The short term answer is: Your mother cat CAN count, and WILL miss the kittens.
Long term answer: After the kittens grow to be a certain age, the mother's maternal instincts die and she no longer considers them her children, and will actively fight and harm them for invading her space.
Like most animals, she may even try to mate with one of her male offspring once her maternal instincts die.
