I'll post again when its life circle is complete...but that won't be until next year, cause they need to stay over winter

>>282287
+ burying itself in the ground when OM NOM NOM is over

But you're right, there is no kind of defensive ability, therefore it simply looks badass to scare off others.

I keep finding scary-looking pink caterpillars crawling around my house! Today I found the third one. I have no idea where they're coming from. Yesterday I stepped on one crawling around in the house. An hour later I went to go get it to throw it away and it was gone. I guess it came back to life and crawled off.

is there a place that i can buy one of thoughs green ones?

and it gets out... oh joy a new invasive species.

Kinda off topic, but I wish I knew what exactly goes on inside a chrysalis. It'd be awesome if you could somehow put a camera in there and watch the whole process. I bet it's insane.
>> Anonymous
I want a caterpillar as a pet. Can I buy a huge caterpillar than stop it from metamorphing into a butterfly? Like in pokemon where you can stop them from evolving and wait until a higher level.

If you're from europe, I could show you the site where I bought mine. They keep selling those every now and then.

>>282614
You can...sorta. Many non-tropic caterpillars only have 1 generation per year. That means when my big green guys pupated inside the soil, I have to keep them cold over winter, otherwise nothing will happen inside the chrysalis. Some pupae will even skip the next year and hatch in 2 years.

>>282588
I think many entomologists did research on the developments during metamorphosis, but it's not that easy to get information from the internet, you probably should ask a professional or look out for literature.

>>282557
Ask the insect expert from the identification thread, he might know.

Inside the chrysalis the body breaks down into protein matter. It literally turns into goo. The parts that don't break down are like the heart and whatnot. The rest slowly reform and turn into the required parts of the moth/butterfly/beetle/etc. A caterpillar/grub is so big because most of the fat in it's massive body will be used to fuel the transformation process and keep the vital organs functioning throughout the process.

It gets even worse, scientists found out that some botterflies/moths can remember things they experienced as a caterpillar. They accomplished this by letting the cats walk through 2 different tubes, one without any danger and another one with small electrical shocks. They did this until all of the cats went through the non-shocked tube. When the butterflies hatched from those caterpillars, they instantly remembered which tube to go. So, even though their body was almost totally decontructed, this information survived somehow.
I shat some bricks when I first read about this.

Also, note how some pupae nervously waggle around when disturbed. It shows that they keep some muscular tissue to defend themselves.

>>283047
Dude, have some patience, I took the pic a few days ago...they won't hatch before next year, I might update when they're pupae if you keep this thread alive until then.

Actually, many Saturniid larvae wiggle as pupa because they orientate their bodies to see the sunlight. Many species base whether or not to hatch after about 2 weeks as pupa, or to overwinter (diapause) until the spring by how many hours of daylight they see. They also use the light/day timing to know when to emerge as an adult, most emerge at daybreak but others are known to emerge at night.

Sphingidae larvae wiggle because most burrow into the soil as a pupa. Though I don't doubt what you said, I think the main purpose was orientation, not defense
>> Anonymous
That is the bestest caterpillar ever. Did you name it?
>> Anonymous
>>283212
I have 8 of them and they all look the same.
Also, I don't know their gender, so naming would be pointless...
