Not outrageous, veterinary medicine (especially surgery which is likely here) is EXPENSIVE. My cousins paid $10k USD to fix up their cat when it swallowed glass shards of some sort.

$5500 in surgery + $4500 in recovery.

Should of let the piece of shit die and bought yourself a real pet like a bunny.

I can't imagine any operations on an animal costing more than $500 in my home country. My dog ran into a sharp piece of steel and almost died of blood loss, the two hour surgery and all the other expenses were about $300 combined. My other dog gave birth and it cost roughly about $500, and she had to be c-sectioned.

>>216258

yeah, if my cat eats glass shards it deserves to die.
>> Anonymous
Holy shit, 4k?

I'm a sucker, so if I had it I'd pay to keep it alive, but fuck. D: Thats a lot.
>> Anonymous
Perhaps I'm overly sappy, but OP is a wonderful, good-hearted person. Alot of bastards would go "Screw it, it's a fucking cat, I'll go get another one off the street for free."

Kudos for realizing money isn't as important as a life.

My Lab ate a whole light bulb and couldn't have cared less.

Run over by what? Car?
If you let your cat out it's your own damn fault.
Outdoor cats are very likely to get hurt.
>> Anonymous
My 3-legged cat that I adopted (found) already had all his shots, had already been castrated, and let's not forget a hefty amputation surgery. I only had to pay for his FELV boosters.

Best fucking cat ever.

Would you pay 4k for your cat? Or maybe a pet mouse? Pet milipede?

Would you pay 10k? 20k?

Everyone has their limits. Its not like we're all rich and able to afford everything. I can pay a couple hundred dollars, hell maybe even 1k if my cat gets sick or hurt. Doesn't mean I can't afford to keep her.
>> KZN
>>216458
I agree. I see a lot of "HELP I CAN'T PAY FOR THE VET MY PET IS DYING" threads on /an/, and it's nice to see someone who actually payed all that money to save his cat.
>>216530
I can't speak for everyone, but I have no limits when it comes to saving my pet's life. If my dog needed 20k surgery, I'd pay it even if I had to take out a loan. I don't care if it costs me a million, if it saves his life, I'm up for it.

He's a family member to me. If your mother or sibling needed money for a surgery that would save their life, you'd pay it, no matter what, right?
>> Anonymous
>>216532
They wouldn't want me too. Both of my parents already said that if its to much and it causes problems, pull the plug on 'em.
>> Anonymous
I had to pay upwards of 4k for my cat too.
And she still died T_T
>> Anonymous
Heh, be happy he's alive.

My cat died three weeks ago from an infection. Be happy you didn't find your cat dead. Four vet visits, half of them emergencies. Still didn't do the trick, if money could have saved his life I would have forked out as much as possible.
>> Anonymous
Unless you went to a big animal hospital and not just a vet's, or your cat had MASSIVE internal damage, I'd say you got stiffed and should find a new vet. When my dog (shepherd/greyhound mix) had an infection inside of his head, he came close to dying and stayed at the vet for a week strapped to a machine, but he came through and with only a $300 vet bill.
>> stabby
>>216635
$300 for all that? Where the shit do you live?

Generally speaking, medical care -whether for people or animals- is expensive. Remember you're not just paying for what was done to your pet, you're also paying the vet's and tech's income, overhead for running the clinic, sanitizing of equipment, etc etc. Yes, it kind of sucks, but such is the cost of our advanced medical care. I spent the night in the hospital and it cost me about about 1000. A night at the vet's and having surgery cost me a measly 750 for my ferret.... so medical care for pets is still cheaper than human medical care.

OP is awesome, all the complainers in this thread are miserable assholes who'll never knw ture happiness or compassion. Unless you just can't afford it.

If I ever became filthy rich I'd open up ultra-low-cost vet clinics for all the poor pet owners.
>> Anonymous
>>216657
I considered that, but... think of all the fuckers who would come to get their animals fixed up just so the animal cops didn't take them away. =(
>> stabby
>>216660
Very true :( That's a major issue with my plan and I can't think of a realistic way around it. The clinic would help anyone who came in, including people who need and deserve help and assholes who shouldn't have animals to begin with...on the other hand at least the pets from bad owners would get the treatment they need.

This was in the Midwest of USA. Low prices make up for living in a place where nothing happens. There wasn't surgery involved with my dog, it was just a glorified kennel stay with medicine being pumped into his body. Surgery would have pushed it to about 1k, but no more than that. I'm now living in a larger city but I did "vet shopping" and have preferences over some that will charge you just for walking in the door.

Lol, welcome to 2008. My 3 cats have had medical insurance all their lives, the oldest is 12. You can get it lots of places, I get mine from Sainsbury's (a supermarket).
I find it very hard to believe that a similar arrangement is not available in the US. (England here btw)

Also, om nom nom nom.

The first 4 hits on google for "US pet insurance" give companies that offer what you need. Didn't look very hard, did you?

Like I said, I'd borrow money. Whatever it takes. Maybe I'll be nearly starving for a month. But I saved a family member.
