Look at this baby Possum I found in my back yard. I saw it's mother (I think) all sploded in the middle of the street. I have seen 2 or 3 babies running around my yard, I'm pretty sure they're gonna die, but I dunno what to do. When I throw them back into the canyon they just come back into my yard. My cat already ate/eviscerated/mamed one of them. What do you guys think I should do with them. They are actually young enough for me to catch and try to tame..........

Ask these people about wildlife rehabilitators in your area. Don't try to be an hero for the 'possum.

We've had the same thing happen before. Try someone who does wildlife control nearby. I know they're cute and they don't bite and such while they're little, but it would be hard to raise them. (Plus they grow up to be ugly and mean... =P)

When I get close the little fuckers hiss at me, I just grab 'em by the tail and gently drop them over my fence into the canyon.

You should gently drop the little arses into your cat's line of sight. Cats are predators, they exist for a reason. Maim! Kill! Burn! Skulls for the skull throne!

catch the little bastard and put him in a box or something and call animal control or go to>>83647

i've talked with people who own possums before and said that they were awesome as pets, but you can't keep them in one room. they need full range of the house and shouldn't be taken outside(or they will want to be free).
but remember that an opossum is a wild animal and adults can be very nasty.

Harpoon it and stake it to the ground, then run your car over it and throw it in the road.

Depending on where you find them, if you try to take them to some kind of animal control, they'll get destroyed because they're (falsely:( ) considered nuisance animals.

If you have the time for them, do some research and care for them yourself. They're very wonderful pets.

When you go and grab them though, do it slowly if you can. They don't see well and you might scare them.

They're immune to rabies too, if you were concerned.

Here's a tip that I'm sure you already knew: Do not, under any circumstances, do anything threatening to a possum. They'll go catatonic and shit themselves. Not pretty.
>> Anonymous
A possum is a mean, ugly animal. Do not attempt to keep one as a pet.
Call animal control, or a wildlife rescue society.

Why is it that people only want to keep something as a pet if it is pretty or cute? If it is nice it shouldint matter.

I am 23, I have had pet opossums since I was 9. I will say this. If they feel threatened:

1) They bare their teeth (but they don't bite)
2) They go catatonic for a while, but rarely shit themselves.

They are affectionate, playful, and friendly once they are acclamated to humans. I have 3 of them, my wife loves them and my kids love them. They sleep in my oldest son's room. When he's sick, they snuggle real close to him and keep him warm.

To be honest, I've never had a nicer pet and I'm sure I'll continue to have them till I die. So no, they're not pests they're awesome pets if you get them when they're young. Just love them, that's all they want.

Fuck all you other people.

I'd like to see that pic also. You can edit out the face of your son if you're worried about privacy.

I've got a question for you. I live in Texas, as we have possums all over the place. I have been around them enough to know their common behaviors. I can understand how they could be decent pets...except for one thing. The SMELL. Every time I have encoutered a possum--live that is (not talking roadkill here), they are always accompanied by a particularly vile smell. Do pet possums smell like this too..or is it a function of their food in the wild?

Interesting tidbit: Possums have remarkably large jaws and teeth for their body size.

Yesterday I was walking to the bus stop and I saw a dead ring-tail possum. I poked with a stick. It was fairly rigid.

Yeah, sorry about how long this has taken to reply. In the wild, I am told my a vet friend of mine, possums smell bad because they're not particularily clean. I find that ours, though, smell just fine when bathed regularly. They do enjoy baths. We use a cat shampoo and tepid water - they do not like hot water at ALL. Bathe them in the bath tub, not in sinks, because they do like to swim and Leila, our daughter, really likes playing with them in the bath.

"they are not particularly clean" is no joke. I have seen a possum crawl out of the rear-end of a long-dead decomposing cow.

Pet opossums do not smell any more than a dog, and will let you bath them.

If the babies are bigger than your hand, nose to base of tail, they can be taken to a safer wooded place and released. If they are smaller you may want to keep them for a while, and feed them dry cat food and people food a little for treats. They can peel a grape while chewing it.

They can make wonderful pets, but are part of the wild breeding population and should be released.

If you really want one as a pet contact an opossum rescue place and they can give you one that is not releasable, but it may have some kind of former injury. They only live for two or three years though...I prefer a longer lived pet.

they would just 'give' you one?
I'm sure permits and what not would be involved, and might depend on where you live, what kind of pets you own, etc.

damn. i'd love an opossum. but i heard they aren't good with small animals like rats and birds, and that they need full range of the house and i rather not have it kill any of them.;

In some places its illegal, as well.

You kind of have to make your house safe. They'll climb into toilet bowls and pull the lids down on themselves trying to get out and drown, the little retards.
