When in season these spiders are everywhere ay. There is rediculous amounts of them. They dont usually get as big as op's pic but they are relatively harmless. The males grow to like 1 10th of the size of the females. Not really scary coz they never move, they have huge webs of really thick nature, and one of the only species to create their free hanging web in a three dimensional pattern. Atleast they are big enough to spot easily, the little ones you cant see are the ones to be scared of.

umm....what are these spiders called?

That one's a Golden Orb spider. They make stunningly beautiful golden webs. I had a friend come over from America to visit me, and I was surprised when she told me they were supposed to be as venonmous as a Redback. I'm still not sure what study she got that from, but I am sure that she is a thorough pussy. Great lady, but still a pussy. She was terrified of going with metres of their (really quite stunning) webs. She insisted that it wasn't that she was arachnophobic, it was because Australian spiders are so terrifying.

Like I said, a pussy. It's only a friggin' orb spider!

Look closer. It's an optical illusion. This is the second or third time these photos have been posted but no one seems to be noting the information that accompanys them.

The spider is big, true, but the bird is extremely tiny. According to the various news sites carrying these photos, that bird is a Chestnut Breasted Mannikin and they have an approximate length of ten centimetres. If you compare the length of the bird to the length of the spider's body, you'll end up with slightly less than half. A spider that has a five centimetre body (excluding legs) is an impressive beastie, but it's by no means HEUG. What is impressive is that the web was able to cope with something as heavy and powerful as a bird- even a tiny finch such this one.
