My year old lab/husky (or whatever) cross who is chained at night spends all night barking at ... a maple tree. There's nothing in the tree, no racoons in the area and squirrels aren't nocturnal as far as I know, the tree just really pisses him off. I let him off the chain to vent steam, he charges at the tree, runs all around it for a few minutes, then I put him back on the chain and the barking starts again.

I should just move his fucking chain to the fucking tree, eh? Problem is the tree is on the top of a hill with a steep section he would choke himself on should he fall off while chained to the tree. Can't let him run around at night because that's how most of our animals have ended up dead - we live close to the trans-canada highway.

Trans-Canada Highway is such a depressing album.

Disregard that, racoon, first one I've seen in twenty five years around here. Gave it a whack with my old indian saber (read: used by the brits to crack east Indian skulls and is quite blunt), when I wrestled it from it's shunken leather scabbard.

Pity I didn't have a masterwork bastard sword or there's be a racoon tail (or leg, I'm not sure what I hit) on the ground.

What, you think I should have left it alone so it could find it's way into the chicken coop? I'm in Canada, we don't have guns here, it was the best I could do.

You could make a runner down the hill so he wont choke.

A length of cable from the tree to another anchor point, then chain him to the cable, gives him a lot more space to run around on.
