You want something with a strong odor. And rodents seem to love in for some reason.

1) find a bucket/trash bin and place it next to a table
2)find a wood plank/piece of cardboard and set it on the edge of the table with 1/2 hanging above the trashbin
3)make a ramp leading up to the table
4)place bait on the balanced plank, also you may leave a trail of bread crumbs leading up the ramp and too the plank, just don't use anything the mouse can carry away and hide with and don't use allot

This kinda reminds me of a mouse I found stuck in a mouse trap. The trap had crushed his thigh and although he still lived he couldn't escape his trap. I didn't feel right releasing him with a broken leg cause I thought he'd die so I placed him in a tall bucket with some ferret food, water, and soft bedding.
I didn't think he would survive but I wanted to make the effort anyhow. At the end of the 3rd day, to my surprise, he was able to jump 18 inches, just almost enough to escape the bucket I placed him in. I figured with his leg healed I would be able to release him. My father insisted I release him in the woods except it was the dead of winter at the time. I knew he would freeze to death and after making the effort to save this little guy I didn't want to do that so I let him loose in the barn and scattered some of the ferret food I had given him earlier. Needless to say I felt pretty good about myself. Two months later I went in the barn to get something and noticed what looked like green sand. It was a very very old container of rat poison that had all but denigrated. I never found out what happened to that mouse but I can guess...... :'(

Oh, for fuck's sake. Look into getting a consultation from an exterminator. If he doesn't have friends crawling through the insulation and chewing on wires then use the trash can setup. If you've got an infestation then you'll lose your sympathy for these little fuckers pretty quick. I've kept pet rats for about 17 years, since I was just a little nose miner, but I had no illusions about the rats in my attic being anything other than a health risk and a potential huge bill from an electrician.

Yeah, they're cute, but they're extremely destructive. It's better to get rid of them before they become a huge problem.

You do know that you can just buy a commercial / non-lethal trap rite? I hav no idea where to get one but when I was little, we used one to get a mouse our of our house :3

It was just a little gray box with a one way door and we put some pebo inside (peanutbutter=pebo)

Hurr.

I had a wood mouse at one point. She had absolutely no problems jumping out from normal-sized trashcans.

She escaped quite often and the best way to catch her was to throw a towel over her. This had to be done in a relatively small room with all the small holes sealed (there were a surprising amount of less-than-inch holes under closets etc.)

No idea if OP's mouse is a wood mouse, but they come to houses quite often, especially at fall.

Picture related.

I had the exact same problem. My room has a closet and it ran into it. So I closed it up, and sealed the sides and top with tape and plastic bags. I kept it there overnight, and anytime I heard it doing anything, I'd bang on the door to scare it.

Anyways, next morning I'm able to get a trap, and after baiting it with peanut butter, opened the closet up again and stuck it in there. Assuming it was hungry, I let it sit for about an hour, but nothing. So I opened it up again, and put a fruit loop on the trap. Close it up, and as I'm getting up to put the box of cereal back, I hear a SNAP.

I quickly opened the door to see a mouse with it's head crushed by the bar, blood oozing out it's eyes and mouth, with it's hind legs spazzing uncontrollably making the trap and mouse jump a few times. It was fairly unsettling.

My friend lives in this shitty trailer that's full of mice. I go over there a lot and we were using her laptop, and over the course of a week or two noticed that the fan was giving off a really bad smell.

Turned out a mouse had gotten into the laptop bag, gotten crushed when we put the lappy back and was rotting.
