Hey /an/

Me and my aunt found this puppy three days ago. my grandma adopted it and for the next week, I'm in charge of preliminary housebreaking measures.

He's a mixed mutt, but I'm pretty sure one of his parents was a lab. He's about 4-5 weeks old, maybe younger. Vet appt. on monday.

My grandma has a nice house with nice carpet and her major concern is shit and piss stains. We had him on a kind of regular schedule (eat/drink, then poop/pee about 30 minutes/1 hour later) until this morning. We fed him some liver treats and his stomach didn't seem to agree with them. He's had really runny shit all morning, and he's taken to unpredictable bowel movements. He might shit 15 minutes after some food, or hold it for three hours and shit all over the place without warning.

Any tips or tricks on how to protect our carpets over here? I take him outside and he'll have no interest in defecating, but we'll have the Resolve out 30 minutes later inside :\

don't let the little guy run around everywhere yet. take a room or two and make sure that you put down some newspaper or puppy pads that you can get at any sort of pet store. now, keep an eye on him, and make sure when you see him make a wierd pose like he's going to pee or poop, quickly scoop him up and take him outside. mind you, he might pee on you a little, but once he's outside, he'll have to go out there. when he finally does, praise him (good boy, petting, maybe a treat or just a little kibble). do this repeatedly and he'll learn that he needs to do that outside, and that he needs your help to get out there.

now, this worked on my dog a few years ago. if you are really concerned about the conditions of your carpets or this doesn't really work, try to find a dog trainer and ask for some tips (you don't need to actually hire him or her for that.)

anyway, good luck.

You should get him some better food, what are you feeding him? He may need something hypoallergenic, also most dog foods made with beef are not overly good for them. You might want to find puppy food also, royal cannin makes puppy food that is good for them and meets all of their needs. So by switching the diet should help with the pooping, also you can buy training matts for puppies, so if they do go in the house they do it on the matt

Get puppy chow for your dog if you aren't feeding him that. The regular dog kibble may hurt his stomach, or it's possible that he could have hookworms. I think that'd what they're called.. Check his shit for white strings. Also post a side view of him. If he has hookworms then his belly will look..potbellied.
