I was vegan for over a year, and got very very sick. When you're a vegan, your entire life is centred around eating. You have to be sooo careful about everything you put into your mouth, making sure that it doesn't contain any animal products but also that it has enough nutrition to keep you going.
You can't eat out at many places, and anything the restaurant does offer is usually a plain ol' salad. Even french fries or onion rings, things like that, are out of the question because they use the same deep fryer to cook meat products as well.
I got bored with eating the same stuff day in, day out, and that's when I got sick. I couldn't stand another day shoveling down a dozen grape-sized vitamins. Even the smell of soy makes me physically ill now because it was in everything I ate.
There are lots of people that live as vegans, and it's great that they can do it healthily, but tell your brother to take all the negatives (because, believe me, there are more of them than positives!) into considereation before taking the plunge.
Also, you might want to mention that most alcoholic beverages are forbidden, especially beers and wine, because of a filtration process they use that contains animal fats.
