Toygers Anonymous
Hey, there is a new breed of domestic cat called Toygers. THey have a similar stripe pattern to that of tigers, and I have seen some small pictures of some that are ven a very nice orange color. Does anyone out there have any good toyger pics? I can't find anything except tiny pics via google.

Ooh! I just read an article about toygers in Life.

The one on the top of the article looks like it's freaking out.

I don't get it. The world is full of stripey cats.

AKA tabbys.

Bengal kitties are either spotted (plain spots or rosetted spots like a leopard) or marbled like an exaggerated tabby pattern..they're not stripey per say.
Pic is of my Bengal baby. ^_^

This one kid I knew's parents got a female one. They found a guy with a stud to breed their cat with, but the guy made them pay some ridiculous price, then they only got to keep the females of the litter, which seems like a rip-off.

But they get away with it, and are widely loved. I'd say that's pretty damn smart.

They did get ripped off. The owners of the female are supposed to pay either the price of a female kitten or the guy gets pick of the litter. Just one.

My cat is clicker trained. She knows sit, sit pretty, speak, and stay (mostly). We're still working with her, she's just a kitten. She walks on a leash like a dog, too, heels and everything.

When's the last time you saw 20 cats pulling a sled through the snow and sub-zero cold? :-)

The thing with cats is that they have absolutely no need to please people. They only do things they're motivated to do. If you can get them motivated, they'll surprise you. If you can't... well, you can try yelling "sit" and "play dead" all you want, they'll probably just find your frustration amusing.

Cats aren't domesticated like dogs are.

there was an article about this cat in the paper the other day. They are bioengineering it, and they say it should be completed by 2010.

here's another one--these are just photoshops, I think, but it's what they are trying to make the cats look like

Latest development: digitally altered photos predict even further development of the Toyger breed.

Srsly. They're not. If you test their behavior in a problem-solving task, and compare it to the behavior of wolves (wild animals) and dogs (domesticated animals), they behave a lot more like wolves than like dogs.

Problem is lack of selective pressure. Virtually no cat owner bothers training their cats. They just feed and play with them.

However, if all owners trained their cats and only allowed cats that perform well to breed, we would have a population of obedient cats in no time!

I have seen once in a lab experiments (harmless) on cat's vision, and the cats were willing to do it, and they were actively collaborating!
I was so surprised but they explained to me how they did it: simply by offering small delicious treats for every experiment. When cats are motivated they can be collaborative. The real problem with cats is they are not social like dogs, so they don't recognize a leader and obey it. But if it is in their own interst they can pretty much the same things.

I taught my cat to sit on command using psotive reinforcement (ie, treats).

who the hell wants an obedient cat? That's what dogs are for.

There is no problem. It's just you domineering would-be-dictators who think there is. Not everyone wants a slave for a pet.
