Dear /an/
My parents have 2 cats and 2 dogs. Recently, one of my cats has destroyed two beds, and now a couch by urinating/defecating on them. The beds were the beds I sometimes sleep on when I visit them, and since them we've kept the door shut. Now that the couch is destroyed though, my parents have no choice but to get rid of the cat that's doing it (still don't know which).

However, these cats are amazingly cute, loving, and well tempered. Amazing cats. So, I really hate the idea of getting rid of one of them. There has been no recent change in my parent's lifestyle, and if anything things are less stressful for them now than a few months ago when there was no problem.

We've of course looked at web pages on the problem, but we can't go through the 50 suggestions they offer while every bit of padded furniture is ruined. We've gotten new litter boxes and it doesn't seem to solve the problem.

So, does anyone have first person experience with a problem like this?

What are the odds that this is a medical problem that can be fixed? If they have a urinary tract infection, wouldn't we be able to tell by their odd behavior (which as been very normal)? Neither are too old to be losing health.

As a side note, a cat we had years ago died of FIP, and there was the possibility that the disease is laying dormant in one of our cats. Anyone know if misplaced urination be a sign of FIP becoming active?

We'll end of taking them to the vet, but if anyone has any suggestions on what we should be looking for, or if this is unlikely to be a medical problem that can be treated, I'd like to know that too so I don't get my hopes up.

When one of my cats had cancer she either lost control of her bladder or simply preferred to pee in soft places (blankets, and laundry piles)...and never made it to her litter box. We didn't have a problem with defecation because at that point she had stopped eating, and thus had nothing to produce. :( Your situation sounds slightly similar though, because of the cat's choice of location....Was there anywhere else they've done it?

i'm about in the same position. Both of my cats urinate in different places as well, extremely irritating. Vet checked them out and said they were fine.

Marking territory or not, I wish this shit would stop. Can anyone tell me if spaying them would help with that?

well, spaying didn't help in our case. I hear it's a good idea for situations like this though...

There have been 4 cases so far. First 2 in two beds, a third on the floor of the living room, and a final one on the couch.
The cancer is an interesting point, I hadn't thought of it. They both seem in good spirits and health, but if it was localized it might explain the problem. I'll add it to the list of things to look at.

I grew up with cats but don’t remember having this problem. Try to think of anything that may have changed. Death in the family, people fighting/upset, new pet, new neighbour, change of routine are some of the things that can upset pets. Have the dogs or one cat in particular been getting more attention recently? Animals can be extremely jealous. Having said that, maybe even your parents staying home more often may have changed things, although I doubt it. We built our own carpet-covered scratching post. It was just 2 large wooden boxes with holes in them. One was on the ground and the other was at the top with a 1.5 metre pole in-between. Maybe they have decided to be in competition with each other regarding territory after a love feud. How old are they and what sex?
Try to keep them in 2 separate parts of the house, away from each other, each with their own litter box, bed and toys then see what happens.
