They don't shed much, don't have that "doggy" smell and are fiercely loyal. They make excellent guard dogs too, just barking a few times when strangers are around.
On the downside, the coat needs a bit of care (brushing, washing and trimming) and they can get mucky beards after eating. They are also a bit hard to train as you mentioned and can be bad around small kids as they won't tolerate being poked and prodded.
Otherwise, great little dogs.
