I sort of feel like a dick. I was walking to catch the city bus this morning when this fat orange cat walked right in front on me and plopped on his back asking for some attention. He had a flea collar but no visible ID, so I scooped him up, crammed him in my room, put some found posters around the block real fast, and left him there while I took classes for the day.

I come back and my roommate sees him while I'm carrying him to the car to get microchip-checked at the local vet and is all "hey yeah that's the cat down the street that my dog always chases" and the vet gives me an address a state away and a phone number I leave voicemail on.

So basically there's a 99% chance this is just a neighborhood cat that I essentially abducted and crammed in a dark room all day long, and now I'm just waiting for a call back so the owner can bitch me out for stealing her cat off the streets.

The trade-off is I either ignore the cat and risk not saving a lost animal, or I take the cat in and risk pissing off his owner. Still, if he's an outdoor animal he should have a visible tag. Right? Right? I just want to rationalize some way where I can feel like I'm not some cuntflap of a catnabber.

No, you're pretty much an asshole catnapper. Imagine how freaked out that cat must have been. It had a fucking flea collar on! If you want a cat that bad, go the pound or an animal shelter and pick out one that needs a home. Yea he should have a tag or something, but it's really difficult with cats because they can easily get their collars caught on something and choke, and if you get a break-away collar, then you might be replacing collars and tags constantly.

Call the owner again. Tell them that you were trying to protect a cat you thought was lost and that you didn't purposely steal the cat. I wouldn't mention the flea collar to them, though, because then it'll be obvious you tried to steal someone's cat.

Cats should not be roaming outside, this is one of the reasons why.

Fuck everyone else, OP.
Serves the owner right for being a dumbass and not realizing the risk of letting a cat roam.

And a state away? Wtf. Since when to cats travel that far? Sounds like someone dumped him.

I assumed the 'a state away' was an exaggeration. He took the cat to a local vet who recognized the cat and gave him the appropriate name/address where the cat lived.

I agree with you, but there could be many reasons why this happened:

The people could have moved, yet forgotten to update their registered pet address in the microchip database. Friends could be looking after the cat. The cat could have travelled with the owners on vacation.

Also, the other state could be very nearby. Perhaps anon is very close to the border?

Doesn't sound like he was trying to steal it.

if the cat was roaming around a neighborhood near houses, then it shouldve been left alone.

if the cat was out roaming on a main street, then what you did was fine. thats not a safe place for a cat.

Well, first thing's first, OP.

I guess you should let the cat out of the bag.

This happened to me once. I found a dog that had gotten out, but the chip was registered in the state next door to mine. Turns out the guy whose dog it was had moved and not updated, and actually lived across the fields from me. Apparently this was like the third time the dog had escaped, but the first time someone had bothered to have the data pulled. He got it changed.

I have a bad habit of picking up dogs I see running loose and trying to return them to their owners. Some people get really annoyed at me. I wouldn't want MY dogs running around in front of cars, but people can be really fucking ungrateful for some reason.

As long as you actually do try to find the owner, you're okay.

I would have (and have) done the same thing as you, OP. Don't worry about what the owner thinks, it should be a wakeup call not to leave his cat where he could get hit by a car or eaten by a Korean.
