Red touches black, you're okay, Jack!

Red touches yellow, you're a dead fellow

Unless you meant by means of a pet store... in which case just read up on snakes, I think corn snakes are supposed to be one of the easier breeds to care for

Corn snakes are pussy pieces of shit. Never wear gloves. Put them on your face. Stick them up your ass. They're not going to do anything because they're as close to a domesticated snake as you can get.

They are boring and stupid. There are better choices for snakes out there.

Ball Pythons are just as bad.

What do you need to know? Have a suitably sized enclosure, aspen bedding, water dish, heat pad, clean out shit when you see it, and feed them mice once a week. There's nothing to know other than that.

King snakes are great snakes for beginners. I just suggest you wash your hands before and after handling, and don't handle it too much at first, since they can get stressed from over handling. Over time, they become really laid back, and don't usually bite, so yea, they're a mellow species.

Ball Pythons are another good snake, but aren't really for people who can't handle a snake that can reach five feet or more, and have the girth to boot. Rarely do they ever bite, and can be handled safely, especially if you're doing a science expo for your local school. OMSI's choice for snake/kid supervised interaction.

Main things is buy a few books and do internet research on the snake, buy all your equipment and a decent sized tank before buying the animal. Also, washing hands before and after helps nullify any spread of bacteria to you or the snake, while keeping the cage clean of feces and uneaten foods is even more important.

Christ, when will people stop recommending BPs? They aren't a good beginner python. They have shedding issues and feeding issues all the time. I constantly hear, "Halp why mah ball not eat fo' 10 munths huh?" or "Halp wut do i do wit stuck shed huh?"

You want a python that won't give you those issues, get a Jungle Carpet. They're longer, but slender, and with the right amount of handling to calm them down, a lot more entertaining since they don't sit there like a brick (unless you're into bricks, then go take a shit and see if you get a BP).

Best constrictor by far for newfags are Rosy Boas. 4 feet, fat, naturally docile, and nice looking with lifespans over 30 years easily. If you put the effort into finding one, one of those will be a much better deal for you in the end.

Kingsnakes are good though. A lot better than Corns. Except for my Desert King. She's a stupid bitch. But that's my fault, because I don't handle her ever and keep her locked up in a Sterilite tub like a dirty Austrian.

Corn Snakes are good climbers so put fake plants and sticks in the enclosure, however they're good escape artists, so have a lid on the enclosure. Your going to want atleast a 20 gallon tank for an adult, but a ten gallon tank is fine for youngsters

Ok. So this is what I have...

Day 1: Setup the aquarium a 30G long I had from when I kept fish.

Under-tank heat pad to one side.
Aspen or reptile bark bedding.
3 hidey boxes one at each side (warm/room temp) and one in the middle.
Water dish deep enough to soak in with a wide base kept near the middle on the warm side.
Miscellaneous fake shrubbery and a plastic branch or two to climb on.
Secure screen lid with clamps.

Day 2 Part 1: Verify the temperature is 85F-88F with in-tank and digital thermometer.

Day 2 Part 2: Purchase snake from local retailer as well as frozen pinkies.

Day 2 Part 3: Leave the snake the fuck alone.

Day 3: Make sure the snake is alive, continue to leave it the fuck alone.

Day 4: Handle the snake for the first time, maybe twice for 5-10 minutes at a time.

Day 5: Snakeh day of rest.

Day 6: More handling, this time slightly longer. 10-15 minutes a few times.

Day 7: Snakeh's first meal, to be fed in a separate box.

Holy fucking lizard shit. This local place wanted $70 for a baby corn snake. FUCK THAT IN THE ASS, I says.

I can get one online for $50 overnighted.

$70 is ridiculous, right?

I went to a reptile show and bought myself a ghost morph corn snake several years ago, I only paid $30 for it as it was a baby.
