Hey /an/,

I have a 2 year old black lab who's very energetic and happy, but when we take her on car rides, she gets terrified.

I'm not sure if she's actually terrified, but she pants fast the entire time and shakes a bit, often standing up and repositioning for no good reason.

Is there any way to fix this behaviour?

Take her out on car rides some more.

Or don't put her on the back seat (I guess that't where she sits) but let her lie down before the front passenger's seat. Our labrador is very comfortable with that. The car shakes less there and she can sleep if she want to.
Our dog is a coward by the way, but just not in cars.

just put her in the car for a few minutes without going anywhere, and then let her out and give her treats and shit

do that like 2 or 3 times a day for a little bit and then just start driving for like 5 minutes gradually

etc

maybe put a squeaky or chewy toy in the car as well

It's common. Don't feed her for a couple hours before you put her in the car, and try feeding her some ginger snaps (they help with carsickness).

Otherwise, to get her used to it, put her in the car ALL THE TIME. It sounds like she gets overexcited/nervous, so to get her used to it just start putting her in the car and sitting in there with her for a few minutes, then getting out again. Slowly build up (start turning on the engine and sitting in the car with her, but not going anywhere, then when she's used to that put her in the car and drive around the block - just 5 minute drives at first). After a while she'll realise the car's nothing to be nervous about.

Slight derail, but does that dog remind anyone else of K.K.?

Pretty sure that's the point. :<

My dog does the same thing, she's fine when she's out of the car though. We got meds from her vet that make her ultra sleepy, but we don't like to drug our dog...if you're ok with it, look into some drugs that will calm her down.
