Ive already made my decision but id like to see what anonymous thinks. I have a chinese water dragon for about 2 years. He was doing fine until last december when we moved him into a larger habitat and i assume he became depressed. From then on he would eat very little and his condition worsened. I dont make much money and ive already spent a couple hundred on vet visits only to be met with an "I dunno" from various veterinarians. The last few months ive been force feeding em to no avail. Now hes definitely on the brink of death and im met with a few options.

Keep feeding it even though its condition is steadily worsening and could die any day.

Give it away, however finding a decent owner who is willing to learn about such a finicky animal is hard to find. Especially one willing to take care of one so close to death. That is if it doesnt die before i find it a new owner.

Let it loose outside, it will be in nature where it belongs however it will most definitely die in its condition due to lack of strength and unfamiliar predators.

Death seems pretty apparent anyway i look at it.

There really isnt a black and white answer to this. The best u can hope for is a light gray :/

Deal with the ramifications of being a pet owner. You knew what you were getting into when you bought the animal. If you release it in the wild it will show that you are immature, and unfit to be responsible for another living animal.

take it for a nice ride, show it the sights before it dies, then throw it out the window before u get home.

Was it tested for parasites?

More than likely either the conditions in the new enclosure are wrong, you neglected to provide something essential to its health and the effects only recently began showing showing, or it was infected with parasites and the stress of moving it to a new enclosure screwed with its immune system and it can't cope with them.

Releasing a sick animal from a completely foreign environment is an absurdly idiotic suggestion.
