Dear /an/,

How much is the average Mud Puppy, and where does one acquire such a amphibian?

I was thinking of getting one for my niece for her birthday. She loves fish and lizards.

Please and thanks.

Pets as gifts are always a bad idea.
You don't know if she wants to take care of it, if she can afford the equipment, food and vet.
If she knows enough maintaining a tank etc.

Seriously, if you think for one second those puppies would stay away from mud, you've never owned a dog! Every dog I've owned LOVED mud.

A mud puppy is neither a fish nor a lizzard :)

Usually giving a living thing as a gift is a huge mistake, especially when it's a gift for a child. I don't doubt that your niece loves critters, but there's a huge differnce between liking them and wanting to take care of them for years to come. At the very least, ask her parents well in advance since they'll end up taking care of it.

the animal in OP's pic is not a mudpuppy.
It's an axolotl.
<- This is a mudpuppy

as for axolotl's, you can find them in most petstores where I live. I got my baby for 13 dollars, but some charge 30-40 for nice colours.

also, if your niece is pretty young, it wouldnt be the best idea. She'll have to cycle the tank, do water-tests, change the water daily or weekly depending on the tank.
