I just graduated college and snagged a great job, but it's full-time with likely after-hours work. What breed of dog should I look for in an animal shelter (no time to raise a puppy) that I could feel safe leaving alone in my place during work?

Pic not related. Corgis get bored easily, and being left alone all day leaves plenty of time for him to invent his own games, like 'eat the couch cushions' and 'chew the base boards'.

Honestly, if you're going to be away a lot, a dog might not be the best choice. They don't typically take well to being by themselves for long periods of time without developing bad habits in the process. Some breeds, especially the oriental breeds (pekingese, chins) tend to be more catlike and independent, but on the whole it's a bad fit. You could also consider an older or senior dog that needs a home, since they tend to spend the majority of the day sleeping and odds are you really will be saving their life. Tell the shelter staff about your situation, and see if they have a dog that fits your situation. In this case it's better to look at dog's individual personality and not worry as much about the breed or mix.

I'd really consider a cat or a pair of ferrets. They do better with being by themselves for longer periods of time, but can still be playful and personable.

Ferrets require a bit more attention and devotion. Not a good thing for someone who won't be home a lot. A cat is probably the best option, as long as it's full-grown and house trained.

ALL dogs need lots of excersize, and if they don't get that excersize they'll find other ways to entertain themselves - namely, chewing on everything.

A dog probably isn't best for you, anon. I'm agreeing with the above saying a cat would be a better choice - still a lot of personality (there are definitely some playful and incredibly loving cats out there), but less need for attention.

If you're going to get a dog and be absentee, at least get two...
