My dearest /an/,

I have in my posession a new kitten, currently named Finnegan or 'Finn' for short. Finn is positively adorable, and playful, and the pic is very related.

I also have an older kitty who does not appreciate having her space encroached upon. Ivy's sweet, but she's nervous. Since the cat came in, she's been curious but defensive, hissing at me whenever I emerge from the kitten's room.

We're going to go through a slow integration process, letting the kitten grow accustomed to the room before opening the door a crack, then letting him explore the upstairs a little bit (supervised, of course) before letting him meet Ivy through the door of a cat carrier.

As I understand it, they'll get along a little better because they're different sexes, and because Finnegan is a kitten. But I had a bad experience with getting two cats to get used to one another (they never did, and the new one was trapped upstairs by the older one until the older one kicked it).

So what's /an/'s experience with this? About how long does it take to integrate a kitten into the life of an older cat, and what are some tips/things I should watch out for?

In my experience, older cats tend to do better with kittens once they get used to them. When I got my first kitten years ago, I just kept her in my room for the first few days, and my mom's cat totally freaked out. When they were finally face to face, the kitten just bumbled right up to her and tried to play. The cat smacked the shit out of her and ran off, but kitten wasn't having it, and she proceeded to pester her non stop for the next several days. I guess her idea was, "I'm going to do this every day until you like it." It worked and they became BFF, yay <3
