The male uses his cerci to hold the female's head while the female is mating with the second abdominal segment of the male. The male sex organ is actually in the final segment, but before mating the male moves the sperm up into a special pocket closer to the thorax. In some species, the male will hold onto the female until the female deposits the eggs in freshwater.
