They're sensitive as hell, in every sense of the word. I had a hedgehog die because he ate cat food that a raccoon touched while wandering in my garage. I'd get a young one, and raise it to get used to you. But if you do it right, they live as long as a cat and are really entertaining.

My mate has one, the hedgehog is fine when shes handling it, but if anyone else comes near him he starts balling up and making noises :< and he sleeps a lot, only comes out like middle of the night.

My sister's boyfriend just recently got a hedgehog. He's adorable.

He likes it so far, I don't think there are many problems and my sister said that the spikes really don't hurt like people expect if you just touch them.

They're not good pets if you're expecting something that will seek out your attention and desire affection.

The best you can hope for, by acclimatizing them to your presence, is a Hedgehog that doesn't mind being handled.

Also, they're nocturnal. They will sleep the majority of the day, and if you keep them in the same room with you, they will be running on their wheel while you try to sleep. They tend to poop on their wheels while they run, as well. So they're not particularly cleanly animals.

That being said, they are extremely cute, and very low maintenance as far as pets go. Aside from feeding and cleaning their enclosure/wheel every once and awhile, they don't really need or want much from you.

Oh, and also, their spines are covered with oils that are a skin irritant. The discomfort people feel from handling hedgehogs isn't because their spines are too sharp. If you have easily irritated skin or allergies to many kinds of pets, you may not want to get one.
