Hey, have another fish question

I have one fish (Goldfish) in a 3 gallon tank.

- Algae is starting to build up on the sides, my mom bought some algae cleaner tabs but they did nothing. Is the algae harming the fish in the long run?
- How would I know if my fish is getting enough oxygen? I have no clue if it's getting enough, though it does spend quite a bit of time at the surface trying to eat something, even though there's no food. If I need an oxygen pump, what should I get?
- How many times should I feed it per day?

Algae bloom is perfectly normal in a tank that's recently been set up. Give it time to cycle, and chances are it'll go away.

Not so sure about the oxygen pump. Sorry.

And we feed our fish {All 1000+ at the shop} a little in the morning, and a little in the evening about ten minutes before lights out, and everyone seems fine.

Good luck with your goldfish! They're pretty neat once they start to get big.

I think you mean an air pump? They are sold in different sizes depending on the size of your tank. Get one designed for a small tank. Talk to your local pet store and tell them you need an air pump for a small tank, they'll help you out.

If algae is a common issue, you can get a couple of small aquatic snails. They will eat the algae in the tank and help keep the water clean.

Yea, but my fish is territorial, so chances are it will try to kill them.

try to remove most of the algae and get a bunch of plants, buy a fertilizer for aquarium plants to make the plants get the upper hand.
if your tank is exposed to direct sunlight, move it.
The fact that your fish hangs around at the surface proves that there is not enough oxygen in the water (the surface water is richer in oxygen, so it has to stay there in order not to suffocate)
In such a small tank I recommend that you get a small filter pump that pumps about 5 gallons/hour, make sure the outlet it aimed at the surface. any surface movement oxygenates the water.
feed it once or twice a day.

I suggest that you get a bigger tank though, the bigger it gets, the easier it is to take care of it. and your fish will be happier.

That's been proved wrong by quite a few scientists, though most people would know it from an episode of Mythbusters.

But yeah, get the fish tank a pump and the algae should go away.

Ask your Pet store, someone in the Aquarium section can tell you just the type of pump you'll need.

Move the fishbowl farther away from any sunlight or windows to help slow down algae growth. Make sure you are not overfeeding your fish at all, too much of their waste will help algae grow more. Clean the bowl out and change your water often!! Since you arent using a water filter pump. Set aside about an eigth or tenth of the original water to pour back in for your fish.

Consider buying a baby Plecostamus Fish, your fish dealer can show you. Sucker fish tend to be more territorial than Plecostamues.

Mythbusters FTW, Goldfish certainly do have a good long memory.

plecos are not a good idea for a small tank they can get 2 foot long or more. if you get an alge eater it should be fine at the store i work at we mix them with tetras i think and they are fine. you srsly need to get a bigger tank and getting a filter will help with the algae but not get rid of it. and by adding plants like someone said isnt a good idea plants release ammonia, nitrates, and nitrites in the water so all they will do is pollute your water more and make the conditions worse, that is if you fish dosnt eat or destroy the plants. Techinally you shouldnt put an algae eater or pleco in with a goldfish anyway cuz they both eat algae so they will eat each others food. so thats what they say i havent had too big of problems with it tho. Oh and another thing about algae eaters and plecos(expecially plecos) they give off large amounts of ammonia(same as goldfish) so both of them in a fucking 3 gallon bowl is not a good idea get a bigger tank for the dammed fish. you should keep bettas in a 3 gallon bowl not goldfish

Perhaps, but a fish is not going to get that long in a small bowl rofl.

Fish only grow in proportion to their surroundings, the larger space you give them the larger they will grow.

Snails work great for algae, you just have to get the right type of snail. They are frequently used for tank cleanup in all sorts of aquariums.
