Soup /an/, I have something to ask. Why does it hurt me so bad when I see an animal in pain? It makes this rage build up inside me, which is magnified 10fold if the pain is caused by humans. I've grown up living with dogs and cats, they've helped me get through the worst times of my life. By just sitting near them and giving them a long cuddle, all my pain goes away. I can't figure it out. If I see a human in pain, I don't even look twice. Is it because animals can't speak for themselves? I don't know, lawdy lawdy. :(

You're a goddamn hippy.

You're a furry.

The same goes for me. I bought a dog a couple of months ago to help get over my depression. I've never been so happy... she's like my daughter.

It might be because they are defenseless and can't really do many things that are "wrong".

But that's just my take on it.
>> Anonymous
I think it's because they are completely innocent and loyal (generally).

Like if you shot your dog in the leg, he would most likely link the pain with something bad HE must have done to you that made you angry, instead of being all WTF YOU SHOT ME I'M GOING TO MAUL YOUR FACE.

Wow that's a bad example. Maybe it's because you are a hippie and a furry.

Reminds me of a poster that was here a while ago saying that he/she had a choice of hitting a cat or a child with her car, she'd choose to hit the child to save the cat.

I don't know, possibly because they're innocent and usually loyal. Maybe it's because they can't speak for themselves, or because they're defenseless.

But I feel the same way. I hate seeing animals in pain or fear. I want to fucking rip apart the people that are cruel to animals, limb from limb. They deserve it. It makes me mad that someone can kill a dog and be fined $500, but if they kill a human child, they get the death sentence or life in prison. It's still murder, either way.

That isn't to say I don't pity helpless humans, though. I hate it when a child is being picked on or abused. And I have a lot of respect to people who go out of their way to save animals, too. For example, earlier this morning I was driving and three lanes of cars had stopped because there was a puppy who'd ambled into the road. She looked really scared and she was basically frozen there. It made me smile when one of the drivers got out of his car and coaxed the hesitant puppy patiently into his arms and took her into his car, rather than shooing the little dog off. That made my day.

So, I can't really say why, OP, but you're not alone.

I think that's a bit extreme. I love animals and weep shameless girly tears whenever I see roadkill, but if it comes down to it, I'd rather kill an animal than a human child.
>> Anonymous
It's because they're innocent.

If a human gets hurt, you can tell yourself they were an evil person in some way. But animals can't be evil.

Except raptors.
>> stabby
Lots of people feel this way. I'd say it's largly due to the fact that society lables (some) animals as "innocent", "loyal", etc.

I don't like to think of animals as the embodiment of innocence (they really aren't, they're just fuckin' animals) but I do respect them and feel they should be treated humanely...including the tasty ones.

Animals are innocent, by comparison to humans.

Still, a lack of regard for human pain is pretty bad.

Probably just innate maternal/pateral instinct. I'm guessing the emotion tends to be stronger when it comes to animals like cats and dogs, which are bred and raised to be dependent on human beings, and baby mammalians than it does for pigeons, fish, etc.

On a semi-related note, bottlenose dolphins are one of the few species known to kill for fun. In the wild they're also known for raping other dolphins, even males of other species, to death.

I don't see what's so wrong about having a lack of regard for human suffering. Humans bring it upon themselves, humans cause more suffering because they suffer and apparently humans enjoy suffering. I might have a twinge of conscience if I had to choose between putting a bullet in the head of some kid and an animal but the kid would get the bullet every fucking time.
Spay and neuter your pets to control the animal population folks!

I'm not for animal rights, but I'm all for animal welfare - people who abuse animals for their own sadistic pleasure* need to have their brains beaten out with a baseball bat, because people like that are psychopaths/sociopaths who are dangerous to humans as well.

*(as opposed to animal testing of medicines/surgical techniques, which provides measurable benefits for everyone)

You two ought to have been here when some retarded bitch threw a baby mouse into an emperor scorpion's cage (btw, emperor scorpions do not eat mice) to be torn alive, including lovely sound effects of her cousins giggling and laughing at the mouse screaming in pain. Then posted it on Youtube saying "isn't it so cool?".

And then had the audacity to say that it was for the sake of "nutrition" (the scorpion didn't eat it), and that it was normal (the scorpion didn't even kill it in the end).

Pretty much my view. Anyone who finds pleasure in causing pain needs to be arrested before they kill someone.

I still value human life over that of an animal. Except for maybe dolphins (damn soft spot for Sea World...).

If I see serious animal cruelty like the infamous puppy thrower, I always like to kill the offender. In the same way he killed his victim. I can't stand it what people can do to innocent animals. It's the same abusion of power like in war crimes. The laws agains animal cruelty are a joke!

But to all the people who say: "OHHH, it's only about the cuddly ones like dogs and cats!" --> FUCK YOU! It's at least a start! Look how pets were treated in the Dark Ages!

The "I would kill a child before an animal" viewpoint is way too extreme - much too close to those radicalist PETA fags. Some animals are capable of making the wrong choices when they know it's unacceptable, and there are many children who learn empathy at an early age who could also be considered "innocent."

I've been studying the differences between animal and human empathy for a while - I find it interesting that we respond to baby apes similarly as we do to human children, but we admire adult apes for their intelligence and strength instead of cuteness. But other mammals get a different reaction, so even an adult dog can illicit the same "awwww" response as a puppy.

As much shit as we give society for raising people to be jackasses, empathy for living things is one thing that we can thank things like the national media for encouraging - for example, when they revealed the dog fur trade, they introduced it as grisly and horrible, and whenever there is a "cute story" about kittens nursing puppies, you're sure to find it on some local news channel somewhere. So empathy, nurturing instincts, hormones, and society are all responsible.

I'd rather not kill anything if I had to. If it did come down to it, I guess I might choose a human too, but that's an over simplification. You have obligations, starting with those close to you and moving out. In my opinion this includes animals. This is why though I resent hunger and all the other crap that happens in the world, I would take care of my pets (and indeed people in my community) before I say went and did service work on the other side of the world.

Altruism for our own species is good, but thinking that we're all that's important in the world is thinking like a virus.

Animals (in most cases) cannot defend themselves. Many people think that animals are merely objects, that they don't have feelings or deserve to be treated humanely. How anyone can enjoy an animal suffering is beyond me... and as someone said before, that kind of person should be locked up anyways, because they are a hazard to humans as well.
I have a soft spot for cats and dogs, because they are companion animals. The thought of someone hurting a loving, nurturing animal makes me completely sick. The fact that theres nothing I can do about it makes me feel even worse =(
