I agree with this post as well.
I have had hamsters, rats, mice, and gerbils. Hamsters are definatley emo little bastards, and they are very prone to bite. As others have said, exceptions exist but they are indeed rare.
Rats are cool, don't get me wrong--but I found gerbils to be just as fun to play with. The advantage with gerbils is that they really are cleaner than rats. Being a desert animal they have VERY little urine and both their droppings and their urine are essentially odorless. Rats, mice, and hamsters smell more and are more work to clean up after. Rats are a bit more sociable and smarter than gerbils, but the difference is very small. I'd much rather have the less smell and cleanup associated with gerbils.
