Hey /an/.

So my 19-year-old cat has been getting pretty frail lately. I've been away at school the past three or four months, and I come home to see that she has lost significant weight and does not move from the carpet around her food/water dish. She is not very strong, though she is still responsive and talkative to people. My mother refuses to take her to the vet on the grounds that she believes it's a waste of money given my cat's age. So, what's your experience with frail, aging cats, /an/? I've had my cat since I was 3 and it's very difficult to see her this way. She wasn't this bad during the summer (though she did have decreased energy, it seemed). It's just hard because she is dying while I'm not even around to be with her.

Also, OP posted before realzing the the fuckton of dead cat threads on /an/ today. Damn. Sorry folks. :(

your cat is 19 years old, op. death is a part of life. no one lives forever

My cat's 16 and I'm seeing the very start of this decline. :(

It does suck, but at least your cat's had a good, extremely long life. My friends think my cat's done well getting to 16, but 19? She must be very well taken care of.

Your cat is heading into overtime. 19 is an amazing age for a cat to reach.

Id think a vet would tell you to put her down then charge you 300 bucks to do so...

Just love her as much as you can while you can. There's really nothing you can do, it's just too bad you'll probably be away when she goes. The stress of you leaving again probably won't help much either.

My cat just died while I was away at school, it sucked that I wasn't able to be there with him, I hope you won't have to be in the same position.

Vet's can't really do much when a cat is that old, there's no point in taking her to one unless she is in a lot of pain and should be put down. Just be glad you have a little more time with her and she's had a long life.

My 17 year old cat just died this past June when I got back from school. It's hard, but there's really nothing to do. She didn't really move much towards the end either. It usually happens very quickly. Like they're just fine and then they just decide it's time to go. All you can do is make sure she's comfortable and happy (I'm assuming she is to be 19!).

My cat is 19, she's blind and deaf, skinny and lively as hell. She runs around everywhere and starts mini-fights with my much younger cats. She's sleeping right now. Oh. Wait. No, she just woke up.

It rocks to have a kick ass alive old cat. Sucks for you OP.

I feel like crap telling you this OP, but there's a possibility that your cat may be depressed, and that is draining away her will to live. Think about it: you have been a part of its family for all of its life, from early childhood and now you are suddenly gone for long periods of time. You call her your cat, so I assume you are the closest companion she has, especially considering your mother's attitude towards her. Obviously there is no easy solution to this problem. Even if you could take her with you, she might not be able to cope with the stress of moving at that advanced age.

It's possible this isn't the case, of course, especially if you have other cats (you didn't mention any), in which case old age is just getting to her. Cats age differently, some may live to be 25, but most die before they even reach 19. Unfortunate as that is, it's inevitable. I've heard of old, tired cats regaining some of their youthfulness when a new kitten is introduced to the family, but I really can't say if that's the right thing to do in your situation. Again, the stress could be too much. In any case, it's best that you try your best to learn how to cope with the fact that your cat is reaching the end of its (quite long) life no matter what. I'm sorry, but that is just how life goes.
