I haven't been to pet smart or pet safari in a while and im thinking about getting a lizard, I'm wondering if either of these stores consistently carry crested geckos? Or are they more uncommon in stores, and are they like 120 dollars? or is it more around 50

I'm not either of these guys, but the quality of the pets in big chain pet stores will vary greatly from location to location.

Some places do take good care of their animals. It comes down to 1) who works there and 2) where they get their animals from. There is a Petco and a Petsmart across the street from each other here - the Petco sucks shit and has lazy, apathetic employees. The Petsmart is relatively new, the employees are helpful, and the animals look like they're in good condition. Pretty easy assessment to make.

If you, OP, don't feel like you can walk into a pet store and make that kind of judgement, then you are probably better off ordering them right off the bat.

Yeah, I've also noticed tha Petco tends to suck harder and Petsmart is a lot nicer in general, actually.

But you still can't beat private pet shops.

OP here, i know of a good local pet store we go to a lot that takes good care of their animals, ill check them out and see what they have

Funny, it's the opposite here. Our Petco takes wonderful care of their animals while Petsmart has animals on the verge of death.

In fact, I refuse to buy anything from Petsmart. To me, they care more about their company than the animals they're supposed to help. Petco has proved to be more caring about their animals than sales.

Thats here, though. Probably different with each state.

Actually, the private pet shop here is pretty nasty and overcrowded.

Bottom line: Depends on what's available in your area.

First poster after OP.

as for chain stores, the care provided in most of these stores are way sub par, and most of the employees are half wit animal lovers that either own gold fish and don't know jack shit, or just don't have the means to properly care for animals.

petsmart allthough a somewhat better store, i still would avoid buying ANY animal from them, only supplies.

also www.chameleonforums.com i know its a chameleon forum but im sure someone there could help you out on info about crested geckos seeing as several of them breed the species of lizard.

i don't support chain stores at all id rather pay a bit more at the mom and pop pet shot that has educated employees *but this doesn't always follow true* a good petstore will have signs that say "we reserve the right to not sell animals" they should make sure you understand what your getting into, they should make sure you have the appropriate tank prior to purchase.

I worked at a Petsmart and denied sales to people on several occasions.. that's not just limited to locally owned joints.

Be sure to wash your hands after handling it, or you might get a disease.

don't get me wrong, i just hate any support to chain petstores.

they shouldn't sell anything but supplies and food.

maybe fish at the most..freash water only but even that is easy for them to fuck up.

OP, just check out lllreptile.com they will be a safe bet for ya, also i would recommend a bearded dragon over a crested gecko

the pet shop around here has animals in nasty over crowded tanks...especially the puppies...I always have to fight tears when I see an overgrown Lab puppy in a teeny kennel.

However, the Petsmart here is very clean, the animals aren't crowded and they all look healthy.

I got mine at Petco about 2 years ago, and she's never had any problems. Generally I wouldn't recommend going somewhere like that, but I must say the reptiles at the Petco near me seem well cared for. She was about $50.
