its nice, but unless you're going to put some java moss on that slate, move it out of the middle, it looks retarded.

also, good close up of my tank. sorry i didnt take any full-tank shots, my guys are too fast and always fuck up the pic cuz they become blurs if I do full-tank shots. So I tried capturing them+the tank instead.

how would u go about cleaning out a tank like that? do you ever? or do you just get algae eaters and snails+chemicals to do it?
>> Anonymous
"cleaning" how? Well I used a horrible choice of fish lol...exodon paradoxus are primarily carnivorous and therefore pretty messy fish, but with good enough filtration and enough plants and careful feeding, cleaning is no big deal. I take my gravel vac and lightly skim surface of foreground plants and squeeze in the spaces between background plants. But yes...the snails help, but again, so does careful planning w/ filtration and feeding. Of course, all the plants help a ton too.

Algae on glass isn't much of a problem since snails take care of a lot, whatever is left I can simply scrape off.

Do either of you have any special lighting requirements for the plants? And also, do the plants require you to use distilled water or something? because I havent been having much luck with indoor aquatic plants in my tank.

I use a $10 fluorescent overhead I got from walmart. The package claimed it was a grow light, so i figgured what the hell- try it.
I'm happy with my results. I made a crude hood for the fixture (with some sheet metal and reflective tape) And now, four months on, I've got good solid results with undemanding species of plant (anacharis and hornwort). I don't pretend this is a perfect setup, but it beats the hell out of what some ppl are paying for lighting.

FIY half the plants petsmart/co sell are actually terrarium/vivarium plants so they die within a few weeks of being completly submerged. You local fish store will kindly direct you to many plants that grow very well with the basic fluorescent light that comes with many tanks...anon above mentioned 2 good species, cryptocoryne wendtii is another amazing plant as well...also any anubis, though beware brazilian swords which will die submerged

me again.
There aren't any really special water concerns for plants aside from it being fairly clear and clean. Obviously anything in excess is going to harm plants, but as a general rule, if fish live in it fine, plants will, too.
Also try aponogeton. You can get them as little bulbs from PetsMart (Tetra brand Betta Bulbs) and they will grow under almost any aquarium light, especially well with fluorescent.

Plant tanks take a completely different approach form FO tanks. Normal aquarium bulbs are rarely sufficient, and my experience with the dept store 'plant bulbs' was really disappointing. Do yourself a favor and invest in at least 3-5 watts/gal with nutrigrow bulbs. I also have started injecting CO2 with has helped a TON but will be a waste of time w/o enough light.

You need a better filter and light
