Millions of different types of insects have evolved, and the ones that that can adapt better will obviously live on. Some survive because they are poisonous, or extremely fast. While others simply happen to look like their sorroundings i.e. leaves, tree bark, branches, etc... After many generations the ones that happen to look more like a leaf or a branch have a better chance of surviving and will pass those genes on to their descendant.. I doubt they can visually or purposefully somehow genetically self modify themselves.
