We used to do the same, we've had generations on generations of cats, and this is what the vets used to recommend to us too. But. We got a new cat about 4 years ago after a decade cat-hiatus, and she just absolutely loved her dry food, she'd eat an entire bowl of it everyday, plus her 2 feedings, and she'd ask for more. She got to be pretty fat (indoor-only cat to boot). Vet then told us that leaving out a bowl of dried food was in fact not the right idea, especially for an indoor cat, and especially one who seemed to like food this much, and to stick to the twice a day little cans of good quality wet food - she should get all the nutrition she needs from that and won't go hungry when you're not there. He specifically stated wet food, apparently dried food is a much higher calorie intake, so much so it's not appropriate for a cat who isn't out and about constantly - let alone free-feeding from a constantly topped up bowl.
She very much misses her beloved dry food, but since we've cut it out she's a much healthier weight now and her bowel movements are generally much better. She gets a little dried food occasionally as a treat, and a very small amount.
It's not necessary to do this for all cats, but if your cat is getting fat and you keep topping up the bowl, it's probably a hint that you need to cut that shit out.
