Pet Recommendation? Anonymous
I want a pet that's easy to handle, not a fish, cheap, small, and easy to take care of. Oh and no rodents. My roommate says she'll kill me if I get a rat or hamster.

I'm trying to decide between turtles and hermit crabs, but recommendations are welcome. :)

do they need a heater of some sort?

Turtles aren't so easy to take care of.

I would not recommend turtles if you're looking for something "cheap, small, and easy to take care of."

Your average water turtle (red eared sliders are probably the most common, no?) is going to get like ten inches in length. This means a large tank, one fit to hold water, with appropriate heating and filtration because an aquatic turtle will dirty a tank FAST and it smells like cat piss. They need very specific lighting (heat and UV) which isn't cheap - these are vital to their shell health, activity levels, etc. Then there's also their diet - strictly turtle pellets or just feeder fish aren't good for them, they need a variety. Not to mention they're strong and can easily push filters/heaters out of the water and damage them, move rocks and get themselves in trouble, etc.

Tortoises are a little easier to take care of but are usually expensive, think around $100-ish for one that isn't going to get very large. They still have a pretty demanding diet, however, fresh vegetables and fruits, some need animal proteins in some form, and so on.

I'd say you're probably better off with a hermit crab. Also, your roommate is a moron. And a pussy.

snakes
might be a little more than cheap to set up, but you only have to feed them rarely. they don't crap much either.

I have two geckos AND I AM SO FUCKING TIRED OF HEARING THAT

I digress, though. It depends on what kind of gecko you purchase. A Leopard gecko, a good choice for beginners, really only needs an under the tank heater sized for a ten or twenty gallon aquarium.

fiddler crabs. They need next to nothing. They run around and wave at you. Its awesome to hold them, and they barely eat at all so the shrimp pellets last eternity.

turtles are a pain in the ass to take care of..

I suggest firebelly toads or an emperor scorpion

Don't get hermit crabs, a pet that goes into hiding as soon as you come near it isn't that fun

Walking sticks and/or other insects.

What about those tiny turtles that the Chinese guy at Chinatown sells? Are they tough to take care of?

They're delicious but you usually need about six of them for a meal.

The tiny turtles you refer to are probably sliders.. just babies. I believe there's still a law against selling them that small in the states, though nobody pays it any mind. Regardless.. they're just babies.. and will require all the care I mentioned in my post. Putting them in the tiny dish with the little island really isn't acceptable. Kept under those conditions they may not grow, but that's only because you're stunting their growth by refusing to give them proper care.
