I had a pet Chilean Rose tarantula named Clarissa for 14 years, she died peacefully this Thanksgiving at the age of 17. I know quite a bit about then and have several books on the subject. What would you like to know

Are you able to handle them? I live in Australia, we don't have tarantulas here.

Well, my mexican red knee is gonna molt really soon so I was just wanting to make sure I've prepared properly.
>> 6Bagheera9
>>193910It depends on the species, the individual spider, and your experience at handling tarantulas. Old world tarantulas are often ill-tempered and best left alone, but there are many new world species that can be safely handled if you know what you are doing. Australia does not have any native "true" tarantulas, but they do have a few species of large spiders, such as the funnel-web spider, that are closely related to them. Unfortunately, like most things and Australia, they are EXTREMELY poisonous and worse yet VERY aggressive. I'd personally do everything possible to avoid them and seek medical attention IMMEDIATELY if one bites you.

Remove all crickets and other food items from its terrarium and make sure the spider has easy access to water. Then just leave the tarantula alone, in a couple of hours it should pull free of its old exoskeleton which you can then remove to look at. I also would not try to feed your spider until tomorrow, it needs some time to rest and allow its needs carapace to harden. You should be able to find several books about Tarantulas and keeping them as pets on Amazon or possibly the pet shop you got it from.

thanks for the advice, so would it be a good idea to spray the cage down a little? and do i need to keep the cage warm or does it not matter?
>> 6Bagheera9
>>193926Misting the cage gently, not directly at the spider, would be a good way to humidify the air and that can help the molting go more smoothly. With regard to heat, I'd keep the lamp on, but not any brighter than usual. The spider knows what its doing and should be fine without too much help from you.
