My dog will NOT SHUT UP. He goes crazy and barks at every little thing, any person who walks in the house that isn't a family member (and he still does this to my brother), he freaks out and barks like crazy and wont stop till the person leaves. I've even had people he barks at give him food and pet him to get him to stop but he just keeps going off. He'll even bark at things that aren't even there.

Whats worse is the biting. He likes to play... by biting the crap out of peoples hands. I can tell it's non aggressive and he'll stop if i make a dog yelping noise. But it's really annoying.

He's about 8 months old, we got him maybe a month ago, his old owners seemed a little white trashy and were giving him away. Could it be a phase? How do I get him to stop freaking out? Gaah.

oh, picture related, as it is him. He's about the size of a cat.

Proper education.
Go to a dog school.
Also, your own behaviour does reflect on your dog.

no dog schools here, how can i educate a dog?

Also my behavior is extremely quiet and inactive, if anything i'd think it was the behavoir of his white trash previous owners.

He is so cute! My neighbor had a weener dog like that I dont know how to fix it for strangers all I know is after I babysat him a few times he liked me. He just needs to get to know the person. I wish my dog would bark at strangers he is friendly to everyone.

Be the pack leader and let that dog knows who's in charge.

This is a serious problem. One thing you can do is buy a necklace that squirts water in his face every time he barks (yes, they exist. My sister got one of those when neighbours complained about her dog). I don't think he will stop spontaneously. My neighbour had a dog that did the exact same thing - he never stopped barking until the stranger left, and that dog didn't stop doing that until he died. I wanted to kill him myself.

Your sister has a citronella collar. It's a collar, not a necklace, and it shoots citronella, not water. You retard. http://www.animalbehaviorsystems.com/

As for the OP, it's true, your dog thinks it's the boss of you. Try some obedience training classes. Most Petcos and a lot of smaller pet stores offer these. Basically, as the Dog Whisperer would tell you, you have to control your dog. Right now the dog is (in his mind) controlling you. He's a alpha and he's rotecting his turn by barking at any percieved threat. Obviously his former owners didn't take the time to train him. But as long as you stick with it, he can learn.

"He's an alpha dog and he's protecting his turf by barking at any percieved threat."

...sorry I had to correct myself

Just dominate the crap outta that dog. Try bowling him over and shaking him by the skin on his neck whenever he barks. Establish and maintain alpha dog position.

Don't let the people he's barking at give him treats if he's not shut up. That's just reinforcing the bad behavior. If you want to reward him, have the person hold the treat until he takes a moment to be silent then give it.

I can keep a handle on him pretty well, maybe I need to be more aggressive though. I'm going to start picking him up and using a stern voice (he seems to recognize that, and he hates being picked up), maybe giving him a shake, if he misbehaves...

one problem is my dad liked to "play rough" with him, let him gnaw on his hand and shook him around, so now he constantly seems to think it's okay.

and this sounds like a perfect idea.

Thanksh.

Everyone in your house has to disclipline him the same way. If you punish him and your dad plays rough with him he won't learn anything. Since he's small, you can shout "no" and flip him on his back GENTLY (submissive position) and hold him there till he calms down. Don't shake him, hit him, throw him or any such thing. That has nothing to do with making him submit to you and will only make him crazier.

Two words: 12 gauge. The stupid thing won't bark again.
