TLDR Our beloved doggy has bitten the person it was most loyal to. What should we do with him? Professional training is not an option.

Help.
When my mom started feeling the empty nest syndrome, she adopted a dog, Itchy. He was a little protective of his house. Whenever someone he didn't know would come in, he would bark at them for about 5 minutes until they sat down. When they got up, he would still be agitated but he never bit anyone. He turned out to be very smart. Itchy learned so many words and phrases. We were really impressed.

However, my mom has 2 daughters, so she felt like she needed two dogs. So she got a second dog, Earl (pictured). Earl was a better lap dog, seeing as how he's part chihuahua(sp). Itchy wasn't isn't quite as compact, but he can still sit with you on the couch. However, my mom seemed to start appreciating Earl more. I don't know why, I liked Itchy alot more because he was so smart.

Anyway, tonight I was playing a little game Itchy likes to play, where you put your hand out like you're going to take his toy, and he runs to the other side of you, reach, run, etc.etc. However, when I actually wanted him to give it to me he wouldn't. My mom tried to get it from him (he loves and protects her, so he always does what she says), and instead he got very defensive and growled. He ended up biting her.

What should we do with him? I love him and don't want to give him up, but we can't afford any type of training. Should we take him to a shelter?

Now that I re-read, I'll say that I mentioned Earl at all because I thought that perhaps Itchy was feeling neglected?

Dog wanted to keep his toy, you let him keep his toy. It's your dumbass mother's fault that she couldn't read the dog.

What the hell OP?!

Just because you play a certain game with a dog doesn't mean it's always going to react the same way. If the dog was obviously angry at you why the fuck take the toy of it? Who cares if you wanted it, its the dogs! You mum deserved to get bitten! The dog has already come from a shelter, who knows what it's been through, you could have acted like a past owner it hated.

TLDR; keep the fucking dog, don't be a retard again.

Growing up, whenever I or other kids swung on the swing at the park, my retriever and sometimes a few other dogs of various breeds would attempt to grab your shoelaces and drag you off the swing. Kind of like tug of war.

Sometimes the dog would miss and bite you instead of the shoe. And was anything wrong with that? You play rough house with dogs, they'll end up biting you. I mean really, if that's too much for your mom, maybe she should get a goldfish or a plant she can talk to and prune.

OP here, you're all the idiots.
It wasn't playing a game, it was being spoiled. It's our dog. It's a pet. I could understand if it bit me or someone else, but my mother is the one who took it from the hellish shelter that it was locked in and gave it a home. There is no reason for it to bite her hand like that.

I've been gone for so long because I just got back from the hospital. She has cracked tendons and her pinky is broken. It doesn't matter what you say now, because there's no way we can keep a dog who will act like that to the one person who loved it and cared for it the most.

Dogs shouldn't be taught to own things. As the pack leader (pssst, that's you) you own everything and have the right to take anything from the dog.

If you let the dog have possesions, it will end up walking all over you and subsequently developing agressive behaviour later on. In this case, biting.

This is why most professional trainers discourage letting dogs have free access to toys and food 100% of the time.

OP, this is a one-off event and you shouldn't be thinking of sending him off to a shelter already, that smells like irresponsibility.

Let the dog know that he cannot have his toys all the time and that you have the right to take them off of him. This means you have to absolutely stop playing tug-of-war games with him. try fetch or chase games.

Remember, consistency, try not to send mixed messages with your dog. He cannot be allowed to play tug-of-war games and then when you feel it's time for him stop playing you take it off of him. He cannot see the difference between play and when play should end. This confuses the dog and causes anxiety.

Not a troll. You're all obviously tree hugging morons. There's no way in hell if you loved a dog half as much as she does that it could just bite you like that and have it all be okay. She bought the dog all kinds of shit that she didn't even buy me so there is no way it can react that way and be tolerated. This must be why the dog was at the shelter in the first place.

If you guys think the dog is so goddamn angelic, come get it. It's adorable.

Thanks, Caesar. The dog doesn't have free reign on food. He doesn't really care about his toys until a person wants them. It's not even like we were going to stop playing with him, my mom just wanted to throw it instead of playing the tease/chase game.

Thank you for not being a fucking moron and thinking that we should just let the dog have it. These people are idiots for thinking the dog owns everything.

The dog was spoiled thats all. They bite because some people out there used to keep him like he was a humand child, not a dog.

I don't have a lot of experience with dog training myself but I know with my childhood dog the rule was that if he ever drew blood he was out the door. If he bit, we'd punish/re-train depending on the situation (dogs play-bite so most of the time if they 'bite' you, it's not malicious at all). The thing with the drawing blood was something like they'd get a taste for it (being predators, they like the taste of raw meat) and be motivated to do it again. Never had experience with that coming true though, that was just the theory.

That just sounds stupid... I wrestle with my dog all the time which includes letting him mouth my hands and arms and he's drawn blood before but it never turned him into a wild-eyed killing machine. In fact, I've never heard of a domestic animal turning into a blood-hungry wolf throwback overnight after wounding one of it's owners.

To OP: maybe the dog needs actual training instead of "professional training". You could train it yourself if you bought a book or looked up appropriate methods on the net or you could take it to Petco or another similar pet shop which has cheap basic training courses just to get the basics down with someone who is moderately knowledgeable.

Honestly, I hope you have already done this because otherwise you and you're family are far too cheap, lazy and stupid to be allowed to own one dog much less two. Training is a necessary step towards establishing yourself as the pack leader and setting boundaries for your dog's behavior (which they need, they don't mystically know how to act around people).

I suspect that your animals are kept like veal by an overprotective mother who probably feeds them ten times what they need and babies them when she should be establishing some kind of order in the house. I've seen the same situation with friends and family and all you end up with is a disobedient obese animal instead of the loving companion you want.

Train, feed appropriately, walk the dog, and make sure it socializes with other dogs or I guarantee you'll be bitten again.

You are the ones to blame for allowing him to think that being over-protective is acceptable. A dog will protect it's pack, but there are rules within that pack. YOU - as it's owner and leader - are it's alpha in that pack.

You have failed to teach this dog that it is NOT acceptable to behave in anyway but completely loving and respectful to you.

You and your family have no one to blame but yourselves for his biting your mother. Smacking, yelling and hitting the dog will not teach it a lesson. Nor will ignoring him or any other sorts of punishment. By shunning him or treating him/her as a "bad dog" - you only serve to confuse him further and thus the cycle will continue.

Training is ALWAYS an option. You just have to do it properly. Here's a tip: A comfortable dog, is an untrainable dog. (Think about it - if the dog ALWAYS has food, water and a warm home, why should it ever do anything it doesn't want to? There are no consequences for it not to.)

You need to talk to a professional about aggressive and protective behavior, because those two go hand in hand. Be a responsible owner and correct what you've neglected to do in the past.

OP, you asked us for help and advice, then you got pissy when you heard our opinion; just because it didn't fit into what you wanted. What the fuck? Learn to deal with other's opinions and ideas instead of calling us all idiots, and making excuses to NOT take our advice and follow YOUR advice. Don't fucking ask for advice, then. If you wanted to take it to a shelter with no other options in mind, then go do that.
However, having a dog and getting rid of it on the first occasion it does something bad is just ridiculous. If you love it, shouldn't you want to work with it? Are all of the years you put into that dog entirely worthless once it does something unexpected?

OP is either troll or just... You were playing with his toy, getting him all worked up, then suddenly you wanted the playtime to stop. Dogs dont have an on/off switch you know, let him calm down first.

If you don't learn some shit about dogs and dog training its just a matter of time before your other dog does something similar.

And stop with the stupid love shit, the dog can love you sure but if he thinks he is the alpha he will still bite when you try to take his toy, just like a parent will yell at a kid trying to get into the liquor cabinet...

Some ppl should just get a cat instead.

PART 1
This is probably a troll, but I love animals and wont risk one being fucked over because someone can't google 'dog training'.
I'm basically going to give you a lo-down on basic dog training (all that seemed relevant, anyway). Note: This is LONG. TL;DR: Use google. To think you’d need a personal trainer in this situation is just stupid. All that’s wrong with your dog is that you’ve neglected to teach him basic dicipline. That’ll make it a lot harder, but better than having a maladjusted dog.

Dogs, particularly a dog from a SHELTER - who knows what the fuck his previous owners might have done to him - are NOT children.
Heck, even CHILDREN don't understand off the bat that love deserves respect. Most kids are shit heads to their parents a lot of the time. If all you do is love your dog and expect it to fall in line, you don’t know what you’re doing. He probably thinks he’s the leader of the pack because of that.
You have to TRAIN the dog. Teach him when the play stops. Teach him when he can't have his toys. Teach him not to overreact so much when he sees strangers. Don't just ignore it and tune it out.
These aren't difficult things to train him to do. They take patience, yeah, but ultimately it's pretty simple, and if you're dog's as smart as you say he is, he should pick it up quickly enough assuming he doesn't have a traumatizing background. Remember, a dog's only as good as his owner.
>> Anonymous
PART 2
Now, second, you say she showered him with love and toys? Well guess what? Despite your high and mighty 'dogs shouldn't own things' speech, you've fucking spoiled your dog, and now he thinks he’s the leader. They don't understand 'oh, this person is giving me all these lovely things, I'm so grateful, I’ll do anything they say', they just think 'hey, look, some nifty toy has appeared on my bed! How cool! It's mine! I must protect it with my life!'
You have to make sure your dog understands the gift is coming from her, and never give him too many at once.

And finally, if a dog's growling and acting defensive of something, you NEVER try and force it from him. That shouldn't suggest you shouldn't discipline him, of course, but you're a fucking retard if you stick anything attached to you anywhere near that dog's mouth. I couldn't give you a textbook explanation on what you SHOULD do, since it varies from dog to dog, but you should really have been training him in this the second you got him. Here's a bit of an article online that explains it well. This is a VERY important thing to teach your dog from and early age, or as early as you get them, so they know not to be aggressive about food or toys:

>Practice taking objects from him, toys, food, etc. Start by trading the object for a yummy treat. Then give back the object back to him. Get him used to your hands around his food bowl. Start by adding yummy treats while he is eating. Work up to removing his food bowl while eating to add the treats, then replacing the bowl for him to resume eating. You can eventually work up to actually slipping your hand in to remove food while he is eating.

Here's the whole guide. It's pretty good:
http://www.snowdogs.com.au/Reference/Training/tabid/71/Default.aspx
>> Anonymous
PART 3
Also, keep in mind you really only have a second or two after the dog's misbehaved to correct him, or he won't be able to associate the punishment with what he did wrong and he'll just think you're being mean to him for no reason.

Now, about the barking. Since this is barking in defense rather than boredom/etc, I'm not sure how accurate this information is, since this is just from personal experience and I've never really known any terribly defensive dogs, but it can't hurt: if you're trying to get him to stop barking, don't shout over him, or he'll just think you're joining in (this applies to any time he's barking, for pretty much whatever reason).
Just wait until he's quiet, say clearly 'quiet' (and it also helps if you make a distinctive hand sign to accompany the word) and give him a treat. Do this in the one session for as long as it takes for him to understand the word, and before long, you should be able to say it mid-bark and get a result.

As for his agressiveness towards strangers specifically, here's a good article that covers a lot of different ground:
http://www.ehow.com/how_2214132_stop-dog-barking-strangers.html

You know what? You can pretty much find anything you need to know on google. Professional trainer my ass. All you need is an internet connection. Any other problems you have, just google it and you should find something right away.
>> Anonymous
PART 4 (final)
And honestly, from what I've read, your dog doesn't seem to me to be dangerous at all. Yes, he sounds like he really hurt your mother, but if a 6 year old accidentally fired a gun at a friend because his father left it out and loaded, would you demand the kid be sent to jail for being dangerous?
Your mother made a mistake and got severely bitten for it. Hopefully you guys take that as a wake up call to better train your dog, rather than get rid of him.
A dog can only really be considered dangerous if he attacks unprovoked, and does it repeatedly.
And please, make sure your mother treats them as equals. Particularly since she's favouring the new dog over the old one. That's absolutely terrible for Itchy. If it were the other way around, at least Earl wouldn't know if he was missing anything, whereas Itchy's almost been replaced.

I agree with this Anon. Very good advice.

Especially about how OP's mother favors Earl. That's awful. Dogs can get jealous just as easily as humans can, and it can turn out to be a problem, either between the dogs, or between the neglected dog and the owner. Please, OP. Tell your mother to give them equal attention and love, and don't be a fucking retard and give up the dog because it bit ONCE.
