What're those big ol' circular scales on an iguana's jawbone called? More importantly, do they even have a purpose?

"Another striking characteristic of the green iguana is the large circular subtympanic scale, located on the cheek just behind the jaw. Its large size and opalescent white color make this scale serve as a bright visual beacon for other iguanas, reinforcing and emphasizing the iguana’s territorial head bobs. It may also serve to frighten off potential predators by appearing to be a large fearsome "eye", making the iguana look more intimidating. In adult male iguanas, the jowl areas underneath the subtympanic scales will swell outwards considerably as a secondary sexual characteristic, giving the head a more bulky and massive appearence than in females. The large bright scale thus tends to emphasize and reinforce the male’s heavy jowls, making him look even more impressive. Despite its wonderful protective qualities, keratin is dead and cannot grow."
