so i've got a new cat, 1 year old female, black (not the one in the pic)

the first thing i did was to cut its claws to manageable level since it managed to seriously damage some furniture and destroy a blouse i had laying around on the first day.

thing is i fucked up and cut too much on one of the claw, which i noticed too late since kitty remained really still in my lap during the whole process. i only noticed something was wrong because i saw a bit of blood when i verified what i did.

of course i was very sorry, and petted it to make amend and fed it with good things. weird thing is kitty didn't seem to mind at all since it remained the whole evening in my lap, and took a little nap beside me when it got off.

BUT the day after, it started to act really afraid and aggressive toward me. growling at me, attempting to claw me and shitting and pissing itself if i try to approach it, or even if i'm just near it.

so dear /an/, seeing that this is my first cat and my first 'big' pet, have i alienated it for life? how do i get it to love me?

oh yeah, and will the shitting and pissing everywhere stop or do i have to retrain it to use the litter or something?

Well, since it was a day later, I don't think it was related to the nail-cutting. But, you know, be careful with that in the future. Shit hurts.

As for the hysterics when you came nearby... I don't know. Had you done something that day that would make you smell different? Like played with a dog or something? That's all I can think of.

Or maybe the cat's just crazy. It happens.

Maybe you should learn to cut the nails of a cat like you do your own instead of sitting on the couch eating potato chips slashing away with the peerlessness of a common butcher.

go to a vet and get the nail checked out. it may be infected, making the cat feel weak/threatened, and being new to you feel scared hence the hostility.

HAVE THE VET TEACH YOU HOW TO CLIP THE CLAWS. THERE ARE ALSO PRODUCTS OUT THERE TO STOP BLEEDING SHOULD YOUR DUMBASS CUT TOO DEEPLY INTO THE QUICK.

your cat will be cranky due to pain and whatnot... but it'll forgive you in time and use a box. how did you get it again? take it to a vet before that infection kills it due to your carelessness.

also infected nail = pain = hostile cat

nails don't get infected in less than one day, dumbasses.

OP here, i've re checked its claw nothing seem infected and no reaction while touching and it's not bleeding anymore so i guess it's okay. but thanks for bringing this issue to my attention, i didn't though of that

this cat is weird, it still hissed at me whenever i approched when i've gotten home today (and no, i didn't play with other animals) and i had to battle with it with a towel so i could catch it to check nails. but once i'd gotten it in my arm it went all godamn cute, burrowing nose under my arm, rubbing up my fingers for caress and stuff. as i type this, kitty is taking a nap on my boobs and seems to be very content, which is kinda baffling since our earlier battle was quite epic

i'm not complaining though, it's really cute at the moment. i just wish the hissing is not gonna start again tomorrow, which i supect is going to happen

that and the shitting everywhere, damn i had a long moment when i just go home where the only thing i wanted to do is to throw the little fucker out of the window. it shitted absolutly everywhere including in my bed, and managed to smear the shit around on the linens too. in fact there seemed to be a lot of it, i'm wondering if i'm feeding it too much.

anyway, tl;dr

thanks for the help /an/

sounds like you've got a psycho cat on your hands. Congrats.

Bing bing, surprise! Most birds and four-legged mammals have veins in their nails. That's why you go get lessons on how to clip their nails, if that's ever necessary.

Also, get her a scratching post. That's the proper way to manage cat nails in the long term.

Like the previous anon suggested, get a scratching post. Also, to prevent her from clawing shit that she shouldn't be clawing, get a squirt gun. Just give her a squirt every time she starts to claw on something that she shouldn't be clawing on. She will learn very quickly to leave it alone. Do those things, and clipping her claws should be completely unnecessary.

Sounds like the cat calmed down once you took charge and showed you weren't a threat. Do that towel and petting thing as much as it takes and she will realize you are not trying to hurt her. Eventually you won't need the towel or to chase her down.

One of our cats was very standoffish for a few years. She would hiss and growl if you picked her up, but every so often she would jump on a lap and become unimaginably loving

Get it declawed. Or kill it and get a dog.
