so /b/, this is the story. last year in september i bought two gerbils. black one was called badger, brown/white one called bodger. anyways, they were lovely to have as pets, never bit me or anything, untill one day when i was cleaning their cage out, and i gavve them both a bath. then i noticed something, bodger's left hind foot, wasnt there :| just leg covered in soem fur, then bone sticking out. she seemed fine though, so i thought she must have caught it on soemthign and broken it. so i cleane dthem up and put them back in their cage, with some new food and water, next day, i checked up on them, she was now left with just one front foot. covering in the corner and badger was gnawing on something over the other side of the cage.

bodger and badger were sisters. badger was a canible. bodger was a pussy. they both got relesed into the wild.

end of story.

any one else got any freaky pet stories?

My little brother had bought a hamster at a pet store some years back at discount price because it was crazy, well we took it home, it bit as expected but what we didnt know it was pregnant. so one morning we woke up to wee little hamsters to later find in the after noon she had eaten all of them after violently killing them by bashing them in to the side of the cage. etc.etc she also got set free. THEN there was another time by brother had a nice hamster which the cat ended up killing, we burried it in the back yard, a few months later me and a friend got bored, dug it up ( it was in a plastic bag so it didnt compose properly) and then proceeded to show my little brother after throughing it in a tree....I'm surprised he still talks to me.

yeah, why does he talk to you lol

That's not that uncommon. A lot of gerbils (even littermates that have always been together) fight. It's called de-clanning. Once blood has been drawn, one of them will end up killing the other.

Pro tip: this is /an/, not /b/

Nasty.

What the fuck? You released an animal with barely any legs into the wild?

I brought home three gerbils when I was like, 9 who came from the same family. It was the dad who was the biggest, then the mom and then there was a cute little baby gerbil.

One day I went to go check on them and the baby and dad were eating the mother's head. I don't remember what my reaction was but it was probably something along the lines of "what the fuck there goes my five bucks" and then the next day the baby got sick and died.

The dad gerbil, Mr. Gerbil, lived for about six years.

WTF? You gave them a bath? Released them into the wild? Worst gerbil owner EVAR.

My cousin had geribls. Similar thing happened--one ate the other.

She thought it was a freak occurence. I guess not :/

yeah, sorry to hear it, but the black hamsters are loner hamsters and are violent to others in their cages.

Sadly, rodents are rather cannibalistic >_>
I have a gerbil myself.
She was born a runt so what happend to her makes sense.
Basically, her legs were chewed off to the knee (on every leg) and her tail was chewed off by her mother...
Her name is stumpy and she runs around on nubs.
She's perfectly fine and happy and is wicked fast XD
But anon...you're an idiot -_-; you don't release them into the wild. If anything, take the black one to the pet store or only release that one
The kind thing to do would be to keep the one that has been chewed on....

I've never liked gerbils, but now I downright hate them. My friend had one. It chewed it's own leg off.

Error! Not all rodents are cannibals! It is almost always gerbils and hamsters. VERY rarely do rats or mice eat eachother/themselves.

The cannibalism comes when you keep solitary rodents in a group. Rats and mice like company. Gerbils and hamsters do not.

It's also okay to wash your rodents, as long as you don't use unsafe shampoo/soap. Puppy/Kitten/Baby shampoo is fine.

And never fucking release the pet outside, I mean seriously, what is wrong with the OP? Kill yourself.

Do you live in the Gobi desert? Otherwise don't put your gerbs outsides, christ. No wonder gerbils are illegal pets in California, numbnuts put them out, and its like the rabbits in Australia that don't belong there, fuck

Not quite true. Gerbils are social animals, although they are very territorial and violent where space is limited, and don't get on with gerbils not in their litter. It's always recommended to keep two gerbils together, if you check it out. There's a very special way of introducing them to one another.

Also, mice do occasionally eat eachother, as my friend's mice do, but it's usually the babies they eat. Hamsters of the same gender (except dwarf hamsters) will generally kill eachother also.

My brother used to have two male gerbils - they were brothers, and got on well (though they did have the whole anal rape thing going on). When the first one died the other actually started pining for him - its possible that they only got on well as some form of 'unite against a common enemy' thing though, since one of our dogs was -obsessed- with staring at them in their tank. She used to stand up meercat-style for 10-20minutes at a time, just watching them.

I had the same thing happen. They weren't brothers or anything, but my two gerbils, both male (they looked a lot like yours actually, it's almost scary!) and they were best friends. They'd squeek if I picked one of them up, afraid to be left alone or something.

One day I found the brown one being all gnawed up at the joints (no missing limbs though) and he died of shock. The only one who could've done this was the black one, of course, but he lived for another year on his own.

those of you who know a bit of gerbils know that this is quite uncommon but he did die of old age and not loneliness. =/

I had two gerbils, female and male, whom I called Efreeti and Shiva (In before wee-a-boo). The female one day got 4 babies, looked like tiny pink pigs. Anyways, I had no experience about gerbil babies, whenever I should seperate them or not, so I just let them be with their parents. The next day they where all gone, the mother and father fucking ate them all. And then one week later they both died. I'm never geting gerbiles again.

It's probably somewhere in Africa and a giraffe happened to be killed by lions on a slightly busy road?

our queen ate her new-born kittens. I entered the room just as she was devouring the last, it's little head peeking out her mouth.

Half of our half-grown litter of hamsters escaped, and the dog found three before I did. She'd crunch the fuck out of them before just leaving them dead and mashed on the carpet. Kinda sounded like squishy burrito with crispy fritos inside.

I've had parent rodents eat their babies a lot.

I had mice once that had some sort of inner ear infection or mites or whatever so they started scratching so much the hair would come off. I gave the rest to a vet lady with a snake, but the pair I gave to my friend never had that option, and they proceeded to tear their own faces off.

A quail I had stuck its head up through the bars of the ceiling of her cage at some point through the night and was discovered the next morning, still hanging (dead now), blood flung all over where she beat her wings desperately to release herself.

Seems like it was taken in the Kruger National Park in South Africa. I recognize the number plates on the cars as those of Gauteng, my home province.

My bird tries to regurgitate feed me.

When he's sitting on my shoulder or somewhere nearby he'll hack up something and then come closer to me with the intention of dropping what he hacked up on me.

I had three male rats that I kept in a large cage.

Long story short, I was away for three days and left them with my parents, in the large cage.

When I got back, two of them had ganged up on the third and eaten their way inside it through, well, natural openings.

-_-; Rats can too be cannibalistic little freaks.

At one point in time I had two dwarf hamsters that were brother and sister, though I may have not known this at first, or not cared. Anyways, eventually the female had babies because I kept them in the same cage. Once she had the babies (at least half albino, too), I seperated the two because that's what everyone said to do. Not long after the babies were born, the mother killed all her babies by eating the brains, and just the brains. Cleaned out the corpses and put the brother back in, and the same thing happened; more babies (with albinos), seperated the parents, mom went brain-eating zombie on her kids.

Managed to get her to not eat brains the third time by keeping the father/brother in the same cage. All the babies survived this time, but we ended up getting rid of the whole family except for two non-albino offspring that were both female so they couldn't enact a cycle of giving birth to babies and then feasting on the brains of those babies.
