My cat knocked mine off its shelf the day after I got it.

Yeah, it died. Fun times.

But no, they're kinda fun. They get dull after a while, though.

Once, we lost ours in the house. We found it a week later. Still alive and everything.

Our cats found them the most amusing.

I have 6 of them. They're expensive to take care of.

They really, really stink. The aquatic type are extremely useful as reef tank janitors, though. If you must have one, use coconut fibre substrate, not gravel, unless you like salmonella and stench of death.

My friend tried raising em twice and both hermit crabs died. They were fine the day they got home and into the little crab kit but then they wouldn't eat and died. Maybe it had something to do with his water. Anyway, he gave up on it

I've had like 12 or so of the little guys. While amusing, they fucking reek. Like honestly, my whole house smelled like death and rotten meat the whole time they were around. As a pet, you really can't do shit with them. The good news is that they're highly cannibalistic so you can watch them fight to the death. While it sounds cruel, its just nature at work as they had enough food and water to eat all day long. They're bloodthirsty little bastards. Also they're ugly as fuck when you can see their hind legs and their tail when they come out of their shells. As pets, I'd give them maybe a 4/10. As gladiators, I'd give them 7/10. Pic is one of them without a shell, showing how ugly and misshapen they are.

I've had lots, they need pretty specific care to life for a while. Lots of humidity for one thing, otherwise they gradually suffocate and die. You can have a community of them and not have any fights break out so long as you provide extra shells for them to switch with.

As for the stink, just let them soak a little in lukewarm water or mist them daily and it shouldn't be a problem~

I bet they would fucking hate you for giving them that shell only.
As well as be weirded out.

they can be pretty fragile.
Despite getting a by-the-book crabitat one of mine just started refusing to wear his shell and just died this week.

The other two seem to be doing fine, but it's a tad bit annoying to see that one go.
