Is it just my rats, or do male rats smell like sour mcdonalds french fries?

There is something very wrong with either your rats or your local McDonald's.

I like to sniff my rats when I hold them, same with my hamsters. I don't know about the mcdonalds french fries though.

My girls smell like clean bedding. Not unpleasant.

My rat wanted me to eat it, it seemed like. When he was on my shoulder he'd lick at the corner of my mouth and pull at it to make me turn my head, then he'd nip and pull at my lips until I opened my mouth, then he'd practically climb halfway in to lick and preen my teeth and tongue for a minute or so, like one of those little birds that walk around on crocs' mouths and clean their teeth.

Weirdest rat I ever had.

I had read dozens of articles about how clean pet rats were, but when I went to pick up my 4 week old boys, I was nothing less than shocked at how soft and beautiful their coats were. When I held Stanley's tiny velvet coated body in my hands that day and he did not even flinch, I knew I had made the right choice for a pet.

P.S. now that my male ratties are grown their fur is coarser and very slightly oily, but still a little cleaner than that of our cats and still a joy to pet.

When I put my nose directly to their fur I think they smell a little like corn tortillas.

Rats release a pheromone in their saliva that is spread across their fur when they groom, much like how cats have scent glands across their body that rub onto things.

When they're crawling all over your face and giving you kisses, you can't not smell them.
