These are SOLPUGID, aka sun scorpion, aka sun spider, aka the camel spider. They are closely related to the scorpion though they lack the tail. All the crap you've heard about them eating peoples arms and faces and junk are silly myths, and rarely do they get any more than five inches in length. Also, they lack venom, but their bites do hurt.

How in the hell does that thing eat?

I mean, spiders have these nifty hollow chelicherae, and solpugids generally have these hugeass jaws to cut up their prey into easily dissolvable parts.

But how does this critter actually use those bristly bloated chelicerae for anything?

Saw a few of those in person, when I was deployed to Saudi Arabia, and later when I was deployed to Iraq. In Iraq we had one that would show up every night and chase us around the generator repair bay.

As with most insects and arachnids, their order names can be pronounced/spelled in several ways...

Solpugida, Solpugides, Solpugae, Galeodea and Mycetophorae are all the same, but of course, Solpugid is the shorter version of Solpugida. I say tomato, you say.... Get the picture?
