Cure for drooling? Anonymous
So I read
>>223517
which was a thread about suckling cats and why they do it, but I have a more specific question. My cat drools and I want to know if it's possible to teach him to stop and if anyone's heard anything about possible methods.

My sister found him in our town abandoned by his mother, so presumably when she moved her kittens she forgot one or whatever. So I had no hand in weaning him too early or anything like that. We fed him kitten milk from a plastic needle-less syringe until he moved on to solid food, yadda yadda yadda. That's not the problem though.

Whenever he jumps up for a cuddle, he'll drool all over me and it's really disgusting. I'm not going to deny him affection because of it, but it's gross and towels aren't always immediately to hand and you can't shove a towel under him because he'll jump off and go away.

A cat I rescued had a similar problem, and it was caused abses(spelling?) in it's mouth, and had to get a couple it's teeth removed, but it doesn't drool at all now. I'd suggest getting it checked out by a vet.

Everybody automatically says it's caused by a medical problem, BUT IT'S NOT CONSTANT DROOLING. It's only when he kneads his paws on me and burrows his head in. I have no doubt that it's not caused by an abscess in his mouth.

I was more looking for any possible training tips... As hard as it is to train a cat!

You can't train him not to do something which isn't voluntary behaviour. You can't choose whether to drool or not, neither can your cat.

Clearly, your cat still associates cuddlign up with you with kitty milk, and salivates involuntarily. What you probably need to do is get the cat to associate warm nourishing kitty milk with a source that's unrelated to you.

Try getting a special small bowl placed in a certain area of house, with a small amount of kitten milk in it for a while, until at least when the kitty associates the bowl with the milk and not you.

have him put down. that'll certainly stop the drooling.

Fill his mouth with dehydrated silica.

Has an interesting idea. It could certainly be the case.

I have two cats, and one drools profusely when i groom her or cuddle her excessively. I thought it was amusing (yet strange) so I asked the vet. Apparently it is an involuntary happiness reaction - when they're particularly delighted, they drool.

Awesome.

Anyways, hopefully you can take some comfort in knowing your cat is happy as a pig in shit when he's cuddling with you. I'm pretty sure that's something you can't condition out of him.

Of the 10 cats I have owned in my lifetime, only one has ever drooled out of delight. His drooling got worse as he got older, so I don't like your chances. To combat, or should I say *evade* the problem, I just moved away before his drool reached critical mass and became airborne by his high-velocity head gyrations.
