Hey /an/.

I just got a baby Ball python, male.

Could anyone with any experience tell me how large I should expect them to get, and how fast? The man at the store suggested in 2-3 years upgrading to a 20-gallon tank.

Also, after extensive handling, do they just become used to people / you? He seems friendly enough.

I've had two ball pythons at different times in my life, they're great snakes. They get to be about 36 - 48 inches, but it's likely it won't grow to be bigger then the tank it's already in, or at least that's what I heard.

Yes, they do get used to you. One of mine could be real fussy, especially when I reached to grab her. She'd tense up and hide her head, but after awhile I could calm her quicker as she got used to my touch. Even so, she bit me twice when I moved for her too fast or touched her head. Those were defensive bites - a quick bite and release and not really painfull at all. Just handle him daily and let him crawl all over you so he associates your scent with that great moving tree-thing he can climb ;)

Here's a good guide I found for you to help you with anything else you need:

Snakes growing to the size of the tank is a complete myth.

Ball Pythons are the tame dogs of the snake world. With Boa Constrictors coming a close second.

Ball Pythons can get up to six feet.

A rule of thumb is one square foot per foot of snake. So a 6' snake would need a 4'x2' cage. 8' needs 6x2, 10' 8x2, 12' 8x4, and so on.

In 2-3 years you will likely have to get a 40L tank. However Aquarium tanks are meant for... dun dun dun... Fish.

In order to keep humidity, you will need to buy a plexiglass to cover the tank with.

Pic related is my cage for my Burmese Python. It is 6x2x2 and a 53" Burmese is in it at the moment.

I've had mine for 3 years. She's about 39 inches long. I've got her in a 40 gallon 20"x50" tank. It's big for her, I'm told, but I think it's nice to give her a lot of room.

She only snapped at me once, this was the first day I had her. Beyond that, I've never had any fuss from her, even when I touch her head [which I'm told they don't like, but she tolerates it].

She stopped curling into a ball whenever I reached into her tank a few months into having her. Sometimes she'll hiss whenever I wake her up or surprise her. Othr than that, she's tame around people in general. A real sweetheart.

Had a corn snake until I went to uni, where I wasn't allowed any animals in halls and had to find her a new place. She (only found out when I took her to a guy who was organising re-homing) now lives at whipsnade zoo. Thing was about 5 feet, docile and stupid. With handling, yes, snakes get used to you. Always handle them, or they come to assosciate opening of the vivarium with feeding - bad idea. The worst a snake will do, really, is shit on you, so find out how long after it eats the food comes out the other end and avoid handling at that time. I kid you not, snake shit is projectile stink-goo. Not pleasant when fresh, and will pretty much ruin anything it is ejected onto. Snakes have such cute faces. The little mouth hole at the front <3

My ball is a male. He's about 4 or 5 now and he's really nice. My mother and I were the ones who primarily took care of him but he's never struck at anyone.

Just don't handle his food and go to handle the snake without washing your hands.
