Problem Anonymous
I recently have received a leopard gecko from an owner who was treating it for an infection. It has two enlarged areas near the hemipenes and they had been giving it baytril as prescribed by a vet. They eventually just got tired of treating it. Treatment was continued by a friend at the humane society and now it has ended up in my hands.

Has anyone had a similar problem with their leopard gecko? If not for the obvious "abscesses", though I'm not sure that's the right word for them, I would suspect impaction but this is my first time with a leopard gecko. Any tips or hints on helping recovery? He's been force fed canned dog food with meds mixed in but has been regurgitating.

Thanks.

force fed DOG food? Seriously?

These guys are strict insectivores with an occasional eating of baby mice... unlness someone specifically told you to fed them dog food (which, frankly, i'm amazed. I've got two of these, and i've NEVER heard anything about dogfood...)

i'd try to get the meds in via waxworm/mealworm/cricket/pinkymouse if you can....

Veterinarians often recommend force feeding these types of geckos formulated cat or dog food when they're not eating. I had to do it with an African Fat-Tailed. It worked really well in getting him back to normal after he was all bony looking.

If there were chickens the size of crickets, geckos would eat them. Most geckos are carnivores. Insectivore is just more applicable since there aren't a lot of tiny mammals they can eat frequently in the wild.

Good information to know if my geckos stop eating.
Thanks for being kind in your reply, Anon :D

Dog food?! Oh god. It's cereal based, for fucks sake...
Smash him insects. Can't be that difficult. Wouldn't upset his stomach so much, either.

I've had to force feed my leopard geckos few times, so I just put him/her on the table, put my hand on him/her as a cut so he can't escape and then rubbed a larva against his mouth a bit. He/she got pissed off as planned and bit the larva, and then ate it as if by reflex.
