I feed my rats basic hamster food seed mix. I hear that this isn't exactly good for them....would I be able to find some of the rat pellet things that ARE better for them at a place like, say....wal-mart? Or do I have to go to some store that specializes in pets?

Find an online store that will sell you Harlan Teklad. It's cheaper in the long run than even Wal-Mart.

15 pounds for $22 bucks shipped, this will last 3 months or more for 2 rats. Shelf life is 6 months.

If the rats are older (>1 year) go with the Harlan Teklad 2014 blocks from the same site, same price, lower protein for rats that are done growing.

If you must buy from a brick and mortar store, most pet stores stock Mazuri Rat and Mouse. This is a decent block, though it's a bit high in protein. Petsmart will have it. Just get them off hamster food and on something that's made for their nutritional needs.
