Berner Sennen dogs Anonymous
Hey /an/

my cousins wife asked me last night if i was interested in taking over ownership of an 8 month old Berner Sennen.

Im looking for people with experience with these types of dogs what to and what not tos etc,
im used to dogs, ive had dogs all throughout my life etc so i guess i could call myself "experienced".

However this will be the very first dog ive owned myself,

ive been looking at wikipedia and various other sites about the dogs but there was hardly anything worth mentioning.

any help/tips will be VERY appreciated.

They get hueg like x-bawks.
They're an hardy breed from the Alps, they were/are used as rescue dogs there.

I've never had one but I've known some and they were all very good dogs. Very sweet, very furry, quite smart. They are big dogs, though, and need good solid training. I've never heard anyone say they were particularly hard to train, though.

They were used in their native country as cart dogs and for general watchdog work around the farm, so they would probably enjoy some kind of work to do. I know some people who have the larger Grosser Sennens and they have trained them to pull carts in parades and things, and they enter pulling contests, too. The dogs seem to love it.

Why is she getting rid of it?

Not to be a party pooper but Berner Sennen are known to have a lot of shitty ones personality-wise among their genepool . Not saying all are, most are just sweet, gentle dogs but I also know a lot of vicious Berner Sennen. Just be careful is all.

Why don't you just love and care for him/her like any other dog? The resulting outcome would be a happy dog.
