That's so sad. :(

I heard that the guy that took the picture got them out afterwards.

i heard something different. i heard that he poured water down the drain until the ducklings were pressed between the grate and the water. They then died a slow and drawn out death at the hands of an amateur photographer.

I heard it was boiling water, and the photographer ate the ducklings afterwards.

How did that one duckling make it across?

i know thats the saddest thing i think ive ever seen, the photographer had to have gotten the ducklings out, how could you not?

exactly.. and that one duck probably had the trait of having larger feet or better walking abilities.

My theory is that it was not stupid enough to jump down a storm drain.

I put a baby bird back in its nest a couple weeks ago (it was on the cement in front of a building in the city, it had no feathers or anything yet so it belonged in the nest) and 5 minutes later I started thinking I disrupted natural selection by putting the stupid bird back in the nest.

Didn't matter because it was on the sidewalk, dead, 3 hours later with one of its siblings, also dead. Then the next day a 3rd baby was dead on the cement. I think another bird was fighting for the nest.

If a mother bird smells human/predator on her babies she'll kill them. Thanks to your intervention, she murdered them all because you set the other one in the nest again.

not true, thats only what parents tell their kids so they wont touch sick birds and get bird flu

Not to mention that most birds have a shitty to non exist sense of smell.
[Well, some like Vultures have excellent sense of smell]

wut?

yes as was already said, not only is that NOT true, and the bird was absolutely NOT a vulture, I put on rubber gloves to attempt to protect myself and the bird. Anyway they all ended up dead and point is, I won't mess with birds and natural selection again.

this is just an old wife's tale, the best thing to do if you find a baby animal is return it to it's nest.
>> Anonymous
A lot of bird species naturally kill off some of their siblings for parental care.

if only most parents did this

Both wrong. If you see a baby bird, don't touch it unless to move out of immediate danger.
If you put it back in the nest, that's stupid. The parents may have kicked it out because it was sick, and if you put it back that would kill his/her remaining nestmates.

Ducks dont understand the concept of storm drains. they ARE however, hightly clever, just not smart.

i once saw a video of a mother duck that nested on someones roof. When the ducklings hatched she led them to the rain gutter, tossed them down. All of them rolled to a stop at the bottom, none were hurt.

Off they went, clever, not smart!
