my friend had one, he'd bring him to the pet store we worked at as it was closing and let him run free. he was like a horse galloping through the aisles, so crazy. one time while i was on break, the dog walks up to me and puts his head in my lap, accidentally winding me. totally sweet dog, though.

They don't live too long though. Shame, they're great.

Little known fact that the irish wolfhounds of today arent true ones. the originals were much bigger but went extinct a few hundred years ago. the current ones are other dogs that were bred to look like them.

How big did they get exactly?

How much do they eat?

we have a year old irish wolfhound

>>173173

It was something like standing 7 ft tall on it's hind legs and a good 10 inches taller than the modern-day Irish WH.

They almost became extinct when Ireland had no more bears or wolves for the WH to pwn. So dedicated breeders bred the remaining with the Deerhound and that's why it looks how it does today, what with the coat type (more wiry now) and the tail and the obvious down-size).

They eat a shitload. Expect just as much if not more than a St. Bernard.

Only downfall of these guys is their expected life-span, something like 7 or 8 years. :(

You mean like 10 inches taller at the shoulder, or standing on his hind legs?

Yeah,I can imagine they'd eat a lot. They seem like nice dogs, though. Very gentle.

I'm just conjuring up random things I read a while ago, but I'm pretty sure they were something nuts like 43" at the withers, as opposed to 35 max nowadays.

Shit. Like this guy.

A friend of mine had one. I used to be afraid of dogs, so the first time I met this one, I was terrified.
In two seconds though, I realized this was one of the most gentle dogs in the world.
Only problem is they sometimes forget how big they are when they want tpo play or cuddle.

Yeah, use to have three of these at one time... They became very hostile and eager to jump at the two mare shires I now have, so my family sold them.

Very gentle (unless you try taking food from them ;] at least I would get a cold, threatening stare from one of them). Out in the yard, I would rest my head over one of the irish wolfhounds and sleep for hours or pull the big clumps of hair they shed.

They're the best!

Oh - and all three of them ate their own shit... I know the dog I have (a goldendoodle) now doesn't, though :S.

42" is really huge for a dog, it would probably have very serious problems with its hips and joints. I think the breed that the Irish Wolfhound came from was called a 'Cu', and was allegedly 'enormous'. Although who knows how healthy and short lived a dog of that size would have been. Irish wolfhounds are supposed to be really wonderful, gentle dogs, but they chase shit like crazy, because they're sight hounds.

Strong as fuck too, they fought lions in gladiator rings.

I could see them coming out well against lions or whatever if there were a couple of them. But one-on-one would be pretty badass.
