My girl rat is pregnant and due anytime soon. I will keep one of her babies but I will need to get rid of the others after their many weeks with the mother. I've called the two closest rat rescues, both hours away, and neither called back. What is the best way to get rid of them?

I was thinking to put a small ad in the paper and sell them for maybe like 15 bucks since rat rescues give them away at $25. I will also require the new owners to bring a cage, food, wheel, water bottle, and bedding. Is this enough to hopefully secure the babies well being in a new home?

Pic somewhat related.

Protip: dont keep any of the babies, if you keep one, get rid of the momma cus they WILL kill and eat each other if kept together.

No, they won't. Perhaps you are thinking of hamsters? I have kept rats for over a decade and have very rarely ever ran into problems with them getting along, and it was always with new arrivals, never with family.

christ you are in idiot.
if the mother eats the babies, then there is something wrong with the baby and even if there was the mother would most likely just leave it to die.
hamsters and rats are extremely different.

15 bucks OP?
depending on the colors, i sure as hell wouldn't pay 15 bucks for a black hooded, albino or some brown rat. people can get them at the petstore for 5 bucks(and most people don't really give two shits if they are inbred or something) 5 bucks sure, or if free you can probably get rid of them faster. watch out for people with snakes .

The fuck are you talking about. My rat stayed with her babies for a good long time. Protip: You STFU because you have no damn clue. Don't give out any more tips.

Sell them for snake food. Rat pups are hard to come by, in my neck of the woods, I've gotta deal with full-grown mice, which I'd much rather not, seeing as my python will only eat live, and I'd much rather not introduce her to the risk of having her eyes chewed out.

GTFO. What part of "secure the babies well being in a new home" did you not get?

A number of folks who actually care about rats and don't necessarily want to support stores who only sell them as feeders would be more than willing to pay 15 bucks for a well-socialized rat from a private breeder. I paid twenty to adopt a rat from a local shelter. It was for a good cause, and she was by far the sweetest pet rat I have ever owned.

Op here. She had babies! I've read up a lot of them so I think I'm decently prepared but if you've had rat babies before what are some experiences you've had? I know books can only tell so much some times.

I'll take a head count and pictures later when she's not laying on them to feed 'em.

That's like breeding cats, then calling the local shelter informing them about the kittens you don't want. No wonder they didn't return your calls.

I called them long before she got pregnant.

throw them down a garbage disposal

wait so you purposely got your rat pregnant, not yet knowing where to find homes for them?
why the fuck did you get her pregnant in the first place, just because you could?

you probably just have some inbred rat you picked up at the store and you expect to sell the babies as if they are pedigree?
rat rescues are for rats in desperate need of a home and you will only be making it harder for the owner of that rescue by dumping rats on him/her.

good job OP, you're a irresponsible breeder.

I have the room to breed them. I was just trying to find a home for her before she did. I'm going to take very good care of them no matter what happens. But if I can find them homes then that will only make me happier.

Anyways I do have a picture of them but they look like any other 1 day old babies.

For gods sake separate the males and females at 5 weeks of age and stop breeding. Ads in the paper for anything under $10 a rat will usually only get attention from people looking to feed a snake. Keep calling the rescues until you get an answer and try every available local shelter. If no luck there try a pet store like Petsmart that does not sell animals as feeders. I know my local Petsmart will hold animals like that for adoption and I've gotten a few of my own rats that way when people have brought in babies they didn't want.

Yea I know about the 5 week thing. And thanks for the ideas.

I do plan on keeping atleast one baby. But I wonder. Would the dad hurt the baby boy if I put them in together? I know to join them in netrual territory but still. Or would that be fine? Then I might just keep one boy to stay with the father and one girl to stay with the mother.

Agree with whoever said $15 is steep if you're going to attempt to get rid of them by placing an ad in the paper.

I had luck getting rid of my rat's litter after calling quite a few pet stores; finally found one that agreed to sell the babies as pets, not feeders. Elementary school teachers, too, were interested in taking a pup as a class pet.

Just some ideas.

Also, I've never experienced the mother or father turning hostile towards the offspring. As long as your parent specimens were sociable to begin with, then I don't think you'll have a problem keeping them in common living areas.

Why can't you keep the babies? Just too many?

OP is a fucking moron that thought it'd be cool to let them mate and give birth to babies, now they will probably die because of OPs carelessness

A shelter won't want fucking rats. You're an idiot, you shouldn't be allowed to have pets. Stupid bitch. :|

Feed them to your pet snake
>> Anonymous
flush them all down the toilet

that cant be any more irresponsible as letting them be born in the first place

Taking care of baby rats weather she called a place before hand or not is irresponsible? If she takes cares of them an finds good homes how is that bad?

He claimed that he intentionally bred them and didn't think it through. Now he has a bunch of baby rats that he's trying to get rid of, didn't try to find out if people would actually want to take one of them before breeding them.

You can't even argue "well, it could've been an accident" because he said earlier that he planned this all along.

Protip: this is NOT how it works
1. Breed male and female pet rats
2. ??????
3. Profit!

If you're going to intentionally breed any pet, you have to think things through and have homes lined up way in advance or you are doing nothing but contributing to the pet overpopulation problem and probably dooming those rats to be homeless, or snake food. I honestly vote for the latter, early death that benefits another creature > being homeless.

How would the become homeless? If he doesn't find homes and he just takes care of them how is that bad? Maybe it wasn't the best idea in the world but at least he's taking care of them. Thats better then what half the world does to their poor animals.

Nobody is going to spend $15 on a rat. You can go to pet stores and get them for $5
