The beagle was, technically, perfect. It fit its standard absolutely. One of the most perfect beagles ever. EXCEPT IT DOESNT FUCKING HUNT. That dog has no hunting drive. Its owners seem proud of it. Breeding it will do nothing to improve the breed. Therefore, it should not have won.

The akita, the standard poodle (I hate poodles but damn that was a good one), or even the bony-kneed weimeriner should have won.

Would have liked to see the dobie place, it was fucking gorgeous.

How the fuck do you know it doesn't have a hunting drive? Most pet Beagles I know still retain the strong tracking drive that comes with that nose, and I don't know why this one would be any different whether his owners have given him opportunity to use it or not. He definitely has the baying down.

The fact is most Beagles, like most breeds at Westminster, are primarily pets. Yes, they're people who still hunt with packs of Beagles, but those people are far and few between. It's like complaining about American Cocker Spaniels not being able to hunt, something they haven't typically done in years and most appear to have no interest in. The fact is their primary purpose as a breed have changed, and good breeders must find a balance between preserving their instincts and abilities that make them a beagle (not a problem in most beags I know) and adapting them to living as a family pet, not something rowdy pack dogs typically do naturally. It's easier maintain a balance like this in gundogs, and quite a few of the dogs in the sporting group held dual titles.

>> tigerfeather !CrwtTbFNxQ

The only reason he is complaining is because show animals are supposed to be as close to their standards as possible, and that includes drive and temperament. I agree, useless pretty dog.

>>210953

This is not a field contest or an earth dog trial, and they must judge a dog's instincts by how he behaves in the ring. They can't demonstrate whether the pointer will actually point game or the jack russel will actually kill rats. The judge cannot base his decision on trials or event that happen about side that room, simply what he sees in front of him. He did everything I would expect a Beagle to do in a show ring, include bay his little heart out.

He is not a beagle, he is a dog that looks like a beagle. I'm sorry, but the whole "its a show dog, who cares if it can't work" just pisses me off. American GSDs FUCKING SUCK at any kind of work because of their horrible slanting backs. Dogs that are shown and fit the new "standard" often cannot do what they were meant to do. Go to mexico and see if the chis there look anything like the rats that were in the ring today.

One of you got it right: the breeder needs to work out a balance between instinct/ability to work and their adherence to an aesthetic standard.

Go to any dog-oriented forum, especially kennel clubs or breed-specific groups, and ask them to recommend a breeder. You will ALWAYS tell you to go to a breeder that not only shows their dogs, but works them, "proves" them. Just because a dog can track or cart or run weavepoles does not make it a bad pet.

They need all these things to be a good dog. A dog should have them, or it should not be bred.
>> Bitter Anon !!WJLRQ1cwCyZ
I should probably note that I am also extremely against dogs that cannot survive without human intervention. Various bulldog-style breeds cannot give birth naturally. Any dog that needs surgery to be able to breathe (I'm looking at you, pushfaced bastards) should not be bred.

And what the fuck is with having a different standard for a coat variation? You can get longhaired chi pups from the same litter as a shorthair! A 13 inch beagle can come from the same parent as a 15! ITS THE SAME GODDAMN DOG.

Fuck you, american cocker spaniel.

chihuahuas were bred to be snack food, a source of meat. That's their only possible function. If there wasn't a taste test, I don't see how it could win the westminster.

So every GSD working in law enforcement or as an assistance dog is imported? The problem with most dogs that are supposedly true working dogs, especially those from European working lines, are that they are very difficult to keep as household pets or assistance dogs. They are simply too dominant and focused for most people to handle outside of those who focus on things like Schutzhund and are used to working with high drive dogs. Even in Germany, which has rigorous standards concerning their conformation German Shepherd's ability to perform, most dogs are not also working dogs but companions. The sloping back does not inhibit their ability to work or function as a dog, and many GSDs you see in the show ring hold multiple obedience and companion titles. And chihuahua were originally bred as glorified bed warmers, so what they look like physically hardly matters. The deer type chihuahua is no better or worse then the apple head type you saw in the ring. You see both in real life, but for whatever reason the AKC chose to focus on the apple head type chihuahua.

Also, directly from the breeder's site:
>>A good watchdog he can be trained to hunt. Known as the "singing Beagle" he has a sweet hunting voice, but if left alone may howl. Training will alleviate this problem. He will adapt well to a home or kennel environment, but new owners should be aware of natural hunting instincts and he should not be left alone for long periods of time or allowed to run freely unsupervised.

No domestic dog could typically survive without human intervention. You entirely invalidate your argument when you say that. You drop a chihuahua or even the average mixed breed in a deserted area and the odds of them surviving are next to nil. Even supposedly feral dogs survive (and most don't survive that long) only because they feed exclusively off what they can get from people (whether it be trash or roadkill). Most surgery preformed on Bulldogs and other short faced breeds is for the owner's convenience, mostly to relieve snoring.

Most breeds that feature multiple types (i.e. long and smooth coat chihuahuas) was to compensate for the amount of dogs being entered in events. That's why rarer breeds with few entries like the Brussels Griffon and Chinese Crested, both of which occur in two coat types, are shown as a single breed while the horribly popular Cockers and Dachshunds are shown in upwards of three categories.

re: Uno. It's a sign of the times, really. Nowadays the large majority of dog owners simply want companionship, so the lack of emphasis on hunting ability doesn't surprise me. At least a poodle didn't win. Mutts are still the best.

bullshit, if cats can survive in the jungle then i don't see why dogs couldn't
>> Anonymous
>>210998

Most domestic cats have a ridiculously short survival rate if left entirely to their own devices. I love people who think you can take a domestic cat and dump in a field expecting it to survive. Even feral cats (who again, spend as much time going through our trash as they do hunting mice) often don't live that long, and those are cats that have often been feral for generations. You drop a domestic cat in the jungle and odds are they wont be seen again.
>> tigerfeather !CrwtTbFNxQ
>>210963
I totally agree.

>>211002
My old cat could survive, that fucker actually rotated fields it hunted for mice and voles. One year it would hunt a field east of the house, the next year it would hunt the field north of the house, and so on until he got back around to the first field several years later. He ate those mice, maybe leaving some weird mouse internal organ at the front door if he felt like showing off. He even occaisionally hunted, killed and ate grouse and would chase foxes off the property. Bad ass 18 pound cat.

My current cats I really doubt they'd last long if left, as sad as I am to say. They're just not the hunting types.
>> Anonymous
>>211002
of course you aren't going to fucking see it again, its in the fucking jungle!!! It's sure as shit going to survive better than any piece of shit dog
>> Anonymous
>>210998

...Because dogs are different animals, you fuckwit. Just because a rat could survive in the jungle doesn't mean a hamster could. Cats are natural-born hunters, and even if it always has food, it's still going to hunt and kill prey. Dogs would have ALOOOT of trouble surviving in the jungle. For one, most of their coats don't blend in with anything in the jungle, and two, even if they weren't noticed, many of the breeds hardly have the speed of endurance of chasing. They can't take the heat or severe cold, either...generally, cats can stalk and pounce and prowl, and dogs can do none of that, not to mention they'd have to eat a crapload of rodents to survive, and they don't have the quiet steps for that.
>> Anonymous
>>211056
They would at the very least require a pack to survive
>> Anonymous
>>210950

FYI most of the people in norway who owns beagles, and other similar "short legged" hunting breeds use them for hunting.

It's probably a bit different in the united states, but I'm guessing that the majority of the people Northern/mid europe still use these dogs for hunting as well as house pets.
>> Anonymous
>>211058

Pretty much, yep.
>> Anonymous
>>211002
Cats are actually very good at surviving in environments that aren't prohibitively cold or damp (their fur makes them vulnerable to both very cold and very damp conditions). That's the reason why feral cats are such a big problem in areas were felines are naturally not found.

If dogs had been changed as little in domestication as cats, they might have better odds too, but in breeding different kinds of dogs, humans have effectively crippled them as effective survivors. It's only the very wolf-like ur-breeds like huskies and whatever the dingo descended from that find adapting to life in the wild reasonably easy. And even then they are better off if they have a pack, while cats do just fine alone.
>> Anonymous
survival is about environment, establishing a niche, etc. arguing whether you can plop a pack of domestic dogs in the wild and see them again a year later is a simplification.

>>211156

Both Dingos and Carolina dogs are poor examples in this situation because the ancestors of most pariah type dogs would only have been considered partially domesticated at best and exist in an almost separate gene pool when compared to truly domestic dogs. Most of these primitive "breeds", save Dingos and New Guinea Singing Dogs, would most likely not survived as a population without the ability to scavenge from human populations. Those two breeds, which are actually considered sub species or separate species, managed to find a niche on a continent with little competition from other predators and would not have been considered domestic by today's standard at the time they became feral.
