I caught this black widow outside of my house. i killed it by placing in a jar with a nail polish remover soaked cotton ball. Any ideas on how to preserve it? I was think in a jar filled with something. any ideas would be useful.

Maybe something like this?

Do you know if that would degrade the quality of the spider?
I need to be careful not to damage it. But if it wont that would work great

I have no idea if it will degrade it.
But if it does, just get another one.
It should be easy since they will be crawling in your bed tonight.

Hey guys, thanks for the suggestions. I don't want to mount and frame it because without some sort of resin coating it will be more easily damaged and I'm not big on maintenance. As far as getting another, believe it or not were actually using pesticide to try get rid of them. We happy to like our small children, pets and old people... well two out of three anyways. 73060, sorry not sure how to link to a previous comment, great suggestion but I would prefer a resin because I would like it to last a life time if possible. Thanks guys and if anyone has other long term low upkeep suggestions or information about the effects of resin on these guys it will be much appreciated.

Buy a two part epoxy resin at your local hardware store and coat it in that.

The two part epoxy resin would work if it wont damage the spider, the same question I cant seem to find n answer to about the first. Any chance you know if it will?

Just get a jar big enough to hold the spider and fill it with either isopropyl alchol (rubbing alcohol, the purer the better) or ethanol (Everclear will work). Keep the jar sealed tightly and it will last for a good long time. This is the way the marine biology department preserves fishes at my college and most of them have been around since the early 1970s and they are still in pretty good condition.

that should work. Thanks for the help, although I am still interested in if there is a resin based solution

A Google search revealed this thread discussing preserving of praying mantids:

They recommend using clear resin.

Have you seen one? its got this design on it so if it isn't could you tell me what it is? I'm only guessing because its black and has an Hourglass, the two most distinctive features of black widows or so i thought.
>> Anonymous
definitely either brown or black widow. looks darker than brown to me. is the hourglass red? can't really see from pic

the spider is black, the marking is a little faded cant tell if its red or orange

That is surely a black widow. It looks like a male, possibly immature. They keep the lighter markings on the legs until they molt to their final size. Some don't ever lose the markings. Males are usually smaller than females too.

Males don't have the rounded abdomen like that, that's an immature female.

Definitely a black widow. Thank you for killing that bitch. If you want to kill more spiders, you're welcome to come over to my place and clean out my windowells

Thanks for clearing that up, I didn't think there was anything else it could be but wasn't 100% certain.

Unfortunately I'm having enough trouble keeping the dangerous spider population away from my own house.

Ack, you're right, it is a female. Forgive me, Anonymous, for my late-night inaccuracies.
