Cat Litter - what's the best? Anonymous
So I'm sick and tired of these granule-type cat litter, since somehow my damn cat gets it all over my apartment even though her box is completely enclosed with a lid and cat door in the utility room.

Which of the non-granule type litters is the best?

I had to use Feline Pine after my cat went through radioactive iodine treatment,

It's like rabbit pellets that disintegrate into a very pine smelly sawdust mix as the cat uses it. It really has done well to keep in the ammonia smell the whole time, there's only a pine wood scent.

A 5lb bag is $2.49 here and will last a month

There's no clumping to scoop out every single day, the pinedust dries on its own to be reused, there's a little tracking of the sawdust if you dont have one of those special mats. It's super cheap and natural

Putting a rug under the cat box also helps with the trailing of litter. a lot of it comes off on the rug.

we have a regular oval shag rug under the catbox and she still tracks both kinds of litter all the way out and into my bedroom, so one of those mats with the little rubber spikes is probably better

"worlds best cat litter." always get multiple cat strength, and sprinkle with some baking soda.

it is fucking crazy how good this shit works.

I used clay fresh step for years, and switched to "yesterday news" brand.
Clay is too much dust and it's bad for pussy cats too because it creates so much dust.

I can't help with brands, but we always use wood and paper-based litter. It's light, highly absorbent and there' no dust whatsoever.
The problem is when you change from clay-based, the cats forget their own strength and start flicking it hard, not expecting it to move and having it fly all over the place... but what do they care... we clean up after them anyway lol

you could try something like this Clevercat top entry litterbox. It's impossible for the cat to kick litter out of it and it's got little groves on the top that catches loose litter. It works pretty well for my cat, though the cat shreds the liner so I do without those. But it has done wonders for reducing the amount of litter that gets tracked around.

Really, it's just a plastic tub with a lid and hole in it, you could probably make your own if you can't find one easy enough.

Oh lord. Our cat hated that stuff so much she preferred to piss and shit on the floors until we returned to generic 40 pound cat litter rucksacks. We tried to do the right thing for her, but after a week of defiling our house, what were we to do? She refuses premium cat foods too.

Sigh.

Yea, my cats didn't get along with the pine stuff, especially once it broke down from pellet into pine shavings. I don't know how 221311 manages to get his cats to use only 5lbs for a month, that would last like a week with two cats doin their thing to it.

wouldn't that be kind of gross for the cat? as well as likely to fall over?

Hmmm...I think I might order that.

For the 'likely to fall over part' ... Well, how much of what type of litter are you putting in? For most litter types, there will be more than enough litter in there to give it a solid base. Also, a cat is .. a cat. They can balance on things with wheels, shaky bookshelves, and tree branches when they want to - a box with a flat bottom isn't going to tip if there's litter in it.

Also, why would this be any more "gross for the cat" than any other type of litterbox? What are you referring to?

My mom uses a combination of clay and newspaper pellets. She puts the clay on the bottom and then layers the newspaper pellets on top. It doesn't do too bad.
