There is a bat on the ground outside my job; I think it's hurt, as it's not really flying around, though other than that he seems fine. No visible wounds, anyway.

So my question is, what can I do about this little guy? Can I feed him or take care of him or what?
>> Anonymous
Yes. YES.

Nurture him back to health and transform him into your bloodthirsty winged minor.

Rabies get!

Better figure out how you'd feed and house it first. Also get a nice little pick for his afro.

Bat's can't take off from a flat surface. Get a tennis racket or something and throw him in the air with it. You have to be quick though, or you won't be able to nail him with the return stroke.

that cant be true... dont vampre bats land and nick at the ankles of cattle and shit?

bats are mean little fuckers if you scare them. They are also a rabies resevoir species - they can have it and be infectious but not die. Don't fuck with it.

Probably the nicest (and safest) thing to do would be to look up and see if there's any wildlife rehabilitation centers around you, the kind that take baby birds and whatnot. Call them and ask what to do with it.

Or I suppose you could try calling the humane society or animal control. I'd probably just scoop it into a box and leave it somewhere forest-y, at least someone outside your job won't step on it.

no its true

Humane Society will not do anything for animals that people will not adopt out of their centers.

Found a baby raccoon, called Humane, refused to pick it up, threatened to kill it, blah blah

The rabies reservoir comment was right on. Last I heard, the CDC was recommending rabies shots to anyone who even *might* have been in contact with a bat.

Is it dangerous?

Is Bats?

About a month ago I heard this stupid kid at some elementary school in my area brought a wild bat to school and every one in his class came in contact with it so the whole class had to get rabies shots. Paid for by the school. Cost them a shit load of money.

It is an omen. You shall become a crimefighter under the guise of a bat. A bat man.

Is it legal to buy a pet bat? Or possible?
>> Anonymous
yeah for future reference picking up a bat usually results in them biting you out of fear. if you get bitten by a bat you need a rabies shot, and there are some other nasty diseases you can get, so try to use gloves in the future. they are freakin adorable tho.

Jesus Christ, roughly one percent of all bats have any transmittable disease. People need to calm the fuck down.

However your safety comes first, wild animals might have disease, roughly one percent might have a disease, but you might just be unlucky. It is quite possible to get nothing, but gettin bit is nothing good...

This ignorance is what makes stupid morons come to the hospital 5:46 in the morning just to waste most workers' time jsut to say "wash it". And if you don't go a week later the stupid is in a bed crying and dying. haha.

Be careful anyway.

Put it on some hedge, bats cannot take flight from plane surface. And do not touch it barehand, you might get rabies L O L

Bats usually get inside my appartment :|, since we are three women, my mon and aunt always get scared the hell out of them, so i have to deal with them, i usually throw a towel over them, watch them a little while i keep them in the towel, then take the towel to hand out of the window, they usually fly away to the dark outside, since the light are on inside the apartment.

I just read in the news that here in az rabies infections in animals are reaching a record high. The article said it was mostly from finding bats in your back yard and picking them up. The more you know.

Well, that might be true, but I'm sure that like 90% of sick bats act sick (you know, like the one hanging around OP's work). So sick-acting bats tend to have higher infection rates than ones that, say, fly the fuck away when you get near.

i always thought that smaller bats didnt have the teeth/jaw power to really break skin? you know, like little ring neck snakes - they can chew on you all they want, nothing happens.

Some dumb cunt from my hometown decided to mess with a bat in her church and got rabies. She went into experimental induced coma treatment while doctors pumped her full of every drug on the planet and she eventually got over it. Everyone soon declared it to be a MIRACLE STRAIGHT FROM JEEZIS HIMSELF while completely dismissing any thought of crediting it to medical science. I raged.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeanna_Giese

"Giese... PICKED UP A BAT that she found in St. Patrick's Church... She sustained A SMALL BITE on her left index finger, and having treated it with hydrogen peroxide, her mother DECIDED NOT TO SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION."

OP, ARE YOU A BAD ENOUGH DUDE TO NOT SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION?
