As I've always understood it, they cut a series of grooves in the bark of tree branches to lay their eggs. I don't know what kind of branches they generally use. I've heard of them on rose bushes, so I guess I could be wrong about what they can and can't get through. Either way, it's pretty unlikely that someone would mistake a cicada for a moth, so it's really a moot point.
