2 cat questions

1. Is it normal for kittens to suck off each other?

2. Why do they always get REALLY excited when you pet the base of the tail?
they perk up really high and it just seems ..I dunno

1. When they're blind and deaf, they go by smell towards the teat, sometimes they get it wrong, I guess.
2. I suppose it is like scratching a dog behind the ear, they just like it. Maybe nature has made it pleasurable for cats to mark their scent by rubbing up to something, since scent-marking is so important. Plus, social contact is always nice anyway.

Oh, and what brought you to ask these questions? Do you have new kittens?
>> Anonymous
Yeah, 3 black kittens

I've always had cats around growing up, but just noticing the weird shit they do sometimes since I'm practically raising them (mother was taken away)

The sucking part is funny cuz they do it like a 69 position. I figured they were getting off, but their tummies were wet, but didn't figure they could get nutrients from each other

and the petting behind the tail is something I never got - just a really good spot for them. Not the same way as dogs since they seem more calm
These cats stretch out and look like their about to mark me as territory

Kittens and puppies sometimes suck urine from each other when they don't get enough liquid from their mother! You're in for a busy few weeks since kittens and puppies need bottle-feeding 5, 6, 8 times a day. Not to mention gently rubbing their genitals and anus with toilet paper or cotton wool to simulate cleaning from their mother. This allows them to "go potty" and is quite important.

The second one is becasue that's where mommy licks them so they can poo.

<<;; No, really.

Watch the mom, she'll lick them on the base of the tail, and they go to the bathroom

I'm also rasing an orphaned kitten right now, and have many times. There as some rules to this if you want the kitten to survive and grow up normal

Rule #1: Use KMR (kitten milk replacer), with a kitten bottle, until the kitten are about 6 weeks of age. No solid foods early! Refridgerate the KMR

Rule #2: There is a 99% chance all 3 kittens have worms. Take them to the vet and get them dewormed

Rule #3: The kitten will develope some sort of health problem along the way, probably diarrhea. Take them to the vet when this happens and get anti diarrhea meds. But just stop the diarrhea, do not clog up the kitten. It needs to poo at least once a day or it risks serious problem (ie death)

Rule #3: Feed the kittens every 6 hours, or every 4 if they are REALLY young (2 weeks or younger). FYI, Once you see the kittens teeth start the break through the gums, they are 4 weeks old. Do not keep re-heating already mixed up milk, as it kills the vitamins. Re-heat maybe twice at most.

Rule #4: De-flea the kittens, but use dawn and repeated washing and THOROUGH dryings. There is NO anti-flea drops, medications, or soap that are safe for kittens younger than maybe 8 weeks at the youngest.

Rule #5. Burp the kittens gently after feeding. Then, you must stimulate them to potty after every meal. Gently rub a warm washcloth of paper towel on the kittens busniess and it should pee. Keep rubbing until its done. Then, get it to poop by repeating this process on its butt. (Mother cats do this with their tongues, so consider yourself lucky)

Oh, and the kittens suck on eachother looking for a nipple, no big deal, you can't prevent it. (If you raise kitten alone they turn pycho), and there is a scent gland at the base of the tail that gets the cats good smell on you when you pet it there. And it probably feels like a good back scratch does to us.

email me if you have questions about raising the kittens, its a constant battle.

General confirmation of the other posts in this thread:

Your kittens need more fluids and for you to help them go potty.

Kitten formula can be had from Pet Smart, or even most grocery stores. In a pinch use watered down, lukewarm chicken broth.

Cow milk is not a good idea. Kittens will fill up on it, get no nutrients out of it, and then get diarrhea.

Use a slightly damp cloth to stimulate the base of your kittens' tail to help them go potty if they're not doing it by themselves. Try to make sure you do this while they're in the litter box to help train them.

If they are already pottying by themselves, you're okay. Many cats just react that way their entire lives.

If they start getting diarrhea, give them a teaspoon of pepto bismol once every six hours. Yeah, it's hard to get pepto into a cat, but it's better than having them die of dehydration. In the mean-time you get to enjoy having pink kittens from all the spill.

I heard pepto bismal kills cats...
>> Anonymous
NO pepto, it contains asprin which can kill cats. And in a little kitten, it would be dead or in serious trouble in no time.
>> Anonymous
They suck each other off because it feels like a nipple to them and they are still nursing. There is nothing sexual about it. Go get some kitten formula and a bottle.

cats like the base of their tail scratched because they can't reach that spot to scratch or bite. that's one of the reasons.
