Well it seems they've been spotted in every continent except antartica, so no they don't just happen in the USA. I'm no expert on the subject, but I'm going to guess why you hear about them happening in the US versus anywhere else is because they happen there the most. There's even a part of the US called "Tornado Alley".
What we do hear alot of are Hurricanes or typhoons, which are pretty much huge oversized ocean tornados. They're the only natural disasters to get their own name!
