We don't let our cat outside because he's albino and extremely susceptible to skin conditions.

Your cat kind of has to be smart enough in the first place.

Much like dogs, a lot of cats, especially the pedigrees, are so inbred that they've lost a lot of their streetsmarts, and are more accessories and companions than independant creatures that just happen to own you. Like cats ought to.

Anyway, my cat's a smart cookie, so I can verify that a cat need not be A Dog, he just has to be SMRT in order to know his name and when to come in. I let my cat out during the day, and I call him in at night. I sometimes have to go out down the street to find him, and he may grumble when I carry him back inside, but he always comes when he's called.

You can't really train it into a cat; it's all about how intelligent he is in the first place and how strong is the bond between you two.

If the cat is allowed to come and go as he pleases, I seriously doubt he will care enough about you to come when called.

Cats must be pretty fucking stupid then.
Even my rabbit knows her own name and comes when I call her over.

My cat's an outdoor cat, and she comes when called. She responds to "Kitty, kitty, kitty, kitty, kiiiiiiiiiiiittttyyyyy!"

I forgot how we trained her to come, but she's been coming when called for 18 years now.

It's not that your cat is dumb like the dickbag in>>221294said, its that the world is far more interesting than you. If your cat finds that coming to you when you call it is a pleasurable and rewarding experience, he will always come.
If your cat loves respects you, he will always come.

Cats aren't dumb enough to be won over with treats, either, so please don't assume I'm suggesting that. It won't make them have any more respect for you if you feed it junk food just to try to get it to do what you want it to.
