/an/, my cat had Lukemia. He was completely out of it, and he didn't react to people.

We put him down today. I had that cat since I was three. The vet put a muzzle and jacket on him because he had a record of being very violent. He was moning and hissing the whole time. I pet him and told him everything would be alright. He stopped, began to pur, and acknowledged me for the first time in the last eight days. The muzzle covered his whole face, so I couldn't see his eye (the other having become clouded). He let the vet do his job while I stroked his head, telling him it would all be alright. The vet injected him...and he just fell down.

It took him twenty seconds to die. I honestly have a heavy conscious; I don't know if he really believed in me, or if he was simply willing to die because he knew I was there. I've become depressed.

I don't know how to deal with it.

Cats (and other pets) are our friends. They come into our life, for a short time share life in it's completeness with us, then we must each go our way. While we are with them treat them well, respect them, speak kindly of them once they are gone. And forgive them, and yourself :)

Hun, I really think your cat understood and truly believed you. having lived on a farm all my life I've seen alot of animals pass on, and they seem more able to understand and accept death than we do.

We had a Clydesdale mare suffer from colic and a twisted gut, the vet came to put her down after hours of agony due to my stupid uncle's indecision. Even though she was in an immense amount of pain and could barely walk she allowed us to lead her out back the barn, before she collapsed down dead she let out a loud, eerie whinny to the rest of the horses in the barn. Her oddly serene nature and the last call to her herd made me a real believer.

You did the right thing, don't second guess yourself about it now.

I know how that is, OP. I had to have my dog put down last July and it made me feel like a piece of shit. (don't bother asking. Old age, it couldn't move on it's own anymore.)

Just remember, it's not a "time left" issue where you wonder how many more days you could have waited. It's a quality of life issue. In that condition, you HAD to have him put down. Like>>302649said, it's better for your cat that you didn't wait any longer.
