Tubes. Zerachiel
Hey /an/. I went to Home Depot the other day because the Ferret tubing they sell at the pet store near me is inadequate. It's overpriced (24 bucks for 8 feet), and has little bits of plastic sticking off on each end that could be nom'd, and I wouldn't want anything to happen.

Home Depot, however, only had a choice between *tiny* PVC pipe, and metal air conditioning ductwork that felt brittle and left a subtle layer of black shit on my fingers.

I'm looking for a place, online or otherwise, where I can get tubing that'd be safe for a ferret, that preferably doesn't cost 3 dollars a foot, and if possible, is opaque. Anyone have any ideas?

Yep. I'll just consider the 350 dollars a loss, and buy a dog that'll need to be walked 5 times a day, is ten times larger, and smells about the same. Or maybe I should get a cat, so that I can enjoy claw wounds, immense shedding, and a pet that only plays on *it's* time. Sounds like a plan. Let's do this. But first, you might consider going and fucking yourself.

Also, ferrets are not even rodents, nor do they smell any worse than any other pet when de-scented and neutered/spayed (provided you're not a douche and never clean their cage, or bathe them three times a week).

Hook, line and sinker, man. He got you.
Anyway - I know little about ferrets, but I do know that pet supplies from mass-consumer stores should be avoided.
Why not go to a *proper* hardware store for some nice PVC pipes - make sure to wash them in soapy water inside and out.
Get some cardboard posting tubes at your post office - check if the ferrets could get sick from chewing on cardboard, although I doubt it.
Plain cardboard boxes with holes in them might be a nice toy.
Dryer vent hoses are flexible and tough.
Good quality dog toys - Nylabones? Tug toys and socks tied in knots for entertainment. Wash them all first though. They are not clean when they come from the store.

Ask some ferret breeders in your area (or further away) for advice - there are always bad breeders, but some will be happy to give you advice on these things and where to get them.
Also - dogs are great.

i can tell u SUPER love ur ferts (as do i i have 3:)) ... but a bath 3 times a week??? thats not good for them... there skin or there smell... its strips the oils from there skin witch means there just producing extra oils to make up for the loss and that makes them smell worse... and evan w/ a good ferret or baby shampoo its not good on there skin... it can cause them to get dry skin problems and what have u... now i am in no way shape or form bashing ur ferret keeping skills... becouse u obviously love them to go to this length to find adequate tubbing (by the way dryer hose will work grate u can get it at a home depot and its see through and u can get any length ) but id reconsider cutting there bathing down to once a month at most its just no good for them more often then that... i bath my babys evry onth and a half 2 months ish and u cant smell them at all in my house (and my house is TEEEEEEEENY) good luck w/ ur fur kids!

Go to ferret.com (yes its legit), get the marshalls tunnel thingy, its see through.

What I did was went to lows and got one of the aluminum hoses that they have for dryers. Sure its not see through.. But my ferrets liked sleeping in there when they were out and tired because it was dark.

I suggest when you are shopping on that site, ferret.com, also nab one of those octoplays (its one of my ferrets favorites, thats the only place he'll go to sleep)

Your post took forever for me to read just because its so..ugh. It almost made my head explodes!

Anyways they do NOT sell see through dryer hoses anymore, they are fire hazards now. The only ones you can get are the aluminum dryer hose.

Yes, do DEFINATELY cut down the baths. If you want to help repair the damage done to their skin, use a little bit of baby oil and rub it gently into their fur. It will trick their body into thinking that it doesn't need to produce the extra oils and help reverse the damage done.

As for toys, I have two ferrets. I took $30 and went to the local hardware store and bought twenty feet of PVC and some joints. Make sure you sand the joints free of any bits left after cutting. Also, I didn't bother gluing them together in a permenant configuration. If you get 3" or 4" tubing (I got 3 and it works just fine) then it will be plenty big enough. But don't glue it together, because then you can disassemble it, and rearrange it. Good PVC tubing and joints will fit snugly together, and you don't have to worry about them pushing it apart. It's cheap, it's effective, and they love it.

Whoa, whoa. I didn't say I bathed my ferret 3 times a week, haha. Read it again. I was saying that a lot of people that complain about the smell bathe their ferret a lot (I used 3 times a week as an exaggerated example). I know that bathing them makes them overproduce the scent to compensate. It's cool. Heh.

The thing is, I'll need to find a more independently run hardware store in the Fort Lauderdale area.

The people at Home Depot looked at me like I was crazy for asking for bigger flexible PVC piping, or for air conditioning tubing that wasn't made of metal and fail.

Also, I wasn't really angry at>>249110. I just figured that I'd cover any other possible "buy a dog/cat/owlbeast/chupacabra, they make better pets" replies. Heh.
