Soap is one of the oldest methods of controlling small insects. It is commonly used in gardening for this exact purpose too.
However, soap does nothing to flea eggs, and it also may not work if your pet has thick fur and the fleas are down against the skin.
Your best defense against fleas is cleanliness. Make sure you clean your home and areas where your pet sleeps and likes to play. Wash your pet's bedding frequently in HOT water. Vacuum frequently and make sure you properly dispose of the used bags from the vacuum. If you have a doghouse or a kitty bed, etc, those things need to be cleaned on a regular basis.
Products like advantage work quite well, but beware--there is a LOT of counterfeiting in the ped meds industry. If you tried it and it didn't work there is a good chance you got bogus meds. Make sure you have the proper dose and you buy it from a reputable place.
