Pool's closed due to wasps. Anonymous
I need halp, /an/.

I recently moved into a house with a pool. I would like to swim sometime in the near future, except these paper wasps keep coming to take a drink and generally scaring the shit out of me.

I've tried drowning them with a net, but they don't die. I have no idea where their nest is, or how to find it. I've noticed them continually flying up on the roof by the chimney, so I sprayed the shit out of it with wasp spray. None flew out, so I guess that's not where their nest is.

Any have any suggestions/protips on how to deal with this problem?

Are paper wasps attracted to those wasp traps? Just throwing out an idea

Make a fire in like a barbecue.Throw a shitload of leaves in it.Due this under any nearby trees, and if wasps fly out, spray the fuck out of that goddamn tree. There probably won't be birdnests or anything.

Behind my house are miles of trees. I'll try it with the nearby trees, though.

I think so. Back in the day my family had a pond in the back yard (in addition to a vibrant garden some large trees) and we used a wasp trap to keep them manageable.

The wasp trap sounds like the way to go.

In Texas anyway:

Paper wasps are less aggressive than yellowjackets. (Real yellowjackets that is...many people call anything remotely wasplike a "yellowjacket" or "bee") But, they are definatley agressive if you get near their nest.

Mud daubers, on the other hand, are non-aggressive. You have to try to get them to sting.

Anyway, there are two kinds of wasp traps. The pheremone based ones are the most effective, but they tend to work only on actual yellowjackets. If you have paper wasps, they won't do much good. The "food scent" type will work on paper wasps, but so-so. Keep in mind that the traps will attract the wasps, so put the traps near the area you want to keep wasp-free, but not right there in the middle of it.

This might sound weird but this is what everyone did in the midwest(for bees anyway)

drink a mountain dew bottle down to about an inch of the last bit of soda...cut a small square near the top...big enough so they can get in but small enough so they can't get out.
(you can leave it somewhere away from where people will be or you can string it up somewhere.)

they will be attracted to the sweetness and go into the bottle, get covered in sticky mountain dew, and die in there.

most people say "lol, that will attract bee's"
yes, but they never bother us when there is sugary goodness right in front of them...one of the ladies was allergic to bee's ...she never got stung and was never scared of getting stung.

will it work for other insects?...idk
:\

(doesn't need to be diet mountain dew thats the best pic I could find)

Better:

Drink to inch of bottom.Throw cap away.Get scizzors and place the top half (cap open) upside down in the bottom half, they'll crawly through the opening but won't be able to fly out. Also they'll probably drown in the dew, too.
