Snail Anonymous
I found this adorable little chap in my tank last night, guess he came in on the new plants. I'm not sure what species he is, but what is the chance that keeping him will bring a massive snail infestation upon my aquarium?

Given the right conditions and more than one... yeaah.. laawl.. but hey.. t hey eat algae.. ;D

Whether or not you're going to find yourself infested will depend on what kind of snail it is. The only ones I'm really familiar with are the Malaysian trumpet snails that reproduced faster than rabbits. I had someone give me twenty and I ended up with hundreds and hundreds of them.

Get us a side shot and identification will be much easier. All I can say right now is that it's certainly not a trumpet snail. Maybe an apple or ram's horn snail?

How about this? He looks very much like a tiny apple snail...damn I should have taken a 3/4 view shot or something. Ah well, don't wanna bother him again tonight.

Looks very much like an apple snail to me. You shouldn't have any problems with it.

Hmm, not sure. Kind of leaning towards a ram's horn since it's not a really wide shell like an apple snail, but again it's kind of hard to tell

Check out these sites and see what you think.

That is certainly a ramshorn snail.

If there's another one (or more) that you haven't found yet, there is a 95% chance you will have an infestation upon your tank very soon. Also, you should try some planted tank substrates (Flourite, Eco-complete), your plants will grow like crazy and Eco looks amazing.

Also I forgot to mention the important part, which is that ramshorn snails are generally plant safe unless you have very delicate plants. They will mow your algae for you.

Your fingers are long and slender -- just like a female's.

By god they are slender!

Yeah, its a ramshorn. They are not usualy dangerous to the plants and are quite effective algae eaters. However, giving good conditions they will reproduce. Now, I like snails so its not a problem, but some people hate them.
Just in case if you face snail infestation and do not like it you can do following:
1. cut the food intake, do not let any fishfood to fall on the floor of the tank, remove dead leafs from the plants
2. gather snails by the hands, using snail traps, or a piece of vegetable - put it in the tank overnight, take it out in the morning covered in snails, repeat
3. get snail eating fish - loaches, some guramis, puffers (careful - puffers are bullies)
4. antisnail medications with copper, careful - if you have any shrimp it will kill them too
5. take apart tank and boil/soak in bleach everything in it

OP here, yes he looks like a ramshorn. I haven't found any others, but we'll see what happens. Anyway having a snail infestation is a great excuse to set up a dwarf puffer tank :D

Having a few snails are okay, so it really depends on what species
>> coolguy
hah, you sillies, remember that it only takes one pregnant snail to have a snail overload!

And because snails are hermathrodites it doesn't need to be up the duff when you get it...
That said ramshorn snails are great, and you can sell them if you get too many as well. They look really pretty, especilly when fully grown I have a few where the shells diameter is slightly bigger than a 10p coin.

Don't freak out.
Snails are ok.
If there are too many, just get a snail trap or suck em out with a hose.
I drop a tab on the bottom, they approach to feast and get sucked.

put salt on it, it will change colours
