Dear /an/,

I'm adopting a one year old german shepard puppy. It's been a few years since I've cared for a dog and though I'm a kind, animal loving guy, I'm worried that I may not be ready to accept all the responsibilities of caring for a young canine.

What do I need to know about the dog's health, as in how frequently should I visit a vet and what vitamins or supplements should I give him, if any? What kind of toys, foods, accessories are best? What other advice should I seek before taking in this dog?

First off I don't think 1-year-old dogs are considered puppies anymore. Am I mistaken?

He's pretty small, only weighs about 35lbs. I don't know the technical definition of a puppy, my apologies.

SCHWEINEHUND! means "sit down" in german.

Vitamins and the like are mostly a waste of money on a healthy dog if you feed them a good diet, in my opinion (as in, not purina). Get him in to some obedience classes with you even if he has all of his training, just to reinforce a bond and get him socialized in public. He should go to a vet as soon as possible after you adopt him, just to make sure he's healthy-- discuss the rest of your questions with the vet. Also, buy books.

A great source for dog information, if you'd rather get your info free: http://www.canismajor.com/dog/

Also, I doubt he's a purebred if he's only 35 pounds at one year. They should be mostly done growing by that point, and 35 is hardly typical shepherd size.

don't get a dog if you're not 100% ready to take care of it, retard! And stop asking /an/ about how to care for it -- ask your vet! Dumbfuck.

I think German Shepherds are known for hip and lower back (hind back?) problems. But also easier to train, thus their popularity as police and war patrol dogs.

Lots of people get help here on /an/. Of course, it is usually not very helpful help.

Also, to make you feel at home, die in a fire, you screeching cockfag.

On topic: The dog is underweight for a German Shepherd. Seriously. It may be some kind of smaller herding dog mix with GSD markings. Please see a vet and do some serious research. Google "puppy training " and "new dog owner" and such.

I fostered a 40 pound German shepherd/husky mix, but I'm pretty sure that's as skinny as that size dog would get before keeling over and dying. So it's probably mixed with a smaller breed, or isn't a year old.
