Did pirates really carry around parrots or any other animals on themselves?
There is reason to believe that some pirates may have owned parrots. Parrots were often traded and brought overseas to rich and influential Europeans. Well-off pirates often liked to emulate the rich and the noble, so at least the captains may have had pet parrots. Pirates may have also taken parrots with the rest of the plundered loot, sold them and even used them as bribes for city officials. Similarly they may have New World monkeys. It's much more likely that pirates had cats than any other pets, though. When you have a cat roaming about, you might want to make sure your parrot is safely in the cage, rather than on your shoulder.
Yarrr!

Yeah, propbably. And whatever animals they felt like boating around with them. Trading and pirating brought bugdies, tiels, all sorts of large birds, guinea pigs, back to Eroupe. In return, we gave the natives syphilis and small pox.
Cats were commonly kept for the obvious reason of killing rats, but they usually weren't pets. No rats = dead cats. One custom for both government and anti-government naval crews was bringing a live rabbit or hare on board for good luck. When it started to starve, it was time for bunny stew!
>>211276True enough, but sailors were also a superstitious lot, and it was often believed that a happy ship's cat meant good luck. Cats were also believed to be able to forecasts storms (or even cause storms if they were treated badly). Also, it should be noted that there are clear similarities between pirates and Anonymous, who is also known to be inexplicably fond of cats despite his sociopathic tendencies.
If you were a well-to-do pirate captain, what pet(s) would you keep on your ship?>>211503Sociopathic is such a strong word, I prefer morally ambiguous.
Well, my cat can certainly predict when it's about to storm. She is afraid of bad weather for some reason, and goes and sits in a loaf in the middle of a doorway.I've had one that would ride on my shoulder before. It's moar likely than you think
