Good raccoon pics? Anonymous
I found this on /b/ maybe a week ago.
I was wondering if anyone else has more cute raccoon pics. I figured /an/ was the best place to ask.
There's no raccoons where I live so I don't know how much of a nuisance they are.

Well, okay. They are legal, but only with an exotic pet permit. You have to show that you have enough knowledge of them as a species before you get one. You also have to keep them in a pen. (Well, you have to have a decent pen, you don't really need to keep them in it, but it's a really bad idea to keep a raccoon in the house anyway.)

More stuff from Wikipedia that might be important to know:

"Many raccoons which have reached their sexual maturity will show aggressive natural behaviors like biting during mating season. Neutering them at around five or six months of age decreases the chance of this happening. They can develop obesity and other disorders due to unnatural diet, like feeding cat food over a long time period, and lack of exercise. They may also grow lonely if not having contact to conspecifics. Due to its inborn curiosity, a raccoon will most likely wreak havoc in the household. Often, it is already required by law to keep them in a pen. Captive raccoons can be trained to be active during the day and sleep at night, but usually it's impossible to teach raccoons to obey commands."

They're a massive nuisance.

Raccoons would make awesome pets, if it wasn't for all the diseases they can carry.

But seriously they are unbelievably smart, and that lends to their incredibly annoying and or destructive behavior. They are major pests and factoring in the diseases they can even be threat. Be glad you don't have to deal with these cute, disease-ridden, little vandals.

Very few studies, most build upon their sensory perception, have been done to determine the mental abilities of raccoons. In 1908, ethologist H. B. Davis compared their learning speed with those of Rhesus Macaques after they opened eleven of 13 complex locks in less than ten tries. Studies in 1963, 1973, 1975 and 1992 concentrated on their memory and showed that raccoons remember the solution to once learned tasks up to three years later. Stanislas Dehaene reports in his book The number sense that raccoons can distinguish boxes containing two or four grapes from those containing three.

once these things have opposable thumbs we are fucked.

>>275105

Seconded. You have to fasten your trash or they'll tear it to shreds. Sometimes they'll learn how to unfasten it, then tear it to shreds anyways. You can't leave any food out or else they'll find it then set up camp near your house. I had a neighbor who used to leave food and water outside for his cats. A family of raccoons moved in under his porch because of it. They're pretty cute when they wash their hands in the water bowl before they eat, but I was always afraid I'd be woken in the middle of the night to the sound of the raccoons ripping his cats apart. They seemed to get along very well, luckily.

We're currently raising three baby raccoons. Here's a picture of one in the outdoor pen we have for the two older raccoons. Her butt was sticking out when I walked over to the cage and she lazily turned around to see what I was doing. Haha. They're pretty naughty and certainly interesting to raise.

If you have the money, you can get them vaccines just like a dog, You just have to find a vet that will treat them (not so easy).

>>274962
>You also have to keep them in a pen.
Q: Should a raccoon live in the house?
A: Yes, if I don't, I won't be a pet. All you have otherwise is a caged, wild animal.
(^from the remo raccoon website. You have to raccoon-proof your home too, but that comes with the territory)

All wild animals carry diseases and parasites, there is nothing special about raccoons besides that they are still one of the main carrier of rabies which will hopefully finally exterminated in some dozen years. (like in most parts of Europe)

>>275116

In general, raccoons don't prey on animals as large as a cat which is nearly as strong as themselves. There was only one case in Olympia two years ago where raccoons systematically killed cats and smaller dogs.

>>275133

There is a lot of bullshit advice on Remo Raccoon's website. There is practically no way to secure a house for raccoons. They can climb up practically every furniture and WILL take everything in their paws to study it. Of course, you can take a raccoon in if you are present the whole time, but if you are not... have fun.
>> Anonymous
>>275131
because they're too smart to be kept as pets. You can try to keep one as a "guest", but it will find and eat your twinkies/doritos no matter how well you've hidden them and will probably leave/escape as soon as it thinks it can find better food elsewhere.
>> Anon
We had a racoon that sould come by and eat our garden veggies, so we left him a plate outside all the time. we had maybe 2 Tomatoes, 3 carrots, 1/4 of a head of lettuce and a radish.

He loved us, and our dog groomed him/her once haha.

>There is a lot of bullshit advice on Remo Raccoon's website. There is practically no way to secure a house for raccoons.
It's only the most informative website on keeping raccoons as pets. The Remo Raccoon writer is forthright and does not minimize the difficulties. Keeping a raccoon is only for the extremely devoted, and the website goes out of its way to explain the complications of owning one. Raccoon-proof is a relative term. They explain that if you want one as a pet you will have to accept the occasional destroyed house item, put locks on pantries, ovens, and refrigerators, and give it its own room in the house. If you have nice wood furniture then you shouldn't consider one, but if you are obsessed enough to want a raccoon as a *companion* and are willing to change your lifestyle accordingly, then you should keep them in the house. Putting them in a (huge) pen for their whole lives is an option, but they develop a less personable temperament.

Well, mostly true. I have some issues with Remo Raccoon's website, though. I think that a decent pen is quite essential and keeping them in the house the whole time is not really appropriate to the species (and to the furniture). At least there should be some devices usable as den and for climbing and a watering hole/tub. It mustn't be an outdoor pen, an indoor pen is okay, too. I think the best thing is an outdoor pen with access to a smaller indoor pen (for example a ladder to a window of the house) which is next door to the apartment which is always open when one is present.

There is also this sentence in the FAQ that raccoons should be kept alone because they are typically loners. Since that's often not true in the wild, there are now other owners who oppose this statement quite strongly.
