kk so i have 2 hermit crabs, i got them last week when i was on vacation. i know the little claw is for eating and the big claw is for pinching stuff. well, one of them has has lost his eating claw, the bottom part of it, along with the tip of several other limbs. he still moves around well but i'm worried he's going to starve to death. is there any way to fix his limbs/make them regnerate faster? can i feed him any other way? is he going to die? why is this happening? the two of them aren't fighting as far sa i know; in fact, the other one [whose limbs are all intact] is incredibly lethargic and won't really do anything [he was really active when i first got him]. help me, /an/ :[

i went to the beach a few weeks ago and one of my friends started collecting these hermit crabs, saying he's going to sell them to idiots at the mall.

Assuming you live in some coastal U.S. state, they were probably all dead or dying by the next morning unless he has a saltwater aquarium with a chiller.

no, he ended up chucking them out to sea.

i just thought it was funny because people will raise anything as a pet.

Maybe it doesn't like paint on its shells? *shrugs*

There's no way to make them regenerate faster, but if he realizes that he's going to starve, he' probably try to use his other claw for feeding. This works for them sometimes, but not always.

As for the lazy one, his inactivity is probably caused by the temperature. Check your thermostat, if it's below something like 70-73, you might want to warm it up a bit. Hermit crabs are tropical animals, remember. Their ideal temperature is somewhere between 75-85. Another thing to remember is the water issue. Make sure that they have a container of water with a small sponge dipped in it, and you should spray them with a spray bottle daily (the crab itself, not just the shell) to keep their gills wet.

Any other questions?

They also have other ways that they eat...they dont necessarily need food but they absolutely have to have water...when they molt they will grow all of their legs back...they molt when they're ready...

this only applies to land hermit crabs...n there is a good chance that they will fight so u would have to watch over them n split em up...
