My friend from Japan said that they have a fish that can detect earthquakes and she couldn't think of what the english name was. She described it as looking like an eel. I'm thinking maybe hagfish or lampray? any thoughts?

They have regular ol' catfish in a tank in Tokyo Tower.

lungfish?

Its called black noise. The sound made by shifting earth before an earthquake. Sounds with such low frequency that humans can't hear them. Animals, especially ground animals like snakes, can hear it and react move away from the epicenter, or the coastline.

BTW, I'm pretty sure it's a catfish that's associated with quakes in japan, I don't know why though.

That looks like a hagfish. They're nasty scavengers; but if they can predict earthquakes, they're good for something.
