>>261783 Smell? You don't like cat pee and poo smells, huh? Well personally, I hate dog-shit-smell ten times worse, and even more than that, I detest the smell of a wet dog. In ANY situation, though, smell can be avoided, reduced, and cleaned away. If you say it can't, you're either not using the right product (litter, cleaner, deodorizer) or you're not washing the right area.
Cats aren't useless. My cat plays games with me, keeps my lap warm, sleeps next to me, helps me think, inspires me, and lowers blood pressure by helping me relax. Your dog can do all of those things, plus he apparently likes hiking or running with you, and that's great! But cats not usually being up for a run around the block does not mean they are useless.
The only thing that's arguable in your post is a cat's ability to defend. True, it very likely will hide in a closet or under a bed if there is a burglar, but cats have been known to wake owners during fires, earthquakes, gas leaks, burglary, when children or other animals are in distress . . . There is even a story of a cat who 'called 911', when the elderly owner could not do so. He'd tried to train the cat to hit a speed-dial button, unsure if it ever stuck with the cat's brain ... but apparently it did.
Cats, and dogs, are not useless. There are many reasons why they are domesticated animals, and pets to boot.
The thing that many of the "cats are useless/terrible"-opinionated people seem to be missing is that the OWNER must be willing to socialize, train, and be patient with a cat. If you raise a cat from kittenhood and there are no major third-party problems or disasters such as a car accident, there should be NO reason for a cat to have behavioral troubles. In other words, it's not the cat's fault.
