Hey there /an/, i just got an ant farm yesterday and its pretty sweet, but im thinking that they should be tunneling by now but they're all chilling on the top of the gel and looking around. I fed them small pieces of bread which the smarter ones noticed was food but probably fifty percent of them are still just walking around. Any advice? Will it just take them a bit longer or are my ants broken?

Try waiting a little longer. It might just take them a bit to get used to their surroundings.

They're pretty savage little buggers, one's eating the severed head of another.

OP here: no, no queen just about ten workers...and they'll die in about three months (not enough time to eat up all the gel) you can get it at Wal Mart, thats where i got mine

Try giving them an itty bitty amount of sugar.. like 10 crystals or something^^

That'll get them going :P

Sure, you can buy ants in a wall mart, just like you can buy butterflies and wasps, it's pretty common.

If you want to keep the ants longer then a week take out the gel IMMEDIATELY and fill it with sand.

It always surprises me how little kids know about ants.
Let me simplify this for our underage fellow anon.
No queen means no eggs, no eggs means no larvae or pupae which means no reason for the workers to live.
They will just run around like crazy and tomorrow they'll sit in a corner doing nothing and then they'll eventually die.

Oh yeah, ants don't eat bread and judging by the fact that they attack each other you probably just took some random ants out of your garden not knowing ants have a different smell.
