I figure, hey /an/ also includes Nature.

Sun is a part of nature, so I guess this is the best place to go. I really don't want to go to /b/ for advice, but I'm getting a little deseperate.

I'm a big computer nerd. I'm trying to distance myself away from computers and what not and focus a little more on physical training.

I've been pale for a very, very long time, and I figured that I should go ahead and get a tan. But how should I go about this? Just chill in my backyard and let the sun do it's thing?

We have a pool at my country club, but I'm a little embarrassed over my skinny frame, so I don't really want to go there if I have to.

Any suggestions, /an/?

In return, I give you a tiger underwater.

The sun is the devil. Stay away from it, all it does is waste energy.

Tanning is not safe. Going outdoors is a good idea, but wear sunscreen. A hike in the woods is a good way to spend the day.

How is it not safe? DA SKIN CANZURZ?

Just grab a book or something and go sit in your yard when it's sunny outside. If you're in the sunlight long enough you'll get tan. If you hardly ever got outside there's not reason to worry about skin cancer.

If you have a laptop you could bring it outside and tan without needing to get off the computer. You'd also be once extremely lazy ass.

Please don't listen to the idiots telling you to go out without any sunscreen.

I'm as pale as a fucking ghost and I went out to the beach for only an hour or so, and came back with sunburns so bad on my legs that I couldn't move, or the blood would rush to them and they felt like the skin was going to explode. They were fucking PURPLE.

Wear something like 45+ if you go out, LEARN FROM MY MISTAKES PLEASE.

This is good advice, but for the love of god wear sunscreen. You'll still get tan if the SPF is low, but you're less likely to get sunburned. If you get sunburned too badly, the skin will just peel off and you will be left with nothing to show for your pain and agony except new, fresh skin.

You did it wrong. You don't wear sunscreen for like 15 minutes, then you put on something like spf 10 and you'll get a perfect tan with no burn.
A good tan requires more than one day at a time. You're very likely to burn if you're pale the first "session" in the sun, so just go out for 15 minutes and then go back indoors. Do 15 minutes a day, and probably by the 3rd day you'll have a good tan.
If you want to be in the sun longer you NEED sunscreen. Like I said, SPF 10 is good for tans. You don't need anything stronger unless you're going out 5 hours or something.
But it also depends on you. Some people tan/burn easier than others, so you might want to start with a higher SPF.
Again, on a sunny day don't sit in the sun longer than 15 minutes without sunscreen. Also it's best to choose a windy day because you'll otherwise get hot fast. Obviously it has to be a sunny day.
Best time is between 10am and 2pm. After 5 you don't really have to worry about sunburns, even if the suns up until 9pm. Actually that's when I usually go for a hike just because of that.

also, this depends on where you live. Back in northern Europe, I never use sunscreen except if I'm going to the beach an entire day. it is better to lie on a blanket and read, because then you can turn after a while so you don't get a tan on your front only. Start with only about 15 minutes, and eventually you won't need sunscreen at all (except for the cancer shit).

You're embarrassed by your skinny frame? WTF. I'd rather skinny than a big fat blob in the pool. Seriously, it doesn't matter if you're too skinny, even if you're a guy.

Go to the country club pool, and swim. You get a much better tan while you're underwater, because the water magnifies the sun and the tan is perfectly even. You won't get an even tan like that lying on a lounge chair sitting in the sun.

Actually, the risk of getting skin cancer is much lower than the risk of having adverse effects later in life due to vitamin D deficiency, especially if you are a female. Enjoy your brittle bones, SPF 80 fags.

a tiger must always make it's most pissed off face when it goes underwater

Actually, the WORST time is actually between 10 am and 2 pm--that's when UV rays are their strongest. For someone who's really pale, just going out, period, preferably for 10-15 minutes at a time and sometime earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon should be fine. Exposure to the 10am to 2pm super-heavy UV rays will not just bake our OP to an unnattractive crisp, but will probably damage him mightily.

Other safety precautions for OP: tanning for the express sake of tanning (ie: tanning beds, or roasting like a turkey for hours on end with no protection outside) is a *terrible* idea, especially for a pale person (Skin cancer is pretty prevalent in my pale white-ass family, so I KNOW this shit). "Base tans" are also not that great... ANY sun damage (and btw, any "color" is considered "sun damage") is STILL sun damage, though admittedly a little tan here or there is still better than a really bad burn. As for health, if you go out for 10-15 minutes a day without sunscreen or with a little SPF 15 on your sensitive bits (ie: face skin), you should be fine in terms of getting your needed vitamin D and the exposed parts of you should get enough healthy color that you still look good (essentially, taking a quick walk like you would ANYWAY to get to and from your car, get the mail, go to the grocery store, etc. should be enough). If you're still not confident enough in your skin tone, ONE or TWO times in a FAKE tanning machine (ie: a misting tanning bed) should darken you enough without turning you orange, while certain new, though girly products, at the CVS advertising to give you a gradual tan over the course of *several days* are another safe experiment. Be careful though; again, you can turn orange with too much crap.

Hope this helps.

don't get a tan.
your skin will only age faster.
a bit of sun everyday is a good thing though, since the body can create vitamin D only with sunlight.
