That's a malamute right? It's hueg like xbox. Looke like at least 120 pounds. My Siberian looks like a pansy compared to it.

Escape artists huh? Sure didn't think too far ahead. "Ok I got up here... uh, now what? Shit!"

malamutes are awesome dogs! i want one but it would be the end of my career as a fat computer nerd probably (malamutes need lots of exercise)
>> Anonymous
malamutes are huge!

My grandfather had a few on the range he worked on. Ones I remember are Chinook and then Lobo.

I remember Lobo the most, he was 200 lbs. What was annoying was he would come up next to you, while you were standing, and then you would start to pet him. You could reach his back easily without bending. The problem was when you did this he would start to lean on you. He was generally aggressive toward men if he didn't know them and for some reason hated one of my male cousins. One of my female relatives would have to escort him when he felt the house.

Chinook was Lobo's father and apparently even bigger. He got out once and made his way to the local elementary school. The whole school was freaking out thinking some wolf got lose and was going to kill one of the children. My grandfather and grandmother would take care of some of the local kids now and then. One of the girls recognized Chinook, went out, swat him on the head, and said "Bad Chinook! We are going home." Whole school lost it and thought she was dead. Chinook just bowed his head a little and followed her back home.

If I ever had got a dog I wanted one of these although I would need enough land first.

So, are Huskeys/Malamutes good animals? I was thinking of getting one...

Smart? Pleasant? Nice?

And is their much of a difference between Huskey/Malamute's personalities?

A dog is only as good as its owner.
Raise any dog properly and it will turn out to be a fine companion and member of society.

They are great dogs, if you have time, a mean ass exercise routine, are outdoorsy, have no social life, etc.

They have ADD that makes 5 year olds look like they are extremely focused. So if they are not tired, then they are bored. If they are bored, then they wreck havoc on everything in a 20 mile radius.

They are escape artists so you need 6 foot high fences with live wire on the bottom and top of it, or crate them when you are gone. In before everyone who knew a Husky that could stay in a 4' tall fence with no live wire. Ancedotal info is as retarded as you are.

They love to dig, this can be redirected to a specific spot with time, or crate them when you're gone. But the dog is either a digger or not. If he's not, congrats!

Their prey drive is hueg like xbox. They will obessively look for a prey they saw for half a second in the exact same spot for a month. In my walking routine my dog checks EVERY spot he saw a prey in over the last two months. The list is growing so much it's amazing he can remember where every place is.

They CAN get along with other animals, properly socialized. But don't count on it.

My Huskies pull me on a cart full sprint twice a day about 10 miles a day. If you just run them, you'll need more. If you walk them, might as well sell your house and your car and quit your job you'll be walking all day all night every day!

There are always variations, it's best to assume the worst with huskies and be happy with how much easier to keep they may be from what I say. If your dog is happy with a daily 3 mile walk, count your blessings. If you don't need live wire, count your blessings. Etc. But either rescue and know what you are getting or prepare for the worst and get a puppy.

I have fostered huskies, so I'll tell you now if you're not dog-oriented, don't do it. One who I fostered COULD NOT be contained. If you put him in a kennel, he bent it. If you put him behind a baby gate, he jumped it. And when he couldn't be contained, he'd immediately go find a chairleg to chew on despite all the dog-appropriate chews he was given-- so if he ever had to be left alone, there needed to be an assigned dog-sitter. It was hellish, I was so glad when he got his permanent adopter.

Your typical husky isn't quite as bad as the one I mentioned above, but they're known for being stubborn. If you want a dog to always listen to you, get a lab. A husky is definitely not usually an obedience class contender (always exceptions, but I'm speaking from my usual experience). If you love or have cats, it's probably not a good choice-- there ARE huskies who are cat friendly, but they're a lot less common than those who would rather eat them. Same goes for huskies and small dogs, or any animal smaller than they are in general.

You better have energy and self-motivation to get your ass up and exercise the dog, or it will simply take out its boredom on your house, your yard, and every living animal nearby.

They can also be very picky eaters. One I fostered would eat ONLY canned food and he'd actually starve before he'd eat anything else. I was told this wasn't unusual for a husky. When I got him, the vet told me he needed to gain 15 pounds.

So, in short, not a good first time dog. If you have a personality which is patient, active, and not overly serious (you got to be able to take getting your yard dug up with a sense of humor), it could be a good match. Some husky perks I've found is that they usually don't bark excessively and I've never seen one who didn't love children.

LOOK AT THIS DOG
>> Anonymous
>>183033

My Husky stole two chicken breasts from me once that I left on a countertop.

He would not eat for 4 days afterwards. He was whining, howling, crying and generally being annoying the entire time.

After 4 days of no food, he gave in and started eating kibble again. Shithead. LOL.

My dog is "cat friendly" in that, as long as the cat's don't move faster than a slow walk, he will ignore them.

Though a lot of this is true to a certain degree, my Husky is completely unlike your description. I live with her in a 1200 sq ft apartment and most of the time she just sleeps on the couch or her bed. I take her out for 20 minutes before school in the morning and for 30 minutes after work at night half of the week. On the weekends, I take her for a few hours to the park and the beach. They really aren't as energetic and crazy as I've read.

I walk mine without a leash or collar everywhere. She has ran away only once to chase a rabbit in the woods, but I found her at my doorstep 20 minutes later, though I have heard this is a one in a million type of behavior in Huskies.

She's very mild mannered, never barks (only howls and grunts), and all my neighbors love her. Comes when called, sits when told, even does a few tricks I've taught her for snacks. I couldn't ask for a better dog, and I have owned a dalmatian, German Sheppard, Argentinian Dogo, and a Lab in my life.

Goddamn, you're lucky. I'm>>183033, and I've got to admit, all of the huskies I've interacted with got a "you're so cute I'll struggle to tolerate everything wrong you do" kind of reaction from me. Any idea why yours might be different? Breeding, upbringing, etc?

>>183283
I have no idea, honestly. I got her from the pound, she was a two year old stray. She was pretty good off the bat, but it took me a few weeks to discipline her to be more attentive. Some guy I met on the street told me he breeds dogs and she's a pure-bread, possibly even part wolf (?). But mostly I think it's just luck, a mild mannered creature in dog's clothes. Too bad she's spaded, otherwise I could get her certified and breed her.

I'm going to get reamed and called a PETAfag by some intelligent anon if I explain too much. The breeding part threw me off the most. Just because a dog's a nice pet doesn't make them a good breeding candidate. Either way, at least she's spayed so that won't happen.

Not this "PETAfag"'s fault you don't understand good breeding practices. By the way, all decent animal lovers hate PETA, including me.

her/his husky is either made entirely out of a grain flour and water concoction made to rise with heat and yeast or is part wolf, but it has had something done to it with a small digging tool so it cannot have puppies.

Hahaha! I love this pic... the story behind it goes that this owner took his dog out to a lake near their property, and the top was frozen over. BUT, as a bonus, the condensation on top of the ice made it like glass, so he took the picture of what looks like his Canine Messiah.
