Even if the animal is currently endangered now, if the animal was killed a certain number of years prior, and also if you have proper documentation as to the origin and source of the animal skins, you will be fine. Even then, you may not be able to cross state lines, and unless we're talking alligator hide bags and mink coats, it will never be able to cross the border.
As to how long ago the animal must've been killed and the necessary documentation, this depends on your state and the animal skins in question.
Generally, the rule of thumb is that if someone sold it in a legitimate fashion to you, you are most likely allowed to possess and resell it in a legitimate manner within same state.
