Dear /an/. When i was hiking in the woods 4 hours ago around arkansas i got bit by a coral snake or the ones thats not poisonous. it was red touching yellow. doesn't it say red touches yellow you're a lucky fellow/ red to black your dead jack, i dunno i was not paying attention.

Anyways since it barely bit me and its non venomous i figured i'd wait it off. But it's been hurting like a bitch now and my kidneys and organs hurt too.

Should i go to the doctor or is this just pain i have to get through.

Congratulations, you've been bitten by a coral snake. Unless you receive the appropriate antivenin soon, you are totally fucked.

Congratulations; you all got bitten by a troll. Better get that antivenom.

While coral snakes are poisonous, it's quite difficult to get envenomated. They are back-fanged snakes. which means that they don't have those two huge front fangs that sterotypical snakes have. They have tiny little teeth and their mouth is very small. They basically have to chew on you for any venom to get in...and even then they'd have to bite you on a "small" part of the body, like a finger, for their mouth to even fit!

Anyway, even if the op isn't trolling the chance of him being in danger is dreafully low. And if it was a real bite, there would be little doubt as to what happened.

RED ON YELLOW kill a fellow, RED ON BLACK is a friend of Jack.

hate to say it but coral snakes are neurotoxic. the venom attacks your neurons. if it bit you you'd be paralyzed before anything started to hurt.

Red on yellow, bitch's gonna swallow
Red on black, bitch's fucking jack!
I'm so clever!

first, snakes are venomous, not poisonous. poison is ingested, venom injected. sencond, they're elapids (cobra, etc)you dumbshit, not rear fanged. their fangs are in front, just they are small because they don't fold like a pit vipers. and no, they don't have to chew on you to envenomate you, although they are generally mild mannered and not prone to bite.

red on black and red on yellow ryhme also only works in the US, tropical coral snakes come in all patterns.

if you didn't notice to small pricks and instead saw a series of small lacerations you're fine. if you noticed two small pricks, how about you go die so idiots like you will stop handling snakes you can't ID

red and black = harmless jack
red and yellow = kill a fellow

that was what I first thought of when I saw the snake pic of yours. troll or not, the various idiots from gaia could learn something from us and save their miserable lives... or am I purposely misleading you all? >:3

OP here. Turns out it was a coral bite albiet a very small one with barely any venom. I googled it after a few posts on here and realized i was fucked so i got to the hospital quickly and was given anti-venom even though it still was not that bad. The guy even said nobody has died in the US to a coral bite since they got the anti-venom for it.

Anyways here you go.

The rhyme is not just to ID a coral snake, but to tell a (venomous) coral snake from a (harmless) kingsnake, whose color pattern closely mimics the coral snake. I imagine if you're somewhere outside the US, it's not as vitally important to know the exact order of colors on a coral snake.

Pic is a kingsnake.

I would post pics of my kingsnake but I don't want to get b&

duh, as long as you can tell the difference that means you can ID the coral snake.
>> Anonymous
>>112862

You fail reading comprehension.>>112618said that coral snakes come in all colors outside the US so this rhyme wasn't that useful to ID them. I said the rhyme is actually used in the US to tell the difference between the harmless kingsnake and the venomous coral snake. The rhyme isn't to ID the snake, per se; it's to tell the difference. None of the rhymes said anything about the snakes' names. It's not "red on yellow, that's a coral snake, kill a fellow." If you know on your own that the venomous one is called a coral snake and the other is a kingsnake, then good for you.

yup, like if you get maced and can't goto the hospital for some reason (wink wink), all you need to do is get some Epsom salt, vinegar, and mix the two into a runny paste. Rub em into your eyes, and relief will ensue! :D

There was a guy in Florida who dies from a coral snakebite just over a year ago, but he was drunk out of his mind and didn't have the sense to pull the snake off. The headline on fark.com read "Drunk man attacks coral snake with branches and beer bottles. Floridian 0, Coral Snake 1"

Anywhere in the U.S. a snake with red bands touching yellow bands is venomous, while red touching black is nonvenomous. In other countries, however, coral snakes can have any combination of banding.

Regardless, you're pretty fucked.

don't. that mixture is acidic

if you got bit by a kingsnake(the non-deadly kind) you might still have gotten some rabies in the wound, they do eat rodents and such so its quite possible it had some rabies in its mouth when it bit you,
best get to the hospital

red and yellow, and you are most likely to have been bitten by a venomous snake as opposed to a non venomous snake of similar yet different coloration between rings. seeking medical attention with a brief description as to the size, color, and makeup of the snake that had bitten you will be important for the appropriate delivery of the correct anti-venom. red and black, and there you got a marvelous evolutionary creation of nature. seeing as a red and yellow combination, not to be confused with a red and black combination, is indeed venomous, whereas the latter being on venomous, would indicate a sentience between the venomous and non-venomous species. Simply put, the evolutionary processes must have acknowledged the inherent venomous quality, or at least the learned predatory aversion to said venomous snakes by the non venomous snakes. Somehow, a snake having poor eyesight was able to manipulate its gene structure to mimic its venomous brethren to share in the perk of the red and yellow's signals though to a much lesser extent of a red and black. Although even to us, and OP, it's difficult to establish which is which. But that was the purpose. Why not just copy it red and yellow instead of red and black and further confuse the predator or simple human into remembering some vague rhyme scheme determining a red and black from a venomous snake and a red and yellow from a non-venomous? We'll likely never know unless further study into the genetics into the two disparate classes of species are done.

Considering that traits originate at random and only stick with the species if the species manages to not die without passing on its genetic information, one must remember that it is entirely possible for a trait to evolve with no evident purpose or even no direct purpose at all so long as it doesn't actively hinder the species' chances of survival/reproduction.

Most predators don't possess the capacity to generate or remember even simple rhymes, and their reaction to a potentially venomous creature is generally purely instinctive.
As such, one could explain the failure of the snake to EXACTLY mimic its venomous counterpart by simply understanding that such a perfect reproduction isn't necessary. Potential snake eaters/stepper-on-ers tend to not take their chances.
So why doesn't this particular snake go the extra mile and perfectly imitate the colors of the poisonous snake that it's impersonating? One would think it doesn't play much of a role in mating selection since snakes don't rely too much on eyesight to begin with. So who knows?
The important thing is to consider that there might not be a point at all. Good enough to stop you from eating it is good enough to justify the species' existence.
