This poster is correct. I once had a persian who absolutely refused to be brushed However, in summer, he would get these giant matts in his fur that would pull up his skin into giant open sores if the dead fur wasn't removed regularly. So, instead of getting clawed to death in an attempt to brush his hairy ass every few days, I would just have him clipped every other month until shed season was over. Typically, the head, feet, and tail are left unshaven. It looks pretty fucking ridiculous, but it's better for both the cat and the owner.
I have seen cats shaved purposely to look like lions, but it is not terribly common (as the tail fur will grow back fucked up). Also, the "mane" is left in a lion cut, while this cat clearly has it shaved off, leading me to believe he was clipped for the above reason.
