The reason behind the naming of the guinea pig will remain unsolved for thousands of years to come ...

BTW, <3 Guinea Pigs, they would be a perfect pet if they didnt shed 24/7 and have a knack to chew on anything they can get their teeth on =p

I can't tell if you are joking.

Their name tells you where it came from. The people of Guinea would raise these for their meat. Like what the Westerners would do with pigs. So, the first Westerners called them Guinea Pigs.

Bullshit. Guinea is in AFRICA. Guinea pigs are from South AMERICA.

many people believe that it is a corruption of the name of the country of Guyana or French Guyana, also the region of northeastern south america.

The Dutch name for the guinea pig also indicates the country of guinea, but most other languages do not.

as for the "pig", well.. it's fat and squeals.

52801 here again,
two other theories.. i don't believe that it was because you could buy one for a "guinea", a unit of currency from england..

i do find this to be believeable:
the name comes from "coney pig" or "pig coney", because their size and shape was similar to a rabbit but more pig-like (rabbit == coney)
coney.. guinea.. ?
