/an/, are dogs supposed to be omnivores or carnivores? mine eat raw carrots and it confuses me
>> Anonymous
They are in the order Carnivora, and technically they are carnivores. However, it is definitely not unusual for dogs (and even cats) to enjoy fruits and vegetables from time to time. Hell, I have even heard of farmers having problems with coyotes eating their watermelons.

Sorry what? I was distracted by Suiseiseki.

They are called "African Americans" and certainly not "coyotes". I'm sure they'd be offended by that.

I lol'd.

My dog used to eat all sorts of things. He didn't like lettuce, though. No dog seems to. But he did like lots of fruits and some veggies.

So, I'd say omnivores.

Dogs are omnivres.

Cats, unlike dogs, are obligate carnivores. That means they can't survive on plants and in fact can't digest them properly. Dogs are sufficiently omnivorous to survive on plants alone, at least theoretically.

dogs are carnivores. they can be induced to eat a plant based diet, and they may occasionally eat fruit (and mushrooms) in the wild, but not sufficiently often to be considered omnivores. what they do in unnatural circumstances like domestic environments is of little biological consequence. if you considered any occurrence of atypical eating habits (or occasional opportunistic foraging) practically all animals would be omnivores.

It doesn't matter what they do. What matters is what they CAN. A vast majority of the canines can survive on plants and are thus omnivores.

My dog loves lettuce, cabbage, broccoli carrots and the like. He'll eat anything, including honeydew and grapes.

Speak for yourself. My cat eats popcorn and cheerios.

Wrong. Classification is based on behaviour. The fact that they can, and occasionally will eat things other than meat just means they're not OBLIGATE carnivores, or hypercarnivores. Canines are carnivores.

Agreed. Once again, for those who missed it the first time, every member of the canine family is in the scientific order CARNIVORA.
