That Gomez
Sup, /an/?

I've been looking at getting a puffer fish for some time. Tetraodon nigroviridis, actually. They sell them at the place I work and are incredibly charming and cute.

The problem is that I'm on a low budget and don't have a whole lot of room, so I was thinking maybe a small glass fishbowl with some rocks and a little plastic plant or something. I've read that these little guys require some salt to live. Or at least to grow. My questions are these:

Am I an idiot for wanting to keep one in a fishbowl?

What kind of salt would I need and how much?

Are there problems with them jumping out?

What kind of things could fit in a small bowl that will help with keeping its beak down?

No. Just... No.

I think you would need more than just a fish bowl. Just to keep things clean and keep it happy.

Forget pufferfish.
They are not a beginners fish.
Get something easy and try it for some years.
After that, you can try harder fish.

LOL you must be a troll. I doubt anyone is dumb enough to work in a pet/fish store and at the same time think a puffer can live in a bowl. GTFO.

I don't get it why people here always want to stick fish into a bowl.
A BOWL IS NOT SUFFICIENT!
A fishtank with a good filter is a MUST.

If you want even a prayer of keeping it alive you're best bet is to set up a cycled (google it) 20+ gallon tank with the appropriate water conditions. If you were less of a no0b you could possibly start him in a 10g for a few months, but I doubt that with you're current level of knowledge, you'd stand any chance of raising it.

The image you showed, OP (or so I believe) and my own are small spotted pufferfish.
I purchased a spotted puffer from a Petco about 8 years ago for 7.99 because "I thought it was cute".
I learned a lot, and I still have Puffinstuff today. These brackish fish are remarkably hardy, although they do need salt, a heater, and at least 7 gallons to their own.

A fish bowl is not suitable for any fish other than those with labrynth organs (that allow them to breathe air from the surface). Fish bowls suffocate most fish (yes, fish need to breathe air through their gills, and need bubblers to do so).
Any fish enthusiast such as myself (and by the sound of it, 162306) knows that there are MANY kinds of chemical balances that need to be observed within an animal-bearing aquarium, not just levels of oxygen in the water.

Puffer fish have many interesting traits. Mine enjoys fried chicken.
Puffers have beaks that constantly grow, and necessitate hard shells and other foods to keep their beaks from overgrowing - which can cause serious health issues, including death. A puffers beak can overgrow and puncture its' own flesh, even its brain.

If you are willing to maintain delicate chemical and filtration balances and also maintain the physical health of your fish in a very hands-on manner, the puffer is the fish for you.
Posted is a chunky spotted puffer.

also, puffers are mean and don't get along well with too many other fish.

yes, they jump. you need tank salt. about a teaspoon per 5 gal. get one of the little goldfish tanks from somewhere like wal-mart or pet smart. like $15.

Make sure it's enclosed, these nigs like to jump.

You could probably set up a five or ten gallon aquarium with a small power filter, gravel, and some plants for less then 30 bucks.
Get a Tetraodon Travancorius instead. They are full on fresh water, and are smaller. Plus they eat those tiny snails.
