Rodents of most types will cannibalise their litter, and rabbits will refuse to raise their litter in the event that a human witnesses the birthing process/nesting place/the litter itself before weaned. Dogs and cats don't have as much of a problem because they've been domesticated longer.
This is why nesting hutches for rabbits include a blocked area, and owners are told not to look in at least until 4 weeks after.
Except, it's very difficult to not be exposed to the damned thing. So yeah, it's pretty much a hit-and-miss thing and generally not the fault of hte owners.
