Well in Asia, many dogs and cats are strays... dirty, annoying strays which sometimes serve as free meals for the few. Some dying/aging are ughhh... lets say put to some use. Other than that, some of these domesticated animals are bred for meat for rare delicacies. "Meat is meat" after all. Well, you'd never find anybody would seriously say, "hmmm your kitty looks cute and delicious".

hell I've eaten a variety of animals, dogs and cats included. Afterall, meat is meat as someone said. Love pigeon meat though, tastes like duck but with a softer texture. Don't think of me as evil, I love animals too, but if I get a chance to eat a certain animal I would. Also, bunnies are cute yet delicious.

Dog was the first domesticated food animal. "The emergency food package that even followed and helped you, that you could eat for your survival before moving on to your own children." The only reason we don't eat them is probably the preference in taste.

Now ostritch meat.. <3 And horse meat salami. <3

For some reason americans consider eating horse a blasphemy and some go Jihad on you if you try and eat one or feed them some. Just as stupid as moslems not eating pigs, and hindus not eating cows. LAWL!!! Only it's nation-wide religion of America to not eat horse meat.

yeah I know some people from mainland china. Seared dog is actually a delicacy so it's not like they just eat it cause they don't have anything better to eat, it's actually like a treat for them. They say the meat is really tender.

Newsflash: We eat bunnies, baby lambs, baby goats and calfs (veal). All of them are cute. But we still eat them.

Therefore, accusing us that we won't eat dogs 'because they are cute', is a logical fallacy.

We don't eat cats and dogs because we are predetor mammals, and like most of them, we will eat other carnivores as a last resort. We've been pretty much been doing it since the dawn of time. Just like the prehistoric man who herded sheep for food and domesticated the dog for non-consuming reasons. That would probably give you a fucking hint.

>>92035

Uh, Newsflash: Humans aren't carnivores, and a more likely reason we eat cows and sheep and such is that they are herd animals, therefore easy to cultivate in large numbers. Humans tamed things that were easy to tame, not because we have some taboo against eating other carnivores. People eat alligators and bears, too, it's just harder to keep those in large numbers on a farm.
>> Anonymous !4X8vLLNDE2
>>92051

We don't generally eat carnivores because their meat is very tough/not very tasty, since they don't get the nutrients found in plants except from eating herbi/omnivores. Stuff like snake and crocodile are usually marinated to add some juice and flavour.

this thread is made of people who needs to go back to Gaia.
and all that talk about carnivores and herbivores are pure bullshit, people don't normally consume carnivores because they're rare and harder to catch and more dangerous, and impossible to domesticate for food purposes, because large carnivores would really dangerous to keep in a farm. The meat is tough? give me a break... you think starving cavemen millions of years ago would care about if the meat is tough? Humans are evolved to eat anything. But when food resources became more abundant in the recent eons, some people chose the more "tender" and fatty meats. People in Asia eat dogs and cats as a rare treat, it's like bunny meat, good once in a while but nobody eat it everyday...

Muslims and Jews not eating pork is actually pretty smart. Pork is one of the unhealthiest meats to consume, especially in places that aren't the most sterile. Pigs can pass on diseases to humans from farm animals that we normally wouldn't get and usually contain the most parasites and harmful bacteria, not to mention the large abundance of fat.

Having spent some good quality time in Iraq, I can agree with anon here. When we had a chance to eat with the locals, sanitation was not only poor but refridgeration was no where to be found in the 125 degree heat. Big sheets of alluminum foil sat out in the sun, covered in beef strips that flies were constantly landing on. When you ordered your food, they'd just dump the contents of the foil onto the pan and cook it a few minutes. The food was delicious but it made every single one of us GIs sick. I've been told that pork kept under those conditions would have been FAR worse.

On a related note, the Bible says not to eat shellfish. Why? Jewish people have a high rate of allergy to shellfish. So ancient Jew number one scarfs down a few oysters, breaks out in hives or some other terrible reaction, and Jew number two goes "Shit! God must not want us to eat those!" The "stupid" religious food edicts were put there for a reason.

sorry, but you don't need to eat a lot of meat to be considered a carnivore. About 10~15% or your entire diet, to be exact. That's about 1 meal of meat every 3 days.
>> ????? & ?????
Eating dog meat is illegal in South Korea, however , where there is demand there is usually supply and that is the case here. There are so called 'dog farms' that exclusively breed dogs to be slaughtered and eaten, and it is unfortunate. Since I don't live there, I can't say how wide-spread the practice is or why it is so difficult to crack down on it, but I am half korean and I feel it is an awful practice. (Not necessarily because the dogs are eaten but because the majority of these 'farms' mistreat the dogs as badly if not worse than many cow and pig farms.)
To answer your question, yes, it is true, but it's not common practice. It's not something every asian family does. My mother and her entire family (and since her family name is Kim, that's A LOT of people) do not and have never eaten dog meat.

The Lakota hold the dog in high reverence (in Lakota lore, the dog was the only animal that stood by man when all other animals turned against him), but they also eat dog, since it was the first animal they domesticated.

Those aren't the only kinds of teeth a human has, fuckhead. Humans have teeth built for what they are: omnivores. We can eat both plants and meat, some merely chooose to *gasp* not eat meat! Oh no, how horrible! Stfu, it's more steak for your fat ass. Enjoy your Fatkins diet.

Poster wasn't saying we're herbivores, just not full-fledged carnivores.
>> Anonymous
Dudes, animals are here for people to eat. It's people and their emotions that make us get attached to cute animals and make them house pets.

Also, since we're omnivores, we're SUPPOSED to eat both veggies and meat. You get sick and weak without both, and you have to go off on some dumb diet plan in order to get all the vitamins you need. You start taking all these pills for things you were SUPPOSED to get in your meatly diet, but if you miss out on the meat you miss out on those vitamins.

Foolish, foolish herbivores.

No need to force people to eat meat if they dont want to, who are you? The meat-forcerer?
>> Anonymous
>>92621
ROFL @ meat-forcerer. Way to go tacking on two suffixes there.

No, all I'm saying is that you're SUPPOSED to eat meat to get all the vitamins you need. Whether or not you do is up to you, but by not doing so you put extra strain on your body and extra stress in your life to go out and find all those nutrients you could have easily found in a T-bone steak.
>> Anonymous
>>92623

If we were struggling for survival yes, but these days you can get those extra nutrients some other way so eating meat is not strictly necessary. Which is great because it conserves more energy. Personally I need meat, but some people dont and I know some healthy vegetarians, so it cant be that bad.
>> Anonymous
>>92624
It's not bad. I haven't eaten meat in years and I'm healthier now than when I ate meat. I also don't take any vitamins or anything, the stuff I eat gives me all I need. I don't care if people around me eat meat, so long as they don't bitch about me not eating meat.

http://www.geocities.com/yoons_choi/kaps.html

According to these sites, which both seem credible (although, granted, the second one is a Humane Society-like organization and therefore biased.)

But I think the point has been made that it all boils down to culture. Some say it's fine to eat horse meat, cow meat, or cat meat. Some would take serious issue with eating ponies or cows or kitties. C'est la vie.
>> ????? & ?????
>>92620
You do NOT get 'sick and weak' without both. No nutritionist would agree with anything you've said.
If you are in a situation where every meal could be your last and you are malnourished and always hungry, yes, you need the nutrients and vitamins from meat. But, unlike cats, who NEED meat to be healthy (because they go blind otherwise), we can be perfectly healthy without it. I'm 22 and I've eaten meat all my life. It's when I realized how easy it is to not eat meat and still be healthy that I decided to stop. For most of us, it is a _choice_, not a necessity, and to argue otherwise is to exercise in denial. (Unless you can rationalize arguing against anatomy, physiology, chemistry and human biology.)
Yes, human beings have canines, and canines are designed for eating meat and not plant matter. But human beings also have large brains that are, apparently, designed for solving problems and making dreams come true. (See: Air planes. People weren't given wings, but they were given the ability to create them. Also, see: submarines, space shuttles, air conditioning, mosquito repellent, toilet paper.)
If you have regular access to a computer and the internet, odds are you do not live in a world where eating meat is for survival. It's for pleasure.

But mmm. Steak and chicken every now and then. Delicious.
>> Anonymous
>>92633

And its a stupid reason for making a choice?

Where do you live? Unless it's a tree somewhere, you had to have someone cut down trees, turn rocks into gravel for morter/bricks, mine metal for wires, burn fossil fuels/dam rivers/cap geysers for the electricity. All of this took away habitat from other animals and plants. Your farms where you grow your food? Unless you are a pure forager, you have to convert land and MAKE it grow food that is suitable for your needs. And you have to stop other things (bugs, varmits, etc...) from eating it first. What about their food and habitat?

Don't think "I don't eat meat anymore, this makes me one with nature".

The utterly intolerable aspect of the trade in dog flesh, at least in Korea, is that the dogs are systematically tortured in the belief that this "enhances" the taste and makes it an "aphrodisiac". Their legs are broken with iron bars and they are electrocuted, in full view of the next batch.
Also, the idea that this is a traditional practice is apparently a 1980s invention, depicting a desparation measure as a cultural luxury when an improving economy enabled people to afford the meat of true livestock.
The Korean consumer of dogflesh is typically an affluent businessman desperately trying to make his piggly wiggly dick stand proud of his pubes.
I can't even bear to hear what they do to cats, nor do I need to as the very concept is abhorrent. The humane slaughter of dogs in times of famine is potentially justifiable, and the consumption of horses providing they are not reared for that purpose is no worse than rendering them into glue.
A grade 4 glioma for all torturers of animals and consumers of cats.

Why is eating cats so intolerable? They are an animal, lots of people eat animals, why are cats, ridiculously common and overpopulated as they are, so taboo for you? Cause they are cute? Cows can be cute, pigs can be cute.

Why should horses not be reared to be eaten?

It just seems like hypocrisy, unless you are a vegetarian anyway and think everyone else should be one, and that just makes you an asshole.

I agree butchered animals should be killed humanly, but to limit the kind of animals butchered besides by endagerment or other uses (horseshoe crabs and their use in cancer treatment) is stupid.
