Ferrets Anonymous
I get allergic reactions (running nose, itching eyes) when I come into contact with cats. I don't have asthma or anything like that. What are the chances that I'll be allergic to ferrets as well?

Also, I'm not allergic to dogs..

Not always true, but worth a try.

Head over to a Petco or Petland (If you are in North America) and see a ferret. If you guys have no reaction awesome, if you do... Hypo-allergenic cats do exist but they are more expensive and have a slightly shortened lifespan.

Ferrets are awesome pets. Read a lot of info about them before you get one. Expect to pay around $400-500 for two ferrets(Better for their mental health if you have 2.) and supplies.

OP here. Went to a petshop and rubbed my face all over one of the cute little fuzzies. No allergic reaction! I have been researching ferrets for a while and they sound like awesome animals. I might pick one up this weekend. After I have just one for a while I may get a second. Any advice/tips on introducing two ferrets to one another? Are they friendly to strange ferrets or will there be a brawl?

Two methods I've had work when introducing the tube socks with teeth.

1.) Bathe em together. That way they can't tell scents.

2.) Put some feritone on both of them and keep an eye on them. A little playfighting is ok, Ferrets have thick skin, if they make a squealing sound or you see blood, seperate.

if i even walk into a room with cats, in 5 minutes i'll be dead. my room mate got a ferret and lets the little bastard run around and steal shit. it was kind of funny to see my roomie shitting himself because he 'lost' his keys. i keep my door shut now.

aaanyways, i am fine with the little guy in the room. but, when i pet, play, etc with the thing, i doooo have a bit of a hard time breathing, my eyes water just a little, and i sneeze occasionally.

so ferrets offer 20% of cats bullshit. thats something i can live with, and something you can take a claritin for.

typically they will be friendly. However they will have dominance fighting. One ferret will scruff the other and they might make sad noises, but as long as there is no blood and no poop/pee (out of fear) then its fine, just let them fight it out.

When you introduce a new ferret there will always be a mix up in the peck order and will lead to domanince fighting.

But do your research first! Ferrets are no where near the maintence of a dog or a cat. Remember you have to let them out atleast 4 times a day. Get them good food(EVO ferret, totally ferret, zupreem) clean their cage twice a day (litter box) wash bedding (old tshirts towels etc) weekly scrub litter box weekly and wash cage monthly. All those things combined and your ferret wont reek like the ones at petstores.

no there not the maintenance of a dog or cat... there MORE!!! i have had all three animals and the ferrets are by far more work! ferret proofing the house is a constant. vet bills are more expensive becouse although they are the 3rd most common pet in America, they are still considered "exotic" pets, and exotic vets are a BITCH! not only to find a good one, but there prices are ridiculous! Ferret food is way more expensive (unless u have some huge dog) the upkeep on them is like having a puppy all its life, litter box trained or not, you still have accidents, and cage cleaning is a daily thing!
i know it sounds like im bashing ferrets and think dogs and cats are WAY better, but i don't! i have 3 ferrets right now, and I've fostered my fair share, and they are the best little monsters around, but they are SO much work! i wouldn't trade them for the world! but i help out at a local ferret shelter and 99% of the ferrets surrendered are becouse the people had no clue as to what they were getting into. and its heart breaking to see people who love there animals give them up becouse they don't have the time for them.
just please please PLEASE know what your getting into! they are well worth the work, if it dosnt catch you off guard!
