So /an/, I'm out in my yard a bit ago and hear this strange vibration sound. Upon investigation I find this huge cicada killer on the ground, apparently struggling with some invisible assailant. It's vibrating its wings madly but seems unable to fly and is curled around itself trying to sting ... something. Since it's preoccupied I gather it into a tupperware container and am contemplating speeding its preordained doom with cottonballs soaked in denatured alcohol. Reactions/ comments?

End its misery humanely, please.

Aren't alcohol cottonballs supposed to be humane for insects? Any idea what the hell's wrong with it?

I saw this on my campus once. I am an entomology student and we had a tree that was just swarming with Cicada Killers. They were all eating the sap coming out of a funky looking tree and were acting all intoxicated like. The birds and ants were going wild capturing them and eating them but acting fine.
