first of all, if you are absolutely set about getting guinea pigs, get them from a shelter. please. if there happen to be none at the shelters near you, wait until they get some in. and yes, for what it's worth, they do sell females at regular pet stores. obviously (or hopefully) not in the same cage as males.
guinea pigs do not menstruate, but they come into heat every few weeks. the worst they do is try to hump each other, though this could lead to a little scuffle/fight which should end in a few seconds.
pigs need. NEED. a big cage. do not buy one from a store, period. make your own: http://www.guineapigcages.com/
some can be litter trained, but mostly for peeing; they tend to poop everywhere, but it's not a big deal because their poops are small and very easy to clean. i keep my two girls on fleece bedding because it's a lot easier to clean than traditional chip bedding. i vacuum the cage daily and wash it weekly - you will have to do that, too, if you don't want the cage to become a festering pile of pigshit.
they should be given time outside the cage to run around, not in your yard, but in a safe room in your house. also, they need to be fed fresh vegetables/fruit every day along with a steady pile of timothy hay and timothy pellets. it is very important that they get enough vitamin C in their diet.
also, you should not ever have guinea pigs if you have a cat or a dog. there is just too much of a risk of the cat/dog getting at the pigs.
