what's the difference between a malamute and a siberian husky?

One's a dog and the other one isn't.

Malamutes are bigger than huskies and have brown eyes. Malamutes NEVER have blue eyes. If you find a blue eyed Mal, it's not a Malamute, at least not pure. Also they're stockier than a Husky and not as fast, however they're stronger and can pull more than a husky can.

Malamutes are more subduded than Huskies and better with kids.

Plus you have to be fucking active and a half with Sled dogs. They will not do well if only walked every few days. Long walk daily is needed, otherwise they will destroy your house in search of fun, and escape often.

It sounds a like a friendly high energy dog which sound great to me. Are there any health problems associated with the Malamute in particular that any prospective owner should be concerned about?

One more thing to note, these breeds tend to have a strong prey drive. If you own a cat or other small pets, be careful. Huskies and malamutes love to chase anything that will run, and there's a fine line between the "play" and "prey" instinct.

It takes effort to train restraint into these dogs. Training, overall, is a must for this breed. Malamutes are independent and smart, which means you have to convince them that you are worth listening to. Otherwise, you'll have a huge fluffy wrecking ball that will gnaw through everything you own. But with the proper training and socialization, these dogs are fun, affectionate and loyal as hell.

hell, just training a malamute to walk on a leash and not engage sled dog mode dragging you along is a challenge

Psh, my husky thought the cat was her baby.

Yeah, well, someone I know adopted a husky/malamute from a shelter, and then it killed and ate her cat. Granted, thats by no means normal behavior, but it took a while to get my husky to leave my cats alone.
