Goldfish, wtf That Gomez
So. last night at work (I work at wal-mart, btw) I passed by the fish tank on my break to sneak a peek at the wee little fishies. That was when I noticed all the little goldfish pictured... crowded in the corners and sides of the tank. So I snapped a quick (shitty) picture with my phone and decided to ask the experts at /an/ about this behavior. Is this common? Are they just all eating their dead kin? Are they plotting escape? What's going on?

wow that tank is severely overstocked

those are just feeder fish. youre not supposed to keep them as pets, so stores dont really care about conditions

I think one of the goldfish farted in the middle.

I worked at a pet store and a lot of times the goldfish would group up under the filters in the corners of the tank and ride the currents.

Yeah I went to walmart once and saw several fish skeletons and half eaten fish floating around inside the tank. I went and told one of the employee's and he says to his manager, "Hey, the fish is eatin each other again." ...

Never buy Wal-Mart feeders.

My Oscar got sick as hell from them.

Wow, are they really charging $4 for feeders? Am I reading that wrong?

If they're charging $4, then they aren't feeders. =S

What Darwin was too polite to say, my friends, is that we came to rule the earth not because we were the smartest, or even the meanest, but because we have always been the craziest, most murderous motherfuckers in the jungle.

I always feel so horrible for WalMart fish..they never have any gravel or decorations in those tanks. No wonder they're always stressed and diseased. Not to mention they never hire anyone who gives a shit enough to try and take care of them properly.
Poor fishies. ;_;

i feel bad for the bettas though. no matter where i got they are always in those little containers, usually half dead.

Wow..your WalMart is a far cry above mine then! I feel bad for their betta's too. Oddly I usually get mine from there and they always end up living at least a year before passing away.
My oldest one I purchased at a WM lived for three years.

What you are witnessing is the beginning of a goldfish civil war. At present the casualties are only due to minor skirmishes but soon things will escalate to be much much worse.

Agitating water creates oxigen for the fish, thats why they group around the filter/pump

More than likely they were following people around, or just congregating in one area in hopes of being fed.

I lol'd.

On a side note, when I used to keep mixed aquariums, the dead fish would be eaten by others, but I've never noticed the same species ever joining in the feeding frenzy. Considering fish are known to eat young of their own species in the wild, I guess it was an unusual trait our fish had, or they already had first dibs at the best parts before the others swarmed >.>
