sup /an/

For the first time ever I'm contemplating getting a dog. i want it to be a tough dog i can wrestle with (not abuse), take to the park have fun with and all that. And yet intelligent enough to NOT attack and pwn every little thing that walks by it (like pitbulls or jindo's).

Right now I'm contemplating between a Rottweiler and a Doberman... I also think Akita's are cool, but their breed seems very expensive and I'm unsure of their intelligence level.
What does /an/ think?

I think you should go to a shelter and find one. They have dogs of all sizes and temperaments, there.

I'm going to have to agree. Get a shelter dog. And don't discount dogs based solely on breed; the sweetest dog I owned was a pit bull. Her face was less than pretty but she was incredibly friendly and loved everybody she met.

I've known two Akitas. Both were dumb as rocks and one was violent and actually bit my friend in the frigging neck.

now that's a doberman...

doberman today are like pussy version both in looks and temperaments

Don't get an Akita unless you will be living by yourself without any other animals, Akitas are highly intelligent and loyal dogs but they are also highly aggressiveand tend to not get along with other animals. I definitely do NOT recomend that breed to someone with little dog experience. I think you should research the breeds you want throughly before going through with it, otherwise you will end up going with the puppy you thought was cute and would be awesome that turns out to be uncontrollable and then taken to a shelter. I'm only saying this because I work with dogs on a daily basis and I hate idiots who go and by a dog because of the breed, do your research first.

APBT is the way to go. Very loyal, great with kids, and as long as you train in properly and socialize it with other animals it won't attack other animals. They were bred to not attack humans and only want to please them.

Speaking from experience, Dobermans are very athletic but sort of independently stubborn. They need activities, because they can be intelligent in an annoying way like a husky and will look for something to get into if you neglect it. Dobies are great for people who like to go out and take their dogs with them.

Rottweilers are very goofy. Not very smart, but playful and cuddly (assuming you don't just leave it out in the yard). They're much better for a beginner, but you will have to socialize and train it so that it won't turn into one of those assholes that barks at and bites people or kills cats. Socialization and training is important because of their mass, they can bowl over people and hurt children. They need ultra durable chew toys because a rottie pup can gnaw through anything.

Go German Shepherd, superior to both

I suggest researching different kinds of breeds, reading about their temperments, average intelligence levels, ect., dont just get a dog cos you think it's 'manly and tuff'

also, seconding the shelter opinion

Is there any badass looking dogs that aren't rott/dober/akita/pitt? Thinking how great it would be to have an intimidating beast looking dog, with beauty fluffy dog alongside.

I say pitbull, they are sweethearts and loving. Mine never attack other people, even if it is somebody they don't recognize. They just run up to the person and want some luvin'. I have two of them and the only problem is the puppy likes to eat everything...like a hair ball.

>a tough dog i can wrestle with
then don't buy a dobermann. they tend to be the nervous type and might bite you if you did anything they would concider threatening.

go to the shelter... get a pit or shepherd mix. shelter dogs are best

Don't go for a rottie unless you have lots of room for him, those things get huge.

a proper pitbull is a total pussy that will love anybody that doesn't kick it in the face. even then it might love you anyway, you monster.

you have to be careful letting it around other dogs though. they were originally bred for high dog aggression, zero human aggression - so that oldschool dogfighters could just reach in and seperate the animals without getting bitten.

finally someone who knows what they are talking about. YOU CANNOT "train" or "socialize" animal aggression out of pitbulls. hundreds of years of breeding this trait/instinct into them does not magically go away with training. you can try to repress but it can come out at any time, usually when least expected. try training a retriever not to chase a ball while you're at it.

Still great dogs, you just have to keep them on a leash and carefully monitor any interaction with other dogs/know your dog well enough to know how to avoid trouble. If an individual pit bull can't handle being at the dog park, don't go to the dog park, etc.

I'd say Great Danes. They are hueg but they are still Huggybears.

get a large mongrel, they're cheaper and are less likely to suffer from crippling hereditary diseases.

We have 9 dogs here, 6 of which are pitbull/labador mixes. (which were abandoned on our property)>>289530pretty much hit it on the head. Sweet dogs. Good listeners. Sometimes you gotta watch em when you don't feed em properly (or they fight over the food), and they do fight worse than normal dogs would, but never have I ever been worried about getting mauled by them. Fights can be broken up by a simple grab of the collar. Or a bamboo stick. And we have 6 of em, mind you.

As for public interaction, half of em peed the first time they saw another dog, so, yea. They just have a bad rep.

I recommend an American Bulldog. Very friendly and bulky enough to wrestle around with. It also avoids some of restrictions placed on breeds like Pit bulls, rotties, etc. The only one I've ever met pissed itself when it saw a Yorkie.
