Eskies Anonymous
As in American Eskimo Dogs. The breed itself is an offshoot of the German Spitz (ironically), and was once widely used in American circuses. That being said, most of them are clowns. Especially mine.

Anyone else ever heard of the breed?

Of course. American Eskimo dogs were developed and bred in the United States, fairly recently. They come in three sizes: standard, miniature, and toy. The breed did not come from a German Spitz as much as that used to be it's name (the term German Spitz used to encompass a large range of breeds). You're right about the circus dogs, they are very friendly and like to show off for people.

They can be pretty neat dogs, although ones bred truer to standard tend to be a pain to groom due to the undercoat. My grandma used to have an Eskie named Tuffy. He was a dork. =)

I have an eskimo.. I love her to death. She has the most personality Iv ever seen in a dog and much smarter than my jack russel. The clown part definitely shows.. when she wants a treat she will jump up onto her hind legs and thrust her front paws down repeatedly. When she wants her belly rubbed she'll follow you around and then roll over onto her back and do the paw thing every time you look at her.

She also knows how to use the bathroom outside.. she will wake me up in the mornings when she has to go by putting her paw on my face and whenever she has to go.

Here's a pic of my Daisy.
