Well, it depends on what you're going for. If you just want a small bird that will sit happily in a cage chirping and warbling all day and will only live for a few years, canaries are fine. Same with finches and budgies.

If you're looking for a bird that you want to become emotionally attached to and have it stay out of the cage for most of the time, a cockatiel are your best. They live for a relatively long time, sing beautifully (though this can take some cajoling) and can be very intimate.

I'd also advise against any larger cockatoos and parrots like galahs or macaws. This is because they destroy your furniture, are VERY noisy, hellishly expensive, will most likely outlive you and can take off your finger if you piss them off enough.

You should get a rosy bourke. They're nonagressive, pleasant sounding, pinku, and kawaii. Kind of like a budgie, but not as common.

if you get a cockatiel, be sure you devote plenty of time to it, or it could end up driving you crazy with squawking. Be sure you're willing to do all the associated maintenance like cage cleaning too.

Get a couple. Some people I know have one and they bred. There are two babies, now plus the couple.
