My mom took Jake to the vet yesterday and they told us he had a tumor in his stomach. The doctor came to our house today and put him down. Kat, Mike, Jimmy(neighbors) my Aunt Jan and Jim, Scott, my mother and myself were all in attendance, an owl and a crow watched from the trees but were gone after he was. he would have been 15 years old on May 7th. I've known that rottie for as long as I can remember. He was stubborn and wanted nothing more in life than to be near my mother and family. He roamed the neighborhood every night and fathered numerous puppies including his son Duke who we still have (he's 4) Duke is currently laying next to Jake's grave he sniffed Jake's sheet he was wrapped in and licked his head before the neighbors layed him in the grave. My mom's a little upset, as most of you know she works from home so Jake was her companion for her every waking hour. When I was younger I would make Jake lay near me while I read scary stories. He would come into my room when I've been upset and licked away tears. We once had to load him into a wheel barrow to get him across the street. If my mom went out of town when she came back he would climb into the car as we were unloading it and refuse to come out for up to 12 hours one time. He was loyal and faithful to the point of only needing a leash to go to the vet. We had him for a very long time and he was able to live out a very full and healthy life for such a large dog. I understand it was past his time with a life expectancy of 10 years, but it will still be sad to answer the door without him tangled at my feet or drive up to the house to not see him "somehow" in the front yard again. He was an escape artist just like his father. As a young dog, after teaching him to not jump on people I taught him to jump up on me and dance. When he got to big and I would stumble, he refused to jump again... he didn't want to hurt me. He loved well and guarded well. May he keep me company when my time comes as well.

He sounds like a wonderful dog.You have my condolences, OP. I had to put down my own dog that I'd had since I was a kid a few months ago. She was the nicest, gentlest, sweetest, most loyal animal you'd ever meet.
