Sorry, but... YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG!

Their life expectancy depends on how well you take care of them. If you do an adequate job of taking care of them they can live in captivity anywhere from 5-15 yrs.
Hermit crabs are NOT an easy keeper though. So be aware of their needs. They require a humid environment. Humidity of 80% and a temp. of 75.
They require a salt and fresh water pool. Use Aquarium Salt.
They need room. For a 10 gal aquarium have no more than 4 medium sized crabs. You will run out of room with that eventually so think big.
Sand needs to be about 4 inch deep for them to molt. You can use playsand available at Home Depot. However it's best to bake your sand before using it to avoid any bugs that may be in the sand.
You will need a heat source. An UTH is best.
Lid will need to be secure and capable of holding in humidity. A lid wrapped in saran wrap is OK but not at all pretty. Also be careful the crabs can't get in side the wrap. This happened to me on several occasions so be careful.
Light source: You'll need one that is low wattage so it doesn't bake your crabs. Some like to have a black light to simulate night and day.
