GUINEA PIGS. : D Anonymous
so my friend gave me her guinea pig cause she's allergic to it and can't look after it anymore
so i'm trying to find a home for it right now

one problem: she's missing patches of fur on her body and i don't know why. who the fuck is gonna want a semi-bald guinea pig? that just screams disease to me

so i looked it up and i narrowed it down to mange mites, lack of nutrition or self mutilation. I hope to fuck its not mites cause i don't want my rats to get them. she eats hartz guinea pig diet and she's a chubby little thing, but she could still be missing the vitamins and minerals that she requires so i haven't ruled that out completely. also she never got to play or get attention or anything too when she was with my friend, so she might have done it to herself out of loneliness or boredom. halp please. D:

tldr; i'm trying to find a home for my friend's guinea pig but she's missing patches of fur and i don't know why

pic related, it's her. ):

Give it back to your friend and tell her that it's her fucking animal, it's up to her to find the appropriate care and home. If she can't have it in her house any more because of her allergies, fine, keep it for her, but tell her to do her own fucking legwork.

Or better yet, just feed the damn thing to the neighbourhood cats.

It's almost always mites.

Went through a similar thing with three cavies (the proper name). Lost two, but the last is healthy and happy after some fairly expensive shots at a specialist vet.

Get the thing mites treatment before it kills itself or dehydrates. Also, believe it or not there's several animal rescues devoted to cavies... No links 'cause I'm lazy, but go on and have a search.

why don't you keep it yourself? give it a nice life instead of sending it off to an unknown fate

shave her entire body and advertise her as a rare hairless guinea pig.

Vet. She needs a shot of ivermicin if it's mites.
Really, get in touch with a cavy rescue. They actually care about them.

It's a beautiful piggie. God, I hate people who dump animals like that.

i can't keep her cause a) my mom would falcon punch me in the face and b) i already have two rats, two dogs, a budgie and 2 fish. i can't afford to keep anything else. D:

You must take it to the vet and contact a cavy rescue.
Google is your friend. Make you friend pay for the visit.

It's sick. Leave it to an idiot to eat a sick animal.

It's probably mites if it's on that much of her body, but it could be self-mutilation, too, especially if she was being ignored and doesn't have a cagemate.

I went away for a long weekend about a month ago and came back to find my one pig with a big bald spot on her nose. As far as I can tell, she was mad for not having me there for so long and pulled her hair out, or she was fighting with my other pig, which they rarely do when I'm around. I had someone stop in every day to make sure they had food and water and veggies, but I doubt she played with them much.

KEEP IT... you're letting it down in its moment of need

Wait, why did she have it in the first place if she's allergic? And don't say she wasn't allergic when she got it, I don't believe that.

Or-r-r-r-r-r.....it's RINGWORM.

Yay, ringworm. It's more common than you think!

I'm allergic to guinea pigs and didn't know this until about 2 months into owning the things. Never really made the connection as I'm not really allergic to anything too specific, and it was spring anyway, so I figured something in the air was bugging me. Piggies went bye-bye.

I also was fully convinced of this when I visited a friend's house and started playing with her suuuper friendly pig and my eyes puffed all up and got itchy after petting him for a bit.

1. Find a hungry Peruvian
2. Sell it to them
3. Profit!

In the 5 months I've had my guinea pigs, I've realized that I'm actually allergic to their hay.

Every time I give them hay, I sneeze like mad and my eyes water up and I get small hives for the next hour or so.

However, I made a commitment to them and they're really fucking cute (even though they're little jerks that don't return the affection) so I'm willing to put up with it for the next 4-5 years until they've lived their lives.

They just better not live for like 8 years out of spite, the little fuckers...

Hey OP, make her feed them ORCHARD GRASS, rather than timothy hay. Timothy hay is a very very common allergen (im allergic to it too). Orchard grass is a great alternative and your friend wont be allergic to it since its grass. I doubt she's allergic to the guinea pig since they don't shed the way cats and dogs do.

>>302244here. Where does one obtain orchard grass? I haven't noticed anything but timothy hay and alfalfa hay in the pet stores I go to. It'd be cool to not break out when I hold my piggies.

>>302256i don't think she's ever given her guinea pig timothy hay. :\ maybe she was allergic to the bedding, i dunno.

OP here, the guinea pig's gone to another home now. i barely had her for a day. ): anyway, the guy who took her said that her fur was probably bad from a lack of vitamin c because apparently you should put vitamin c drops in their water. i think my friend only ever fed it the general guinea pig mix and never ever gave it veggies or anything. when i had her i gave her some carrot and she went bonkers for it.
