Hey guys I just found this in my back yard when I was watering plants, any idea what kind of spider it is and what its guarding?

That is a black harvesting recluse, and they are completely harmless. Those cream balls are a fungus that it cultivates to keep it's web smelling fresh. You should take one and put it in your sock drawer.

OP here, It looks like a black widow to me from this picture

Does it have red on it's back? If it did, it would be visible in the picture. That is clearly a black harvesting recluse.

Some kind of cobweb weaver, I don't think this is a widown, but look on its underside to find out for sure. If it has a red hourglass or any red markings underneath it, it's a black widow.
Did you find it underneath something, or hiding in a hole with a big web around it? Depending on how it acts, it could be a common house spider.

I'll need more information to ID it properly, like size and where this picture was taken.

>>Those cream balls are a fungus that it cultivates to keep it's web smelling fresh. You should take one and put it in your sock drawer.

This is correct. You should put one of those balls in your sock drawer, the smell is actually there to chase away large moths that could damage the spider's web. They're like natural mothballs.

spider eggs kill it
>> Anonymous
Given the web's messy construction, it looks like a black widow guarding some egg sacs. You can't tell from the picture, but if you can see a red hourglass on its underside, that cinches it.

If you decide to kill it, spray it and the egg sacs with bug spray--otherwise if you try to smash the egg sacs the little spider babies will try to come out and get into everything.

looks like a brown widow

I found it under the thing I use to wrap the hose around, on the side of the house.

I'll go see if I can get better pictures.

Kill it with fire.

I went out there to take pictures, but the spider was gone and two of the balls were too. I'll see if its there in a bit.

found one of the balls on the floor and picked it up, it was kinda squishy and crunchy. Kind of like semi soggy cereal.

Add milk and consume. post pics.

I want awesome spider-cultivated fungus! :O

judging by the multiple egg sacs, i'd say it's a species of Latrodectus (a widow).

You idiots, only males have the red hourglass. They are also much smaller. The females are bigger, plain black and less poisonous (although still deadly).

That spider would have eaten the male after mating. That's why they call it a BLACK WIDOW, OH WOW I NEVER WONDERED WHY EH EH.

Stupid Americans.

Its a widow. And the dumbfuck who said it has an hourglass on its back needs to get his eyes checked. The hourglass appears on the UNDERSIDE of the abdomen. Wikipedia it, stupid.

That looks like a happy black friend-spider. (They love it when you scratch their chins.)
>> Anonymous
>>166786
wow, epic fail here

females get the hourglass, males are not even black, and are not dangerous to humans, all spiders are poisonous. yes they do eat the males though so you are almost kinda right.

When I was a kid, my friends and I used to dare each other to eat those things for toys and shit(thinking they were spider eggs)

OH I LOVE THOSE SPIDERS! I had one as a semi-pet when I was a kid. I mean it wasn't officially our pet, it just lived in my tree house and was my friend. but then I got allergic and had these bad red rashes and sores and stuff after holding it. It was really painful and nasty. My mom thought it was something about the house, asbestos or something, and we had to move. I didn't dare to tell her about my friend Timothy, I was afraid she'd kill him. So we just moved away and I never saw him again. :'( I miss him...

Why was a non-American telling Americans about black widows? Black widows are fucking native to North America.

Thank you to the people who corrected the tard's wrong information.

But unfortunately, the males are actually poisonous as well, but females are more so.

Picture: male is small brown one

looks like a larder/pantry/food.
not eggs. foods. and it is not a widow.
>> Bikke the Pirate
Not all widows have a proper hourglass. They do tend to be shinier than what's in the pic, though. Many have a couple of unconnected spots rather than the hourglass shape, but the perfect ones are gorgeous. I try and relocate those as far from the house as I can, though...
>> Anonymous
Black Widows are the only spiders I kill. Fortunately, I don't really have any, because there's a shitload of K. Hibernalis everywhere, and they directly compete with them for food. They even make similar webs.
>> Anonymous
It's a widow, trust me. I have many in my house. Little ones with the hourglass clearly visible on the underside.

They like to drop down from the ceiling in front of me while I eat or do homework.

"Lalala, eating cereal... Huh? What's tha-OH SHIT WTF!"

reese for breakfast O_o
>> Anonymous
That's a black widow. We used to have a shitload of them around the outside of my house when I lived in Florida. Typically they won't bite unless provoked...so don't piss her off.

In all seriousness, I'd smash the fucker and her eggs. *hates spiders, especially ones with neurotoxin as venom*
>> Anonymous
>>167661
As opposed to necrotoxin?
Which in my opinion is much worse in that as well as probably killing you, your skin falls off.
