It's so cute that a Japanese person naturally had to draw a porn manga about having sex with these...

thanks for the information

now I would like to know why, in english, it's "platypus" (an easy name right) and, in french, it's "Ornithorynque"... Did my ancestors want to make us mad when we have to write it? (And I had to for an exam -_- )

Same in Danish - Næbdyr which means Beak Animal.

In french Ornithorynque means... well, it means nothing. Like most of the animal's name we have. Except for rouge-gorge (a bird) who actually means red neck...
>> Anonymous
well does "platypus" mean anything?

Platypus is greek for: flat-feet/flat-foot.
It seems to have been named for the least weird of its characteristics oddly enough.
>> Anonymous
For the record, only males have the venomous spine on the paw... foot... dealie.

Last I checked, they don't live long in captivity (though still > 1 yr?). They seem docile enough.

It would have been more funny if God had made these the dominant intelligent species on the planet. Imagine these things building spaceships and colonizing the universe

I was looking through and old book of animals, from the 1800's, and it seems that Platypus were called "Duck Moles" back then.

I would guess they don't live long in captivity as they are so shy. They are shit scared of people. You can see them in the wild but generaly have to go sit on the river before dawn and not move or make one sound and then you can see them until the get's light then they go hide again.

I went spotting at a national park a few years back and after two had come out some bright spark took a photo, flash was off but they sound the camera made scared them off. They just went back underwater, didn't come up again all morning.
