Someone mentioned that they use the ferret nation cage for their rats a little while ago.
I would also like to get this, but I fear my rats will be able to slip out.
Is there someone I can wrap around the outside to prevent their escape? Would mesh wire be ok?

Eh, I had some gerbils chew straight through metal mesh once. It didn't even slow them down. Does their website tell you how far apart the bars are? It might be ok if you don't have a small/young rat.

that other person who told me about the cage said it was about an inch apart. i think.

and yeah. i'm getting another rat soon and more in the future, young and older.

A rat can fit though a hole about the size of a U.S. Quarter. Make sure the bars are closer together than that.

If not, then you will have to get some metal mesh to cover the sides with.

Metal mesh comes in a huge variety of different thicknesses and sizes.

Anon said he had some gerbils chew though metal mesh. I doubt that. I have built dozens of cages and have never had or seen anything like that happen. I think that either the mesh wasn't really metal even though anon thought it was, or that it was actually window screen material, which is made of aluminum (like a coke can) and is super-flimsy. Get some proper metal mesh like 3x3 steel hardware cloth (either crimped or welded). No small animal is going to get through that.

Um, aluminum is metal.

How are you going to wrap a person around it?

But it isn't the hardest metal known to man, which is Diamond. Get a Diamond metal mesh and wrap that around the cage, nothing will get in or out.

Except for Dragonforce.

Actually no, it is a metalloid (gb/2 chem class).

But seriously, that's irrelevant. Metal or not, aluminum is not suitable for an escape-proof cage for gnawing animals, especially when it is so thin as window screen. If you consider aluminum window screen to be "metal mesh" then you'd probably consider a little kid's "power wheels" to be the same thing as a real car.

I used a ferret cage for rat once. I got some chicken wire from Ace Hardware and basically wrapped one layer around the outside and covered all the edges with a strong tape (the wire edges are pretty sharp).

Worked perfectly and looked nice.

You can use metal mesh. I did that with my rats when I bought a ferret cage for them. You can attach it with metal rings or with twist ties.

Make sure that whatever mesh you use is NOT galvanized. If your rats are bar-chewers, they can develop zinc poisoning from the galvanization. It's not terribly common, but you wouldn't want to take the risk.

Get "hardware cloth" from the hardware store, It c comes with different sized holes. I use 1/2 ince for rats unless they are breeding, in which case use a smaller gage on and around the bottom. DO NOT use cages that have 1 x 1/2 inch holes, that fits a rats lower leg perfectly and they get caught and sometimes break their legs and can even die.
