I'm on the Indiana border. Quite a trek, little armadillo. Glad no one hit him.

I fucking hit one of these last night on the highway in Atlanta :( Poor bastard.

The armor did nothing! NOTHING!!

I've never seen an armadillo IRL. It's one of those animals that I don't feel I've experienced just seeing pictures of it, because it's just too strange.
But I don't know if there are any zoos or anything with them in California so I will have to endure this mystery for a while.

Wow, you must live in the city or something. I have had one walk across my yard and my old dog kept trying to pick it up but he didn't have any teeth. The armadillo was completely unconcerned.

I live in FL. they run around alot. I love to have one as a pet. they are alot like rats. giant, armor plated rats you can take on walks and show off how cool your rat is.

You know that armadillos are the only other animal that can get leprosy?
>> Anonymous
carry leprosy and their reaction to being startled by a car harmlessly driving over them is to jump, squishing themselves. Thus I have seen them live only rarely but dead on roadsides quite often (in TX). Also state animal of Texas.

Not true. Squirrels and Racoons are also commonly killed by leprosy. Leprosy can infect a large range of mammals that have lower body temperatures. Armadillos happen to have low body temperatures.

I smell bullshit.

Squirrels and raccoons don't contract leprosy.

My grandfather hates these things because they tear up his lawn. Whenever he's driving and sees one he makes sure he hits it and whenever I visit I end up waking to the sound of gunshots at 4 AM. He also pays some of my relatives for each kill. He's from Florida, too.

From wikipedia. I may have been wrong about squirrels and raccoons. Was recalling from memory. But other animals do contract leprosy.

Armadillos are often used in the study of leprosy, since they, along with mangabey monkeys, rabbits and mice (on their footpads), are among the few known non-human animal species that can contract the disease systemically. They are particularly susceptible due to their unusually low body temperature, which is hospitable to the leprosy bacterium.
