I'm growing a chestnut tree in my room. Is watering it every day a good idea?

No, watering it every day in a pot causes the tree roots to rot and die.

Im growing an avocado tree in my room, even though they wont survive outside in canada when I have to move it out, and I think they're illegal to grow here too...

Is this a good idea?

How can growing avocado trees be illegal?

I don't think that it will survive if it is kept indoors all the year. It should be put out in spring and summer. It will probably require a very bright spot in winter and it should only be watered when dry.

Good luck

might consider it an invasive species?

Yeah something like that.

How could it possibly be invasive if it can't survive outside?

It's a big pot with a with a hole in the bottom, so superfluous water can get out. Even so, I only water it when dry (which is every day), and only a bit, not directly on the root. I've planted it this autumn (together with an acorn, but that one doesn't show a sign of life, and neither do the chestnuts outside, logically), and it started to grow about 2 weeks later. Now it's got leaves, is about 20cm tall, and in front of a window that gets afternoon sun. I will consider putting it outside in spring.

Also something odd: the first leaf doesn't look like a chestnut leaf at all. It's a small round one. Know if this is usual with trees?

obviously, your pot's soil will soak up the water, and if you water it so much it comes out the hole, you are overwatering it. That said, you don't have to completely soak the soil in order to cause the bacteria in the soil to start working on decomposing the roots.

Every other day is best.

The first leaf of a plant is always roundish, because it actually is the seed, and contains the nutrients within the seed. When the actual leaves begin sprouting, the first leaf will turn thin, yellow and drop off.

Acorns take a while to germinate.
