So I bought this heater for my hermit crabs (10gal tank) to heat them this winter because my old heater, from Zoo Med, broke in transit once.

BUT IT DOESN'T HEAT. Or at least not much. It's the rainforest one and the box and manual say it's meant for moist soils and creating humidity and crap, but the problem is it only does minimal heating. The air is still frigid and the soil (mix of FB and sand) barely maybe warm and if I put my hand under the tank (lifting it up) and touch the heater, it's every so barely warmer than the air, which is quite chilly (haven't turned the heat on yet). Now with the Zoo Med one, of the same size, just by putting your hand under you could feel the heat radiating off.

Does anyone have experience with these exo-terra heaters? Pic very much related. Are they always like this and a brand to be avoided?

I'm returning it tomorrow because my pet store is awesome and gives either full store credit for a dysfunctional product with no receipt or full refund for one with receipt, but I'd like to know what you guys think about the brand.

Exo-Terra is a sub-brand of Hagen and their eptile heaters are about as respected as their aquarium heaters. Which is to say, they aren't. Just buy a Cobra mat. All mine have lasted for over 10 years now, but I don't know if they're still the same.

I've had great success with Zoo Med so I just ordered one of those off the internet for cheap. A small one of those is sufficient to fully heat my 10gal with no need to mount a second one on the side to heat the air.

Do you actually adhere them to the bottom of the tank? I've cracked the bottom of a couple tanks by spilling cold water into them with one of those attached.

Yes.
