This is /an/, neither /a/ nor /v/. Also, of course nobody is going to protest on behalf of ticks and fleas - ever had your dog or cat's parasites leap on you, even for a few hours?

>>174679

Protesting whaling and dolphin fishing is hardly PETAfaggotry. There is something innately disturbing about ridding of a species that exhibits behaviour similar to humans because we see ourselves in them. It's the same reasons other people will give for refusing to eat dog or cat meat: we spend a long time with such animals, and tend to project our motives and personality in them.

I'd eat Dolphin. I think it is silly to ban eating of animals that we are attached too. My cat would eat me the first chance it got and so would yours.

I love animals. I also love to eat them. I am all for conservation. I am all for treating animals well. I'd like to continue to eat animals for years to come. So yes, lets keep them in good health and population.

it's really un-apetizing to watch your meal getting killed in front of you. but as long as they use most of the animal for food. i think it wrong to needlessly torture animals like bull/dog fighting. but if your starving, then it's okay to kill a wild animal.

Actually, there is a danger of dolphin meat though. There are high amounts of mercury in their systems that can be lethal to humans. So I'm not touching it.
>> Anonymous
>>175062

I don't think you understand mercury poisoning.

Dolphin meat contains trace amounts of mercury. It is not even remotely enough to cause acute mercury toxicity. It meets Japanese government standards for mercury content, and you don't see people dropping over dead from eating it. It will not kill you.

However, if you eat a lot of dolphin meat (frequently) then the mercury levels will build up in your body over time, and while that won't kill you, it can cause negative side effects if you eat enough of it.

Bottom line: It's not worth worrying about unless you are (or plan on) eating a LOT of dolphin meat.

I have always admired the people of Japan with one exception...their unusual cruelty to sea life. I don't have any issues with their harvesting of fish, but I do have real issues with their hunting of 'intelligent' creatures. That is murder in my mind.
>> Anonymous
>>175075

Not... really. Their dolphin meat may, but their porpoise meat certainly doesn't. It's something like 10 times over the recommended limit, and the govt is hushing it up while trying to feed their schoolkids the toxic stuff.

The methods they use to harvest the dolphin are what I find most disturbing...

They usually maim one first. The rest of the pod won't abandon their injured family member, so instead of fleeing, they stick around and get hacked to death.

The methods they use to justify this recent hunting is what I find most disturbing:

They feed it to their schoolkids to reinforce the idea that it's purely part of "tradition" to open a whole dolphin processing plant.

...They think if they do this long enough, they can claim it's "tradition".

If you are going to hunt, either kill it quick, or come up with a creative way to do it, rather than blatant torture.

Also, dolphins suck.
>> Anonymous
>>175674

Exceeding the standard limits by 4 to 5 times is nowhere near enough to cause acute toxicity. You'd probably need a thousand times (perhaps more) to cause acute mercury poisoning, even in a sensitive individual. Keep in mind that even into the 1800's mercury was used as a medicine. Patients would be given liquid mercury to drink in order to flush out intestinal obstructions or to kill parasites. While poisoning did occur in many such cases, nobody died immediately from it (acute toxicity). You then had Calomel and Blue Mass / Blue Pill...again, people did suffer symptoms of mercury toxicity after repeated use of these medicines. But again, no chronic poisoning.

Mind you, I still wouldn't want to be eating it. At those levels it would only be safe to eat once every few weeks.
>> Anonymous
>>175703
http://www.guardian.co.uk/japan/story/0,,2162843,00.html

What if I told you it's 10-16 times?
>> Anonymous
>>175707

Again, it's not anywhere near enough for you to worry about it, unless you are eating it frequently.

Here's what you need to understand:

1) Mercury is just not that toxic. Yes, I know that various reporters are going crazy talking about how bad mercury is. But it really isn't that bad. I mean, people used to DRINK it for god's sake. And usually nothing happened, but if you did it few times, then you started showing symptoms. If you stopped the exposure, the symptoms went away with time. If you didn't stop, then you got worse and you died. Even deliberately taking mercury on purpose isn't enough to cause acute toxicity, and that's thousands of times stronger than the "standard".

2)The "limits" aren't really limits. The published "safe amount" is catered to the lowest-common-denominator, for constant use, and they have a huge margin of safety. So, if it meets the standards then it's perfectly safe to eat a full portion of it, repeatedly, long term. So, if I can eat 1ppm Dolphin every day, then I can eat 2ppm every other day. Or 3ppm every third day....etc. If it's 10x the limit then it's OK for me to eat it every 10th day. Include the factor of safety, and for a person in reasonably good health, it's probably just fine to eat every 5 days or so, even fairly long term.

You certainly wouldn't want to eat that every day, but once a week? nothing to worry about.
>> Anonymous
>>175717

The schoolkids are eating it in their lunches, and remember, in Japan, school is six days a week, and they only have vacations once a semester.
>> Anonymous
>>175724

Yes, that's definatley too much to be safe if it's being eaten every day (unless it is a tiny portion)

Dolphins deserve no special attention from humans. I bet you whiny fags eat beef and chicken, don't you? Are you aware that rats exhibit signs of intelligence seen only in higher primates? I bet you're not, and you would still set traps to kill them if they got into your house.

A dolphin is not special. It deserves no more or less human attention than any other animal. If you're gonna bitch about something, bitch about slaughterhouse conditions in the US, where most animals are stuck, scalded, and skinned without even being knocked unconscious first. The majority of the cows and pigs that get butchered take about 10 minutes do die from the time their heads are skinned.

Oh, but dolphins are cute. So do go on.

>> Anonymous
>>176363

Speaking of failure, if you've had duck and the duck was "tough" that is FAIL as well. I love duck, and if it is cooked even remotely right it's not tough at all.

Also, I've only had swordfish twice--both times at upscale restaraunts, and it didn't have a fishy smell at all. As far as I know, "stinky" seafood is seafood that has gone bad. Fresh seafood smells like the ocean. A rancid "fishy" smell means that the fish has gone bad.
>> Anonymous
>>176365
Dolphin flesh does stink. That's why even a lot of the Japanese that have tried it aren't that crazy about it, and say that whale is a lot better. Apparently it does taste a lot like beef or venison when properly cooked, which makes sense if you consider that the closest living relatives of whales are hoofed mammals. Most of the Japanese outside of Taiji have never tasted dolphin, though. In fact if you asked the average Watanabe what they think of dolphin hunting, he wouldn't even know what you're talking about. It's a strictly regional phenomenon kept alive by a few handfuls of people.
