Hey /an/ I'm moving out soon, and I really don't want to leave my cat home. Although it's the only home he's ever known, I am very affectionate to him and he is very clingy to me as a result. He's always following me around the house, and if I sit down, he has to sit in my lap, etc.

My parents don't pay any attention to him, except my mom yells at him all the time and she hates him.

He's also an outdoor cat, and he will whine until my head wants to explode if I don't let him outside.

So is it a bad idea to take him with me to my new home, and if I do, will I have to put up with his horrible whining instead of letting him outside? Would he get lost?

Well obviously your parents don't give a shit about him, so it'd be kinda irrisponsible to leave him with them. I guess your best option is to take him with you and try to help him slowy learn his new turf. Get a kitty harness and walk him around from a week or so until he gets the hang of the place.

Another option is to use the move to confuse him and readjust him to life inside. If you do this, get a second cat so he has a buddy. The more interesting inside is, the less he'll want to go out.

When you move, he'll be freaked out, but you have to keep him indoors for a week, minimum, until he's totally happy in the new house, then let him out. First time you do, make sure he goes out hungry, say an hour before his dinnertime.

Definitely take him with you. It's not a bad idea to try and adjust him to being an inside cat. That's actually what my roommate and I did, and our cat LOVES it. It might be a bit of work getting your cat litter trained, but it would be worth it. Also, with all that whining you say your cat does, make sure he has plently to play with inside. Get some toys with feathers on it (our cat went NUTS over those until we spoiled her too much and she get lazy), a lazer pointer, little toy mice. We even built our cat a huge toy to play on that has carpet and hemp everywhere so she can scratch it up (it was cheaper to build than to buy one, and we could make it bigger and have our own design). I also say if you make him an inside cat, be sure to get a harness until you can trust him to go outside and not get lost. Walk him around the neighbourhood you will be living in, etc. etc.

OP here, thanks for all the help. I'll be taking him with me, and doing the harness idea most likely.
