I've had plenty of cats and I'd say that if you want a female cat, let it have ONE litter of kittens, THEN have it desexed, and you'll find she becomes the softest ball of fluff you could imagine. Becoming a mother really does calm a female cat down a LOT.
As for male cats, just have it desexed and you'll have no problems. If you don't desex him however, he'll spray EVERYWHERE and that stuff will be strong enough to peel the paint from the walls. No joke.
That advice given, the female cat I have right now, Cleo, is incredibly sweet and was not given the chance to have a litter.
Sometimes it's just down to luck I guess.
