That's about it.

Do you own Great Danes yourself, op?

op here

beutiful dogs btw, I love great danes, but have not had the joy of owning one. I have had dogs all my life though, and currently i have a lab.

when i was growing up i had a saint brenard, it was one of the best dogs i have ever owned.

Great Danes are one of the best breeds to own. As long as you have the space and you can give them all the attention they want (which happens to be alot) then they are so worth it.
>> Anonymous
yea i got plenty of space, and even have a swimming pool.

do they enjoy the water?
>> Anonymous
OH NO.

Tobi, the tan one I own now, is terrified of water. He won't even go outside to pee if it's raining.
Max, the other one, was almost the same way, but a little less of a pussy.

Oh, unless you train them to be mean or neglect them, they are all pretty much pansies.

dang! my lab needs a swimming partner. I cant keep her out of the damn pool so i figure why the hell not have another dog to keep her company?!

maybe if i introduce a young puppy to water as soon as possible they wont be so shy about it...

That could work. Danes are really social and they need company, so he'd be a good freind to your lab.
I've heard of Dane dieing of loneliness before.

Your lab will wear out your Dane really quickly once he gets out of the puppy stage.

Apparently you should NEVER teach/allow your Great Dane to swim!

My sister just got a Great Dane puppy; he's the exact colouring of the OP pic and he's gorgeous, and such a great personality! Anyway, she did a lot of research into the breed before getting one, and, as she already has a Newfounlander (this breed loves the water!), she looked into Great Danes and swimming. This breed is very succeptable to bloat, which can result directly from swimming. Something to do with the high amount of activity in the water combined with their water intake...

Lol, I'm no expert, but this is what I've heard.

I've never heard of the medical effects that swimming could have on danes (>>252815); but I wouldn't doubt it.

However my two Danes loved swimming with me in the ocean and pool. Great damn dogs.

Also, be careful about their stomachs. If they eat to much and then run their stomachs will flip and they will be dead within the hour.

i had a dane/lab mix while growing up and she was sometimes alright w/the water, just that the lake we lived on was glacier fed so fairly cold.
