Dearest /an/, I just adopted a white male rat from a shelter, about a year old, who was found abandoned under someone's porch for two weeks. He was really friendly and crawled all over my shoulders when I first got him, and the next day after. He would let me handle him and pet him. The day after that, he suddenly started running away and squeaking when I tried to pick him up, and nipping at my hands. I tried leaving the door open the next day to let him explore on his own and he promptly leapt on my arm and sunk his teeth in. Twice. I didn't hit him but I brushed him off and then I couldn't get him back in his cage without him attacking so I waited until he went in and locked it again. My girlfriend thought he was just being playful, so I tried playing with him tonight (petting him, feeding him tons of treats as I have been) and he nipped a few times playfully, then sunk his teeth into my thumb, closed his eyes and continued to bite as hard as he could until I got my other hand in there and grabbed him off. It's bleeding like crazy. As we speak he's been staring at me from his cage and sniffing me. He doesn't seem to bite unless I approach him but I'm going to have to because he has an appointment for neutering tomorrow. What do I do to befriend the little dude?
Pic related. His name is Ridley.
tl;dr: how do i tame rat?
