Hi there, /an/.

I'm going to the local petsmart today where they run a cat adoption center on the weekends. My cat, Bart, passed away just yesterday. (He was over twenty years old; he was lucky to live that long anyway.) I'm looking for a large, playful cat. Does anyone have suggestions for breeds? If it's not trouble, please post pics.

Pic possibly related.

OP here. Pic not related. Sorry.

Maine Coons are VERY good pets if you're looking for large cats. They're extremely lovable lapcats, only big. Males tend to get huge, and I'm not too sure on their temperments, but females are playful and not-so-big.
I have a 12 year old main coon. She's a little socially retarded due to the people who owned her before, but she's the sweetest cat ever. She sleeps with us and paws our legs and faces for attention. And she looooooves to be brushed.
I'd highly recommend them.

Thanks! I'll definitely consider one.

Yeah OP you basically just asked for a Maine Coon.

Bombays are the same way... huge, muscular cats that are talkative and playful. Very expensive as purebreds, though.

I dunno. I haven't had great experiances with Bombays. They tend to be overly friendly and extremely territorial. I think they'd be okay if it was just one cat, or another they were raised with.
But yeah, Bombays get big, too. They're shorthair and super muscular.
Soo.. you pretty much have the option of Maine Coon and Bombay, both of which are easy to find in adoption agencies.
I've seen at least 3 Bombays in petsmart at one time, and I see a Main Coon every now and then.

good luck getting your choice of breed from an adoption center, though adoption is the way to go. I think the standard advice is to just mess around with all of em and see who you like.
