However, this might work: you're lost in the desert, you have barely enough food and water to survive the walk back to civilization, and for some reason you come accross a starving kitten in the middle of nowhere. You know you need all the food and water you have to survive yourself, and there's nobody else there to come and rescue the kitten. (This still doesn't eliminate the risk to your life, but it doesn't make it nearly as immediate).
