A free one from the shelter, the one that looks healthy, curious, and maybe even walks up to you for a snuggle.

oh...kitty...litter, not litter of kitties lol on me

Something that is low in dust, and don't spend the money of flushable shit, I've never tried a brand that didn't involve a plumber later. Your budget and odor tolerance are more important. Hell I know a shelter that uses play sand they buy by the ton for several dollars.

Elitefags use carefresh ultra though if your cat will use it.

Feline Pine. It's worked for me for more than ten years, and it's what the world's largest no-kill cat sanctuary uses to keep their facility odor-free.

I've always used an unscented variety for my cats. Anything else and they say, "Fuck this, I'm peeing on your couch."

My cat here. Cats, from my experience, will use anything. Sylvie here uses Tidy Cats, and she does just fine with it. You should be worrying about what food your cat should have!

I use the Arm & Hammer Odor Eliminator, personally. Clumps really well and (somewhat) masks the odor.

I use World's Best Cat Litter because I have an automatic litterbox, and the litter doesn't stick to plastic like other litters do. It's super easy to scoop because it won't lump into a giant mass of cat litter when your cat goes in it, and it's got different-textured granules that sift faster than sand. Also, no scents if anyone is your house is allergic/sensitive. Before I had the automatic litter box, I used Scoop Away Multi Cat formula. Smelled great, the cats always smelled like the litter (the clean litter), and worked pretty well.

Some people will warn you that if you are getting a kitten, you should use non-clumping cat litter because if kitten ingests the litter (you know, it gets on her paws and she licks it off?), it can cause intestinal blockage. I've never personally had this problem, but I've seen it happen. Just FYI.

Question, is an automatic litter box a worthwhile investment? If so, what kind do you own/would recommend? My main problem is odor. My parents are constantly bitching about it and there is little I can do besides find a very strong-smelling litter that pathetically helps mask it.

I've played with the idea of getting an automatic one before, but I'd be afraid it would be too loud and clunky. If it's either, my cat will just be scared of it and shit elsewhere.
