Well-
When my brother went to- mmm, I'm thinking Thailand but it could have been Malaysia, since I've been to neither it's easy to get confused- he brought back an elephant skin purse for my mother (complete with sustainable harvest certificates etc, customs didn't bat an eyelash so stop yapping) Over there elephants are treated in much the same way as any other livestock. They're working beasts, but they occasionally become food, leather and other objects that you would make from animal products. It's not a great issue, as in that country, elephants are domestic animals.
