Day 3
I was staring at my breeding bottle this morning and was kinda disappointed that I didn't see anything move.

Now, just at this moment, I saw something small move it the water. I got closer and tried to focus on this small white thing while suddenly I saw something greyish swim along. So something did hatch! From my estimations I currently have 2 Triops and 2 other small things swimming in my bottle of water :) It's really to small (I guess 1-2mm) to take a good photo from. According the instructions, I should skim the detritus away. I'm doing this really carefully, checking every tiny thing I take for life. I'll dry the detritus and use it later, because it's a great conditioner for the water and it might still contains eggs.

I also added a bit of water of my aquarium to fill it back to normal. I hope this doesn't kill them. Also, now the lamp does a normal day/night cycle.

Pic related, it shows the cleaned bottle

cool story bro

I would invest in a better vessel. Your current one is a bit small and has those hard-to-see-through ridges. I'd probably get a 2-liter with the top little dome thing cut off if you can't find something like a fairground one gallon goldfish tank.
>> Anonymous
Would really suck if someone came into your room thirsty after a long jog and drank that down.
>> Anonymous
The little white things are fairy shrimp, aka sea monkeys. I don't know exactly how they get mixed in but the Triop will more or less eat them.

>>270487
They're intentionally put there for future trip food.

Yeah, but I was too lazy to go to the shop. I will get something more decent for the second batch.

I know, but thanks anyway :D

Day 4
I can now clearly see 2 animals swimming in my bottle (I guess the other ones died). One is a Triops and the other one is a Fairy Shrimp (he will serve as food for the Triops). I estimate the Triops to be 3 to 5 mm in length.
I tried to take a good photo of it, but he's moving really fast, my cellphone (k750i) isn't that good in macro mode and the bottle doesn't allow me to take clear pictures. You can however see the shape (with some imagination) :)
Seriously, I'm amazed how quickly these creatures grow. Just this morning the Triops looked almost invisible, transparent and small. Right now he looks 4-5 mm, brownish, you can clearly see the tail etc.
I bet I'll be able to take a clear picture in 2 days.

Would anyone please explain what is this all about? Breeding bottle? It seems interesting and I'd really like to know more about that.

They're called Triops. They are small freshwater crustaceans that look like horseshoe crabs and like the horseshoe crab are living fossils. Their bodies haven't changed in >70 million years. The eggs, once dried, have a shelf life of 20 years. The eggs are often sold in kits to aquarium enthusiasts. They have a very short lifespan of 20-40 days but can grow to be 5 cm in that short time.

**Update:** The lamp fell down, which threw the bottle outside my closet. I was lucky enough that the Triops was still inside the bottle! Around 80% of all the water was gone and is slowly being replaced by water from my aquarium. I hope he survives this water-change-shock.
     File :-(, x)
It seems the Triops has survived! He even has grown to 1.3 to 1.5 cm! You can now clearly see it eyes and it has developed a full (but still a bit transparent) skeleton. I think that in 3 days I can place him in my main aquarium. I also increased the food I give to him (about one medium sized goldfish flake).

I noticed 2 Triops exoskeletons floating in the tank. Triops 'jump out' their skin to grow, much like how snakes do. I took a picture of the biggest one since it might be interesting.

Just wondering, are you sure it's a male? The chance of a male triop hatching is like very slim if I'm right. The females can asexually reproduce and lay fertile eggs eventually.
>>271824
I'm not sure if it's a he or she. Most Triops are bisexual but female biased and can reproduce parthenogenetically. I just called her a him to make it easier. From now on I'll call the Triops a her.

Thanks for reporting it, I also changed the text on the website!

Day 7

Not much happened today. The lamp died so I've put the bottle next to my aquarium to provide it with some light. I got a chance to measure her up close and she's 1.7cm from head to tail. There also seems to be some wood stuck on her tail and she keeps coming to the top of the bottle. This could indicate that there isn't enough oxygen in the water. Maybe I should transfer her to to aquarium earlier.
     File :-(, x)
I got up really early this morning and I had nothing to do. I watched my Triops a bit and noticed she still was on the top of the bottle all the time, I decided to do something about it.

I've forced myself to use my creative mind and the result is terrific ...
     File :-(, x)
The bottle is now inside the aquarium, connected to the bubbler with a straw, supplying oxygen to both the aquarium and the bottle itself trough a super-high-tech set-up ** cough **

As you can see, there is nothing that can't be fixed with some creativity and ghetto gear!

I had 3 goldfish:
-Black Moor (died, already was weak when I bought him)

-Common Goldfish

Day 9
Again, nothing really exciting happened. She grows pretty quickly. I tried to measure her but she keeps moving and swimming. I estimate her to be 2 cm from head to tail.
If she keeps growing like that she'll be ready in 2 days for the big transfer to the aquarium.

She is really big now, probably enough to let her out in the wild jungle of the aquarium, but I'll let her grow a bit extra just to make sure my fish don't eat her. Bellow are some pictures of her eating her food.

Also, I wish my cellphone had good macro -_-

Did you seriously, honestly think anything else was going to happen? Goldfish (and, really, all fish) will try to eat anything that fits in their mouth.. and sometimes things that don't fit in their mouth. Unless your triop is introduced when it's way too big to eat, you're not going to end up with any other result.

R.I.P. Triops ;_;
>>273823
It was bigger than it's mouth, that's why I risked it. At first the goldfish just 'nipped' the Triops a few times and then leaved it alone, that's why I supposed it was OK
At least it must have been a great snack for the goldfish, because I never really bought other food besides the flakes.
Well, doesn't matter, second batch already set, only need to find a new lamp (old one died) and probably also going to get a bubler.
