All rats, and I mean ALL pet rats, have been exposed to Mycoplasmosis, unless you've obtained a sterile lab rat. Mycoplasmosis is the #1 reason our rats get respiratory infections. Of course, dirty cages and stress can exacerbate the problem and cause a flare up, but eventually your rat is going to get something either way... whether it's a tumor or a Myco flare up or something else. I've owned a lot of rats over a lot of years and talked to a lot of rat breeders and vets, and they all say the same thing... give them the best life you can while they're with you and prepare for the time when they start getting sick, because it will happen before you know it.
