Hey guys, I just got a Golden Retriever puppy a few days ago.

He is a wonderful dog and already heels and sits with no problem at all (I'm surprised that he seemed to know it all naturally).

My question is, how do I stop him from nipping too hard? I know that to stop all nipping you scream "Ouch!" in a high pitched voice and pull away then ignore for a few minutes... but I don't mind regular nipping.

Any ideas? Other than that, about how long should I wait for him to learn not to nip at all if I go that way?

(Pic is not my dog)

Bop the top of his nose when he does it. works with my puppies.

and also, op pic is not their puppy. (used that pic almost a year ago on my senior project at school.) and such wonderful memories it brings me finally finishing that fucking project. Op you've made me happy today by using that pic. Thank you.

or if you wanna do it more along the lines of domination.. you could also put your mouth over the top of their muzzle. then again chances are the inside of you mouth will get licked.. which isn't really fun.

Scream ouch when it hurts and don't when it doesn't.

if it ever bites you and doesnt release right away, push on their tongue or under their tongue

they hate that and i only had to do it twice on my dog, now she never bites ever

get it some teething toys and/or tap it lightly on the nose when it nips and say "NO!"
don't make discipline abusive.

If you don't want your dog to nip too hard, you shouldn't let him nip at all. There's a difference between him accidentally hitting you with his teeth from his open mouth (like when playing) and him biting you. Letting him bite you is undermining your dominance. Besides, it's a pain to teach the dog the difference between "okay" bites and "not okay" bites.

tl;dr: don't let him nip you at all.

Agreed. Your puppy'll just get confused if you're okay with some bites, and not others.

There needs to be a definite NO to all biting, otherwise it can become a serious problem later on.
