Hi /an/

Could anyone help me identify this specimen? I've spent over an hour looking at ant pics to see what kind it was, but so far no luck. This thing scared the bejesus out of me earlier. Finally caught him and he looks less scary.

I never knew ants could make noises - tweeting or something is what it sounds like. creepy.

Looks like a velvet ant (they're actually wasps though), but I don't recognize the species. Females are wingless.

Look into genus Dasymutilla. They're crazy fuckers. I have a little D. occidentalis right now and had a D. gloriosa once before. They're decent pets.

Hi OP, it looks like a Cow Killer, which is really a wasp that imitates an ant.

These don't make nests. They're solitary.

They are ground based wasps that dig burrows. They form male-female pairs during mating season and are otherwise solitary. They are extremely fast and have good eyesight, making them comparable to wolf spiders at hunting. Their sting burns like fire.

You can also pick them up with tweezers and hold them near your ear (not too close, though) to hear them squeaking.

I have noticed this before by placing one in a mason jar and listening. They are very cool insects imho.

Until they escape, jump into your ear, and burrow into your brain to build a nest.

It's not an ant, it's a velvet ant and they are more related to wasps actually.
They live solitary and if you piss them off they could sting you pretty hard.
