Hi /an/. I bought a 'mini-crab' from petsmart today. I was told that I need both water and land for the crab. I've set up a nice little tank for it.

Other than that, I know nothing about this. It isn't a fiddler crab, because I've compared pictures. I bought crab bites and he eats them with his little claws.

Does anyone know anything else about these pets?

pic related- looks like him, but with different claws and legs

Your crab will find a way to crawl out of its habitat and you will step on it in the night, or your cat will eat it, or both.

This is a fact. Buy as many crabs as you like. They'll all die this way.

There's no way out. It's house is escape-proof. Also, it's just hiding under it's rock right now.

And I don't have a cat.

I'm sure you'll get some good answers here but do google too so you can fully learn about the needed water

Thanks. I don't think it's a Fiddler crab though, but I'll read anyways.

Oh wow I'm an idiot
I again see that you said it isn't a fiddler

I think they still like brackish water though so look into that

Here's a picture. I can't find anything on what type of crab this is, and any type of care :\.

You could try going back to PetSmart and asking what type of crab it is and how they kept it. It's probably best to find out exactly what you're taking care of. Really though, it doesn't seem like there'll be that much more you should do for it. Pets need food and water and you seem to have that covered. Make sure it's always fresh. Also, you'll probably need to clean the tank every once and a while. This is all general pet advice, but I can't think of anything else you might need to know. I figure if there was some secret crab ritual that it absolutely need to live, the people working at PetSmart would have known to tell you about it when you bought your crab.

Ghost crab maybe...although it doesn't seem to have one larger claw.

1) why did you buy an animal you don't know
2) how come the this petstore didn't have any info of it?

Stuuuuuupid. At the cost of animal, no matter how "simple and stupid".

Petsmart typically carries Red Claw Crabs so it's probably that or a fiddler. I know you don't think you have a fiddler crab, but yours looks really pale as though it's stressed, or perhaps molted recently.. something. In any case, I don't think that's how that crab should typically look.

I really don't think a tiny fishbowl with stagnant water is a good habitat for that animal. You should, at the very least, have a filter for it. Such a small amount of water is also going to be difficult to regulate, salt-wise.

You've got a 14 day guarantee on that thing if you got it from Petsmart -- take it back and write a letter to the corporate office about how your store failed to make sure you knew what you were doing.

This happened to me twice. BUT it was a hermit crab and survived me stepping on it twice when it was near my computer. It loved my computer for some reason.

It's fun to fill a box full of full-sized crabs and watch them dismember each other.

Finally, a question about marine invertebrates, my time to shine. While it's hard to tell without an overhead shot, you seem to have some kind of shore crab, probably a wharf crab but possibly, as mentioned earlier a ghost crab, or maybe a gulfweed crab. Look at this guy from overhead, if his shell tapers at all he's a gulfweed. If it's squarish, see if you can't measure the space between the eyestalks in comparison to the lengths of the actual eyestalks themselves. If the space between the two eyestalks is much shorter than the eyestalks themselves, it's a ghost crab (but, there should be a pronounced size difference between the two claws, it'll become more obvious as he/she ages). From what I can see here, the eyestalks look longer, so I'd call it a wharf crab. Also check and see if its legs are furry at all, that's a dead giveaway that it's related to marsh crabs, in the genus Sesarma with wharfies.

FFS, put a bubbler in there, or get him/her a proper aquarium. Take it from someone who's had to keep several tanks full of crabs happy, they can foul just about anything at light speed. Complex habitat is good, most shore crabs love to hide under things or burrow in pebbles. Processed food is good, but if you live near the ocean you can probably find enough snails/mussels/barnacle to keep him/her fat and happy.

They should have given you a pamphlet on its care. It needs at least a 10 gallon.

A long time ago I thought about getting a "mini crab", but couldn't find any actual information about it online. An aquarium guy (not from the store) told me its some type of fiddler that's imported, they need slightly brackish water and warmth. They're pretty aggressive but like to eat anything, at the store I would sometimes throw a small cricket to the crabs, they would pull it apart and eat it.

Just work on getting him a bigger tank, at least a 5 gal, a cheap filter.

OP here. Thanks a lot guys. I really appreciate the help from a few of you. I'm going to go and get it a bigger tank today. I feel bad for keeping it in that bowl.

I think you're right. I think it's a wharf crab as you described.

I'll post pics of the new tank once I get it set up.

Thanks again.

The last time I was at Petsmart they had a few of these foam islands avaliable-- most in 10 gallon sizes. Try looking for something like this maybe?

Its a fiddler crab.
Mini crab is just a name they bullshitted.
Keep in mind they need brackish water, and don't live long in fresh.
>> Anonymous
oh, almost forgot, female fiddlers don't have the huge claw.

That looks nice. You need to might need to make the bridge easier for the crab to get onto though.

That real plant you have in there isn't a water plant. It's a peacock fern and it will die fairly soon.

Thanks guys. I really appreciate the help. I can always count on you /an/!

>>334765
Thanks. I did. I rearranged the cage and made a ramp for the crab. I emptied a lot of the water too, so I know she can get out.

and OH SHI-
I hate petsmart. They always lie to me.
"ANY OF THESE PLANTZ WILL DO"
Thanks for the tip anon.
