What do you guys know about crabs?

My dorm will only allow pets that "can hold their breath under water for 24 hours". Seeing as I don't want to drown anything, and fish bore me, crabs seem like an awesome choice. The problem is, I'm really not experienced with aquariums, and don't want to go to all the trouble of running a salt water tank. All the local fish stores only carry salt water crabs.
Any ideas where I can get some? Any suggestions on something else to get?

Pic is fiddler crabs, because they look like awesome mutants. Apparently they come in a fresh water variety.

just get a dog with a snorkel on its collar. with that, technically it CAN survive 24 hours straight. harass them until they get their wording more precise than that.

>"can hold their breath under water for 24 hours"

I think the pressure difference being underwater at a low depth is negligible compared to holding in breath at surface pressure.
>> Anonymous
I don't think anything can hold it's breath 34 hours regardless of what it's holding it from.

...doh, how i miss that

Get hermit crabs

They're not aquatic and they suck.

Just get a betta, don't force a pet into your dorm. Fish tanks can get expensive and annoying quickly.
>> Anonymous
get ferrets and put a plastic container on top of the cage filled with water to prove to the dorm police that they're underwater
>> Anonymous
>>188876

But even fish doesn't technically hold its breath under water!

get a whale!

your dorm is run by idiots.

congratulations.

If you get fiddler crabs, then prepare to reinforce your aquarium like it was a high security prison. They are notorious at being able to escape from places.
>> Anonymous
>>188914

Haha. That would probably work
>> Anonymous
Just fuck a slutty sorority whore: instant crabs.

Also be prepared to listen to fiddlin' at all hours of the night. I suggest getting some banjo crabs to go along with them.
>> Anonymous
there are some freshwater crabs that can stay underwater, but they all try to escape, so expect them to spend some time around the top of the tank if you have any air filters/foliage they can climb and make sure the tank it properly sealed

just don't expect to get something like a hermit crab
>> Anonymous
Can certain turtles stay underwater for 24 hours?
>> Anonymous
>>189000

Probably not, but turtles wouldn't make good dorm pets, anyway.

OP, a ten or twenty gallon tank set up for a couple of crabs would be pretty cool. There are resources for setting up good crab tanks all over the internet. If you've got a Petsmart in your area, check there, as they don't usually carry anything saltwater. Petco might have them as well.

Get ants. Ants can hold their breath for 24 hours. Get lots and lots of ants.

In short: ants
>> Anonymous
actually id enjoy an ant farm
then when you get tired of them, just toss them in someones room and buy some more interesting ones, like army ants
>> Anonymous
Get pet lobsters instead.
>> That Gomez
>>189196
ant farms are fucking awesome. Antworks has some awesome setups. Highly reccommend
>> Anonymous
what college do you go to?
because any college that can get away with a "rule" like that is either awesome or retarded.
Just wondering.

New Challengar!!!

So why does a dorm need a rule where a pet needs to be able to breathe underwater for at least 24 hours? You live in New Orleans?
>> Bitter Anon !!WJLRQ1cwCyZ
>>189314
No, a NOLa dorm would require your pet to be able to survive in toxic sludge for a week. Which pretty much just leaves out anything but roaches and Cher.
>> Anonymous
Get an albino clawed frog. They're fucking creepy looking and don't really require a land surface to live on.

I don't know how you would get one, but a giant isopod would freak everyone out, and no one would come in your dorm.

I know I just moved to Baltimore, where crabs are apparently extremely popular.

They have crab-flavored potato chips here.

Lol they say reel seafood instead of real seafood... thos fools...
>> Anonymous
Yeah please don't get hermit crabs. They can't breathe underwater (and will drown) and they are NOT easy to take care of if you actually want them to live. Otherwise, you're just slowly killing them :(
>> Anonymous
hahaha my backyard is a river, and every summer me and my best friend used to collect at least 50 fiddler crabs from the river and put them inside a giant fishtank full of watery sand and we'd feed them clams and stuff.. they always survived the whole summer in the tank and we'd let them go after.. but come to think about it, I have no idea if they even eat clams or what they eat because I was in elementary school when I used to do this.

OP here.

I'm at the University of Texas in Austin, but in a private dorm.

>>188906
No hermit crabs, they're lame.

>>188974
I plan to make it filled halfway with water with a bunch of rocks that stick out. Apparently some land is necessary for happy crabs. Hopefully they won't try to get out looking for land.

>>189193
I've checked both, no crabs :/

>>189412
I was thinking about getting some of those. Aren't they tiny or something?

>>189510
AWESOME

>>189549
Yeah, pretty much any crab would be great at this point.

>>189963
I've looked into cephalopods like octopuses and cuttlefish, but they're few and far between, hard to keep, and really expensive. Cuttlefish are so awesome ;_;
