A good bath with hot, soapy water will kill adult fleas on your pet. However that doesn't do you much good. You have to get rid of the eggs as well as fleas elsewhere in the house (and yard if you hve an outdoor kitty).
Cleanliness in general is the #1 thing that you need to take care of. Don't worry about buying special flea treatments (yet). First things first, you need to clean up clutter, vacuum like crazy (and frequently), etc. Focus espeically on areas where your cat spends a lot of time. Treating your house with a simple insecticide is another good first step, and it's not expensive. Just get some permethrin-based home insecticide from the hardware store. It's cheap and it is also human and pet-friendly. Spray along baseboards, in corners, behind furniture, etc.
Also don't forget to wash your kitty's bed, soft toys, and any other items that your cat comes in contact with regularly.
