Hey /an/, I've been searching all over the internets for this, so now, I'm asking you for your help.

What animal skins are illegal to own in the US? Logic dictates that anything endangered is illegal to own, but the law is rarely logical.

Also, b4 murder lol, I've come on a cache of old African animal skins from an estate sale, I want to know if I should even consider reselling or even keeping these.

Even if the animal is currently endangered now, if the animal was killed a certain number of years prior, and also if you have proper documentation as to the origin and source of the animal skins, you will be fine. Even then, you may not be able to cross state lines, and unless we're talking alligator hide bags and mink coats, it will never be able to cross the border.

As to how long ago the animal must've been killed and the necessary documentation, this depends on your state and the animal skins in question.

Generally, the rule of thumb is that if someone sold it in a legitimate fashion to you, you are most likely allowed to possess and resell it in a legitimate manner within same state.

Your state conservation department will know.

There are not a whole lot of skins from Africa that can be pegged as illegal - lions, zebras, various bos/antelope are all game animals.

If they are endangered, such as real leopard (there are many ways to fake leopard) - you will have to find out if they were legally taken or the fact that you bought them in the first place can land you in trouble.
