dear /an/
there is a large insect sitting on my window, it's head and mouth parts look like that of a housefly but it's abdomen and wings look like a hornet or something. What kind of creature is this? It's fly-face made me want to squish it, but it's bee-body made me want to leave it alone.

forgot to add that it doesn't have any stripes or bright scary colors or anything, it's mostly dark brown and it's about an inch long
I also live in north america, so hopefully that narrows down the possible species

Wait, that looks like some kind of fly. Is that some Batesian mimicry going on there?

Probably. They're common.

It's a male honeybee. Good news everyone! the males don't sting.

BUMP FROM PAGE 10

I've also seen these numerous times outside, and have no idea what they are. As OP says, it's got a fly like head, but long wings like a wasp or dragonfly. The thorax is sort of thick, and the abdomen is thin like a shorter version of a dragonfly's.
