hi /an/

I have a jack russel puppy, his name is finn. yesterday he walked into my room and I found his whole face swollen and covered with bumps. Upon further inspection I found his entire body was covered, and his tummy had a big rash. He was very out of it and whimpered a bit if I touched his stomach.

so i called up the vet with the intention of bringing him in, and they told me that it sounded like an allergic reaction and that there was not much they could do for him if that's the case. They told me to give him a quarter of a benadryl and just wait.

So I did, he seemed better a few hours after giving him the benadryl, he was a bit more energetic, and the swelling went down.

Now it's about 24 hours later, and I'm concerned. His swelling has gotten worse since last night, not quite as bad as before I gave him the benadryl though. He's got a lot of swelling around the eyes. He's once again lost his energy and his appetite.

He looks very pitiful. So /an/, am i just being a big baby and need to wait a bit longer or what?

pic related because that seems to be how my cat is reacting to the ordeal.

take him in to get checked; it will make you feel better and him feel better, too. It'll also give the vet a chance to take a look at him and figure out what's going on. Better to be safe than sorry- epspecially if the little guy is in pain.

Just my humble opinion. :)

another dose of benadryl?

take him to the fucking vet.
better yet, call up a different one. the one you called can't diagnosed him over the phone. your puppy could have consumed something toxic that might even need to be pumped out.

You should probably try to figure out what could be causing the allergic reaction, first of all.. If the vet says there's little more that can be done for him, they're not lying. Watch him, see where he goes and what makes his condition worse. Check the food you're feeding him too. Good luck.

If this is a new thing, firstly, hide any new items you might have bought recently. Synthetic material bedding, for instance is a great allergic-reaction catalyst. Judging by the location of the reaction, it's something he's eating and/or sleeping in. Is it spring where you live? I know a fair few jack russels which are allergic to grasses and pollens. Try keeping the pitiful thing inside for a while, see if this makes a difference. Lastly, has he been on any new foods recently? If so, go back to what he was eating before. Especially if his new food contains added colouring of some kind. Also for the meantime consider feeding him foods which are made of things with near-no colour whatsoever. Chicken with white rice in it, etc. These foods tend to be the least allergy-causing.

it probably is an allergic reaction, but if it's reccurent, you need to take the little guy to the vet. they may be able to give him a steroid injection that will be a more permanent solution than the benadryl. in the mean time, try to figure out what he got into and get rid of it!
