Hamsters Anonymous
I want a hamster, but i also want to be able to play with it in the day time, and i would prefer if it slept during the night, can i make it think that day is night, and night is day in some way ? have any of you tried reverting a hamster to be day active ?

My brother had one that he would play with all day, and it would sleep all night, it eventually turned diurnal. I don't know if this works with all of them, or what.

It can really come down to the hamster. My family raised hamsters for a good 5 or 6 years, always keeping two (male and a female), letting them breed, and then picking the next two out of the lot.

They're not lazy creatures, if you wake them up and have them move about, usually they'll be receptive to the exercise and be active. Occasionally they'll just kinda sit around because they're too tired, but from my experience that doesn't happen very often.

I'll give you another piece of advice though: don't get a long hair unless you plan on grooming it yourself frequently. We only had bad experiences with them, they just smelled bad all the time because the urine and feces would get caught up in their hair easily. It also didn't help that the last long haired hamster we raised was a terrible bitch. Never wanted to be touched, and smelled bad all the time. Short hairs are much easier to raise.

I would say that don't worry about when they're sleeping. If you happen to pass by their cage and see them sleeping, don't wake them up just so they aren't sleeping during the day. Only do it when you want them to get some exercise outside their cage, or if you just happen to want to spend some time with them.

Get blackout curtains and a light box. Pretend your hamster has seasonal affective disorder, and it should be diurnal in no time.
