rats are good pets. typical female rat has two speeds: sleepdrinkeat and ZOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM. male rats i have known start bouncy and then become big fat cuddlers. downside: testicles. overall, though, rats are intelligent, social, quiet, clean, and won't smell unless you let the cage get out of hand. however, they do better in pairs or more.
hamsters are typically best kept solitary (cannibalism is common, especially among larger breeds, even between siblings who have been raised together) and depending on the type you get, or really, on the hamster itself, will either be a totally mellow little beast or a bloodthirsty ball of fur.
guinea pigs are larger, but are very social and affectionate after they get used to you. my mom had one that would squeal when it heard her opening the door when she came home. you could probably find a youtube video and hear the sound for yourself.. it's unique
whatever you get, make sure you get a chance to handle+meet it. most pet stores should let you touch/hold/play with whatever you're looking to buy. observe the reactions of the different animals.
