Hello /an/

I just got a kitten today, female, black, 7 weeks old. Is there anything you think I should know about kittens? I've had cats before but never a kitten. I also have one older male cat (8 years) and a female dog around the same age.

tl;dr: tips on raising cats

take as many pictures as is possible, no matter how redundant and back them up in more than one location - you won't regret it,

Don't be surprised if the older cat doesn't take it well right away. Introducing cats to one another seems to never go smoothly.

Get her spayed ASAP if she's not already.

Provide fun toys. Try not to use your hands as toys or she'll think kicking and biting them is okay. If she DOES bite/scratch/kick you, remove yourself gently and ignore her. I did this with my two cats as kittens and they use soft paws whenever they interact with me or anyone else.

Provide fun scratching surfaces. My cats are particularly fond of corrugated cardboard, especially in a turbo scratcher. Pic related. If you catch her scratching on furniture, put her on something she can scratch and if she uses it instead, praise her.

try not to force the cats into interaction. it seems they have their own diplomatic instinct. I have a kitty at the same age right now. it was frightened of a bigger cat but after the a couple of days and short encounters everyday there is a completely new situation. the kitty tries to follow the bigger cat everywhere.

i wouldn't want to recommend introducing a kittens to an older male cats. But seeing that this is a female kitten with a male cat, i'm not sure how it would turn out.
I've had cats before and when i introduced a male kitten to a male cat, it didn't work out.
Good luck on you cat and kitten and let me know how things go.

Right now the older cat is hiding in the basement and is pretty much pissed off at everyone, which is rare. Will update soon.

me again (280281), I know this sounds lame, but maybe the male cat feels, well... jealous of the new kitten?

Probably. I'm trying to spend equal amounts of time between the two. Oh, and the older cat is now upstairs but still growls/hisses at anyone who comes near him.
