Whats the best substrate to use for keeping superworms, and roughly how much will I need for 500 of them?

it's not necessary, in fact I would advise against it. It makes cleaning easier.

oh and also, I would give them some slices of potato to eat for moisture (replace them when they get dry and or mouldy) and put maybe 3 layers of burlap or any other rough cloth overtop for the adults to lay eggs on if you want to breed them.

I've been constantly advised against feeding reptiles superworms as a large food source. Once in a while, I think, would be fine, but apparently, they have a very thick exoskeleton that's impossible to digest.

My box turtle loves them, but I've had to switch to feeding it orangehead roaches, just in case. I really fucking wish someone would experimentally prove the superworm issue.

Superworms actually have an easier to digest exoskeleton, better digestible content to indigestible content ratio, and better phosphorous:calcium ratio than mealworms. That's not to say they should be a staple though. Gut loading with sweet potatoes instead of potatoes helps keep the phosphorous content down, too.

OP here, thanks for all the advise, I went to pick them up today I got 500 for $11. I finally switched from crickets to superworms. Crickets are a mess, and at least 30% of them die before any of my reptiles get to eat them.

I gave the first ever super to my beardie and he loved it.He's been eating crickets for almost a year now, and has really lost interest in them, but he's devouring the supers.. And yes it's find to use superworm as a staple for some reptiles. With bearded dragons they have to be at least 16". But they should not be fed mealworms because of their hard exoskeleton and little nutritional value.

Not doubting you or anything, but mind sharing a link to information like that?

I bought them @ http://www.rainbowmealworms.net/. There website is down but you can still call the 800# on the site, or if you live close to them just pick them up, and save on shipping.

They were a bait shop many years ago, but know sell many types of worms and crickets to pet shops and hobbyists.
Crickets are 1000 for $16.50. And if I had known that my beardie was going to love these worms I'd of bought 1000 for $18.

Here's a link that gives you the nutritional value of many feeder insects:
