I need help, /an/. I just got a little hampster, and I was going to put her with my Gerbil, but the Gerbil hates her, I have no other cages, what could I put her in..? D:

Also try the vanilla extract introduction.

If they seem to sniff each other then break into fight, get the cage thoroughly cleaned and sanitized out, take a cotton swab and lightly rub them with diluted (real, not imitation) vanilla extract on their noses and backs to mask the smell and confuse each other. Mix the scent in around the rest of the cage. This has been posted on many websites and forums as effective.

Also google introduce hamster, introduce gerbil.

Hamsters are solitary animals. They do not do well with other animals, or even other hamsters. the only exception is if you have littermates. I would NOT keep them together. You can try all kinds of fancy tricks but in the end they will just end up stressed out an unhealthy best case. Worse case, they will injure each other.

Keep the hamster seperate until you can get a new cage. Surely you can find something to keep it in. An old cooler or a large cooking pot could work for a temporary cage.

Hamsters are very social! You can keep several together fine.

Hamsters hate each other. They EAT each other. That was an educational trip to to the pet store for me!

They are entirely different species and do not mix together. Get rid of them. You obviously have no idea what the fuck you are doing.

Yeah, you can't keep hamsters together unless they are litter mates that spent their whole lives together.

Hamsters HATE other hamsters, and if you just throw some together, they WILL try to kill each other.

OP here... I won't put them together, but anyone have any ideas of where I can keep her untill I get her a cage...?

Seconding this... cover the bottom with an old blanket if you have no bedding, prop up a water bottle for her, till you can get a cage?

If you have those big plastic storage bins, you can keep her in there. And you're retarded for thinking you could keep two different rodent species together, seriously, I want to kill you.

No, Syrian hamsters are NOT social. Only dwarves can live in groups, and that's only if they grow up together as littermates. And despite what other people in this thread have said, even littermate Syrian hamsters can turn on each other when they hit sexual maturity and become agressive. There is NO WAY to keep Syrian hamsters together safely.

(In before... "BUT I HAD TWO AND THEY WERE FINE" exceptions to the rule)

i had a hampster but i taped it to a wall and gave it away to some nigger with a snake

Try an empty garbage can. Put some bedding in it and tape a water bottle to the side. I've done this before and it works quite well.

You don't need to put it anywhere.

use the biggest thing you can find with smooth edges on the inside. any ridges or seams that protrude enough will give the hamster an edge to start gnawing a hole and then you'll be writing to us about how to get a dead hamster out of your wall.

Fucking retard, why would you try and keep a gerbil and a hamster (note the lack of "p" - it's not a "hampster") in the same cage? They're both rodents, but not remotely the same species. If you keep them together, they will kill each other, as you would have found out if you're done 0.2 seconds of research into this at all. Think before you get a pet next time.

Also note OP bought the hamster without even getting a cage of its own and instead of going to the god damned pet store to get another, they go on 4chan for help

I used to keep my mouse in one of these. He loved it, actually.

Seconding, thirding, fourthing the 'hamsters aren't social' comments. I've seen hamsters fight to the death after accidentally being put in the same cage. Not the kind of mistake you want to be making.
