Any dachshund owners? Mine's three months old and seems quite slow in learning compared to other breeds I've had. Any training tips?

Between my parents and I, I've had a hand in raising three of the buggers.

They've seemed plenty smart to me, but they are very VERY stubborn. Everytime we tried to shape their behavior, we had to constantly give them incentive to do it.

Really, be consistant and be patient. Othwise, s/he'll figure out "If I ignore you long enough, you'll get frustrated and then I can go back to whatever I was doing."

they all turn mean and fat when they get older :( cute puppy though

I have never handled dachsuns, but I have had a lot of dogs and I have two words, "Dog Whisper"!!! Watch it, and maybe even pick up his book and it will help BIG TIME!!! He is SO good! So many think he can't help, but he always does! Though he's not much for "training" as in teaching tricks, but he does correct behavioral problems and make dog well balanced and happy.

A close friend of mine has a dachshund... It was originally his brother's dog as a present and over the years it just became the mom's dog cause she feeds him human food and spoils him.

The little asshole is about 12 years old now and its overweight, smells bad, barks up a shit storm if it hears a knock or noise outside, and blows mucus on the carpet.

I've wanted to kill this little fucker, but now I'm just waiting for him to die of clogged arteries. I never ever want a dachshund, EVER. If you HAVE to get one, just take good care of it and don't let it boss you around. Or watch the Dog Whisperer!

Pic related, not him, but very similar.

Please, Dog Whisperer just pulls dominance shit on dogs by rolling them and being an alpha male. If you can't handle a dog then don't get a dog. Such aggressive tactics are unnecessary.
Also I would be trepidatious in regards to dachshounds because I had a friend back in high school who had a little sausage named Pixie. She had to be put down before she turned a year old because of back troubles. Of course this is typical of any breed which has been selectively bred for decidedly non-canine features.

Not that I actually employ his methods, but Cesar Milan rarely ever alpha rolls a dog. I think he's only done it twice so far.

That said, the dominance theory is very real. However, Cesar does very extreme tatics on a extreme dog. The ONLY thing ANYONE should walk away from this show with is, "exercise, train, love". He has to rehabilate dogs that were NOT given those three. And even then, most dogs, even when not given those three, don't get extreme enough for him to be called in.

So he's working with extremely rare dogs. Nobody, least of all 4channers, should be using his rehab methods - ever. Unless advised by a professional trainer with many referalls.

I hate tiny dogs with a passion too, and my late mother had a whole bunch of them. They were all rotten dogs, but that was easily fixed with the exercise part, and I didn't even bother doing the training or love.

Really. Just feed your dog, and show him love, and he will respect you as alpha. If he doesn't do your command, 9 times out of 10 it's not challenging your position, there's a underlying motivation for not doing it.

If he does undesirable behaviors (barking at strangers or walking ahead on leash, if you find that undesirable) it's not leading, alpha'ing, whatever. He just doesn't know what he's supposed to do, so he's doing what instinct tells him to do.

My huskies will instinctly walk up to a stranger to greet and love them. My GSD's will instinctly bark at them. Both are the same mechanism going on, but people will look at the GSD's behvaior as wrong, even though it's the same thing.

tl:dr if you find a undesirable behavior, talk to a trainer before you make "heirarchy" "alpha" whatever assumptions.

Dachshunds are just like that, everyone of them has their own personality and tehy tend to be a little stubborn, too. Trust me, after you have a raised a dachshund once, you won't ever want another dog breed, because they'll all seem boring to you.

OMG! Your Dachshund is so adorable! It looks just like my first one did when he was that young!! I just adopted one from our humane society, he's pretty much trained but he still has accidents in the house. What kind of problems are you having training him? Potty training?

They can be a little stubborn at times but they are the best breed ever. Rowdy, my last mini dachshund followed me around like my little shadow, he slept in my bed and liked to cuddle and now I have Toby, a standard dachshund who does the same exact things! They are one of the greatest breeds.

I have to concur, they are a great breed...but require a lot a attention and patience.

I got 3 of wiener dogs running around my house. The only problem I have with them is they are super protective of the house. Someone taking to long to walk by our house, a car door shutting, or especially a knock on the door will make them go on a barking spree.

This is my long hair haired dachshund mix.
She barks at everything and does not get along with other animals, chases and tries to kill anything smaller and demands a lot of attention, but she is totally gentle to any human strange little kids can walk up and poke and pull on her and she does nothing. She prefers to stay very close to me and tends to ignore other people completely.

Wiener dogs are hunting dogs.
But they can easy get back problems do to a long spinal column and short rib cage. Don't force them to jump or use stairs.

A fun little story is those dogs was once used for hunting badgers out of holes. And they never gave up in fight.

Dachshund is really an awesome dog when people treat them well.
