Hey /an/, I live in Pittsburgh and I recently discovered a population of black squirrels living in a certain part of Schenley Park. Awesome!

What I'm trying to say is, do you love squirrels as much as I do?

not really. here they're imports from europe that are choking out the native species.

Schenley Park, around Camp David Lawrence

They should taste the same as any old grey squirrel though, they're the same species (with extra melanin). So it's pointless unless you just want to eat it for novelty value.

you know its now your duty to keep the niggersquirrels from prospering right?

Yeah there is a population of black grey squirrels in and around Princeton, NJ. My understanding of genetics doesn't explain why whole groups are one color. If black is recessive then there should be one or two blacks everywhere. If it is dominant then all the squirrels except a few would be black. Neither is the case, they will all be black or grey but absolutely no mixed populations.

That's easy. Even if having black fur is ressessive, if it becomes more of an advantage than having gray fur (better camoflage, etc), then, over time, all of the gray furred squirrels will die out, not passing on their (dominant) gray furred genes. And, eventually, the only squirrels left to breed will be the ones with black fur.

It's not that easy. Squirrels are saturated all over. For that to happen the population would also have to become isolated. That's not the case.

It seems as if there is some sort of "squirrel barrier" where on one side they are grey and on the other black.

According to the wikipedia article it is melanism that causes the all black. Apparently there are also populations of albino greys. All it says is this is possible because of extremely reduced predation.

They don't go into why the entire population is black.

I want to see one of the populations of albinos though. I include the pic off wikipedia for discussion.

Stupid grey squirrels are causing all the red ones to go away. D:

I think the grey squirrels leave and go to the suburbs when the black ones show up in the city.

when i was visiting a friend at U of M, I noticed that their squirrels are so tame that you have to throw somwthing at them to get them to leave. that made me sad, cuz i like wild squirrels.

Which U of M? MN and MI both have massively huge squirrels. They're not tame, they're just too fat and lazy to run.

>>69335

The U of MN Twin Cities campus had a one or two albino squirrels. They were legendary, but I think they may have died.

When I visited U of M in ann arbor, the red squirrels there were people friendly, and you could actually hand feed them. The ones in Minnesota I've noticed are nasty grey and like to pee on things and are incredibly skittish and on crack.

There was an albino squirrel at UNT that had a huge following and I think some sort of club dedicated to him. Unfortunately, he was killed earlier this year.

The squirrels on my campus(University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee) aren't afraid of humans. Sort of like the pigeons in New York.

What in the hell, there is suddenly an /an/ army here at Pitt?

Anyway, I am too lazy to get to schenley to view them, but a squirrel here in shadyside tried to talk to me today, does that count?

Good evening.

I managed to snap a photo of him during the summer. He was running around beside the Union one morning. Lucky me, I guess.

I think albino squirrels make MUCH better mascots than green eagles, don't you?

Wait.

Might you be behind a poster I saw with "*nom nom nom*" and a ninja turtle eating pizza on it?

My German teacher chides squirrels who are still out in the middle of the winter because they're doing it wrong.
"What are you doing? You should be sleeping, silly squirrel!'

where in schenley park? i live in pittsburgh and i want to see yon cuteness

I didn't know that the squirrels went that far towards Pittsburgh. I used to see them in the North Hills all the time. The little things took over the place...Would just see these black things dart across the road. I love them though and I certainly miss the squirrel-ness of Pittsburgh.

Schenley Park is close to Carnegie-Mellon University. Its like in that whole area with Pitt and Carlow and Carnegie, but maybe a little further southeast like a few blocks.

There are a lot of albino squirrels in Columbus. OSU did a study on them a few years back, and when they were done, they released them back into the wild. Well, not the wild, franklin park, so they're all around Bexley.

It's the other way round. The (European) Red Squirrel is near extinct in the UK because the (North American) Eastern Grey Squirrel has been introduced. The latter species is sometimes carrying a virus which it has become resistant to, but Red Squirrels aren't, so they die from it.

Squirrels are EVERYWHERE. I live in Hollywood and i saw one run across the street today, I also see skunks and racoons out here too. When i lived in chicago there were so many squirrels by my house i was afraid to go outside somedays cuz the little fuckers where mean.

U Of M in Ann Arbor has madd crazy squirrels that just ask for food like a panhandler, cept less annoying and much cuter. My brother's friend would always buy something after class and give something for them to eat.
