Leopard Geckos are great, even though they're technically geckos, and not lizards. The average person doesn't care that there's a difference anyway.
They need feeding about once every five to seven days, a cage cleaning here and there, and fresh water. They can be handled, but you shouldn't handle one withing the first few weeks of moving it to a new location to avoid stress.
Also, get very fine sand for the cage, rocks or cedar chips will cause unintentional blockage in their digestive tract... which is bad. I think that's how I lost my first leo, but that was after 4-5 years.
They're quite nice-looking, too.
