My dog died yesterday /an/. How do you cope?
>> Anonymous
you dont

I'm so sorry -- it's like getting over the death of your child.

There are pet-grief counseling groups, if you're interested in that sort of thing. Google for your area.

get a cat. they dont smell.

seriously though.

get a cat.

Proper funeral. Whatever that ends up being. Pictures in a binder somewhere.

Thing is, one of the most important things pet animals teach us is that life doesn't last forever. Therefore there's very little that you can do about pets passing away except learn to accept it. "Drink from the cup as though it was already broken" and so forth.

Go eat shit, catfag.

No cat can ever replace a dog.

my yorskshire terrier died when i was 13 years old, i cried for an entire day ;_; he had also just turned 13. I dont know how to cope with it... well sorta... It depends on how attached you are with the dog. My dog was like a brother to me which is why it had such an impact on me. But its many years now, and ive long since gotten over it. But still, when it happened it was the saddest day of my life.

Sorry for your lose.

Getting a new dog helps, because of the dogs wonderful nature.

then i got a cat and was happy, and will continue to be happy for the duration of its significantly longer life.

Personally, I cope with things by just moving on. Lots of people like to wallow in the past, reminisce on things lost, and regret things they did or didn't do-- that doesn't help. It just postpones recovery. It doesn't mean you care less if you choose to not let it ruin your week. Be sad about it if you have to get it out, but don't feel obligated to be sad because it honors their memory or whatever.
Be happy about what you learned from the dog/experience and apply it to the future. If the dog's death was due to something preventable, take that as a lesson, too. Angsting over loss doesn't do anything. Choosing to use what you've experienced from it does.
Alternatively, cry to your livejournal, get a cheesy thousand dollar pet funeral, and wibble over its lifeless urn for the next five years.

I would personally kill 50,000 cats with my bare hands in front of their owners to have my dog back for one more day.

And in some way, my dog probably would have done the same for me.

Enjoy your faggot pet that only cares about you because you feed it.

my dog who grew up with me (got him when i was 9) died this past year, and i was super sad. i still get sad thinking about him but also, he was an awesome friend and i'll never forget that. i think about the good times and hope that i gave him at least half as much happiness as he gave me. he was a loyal friend to the end. i miss him, and i would kill countless random people just to have him back. but such is life... i'm feeling a bit better these days. i just got a new cat.

That shows you're a sick fuck with serious mental problems.
I'm sick of stupid assholes who think cats don't love just as dogs do. I have both cats and a dog and the cats are much more affectionate. Where are all of those trolls pop up to start those shitstorms?

thought dogs were immortal, clearly i was wrong about dogs being superior to cats.

this discussion doesnt make sense. XD

Cats AND Dogs CAN BE caring and lovely (as well as all crazy and stuff) but each one on a different way. ._.

both Dogs and Cats owners, as well as any other kind of pet Owner gets sad whe his pets die O.o

(well in most cases)

We love THIS thing, and we dont even know if its a dog, or a cat, or a Unicorn-Gremlin hybrid...

(just kiddin)

I cried like a baby when my turtle died. Now THAT is a pet that feels no love beyond 'Oooh, food source!'

You can never say what people get attached to.

OP, I'm really sorry for your loss. People say that getting another pet helps, but it must be too painful for you to think about right now.

And both cats and dogs have their good and bad points and they both do feel love. I personally prefer cats over dogs (though I do like dogs too, especially the big friendly ones) because cats have attitude which they think is dignified but is really comical.

my dog died two weeks ago, after living with me for the last 13 years. It's hard, but just focus on the good times. If your dog was sick like mine, don't think about that. Think about when you'd play games or whatever it was that you did together.
Dogs (and cats!!!) are WONDERFUL companions and I'm sure your canine friend loved you as much as you loved him/her.

My dog died last year, December 17th which was 5 days after my birthday, and a few days away from Christmas.. It's embarrassing, but I bawwww'd hard that day. It wasn't just losing a pet, it was losing a family member, a pal.

my cat was affectionate and very playful, and my dog was playful but laid back.

when my cat died, i felt sad for a day and got over it.

when my dog died, i felt sad for a week. and even now and then i remember him.

its funny, i probably spent more time with my cat, but i felt my dog's loss worse.

LOL. I noticed that about dog owners myself. So god damn adamant about their preference! Most cat owners shrug it off with a disinterest similar to their pet's notorious outlook on life.

Cats are stoopid.

Not the cat owners I know, but I think most of us are a bit biased. I understand why someone would prefer either animal.
