hey /an/

my fish seems to go to the surface and open his mouth alot. to me it looks like he wants food, but i feed him a pinch of food three or four times per day.

am i not feeding him enough or am i getting the wrong message?

pic related, as he is my fishy, Tom Hanks

I think he loves you and wants kisses.

prob more than enough food. 2 should be ample for one fish?
>> Anonymous
might also be that the water isn't being circulated properly and there isn't enough oxygen in it

Sounds like your fish is gulping air because the water is oxygen poor. Are you running a filter? If you are you can oxygenate the water more by lower the water level a bit, or raising the filter (stick a pencil under it if it is the kind that hangs off the side) to create more splash.

If you don't have a filtration system and circulating water, don't expect the fish to live very long.

oh, and you are feeding your fish WAY too much. Twice a day with a day or two of NO food at all is plenty .

hey, thanks. i do have a filter, i didnt know the splash was important.

an airpump might help too.

Especially at night, if you happen to have real plants in your tank, an airpump is a good idea.
Reason: Plants consume oxygen at night, making the water even less breathable for fish.

i don't have any real plants in my tank, but i guess there isn't much oxygen in there.

Actually, I think goldfish are labyrinth(sp?)fish, so they can gulp air from the surface to get enough oxygen, you dont necessarily HAVE to have a pump to oxygenate the water, you can if you'd like, but it's fine without one...thats why you can keep them in simple bowls

my goldfishies always lived a LOT longer with some pump action

ok, whoever said plants consume oxygen is a dumbass!
jesus christ, in grade school you learn plants MAKE oxygen and CONSUME CO2.

Why hello Mr. Dumbass. Yes plants produce oxygen, but that's during the DAYTIME during PHOTOSYNTHESIS (say it with me now, photo-syn-the-sis in the day-time).

During the NIGHTTIME when there is no light, they go through what is called RESPIRATION (come on, "res-pir-a-tion". Good, there you go.)

During respiration, they oxidize substrates to produce ATP (energy). This makes them take O2 in, and EMIT CO2.

so if you camp in a forest at night you die of suffocation? gotta remember hiking daytime only!

There's enough oxygen for everyone.
Seriously

Plant production of CO2 at night is significantly less compared to the amount of O2 generated in the day.

Exactly, and if you go anywhere near a desert or ocean then you die of suffocation because plants are the only source of oxygen on Earth.

Oxygen, like any other gases, will immediately diffuse to homogeneously fill any shape or volume of space that is made available to them. GB/2 church.

Step 1: Identify species of fish.

Step 2: Determine if fish has a Labyrinth organ:

Step 3: A. Your fish is fine.
B. Your fish is not fine.

airstone. roflmao. yeah those are awesome, plus plants or algae, but algae kinda sucks. get a little pack of plant bulbs for the aquarium at wal-mart and watch those toni's grow. peace

heres an example..think of mangroves in anoxic mud.. they have snorkle like roots that gather oxygen because there isnt any in the soil.. plants need some oxygen too.
