My Dog Anonymous
Hey I have been noticing lately that my dog has been less responsive to me calling him over to me and it's like he doesn't even hear me, what's causing this, he usually comes right when I call him. He also doesn't like looking me in the eyes, that's probably some dog thing but I would like to know what's causing him to ignore me.

well I didn't want to say anything, but...you've really let yourself go. God, just get on the treadmill for a couple of minutes, jeez.

My dog never looks me in the eye. I think i read somewhere that eye contact makes the dog think that you are going to do something bad to it.¯\(°_o)/¯

ho damn ^^;

I been MAKING my dog look me in the eye for years.

Staring into a dogs eyes is a challenging or a threatening gesture. Don't do it unless you are absolutely certain the dog is only testing you and will not attack you. If the dog thinks you are higher up in the pack, it will look away.

I was always told when meeting a new dog you should look above it's eyes, (like its forehead for example) because that means you're higher in rank than him.

*shrug* I haven't had any problems with dogs yet.

how old is your dog?

Yeah, dogs don't like it when you look them in the eyes unless they're really, really used to it.

Are you sure he isn't getting old / deaf? That's what I thought at first 'cause my best friend's dog is starting to get like that.

OP here, he's only 3 about to turn 4

My family adopted an old Collie a while back and she was deaf. Apparently, according to our vet, Collies, like Dalmations, have a propensity towards hearing problems.

Take your dog to a vet to make sure.

Looking a stranger in the eyes can be a threat. However, if you trust each other, your dog shouldn't have a problem looking you in the eyes, as long as you aren't mad. Wolves and dogs can say a lot to each other through glances. You could even use it yourself. Sometimes I will just look at my dog in certain ways if I want her to come, stop doing something, and so on.
