I think they're pholcids or something.

ironically, spiders like that sometimes freak out people that keep tarantulas.

haha yeah.
Now that I think about it, the ones that really freak me out are the skinny small ones that I always assume to be poisonous. Ones that look like black widows, the brown recluse, or orb weavers. Orb weavers are always cool to see, but never cool to walk into.
I think that freaks me out the most.. the webs. aoijgsgughsyuck

The mexican redknee tarantula is by far my favorite. I love the colors, and it's a tarantula!
I'd love to have one in my home. It's so cool watching it shed.

I love them too! I want to get one and name it something ridiculous like Fifi and trick visitors into promising to pet what they think is a toy poodle!
>> spiderman !!Q+JluTncCte
     File :-(, x)
>>227995
you can get them pretty easily through online dealers or even many pet stores. the only thing about that species (Brachypelma smithi) is that they grow very slowly! which is a mixed blessing i guess..depends on how you look at it. in one sense, they'll be around for a long time, in another, you'll have a tiny spider for a while. (unless you buy it as a juvenile or adult..which, if female, isn't always cheap)
>> BD !!a165fEMQcRD
>>228084
Are they harder to take care of when they're younger and smaller? I have yet to do a lot of research, but if it's not too much I definitely want to get one. I had a bearded dragon before for a long time so I do have experience with this sort of thing.
>> spiderman !!Q+JluTncCte

>>228133
they're hardER to take care of when young, but not hard. you just need to keep a closer eye on them as they can dessicate much easier. i usually put a few drops of water down one side of a vial and let it soak into the substrate. others keep the substrate moist at all times. if you do, just make sure to pay extra attention when cleaning out food remains. small spiders = small prey items = even smaller remains. in a small vial with moisture, mold can grow easily. nothing a quick substrate change can't fix if you want to.

instead of a vial, you can keep them in a small deli cup like this.

just looked up B. smithi on a couple pages that i would recommend and have bought from.. one has .25" spiderlings for $20 and 2" for $60, the other has .33" for $20 or .75" for $25. all of those are unsexed and captive bred.

the first site also has sexed females at $125 for a 2.5" spider or $225 for a 4" both captive bred.

notice the price difference? that's why a lot of people buy them unsexed..especially people new to keeping arachnids.

I have been browsing local pet stores in my area for ages and have yet to find a B. Smithi. For the love of god man, give me the url to that site! If you trust them then I am willing to try them. I am about ready to jump off a cliff from the aggravation of not being able to find one.

the first one is the one i use more than any other dealer: www.southernspiderworks.com (and they do freebies!!) the second one is: http://www.botarby8s.com/ (doesn't do freebies)

there are others worth a look http://www.swiftinverts.com/ (don't have B. smithi at the moment) is the one i'd look at next after those first two. swift's does freebies also...

if you join an arachnid forum.. www.arachnoboards.com or www.atshq.org there are classifieds with people selling out of their personal collections..those are usually the best deals. of course, there is the risk of doing business with the wrong person.

so far i've never had a problem with dealing with individuals..but i frequent the forums so kind of have an idea of who is trustworthy..and avoid buying from people that just joined. there are also sections for feedback so you can look up people and see what others have to say about them.

forgot to say..that is one of the most popular species with beginners (and non-beginners) so you don't have to worry much about taking care of it. pretty simple once you know the basics.

What would you say were the biggest pros and cons to having a spider?
>> Anonymous
Pro: They're beautiful, graceful animals. Cheap to feed and house.
Con: Itchy hairs
>> E Noni Mos !gbBCxc.7FI
     File :-(, x)
I'll add another con: It is hard to find a woman that doesn't mind them. I have to keep mine in the back room of my flat. Sorry about how dark this picture is.
>> Anonymous
I am a woman who loves them. I have five only because my apartment can't fit more.
>> Anonymous
So which spider would be the best to start off with? I'm thinking of getting a docile and one that allows "easy"(if you could say that) handling .
>> E Noni Mos !gbBCxc.7FI
     File :-(, x)
>>228177
Rose Hairs are the most common and while that doesn't make them the best, they are also docile and slow growing, not to mention hardy when it comes to environment. I'd suggest starting there.

>>228183
thanks for the pointer, gonna look into that one

pros vary depending on the person. for me, they are fascinating to observe. sometimes they don't do much though..so it helps to be interested in them in the first place. they all have their own distinct behaviors..which vary from spider to spider even within a single species.

i used to have a B. vagans that loved to dump his water dish out and bury it not long after i cleaned it and gave him fresh water. haha in a way it was annoying because i had to keep digging it out and refilling it..but it was also funny to see and wonder why he liked to do it.

feeding is interesting to watch, but with time, it becomes just another part of the routine. especially if you have a bunch of them. (collections tend to have a habit of growing)

breeding is very cool to see. it's rare you get to see spiders interact..and usually when they do, it's a struggle to kill and eat the other one.

as was said, they are beautiful creatures and come in a large variety of coloration, sizes, temperaments, habits, and environmental requirements/preferences.
>> spiderman !!Q+JluTncCte
     File :-(, x)
>>228193
cons: crickets! i hated keeping them around, they stink and the adult males chirp to no end unless you get each one and clip their wings. something i never bothered to do because it was easier to store their container in a cupboard somewhere else in the house.

>>228168mentioned itchy hairs..these are only found on the new world tarantulas, and not even all of them. also, most of the tarantulas i had, that had them, never used them.

>>228172is right about the ladies..i actually had a mixed reaction..some wouldn't even go in my room, others wanted me to take one out so they could hold it. most of the time they wanted nothing to do with them.

can't really think of many cons honestly. they are quiet, don't take up much room, don't require too much work, and they don't smell.

one thing about "too much work" ..it's easy to care for a few and doesn't take much time..but a lot of people wind up with a bunch of them after a while..and the time need to feed and clean them all does add up.

all in all, your best bet is do read! buy a book online or just join a forum, or even just lurk around a forum and learn..all the beginner questions get asked repeatedly just like you keep seeing bikecat get posted here every day. (not that i have anything against bikecat.)

i see you said "flat" so i'm guessing you're from the UK? if so, i don't know that any of those links i posted earlier will ship overseas. there are many places to buy arachnids over there though. on arachnoboards, there's a whole section for europeans, outside of the regular area, where you could find out about reputable dealers and such. also, the british tarantula society is HUGE. lots of members even over here in merika. http://www.thebts.co.uk/ they should be able to point you in the right direction..or better yet, go to their conference..you can buy all kinds of critters in person.

yea, the rose hairs (Grammostola rosea) are great starters. i'd say pretty much anything Grammostola or Brachypelma would make a good starter. i'd stay away from the less common species since they'd be a little more pricey..but G. rosea or aureostriata are great, B. smithi, albopilosum (cheap!), vagans, boehmei, and emilia are all good too.

just keep in mind..just because they are "good beginner species" doesn't mean they won't bite you or even be extremely defensive. get comfortable with it first and gauge it's reaction to you while cleaning the tank. some will just sit there while you open the lid and grab the water dish next to them..others may run away, throw up a threat display, or even pounce.

here is someones G. rosea. :D

generally though, they aren't that crazy. i had a mature male that i could literally scoop up with my hand and he would just lift his legs up onto my hand.

was just pointing out that no matter how docile a species is said to be..they are still wild animals.

it also has to do with how you go about picking them up.
>> E Noni Mos !gbBCxc.7FI

>>228195
You're clever to pick up on that, but no, I am not from the UK. I have a strange online vocab that gets people confused. Suffice to say I am an American. And I have to agree with you on the con of crickets, those are some of the most annoying insects I have ever known aside from house flies.

yea, it's rare. this pic is of a HUGE web in texas that a LOT of spiders made and all live in together. here's a link with video. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20514703/ the spider they show clearly isn't one of the ones involved in that huge web though..it's an Argiope and doesn't make webs like that sprawling one they are talking about.

from the other thread are also pics of spiders interacting..without eating each other. particularly the first one and this one. i'd have to look up the name of these, but i think they're from australia and are one of the few spiders that aren't prone to cannibalism. too bad oz is pretty adamant about not exporting animals for the general public.

That is one hell of an awesome spiderweb.
This is a picture I took a few minutes back of my Avicularia. See how thin it is? I was afraid it was going to starve before it recovered from it's molt. On a side note, the spider is eating the cricket's guts while it is squirming; it was still trying to get free.
