Whats the absolute cheapest way for me to keep this turtle in british conditions, cheapest heat lap, smallest tank etc (not in a cruel way, I want it to be comfortable, just not expensive)

I'm poor as fuck but turtles are awesome

Help me /an/, any advice?

If you don't have money, forget about having children or pets.

I have money, enough to keep a cat and 2 dogs, and still pay child support, one of my cats had died and I want a more "exotic" pet this tie, that's gonna last longer.. I just don't want to waste money

Do the research and find out what is BEST for the pet, not what is CHEAPEST. The two are rarely the same. If you invest in a low-quality, cheap gadget instead of a slightly more pricey, better one, you'll end up spending more since you'll probably end up going out to get the better one sooner or later.

In any event, if you're looking to save money short-term, you can spend relatively little and keep him alive. For a few months or so. If you want to save money long-term, get what the turtle will need when it is an adult, in terms of a tank and whatnot, so you don't have to keep getting bigger and more powerful equipment.

Exotic pets cost money. If you can't realize this fact, go hang yourself.

It pisses me off when people want to do a pet 'for cheap.' So many pets die because people aren't willing to spend the money on the proper equipment and do the appropriate research.

Also a cat will outlive one of these turtles. Look into longer living pets if you want one to outlast a cat. Also pets that live that long are usually FUCKING EXPENSIVE to take care of so if you aren't willing to spend the bucks, don't bother.

i have worked at a shop and taken care of these animals. here is the cheapest way that you are not reducing the quality of life for your pet.

if its a small baby (1-2 inches) you can start with a 10 gallon tank. put about 2 inches of water in the tank (declorinated) and then some rocks that the turtle can EASILY climb out of the water on. Buy a clamp light that is pointed toward the rocks so the turtle can bask in the sun. This is essential since the animal is cold blooded. I woudl use a 40-60 watt bulb for that size tank. Best if you also get one of the full spectrum bulbs too, usually availible in good pet shops.

since you dont have a filter in this setup it is essential to change the water every 2 days. DONT SLACK ON THIS!!!!! there are ways around this, but you will be spending more $ on a submersible filter or a better setup.

feed once daily, those turtle pellets are suprisingly good for them. occasionally toss in some romaine lettuce and other leafy greens (no iceberg lettuce). when you are buying one from a store, ask them to feed the turtles befor you buy one. if the turtle you want isnt chasing the food, dont buy him. a healthy turtle is an aggressive eater.

i forgot to mention most aquatic turtles will outgrow the 10 gallon tank in about 1-3 years. a 40 gallon breedder tank will last you much longer.

if you are getting a tortoise (land turtle) the setup is COMPLETELY different.
