Okay, tonight I was sitting in my room when my cat sat by my feet, staired at me and continued to do so for about 10 minutes. He didn't want to come on my lap and he would dodge my hand when I tried to pet him. After a bit I felt a quick tap on my hip, looked down to see him run off. I ignored it, but about a minute later he hit me again. Then a third time.

I got up and he bolted off. I followed him and he stopped, waited for me to get close and ran off again. I eventually caught him and he was purring and happy for such a long time.

This little game happens a lot, but before today I didn't think much about it.

I've heard that some breeds of cats like to play chase games.

Do you think that my cat is playing some weird cat version of tag?

Pic is him

My cat does this as well, and it's really something I love about cats. They just sort of beckon you to play with them. In really, really ridiculous ways. And you play by their rules.
My cat would do this thing where he'd meow at my door for fucking ever, but when I opened it he'd sprint off. I'd search for him, and the moment I found his hiding place, he'd run off and find a new one. If I managed to pass him and not notice him hiding, he would either paw at me or tackle me if I was on my hands and knees. Of course, if I somehow manage to 'win' the dumb game, he's the most affectionate thing ever.
Cats get bored, and they use us to make it not so.

Sometimes my cat sits behind a door or a box and stares at me. He'll tilt his head so I can only see one ear and one eye. He stares and stares. When I go to him, he'll run away in a very silly, bouncy way. I'll follow him into another room, where he's hiding somewhere, and try to spot him, then I'll turn around and run away (also very bouncy). I'll hide behind a door or the couch. He runs after me into the room, looking for my hiding place. Then I'll jump at him and he'll run away again and I chase him.... This silliness can last for a while.

Cats are so funny <3

PS: He plays the same game with our second cat. They'll speed through the rooms, chasing each other alternatingly. The second cat never played that with me or other humans tho.

My cat loves playing hide and seek. She'll hide somewhere in the living room, most usually behind the couch or the long curtains (but she has other places too) and start meowing. She stops meowing immediately if you enter the room, but starts again if leave before uncovering her hiding spot. Sometimes it's enough for her if you find her once, but other times she'll find another hiding place and the game starts anew.

My cat used to do play tag when she was a kitten, but when she got older, she stopped playing. In fact, she stopped playing anything, period. Snooty ass, thinks she's too good to get worked up over a laser pointer...
>> Anonymous
My cat thinks he's completely hidden when he sits on the stairs as I'm coming down. He'll peer at me with one eye while I pretend not to notice, then he'll bat at me really quick to declare himself winner and scamper away.

I had a cat like that, except he would play if he didn't think anyone was watching.

He'd even be nice to the other cats, clean them and such, play with the kittens... but only if he didn't think any people were watching. As soon as he realized he was spotted by a person he'd bat 'em away and act like they were invading his personal space or something.

I love that cat.

My cat loves hide/seek game too. He would come into the room and start making long meows or rolls on the floor to taunt with his belly. When I get up he starts to run.
I call our game "ambush". I try to hide from him but let him see where I'm hiding so he can ambush me and then I would chase him.
I ambushed him couple of time too but he really doesn't like being ambushed.
I was hiding near the box on my knees, he jumped real fast by me and slapped me on a cheek with a paw.

my cat used play tag, he would come in the room and stare you down and as soon as you paid notice to him. he would snap into this crazy sprint away stance and get this crazy look in his eye, as soon as you moved he would dart off. i would chase him around the house until i "tagged" him on his back then i would turn and run the other way, he would chase me until he got his teeth into my ankles and i would surrender.

I'm allergic to cats. ;_;

My cat did this as a kitten, but I had to put a stop to it. You'd be sitting there reading or asleep or whatever, and she would bolt from her hiding place, smack you on the face and then run off again to do it again. Fine as a kitten, and pretty cute (albeit startling). Not so fine as a 15lb hulking monster, although she'll still occasionally try it if your face is at approximately her eyelevel and you're not paying attention.

You have a bombay too ^_^

Mine is really docile though, the only time he swats at anything is when my other cat tries to wrestle with him. Then he just pulls out his front claws and automatically wins since my other cat is de-clawed xD

Hahaha, my cat, Schala did this last night AND today. She puffed up her tail and went galloping all through the house. I thought she just wanted to play bu herself until she came over to my computer chair, stood up, put both paws on my leg and then TOOK OFF. That was my cue to chase her and then hide behind the doorway so she can stalk me, jump out and then go hide somewhere else. She's 8 years old and still VERY insanely playful. Love her so much. Cat games are remarkably fun even for humans!!!

This is her, being awesome.

I have what might be a Bombay, but he's a dumpster kitty, so I don't know. He sure looks like it, though. Anyhow, When he goes to the litter box upstairs, he comes down the stairs slowly, then about 3 steps from the bottom, he JUMPS AND FRICKING RUNS AROUND LIKE HE'S ON FIRE. He bounces off the furniture, runs between the legs of the chairs and table in the dining room, stops to look out the sliding door, then FRICKING RUNS AROUND LIKE HE'S ON FIRE. It's funny as crap. I wonder if he really is a Bomby?...

When hes ready to pounce, his pupils get HUGE. Absolutely HUGE.

This is Dorian, my fatty. He's the cat I posted about back in December (like anyone remembers).

He doesn't play much, but does enjoy being stupid. Very, very stupid.

My other cat, however, loves scratching at my door and running away when I open it. That game can go on for quite some time.

My cat Kitty absolutely LOVES the game of tag. She used to sneak up behind me and pounce at my ankles before running away. That's her way of asking me to play with her. I'd chase all around the house until i corner her. Then i'd poke her in the ribs and its her turn to catch. However, she catches me faster than i can catch her. This is her pic and i miss her deeply...

This thread reminds me of a cat I used to have (he had to live somewhere else because of my housing, I miss him but from what I hear he's happy with a hippy cat lady). He used to get really playful at night and he had some games he'd show and some he'd hide. One of the ones he'd hide was hilarious, if you quietly sit on the verandah at night you could watch him on the front lawn hunting sticks. He'd stalk them for a while then 'catch' them and throw them in the air and across the yard and chase them all over the place. He'd go for like 20 minutes then I'd crack up laughing, as soon as he realised I was watching he'd shoot me a disapproving look and strut off. On those nights he'd demonstrate he's annoyance at my spying by not sleeping on my bed with me and I knew he was making a point because he'd usually yowl really loud at the window if the lights were out and I hadn't let him in to sleep on my blanket.

I miss that fat little guy. <3

My cats play games too. Our youngest cat (Captian)Morgan will run from one end of the house, jump onto the coffee table in front of our couch, attack any feet/knees he can get to, then bolt off and wait for you to come find him. Thing is, he's a bit of a dumbass and thinks that hiding on top of a TV is a good idea. Even when he does have good spots one of the other cats(usually Jasper) will find him for me, he's like a little hunting cat. But then Morgan will sulk off all sad that Jasper ruined his game, and when you least expect it he's wrapping himself around your ankle like the little bastard he is.

My cat is a fat piece of shit...But I love him for it. He comes up to me to do one of two things -

1) Mew at me untill I get up and top off his dry food bowl. He won't eat unless I pick up his bowl and shake it. He knows where it is, and that it's always got food in it.

2) Sleep RIGHT ON MY FUCKING COAT

when i'm chilling on the computer, my cat will come up to my side, stand up on her hind legs, and will tap me on the shoulder with her paw. but, it's not to play tag, it's to beg me to give her food >:( . She learned how to open the pantry door to get to food, too (it opens by folding in the middle...she learned that if she lays down and sticks her paw in the middle and pulls, the door will open) so now I have to stick a damn stool in front of it to keep it closed.

We used to do the same, we've had generations on generations of cats, and this is what the vets used to recommend to us too. But. We got a new cat about 4 years ago after a decade cat-hiatus, and she just absolutely loved her dry food, she'd eat an entire bowl of it everyday, plus her 2 feedings, and she'd ask for more. She got to be pretty fat (indoor-only cat to boot). Vet then told us that leaving out a bowl of dried food was in fact not the right idea, especially for an indoor cat, and especially one who seemed to like food this much, and to stick to the twice a day little cans of good quality wet food - she should get all the nutrition she needs from that and won't go hungry when you're not there. He specifically stated wet food, apparently dried food is a much higher calorie intake, so much so it's not appropriate for a cat who isn't out and about constantly - let alone free-feeding from a constantly topped up bowl.

She very much misses her beloved dry food, but since we've cut it out she's a much healthier weight now and her bowel movements are generally much better. She gets a little dried food occasionally as a treat, and a very small amount.

It's not necessary to do this for all cats, but if your cat is getting fat and you keep topping up the bowl, it's probably a hint that you need to cut that shit out.
>> Anonymous
>>234172
Sounds more like your vet is pushing wet cat food on you. Nothing wrong with dry cat food if you regulate your cat's feeding time and get the good cat food.
>> tigerfeather !CrwtTbFNxQ
Well, what the vet said IS true, kibble is more calorie-dense than wet food, which is mostly water. If the cat was really fat, then switching to wet food would help curb the hunger and lower the calories.

That being said, I hate feeding wet food and only feed my cats dry. They've learned to not beg for food because they don't get it when they do.

I would have been concerned about that if he were trying specifically to get us to use a particular brand. He has stock of Eukanuba <sp?> in his waiting room, but the full extent of his recommendation was "good quality". Not even a vague hint at a brand suggestion.

Plus, his advice has worked really well and he's been a pretty awesome vet for other concerns we've discussed, so I'm happy.
