Rat Anonymous
Allright so I have decided I want a pet white rat, only problem is, I live in Alberta, Canada. So they are illegal here(thus not sold), the best idea I can seem to come up with is when my buddy from Saskatoon comes to visit, get him to pick me up one from a store and bring it to me.

Any other suggestions of how to aquire one in Alberta?

Most snakes are fed f/t mice and rats, rats are legal as long as they are dead.

that's sad that rats arn't allowed. :( I don't have any advice for you other then getting two rats, they are social. Do your research about rats!
Decide if you want boys or girls and how well you can house them and so on. Research research research.

If you're caught you will be fined something like $5000 per rat and go to jail for 60 days I think.

Yeah I would be looking at two females, mostly to cut down on any odor and breeding.

It wouldnt be too hard to purchase a two or three tier cage, which would be good for two.

Yeah thats not even close to what the actual penalty would be. F&W is pretty lenient in Alberta, the first time they would most likely confiscate the rats(you may get a small fine if it is male and female.. Plus it would depend on the species of Rat, the genus Rattus is illegal, but something like Praomys natalensis(Natal Rat) is perfectly legal, you just have to make sure the common name is nowhere on there to make sure they dont accidentaly stop it.

Having a Burmese Python(illegal in Alberta) would cost you about $5000 in fines, but probably little to no jail time.

"Under Alberta's Agricultural Pest Act, anyone found to be raising or harbouring rats could face a maximum $5,000 fine or 60 days in jail."

Obviously it depends on the case, but lenient is a very relative term and they are very strict.
