any small critter owner knows that carefresh bedding is pretty much the best bedding that you can buy for your pet. i always buy it for my rats.
it's also rather expensive for us to buy just so our pets can poop all over it.

anyway, i found this bedding at wal-mart called Critter Care. it says it's made from the same stuff that carefresh is made from, but it's wayyyy cheaper. i wanna know if anyone uses this brand of bedding, and what they think of the quality before i buy any for my ratties. srsly, this stuff's like $5 canadian for a 10 litre bag. shit's cheap

I don't really like Carefresh personally, especially not the kind in the OP's picture. I find that it creates a very foul odor when mixed with animal urine. And even before then, it smells like damp, cheap brown paper towels they use in schools and shit.

I've heard that the very expensive Carefresh Ultra White, or whatever, can minimize well, but I think I saw a big bag of it at our PetSmart for like 20 bucks or so.... no thank you!

I prefer to use aspen or kiln dried (important!) pine. I was using Kaytee SoftSorbent for awhile for a mouse who had developed a bedding allergy to pine, but he lost all his fur when exposed to that, and apparently, there are other reports of that happening, followed by death - mine didn't die thank goodness!

I also sometimes use organic soil that I bake to sterilize it. It minimizes odors so fantastically, but is not as visually attractive as wood shavings, IMO.

I use the white Carefresh Ultra, but yes, it is VERY expensive for bedding. For me it's worth it because it's not dusty, it has no odor even when wet, and it's very absorbent without getting gross.

Regular Carefresh smells like wet newspaper and it's too dusty. Makes them wheezy.

Just doing a quick google search, some say Critter Care is too dusty. I guess it wouldn't hurt to try it out, but if they get sneezey I would throw it out.

Aspen shavings are my second choice, but you have to change it a lot more often, and I ALWAYS have to freeze the bags overnight because every bag I've gotten had mites.

OP here.
i always use the coloured carefresh ultra. i used to use the regular carefresh, but as anon said, it smells weird when it gets wet, so i switched over.

i think i will give critter care a try when i run out of carefresh and see how my rats like it. if it's no good, it's not a big deal cause it's cheap as balls. (: i get a discount on my carefresh anyway cause get it from the pet store i work at, but it's still really expensive for me.
