does anyone else find captive dolphins really depressing?
they are like the epitome of freedom and we lock them up in a concrete, chlorinated tank to perform circus tricks to entertain us??wtf; that's liek pretty sick.

plus captive dolphins live like 1/4 their natural life spans, source: www.orcanetwork.org, www.captiveanimals.org

I feel the same way about whales

Yeah, large sea creatures should be able to swim free in the oceans :<

Don't really like the idea of wild animal in captivity, well in zoos/crappy safari parks, but just something worse about keeping dolphins/whales/large sharks/seals etc in captivity.

just look at this thing! this USED to be a beautiful, big orca whale. in captivity, it's a slug, just sitting in its tank, bored as hell, waiting for the next 'shamu show' to start.

what a shame, really. look what sea world has done to these intelligent animals =/

What whale is that? I know it isn't Tilikum or Keiko, unless the image is reversed.

It's sad but what can we do about it.

> chlorinated tank

>> Anonymous
>>312684

yeah its not tillikum or keiko; its actually ulises at sea world san diego

Yes, because being a dolphin getting regular food, protection from predators, and medical care would really suck ass.

In the wild dolphins have regular access to food (there are a lot of fish in the ocean), have no major predators apart from sharks (which actually avoid them unless they become sick or lost because a pod of dolphins will easily kill a shark), and don't give a flying fuck about medical care.

all dolphins should be locked up, trouble making bastards

It's especially sad when they're captive in a little pond right next to the ocean.

It's more like being confined to a hospital ward. Little space to move, same thing day in and day out. Your only living interaction is either your wardmate, handlers, and perhaps seeing people you could never hope to understand through a looking glass. You control nothing, not even whether you live or die. Free and easy health care, food and protection is a paltry compensation for these things.

In short, you're a cucumber.

they taste great with soy sauce and wasabi. Best when served freshly killed.

This reminds me of the little known fact (yes, actual scientific fact you can find in science books) that sperm whales can kill you with their sonar. The fucker's got lethal sonic weaponry built in their head.

That is the strangest lie I have ever heard.

Hardly a lie. He just doesn't seem to be aware of the study that debunked the idea:
http://scienceline.org/2008/05/12/ask-locke-whale/
(Admittedly they say that sperm whales might do the job with a different type of sound rather than ultrasound.)

I have very utilitarian views of animals/people, but capturing whales and dolphins for entertainment is just fucking wrong.

ya & theres like no education at sea world.. (who cares?? but thats what these aquariums are supposed to be doing.. teaching people about animals..) Anyway, yah i went to seaworld a while ago and it was such BS! they are just like "shamu loves belly rubs.." and i was thinking "shamu would LOVE to rip that trainers face off" ha

did you guys hear about those whale attacks..idk i guess they happen on a pretty regular basis.
