Where do you live? That would be a huge asset to figuring out what it could be.

I seriously doubt it is a gerbil. I have raised countless gerbils, and at that size the proportions are all wrong. The tail isn't furry enough, the ears are too far down on the head, the shape of the head is wrong, etc.

I'm going with the Dormouse theory. For those of you that don't know, a Dormouse is nothing like a regular mouse. And, if OP lives in the right area, then it is also a very likely possibility.
