THIS is what probably sounds like a terrible owner: I've NEVER taken my cats to vets when something like that happens. Cats are really really good at keeping their wounds clean and they usually heal nicely. I did make a hydrogen peroxide/water mix in a spray bottle (to get it past the dense fur) for a huge swollen infected knot on my cat's tail. It went down and he's fine now.
Two of my cats have come home on different occasions with a flap of skin torn off, and they also healed completely and are undetectable. Except I think I did put neosporin on one once a day..
I only take them to the vet if they get really ill somehow - meaning they don't move for a couple days, refuse food/water, etc.
