Dear An,
I have a small rabbit. Every few weeks it goes into "I must dig at the litter in my cage exessively at all hours of the day and night no matter how many toys you give me" phase. This has been driving my roommates insane, and since we're not supposed to have pets I fear they will force me to get rid of her. Is there anything I can do to stop her? I tried giving her cardboard tubes, salt licks, balls, and even putting a light towel over her cage. Pic not my bunny but slightly relevent.

It is trying to dig an escape tunnel. Set it free.

Umm... if it's litter is pine or some kind of wood try switching to something kinda like this...

Plus it helps absorbe the strong smell of the rabbit's urine, and it's better on their poor feets.

Chop its head, skin it and put it in the fridge.

Never mind guys, I just sat on it. :(

It's going insane too, you realize that, right? It needs interaction, and no amount of toys will help the poor thing.

Rabbits are burrowers, and not the smartest critters. That's why you keep them in a cage OUTSIDE THE HOUSE until you kill them. Then they move into the kitchen.

My bunnies used to dig alot until I put a plastic grate in their litterpan. They'll still occasionally move their hay around, but not being able to actually dig has curbed the habit.

You should be able to get the grate at your local hardware store. Just cut it to fit in the litterpan and make sure the holes are large enough for the crap to fall through.

MORE enrichment.
Your bunny is bored.
Let it run around a lot more.
Give it more exercise.
If you can't stop it, maybe getting it a (same sexed) friend might help.

Absolute truth. Rabbit tastes good, are easy to kill instantly so there's no suffering, breed quickly, and are a relatively dense protein (you get more nutrients from less meat). Plus, that means you can use the fur too.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say, if it's a female, maybe she's digging because she's got the urge? Don't female rabbits do the serious digging when it comes to building warrens and rearing litters and stuff? Maybe you can find a quiet alternative, like some rabbit-safe fabrics that she can dig in and rearrange. Rabbits seem to love to rearrange things. I'll give mine an old phone book and he'll sit there for a long time, just turning pages.

Your rabbit is BORED BORED BORED due to excess energy. He needs MORE time out of the cage to run around. Rabbits need 3 hours of out of cage playtime a DAY. They are JUST as much work as a cat or a dog and anyone who says otherwise is being cruel to the animal.

the last part isn't true at all, rabbit meat is pretty bad for you if you eat it exclusively as it's extremely low in amino acids.

Get another rabbit to make yours less insane. They need someone to be bunny with.

Then they need space, sacrifice the bedroom, you can sleep in the kitchen. Puny human.
