What kind of mats are they? are they "puppy pads", the things that they are supposed to pee on? Those are terrible, absolutely terrible. If you're talking about "dog bed" type cushions.. maybe get some cheapo pillow cases and cover them. The puppies can chew on the pillow case, and you can just wash it or toss it when it gets gross.
Puppies should NEVER be outside unsupervised. Hell, I wouldn't leave a 6 month old dog outside alone for more than a few minutes, even if your yard is secure. Why? Theft and hawks. If it will fit in a hawks talons and squirms, it will try and eat it. If it MIGHT fit in its talons, it will try. People steal adorable puppies, and a friendly mom might not be much of a deterrent. (Caveat to this is a locked kennel or dog run. If you had one of those, you could leave them out.)
As another anon said, just don't let them be around anything they cannot chew on. Give them a fuckton of things that are delicious to chew on. At that age, they should be sleeping most of the time anyway.
