So we've been having an issue with some dogs. Fucked up enough, they're my stepfather's and his buddies' dogs. There's four big ones, a lab/basset, a chow cross, the one in my pic, and one I don't fucken even know what it is.
The chow is a coward, and the one pictured (Lucky) is one we raised from a pup. Lucky is no problem at all. The chow killed the neighbor's cat, with the lab's assistance. That was bad enough, then they brought the damned fugly mutt. Now he's chasing horses, threatening people (I thought he almost had me today) and killing livestock.
My mental stepfather claims the dogs won't bite. And he's also bitching about the lack of customers. With great certainty I can say it's the fact you have five dogs, two which are determined to rip into you, barricading the doors/parkinglot/etc.
So any ideas how to go about sneakily getting rid of them? Poison is out. I have sneaky poultry and a dog I'd like to keep alive. Shooting is out, fuckers are smart enough to run when they hear the door open and run towards the road.

Is it his own livestock?

shooting him would be ideal, a quick and painless death is best, but posioning is optional.

It's my livestock, but I live on the land he owns (rent). Though the cat wasn't mine and they damaged a vehicle at the neighbor's trying to get it and I have no doubt with them running deer that they're going on other peoples' land as well. We had a similiar prob with a person at least a mile away, their dogs ran deer, ended up on our land, killed animals. Someone else went and shot the lead dog. No more running dogs.
Either way, I have a graveyard of chickens where they ripped the pens apart. The chickens range from $5-25 a pop. I was planning on making some money this year selling them. They ate the eggs and killed half my flock. He won't tell the employee to leave the damned dogs at home.
Poisoning at this point, I'd actually prefer a slow gruesome death.

Why can't you just shoot them?

perhaps leave some food out for them and nail 'em when they get the food? Or crack a window and shoot through there.

Shoot them and make him pay the bill for your lost livestock.

"....Shooting is out, fuckers are smart enough to run when they hear the door open and run towards the road."
One, it's illegal to shoot towards the road, especially since the road is relatively close to the house. My luck I'd hit a car and end up in jail over some fucken dogs.
Our windows are shitty too..they take some work to open. Trust me, we've tried. And there's only one window on that part of the house and the damned things can see you going to it.
My 22 is by the door. Trust me, if I get the chance they're gonners.
Getting them to pay for lost livestock is like squeezing blood from a turnip. This is white trash that drive with no license and have kept from paying taxes for years by claiming they have no job. Least that's what they claim.
I doubt animal control will do anything. Last time we had to catch and tie the damned pit up that was doing the same thing so he could pick it up and put it down. Wouldn't get it otherwise though tons of people had complained.

Oh c'mon. These are lame reasons and you can easily work around them. Dog sees you going to the window? Get curtains. Dog always appears towards the road? Put out some food AWAY FROM THE ROAD. Or, set up a long ways away. so you're not shooting towards the road. 50 yards should be plenty and it's still an easy shot. Surely there is some bushes or a shed or a vehicle or something you can hide behind or in. Forget about the 22 and get out the deer rifle. You do NOT want a wounded dog running home to his owner's place.

But, if you insist that you can't shoot 'em, get some traps. Not havaharts, but the body-hold traps used by fur trappers. A large conibear will do the job, and they're cheap too. Stake a few of those out one night and keep your dog tied up so he can't get hurt by the trap.

Wow, you're so amazingly clever. I never thought of all the shit you spouted. </sarcasm>
Have you ever heard a person walk through a trailor? It's loud. We have curtains on the windows. It's getting the damned windows open. It's hard as hell. Leaving the windows open are not an option. It's goddamned cold out, and gas is expensive.
It's not the food they're after, it's the chickens. They'll bypass the food for the birds.
I don't have all day to sit and wait for the dogs. They're sporadic when they let them out. We don't see them for days (but when we do, massacre). They also run an area that's quite a few hundred acres large. It's five large farms touching. I've had them come behind and try to take out the chickens (when I locking them in) and from the sides. They have more of a chance spotting me than I do them. Which they've proven when I've seen only ass ends bounding back into the woods before I even caught sight of them.
And the shed/car/etc also gives them hiding places to hide behind as well. Part of the problem is pens/cars/sheds in the way. If they weren't there there'd be dead dogs. Cars can be moved. Pens and sheds are less moveable.
And you act as if I'm a professional hunter. Havahart means shit to me and I'm not keen on using such traps. I've had to remove them when I find the poaching ones. I'm not to keen on explaining why someone walked into one or putting down one of my animals if they so happened to walk into it.

Don't bother creating a thread for advice if all you're going to do is keep pulling excuses out of your ass.

Sorry, I assumed you knew more about traps and such since you appear to live on a farm.

Havahart traps are those big cage traps that don't harm the animals. Conibears are a bit hard for me to describe here, but if google for it you'll find plenty of info. They are a killing trap.

Anyway, I digress. My thoughts were that you could set up somewhere with your rifle and simply wait for the dogs. Yes, I realize this is inconvenient. But, it could be worth it given the value of the damage the dogs seem to be causing. It might be boring or uncomfortable to you, but it's free, it's easy, and you can start anytime. I don't know if you have any friends that hunt, but if you do you could ask them for help. Chances are you'll find them more than willing.

But, otherwise, it's seems you're out of luck.

You want to poison them, but you said they don't go after food, only birds. And, it's a risk to your dog, not to mention I don't think it is legal. You don't want to use traps or shoot them, so I don't know what other options there are.

...contiuned.

When you put all those conditions on there, it does become difficult.

Me? I'd set up chair in sight of the birds: in a trailer or shed or behind a vehicle, or whatever, as long as it presents a good shot and some cover. If it's cold I'll wear a jacket. I'm going to sit there, not moving, as often as I can spare the time, with a rifle in my lap. And when I catch those dogs getting into the coop, it's going to be lights out.
