Someone please talk to me about woodpeckers.

Why do they peck wood? I'd like pics or video closeup of a woodpecker pecking wood also. Thanks.

I don't remember whether they're digging for worms or carving nests or both.

It's both, food and holes for nesting. Woodpeckers have some cool things like some toes that face forward and some that face backward so they can grip vertical trunks. Their brain cavity and the bones around it are also specially adapted to prevent injury while they peck wood.
As for video, OP, try youtube. They have EVERYTHING.

Ideas on getting the woodpecker in my yard to stop hammering on my shutters at 6 am in the morning every day? Banging on the window makes it fly off for ten minutes, and then it's right back at the shutters again.
I am open to suggestions of violence at this point, yes. Woody must be stopped.

Maybe put some metal flashing over your shutters for a week or so, until it gets the picture? If you inconvenience it, the woodpecker will likely find a different place to do its thing.

Um, dude, zygodactyly is rather common in the smaller birds. You know, having two toes facing backward and two forward, excellent for gripping things and doing the birdie equivalent to parkour.

make sure there are no insects in your shutters.

try putting up a hawk silhouette (black cut-out) that could deter him

That sounds like something my high school did in its stadium, only they used inflatable owls and sort of strung them up underneath the bleachers to deter bats and other flying nuisances.
Getting those owls down and letting them "fly" in the hallways was one of the few highlights of senior year.
