Koi Anonymous
Requesting Fish pics and info. (especially goldfish and Koi) I was wondering if anyone here owns Koi. I was planning on getting some type of pond fish (Goldfish or Japanese Carp) eventually and I was wondering how difficult they are to take care of. I've heard that koi have fairly long lifespans if taken care of, and even fish like goldfish can live up to 10+ years. I've also heard that some fish like koi and goldfish can recognize certain people and familiar people's voices.

I left my big koi in a pond... Coons ate them.

If you want to have them outside, check if there're any big, fishing-type birds near where you live. Don't spend money on fish that are just going to be eaten.

Do Koi fish actually let you pet them?

There's lots of things you can do to prevent getting animals/birds from stealing your fish. You can easily put a netting over a pond, but people don't think that's "pretty" so they just let their fish get eaten. Go figure.
A pond takes a LOT of work and you need it to be at least 3' deep if you ever have freezing weather. Koi can get to be several feet so you need to figure in their final size. Sarasa goldfish will get around 10" easily so they're not much of an alternative. If you want koi, you should have a pretty sizable pond/container.
Please read up more on pond care/sizing before even thinking of getting fish. You are sure as hell never going to get a full, informative post personalized just for you on a forum. Please search on google or something.

On a side note, people seem to think they can plunk goldfish into anything, no matter how small the container. Please don't set your fish up for death after long periods of abuse.

methinks that growing koi is similar to growing bonsais (coincidentally also from asia) in that if you put the koi in a small containing area, that it won't grow that big.

AMIRITE?

no u are not right... their internal organs will grow until there is an organ rupture, and they'll be in extreme pain... but i guess you're right that their scales and bones wont grow bigger than it's container will allow.

I took a bunch of koi pictures in Montreal. Some French Canadian kids threw in breadcrumbs (which they aren't supposed to do) and the fish went nuts.

Since they're too big to post and I'm too lazy to resize them, here's a .rar of them (plus some brief clips of the feeding frenzy): http://www.mediafire.com/?fnomxmljltm
