Do they make good pets?

I know birds can be.... vocal... but I've always wanted one..
Also, how smart are they? Could they find their way home if they got away somehow?
>> Anonymous
Cockatiels are my favorite pets, their personalities are very unique. I've had 3 so far and none of them are alike. Also their bites don't really hurt so much if you piss them off.
They're pretty dumb, theres no way one would come back home if they flew away afaik, but I always keep my bird's wings clipped anyway. They do remember some things though, and the males will sometimes repeat things like a parrot if you train them.

My parents have a cockatiel. How do I made the little fucker not nibble the furniture?

the are the least intelligent of the pet store talking birds and they're very mean.

Also they DON'T SHUT UP

my bird is pushing 22 now, he's cool. He's not loud (but he has his occasional noisy outbursts), since he's gotten older he's been more concerned with being around people, he likes to be hand fed and he likes to walk or be carried around. He broke his wing when he was young so he can't fly, which means we can leave his cage open so he can roam the house. And as soon as he's in his cage (he loves his cage) he is the meanest son of a bitch on earth. He's awesome! I love my bird to death.

I have two. One (Crash, on the bottom) is sitting quietly in his cage, and the other(Jojo, top) is running back and forth along the windowsill squeaking at his reflection.

Any minute now Jojo will get tired of his reflection and fly over here to tell me what a good Jojo he is.

give him something more interesting to nibble on. Jojo likes plastic lanyard, Crash likes balsa wood.

naw. budgies. And besides, pet store birds are rarely as friendly as breeder birds, which are hand tamed right from the start.

Jojo is a standard gray, with a little bit of pied mixed in, and he's normal sized and weighs about 95 grams.

Crash is a whitefaced gray mutation, and he's a bit smaller and weighs about 75 grams. Crash's mutation is sexually dimorphic- his sister from the same clutch is pure white.

I've had cockatiels, they're fucking stupid as hell. I prefer parrots. I had two pink and gray galahs, very smart birds.

You know their stupid when a frigging Budige(Budgerigar) is outsmarting it in pretty much every field

Nah, it's not outsmarting, cockatiels are considered to be the most gentle out of all the parrots, and lean more towards the "pussy faggots" of nature than "retarded dumbshits".

I have about 20 of them. Yep, I love them.

I have a similiar pair. Nice pic. I didn't know about the dimorphism with the white faced. That's interesting.
I've never had luck with parakeets. Cockatiels, you either get an asshole or a sweet heart.
Our white face, Babybird (don't ask) is a sweetheart. He'll 'attack' your hand if he doesn't like what you're doing, but he's never bitten. He'll happily sit on your shoulder and give kisses, whistle, and say pretty bird.
Now Tori is the anti-social prick. I think he was a breeder bird.
All in all, they're dumb for parrots. I've owned conures, finches, parakeets, macaws, parrotlets, and amazons...cockatiels are still my second fav, parrotlets coming in first.

I've had 2 before. They were pretty great. We had one fly off on us before and it was returned later that week. I never noticed it making too much noise.

Please stop bitching about how mean these birds are. They are only like that if you treat them bad or if they are not hand-fed.

Then again, budgies are one of the smarter kinds of parrot. Too bad the females are usually mostly interested in biting and chewing and destroying and so forth and the males just wanna chill. Neither are interested in humans... but if you can get them used to you, enough to give them treats (millet bars for instance) from your hand, then you'll likely have the beginning of a good working relationship there, feeding being a good way to get on an animal's good side.

But no, there's no way to have a bird stop chewing furniture. You can limit the damage by moving said furniture off somewhere out of the bird's reach. It's like cats needing to scratch to wear down their nails, and some kinds of rat always chewing because their teeth keep growing and so forth; a bird's beak likewise needs care.

Escaped pet birds will generally not find their way back home. (moreover even if they are recovered they'll usually have eaten something poisonous and die in a few days.)

What most people don't realize is that parrots have no social hierarchy. Sure there's the partner (<3 <3 <3) and so forth, but none of that alpha/beta ass-sniffing crap. It's a flock. They're basically anarchists. So any house wishing to have birds around will need to adapt quite a bit, possibly more than to a dog (who're usually subservient) or a cat (who'll think of you as their servants).

I had one, she would only bite and squeal if you nabbed her by the body. Or if you petted her "wrong." Except there was never any way to tell if you were petting her wrong or not. She would lean over and look at you to pet her head, and you would pet her for like, 30 minutes at a time, but if you went past the head or did some other random thing or tried to stop, she would bite you and then lean back over in the "pet me" position. It was a dangerous game, petting the bird.

My grandma had one, her name was Gracie. My dad found her in a tree at the beach and she just came down to him, and he brought her home to us. She was really sweet at first and then she started to bite my grandma, and she started to hiss whenever you would get close to her, and open her beak really wide and raise her crest really high. Then she broke her leg one day when my grandma was giving her a bath, because she just unexpectedly started flapping around and shit. She just got meaner from there and finally we gave her away. :(

My little jerks do that too. I think they just get bored of it after a while. I'm pretty much desensitized to their little nippy bites anyway, and they don't bite hard unless they're seriously feeling threatened.

Other Tiel owners - do your birds try to forage for food on your dinner plates? Jojo loves stealing chicken from mine.
