I think what a lot of children lack of understanding of when it comes to death is just the idea that there can be a personality in something, and when it dies, that personality ceases to exist. I grew up on a farm and while I didn't necessarily kill things, I saw a lot of things die, and not only did it teach me that that's just the way it is, but I also quickly learned the value of a creature. Animals are just as diverse as people when you get to know them well enough; you might think, say, oh, it's a stupid chicken, it doesn't have personality, but when you have like 15 of them, and you hang around them a lot, you notice there are differences. They're not just livestock to be slaughtered, they are individual lives, which should be appreciated. Fuck, I'm sounding more and more like a faggot, but hear me out. OP, think about this cat. Think about something it does that's unique, a habit it has, the way it looks at you, the way it meows, something you like about it. These things, just like in a person, are unique to this animal. And if you fuck with it, and end up killing it, you are completely responsible for removing this unique combination from the world forever. Something you might want to try is actually naming your pets. It might help you form more of a connection to them and appreciate their presence more. If you do that and it's still just an animal to you that you feel alright abusing, then I don't think you're a pet person, and you should give them to someone who can actually form a relationship with them.
