Sup /an/, I just got a new dog, pic related. I adopted him from a shelter. It's my first dog and I have a couple questions.

He hates being even 3 feet from me. If I get up off the couch and go to the computer, he'll follow and lay back down next to my chair. Is this common for dogs or is it because he's new and was apparently neglected by his previous owners.

Also, is there a shampoo or something like that that will reduce how people with allergies are affected by him?

you rescued him. 'nuff said.

thank you, btw.

Don't over-wash your dog in an effort to get him to stop shedding as that will just cause his skin to get very dry and flake even more. You shouldn't be washing more than once a week, once every two weeks is ideal. The best thing that you can do is get him on a premium/super-premium dog food (Nutro Natural Choice, Blue Buffalo, Avoderm, etc.) because better nutrition adds to a healthy coat. You can add a teaspoon of olive oil to his food every other day or so if he is still flaky. Get a rubber curry or rubber brush (similar to http://www.arcatapet.com/item.cfm?cat=3646) and brush him with circular motions outside to get rid of extra hair and promote oil production in the skin.

Good luck with the allergies!

Oh he's so cute! Congrats on adopting. Consider crate training, it should help with the clingy-ness by providing the dog with a comfortable "den" of his own.

I even googled it for you : http://www.cuhumane.org/topics/crate.html

he's probably scared you'll disappear if he loses sight of you.
he just has to learn that you're always gonna be there for him, and that you'll always come back.

One day I'll add a dog to the pet situation; thanks for adopting! Anyways, as opposed to the BS you hear on TV, you can aclitimize to most allergens (well... non-anaphylactic ones). Basically, just live with the dog for a few months and your allergen worries will go away. Ideally you should let your dog play outside---and you should play with him. This will help speed the process: and it's fun!

Dogs get abandonment issues just like people do.

He doesn't want you to be out of his sight because he thinks you're going to leave. He'll eventually be alright. The dog I adopted was the exact same way for about a month.

You can wash a dog as much as once a week. That allows their skin plenty of time to re-oil itself.

You don't know shit about allergies.

Pet dander is what causes most pet-related allergies. Wash your pet once a week at the very most. You can buy a $50 HEPA filter air exchanger. Those help a great deal, especially for your bedroom. That is all you can really do unless you put it in a giant, plastic, hamster ball with HEPA filters over the air holes.
