What the hell is wrong with our nature documentaries? I haven't seen a documentary on television yet that hasn't stooped to using extreeeeeme marketing to make it's subject matter "interesting" by re-emphasizing "what the documentary is about" over and over, using dramatic camera angles, poorly animated dinosaurs (don't need them), and asshole hosts that like to talk about how much danger they are in.

It's supposed to entertain the idiots I guess, people who don't watch them to learn.

>It's supposed to entertain the idiots

But isn't that what television is all about; entertainment.

One thing I am sick of is people who do not realise that the words 'educational television' is an oxymoron when combined.

If you seriously want to learn something I personally suggest reading. It is a lot quicker than a television 'documentary' as you can read through a normal television script in less than 10 minutes, just a few minutes if you are an experienced reader.

bookchan often has a lot of good books as does the astalavista.ms forum and torrents on isohunt along with trying through google.

Sigh..It can only be an oxymoron if they're combined. But besides that, television can be an effective learning tool, as long as it's designed and executed the right way. You are correct that television is all about entertainment, and that's what makes it so powerful. It is easier to learn when it's exciting and fun, which is why hands-on education is often effective.
The problem with documentaries is that they are expensive to make (consider the cost of equipment, travel, supplies, and that many nature documentaries can take 6+ months to complete, if not more than a year) and need to make enough money to cover their expenses. If they aren't fun, viewers will feel like they're stuck in their high school biology class again. Unfortunately, what's fun for one isn't fun for another.

Then again, I like "The Most Extreme" on Animal Planet.

Yeah, it's really a "lowest common denominator" type thing. Not that I blame the networks, as that's the only kind of thing that'll fetch any real dough. Which is why PBS always has the really intellectual shows. Like Dragon Tales!

what happened to the good old days when nature shows just showed footage of monkeys fucking or a lion taking down a gazelle?

The animals are always more interesting than the host.

Exactly, we don't need some asshole with a British accent walking around in the bush acting hardcore.

I watch Wild America reruns every Saturday morning at 5 AM. Marty Stouffer was the perfect host.
