Research the breeders you're looking at buying from. Research the absolute FUCK out of them, until you know where they went to school and when they lost their virginity.
Speaking as someone who has kept Shepherds all their life, I can tell you that they are sound dogs, highly intelligent and very loyal and loving. Things go downhill if the breeder isn't a good one. Problems with the breed include hip displasure and fear biting. In Australia at least, much effort has been put in to getting rid of these faults, but all the same there are good breeders and there are bad ones.
Shepherds come in three body shape flavours: You have the traditional malanine, which is the large, powerful type you usually see on the other end of a copper's leash, you have the straight back, and you have the sloped back. The sloped back is extremely popular at the moment, which is brainless because all that effort has been put into getting rid of hip and back problems and they've turned around and breed them right back in. Stay away from the sloped back dogs, the ones with the cringe. There are individuals being put on show that are this side of being cripped. STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM THEM (Pic related). Go with the malanine, or else the straight-backed animals. They are much more likely to be physically sound.
