I saw one of these Atlas Attacus moths in a butterfly garden. Holy fucking shit, I thought it was a fake toy they put on a branch. They had to have a sign below it that said it was alive. The one in this picture is honestly somewhat smaller than the one I saw.
Scared the crap out of me at first, something just inherently creepy about it. Imagine if you saw this in your shower or something. But now I find them amazingly beautiful.

Hahaha, it looks like a rug.

I've never seen one of those before, and would honestly say that I too would have the shit scared out of me if I actually saw one in person, especially if it happened to be in my house. They've got a really cool wing pattern, though. But goddamn, they're huge.

Well, these 5 Atlas cocoons are hanging in my room and are going to hatch this month.

I can't tell you how hard waiting is...especially when they could hatch anytime...

You breed em? Or did you collect em in hopes of them opening in front of your eyes?

Raised them from eggs.
But some caterpillars died, because I didn't have much experience in breeding moths when I got them.
These 5 are left...if I'm lucky, one or two of them will become fertilized and spam some eggs.

how does one go about getting into raising moths?

A look at OP's pic is the answer.

holy shit, that thing is huge.. and beautiful patterns on it btw

reminds me of one time when I put a UV lamp in my bathroom for fun.. what was less funny was the next morning when I had forgotten to shut it off during the night and there were moths everywhere.

I walked in to take a shower right out of bed, still sleepy, so I didn't really notice them. That was untill the hot water and steam disturbed a few dozen of them and started flying all around me, fucking scared the hell out of me. Must have been close to a hundred moths in just the space of the shower, creepiest thing was that even when I tried to kill some of them with hot water they just crept out of the drain and walked away to go dry somewhere...
