I don't really like Carefresh personally, especially not the kind in the OP's picture. I find that it creates a very foul odor when mixed with animal urine. And even before then, it smells like damp, cheap brown paper towels they use in schools and shit.
I've heard that the very expensive Carefresh Ultra White, or whatever, can minimize well, but I think I saw a big bag of it at our PetSmart for like 20 bucks or so.... no thank you!
I prefer to use aspen or kiln dried (important!) pine. I was using Kaytee SoftSorbent for awhile for a mouse who had developed a bedding allergy to pine, but he lost all his fur when exposed to that, and apparently, there are other reports of that happening, followed by death - mine didn't die thank goodness!
I also sometimes use organic soil that I bake to sterilize it. It minimizes odors so fantastically, but is not as visually attractive as wood shavings, IMO.
