dear /an/

I have a rescue American Pit Bull Terrier. When I got her, she already had her ears and tail docked, and I was wondering if there is any company that you've heard of that makes prosthetic ears and tail for her so people won't be afraid of her, or at least not run in terror when they see her.

In the past 2 days I've had people...

1) Literally SCREAM when they saw her (They did the whole HHNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGRR with her chest.)
2) Sprint away when they saw her.

I feel like I'm walking fucking frankenstien sometimes.

Pic related, it's my APBT Chaos
>> Anonymous
You'll just have to deal with it. People are stupid and they've heard enough stories that you might as well be walking death on a leash. I've heard of people reacting that way to Boxers, Bulldogs, even Shar-peis because a lot of people don't even really know what a Pit Bull looks like.

Put a pink bow on her head or something. Hang a sign on her that says, "I look scary, but I'm a nice dog".

Naming her Chaos probably isn't going to help your case, though.
>> Anonymous
OP here, I know Chaos isn't the best name for here, but she was 3 when I got here, and to change a name now would be just tough.

I actually just went out and did the bow thing. I look gay, but who cares, lol
>> Anonymous
It's sad, but it's a reality. I love Pits, but people automatically assume it's some crazy, rabid dog...

The best thing you can do is put something cute one him, like these:

http://tinyurl.com/6xbg66

http://tinyurl.com/5bxofm

it might detract from his Pitty-ness. Hope that helps!
>> dumb d
That is the dumbest thing i have ever heard.do not let idiotic people keep you from enjoying a wonderful breed you should have considered the reactions u would get look how they are portrayed on tv
>> Anonymous
>>327863

Jesus Christ, do you know what fucking punctuation is?

And we know the reactions we'll get... but we have to find a way to lessen it, and re-educate people.
>> Anonymous
thats awful, especially when people fawn over cute dogs when they act like little assholes...pits are some of the sweetest dogs ive known
>> Anonymous
Yeah, people have no clue about what a Pit Bull actually looks like. My one boxer gets mistaken for one all the time, the other is belligerent towards anyone that isn't in the family but never gets mistaken for some reason.
>> Anonymous
I honestly hate when they cut the ears and tail!!
It gives me the creeps, to see chop ears.
>> Anonymous
awwwww she's adorable.
>> Anonymous
people in your neighborhood are all retarded. let them be retarded...at least no one will rob you.
>> Anonymous
I find it odd that people would instantly be afraid of your dog. Do they not know the difference between a happy friendly dog and a mean one? You should be able to tell just by their posture.
>> Anonymous
If someone runs from you two you may as well go with it and sprint after them.
>> Anonymous
>>327863

Yeah, a breed that is often bred to kill and fight; people are going to be scared of these dogs. period. Tell them its nice (if it is) so they dont get the wrong perception about this particular dog.

But as a rule pits are usually bad news (this comes from years of experience with dogs in back of utes... with a few bites)
>> Anonymous
Those poor ears.

Personally I think she looks like a real sweet ol' sop, but I'd ask if she was friendly before I approached to be certain. (shame)
But yeah, like other people have said, there's not much you can do to change neighbourhood retards' preconceptions.. just keep walking her about, telling people who ask that she IS friendly, and eventually word will get round the neighbourhood that that Chaos isn't as bad as she looks. :)

Also, requesting pics of Chaos with the pink bow.

back of utes? What does that even mean? That you were fighting dogs? Of course they were "bad news" for you, cuntwaffle.

People are shit scared of every single dog larger than a Yorkshire, "fight breed" or not.
I own a Czech Wolfdog and they are like "OHMYGODAWOLFYOUREGOINGTOKILLUSALLRUNFORYOURLIVES!".

Just fuck them all to hell.

I had a pit. She was a sweetie. She'd bark at strangers but all you had to do was yell back and she'd run and hide behind something.

All the neighbors were scared to death of her.
>> Anonymous
I know its a conditioning thing and that when exercised and properly handled they can be fine pets but they are still fierce looking dogs. but op's looks like a big sweetie i want to hug him/her
>> Anonymous
I second the request for pink bow pictures. Chaos is a cutie.

Also, kudos OP for taking in a dog that many people would want nothing to do with.
>> Anonymous
Tell them she's a puppy. Even if she's not.
I walk with a giant sheep (=Mermano) who is the sweetest dog in the world. He doesn't fight no dog, he licks little kids who walk past him and wags his tail to everyone. However, due to his huge size, most people are very afraid of him.
Then someone told me "Tell them he's just a pup and it'll all turn out fine".
And he was damn right.

Also, OP's dog lookd huggable and cute. Good job at being an awesome person.

Do remember that most pits and dogs like them were bred for bear baiting and things like that over the centuries. The breed is tricky, because violence pops up out of nowhere with them (they could be the sweetest dog in the world and one day just bite you). They've tried to breed em out of it, but don't forget that they're big enough to basically kill a child by themselves.

That said, just take her out at low times like at sunrise and sunset, as well as if she's in your backyard you always keep her on a leash. If she's noisy (barks alot or even at other people) you need to correct that immediately, because people do not like 50lb dogs barking at them. They also don't like them running at them for a hug.

Try to keep her controlled at all times. Sometimes people just don't like big dogs. You'll have to accommodate them because one false move and she can be put down for being violent.
>> Anonymous
>>328398

they were bred to attack animals (like all terriers, they have some degree of animal aggression), and were SPECIFICALLY bred not to attack humans. Dog fighters could stand OVER their dogs with no fear of being bit, because if a dog did bite his owner, he was useless, and was put down, and that trait wasn't passed on to the next gen of puppies. They did NOT breed human aggression into these dogs.
>> Anonymous
>>328404

>stand OVER their dogs WHILE THEY FOUGHT with no fear of being bit

oops, I missed that key phrase
>> Anonymous
Those people are fucking stupid. Be proud of your dog and ignore those who fear her for no reason. They'd probably have the same reaction no matter what you did. Look on the bright side, she'll be a good litmus test for judgmental assholes!
>> Anonymous
>>328404
But you forget that people usually don't train these dog's now to not be violent against people; they just kinda go "Oh it's a sweet dog, I'm sure if little suzy starts smacking it with a pillow it'll all be fine." Sometimes it isn't yours or the dog's fault things happen, but alot of people are trigger happy with euthanizing them.
>> Anonymous
>>328430

there is a difference in these two statements.

>the breed is tricky, because violence pops up out of nowhere with them

>Sometimes it isn't yours or the dog's fault things happen

It's either because it's a Pit, or it's not. Don't try to backtrack.
>> Anonymous
>>328435
I'm not backtracking at all. I had a girl try to suffocate my dog once and it bit her nose, and the mother screamed bloody murder because the dog had bitten her, even though it wasn't his fault (he was scared).
If it's a particularly big dog, it can do quite a bit of damage, and most people won't care if they caused the dog to bite.

>>328404
>because if a dog did bite his owner, he was useless, and was put down, and that trait wasn't passed on to the next gen of puppies.

You must be one of the stupidiest people in this thread. Do you fall down a lot?

"OMG GAIS I can't believe people are cautious about a breed specifically bred to tear other animals apart! They don't know what a cutie-pie she really is!!11"
>> Anonymous
People sure are dumb. I've had them freak out over my pug because they thought it was a pitbull.
>> Anonymous
>>328674
Another thing is just because it didn't bite it's owner, doesn't mean it doesn't have the capacity to.
>> Anonymous
>>328701
There's a Argentinian film about Argentinian fighting dogs in which the owner is bitten on the hand and all the other owners laugh and show their scars. None of these dogs were "trained" to bite humans either. All of these fighting dogs are bred for their ability to do serious damage and their aggression.
Only a braindead fuckwit would claim their particular fighting dog is harmless.
>> ROCKET JOE-LUMBERMOUTH !2vToiPG2ig
There's a pit bull named Deogie at the Animal Shelter I work at. She is absolutely Completely Fucking Bonkers. Batshit goddamn insane.

She's also incredibly sweet and an excellent companion, Someone adopt her and make her happy, please? ;_;

Pitbulls arn't mean dogs. I have 3 of my own and I've never had a problem with them. Its all in how you raise them. Any dog can be made aggressive, it's not just the pitbull. The truth is I will always own a pit just because I love how gentle they are. Don't let anyone tell you that it's in their blood to be agressive. Also, the next time you run into someone and they ask what kind of dog she is, tell them shes a boxer mix or an Ehglish bull dog. I bet you they wont be afraid of her.

I did that with all 3 of mine and no one thought twice about playing with them but, the second I told them they were pitbulls the people freaked out. It's because people associate the name with a vicious dog, when in reality it's just how they are raised. There are bad pitbulls but only cuz they were made that way.

As for the ears, none of mine have their ears docked, and i will admit they look alot cuter with them down but it's not a big deal.

Good luck with your beautiful baby and don't let people get to you, they are clearly mis-led about the Pitbull and are missing out on a great breed.
>> Anonymous
I have grown up with pitbulls for 16 years. I've owned 13 of them and i have 2 right now. I haven't saw any agressive behavior in any of them. They are just as gentle as any other dog can be.

I had 3 of my female pitbulls take care of litters of kittens before as if they were mothers. I'm absolutely in love with my dogs and I would never let anyone tell me that my dogs were aggressive in anyway. If they were, I wouldn't own them. It's just dumb people that don't know anything about the breed. All you hear about is the bad things pitbulls "can" do. No one talks about how good of dogs they are. I would deffinately pet your pitbull if I saw her.
>> Anonymous
I have had my fair share of pitbulls in my life. Some advice for you would be:

1. Don't ruff house with her to the point where she play growls at you.

2. Keep her under control when you're taking her for walks. Have her learn to walk next to you and not tug the leash.

I say this because, if someone was to see her growling at you, they are atomaticly going to think she's attacking you. And keeping her under control on walks wont scared the naive people as much.

I'm glad to see that you don't judge the breed by the stories you've heard. You're very lucky to know Chaos, she looks like she just needs a chance. She will not disappoint you.

Perfect example of the retard owners I was talking about earlier.

>Don't let anyone tell you that it's in their blood to be agressive.

Yes, don't ever listen to logic.

You clearly have no idea what is meant by culling any dog that shows ANY aggression to humans.

>>328706
They're fucking retarded Argentinians, what do you expect?
>> Anonymous
I treat 'em same as any dog.

People need to understand that the owner matters just as much as the dog. Is the owner a friendly down-the-street neighbor you've been cool with over the years? I'd pet the dog whether pitbull or chihuahua. Is the owner an unkempt, greasy looking guy you've never met that sends tingles down your spine the back way? Then fuck no don't touch it, even if it is a golden retriever.

you should always ask if it is okay to pet someone's dog or if they are friendly- especially if you have another dog. i am so sick of people just running up and petting or letting their dogs meet stranger's dogs without knowing said dog.

just gonna' bring a lotta heartache someday.

Just because you haven't experienced aggression from pitbulls doesn't mean they can't be aggressive. That's like saying you've never been mugged by a black guy so black guys obviously never mug anyone.

It's bred into them naturally, like how some dogs naturally can swim or herd animals. If you haven't had one of them freak out, good then. I'm happy for you. But there's a high instance of pitbulls being aggressive or turning aggressive for no reason, like attacking a kid for no reason out of the blue.
>> Anonymous
Only if you wanted to maybe you can try calling her Kay and see if she responds

Besides having her wear bows and shirts do you have a friend with a dog that wouldn't mind walking with you (especially a small breed) -- I think if people were to see her walking well with another dog they wouldn't see her as aggressive

And thank you for taking her in
>> Anonymous
Haha, what are you talking about?
>> Anonymous
>>329529

I disagree, any dog can learn how to attack, just like any dog can learn how to swim. Ok so pitbulls were breed to fight, doesn't mean every pitbull will someday attack someone.

And just because you've "been mugged by a black guy", doesn't mean "all black guys will mug you".

Some people are quick to judge when they haven't been properly educated.

>>327839
Even if you get prosthetic ears and tail, people will still be afraid of her.

I have an English Bull Terrier, sweetest, sappiest, nicest dog on the entire planet. Some people look at him like he'll rip their face off.

>Ok so pitbulls were breed to fight, doesn't mean every pitbull will someday attack someone.

No, it means pitbulls are highly LIKELY to be aggressive because that's what they are bred for. Just like when a pitbull does attack someone it is more likely to do serious if not fatal damage compared to a normal dog.

People are afraid of their own shadows. Your dog's cute.
