What is /an/'s opinion of the Dachshund aka weiner dog? I might be getting one soon.

My cousin had one that died recently. They seem to be good dogs.

I have two miniature Dachshunds of my own.

They're great companion dogs, and can get attached very quickly. Since they were bred to be hunting dogs to track down things like rats and badgers, they were bred to have an elongated body so as to maneuver through burrows and tunnels to get to the animals it was sent to get.

They also make great guard dogs, and would most likely bark at anyone they don't know who might be around.

This usually includes anyone who is welcomed into the house, such as friends or family. But the dog's temperament depends if he or she would bite that person, which is a little unlikely since I've rarely met any distempered Dachshunds save one, since the owner's son kept harassing the dog.

But Dachshunds are an all around great dog. Energetic, lovable, playful, and so on.

The only big things are that you should be sure of are to make sure your fence is digproof if you plan to have them outside, and to make sure you have enough time for it because they require a lot of attention.

They are mostly sweet dogs but can be really, really needy and yappy. You have to take into consideration that they were bred to catch animals in their burrows -- they will try and tear apart anything they find in your backyard.

It's really important to pick them up properly and support their weight carefully. They can develop spine problems if you pick them up wrong.

For the most part, they are very sweet dogs.

i hate small dogs >=( this breed, from the ones i've met, seems particularly pissy too.

OP here. I used to own one of these until I made the mistake of letting my dad take her out in his truck and he lost her. Maybe this one is more to your liking?

I've had one for 4 years now and I love him to death, but he's a little bastard. :|

Pros: They are very loyal and loving, they want to play with you and are good with other dogs unless the other one is too big and rambunctious. Very handsome, too, if you go for the long hairs (which are the more mild mannered out of the three dachshund types).

Cons: Stubborn, barky, overprotective, needy, demanding. They are always at your side wanting to be payed attention to, or just plain following you everywhere...mine is always at my feet (I've almost stepped on him many times)..
They also have back problems, so if you live somewhere with lots of stairs I would not recommend a dachshund.

They are also VERY emotional..mine gets upset when you yell at him and stays in a dark corner unless you "make up" with him. Very weird personalities.

After all is said and done, they are awesome dogs, but be prepared to deal with their need for attention and their interesting personality.

If you like useless, obnoxious pets doomed to have health issues and be a fat lardball, go ahead. Your neighbors will hate you for it.

OP here again. Good thing I live up on a hill with no neighbors, then. Fat lardball? I've never really seen one that was particularly fat, and i've seen quite a few of them before.

The stair thing isn't a problem, the only stairs my house has are the one's leading to the front door, and there's only a few of them. The temperament sounds similar to my mom's Foxhound, and it doesn't bother me much so I'd say this one will be fine.

Here's mine. :)

Their barks are unexpectedly deep and very loud, since their chests are barrel-like; plus, like said before, they bark often. They also don't know when to stop eating (and will eat a lot of things, including their own poop), and can get overweight very easily.

Dachshunds, from my experience at least, are very very loyal dogs with rather pushy dispositions. They are sweet though, they're just stubborn and a bit harder to train.

have owned two of these pests.

large rodents they are and they will eat everything. The Do get fat and they hate to walk.

They dont so much bark as scream blue murder, and can scream for hours without pause.

They nip and are agressive, especially towards children or things bigger than them.

If they become attached to someone in you house who has no interest in trainning it properly they will become the little hitlers that nature intended them to be.

Caution must be paid to their legs...

If you see a potential one you like has feet pointing into each other, or towards the torso, not parrallel to it, dont touch them... they are cursed with very bad genes

long hair sausage dogs are murder to groom

their claws get sharp and they hate getting them cut.

so far, pretty much ALL of the things mentioned are true. my bf's family dog is a mini dachshund (10+ years?) and is really attached to his mom. but if she's not home he'll just bark at anything or try to bug someone else.

i personally think the dog is an annoying little bitch, barks A LOT, whines for food, pees/poos in the bathroom if there is no one letting him outside, snots that stain the carpet, doesn't eat NORMAL dog food, and smells really bad.

...i don't get how they could tolerate such a dumb dog. -___-

They can be grumpy, usually caused by backproblems like hernias. Might need lot of veterinary attention due to long backs and bad genes. Are loyal but tend to attach to one person only, can be huge assholes to others, especialy if not trained properly.

Basically, the things that are already mentioned.
