I was researching sugar gliders as a pet and came across this image. Is it safe to throw one across the room?
>> Anonymous
safe from who's point of view?

That one jumped from his hand and started gliding, he didn't throw it.

I have a pair, and they are a FUCKING HANDFUL to keep.

AT LEAST 2~3 hours of play time WITH YOU EVERY SINGLE DAY.

You need AT LEAST TWO.

You need special diets for them. Otherwise they won't get the nutrients and proteins they need.

Minimum sized cage for TWO is 36 height, 24 wide, 24 deep. TALLER IS BETTER FOR GLIDERS.

DO NOT BUY FROM POCKETPETS OR SUGARGLIDERS R US.

DO. NOT.

They are mills, they give HORRIBLE advice, and they are just TERRIBLE.

Sugar GLIDERS

Yes, I think it is safe.

I have a pair, but they're not that stressful to keep.

Play time isn't nearly as intense as say, playing with a dog. They're pretty entertained to just crawl around on you, or you can bat toys at them. I often do other things while playing with them.

You can have just one, but it requires double the play time, or if possible keeping a pouch on you during the day so it always sleeps on you.

The special diet is seriously just a protein cereal mixed with honey, water, and cooked eggs. Not that hard. Also there's a bunch of other things you can feed them for fun.

They make noise a lot during the night, so be prepared to deal with that. Also they emit odors, although you can get the males fixed to reduce that. They also pee on you pretty much as soon as they're on you, to make you smell good (sometimes I put mine on a towel/couch first to get the hefty pee out of the way).

Like any animal, only buy from reputable breeders.

Are there any other animals along the same lines (small furry, like to climb) that are legal to own in the US?

As far as I know sugar gliders are legal/illegal in the US by state, so look online to see what your state's laws are regarding exotic pets. The breeders and importers have a ton of restrictions on them, but on your end as an owner it pretty much boils down to whether or not your state allows them.

so sugar gliders can not exist without humans?

are they getting the bears to fix them cooked eggs?

siiigh, just another example of nature needing humans, not the other way around

Yes. Flying Squirrels.

Sugar gliders can exist just fine without humans in their natural habitat, but when you take a tropical species with a very specific diet and put them in a very unnatural environment its pretty reasonable for them to need help to survive. As far as needing people for socialization, they are naturally social creatures and (just like people) can become very depressed without enough socialization, which can lead to a laundry list of health problems. For this reason its best to get them in pairs if you're considering them as pets, as they can keep each other company when you're not around to socialize with them.

except humans live in both tropical and temperate and desert and tundra climates w/o the need to change their diet due to technology

humans 2
nature 0

Actually the diet of a person living in the Amazon Basin will be very different from the diet of somebody living in St. Petersburg.

Chinchillas, squirrels, and ferrets are all that come to mind atm. There are probably a lot more depending on where you live, but you'd have to look it up.
