Hey /an/ this has been bothering me. My dog found a bunny alive in the yard the other day with a straight slice down its belly leaving organs hanging out. Everything seemed attached and intact; it wasn't bleeding but would leak small amounts of white fluid here and there.

I rushed it to the vet only to have the receptionist tell me it'd die soon anyway so she'll have someone put it to sleep. I left it at that, but should i have? She wasn't a vet or even a tech. It's been nagging me that maybe it could have been saved and released back into the woods beside my house.

tl;dr: Could a live bunny with sliced open midsection survive with help?

no.
stop beating up yourself over that and know that you did everything you could.

ehh at least it's not suffering

put your place in the rabbits eyes. if a giant dog came up and ripped up your belly with your organs sticking...do you think you would even want to be picked up by another giant animal (aka you). if i were the rabbit ide think i dear god WHY WONT I DIE?!?!?!?!

...Yeah, i'd pretty much think "worst day ever." Odd thing is my dog didn't have any blood on him, and when i first noticed he kept nudging it with his nose. When i yelled at him to get away he picked it up, ran into the house, placed the bunny on his bed and left it to me. This dog also catches birds in mid-air then lets them fly away. American Eskimos are messed up, man.

nope, organs hanging out = bad news, almost certainly death by infection.

plus, the expensive for the surgery and aftercare for a rabbit would have been ridiculous even assuming it could have lived, and vets can't afford to do that shit pro bono for a wild animal.

i'm sure you cared to some extent but not enough to pay hundreds/thousands of dollars, eh?

I didn't even think about infection. Clearly i am a moron.

Yeah, i would have paid a hundred or two, but anything more than that with the high probability of it still dying... I'm grateful to anons for making me realize i did the right thing. Glad the little guy didn't suffer any more.
