Dry food, wet good? Brand?

I just adopted a siamese(mix) from my local shelter and don't know what to feed it. It's eating IAMS 1 year old +, chicken.

The cat is 8 mos old but the lady that attended me said to feed it adult food. Also, pretty sure IAMS donated a lot of food to them and think they are biased.

I filled out the papers today and going to pick it up tomorrow. I have to stop by petsmart tomorrow to buy the litter, litterbox, scooper, some toys, dishes, but I'm still wondering about food.

It's a female and pretty sure I'm going to call it Sammy.

Just check the back of the bags for a food with more protein and meat as a main (first ingredient), and slowly wean her on to it. Try to avoid corn and by-products. My boy just get 9 Lives and he's healthy, but it's a lot of cereal base and there's a lot of premium foods that could be better for your cat, you could probably just ask a manager at petsmart for suggestions. I personally am not a fan of Iams, either.

You should always have dry food, but wet food is good as a once-a-day thing. Overfeeding wet food can speed tooth decay. Strangely, every cat I've known has disliked fish flavors, so maybe start off with a few cans of chicken flavors just in case.

Congratulations on your siamese, the cute cross-eyed fuckers. They are extremely quirky but loving cats.

Petsmart bitch, checking in.

I use Blue Buffalo Spa Select dry food for all three of my cats. Oldest is a Maine Coon mix, female, bout seven years. Second is a big chubby shedding-like-crazy shorthair, bout six years. Last is a year-and-a-half-old black and white shorthair, female. The older two eat the Weight Management because they both need to lose a few pounds. Babygirl used to eat Indoor Chicken variety, but I switched her to Salmon and Rice because it has higher calories and she's a hyperactive little spaz.

For an eight-month old cat, I'd say adult food is fine since she's already eating adult Iams, but as noted, Iams is not the best stuff out there. If she seems at all skinny, even for Siamese, I'd get her a bag of the kitten formula first, use that up, then transition her back to adult Indoor or regular Adult, once she's about ten months old at least. Then again, kitten food won't hurt her when she's a year old either. Up to you and your budget.

Blue Buffalo does make several varieties of wet canned food, which my two older cats do love to eat, but I give them only a can each about twice a week, because as noted, it doesn't help at all with dental care. Helps keep their water intake up, though, which is very important for a cat of any age, and especially geriatric cats.

My younger cat never really took to wet food, but she has a water fountain to herself, and doesn't seem to mind in the least.

:3 Cute kitty. If you've got any other questions, feel free to ask.

Enjoy your really loud BAAAAAWWWW noises. My cat hollers like a Siamese but isn't.

Only ever met one Siamese and it was adorable. I was at a cat shelter looking for a missing pet (it turned up of its own accord later on) and the siamese was loose and just fell in love all over me, purring and rubbing up against me. Broke my heart that I couldn't take it back with me too. Sweet cat.

Yeah, Sammy was vocal. Although, she's not a pure siamese. She does look like one, but you can tell she's mix by the her color. I'll post pic tomorrow along with what pet food I end up getting.

What are people's opinion on Evo brand cat food?

I was reading a site of vegan reporting bad things. With some cats dying. I don't think a 16lbs bag for ~$30 is expensive since it's only one cat. So, that's not a downside for me.

I adopted a siamese cat from a petsmart as well. They suggested Nutro Natural Choice indoor Cat Formula. Within a month she went from 5 1/2 to 7 1/2 pounds. Her fur looked very healthy and lush. I switched her to the same brand , but weight management formula and after almost 2 months, it looks like she's lost some weight. Her fur looks less good, but still good nonetheless... and I can tell she doesn't enjoy the weight management formulas as well.

Petsmart often seems to have sales on the nutro brand as well. like $20 for the big bag.

Apparently eating the type of food you find at the grocery store is like eating at mcdonalds everyday.

It's good stuff. Vegans hate anything with meat in it, so I'd avoid such biased sources.

Funny fucking story.

OP here, got home from the shelter around 5pm (est) and the cat seems relaxed. Got over the timidity pretty quick.

So I go to the store that is literally about 2 hours from my house. I went there around 11 AM (est) because I commute to college and it's about 20 minute away from my college one way.

I buy a 6.6 pound bag, the smallest they have, to see if he likes it. I already have a sample of Iams, so I was going to use that to intergrate the Innova Evo throughtout a week or so. So I buy the bag and leave the place. And I left the bag of food in the roof of the car and didn't realize it until classes were over and I was already half way home.

Fuck.

D'aww ... Cute half-mustache .. If I had a camera I'd show you guys a pic of my youngest, the black-and-white girl. ... Her name is 'Stache. ... Yes. With the apostrophe. She has the most perfect mustache ever.
... Anyway. Evo, unfortunately, isn't at my store yet, so I can't really give much help there. I wish it would, though, because with as many people asking about it as there are, it sounds like a good brand.

You're right. Look at the ingredient list, like
>>217480
said. The first thing you see in most 'grocery' brands is either a corn product or a rice product. "Brewers" rice is even worse than plain old 'rice', being comprised of hulls and chaff as well as actual peices of rice. "Corn gluten meal" > "corn meal" > "whole ground corn" ... Gluten meal is the highest-protein part of the kernel, while "whole ground" means that large amounts of fibrous skin and sometimes even husk can be in the food, which is highly indigestible in cats.

It's like eating a pound and a half of food, of which at least half passes right through you into the toilet. That's why in a grocery brand like Friskies or Meow Mix dry foods, the bag suggests about a cup to a cup and a half of food per day for the average adult cat, versus Blue, Evo, or even Nutro Natural Choice, which suggest between a half-cup to a cup per day.

The more nutrition per bite, the less you have to feed on a daily basis .. The less poop out the hind end, the healthier your cat, and the easier on your budget.

If you want to get a fat cat with diabetes, calculus and gingivitis, then go ahead and feed him with nothing but dry food.

If you want a perfecly healthy kitty with good teeth, feed him mainly wet food, fresh meat (preferrably heart or tongue) at least once a week and only give dry food as occasional treats.

It really is that simple. Of course to pick the right wet foods you need to know a bit more. Also, make sure your cat gets enough of the right fatty acids and taurine. Avoid foods with lots of starch, keep plenty of fresh water available and remember that cats are usually lactose intolerant.

I hate it when vegans don't feed their pets meat!
it's so stupid, I myself choose to not eat meat but my animals have severely different diet needs than me so of course i feed them meat!
Just because animals like cats and dogs can be omnivores doesn't mean they should be vegan! they need meat!
humans are meant to eat meat to, but they don't have to. I CHOOSE to eat the way I do, my animals eat whats good for them as well as what they prefer.

GRAA!
(please excuse the rage)

Factoid: Siamese are the only cats that get red-eye in flash photography like humans, unlike other cats which get bright blue-green high-beams

>>Just because animals like cats and dogs can be omnivores

No. Dogs are omnivores. Cats are not, can not and will never be be omnivores. Their entire digestive system is based on meat. They can not live on plants. Feeding a cat with vegan food is proof positive you have left the realm of reason for good. If you can't feed your cat meat for any reason, then DON'T TAKE A CAT!

OP here

>>218042
It has a certain ring to it, but it's a female cat.

>>218044
I tried playing the flashlite game when I make the cat chase the light but I think it's still pooped from surgery (got spayed 2 days ago) and her eyes did look red when the light hit her head.

She didn't let me sleep yesterday. She was 'meowing' all night. She shuts up when I start petting her.

Since I lost the Innova Evo bag (see a couple post up) I bought Wellness. Which I had heard good things of.

I will take the wet food thing into consideration. I don't know if I'll put her in a full can food diet, but I'll mix it in every now and then to get a good mix of both.
