Dear /an/,

It's time once again to play our favourite game, 'fill my fishtank'. I found this tank on the side of the road today, it had been put out for hard rubbish collection, so I appropriated it. It's 45x40x30 cm, and I already have a heater and water conditioner and food, etc. My betta died two weeks ago, so I was looking for new fish anyway, and figured I might be able to make this tank more interesting than a single betta wandering around, since it's large enough to accommodate a few smallish fish. So, suggestions?

In Australia at least I know there are these tropical fish you can buy which glow like as if they where under a black light when the room is dark. Have a look around at your pet store and find some awesome fish, they can make good talking points. We used to have a fish that liked to play dead and everybody would ask if it was dead so we would have to go poke it so it would swim around to proove it was alive.

Fill with mercury. Drink.

They sound awesome, but a quick google seems to suggest that they're illegal in Australia, as they're genetically modified and haven't been approved by the government yet. But I'll still try to find some.

zebra danios (sp?) are small nice looking fish. Make sure to buy some plants and small decorations cuz they like to swim around and hide. You can still see them but they'll be more active and entertaining that way.

Not to be Captain Obvious here, but you have tested it to make sure it doesn't leak, right? :)

Dwarf puffer fish with a heavily planted scenery. Don't worry they're fresh water. They're small, your tank is small and honestly you cant put much in something that size.

Honestly a betta is your best option or one platy or molly.

Yeah go with a dwarf puffer, some anacharis, and some java fern. Maybe throw some small snails, ghost shrimp, and an otocinclus in there too.

Some Endler's live bearers could also be good.

Put some white cloud minnows up in durr.

you might want to get a LID

fish kinda. yanno. jump.

That's too small for any schooling fish but a betta would be my choice too. "GloFish" is really a genemanipulated Zebra Danio, which is a schooling fish that likes to swim lenghtwise so please leave that out :3 Dwarf puffer could fit too as it's quite passive and doesn't need much space, and it enjoys the company of its own kind. Good luck in maintaining your minitank!

Looks like it's at least three gallons if not more. That could be enough room for some Endler's live bearers if a mini power filter is used.

According to a magic internet formula, its 7 gallons, and no it doesn't leak, and yes I'll get a lid, I said I found it on the side of the road, what do you want? Research also turned up Guppy's, Dward Gouramis, Tetra's, Rasboro's and some of the smaller Killifish as possibilities

a small group of pearl rasbora? tiny and awesome.

Goldfish can reach lengths of over a foot long, NO goldfish

I'll agree with the white cloud minnows. They're really easy to take care of, and they like to show off.

Unless you've been overfeeding your goldfish with some sort of weird supplement food, they shouldn't have grown that long in any forseeably near future.

If you want to get a goldfish, OP, get a pearlscale. They just kinda float in the middle of the tank, lulz.

Got a couple of neon tetras and some guppies, and they're all happily swimming around and look very nice, thanks /an/

OMG OVERREACTION! Actually Goldfish need about 2 gallons per inch as opposed to tropical which go about 1 gallon per inch of fish.

You obviously need to plan ahead, fish grow, and there is no point in putting 3 inch long fish in there only to have them eventually top out at 8 inches a piece. Do some research.
>> Zanthia
Lol goldfish grow up to 30cm in size, and it is a schooling fish and needs a minimum of 500 litre aquarium for a pack. I agree with>>172612

Do some research

no.

"Goldfish don't live very long in a Bowl.
1. Not enough air surface in a bowl.
2. No filtration in a bowl.
3. They grow very fast and goldfish need at least 10 gals of water per fish.(goldfish grow to 6")!
4. Goldfish also need light.

Tank
1. You need a good filter.
2. You to have at least 10 to 20 gals of water per fish you plan on keeping."

http://www.firsttankguide.net/goldfish.php
Keep your goldfish in a tank of at least 10 gallons, and make sure that a minimum of 8 gallons of your tank space is dedicated to each goldfish (a 10 gallon tank is really only suitable for one goldfish). This will provide sufficient space for your goldfish, so he can remain healthy, and this will allow the tank to help you keep healthy fish.

Listen to this man goldfish grow up to 30 cm in size. Remember those huge one-foot-long orange fish you saw in the aquarium at your cheap Chinese Buffet restaurant? These are fully grown goldfish! "Common" people don't know they reach that size because when they got one when they were children, it died after a few months due to the lack of space in their bowl. The external appearance (size) of a goldfish adapts to the size of its container, but not its internal organs. So as Goldie stays small in its 1/2 gal. bowl, it gets a round belly and it dies after a few months because his organs continued to grow while the rest of his body didn't. Also, goldfish produce a LOT of waste (they shit and pee a lot) therefore if you put them in a small bowl, you'd have to change the water everyday.

goldfish get about a foot in length, not 6". most places actually recommend 20 gallons per fish for adult goldfish
>> Anonymous
>>172761

depends on the kind of goldfish. fancy goldfish will get 12'' or so, but comet goldfish (typical feeders) can get 24''

wrong, google 'bruce the oranda'. they get fuckin huge. you can fit maybe 2 in a 55 gal

"Yeah go with a dwarf puffer, some anacharis, and some java fern. Maybe throw some small snails, ghost shrimp, and an otocinclus in there too."
and the puff will eat them. good, short term because it'll need the toof grinding, but long term, OP will need a separate tank to grow pond snails.

several male guppies would be good, with some ghost shrimp.

"OMG OVERREACTION! Actually Goldfish need about 2 gallons per inch as opposed to tropical which go about 1 gallon per inch of fish."

LxWxH motherfucker. gold. fish. get. fuckin. huge.

"get an angel fush"
in a 7 gallon tank? that isn't even a 7 gal tall? google, people. it is your friend

>Remember those huge one-foot-long orange fish you saw in the aquarium at your cheap Chinese Buffet restaurant?

Yes! I do! I believe you, but at my Chinese Buffet, the huge-ass goldfish was in a tiny little tank. Weird. All I can figure was that he grew up in a bigger tank and then they moved him to a small one?

No they are not, you retard. It's the koi they keep in chinese restaurants. While koi are also in the carp family and have similar patterns, they are not goldfish.

In reality, goldfish rarely achieve more than 5" even in a large pond, and even less with the fancy breeds. You're only supposed to feed them a little once every 3-4 days, and you only really need strong filters if you're overfeeding them (and fancy breeds can't swim against the current of the filter anyway). On top of that, if you keep the tank in a place like the bathroom where there's no heating, their metabolism will slow during winter.

If you get a goldfish and it grew more than half an inch in length that year, you're certainly doing it wrong.

>>173049

It's because they're not goldfish, they're koi. They're hardier than goldfish and can stand some cramping. They're also probably surreptiously cycled from an outdoor pond every once in a while.

Get a few zebra danio.

>>173052
you are a FUCKING idiot, you are basically telling them to starve their fish. of fucking course they won't grow if you feed them a little twice a week, how would you like it if i only fed you twice a week you dumb fuck. you obviously don't know shit about fish so GTFO

>>173055
depends on the place, around here a lot of the buffets have fantails and comets in their tanks that range from around 8" to a foot
