Hey, /an/. I need some help, and time is a bit of a factor.

A lady-friend of mine got her first cat, but is in need for suggestions for an impromptu litter box. All of the gas stations and convenience stores in the area are closed and she lives in a sandless urban area. She had the idea of maybe using rice, but I didn't want to tell her, "Go for it!" without some idea of alternatives.

Any help would be much appreciated.

shred some newspaper and use that.
rice doesn't seem like a good idea.

use dirt

Shredded, balled up newspaper, sand, dirt, these are all alternatives :) I doubt rice would work. Even something like tanbark.

how about a layer of dirt at the bottom with shredded paper on top

You can get a product that is the same exact thing as "kitty litter" though it is un-scented from auto parts stores and from industrial supply stores. It is used for soaking up spilled oil when working on cars or machinery. If your lady friend has access to an auto parts store or an industrial supplier, ask for "oil sorb".

Shredded paper is not effective unles you shred it up very fine. Chances are it will just make a huge mess. Dirt works fine though, and so does finely shredded bark mulch.
