the junipers are amde of fail and noob, they are ground covers anyway and look bonsaish without doing anything but trimming them. They die because people keep them inside. So will your hardwood. There are not many trees that will live inside all the time, thus most bonsai are kept outside most of the ime and are only brought in periodically for display.
Anyway, Ideally you want a part of the tree much more than a leaf stem. A branch with a little character to it.This looks like some good info with pics http://www.knowledgeofbonsai.org/propagation/stem.php I would think playground sand should be fine. Ideally you should use root hormone so it'll root, you just need to keep it from molding.
