ANIMAL PLANET BITCH! DO YOU WATCH IT!?

There's a wolfhound that frequents my local dog park. It's a really nice dog and plays well with the other dogs, but it still scares the shit out of me. I think it's because I know that, if inclined, that dog could maul me to death in five seconds flat. Luckily, they're pretty sweet.

I couldn't save the pics, but here's a 7 foot long great dane
http://www.local6.com/news/5182294/detail.html
Also, in person I saw a dog...can't think of the breed name. They're those dogs that used to be used on mountains to save people in avalanches. His head was easily 2 feet across, and he was easily 7 feet long. It was insane.
And lastly, I actually saw a wolfhound standing next to a chiwawa in a park, but I didn't get a pic. It was pretty funny though :)

Head two feet ACROSS? You mean wide, from ear to ear or something? That's either BS, flawed memories or fucking hallucinations. No way.

I think I've heard of people having theirs live for around 13 years, you just need to make sure they get lots of exercise and eat right. But I'm not sure that always works. It's too bad the little yappy dogs generally live longer than the big calm ones.

>>126717
Yeah that's the one. I mean ear-to-ear.
It could have swallowed a baby whole. I couldn't believe how gigantic it was. It probably could have been a record-winner but the owner wasn't interested in that stuff.

Clearly he used his penis as a scale, since we all know that six penisinches = 1 standard foot.

I'm serious! Those dogs have very big heads to begin with. It really was that big.
I met the owner and dog in Rockport, MA, so if you're ever there you could bump into her yourself. It was in the back of some seafood restaurant.

Look, I've seen, handled and playfully wrestled with St. Bernards'. Yes, they're big and their heads are massive; my one hand (palm on top of the head with fingers spread) couldn't quite reach both temples at once, and I have big hands. But. Not. Two. Feet. Across! What are you, a midget? Twelve years old?
>> Bitter Anon !!WJLRQ1cwCyZ
>>126870
Eh, from my experience, it may be possible. I've met a mastiff/benard mix whom had a 12"+ head, from ear to ear. Yes, I measured. My hand is 8.5" long, and I could put a little over one and a half hand across his head. I think saying two feet is a bit much, but a 16-18" skull is not out of the realm of possibility.

>>126877
I'll take 18 inches, at least. I don't actually measure it or something. I left it alone.
But it was lying down, and if I lied down next to it, it would have been longer than me. I'm 5'2. I have never seen a dog that big before or since, in person.

I didn't take pictures of it. When dealing with dogs that size, I generally am way too busy keeping them from killing things to sit around and take pictures.

Big dogs are generally pretty damn harmless.

A mastiff has the biggest head of any dog IIRC. In terms of wideness. Before we got a rescued mastiff a lady brought hers over to show us how big they were. She had a female and male long haired mastiff. The female was pretty small, 150-160 pounds. She just lay down by the couch and hung out. The male was 200+. He was 2 years old, so very playful and NOT FULLY GROWN! He was like a damn lion, it was insane. He'd pick up bones our dogs would spend a while on (and we have a bulldog, who have very strong jaws) and pulverize them in one bite. He tore up two or three toys in his visit. Pretty sweet dog, but rambunctious + 200+ pounds can be scary.

Now, our rescued mastiff was smaller (120 when he was found, 40-60 pounds below healthy weight), and he had a bad heart that gave out after around 6 months. We now have a great dane/Irish wolfhound mix. She's a very mellow dog most of the time, but hates strange men. Absolutely glued to my mom.

In my experience heug are very gentle, and don't go around killing/eating random things.

Trained dogs and dogs that have not been abused are generally gentle. I rarely get to work with well trained dogs. There is nothing quite like having to wrestle a dog that weighs more than you do into submission after someone has beat him with a pipe his whole life. Good times.

Ah, yes, the sweet meeemoriiees!
*wrestle* *GLOMP* "No, that is my arm! Give it back! You are a dog, it isn't useful to you! BAD DOG!"
Hee, I even started it at an early age with a very playful male Karelian beardog that happened to weigh as much as I did. It was the biggest K.B. I've ever seen, high and with a much heavier build than any other of its kind. Big ol' chum had a head as big as mine is now. :D I think it would've been quite funny to see on video, a 12-year old kid taking a food bowl to the dog and the gets jumped out of the blue. "NO FOOD YET, I WANNA RASSLE! YAY!" It usually ended up with me holding it down and choking it by twisting its collar tight until it submitted. And three seconds later, BAMF. "AGAIN, YAY!" Too bad it decided to grow up and calm down at the early age of eight and got all boring. :D

Er, you know, it's not such a good idea to throttle your own dog and deny him food in order to do so. I'm glad you enjoyed yourself, but repeatedly depriving him of oxygen can cause serious brain issues. Maybe that's why he slowed down later in life, eh?

>>127112
The mix I was talking about weighed about 210 (Somewhere in there, I wasn't in charge of him once he was crated.), was covered in huge scars, and belonged to someone down in Slidell, La. Proably would have been a sweet dog, except that his home was flooded and he had been eating refuse and god knows what after he'd been abandoned. The crew on that particular boat was a couple of middle aged biddies, me, and a huge burly gent who absolutely hated rescue work. He was there to keep us from getting shot at, not to catch the animals. With that particular dog, it seemed to really want help, but was scared to death of getting on a boat, so I ended up having to cling to him until he collapsed from exhaustion, then load him onto the boat, crate him, and rest myself. For the record, I am 5'2 and 130lb, and I don't mind being bitten if it means an animal gets to live. I'm a balsy little bastard, so I got to handle the "dangerous" but not "vicious" animals.
