Hi /an/
I currently have 2 goldfish in my aquarium (only around 5cm long, 7 including tail) and I was thinking of maybe adding one or two triops in it. Will these little bastards (the triops) attack my goldfish? I heard they can be pretty mean.

What is a triop?

Prehistoric crustacean that's been relatively unchanged in design for millions of years. Several of the eggs found can be thousands of years old and still be successfully hatched when put into water.

Could you breed these things? Or do they just die in 2 days?
>> Anonymous
you can buy eggs and grow them, and then the adults will lay eggs too.they are short lived ,living in rain filled ditches eating plant matter.they are called fairy shrimps in US or billabong bugs in AUS.

I require more information on these creatures. Why the hell are they so gigantic? And where can I get them? My triops were a couple inches at most.

Thanks, wish me luck. Let's hope that my fish won't eat the Triops. Or even worse, the Triops eat my fish!

The plan is to raise them in a 0,5l bottle and after a week (they'll be big then) put them in the aquarium. I'll make a thread on here where i'll post every day (let's hope it doesn't 404)

Remember, Triops are rather nocturnal. Excessive light will stress them out, and kinda make shorter work of em for the tougher siblings...

OP Here - I turn the light of my aquarium of at night, since it's in my bedroom. And some days I'll forget to turn it on :) So there is no problem I guess.

I has an idea.

What if you kept them cooler than normal and fed them less? It could slow down their metabolism and effectively make them live longer.

Someone do this and get back to us on your findings.

It ain't that easy. You would need to get the temperature as low as possible, but not let them die. Same with the food. But I guess if you feed them right enough and keep the temperature right, you could keep them some weeks more.

I decided I'll post everything here. (This will also be posted on /an/)

Some comments I should throw in here...

1) Triops can asexually reproduce.
2) Male Triops are very rare (I believe 1 in a thousand, most likely more).
3) If you don't feed a Triops (How people are mentioning almost starving them), they will start eating each other. All Triops do is eat. That's it.

OP, Be sure to take pictures of them!

If I had more time this summer, I was planning on doing a scientific study on them. Measuring their length each day, recording what they ate, etc. Also setting up a webcam to record their behaviors, but I ship off for college soon. No time now.

Oh man i love these creatures. But then i read they should be kept at temperatures between 22° to 31°C. And that they will not survive below 15°C. ;_;

Is there any relative of them that can survive and breed in water colder than 15°C?

(pic is another cool water creature, sorry no idea what it's called)

I scored a male back when I had these. It was one of the few to make it to adulthood, too bad the other adult females didn't give a shit about him and ate him, then they laid eggs. I lol'd.

- Op here-
OK, I just received a mail that it has been sent. I think I'll have them in 2 days.
