Here's the article text:

Bus drivers have nicknamed a white cat Macavity after it has started using the No 331 several mornings a week.

The feline, which has a purple collar, gets onto the busy Walsall to Wolverhampton bus at the same stop most mornings - he then jumps off at the next stop 400m down the road, near a fish and chip shop. The cat was nicknamed Macavity after the mystery cat in T.S Elliot's poem. He gets on the bus in front of a row of 1950s semi-detached houses and jumps off at a row of shops down the road which include a fish and chip shop.

Driver Bill Khunkhun, 49, who first saw the cat jumping from the bus in January, said: "It is really odd, the first time I saw the cat jumping off the bus with a group of passengers. I hadn't seen it get on which was a bit confusing.

"The next day I pulled up on Churchill Road to let a couple of passengers on. As soon as I opened the doors the cat ran towards the bus, jumped on and ran under one of the seats, I don't think any of the passengers noticed.

"Because I had seen it jump off the day before I carried on driving and sure enough when I stopped just down the road he jumped off - I don't know why he would catch the bus but he seems to like it. I told some of the other drivers on this route and they have seen him too."

Since January, when the cat first caught the bus he has done it two or three times a week and always gets on and off at the same stops.

Passenger, Paul Brennan, 19, who catches the 331 to work, said: "I first noticed the cat a few weeks ago. At first I thought it had been accompanied by its owner but after the first stop it became quite clear he was on his own.

We should breed pets for intelligence and not for looks.
Take the offspring of this cat and cross it with similar smart animals until they are as smart as humans.

I wonder if the cat takes the bus back to his house?

>>77877
I think a cat could talk if it was smart enough. They can make enough vocal sounds to mimic human speech, they just don't have the intelligence to do so.

Cat's can't make enough sounds to sound human, and it owuld take thousands of generations to breed cats to be near enough our little corner of sentience to have a chat.
Besides some of the greatest aspects of animals is that they can't talk. All communication and bonding is physical, through body language, and stuff like that.
>> Anonymous
Now wait for the news of someone brutally murdering the cat for kicks later on.

Besides all that, human control of breeding only leads to retarded animals, cows, dogs, sheep, etc etc. Cats are smart because humans have had very little influence on their breeding.

>>77944
Human control of breeding leads to stupid animals because that's one of the goals. Dumb animals are easier to control.

Only a very few animals are not bred to be stupid, and I can't think of any where people have tried to make them smarter.

Yep that's why cats are the best because you can't control them.

If it wants to ride the bus down to the chippie for some grub it's gonna do that. If it wants to claw your furniture it's gonna do that too. If it wants to take a dump in front of the litterbox it will.

Cats are great for all the things they can't be made to do unless they want to.

would you really want a pet that could talk though? that could get mad at you, and tell things to others?

it wouldn't be much like a pet, more like a human child, and that would be fucking weird

You seem to be ignoring the fact that sentience & vocal cords =/= ability talk. There has to be a pre-evolved ability to process and produce complex sound-based communication with a grammar and a flexible vocabulary. Just a minor genetic defect can render a perfectly intelligent human being unable to communicate via speech. There is nothing to suggest cats have pre-evolved even the rudiments of actual language.

If we are ever to produce talking cats, it's going to take some serious genetic engineering. A good place to start would be studying what makes animals with complex vocabularies and grasp of grammar able to process language like that.

I think that is whats wonderful with animals, the fact that you have a physical bonding. That relates us to the primitive part that we all have and, as social animals, we feel complete with it. Also, intelligence can't be the same from animal to animal (including humans).

That kitty is the proof of that :)
