Losing a pet is one of the hardest things I've been though. It hurt so badly to have something so wonderful in your everyday life taken away from you abruptly.
To me, I think the pain was doubly worse because it wasn't just a pet--it was *my* pet. What if it was *my* fault that this happened? My negligence? My hesitation? My dog couldn't speak or take care of itself, it was up to me to take care of him.
To that, I will just say to let go of those feelings. You and I know very well that we cared for our dogs to the best of our abilities, and that there's only so much you can do.
I grieved for a long time. Now, when I'm alone, I find myself saying my dog's name to myself quietly and remembering all the good times I've had with him. Though the sadness will never quite go away, neither will the joy from these fond memories.
