I like tegus.

One is crawling on me right now.

What's the more docile species of Tegu again?

Argentine. Tupinambis merianae.

Mine is a badass White-head line Argentine. The only thing not so badass about him is that he took a 7 month hibernation.

Very nice animals; used to have a couple, but they were extremely aggressive (and yes it was merianae, not nigropunctatus).

But I prefer watermonitors :p

Did you feed them in their enclosure? It's not very typical for Args to be aggressive, even if wild caught.

Did you mean T. teguixin (Colombian)? T. nigropunctatus seems to be an invalid name now. T. teguixin is a bitch species though. I bought an Arg online and got ripped off with a Colombian who was impossible to tame down in any way. He was eventually bought up by someone who wanted a pissy lizard.

Monitors are nice, but accommodating them at adulthood is difficult. Especially Water Monitors. CB tegus also tend to be docile straight from the egg these days, so I didn't go through with my original plan of a Savannah Monitor.

Besides that, Args are fucking smart. I've never seen a lizard show this much intelligence.

Argus' for me all the way. Though..If I let one crawl on me it would probably bite my face off.

How much do these things usually cost?

I assume the best, or probably only place, to buy these are from professional breeders?

Probably a couple going down the throat too. That's when he was small enough to eat crickets. Since early May when he woke up, he's grown by 4-5 inches and gained a ton of weight. I'm feeding him raw turkey, fuzzies, and large roaches now.

From a decent breeder, about $120-$150 depending on size, availability, and the time of year. Summer is the best time to get one since they're hatching out for two of the major breeders: Sisco Reptiles and Varnyard Herps. I got mine from Sisco.

They're the top breeders. You can trust them to get you a healthy, docile lizard.

Some alternate tegus like Reds, Blues, Whiteheads, and Giants will cost you more though.

That's how I got my Argentine from Colombia. There are a lot of sketchy fuckers on there. I'd play it safe and get it shipped from a reputable breeder than get it from some sack of shit.

Rainforest Reptiles is a good example of a sack of shit. Never buy anything from that guy.

How do they compare to other big lizards like savannah monitors? Those sav monitors can be vicious bastards.

I'd put them on the level of a docile cat or dog. You'd have to neglect them completely to make them vicious.

Mine is personable. He associates my presence with feeding time, but after he eats, he doesn't mind crawling and laying on me for an hour or so. I haven't been ever been bitten by him out of defense.

Keep them fed and interact with them daily, and you'll be hard pressed to find a more docile lizard.

Also, 5 feet and 15-20 lbs for an adult male, so you get the monitor size without the monitor aggression, because tegus aren't monitors.
