I'm interested in getting a cat, but unfortunately I know next to nothing about them (basic care aside). I have two dogs (labradors) though the older one won't be around for much longer I think, and the younger one is terribly affectionate to anything. My mother generally dislikes cats, so I would like a breed that is friendly, low maintinence, playful and well tempered. Can you please help me, /an/?

Pick semi-related, it the younger lab.

Consider a cat from a shelter or a rescue group. If you opt for a kitten, it'll grow up with your dogs and be adjusted to them. If you look for a slightly older cat, most rescue organizations will know about a cat's history - whether or not they get along with dogs, their personalities overall, etc.

Cats aren't like dogs with the whole breed definition thing. Some of them stand out, but mostly just in appearance.. e.g. maine coons, siamese, sphynx, etc. Most cats are just.. you know, cats, and the only thing that really differs are their coat types. Everything else comes down to their individual personalities which aren't necessarily the same across the board, even within a single breed.

Hairless cat.
No really, they're really nice, I heard, they don't shed, and aren't annoying, from what I heard.
They also aren't that ugly, I don't have one, but, I do want one.

Go with a male :] Males are generally better first-time cats; less moody and more generally affectionate.

As for breed, any breed will do! Go with a rescue, and I'm sure you will be just as happy as with any purebred. And if you're really set on a purebred, go to the book store and look over a book about breeds.

I have a manx and he's seriously the sweetest, most affectionate little thing ever. I want to clone him so that other pet owners can know that joy that is this cat.
