Hi /b/ I have a large Maine Coon Cat named Gizmo. He's a wonderful cat most of the time, but he has these sneezing fits which some people believe is the onset of kitty leukemia. I took him to the vet on numerous occasions for it as it seems to come and go with my own allergies, however they best they can do is "CLEAN YOUR VENTS LAWL". Dumb shits. I don't have vents. Old house is old.

Anyhow, I was thinking a dehumidifier until it cools down more or maybe something to clean the air of dust and shit, yea?

Pic very related. Mo Mo has amazings and 18 lbs.

Dehumidifier is a bad idea.

Something to clean the air is a good idea, not only for your cat, but for you.
There are things that clean and lightly humidify the air at the same time, they are pretty good.
Just don't fall for that ionization or un-ionization shit.

Vacuum cleaning your house more often is a good idea as well.

Ionic cleaners work fine. They are, however, overpriced. Don't fall for the crap and buy a sharper image one. You can get generics for far less money.

Replace the filters on your A/C or furnace more frequently, and use high quality filters. Also, set it to run the fan even if it isn't actively heating or cooling, that will continually filter your air.

Premium furnance filters can actually save you money in some circumstances. Most of them have a very high surface area, which is good for filtering. But, it also reduces the pressure drop across the filter, which means your fan doesn't have to work as hard to circulate the air. You spend more on the filter, but you save it on electricity.

Also, while the Ionic cleaners DO work--you can clearly see the crap they pull out of the air--the so-called "ozone air purifiers" do NOT. Ozone is a component of smog, and it is toxic. Furthermore, studies have shown that they don't even work at eliminating odors or airborne particles. Don't waste your money on that crap.

I have had 2 periods of SEVERE allergic sneezing in my life. The first cause turned out to be the top foam layer in my mattress had disintegrated into a fine dust. The second turned out to be a pillow that had never been washed and, apparently, reached bacteria "critical mass". Each time took me over a year of trying air filters, opening all the windows, washing everything, vacuuming daily, buying more powerful vacs, etc. Some of that helped, especially bringing in lots of fresh air, but eliminating the source of allergens was the only real solution. If it happens to me again, I'll start with the textile objects I'm nearest for long periods, like my bed and chair.

You could get rid of your carpets.

I meant it took me a year to figure out what the source of the problem was. There was no odor or obvious clue. I just had to move objects around the house until one made a difference, and like other posters in this thread I started with the AC vents and the floor rather than small items like one pillow.

Cats can get allergies too, if it's seasonal it's probably something outside.
If you or your cat sneezes mostly when inside, it's probably mold or some other indoor allergy. I'm highly allergic to mold, but not allergic to grass pollen and stuff like that. I sneeze constantly when I'm in a moldy building, if I go outside it's gone in 5 minutes.

I'm not trying to be rude here, but it seems like the REAL problem was that you weren't keeping things clean.

Surely if you had been regularly washing your be bedding you would have seen (or otherwise noticed) that the top of your mattress was disentigrating, and that your pillow was nasty.

It was the FOAM, which is INSIDE the top. There was no visible clue, and one does not normally launder a mattress, but rather the pad. Which I did weekly.
As for the pillow, it didn't stink or look discolored, and I ignored it because I think laundering pillows puts wear and tear on my washing machine, and because they're all wrapped up in 2 cases. And I'm telling you all this so you know it can happen even if you keep things clean.
