guinea pigs Anonymous
Does /an/ have any information on Guinea pigs? Ive looked on the internet and all, but whenever i ask /an/ about something I usually learn something i didn't. Im getting one on Wednesday for my birthday. Or should i get a hamster? I have experience with hamsters because when my sister was smaller i bought her a hamster and took care of it with her

Hamsters are shit really, guinea pigs are a lot more fun and more handlable. If you want true interactivity, get a rat.

cute idea for a cage, and cheap!

Guinea pigs are kind of obnoxious, though. Loud, squawling poop machines that may or may not try to eat your finger if you touch 'em.

Now fancy rats.. if you can get yourself over the nudey tails, they're a wonderful small fuzzy pet. They're really intelligent, quite companionable and just generally a lot of fun. You can train them with a little patience, too. I had one who rode around the house on my head and stayed there nicely.

Rats end up being better friends, methinks.

the people at guineapigcages.com are assholes. I posted something about help, at least 10 times, and I havent even gotten one reply. not even one saying they have that on the website or anything

of course you don't want to TALK to them, they are assholes! but it is still a nice place to look for good cage ideas.

Shaved squirrel.

If /an/ has taught me anything, it's that every potential pet that isn't a cat or a dog is going to get cancer and food poisoning at the same time if you look at it wrong, assuming it doesn't die of natural causes a week after getting it.

my 2 girls don't smell at all really - i use carefresh bedding and change the cages 1x a week.

most only make loud noises for food or when you do stuff that sounds like food. it's kind of cute. and the noises they make when they're happy are awesome. also they grow out of the biting if you socialize em, usually.

they're definitely better than hamsters. only problem i've had is adopting two raised seperately - they fight and can't be trusted together, even though gps are supposed to like friends.

Guinea pigs are not for everyone. They need attention (more than a hamster, at least), enough room to run around, vitamin C, and they're noisy and messy.

But I've loved all the ones that I've had. They're sweet, if you like pets that are pretty inactive. Rats are good if you like things that are a little more intelligent and playful, hamsters are pretty much for irresponsible five-year-olds to screw with. But cheap and easy to take care of.

they're fucking psycho, but guinea pigs do need an assload of space so they can run around properly. pet store cages suck, but any kind of enclosure works (w/a solid floor) so long as you put shit on the ground in case they make a mess. i've got mine pseudo-potty trained to only use the bathroom on the carefresh cage area and run in the rest.

Guinea pigs are essentially squeaky potatoes with legs, which may be good or bad depending on what you want for a pet. I like them better than hamsters and rats simply because they're pretty inactive and make funny noises. They will pee on your lap, though. I always put a carpet square under mine just in case. As for vitamin c you can just give them veggies, they love those and will talk when they hear the bag or fridge door. Be sure to get a cage with solid flooring.

are they like hamsters in the fact that when they wanna bee they scooch their butt up and try to pee on where a wall meets a floor?

guinea pigs take a lot of work, much more then a dog or a cat. I would say its one of the harder animals to care for properly...

THey need a big cage, the bigger the better. Hay 24/7. No exercise wheels. You have to be SURE about sexing, that doesnt mean bang your guinea pigs..You should get more then one since they are sociable animals but make sure its not a male and female. some male + male get along..it depends on it. You should weigh it weekly. anywho, just read it all here http://www.guinealynx.info

why would someone shave a squirrel?

Dude, you haven't truly lived until you've shaved a squirrel.

Ive had guinea pigs all my life, in general give them ample food and a friend (very sociable critter) and theyll be happy for years

Forewarning, if you get your guinea pig an igloo they will become a turtle. I've had numerous guinea pigs over the years just live in their igloo, they would move around their pen to the food/water and never poke more than 1/3 their body out of the front, amusing but with multiple piggies it can become a point of conflict over who gets the igloo

I don't know why anyone would want them. My brother just got a pair of baby females. They're the most boring pet I've ever seen. They don't do shit.
They're socialized plenty and are perfectly tame, but they never do a goddamn thing when people are around. They just sit there.
He does seem to like them though. He got a giant cage, they'll probably be fine.

I've had at least 20 different guinea pigs while growing up (not all at the same time), so I've seen all different kinds of personalities.

I also taught them "tricks." I had one guinea pig who I taught to climb onto my hand when I clicked my fingernails on the floor. She would mind her own business and do whatever, but as soon as I clicked my fingernails on the ground, she'd come running and hop on my hand. She'd even shuffle her feet around until her hind legs were on my pinky and pointer finger.

Nah, they're not really clever enough to think of that so they just pee everywhere from what I remember.

They're nocturnal if I remember correctly from my sister's guinea pig. so if you're gonna get a guinea pig make sure you've got a spot to keep it in distant enough from your bedroom so that it doesn't keep you up all night with it's *fweep* *fweep* *fweep*-ing. otherwise they're awesome.

Also, I wonder if you can train them to be diurnal... I know you can with hedgepigs.

Most guinea pigs are active throughout the entire day and night, in my experience.

Well, I have two guinea pigs living with me. They're brothers, and they're really cute.. Got them when they were just babies, and now they're like 6 months old.

Anyways, Guinea Pigs are a lot more work than hamsters, but I find them to be much more enjoyable. My Guinea Pigs have never bitten anyone. Lets start with the work part of the guinea pigs. These guys poop SO FUCKING MUCH. I mean WHAT THE FUCK. their poops are like the size of your pinky nail, but they poop like 50 times a day.

But you know, it's worth it. If you're young, it's a good lesson on responsibility, and I just think they're rewarding. Everytime they hear me walking up the stairs, they start going WHEEEEEEK WHEEEEK, poking their little noses out the side of the cage, being all cute and stuff. They will also remind you when to feed them. They always squeak early in the morning and in the evening, to get me to feed them. When they hear my voice, they look up at me and start enjoying themselves. They make a cute noise when they walk "chut chut chut".. It's like a person whistling to themselves. It seems like they're having a good day xD. And they LOVE attention. If you play with them, they start jumping uncontrollably and running around, purring and all that stuff. They have adjusted their sleeping patterns to work with mine, so that when I'm home, they're out of their houses, and when I'm asleep/at work, they're asleep.
tl;dr - They're a lot of work. Bedding is changed once a week, water changed daily, given veggies twice a day, hay rack filled regularly, nails trimmed once every two weeks to a month, they're costly too.. All those little expenses add up. But they're a lot more vocal than hamsters, and they don't just ignore you like hamsters seem to do. They know you're there, they look at you, they communicate with you.
