This naughty bird managed to fly away twice.

First time he went missing for 2 years. We saw him in a "found" poster put up at the intersection where we lived. Apparently about 2 weeks prior a neighbor saw him sitting on the rear-view mirror of the car and caught him. Where he was before that, who knows.

During that time he lost the tip of one toe, gained some white spots on the back of his head and also disturbingly acquired a taste for blood. He will run towards an open wound and start licking at it if you don't stop him.

Second time he flew off as the trash was being emptied. Found him the next day in the tree outside our front door and lured him down with blood.

...Is this bird normal?

I've heard of some types of birds licking the open wounds of large animals for the salt and moisture. Not parrots particularly, but there isn't any reason it might not learn that if its lost and hungry.

u should just give him one of those salt-lick tablets they use for hamsters

1) Get your bird's wings clipped.

2) Cockateils are a desert bird, i've seen flocks of these birds and budgies out in the desert (bit of a blow out when your used to seeing them in pet shops), and blood would be like 'water'. They need any resource to survive on.

Personally I don't like cockatiels. Had one for a pet for 3 years and then it got a tumor I'm guessing under its wing and died. The bird was really hostile towards everyone except my mother, probably because my mom was usually around it the most. Still, I love parrots, amazing pets and birds but with the exception of the cockatiel.
