I used to have 3 crayfish, 1 giant male, 1 medium female and 1 medium male.
I had the two medium sized ones first, and they got along great. They were always swimming happily without a care. However, once I added in the giant one he proceeded to rip the claws off of the medium sized male and routinely rape the female. The female would still hide around with the medium male, but when the giant on came alone the medium male would always run. Both of the medium crayfish, who were once so carefree, spent all of their time hiding and slinking away.
One day I came home and the medium sized male had been killed by the giant male. I like to think he stood up for the female in once desperate last stand against rape, and allowed her to escape by sacrificing his life.
I felt too bad keeping the female around after that, so I released them (illegally) into the wild, but in separate areas. I still remember how happy the giant crayfish was to be free, he just swam back and fourth in the lake, again and again, as if he was overjoyed to be out of a tank. I wonder if the small 10 gallon tank had driven him to insanity, and if being released was a sort of redemption for him.
