It probably got bent, broken, or damaged somehow and being so little the damage was severe enough to warrant its dessication. But definately take it to the vet to check it out, get medicine for the wound, and of course for its age.
Honestly, you should take any cat to the vet when you get it so you know what you're dealing with...especially if you have other cats (so they don't pass around lethal diseases like FIP and such).
