So basically I have wild mice running around my house. Despite the fact that they are cute little buggers, I just cannot take it anymore. Being woken up at 4am from them chewing on things and having holes in food packages is not worth it. I have spent 40 bucks on two things that you plug in and emmit a high pitched frequency that humans cannot hear but were supposed to drive those mice out. Well it is not working. I really do not want to kill them with mouse traps though.

What's the best way to get rid of mice?

You are renting?

Have your landlady get rid of them, and sue her if she doesn't.

Then get a cat.

If you are enduring an actual mice plague, chances are even the most ferocious of hunters won't be able to keep up with them. A cat is only effective up to a certain point. Trust me, I have lived through a plague and as indefatigable a hunter as my cat was, all she got was fat. There were still hundreds and hundreds of the bastard things. If the infestation is originating outside your house then you may just have to live with it and use conventional trapping/poisoning, In my situation, we put off poisoning for as long as we could for fear we might poison our dogs and cats, and wild snakes and predatory birds in the process but ultimately the only thing that stopped them was the entire block laying out masses of bait. If the infestation has settled in your house and is refusing to settle down I'd stongly suggest that you either lay bait and abid the smell (yes, it is dreadful) or call in an exterminator and pay as much as you have to. Wild mice can be vectors of some very nasty diseases, not to mention they piss and shit on everything and ruin.

In the meantime I'd strongly suggest that you seal all food in heavy duty airtight plastic boxes, and consider doing the same for your linen.

There is a type of trap that lures the mice into it with food and simply closes without harming them. You then just go find a field for them ^_^

Invent a better mousetrap.
Now, spray fox urine around the place.

Talk to the Landlady, if she doesn't do anything talk to the housing department.

It doesn't even need to be good at catching mice. I had a cat who was as dumb as mud and she was able to scare the mice away just from being in the house.

My new cat now eats anything that moves. We don't even have spiders now.

Seriously, get a cat.

Get a cat, they work wonders. Sadly our mouser died (never came home), but she got 5 mice in one afternoon.

I used a combination of a cat and humane mouse traps. Simply smear peanut butter onto the inside of the trap, go to sleep, and in the morning release your mouse into the wilderness.

We've had a mouse problem for awhile. I really hate killing them, but relocation doesn't work, they just come back in (I've tested this by dropping paint on all of them I caught, caught em again).
Snap traps are the most humane, when they work they're instant.
The D-Con mouse pellets work best for us, but its not quick, it causes them to bleed to death internally, and they often come out in the open when they're sick and look at you all pitiful.
Cats don't really scare them we have a ton of cats and they just watch the mice run around at night.
