Hey /an/,

I have 10 chickens right now. We got them as chicks around 3 or 4 months ago, so they're still pretty young. They live in an enclosed area attached to their chicken coop, because we have predators in the area. It is enclosed with 2 types of black netting, one with large holes and the other with tiny holes. Anyways, sometimes they escape, but when they do, they stick really close, so they can stay near the other chickens still inside the netted area.

3 days ago, one chicken got out and disappeared for most of the day. We thought she got taken by another predator (probably raccoon) but she returned later that night. However, she had a limp in her left leg, and she could barely walk on it. Now come today, she won't even walk on it. She just lays on the ground. If I pick her up, she stands on her right leg and just balances there. I know her left leg is injured, but there is no blood/wounds, and I'm not sure how to tell if it is broken. I know it is injured though.

What do I do? Will it heal on its own? should I bring her inside? Does she need to be taken to a vet?

tl;dr, Chicken won't walk on its left leg because of pain, what do I do?

Thanks!

Pic is the same breed of chicken, but not mine. I can't find my transfer cable.

have you checked the bottom of her foot?

if she'll let you, gently run your finger up ad down her left leg and see if she reacts at any point.. that could tell you if a specific part is hurt or if it's just the whole leg. i'd try to take her to the vet if it lasts much longer, though

Why would you eat a chicken? Chicken is disgusting. Eat a cow.

Do you know what breed she is? She looks like a cross of a heavy breed. They're prone to structural injuries because of their speedy growth.
I had a Rhode Island that started out with a limp, went dead lame, found her unconscious and thought her dead. Took her out of her box, she convulsed in front of me and died. Still have no clue what the hell happened. Been a year and everyone else is fine.
As for her disappearance, considering the time of year, she could be nesting somewhere. Our 'wild' chickens often disappear for days, only appearing at breakfast and gone for the rest of the day.
As for internal injuries, it can sometimes be hard to tell with the hard scales. Our rooster was attacked, mangled his leg bones bad. But no external injuries. Our vets suck so we home healed him. He does fine with one leg.
