ferrets really caught my attention as pets, tell me about them , anyone have one ?

I've never had one, but a friend of mine did. It was pretty cute and seemed like a smart animal. She'd leave it in her car while we went out and it would run around and play on the floor until we got back. Aren't they related to weasels, though? Be prepared for sneakiness and hijinks.

Dunno if you're still watching this or not but heres my experiences on them over the course of 4 ferret lifespans...

Cons
-They dont live long, 8 or so years.
-They're expensive 130 bucks or so were I live.
-Their hips go out its devastating... I had to put one down because of it. Their cry is heartbreaking.
-They overheat quickly - why they're illegal in a lot of states.
-I'm sure there is more but I cant think of them atm.

Pros
-They're like a kitten their whole life.
-Chatting as all hell... Small little grunty noises.
-Easily taken care of. Lots of protein (DO NOT FEED THEM PLAIN CAT FOOD) they're a carnivore that NEEDS a lot of protein. Kitty litter ftw... Put them in the corner of the cages and you've got it trained.
-I've yet to be bit by one... I don't know about around where you live but Marshals put a black dot on one of the ears and are handled from when they were first born and as such are very timid.

-Look up online for more info. They are a great pet for their lifespan but do not live long enough for my taste. I wont get another one... Their deaths are to depressing.

They do play. They're very social and playful animals, they grow very fond of their owner from what I've heard - quite like rats.

i have 3 now and they are Awesome, but they are A LOT of work! daily cage cleaning, weekly bedding change/cleaning, they need AT LEAST 4 hours a day out of cage time (that means u ON the floor playing w. them), they need yearly vet visits for shots and to maintain general health, they can get sick easily (mine get the flew oce a year). they commonly get diseases like insulinoma, Adrenal, lymphoma just to name a few .

they are the best animal and i love my guys SO much, but they are a lot of work and if you dont know what to expect, ur screwed!

pic is mu boy Gulliver and his Mass Cell Tumor :( its being treated slowly now until its ready to be removed (another common ailment)

Ferrets rock, but they are a lot of work. The trick is just developing a system to care for them early on, and really nail the routine into your head before you get used to having them. People compare ferrets to kittens, which is partially true, but if I had to describe them, I'd say it's like having a very stupid, very energetic kitten-toddler-thing that shits every 45 minutes and eats everything that it can.

1. Ferrets don't stink. Ferret shit on the other hand, is the devil. Cat litter boxes with one side trimmed down to an inch high are best, the little corner ones are just begging to get ignored or shoved around.

2. Although they will sleep between 14 and 18 hours a day, they have to be played with on a daily basis, that means letting them run loose to exercise. (This means ferret proofing your house, checking to make sure nothing on the floor or in jumping distance is edible, breakable, etc.)

3. No cat food. Buy ferret food that is 40% protein or more. Most cat foods are like, 30%. Give them a full bowl, they won't over-eat, and if they get fat, they need to be played with more. Give them toys and meat-treats like a chicken wing or a dead mouse to chew on periodically to supplement their diet.

Anyway, make sure you are really ready for one, because a lot of people get them, then go OH SHI- and hand them off to a shelter. Don't be that fuckbag.
