Regarding pets, do you plan to breed them? If not, then you should probably get them neutered/spayed. I think this is more of what PETA is going against, eliminating the roots of the surplus of unwanted pets, rather than eliminating them altogether.
I'm not really sure about other domestic animals, though. I'm not actually a PETA member, but I find a lot of the crap they get to be pretty stupid.
And of course, as with any (particularly large) group there are assholes who get the wrong idea, take it to the extreme, and make a lot of noise...
