Parasitic fungus. It grows inside it's host, slowly crippling them, then it bursts out with little nuggets of food so it's consumed bby and transmitted to the next victim.

spores get lodged in the insect and the thing gets digested. the thing that bursts out is the fruiting body which produces new spores.

I like cordyceps. They do sone really cool stuff. In some species, before the infected insect dies, the fungus "takes over" it's brain, and makes it climb up a stem, so as to get better dispersal of the spores. You end up with some really cool insect shaped fungi, too.
