Best dog breed?

I think so. I had my Pure Bred German Shepherd for 14 years. I had to put him down last August (he had severe hip dysplasia).

I have wonderful memories of him and his vibrant personality.

Anyone else have a German Shepherd or stories involving German Shepherds?

This is my late dog on his bed.

I want a german shepherd.

I want a dog that can be very loyal, a decent sized, can be mean and overtly obedient, so that I could trust it to protect my home, act as an alarm (like my current mut does), and so that I can take it wherever I need it and not worry about it attacking other people or dogs unless I tell it so.

I think a german shepherd can do it, but it would take much more training than I know how to give.

When I was growing up, I had a 1/2 german shepard 1/2 doberman. She was like my second mom, I seriously loved that dog. She died when I was 9.

i had a german shepherd when i was younger...

They're wonderful dogs, but I worry about how the breed is being handled by the AKC and the like. The amount of hip dysplasia in the breed is enough to keep me from wanting a purebred one. I knew someone whose 4 year old GSD got hip dysplasia. Fucking tragic. I'd happily adopt a mixed one, though. Shiloh shepherds are apparently an "improvement" on GSDs hip-wise, too, except they're absolute behemoths.

there is no breed as ruined by the hand of man as the noble german shepherd. you want a good one? get a spoiled breed, or find the most bitchin' bloodline of performance-line shepherds ever. If their hips don't blow up, however, I'd say they're about damn perfect on the psychological side. Lots of trained dogs in my family, and the top 3 are all german shepherds. Number one didn't even have a hip problem. We called him Hex, and Hex was a very special dog to all 3 generations of us.

QFT

GSDs bred from a working dog lineage (read: schutzhund) usually have far fewer health problems than show dogs or dogs from backyard breeders. And their personalities/temperments are by far the best and most stable of any dogs. I'd trust a schutzhund-trained GSD with my life.

This is a better working dog.

But german shepherds still make great pets.

My very first dog was a pure breed german shepard. He looked like a fat Bear cub when he just a puppy so thats what I decided to name him. Such a loyal and loving creature. It's amazing how just growing up with an animal to care for teaches you so much about life and the world. Around 2 yrs old he got into a fight with a local dog and came back bloody and broken, when the vets said he would die because he contracted polio. Not Bear though, he fought through and won and lived a wonderful life with my family and I. Sadly one day our neighbors american pitbull got loose, he was a poor tortured dog, breed to be aggressive and kill hungry. They were illegal to own on the island due to the fact they're only purpose there was for underground fighting and protection for the rich. The pit came at me while I was walking Bear and they engaged in a deathlock of their jaws. Bear won but two days later. Who knows what would have happened to me if he wasn't there to protect me.

Anyway thats my story of my shepard. I've never told it really and it felt nice. ^_^

haha! I'm biased toward GSDs but Malinoises (not sure that the proper pluralization...) are definitely in my top 5 dog breeds -- they're pretty amazing. But, honestly, any working dog has my respect.

Same here too actually, I just always feel the need to insert a malinois in GSD threads because there are never malinois threads. :(

While not quite as drastic, when I was younger we went sledding one winter, taking our shepherd with us. As I was just starting to sled down the hill someone else's lab started chasing me. Our dog saw this, and she ran at him and chased him away. Again nothing big, but still.

The AKC bred German Shepherds to mutants shit dogs that couldn't work to save their life. Get one from EU if you want a real German Shepherd.

Can you be more precise? In Australia, I see mostly very large and sturdy German Shepherds as police dogs. It's the dogs with the sloped backs (because some foolish people think it looks better) that become less able to work, not the really big ones, right?

It's hard to license hybrids that are less than 50 generations away from wolf ancestry, though. Shilohs can be beautiful, but you have to be aware of the hybrid problem.

I'm German and never heard of that, or was that a special joke? :p
Also, It's funny how GSD and Husky threads attract the furries. I like this thread also.

Shiloh shepherds have wolf in them? What? I was researching the breed a while ago and don't remember coming across anything about that. Where did you hear that?

dutch shepherds are pretty awesome too.. and shilohs have no wolf in them at all(they do however have malamute in them according to www.shilohshepherd.org). perhaps this poster was thinking of the saarloos wolfhound, which is another new breed created by crossing german shepherds with european wolves.
of course if I was going to buy into one of these new breeds(aka mutts) I would get a king shepherd...but that's not likely as a pure german shepherd would be easier to get!

I have three dogs, my eldest is a purebred GSD and my other two are GSD mixes of some sort. My Caesar (attatched pic) is 6 and a half and he has hip displasia pretty bad, but not as bad as my 3 year old dog, Miller. :(

The best thing about these dogs is their intuition. They KNOW when there's a problem and when to protect people, which people are shady, how to handle situations, without any training in my experience. My dogs are all excellent guard dogs but also fantastic companians.

My little brother has autism, so a lot of his friends are all special-needs kids (autism, down syndrome, things like that) and my dogs play so gently with these kids. One of them that comes over a lot is extremely shy, 15 years old, and barely ever talks because he has a really bad speech impediment. The teachers at his school are trying to encourage him but it's really hard. When he comes over, however, he'll run around with the dogs shrieking and yelling and singing and having a great time overall.

Eh, they're not mutts as much as schnoodlejugwankers since at least they have a breed standard besides "cross breed A with breed B." Plus they have a purpose besides being fashionable.

I've found that German Shepherds are my favorite breed so far. I have two, the youngest (pictured) is the first dog I've ever fallen in love with. The only problem I've personally noted with the breed is that they tend to be aloof. My male has a strict "work mode" and "play mode". Most people, I believe, really like this, though I'm a cuddler and he doesn't care for it. When he's on the job, there's no bothering him. If it weren't for Janie, I'd have to get a different breed. She's a cuddler =)

I had a German Sheppard that was put down when I was eight. :(

He was trained in Germany as an attack dog. I think he was in the army or something for a while. He never seemed to get used to being a family pet, he was always totally calm and ready for orders.

I have 2 purebreed German Shepard puppies too. They're from the same litter but both completely opposite. 8weeks old and the size of a 'medium' dog.
