I was wondering if I could get some ideas for room pets. I've been tossing a few around in my head, but I'd like to get something that you don't see everyday. I've had the classics; hamsters, rats, guinea pigs, etc.

Here's an adorable fellow for your trouble.

rats are the least common imo

what animal is this little guy?
>> Anonymous
Get a couple rats, same gender though.

Crested Gecko. Ridiculously easy to care for, and they're interesting.

It's funny they were thought to be extinct up until the mid 90's, and now every reptile newbie in America has one.

Are they slow? I've always been interested in lizards but I don't want some deceptively not-moving thing up and zip away on me under the fridge or something.

I believe it's an ermine

Get a tarantula, most of them are ridiculously easy to care for.

You are correct. Ermine, but more commonly known as "Stoat".

They always have the most inquisitive/curious expressions..

Seconding tarantula. They're preposterously easy to care for.

if you like reptiles, may i suggest a corn snake or a BP?

I just got my ball python (second one i've had, though its the only one i have now)

Ball pythons are friendly cute and not too hard for a beginner, it was my beginner snake. They get big, but you can keep it in a ten gallon tank for about a year, then you can have it in a sterilite plastic tub that you can put anywhere in your room (i'd put it under my bed).

ermines are epic. just throwing that out there. i have seen rats kinda commonly, i think ferrets or chinchilla's are pretty awesome pets. ferrets at least are reasonably intelligent. chinchillas can run laps on the walls of their cages though >:D

I second chinchilla. They are pretty clean. They take dust baths. Their dropping and urine don't stink as much as other rodents. They are pretty awesome when raised from a young age. My mom had one for years. He would roam the house and only use his cage when he wanted to eat and sleep. He was a friendly fucker who loved to chew on wires and sit on the couch.

I'd suggest getting a Stomatopod (mantis shrimp) if you want a uncommon and interesting pet. And if you aren't opposed to keeping an aquarium. Very easy to care for and pretty cheap to set up and maintain.

The peacock mantis comes in amazing color variations and devour pretty much everything, they are able to smash open crabs. Always a conversation piece and since they swim, no chance of having a creepy crawler escape-OMG-ITS-IN-MY-HAIR moment..

Mantis Shrimp are creepy, they remind me of tyranids

Except Tyranids ROCKED.

Along those lines: Hermit crab. Very hard to kill, very easily pleased, and everyone goes apesh*t over it. You do have to put a variety of shells in its cage so it can switch between them as it grows.

Be careful because a mantis shrimp claw can shatter a glass aquarium. You have to get a plexiglass one for a mantis shrimp. Also be prepared for loud sorta snapping sounds as it's claw creates a sonic boom in the water.

You're probably thinking of the Pistol Shrimp that makes the "sonic boom", those fuckers are really loud.

yeah, but he looks much more like a stoat than a mongoose

Hermit crabs are easy as fuck to kill. Just forget to put on the lid or forget to give them water. They'll dessicate and die in a couple days. They'll die within a year or two anyway when they don't shift shells or the stress of captivity gets to them.

Hermits are fucking hard as fuck to take care of unless you live in the Bahamas or something.
>> Anonymous
I remember reading somewhere that no one has ever bred hermits in captivity successfully. Many of mine died, and were really gross in general.

Many saltwater aquarists keep stomatopods in captivity. These aquarists may play a role in understanding the mysteries of the mantis shrimp. However, mantis shrimp are considered pests by other hobbyists because they can be transported unwittingly in a load of rocks destined for an aquarium. Once inside the tank, they may feed on fish, corals, and smaller crustaceans. They are notoriously difficult to catch when established in a well-stocked tank [11] and have been known to destroy aquariums by cracking the glass[12].

Pistol shrimp make a similar sound but do not break glass.

they also have to molt every once and awhile, and when they do that its like a fifty fifty chance theyll die. you can go to check on them and not know they're molting until you do and then bang, now they're probably going to die cause you disturbed them. on the other hand, if you get one that outlives its fellows, its a pretty safe bet its going to last awhile. ive had a hermit crab for 5 years now, its the only one out of about ten that survived.

Don't get a Chinchilla on a whim...my roommate had one that his girlfriend bought on impulse and couldn't keep at her place (stupid bitch). He was skittish, and no matter what I did, would not love me back. :(

He would pose with a waffle though.
