WTF is this? Anonymous
Me and my brother just captured this abomination of nature and after a short debate whether this is the only specimen around this area or not we decided to KILL IT WITH FIRE (well, bug spray actually).
Now we want to know what the hell this is. It looks just like the red cockroaches we get around here only about 10 times larger which made us freak out because we hate the little fuckers with passion.
Also, this is Romania and we don't get cockroaches this big around here and that's the more troubling issue.
I'd greatly appreciate if someone can shed some light on the matter.

Definitely a cockroach, smoky brown.

Well it looks like an adult American cockroach (usually found under tropical climates). The smaller ones you saw before may be German cockroaches, or young American ones.

I made a little search myself and thought it could be an American cockroach and yes, the ones before were the German type.
However, we have a temperate climate around here and this is the first time I see such an insect. A quick theory we made up is that this is the hottest summer Romania had in 50 years so maybe the fucker migrated on a ship or something and managed to survive due to the high temperatures. Damn you global warming, damn you!

I saw one in the halls of my apartment building the other day. It was in the middle of a high-traffic area in the daytime, so I named him Mr. Audacity.

texas water bug, them little freaks are EVERYWHERE around here, i think they eat small dear (that one actually looks a little small)

That is a normal cockroach. I live in Louisiana (South US) and we have what I call "outside roaches" that get way bigger than that. Inside roaches average about the size of the one you have there. What is the normal size for Romanian roaches?
>> Anonymous
I knew from the beginning it was a roach, all I wanted to know is what species it is and more importantly, why it is here. To all who are surprised by my reaction, you too would freak out if an animal you were used to would suddenly appear ten times as large. It might be a normal sight in your area but it's not where I live.

I'll stick to my original presumption, that it is indeed an America roach and apparently it's been here a longer time since more people have seen them.

It's not a water bug, its front legs are huge and this is not the case.

Well, there's the German roach which is roughly 1 cm or smaller for the males and then there's the black cockroach (Parcoblatta) which is more or less half the size of the one I posted.

The bugger probably came from the sewers through your drains and decided to look around and check if there was some good eatins in your house
(Happened to me when I was living in shanghai for a couple of months, you're lucky you don't have to deal with those cockroaches cause they fuggin fast maaan). If that was the only one then don't pay much attention to it... either that or start cleaning up your house, re-organizing furniture so there isn't places for it to hide(everywhere) and making sure your garbage is taken out in 1~4 days.

I also heard that catnip is good against them, so maybe buy some catnip plant and keep it near your sinks?

Also if it is a German cockroach then check anything around your house that is high in heat, there MIGHT be a chance they have nest in your house.

OH GOD, if it had been in my house I would've moved to a hotel by now. We caught it outside and brought it in for studying.
It was actually very slow and we had no problem catching it but maybe it was due to die anyway.

It may have taken him a while to walk from Chernobyl.

that's about average for us.
We get those things in droves, here in South Texas.

i live in hawaii and those things are extremely common, particularly at night. what makes them really fun is that they have wings and when they're scared (or cornered) they'll try to fly to safety, often landing on some foo's unsuspecting head.

we got roaches that grow to 4 inches in length here in the tropics ^_^
