Fish interactions Anonymous
Hey /an/

I have a question regarding the setup of my fish tank. I have a ten gallon tank (with a filter, light and all that good stuff) that is inhabited by 2 bettas and a gold fish. I have the fish separated with dividers with the gold fish in the middle. The bettas and goldfish interact with one another through the dividers, the betta sometimes puffing up in response to the goldfish swimming back and forth along the divider. Is this okay for them? Or am I stressing them out?

Thx!

read up on goldfish, they're really dirty and can get very, very large. if you wanna try and keep them together, definitely keep your filter well-maintained and maybe get periodic water quality tests done. some pet stores will offer them for free (i know petsmart did).. i'd keep an eye on your ammonia levels, watch that you don't overfeed and compound the problem, etc

1. remove the gold fish and either get him his own tank (larger than a 10, look up bruce the oranda to get an idea)
2. move the divider into the middle of the tank

also, goldfish are cold water fish, bettas are tropical fish. they require warmer water. in your current setup, someone's gonna die fairly quickly

Betta regards flashy and colourfull fish as rivals.
The goldfish is a red towel to him.

Also, Male Bettas generally don't react well to each other. The only time I've seen male bettas put up with each other or other fish for that matter is in a 55 gallon tank with lots of floating plants for them to hide in. They are usually mid to high tank level fish. This being said, if you had a taller tank you could easily keep goldfish, tropicals or bottom feeders in a tank with a single betta.
