I am very tempted to get a ferret.

I have 3 baby snakes that I have only had for a few months.

[un]convince me.

3 snakes... so you already have ferret food then

we had 2 ferrets... the house stunk because of them... food in, poop out all day long... don't know what smelled better going in or coming out

Get one.

When you buy one from a pet shop, are they usually neutered and ready to go outside (to walk) and stuff?

itl stress the HELL out of your snakes.... my brother got rid of his ferret becouse his 2 snakes wouldn't relax for a year! he couldn't handle them any more becouse they would strike at anything that moved and they were just unhappy and lost a lot of weight. even in different rooms...

I was told by my pet shop guy (who's a professional) that snakes weren't bothered by dogs or other pets.

Dude, most people who work in pet store don't know shit about animals. If they did, they wouldn't support the selling of puppy mill dogs, which is where most pet store get their dogs.

If ferrets dont breed when they go into heat for the first time then they die... So yes they are "treated".

Also ferrets are amazing animals. They are like kittens their entire lives. Bounce around and talk like no other.

Lazy people don't like pets that they need to take care of so they get something like a spider or a tank. You will have to change their litter(Yes they shit in kitty litter)every week or so. They shit in corners so put the litter in the corners. We had a large cage and needed to put a few litter boxes in the tank.

They are extremely sensitive to heat and WILL overheat and die if they get to hot. They're illegal to own in some states, like cali.

They don't live long enough imo, 7years are so. Its a sad death usually. A couple of mine had hip pains and had to put them down.

All in all if you enjoy little furry things then get one. Very entertaining animals.

Yes, they're usually fixed, but they don't have their full set of vaccinations yet ... that's where you come in. They usually need two distemper vaccines and a rabies vaccine soon after you get them. So that's a good $150 (including check-up) in addition to the price of the ferret and all its supplies.

OP, a few drawbacks to ferrets:

1) They pretty much play by getting into shit and exploring. What room will you let one out in for the required 3-4 hours a day? It needs to be carefully ferret-proofed and as a new ferret owner you'll end up re-ferret-proofing the room a couple times to catch everything you didn't think of before bringing it home. When I worked for Petco probably 50% of people who bought ferrets brought them back a few days later saying "All they do is get into everything".

2) They litter train to a great extent, but few will do it 100% of the time. Expect accidents.

3)They are very social and can become lonely without a constant buddy. For its own sake you should buy or adopt a pair. *there are lots of homeless ferrets, you ought to adopt some instead of buying.

4) They usually need to be trained not to nip.

5)You absolutely need to know the location of an Emergency Vet that treat ferrets. The little guys, with their curious nature are likely fall of a shelf and get hurt, or eat something (often small and rubbery) that will cause an intestinal blockage or bloody diarrhea. You'll need money put away and a plan to deal with these emergencies.

Ferrets are the worst domestic pets you can own, imo. My family has had two of them and while they were cute, they are just too much of a head ache to deal with. They stink, they crap ALL day, and they whine and whine when you walk by the case because they want out ALL the time, even if you play with them several hours a day. It's like having a kitten, but for years at a time.

I hope my family never gets another one.

Just keep your snakes, dude.

I work at Petco and the Ferrets are the best part of the day. They're awesome. Not sure I would want to deal with one all day every day, though.

My ferrets, even if I don't let them out every day, don't whine... o_O I pass their cage, they get outta bed, because I was too loud and woke them and they wait for me to open it. If I don't let them out, they just go back to sleep.

Srsly, they sleep like 18 hours a day.

I just got my first ferret a month ago and I LOVE him! even if it is way more work than I expected. You should get one OP.

I got a pair of ferrets, and handled them before buying. They were fine.

Brought them home, started setting up their cage, one bit me. Clung on for 5 minutes. Then bit me again. Had to go to hospital.

NO pet stores in my area sell these things. Are they illegal in some states?

Nor did any near me. I had to find a seller on preloved.co.uk (but you're americunt aren't you)

They're insane amounts of work. Gotta let them run around at least 2-3 hours a day, and you have to watch them all the time.
You also have to plug every hole and prevent them from getting to higher places. If they can destroy or knock something over, they'll do it.

They're fun animals, but expect to care for them several hours every day for the next 8 years.

Yes they are illegal in some states. Do you live in California or Hawaii? If so, that is probably why you don't see them.

they fucking smell
>> Anonymous
I have two and I love them. They don't smell that much if they have their musk glands removed, but they can an will get into everything and everyplace possible if you don't watch them.
