Check any houseplants you may have to see if there's bite marks on the leaves or etc. Has the cat thrown up today? Even if those signs aren't present, it could very well be a reaction to something. Many plants disagree with kitties.
Is it an outside cat? If so, there's no telling what they might have got into; could've been a fight with a neighbor cat, or maybe it was stung by an insect. Also, while uncommon, it could be a bad tooth infection -- it'll need to get removed (this happened to a cat of mine). In any case, if the swelling doesn't go down in a day, I'd take the cat to a vet.
