Speaking of ferrets, i was thinking of getting one. However, the only thing holding me back is I've been told that they smell, and then that smell gets on your clothes and then you smell, and then you will never be in a relationship again. Is this true?
>> Anonymous
They don't smell. Just feed them a food without fish in it.
>> Anonymous
You may want to concider that they shit a lot too, they need to be let out everyday, and they need a fresh supply of water near them at all times. They poo in corners, and steal things too.

If you can put up with that, they're great pets!

I have two

House and treat the ferret as if it was a small carnivore like a cat (which it is) instead of a rodent. A lot of stuff for them is designed like the later, which doesn;t take into account the smells and messes they produce.

As mentioned, don't give them food with fish in it, and look around at different foods. Ones with lots of grain suck plus they make them stink more. Think about a 'raw' food diet; friend of mine feeds his frozen mice and rabbit meat and his ferret looks great.

Anyone who tells you ferrets specifically smell are people who've never had pets. Guess what? *All* pets smell if you don't know how to clean up after that particular pet.

Yeah cat food does not make good ferret food.

A cat, while being an obligate carnivore (needs meat to survive) is still able to digest plant matter to some extent. Thus cat food can contain quite a bit of plant matter as "filler". This is perfectly acceptable and healthy for cats.

Not so with ferrets. Their digestive system is only suited for handling meat and thus they should be given a pretty much purely meat-based diet.

I've been wanting to give my ferrets a real meat diet.. Can someone suggest a Raw food for them?

I heard raw mice and chicken were ok, but I'm not sure.

In the wild they eat mice and birds... So yeah.

If you want to keep it easy, you might consider trying Evo Dry Ferret Food by Nutra Pet. It's a grain-free dry food, it's largely meat based, with some fruits and vegetables added to round out the nutritional content they would get in the wild.

We fed all 10 of mine Iams adult cat food. One of them lived to be 13 so we did something right. We also gave them feravite. Feeding ferrets raw meat is not a good idea because once they get the taste of blood, they will go after you and bite.

Back when I owned ferrets, I had a large ass bottle of that bitter apple stuff. I convinced a friend of mine to taste some of it, and he complained it tasted of ear wax and got masivly sick afterwards. That stuff is powerful cause I remember when my dad sprayed some into a fan under his tank and we had to leave the house for 20 minutes till the house stoped tasting of it.
>> Anonymous
Do the members of your family have a tendency to taste the house?

My dad owns a fish tank, and there are some small fans under it to keep some things cool, and he sprayed it tight into the fan while spraying it on some of the cords so the ferrets don't chew them and get fried. The shit once in the air doesn't go away quickly, and once you in have the vapors, you have the taste in your mouth for a few hours.
