what does /an/ think of cesar millan, the "dog whisperer"? i watch his show sometimes, and it looks like his techniques work pretty well. he seems to make enough sense with that whole pack leader business and such things.

Months ago, what you posted would cause shitstorms on /an/ with one lot saying HE'S A FAGGOT ALPHA ROLLS DON'T WORK and the other lot saying "oh it works, but it should be a last resort".

It works pretty well.

People need to learn that dogs feel much better when treated liked dogs (and not like little princes), and that means lots of exercise (= hunting substitution & instinct release) and some rules (= pack structure). A dog does not need ultimate freedom, his humans food, his humans bed, his humans whole attention. A dog does not feel bad when it's not the leader. It feels secure -- ar least when the leader is confident and secure. However, without leader the dog needs to be leader himself and decide too many things in this complex human world: "Can I eat this trash? Is it save to be on the street now? Is this running child prey? Is this noisy machine dangerous?!" This leads to stress, aggression and often dangerously wrong decisions.

Some people think that you abuse your dogs when you establish yourself as alpha dog. That is wrong. Being a good leader means being calm and confident, not aggressive. Screaming or beating means that you are not in control, in other words: Not the leader.

If you are a good, calm and confident leader, who establishes some basic rules, your dog will move much more relaxed though this world.

Here's the problem: During the show the message "Don't try this at home, contact a professional" pops up. Of course people see that, yet think "Wow that looks awesome, I'll try it myself!" Suddenly every hick that wants to 'alpha roll' or otherwise bully their dog into submission and watching Caesar is the perfect excuse.

>>302423
* not saying that Caesar promotes animal abuse, seems to me that there are a lot of people out there who intensionally misinterperate the whole alpha roll technique and just beat on their dogs.

I didn't watch his show. I met this fierce dog barking at me once, I growled back(slightly audible) showing my canine teeth. The bitch submitted, shit was so cash.

But these people abuse their dogs with Millan or without.... and will find any excuse for it.

People get all bent outta shape over the technique, but it's not like viewers are told to try it themselves.

I personally think what he does wonderful, and I'm glad he brought i to the public. Although his techniques are nothing new to me - living on a farm on and off you learn to treat animals as animals and as they are treated naturally. But now that more people are aware of how to naturally train their pets.

my sister babies her dog like something sick, and lets her do whatever she wants. The little fuck is such a nervous retard all the time though, she pees whenever someone scolds her for doing something bad. we don't even yell at her, we just say no and send her to her kennel. i guess that's a lack of security in not knowing who the pack leader is in the family? :\

Funny how it applies to everything.

dude's a fucking idiot, a made-for-tv-pseudobehaviorist. He's a showman, not a trainer, and his idiotic methods have proven to yeild nothing more than short-term effects. There are pending lawsuits from dissatisfied customers, and the fact that he uses alpha rolls demonstrates that his methods are about 40 years behind the times.

So what... America, land of lolsuits.

Of course the method only works short time, if the owner falls back into old habits! This is not about changing the dog, but changing the owner.

Dog training works with both, rewards and limitations. BOTH. The rewards are the much more common part, but you can't teach a dog not to be aggressive towards childring only by positive reinforcement.

Under normal circumstances no owner ever needs to subdue his dog by physical means. By supplying food and establishing certain rules (as: Down! This is my sofa!) the dogs understands very well that the owner is the pack leader. However, Millan usually visits "problem cases" with little canine tyrants. If a dog is use to be #1, you might need to be a bit more physical (pushing and holding the dog down, grabbing the nose) to make an example. This doesn't mean beating the dog into submission or anything similar! People who beat their dogs are idiots who lack impulse control and should be beaten, too.

God forbid you treat an animal like an animal.

No, we actually DO mean "roll" as in flip the dog over on its back.

My brother's dog utterly refused to obey his GF. They walked him, trained him, gave him treats, showed him the roll of paper, took him to socialisation and training classes- nothing worked. The animal adored her, but he utterly refused to do anything she wanted him to do. Since the dog is heug and she's kinda tiny, that's a big problem. Finally, she grabbed him by the collar and put him flat on his side on the ground. She didn't hurt him, but she didn't let him up until he started whining in submission.

Since then the dog has been calm, obedient, and much more relaxed with his role in the family pack. The GF did not hurt the animal by holding him down and she only needed to do it once and quite briefly at that (I was there). And she takes him to training and obedience classes and they do quite well together. He just needed to be shown who was boss and it was much easier than the traditional way, i.e beating the crap out of him.

Cesar Millan developed his technique as a means of survival while incarcerated in a Mexican prison.

No, he's not an idiot. He's a regular guy like any of us who happen to have a different perspective since he came here illegally. He saw how Americans pamper and spoil the shit out of their dogs until they don't know what the hell they are anymore; dog, human, pet, animal, whatever.

Cesar is hardly anyone that I would put in the same category as say.... Steve Irwin. Steve was in fact a professional and he knew what the fuck he was doing, he came into that world with his parents doing the same thing.
Cesar grew up on a farm with a bunch of stray dogs. He simply observed how wild dogs behave, and applied it to the pampered dogs of America. Cesar's methods are not new nor innovative - dogs were treated like that once upon a time, but as our lives got busier, we forgot that our dogs are dogs and not another part of the "family", not a child, not another human.
And just like any animal, including Humans, we don't like instability. We have a way to voice our discontent and do something about it. Dogs can only take it out in violence, interactiveness, depression, or any other typical symptom he treats.

He's famous because he's made us realize again how to treat our dogs, not because of what he does.

And who the fuck cares if he has lawsuits? You really think that it's his fault? It's something the owners are doing wrong, because his dogs obey him perfectly, as do the dogs he is called in to see. It's when he leaves, it's a whole different story, and some people just don't have the balls to actually stick to the training.

Basically, it's grabbing the dog and flipping it either onto it's side or back in one swift movement without hurting it, and holding it there until it submits.
