i heard somethere that dwarf hamsters like company and get along well with other dwarf hamsters, so i bought one yesterday to keep my older company.
but all they do now is fight and run around like crazy.
Do dwarf hamsters get used to each other or should I just separate them?

Gerbils do like to live together, I used to have about 15 of them in two separate tanks(males and females). They were all very happy together.

1) remove hamsters from cage
2) clean cage thoroughly
3) bath hamsters or wipe them down with the same washcloth and soap so they smell similar
4) put them back in new cage that, now that it smells like neither, is neutral territory
5) ?????
6) profit

Gerbils do better in pairs or groups. They're social animals.

They are, however, also very territorial. You can't introduce two strange gerbils. They will fight, often to the death. Once blood is drawn you're shit out of luck in terms of ever getting them to get along.

If you get two gerbils from the same litter, they will live together quite happily for their entire lives. I currently have two males from the same litter and they get along fine.

Yeah, that's what everyone was telling me, but they failed to mention that the gerbils should know each other from the start. That and the person who gave me the gerbil apparently must not have known any of the above either.

But that was about 8 years ago and the gerbil died at the nice old age of 3, so it's not an issue anymore!

Listen to the poster.

Also, do you have a wheel in the cage? The could be picking on each other because they have nothing better to do. My robo dwarf hamsters (male) who were from the same litter will pick on each other when their wheel isn't in the cage. (Cleaning and de-squeaking)
