I am thinking that I am going to adopt a dog tomorrow. She is the most pathetic looking dog at the pound. She has only 3 legs, and a weird looking growth on her back left leg. She is in the pound because she was confiscated by the county for neglect. She is also the only dog in there that doesn't have a bed or blanket to sleep on. Just the cold concrete.

The look she gave when I first saw her was soooo sad. I can't escape her image in my mind. I guess tomorrow, I will have my first dog, a three legged dog. Not quite what I was expecting to have.

You should vist pet harbor and save someone too.

be careful adopting the most pathetic dog you can find, they often have emotional problems that make them hard to take care of.

I am. And I appreciate your input. I will go over her tomorrow with a fine toothed comb before I take her home.

Good on you OP, special needs animals are always the worst off when it comes to adoption time. You gotta be ready to be very patient with it though, it won't accept you as a part of it's pack for a very long time until it gains your trust, and it'll need constant supervision.

I recommend reading up on what it's like to take care of a previously neglected dog. Her behaviour will be quite different for a fairly long time before she adjusts to you, and even then she may revert to back that state in moments of excitement and panic. You may also want to look into the growth in her leg.

Regardless, I really respect what you're doing and I wish you the best of luck in taking care of her.

Fuck you OP
You think somebody is gonna kiss your ass and think you are so cool for adopting the "most pathetic looking dog at the pound?" I can see you casually mentioning this in conversation around members of the opposite sex like a fucking douche...either that or you have some psychcosis.
Let that dog get put down and adopt one of the fucking billion puppies/dogs that are going to get put down tomorrow despite being healthy and well adjusted.

OP here,

I got crushed today when I called the pound and found out it was too late. They had already "transfered" her. He wouldn't give any more info than that. Take it for what it is, but my heart was broken. I really thought I was going to get my first dog, and I should consider adopting another instead, but I think I will fall back and regroup before I try again.

I picked her because I thought she didn't have as much of a chance as the other dogs did, I guess I was right. She didn't get near as many days as the other dogs, but then again they probably thought "who wants a three legged dog with a growth on her hind quarters".

Funny thing about regret, It's better to regret something you have done, than something you didn't.

I somewhat agree with this guy's sentiments. I think it's best for that dog that it gets put down rather than living on borrowed time. That growth's not going to go away and it won't live that long because of the mistreatment it suffered in the past.

OP here again,

I got an email from one of the local dog rescue groups and they got her!!! I feel so much better now. Today I am going to go to the pound to get another dog. And this one will be a good one with all four legs. I will post a pic of her/him when I get back with it tonight :)

OP again,

Here is the dog I settled for. It's name is "Buster" and he is a 2 yr. old Beagle mix. So far he has been a blast to hang out with, and no bad habbits have surfaced... yet.

I think he will be a great dog.

when I was a kid my dad decided to get us a family dog from the pound, which turned out to be a mutt that had been heavily abused, the owner having found amusement in starving her for days, then put food out for her and shoot at her with a gun when she'd come for it. We had her for 7 or 8 years before she wouldn't bolt if you walked in on her eating. Other than that, she was just really timid but eventually warmed up to us after a couple of months of her living in the backyard and sleeping in a warm house with regular food and water, and we didn't try to force anything. She came to us when she was ready.

OP again,

So far the dog is great. But he does have the desire to run if he can get away. I do have a fenced in back year, but he could dig out fairly easily if he really wanted to. So the question is... do you think he will always want to run away??? or do you think he will mellow out once he fianlly realizes this is his permanent home?

He is a Hurricane Ike refugee, and hasn't had a permanent home for a couple of months now, so I like to think there is hope he will quit rrying to bust out. But then again he may just be one of those dogs that always try to run when they can regardless.

I had my last dog for about 5 years, and he never stopped running away. He was adopted from the local shelter, they'd found him running around in a parking lot. 5 years later, he was still digging under the fence, still darting out the door. He finally slipped out one day when we had a friend housesitting for us and we never found him. Some dogs are just like that, I guess.

Just keep an eye on him and see if he digs at the fence. If not, I wouldn't worry about it.
