Awww it's a box turtle.

How many toes does it have on it's hind legs?
If it's three then it's a three toed box turtle...
If not, then it's probably and Ornate.

Please provide scale in the image.

You have an infestation of house turtles, dangle a carrot two inches off the floor to draw them out and you can then shovel them up and dispose of them.

It has three toes on it's hind legs.

So, what do box turtles eat? And what kind of house should I make for it? I've never had a turtle before.

Frozen veggies on a paper plate. (warning: box turtles make adorable nom nom nom faces, so prepare for cute.)

I used to keep mine (road rescues) outside in the yard, but if you're in an apartment, you'll either want a terrarium or an enclosed area like ferrets or small children get, depending on the size. (Reminder: provide scale in the next image.)

In the winter, he'll want to hibernate (or maybe not - I've never kept them indoors). You'll need some damp dirt that's about as tall as he is plus an inch for him to bury himself in, about a foot square. I'd suggest having said dirt available all year, but it's probably not necessary if you don't want to deal with the mess. He might also like a plant to sit under.

They're not terribly social, so you don't need to worry about him being lonely. (If you do get another one, they'll fight for a week or so and then get bored of it and tolerate each other. Amusingly, they'll cooperate on ganging up on later additions.)

Oh yeah, forgot to mention. If you're keeping him indoors or anywhere where there is not a regular supply of worms and slugs and stuff, you might want to provide some to supplement his frozen veggie diet.

mine loved mealworms and fruits and vegies
i kept a tuppawear box with a few mealworms and a box of old oatmeal in a cabinet and fed him a few a day.

Mine ate all the same things, but it LOVED cottage cheese. I finally had to start putting the cottage cheese under the veggies instead of on top, to try to trick it into eating both.

fresh fruits, veggies, and bugs. ie, slugs, snails, earthworms, grubs (if you can stomach digging them up)

Mine loved june bugs. I used to scoop them out of the pool every morning and give them to the turtles... i don't know if the chlorine was bad for them, but they loved it.

Yeah my turtles were spoiled. But then again i used to love digging around for bugs.
