I've had two rat males, and before them, three gerbils, which I think go into the same category with mice. I'd go for rats, since they aren't as vulnerable, you don't need to watch for them all the time for things like falling and dying of it.
They're smart and can even do things like agility. You can go out with them and they won't go far from you. They will give you everything they have.
Mice, in contrary, don't care of humans, bite more often, run away if you put them on the yard and never come back (alive), are very weak and vulnerable, annoyingly fast and small, bite on things like cables, try their everything to get away from you.
Many people turn away from rats because "they have that tail EEK", but it's really just stupid, because rats make perfect pets. (hint of the day: rat males are less aggressive towards other rats and their pee won't stink like female rats' pee does.)
Seems like the topic people prefer rats>mice.
