Since there are so many anons here who seem to know cats well, I need to ask something.
So, there is this old friend of mine who owns a cat. Five years ago I used to visit said friend and play with the cat a lot. Then the friend and I lost contact of each other for five years, until recently I went to visit her again.
She told me that her cat is usually very afraid of people and won't let anyone pet it. I wanted to pet it anyway, so I did, very slowly of course not to freak out the cat.
The cat then just lazily eyeballed me, sniffed my hand and proceeded to lick it. Could it be that the cat remembered me or my scent from five years ago?
Also, another friends of mine has a cat too, who is also very very afraid of guests. It wont even show up at all, normally, that is. But as I was visiting them for the first time the cat was perfectly fine with me. It even came to sit in my lap. Friend and her family were all in complete awe, as the cat usually hates guests. The friend had visited me many times before, though, so I figured that maybe the cat had gotten used to my scent through my friends clothes? Then it recognized it again?
Do cats have a memory like this? Or do they just randomly like me?
I'm sorry for bad English, I hope you still understand what I'm trying to say.
