My rats seem to be getting little specks of black stuff near the front of their eyes. It doesn't seem to be "gunky" or anything. I'd get some pics if I could, but I dont think I could get the little niggers to hold still long enough to get a clear picture.

Is this normal? I'm wanting to clean it off, but I have no idea how I could clean an area so close to their eyes...especially with them always moving around.

They might have fleas. I have noticed that when my dogs get fleas, black specks appear in their coats, and it's actually flea shit. You can test it to see if it is by getting it wet and seeing if it secretes like a reddish-brown liquid. That's the digested blood of the animal it has been feeding on. Do you think it's possible they may have fleas?

I'm 99% sure they don't. They've been with us since they were a month old, got them maybe a month or 2 ago, and they haven't been exposed to any fleas.

It's ONLY around their eyes. Kinda like when your eyes get crusty in the morning and shit.

Just for future reference: You can hold rats by the scruff of the neck, similar to cats, and they'll go limp. They look ridiculous, but it doesn't hurt or anything and is good for baths/trimming claws/etc.

Not OP but damn I need to try that. I love my ratties to death but I'm covered in scratches from where they crawl all over me.
