Some kind of cobweb weaver, I don't think this is a widown, but look on its underside to find out for sure. If it has a red hourglass or any red markings underneath it, it's a black widow. Did you find it underneath something, or hiding in a hole with a big web around it? Depending on how it acts, it could be a common house spider.
I'll need more information to ID it properly, like size and where this picture was taken.

This is correct. You should put one of those balls in your sock drawer, the smell is actually there to chase away large moths that could damage the spider's web. They're like natural mothballs.
