Holy shit these things are creepy in person.

I just went out into my garage to get some ice cream from the freezer and there was an HUGE opposum eating from my cats food bowl.

I used to get this one possum that would come in my garage and eat the cat food. First time I caught it in there, I caught it with my bare hands by the tail and put it in a cat carrier. I then dropped it off a few blocks away.

Of course, the next night, the same possum comes into the garage. Instead of dropping it off at another place, I chucked the motherfucker as hard as I could into the pavement. It stunned it, but when it became "consious" again, it limped off into the darkness.

Also, possums shit, piss, and drool everywhere when you catch them.

those things look like gigantic rats. People with rat phobia and immigrated from a country where possums doesn't exist would fucking shit bricks when they see one up close

I just let them be, if possible. Normally they have a "we can coexist peacefully" system going with cats, too.

Though I know someone who had a particularly mean one that would threaten people with angry noise and teeth, and some charging if it came to it. Their cats each came in with a wound, too.

Several attempts of running it off failed, and they tried to kill it ... I heard this involved repeated blows with a shovel, and then when that failed, a gunshot to the head. It was dumped in a dumpster. The next morning the guy was leaving for work and he claims it was sitting on the lid staring at him, jumped down, and wandered off.

I love when people tell tall tales about their own incompetence.

"The Tale of the Pussy Who Couldn't Kill A Fucking Possum, Even With A Goddamn Gun."

*grin* It did sound pretty ridiculous, but the guy seemed serious enough. I teased him about how it was going to come back and get him some day.

Opossums are so strange.. it's like they're just.. like they've been around forever, big ol' prehistoric mammals who were watching the tyrannosaurs thump by in their youth, you know? My dogs sniffed one out the other night and it just sat there and stared at us from a tree. It seemed so.. detached. I know it was probably just really scared but man that doesn't seem like much of a survival mechanism.

Anyway, one time I was out driving with a friend of mine in the suburbs we lived in at the time. We came upon an opossum lying with its back to us in the middle of the road. We were going pretty slowly and as we started to go around it, it lifted its head and looked at us and there was blood coming out of its mouth and it was very fucking disturbing. Creepy, indeed.

They wouldn't be nearly as creepy if their mouths didn't hang open like that They actually look sorta cute as babies.

My mother found an opossum with babies dead on the side of the road, so she brought home the babies and raised them. Apparently they are hateful even hand reared.

The key to killing an opossum is not to beat it with a shovel, its to BEHEAD it with a shovel. Rabid opossum + garbage can trap + shovel stab to the neck = beheaded like an Iraqi homosexual

You raise a good point. The Bitter family has quite a bit of haetful animals in it, maybe its because we like to put them in sacks and throw them down stairs? The world may never know.

Opossums are highly resistant to rabies and attempts to infect them via intramuscular injections in a laboratory setting have failed, but they have been known to contract the disease via airborne pathogens from bats.

They can't see very well so there's no way for them to focus on anything. They're always "staring off"

>>229302
They gape defensively.

Handfed opossums make WONDERFUL pets. They like to curl up in your lap and eat popcorn with you. They're really good on a leash, too.
The best thing in the world is to feed them a peeled whole banana.

(not eating a banana, but its still cute. RIP sophie..)

Friend of a friend of mine found an opossum and two raccoons on his porch one night. The possum was eating the cat food, while the coons were just hanging out. He said the raccoons looked at one another as though saying "Why not?" and then one of them started humping the possum, which kept right on eating.
