Trying to decide between a dachshund or a beagle. I'm familiar with beagles but not with dachshunds, so a comparison (temperament, etc) would be extremely helpful.

You should kill yourself for considering either of them

Dachshund? Never. Don't even consider it. Never judge a breed by how it looks, you idiot. And don't trust dog books, the whole 'they tend to be a little yappy' is really saying HOLY SHIT THESE FUCKERS HAVE A LOUD AS FUCK BARK AND WILL DO IT ALL DAY. Dachshunds are commonly mis-raised since people think they're little babies, but they're actually litter terrors if not raised properly. Scratch that, even if you raise it properly, its still got a bark loud as hell

go to the grocery store and buy a pack of some good hot dogs and some buns. It'll be a far more satisfying investment and if you really want you can even put one of the dogs on a leash

its official...i HATE beagles. my neighbors have a beagle that for no apparent reason will continously do a combonation of bark howls until it gets tired or bored of barking/howling. beagle is a breed i will NEVER get...or any other hounds. CANNOT stand thier howling sound.

i worked in a to-be unnamed animal testing facility that concentrated on beagles. they take to certain types of training very well.

but they're energetic, noisy, smelly motherfuckers. i will never forget the smell or noise of walking into a 60-beagle kennel at 6:00 in the morning. they got up to 130 db (i measured it) and the smell was enough to make you give up on lunch.

I would go with the Beagle, myself. Just make sure you train him/her to NOT howl constantly.

My sister has a beagle and I want to kill it every time I think about it. Its a fat fuck that just won't stop eating. We feed our dogs at usual times, but it will do everything in its power to sniff everywhere looking for food. I usually wait for her to find food and then scare the hell out of her right before she eats it. lol.
It won't be house trained for some god damn reason either. Though no one has ever hit it yet when it knows its in trouble, it rolls on to its side and start yelping as if she's going feet first into a meat grinder.

The people I live with are retarded.
'this puppy is so cute lets get it without ever researching the breed!'

So.. what you guys are saying is that these are both shitty breeds, and OP should kill himself for considering them, right?

I've come to hate dachshunds.
they are hyper, and relatively stupid dogs.
they like to jump up on things, eat anything they can find, including clothes and shoes, and every one I've ever met likes to piss all over the house.

ITT dog owners that don't know how to train

the real question is how difficult is it to train these breeds.

some dogs are complete nightmares without training, but will be easy to train. likewise, some dogs are naturally laid back and require little training.

for example, a jack russell terrier will be highly energetic and will bark loudly (and even attack) at anything, even a rottweiler. however, jack russells are smart and are relatively easy to train. within a few days you can have an adult fully trained.

beagles are a different story. the ones i've dealt with seemed like they were deaf. it might take days to teach it something simple like "sit", and even then it might not work more than half the time.

whats the wanting the small breeds? get a rottweiler. at least he could actually attempt to protect you from intruders. the other breeds would bark loud and then get field goal kicked.

Dachshunds are good dogs. They've been bred to hunt badgers and are pretty fearless. Like all dogs, dachshunds are born with personalities. Some are easier to train than others, some are more athletic, and some are more affectionate. It just depends. Generally, you can tell a dogs personality from a very young age. I have two miniature dachshunds. One is an affectionate, grumpy jerk, the other is a very peppy, playful and shy dog. For the most part, dachshunds can be very stubborn and defiant if they choose to be. Raising them from pups and training them to know who's boss will produce a very loyal pet. The only drawback of having a pure bred is that they're more likely to have back problems. Otherwise, they're a cute and fun breed of dog.

screw those two breeds, especially the dachshund. loud ass barks, barks randomly at people, owners tend to spoil them, and they can easily get overweight. GET A CORGI! or a golden lab.

Dachshunds are awesome dogs- my first dog is one, and he's absolutely awesome. He's like 11 years old now and is incredibly grey and "old man"-ish, but he's awesome.

Interestingly enough, he's the opposite of feisty- now that he's older, he's essentially co-dependent, and he sleeps under the covers with me, lays on me when I sit down, and basically follows me around the house.

And now I'm in college and he's back home ;_;
