/an/, I want to get a pair of mice. Is it okay to use an aquarium and if so, how many gallons should it be?

If not mice, then what aquarium-safe rodent could I get? Syrian hamster, gerbils?

I would say 10 gallon for a pair of mice or dwarf hamsters, or a single Syrian hamster. Remember that male mice absolutely stink and -cannot- be kept together.

10 gallon is generally a good size for small rodents-- not too small like a 5.5, and plenty of room to put houses, food bowls, etc. 15 or 20 would be even better if you've got the money and would like to keep more than a pair.

Also, yes, aquariums (or terrariums- the cheaper version) are fine for smaller rodents. The only thing you have to watch out for is, since there's no wire sides, the ventilation is poorer than regular cages. So, you'll have to keep the tank away from windows/sunlight, and in an air conditioned room to make sure they're getting enough air.

Unfortunately, it's very hard to find cages with bar spacing small enough that mice and dwarf hamsters won't slip though, so most people choose aquariums. I've had no problems so far.
