Hey /an/

I'm currently working on building a cabinet as shown in the picture.

What do my fellow rat owners think of this habitat of awesomeness?

Looks great but.. eugh rats
>> Anonymous
no, they have a brain size of less than 1cm^3

Cooooooool

I'm not a rat owner, but that is a pretty sweet set up.
>> Anonymous
Pretty intense for a pet that doesn't live past 3 years.

A healty, well taken care of rat can live up to 7 years.
>> Anonymous
so when can you have one made for my rat...lol
>> Anonymous
>>314931
No, because even healthy, well cared for rats tend to die early from tumors or the unstoppable onset of a respiratory infection due to Mycoplasma pulmonis, which nearly all rats have.

my rat last night decided to rip apart his cage last night. i gt up in the middle of the night and he had token all his bedding out of the shoe box knocked down his hamick and unsnapped his ladder from the shelf....
>> Anonymous
That seems like it would be really hard to clean when they start to pee on everything.

No way the longest I've heard of them living is close to 4 years. The average seems to be 2-3 yrs though.

That's a really cool set up though this is what mine are living in.

Where'd you get that cage? It's cute.

Our petsmart doesn't sell shit for rat cages.

>eugh rats
lol this is obviously the first time you've heard of pet rats.

>no, they have a brain size of less than 1cm^3
Larger animals need larger brains because more area is needed to process all their nerve endings. For that reason, brain size alone doesn't entail anything about intelligence. Also, volume is a bad measurement of brain power because smaller brains can undergo more folding and have more surface area. Rats are one of the most intelligent mammals; we know this from tests.

Just gotta wait for my next paycheck then I can buy all the hammocks and ladders and shit.

Don't spend too much money on hammocks they just eat it up and tear it to pieces really fast. I just ended up buy a big bag of painters rags at home depot and hung those in the cage as hammocks.

Their short lives are all the more reason to make each day count.

Not the first time I'VE heard of pet rats, and I still think it's eww.

After you've watched one of them die from their entire body breaking out in exploding cancerous cysts you kind of lose your taste for them as pets.

Yeah I'm going through that with one of mine right now. She has a huge tumor on her butt that the vet said she can't operate on because of it's location. It's really sad because it's exanding so rapidly and she is losing hair in the area. I'm afraid her skin is just going to split open or something.... I think I'm going to go for sugar gliders after she dies.

Get your female rats spayed! It reduces the chance of tumors by 90%!

I think you should make each room a little bigger than the one in the picture.

>> Anonymous
>>315298
maybe he wants a rat toilet

I wonder if the rat even uses the hammocks

looks like its just for show tbh
>> Anonymous
>>315300
What kind of rat wouldn't use a hammock? They love hammocks.
>> Anonymous
>>315179
It will. Kill it quickly and painlessly as you can, don't let it tear its own insides apart.

Op, that cabinet is cool and all, but it looks hard to clean.

Just get a Ferret Nation cage, plenty of space and easy as hell to clean. Get flannel floor covers and a few hammocks and etc. Cleaning's easy if it's just a matter of tossing the bedding into the washing machine and sponging down the trays.

>>314926
yeah but rats are cheap, buy a new one
>> Moo !XBOXgikTFw
Look at all these goddamn hammocks, that must me one lazy rat!

All the towels on the floor are actually velcro or whatever, you just rip them off, throw them in the washer, and put a new set of towels in daily, Then a weekly through cleaning with a disinfectant.

I have 6 rats; So it's worth it.
