There are plenty misconceptions of this ( as an iguana owner I've had to read up on just about every article out there. They aren't easy animals to own! )

There's always the threat of salmonella, but reptiles don't always have it. A fecal sample must be tested for the bacteria. Also, it is only found in the reptiles GI tract and cannot be contracted from the skin, saliva, or from being scratched ( unless the animal is covered in feces, and if that's the case..they're probably very ill anyway).

Catching salmonella from a reptile ( that has recently been showered) has about the same risk of catching E-coli from a baby or a human being.
