Are they supposed to get that fat or is that just fur puff/camera angle?

I've never seen a guinea pig that wasn't fat, but that one's pushin' it.

Yay I love my piggies! I'll get pics of the other one up later, but this is my newest. Sorry about the rotation, i can't get it to post correctly anywhere lately.

These things are the devil incarnate.

I leave mine for a few minutes while me one year old niece cuddles with it. Then when I get back I notice that the darn thing is eating her bisqiuets.

Now a few months later it still knows when I get a cookie and always wants a taste of it. Even going so far that he tries to pull himself out of the top of the cage.

Nearly died of laughter.

Note: Only take piggies when you have a oxygen supply nearby. Altho the effect of sleeping gas is fun to see. In small doses it has the opposite effect as they become more and more active.

We rescued Mom and Pop from a depressing existence in the back of someone's garage. We thought they were the same gender :-p No one wanted the babies so we kept them all.

Well, that was more the sound they made when we gave them food. It's like "FOOD FUCK YES GIVE ME FOOD OH YES YUM" When they were happy and content they purred or something.
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>179693

mine just let out a low, happy squeaking sound. It's SOOOOO cute.
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>179693

and I think you meant to say "the sound that they make when i walk by the room, open the fridge to get myself a drink or rustle a plastic bag" :D

>>179686
Yeah I love coming into the room and all 6 of them starting squealing at once!
>> Anonymous
When I was 10 I used to torture the four or so my sister kept.

I mainly tortured them because of a long brooding hatred. At first, they were cute. Then they started to stink, and squeel all the time, and it was my job to clean out the bottom of their cage that was sopping wet with urine and fecal pellets. I couldn't sleep some nights because of their rustling and squeels.

They still remain to this day the most disgusting pet animal I can ever think of. Just seeing them makes me want to throw every last one of them into those plastic balls and play soccer while their sweet sweet screams fill my ears.

that's because you waited too dang long to change their cage. mine NEVER smell and I NEVER have a huge problem with the cage.
>> spiderman !!Q+JluTncCte
>>179741
do you give them baths? or do they sort of just clean themselves? spiders groom themselves :D
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>179749

if they are happy piggies, they groom and clean themselves. I've never had to bathe my guys and my gal, and all of em are doing okay .
>> spiderman !!Q+JluTncCte
>>179750
how much do they sell for? i guess it depends on coloration?
>> Anonymous
I couldn't bring my guinea pigs to college, so my mom is caring for them at home. I find out later that she has been giving them baths once every week, and I couldn't convince her that guinea pigs don't need to be bathed often, if at all, unless visibly dirty... >_>
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>179755
heehehe, well, as long as the piggies like it i guess they just get an extra massage?

>>179752
it doesn't really depend on anything, though i would recommend either adopting or if you're going to buy from a store, get them as a baby. i think my new girl cost me roughly 25 with adoption fees and my two boy cost me between 15 and 20. It could be more, but I can't remember. If you are gone during the day or whatever, get two so they have something to do, and a big cage. After that, expenses are bedding, toys, hay and food, then vitamin C drops for the water.
>> Anonymous
>>179752
Usually like 20-30 bucks. Plus cage and shit figure 100. Come to think of it, I bet you can find a lot of people giving them away on craigslist. The only neggitive thing about them is cleaning out the big cage. It's a bit livestock-eqsue and it has to be done frequently. Other than that they are easy-keep. Just feed them veggies, hay, and pellets. They don't need to be socialized or excercized much, particularly if you have more than one. They do seem happier when in pairs or small groups, though.

>>179765
>>179768
thanks. i couldn't get one right now since i should be moving in a month and a half and wouldn't be able to care for them for 3 months. something to think about down the road though..they are funny little critters.
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>179771

they're little bundles of joy-- just make sure to test their personalities and make sure they fit with you BEFORE you take them home. I like my piggies very vocal, so when I pet them, give them food and so on they squeak and squeal and sometimes scream if they don't want to be petted or if they reallyyy like something they settle into a deep purr.

Preset up a cage, too. It helps. I like the carefresh bedding, then I give them some paper crinkles. It's fun!
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>179780

I will warn though- they only live for 4-5 years and stress out really easily. I recently lost one of mine and it's still heartbreaking.
>> spiderman !!Q+JluTncCte
>>179783
that sucks, i bet it is hard. 4-5 years is easily long enough to get attached..but not too long overall.

female tarantulas can live over 20 years, but i don't think you bond with them quite the same as you would with something like a GP. i've had some die, and it does suck..but not nearly as much as when we put our dog to sleep.

found someone with 4 2.5 year old bonded females in tampa..but it would be a bad idea to take them. and now that i know they only live so long..that's like half their life gone already.

he only made it through about 3 and a half. I took him in for a yearly check up and he had some lumps in a couple places. Got surgery to remove them, but one of the sutures got infected and we couldn't fight the infection. He passed on the night of the 2nd surgery. I got him creamated and his box of ashes is sitting on top of the cage, home, where he belongs :) I got a rose from the vets office too that I have nearby. It oddly hasn't died or wilted yet- i'm impressed
>> spiderman !!Q+JluTncCte
>>179790
:(

that's cool you have him still at home with you..even if it's not quite the same. nice about the rose too.

so what are they anyway? rodents? or what are they related to? i really don't know much about them at all.

>>179783
Our guinea pigs lived for seven years. Which is amazing considering we had a large dog that liked to look into their cage and bark at them and two cats that would sit up on top of their cage (until they dropped their tails into it and the guinea pigs bit them) and live in a place with really cold winters and everytime we opened a door a whoosh of cold air would come in.
>> Liska !!LIVFOETqL8j
>>179798

they're rodents and a prey animal in most locations around the country. A lot of humans eat them, too.

>>179816
that's awesome- i hope my piggies like that long. Of course, it makes loosing my piggy at 3 and a half hurt even more, though.

Guinea pigs belong to a group of South American rodents called cavies. They are the cousins of such bigger SA rodents as capybaras and maras. (Pictured here: a mara)

guinea?... pigs??? Do they taste like pork?

I've always imagined they'd taste more like rabbit, but who knows. I wish I knew where I could try some guinea pig. I'm always curious about new kinds of meat.

Got any pet shops nearby?
