Dearest /an/,

One of my cats, and elderly gent, scratches around his water bowl before drinking like he's digging it up.

We adopted him at around 8-9 years old so no idea where he picked this up. Anyone got any thoughts about why he does this? Is it common? We've have 6 cats and he's the first to do it -_^.

Don't let them hear that, there will be ... trouble.

yeah. its the bury your food instinct. (in reverse.. if your food's buried, like any self-respecting wild cat would do, it has to be dug up..)
I've had cats that would bury their food for minutes, scraping at the floor, the dishwasher, standing up on their hind legs to scrape up high on the wall..

Cats learn these sorts of behavioral traits from their mothers. It's the same way they learn to bury their business in a litter box, you find that cats raised apart from their mother don't bury their shit.

I can't imagine why a cat would dig before eating, though. Maybe it's used to having to dig a well for its water in the wild >_>
