my family is debating getting a shar-pei puppy Anonymous
/r information on shar-peis and their energy/space requirements. They look too roly-poly to need lots of running space, but they are deceptively cute little guys. What about as they get older? We live in a city, so we need to get a dog that doesn't need a big backyard.

they are very high maintenance and prone to skin conditions like eczema and dermititus. You have to clean those folds of skin really well or all sorts of muck builds up in there. "a face like an uncircumcised penis" is what the techs at the vet say.

i had a shar pei growing up and they are absolutely fantastic. the skin can develope problems as well as the ears but the care is definately worth it. they are very easy to train, great with children and loyal family dogs. just make sure the dog doesnt' witness someone discipline a child or he'll "protect" the kid from a spankin.

great, but what about space?

they don't need a lot. of course a puppy is always gonna be hyper but after about 1 1/2 yrs old they will be very easy going and the space needed is minimal. just a daily walk and some mental stimulation should be enough.

Getting the eyelids tacked can be pretty important for some, and more then likely should be done. Though it can suck if you get a shar-pei that constantly trys to tear them out when you aren't looking. :(

Picking the right food is pretty important as well, they can react pretty badly to a lot of food, so find whats right and stick with it. Changing it will just cause problems. All that skin just makes it far to easy for the dog to just gnaw any part that itches raw.

I've found shar-pei's to be pretty easy going dogs...after the puppy stage of course...mine have always loved to play, but more often then not will just sleep unless I goad them into it.

Really despite some problems, they have been my favorite kind of dog for years now and will continue to be.

My sharpei is a fucking great dog.

She never had any eyelid problems and never had any skin problems beyond when we first got her (the people who had her weren't taking good care of her at all..after we washed her once in a while it cleared up and has been fine). She also eats anything, dogfood, catfood, etc.

Sweetest dog ever...she barks when someone she doesn't know comes up to our house, but in the 3-4 years I've had her I don't think I've ever seen her angry. She doesn't even fight back if another dog tries to fuck with her..I have to run out and kick it in the face. Also great with kids. She also goes over into the forest next to my house to poop so it ain't in my yard, lmao.

Only problem I've ever had was she loves to chew whatever she gets her paws on, slippers, shoes, etc. Also if it's paper they scatter it everywhere.

That's just my experiences though...every dog is different.

op here

Thanks guys. My husband and I were aware of genetic skin problems and the eye problem with the very very wrinkled ones. We're not going to get a purebred, so hopefully the added genetic variation will give our guy better skin. We just didn't know what to expect and didn't want to keep a puppy locked up in our house/200 sq foot back yard if it was going to want to run.

If you regularly go for a (long) walk with your dog, it doesn't need much space at all. You could let your dog carry bags on it's back if it's very energetic.

All the Shar-peis I've come across were fairly good tempered. Then again, it was only two, so I don't know how that speaks for them. These two also weren't exceptionally active.

If you're buying from a breeder, beware of amyloidosis.

And hip dysplasia.

But really look out for amyloidosis. It'll kill your dog no matter what.

Why would you want an inbred freakshow?
Also: this whole backyard thing is completely overrated. I live in the city with a (white) german shepherd and as long as you have time to give your dog the attention it needs you don't need a backyard. I think backyards are one of the reasons dogs are bored and in a bad physical condition. I mean, how much stimulation & exercise can one get on a backyard?

Honestly, about 60-70% of Shar-pei mixes I've seen have skin problems. Don't think that getting a mix will help it, because there's a high risk that it won't.
