They did this until all of the cats went through the non-shocked tube. When the butterflies hatched from those caterpillars, they instantly remembered which tube to go. So, even though their body was almost totally decontructed, this information survived somehow. I shat some bricks when I first read about this.
Also, note how some pupae nervously waggle around when disturbed. It shows that they keep some muscular tissue to defend themselves.
