Sup /an/, I made a thread a few days ago about someone who wanted to give their accidental litter of baby rats on Craigslist.

I emailed the person, and they emailed me back saying the babies were about 3 weeks old and just opening their eyes, and then sent me a batch of photos of the babies.

I wanted to share the pics and ask if these babies look healthy. The quality is mediocre, since they're from a cell phone. What do you guys think? (I would go visit the babies myself, but the owner does live about 2 and a half hours from me, and I can't make a 5 hour there and back journey due to my work schedule this week.)

Also (I didn't want to ask the owner since they probably don't know) is there any way to accurately sex baby rats? I definitely want a pair of females, and don't want to make the same mistake their owner did and end up with ratty incest.

Pic dump ensuing.

i don't know much about rodents, but i'd assume that like cats and dogs, u can sex them fairly accurately by the time they are about a week or so old. once their junk is big enough to see basically......but again, i'm not sure, just an assumption
they look adorable OP, good luck

I think they're too young right now, I'd give them another week or two. They eyes open at around 2 weeks. These guys look very young to me. Ask them to hold two for you until then?

It can be hard to tell their sex at that age. Bascially the urethra is slightly higher up the belly on boys, closer to the tail on girls.

I mentioned in the other thread that I accidentally got a boy when I wanted a girl. It can be very hard to tell when they're babies. I was really glad I got a boy in the end, though... they're very cuddley and affectionate.

They need to be separated at 4 weeks as that is when they can technically start mating. Youngest rat I've seen in real life was about 5 weeks old, and it was obvious it was male. They shouldn't really go to new homes until they are 6 weeks old though.

Are those baby dumbo rats?

If their owner doesn't sex and seperate them eventually (assuming they all don't have homes) the problem will crop up again. I think I read that shortly after rats are weaned they can breed.

well, firstly the owner must seperate the girls and boys when they hit about 5 weeks of age. most ratties hit sexual maturity by 6 weeks.
also, you can sex really young rats by seeing how far apart their anus and reproductive organs are. close is female, far is male. they look like pretty healthy little buggers, too. i want one. :3

Thanks for the advice. They are cute little buggers. I guess I should casually suggest to the owner to wean them soon?
