I was reading up on the Alaskan Klee Kai (because of the thread below) today and how the woman who came up with them bred them. My question is, in such a process where you're trying to get certain traits from breedings, what happens to the pups who don't evolve the way you want from the mixes? Wiki said the process took from the mid-70s to 1988. That's a lot of puppies in between, right? Are they considered mutts and just shipped off to die or what? How does animal eugenics work for the loser specimens?

Animal husbandry is a lot more hardcore than I thought, then.

This depends. If the breeder cares at all about their animals, the "defects" go off at a lower price to screened owners. If the breeder doesn't care, they may be dumped at a shelter, sold at a pet store, etc... who knows.

They were probably just snipped and sold as pets. The best ones were kept in the breeding program. I know people who'd argue that the Klee Kai is still a mutt ;)

That's another thing I don't get. How does a mixed breed like that get so quickly recognized by the AKC? Are current designer dogs going to be considered as separate breeds 5 years down the line?

If the breed "breeds true", it is no longer a mutt. If every puppy has the same traits, it is considered a breed. Of course, there are variations allowed if that is part of the breed, such as the powderpuff Chinese crested and longhair/shorthair versions of the same breed.

A good breeder will neuter the unwanted pups and sell them to good homes. A bad breeder will sell them to whoever wants.

You can really work out recessive traits popping up in that short a time span?

If you have a very wide standard, inbreed a lot, or if the breed is made of purely dominant traits, sure. It also helps to have a breed that matures early. I haven't look up the Klee Kai and don't know much about them, so I dunno if they really fit all that.

Most "designer dogs" will never become true breeds because the breeders are only out to make a shitload of cash off of retards who shell out upwards of a thousand dollars to have a "unique" dog. They couldn't give a fuck less about breeding standards.
