Normally cats are pretty smart about knowing what's good and what isn't for them. They aren't like dogs, which will eat anything, even if it's poisonous to them. However, why is it that a cat will seem to enjoy cow's milk even though apparently it gives them diarrhoea? Surely it can't be an instinctual thing, seeing as they can hardly milk cows in the wild.

Because it's milk and most mammals drink milk

Not all cats are lactose intolerant, and their intolerance actually varies by a fair bit. My cat bizarrely stopped being lactose intolerant. I don't know how or why, it's not like they were feeding him gallons of full cream milk at the shelter.

My cat hasn't had any ill effects from it, although I try not to give him it because I heard it can cause harm.
