Some cats are super smart and some are retarded, and likewise with dogs. I think a lot of it depends on breeding and, well genetics.

Cats just are better at looking smart to humans. Dogs are either too aggressive or too eager to please.

Cats in my books. The way they learn to manipulate humans into thinking that it is a sign of affection to rub against their feet in hopes of getting a treat is nothing sort of smart, especially since my cat does it only in kitchen and opening the fridge immediately gets him there. If he's really desperate about it, he'll start throwing somersaults and rolling on the floor purring. Not to mention that pretty much all the cats me and my family have ever had, which is a lot, have learned to open doors and two of them even knew how to use a key (that was already placed in the lock), climbing on the couch and turning it with their paw. Whereas most of dogs I have met won't even try to push open a door THAT IS NOT EVEN FULLY CLOSED, they just sit in front of it looking miserable and wait to someone to come and rescue them.
>> Anonymous
dogs have much better problem solving skills than cats, dogs are generalists, and adapt their behaviour to new situations and opportunities with ease. cats, being specialists, do a few things with ruthless efficiency and not much else, their mental capacity reflects this.
>> Anonymous
I don't think anyone really knows how intelligent cats are. Dogs can be taught things and tested because they're social pack animals that can be easily motivated, whereas cats... are cats. A lot of cats have figured out how to use light switches, turn door handles, and as a kid I had a cat who would stop and look both ways before crossing the street but... who knows what the fuck they're thinking and how much is just hardwired.
>> Anonymous
Cats. Been around both dogs and cats a lot in my life, and I have never seen a cat run full-tilt into a glass window (as I have seen many a dog and human do). I think because cats aren't so much as social animals as dogs are, they learn how to do all sorts of things for themselves, whereas dogs, being social and pack animals, learn to rely on others and in strength in numbers. It's different specialties, but I really think it puts cats in the lead.

Except for my cat...I swear I've got the dumbest, but most lovable cat in the universe. -_-

The only time a cat could be considered more intelligent than a dog is if we're talking about small dogs where the intelligence has been effectively bred out.

Dogs are smart in that they understand and embrace complex social structures whereas a cat is a loner...a 'specialist' if you will. Cats are cute and do funny things but in no way are they more intelligent than any sort of standard dog.

Little dogs tend to be retarded.
>> Anonymous
idk maybe you should look it up. I just know that I'm always yelling at my dog for being fucking dumb whilst my cat hardly ever gets into trouble
>> Anonymous
(Certain) Dogs can be trained to solve complex problems and follow a series of complex commands. Good examples are sheep dogs and seeing eye dogs. Anyone who has seen a good sheep dog at work can hardly doubt their intelligence. Seeing eye dogs are capable of moving people around busy metropolitan areas based on a sequence of commands given to them at the start of the day and adapting it take into account obstructions etc.
I haven't had much experience with cats during my life so I can't comment on their intelligence but I though I would throw in my opionion to counter some of the obvious cat bias you are bound to get on 4chan.

First we need to know what you mean by smart.
In terms of academic intelligence, and capacity for learning as opposed to relying on instinct: Dogs.
But you could say cats are "smarter" because they know how to take care of themselves without the owner's constant doting.
And of course you need to take in to consideration individual variations; there are always a few idiots and a few geniuses in any group.

I think it depends on the animal. I've seen retarded dogs and retarded cats and really smart dogs and really smart cats.

You can't generalize an entire species. All of the mutts I've had have been too smart for their own good so I know dogs can be really smart. But at the same time I've seen plenty of sloppy inbreed dogs that don't know how to get into a room when there's two entrances. Same with cats.

There are smart cats, there are stupid cats, there are smart dogs, there are stupid dogs.

Although in overall intelligence I'd say cats and dogs are about equal, I'd say that in interacting with humans, cats are more savvy than dogs.

My 8 year old runt of a brother decided to rampage around the house with one of my cat's stolen toys, trailing after him on a string he held. After chasing him for about 2 laps, my cat realised that if he stood at some midpoint and pounced, he would have two attempts per lap.

This went on for a while, until my cat just got up and slunked off. Thinking that he was no longer interested in play, my brother left the toy and string to go to the toilet.

What do you know, the cat creeps up to the toy, gathers the string up with his paw, bundles it up and walks away with it in his mouth, because he knews the bell on his collar rings when he runs. He only started running when he heard my brother say "OY!"

... Personally speaking, it's a rare dog that does that kind of thing.

Hahahahasfghfd Bitch please. What the fuck does the use humans have for species of animals have to do with their intelligence? Just because a cat doesn't bring you a fucking newspaper doesn't mean it's stupid, maybe it just realizes that it doesn't have to bother sucking up since people are a bunch of dumbasses who feed them just for looking adorable and rubbing against them, so they don't really have to bother with doing anything. It's the cats that use us on regular basis and not the other way around.
>> Anonymous
>>258613
A lot, actually. It shows that they are receptive to learning tasks that are usually outside of their normal behavior. *That* is intelligence. The most you're going to do with a cat is curb it's instincts.
>> Anonymous
>>258620

Then define normal. It's not abnormal for dogs to fetch things to bring them back to their pack, or to alert its pack after sniffing out something. Obedience is just another word for asserting dominance. There's VERY little that could be taught to any domestic animal that is dissimilar to their natural instincts.

Guiding a blind human through an unfamiliar environment.

Or, being trained to sniff out lost humans in snowy mountains and bring them back to safety.

Or, associating words with objects. They are capable of memorizing hundreds of words.

Or, being trained to be a sled dog. I know it sounds simple, but it's far from it.

The list can go on honestly.

Those are examples of what a dog is capable of learning that is outside of what one would consider normal behavior for a dog.

>> Anonymous
>>258647

You forget, the prime examples of the dogs you mentioned, are bred for such acts, and it is actually difficult to tell whether genetic predispositon plays a part in it. For example, ever heard of a Dalmatian seeing eye dog, or a greyhound as a sled dog? How about someone using a beagle for herding?

The skills you mentioned are not comparable across all breeds, and especially in the case of seeing eye dogs - only something close to 10% of potential candidates actually make it to be a seeing eye dog, rest end up as therapy dogs. Perhaps they are the MENSA club of labradors.

Given that we've never ever bred cats for any specified role, it's natural that cats have a low ability to learn. However, I quite suspect that in some alternate dimension, we would have packs of hunting cats, bet on cats for racing, and actually have a successful spy kitty that could record stuff without being run over by cars.
>> Cats v dogs Anonymous
>>258269
The argument that cats can take care of them selfs where as dogs require their humans care is not really true. I grew up on a farm, we always had several outdoor cat and out door dogs. In my experience our dogs were able to hunt just fine and survive on thier own just fine, the same goes for our outdoor cats. However our indoor cat couldn't catch anything, even when it tried. On a second note, our dogs always would hunt together, especially when going after rabbits.

>> Anonymous
Dogs are smarter. They've got bigger brains (doesnt mean everything, but a decent indicator), are more social and rank better at what we as humans would perceive as intelligent behavior (learning tricks and such).

Some things to remember: dogs are true domesticated animals, which means they don't really grow up to be adults. In other words, each dogs mental development is stuck at being an immature wolf. That explains some of the 'retarded' behavior some claim their dogs have... it doesn't mean they are stupid, just childish.

And a cat might have a better chance at survival if you let out in the wild... but if I were to let a pet chimp out it wouldn't live that long, and we can probably all agree chimps are much smarter then cats/dogs. So that argument doesn't mean much.
>> Anonymous
You can train a cat to fetch, and it will do it every time

You can train a dog to fetch, but you can also train it to lead a blind person around, and recognize dangerous objects it has no instinctual "danger" response to, such as moving vehicles, and will avoid them even if the blind person specifically commands them other wise- whereas if there was no danger they would obey.

That's called "Intelligent decision making based on situational awareness."

Cats don't that.
>> Anonymous
dogs are smart, cats are clever
>> Anonymous
>>258583
Which is why cats are intelligent, but not in the sense that we are. Cats are more wild, and more hard wired to survive on their own. Dogs are more maliable, just as humans and apes (and most pack animals) are.

A dog can adapt to any situation. Whether it can survive in the wild or not is irrelevant, as many dumber wild animals can survive in the wild. It doesn't take intelligence for that, just instincts.

I've owned both cats and dogs, and while they both show great capacity for intelligence, I have to say that dogs are smarter. They make connections easier. They see cause and effect more quickly, and can do whatever it takes to get the effect. I see this in cats too, but they cant do it on command. As for cats turning doorknobs, I am not convinced that is a sign of greater intelligence. I see that as a sign of cats using what they have (agility and dexterity) to the fullest extent. I've had dogs that opened cabinet doors as well, but most never tried to turn a doorknob because they knew that was impossible for them. They do know how to tell us to turn it for them, which to me shows more intelligence than attempting to do it themselves.
>> Anonymous
Cats are about as intelligent as horses. They do what they do and any kind of teaching has to be done through reflex learning.
>> Anonymous
Where are people getting the idea that you can't train cats? Cats be trained to do lots of things, but you can't train them the same way you can a dog because they are a different type of animal with a different mind and set of instincts. I've seen cats that have been trained to use a fork when they eat for fucks sake.

I had two cats who were good at manipulating door handles. Both of those cats also loved to roam around our neighborhood but were very adept at not getting hit by cars. Both cats lost interest in my laser pointer when they saw me holding it in my hand as I attempted to wave the beam on the wall.

Teaching a dog to lead a blind person is not that far of a stretch from teaching it to herd sheep. I do wonder if you could breed a species of feline to do that too, after all lions are pack animals and pack hunters, and the way they take down prey is not dissimilar from herding sheep.

I don't know that cats are smarter than or even as smart as dogs, but they aren't as smart they can't be very far behind.

One thing to keep in mind, in the case of some dog species, is that they may be very smart but might not "learn" tricks because they don't see a point in it and don't have a strong instinct to please their pack leader. I do know that cats can be taught to recognize words too.
>> Anonymous
Someone pointed out that wolves are smarter than dogs. Remember that according to current classifications, the domestic dog is "Canis lupus familiaris." A subspecies of the wolf. They are descended from wolves, they breed with wolves, the difference comes from centuries or in some cases millennia of purpose-breeding. Wolves may be considered smarter than domestic dogs (domestic wolves?), but don't forget that they're the same species.

well... i don't know. you look at house cats... they are smart... they refuse to give a crap about most people. but dogs need affection and are willing to work for it.

but if you look at lions, they're extremely smart. they work in groups to take care of their babies and to hunt and protect each other.

on the other hand you look at wolves and they do the same thing.

and both cats and dogs have been looked at as gods or goddesses sometime or another.

but i'd have to say cats. they've adapted more. and there is still a fish version.

You probably could breed a domestic cat to herd, but don't confuse the cat with the lion. They are two different species. In fact, they aren't even in the same genus or subfamily.

Nor do lions herd; they are scatter hunters - herds of zebra, for example, confuse them.

Dogs are much smarter than cats.

To all the faggots that keep saying that CATS CAN OPEN DOORS LOL, did you ever stop to think that JUST MAYBE that's because their front appendages are much more dexterous than a dog's? A dog mostly just uses its mouth for all manipulating, a cat uses its mouth and paws. Saying that a cat is smarter than a dog because it can open doors is like saying that George Bush is smarter than Stephen Hawking because he can open doors...extreme example, but I think you get what I'm saying. Don't confuse physical ability with intelligence.

Having said that, I had a dog that could open a door once. So there.

I've been around cats and dogs my whole life, and based on my experience I can say with certainty that dogs are more intelligent than cats.
>> Anonymous
>>258864
>>258804

The fact that they are capable of LEARNING to open doors by operating a latch is a sign of intelligence as cats don't innately jump into the air and attempt to grab onto small fixed objects whenever they find themselves blocked by a solid vertical rectangle. That's like saying a parrot's ability to open a cage door by unscrewing a bolt or unwinding a twist-tie, as some do, isn't a sign of intelligence just because the bird is physically capable of it. It's a nonsensical argument.

I don't recall any posts stating that cats are more intelligent than dogs simply because they're capable of opening doors or that dogs are incapable of doing the same, either.

More dogs could LEARN to open doors if they were more physically suited to it. That's the point I'm making. If they had the same kind of forelegs and forepaws as cats, they'd be opening doors all the time.
>> Anonymous
>>258908
We had a dog, retriever mutt of some kind, that wanted nothing else in life other than the ability to open doors. We had to put a lanyard around the refrigerator handles.

Luckily we had doors with old brass circular knobs and fat, sticky latches - impossible to open by anything without fingers and opposable thumbs. Basically our dog's method of knocking was the WHUMP of putting her front legs on the wall, followed by the rattling of a knob being pulled out - or else the frantic scratching of a dog trying to use its front legs to turn a knob over.
>> Anonymous
>>258908
The same could be said for why cats don't fill the roles of 'sled cat' or 'seeing eye cat.' Because they are not physically built for these tasks, they were never selectively bred to perform them. That doesn't mean that they, as a species, aren't capable of them, they have just never been bred or trained to do them.

Most researchers in the field of Comparative Cognition have abandoned the notion that some animals are more intelligent than other animals. Even still, some animals, including great apes, crows, dolphins, dogs, elephants, cats, pigs, rats, and parrots are typically thought by laypeople as intelligent in ways that some other species of animal are not. For example, crows are attributed with human-like intelligence in the folklore of many cultures. A number of recent survey studies have demonstrated the consistency of these rankings between people in a given culture and indeed to a considerable extent across cultures (e.g. Nakajima et al., 2002). A common image is the scala naturae, the ladder of nature on which animals of different species occupy successively higher rungs, with humans typically at the top. Comparative psychologists have sought in vain for ways of providing an objective underpinning for these essentially subjective and anthropocentric judgements. Part of the difficulty is the lack of agreement about what we mean by intelligence even in humans (it obviously makes a big difference whether language is considered as essential for intelligence, for example). As a result, most scientists studying animal cognition regard questions about which animals are the most intelligent as vacuous.[citation needed] A more fruitful approach has been to recognise that different animals may have different kinds of cognitive processes, which are better understood in terms of the ways in which they are cognitively adapted to their different ecological niches, than by positing any kind of hierarchy. This is the approach taken by the most comprehensive reference text of animal cognition

On the other hand my step brother's dog is probably the smartest animal I've ever known. With very little training he takes and learns new commands incredibly quickly. When my step brother left and the dog moved in he learned to respond and act depending on the number of times I snap my fingers within a week. twice means to come, once means to go about business as usual, three to go pee.

Both dogs and cats are smart and stupid.

Cat's are smart enough to be embarrassed when they know they've done something ungraceful, like tripping over something. Dogs are not.
>> Anonymous
>>260279
Dogs have been bred for centuries to read human gesturs and commants and be obedient without questioning. That's not intelligence, it's just inherited programmability and slave mentality. Nobody has bred cats for obedience, so they always consider what's in their best interests first. Because of this, the smartest cats esily become a nuisance, because they'll figure out how to do stuff on their own and only do what they want.
>> Anonymous
>>260309
This argument keeps coming up. I'm starting to get tired of it. They were bred originally because the people responsible for breeding them saw potential in these animals. Obviously, no potential was seen in cats as anything more than a pet, so they weren't bred for any specific purpose.

Breeding is nothing more than trying to refine a characteristic that is already there. Dogs being bred for centuries is more of a testament to how adaptable and intelligent they are than anything.

Regardless, this entire argument is flawed. Ranking intelligence among animals, as a previous poster said, is an act in futility. You cannot easily compare them.
>> Anonymous
>>260309
But it is! Their adaptability is the pinnacle of intelligence! Cats aren't equipped to deal with situations outside of what they are hardwired to do. In other words cats are independent and instinctual, which requires less learning and more use of the tools given to them (agility, dexterity, night vision etc etc).

Dogs on the other hand are hardwired to adapt to any situation. The very fact that they can understand commands from another species of animals is remarkable. This originates from wolves learning and communicating with humans.

I keep seeing the fact that cats are independent popping up as a reason they are more intelligent, and I do not understand why. This actually leads to the contrary. Humans are not independent animals, we need to be in groups, our whole existence and intelligence stems from our co-dependence on each other, our pack mentality if you will. Most other animals that live in packs and in small societies also show great signs of intelligence.

In short, dependence on others isn't a sign of weakness or stupidity, it is actually a sign of great intelligence and an evolutionary survival tool.

I've always though that Cats were smarter, while dogs are undoubtedly more receptive to training. I've seen someone with "a dog that can do multiplication", but really all they did was train it to bark x number of times when shown a specific picture (a picture of 3 x 5, for example. If shown something it hadn't seen before like 20 x 3, it probably wouldn't have done anything).

The "cats opening the doors by themselves" example is a good example of learning and understanding concepts, though biased due to physical constraints on the dog. A simple game that I noticed back in grade school at a friends house, who had a Black Lab and a Siamese cat, was the point game. Simply put the animal in front of you and point at something near by. The cat would invariably look at me, then at where I was pointing, while the dog would look at my hand.
>> Anonymous
I had a schnauzer that understood what I meant when I told her to go to a certain room of the house, the backyard, or the front yard and wait for me. She would get the bathroom mixed-up with the front yard though, but that's understandable since that's what we meant when we asked if she had to "go bathroom".

How the fuck we can compare two different species and say that species x is more "smarter" than species y.

Dog is an pack animal, cat is not, dog's cant exactly jump straight upwards like cat's can. I dont exactly see point of comparing totally two different species between each other since theyre not even evolved from the same species.

In other words, you can't exactly start comparing numbers and letters, or elephants and butterflye's and say that bears or butterflies are better because of reasong x.

If you think about it, (and I'm sure you won't, being a catfag, thus, incapable of thought), catfags are more like furfags, since they fag up any animal board they're in by posting multiple threads of identical looking cats. Also, much like furfags, they continuously post the same pictures over and over again simply to troll the board.

"'Ah!' said the Cat, listening. 'That is a very foolish Dog.' And he went back through the Wet Wild Woods waving his wild tail, and walking by his wild lone. But he never told anybody."

You may be too young to remember, but a while back 7chan actually had a /dog/ board in addition to a /cat/ board and an /ani/ board. Long story short, it didn't last long because it attracted furfags, none of which were of the cat variety. The /cat/ board on the other hand was relatively clean up until 7chan's recent demise.

>> I like both cats and dogs, okay guys? KZN
Personally, I think this is a stupid debate.

However, I'll give you my opinion.

I believe the two species are generally equal in intelligence. They ways each species shows it and the ways we perceive it are different, but just because cats are not social and obedient does not mean they are less intelligent than dogs; likewise, just because dogs will obey you and tend to be more socially dependent than cats does not mean they are less intelligent than cats. They are DIFFERENT.

That being said, intelligence in this case needs to be measured by the individual animal, not the species as a whole. There are a lot of really stupid dogs, and there are a lot of really smart dogs. There are a lot of really stupid cats, and there are a lot of really smart cats.

Case in point, my dog is smarter than my cat, I think, but he is not smarter than all cats, nor is he dumber than all cats. There are also a lot of dogs smarter than him, and a lot of dogs dumber than him.

But to those talking about cats opening doors, dogs can do it too. For example, I once locked myself out of the house. My dog had apparently learned how to operate one of the doors, because he let me back in when I told him "Open the door."
This particular door was of the sliding variety, and the locking mechanism was a wooden stick placed in the door's track. From watching us, he learned to first paw out the lock, then jump up and push the door to the left.

Likewise, my cousin's dog can open doorhandles with her mouth. However, I've seen dogs that won't push open an ajar door. I really think it depends on the individual.
>> Anonymous
>>263039

I don't think the problem is that the animals are different but rather that human expectations for them are different, we treat dogs totally different and teach them different things, but it's not like cats can't learn and be obedient, when they want a cat in a hollywood film they go to companies who train all sorts of different animals to do things on cue.

But as a society we have decided "cats get to lounge around and be cute and shit in a box filled with sand" and "dogs do what we say, when we say it, and shit outside"
