hey /ck/,
I hate these things! Ive lived in fear all my life of these things. I used to think they were mosquitoes but what the hell are they? And how do i get rid of em?
>> Anonymous
It's a crane fly. They're harmless.
>> Anonymous
actually very poisonous but dont have mouths big enough to bite us with.

That's not true fag.
Daddy long legs is what you are thinking of.
>> Anonymous
>>80382
I hate them too. I'm not certain how the hell such an odd and clumsy creature even exists. You'd think birds and such would pick them off when they jerk around in the air or near surfaces.
>> Anonymous
they are hilarious, like the retards of the air.
>> Anonymous
>>80395
That is a Daddy Longlegs. It's confusing because two different species have the same common name. I guess whoever thought it up couldn't tell an arachnid from an insect or something.
>> Anonymous
>>80395

You are thinking of the harvest spider, which has barely any venom, and it's weak.

lurk moar.

Daddy Longlegs (the kind pictured) have no venom. That is a myth.

harvestman, and it's not a spider (though it is an arachnid)

does anyone notice that he said /ck/?

Given than /an/ is usually overridden by tasty cats, dogs and rabbits, it's rather easy to mistake it for /ck/.

I had one of these fuckers haunt me for a good month in a greenhouse at work. All this time I thought it was a giant mosquito. This picture doesn't show it well, but these guys have a bright red color that scares the shit out of you as well.
>> Anonymous
>>80414
maybe the OP responds to being scared by eating the stimuls.
>> Anonymous
What bright red color? At least in Finland there's a lot of these things in summer and they are grey or black or something like that. They are clumsy and totally harmles, whatever they are. Huge, but do no harm. Normal mosquitoes are much more of a nuisance.
>> Anonymous
They are fairly easy to catch and it's fun to throw them into a spider's web and watch them get eaten.
>> Anonymous
>>80414
hah OP here i guess i post so much on /ck/ i didn't notice that one.

>>80427
glad i'm not the only one who hates em
>> Gunlord !.YMO7aNBcQ

THEY'RE 3X FASTER

>>80445
Damn right. I hate these retarded mosquito-wannabees. During summer here there's always tons of them, sitting on the wall of our house. I squash them with my shoes, catch them and throw them into spider webs. I even loaded a Air Soft gun with a few once, it became messy. BUt yeah, what I wanted to say is that I FUCKING HATE THESE THINGS.

looks like a Tipulidae (my pic is a female one, OP's looks like a male one)

totally harmless.

You all fail.

eat it
>> BearBait
motherfuckin' flying PUBES.
>> Anonymous
Around here (American Southwest) we call these things Candle Flies. They're big, clumsy flyers that seem to be giant, malformed mosquitos who think they're moths. I've never heard of these things being at-all dangerous.
They're all over outdoor lighting during summertime nights...
>> Anonymous
noob, they're skeeter eaters

they eat mosquitos
>> Anonymous
>>80645
you're thinking of a mosquito hawk. they're fatter and don't have as long of legs.
>> Anonymous
skeeter eater is correct, the kill skeeters so never kill one lol
>> Anonymous
Hah, sorry guys but the last few posts are mistaken.

OP's picture is a Crane Fly. "Skeeter Eater" and "Mosquito Hawk" are nicknames. Contrary to popular belief, they do NOT eat mosquitoes.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crane_fly

...I remember studying these guys in Entymology. You can clearly see from their mouthparts (under the microscope) that they can't eat much of anything. They only drink.
>> Anonymous
I hate these fuckers too, but it's pretty irrational seeing has how they are completely harmless.
>> Anonymous
fags, they kill skeeters, they dont eat them, but ive seen them kill them

clarification
<------
>> Anonymous
Is it true Crane flies have an average lifetime of like, 1 day? Hatch, mate, die. Crazy.
>> Anonymous

>>80684
same with mayflies, which might only live for a few hours. In fact, many insects spend the majority of their life as larva and nymphs, only becoming beautiful adults for the very last moments of their lives. You could say a cicada has a short adult life in comparison to the 17 years they spend as an underground nymph.
>> Anonymous
Around here they're called mosquito-killers. Keep em, it proves useful.
>> Anonymous
>>80821
Despite what you call them, they still don't kill mosquitoes!

>>80669is a type of spider. Note the number of legs. This is NOT a crane fly, as pictured by the OP. Note the number of legs in both cases...

down south, we calls em Skeeter Hawks. my dad always told me never kill em cause they ate mosquitoes. i still dont kill em, even tho i know they dont eat skeeters.
