My kitten doesn't like being on my lap no matter how many times I try. This baffles me because he's a very sweet and affectionate cat otherwise.
Is there any way to get him used to it, or should I just give up?

Just give up. I've got 3 cats, one is a complete slut, and you can do whatever you like and it will just purr louder. Another is affectionate, but only on her terms, and will not suffer the indignity of being picked up. The last is a mean old bastard and basically wants his dinner and to be left alone. I've had them all for over 5 years, and their characters have not changed one bit.

tl;dr if they don't like it, they don't like it.

One caveat, yours is a kitten, when he's grown up and calmed down a bit, he might settle where previously he did not. Wait and see. Try and resist the temptation to put him on your lap, and definitely don't try and hold him there.

Also, /r/ pics of kitteh.

We have two cats, neither of them is what you'd call a lap cat. The other one is very happy to get picked up, but refuses to stay put if anyone holding him happens to sit down. The other one used to absolutely hate getting picked up, but now that she's over 13 years old, she has mellowed out and suffers us to carry her around when it's absolutely necessary. She on the other hand loves to sit or lay on anybody's chest when they are in bed, but would never even consider sitting on someone's lap.

Kittens are bundles of energy. Mine can be sweet and calm when he's sleeping, but when he's on the go, he doesn't want to stay in one spot. If he's otherwise affectionate, maybe he will be more open to lap-sitting when he mellows out.
