Okay, I'm hoping you guys might have some input, because my roommate and I are baffled.

My roommate's cat (see picture) has recently been grooming/scratching a lot more. Initially, we thought it might be fleas, but we're starting to think otherwise, because she's developed bald patches along her neck and back, the one on her back going so far as to start bleeding.

Unfortunately, we're both pretty dead broke right now, and the cheapest vet clinic is fifty bucks just to walk in the door. Any ideas as to what this might be?

Has anything around the house changed? Such as using a new cleaning solution, new carpet, new furniture, someone started smoking, etc etc?

It could be an allergy, especially if the skin is red and flaky on the bald spots. Are the bald spots round? It could be ringworm.

You could purchase some cheap unscented baby shampoo and give him a bath (it is sometimes cheaper and gentler than kitten shampoo) to get any chemicals out of his fur and ease some of the soreness. If it looks like ringworm (do a google search for pics), you could try some athlete's foot medicine on it until you can get him to a vet.

It doesn't look like ringworm.

I suppose an allergin is possible but I don't know what could be causing it, we've been living here awhile and this is a recent thing. Nothings changed. The only new thing is that she likes the bathtub for some reason, hanging out in it and stuff.

Maybe residue from soap or shampoo? Or conditioner?

It could be. You could rinse the skin really well and just keep it clean, keep her from scratching at it further, and keep her the hell out of the bathtub till it clears up. You could give it the "infection test" with some hydrogen peroxide: If a bit of peroxide dabbed on the bald spots foams up, it is most likely an infection, rather than an allergic reaction.

If its allergies, just about anything could cause it. A treat you gave her, something she brushed against, even something that you touched and then petted her afterwards.

Cat acne?

Dunno. Few weeks ago someone posted the same thing and a lot of people suggested it could be cat acne.

its very unlikely to be the bathtub.most cats go in the bath because they have irritated skin and its cool for them, and less annoying than laying on carpet.id let your cat stay in there if she wants to.mine have done it from time to time.

Dont make the cat suffer for your loserdom.

Take the cat to the vet. Its probable that they'll have a payment plan available.

Then get a job and pay him, troll

I already called around. There are no vets in this area with a payment plan, asshole.

Good job assuming I haven't tried, you dickhead.

You shouldn't have a pet unless you have the means to take care of it. This means vet bills too. Don't you ever watch animal cops? People get their pets taken away for shit like this all the time.

Scrape the money together, take care of it. No one but a vet can help you.

That sounds like an allergy to me as well.

A lot of people pick up strays, and in my opinion, in poor house > in alley running from korean restaurant owners.

I had the cat when I was forced to move out and lost everything.

Don't make judgements unless you know whats going on.

But its OK, we found out what it was BY TAKING HER TO THE VET I MIGHT ADD, and we're taking care of it, despite the fact we can't afford it.

Thank you to the people who were trying to help.

Fuck you to the people who were not.

use womens body was on it, the moisturizers in it will help clean/moisturize the skin until you can afford to vet it up

it sounds like that your cat has mange, now I have seen a lot of shows on animal planet like animal precinct and animal cops, and I would have to say that it does sound like the cat has mange, as for not being able to afford veterinary bills, I am afraid that the humane society might be the only option, since they can treat the cat, but you would have to relinquish ownership of the cat, but it may be the only choice you have, if not, then it can be seen as cruelty if that doesn't get looked after.
