Ant Farm Anonymous
Been thinking of getting an ant farm. I'd like to know what's the best kind I could get for a decent price. Also, if I order the ants, I'd like it if they arrived mostly alive and if delivery didn't take forever.

What about gel ant farms? Seems to be nice and roomy, gel is edible, but will it keep the ants alive for a good amount of time? I want them to be healthy, you know.

Still doing some research on my own, but more advice never hurt.

Get Lasius niger, they are cheap because they are EVERYWHERE :>

Don't buy.
Ants are fucking easy to find if you got a little patience to find a queen.
An ant farm is easy to build.
It's like if I sell you a fly in a bocal. Easy for you, but you could do the same with a little time on you hand.
And the gel ant farms are crap, trust me. The ants aren't going to be healthy in here.

Don't buy ants, unless you want the exotic species.
Also, if you buy a gel farm i'll come to your house and kick you in the balls.
The best way to keep a young colony is simply in a test tube with a small forage area, when the tube is getting too small you can put them in a concrete nest with glass over it.

IF you really want to buy ants, these are the most common stores where you can buy them.
Don't buy the expensive ones, you will kill them.

I've heard this said really often, and now I wonder: what exactly is bad about the gel farm? is it that the uv exposure to the ants are harmful? Is the gel made of some substance that does long term damage?

No, the gel makes the ants turn into plants, like Schiavo they are only kept alive but nothing else, they just sit there - it'll kill a colony of 100 workers in only 3 weeks.

Heh, I enjoy the "get the ant queen yourself" advice, living in San Antonio. Try that here you end up with a faceful of FIRE ANTS, one of the few species of animal whose extinction I wholeheartedly support. We get those and CRAZY ANTS that EAT YOUR COMPUTER.
