evolutionary theory as it relates to living organisms, are you a believer?
>> Anonymous
yes
>> Anonymous
I think you have to have some extreme cognitive dissonance / ideological mental blocks not to believe it.
>> Anonymous
Evolution is the absolute most logical and apparent reasoning
>> Anonymous
Yes, but not according to Darwinian theory. i.e. random traits that establish themselves through competitiveness. Rather, I believe that genetic changes are directly caused by a change in the environment: somewhat akin to Lamarckian theory. I see the cause in cycles, the most pronounced being the 65 (+/- 2) million year cycle of extinction/speciation in the geologic and fossil record...WHICH we are late for. But that's just me, and I'm the kind of person who also believes in the akasha, consciousness fields, quantum theory, free energy, and the like. Take what I say with a grain of salt.

Competitiveness and environmental change can and do work together in evolution

I believe in intelligent design through the tool of evolution.

If I were an omnipotent being, I'd take my fucking time creating a complex organism.

Exactly, these are not mutually exclusive concepts and whilst one at some point may have a greater influence than another, this does not reflect on the equal importance of both in evolutionary theory.

Evolution and Natural Selection exists, Humans an interact with the selection, there is no "God" that magically produces a certain species out of thin air onto this earth, and if "Playing God" to generate selective species weren't possible then the selection and breeding attempt would simply fail.

The Labradoodle.

Of course I believe it. It's accepted almost universally amongst educated people because it is supported by an overwhelming weight of evidence, and the various contrary positions such as creation by supernatural entities or intelligent design are not supported by anything.

Rebuttal: I do not believe in the theory of gravity, yet I am still held to earth.

Evolution is not a belief system.
>> Anonymous
No, I am not a believer. I am an agnostic.

Evolution, on the other hand, requires no belief. Simply knowledge and understanding. I understand the logic behind evolution and know that it works in practice. Evolution is one of the best established facts in science.

Imagine if we were to finally discover the true origins of all existence upon this planet....

and that would be...
an alien being landed on our planet during its intergalactic mission for a quick stop, took a massive alien shit into the waters and life thus sprung forth.

Which would be way less awesome than creating a beautiful, elegant, self-sustaining system like evolution by natural selection.

I don't think the word "believer" applies to atheist either. Atheist isn't a belief, of anything that has to do with faith; it's a conclusion.

Actually the dumbass makes a point, why would a perfect god not immediately create perfection if it is capable? To restate the Epicurean Paradox: If said god is incapable of creating perfection immediately either by lack of power or simply lack of definition for "perfect", the being itself cannot be considered perfect or infinite. If it is capable of creating perfection and hasn't, it is malevolent.

In before "god works in mysterious ways" and "unmoved mover".

God does not want his equal, he wants something refreshing new to entertain him.

>>Er.... you really don't know much, do you? Lamarckian theory isn't popular for a good good reason...
You're no encyclopedia yourself, given that you didn't notice that what he proceeded to describe doesn't much to do at all with Lamarckian evolution.

Oh, and Lamarckian evolution has been observed to a limited extent. Long story short, fruit flies are exposed to heat shock in the larval stage, which induces a cross pattern in the veins of their wings. By the dozenth generation of this, you started seeing that pattern without the heat shock effect. Hence, something a parent fly acquired during their lifetime was passed on to its young.

Passing immunities you obtained in your life on through blood-sharing with a child you're pregnant with could also be considered Lamarckian adaption.

There is no such thing as a scientific FACT set in stone. Our knowledge is always improving. Theories (and, if they're popular enough and heavily, heavily documented, they are called 'laws') are pretty much all we have. Gravity is a theory. Newtonian physics is a theory--and quantum physics pretty much makes Newtonian physics look either backwards or very exclusive. Science is fucking weird, but it's always searching for the truth via perfectly reproduced observations of studies, tests, and phenomena.

Science > faith, which requires nothing other than conviction in general.

Actually there are certain facts that theories are built upon. For instance, we know that gravity and evolution are facts, because we can observe them. However, the theory of gravity or theory of evolution are attempts to explain how these things (gravity and evolution) happen. In some cases also why they happpen, and what happens as a result of them happening. While it's much easier to observe gravitation than evolution (just drop something off the table) the theory of gravity is much more shaky and based on much more unknown factors than the robust and well-tested theory of evolution.

So, even if you doubt that gravitons exist, or are unsure of how gravity behaves at supragalactic distances, you can rest assured that evolution does happen pretty much the way scientists think it does.

I'm not the alien-monkey hybrid poster, but I have found some information that could help to explain how the hybridization could occur. Dr. Peter Gariaev and Vladimir Poponin have done research into and experimentation with DNA and non-burning lasers which has had some interesting results. Apparently light interacts with the DNA molecule in such a way that it will take its shape, heal damaged chromosomes through varying frequencies, and also has the ability to metamorphosize a frog embryo into a salamander embryo. I guess the term for the new field is "wave-genetics." In effect, the DNA molecule could be considered some kind of, "quantum-mechanical bio-wave computer." Hell, if it's actually possible to do this shit, one could program specific sequences into a computer to function a laser in order to cause genetic changes. Trippy shit, huh? Then again, he's a Ruskie, and you can't trust commies. Here's some links:

No, I don't mean when the new species is so similar that the only difference is that it has a different mating behavior, nor do I mean hybridization. I mean a completely new species.

Hey, douchenozzle, evolution takes thousands of years for most things. Just because it's an observable fact doesn't mean it's always fast enough to be observed in one person's lifetime. If you really want to see evolution in action, read up on diseases. They evolve so fast in response to medicines that we have trouble keeping up. Same thing with crop insects and pesticides.

What you're asking for here is "speciation," which is different from evolution. The scientific definition of evolution is a change in the allele frequencies in a population over time, whether it fits your personal idea of what you think evolution should be or not. Evolution can result in speciation, but it doesn't have to.
>> Anonymous
>>181327
Take your time. It took about 6 million years for humans to evolve from something looking like a bipedal chimp. But maybe you'll get lucky and you get to see similiar change in some species in little under a million years!
