Budgies Anonymous
Anybody have any experience with these fellas? I'm considering getting a pair of males after I move. Can they learn to be very socialized birds?

They are scared shitless of you most of the time. They don't like you petting them, and they don't talk, but chirp.

I hate them.

If you get a hand-raised 'keet, and don't keep it around any other birds, the little guy will think you're a part of his flock and will bond with you.

I have a hand-raised budgie I got for $50, but he was worth it. He is very friendly and loves all humans, and can both whistle and talk. The only negative is the colossal amount of poop generated.

It's a bit paradoxal.

The more time you spend with them, the more fun and socialised they get, the more they love you... -but- the more they depend on you for attention and the more attention seeking they get.
If you get two, just expect them to be around for fun, they won't want to socialize with you, but primarily with eachother. They'll still be cute, cuddle eachother, chirp along with your music but they probably won't give a shit about what you have to offer, lol.

SO if you have the time, effort and will to dedicate yourself purely to one budgie it can be an awesome friend, companion and very amusing to play with.

So true. I think it's impossible to tame more than one parakeet. I've tried everything, from offering treats to placing my hand in the cage daily for fifteen minutes.

birds can fly.

yet we cage them.

the injustice is tasteful

If you want them to be socialized and talk, you have to get separate cages for them. My grandparents had a budgie, Peter, who would come when his name was called, mimic random noises from the tv and also give you a "kiss" by pressing its beak against you when asked.

IT really depends where you get them from. If their breeder or whatever held them at a young age and tryed socializing them. Most petcos all the birds will be scared, its like getting a pet from the flea market...it won't be very happy.

Find a decent breeder if you want it to give a shit about you

Pretty good birds. Depends on how you raise them as well. I had one a long ass time ago and it use to sing to my moms music.. It was also egotistical. He LOVED looking at himself 24/7.

Yes, but it's crucial that you find a good breeder who ensures his/her birds are healthy and socialized from an early age. Most pet stores sell sick or at least very under socialized birds. Google "budgie breeder [your state]" .

Are you aware that having two will make them less social towards you? On the other hand, if you're at work all day you're better off with two of them. Even so, If you can aquire them from a good breeder who's been socializing them right along, and your work with them every day, a pair can certainly bond to you though they'll still be "more" bonded with eachother.

budgies will argue with each other and themselves for hours. they can be hand tamed and sometimes even learn to talk, but even if they don't they're at least pretty to look at.

and you'll need to get used to this sound:
chirp chirp chirp chirp chirp chirp chirp chirp chirp chirp chirp chirp chirp chirp chirp AWK chirp chirp chirp chirp chirp chirp

etc.

follow-up: I prefer something a little bigger, personally. I have a pair of male Cockatiels and they're awesome.
