Hey /an/, I just got a pet horned lizard, does anyone have any name suggestions? If you post ends in 72 it's automatically named what you posted.

Pic related: It's him.

don't bother naming it, you will kill it within weeks.

So, how are you going to get the ants it needs to live? It's fully possible to keep them alive and healthy as long as you're willing to either go out and catch hundreds of ants every day or pay money to have thousands shipped to you a week.

I'm one of the worst examples of impulsive collectors, but even I know my limits. Horned lizards are that limit.

I'll help you out though cause I know how fucking sweet these things are.

That will give you most of the necessary information, as well as links to ant suppliers.

Keep in mind that this is an absurd commitment you're attempting to undertake. Phrynosoma is the epitome of high maintenance.

While I agree with the high maintenance bit they only need about 200-500 ants a week, each, less so if supplementing with crickets. Which averages to about $100 a month. It's not a whole lot more than the cost of feeding a large parrot... except with parrots the food is easier to keep fresh and doesn't sting so bad.

I kept three pairs of desert horned lizards for about half a year. There were several nests around my property, and I had a mini vac. I still had to take about half an hour every day or every other day collecting the things. There were occasional bites, and I had to deal with dust and dirt. Sometimes after that work the horned lizards weren't that hungry., and would only eat a few or none. In that case I would have to go through the trouble of getting the ants out of the cage. It was way too much effort and tediousness for a bunch of lizards who would run around and fart in each others faces at all hours of the day. I wound up letting them free out in the desert, and I was glad to be rid of them. They were cool for all of two weeks after that they just get annoying. Plus the constant farting was horrible. I had to air out their cage and my room once or twice a day.

these guys are fun little pets, allthough i didn't feed them ants, but stuck to crickets and meal worms when i could *mealworms were far easiest*

unfortantly in the state of Arizona i find out there illegal to own as pets and was hit with a fine..

They would have eventually wasted away and died anyhow unless you've discovered am alternative way to provide the necessary formic acid and organic compounds found in the ants they're adapted to feeding on. Somehow I doubt that.

Most aren't illegal in Arizona. You just need a valid state hunting license and need to adhere to the bag and possession limits. I think it's 4 Regal Horned Lizards (the ones you find in the Superstitions with the full crown of horns) per household you can keep legally.

Nearly every reptile here is legal to collect and keep with a hunting license apart from Desert Tortoises, Narrow-Headed Garter Snakes, Twin Spotted Rattlesnakes, Gila Monsters, Massasuagas, and Ridge-Nosed Rattlesnakes.

You must have collected a Flat-Tailed Horned Lizard to get that fine, because everything other species is legal to keep up to a certain number. Shit sucks for you but the lizard got lucky cause you would've killed it with that horrible diet.

Funny thing is that it's illegal to release animals you've collected and kept in Arizona. They don't want you introducing pathogens into the wild, so your only options are to either keep it, gift it, or surrender it to whatever organization. You can't sell any of them out of state (not sure about in-state) without a shitload of problems.
