This thread is about Crows/Ravens !

Wtf do you know about them!?

Do they really live to 300 years?

Are they really one of the most intelligent birds?

Has anyone ever had a pet crow?

Ameircanfags are they a real pest?

What is something cool you've seen a crow do?

some ravens are fucking amazing

the ones in yellowstone would sit next to u (use to being fed) and were about the size of a small dog

i didn't try to pet it, but if i did... oh the times we would have had

There have been reports of ravens getting nuts and dropping them on the road and waiting for a car to run it over and crack it for them.

They are sooo smart!

In Australia ravens learned to kill Cane Toads which are usually poisonous by flipping them on their back stabbing the **** out of their throat (softest spot) and eating their insides which are not poisonous

Fuck they are cool

I did a report in high school on the common raven (corvus corax), and I love the little fuckers, so I'm fairly knowledgable about them.

No, they live a few decades. The record in captivity is 40 years.

They rank up there with African gray macaws. They have excellent memories and their talent for mimicry is nearly unmatched. They have also been proven to be able to count.

It's illegal to keep wild animals as pets in most places. You need to have a special license for it, and it's harder to get than an exotic animal license because the idea is to discourage people from capturing wild animals and keeping them as pets, for both the animal's welfare and to prevent the spread of disease.

Ravens mostly live in rural areas and tend to be more solitary than crows so they really never have the opportunity to be pests. Crows are more social and tend to favor urban/suburban areas but the only real concern is noise pollution (although feral parrot flocks in southern California easily have them beat in that regard) since they're not as numerous as pigeons, their shit is not as caustic, and they are less likely to nest in buildings than in trees.

Don't see them enough to see them do anything cool, but there is one story about a raven who lived near an area that was popular for filming action movie scenes who eventually learned to mimic the sound of an explosion.

Crows and ravens are awesome.

Some Caldonian crows were put in a room with some wire and a tiny basket that had a treat inside, and the basket was put in a bottle. They figured out how to brace the straight wire and bend it with their beaks so it was shaped into a hook, then used the hook to fish out the treat from the bottle.

As for the birds using cars to crack nuts open, not only did they learn to use the vehicles to get food, they also learned to only drop the nuts on crosswalks. When the light turned red they could walk out onto the road and collect the nuts without being in danger.

Lots of people have kept ravens and crows, even though it's discouraged and not exactly legal.

I don't think they're a pest at all. They can be noisy in large groups, but the same is true of all birds. Mostly they're just fun to watch. I've seen them chase hawks a lot.

Here's the New Caledonian crow tool experiment:

And the Japenese nut cracking crows:

I live in ruralish Australia, and there's a million magpies, currawongs and crows around. They're all beautiful.

-stuff

-I don't think so

-one of the most

-not me

-no, they eat the shit people throw on the ground; very usefull. seagulls are worse b/c they swarm shit... I'm pretty sure that, at the beach, seagulls would lay siege to a resurant if customers fed them. I saw a BK that had signs saying not to feed the birds... serious signs

-I've seen, on many occasions, a group of crows to battle with a hawk

Found one injured in my neighborhood. Caught him with a blanket. His wing was so badly broken, he'd never fly again. Kept him in a large dog kennel cage, fed him meal worms and other stuff(random leftovers).

He lived for a couple weeks I'd let him out of his cage and hop around the room(we kept him in a room away from the other animals)I was quite fond of him. We named him Mr. Crowley.

Well duh, which is one of the primary reasons we never allowed in near our other animals.

Also, didn't handle it directly. I'd shoo it back into his cage with a towel.

Crows are fucking awesome.

One frickin ambushed me one day, it just flew at my back and stabbed me as I walked from my car towards school.
I didn't get mad, just shocked at first but then I was like, "That crow's a total badass."

African parrots are the smartest bird on the planet. Can live up to the age fo 35 or so, too.

I've heard stories of someone who had a pet raven who knew when she was going to brush her teeth and would steal her toothbrush and then fly off only to drop it when it eventually became bored. I was never really sure if the raven was playing or trying to genuinely piss her off.

They can live for twice that, actually.

Dude, can't you just imagine a flock of Crows divebombing an owl while Ride of the Valkeryies is being played? Oh god, it would be epic.

Oh, another story about Crows. So I'm at a car shop that I interned at for a while, and I walked inside to grab some water. I walked out again within a couple minutes to get some fresh air, and there were literally hundreds of crows in the trees, on the lawn, on the building. Just all the fuck around. It was very cool. I just sat out there, and all of a sudden, as quick as they came, they all flew away. It was a pretty cool moment.

If you want to find the animal who is in cognitive abilities closest to humans, your best bet is a corvid. Just in the last few years we've heard of New Caledonian crows besting chimpanzees in toolmaking & use and spatial reasoning, magpies showing self-awareness, crow and scrub jays having theory of mind even to the point of learning to expect behaviors from others once they've learned them themselves. If we ever decide to uplift other species to complete sapience, I suggest we start with corvids - they'll be the easiest to pull off!
