My cat has this weird tick whenever he eats food. He will get some food in his mouth and then shake his head very quickly, but only once. He'll pick up the food, shake, and then chew. It gets food everywhere and I have no clue how to stop him from doing it. Any ideas? (spraying him when he does it doesn't work)

Umm... I thought all male cats did this

He's making sure his food is dead.

It's instinct - he's shaking his "prey" to make sure it's dead.

Many cats do this. Embrace its cuteness.

It's pretty common, make sure you have a piece of plastic/paper/whatever under his feeding bowl.
Easier to clean up.

semi-related question; don't feel like making a new thread:

my dog will pick up a mouthful of food, and then walk around the house chewing it at her leisure. it gets soggy dog food all over the house and it's really annoying. is there any way of making her stop, short of feeding her outside?

try naming it biscuit, take it to the vet, sit on it, or get it at least a 400 gallon tank

When was the last time your cat had a dental? He probably has a cavity.

mayhaps the dental idea is sound - but I always thought shaking their food was meant to help kill it i.e.: breaking it's neck.. but if the cat does it all the time, well cats are funny creatures..
