So I know that pine and cedar wood are bad for rats. I have a giant homemade cage for my 2 rats, and most of it is made out of wood....I don't know what kind of wood it is.

If it was by chance cedar or pine, is there any chance it could hurt them? The entire inside of the cage is covered in chicken wire type stuff, so they can't chew too much. Also, the cage itsself was made 4 years ago, if the age of the wood matters.

The problem with some kinds of wood is the aromatic oils, and it really only matters with the shavings if it's pine. Cedar is red, you'd be able to tell if it's cedar. Pine is actually just fine for chewing on, the reason it's bad bedding is because the shavings can release irritants when they get wet.

couldn't they just chew their way out?

Yeah, I'd be more worried about the rats eating the wood. And it might be hard to clean.

Other than that, no problems.

Don't need to worry about them chewing threough, the entire inside of it it covered in a layer of wiring. And it has a special floor where all the poop and shit falls down through the floor into a drawer I can juts pull out.

Squeeze it! Squeeze it until it's eyes pop out!

the other problem, besides what>>322646said, is the dust from the wood chips. My rat doesn't really chew wood, so... You should be fine.

:/

So does that mean they're always walking on wiring?

Yeah, if the floors are wire put in plenty of solid or cloth floor covers, constantly walking on wire can lead to problems.

Agree! I line my cage with card board so he's not always walking on wire, and then he's got something to tear up and make a little nest outta!
