I have wanted a dog for quite a while. Is it ok to just get a mutt? If not what breed does /an/ recommend? Any advice on training or general care?

Thanks a lot!

Also, any good arguments I can give to my mom to make her realize "My sun is gettin sum dogz" I can't use the whole "I'll pay for him myself" since I'm not allowed to work anymore.

Mutts are amazing. With purebreeds, you tend to get a lot more behavioral and health problems since there is very little dna variation. Mutts, on the other hand, tend to stay healthier, are smarter, and are friendlier.

Should I get a puppy or a sad little doggy from the humane society? BTW I am in college and my mom made me drop my job to focus on the more important things....like sex and drugs.

Wait, what? Your mom made you stop working and you're over 18?

What can she do to you? Send you to your room?

Solution: Get a part time job and look for students sharing a house and looking for room mates. Make sure you're allowed to keep pets and you'll have a back yard and everything. It might even be cheaper than getting a shitty apartment by the school.

Parents are rich. Nuff said.

Is training a dog hard?

Get a dog from the pound they are usualy already house trained and will love you to death for rescuing them.

Golden Retrievers are the best, but I would say that an adoption from the SPCA works just as well and it's cheaper.

Good news, I am allowed to get a dog in August.

Should I get a female or a male?
This is my first pet and I'm nervous :P

I've always been a big fan of German Shepherds myself, they have real bad problems with their hips though. Maybe a shepherd mix? Or a lab mix, labs are good dogs. I like Weimaraners too, they're really pretty and really smart.

Males tend to be more happy go lucky than females but either is fine. Just make sure to get it fixed.

I was always under the impression that dogs wind up in the pound because their original owners either didn't try to train them and then blame the dog for the result, or because they thought training was too much work.

A shelter will tell you if the dog is house trained, but that's certainly not the only important training. Read up on behavioral training or look around in your area for a class you can take with your dog to learn how to train it. Better to be prepared.

You can usually find a housebroken dog with little problem if you don't mind a slightly older dog. Plus, most ASPCA shelters have training classes - Try to find one with classes and go to it with your dog after you adopt him or her. It will be a great experience for both of you. Good luck!
