i have a maine coon and she is fucking adorable, but she has huge knots on her back that are probably driving her crazy. i have a metal brush-type thing but it doesnt seem to do the trick. So what are some good ways of getting rid of these damn knots?

You'll have to cut through them, unfortunately. I have a cat very similar to a Maine Coon (Ragamuffin) who gets knots sometimes, and what I do is this: get a fairly finetoothed metal comb and slide it under the knot so it serves as a shield between the knot and her skin, then use either small nail scissors or a seam ripper (this actually works really well) to get through the knot. Then just comb it out. Simple as that!

Get a cat rake, (looks like a wide tooth comb with nails) works well on my longhair ragdoll. They're like $6 at Walmart. Just pick at it (gently) and it'll eventually loosen enough to comb out.
