hey /an/ heroes.

I'm going to get a 20 gallon freshwater tank up and running soon, and I need suggestions on what to put in. Basically I want something that will be interesting to look at once in a while. So far I'm thinking about one male betta, an algae eater, and some kind of schooling fish like swordtails or loaches.

any suggestions?

I'm pretty sure it is a bad idea to put schooling darters in with a beta, as they will shred its fins.

Beta+Good planting = Win

well wouldnt the betta be bigger and more agressive than the swordtails anyways?

Maybe against a single fish or a pair. He could pick off the school one at a time. But a single beta against 10 darters? Goodbye pretty fins

Well I was only going to start the tank with 5 fish and see how its goes. I was also considering red tail sharks and neon tetras.

Beasically I was hoping for the betta, algae eater, and 3 of some other kind of fish.

Get a small catfish or snails rather than an "algae eater". Plecos can grow insanely huge in a relatively short amount of time.

You might try getting some non-beta gourami or cichlids (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cichlid ) but I believe the latter can be agressive.

Go to a good fish store (not a general pet store!) and ask them for advice. To gauge salesperson knowledge: Ask if it is okay to keep a goldfish in a 5gallon bowl. If the answer is yes, then leave.

Actually, what might make a pretty tank (and cheap!) would be some male guppies. I don't think you could keep them with a beta too, but that might be too fabulous of a tank anyway.

Yeah there's a Big Als near me that has been open my whole life.

What would be a good predatory fish to keep alone in a 20 gallon?

Feeder fish. No, really. Have you seen the fuckers nip at stuff?

Julli corydoras, or "cory catfish" are fucking cute. Social little buggers, also a schooling fish I believe.. I've had mine for almost four years now. Pic related. They don't have names.

Buy a bunch of betas and put them in there two at a time and have them fight to the death. get a friend to do the same. once each of you are down to one wish, have a fight for the championship.

I've always kept swordtails with bettas with no problems, and bitter is correct about the lack of compatibility between bettas and guppies. I, personally, would chose something smaller, like phantom or silvertip tetras. both look great and I can promise you that they will leave his fins the hell alone. Also, in a well planted tank, a well fed betta will have very little interest in a quick moving fish like a tetra.

How dare you insinuate such a thing. I would neverrrr

So you want a beta with some schoolers? You might try to research small teras, rasboras, small rainbowfish (dwarf, threadfin), cory, or small barbs (gold, cherry, gelius)

btw, regarding algae eater. Do not get plecos. Even the smallest pleco shit a lot. Get otos and shrimps. Dont forget to plant plenty and put some driftwood.

Cherry barbs should be compatible with bettas. They both share the same living conditions as well which makes it even easier.

bettas are shit, go for a big fuck off clarias, they are awesome. youl need a tank the size of your car mind.
on a more serious note, the siamese fighter might pick on the swordtails, go for a bristlenose, a golden nugget or a clown plec as algae eaters, none of them grow over 6 inches which will be fine for a tank that size. i you are getting a Siamese fighter don't put any long finned fish in with it, it will attack and harass them until they die. go for dannios as the schooling fish, they are really entertaining, bloody fast and look pretty cool too!
hope i helped
