I was thinking about buying a racoon, skunk, or opossum. And I know those are all wild animals that we see in our trashcans but I'd like to raise one by hand, because I'm tired of the dog/cat stuff. Any experiences with these animals as pets? And does anyone know the laws against (if any) them in California?

i had both a skunk and a racoon when i was younger but i lived in russia so laws werent an issue. i had the racoon since he was a baby and he was a JERK he bit scratched and yapped at everyone and hated being around people i wouldnt recomend them as pets. the skunk was much nicer we had his scent gland removed at a vet and he was very kind but not active or playfull somewhat like a cat.

Get a racoon. They can do some special services.

Seconding.

If you are serious about an exotic, get one that has been tamed through several generations, such as domesticated skunks. I know of no possum or raccoons that have been domesticated

raccoons suck. you can try to ignore it but they will do things like scratch and bite WAY more than good pets, and it's very unlikely that you'll be able to un-train them from their instincts of being a shitty little scavenger that will bite their loving, providing master's hand open to get something they want. and really, you shouldn't expect anything else from them, because that's what they're programmed to do to survive in the wild.

Is this a serious question or just a scam?

I checked, it's illegal in California nevertheless (at least it was in the year 2000): "It is illegal to possess a pet raccoon. There is a complicated process to apply for a prohibited animal permit. Contact the state department of wildlife." ( http://www.mnsi.net/~remocoon/regulats.htm )
