Im starting an aquarium but I don't know what water I should use. I don't think fish like tap water... any suggestions?

It depends...
If you are going to get cold-water fishes, just plain "cold" tap water is fine (you could get some tap water to your nearest aqua-store and let them test it).
If your going to get warm-water fish, you do the same like with cold-water fish but you have to buy a device wich warms the water + a thermometer to check the temperature.
Lastly, if your going to buy sea-water fish, thats a whole other thing...
You have to buy special pumps, machines, etc... to extract different kinds of filth/nutrients out of the water that aren't good for sea-water fishes (and other sea-creatures), and it requires "a lot" of maintenance (I know 'cause I own one)...
I hope I was helpful ^^
For that you should best get some info in a specialized store!!

Buy that stuff from the pet store that neutralizes most tap water issues.

i second you go to a clean, specialized fish store with an aquarist who can answer your questions. they can recommend hardy fish who are or will grow to be the appropriate size for your tank. don't get too caught up in a certain fish or environment right off the bat- your aquarium might be too small or otherwise insufficient for the fish. it is essential to tell the aquarist what materials you already have and that it's your first aquarium.

also, get a book on your selected fish before you commit to buying the entire works. this will help later on in regular tank maintenance and if your fish gets sick and the pet store isn't open.
