Okay guys, my turtle's grown wayyyy too big for her tank and I'm pretty much at a loss about what I gotta do. Durr, get a bigger tank but there's much more to it than that.

Alright, so how big of a tank should I get? I can't keep her inside the house, and also I have a dog that I'm sure would try to drink the water if I kept the tank on the ground or something. I can't build for crap so it has to be one I could buy.
Also, where the hell do I buy such a huge tank?
How hard is it to clean a huge tank? It's already hard for me to lift the one she has already.
If I think of anymore questions, I'll bump with them.

Pic related, it's her. Yeah, I know she doesn't have any rocks. She used to eat them. No perch thing or whatever it's called either because she's grown too big for me to keep one in there plus she'd use it to climb out of the tank.

OK. It looks like you have either a yellow belly slider or a red ear slider.

Did you get your turtle about a year ago? It looks about the size of mine that I got in August. They told me it would only grow a few inches and only live 3 years. Yeah- it will be 1 foot and 35 years. But anyways.

By the time your turtle reaches about a foot, you are supposed to have AT LEAST a 60-gallon tank. Usually it is supposed to be about 120 gallons by the time it gets full sized. Also, you NEED to keep your turtle outside to get some sun, or you need a UV light (special light bulb) on your tank, otherwise it will get soft shell, which is fatal.

You can buy these things at Petsmart, I am personally by an Aquarium World. Just look in the phone book. Tanks aren't too hard to clean. You can get a turtle waste degrader to put in your tank, too. Also, there is something called an "under-rock filter" which is a HUGE help in cleaning tanks. You will also need a regular filter, and make sure your turtle has something to climb on to get out of the water if it wants too.

Finally, make sure you aren't feeding it too much protein, feed it lots of plants (which you can also buy at Petsmart) and don't feed it too much. You can tell if it is getting too fat if its back legs have rolls.

Good luck! And you can ask any petsmart worker or the rest of the internets for more info.

Search Craigslist for cheap, large tanks. The one for my area currently has a 155gal + lid and stand for $100.

If you find you can't afford a tank, I second getting a huge rubbermaid tub until you can.

And tanks really aren't that hard to keep clean as long as you do regular maintenance. But let it slack and woooo boy D:

This.
I hate people buying cute 2" turtles, and not realize the fact that they'll grow to the size of a plate. (If they manage to not kill them off in the process).

Are there actualy any turtle that will stay at 2-4" max, and would be reasonably available in a pet trade?

Not that I know of. The only one I can think of that stays small is super endangered, and I can't even remember the name. Just remember pictures.

Answering my own question, seems that mud turtles ar the way to go - 5" max, not overly active, will do fine in 30 gallon tank.

Note that many in most states turtles 4" or smaller are illegal.

Why the fuck are you lifting the tank every time you clean it anyway? Goddamnit you're fucking stupid, OP.

Why the sage? Are you an asshole or something? This isn't the OP btw, I just don't deal well with dicks. Yeah, I know this isn't the site for me.

Seconding the craigslist thing. People are trying to get rid of huge tanks all the time. Or just.. hell, walk into Petco or Petsmart. If they don't have one, you can ask them to order one for you.

Also, plz stop moving the tank to change the water. Good lord, man. Just get a hose, and a large bucket. Put the bucket lower than the tank, and let the hose and gravity pull out the tank water for you.
If i can get water out of a hot tub doing this, you can certainly change a few gallons of water in a turtle tank.
