So you take him out when he begs *IN ADDITION TO taking him out 3 times*? That would be just fine, although you always need to watch for his body language because sometimes dogs are not always clear about needing to go out. If you are careful about monitoring his body language, you can get away with taking him out twice a day IN ADDITION TO any times that he asks you to. As dogs age, it gets harder for them to hold it in. If you only take him out twice a day and ignore his pleas to go outside, then that would be cruel as some dogs would rather suffer than "soil" the house. If he soils, don't punish him - just take him out 3 times a day, IN ADDITION TO any times that he asks.
