If you don't watch 'em, a ferret would not last more than a week. The reason why they are banned in Cali is also partly because of disease. Any one remember the Marshal/Bandits problem. Killed thousands because of what was in the food.
As for the new owner, I suggest keepin the male and female in different cages eventually. Mine were constantly fighting and drawing blood. But, saddly, now that the male died, the girl just mopes around. When we let her out, she bites, chews, claws on everything. This didn't happen with our first batch of Ferrets, because we gave them alone time when they got too wirey.
