Something about these 2 lines is paradoxical.

Males - Typically more mellow, especially when they get older. Gigantic testicles. Pee dribblers.

Females - Typically more energetic, lasts their entire lives. Also pee dribblers, but to a lesser extent.

Since rats are very much individuals, your results may vary. And they only pee dribble because they love you.

I prefer males because they're more relaxed and it's easier to train them to ride on your shoulder. The drawback is gross rat balls, but if you have extra $$ you can have them removed.

One thing, please consider a same-sex pair. If you've been researching I trust you've read this a lot already. Rats are naturally social, and being kept singly (even with you for amusment) is stressful for them. They're a lot more shy and prone to illness if kept alone. I had 1 and then I had a trio. The trio was much healthier and mello overall.

What's wrong with their balls???

I have three darling male rats (getting a fourth one in a couple of weeks when he's old enough to move) and I don't think their balls are gross. Not like the ball-sack is bald or something.

You get used to it.
I was the exact same way when I first got a pair of rats. I walk around with them sometimes and some people don't want to hold them because of the balls, but they get used to them too.

An option to the balls problem would be getting them neutered.
Anyone have an estimate amount it would cost to do so? Out of curiosity since I might be taking in another male soon and I hear he's a little rat-aggressive.

Males are very laid-back, and believe me, I know, since I have six males. They love sitting on you and eating from your hand when you watch TV, but you'd have to deal with them dribbling pee on you. It's not anything noticable, just wash your hands after you're done with them. Then again...do that with any rodent or animal you handle. Females seem more hyper, and like playing on you and jumping around, but be aware that they form tumors much more often than males. But really, you cannot judge solely from their gender. I have two male rats that are as hyper as any female. You just have to try your luck!

this is true, my last 3 albino rats were all female and died from tumours. so sad :(
