I need a new cage for future rats. But all the ones that I've found that have a sliding bottom(i'm really sick of having to take an entire cage off the bottom each time i clean the cage), have paint on them. I don't want them chewing off the paint. Whats a good way to remove paint from a cage besides sand papering? Or can anyone recommend some cages that have a slide out tray at the bottom(without wire for the bottom)?

how about you buy a real pet?

use a 5 gallon bucket, and dump them in the bathtub to clean it

Rats are real pets. Better than a stupid hamster, mouse, gerbils, etc. In fact, they're probably the best small mammal pet there is.

Yes. Rats are awesome pets. I have seven myself...They keep me entertained daily :3 They're kept in this. It's a Ferret Nation model 142. You can buy them from Ferret.com for about $156 plus 6.99 shipping(yes, even for this 100lb thing). If you get girl rats you may need to modify it by adding hardware cloth(basically wire mesh-- coated is better, as it won't rust and will be less likely to cut the ratties). There are also some very good cages at martinscages.com. Go here: http://floridarat.com/phpBB2/ for real advice for rats. ;] Best of luck!

Oh, another thing: this cage is awesome because you can take out the floor pans, and remove the shelves and ramps completely and clean the plastic very easily. The doors also open fully on both levels. There ramp to the 2nd story can flip and lock up, in case you need to separate them for any reason.

Clearly you have never owned a rat. They're intelligent and sociable...probably more so than you in both of those aspects.

Girls are smaller than boys, and they may be able to slip through the bars in the Ferret Nation, because the spacing is 1" x 5". You can maybe see from the picture that it's a bit bigger than "standard" wire bar spacing, which is usually 1/2" x 1/2" or 1/2" x 1". Hope this helps. :]

This isn't to say that it will definitely need modification, but if your girls-to-be are still young, or are just small in general, it may. They could probably get out as adults, too, if they really wanted to. It all comes down to them 1) discovering that they CAN get out, and 2) deciding that they WANT to get out. Hehe.
