Here's a question.

Assume you found a kitten in some desolate area, by itself. It looks tired and hungry, and won't stop following you around. You have no food to give it and you can't bring it back home or to anywhere else. There's also a near zero chance of it surviving.

Do you leave it alone so it can starve to death by itself, or would you give it a mercy killing? Keep in mind that you CANNOT take it with you or help it any way besides the two ways listed.

i'd go to a local store and buy cat food or bring it to a shelter

Leave it to "die." Because a person who is not a total fucker like the person you mentioned in your scenario, which I'm assuming is you, will come along and have the decency to either report the stray to the local animal control or outright take it to the pound.

There really wouldn't be a situation where I couldn't help the kitten in anyway.
Except maybe something that happened to me once. I was driving along and I spotted a kitten that was hit by a car and was on the road. It was still alive.
What do you do?
There was no saving it but it died while I was there. But assume there's a chance that if you brought it to the vet it could be saved. Would you do it? Assume that if you don't bring it to the vet it will definitely die within 24 hours.
I don't think I would only because I simply cannot afford it. I would bring it there, but I would let them euthanize him if that was the cheapest option. I have two cats of my own and what little money I have should got to them.

Stupid question. Why can't I take it or help it in any other way? So fuck that.

Now if its a hurt kitten, missing all of its legs, neck ripped open, and just mutilated in general and yet its still alive, yes. I would give it a mercy killing then probably be a faggot about it and cry.

Your situation is stupid.

I'd take the kitten home, try to get some food in it and try to get it up and around again, and even if it was guaranteed to die at least it spent its last moments in a warm house with food and someone who gave a shit about it.

You guys clearly don't get it. The question is meant to raise a moral dilemma and to make you think. Of course the "situation" is contrived and silly. So what--that's not the point.

your situation is made of false dichotomy. My own cat is a rescued stray kitten.

We do get it. We just think you're a faggot.

If /I/ can't bring it anywhere else, then i'll just have the kitten FOLLOW me to the nearest Mcdonalds, then proceed to americanize it.
>> Anonymous
Leave it, even though I can't help it there's a chance someone would come along that could before it died.
>> Anonymous
>>141930
You can't raise a moral dilemma with a situation that's not possible.
>>141921present a similar situation that made more sense. Basically, what would you do if you saw a severely injured cat that could be saved but would die in 24 hours if you did nothing? Would you spend all the effort and money to bring it to a vet, only to have it be euthanized, or would you leave it be?

The situation could happen. Rationalize it however you like: A deranged lunatic is going to shoot you in the head if you take the kitten with you"...it's just not realistic. Claiming you can't set up a moral dillema with a fabricated scenario is simply dodging the question.

Op's question is basically "would you euthanize an animal that would otherwise die a slow death instead". That's not much of a dillema in my opinion, but I'm sure some people would struggle with that question.

Your question boils down to: "what do you value higher: the life of a cat, or your own time and money"...that's a different question altogether.

There simply is no situation where I would be forced to kill a cat, therefore the dilemma can't exist. I could always take the cat to the vet and have them do it.
This is kind of depressing though. A few weeks ago I ran over a cat that came out of nowhere. Fortunately it died instantly.

Sure there is: Your worst enemy is holding a pistol to your head. He/she tells you to kill kitty or you get to eat a bullet.

Refusing to belive that some kind of situation where that decision had to be made couldn't happen is conveniently dodging the question.

It's not to hard to say that I value my own life more than the life of a cat.

I sincerely doubt my worst enemy would let me live regardless of whether or not I complied with his/her charming request.

See, you're doing it again. Stop adding extra pages to the book! Just answer the damn question!

I have sex with the kitten.

That's just an idiotically contrived way of forcing the situation that actually completely destroys the intended moral dilemma, as you'll be choosing between your death and the kitten's death, not just between killing the kitten or leaving it to starve.

However, this might work: you're lost in the desert, you have barely enough food and water to survive the walk back to civilization, and for some reason you come accross a starving kitten in the middle of nowhere. You know you need all the food and water you have to survive yourself, and there's nobody else there to come and rescue the kitten. (This still doesn't eliminate the risk to your life, but it doesn't make it nearly as immediate).

Shouldn't all things be destroyed, i.e. mercy killing? Everything dies. Trees dry and wilt. Mountains crumble. Lakes dry, erode, and become deserts. Living things die.

There is no such thing as 'mercy' killing. Just let things die as they live: struggling to cling to their brief lives.

Such as foolish notion as to deliver death to those things we see that are suffering, and to prevent the death of those things we wish to keep. Selfish.

here are some kittens

Desert situation of kitten = food for me, rather than the vultures. Survival takes precedence in that situation.

The question is based on the false premise of being unable to do anything. This never happens. At worst you take it to a vet say, I found this under a dumpster and quickly walk away.

I hate this kind of question that sets up a lose lose situation that does not exist in reality. There are ALWAYS options.
