Broken Tail Anonymous
My cat's tail is broken near the top, and YES I'm going to take her to the vet, unlike some /an/ons. But the first opening they have was in 24 hours. A negligent idiot shut a window on her tail last night and didn't bother to tell me until I noticed this morning that her tail looked broken.

After looking on the internet for a while, all the answers seem to be that the vet either does nothing or amputates. there's no reason to amputate in this case, so I'm going to pay them $90 to do nothing. But that's OK, because maybe they'll give her a general check-up too.

Anyone who has had a cat with a broken tail before have any advice?

Taken from TheCatSite.

There are either 107 or 112 bones in a cat's tail, and many times cats break their tails. They can't do anything about it usually. If the break is severe they may amputate the tail. But usually they just leave it alone.

If he goes off his food, starts having litter pan accidents or otherwise acts off, I would run him in to the vet for x-rays.

my bro closed a cats tail in a door pretty hard. it had a kink in it but it survived.

Sorry OP, no advice but my cat had her tail amputated too and i feel with you on the massive cost for it.

My cat got it even worse: She fell on something sharp and tore her tail up bad. Now there's only a little stump left and she couldn't sit for a few weeks.

Make sure too give your cat lots of love (not in that way, you fucking furrys) because she will be really depressed after loosing her tail.

My cat mentally recovered after ~6-8 months after that incident.

My aunt's cat survived a car accident, but one of its many (expensive) injuries was a broken tip of tail. It didn't need amputation, and the only outcome was the cat had a cute permanent kink in the end of its tail for the rest of its life.

my grandmothers stupid ass cairn terrier was following to close behind me and got a door slammed on its tail. It had a kink in it afterwords.

I would say that if you're gonna pay $90, then I would be asking for some pain medication for the kitty while she heals.

Slit their throat in their sleep, go through their wallet and get $90 to pay for the visit, feed remains to cat.

Seconded. I'm sure your kitty will be fine, maybe it'll even have an awesome kink in its tail.

My cat got captured by foxes, and managed to escape with only a broken tail.

Take her to the vet. You can see just how bad the break is, but painkillers can always help. Another ting to ask about is if the cat can get feeling and control back in her tail from some steroid use. Didn't work on my cat, but it has been known to work sometimes.

OP here

:D
The vet said that it was such a clean break and it hasn't shifted at all, so it should heal completely in about three weeks. It took three people and a long time to find the break since it was so small, and the x-ray technician couldn't see it at all. The bone will heal and her nerves will heal too (in about 6 weeks).

She also got some vaccinations while she was there (which cost extra -_-) and they thanked me repeatedly for having a cat that is friendly and that isn't fat. o_O

Yes.

I adopted my cat (he was abandoned.) When I took him in, his tail had been broken at the base, right above his butt. From the back, it crooks to the right, about the 2/3 position on a clock.

He has no pain, it functions fine, and we named him Bentley. 8-)

Cute!

Op here, her tail looks almost normal now; it's not crooked like before. When she holds it straight up though, the end kind up flops back down a little too much than it should, but it's better than before. She can move it just fine now all the way to the tip. I think she's going to recover completely :)

My uncle's cat had is tail stuck in a revolving door so it was broken in four places. He was fine and just had several kinks in his tail. I lol'd when I first saw him because his tail looks like an orange pikachu.

Some cats might have a balance issue at first if they lose part of their tail since they're not Manxes they learn to walk run and stand by relying on it for balance. But they will manage.

No, it means she was too young and petite to get them before. She had all her shots when she was a kitten, and more when she was about 1 year old, and now that she's a couple years old, it was time for more. My 20 year old cat could probably use some updated vaccines, because some only last for several years, but they said not to bother because he's so old. He already has kidney problems; who knows how good or crappy his immune system is working.

I think the vaccines made her a little sick because she was really sleepy all day yesterday (more than usual), didn't each much, and didn't purr when I pet her. She just squinted and made made little grunts when I lightly pet her (which I took to mean 'go away I'm sleeping'). She also sneezed a few times.

But she's fine today =D and the tail is even better! So I guess I wont have the hurt the person who broke her tail...much...

pic: she always looks all mused up and scruffy after waking up from a nap ^_^
