Dear /a/, Why is it that cats can be declawed, but I've never really heard of dogs being declawed? Was discussing this with my girlfriend earlier.. neither of us really knew. I assumed it was because veins are in dogs claws, but not too sure about cats?

It's because cats keep their claws retracted to protect them from wear. That means cats need to scratch stuff so their claws don't overgrow. And humans hate it when cats scratch their furniture.

Dogs don't have sharp claws they need to maintain in this way, so there's no incentive for declawing.

We've always had cats that are declawed, or least they were before we got them from the pet shelter

but I'm pretty convinced now how bad it actually is for them.

I've heard of dogs getting declawed.

It's a horrible thing declawing. Everything a cat does is related to its claws. The way it grips things is comparable to our opposable thumbs. Imagine being without your thumb and that is what it would be like for a cat to be declawed

People don't like to get scratched

Cats have sharp claws

Dogs do not

I do not understand how you couldn't understand this

>>76702You don't seem to understand that de-clawing is cruel and unnecessary. A practice brought on by people too arrogant and decadent to buy a scratching post for their cat to shred. Let alone share a daily cuddle to keep it tame.

kitty walks on toes

declawing = toes cut off

toes cut off = kitty being in pain til it does

get the poor thing some claw covers

dies, not does. shit

I beg to differ.. I have a huskey that will tear the shit outta yer leg if you don't pay attention to him.. Those clawz HURT!

Dog claws can be pretty sharp. I've been cut by them before.
Especially if they broke the claw and it has sharper edges. Ouch.

dog claws can be sharp but they can be regularly cut. after messing around with a few kittens i can understand why some owners want them declawed. i still have a few scars on my thigh. ow.

No animal should be declawed. People often don't take the same time with their cats as they do with dogs, so cats can become less people-friendly than dogs.

Interact with the cat every day, clip the nails and/or use caps over the nail, and you won't have any scratching problems.

Actually, think about cutting the last digit off of all of your fingers, that's more accurate.

Oh god... I have a Shiba-Inu (I belive at least...) with apparently some Huskie and Shepard blood and she scratches the fuck out me all the time...

You could probably train those sharp-clawed dogs to put up with wearing special strap on booties on their front paws, like those outdoor wear booties for dogs.

those caps look kinda neat.
but wouldn't they just fall off? how long can you keep them on?
>> Anonymous
Google it up. "Softpaws" Duh

They will come off after a length of time as the nails grow back, simply glue them back in after trimming claws.

cats are inside, with sharp claws to tear up ur shit. Dogs are outside with dull claws to dig up your yard.
