I just got a mantis /an/, what should I feed it?

Fruit flies. Or ants.

Baby mantises work, too.

Depending on its size, and it looks to be what an inch or so long? Give it pinhead crickets, or other similarly sized bugs. DON"T TRY ANTS.

OP here, just gave it moths and spiders.

OP here, I have it in a glass vase. What should I put in it to imitate the environment? And should I put it in another container instead?

Crickets, mealworms, waxworms.

If you're catching your own food and know for certain they're not contaminated with pesticides they'll eat pretty much anything edible, but I wouldn't bother with beetles (especially ladybugs), ants (almost all chitin and high in formic acid) or adult moths/butterflies (the wings are inedible and some are toxic).

i had one once. She was super smart and pregnant. I fed her anything i could catch. namley grasshoppers.

She seemed to enjoy killed as she would often catch the grasshoppers, bite the back of the neck and let them go to watch them flop around for a few seconds. She only ate half of what she killed.

Mantids eat like everything that moves.

The only wrong thing to do is giving it prey that's too heavy to hold or harmful.

Forgot my pic.
You can also feed animals that died recently, if they haven't started to rot. Just hold it front of your mantis and waggle until he/she grabs it.

<----Eating an atlas moth that just passed away, I didn't want to waste such a big amount of food.

I'd try something different, it could fly out of the vase. Make sure whatever container you put it in has lots of ventilation. Put some branches in for the little guy the climb. Mist the sides of the cage lightly so he can get a drink, otherwise keep it dry.
