Okie Question I have a turtle hes still a baby about quarter size. I have him in a small plastic tank full of water with a raft. I had him in a bigger one with a island of rock but he never got on the rocks. He stayed in the water so I put him in the smaller one he has a raft to sit on but hes still in the water while on it... What I really want to know is if its normal for his water to get dirty so fast ill clean his water and the next day its dirty and smelly. I was wondering if I should get him a tank with a filter or what... I am going to get him a 10 gallon tank soon but should I get a filter and what kind of stuff should I put in there with him...
Oh and I know im going to get people telling me how cruel I am for having him in a small tank and whatever else... Keep that to yourself and give me suggestions that are helpful please.

Sorry for the fuzzy pic

You are cruel for having him in a small tank and also you suck at sports.

Yes I do suck at sports... but thats not helpful with my turtle...

You are cruel for having him in such a small tank. Get him a grave, he'll be dead soon.

Well I can tell im not going to get help here...

Let's see if you guys can be bigger asses about this? Wait, no. Don't.

They're right in that you need a bigger tank. Yes you should filter his water. You need to get him an amphibious domain (I suggest 20+ gallon tank), with enough water for him to hide in as well as rocks and vegetation (shale is a great rock for turtles).

Prepare to invest in a heat lamp, get ready to chop up veggies and tidbits of meat and also, get ready to buy half the shit over again. Baby turtles grow quickly, and within a few months he'll need a 40+ gallon tank.

Easiest solution is to keep him til he's about the size of your fist, then release him into your back yard. Turtles do not thrive in captivity, and besides...they're kinda boring. ;}

That said, he's very cute and I understand entirely your desire to keep him. Baby turtles kill me with their cuteness.

Yes I know I need a bigger tank but thanks for your niceness unlike other people XD XP
But ya I won him at a carnival lol
Well im gunna get him his stuff soon I don't no what im gunna do with him when he grows up lol

I suggest getting a 20-40 gallon LONG aquarium. Build up about a 1/4 of it to be a land enviroment and leave the rest of it water since it seems he likes to swim so much. The previous poster was correct in that shale rock is good for them. You can do a half gravel half shale rock land mass. You might even want to see about getting some live plants for him to munch on. (ask a pet store specialist)

Turtles are dirty little shits so you'll definately need good filtration. I suggest getting a regular filter AND an underground one. Yes, they get that dirty that fast. There are also various kinds of drops you can put in the water that will help too. I've seen some formulated especially for turtle tanks.

If you feed them lettuce feed them romain. It has vitamins and nutrients in it unlike iceberg which is primarily water. Turtle pellets are great too.

Good luck!

Thanks for your backup, Anonymous. :}

I used to have 13 turtles in my back yard, once when I was a child. They're boring and weird. A turtle penis was the first animal penis I saw.

I though it was his guts. I was like "zomfghcraptouthsigutsohnoes!1!"

Then it clicked. Then I got sick to my stomach. XD

No problem! ^^
I forgot to mention to make a gradual incline up to the land part of the tank so he can walk right up to it. Turtles aren't so good at climbing up rocks..lol

So that's how I made turtle soup!

I don't know about turtles in special, but reptiles usually need lots of calcium or they will have problems with bone growth.

Turtles are really huge shitters, often change water.

lol I change his water ever other day he poops to much!

ugh, yeah turtles shit in water. I have a rescued box turtle (found it in the road with a broken shell, surprisingly enough it lived but is partially paralyzed so I couldn't set it free) and even though it's not a water turtle it crawls into the waterbowl to shit.

He's going to need access to full-spectrum fluorescent light or, preferably, natural sunlight and somewhere where he can pull himself out of the water to sun. Otherwise his ability to metabolize will be affected, his growth will be stunted, and he'll waste away.

I hope one day we can meet in public so I can shake your hand. I nearly pee'd my pants from laughing so hard. I need to go to bed.

Did you make a thread about that? I think I remember something similar. Also, tank size aside, that raft is awesome.

So I found a small palm-sized turtle at a Chinese Food Store. They had put him in the side of the tank where they ususally stuff with the carbon and filters. I bought it because I didn't want anyone to eat him. I asked the owner what they eat and he says "Son, they eat dried shrimp, scallops, and shark fin."

I found out that he wasn't the actual owner. The brother of the boss accidently sold me their pet turtle. Little guy gets fed roast pork.

Go to Wal-mart and buy a kiddie pool. It's like 10 bucks and you can spruce and line the damn thing up.

They say if you kiss your pet turtle 100 times you'll get good luck! Lick it 1000 times and get wonderful luck. Seriously.

Salmonella...was it?

You aren't using tap water, are you?

Unless you have really hard or otherwise undrinkable water tap water is typically fine for turtles. It's amphibians and fish that require filtered or spring water due to their extreme sensitivity.

OP is a dumbass for getting an animal without knowing how to take care of it first.
