/an/, I have a fear of butterflies. It's not just a small fear, but a real phobia. Whenever I see a butterfly I freeze up and start to breath deeply. It doesn't matter whether I see it in real life or if it's in a picture (I just started at this pic for two minutes before I could save it to my computer). I don't give a fuck about how beautiful and gracious they are, they scared the living shit outta me.

tl;dr butterflies scare the shit outta me.

What animals are you scared of, /an/?

big ants.
Played near a giant ant hole, got up and had one hanging off my shorts, I fiddled with it, then looked down and saw what i was touching, scarred me for life.

Dogs. Dogs scare me more than anything.

Cockroaches.

And bugs I can't identify. For all I know, it could have laid eggs in me.

Fear of butterflies. I'm rather interested in knowing what happened to you to cause this.

But anyway, I'm really just afraid of spiders. I have far less of a fear of bees but it's mostly because I hate for anything to buzz around my head, even if it's a bug I'm not afraid of.

I inherited it from my mom. She was deathly afraid of spiders when I was a child, to the point of literally leaping onto furniture to escape them. Growing up with that mindset really fucked me over when it comes to the little critters as I have no personal reason to fear or hate them... I just do. Thanks mom.
>> Barksalot !!bUy38Am5hmk
Not quite a phobia, but crazy humans, poisonous snakes and spiders are pretty high up there. Especially crazy humans with poisonous snakes and spiders crawling all over them!

>>281136
You're just saying that. What about Papillons?

>>281143
To be honest with you, I have no clue why I'm so scared of butterflies (moths too). I've never had a bad experience with them. I don't mind spiders or bees, but butterflies really do a number on me. My phobia started showing up about a year ago, but I can't think of anything that might've triggered it.

ALL dogs. When I was 13 my friend's german shepard bit my arm. It drew blood. Ever since then I have never been able to go near a dog without having a panic attack.

Aren't Papillons French for butterflies?

>>281151
That's a strange phobia; are you afraid of sitting on/squishing one?
>> Tired Anon !EHsj4EGwIQ
Parasites... just... no... can't stand seeing pictures of them, especially bot flies.

Also, maggots, specifically crawling in and out of a dead body. Afterwards I have some cracked out notion that sometime in the middle of the night a fly is gonna lay it's eggs on me, and there'll be maggots squirming about under my skin in the morning... Doesn't make sense, but freaks me the fuck out.

I include no pictures.

HOLY FUCK OP

Me too. But not nearly as much as grasshoppers, fuck me i haet grasshoppers. When i was like 5, I'm outside, this big fuck-off huge 'hopper lands on my shoulder, like a parrot, looks at me, jumps on my face/hair, everything after that is a little blurry. Little ones I can stand, just like little moths, but big ones...no way in fuck would I ever go near one, I was reading the Guiness book of records, they had a pic of a grasshopper, i screamed and freaked out.

Centipedes- house centipedes, specifically, because they can be so goddamn fast. The first time I saw one, it was barely visible as it darted across the floor in the half-light, leaving me saying to myself, "What the fuck was that? Did I just see that? WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT?!"

No fly's gonna lay eggs on or in you, ever. Maggots just eat dead flesh, they even use them for medical purposes. If you have an infected wound or ganggreen or w/e, they use sterilized maggots to rid of the dead infected tissue. They're exremely efficient at avoiding healthy tissue, so no worries there.

Bot flys...

How ever, I also have a phobia of maggots, also of leeches. I cannot explain it.. they're just... I don't know.. I know they use maggots for medical purposes. But I would rather loose a leg to Gangreen than let them put maggots on me. Either that, or put me under to do it. I would not be able to handle it.
>> Anonymous
All bugs that are within a 10 feet radius from me.
I can handle butterflies and ladybugs and bees and whatnot(the "cute" bugs) but if they even try to sit on me I will scream and run away.

God, I hate spiders. My fucking brother put his pet tarantula in my hair when I was sleeping when I was about 8, I never really got over that whole ordeal. I shit bricks when a spider gets anywhere near me.
>> Dr. Penguin !KV4CgQB7cs
Spiders. I don't hate them, I'm not even grossed out by them, just genuinely frightened of them. I'm fine with other bugs but there's something about spiders that's so alien.

It's that combination of the number of legs, the ability to spin and climb webs on the whim, and fucking STEALTH abilities that really know how to catch you off guard.

Oh fuck I hate house centipedes. One night I was in my bed reading and I see something fall on to the floor. I thought I lost my book mark. Then the little fucker run and I flip out. I trash my room trying to find it so I could kill it.

It was in my BED!!!

though I don't really have a fear of animals/bugs. At least not one that will stop me from killing them if they are in my space/house.

I am deathly afraid of wild snakes and spiders.

Every time I see a picture of an engorged tick I always want to take a needle to it.

Er, I'm not particularly afraid of anything, but listening to other people's phobias is fun. I dunno if being afraid of tapeworms or any worms that will interact with something I'll eat (like worms in apples) counts though, it's a pretty common fear.

My cousin, however, once opened up one of those hollowed-out chocolate balls that are supposed to have candy inside them - and instead there were a whole ton of maggots. He was about eight at the time... didn't eat chocolate for a year.

This, I don't understand. When I was really young (no idea how young but damn tiny) I got bit in the face by our dog. It LAUNCHED at me, because I was tiny and stupid and wanted to go in its dog house because holy shit awesome (DOG SPENDS SO MUCH TIME IN THERE, LOGICALLY IT MUST BE AMAZING!). It sucked shit, yes, but it never caused any sort of phobia. In fact, I still sobbed my eyes out when the dog was taken away for biting me. I placed full blame on myself, as I recognized dogs as loyal companions of man. I just assumed I fucked up and deserved it.
At the same time, I knew a little boy- the same age, who was bitten and turned into a little pussy who would hide behind his mom/dad at the very sight of a dog.
I'm guessing this is one thing that just highly depends on the person.
Also, spiders. Arachnophobia sucks shit and nobody seems to take bug phobias seriously (the amount of times one hears 'its not going to bite/kill you!!' in a lifetime has got to be in the thousands). I feel you, OP. If nobody over here can understand spiders, I can't imagine the kind of blow you get for butterflies.

You wouldn't care for katydids, then. They're related to grasshoppers and look much the same, but unlike them they're highly aggressive and have powerful cutting mandibles. When the ones around here become full-grown and are about 3 inches long, you have to watch out for them flying about at night, because if they land on you they're liable to take a piece of meat with them.
>> Anonymous
while I don't understand being afraid of butterflies I can kinda see where the op is coming from. I once caught a moth that was HUEG! almost as big as my hand. I thought it was awesome, but then I got it in my head that anything that big must have teeth or a stinger. I then threw it back into the forest.
I don't mind most bugs if they are small, but most butterflies are pretty big so...
>> Anonymous
Fish. Any kind of fish. Small or big, I can't be anywhere near them without starting to twitch.

Except sharks. I braved being near dead fish to feed sharks once.

OP here. I also have a fear of fish, but it's not as intense as my fear of butterflies.

I once had a goldfish. One day it disappeared. Like, seriously, there was no sign of it ANYWHERE. I started to freak out. "Holy fuck what if my fish can levitate!?" I looked everywhere for it. Two weeks passed. Then I found it. It had jumped out of the bowl and landed where I couldn't see it. It fucking dehydrated to death. It was still bright orange. That was when I was 11. To this day I am still traumatized by that experience. I can't go to the fish section of a pet store without someone coming with me.

I don't have any serious phobias, but horses really make me twitch for some reason.

Bees, because they always, always, without fail, divebomb my head out of nowhere.

Alligators and crocodilians in general, courtesy of a childhood spent in the Everglades.

Grasshoppers. They're too... sproingy. Can't predict where those bastards will go next. They're like lalalalaSPROING! NOW I'M IN YOUR EYE, BITCH

Anyone who is afraid of dogs because of being attacked as a kid is a retard. I was too, I got over it.

But yet being afraid of GRASSHOPPERS isn't being retarded?

Dogs can and have killed people for no other reason than that person crossing its path.

explain to me how a person with a fear of this creature is being completely irrational

One time I was outside raking the leaves, when all of a sudden this big ass german shepard comes charging towards me. I freak out and I move behind my car (which was parked on the driveway). The motherfucker jumps onto the trunk, over the car, straight towards me. Right when it lunged towards me, I hit it with the rake on the side of its head. It was okay, but the owners were beyond pissed. But I had a solid case against them. After all, THEIR dog was the one that tried to attack me. Plus, they didn't even bother to get their dog when it ran loose. They were just yelling its name from the other side of the street. It still makes me so angry.

I'm not scared of anything to the extent of a real phobia, but I don't like fluttery, flying things. Moths, beetles, certain birds. Also parasites, but I'd figure that's at least somewhat universal.

Some species of maggot eat live flesh, though I don't know if they would actually eat through skin or just not stop munching once they were done with feasting on the necrotic tissue.
