As an employee of an animal welfare organization, I frequently ask myself, "What will it take for people to go vegetarian?"

We try to talk about how it's better for your health.. no one cares. We try to teach people about what's happening to the animals on factory farms. We try to talk about how the meat industry is the number one cause of global warming.. and still no one cares.

What do you guys have against vegetarianism? Honestly, I don't want bullshit answers like "MEAT IS KEWL!"

Humans have evolved on a diet that consists of BOTH meat and vegetables. IE, in a state of nature, our bodies require both to be at their peaks.

Most vegetarian complaints that meat is unhealthy come from fast-food meat products. Which should only be eaten sparingly, if at all (I myself love McDonalds, I just dont go there often). Well prepared meat is perfectly healthy.
>> noko
To most people meat is the tastiest thing ever. We are programmed to eat as much fat and protein as we can because before the days of agriculture we had to hunt animals. This meant we could have gone for days/weeks without those precious nutrients/fat, that's why the body craves it so much.
I did try going veggie myself for a bit and actually became physically weak.
The world would be a better place if we were all veggie but that's the last thing I think about when I'm hungry and CRAVE meat.

hey word up, uneducated meatfags,
vegetarians get protein from: soymilk, egg replacement, eggs and milk (if they eat that), any types of leafy green vegetables, legumes, mock meats like riblets or unchicken nuggets, etc. Most Americans get nearly triple the amount of protein they need per day.

vegetarians get protein in their diets. and its just the right amount, hence its rare to see an obese vegetarian.

I snapped a chickens neck once to prepare it for a roast.

Does this make me hitler or something? I enjoy the taste of well prepared meat, I will continue to eat meat as a result, however I do know where my food comes from which negates your factory farm bullshit.

Meat eaters are nine times more likely to become obese than vegetarians. Vegetarians are 10-20 pounds lighter in weight than omnivorous people, as adults. A vegetarian diet will make you 40% less likely to obtain colon, prostate or breast cancer (fun stuff right there!) and 50% less likely to experience a heart attack. All of those statistics can be explained by the fact that vegetarians are people who have decided to adopt a specialized diet. Since they're the kind of people who put effort and thought into their diet, they're obviously going to be healthier, on average.

What the diet consists of is largely irrelevant. You would find similar statistics on health food nuts that eat meat.

I think animal welfare is just far lower priority for most people than it is for you. I like animals and I know they're pretty much tortured to turn them into food, but I just care less about that than I do about eating what I want to – and this seems to be most people's attitude as far as I can tell.

Pictures of mistreated animals in abattoirs or whatever look horrible, but they're not enough to prompt a major lifestyle change, and I've seen them so many times that they begin to wash over me. Also, I don't think the health arguments sway a lot of people, as it's plainly possible to have a healthy lifestyle with meat in your diet.

You would be better off, in my opinion, devoting your resources to improving the conditions for animals in the food industry, rather than persuading people to do something that they have no enthusiasm for.
>> Anonymous
You should teach people how to cook delicious vegetarian food. If that is really possible.
>> Anonymous
I don't have an issue with eating meat; it may not be the healthiest for us, and we may very well be able to do without it, but we are not the only creatures that eat other creatures.

However, I take issue with the way animals are treated. Perhaps, rather than advocating an all-out swap to vegetarianism (maybe that works for some people but whatever), the OP and other like him could start by advocating meat from animals that are treated more humanely? As demand for this grows people will up their standards. Maybe soon then people will eat less meat if it's a lot better.

Why don't we have some kind of meat tree already? Like a tree that grows bacon. I would so plant one in my yard. Then I could go pick fresh bacon for a barbecue, or just when I'm walking in my yard and want fresh bacon (I hate it when that happens and I have to go in).

Not to mention that people in developing nations could get fresh bacon just by planting the bacon tree!

I, personally, have nothing against vegetarians. My former roommate and close friend is a vegan, and cooked me so much tasty food. She is a miracle to the vegan community.

Why don't i go vegetarian/vegan?
I'm in college, and it's rather expensive. Vegetables don't keep well and not all of them can't freeze like meat. Replacement products like soy and such are also rather expensive.

I also have an iron deficiency problem, and have black outs and can pass out if i don't keep up with my iron intake. I know many plants are high in iron, but meat is better for me in this respect.

I'm open to being more vegetarian, but at this point it's rather difficult.

Simple. You are all pretentious fuckers. Yeah, that's right Mr "Oh, look at how moral I am. I don't eat animals!". I eat meat because it's part of a healthy BALANCED diet. Our bodies evolved to digest both plant and animal matter. Why do you think it's unhealthy to pursue a vegetarian/vegan lifestyle until after puberty? Dumb fucks.

Do animals get "abused" for us to get our meat? Yeah. Of course they do. But then again, some little fucking kid in some shit-hole country is also suffering to make your fucking shoes/t-shirt/whatever. And guess what, I never hear you veggies talk about that kind of shit, it's always "animals animals animals" If you guys won't give a fuck about your fellow human being, why should I give a fuck about some base animal?
>> 4tran
Global warming/pollution from the meat industry is indeed a serious problem, though it's hard to deprive our taste buds of meat.

Personally, I think the best solution is to chemically engineer artificial meat that is identical to real meat, down to the last protein/carbohydrate, maybe with some added nutrients for kicks. Such a product should be cheaper, healthier, less polluting, and better for animals. Of course, every religifag will try to b& this thing as unnatural or something. There's no animal involved, so I say it's Kosher/Halal.

I'm always curious how 'tortured' animals can produce any meat. Or rather, how tortured animals have any meat on their bones.
Being an animal welfare worker, you should know how stress effects animals. They lose weight. Their taste would be off too. Raising chickens, I know it takes little stress to get them to quit laying. Talking to a friend that raised pigs, they die easily under stress.
It's also easy to point out that animal byproducts help grow your veggies. I know they still practive making fertilizer out of bodies of baby roosters at the egg factories.
Tons of animals die nasty deaths from veggie collectors. I wished I would have saved the pics from the one site I went to. Had a collection of pics from Coyote hunts. over half of the animals were missing limbs, ears, etc from machines.
As for healthier, most veggies I've known have been lethargic. And hell, as long as you don't eat overprocessed meat products and exercise, you'll do just as well as a veggie. Problem is, few of us actually pay attention to what we eat.

About 90% of the vegetarians I know are way over weight. Two of of them are wasting away and look like they're malnourished and the other 18 or 19 are way over weight. I'm guessing they have a lot of cravings or their diet isn't satisfying, so they binge on food that is vegetarian but full of fats, sugars or both.

But absolutely none of them look healthy.

I eat meat and veg. I know that for instance, KFC have cruel practices with their animals so I don't buy KFC. There are simply other places I can buy chicken and I do that.

But I'm not giving up meat to try to somehow atone to the Chicken God for the sins of KFC. And the precious chickens, given their druthers, would be happily eating worms and bugs out in a farmyard someplace because chicken's aren't vegetarians either!

I don't feel terrible about organized farming of animals for food, we aren't going out on national hunts and depriving huge herds of noble wild animals of their right to roam noble and free....these are mass produced dumb beasts who were born and fattened for slaughter and consumption. They have no noble freedom to lose.

If you turned the average farm animal loose today, they would starve to death.

Can farm industry improve? of course. You don't have to melt the beaks off of chickens if you don't house them squashed against each other to the point they will peck each other to death. Etc, duh. Pass some laws, that's how we do it.

But don't try to make me feel bad for enjoying a nice burger. In return I won't point and laugh at the only fag at the company picnic who has to have tofu dogs cooked especially for him because he has some sort of issues.

Anyone who tries to convert the human race to vegetarianism is setting themselves for a grave disappointment. When people start dealing with absolutes, they are going to face much more resistance than if they were offering compromises.

I think the right approach is to try to get people to cut their meat and dairy consumption. You could easily have a culture where meat is not eaten every day and on every meal. If it was more of a speciality, people would appreciate it more, too. With less demand for meat, it would be possible to get all meat, dairy and egg producers to adopt humane organic methods (although it would also lead to loss of jobs, which is unavoidable).

What pushers of vegetarianism also tend to forget is that a lot of the land now used as pasture cannot produce anything fit for human consumption. If we don't keep cattle there, it'll produce nothing. And considering how huge the global population is now, and how much bigger it's going to get, we need every source of protein we can.

Doesn't the majority of the world get their protein intake from grains and legumes? How about just promoting more international cuisine? True cuisine, not the americanized versions. I think you forgot to add the word "majority" to your first sentence. Because yes, they get the majority of their protein intake from nuts or legumes. But unless they profess to a religion that prohibits eating animals, all people will do their best to get some animal proteins, even if it means eating tiny lizards and grubs.

And speaking of invertebrates, why don't we eat more of them in the west? Marine invertebrates like shrimp, crabs, clams and calamari are fucking delicious, so I doubt that caterpillars or grasshoppers could be much worse if cooked properly. I really think people should be trying harder to make inverts a normal part of the western diet. They are closer to regular meat than any kind of fake soya product, and growing them is much easier to make humane, profitable, efficient and low-carbon than any vertebrate species.

OP, would go vegetarian if vegetables tasted as good as meat. As is, no.

The biggest obstacle here would be irregular eating habits. Meat offers some grasy snacks and the like that are easy to prepare and filling. Vegetarianism would require a significantly greater amount of effort in cooking.

But even if I stopped eating meat...
Will never stop eating fish. Fish tastes awesome.
Will never give up milk or cheese. Just no goddamn way.

So it'd be half-assed at best.

I've honestly tried to cut my animal product intake. It's really quite possible to replace stuff like milk and cream (once you get over the taste differences) with soya, rice or oat products, but I still haven't found anything that even resembles cheese. I'm not going to give up dairy completely, until someone discovers non-dairy cheese that tastes at least acceptable, melts in heat and turns crispy.

Also, somebody should have come up with a way to produce artificial eggs in a lab by now. An egg is just a giant single cell. It can't be as hard as lab-culturing beef!

Hey, a quick Control + F has shown that only 3 worthless faggots have tried the PETA guilt-by-association fallacy! Good job, /an/, you're making strides everyday!

To the people making the argument that vegetarians are like "Bible-thumpers," I really have no clue what you're talking about. We are speaking in terms of verifiable fact, and opinions about right and wrong. If you disagree with us, great, let's debate (or not). It's good for both our "sides" to be well-informed about what the other camp believes.

Bible-thumpers just try to convince you to take their specific beliefs on faith--a completely invalid method of gaining knowledge. Therefore, your analogy is bad. I do agree that sometimes we get too high on the high-horse, but I think it's USUALLY because we're frustrated by continuous failed attempts at sparking honest conversation, NOT because we think we're better than you.

And, naturally, there is some percentage of people in EVERY demographic that are simply insane. Please don't base your opinion on all vegetarians off of an isolated group--that is, if you expect the same courtesy.

I love meat, and my best friend doesn't eat pork or beef. She loves animals with a passion, even more than I do so she tries her hardest to just skip meat all together.
She can't even eat fish if she sees the fish before it's prepared.

So I believe that some vegetarians are good people who make it their choice to stop eating meat. However...
People who force other people to be what they are is just despicable. YOU laid the facts out there for us of how meat is "bad" for us, and we saw it. We chose to ignore it because we chose to like meat and to eat it. Duh.
You guys have your own choice, we have our own. Get over it, you love vegetables. It's sad to let you know that a lot of people love meat.
Don't try to force everyone to eat vegetables, it's not gonna happen.

Instead this stupid idiotic thread is going to happen. There's pros and cons on both sides, get over it. You guys eat your own damn way and we'll eat our own damn way. It's that simple.

I like the taste of meat, and dislike many foods vegetarians must consume in larger quantities to get their protein.

I don't support meat farms and the like, where animals are hormonally grown and can't move, but it's really not an issue since my college buys from local organic farms.
The only reason I would become a vegetarian would be to protest unfair animal treatment, but that doesn't happen near me.
That's how I, and many other people I know feel too.

Factory farms should be illegal, definetely.
But I think it is unnatural for humans to eat only veggies. We are omnivores.

I don't have much other opinions in this as I have very little info of some things, but I've wondered,
how big areas of grounds should be used as cultivated field if every single human in this planet would be vegetarian. I mean, this is the part I don't know, but it sounds like it would mean goodbye to forests, rainforests etc.

Any ideas?

People who really care about animal welfare get off their asses and DO something, they don't stop eating meat so that they can tell people they're helping animals. Becoming vegan doesn't help animals in the slightest; there'll always be someone else out there who'll eat the burger you didn't.

So all of you people out there who think you're helping animals by not eating meat, you're not. Go volunteer or something. Be active instead of passive. It's not that hard, and it doesn't even take that much time.

Pro tip: Without eating meat, humans would have never evolved the mental capacity to use simple tools. Also, as already mentioned, unless you're actively campaigning against meat eating, you're not doing shit.

Also it will take vegetarians to stop being jack asses about their life style.

I don't think I have ever seen someone go up to another person and say "Eating vegtables?! You are a horrible person!"

I have however seen vegans/vegetarians bitch out people because they are eating meat.

Its a god damn life style. If you enjoy getting all your protein from eggs/milk/and beans. Fine. But leave me alone about my damn burger.

>>332391

You're right about one thing: I'm not a vegan. I'm not entering into that discussion, though: no one's changing anyone else's mind here. If you can, however, prove that you actively help animals by not eating meat, then by all means. I don't give two damns whether or not you're a vegan, but don't pretend to be doing more good than the next guy.

You're both correct and incorrect about the second statement; I don't volunteer with an animal welfare org., I simply volunteer to help rehabilitate baby seals and other injured or rescued animals at a local rescue centre, run by the local aquarium. We've released over forty seals this year, with about twenty to go; four this weekend. A porpoise is also under our care, and has made leaps and bounds since she arrived.

I'm also devoting the rest of my life to helping and conserving marine mammals--that is, mainly marine mammals. If I can help anything else, then I'll certainly do so if I'm able.

I'm not trying to act holier than thou, like you seem to be. Notice how I didn't draw any attention to the fact that I volunteer at all in my first post. If you're the member of an organisation like that and a vegan simply so you can parade it around on the internet as if you're better than everyone else, then you got into it for the wrong reason.

>> Anonymous
Humans are omnivores in their natural state (see any tribal human civilization)
Omnivores are animals who are required to meat and vegetables in order to function properly.
I am a human, therefore I am an omnivore, therefore I eat meat and vegetables.

I dont know how it's so fucking complicated for you vegetarian nazi faggots. If you don't want to eat meat, FINE, DON'T. But don't you dare tell me eating crap like silken tofu is good for me, despite the fact that it's proven to have horrible effects on hormones and health in general.
And don't you dare call me a murderer for doing what every fucking animal on earth does: EAT OTHER FUCKING ORGANISMS.

And as far as saving animals goes, see the Maddox article about why you're hypocrites for saying you're not murderers because you're vegetarians. Millions of animals die in the production of your food as well, sure it's less than the amount of death my diet causes, but you're still a murderer by your own standards. Better stop eating faggot.

>>332426

When you get right down to it, it's just the issue of a middleground existing. No one's ever completely right; meat CAN be bad, vegetables CAN be bad. People get so wrapped up in their own opinions that they can't--or refuse to--see both sides.

My point (I was>>332410) was that if you're a vegan because of ANIMAL RIGHTS (if not, then this is not directed at you), don't pretend as if it helps. Or fine, assuming it DOES help, it's not by any amount close to what you could be doing ACTIVELY. Go out and HELP animals, don't hope that your denial of meat is going to help them instead. It's easy to eat a salad at home and think, "Ah, I saved a cow today,", but in the end, what did you really accomplish? You ate a fucking salad.

Once again, I don't care if you're vegan or vegetarian or whatever. I have a problem with people saying they're making a difference by not eating meat, when I put all of my effort into effecting change. You go ahead and believe that those seals I helped take care of got released because you didn't eat meat. It's not true. They got released because a HUGE group of people took time out of their day to help make a difference. They're out in the ocean now, with a second chance at life, because we DIDN'T sit on our butts eating salads and hoping that things got better.
>> Anonymous
>>332434
This, my friends, is an example of an Animal Right's activist who actually makes a difference and deserves our respect. The rest are batshit insane and do more harm than good by driving the rest of us away from their causes.

I eat meat, and I always will. I've been volunteering to help animals and had those faggots actually refuse my help because I eat meat. Guess what, they probably killed more animals by not accepting my help than would have been saved by me not eating meat. Good job faggots.

My uncle is a beef farmer.

Before he went ahead and stocked his current property, he sat around for a year or so and watched the weather and his neighbours. Then he worked out a rationable, reasonable amount of stock for his land and as a consequence, it took three years of hardcore drought before he had to have his girls (as he calls them) seperated from the bulls and skip a year's calving. Because the area where where he lives has such low rainfall and poor soils and is nearly vertical in some places, bulldozing the entire property and poisoning the soil with pesticides, heavy duty fertilisers and all the other chemical additives associated with growing wheat simply wasn't practical. As a result his property still has significant amounts of wooded areas, as it provides stability for the soil, keeps the rather saline water table down and gives shade for the all important comfort and health of his girls.
>> Anonymous
>>332554cont'd

There are more birds in the trees than you'd believe. There's a dingo dog that he sees every three days like clockwork as it patrols its territory, and they leave each other alone in mutual respect. More snakes and lizards than you'd every see in one place outside of a zoo. Local environmental regulations say that farmers must leave ten percent of their property untouched. He has twenty percent of his untouched. He is obsenely proud of the amount of bush turkeys he has in those areas. He'll personally skin alive anyone he catches killing red belly black snakes, because red bellies are the bet thing in the world for keeping the brown snakes at bay, and they're pretty good at keeping the rodents down as well. He doesn't mind hunting on occasion; he goes after the massviely dangerous wild pigs that destroy properties, crops, ecosystems and livestock. Because he never overstocks his property he never has to worry about running out of feed except in the most dire of droughts. He's also very careful about not letting the fuel loading get so high that a massive fire could come through and destroy the lot.

Hmm.

Environmentalism and animal rights: two things that should mix but never really do.

I really liked your argument here, but if we go into real hardcore environmentalism, you have to ask: why cattle? Why a species that is non-native and infamous for its greenhouse gas "emissions". The obvious priority should be given to native fauna like kangaroos and emus. Of course this requires a change in eating habits and thus demand for native meats, but that would be the right way to go.

So I skipped most of this thread after a couple dozen posts that began "I have nothing against vegetarians..."

I've developed into what I like to call an Apathy Vegetarian, where I am a vegetarian mostly because I'm too lazy to go back and I've learned how to cook tasty veg food, and occasionally eat clam chowder just because it's cold and I live in New England and fuck damn is it delicious. Also a biology grad student, clams have a pretty undeveloped nervous system and don't feel pain in the same way that cows or sheep do or people do. I started at the age of 12 because I had an oversensitive stomach and I honestly hated the taste of chicken, fish, beef, etc. At the time being full of hormones I was also an Ideals Vegetarian, who basically think their way of life is less harmful to animals but aren't Asshole Vegetarians, who try to push their way of life on everyone else. While the low veg population anywhere on 4chan doesn't really surprise me, I have to say that there are a lot of us out there who lead a veg lifestyle for reasons other than ZOMG MEAT IZ MRDER. And anyhow, like I mentioned earlier, I think fake meat and soy products are delicious, try going to a restaurant that specializes in them sometime (image subtly related to NE Florida).

tl;dr - Vegetarians are a diverse and magical rainbow.

Most veggies I see are either malnourished or fat.

Meat is a necessary part of the human diet. This is proven by the fact that vegetarians and particularly vegans will become malnourished if they don't take supplements. Furthermore, veggies are only "healthier" on average, because you're comparing a group of people who regulate their diet very strictly, to everyone else, from the fat fucks to the health nuts. Meat is necessary for a healthy, natural lifestyle. Just because half of America conists of pigs choking down unhealthy fast food, doesn't make the responsible meat eaters any less healthy. In fact, I'm on a diet consisting mostly of lean meat and vegetables, and I've lost 8 kilos in 2 months, and I wasn't even overweight to begin with.
>> Anonymous
>>333259
Agreed. Meat in moderation is perfectly healthy. I only eat meat a couple times a week and beef in particular just once or twice a month (because it's more expensive, also ground turkey is better). It's the fat fucks who have to have a steak every night that ruin meateaters' reputations.
>> Anonymous
Why? because humans evolved to eat meat AND plant matter(we have the teeth to prove it), and veganism based on principle only is a misguided application of human compassion. Factory farms for fur, eggs and meat are horrible and I use my vote and my dollar to fight them. Nevertheless, animals use other animals to survive and we are no different. Also, no it isn't better for your health. We are designed to run on a balanced diet of protein and fiber with moderate calorie and fat intake. The statement that it's healthier references the average AMERICAN diet, and lets face it- just about ANYTHING could fit the description of "better for you than the average American diet"

We will never go vegan. What we CAN do is change the laws to improve the quality of life for animals in the meat industry. Right now the companies that rely on pigs/chickens/cows make so much money that they can grease palms and get their way, which is why things are in the shitty state they are in today.

The reason they don't want to make things better is simple: it costs money. Nevermind the fact that they make obscene profit, just like any greedy business they don't want to give up a few million off their billions. So it hasn't happened.

I don't agree with vegans, but I respect it. Humans eating meat is inevitable, so the best thing we can do is get laws passed to force the industry to do things the Right Way.

For the record they employ illegal immigrants who are untrained to use dangerous tools in meat processing, and when these guys get cut/hurt they just fire them. They treat their workers like shit. That huge Jew-run meat packing plant that got raided had like 4000 illegal immigrants working there, including children. So yeah, the industry is totally fucked up & corrupt.

Stop eating meat? Never. Vote to make things better? Fuck year, I'd be first in line.

Why is it that the children of vegans are always so scrawny and short with meek personalities? I've seen several dozen kids who were raised vegan and they're always like that. I'll add to that that I've never seen a vegan who looked strong in real life.

If humans were to all go vegan we would have to spend all our time eating to maintain our species current height, build, strength, and intelligence. Even then we would all probably evolve huge pot bellies like gorillas or orangs. We would also have to clear way more land for vegan farms.

No. That is not pain. You need a nervous system for pain. I can make a bot that bans you from an IRC channel if you insult in it. Does this mean the bot is offended at foul language? No. It means it bans you when you use foul language.

Plants release chemicals to protect themselves when subjected to certain stimuli. Are they hurt? No, they just release certain chemicals when subjected to certain stimuli. They have nothing with which to receive pain, neither do they have much of a need.

>> Anonymous

Either we define pain as a sensation caused by bodily damage, or we define it as a complex sensation that requires special structures in a central nervous system. If we go with former, plants do feel pain, because they do have the ability to sense when they are damaged. If we go with latter, it becomes an open question how many animals with nervous systems actually feel pain. What we human beings consider pain is something we may share with only a fraction of the animal world, mostly vertebrates.

One HUGE issue for a lot of people when considering vegetarianism is the people they live with. Honestly, it's fucking HARD to maintain it in a household of meat-eaters.
There's been two friends of mine who’ve both lived in a house of 4-5 people and tried going veggie, and only managed to keep it up for a year because it just became so hard. They would either have to cook their meals separately from others and hence miss out on pretty much every family meal, or their parents would have to cook two meals at once, putting heaps of stress on them. They just couldn't keep it up.
I myself have considered vegetarianism, but living in a house with 4 other people, not to mention all the friends that are regularly staying over for dinner, it'd just be impossible to keep up and honestly not worth it in the end. I might give it a go when I move out, but basically when you have a family you live with, vegetarianism almost isn't an option.

Honestly, as much as I care about animal welfare, vegetarianism is incredibly low priority. Instead of encouraging vegetarianism, people should just start spreading awareness of how much better well-treated animals taste, and generally fighting against factory/general cruelty. And fuck, look at the awesome meals vegetarians get at school camps and during flights compared to the canned shit the rest of us get. There's a great angle right there. Get people to become vegetarian fliers, even if no where else, and you might save a good few chooks a year.

Promoting vegetarianism itself is just fucking annoying. It's a fucking HUGE lifestyle change that honestly isn't that damn important comparatively. It's a waste of time incessantly promoting it. Focus your energy elsewhere, where it'll actually do some good.

There are few things in this world more incessantly annoying than a haughty vegetarian. Honestly out of every 10 people they try and convert, at least 5 probably decide to become full blown carnivores out of spite.

the want to eat meat is deep. men have eaten meat for as long as they can remember. most have no negative connections with meat at all. it's not something you can chase away with by saying "you'll feel better". it's just not enough. most feel good enough already, even while enjoy eating meat, so who are they to care?

it's also worth pondering that the current generation of ~20 year olds is invincible and none of your "it's dangerous for you" or "global warming lol" will ever work to convince them.

as a marketer in training, i'd try to shift the focus. what you're doing is trying to convince them that what they're doing is wrong. not only will this be met with resistance to the people you talk to, but people will actively avoid you. if you instead try to suggest that food without meat is edible as well you'd probably get a better overall feedback.

my brother is a vegetarian. i trust him probably more than anyone else because he has reads up on the things he say. he told me that if everyone in the world eats the amount of meat that is eaten today, we will run out of meat. work on this fact. find out how long our meat will last. is it a lifetime? more? less?

also, find someone who knows shit about trust and how to convince a crowd. it's worth it.

My biggest problem is that meat is delicious. I don't want to stop eating it. I also hate it how so many vegitarians clamor about animals rights and how wrong it is to eat meat, but still eat fish. Fish are animals too. Don't they deserve protection?

I tried very hard to become vegetarian. Meat justs tastes really good. If I tried to go South Beach and cut out fruit, I would also fail. It's all about what tastes good, when it comes down to it.
As a matter of fact, ALL high-energy foods are supposed to taste good. It keeps a hunter-gatherer's large brain fed. Protien- or sugar-rich, easily chewed and digested foods (fruits and cooked meat) register a "heck yes!" on our bodies chemical receptors: taste and smell.
Now, if I had someone that could cook me delicious vegan meals, I would absolutely eat them 4-6 times a day. Unfortunately, my fiance rarely gets in the kitchen and cooks something more comlpicated than spaghetti.

Fish don't have it quite as hard as factory farmed cows, pigs, chicken, etc.

People could do a lot for animals even just by buying meat from animals treated more humanely.

I'm a very pickey eater. I don't like very many things that don't have either meat, or large amounts of sugar in them. I know about factory farms, and my parents are both vegetarian for that very reason, but just about nothing tastes or sounds better when I'm tired/starving than a charbroiled cheeseburger.

You will never convince enough people to go vegetarian to have an effect on the meat industry. You want to change things? Start your own alternate industry, that focuses on raising organic products, but for an AFFORDABLE price. I love organic stuff, but it costs a fuckload, and for that reason, it isn't generally available except from health food stores.

I make less than 12,000 a year. I can't afford to eat food that I enjoy eating, that has nutritional value, and that lives up to your standards. Not if I want to continue living in a house, anyway.

We have canines and incisors for a reason.

Hence, NOM NOM NOM. MEAT IS KEWL!

Most "organic" foods is just a marketing ploy. 100% pure organically grown foods is EXTREMELY hard to grow. That's why they are so fucking expensive.

i would stop eating meat if it was hard to get.

good luck accomplishing that.

I could really care less about what is happening to animals on factory farms. Not that I'm sadistic, its more of an apathy. Animals in the wild inflict more pain and suffering on eachother than humans ever could... Have you ever seen a cat catch a mouse or chipmunk? It breaks all its legs and fucks with it until it dies. Most predators eat their prey alive. Constricters suffocate/crush their prey to death. Pain and suffering are parts of nature. In the end I don't care about how the steak got on my plate, as long as I don't get sick from eating it. Whether it went through pain, or it didn't its dead and I'm eating it.

As a matter of fact I eat tasty animals several times a day, and am great shape. Obesity is the result of laziness or gluttony, not simply eating meat. Meat also has essential vitamins and minerals, as well as concentrated protein. Meat = Muscle. It has what you need repair tissue because it IS tissue. Alternative sources of protein are insufficient as nutrients and hurt animals too... all the plants that are rich in protein are grown in fields. Think of all the habitat, homes, and animals that get ripped up by the combines from farming.

Global warming... lmao.

Besides that, quite frankly, there are more important issues that have to be solved right now than animal rights.

tl;dr: MEAT IS KEWL!

>5. It's tradition/evolution... just like rape, slavery, genocide, cannibalism, & throwing your feces at the tribe across the stream.

I advocate all of these.

'Flexitarianism', anyone?

Actually, the mass agriculturalism used to support your lifestyle is typically more damaging to the planet's biodiversity than say a ranch operation.

Think about it: to grow your precious soy, you've destroyed the habitats of MILLIONS of organisms, ultimately forcing them into overcrowded areas and wreak havoc on the areas they repopulate to. Of course, not to mention the millions more who weren't so lucky and just died anyways. So much for letting bambi starve to death or get shot for eating your precious soy.

So by "saving" animals and presenting a "better" lifestyle, you're actually helping to wipe out biodiversity on the planet. So much for double standards, huh?

Bottom line, I fucking hate vegetarians. Eating with you fucks is just like going to sunday school all over again..

There has to be some balance. Companies shouldn't treat animals cruelly and lock them up in cages all the time because they need to run around to build up muscular strength and stave off disease, and as OP should know, slaughtering sick animals and selling their meat puts our lives in danger.
True, Dr. Dean Ornish advocates a vegetarian diet as a way to stave off heart disease, but he admits he eats fish occasionally.
Plus, if we allow animals to run amok, we'll eventually start competing with them for food. The population has to be kept in check.
As for the argument that meat causes impotence, there are too any outside factors to prove that. The fact that residue from hormone-deterring drugs exist in water means that plants can absorb the chemicals just as animals can.
