First, I'd check shelters and rescues in your area. Plenty of those rabbits get dumped. Second, rabbits are not for children. They don't like to be held and there's a particular way to approach and deal with rabbits. Rabbits will bite if they feel scared or threatened. They can also claw you, and draw blood. It will depend on the rabbit's personality and in your way to handle the bunny. If anything, children can be taught how to handle and pet rabbits in a non threatening way. The advantage of getting a rabbit from a rescue is that most likely, you will get an adult rabbit with a developed and known personality, and the rescuer will be able to tell you about its temperament.
