/an/! Help!

I have never been able to have a pet before, but I am planning to adopt a kitten in the next few months (my summer pay is significantly higher than later this year).

When searching online for shelters, I decided to ask some friends where they got their cats. Turns out one in particular had some kittens that needed a good home. At first I was ecstatic, but now I am really scared and need some info:

How much (approx) is spay/neuter, shot and such going to cost for one new kitten...the initial stuff (I am aware that pets require medical upkeep...etc). Also, should I keep a very young kitten in a cage or box? I plan on keeping my room closed (as there are 2 older cats and a Sheltie here, who are all sweet, but I don't want to take any chances while its really little)

Anyways...any advice for a first-time kitten-owner would be great...

I'm nervous, but SO happy!

Hey that's my cat on kitten level.

Anyway, friends of animals has a program where you buy a certificate for fixing cats. Female is 65 male is 50

http://www.friendsofanimals.org/programs/spay-neuter/index.html

DO NOT cage or box a kitten lol.

Well, as you haven't even said which country you live in, it's impossible to say. Fees vary from vet to vet anyway. You'd be far better off phoning a couple of vets and getting their prices.
On the whole though, cats are cheaper to own than dogs, both in food and vet bills.

Seriously all you need is some basic tools and a little bit common sense, neutering a cat is not brain surgery. Although spaying is slightly harder to do.
>> Anonymous
The real question is why would you not do it yourself.

Its cheaper, no need to spend money on an expensive vet.
It means your pet does not need to stay a while in an unfamiliar environment, so its less stressful for the pet.
Saves you time no need to go there in the first place no need for repeat trips to remove stitches.

Hmmm...I guess you're right...the question is, how do it put it under? Or should I just tie it to the table and shove a sock in its mouth...

BUT, if I decide to get the female cat, is it OK to not get it fixed? Or is that a bad idea?

Well, you'd probably be even more ecstatic when it shat out 12 or 13 little bundles of joy, right?
>> Anonymous
>>84626

I have no intentions of LETTING it outside (I suppose it is stupid to think that it never will...) and there are no males in the house...

I guess I'd just give it a kitty abortion...(using same tools above).

I dont know about cats but my dog goes in heat every 6 or 7 months and has a period so we have to put her in diapers or she gets blood wherever she sits.

Yes... they do sell doggy diapers.

Don't neuter it yourself.

Also, letting the kitty acclimate to the other animals at first is a good idea. Eventually it has to learn to deal with them though, so try to keep increasing the time spent with the animals. If they look like they're going to hurt him, back off until he gets bigger. But don't keep it in a box/cage (though a box on its side + blankets = cheap bed for kitty.)

Just be gentle with it at first, make sure to kitten proof your room (don't leave anything toxic out that it could get into, that sort of thing,) give it some healthy food, clean water, a nice litterbox, and attention.
>> Anonymous
you can get a good price on spay or neutering by getting price quotes from around town, and most will be glad to match or beat the lowest quote.

doing it yourself sounds awful. maybe you could bring in the whole litter with your friend for an additional discount.

Ok heres a quick little guide/howto on how to neuter your cat. Vets perform these all the time its a really simple procedure.
>> Anonymous
>>84632
this is good advice.
when you start to open the door, put a window screen between them so they can sniff each other, etc. i got this from a basic cat care website... here is one for starters. I'd suggest spending a month reading up on everything so you can make the best choices possible. http://www.fanciers.com/cat-faqs/general-care.shtml

you know, if you botch the neutering and you have to take it to the vet for complications, you could probably get in some big legal trouble.

Ok heres a quick little guide/howto on how to neuter your cat. Vets perform these all the time its a really simple procedure.

You dont want to get any blood on yourself since that stuff is kinda gross so you will need some gloves for this. You want a nice flat work surface area places that are wipeable clean are good like a kitchen table also a nice comfortable height for you to work at.

You dont want this to be cruel so you will need some anesthesia. Chloroform or ether are good choices but they can be hard to get. So a nice cheap alternative I recommend is to soak a rag in gasoline and hold it over your pets face. Once it passes out flip it over for easy access to the parts you need to get too.

All you have to do now is make a incision along the scrotum on the red line(see pic) with what ever sharp object you have.

You should now be able to see the testicles. Now, with your melon scraper or any spoon type object really, slowly dig underneath the testicles and then scoop them out. You may encounter lots of tubes and blood vessels connecting to the testes, but they won't be needed now that your pet has no testes.

Now all you have to do is sew backup the scrotum. Dont worry though if you are not good at sewing there is an easier method. You can just pull the flaps of the incision together and put some Duct tape over it, this has the added benefit that you dont have to stick the stitches out later all you need to do is pull the tape off after about a week.

Enjoy saving the money and have fun learning a new skill :)

>Now, with your melon scraper or any spoon type object really, slowly dig underneath the testicles and then scoop them out.

>ou can just pull the flaps of the incision together and put some Duct tape over it,

Yeah, how about "NO". Moving back into the real world now. Just take it to the vet. $50-100 isn't much compared to, you know, accidently killing your pet and then duct taping the wound shut.

as for>>84641gb2/whatever backasswards little village you came from and don't encourage people to do potentially lethal things to their animals. Like cutting them open and removing stuff with no previous knowledge of what they are doing.
>> Anonymous
Seriously, unless you have at least a nursing degree or a vet's degree, I would not do any surgery on your cat. Infection, mistakes, inexperience, blood loss, insufficient or overpowering anesthesia....so much can go wrong. Yes a vet is expensive, but you’re paying for professional knowledge.
>> Anonymous
>>84641

People with more money than sense. This is not potentially lethal its a really simple thing to do, take a person less than 10 minutes of there time. You tools that i would guess most people allready just have laying around.

>>84643

Some reasonable concerns that can easily be addressed.

Infection: Just swab everything down first with rubbing alcohol if you have it, if not again just think improvise everclear strong vodka all would do the same job. This is not precision engineering you can swap things around and still get the same effect.

insufficient anesthesia is easy to notice, eg your pet is still moving. You just stop the anesthesia when it stops moving really easy to do. If you were really worried about using anesthesia on you own pet. You could restrain it down then use an ice pack on the area to numb it down, this is more just a local anesthesia though your pet may still feel something. The ice pack does have a bonus on reducing the blood flow to the area making it less messy when you cut in there so thats something you may want to do anyway even if you use a full anesthesia.

Blood loss is not something you need to worry about. You just need to not stand about doing nothing, get in there get the balls and get back out. Again the icepack would reduce the amount of blood if you are worried. Also pour some of your disinfectant over the wound at the end to sterilize it.

If there is quit a lot of blood coming out making it hard to stitch/tape up the wound you can use an old trick medics have been using since the Vietnam war and thats just some spray on adhesive(Superglue) to help seal the wound up before using one of the othe methods. Spray adhesive from a spray can is best ( covers the area better and faster) but in a pinch you could just use tube glue. Either way you want the fast drying kind.

Hope to have helped :). If anyone has any other questions, needs advice on certain parts of the procedure just ask.

seriously.

If you can't afford $50 to fix your kitty, how are you going to afford toys, food, vet bills later (when you know, the cat needs meds or surgery) etc etc.

Also how is this pet your "first" ("I have never been able ot have a pet before") when you have 2 other cats and a sheltie?

Just curious.

Contact your city and vets to inquire about locations that offer FREE spaying and neutering services. That's right, FREE you cheap son of a bitch. With the huge issue of pet overpopulation, these services are growing everywhere.

Ignore the troll trying to get you to operate on your own cat. You will not only traumatize yourself, but either (a) watch your cat slowly die in front of you or (b) pay more money to fix your cat properly while explaining to the vet what you did.

The vet has every right to report your DUMB ASS if you did try it, and file it under animal cruelty. Animal cruelty charges, which sure as hell would go through trying to operate on your own animal, WILL result in at least multiple fines on your ass. 50 bucks would be ideal after all the shit you'll go through either emotionally and/or financially.

>>84684

Oh you're not? Your stupidity caused me to think you one and the same. My apologies jackass. Why the hell do you care if some owners of their pets actually care about them? Link me to a post that exemplifies or even supports your argument of the posters here being over-protective of their pets. Straw man arguments over made up scenarios in your demented mind don't count.

Perhaps if you gave a shit about your pets, assuming you have any, you'd know minor symptoms could lead to greater issues down the line that would not only be inevitable in terms of addressing financially through the vet, but threatening of the animal's life. A change in patterns happens for a reason. Shitting outside the box happens for a reason.

But NOOO. Fuck, if someone paid like a grand on a dog or more on a special breed of cat they should neglect it to appease some poor fuck getting his panties in a twist over the net. It's not protecting an investment or being a rational human being taking care of the shit that belongs to him or her, it's being a petfag.

I can't be mad at you if you're this stupid :(.

Look lil buddy, I wasn't saying that you needed money to take care of a pet. I was saying that if a pet needed help, it was better to pay for it rather than ignore it or rationalize it away as being unnecessary or not your problem. That's what you do, and it's wrong because it prioritizes your needs over your pets. And that's what your parents talk about when they mention "responsibility."

Owning a pet is a big "responsibility." And some people take that seriously, and some don't. You're one that doesn't, but I believe in you! The signs like pooping outside the box means your pet is scared to poop because it hurts. If it hurts something's wrong inside your buddy that will most definitely hurt or kill over time. That's bad :(. But that's what "responsbility" is all about: taking care of it when things go bad, and making sure they don't get worse.

That's all big guy. Didn't mean to ruffle your feathers now. Did you understand? I can speak in simple english if you like :D

This is by far the dumbest thing I've ever heard, please don't listen to these people and try fixing your own pets. First off you don't know the anatomy of your pet and could do something wrong and make your pet sick, or worse. Does anyone know if putting an elastic band around the ballsack of the cat waiting a bit until they swell up then crushing them between like a couple of bricks works for cats?

I ask because my uncle used to do this to horses all the time on the farm and it worked fine. Would seem to be a lot easier and safer than surgery.
>> Anonymous
>>84837
I know self-neutering/spaying is done on farm animals often, but consider the size of those animals as compared to a housecat.

I think there's a reason who you don't hear about people spaying/neutering their own cats and dogs.
>> Anonymous
>>84837
Even if it did work, if you don't get your pet properly neutered by a vet then you won't have official records of your pet having been neutered and you'll have to pay taxes for it as if it's unneutered.

>>84618
As someone about to start studying for a vet, I regret to tell you that YOU ARE WRONG. =)

Vets can certainly do it in a less painful/healthier/less dangerous way at least. If anyone could do it they wouldn't be charging you money for that sort of thing.

Jesus Christ. At first, I was sure the at-home-neuter guy was a troll, but now I'm not so sure.

Worst. Idea. Ever. As someone that is certified to do surgery on small animals, I can tell you that A LOT can go wrong. Anesthesia and infection would be the two biggest worries, I think.

Why get a pet if you have no intention of caring for it properly? Honestly.

Update, went to see the available kittens...I fell in love with the all-black one.

He is 6 weeks old, already potty-trained, and will be completely weened by the time I get him. (Tuesday it looks like).

Owner of the mother gave me some paperwork from the Vet they go to: $95 for "kitten package" (Exam, FVRCPC, FeLV, Rabies, Fecal Test & Deworming) and about $150 for spay/neuter (will probably go elsewhere and use the voucher thing).

The guy gave me really detailed instructions for feeding...at least while it is still young.

I plan to keep him strictly in my room for a few weeks, then slowly introduce him to the other animals...then after a while he can roam the house like the rest.

Any name ideas?

Get the other cats used to its scent by keeping a shirt or a towel in its bed. After a few days put that towel near the other cats. Your new cats should eventually get used to the scent and curious about the cat by pawing underneath your door and stuff.

Still if it's little I'd leave it in your room when you're not around. It could get hurt, especially if the other cats are larger.

>>84968

You can probably get it spayed/neutered for much less at an animal shelter than a vet. Vets around here cost twice as much as what the humane society shelter charges.

We had 3 adult cats when I got my kitten, the first 2 months she spend on my bedroom, obviously had to make it kitten proof, breakable things on high places, and then mosquito netting to keep her from my bed. after the first few days I'd take her down for an afternoon, and the other cats would freak, but they calmed down after a while, exept for the male cat we have. He once attacked her, and not just play fighting, so heck she still sleeps on my bedroom at nights. male cats can react pretty harsh.

Yeah, the cats we have here are both female...and one is retarded. The dog is really relaxed, don't expect it to get too upset...just mostly confused.

Yeah any person who goes against group think majority is obviously a troll. God forbid people can actually have there own ideas and beliefs in life. I suppose though it is a culture of surroundings, people brought up in cities thinking milk and beef comes from a supermarket probably would be overly squeamish about doing something like this themself. Lack of life skills to have faith in themselves to be able to do it.

Who you trust more some Vet offering a cheap knock of service for twenty bucks, or yourself? I know who I trust more. I know at the end of it I know what has actually been done and how. I have an understanding of things rather than going ' wow magic ' saving 20$ is nice, but the self satisfaction of being able to do something is worth more than that, really you can't put a price on self respect.

Its just a shame we live in a cotton wool society where people can not take care of themselves, run, or should i say drive to the ER with the tiniest of scratches. People who need there pets to be sanctioned and registered by the nanny state'>>84902'.

I am much happier knowing that I can take care of my animals myself, after all is that now what having a pet is all about looking after and taking care of them yourself.
