hi /an/

Im currently debating the purchase of a Spiny Flower Mantis, but am running into a few issues that maybe you guys could help out with.

Ive only found one site selling live ones (as i don't wish to incubate) and he wants to sell them in a pair, which i think is kinda silly seeing they're cannibalistic, and hes also located in the UK (I'm in Orlando FL). Does anyone happen to know where i can find 1 pre-adult for sale preferably inside the states?

Cats bore me... they meow, poop, pee, meow, eat, meow. I mean how can a cat compare to the awesomeness of a Mantis?

Well at least a cat won't crawl in your ear at night and eat your fucking brains.

mantids aren't too long lived..they don't make great pets.

I pity you for your ignorance of the MANTIS SHRIMP! I saltwater shrimp, nicknamed the 'thumbsplitter' by fisherman for their ability to split fingers to the bone using their razor sharp seraded forarm, or the abilty to break fingers and aquarium glass (need acrylic) using their blunt smashing hammer. Its the ultimate pet!

OP mantis > mantis shrimp

Yeah, they're badass. Not only that, they are probably the easiest saltwater pet you could possibly keep! They tolerate a much wider range of conditions than fish, and they are also less sensitive to sudden changes in those conditions.

On the other hand, getting food for them can be a hassle and/or expensive.

Also, the aquarium glass breaking is something that everyone loves to talk about, but it very rarely happens. VERY rarely. A large specimen could break the glass of a small aquarium on a lucky hit, but certainly not that of a large one, or anything acrylic.

That's a fucking awesome mantis, but seriously, I'd consider incubating, since they don't live very long. Having one from birth extends the time you have to enjoy it. Plus, baby mantids are cute! Bloodthirsty cannibals, but cute!

a few weeks ago i read a story on yahoo news.

it was about using insects instead of sprays. someone bought 750,000 ladybugs and let them go.

the site where they were purchased was mentioned and one of the other bugs for sale was mantis'

it was like 16 bucks for 2000 ladybugs and 90 bucks for upto 250 praying mantis

I don't think the OP wants 250 of them. The guy probably wanted to sell you a pair so you can raise them. That way you get infinite mantids instead of just one that lives a couple of months. There's a guy on SA that sells scorpions like that. You probably don't want to ship a bug from the UK, anyway. Have you tried GOOGLE?
