Fucking rats.

They don't make cages big enough to house the little bastards that can actually do a decent job of containing them. I had to basically build a second cage out of chicken wire over the cage I bought because there is very little a rat can't squeeze through.

What does everyone else use?

The cage I have for my chinchillas is much sturdier than chicken wire but has similar sized openings between the crosshatched bars, and is easily big enough for rats (5'highx4'longx2.5'deep). I forget where I got it, but it's quality, paid around $150 and well worth it, relatively light and very sturdy and comfy.

Basically, gonna have to shop online to get cages that aren't hazardous in some way or another.

I know a rat owner that recently bought a 3 level cage from petco for about 80 that is perfect for his rats, no chicken wire required.

I know, the cage looks like something out of Silent Hill ever since I fixed it.

I use large Marchioro's. Fill 'em with shit to climb on and you're good.

40 bucks for a rabbit/ferret cage from Walmartevilevilevilevil. My rats were about 6 months old and already too fat to get thru 1 inch gaps.

Make sure to piss-proof the wood, or else it sinks in and it's impossible to get the smell out.

Its not good for the rats to live on chicken wire, very bad for their feet, also isn't very nice to rest against.
