When you introduce new pets it should be on neutral ground--as in a new area where neither pet has been before. (or at the very least, hasn't been very often)
If that's not possible then you can clean the heck out of your house/apartment before you introduce the new pet.
The reason behind this is that your existing cat considers your house to be his territory. Now you've brought in a new cat, who is now invading Nexis's space....big suprise there is trouble! Anyway, if you do this in a foreign enviornment instead then the introduction takes place on "neutral ground" and neither cat is pissed at the other invading his space. Cleaning your room super-well has a similar effect. (your goal is to remove the smell of the existing cat, thereby un-marking it as his territory)
