Pitbulls, on the whole, are owned by shitty people. Almost everyone I know who owns one is a lazy motherfucker with little experience with other dogs. They refuse to socialize them from the time they are little, take them for maybe one or two walks, and then go, "GOSH HE'S SO STRONG, SO HIGH ENERGY" when the dog pulls 'em down the street.
They're far stronger than your average dumbass golden retriever and so are harder to train. My ex's needed a choke chain, a gentle leader, and two people to teach him to heel. He wasn't particularly misbehaved or high-energy, he just had NEVER really felt what was going on on the other end of the leash.
Furthermore, I'm far less afraid of a badly behaved pitbull than a badly behaved herding or companion dog. My mom, who is really as bad a dog owner as I've ever seen, has owned a cattle dog, a treeing walker coonhound, and a german shepherd. All of these dogs have gotten into (one-on-one)fights with pitbulls. Each time, her dogs have ripped half the face off of the pitbull they were fighting with, while the pitbull, killing machine that was, left a row of deep toothmarks in his neck and nothing more. Lockjaw is not scary.
