I've always admired how beautiful Siberian Huskies are and have always wanted to get one. Can any experienced owners of these beautiful dogs share their experiences?

Mainly want to know about about how affectionate they are, if they have numerous health complications, and what not.

add warm climates to this... i live in texas and see way to many miserable huskies around here... and the owners are too fucking stupid to bother shaving them in the summer (110 degrees people!)
>> Anonymous

I have a huskey and i live in texas, my huskey loves to play and is very vocal, he likes to "Talk" so to speak. they have a very distinct personality. very affectionate, but do not get along with many other dogs. Very territorial. Some aggressive when eating. Very stubborn, won't listen to you unless they feel like it. And of course if you are in a southern state, during the summer keep a kiddie pool in your backyard with cool water in it, always lots of drinking water. My huskey is an indoor dog so he goes outside when he wants but when he gets hot he comes back in.

sounds like you're one of the few that actually try to care for yours =>

one faggot called me one time while i worked in a dog grooming facility, complaining that his dog smelled like mildew and asking if they made mildew preventing shampoo. i explained to him that they don' because it's not normal for dogs to smell like mildew, and i asked if his dog had a thick coat, he said yes. so i suggested shaving the dog and he immediately said no and hung up

my point here is... most people are too stupid to properly care for a cold climate dog in warm climates

and yes. huskies are VERY hyper. very stubborn. and not too social. they're sled dogs, bred to run cross country and all that... not the best of pets for some people, but if OP feels they can support a dog like this, go ahead. i know i could never care for a husky, so i don't try. that wouldn't be fair to the dog.
>> Anonymous
OP here, I live in NYC so the climate heres a bit colder than normal but can be mild. I happen to live in a city apartment so I guess hopes of me ever getting one are in vain?

Can I just play with him lots, take him on long city walks, maybe run around in a big open park playground?

They need to RUN and then RUN and RUN ALOT MORE !

NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER,EVER,EVER,EVER,EVER,EVEREVERREVEREVEREVEREVER

SHAVE A FUCKING HUSKY YOU GOD DAMN RETARDS. JESUS MOTHER FUCKING CHRIST.

Do you know what their thick coat does? It keeps the Warmth in when it's cold....

AND THE FUCING HOT OUT WHEN IT'S WARM.

AND IT PROTECTS IT FROM HARMFUL UV RAYS.

GOD DAMN.

This information is EVERYWHERE. OF course the fucking husky owner hung up on you, he knew better than you!!!

The mildew is because the dog went into water, and he did not properly dry the dog afterwards, which allowed the growth of fungus. Thick coated dogs need to be completely dried, otherwise the topcoat feels dry but it's damp in the undercoat.

GOD DAMN.

True. Need a 6' fence with live wire on top and bottom to prevent climbing and digging. Some huskies don't need it. Or crate train, or kennel on a concrete surface with a roof.

>>210710
You're the idiot. Don't shave huskies, just keep them in cool places. Their fur regulates heat and cooling. Take that away and they can't cool down or heat up normally.

>>210714
The guy was both right and a idiot. You were just an idiot.

He was right about not shaving the husky, but where he was an idiot was in that he likely let his dog get in the water a lot, and did not dry him properly in between sessions. So fungus built up in between coats. He didn't need to be shaved, he just needed to be dried. The only time to shave a husky is for medical reasons.

They are also VERY social and pack oriented (this should be common sense in regards to the breed). Most people confuse their extremely aggressive playing for not being social. The northern breed saying goes "You can tell if it's play or not by how much blood spills"

>>210742
They are ultra-vocal, so he will bother the residents around you if you have neighbors unless you have your own house.

They certainly can be happy with long walks but you need to get a indestructable crate and crate train him. None of that wire or plastic crate shit.

However, i advise waiting until you have your own house and more space.

I'm overreacting? Someone shaved my husky rescue before I adopted him. It's 1 1/2 years now and 3 blown coats, and it's finally almost done. It might be less depending on how extensive the shaving was, as mine was pretty bad. After last coat blow he's really looking like a husky now.

i wasn't even talking about a full-on to the skin shave. i was talking about a reasonable one that would help the dog out a little in over 100 degree weather (the norm where i live) whose owner doesn't have the sense to give it water to cool off in/doesn't want to bring it into their house

Read. The. Fucking. Links.

Shaving them makes them hotter. Not cooler. Understand? This is not rocket science here. Do you know the way dogs cool? They do not sweat like us. They pant. Understand? Do I need to baby talk you here? Any. Shaving. Makes. Them. Hotter. Not. Cooler.

Is this really that hard to understand? Google it. Stop shaving huskies. At all. For the dogs sake. You're making it harder on them, not easier.
>> Anonymous
>>210827

I'm not denying that there are plenty of retarded owners, I'm just saying that by shaving them, at all, you are not helping the dog, they need their coat to stay cool in the heat. Without it, they can't regulate their cooling, so they get hotter.

I was also thinking of getting a husky of some description. My question, /an/, is would it be hurtful to the dog if I got a custom-made harness (almost like for a guide dog, but padded and comfortable for him), and using two leads (one on either shoulder of the dog) let him pull me on my rollerblades? Of course I would also be skating as fast as I could to make sure I'm not putting too much strain on the dog, and I only weigh 114lb and I'm not about to get any heavier. I hear everyone saying these dogs were made to pull things and need a buttload of exercise. Where I live there's plenty of walking trails, so I was thinking I could to that for about 5km every day and the walkies part would be taken care of. Good idea, bad idea, need fine tuning? Picture somewhat related, if I were to get a dog it'd be brown and called Milo.

Niggerhusky owner here (pic related)

Everything you hear about the breed is going to be a guideline, not set in stone. You MAY have a dog that won't try to get out of a fence, you MAY have a dog that needs a 8 foot fence instead of 6.

There is some give in the breed personality standard. But I would not get one if I was not prepared to modify myself and my house to fit his needs.

A shock collar will work shit. A shock collar coupled with a, say, 4' fence? possibly. Their intense drive + thick coat will be like a extreme andrealine rush to the point they can't feel it.

>>211123

So many wrong in this post, not funny. They love kids. If any Siberian ever showed even an once of aggression or dislike for kids, they got culled. This is because they had children sleep with the dogs for warmth.

They are designed to work for long amount of time on minimal food. They will require less food than almost any other dog of the same size.

They are extremely intelligent, learn super easy as long as you are smarter than your dog. I know it's hard sometimes to be more intelligent than a fucking dog. Jesus.

They are nomad dogs, they have no concept of "running away" or "home". How can you run away form home when you have no home?

Northern breeds are not for everyone. You have to be active, flexible, independent, and smart to own one.
>> Anonymous
>>210699
the harness would not cause any harm to the huskey. as you already know these dogs were raised and used to pull sleds which were packed with stuff and people. so i don't think it would cause nay harm.

Niggerhusky dude again...

Hahahahaha. You're funny. Let's just keep it simple, ok? LOL. I'm not trying to make fun of you here but you get A for effort.

Ollie (niggerhusky) pulls me on a sled, bike, rollerblade, snow skis. Sledding is sledding, but the rest is called bike-joring, ski-joring.

In this case, just look for skijoring gear.
'
http://alpineoutfitters.net/Secure/Scripts/ProdList.asp?idCategory=24

Have fun. You don't even need to try to keep up with him, just let him pull you! Ollie pulls all 195 pounds of me by himself. However, do realize Siberians are FAST. Very fucking fast. So teach him how to speed up or slow down.
>> Anonymous
>>211345

Fuck, niggerhusky guy again... stop posting people.

The harness this person described will harm the dog. You need a actual harness. A harness from pestmart or those guide harnesses will put weight on all the wrong places.

So it will damage his muscles. Get a real harness. X back should do you well.
>> Anonymous
>>211341

Assuming the dog is full grown (over a year), he won't even feel you dragging behind. You should be more worried about getting yourself injured when your dog drags you through a bush/tree while going 30 mph.
>> Anonymous
>>211353

With Ollie, I taught him to move based on where I drag the leash. If I pull the leash and go "easy easy" he slows down. Hike is go and also speed up. If your dog is lead trained and won't pull against your will, you should be able to pull the dog back and stop yourself.

If you live in an apartment w/o a secure fence (i.e. 6ft tall, wire *2x4s buried underneath) sorry but forget it.

I currently own 2 huskies. One is generally lazy and only hyper once or twice a day. The other is a spaz all day and craves attention constantly. Number one will generally listen to you, number 2 will ignore you unless he wants something. Also, number 1 rarely even considers escaping. Number 2 however escapes my apartment a few times a month, leading to a car chase. Yup.

Personalities differ greatly, but always ALWAYS plan for dogs like my #2.

I had to move into an apartment with no fence this year, and the main form of exercise is going home on the weekends to let them run out in the country and on weekdays my roomate and i hook them up to a harness and let them pull us on rollerblades around the park/a few city blocks....its a blast.

If you are still even vaguely considering a husky, please for the love of god make war plans and DO SOME FUCKING RESEARCH

The petsmart harnesses will damage your dog's shoulders, chest, and legs. This is not a "might" "maybe" "possibly". It absolutely will damage his body. Those harnesses are not designed for pulling.

Now, I know you will BAWWWWW about price.

But... real, sledding harnesses, designed for pulling... is CHEAPER. Fuck. Stop torturing your poor dogs and get them a real harness.

I live in Houston TX. We rescued a German Sheperd/Alaskan Husky mix. A bit skittish but very sweet dog (had been mauled by a cat as a pup, we assume from the wounds she had when we found her). Aside from that, she was a typical Husky, very independant. We shaved her in the summer (with sheep shears, her coat had a tendency to destroy anything designed for dogs). Before shaving, she would be sluggish and obviously hot and unhappy. After shaving, she would frolick happily like a puppy. This is my evidence refuting the "don't shave huskies in hot summer" post.

May not apply to Siberians, they are a bit different from Alaskans.
