Dear /an/,

I've kept a 6 gallon fish tank for the past 4 years with various tetra, an angelfish, and plecos. About a month ago I decided the two remaining tetra needed companions so I added some bloodfin tetra and a new pleco from a PetSmart or something. Anyway, I never had snails, but I did have some other weird egg-like-looking teeny animal things when the tank got dirty that I'd just clean out and they'd die off. Now, after never having snails and only introducing the new pleco and tetras, I have at least 10 snails (I think they are snails but my camera lacks manual focus and refuses to take a picture of them on the plexiglass) in the tank.

WHERE ARE THEY FROM? SPACE? Did one or two maybe get scooped up with the fish from the store and I didn't notice I added them a month ago? Should I bother getting rid of them or are they good for my little ecosystem?

I've never seen snails cause problems before. They eat algae that grows on the side of the tank, keeping it clean a little longer, and they don't bother other fish. I'd say keep them.

burn them, burn them all!

I think I will let them be. My pleco takes care of the algae really well and I only have fake plants in the tank. I feed the fish flakes so I don't think the snails eating leftover fish food will be a problem.

1. you got the snails with the water or a leaf. There were eggs in or on it.

2. snails are ok in a fishtank unless they start mass-producing.
If they do, it is a good indicator that something might be wrong with your setup.
However, they are a good clean up crew and will take care of waste.

if ever you want to get rid of snails, just by some loaches. Yo-yos, skunk, clown loaches, most take care of snail problems. Sticking pennies in the tank could make your fish sick. They do make copper-based chemicals that get rid of pesky invertebrates and parasites, but to use it, you have to remove all the carbon in your filter and you make your tank vulnerable to filth. Considering you already have so many fish for only a 6 gallon tank, I'd use the chemicals.
