hay /an/

I was just away from Thursday-Sunday night. I left my two guinea pigs at home, but had a friend check on them for food and water every day. When I came home last night, I noticed that my one girl has a big bald spot above her nose. It doesn't seem to hurt her and it doesn't look like there's any blood. My mom says it's either stress from being left by themselves (d'aaawww, she missed me) or Vit. C deficiency. I doubt it's the latter, because they had plenty of food, Vit. C drops and oranges, carrots, etc. while I was gone, and also the other pig is fine, she's got no bald spots. Should I be concerned?

the other pig probably pulled the hair out

It might be mites. I have three guinea pigs, one that gets them from time to time (the other two have never been affected), probably from the hay they get. I put lavender essential oil on the spots, and the hair grows back within a couple days. Just a teeny l'il dab will do, and don't put directly on its' nose.

Hmm... I took them both to the vet about 2 months ago and they both got treatment for mites just as a precaution. I would think the medicine lasts longer than that?

What treatment they got? When my rabbits had mites, they took a shot of invermicin (?) flea powder, bath with flea shampoo, and I had to spread the fea power all over the carpet. They never had it again.

I can't remember the exact name. It was in a syringe, but I just squirted it onto parted fur near the nape of their neck once every 2 weeks for a month (3 treatments)

When my animals get mites and I don't have any medicine around and can't get to the vet, I give them a good olive oil bath. Just take a tiny bit of oil and rub it all in their fur. They'll look like pathetic little greasy creatures for a few days but it does suffocate all the bastard bugs on em. Also helps moisturize the skin.

would vegetable oil work? If not I can pick up some olive oil on the way home tomorrow.

I've only heard olive oil recommended.
