know you don't have to have substrate.

- Plants, and caves, etc.

- In my experience you just introduce them all into the tank at the same time. I've kept trios and quartets of females together with no problems until I tried to introduce a new female. I don't think age is an issue, I had two babies and one adult betta in 10 gal, and they got along fine. But that's just my personal experience.

having bred bettas for several years, the minimum number shit is just that, shit. chances are they will fight and you will lose 1 or 2 until they determine a hierarchy. the best way to have females get along together is to chose fish that are from the same spawn and have been in the same grow out tank. i tell people at work to just keep 1 female just like the males unless they are ready to lose some.
