Baby bird Anonymous
What kind of a bird is this, and how do I keep it safe until I can get it to a bird sanctuary or vet's or wherever?

Hit it in the head with a brick as hard as you can until it goes unconscious. Do not worry if there is blood and brain matter everywhere that is only a feint they do to try to trick you. Only when it is sleeping peacefully will it truly be safe until you can rescue it.

Looks like a regular old "mus" in Dutch, something like a sparrow, Passer Domesticus, of the female or very young variant. My cat kills them all the time.

its a common house finch, Feed i with a straw cut as a spoon it will probably open its mouth for food. Food should be a mixture of wet cat kibble apple sauce, boiled carrots and hard boiled egg with some bird vitamins, if you have non of that wet cat food should be good enough. I rescued one of those a few weeks ago i was able to set it free at a bird sanctuary near my house. best of luck.

Just keep it in something where it can breathe, won't overheat, and won't be attacked by other animals and call a rehabber ASAP. Do not try to feed it or touch it more than you absolutely must, you could do more harm than good etc etc.

That almost looks like a fledgling. Try leaving it where you found it if it's safe. If it's still there later, then be concerned.

Nah. The parents are most likely not there anymore and these things can hop pretty fast. OP would probably just loose the bird.

I just know that I get baby birds around my house all the friggin' time, and rehabbers always tell me to leave the ones with wing feathers be. So, I dunno.

i fostered 2 house sparrows...i fed them wet dog wood with a tiny of of water...room temp. then i moved on to different foods like cherrys, mleaworms (crush mealworms heads), bread, seeds, etc. i kept them next to a window and put bread outside so my birds could observe other sparrows. i got a small cage for them and eventually started leaving them outside in the cage with food around so they can interact better with thier own kind and mimic the other birds. at night i brought them back but before you release them try letting them sleep outside in the cage so they get use to the weather outside. you can release them when they can fly pretty well and loose the yellow on the sides of thier beaks...good luck!
