Please help me with some information.

I caught this spider yesterday, and decided to keep him for a while. yesterday i fed him with a silverfish and he sucked it all up (literally). today i can't find any live bugs around the house.what should i give him to eat? also, does he need some water or does he get the water with the food?
And at last, can you tell me which species is he?

pic related, the squares are 5x5 mm.

Feed him fire.
>> Anonymous
no.

i caught a grasshopper now. i'll feed it to him and record it.
>> Anonymous
as soon i put the grasshopper in the jar ir got scared and hid itself as far from the spider as possible. the spider is not interested in it though.
>> Anonymous
1. Remove grasshopper from jar.
2. Drop lit match in jar.
3. ???
4. Profit!

now they're ignoring each other. oh well, the spider will get hungry eventually.

the jar is made of plastic, it would melt. :(
>> Anonymous
they have become friends. great, now i have to provide twice more food. :/

The grasshopper is probably too big prey.
Try something smaller or get something from the petshop if you like, for example small crickets, mealworms etc.

1.Do not feed the spider.
2.Spider eats hopper.
3.???
4.Problem solved, profit.

i don't want to spend money. i'll try to get something smaller in the evening. in the meantime the situation might change and the spider will attack.

Can you get a picture of it with better lighting? That, plus world location, would enable us to guess what kind of spider you have, other than "alive" or "fishing recluse named biscuit"

It's likely that the grasshopper is too large of is of a species that the spider does not eat. Some grasshoppers can 'spit' a nasty substance that may have convinced the spider he is not delicious. You're better off going to a local pet store and spending a dime on a crickets. Seriously, most of the time you can get them for 5c each in the US, if not less.

Also, this is a brown recluse. Your spider does not appear to be one, nor does it resemble a black widow, so it should be somewhat safe to handle. It will still hurt like fuck if it bites you, but you don't have to worry about dying.

it's an accurate lightning, the spider is almost black. i live in Slovenia (central/SE europe). will try to get crickets tomorrow.

Another thing to keep in mind is that spiders don't have a huge hole in their gut, so they don't need to eat every day. If you are going to keep the spider atleast make put him in a larger cage and try to set up an environment. I suggest you just let him go though: You don't have any idea if it is deadly or not, it's a male and was probably on his way for some nookie when you caught him, and average spiders of that size do not live long, especially in captivity.

i'm pretty sure it's not (too) poisonous. also what shoul this artificial environment look like, regarding it's a house spider?

>>154526
It may be accurate, but it's difficult to tell the markings on the back of the spider. It looks like it may be a wolf or trapdoor spider, though it's spinnerets look a bit small for the latter.

Regardless of particular species, it would love something to hide in. Give it a thimble or some leaves or something at the very least. A 10gal (fuck you and your litres) tank with soil in the bottom and some plants from your yard would be great. Try and replicate the area where you found him.
>>154528
I'm curious as to why you think it's male and think it will die soon. Some spiders can get quite large, and it may be a juvenile. Of course, it IS possible it's an elderly spider of a small species and on its way to die, but then, maybe not. I do agree it's best to let it go, though.

okay so i'm gonna search for a transparent plastic box now. i hope i get something decent.

Look at the enlarged pedipalps. It is easy to tell male and female apart in most species of spiders due to the fact that male pedipalps resemble boxing gloves. This is where they store the sperm. Why I think it will die soon is because male spiders have a very short life after maturity. They spend all their energy looking for a mate while the females just sit back and relax waiting for the male. Of course not all species are like this.

here, the spider's new shelter.

how many air holes should i make until i get a net for the top?
>> Anonymous
just a few should be fine

When winter comes you can buy crickets from bait shops and pet stores or you could buy a spider that is actually cool like a tarantula.
>> Anonymous
>>154569
that means spending monays. also then i would need to buy a bigger terrarium, some lights for keeping him warm...
>> Anonymous
You don't have to feed him every day.
once or twice a week is more than enough for spiders.

thanks for that.

minor update: the spider has found his resting place, marked with red. the grassopper however is wandering all over the box.

I once put a west australian huntsman in a jar with a golden orb spider

If you are really that interested in keeping a spider, you should listen to>>154569and buy a mygalomorph. They live up to 30 years and are more interesting than a small house spider. IF you are concerned about the price it wont cost you more than about 50 US dollars to set up a terrarium. A G. Rosea (beginner spider) is about 25 U.S. dollars, a 10 gallon tank is about 15 U.S. dollars, as for heating the tank use under tank heaters (which can't be that expensive, the two I have were given to me) as heat lamps dry the terrarium out. And sand and dirt can be found anywhere.

You CAN feed him every day if you want, but more than likely he will just stop eating after a while if you do that, and it can be hard to find bugs every day to feed it.

Also, some spiders tend to fast every now and then, so don't worry if he goes up to a month without eating.
>> Anonymous
>>154596
thanks, i'll go to the pet shop tomorrow and ask about them.
>>154598
yeah i figuerd that out. he lets the grasshopper alone for now, but he'll eventually catch it.
>> Anonymous
>>154591
i think it would be enough, just remember to refill it.
>> Anonymous
UPDATE: the spider made a web overnight. i suppose it's a goood sign.
>> Anonymous
could be amaurobius ferox.
>> Anonymous
>>154992
i dont think so, it's a little too big. male length is about 11 mm. the OP's spider is at least 2 cm long. or maybe the legs don't count?
