Owning birds is an exceptional example of human cruelty. The one animal that most symbolizes freedom, and can fucking FLY, is held in little jails for people's amusement. I am very wary of bird owners.

my birds only go into their "little jail" to sleep, for what it's worth. They have free reign over the house when I'm home during the day, which is most of it. I daresay they get more enjoyment out of a 2BR-sized space than a dog or a cat would, because they're so small and the house is so proportionally huge to them.

This. My pacific parrotlet was never clipped and could fly as much as she wanted while i was home. She only went to her cage to sleep or when she felt like it on her own. If I ever get another bird i will do the same thing, because she hated being in her cage and i feel its cruel to leave them in it most of the day.

you don't, really, but with little birds like that it's never very big and totally easy to clean up. They make more of a mess with their food.

And this stuff is a godsend.
