Anyone else find it interesting that they majority of the prehistoric mammals being posted are from South America?

My favorites gotta be Chalicotherium. I'm also fond of the Glyptodon though.

By the way, why do some of you like the Saber-tooth so much? You know those teeth were extremely brittle right? They couldn't use them as real weapons. They were mostly for intimidation.

They killed things with them, that's why, with surgical precision.

Yea, and there are plesiosaurs in loch ness.

*rolls eyes*
>> Anonymous
No seriously, they had almost no bite force and their teeth were extremely weak. What made them good predators is their muscular body.

A Jaguar could wipe the floor with a Saber-tooth, especially Smilodon(which I assume most of you are referring to).

Diprotodon. Rhino-sized marsupial, relative of the wombat. Evidence suggests that not only did they carry their young in pouches, they also had the capacity to seriously excavate.

I mourn for the world that does not have Thylacoleo carnifex. It may not be as funky-looking as Smilodon, but it was a hundred times as effective.

Another missing marsupial is the Giant Short-faced Kangaroo. Double a red kangaroo's size, replace its paws with grappingly hooks and replace its feet with a single hoof-like claw. Then slam it at speed face-first into a wall.

Definately. Modern morphological evidence based on new fossils shows that the Giant Sloth had a strong vertical bite with incising dentition. This strongly suggests a carnivore.

A 20-foot 5-Ton carnivore.

>Today's vampire bats are quite tiny; they can easily be enclosed in a person's hand, with wingspans that do not exceed 8 inches. Blood is not a very nourishing diet, so it is difficult for a blood-drinking lifestyle to sustain a large creature. But these small vampire bats once had a larger cousin, who is thought to be extinct. Named the giant vampire bat or Desmodus draculae, this creature inhabited Venezuela and Brazil in South America during the Pleistocene. Its wingspan has been reconstructed as being about 17 inches when it was alive. It would have needed to drink a lot of blood to stay alive.

Well, if you want wierd prehistoric mammals, you either have to go to the island continents (Australia and South America) or back to the early parts of the Age of Mammals (when *everything* was fucking wierd-looking)

According to some. According to others they were a subspecies of Homo sapiens, Homo sapiens neanderthalis. In-between a different race and a different species. There are no subspecies of Homo sapiens around today except ours, Homo sapiens sapiens.
