My ferrets are driving me fucking insane.
Since I've moved to this new room the only place they shit is right where my feet go when I use the computer and right under a door. They refuse to use any of the litterboxes that they've used before and instead shit and piss in the messiest places possible.
They also have found the need to dig through furniture and have successfully ripped the formica off of another desk and proceeded to pull chunks of fluffy particle wood material out.
How do i stop these habits before I have to get rid of them for the sake of my own sanity?

/an/ stopped being /an/ a long time, ago. It's pretty much /catfag/, now.

I'm afraid I can't help you, since I've never had such issues with my ferrets, nor know anybody who has. Sounds like they're freaking out from the move.

Keep them in a cage.

There's this thing called a cage. Keep them in it til they settle down.

Im think theyre just upset because of the move and the only way they can show you their distress is by pissing you off. Dont take it out on them, though. just try to think of ways to get them more confortable or make this room look kinda like the old room they were in. And since this is a ferret thread, bump for some cute Ferret pics. ^^ Im going to buy one next week

What? You must not come here often. Sometimes there are several ferret threads in one day. And if anything, an has become /rat/.

OP, you must have a ferret cage. If not, get a nice big one with lots of toys and places to hide, and throw their asses in there. You can't just let them run around all day... they're not like cats and they will never truly be litter box trained.

The only way to stop them from shitting on the floor is to keep an eye on them, and when they start backing up you know what they're going to do. Pick them up and put them on their litter box. You could also try putting a litter box in those new places they prefer, but that doesn't always help.

Ferrets destroy shit. You should have done more research before you got them. A cage is also your answer for this problem.

As someone whos had ferrets.... pretty fucking sure OP has a cage. No idiot would own ferrets and not have a cage....

>>341686was on the right track.

Watch them whenever they are out. When you see them backing up to take a shit, pick them up and place them in the litter box. This is going to be a huge pain, because ferrets will be sneaky about their shitting once they know you hate where they're doing it.

This, however, may just not work altogether and they'll probably just destroy your shit. We lost remotes, controllers, and whole sections of carpets to our ferrets. Frankly, i'm fucking amazed they were ever domesticated in the first place. Cute, yes. Good pets, no.

Ferret owner chiming in:

When you first wake them up for playtime, keep them in the cage for a few minutes, usually they shit very soon after waking up.

Now, go to the pet store and buy a large bottle of either Nature's Miracle or Simple Solution. These are natural enzyme cleaners that break down poo/pee odor. Treat the areas where you don't want to the ferrets to shit at least once or twice. Now pick the spots (you'll never get them to just use ONE spot) you want them to poop and put a litter box there, or a 1" think pile of news paper, and put a bit of poop on it so they get the idea. When they back up to shit, give them a lick of a treat (ferretone or somethin') AS they're shitting and pretty soon they should learn what to do.

As for the tearing apart the furniture, well some furnishing are just not ferret-compatable. Mine did the same thing to an old mattress. Your best bet is to buy furniture that feels solid... like there's no hollow area behind the cloth for them to dig into. Spraying the areas with Bitter Apple or Phooey works with some ferrets too.

It also sounds like they're bored. You need to give them toys, or "enrichment", including stuff to dig in. You can take a paper bag, fill it with plastic bags, and toss a few treats in the bottom for a cheap toy. Gather some bags and boxes, fill them with safe stuff for the ferrets to explore, like crumpled balls of news paper, balled-up worn-out socks, etc. Take the time to make 6 or so of these enrichment items, and give 2 of them to your ferrets each play time. They usually find shallow pans of water pretty interesting too. (of course "interesting" to a ferret means they'll spend 4-5 minutes with it before getting bored)
