Relate to me, /an/. I have mice to deal with.

I've never set a mouse trap before and picked some up today. Currently I've been cleaning out the area underneath and adjacent to the sink where the fuckers have been running wild the last little while.

It's the end of summer and our city is in the midst of a garbage strike, so it's only going to get worse.

Agreed, actually. We were talking about getting one regardless of mice.

me or my dad just pick up the trap/mouse, and crush its neck quick and clean then throw it out.

glue traps are made of win and lulz.

also if you get a cat you don't want it finding some bit of leftover poison.

Two things to keep in mind when using snap traps:

1) Make sure you place the trap against a wall. Mice rarely travel into the center of a room. They travel along the "corner" between the wall and the floor. They stick close to the wall as much as possible. After you set the trap push it up agains the wall so that the "trigger" end of the trap is touching the wall.

2) Don't use very much bait, and make sure that you work it into the trigger. If you just put a lump of bait on there, the mice can often get it without activating the trap. They can also get it by just reaching and grabbing it, which means that even if they do set the trap off, there's a good chance the trap will miss or will get a limb instead. If you work the bait inside the little holder, then the mice will really have to work at it to get the food. That means that their body is in the path of the trap. They are much more likely to trip the trap, and when they do, it it will be more likely to be lethal.

Though, in my experience the glue traps are more effective than the snap traps. If you are worried about them being cruel, just check them often. If you find a rodent just dump the whole shebang (mouse and all) into an old grocery sack, wrap it up, and simply step on it. Presto: quick death for the mouse, the mess is contained, and you don't have to see it.

Mouse stomp = quick death, unlike dying from starvation or stress in a glue trap.

Sounds exactly the same as a snap-trap.
Of course, only with blood, guts, etc. splattered all over a plastic bag instead of a clean/fast brake of its neck.

or there's the ones where they crawl in and can't crawl out. they used to be called mice cubes, but last visit to a wal-mart they didn't have them, and instead had the same thing that's open on both ends.

It is no better than a snap trap. That's not the point. It was a superior option to the glue trap.

mice.

man, i remember back in some farm in Mexico. Our dog was trained to hunt rats. Huge fucking rats the size of a shoe. After a while we had to put him down because he caught rabies.
All the rats put up a fight when you tried to catch them. If you used glue traps they would rip the plastic tray apart with their teeth and try to walk around. If you used snap traps the snap would be too weak to do shit.

we used Mole traps. Mole traps have two scissoring spikes that snap from under the bait to disembowel the animal. It'll still be alive for a bit, running around tossing its guts everywhere, but that was the only sure-fire way of killing a rat.

fuckers were smart too, you couldnt kill a rat in the same room twice.

The only advice I have, is if you get a cat, make sure you don't use any type of mouse or rat poison, because cats often like to get into that stuff. You can also buy humane traps that just catch them in a box and you can release them outside in the woods or something. You may also look at pest control companies and see if they have anything that you can put around the outside of your home to keep mice from coming in from outdoors.

Cat's don't always work. My cat never did anything to try and catch one when I got him for my mouse problem at my old house. Either he was too stupid or he was just being a bitch.

Or you took a cat from a family where the mommy cat doesn't hunt. Kittens need to associate mice with food.
