Hey /an/, I have a problem with my cat. He seems to be having real trouble breathing, almost like he needs to hack up a hairball, but he has been doing it for almost two days. He also is lethargic and refuses to eat anything. I dont have the money for the vet right now, so I was wondering if there was anything i could do for him here at home. Does any Anon know what may be wrong?

Someone told me once itll help clear his throat if you make him eat a little ice cream. maybe that will work?

What kind of answer did you expect from a bunch of anon autodidactics? Especially with your "broad" description.
Did I succumb to trollbait, or are you really the kind of person whose pets always seem to die, "for some reason?"
At least you bothered to even ask, so I'll do my best to answer. I'm guessing your kitty either has an airway or lung infection, or the cat flu. Either way, it needs medical treatment. I suggest you call up some friends or people you know and ask them where a good, but cost-effective vet is. I very much doubt this is something that will go away by itself, since it has gone off its food.
If it were still eating, this would be a completely different matter, but you need to take this more seriously than you are at the moment.

Oh, and if you don't have the money, then ask other people for it or ask some vets if you can make part-payments! Get a loan at a pawnbroker.
Swallow your pride. There is another's life at stake here.

ok, thanks for the advice. I will try to get him an appointment at the vet tomorrow.

Try talking to the ASPCA in your area, they usually can recommend vets that are easy on the wallet.

And if your cat won't eat, bribe it with something other than cat food, like some chicken.

I tried tuna earlier, and he wouldnt have anything to do with it

Just making sure you know:
The staple diet should be cat food in cans or dry food. Never human tuna or raw fish/chicken. Lean fresh beef mince is a good snack. Maybe you meant "Tuna cat food," but I'm making sure here. If your kitty is a kitten, it *requires* kitten food.

i know that. i was only using the tuna to make sure he really wasnt going to eat anything

It sounds like it could also be some form of poisoning, and if you think he wont last till you can take him/her to the vet without food, go buy a little bottle of pedialite (a juice in the childrens drug section that has electrolites in it, about $6) and force about 3ccs of that into him. It wont hurt and should help his body until he can get to the vet.

Could be heartworm. Whoo, death!

Oh my. Did we go through our food training at the pet store today? The cat will survive, and you CAN feed adult food to kittens, they'll just have stunted growth (and a little bit of mental stunt, too, but not a lot).

OP, anything you can get your cat to eat at this point will be better than starving.

Sounds to me YOU'RE the one who needs some training at the pet food store. Adult food can also cause severe stomach upsets and disease due to malnutrition.
Did you know humans can survive by eating dirt? Let's throw away the food pyramid.

What makes you even think the difference between adult and kitten cat food is as dramatic as the difference between food and dirt for humans?

While we're at this, let's start with the usual petafag stupidities: did you know microchipping your pet so that it gets identified quickly if you were to lose it could CAUSE THE PET CANCER. ZOMG.

My condolences, OP. Heart problems, especially in cats, are difficult to treat and deal with.
