Do NOT put the fish in water and then place them in the freezer. They will freeze to death slowly. Ask anyone with frostbite how it feels to feel your body dying slowly in the cold. However, you CAN kill a fish quick and fairly painlessly by temperature change. Place a bowl of water in the freezer, check on it in an hour or so and when it starts to form ice on the top, then drop the fish in. The sudden temp change will kill them quick and easy like (Imagine jumping into a swimming pool in the middle of the winter. It knocks the breath out of you and immediately your body starts to fade. HUMANS can die in a matter of moments from being submerged in freezing water. Fish are much smaller and more delicate.)
Another way to do it would be drowning them in alcohol. As pure as you can get. Just say goodbye and drop them in and they will pass out, suffocate, and die pretty quick. Course, you'll be wasting good booze, so I wouldn't recommend this. Unless like.. You want to give them a viking funeral after..
