they called this "Tarantula sp." but i think that is outdated nomenclature. my guess would be Damon sp. though i really can't say for sure, and am not too up on iding them. i know they messed up on one of the tarantulas..so who knows.

Kick ass. I live only about 50 miles from St. Louis. Been to the zoo three times in my life. You a Missourian?

They had one of these at a zoo? Was is outside or actually being displayed in the bug house?
I ask because I have these all over my back yard in the fall. Are they exotic over there or something?
Their webs are fucking strong, too. I like to play with them after the spider leaves.

i am for now. just moved here temporarily.

they have them inside in an enclosure. from what i could see, there were only two females. don't know their full range, but i know they are all over florida. i used to find them all the time before i moved. they like to be near water, and on the edge of clearings in wooded areas. i guess because there are plenty of bugs flying around those places.

the other female then the enclosure. (a really bad picture)

What were they feeding the velvet ants? A plum? I had a velvet ant for about a year and fed it solely pineapple. I went to the STL zoo soon after they opened the insect part and they had the sickest looking velvet ant's I'd ever seen. I told them too feed them pineapple, but when I went back a few months later, they had different velvets that also looked sick and were still feeding them oranges :/ Hope they got their system down.

No hissing cockroaches? I have about 100 in a 10 gallon aquarium. Whenever I eat fruit I just give them the last little bit and that's about it.

i think they were feeding them grapes. they seemed to be doing alright, though there were a couple inverts that seemed to be under par in the health dept. for the most part the inverts looked to be taken care of just fine.

i had to leave earlier and haven't gotten to the hissers yet.
