Hi /an/,

I have two dogs that are very entertaining (see pic) but I am allergic to them. Specifically, if they lick my hands, it raises blisters within an hour or so. The same happens, although less often, if I pet them.

Do you know of any trick to minimizing this? Other than "don't let them lick your hands", I'm already doing all I can in that department. :(

You could always try to get shots to build up your immune system towards the saliva.

Does that actually work? It sounds like voodoo, since generally you gain allergies through sensitization reactions... right? I mean, before I spent a year working with birds, I wasn't allergic, and now I am.

It's funny that we work to breed shit like this out of our dogs, but not out of our people.

I'm sorry about your allergies. Unfortunately I don't know enough to help you, but I do know that food additives can cause hypersensitivity and allergies in humans.

You need to check if this applies to you.

It may be a psychological problem even - women have been known to become physically allergic to abusive partners, breaking out in blisters as well. I don't think this is the case here though. :)

Cool dogs, BTW. Talk to some GPs about your condition.

The women part probably doesn't apply to me, because of y chromosome, penis, etc. Otherwise, interesting.

My GP said, "If I had a dollar for every time I said 'you need to get rid of your dogs' and the patient said 'no, I like them', I wouldn't have to be a doctor anymore."

There are... call them "eugenics" organizations that, if you and a potential spouse give them blood samples, they'll tell you whether one or both of you are carriers of some deadly gene or other. So if you both have a recessive lethal gene, like Tay-Sachs, they recommend that you adopt children instead of fathering/bearing them.

I don't think we do that for allergies because except for life-threatening ones, they're mostly just a nuisance.
