My cat accidentally got out of my house last night and got into a fight with another cat. This morning I realized he has some swelling at the base of his tail, and he wont let me touch it... I think it's broken. He moves his tail, but it is obviously tender. I won't be able to take him to the vet till tomorrow, has anyone ever had experience with a broken tail? What can the vet do but give him a painkiller and charge me alot of money for x-rays? Halp!
pic related, it's my cat Minion

I'd give it a couple days, most of the time the tail can heal on its own.

Your cat could have caught diseases from the other cats bites possibly, like feline aids and such. Does your cat have those shots?

yes, he has had all his shots. is there an over the counter painkiller that I could give him?

I don't think they make cat aspirin... if you're worried, call a vets office and ask them if what you describe about your cat warrants a trip to the emergency vet. Please post back what they say too.

OP here, the vet said to wait a few says and to bring him in if the swelling doesn't go down on it's own. He said he could give him a shot for pain but it would only last about 3-4 hours. I guess I'll have to wait and see... I'll post updates as I have them, thanks for the support /an/.
yesterdays /b/ pic, head on shoe, lol.

Check really thoroughly for punctures, just to be safe. This happened to my cat once too and I didn't notice she had this tiny, tiny puncture wound on her until she was sick with infection.

Something like that happened to my cat a few years ago, but it was alot more than swollen >_>; She ended up having to have about 2/3 of her tail removed. Good luck with yours!

It's very common for a bite on the tail to be mistaken for a break. The puncture wounds will be small and very difficult to see without shaving the cats tail. Sometimes swelling can make it look like the tail is kinked.
The danger here is infection, the cat should be taken to the vet.

DO NOT GIVE YOUR CAT ASPIRIN OR TYLENOL OR ANYTHING. CAT LIVERS ARE NOT AS GOOD AS HUMAN/DOG LIVERS AT REMOVING TOXINS. IT WILL KILL THE CAT.

OP here, I finally got someone to help me hold Minion so I could examine his tail a little better. He does have a small puncture on the top of his tail, so I am going to take him to the vet on Monday and have him treated with antibiotics. In the meantime, I swabbed the wound with a bit of peroxide and salt water, and the swelling seems to have gone down a little. It's kind of a wait and see situation.

Beautiful kitty! I hope that doesn't happen to Minion though, he's kind of a klutz as it is, and I don't think loosing his tail would help much <3

This morning, Minion is feeling much better. The swelling is almost completely gone, and his tail doesn't seem to be tender at all. The little bastard is attacking my foot right now, so I can tell he feels a lot better. It doesn't seem to have abscessed at all. Should I still take him to the vet? (Expenses are tight this month)

you are overreacting.
cats are tough bastards.
My old grumpy got in fights all the time and had the scars to prove it.
Never took him to the vet, it heals by itself.

Minion is one of the coolest cat names I've ever heard

Reminds me of subeta... so I haet it. But I wish the creature the best, especially with an owner who needs to bug /an/ for advice when a vet's office is a phone call away.

The OPs said to bring it in if the swelling doesn't go down. You fail.

Of course, there's also the part about how legally they can't give you medical advice without actually examining the animal, since they can be sued for malpractice if they do, faggot. But nice try making a justification for lazy, cheap people who don't want to be fucking bothered with actually taking care of their animals.

You would be surprised. Not everyone on 4chan is a retarded loser in their mother's basement. Some of us have some useful knowledge.

On that note, please check your cat's tail for any swelling in the near future. A wound like the one you described might abscess, which can be extremely painful and quite gross. The worst abscess I have ever seen extended the entire length of the cat's belly, and because of his girth, no one noticed until he was picked up and.. well, split open. It was sick.

actually its a cist, when they get into a scrap sometimes a claw gets stuck in their ass or just behind their tail on the back, dont try to touch it he'll either rip ur hand off and eat it or scream and run away, just go to a vet and say you want it removed.

Truth. The dirt/bacteria/whatever in their claws essentially gets inside the skin, and causes that shit.
