What is the smartest breed of dog?

What is the stupidest?
>> Anonymous
those ones that mountain rescue use have gotta be pretty smart.

Border collies generally considered smartest, followed by poodles. (Maybe it's other collies and then poodles, I'm not quite sure.) Huskies are also up there.

Smartest: Border Collies, Poodles, German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, Siberian Huskies

it is a fallacy that border collies are smarter then other dogs. they do have better concentration of a sort in that they will become intensly transfixed on something that interests them which makes them quite hard to teach in fact, but if you can get them to pay attention to you they will learn very quick and will be good at the task.

they are also natural herders. it is instinctive to them. having a collie myself and having had many friends who have them also i can tell you straight off they are about the worst dog you can choose as a pet. if you are not going to work a collie (as in herding or atleast agility sports) you will be constantly faced with a hyperactive neurotic animal. it is not really enough to just walk them unfortunatly as they have nearly unending stamina. i know you are not saying you want one as a pet i just like to take every oppertunity to tell people not to get a collie.

I hear tell that pugs are the stupidest. I worked with someone who's mother raised them, and she said sometimes the puppies couldn't figure out how to nurse.

Take this nonsense to /n/ or /b/, sir, the peace-loving people of /an/ will have none of it.

Some petshop guy told me beagles are stupid, and one of my friends has one...and he's right.

Have you personally owned a border collie, or are you just pulling words of your ass based on what other people have said? Has it occurred to you they all have different temperaments and athletic ability/drive?

I have a PET border collie. I am active but not obscenely so. He is active but not obscenely so either. When I was looking at border collie rescues, I noticed only some of them are labeled as "sports potential" dogs. There are more athletes among border collies than other breeds, but to tell people not to get such a potentially rewarding dog because of that is bullshit. They require much more work than other breeds, but there ARE many individuals among the breed that make very, very good pets.

When I was like, 8-12, my neighbors had this absolutely awesome boarder collie named Daisy. She was such a damned good dog.

She took care of all the kids in the neighborhood. She'd walk with me to the gas station or mall, and sit intently at the door stairing in waiting for me untill I came out.

One time I got lost a few neighborhoods down, and she found me and took me home.

She somehow knew everyone's name too. You could say "go find Chris" and she'd take off and find the person and nudge them back.

Also, if you held your hand out, she'd put her paw up to shake your hand. Her owners always said she had no training at all.

I went back a couple years ago to see how she was -had a crush on the girl that owned her, also- and she died at 15 or 16 of old age.

My friend had a pug and it was adorable but just dumb as mud.

It ran into the closed screen door going full speed a few times.

It's behavioral too though...it's hard to consider them smart when they have that hilarious face and they grunt and snort.

Haha, my own border collie has learned things like "go find Chris" except it's "go get your ball" "where's Kiki (our cat)", etc. We didn't really even try that hard to teach him these words, he basically taught himself.

Dachshunds will learn that too.

Most dogs can learn most things with enough patience. Some are typically "smarter" (learn faster, perform more readily) than others. As far as speed of learning and carrying out commands, border collies tend to perform the best. But that isn't to say other dogs can't learn as well.

Most dogs are stupid. You can see it in their eyes. Dogs who value independence and are considered to be troublesome for disobeying orders are probably a cut above the rest.
Still they're dogs.
