Some brands of catnip have little bulbs in them. Rubbing these releases their oils and gives off a strong scent.

Look for these little bulbs when you buy a pack of catnip, they vary from batch-to-batch and from company-to-company. They'll always vary in quantity.

If you can get your hands on the actual plant [not just the leaves and bulbs that you find packaged], it's powerful enough to make a cat foam at the mouth and cause its eyes to dialate. They also get very carefree and playful.

Know what's weird? I once bought organic unaltered stems of pure catnip plant and my cats barely liked it at all. They much prefer their processed crap.

When I was at PetCo, I saw the organic brand next to the processed brand.

The organic brand had no bulbs.
