also i am using the the reserve sump as a temporary holding pen for a few of my chubs one has head and lat erosion if anyone knows any good ways to get rid of it safely please let me know

Bumping fr any imput like what should i put into the system next? what do you think(i know the algae is a bit overgrown but i like to let the tangs eat natural hair algae as well as nori and some other herbivore preps)

I wonder what it feels to have a remora stick to you.

WTF is reflecting in the tank?
>> Anonymous
Damn that's some set up you've got. I guess trying to keep all the salt from building up is a lost cause.
>> Anonymous
>>309333
Check your tank for high nitrate levels, as that's a primary cause of head/lat erosion.

>>309423
False, nobody knows the true cuase, everything else is speculation
>> Anonymous
>>309437
Okay, I correct myself - from my experience/research it is.

At any rate it wouldn't hurt to test it and do subsequent water changes and see what happens.
>> Anonymous
>>309423
i do weekly test of all the parameters every thing is at ideal levels. also nitrates rarely have the chance to build up with my weekly water changes. i usually do a 10-15%. i have heard some places that head and lat erosion is caused by poor nutrition is there any truth to that?
>> Anonymous
>>309438
Enough nitrates to affect a bony fish would probably easily kill a shark?
>> Anonymous
>>309449
very true
>> Anonymous
>>309448
I've heard/seen high nitrates, cramped tanks, lack of natural sunlight, nutrition, leaking voltage into the tank etc...

I have read accounts by several respected institutional aquarists that state that their only recourse is moving the fish to large outdoor pens. Nutrition/tank/nitrates should obviously not be a concern in institutions.....so who knows....

>>309457
if you look at my pics i do not think it is a cramped system. and there is a bit of sunlight that gets in from the window beside it and there is some extra light coming off of the reef tank across from the sump

Some kind of bacterial/ fungus infection?
I'd have it checked via microscope.

i have taken samples and scoped them and found nothing unusual. however i do know that in freshwater internal parasites can cause it in oscars

OP here:

goddamn /an/ i really wanted you to rip my tank to peaces. i can handle it. let me know what i am doing wrong, tell me off in general point out my flaws as an aquarist. jets see what you got

Aqua/an/on here again

Looks fine to me, a lot of DIY, but that nevert hurt anything...
Also, RedSea Berlin skimmers are made in Isreal by dirty Jews to low industrial standards for their price. There. No but really that skimmer sucks, but it's probably the only one "rated" (lol) for that sized tank that Carolina Biological Supply had for sale. You should really go here www.aquaticeco.com and order one of there catalogs, I flip through it just for fun, it's great.

My 160 acropora/clam tank has twice the skimming that tank has, but I run a bare bottom tank with acros that is for all intents and purposes sterile, you have a 500g with shark, remora, and some tangs that gets weekly water changes (50g a week doesn't seem like much either actually, lower your nitrates from 50ppm to 45ppm..woot good job there) Anyway, I find your set-up more than adequate.

yes i am well aware of how much that skimmer sucks if you look closely at the pic you can see that it is not running, however i just got it running and i modified it to work as a venturi skimmer with the removal of some components and the addition of some new parts. also i am currently in the process of building a larger better custom skimmer myself. but thank you for the input and i will look into getting a catalog from your source and see if i can find something that fits my needs.

I didn't mention them specifically for their skimmers, I'm sure ones just as good can be had somewhere for less money or made.

They just have a bunch of cool stuff that I thought you would appreciate browsing through, they even throw in lots of limnological and hydrobiology information and products too, just picked up a nice surber sampler there for my own pleasure also (imma nerd).
Anway, you asked for anon to be cruel and that is all I had. It is not what I would personally do with a tank that large, but I've seen worse lol

If you really want to open yourself to criticism post all you got on reefcentral.com in the large tank sub-forum.

awesome site i browsed some of the site and i liked what i saw. also i am a huge fish geek my self as you can see this tank was not designed for elegance, but functionality and i works quite well. i may take your advice and post on reefcentral. i just posted on 4chan because i am kind of a /b/tard in my free time and i thought /an/ would enjoy seeing my tank i have moar pics of other smaller systems that i run, but they are not as impressive as the shark tank also feel free to post pics of your tanks regardless of size. (here is a pic of my batfish, he is one of the more odd fish in my collection)
