today my 12 year old pug got the piss beaten out of her by another dog. she was bitten really bad on the stomach and on the back leg. she's been to the vet and she got stitches and a drain put in the wound.

she is in a lot of pain. the vet says they gave her pain medication but i don't think it's really working. she is shivering and where the wound is located it looks like it's impossible for her to comfortably lay down and sleep.

my other dog was prescribed acepromazine (some kind of doggy sedative) because she flips the fuck out whenever she goes to the vet. would it be okay if i gave my pug like a quarter of the pill just so she can sleep? i feel awful for her.

pic not related.

I would STRONGLY recommend against mixing medications unless you've been told it's OK by someone who knows what they are doing. Try calling your vet and seeing what they say.

If she's shivering I would say make her warmer (heating blanket?). It might be plenty warm for her normally but she's been seriously injured and bodies do weird things when they get injured badly.

Make sure you keep the wounds and drain clean and change any bandages as often as you are supposed to.

Oh, and also about the acepromazine: if your other dog is a different size and/or different metabolism the dose could be way off and since we're talking about a pug it would probably be off by being too large as opposed to too small.

if she's shivering from loss of blood, it's the body's way to closing up the vessels so she won't lose any more internally while she heals. Warming her up is the last thing you should do.
