Pol Pot killed a lot of people. As a Buddhist monk, he was vegetarian too.

India by far lives in a fucked up caste system that involves unequal rights distribution and pretty much makes sure everyone is dirt poor, with all sorts of minor factions having civil war at any point in the continent.

Guess what all those high-caste fuckers starting all those civil wars are: VEGETARIAN.

I did vegan diet in college for four years. Then one day at a bbq I drank some beers and rode around the empty campus on a bike we found in the woods and said "fuck it, gimme a burger. no, two burgers." I never looked back. I do eat a mostly raw diet, sprouts, whey protein, flax seeds other super-healthy and hippie foods, etc, and definitely plenty of beef jerky, fish and eggs. I am aware of the many downsides of factory farming, but I get most of my beef from a local grass-fed farm, my eggs come from some kind organic and cage-free place (which, honest to god, taste a lot better than the cheapo supermarket eggs) and the fish comes from chile or something idk what's up with the eco-friendliness of the fish I eat.

I'm a vegetarian, and I'm quite pleased with it. I think it's the moral thing to do, and I also think morality is subjective.

Despite the urban legend, so to speak, you wouldn't realize most vegetarians are vegetarian unless you asked them.
>> Anonymous
>>311636

Morality is indeed subjective. I come from a farming family and I've spent seven years of my life studying ecology and environmental science. As a result of all this I do eat meat, because of the comparative ecosystems impact of running limited levels of stock on a natural pasturage, and the environmental disaster that is (for example) a rice paddy in an arid area, irrigated by saline water and drenched in so many chemicals that there's only one species left alive and that's the rice.
>> Anonymous
>>311607

corn IS grass - it is simply a different part of the plant
check the info on those eggs just about all the "natural, etc." labeling on foods is unregulated. Even then "cage-free" simply means that the chickens are not stuck in cages - they may be given only enough space to sit and may not even be allowed outside, and even if they are allowed outside, they will probably only be allowed on concrete, not on dirt or grass.
importing fish is... pretty stupid. consumes lots of fuel.

i am what I would call a "reverse vegetarian". I "adopted" a vegetarian and now for every animal that they don't eat, I eat THREE. That way, I'm not just making up for them, I'm making it worse.
but seriously I have never noticed a taste difference between any different kinds of meat or eggs based on how they were raised.

Man cannot survive as either only a carnivore or only a herbivore. Man is an omnivore. You may eat meat, but you must also eat plenty vegetables. And you may be vegetarian, but you cannot survive without the nurtients obtained from meat. Sure you may find substitutes, but mankind has always survived on the much easier to obtain meat. Vegetarianism is unnatural. It is a modern creation, a luxury that only the priviledged can afford. And by priviledged, I don't mean you rich, I just mean you're priviledge to live in a society and modern times where it has become possible.

Not really, Meat has historically been a luxury for the higher classes, with the peasantry forced to subsist on gardens. >> Anonymous
>>311944
Why the fuck do you like a table made out of vegeta?
>> Anonymous
>>311942
No, the meat *we* eat is a luxury. Gardens require huge tracts of land, which the peasantry didn't own, and they couldn't eat the food grown on it either (it all belonged to the landlord/master), so that farming stuff is nonsense. People would eat any sort of animal product they could get their hands on. The intestines, poop and all. Hooves, tails, kidneys, stomachs, eyeballs, everything. Birds nests made with bird saliva are still eaten in Japan. Fermented eggs and fetuses, since that stuff doesn't keep forever. Just watch Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmerman for an idea.
>> Anonymous
>>311954
...You've never seen a subsistance garden have you? Also, the aristocracy almost ALWAYS forbid the peasantry from hunting, they had to give some of there vegetables to the lords, not all of it. Do you think kings went around "Sorry mate these cabbages are for us high folk, you just get to eat Meat" (albiet by products, but even those where historically eaten by the aristocracy)

you're confused - when Anon said "the privileged" he meant us, the people of today who live in an environment where we can get whatever food we want in massive quantities quite easily. In the past humans survived on whatever food they could produce effectively and maintain a healthy diet, and to them getting the protein you needed basically meant eating an animal, which probably entailed getting some eggs or milking the cow and occasionally eating a chicken or a hog.
today we can eat supplements to our diet that provide the specific kinds of protein that we need. However, these supplements have been virtually unavailable to people for centuries. Thus, we are the privileged that are able to eat a somewhat healthy vegetarian diet.
even then, the majority of our produce today is shipped in from various places - if you live the in US you get everything but grains from outside, and if you live elsewhere all your grain comes from the US. This produces pollution on a massive scale and drives up the price of energy, so it isn't as simple as animal foods consuming massive quantities of fossil fuels while plants are like little solar powered food machines.
I'm a omnivore primarily because I know enough about nutrition to understand that eating a fair amount of meat is good for me. I love animals. I also love the way they taste.

Erh I'm having trouble understanding your argument because of how poorly worded it is, are you honestly trying to tell me meat is more effecient than plant matter? I'm not saying nobody should eat meat, but Those that can't live on a vegetarian diet should eat meat, but not only is it unethical, it is fundementally doomed in my opinion, there is no way we can keep up producing highly ineffecient meat to feed the massive population boom we are having, so pretty soon we will all be vegetarian as a matter of survival.

>>311967

That would be a seal ripping off a penguin's head and spinal cord.

Nature ain't pretty, vegans. The only reason we have big brains is that our ancestors, after discovering how to use fire, used it to cook meat. Cooked meat has more brain-goodness than vegetables.
>> Anonymous
>>311993
Sorry bro, you can't try to force this "unethical" bullshit on us because eating meat is a fact of life for some animals like us humans. You can't tell me a snake is unethical for eating rodents. It is a fact of life, you can paint your own delusional lenses whatever color you want, but you can't deny the truth.

>Erh I'm having trouble understanding your argument because of how poorly worded it is
Sure is dodging around here.
>> Anonymous
Vegetarians don't exist because it is their natural dietary preference, they exist because they forcefully changed their diet to conform to an ideal, rather than because human are hervibores.

Some animals only eat plants because that's just the way they are, not because they think MEAT IS MURDER.
>> Poorly worded was it? Anonymous
>>311993
If my argument is poorly worded you need to go back to elementary school...
I made no attempt to say that producing meat is more efficient than producing plant matter. That would be an obvious fallacy; humans have chosen to farm grains rather than convert as much land as possible into pasture for a good reason, (see Genghis Khan, etc.) I am simply arguing that supporters of vegetarianism overemphasize the admittedly numerous advantages of a highly plant-based diet to the point of omitting the disadvantages.
If you are attempting to argue that eating a meat heavy diet is unethical because it reduces the food supply that could be used to feed hungry people around the world I would have to say that you lack an adequate understanding of global food markets. Realistically, the primary barriers to food being provided to people are transportation costs and the actions of governments to shore up food prices in developed countries such as the Untied States and Europe. Even if more food was being produced it would not necessarily have a significant effect on the food supply in countries that are net importers of food because the increase in the supply of food in food exporting countries would drive down the price and farmers would be inclined to reduce their production, while the government would artificially inflate prices by paying farmers not to farm. I would be somewhat like the reverse of what is happening now where government subsidies of ethanol in the United States are driving up the cost of corn, which is in turn increasing the price of wheat and rice and driving up world food prices, leading more people to starve. So yes, filling your tank with corn juice is starving people.
>> Poorly worded was it? Anonymous
>>311993
Despite your mention of a "world population doom" the rate at which the Earth's population is increasing has actually declined. Today India is well on its way to becoming the most populous country in the world because China has dramatically slowed its population growth, and Japan is seeing a dramatic labor shortage due to a lack of younger workers. The only reason that the United States has positive population growth is because of immigration. As the world industrializes we see that people have fewer children per capita and the population begins to shrink.
So no, eating meat does not steal food from the mouths of the poor any more than a politically correct attempt at supposedly clean energy, and the world population will slow its growth and begin to decline within the foreseeable future.

tl;dr Don't be a butthurt faggot just because you are wrong. It jeopardizes the ability of people more intelligent than you to get their point across because you have given people a bad impression of people like you.
Was that worded well enough for you to understand?
>> Anonymous
I'm a vegetarian.

Before you go "OMG FAG", allow me to explain myself.

I ate meat for fourteen years, then stopped five years ago. It wasn't hard for me, and the reasons I stopped in the first place are because it personally isn't something that I'd like to contribute to, but I NEVER push my views on anyone else. I don't look at someone eating a hamburger and think "WHAT A CRUEL BASTARD", I think "That hamburger looks damn delicious." I eat fish because there's no way you can live a healthy life as a vegan or vegetarian despite vitamins (and vegans are batshit insane, let me say), and sometimes I miss eating chicken and beef.

I don't buy PETA's argument. "LOL WITH ALL THE GRAIN WE USE TO FEED FARM ANIMALS WE COULD FEED EVERY HUMAN IN THE WORLD"

...Yeah, that may be true, but nobody would grow the grain without the cows to eat them, so then we'd have no meat AND no grain.

As long as you don't overeat, you can live a healthy life without heart disease and breast cancer.

Just leave meat-eaters alone, vegetarians. And meat-eaters will leave us alone. The only reason they think we're crazy is because sometimes we act like it when we scream "MEAT IS MURDER!" while dressed up like a pig on the street with picket signs.

The only thing I will never understand is trophy hunting and fur. Normal hunting is fine, however, if you eat the animal.

Most third-world countries are sustained mostly on meat, because it's filling and a large animal will feed several people. For poorer people here in developed countries, meat is far less expensive than soy and vegetables and vitamins.

Rant over. I'm just pissed off at my fellow vegetarians for acting like such opinionated assholes that don't even know their facts, but they're somehow superior to meat-eaters and their shit doesn't stink. The slaughterhouses you see in PETA videos are NOT typical. Usually the animals are killed humanely now via a quick electric shock to their skull. Kills them instantly.

I am a vegetarian (with the exception of eggs). HOWEVER if someone's made me a hamburger and if I don't eat it it'll just go to waste and the cow died in even more vain then I'll go ahead and eat it anyway.

I don't think there's anything wrong with vegetarianism as long as you don't try to push it on other people. I would be a vegetarian myself but I was raised on eating beef, chicken, pork, and turkey and now eating meat is a habit I can't easily get rid of. But I do what I can by not eating meats like lamb, gator, elk, venison, or any other meat that I'm not used to.

Every vegetarian has their own reason for being one. If I were one it would be just to make myself feel better knowing that I'm not eating a slaughtered animal. But I can't even do that.

>> Anonymous
>>312265
...ok, you are obviously too dense to follow. There's that IQ correlation!

You claim that IQ and vegetarianism are related. There are many other factors that might explain this relationship other than that smart people tend to be vegetarians or that vegetarianism makes you smart.
Academics tend to be overrepresented in academic surveys
Many of the people with the highest IQ are foreign students. Some of these students may be vegetarian or vegan for religious reasons.
Activist vegetarians with high IQ would have the tendency to over-report versus omnivores with high IQ that would decline to answer due to lack of interest.
etc.
Wealthy people who are better able to afford vegetarian dietary supplements also tend to be better educated than poorer people who may be stuck buying whatever is available (or may be on welfare and forced to buy whatever is dictated to them.) This would artificially depress the average omnivore IQ.
It tends to be very hard to realistically equate IQ with anything other than education. It's like trying to say that black people tend to have a lower average IQ due to a "racial handicap".
>> Anonymous
>>312277
Oh wow, you're turning into Mr. Conspiracy-Theorist pretty quick here. Virtually every study ever conducted has shown a correlation between high IQ and BECOMING a vegetarian--not being born into it. If you have a legitimate problem with the studies, you're welcome to take it up with the people doing the studies. But just saying, "BLAH BLAH, studies are biased!!" is not a complaint, so don't be surprised if you're laughed at.

I'll just re-state these sour fact for you as many times as it's necessary. Maybe if you hear them enough times they will sink in. Like trying to pound some raw clay into something worthwhile.
>> Anonymous
>>312280
>If you have a legitimate problem with the studies, you're welcome to take it up with the people doing the studies.
If I have a problem with the studies I am going to say that I think that they are biased and unreliable, and that I do not believe them for a second. If more credible information comes out that supports their conclusion, I will resolve my opinion accordingly.
Until that time I will calmly call bullshit no matter how many times you repeat the same flawed studies.
>Mr. Conspiracy-Theorist
If believing that there are people who like to have intellectual circle-jerks with everyone agreeing with everyone else makes me a conspiracy theorist then sure. When there is one credible person who is not interested in forwarding some kind of agenda that actually listens to such drivel for a second, maybe I'll be forced to reconsider
>> Anonymous

But seriously wtf, vegetarianism thread? We increased our brain size and developed our brains by eating meat.

I'm inclined to agree. Animal proteins are very important in rapid brain development

Huh? References?
Most hunter-gatherers ate/eat on average a small amount of meat every few days. Most of their protein is from the grains, pulses and nuts they find in their natural environment.
Most subsistence farmers raise animals as a sort of "protein store". Animals can convert waste food, land that human food can't be grown on, etc., to human food, and keep it there until killed. Subsistence farmers kill one of their animals every few months and get many small meals of meat out of them.
OTOH many farmers (e.g. in India) are vegetarian.

I think all of you are faggots and need to shut the fuck up and eat a good steak.

Seriously, cry about it. MEAT IS GOOD.

I'm glad you're all such professional nutritionists all of the sudden. Too bad Vitamin B12 is easy to come by, or you might have a point. B12 is fortified into grains, granola bars, drinks, and other things. Nice try though. Oh, here, I'll be original:

Vegetarian organizations need to take a more practical approach. If they told people to eat LESS meat, which is unarguably beneficial for health, then meat company profits would suffer, people would be healthier, and less animals would have to die every day to feed people who eat meat just to piss off overzealous vegetarians.

I'm aware that the egg package labeling means basically nothing, but the eggs *are* brown, which I figure counts for something and I am serious that they taste better. Best eggs on earth come from amish farms. The grass fed beef I get from the local is much better than the supermarket meat. I'm suprised you haven't heard about it before, it's quite a thing in the steaks world that g-fed is ten times better, but somewhat rare in this day or soy and corn feed.

Yeah, Vitamin B12 falls out of the sky and drops into sacks of flour to fortify it, doesn't it? Do you think it takes a nutritionist to know what hte fuck belongs in food?

You CAN live as a vegetarian, sure, if you make sure to take all sorts of supplements for iron and calcium (contrary to popular belief, iron and calcium in green vegetables are mostly fixed and cannot be utilised)

What the fuck is your diet? Supplementarianism or vegetarianism?

I love vegetarians. I wish more people would become vegetarians. Because that means there'd be more and more meat left for me! :D

I take zero supplements and my nutrition is great. But that's just according to my doctor. You guys apparently know more than doctors, scientists, and everyone else, so I'm sure that won't impress you.

It must be nice to live with such a small brain. "Oh no, this isn't a supplement, this is just orange juice with enriched iron in it". "Oh no, this isn't a calcium supplement, soy is NATURALLY fortified with calcium".
