My pet rat just died. :(

I've had him for a long time, so it wasn't a surprise. I kept him in my bedroom, and whenever I would walk in there he would jump up on the bars of the cage and look at me, and I would let him out and set him on my shoulder while I went around the house doing whatever. he would sit in my lap while I read myself to sleep, and more than once I forgot to put him back only to find him still in the same place in the morning.

The last few days though, he hasn't been doing that, so I let him rest, only taking him out about once a day. he would sit on my shoulder just the same, and sit on my bed jsut the same, sometimes running around and getting into stuff like he always did.

Today though he didn't do that. I took him out and he was breathing really fast. he had gotten skinny even though his food bowl was full, so i saw it coming. I just took him out and held him against my chest as he took his last few breaths.
I wonder if he knew I was there for him.

R.I.P. Ezekiel, the only ear-breathing animal that could stomach my presence.

I'm really sorry for you. I'm usually a pretty stoic, cynical guy, but these types of stories always get to me. I've heard owning rats compared to emotional masochism because of their short lifespans. I've had Stewart and Stanley (my rats) for just a month now, but they're already in my heart, and I know I'm going to cry for days when they die, so I have an idea of how you feel. One hug to you. Goddammit now I'm making myself cry.

P.S. How old was he?

About 2 years.

Here's a tip: Feed them veggies to increase their lifespans. He got a little unhealthy a few months ago, but I started giving him a few baby carrots and he perked right up.

Now I have about half a bag of baby carrots that I don't know what to do with.

They're Ezekiel's. :(

Plant them in the garden, and have a little carrot bed. Kind of in memory of Ezekiel, and will give you yummy carrots later. If you have no garden, go go gadget window-box.

Also, my condolences to you. Losing anyone close to you is hard, animal or human.

this makes me fear for my ratties. one's almost 10 months old, and the other's almost 8. it makes me really sad to know that i might only have them for another year or so. i hope they live long. i always do whatever i can to keep them healthy.

I am very very sorry for your lose. :( Almost everyday I dread the coming day for my girls. I got really bummed when I realized I nearly had them for a year. At least, youre baby didn't suffer and was with you for this last minute. I think he knew. They are so smart.

My condolences. Losing a pet is the shittiest feeling in the world.

Yeah, it scared the shit out of my because I have rat poison under my kitchen sink.

My sympathy.

I once had a rat that would escape from her cage at night and run all the way from the living room into my bedroom at around 3 am at least once a week. I would feel something moving around on my feet and then the next thing I knew, I felt whiskers tickling my face. Shat brix the first time it happened, and never figured out how she was doing it.

I'm really sorry for your loss, OP.

I used to have a rat that would literally hug me when I took him out of his cage every morning. He would reach out with both hands like a baby wanting to be picked up, then he would scramble onto me and put his little arms around my neck (well, a few inches of my neck, anyway) and nuzzle me.

I cried like a baby for two days when he died. I had him for about 2 1/2 years. ;_; I've had many rats since then, but none of them were quite like him.

BAWWWWWWWWW.

;_;

I'm sorry for your loss, OP. I just got my two boys and I'm already dreading their short lifespans.

This is why I can't keep rats anymore. When I was younger, 2-3 years felt like a LONG time, now it seems to pass by so quick. I've had dogs and cats and hamsters and rabbits, and of all those the rats seem to have the most unique personalities. That uniqueness means you will never be able to replace a rat, you can get another but it will be completely different.

Yeah, i'm pretty sure next time i'll either get something stupider or something more long lived, like a catgirl.
