It depends on what kind of turtles you want to get. Red-eared sliders (the little aquatic ones sold in most pet stores) have very different requirements from a box turtle or tortoise. I'm assuming you want sliders (see pic)...
Sliders require lots and lots of space, and they can get up to dinner-plate size. They eat turtle pellets and worms. A good aquarium filter will help keep the water clean. They also need a place to get out of the water and bask, and they need heat lamps that emit UVA/UVB rays. Generally turtles do not mind other turtles (unless it's a snapping turtle, lol), and some species like sliders have even been seen to bask in groups, indicating that they are somewhat social. Some sliders are a little snappy, and they can give you quite a pinch if they bite your finger.
