what the fuck kind of moth is this? If it even is one..

I was lying on my bed watching TV, and i looked beside me and SHIT THERE IT IS! It's about the size of one of my dwarf hamsters. Huge for a moth (around here..)

I live in the south of England.

I also have a fear of moths..
>> Anonymous
The internet is so cool.

I can see a moth that lives all the way in England!

This was in England?

HOLY FUCK HOLY FUCK HOLY FUCK

Fear of moths? But they're so pretty and they don't hurt you D:

It looks like some sort of Hawk Moth, but I don't know if you guys would get those over there. We get tons of them in the midwest states.

I just hate their fluffy bodies and thier stupid flapping wings, and the way they'll travel miles to find a light..they frustrate me more than scare me..but i just hate them!

this moth has taken this hate to a new level..im pretty sure its safe to say it scared me

Dude it's obviously a gigantica motheus, very poisonous and very aggressive. I recommend evacuating immediately--when you see one, it's too late. They're massing outside your house in search of your sweet, sweet tender manflesh.

well..I found my cat, and he took it down in a second.. was really proud of him!
it put up a good fight after it was on the ground, but my cat was a badass and tried to eat it.

I stopped him cause i wasnt sure if it was poisonous or something..

Oh that. That's a black widow vampire moth, Sanguophilia mactans. Discovered in 1838 by Col. Michael Weir-Brightsgrove (1805-1838).
Not that OP will be able to read this, because he's probably dead by now.

Does anyone seriously know what it is? It had 4 wings..which I have never seen before!

4 wings? Something from the Apocalypse.

Something is wrong with your head then. They're about the most harmless (both in the sense of biting you or something, cause that's impossible, or being household pests; they just fly around or sit on a wall or window) insects there are. They're basically nocturnal butterflies. Just with (mostly) less vibrant colors and a fat and fluffy body.

>>286263

They just make my skin crawl. It's usually because when I leave the window open at night (i have a small, hot bedroom) they fly in, and go nuts at the light, which makes it flicker..
And if i dont notice them they usually end up flying at me.. and the usual "eww insect" thing sets in.
I just hate how their wings feel..

Like I said..less of a fear..more of a frustration.

>>"eww insect"

Childish bullshit; you should finally outgrow this. Anyone who hasn't should be fucking ashamed.

So people outgrow their childish bullshit fears of everything?
So when you hit 30 you should no longer be afraid of anything?

Sounds like you need to grow up a little..People have their fears, and most don't outgrow them.

>>So when you hit 30 you should no longer be afraid of anything?

No, people should outgrow their fears of childish bullshit. It's more or less OK to be afraid of spiders or snakes, because some of them can painfully bite your ass and even seriously poison you. Even a fear of heights kind of makes sense, because when you fall from a large height you're gonna break your bones, right? Perhaps even die.

Same goes for being grossed out by some shit. It makes sense to find a fly icky because it eats shit, dead meat, rotting vegetables, and so on; thus, it is dirty.

But being grossed out by, or scared of an insect you know is clean (it lands on flowers and sucks nectar) and harmless? That's fucking silly.

'Bugs' are cool. I used to be afraid of them, and this isn't to say that I like having spiders crawling around on me or moths hanging around my house, but now I've come to terms with them. Of course if I find a giant moth in my bathroom fluttering around near my head in the middle of the night I still grab a rolled up newspaper and beat it like an angry god until it is so overkilled that it's fossilized into the wall.

Oddly enough my mild phobia dissipated after I watched videos on youtube of people with large, poisonous spiders taking them out of their tanks and holding them. Check this out:

Fucking idiot. Doesn't sound like your "mild phobia dissipated" at all. A sane person would catch it and let it out, and not beat it into a pulp.
>> Anonymous
>>286309

A 'sane' person realizes that not everything can live; there is a difference between being being able to co-exist with animals and being total bleeding heart who can't stand to see anything die. If you have an ant problem in your house would you try to move them somewhere else? The moment another being attempts to invade your territory there is nothing wrong with ridding yourself of them, that is natural, it's not egregious in any way.

Go suck off your dog and try to stop getting pissed off every time something feels pain. Life goes on.

I'm not gonna rage at this comment, because I understand where you're coming from: I might have sounded like some idiot from PETA or some shit.

Thus, let me clarify what I meant:

If you've got a problem with a household pest, you get rid of it. You kill flies, you kill ants, you kill cockroaches. Some people kill spiders because they're scared of them, I usually let them be or catch them and throw them out, depends on where I find them.

What I meant was, that it isn't normal to >>grab a rolled up newspaper and beat it like an angry god when encountering a moth. If you're too lazy or too grossed out by it to catch and release it instead of killing it, then you have my sympathy, but I wouldn't call you insane just yet. If however, you react in a way described about (as in going amuck), then there's something wrong with you. I don't so much have a problem with an animal (however beautiful it may be) getting killed, as I rage at you being a sorry-ass motherfucker.

Thankyou /an/ that's all I wanted to know!
I didn't really expect a moth love/hate/kill/release thread to start!

I'll have to admit that seeing this type of moth freaked me out a little as I have never seen one this big and had no idea if it was even a moth!

OP again, sorry, one more question. Would a moth ever lay eggs in your house?
One thing that makes me cautious of 'creepy crawlies' Is this factor!

I dont really want 50 of them flying out from beside my bed :D that would scar me for life!

Obviously I'm not knowledgable in these things, I'm just trying to get a better understanding :)

I'm guessing they probably wouldn't.. but I just thought I'd ask!

First, let me facepalm at this "scarring you for life", you goddamn pussy. As regards your question: most (I think it's most, but at least moths are in this group) insects are holometabolic. This means, that larvae hatch from the eggs.

As far as I know, the larvae of moths eat leaves, so you'd see them weeks, if not months, eating one of your houseplants before they became "real" moths. That being said, I don't think a moth would lay eggs inside, and even if it did, you'd probably spot the eggs or at least the larvae long before having to deal with adult moths.

Adding to that, the chance that you have plants in your house which will be accepted by native moth caterpillars is quite low, because most people keep tropical or at least special/rare indigenous plants inside. A moth like that poplar hawk-moth will prefer a poplar tree to lay its eggs on, rather than some unsignificant house plant.

Also, if you named your picture "shitfuckhugemoth", you should probably see a real huge moth.
Pic related.

Venemoth. A large, lavender, moth-like Pokémon. It is rare in the wild, but can also be obtained by raising the more common Venonat to level 31. Its wings are covered in extremely toxic, dust-like scales. These scales are color-coded to indicate the effect they will have upon coming into contact with a living creature, darker colours meaning poison, and lighter colours meaning paralysis. Venomoth is similar to Butterfree in that they both flap their wings to release toxic powders. However, Venomoth seems to be the more dangerous of the two, as it is described as scattering its toxins with every flap of its wings. Much like Venonat, Venomoth is nocturnal and feeds upon small insects.
