Anyone know why they do it at all?

Do they just like the feeling?

It could be a lot of things. If the dog is pawing at the mouth, it could be a bone stuck at the roof of the mouth or tooth pain. Look inside the mouth and watch for broken or sick teeth. After a bath dogs often rub themselves on the ground to get rid of the awful fruity cleanliness. If the shampoo was not rinsed properly, it will irritate their skin. Sometimes they just rub themselves on the ground out of happiness.

my dog does it to wipe his mouth when he has just had a drink, he has long ears too so wiping them all over the floor gets em dry.

Before we got tiles, mine would take it a step further and wallow on the rug like a hog, complete with snorting sounds.
