Bruton Gaster
I had a similar situation a few months back. We have a little Jack Russel that had gotten up to an obese 42 pounds. Pretty big for such a short dog. We were pretty much feeding her table scraps. All kinds of greasy foods.
She started vomiting non-stop over a course of several days, and a trip to the vet discovered a case of acute pancreatitis. She was lucky to survive, but she did pull through. After that, the vet had us put her on a very strict diet. The food we had to get for her was pretty expensive, about $40 for a 2-3 week supply. But it did the trick, and so far she's lost about 10-15 pounds.
I'm sure there are other cheaper diet foods out there if you don't want to spend that much.
Like>>213055said, you might want to try catnip. I had a very grumpy cat a few years ago- liked to sit in corners and would completely ignore you if you tried playing with him or something. But a little catnip would completely change his attitude.
