wasps are the assholes of the animal kingdom. What exactly do they do? Nothing! They just go around stinging people. Bees also sting but they serve a pupose. Wasps don't do shit.
>> Anonymous
I saw a wasp the other day.

Disgusting creatures.
>> Anonymous
Many of them kill spiders, lay their eggs inside them and their babies eat their way out of the spider's corpse...so thats pretty cool...I guess it depends if you hate spiders or wasps more. Also many wasps don't have painful stings. Many also are important biological controls killing agricultural pests...many gardening suppliers actually sell wasp cultures for your garden/farms, without which whole crops could be lost.

Sorry anon you lose

Holy shit, is OP's pic the way the wasp is supposed to look?

To quote Viz comic:

"Bees are cute cuddly flying orange-and-black teddy bears that make deliciouse honey and when they sting you, they die nobly"

"Wasps have nasty little Darth Vader faces, they don't make honey and they can sting you more than once. Also, they chase you if you run away"
>> Anonymous
I stepped on a bumblebee once and it died and it hurt pretty bad, but not too bad.
I stepped on a wasp once and it lived but didn't chase me. It hurt a lot more. Fuck bugs, I'm not leaving my house anymore

i know like any other hated insect they have an important role to play but when i see these fuckers along with roaches, mosquitoes, crane flies, and crickets (i know, i suck), i run like hell.

That's actually a Dirt Dobber. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dirt_dobber
Annoying bastards that build nests, but generally aren't too much of a problem ( Pretty much flee instead of sting, sting isn't too bad.)

Cicada Killer wasps are beneficial, they just hunt those damn noise machines. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cicada_Killer_Wasp
>> Anonymous
I hate the nasty rust red ones with black wings...those things are rather aggressive and had a nasty tendency of hiding in the grass until I tried to mow and then attacked my person.
>> Anonymous
Wasps are pest control units. I hear they can take up to 200 bugs back to their nest in the space of an hour, not sure if there's any truth to that but if so, wow.
>> Anonymous
Wasps kill bad shit. Thankfully we primarily have yellowjackets around here instead of paper/mud wasps, they tend to bite over stinging and even their sting isn't too bad.
>> Anonymous
Fuck yellow-jackets. Even if they are "pest control", those fuckers always put themselves as close to human traffic as it seems is possible.

I had a nest jack a bird-house this past spring. Any other time, they hide along side the house.

I'd say mosquitoes are the assholes of the animal kingdom. I'd like to know if they serve any useful ecological purpose.

You've both got it wrong. Some wasps are beneficial and mosquitoes are food for other creatures. The real assfuckers of the animal kingdom are the ticks. Enjoy your lymes.

here's a question: is there anything that wasps can do to help us that "pest-control" insects i actually like (praying mantises, dragonflies, etc.) can't?

i've never got the shit stung or bitten out of me by a dragonfly.

the real question is: who'd win in a fight?

dragonfly vs. wasp, go.
>> Anonymous
>>278670
Some of those wasps that lay eggs inside things can actually reach bettle larvae that are sequestered within the trunk of a tree. This is a very valuable service, even if it is INSANELY CREEPY, because those larvae are serious pests that are otherwise extremely well-protected from predation.

The trouble with this notion (that extinct species deserve their fate due to lack of fitness) is that the bar for "adaptability needed to survive" is wildly inconsistent. The amount of adaptability required is essentially random, and eventually, through chance alone, the survival requirements will peak at a point that nothing -- or at least, nothing multicellular -- can survive. Do we therefore /all/ deserve extinction?
>> Anonymous
>>278878
In essence: yes. And history shows that evolution works exactly that way since 99% of all species that ever walked the earth, went extinct again.
But maybe, just maybe, human intelligence is the solution for ultimate adaptability (we can even survive in space!).
>> Anonymous
>>278878
All organisms will eventually go extinct. That's like asking if all life deserves death.
>> Anonymous
>>278878
If we go extinct then we deserve extinction. Most predators in the animal kingdom are quite simply obsolete. They invested in strength, teeth, claws, ect... guess what? Those traits are worthless compared to a powerful brain. Humans have weak bodies but we've managed to kick the shit out of every species we've come across.

Damn, you guys forgot about locusts?

Locusts are basically the assholes of the animal kingdom. Alone, they're actually pretty peaceful but, for some fucking reason, get two or three together in the same room and they go absolutely batshit. They start going under some fucked up metamorphosis where they change color and expand in size. Afterwards, they march towards other locusts to try to cannibalize them in a freaky Incredible Hulk effort. More locusts retardedly join in on the fun and after a while, there is a swarm that is quite literally constantly moving to stay alive. The ones in front are pretty much fucked victims, but the ones in the rear are the real assholes due to the fact that they are steering the swarm. For weeks, they can march on, destroying and devouring anything that gets in their way. Also, unlike some swarms, these fuckers can fly. Hell, they scared the Mormons shitless back in the 1700s-1800s.

The most fucked up part? They eventually decide to stop, go back to their original form, and pretend the whole swarm didn't happen. What a bunch of jerks.

But we'll go extinct too, eventually. Everything will. Moreover, extinction is at least as much about luck as it is about anything else -- nature is not a meritocracy.
That means that the natural extension of yout thinking is that /everything/ deserves extinction. I think it can be argued that, under those circumstances, the notion of desert loses its meaning.

What they eat is bugs that eats our crops and kill our fruit trees. You may think you dont care, but if you do eat food, you do care.

That's said, I'm very alergic to their sting (to the point of dying) and avoid them as much as is possible.
>> Anonymous
>>278957
they are the scavengers of the seas.
In deadsea areas where there are no fish left, we always encounter huge swarms of jellyfish.
They fill up the niche of the fish.
