New Kitten is sick! Need Help! Anonymous
Today I went out to a farm to get one of several free kittens. Once I arrived I was horrified at what I saw. The mother and babies were filthy and looked ill, as the mother had not even attempted clean the babies. They had a lot of mucus around their eyes, with some of their eyes completely matted shut. So fast forward 5+ hours. The kitten I brought home hasn't really moved whatsoever from the cat carrier, I used a warm wash cloth to clear away the eye gunk and I'm worried about the cats lack of movement. I realize it might be severely traumatized but can anyone tell me if this could be the signs of something worse? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am worried sick.

(Picture is not said kitten.)

1. How old is the kitten?

2. Vet.

It's maybe 6-8 weeks old and as far as a vet, it's going first thing in the morning. No vets are on call where I live. :\
>> Anonymous
is it eating or drinking? how old is it?
keep the kitten warm and take the kitten to the vet or you're going to have a dead kitten in your hands.

also go talk to the farmer who has the kittens. he/she should be helping momma cat take care of her babies or better yet, ask if you can take all of them with you.
if he doesn't do shit, i'd call animal control or someone who would take the kittens from him and give them the medical attention they need.

I have fresh food and water right outside of the carrier and it hasn't moved much from when it barely hopped around when I was trying to clean it's eye. But even then it wasn't moving much at all. The fucking people I got them from don't care if they live or die and good luck trying to convince animal control to do jack shit. I personally want to take them all but I just can't...

Do the ticking clock in a towel thing if you're not holding him.

It's old enough where that isn't the case, besides that it doesn't exactly like to be held. It hasn't actively tried to bite me but it does try to scuttle away. I just want to make it feel as comfortable as possible so it doesn't get any sicker than it already is.

By the way thanks for all fo the suggestions, I just hope the kitten is alright in the morning.
>> Anonymous
give him some milk, he's probably lacking nutrition
>> Anonymous
beat them til they straighten up

Shes a healthy enough weight oddly enough. The mother fed them not only with her body, but with what looked like a smashed sparrow near their bedding

Then it could be that his legs joint has stiffen up a little from not moving too long. Either that or he's just stressed from change of environment.

Signed, change of environment.

When I got my kitten and the first thing it did when I put it on the floor was find its way to the laundry room, and hide there. Then it slept in its litter box for a few days, coming out sometimes during the day.

Cat is 2 years old now, doing great.

Hey OP. Listen to this one.

2nd'd and
3rd'd.

Call the fuckers. I have no patience for bullshit toward animals.

Er... are you sure the kitten is weaned yet? Might want to get some kitten milk from the pet store.
>> Anonymous
feed it milk, NOW!.
with yor finger, it is bulls*** that cats dont like milk.
actually dip your finger in milk and put it into its mouth,
seriously.
otherwise it might die if starved

kill yourself. That farmer is doing the right thing by giving the cats away. He could be selling them to fine asian restaurants, after all.

COWS MILK IS NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR A MOTHER CATS MILK. If this cat was too young to be weaned, it needs special milk. Get that shit to a vet.

You're a fucking idiot. Cow's milk should NOT be given to cats, as it is unhealthy. Just because a creature likes something doesn't mean it's good for them. Just like you and the french fries, fattie.

That's a good way to make a kitten project feces from it's ass like spray paint. It's not near as entertaining as it sounds. You cant aim them properly or anything.

OP: The kitten may have an eye infection, hence the "gunk". Seriously, take it to a vet as soon as you can. If you somehow cannot take it to a vet (I'd assume it's morning now for you, though it's only been four hours since you posted OP), massage it's back. Seriously, just knead it's shoulders like you would a human's (obviously don't press as hard), then work your way down it's spine. It's skin should get looser and easier to move, a sign that it is relaxing. If it is not purring and utterly in love with you after a few minutes, then it has problems beyond not being taken care of by it's mother, and a vet is your only option.

Some potential problems:
Feline aidzzzzz
Joint/bone issues
Worms
being scared shitless because you took it from it's mother and drove around with it.

milk is terrible for cats! give it paint thinner.

1) It's a farm cat, so it's probably mostly feral.
2) 2 months old with little human contact makes for a badly socialized cat.
3) It may have feline distemper, from your description, or simply be in the advanced stages of some other illness. Cats only get filthy when something is seriously wrong, this is coming from someone who has had probably 12 indoor/outdoor cats.
4) 2 months should be OK for wet food and slightly moistened kibble, but buy some kitten formula from the pet store just to be safe. It's not that costly.
5) Call animal control, but consider that while you'll be punishing the farmer the cats may also be put down if they are ill or nobody takes them.

milk alone isnt good for the kitten but i found a mixture that is just as good for a kitten just like moms milk. i used it when i found my kitten who had been attacked by her on mother and is now in perfict health today. use 1 egg with 1c of milk and 1 tabelspoon of olive oil. the egg and milk and oil combine is just like moms milk. you can aslo ass a pinch of vitamin powder to it to help it get stronger faster. after about 2 weeks of it it should be able to eat soft cat food.

this is my kitten today she had just woken up after napping with my rat

Call a vet. Most likely, a bunch of the kittens have eye infections. The same thing happened to my cat. He was part of a small litter, and when they were found, the mother was gone and they were filthy. They all had eye infections as well. One died, and another one had to have one of it's eyes removed because the infection because aggravated and risked spreading further.

The kitty needs to be taken to the vet's office. It probably has an eye or upper respiratory infection.

It probably also has intestinal parasites (very likely).

Also DO NOT GIVE THE KITTY COW MILK. Buy kitty milk from pet store.

COW MILK WILL GIVE KITTEN DIAHRREA since they lack the proper enzymes to digest it. At such a young age, it could kill it.

After about 1 month old, the kitten can start to eat kitty food moistened with kitty milk or water.

Inquire about getting nutrient supplements at the vet, milk syringes, kitty milk, antibiotics, eye ointment, and dewormer.

Also have the vet test for ear mites, do a feline aids and leukemia test, and a fecal test.

ITT people who know nothing of farms.

Also, cats are a dime a dozen.

Does it mean they should be mistreated? No, but a farmer has bigger things to worry about than his mouse killing cats (he probably has more than he wants already.)

Hey, I live on a farm and aside from my rats, I make sure ALL of my animals are healthy.

It could also be feline leukemia. Make sure to have it checked. Unlike our leukemia, it is highly contagious and just as deadly.

When you see the vet tomorrow, check to see if they take in animals there. If they do then go back and get the rest of the kittens and take them there. If not try the closest humane society, they may charge a small fee, between $5-10, to take them in.

1)Report the hillbilly to animal control. Even if they do nothing, it can't hurt to try, and you will have the moral highground.
2)Make sure the kitten is set up to get used to it's new suroundings. Take kitty, water, food, + blankets, tuck them in to a corner, (where you can see him/her and he/she can see you) but where no one is going to be poking about much. Aviod loud angry noises, and so forth.
3)Do NOT give the kitten milk, unless you buy that special "cat" milk. If you do, you risk making it more sick. some cats can take cow milk, some can't, but since those who can't can get -very- sick, it's best not to try.
4)Take kitten to vet in the morning.
5)Do whatever the vet tells you, no matter how many /b/tards disagree.
6) Come back tomorow or on caturday to tell us how it turned out.

my cat has feline herpes(leukemia) and he has the hacking and nasal discharged blah blah... anywho, this IS NOT contagious to humans it can only be transferred by sexual contact with other cats OR them eating or drinking out of the same bowls as the infected cat.
>> Cat God
Okay, for the mucus thing, that's actually very common in kittens, especially young ones. You can get it treated, or just let it run it's course, there's not really much risk in it. I would get it treated, just because it's less nasty....
