So I am thinking of getting a snake for my boyfriend since he wants one so badly. Do you know of any breeds that are relatively small- like acceptable for a 10gal tank? He suggested a ball python but I was curious if there were any others.

almost any kingsnake will be small enough for a ten gallon for the first couple years of its life.

pic related, 3 variations of the variable (or "thayers") kingsnake, that all came from the same clutch

corn snakes will do fine in a ten gallon as well. most corn snakes and king snakes will get 3-5 feet depending on the species. Theyre much prettier to look at than ball pythons IMHO,but if he wants a big snake for shock value like a ball python, they dont do as well. find a pet store that has a good selection, there are literally as many different kinds of snakes as there are kinds of fish in the sea.

Snakes are my favorite animals, i've owned quite a few.
protip: ask to handle whatever snake youre interested in before buying it. Ones who poop on you or try to bite, usually continue this behavior for a very long time, sometimes forever. Not necessarily all the time, but when you take them out of the cage definitely. So do yourself a favor and try to avoid the poopers. In my experience, male snakes tend to poop alot less than the females. although im talking kingsnakes, ive never had a python poop on me.

I suggested variables because those tend to be very calm, easy to maintain first snakes. If your boyfriend does not like getting pooped on, i cannot stress enough to pick out a snake that doesnt do it the first time you pick it up. I used to have an orange pueblan kingsnake (female) who shit on me every time i picked her up. She would also shit in such a way that it would run down her tail, and then flick it at me. She got it on my face a few times. Don't get an orange pueblan.

Tank size will have to be upgraded for most though within a few years, keep that in mind, OP.

yeah a ball python will grow out of a ten gallon FAST. If you dont get it as a baby, it will already be too large for one. I mean, it will fit in the tank, but it will be miserable.

Not only a ball python but pretty much any snake that was listed here. Corn snake ok in a 10g for it's whole life? I beg to differ. A 3-5 ft snake living in a 10 gallon tank is pathetic.
OP, please make sure your boyfriend researches the snake he decides to get. Snakes aren't easy pets and shouldn't be treated as such. ALL of the snakes suggested here will out grow a 10 gallon tank in 3-4 yrs, planning should be made to accommodate the snake in the future.

it was stated in the first reply that they will outgrow a 10 gal

Hmm I will definitely tell him all this. I will cross a 10gal tank off my list!

Is space or money the issue? You can usually find some cheap used aquariums on craigslist. (I've seen 55 gallon tanks for $20, though it was just the glass box - no accessories.)

Kenyan sand boas are small enough for a 10 gal.

Seconded, some females do get big enough they need a 20L, but thats as big as you need.

Western Hognoses can live all their lives in a 10 gallon.

Ball python? Big? I don't think so, Tim.

Its more of a space issue. He cannot fit a 55gal tank in his current room or anything like that! But I will check into those two you guys mentioned that can be just fine in 10gal tanks

Well, you could get a 20 gallon long. That's got a footprint of about ~30x12 inches, which isn't that much worse than the ~20x11 inches of most 10 gallons. You could still keep it on top of the average dresser/bookcase.

Replying mainly to the idiot who posted about corn snakes in a 10 gallon.
