Hey /an/, I might get a (Syrian) hamster sometime soon.

I've read up on every piece of hamster info the internet has to offer, but I want to know what I should expect from a hamster. (Besides their obvious skill at tennis.)

A tiny little rodent that will walk all over you and eat from your hand. There fairly docile cute to watch fuzzy to play with. Tho i never had a russian dwarf i always got teddybear hamsters.

I've been breeding panda hamsters.
My male is as docile as a well beaten hooker, but the female still likes to bite.
They'll do some adorable things. Get a few hundred and you got yourself a nice coat.

First, that pic is of a dwarf and not a syrian, I'm sure you knew that already.

Are you going to be getting it directly from a breeder or a pet store? Usually the hamsters from pet stores don't get handled as much as their direct-from-the-breeder counterparts. Thusly, you are probably going to have to spend a few weeks gaining your little hammie's trust by repeated holdings, treat givings, and gentle talks. Seriously.

Syrian hamsters tend to have smellier cages than Russian dwarves, but they also tend to be nicer. Robo and winter white dwarves are pretty mellow and don't usually nip, but the Robos are too hyper for you to hold them.

If you get it from a pet store, there's a good chance that it will have been weaned too soon. If so, expect it to chew even more than usual and to generally be a little fuzzy pain in the ass. Still cute, just more needy.
