cat problem (tl;dr, might take a couple posts) Anonymous
Hey /an/, this is my cat.

She's a stray I found pregnant on the street. After she had her kittens, and they were all given out to good homes, I decided she needed to be taken to the vet.

See, originally I had assumed someone had abandoned her because she was pregnant, as when I found her she reacted as if she had been fed by humans before, but had been hit by them. For the first few months I had her, she would pull her head away or meow like she was scared when I tried to pet her. Eventually, by reassuring her, she grew to trust me, and most people who come to my apartment, and now usually sleeps on top of me (Is that a bad thing?"

However, she never gained weight no matter how much she ate, and she had started throwing up her food. I had taken her to one vet several months ago, but the only thing he found wrong with her was ear mites. He said it was "good she was skinny" which I bought until a segment of a tape worm fell out of her, and she started throwing up daily.

The new vet said I had gotten rid of her ear mites, and that aside from the tapeworm, she was in perfect health. However, he gave her a full checkup. Took blood, and gave her three shots. A rabies shot, a feline leukemia + FIV shot, and something called "FVRCP FIRST VAC". He also slathered something on her back calle Profender which is supposed to take care of any internal parasites, and fleas.

The problem is, since I brought her back, she hasn't wanted to move. At all. When she came out of her carrier, I poured her fresh water and food, and she ate and drank, but after that she just walked around the house looking for a spot to go to sleep in, picked a chair, and went to sleep. There she stayed for three hours, until she came into my room, climbed onto my bed, and curled up next to me. There she has remained for the past five hours, not wanting to move at all. I picked her up once to try to cut the band-aid from her leg where they drew blood, but when I picked her up, she meowed like she was scared, so I let her back down, and she curled back into a ball. She won't eat, she almost completely unresponsive to stimuli, and she isn't displaying any of her normal traits.

Vet's closed now. Should I be worried, or is this normal? The vet also mentioned that he wasn't going to give her shots all at once, as that could cause her to have a fever, but the nurses were the ones that gave the shots, and the bill reflects them having given her all of the shots.

Picture from when she was pregnant.

It sounds like she might just be not feeling well from the shots, or possibly she's still stressed out from all the unfamiliar people and the trip to the vet's office. It's tough to tell - it's entirely possible the vet techs screwed up and gave her all the shots at once, which made her feel out of sorts. Keep a close eye on her, and if you really feel like she might be in danger, take her to the emergency vet. Yeah, they're expensive, but I'd rather have a $200 vet bill on my credit card and a healthy pet than a full bank account and a dead cat.

Keep us updated!

I'm pretty sure now she has a fever. She feels more warm to the touch than normal. And she's behaving much the same as the last sick cat I took care of (one of her kittens, which recovered after three days.) The techs probably did give her all the shots at once.

All I can think to do right now is try to keep her warm and comfortable, and keep offering her food.

I know. She just usually doesn't sleep for more than four hours at a time, and is more alert than this. I usually have to tip-toe to the bathroom when I get up in the middle of the night.

And she's still sitting at the bathroom door by the time I'm done.

Right now though, she barely perks her ears up, and squints her eyes open when I move the mattress around.

Give her some time. Both the physical and psychological stress surely makes her behave differently than normally. Very few pets like going to the pet, and she might have temporarily lost her trust in you.

My cats act pretty much the same way after going to the vet. It may also be a reaction from losing the parasites in her system.

You can expect them to be very lethargic after going to the vet, and also a little sore sometimes. If it lasts, definitely take her back to the vet just to be sure.

As for sleeping on top of you, that's absolutely fine. If the only internal parasite she had was the tapeworm, then the only way you could become infected would be if you ingested the egg.. So you're safe as far as that goes. And yes, she is a beautiful cat : ) Good luck!

Give her some time but don't leave her alone and ensure that she has plenty of water.

Grind her up into a thick paste, pour her in a cup filled with ice, and then drink your Cat-slushy to absorb her strength.

She's doing a little bit better now. I got her to eat just now. She lifted her head up, and her eyes were wide open -whereas before when she opened her eyes, she wouldn't open her right eye.

She started making a motion with her mouth like it was dry or sticky or something, so I brought her water bowl to her. She wouldn't drink. So I brought her food bowl to her, and she started eating.

She ate, re-positioned herself, and went back to sleep. I think now she'll be okay, and I may have worried too much.

It's refreshing that you care enough about your animal to not only notice that she was sluggish, but also to worry about it.

Most pets act a bit out of it after a vet visit that involves shots, especially so after being treated for parasites. I'd feel pretty nasty if I had a bowel full of tapeworms and I got a prescription for diluted poison to kill them. As long as your kitty still eats and drinks, then you should be fine. I would call your vet in the morning to see if they DID give her all the shots at once, or if they just charged you so that the others are just quick come-in-get-a-shot-and-leave sort of thing.

Females of any walk of life will get fatter after birthing its next generation of kin. It's nature. It works, and it's fucking disgusting.

Oh, and a final update. She's pretty much back to her normal self now, meowing, climbing on everything, wanting to play and such.

I know this may be stupid to ask but did they put your cat under (anesthesia) to do the check up or any of that?

some cats I know they have to do this (cuz I have one, he would end up seriously hurting someone if he was not put under).

if it was just a simple check up with the shots than she is most likely just feeling shitty.

have to imagine they are getting similar amounts of liquid intramuscular that would make you feel uncomfortable and even in pain (depending on the area) depending on the area (also depending on the fluid used, but most use simple solutions because of ease).

Also, AFAIK, most intramuscular injections are done with a 25g or lower (It may be different depending on the vet), and that size can make some people feel pain, so I can only imagine it must hurt like a bitch for a cat.

Funny my cat is so damed tame he doesn't react at all when the vet does anything to him. He doesn't even try to run away and just wants to be pet when he's afraid, and he's completely back to normal when I bring him home.
Nicest kitty in the world :)

I had a cat that was so damned lazy and fat he wouldn't even get out of the cat carrier when we brought him to the vet. The tech tried to pour him out of it but she gave up and just gave him his shots inside the carrier.
