To all of you idiots who buy hay for your rabbits, chins, guinea pigs, etc. in the little bags they sell at pet stores..

YOU ARE FUCKING IDIOTS.

Do you realize that, based on Petco's prices, you are paying around TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS for 60# of hay, roughly the size of a normal large bale? The same normal large bale that sells for anywhere from around $5-10 from a farmer?

FUCKING MORONS.

Ok, fucker. How do you fucking know that everyone has access to a farm? I know I fucking don't! There isn't a farm within a fucking 40 mile radius of here. So, for some people, buying hay from Petco is the only option, you dumb shit.

True, but where are you going to store a bale of hay? I buy mine where they sell bales for horses, but they also sell less than a bale, go find a barn that does that.
I buy a bag every month, I'd say 1/4 of a bale for 5 bucks and have a huge box to store it. Also, a small bag of alfalfa for the young one.
At least buy Oxbow hay, the quality is good. All Kaytee products suck. There, do I get banned for advertising stuff?

I would think that saving $190 on fucking HAY is more important than worrying about where to store an object that is like 36"x18"x18" in size.

Hay isn't even a big deal for those animals. A small bag every once in a while will suffice.

FUCKING STEAL THE SMALLER BAGS YOU DUMB SHIT!

I used to store bales of hay in a garage that I shared with a neighbor... She was allergic and managed to put all the other tenants against me. How about that?

Same thing goes for filter shit for Fish tanks. You can buy a small bag of fluffy cotton stuff to use for an extra fine filter in your tank, and its like $10 here. Go to the arts and craft store and buy a GIANT bag like 5 times as large for $5.

Same for sponges. Filter spongers at pet stores are like fucking $20 for two, 30cm sponges. Go to the fucking hardware store and buy a really large spoge, or an entire fucking 30"x30" sheet of sponge material, and cut it to whatever size you want.

See, THAT makes sense whereas driving out to a farm (which, like I said, could be two or three counties over depending on where you live) to buy a WHOLE bale of hay for a pet that is NOT a horse or cow, etc. does NOT make sense.
>> tigerfeather !CrwtTbFNxQ
Wait, OP, I'm sorry.....do you buy all of your food at Costco? Every bit of it? Even the little things, like rice or maybe chips? If you're going to criticize everyone buying hay for their guinea pig at Petco (what does that cost, like $10 a month?), then you should be criticizing yourself for not buying every damn thing at the lowest possible price per ounce.

How many of your own groceries do you actually buy, OP? Do you still live at home? Just because something is bigger and cheaper does not make it better.

i used to buy the big bales when i had 4 guinea pigs and a large rabbit; but keeping them in a garage is hard for two reasons,

1. not many people even have space for one hay bale

2. mice and rats fucking love them, its just asking for a rodent problem

I'm done with this thread. Fuck you ALLLLLLLLL!

I'm rich. I can afford the luxury of buying small packages of hay in neat packages for my pet.

I live in a tiny apartment. A bale of hay would take up half of my living room (not to mention the mess).
>> Anonymous
Also, on the whole, even hay aimed at horses is a larger and rougher cut than the little bales of timothy stuff they sell in the pet shops. Not so good for guinea pigs etc.

Sorry douche, I live in an apartment with my son and fiance. Nice try though.

Srsly though, I guess if you people have $200 to blow on fucking animals, have at it. Maybe I'll go work raise up a field of hay and $$PROFIT$$ the fuck out of it by selling to idiots.

Yeah, you go do that.
Then us rich folk will have more variety in the little bags of hay that we buy.
We will have our nice hay, and you get to scrape a meager living for your impoverished 'family' by selling bales of hay until they decide to leave you. It's win win!

Hay is food. Straw is bedding. You guys are looking for straw.
Check craigslist, sometimes people give it away.

Unlike you fortunate souls, I live in Southeast Asia, there's not a place that sells hay within any sort of reasonable driving distance.

I make due with picking the local grass that grows every fucking where, so far my pets which have been eating it for six months or so haven't died, so it seems to be safe and I get it for free.
