Niggerhusky guy, I've seen you posting around for a while. I'm curious as to what food you give your dog and if you switched at any age or for any reason.

Eh, since I keep naming myself... a temp tripfaggotry is in order then back to normal.

He ate Solid Gold Barking at the Moon for a while. He's been switched to a raw food diet using prey model (not BARF, which really isn't ideal, but easier and probably better than most commercial food).

So he eats the bones, mucles, organs of everything except humans basically. I've considered feeding some humans to him though.

Regular appearances are deer, cow, duck, rat, chicken, turkey, pig, fish (no pacific west salmon or trout though...) and whatever else I get ahold of.

Pic is his coat after raw fed diet.

I've been sick so I'm around more than usual. And so I'm bored enough to type all this.

Prey model is basically uh, like 70% Raw meaty bones, 15% muscle, 15% organ. Basically. It's not exact science, you don't balance each meal, you balance it over time. Some days it's 60 20 20, other it's 80 10 10, sometimes no organs, blah blah blah.

I also feed him my dinner scraps, but this is not good if you're a unhealthy eater (tsk tsk). Since meat in front of me disappears within minutes, he doesn't get any leftover meat, but I give him whatever vegetables are left of my salad, or steamed veggies, etc.

Common sense applies here. Look up what you can't feed your dog first.

I'd toss him a fruit every once in a while whenever whim tells me to. But it's really not that neccessary. But it won't hurt so I figure why not?

That's basically it in a nutshell.

That's a beautiful dog.

Literally every vet I've found around here has two standards. Science Diet and AKC insurance. I've asked if there is anything else they recommend and half say that Science Diet is the best out there, but I'm kind of wary about a product that so many people carry when PetCo and Pets Land do.

Either it's perfect or they just have their hands in every damn vet around here.

I'm looking at various Iams products, even if their practices are more than very cruel.

Thanks and thanks.

I just got my husky from a breeder and they give all their dogs homemade food. I unfortunately can't do that, but I can buy the food I need.

Not to be a dick here (It's hard to correct or explain these things to people without sounding like one) but learn a little bit about nutrition. Flip those bags over and read the labels. Once again since I'm bored and sick I'll save you the trouble.

First thing you need to understand is, dogs are carnivores. I know, it's basic, right? But let's apply this to your food.

For Science Diet, let's look at their "Nature's Best" label as it's the best food they have.

Chicken, Brown Rice, Whole Grain Wheat, Cracked Pearled Barley, Soybean Meal, Chicken Meal, Pork Fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid), Dried Egg Product, Natural Flavor, Whole Grain Oats, Apples, Cranberries, Soybean Oil, Peas, Carrots, Dried Beet Pulp, Iodized Salt, Flaxseed, Broccoli, vitamins (L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate (source of vitamin C), Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin, Folic Acid, Vitamin D3 Supplement), Vitamin E Supplement, Choline Chloride, Taurine, minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite), preserved with Mixed Tocopherols and Citric Acid, Calcium Carbonate, Beta-Carotene, Rosemary Extract.

Let's apply a basic understanding of ingredent lists. It's in order of weight, so the heaviest will be listed first. In this case it's Chicken.

Sounds good right? Nope. Bodies are mostly water, so when you dehydrate it (which the process does in order to turn it into kibble) the weight is significantly less. So we can ignore Chicken and move on to the next few.

Rice, wheat, barley, soybean.

I know, what the fuck, right? Continued.
>> Niggerhusky Guy !!2YW0PJZXbhy
>>211840

Ok now let's look at Iams, what you are considering.

Chicken, Chicken By-Product Meal, Brewers Rice, Corn Meal, Ground Whole Grain Sorghum, Ground Whole Grain Barley, Chicken Fat (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Dried Beet Pulp (sugar removed), Natural Chicken Flavor, Dried Egg Product, Brewers Dried Yeast, Dicalcium Phosphate, Potassium Chloride, Salt, Vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, Beta-Carotene, Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin A Acetate, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate (source of Vitamin B1), Niacin, Riboflavin Supplement (source of Vitamin B2), Inositol, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (source of Vitamin B6), Vitamin D3 Supplement, Folic Acid), Fish Oil (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Flax Meal, Apple Pomace, Dried Carrots, Dried Peas, Choline Chloride, Dried Spinach, Dried Tomato, Minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Manganese Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Potassium Iodide, Cobalt Carbonate), L-Carnitine, Rosemary Extract

Again, remember what I said about chicken? Bump it down 10 places on the weight list. Next you've got Chicken By-product meal. That "meal" part is key- you can assume it's the true weight. But wait, why is Chicken and Chicken By-product listed separate?

By-product is the 4 D's. Dead, Dying, Diseased, Disabled animals. Basically, the animals that die and rot for a while (think, long enough for maggots), diseased with some bad shit, disabled enough to be unfit for human consumption, etc. It's also fats, scraps, everything humans don't want to eat. So your primary ingredent is essentially shit.

The next few are Rice Rice Rice Rice Corn Corn COrn blah blah blah. Shit. Heck, there's even preserved chicken fat. Fat is important, don't get me wrong, but considering the rest of the ingredents....

Also, brewers rice is the lowest, most unhealthy rice there is. And this is their best. And so, it's shit. Continued...

I love it when I see anons who actually know what they're talking about for a change.
>> Niggerhusky Guy !!2YW0PJZXbhy
>>211844

Now, let's do Solid Gold Barking at the Moon.

Salmon Meal | Beef | Potatoes | Potato Protein | Canola Oil | Tomato Pomace | Natural Flavor | Salmon Oil | Choline Chloride | Taurine | Dried Chicory Root | Parsley Flakes | Pumpkin Meal | Almond Oil | Sesame Oil | Yucca Schidigera Extract | Thyme | Blueberries | Cranberries | Carrots | Broccoli | Vitamin E Supplement | Iron Proteinate | Zinc Proteinate | Copper Proteinate | Ferrous Sulfate | Zinc Sulfate | Copper Sulfate | Potassium Iodide | Thiamine Mononitrate | Manganese Proteinate | Manganous Oxide | Ascorbic Acid | Vitamin A Supplement | Biotin | Calcium Panthothenate | Manganese Sulfate | Sodium Selenite | Pyridoxine Hydrochloride | Vitamin B12 Supplement | Riboflavin | Vitamin D Supplement | Folic Acid

First ingredent, Salmon Meal. Remember, meal is it's true weight, not water weight. And it's fish too. Nice!

Second is Beef. Good, but it's not meal, so it's water weight. Bump it down a bit.

Potatoes are good. I mean, really. Just look at the ingredent list. YOU would eat that shit, right? That's good. Dogs don't like to eat crap any more than you do.

So why does everyone vouch for Science Diet? Because they are retards, and Science Diet and Iams are rich as fuck. Most veterinary schools are SPONSORED by Science Diet.

Problem #2- Vets fix your dog, they don't feed your dog. Nutritionists feed your dog. The only course most vets take in nutrition is sponsored by science diet / iams. They are not trying to fuck your dog over, they just are dumb and/or greedy. They need to make money too. So don't get pissed at your vet.

If all else fails, ask me if it's good or just go here and buy the 6 star rated food.

>> Niggerhusky Guy !!2YW0PJZXbhy
>>211856

Another thing to consider is most dogs are allergic to corn and rice, not meat like vets will lead you to believe and make you buy "sensitive stomach" stuff.

You may also note some projectile diarrahea for up to two weeks when switching to high quality food. The reason for this is simple. Try eating mcdonalds for a month. then switch to eating healthy. Watch what your ass does. Your toilet will hate you. So it's normal as they get used to it.

Viola, happy dog. In rare cases, a dog's stomach has been so fucked up by a horrible diet since birth that it can no longer tolerate high quality food and will turn to shit. Shit sucks, then, and try again next dog, and keep feeding your dog that crap.

I think I covered everything and then some. Now excuse me as I go vomit again.

Fukken saved!

I'm going to pick up "Puppies For Dummies" tomorrow and whatever other good books I can at my library.

You're probably one of the few Anons who I'll listen to.
>> Niggerhusky Guy !!2YW0PJZXbhy
>>211827

I don't know what you mean by homemade food, unless you're talking about they cook their own food. I've never understood why people waste time doing that when they can just give the food raw.

But don't you have a butcher anywhere? There should be a ton of butchers in the country (farms, etc). If you live in the city it might take some searching, but even San Francisco has some butchers, and ton of fresh fish.

>>211863

I don't know about Puppies for Dummies, but I do recommend the book "Give your dog a bone." It's excellent for raw feeding. If you won't be doing raw feeding then just look at 6 star foods and don't bother learning too much nutrition.

If it's training you're interested in, then it depends on the breed. Some dogs excel in certain training than others.

I do train Ollie to an extent, but my training is pretty much no-nonsense. I'm not going to make him do anything just so I can have the pleasure of him obeying me.

If they see a reason to obey you, they will. So learn their motivations and they will be obedient when the time is neccessary. When he sleds with me, I only need to tell him where to go, and to slow down or speed up, he's smart enough to make decisions for himself on obstacles so I put my faith in him.

As for dominance... well, toss a coin or ten and maybe it works. I don't employ it, however, as I see no need to. But most people overdo it, or dominate in situations that don't call for it. Really, just control their motivation. I.e. stay a step ahead of the dog. It requires being smarter than your dog and that's beyond most people's intelligence. That's why most people get loyal and dependent dogs and hate Huskies. You'd hate huskies too if you got shown that a dog is smarter than you.
>> Niggerhusky Guy !!2YW0PJZXbhy
>>211875

I'm somewhat joking. But with a naturally obedient dog it's easy. Don't get caught up with the dominance theory, just think.. happy dog is happy owner. But I'm putting my common sense on everyone else, so I can't say that line will work as most people don't have it.

And... remember, when watching Dog Whisperer (if you do) that man is a professional dog rehabilator. You're not. You may feel you can do what he says, or whatever. Don't do it anyway unless you consult a professional. The only thing you should walk away from his show with is, "Postive Energy" and "Excercise the fuck out of your dog".

Boy, I'm overly helpful when I'm sick. I need to get sick less often.

So out of curiosity, where do you go about finding the various preys? I could see checking out a butcher for scraps and bones, but rats? I'd imagine you'd have to be careful about roadkill...

Now you mentioned you had him on this after Solid Gold Barking at the Moon, so I'm guessing that the latter is what you started him on as a puppy?

Regarding feeding him humans, I guess it's good to know you have a potential way to destroy evidence should the need arise...

I also own snakes such as Burmese Pythons and Boa Constrictor Constrictors. Pic related

So I order in bulk from rodentpro.com. In regards of roadkill, dogs aren't picky like cats, they are not opposed to eating slightly old food. That said, I don't feed roadkill. Partly because I live in the city, partly because it just looks freaking nasty and I don't really want to scoop it up.

So I go to the butcher. Look for a mom and pop shop. Make friends with your butcher. A lot of butchers, in my experience, will feed raw. A long time ago, dogs didn't eat kibble. Many places more bound to tradition (mom and pop butcher places with generations invested, for instance) still feed raw.

They might sell you deer, but don't be too open about it. Chicken, Turkey, Beef, etc should be in ready supply. I got 20 pounds of deer meat for 10 dollars.

Turkey necks, backs, thighs... same with chicken are easy. Duck is an easy whole prey to find if you know any hunters. Watch for bb's, though. Your dog doesn't need to eat filet mignon.... just get cheap meat. and make sure they have bones. A whole carcass is easy to feed, but sometimes you need a frankenprey by making your own.

Ungutted fish is easy just check for hooks. Oh, Rabbits are good too. www.rodentpro.com has a ton of whole prey. You can find pigs too, but don't get the very fat animals. Lean animals are good.

I missed one question. If you can start a puppy on raw, do it! You may need to blend the bones, but the earlier you get him eating raw, the better.

Ollie is an adoption. He's not my first husky, though. I've had 4 Labradors, and 3 mutts of various origins. The last mutt I had was a husky mutt, and I loved the personality. So I got a husky, and found they suit me even better. So all my dogs since then have been Malamutes or Siberians.

Pic is Ollie when I adopted him. More in next post.

Not OP.

Hey, I know I already posted this on another thread... but I have a question.

Is it alright to get a dog from Petland? I'm worried about genetic defects, diseases, somewhat lineage, and about them being crazy from being in a kennel for so long.

I already ordered the dog and know I can take care of it, it's just the above that's worrying about it.
>> Niggerhusky Guy !!2YW0PJZXbhy
     File :-(, x)
>>211917

The reason I started him on Solid Gold was because I did not want to make too many changes. He was already stressed from a bad home, jumping from shelter to shelter, little to no time out, little to no attention, and so on. And he moved with me, had to get used to living with me, and whatever else was stressing him. It's also a easy way to see how much he eats to maintain weight. He came to me at 52 pounds, he's 62 now.

So I kept him on kibble until a few months after I adopted him. Then I switched to raw. But if I ever get a puppy again, I'd feed raw right away. It's just easier and better for them.
>> Niggerhusky Guy !!2YW0PJZXbhy
>>211919

I'm popular tonight. I should be charging money for this. Ah well, time is passing quickly today so I don't mind.

Petland buys all their dogs from Backyard breeders. So you will be getting a dog of dubious origins.

If you absolutely have to have a puppy... try to look elsewhere. However, most good breeders will put you on a 1 year waiting list, sometimes more. Sucks, I know. But if you want a perfectly healthy dog with the best possible start on life, that's what I'd do.

Genetically, he's inferior. But I mean, how much does that affect him as a dog? Not always that much. So since you already ordered the dog, well, try to find a better breeder next time. A poor dog somewhere is pumping babies every year of her life to make that dog and now has to pump more to replace it.

If you can't return it... then that's life. Try to find a ethical breeder next time. Or adopt. Believe it or not, there are many perfectly functional and happy Huskies at home. Huskies are nightmares of a puppy, more than most puppies due to their energy level.

And since it's a puppy, it is unlikely it will have any mental issues so you at least have a fresh start there before any damage is done.
>> Niggerhusky Guy !!2YW0PJZXbhy
>>211921

Anyway, those last two pics I posted, you can see his undercoat is mostly all that's left. His topcoat is sparse and only in a few spots. Coat is also dry and bleached. The first two posts I made are his coat now. you can see the difference. That's whatHQ food and raw diet does.

I think I'm probably just too worried.

I think the dog will still be strong and fast... it shouldn't matter if I get it screened for all diseases, right?

If it's healthy I'm not really worried about lineage. I won't be trying to breed, at least not for years while I learn more about the breed and find two breed quality dogs I love.
>> Niggerhusky Guy !!2YW0PJZXbhy
>>211930

Find a mentor before you decide to breed. You can find one at dog shows and such. They sometimes will share their wisdom.

The dog will "probably" be healthy. The long-term effects on his health is nearly impossible to tell. If you got a ethical purebred, he's significantly more likely to be healthy in the short and long term.

But dogs are not that fragile. Fed properly, exercised properly, vaccinated, loved dogs will generally be healthy regardless of origins. Ethical purebreds just give you a better guarantee for it, but it's not set in stone either.

Unfortunately I am very worried by nature so I won't be happy until I test it at an independent breeder and get a clean bill of health.

Fuck I'm fucked.

Dogs can eat other things besides meat, but they are still primarily carnivorous.
