Do you think it's safe? Anonymous
This is Merlin/Mervin/Marvin/Fatty my feline friend. My wife and I live in an apt on the second story, and our bedroom window has no screen, but a large window sill that my cat has recently discovered is large enough for him to lay in.
Has /an/ ever had a cat leap from a second story window? I love leaving my window open when the weather's cool, but now I'm afraid he'll bail on me.
They don't make screens for this window, I've asked the apartment manager about it. Should I just keep my window closed? He seems to love looking down at all the people on the sidewalk. What do you guys suggest?

Leave it open a crack, just be careful since cats can fit through tight spaces.

Curiosity will get the better of him and he will get out if you leave it all the way open. i.e. distracting bird outside window, etc

I'd recommend keeping your window closed. Even if he doesn't have suicidal kitty thoughts. He can still fall out of the window, especially if he decides to take a nap on the window ledge.

I caught him today doing that very thing. I don't want to deny him his simple pleasures, so I'm trying to find a compromise that might keep him safe. I thought of getting some fencing from home depot and building a guard rail around the ledge or something.

That'd be a really sweet thing to do!

Until you do it, though, keep him from the ledge. Cats can and do fall from perches, especially if they're sleeping and roll over.

I don't want your buddy to get hurt.

My cat leaps from our second-story window. Obviously he fucked up his foot/leg by doing this so often, and now we're faced with either closing the door of that room while he's roaming, or closing the window.
I really don't know what possesses a cat to think this is a good idea; but the fencing idea would be a definite plus. Just don't be careless and leave it open on the off chance he decides to leap out, then you're stuck with vet bills up the ass.

ah ha! I went out to walmart and got some of that fencing that goes around gardens and built a marvelous little rail for him. Problem solved! I'd post pictures but its dark here now... I'm such a handy-man... but in retrospect it probably would have been easier just to make a custom screen... SIGH

my ten yr old cat escaped out of a second story window. still dunno how he got out except it was left an inch open. don't think that if it doesn't escape after propping it open for just a few days it won't ever. it was the scarriest two days of my life when he had gotten out.... try getting some screen fabric and asking if your manager will let you staple gun it around the outside of your window
