They arent illegal. In California you are only allowed to have MALE ferrets that are Neutered.

I had heard that they *were* illegal, but maybe not anymore. Any idea as to why the females would be illegal? Is it because of the whole "neuter, breed, or die: pick one" thing? No one seems to be able to explain why they're illegal in CA.

This one happens to be male, and neutered, but my girlfriend wants to get a female sometime soon. Problem is, is sorta restricts our possibly getting a job in Cali, if that's the case (we're going into the entertainment industry).

His nose is a little big, but the angle of the photo really exaggerates it. Have another angle. :P

They're illegal because California has strict ecosystem laws, and introducing a destructive species such as ferrets would do horrible things. The law doesn't actually say it is illegal to own a ferret, just illegal to breed, sell, or buy one. Technically, as long as they are neutered, never set foot outside of their home, and are vaccinated, they are legal. However, this is near impossible, and doing it is skirting the rules. Most animal control officers would confiscate them anyway.

Actually, Dude, an amphibious... rodent... within city limits... that ain't legal either.

Now, I could be wrong, but as far as I know Ferrets as they exist today (barring the wild Black-Footed Ferret), are completely domesticated. As in, they would die within a week or so out-of-doors, without humans to take care of them. So how does that make sense? How would "introducing a destructive species such as ferrets" "do horrible things" to the ecosystem, if they cannot survive long enough to breed, especially if most are neutered and spayed before being even a year old.

hmm... yeah Domesticated Ferrets are EXTREMELY delicate... and get sick VERY easily. they also cant handle the heat to well (they have a very high body temp of about 102) so depending on were they are in cali, if they got out theyd be gone in a matter of hours. Also they require very specialized diet and if they cant eat what there needs require, they get diarrhea within days and die not long after... so basically... ppl are paranoid. a ferret getting out of its house is more devastating to the ferret then to the "ecosystem" i have 3 ferrets, and they not only wouldn't but COULDN'T hurt a fly. there just big goofballs

Ferrets are still illegal in california(also in parts of NY and Hawaii and some small counties), and I doubt they will become legal anytime soon. People still however smuggle ferrets into california from the surrounding states. Be wary though now there are stop stations and you'll have to figure out a good route to get back to CA so you don't get stopped, the ferret will be taken away and you'll get a nice finez.

It has nothing to do with the neutered thingy. Almost every fucking ferret from a petstore or shelter is neutered or spayed. Animal control will NOT give a fuck if its neutered a FERRET IS A FERRET AND THEY ARE ILLEGAL TO OWN IN THE PLACES I MENTIONED. If you do get one you'll STILL have a hard time finding a vet to vaccinate it, vets will not turn away sick animals though. but you know why it'll be hard to find a good vet? LOL COZ FERRETS ARE ILLEGAL IN CA. However its not illegal to sell ferret products, thats why the petstores always have ferret food etc.

So yeh, don't be an idiot and get a ferret and smuggle it in. if your neighbor calls the AC on you he/she will be taken away, i've read many actual accounts of it happening.

It really is just misinforming people. People think ferrets are vicious and whatever. When most of the domesticated ferrets wouldnt even know what to do with a piece of meat or a mouse running around, because they are domesticated.

I most certainly have NEVER heard of a ferret getting diarrhea and dying. Its not too difficult to provide a ferret with a good blanaced diet. THere are many good ferret foods out there. But ferrets are prone to illiness like insulima or adrenal and many others.

ferrets can die from diarrhea... if its not addressed they get dehydrated and thats that... and i was saying that if they were to get loose... things like over heating and getting sick from not eating the right foods are what can happen to a ferret out on its own not cared for.... as for me i live in a city were ferrets are 100% legal and i honestly would never move somewhere were there not... i love my babys more then life...

I'm going to agree untill you get to the vet. They'll take it in, "fix" what ever is wrong, then bill you the same price as a larger animal.
They also get sick within a matter of days. If you don't watch 'em, a ferret would not last more than a week. The reason why they are banned in Cali is also partly because of disease. Any one remember the Marshal/Bandits problem. Killed thousands because of what was in the food.

As for the new owner, I suggest keepin the male and female in different cages eventually. Mine were constantly fighting and drawing blood. But, saddly, now that the male died, the girl just mopes around. When we let her out, she bites, chews, claws on everything. This didn't happen with our first batch of Ferrets, because we gave them alone time when they got too wirey.
