So we are down to two kittens now. Looks like two boys, kittens 1 and 2. Three was humanely killed a little while ago. She was extremely dehydrated, and all my attempts to get her to eat were in vain. She wouldn't nurse, didn't attempt to cry out or anything. And she smelled horrible, I thought at first it was the nest, like maybe snailkitten wasn't keeping it clean, but when separated, I realized it was just Escargot, kitten 3. For lack of a better word, she smelled like death, like a rotting corpse, despite her kneading her paws and nuzzling into my hand. I called 16 diferent vet agencies, and the local zoo and wildlife rehab center, to try and figure out something to do. Everyone said that if she smelled that way, she was going to die, and the most they could do is give her fluid injections, but even then most places said "She's just a few days old, kittens that age die like that all the time"

It still hurts. If you have the chance, get your pet spayed or neutered, because it's just not worth ever having to kill a kitten that you spent the last twelve hours trying to save. I don't know if I can sleep tonight, I keep hearing her gasping and seeing her tiny little feet kneading my hand.

This makes me really sad...

I was taking care of a 2 week old baby kitty(mom & others where dead...they weren't my cats) and she died in my hands...

That sucks. I'm so sorry, Bitter Anon.

I'm so sorry Bitter, I know how much it hurts. At least you did your best, and didn't let her suffer. All my best wishes to you.

R.I.P. Escargot

This was even harder than when my elderly rats died. I had two (one 3yrs and one 5+ yrs) die on the same day, they were both sickly and I was holding them, and the girl just curled up, licked my hand, and passed away. It would have been easier if the kitten had not been trying to hard to live. I absolutely hate seeing something young die.. an old cat dying is easier, because you have all these great memories and they've lived a good life. But with a baby.. you just think of all the things that could have been, and they never really got a chance >:(

at least snailkitten doesn't seem to miss her

I really hate to hear that, it's awful.

You're doing it wrong.

Seriously, if you don't know the story, you must not have visited /an/ at all within the last two months.

I think I missed it... Where is the last SnailKitten topic? ;_;

I never read cat threads. Yeah, good question why I noticed this one now...

/cry for Escargot. That is so sad.

Oh. I see. You saw the words "pregnant cat" and immediately made assumptions and started to cry over what a horrible, irresponsible person Bitter is, and how oh my God there are sooooo many unwanted cats in this world. Why bother pretending like you give a shit now when you didn't even care enough then to READ ONE FUCKING POST? STFU and GTFO. Go to peta2.org with all of the other narrow-minded, lazy fucks.

I'm so sorry, Bitter Anon, I feel your pain. =( I've done kitten rescue work before, and it's hard to bear the loss of a baby. At least you were willing to understand that there wasn't anything you could do, and had her humanely put down instead of letting her wither away on her own. I applaud you for that.

~sheds a tear for Escargot~

It's always hard, but watching the little ones who do survive catch on like a blaze and thrive is also the best thing to see.

happened to me too. Owned a kitten that had feline luekimia. She slept on me. I woke up one day to find her dead.

what do you think its last thoughts were?

you probably slept on it...

better to die a baby. Losing a kitten or puppy aint so bad (atleast for a few days after they are born), and is pretty common.

After they are older, and have more of a personality. . .

"Oh, what's this thing rushing up at me? I think I'll call it the ground. I wonder if it wants to be friends. . . "

I disagree. Something more along the lines of
"I'm so lucky to have master...
...master is so nice to me...
...master is so warm...
...but why do I feel cold...
...master, are you there?...
...master, I can't open my eyes...
...I can't hear you breathing...
...I'm having trouble getting up...
...master, where am I going?...
...master, I'm scared...

Not read "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" eh?

That's the last thought of a whale that materialized when the Heart of Gold used it's Infinite Improbability Drive. The book documents all the whales thoughts as it plummets to the ground with expectable results.

I'm so very sorry to hear your story. I'm adopting two kittens today and they will most certainly be "fixed".

You tried hard and did the right thing, all the way around.

this makes me sad to hear. I am sorry to hear about Escargot. :(

Thanks for all your sympathies folks. We still have two great big kittens, I was drunk and moping and looking at pictures of snailkitten when I first brought her home, and they are almost as big. At three fucking days old!

Snailkitten is handling things fine. I think she knows there is a kitten missing, because every time I go near the nest she nudges my shirt (I kept the baby in a kinda pouch made with an old shirt to keep it warm), and looks expectant. Other than that, she doesn't seem upset or anything. Good for her, I mean, she dumped the kitten out of the nest repeatedly and refused to nurse. If only I'd figured it out sooner and not made her suffer.. bleh. Escargot will be buried this afternoon. I have way too many dead animals under my yard. You might think that means I'm a bad owner, but I think it means I've had too many pets.

Anyway, thanks, and sorry for making a happy board go sad.

Think the snailkitten saga is worth a wikichan page? People keep asking the story, and I even got email in my normal email asking about her (never posted on here that I know of. fucking internet detectives!)

Update: It's been raining too much to bury the kitten, and honestly, I have a hard time parting with loved ones. I kinda want to practice my taxidermy or tan her hide or something, but I think it'd be creepy for everyone else.

The other two are big loud bossy boys. 1 screams all the time, and 2 is the cuddliest thing ever. I'm going to have a hard time parting with him. When I reach into the nest box, I say "Hey guys, what's going on", and immediately 2 wriggles towards my hand (He can't see, but he can smell my skin and hear my voice). 1 screams for his mother, and if snailkitten is in there, she licks him and purrs and ignores me. They both climb all over their mum, and she's started "playing" with them: rolling away, letting them scramble over her to get her milk, and if they get on her head she bites at them, etc.

Camera batteries are charging like lazors, and I'll post pics (and maybe video) later.
