>>193910It depends on the species, the individual spider, and your experience at handling tarantulas. Old world tarantulas are often ill-tempered and best left alone, but there are many new world species that can be safely handled if you know what you are doing. Australia does not have any native "true" tarantulas, but they do have a few species of large spiders, such as the funnel-web spider, that are closely related to them. Unfortunately, like most things and Australia, they are EXTREMELY poisonous and worse yet VERY aggressive. I'd personally do everything possible to avoid them and seek medical attention IMMEDIATELY if one bites you.
