well you see this is a common.. well lets not call it a misconsumption, most people just don't consider it that far through. Head shots don't kill.
Let me explain, mammals will die from a gunshot wound only if it a) drains them off their blood, b) causes shock/the brain the die of it's own accord or c) extreme physical nerve damage to simulate shock etc.
instant kills, so to speak are almost impossible to do at range unless you can annihilate your targets heart and nerve center alltogether.
You can cause an almost instant, theorectically painless death however, by severing the spinal cord at the top of the neck, or destroying the part of the brain just above it that connects to the spinal cord.
in an animal that size you have to not only consider the recoil from the gun, but also the path of the bullet once it enters the target, a lower calliber bullet will throw the target around being so light and may not create a "straight" wound. Also, I don't know about bb guns, I'm not sure if they can 'tear' bone.
I would recommend just littering fox scent (fox piss) everywhere instead though, that should scare them away...
