I have a pressing question: my roommate and I have just captured a kitten by bribing it with tuna. We noticed it limping, and despite from swelling at the ankle joint, seems to be okay. He's pretty friendly, very talkative, and thinks he's starving.

However, we've run into a problem: his father, our local tom cat is stalking him. The behavior we've observed is that they'll chirp and meow at each other, and while acting initially friendly towards one another, alternate between the kitten acting friendly towards him and hissing and growling. The tom flips him over and bites his neck/throat, although doesn't seem to hurt him.

He's currently outside our door, yowling, and keeps coming back no matter how many times we scare him away. We can't tell what the hell is going in between the two. We think it might be just a dominance game, but certainly don't want to put him back outdoors knowing the tom might hurt him. We're at a loss.

What's /an/'s take on this? Any advice?

Sounds like a dominance thing, if the Tom wanted to kill it he would have by now I would think.

I would suspect so, but we're wondering why he's so insistent on trying to get to him if it's only to show him he's the boss. He's been at it for nearly half an hour.

Have the kitten kill his father.

It is the only way...

Take kitty to vets for checkup, and keep both cats separete. Better safe then sorry. You can slowly introduce them, it always takes time for cats like that to get over territory-sharing. Train them so that they find a "reward" when they are close to one another, like feding them together.

honestly... even if you dont plan on keeping baby cat, you should call a local shelter to see if you can get him fixed (AT LEAST HIM dad cat would profit from this also) most shelters are happy to fix feral cats as it cuts down on major over population! also dont give baby cat any more yuna! its to high in salt and can harm him

We're calling animal control in the morning (we can't, unfortunately, keep him due to housing rules), and bought him some kitten food to tide him over in the mean time. He needs medical attention we can't give him, as his ankle's getting more swollen as the night passes. He can barely walk right now.

On the plus side, the tom seems to have given up chase for the moment.

Good job, OP. It's nice to hear someone do something responsible for once. :)
