>>258259 They discovered an early tyrannosaurid in China, Dilong paradoxus, that had the filamentous downy feathers common to many dinosaurs there, including Velociraptor. From that the idea came that all tyrannosaurids had feathers, but the skin impressions found with some T. rex fossils show the pebbly skin typical of most dinosaurs. It's possible the young rexes had down of some kind, but lost it as they grew big enough to do without it.
