Hello /an/,

I have a small stockpile of dead animals in my freezer. I am wondering how to go about preserving them in jars. I know that formaldehyde is a bit dangerous, are there any safe and cheap products or mixtures out there that will do the job?

I remember that they're thinking of reading the thylacine's DNA from a fetus preserved in alcohol. So I would assume sufficiently pure ethanol would do.

pure ethanol is pretty dangerous also, one spark and "LOL, where'd my skin go? LOL"

Alcohol is no more flammable than formaldehyde, but it is a much lower safety risk. I mean, people DRINK Ethanol.

If you are concerned about flammability then just use 80% ethanol and 20% water. That will greatly reduce the flammability risk.

Isopopyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) works too.

You could also use a solution of water and sodium nitrate. Sodium nitrate is used as a food preservative, it is an antibacterial agent.

Formalin solution isn't flammable, just toxic. And what comes to the flammability of ethanol... Come on, it's going to be in a stoppered bottle. It isn't any more dangerous than all those spray cans using butane or w/e as a propellant.

Btw, concentrated ethanol and isopropanol aren't that great for preserving animals. Point being, they'll dry the corpse and you'll get a meat raisin. I guess adding water helps, but I have no idea how much water you can add.

Did you slowly torture the animals to death while masturbating?

beer is sterile, safe and tasty, a friend of mine choped of his index finger when we were making some closets (dumbass+ tablesaw = crazy delicious)so we put it in his beer and ran for the emergency room, where he sat for 2 fucking hors thanks to the ever eficient mexican healt sistem but still the finger lived troug and now is back in place, numb and scarred but alive, never leting this fucker in my shop again...

I agree the "closed container" factor makes it largely irrelevant, but Formaldehyde is extremely flammabe. NFPA rating of "4" for flammability...which is the highest possible rating. It's flash point is -53 degrees C!
>> Anonymous
that's normal.

You checked its flash point, but you didn't notice that it's a fucking gas? Fail.
It is used as a water solution and formaldehyde solution (formalin) is not flammable.

Not that I realy care but you need to get a better, less OCD, hobbie.

Correction: apparently even formalin solution burns, if it is hot enough. Well, in any case it doesn't present a fire hazard in normal conditions.

Umm, counter question: swhy do you have dead animals in your freezer?...

How To Preserve Bodies:

You will need:
-latex gloves
-buckets, jars
-hyperdermic needles
-Formalin 37% or formaldehyde
-isopropyl alcohol

1) Soak body in Formalin solution 5-7 days. Inject solution into body cavity if needed.

2) Rinse thoroughly in water for 24 hours.

3) Place in closed container of isoprophenol for perminant storage
