Do cats and dog menstruate? If they menstruate, do they leave blood stains everywhere, or do they lick it up?
>> Anonymous
Only when they're in heat, which is like once a year. So if they're fixed, no, they don't.

But do they leak blood all over the place when they do menstruate?

It's not like turning on a faucet, no, but it's usually significant enough to where some sort of diaper may be necessary.

Most domestic dogs go into "heat" twice a year for a period of three to four weeks, though some more primitive breeds only do it once a year. Just like with people, not every bitch will experience an identical cycle and some are more messy then others. Some are very good at keeping themselves clean to the point that the discharge is negligible, and some, for whatever reason, need human intervention to prevent them from leaving evidence everywhere they go.

Cats are much better at keeping themselves clean, but everyone in a hundred miles will be aware that she has gone into "heat" due to crying and other obnoxious behaviors. They will stay in that condition until they mate, but a prolonged "heat" can cause damage to their health.

Either way, have them spayed and you'll avoid the whole mess, including all the males that come knocking down your door.
