I've got a problem. I use astroturf in my ball pythons cage and every morning I wake up she is hidden beneath it. She stays in her hiding place for most of the day so I don't see why she would do this.

Is it dangerous that I have an under tank heater and she does this?

Yes.

Would there be any reason why she's doing it? Her hiding place is big enough for her.

Well, as reptiles tend to self-regulate their heat, she's looking to gain maximum warmth. However, they sometimes don't know when it's too hot. So it's not that your python is looking for a better hiding place as much as more warmth. Plus I think they tend to burrow sometimes, but I may be wrong on that.

Using a bedding of plastic astroturf is not the best idea. Plastic+heat=toxic fumes. You would be better off using the astroturf over the cage base, like in the hiding place, as it is good for when reptiles shed skin.

...what is this plastic you speak of? Astroturf is not made of plastic. It is also one of the best bedding solutions for reptiles.

Ah, I see. I haven't bought the stuff since I layered my deck with it and it was of a polyurethane base ergo plastic. They must have made great strides with it since.

Either way, the snake is probably looking for more warmth is the crux of my statement.
