God damnit, why is finding a decent pup so hard here near LA. Everyone fucking wants like $700 for their no-breed mutt. Even the shelters and so called rescuers want in on it.

Don't get a pet if you can't afford it?
>> Anonymous
If price is your first worry, you shouldn't get a dog.

wtf should you waste your money on BUYING the dog instead of saving it for potential dog expenses?
>> Anonymous
>>145407

If you can't afford to buy, house, feed, and properly care for an animal, then DON'T GET ONE. You should have sufficient funds for all of those.

Yes, that includes the ridiculously high cost of initially getting one.

Entitlement culture.

Americans (and increasingly other cultures as well) seem to think that they deserve to make money.

Also, dumb pet people who help drive up prices by paying them.
>> Anonymous
You fuckers are retarded. A dog with no lineage shouldn't cost seven hundred dollars.
>> Anonymous
OP is right. Mutts are to be given away, they're not actually worth anything.
>> Anonymous
Surely a dog from a shelter isn't going to cost that much. Adopting a dog from the RSPCA in the UK costs £80, which covers a vet exam so you know what you're getting, all the dog's shots, and a microchip in the neck.

Our local pet shelter sells dogs at $600AU - this is absolute bullshit, of course, considering that the dogs are already old and have very little in terms of life expectency.

Personally, I've never really understood the reason for such high prices. They're just dogs in the end. An animal brought up to be fed on table scraps and barks at strangers.

$600AU? What is that in real money? If it's expensive, it shouldn't surprise you. After all, your country is founded by criminals.

Here in civilized countries adopting a pet generally costs 60-100USD.
>> Anonymous
>>145540

DAMN! I've heard of purebreds going for that much (and more). But $600 (even AU) from a shelter? That's crazy!!

Here in TX, I have never seen a shelter adoption for more than $100, and that INCLUDES a veterinary exam, shots, and spay/neuter.
>> Anonymous
>>145543
>>145545

Civilization/lack thereof aside, the only thing I can concede is that half the dogs that end up there is actually part of a breed rescue program and have not been spayed/neutered. Which may or may not explain the $600. I don't know.

And it's not even a no-kill shelter. "ZOMG POUND NO 22 IS ON DEATH ROW AND IF YOU DON'T BUY US AT HYPERINFLATED PRICES, WE DIE!!!" It's really pathetic.
>> Bitter Anon !!WJLRQ1cwCyZ
>>145550
Er. Why are they not spay/neutering rescued dogs? In the US, all animals that go through gov. run shelters (aka "the pound") MUST be sterilized before they leave again. There may be rare exceptions for exotic species, but they generally go to specialty reserves or require a license. Srsly if any kind of rescue or shelter is not fixing the animals or there is no spay/neuter contract, there is a serious breach of ethics.
>> Anonymous
600 AUD is 500 USD

And most animal shelters here do spay/neuter.

I see.
No wonder AussieAnon was pissed. That's bullshit.

can you just get one at the park? i always see them running around there

Our mutt was a pets mart rescue and cost $300.

The price tag was because he's a half-breed between the Catahoula Leopard Dog and the West Texas Blue Lacy.

Average life expectancy: 15-16 years.
Known common Ailments: None.

Bites harder than a German Shepard but weighs 45-55 lbs and is fast as a grey hound (non racing) and agile as... THRUST VECTORING OWNS THE SKIES.

There was a corgi that just recently was brought into a nearby shelter here, fucking things adoption 'fee' was $350.

What really irks me is when people bring in already spayed/neutered dogs with shots and the shelter still charges that much for them.
>> Bitter Anon !!WJLRQ1cwCyZ
>>145591
..Pretty much, yes.
>> Anonymous
>>145598

It's really awful that shelters require you to pay money to adopt animals in order to help pay for their expenses, such as building rental, utilities, and quality of life and veterinary care for their animals. It's a fucking travesty.

Maybe you could drive to another state? I live in South Carolina where stupid rednecks let their dogs roam the towns without getting them fixed. There are thousands of dogs that need good homes and our shelters usually just charge around $100 to cover costs.

I've heard about the situation in California where everyone is trying to make a quick buck and they are bringing crates of sick dogs over the border from Mexico. I can understand the people who are saying "don't get a pet if you can't afford it" but I don't think that fueling that industry is fair either. It just makes more people want to jump on the bandwagon and start breeding dogs in tiny crates.

>>145625

Oh, helping to pay expenses is fine. I have no problem with that. The problem is when the "adoption fee" becomes crazily high!
>> Anonymous
NOWAI!~

Another person from South Carolina has the Intarwebs? I almost feel not as lonely.
>> Anonymous
>>145625

Well, in my case, $600AU is probably what I will be spending for the dog's feeding and care for an entire year, even if i were feeding it canned food.

>>145560

I'm guessing that they are expecting a registered breeder to pick the dog up.
>> Anonymous
>>145914
Make that three South Carolinians.

S'up?

...Locales aside-- Yeah. I have five dogs, all but the newest fixed. The newest is a rottie mix and just randomly showed up a couple weeks ago wearing a collar, no tags, and looking like death.

So OP should come to our state and just grab a fuckin' dog.
>> Anonymous
South Carolina?? I personally believe that your US american dogs should help other countries like such as and south afreca and the Iraq.

I got my mutt for $35. (Oregon)
She was 4 months old when she was adopted.
I believe she had all her shots and a chip in her neck.
