Pacu help continued... Anonymous
Okay so, I got my Pacu eating again more or less. Tried something that I hadn't tried before - cashews, peanuts, and almonds, he rather likes them.

Anyway, I bought some driftwood for the tank because I'm planning on putting in some albino bushy nosed Plecos, but the driftwood has made the tank real murky. I changed out almost 75% of the water to see if it would help the next day and it did for the most part, but a day later it went back to being murky.

I did some basic water tests and everything seemed fine, Ph, nitrites, nitrates, amonia, etc, but I can't seem to find out why it's so murky. Something I'm missing?

PS - I did wash the driftwood before I put it into the tank. Also, it was American driftwood IIRC, just thought I'd mention that if it has any relevance.

What you are seing is the tannins from the wood being released into your tank.

Unforunately, washing driftwood is not enough. What you can do now (and should do next time to avoid having murky water) is soak it in a large tub of water over the course of several days or weeks (the time depends on how murky the water gets) while changing the water every day. Keep doing that until the water remains clear, and then you can stick it back in your tank.

Not to worry though, tannins usually don't have an adverse affect to the water, though it can kill enough of the beneficial bacteria in your tank to cause some problembs. Just keep a close monitor on your water parameters.

Good luck!
