The pic pretty much describes my situation. I need help. My cat, (an orange tabby, about 4 years old) has developed this bad habit of scratching herself until she's bleeding. Shes got scabs all over her, she washes constantly (Neurotically, would be the best word.) and won't stop.

I haven't taken her to a vet yet, but I wondered if anyone on /an/ had any suggestions.

Take her to a vet.

Since I'm assuming she hasn't always done this, she's probably allergic to something. Did you recently change her food? That's usually what sets it off.

There are soothing sprays you can get at most pet stores to help calm them (some cats overclean themselves because they're nervous). Or get her one of those big collars so she can't lick herself. In any case, it probably won't get better until you see a vet.

Thanks. We just moved house, so it might be nervousness...but I'll take her to the vet just the same.

Thanks /an/

You have an emo cat.

It really is, more than likely, the new house. Moves freak cats out really bad. They like stability more than children do. My cat obsessively washes himself too, but he doesn't scratch like that.

The vet is still a good idea, though.

Try asking the vet about a medication called Amytriptalene. Its for anti-anxiety.I have two cats with this problem and they get a half of this everyday and they don't lick their fur off. Of course this isn't necessarily your cats problem but I would check on it anyway. Also getting them to take it is loads of fun too.

Amitriptyline is also a great sleeping med. Take one and you'll sleep the next night like an anesthetized baby. Take two and you won't wake up until the next evening. Yay.
