The arms weren't useless, though. They may have been short, but they were insanely well muscled, and some estimates have each individual arm able to hold between 500 and 1,000 pounds.
Given how far back they're positioned, it's highly unlikely that T.rex used its arms to hold prey while the head dealt damage, so current consensus has it that the arms may have been used in mating, allowing the male better grip on the female (like the claspers on male great whites).
