Are newts in general good pets? What is the best kind of newt to have as a pet. Also what is a good newt for a beginner?

Newts in general don't make good pets. They're like a cross between taking care of a moderately difficult fish, and a delicate reptile.
Here's some links to learn more.

This is where to buy some good ones.

Cynops would probably be best for a beginner who is willing to do some research, and prepare a proper enclosure.

It depends on what you're looking for in a pet - if you want something that you can interact with, newts/salamanders aren't really for you.

That said, I own a tiger salamander, and it's pretty awesome and easy to take care of. Pic related.

They are boring, but they don't usually live that long unless you know what you're doing.

Newts are boring. I got mine about 10 years ago, and honestly got bored with it within about a month. Still have it, dont exactly take good care of it, but it REFUSES TO DIE. And apparantly they live up to 60 years. So ima just give it away. Yea, crappy pet. Boring.

I used to own some fire-bellied newts, easy to take care of, but they can smell and they don't do all that much.

Once I caught like six eastern newts (red-spotted) and they were pretty cool. They were easy to handle and cool to look at. They don't really move much, though. They were really easy to take care of too, I don't know what kind of newt everyone else here had but eastern newts are a piece of cake to keep. I would recommend having more than one because a lone newt would probably be really boring.
