Fuck you Walmart Anonymous
Not to be too whiny or anything...

But I just got back from a Walmart - a bit irritated. I don't usually go there but a bunch of friends and I were bored and decided to walk in and fuck around.

I visited their fish section and they had 2-3" Pacus for 6.99 each with a label attached that stated they only grow up to 10". I was a bit surprised to see this, seeing as I had recently had a Pacu myself. (They also had Oscars improperly labeled as well, stating they also only grow to 10" when I know they can get to almost double that size.)

I walked up to the department supervisor and told him that Pacus can get much bigger than that, even 3-4' in length, and that they need A LOT of space to swim and grow, instead of a tiny 5 gallon display tank where they had crammed in about 15 Pacus. I told him that they should change the label to provide accurate information to customers. However, the guy didn't seem to care at all! He rolled his eyes and told me that fish stop growing to a size that matches their tank or some bullshit like that.

Fucking Walmart. I almost feel like complaining.

Walmart sucks all around, but sorry dude, fish do indeed stop growing if their tank is too small.

On second thought, I don't know if that is true for all fish, but it is for some. Goldfish, for example.
>> Anonymous
I also have a Pacus from Wal-mart and mine is about 8" and I've only had him for about 3 or 4 months and when i first got him he was a little bit over an inch... This proves they grow much larger then just 10 fucking inches... Someone needs to show this link to walmart

OP here

Yeah, I know they can stop growing, but I don't like it because it stunts their growth and it really isn't all that healthy for them.

For me, a fish is no different than a cat or a dog - if you're willing to adopt a pet and take care of it, you shouldn't do it half-assed, you know?

Fish do NOT stop growing related to tank size.
That's just nonsense.

I'm sure most do, maybe not all major predatory fish but most simple fish do I'm sure.

A great white shark is a fish and im sure if you got one right after it just started living and put it in a small talk, im sure that it would keep growing and if the asshole who didnt realize this, im sure it would just simply die.

picture of my Pacus by the way

Then again, a great white shark is a lot different than a goldfish.

Why in god's name would a fish stop growing?
He is growing to a size that his genetic plan has built in.
The only reason that would prohibit it from growing to full size is that in nature the fish will get a better nutrition than in captivity.

"grow to the size of their tank" translates to "grow until they stress out and die" in reality.

http://www.anythingfish.com/images/Ted/PhotoGallery/TedsMasterIndex.htm

Healthy adult pacu are huge! If kept at all, they need giant, custom made setups. And for fuck's sake they're a schooling fish!(related to fuckin neons, etc.) I see them alone far too often. Unfortunatly the average fish buyer doesn't give a shit.
>> Anonymous
>>171245
OP here

I don't think the average fish buyer just doesn't give a shit, they're just usually ignorant about how to properly care for fish.

Like with Walmart, saying a Pacu can only grow to 10" when they can actually grow to 3-4' in length, and oh geez I forgot that they WERE schooling fish. You would need AT LEAST a thousand gallon tank to properly care for a few.
>> Anonymous
>>171245
But are they tasty?
>> Anonymous
Fish growth can be stunted, but not stopped by keeping them in a small enclosure. I've seen pacus kept in tanks that were only a couple hundred gallons, and they are usually still almost two feet long. I think they would die in anything smaller than that.

>>171204Just take a permanent marker, and write the real size they grow in big bold letters on the walmart labels.

>>171260I've never really been sure why they are kept as pets so often. They are really just game fish, like bass, or trout. Actually a bass would probably make a better aquarium fish than a pacu. Anyway yeah you can eat them with gusto. They should be pretty tasty.

Fuck that, get an enormous 3 million gallon tank and put your pet dolphins and pilot whales in it. Instant awesome.

u think these walmart people care though, they spend most of their days being yelled at or harassed by patrons with comments or complaints all day i think they become callous to anything let alone the well being of the fish.

Walmart can be at time cruel to pets and fish that it sells, HOWEVER they still have a better quality of life then in the wild!

Last time I went to Walmart the bettas where in tiny plastic tupperware cups that looked warped, were barely half filled with water, and the water looked absolutely FILTHY. I mean completely disgusting. I could barely make out the fish in one of the cups. One was dead. I was going to bring this to the attention of whatever associate was in pets, but couldn't find anyone, so I asked someone in a nearby section and she was like, "Oh, Tim is working in pets. I'll call him." and then I heard them ask for him over the loudspeaker and nobody ever showed up. Lovely. So I just let the woman in the other section know, "Hey, well I just wanted to tell him that the betta fish need their water cleaned immediately. It looks like they're dying, and one is already dead from no care." And she just shrugged and said, "Okay, I'll tell him if he shows up today."
FILLED ME WITH CONFIDENCE, I TELL YOU.

Here's the deal. Walmart does not CARE in the least about thier fish. I worked in thier Pets dept. The only knowlege about fish I had was what was available on those tank cards...until I really got into the hobby myself. Then, found most of the sales infor to be wrong. I was the only one who cared in the least about the fish, and kept the bettas "washed out". That is, until I got an exotic parasitic fish disease from cleaning the tanks...the CDC was involved...much disability, sugery...but Walmart operates the same way, nonetheless. No gloves on associates, uninformed sales clerks. Don't buy fish there.

I tell you, one time I wanted to change water, so I got my trusty hose and bucket and started sucking.
Idiot me, I didn't notice when to stop and swallowed a good load of fishwater.Blech.
Anyway, next day all my fish are dead with bloated bellies, wriggling with worms.
Had to puke now. Oh god, please do not let it be infective.
I take a dead fish, and go to a clinic.
Turns out it is fishtapeworm and I caught it too...

I'm a Department Manager for the Pet Department at Wal-Mart and fish DO indeed stop growing if the tank is too small. We also carry so many in a tank (depending on customer volume) to provide the customers with ample stock of our merchandise. And, if we can help it, we never carry more fish in a tank than will take 2-3 weeks to sell.

I hope for the sake of the potential fish that no one here is seriously buying into the "fish only grow to the size of their tank" myth. Also, if anyone here is going to a Wal-Mart employee for advice on the care and maintenance of fish and aquariums... well, you need to be fucking shot. I would trust randomly googled websites before I would trust anyone at that cockstain of a chain store.

OP here.

Tank size compared to fish growth wasn't the main issue, though we did run with it!

My main complaint was the fact that Pacus were labeled to grow up to 10" when they can get larger, my main point was, why take care of a fish when you're going to confine it and stop its growth? You shouldn't half-ass care for ANY pet, even if it is just a fish, it's still an animal too and if you can't take care of it properly then you shouldn't buy it.

And it is you, the Walmart employee's fault, for not being accurate with your information on the label - this causes ignorance and before you know it you have a little 5 year old and his mom stuffing a bunch of fish into a little 5 gallon octagon tank without even cycling it properly.

The fish will be either dead or dying by the next day and it is your duty as a person who works with pets to educate the people you are selling these pets to.

its fucking walmart op, people think its capitalism perfected but its quite the opposite, its like socialized medicine, make it available to everyone with shitty quality so it doesnt hurt the owners, only people forced to go to walmart cuz they pushed out specialized stores... walmart is socialism, and if you dont watch out /an/ it might be us in that tiny tank, stunned and incapable of growth, and im fucking tired and i came up with this, im proud of myself
