Several, I'm sure. I've had quite a few but after adopting two kittens, I decided not to get more rats. I loved my rats when I had them, the one male that was my first rat was the sweetest, cuddliest momma's boy and the two females who were fucking crazy but affectionate and loved to play with me. Good memories!

how do cats treat rats that you bring home as pets? will they assume that it's merely another pet and won't kill it, or will they kill it when you're not around?

My cats were always really intimidated by my rats. I dunno why. Both cats are indoor/outdoor and have left all manner of things on our doorstep, including at least one full grown squirrel. I think the lack of fear in domestic rats might have had something to do with it. They'd get right up in the cats' faces and the cats would just be like "????" and take off. The cats also learned really quickly that putting their faces near the rats cage.. well, rats have good little grasping hands and teeth. I think they got nipped a few times and decided the rats weren't worth the trouble.

I have 2 rats (a third but not at my home) My kitten who is about 3 months now plays with my two rats, though she is starting to get rough with them. I had them first, but as long as you don't hear and squealing, it's fine.

If they went outside they'd have met some alley rats probably and those can get huge and really mean.

I'd love to own rats. I work with them in a laboratory and they strike me as being creatures that would make good pets. Unfortunately I'm allergic to them.

if its the fur you are allergic too, get a hairless one.
they feel like peaches.

I have like 30 rats in my backyard, hope they all die soon

Jesus fuck, you'd better do something about that. Unlike OP's pet rat, wild rats are nasty as hell.

It's time to bring out the mousetraps or mouseboxes or whatever you use to kill rats

I was given two by my sister. Cousin let out one..so I'm down to one. She's a sweet heart and follows you around in her ball. And likes giving kisses.
She has no fear of the dogs, grabs them through the cage and bashes their faces into it....they've learned to keep their distance.
I've found her on my bed the few times she's gotten out, which is clear on the other side of the house from where she's kept. She pounced on my face one morning, which resulted in her being catapulted acrossed the room when I bolted straight up in my bed.
She's got a curly coat too, which I haven't seen in rats around here before.
I've been wanting to get her a buddy, but haven't seen anything healthy or clean looking in the shops around here.

I have three myself. 1 hooded fancy and 2 dumbos. All girls.

I have had rats for pets for 6 years now and they are just wonderful pets to have. Fun, intelligent, quirky to the point that they just make you chuckle and very lovey.

What's the best way to keep a rat? I had my two girls in a HUGE 100 gallon fish tank..

I dunno mang. I read an essay on how pest rats are vicious and disease carrying creatures.

Are pet rats different than these monsters?

Its been debatable on whether a fish tank is a good rat home. Mine live in one of those ferret cages. That way, the girls can run, climb, and burrow. They have so much fun because they decorate each level however they want to. My only problem w/ fish tanks is that i feel that there is not enough venhilation but that, like i said, is debatable.

Very! There is alot of differences between "pest" rats and "pet" rats.

I myself, am terrified of wild rats and just like everything in the wild, can carry rabies and other diseases.

Think about it like this, there's a big difference between domesticated dogs and wild dogs. Pigs, prarie dogs, sugar gliders, etc...make good pets and are all wild animals untill they are domesticated. Hence the reason why pets rats are known as "fancy" rats.

I let guests play and hold my girls so that they can see the difference bettwen a wild and fancy rat.

If you're worried about diseases, the popular pets carry diseases that humans can contract. You can get certain strands of pneumonias from cats and eye infections from dogs...not so much from fancy rats.

Here's a great site for learning about rats.

I used to have rats in my shop, they'd watch me work. We'd poison them regularly, and the dog would pretend to kill them and line them up outside the shop. I once watched a rat watch the dog, who was furiously digging through a pile of stuff looking for the rat. I haven't seen them since I found a 6' long king snake in there, though. I think the snake lives in the attic.
