Soup /an/, I'm moving into my fiancé's apartment in the next week or so, but I have a problem. He has two cats. One is young and half-psychotic and will chase, play and/or destroy anything that moves. The other is older and more apt to sleep in the closet all day. I have two pet rats that I absolutely adore and cannot leave behind. I have a very distinct feeling that the young cat will terrorize my rats until they have heart failure. Is there anything I can do to deter the cat from going near them?

TLDR; I think this cat is going to fuck with my rats when I move in. :( What do I do.

Pic related, it's the young cat finally sleeping after wearing himself out by chasing his tail for 2 hours straight.

cats are better anyway. Feed the rats to the cats. I have one cat and our roommates have two rats. We actually built a door on the basement stairs so the cat couldn't terrorize them. If you have an extra room, put the rats in there. OR get a table exactly the same length and width as the bottom of their cage and put it somewhere where the cats couldn't jump on top ofit

Purely personal experience, BUT.

My rats were never skittish enough to be bothered by my cats. In fact, the cats learned pretty quickly not to stick their faces close to the cages for fear of grabby rat hands.

My guess is that unless you have some pretty poorly adjusted rats, you're worrying way too much. The only real danger will be if the cat is adamant enough to attempt knocking the cage over. Just make sure it's 100% secure.

My cats learned pretty quick that if you go near the rat cage you get chomped. So long as your cage is secure enough, his cats ought to do the same.

Yeah, this cat likes to climb and jump on things, I'm afraid he'll get on top and try to stick his paws through - then again maybe he'll get stuck and learn his lesson.

Thanks for the advice guys. I feel better now, lol.

If your rats are anything like mine then the cats will learn to leave them alone. My GF had three cats and i had two rats (hooded) when we got a place together. The cats would all sit around the rat cage staring in, scared to get anywhere close to the rats. Finally the male cat worked up the courage to get close to them. The second he did it the oldest rat had two hand fulls of cat whiskers. After that they wouldn't even go in the same room as the rats anymore.
