How does /an/ feel about Chow Chows?

I love them, they're the most loyal and loving dogs and the perfect watch dogs since they will just sit there and bark instead of attacking people.

Then comes the wrench in the head! Then all they do is lay there and bleed!

Isn't Chow Chow something like Nom Nom in English?

Anyhow, I haven't tasted one, so I wouldn't know.

I used to have two Chow/G.Shepard mixes.

The purple tongue is lulzy.

They seem pretty adorable, speaking as someone who's never owned a dog. What are they like in terms of energy? And frankly I'd want a guard dog that didn't just sit and bark, I'd want him to go for the jugular.

I like them... I once knew a chow chow/golden mix who was very sweet but had this weird habit of eating bees...it was kind of fucked up.

When I was a kid, our neighbours had one, really lovely dog, very friendly. It was pretty old and slow, and it used to take itself for a walk around the block, they just let it out the front door, it did one lap, always in the same direction, then came straight home and sat on the porch until they let it in.

Watch dogs are dogs that alert you to someone's presence. Guard dogs do something about it. Plenty of tiny yappy dogs make great "watch" dogs.

I've known two different chows with two different, friendly owners.

Both dogs were very friendly to their owners and vicious to strangers. As in, must be restrained. One bit the owner's friend (who has met the chow before) and required 15 stitches and this was without provoking.

THEY ARE DELICIOUS YOU MUST MARINADE THEM IN SESAME AND PEANUT OIL THEN ADD SPICY SRIRIACHA

until they mistake company for intruders and you have some cops to answer to.

my chows were always good with visitors. they would be more reserved than usual and just kind of sit in a corner and stare, but they never attacked anyone.

They're great dogs until they go to the groomers. Then they bite. Assholes.

Especially with nails.

Years ago I was house sitting for my mom and a neighbor dropped by asking if I could help her get this strange dog away from her fence. So I said sure and walked to her place. This dog obviously wanted friends and was sitting near her fence wagging his tail and sniffing through the slits in the fence and smelling the lady's dog. He looked malnourished and had no tags.

I went up to the dog and he started licking my hand. After a few minutes of me petting him I got up and he followed me all the way back to my mom's house. I put my mom's American Eskimo on a leash and let the new dog in. Delilah was iffy at first but she quickly took a liking to this new dog. A couple days later I took the dog to the vet, paid for his shots, registration and chip and set another date for a neutering. I also learned that the dog is a half Chow half Gold Lab and he's around 1 year old.

A week goes by and my mom comes home, I take her to the living room and ask her to sit down and close her eyes. I bring in the new dog and tell her to open her eyes. She instantly fell in love with him and named him Sampson. So now she has a Sampson and Delilah.

She's had him for over 5 years now and is one of the best dogs she's ever had. She's never had a problem with him being mean or biting anyone. Although I think Delilah had something to do with that, she kept her ALPHA DOG status and would nip his paws if he did something she didn't like. She's no near his size and she's pushing 16 years now. It's quite a funny sight.

when i was younger i had a full-blood Chow named Magnum that my dad had gotten from my mother when he graduated high school.
as i grew up, he got older, sired litter after litter of pups and made many friends.

but he didn't like negroes. at all. one day i was in the living room and heard him barking up a storm, so i go outside and i watch him latch onto a negroes hand as he tries to pick him up off the ground and over the fence. now magnum at this time was about 80 lbs of muscle, and he bit clean through the guys hand. he tried to sue but he lost because he was injured in the attempted abduction of my dog.

so a few months go by. my family and myself go out to watch fireworks on the 4th of July. we leave and come back a few hours later. we go to let Magnum in because he was a tad afraid of fireworks, and i noticed there was quite a large bit of blood on the back patio. my father told everyone to get inside and he got his gun and went outside to see what was wrong.

it seems that our neighbors across the alley tried to get Magnum and he bit one of them and so they shot him a .45 in the chest. he bled out pretty fast and crawled under the porch and died in the dark. my dad bundled up his body in his rug and buried him in the countryside. then he got his gun and shot up the back of their house when they left.

i never had another chow after that.

Grandparents had 2 3/4 Chow, 1/4 Aussie Shepherd. Great dogs, one took on more chow appearance the other more shepherd. Both very protective and active digs, the more chow being the more aggressively protective with her sister pitching in. Knew their boundaries very well, like when they were in the truck they'd bark up a storm, making people scared for themselves worried they'd jump out after them. But they'd never jump out at people*, and if you let them out of the truck to run around some place that wasn't 'theirs' they'd leave other people alone and be relatively friendly, even if they were ready to take their arms off when they were in the truck.
*Once each they have jumped out in response to dogs. The chow-ier one once jumped out to chase off a PACK of dogs chasing the vehicle. Skinned her chin and still scared the other dogs pack to their own yard. The more shepherd one once jumped out the window suddenly while on a long trip DOWN THE HIGHWAY, fortunately they weren't any other cars at the time and by some miracle she managed to land on and stay on the pads of her feet while sliding eagle spread along the road surface. I still have no idea how she managed not to get hurt and only have a little wear on the pads of her feet, since they were going 60-70mph at the time. Why did she jump out? After stopping, we realized we passed a large stone STATUE of a dog someone had marking the driveway to their property. ..She wasn't the brightest of the two, good dog nonetheless.

my grandparents had an awesome chow. one day i was over playing their nes, my parents wouldn't let me have one, when xiao-xiao came over and laid next to me.
anyway i just got the tanuki suit for mario and xiao-xiao kept licking my arm and i was all "what the shit" but then she looked in my eye with that crazy blue-purple tongue lolling out of her mouth and gave a soft woof.
i put the controller down and started scratching the scruff of her neck when i discovered that she was pressing her hindquarters against me. thing is that it felt kinda good. i scratched harder and she moaned and whined like crazy when grandpa came in.
he started shouting shit calling xiao-xiao a little hussy and swatted her with a newspaper right on the face. i got up in his shit and tried to defend the poor dog. "You fat little bastard, you'll get yours and maybe then you'll learn to stay away from other people's property."
grampa raped me that night while the dog scratched and whined like crazy at my bedroom door.

I love the look of them, but I have always heard from people who have been around them that they are quite aggressive to strangers.

Seconding. Neighbors had a pair when I was a kid; the fuckers would chase me and anyone else on their way home from the bus stop.

Thirded. Some friends and I were walking down the sidewalk one day when this guy's chow (who up until now had been sitting very nicely by his owner's feet) suddenly lunged at my pal completely out of the blue, no provocation whatsoever. I was standing right by the chow and he nearly crashed into my legs trying to get to my friend.

Not saying that all chows are aggressive, but from experience, many of them are quite unpredictable (due to their poor eyesight, I hear).
