Hey /an/. I want to get a flemish giant. I've never had a rabbit before. So can you tell me what the requirements are for them, how to care, how much it costs on average per month for their food and other things? Thanks.

At that size they are like dogs. Rather stupid ones.

these rabbits are bred for food not to be pets.

in other words. just eat it.

First and foremost: rabbit.org

I had a flemish giant so speaking from experience..
They need a lot of room. A lot. They're huge. I think the minimum is like a 6x6 ft cage. Even then, they still need time outside of the cage in a rabbit-safe backyard, pen, room, etc.

Why so much room? They love to leap straight up into the air, twist around, flip out, be crazy. I used to let mine run through my tiny apartment (we kept him in the kitchen with a baby gate across the doorway). He would go as fast as he possibly could, kick out his back end around the doorway into the bedroom, and jump onto the bed.

Rabbits definitely have personalities. They can be extremely affectionate. Mine would stretch out on the floor next to my hand, expecting to be pet. He'd get mad if I didn't, biting at the carpet or my pant leg, boxing my hands, etc. He never did like to be held. I hear larger rabbits are more mellow, and I'd believe it.

But vet visits are important and expensive since they're basically classified as exotic. You'd want your rabbit spayed or neutered to ease that crazy reproduction drive. They can get pretty stressed out otherwise.

Staple pellets are pretty cheap, especially at farm supply stores. But they need a lot of supplements, fresh veggies, and unlimited access to some kind of hay (I fed mine timothy hay). I'm not sure of exact costs, though. You can get pretty cheap bundles of greens at the grocery store, usually like 89 cents a bunch. I fed mine cilantro, parsley, collard greens, kale, stuff like that.

Luckily they're easy to litter train and their poop is pretty small anyway. I had to pick up the occasional poop off the floor but I don't think he ever peed anywhere but his litter pan. Of course, he was so big, sometimes he'd scoot his butt off the side and get the floor.

Take all this information as you will, I mean, if you're willing to put in the time and effort and money to set up an appropriate living space for a flemish giant, then by all means. I loved mine, but I don't think I would have gotten him if I'd known exactly what I was getting into. I probably would have gone with a dwarf instead, even though I hear they're a little more high strung. Dwarves also live longer, supposedly.

So.. yeah.

I've seen videos of these on youtube after first viewing this thread and the vast majority of them are full of "my rabbit died, wahh, etc." followed by footage of their rabbit while it was still alive. Which brings up the question, how long do these things live anyway?

I've heard giants only live like... three to five years. Larger rabbits, shorter lifespans. Plus, there's the fact that they *are* prey animals and sometimes easily spooked, they have weak necks, delicate digestive systems.. Also, most vets are complete idiots when it comes to rabbits. I had two vets tell me my rabbit needed to be put down when he developed gastrointestinal stasis. I got him to a vet who knew what she was doing and he recovered very quickly.

If you get one, and it dies, you MUST purchase a black rabbit and force it to eat the other rabbits corpse.

Then you must sing the following song:

Is it a kind of dream
Floating out on the tide,
Following the river of death down-stream
Oh is it a dream?

There's a fog along the horizon
A strange glow in the sky
And nobody seems to know where you go
And what does it mean
Oh oh is it a dream?

Bright eyes burning like fire,
Bright eyes how can you close and fail
How can the light that burned so brightly
Suddenly burn so pale? Bright eyes.

Is it a kind of shadow
Reaching into the night
Wandering over the hills unseen
Or is it a dream?

There's a high wind in the trees
A cold sound in the air
And nobody ever knows when you go
And where do you start
Oh oh into the dark.

Bright eyes burning like fire,
Bright eyes how can you close and fail
How can the light that burned so brightly
Suddenly burn so pale? Bright eyes.

Bright eyes,
Bright eyes.

I've seen some breeders recommend as little as a 4x4 foot cage for breeding flemish giants, but that they should be kept in a cage with a solid floor, or if in a wire bottem one they need access to an area that is solid so they can be comfortable. Pet rabbits should be let out in a safe area every day for an hour or two at least(2-3 is recommended).
