Hey, /an/.

I'm by no means a /an/ person, but I'm looking for some answers. I live in Vermont, USA. So today I decided to take advantage of my generally-boring location and go on a nature walk. I've had a trail into desolate woods but never tried it, so I just went with my sister. We walked/jogged for about 15 minutes, just generally exploring and enjoying the amazing scenery (aren't I a nature-loving guy? ;)) when we crossed a half-collapsed plank bridge. I stopped my sister, and lying right in front of us were about 5 massive slugs and a skull of some sort.

My first instinct was that it was a deer skull. After all, I'm in Vermont, and we've seen deer around the area before. But after scanning google image, I think I'm probably wrong. I took a few pics with my phone but I have no way of getting them on my computer at the moment. Kind of a bummer, but I'll describe it.

First of all, the state of the skull was surprising. It was alone. The jaw was missing and I wasn't about to lift it up to see if there were teeth. The front end was, like, ripped off. It had ~4 vertebre sticking out of the back of it's skull, sloping up, making me think, maybe it's an animal that would naturally dip it's head? I'm no expert. :P. Anyways, I was just in shock. It looks like it was rather old but preserved by the winter. While not spotless, there was no meat, though there was a chunk of brown near it that two slugs were having their way with. But what kind of animal would do this? (And if not an animal, I have some fucked up guy living near me...) Kill an animal, destroy it's face, and then drag it far away from the rest of it's body? I explored the rest of the area for bones with no success.

Post to be continued... Pic unfortunately not the pic I took. Just google image of a deer skull. :\

The face had no antler locations as far as I could see. The whole top of its skull was missing, you could see through the bottom of it. It's eyes were sockets, I believe (low-res pics when viewing on phone D:), in that they were big deer holes like google image shows. They were tiny and more cupped, I believe. It had two medium'ish areas on the nasal passage, or so I believe.

Any idea what kind of animal this could be? What kind of animal would kill it like this? Is it safe to be in my woods? :P. The size of the skull, I believe, could be that of the size of a deer skull. I suppose perhaps a bit smaller.

Sorry for the long post. :\
