Got a bit yellow Golden Silk Orb Weaver hanging out outside one of my windows. Call'em banana spiders around here in Florida.(as I'm sure you're aware.)

My roommate hates spiders, but I talked him into letting it live. No reason to kill the thing.

Thanks for letting us know.

We have the most impressive webs in our yard right now. They stretch from the ground to the hedge to the tree limbs, 20 ft spans. Well, the web proper isn't 20 ft, but the main strands are. The spiders aren't all that large, either. Kind of medium.

Medium, huh? Just wait 'till the family cat goes missing...

I grew up in Florida and didn't really start to see these guys until I moved from the southwest to the northwest (Sarasota County to Levy County). After the move I lived on 20 acres of scrub oak forest and cypress swamps that was further surrounded by the Lower Suwanee Refuge. Between the ages of ten and eighteen I hiked all over the area and came across thousands of the suckers. Only on two occasions did I ever run into their webs and it was unsettling. One of those two times actually had the spider crawling on me for a moment before I could brush it off. Damn thing was the size of my face at the time.

Make sure to wake up early and check out the webs. Morning dew in Florida is some powerful stuff because of the humidity and the beautiful display of water droplets shining off the intricate silk architecture is something I never got tired of seeing. The bigger the web the better, too.

I used to have black and yellow argiopes (a. aurantia) all over the place, but after the hurricane they've been completely supplanted by n.clavipes. I haven't seen one anywhere. It's weird, I wonder what happened to them?
