Hey /an/ I just picked up a year and a half old german shepherd, and she stinks, was wonderin if it would be okay to use regular shampoo(head and shoulders) that way she atleast doesnt stink.

doing it once won't hurt her, just don't put it on her head so she doesn't get it in her eyes

It would be most ideal for you to use something like "Johnson's Bay Shampoo". I don't doubt you would have such an item stashed away, somewhere, in your little cupbaord of secret perversions...

And if by some chance you don't, it's in the babycare aisle of any supermarket.

The vets my family and I have asked in the past have told us that washing dogs with shampoo usually isn't necessary, considering they clean themselves. But, if they stink, you can probably find these things called "bath wipes" somewhere, like a pet store. We use those on our German shepherd (who smells really bad at the moment, too... I should use one on him). Just taking a brush to him sometimes helps, too.

If you really want to use shampoo, definitely use something very gentle and definitely wash it out very, very thoroughly. The dog we had before the shepherd almost ended up dying long before he really did because of an infection caused from not washing out the shampoo in his fur. Unfortunately, I can't explain how that caused an infection.

Your vet is full of shit, and I recommend you punch the fucker in his bloody asshole!

Baby shampoo is fine. Also, as a side note, if she gets sprayed by a skunk, the best thing to use is blue (mint?) Scope mouthwash.

I used tomato sauce on mine when that happened. That cut the smell a lot, but we still didn't let her in the house for a week.

People shampoo is fine too. If you just dilute it with some water. Cut it to like one part shampoo and four parts water and that should make her smell better.

Well whatever works. But we've never had any luck with tomato sauce/paste/etc. The Scope has worked the best, on two different dogs and even one cat. Of course, same thing applies as with the shampoo, don't get it in her eyes, etc.

Baking soda, hydrogen peroxide and a touch of soap work well on Skunk smell too. So does Febreeze. (Which I use on my dog oddly enough because he cries when we try to bathe him.)
