Pet Rocks Anonymous
I'm thinking of getting one. I'm trying to decide between sandstone, or granite. Also, does the temperment differ between the ones bought at the store and those in the wild?
>> Anonymous

I had a pet rock that I found huddled by himself near a river. He was about the size of my open hand and smooth all the way around. I took him home and for years, he liked to sit and lean against my door. I adopted another one from the "Brick" breed. I found her at an old Louisiana plantation home. She used to be with the rest of her kind in the slave-houses in the far back of the property. Since nobody was there and I thought it'd be cool to have a little piece of history, I took her home.

They don't seem to get along very well... anybody have any idea as to why a river rock and brick wouldn't get along?
>> Anonymous
>>333095
Is he torturing that rock?
>> Anonymous

I find bricks can be quite rough in their play and are usually better in colonies or among other bricks. I would suggest getting your brick a friend or two, and maybe he'll relax more with the river rock.

For feeding your pet rock you need to roll it in dirt for about 50 seconds, It only needs fed once a week, and after you feed it is when you bathe it.

Pet rocks are guaranteed to never need trips to the vet, expensive diets, litter box training, or a fenced-in yard. You can make yours a special house if you want to, or you can just keep it in your pocket or on your desk to admire. Warning: young sedimentary rocks, such as sandstone and conglomerates, may shed. Consider adopting a more mature rock.

Wild pet rocks usually have more personality than store-bought rocks, but they can also have diseases that store-bought rocks are vaccinated against. I'd talk to your vet about the cost of getting vaccinations.

Feed them some loam, sand and clay. If mother soil doesn't come back for them, get a small plant pot for them to sleep in.
Make sure you handle them carefully; like all members of the dirt family they are susceptible to suffer death if stepped on/thrown/squeezed.
>> Anonymous
>>333944
Well, just be very careful if you're planning to take them in and you have a pet rock. Dirt clods are very fragile and shy, and a rock that is even mildly aggressive could hurt them badly, especially if the dirt clods are only pups. I recommend 'socializing' your rock with the dirt clods by setting them in adjacent containers for a few days, under your supervision. If they seem to be getting along, there is potential for them to actually become friends...I've even heard some cases of adult rocks nursing orphaned dirt clods!
>> Anonymous
>>333944
Also, keep your dirt clods away from ants. They may want to make hills out of them :(

SHOE ROCK!
>> Anonymous
I found my pet rock about a decade or so ago. The lil guy was in my backyard, looking frightened and out of place. At first, I was unsure of how to approach him- he was about the shape of an alligator's head and longer than the size of my hand (I was about 12-13 at the time).

At first, I observed him from across the yard, wondering if he was feral. My cats kept their distance from him, which lead me to believe this. The longer I stared at him, the lonelier he looked, and finally, I approached him, taking my time to prove that I was harmless to him. When I touched him, his coldness bit into me, and I nearly dropped him out of shock, but I held him tight and brought him inside to warm him up.

It took some time, but the frightened rock soon warmed up to me, and we became good friends. He liked to cuddle next to me when I slept to keep warm, and watch television with me. As I grew older, he mostly remained on my dresser, watching me type away on my computer, but he didn't mind. He was already so old, and he didn't care for moving around too much. By the time I was going to move away from home, he had become so fragile that I was worried that the move might shock him too much. It was a difficult decision, but I decided to leave him at my parents' house.

I miss him so much now...

Proper socialization from an early age is a must, as are responsible breeders. I foolishly bought my first rock from a store. It had seriously behavioral problems. One day, it inexplicably flew from my hands into the back of a classmate's head. After that, it had to be put down. I was so sad.

What are your guys' thoughts on gravel? I've been thinking of getting some.
>> Anonymous
>>338679
That much gravel can be a huge investment of time and money, I think you really need to sit down and think about whether or not you have the time, money, patience, and energy to give gravel the attention and care that it really needs. Go down to your local quarry and talk to the guys there, ask them questions, see what they suggest, you might find a nice peice of granite that you like even more than you think you like gravel.

Remember, gravel is a working rock, it is not content to just sit in a pile and do nothing, it likes to get out and work on the road, play in the driveway, mix up some cement...oh and always watch your shoes around gravel, it loves to get in your shoes and hurt your feet but don't punish it, that is just it's nature, just like most rocks it also like to play a little rough sometimes too so don't get it riled up too much or you can scrape your elbows and knees up pretty badly.
>> Anonymous
Guys... I accidentally stepped on a dirt clod...
>> Anonymous
>>338733

Oh, fuck, is it still alive? Is it domestic or wild? Either way you need to take it to the vet. Now. Dirt clods hide their injuries; you think they're fine and have no idea that they're ill until they drop dead on you. If you don't have any money try taking it to a shelter and seeing if they take charity work; or you could suck up to the vet see if they will treat it on some sort of payment plan. If it's wild you can see if you can get in contact with a certified wild dirt clod carer, they will take in and rehabilitate injured or sick clods. No matter what you do, just do something. Don't just leave it to die, for fuck's sake.

I've had Massimo for ten years now. I remember when we first met, a chilly November morning on the outskirts of El Paso. It was just past three am and I had been driving for seven hours when I had stopped off at one of the many "sight seeing" ledges throughout the mountain. My car was being pushed around by the strong winds, and I had to take shelter until my uncle in his truck could help me down. In the dark, I recall my boot bumping against something, and I flipped my little light on to see what it was. And lo, there he was, spectacularly placed against the natural sandy red rocks; round, sleek, dark, clearly a foreigner to Texas, much like myself. Despite all I had heard about wild and feral rocks, I offered him a home. With me. He was cautious at first, but soon warmed up, and we were inseparable. He was even tolerant and very well behaved when I discovered I was pregnant and subsequently introduced him to my child when the time came.

For the longest time though, we were all under the assumption that jolly ol' Massimo (the largest, of course) was a boy. But I woke up one day to find.. well, you see! I can only assume she is a vast mixture. Or her suitors were.

Alas, in our last move, she was wounded. I don't suspect she had long to live now.. But the memories will stay with me forever.

I found this masterpiece under some rocks near a river. Knowing that in time the river would reach it and sweep it away, I decided to take it along with me.

It grew into me rather quickly, and we had lots of fun. I would take it to school, the park, and occasionally therapy.

Then came the day when I placed it on a shelf where it could observe the room while I heeded the call of nature. Either it was too awesome for the shelf, or the nails weren't tight enough, but... the shelf broke and the poor thing slid off onto the floor, breaking into many pieces. When I returned, I was shocked and horrified at what gravity had made of the beauty...

After mourning for several hours, I decided what to do. Despite being broken, it was not dead yet. I gathered what shards I could and took them back to the river where it lived. Here, they would start growing again, each becoming an equally magnificent crystalline formation and maybe merge at some time to become an even bigger entity.

Carefully I covered them in the soil of the river's edge, and bid them farewell before departing. Even though we had known each other for only a week, I knew we would be friends forever...

They allow themselves to be trained to fighting form, and willingly risk their lives for their country. And then, our government more often than not simply leaves them behind, wounded and dead service rocks litter the world with noone to care for them or comfort them as they grow old. There is a horrible epidemic of veteran rocks like these living homeless, like wild animals... won't you consider taking one in? They've done so much for us, given so selflessly.
