As I type this an epic battle is being fought.

Today a fly buzzed by me in my apartment, moments later he had been severed in half and I placed the fly in with my young ant colony. The poor guy, half alive, stumbled about the tub as a lone ant approached.

The rest of the colony lay dormant withing the confines of the tube. The brave ant soon discovered the fly and a tug of war begun, with the severed fly putting up quite a fight.

The fly has shaken off the ant sever times now but he keeps coming back as they amble about the enclosure. It would be wise for the ant to rally some of her comrades but she continues alone.
Looking now, the fly seems to have found a moment alone and the other ants are moving about the tube...perhaps wondering where their comrade has gone? Will they send out a search party?

Updates as they develop.

Well I managed to get a few seconds of video of the ant climbing on top of the fly and the fly running around the enclosure. If I didnt know that the ant was in fact eating the still living fly, I would have found it cute. Instead it was mearly funny.

The ant got knocked off and returned to the tube and raised the other ants from their stupor. Alot of activity within the tube and a few minutes later two ants went to the opening but only one has resumed the search for the fly whom is still alive.

She has found the fly and the bareback rodeo continues. but the fly is weakening. So far the other ants havent come to help their comrade; no wonder so many ants die.

ok wow...it appears that this ant has given up taking the whole fly back while its still alive...instead.....

its going to the fly, reaching inside and eating as much as it can as the fly tries to get away. She then head back to her mates and feeds them before setting back out....

nature is cruel....

>>nature is awesome....

Also what is more awesome is imagining them doing it to you, if they ever escaped their tube and became enormous.

yea....I hope that by standing over them everyday and giving them food that they will learn to worship me,and shall they ever escape, that they would obey my commands and fetch my dinner for me.

any....back to task. the fly is finally in the tube with the ants but only the one ant is still at it. ITs dragging it down the tube for the others.

AND ITS STILL ALIVE!!!...just barely, its mouth moves every few seconds.

the ant, after dragging it inside. Left it and went back to foraging. the other ants don't seem to know its inside yet.

How the fuck did you break a fly in half?
You should make a regular feature of feeding wounded fauna to your ant colony. You seem to have a gift for writing and it harks back to the glory days of Bug Fights.

mostly luck and quick reflexes, he came close and before he knew it he was laying on the ground in pieces.

They've pretty much finished eating him by now, and I'm expecting them to discard the leftovers soon.

could the ammount of light be stressing them out? it hasnt been a problem before this as the queen laid numerous eggs. They were just recently given more space to explore which should prompt the production of eggs. Temp shouldnt be an issue since they sit close to a heat source(but not too close)

I really want more ants

CRAP /an/, one of my ants has died. I presume its old age...but I don't have any new ones to replace it.... I'm wondering if its humidity. They recently ran out of water and Idk how to give them more without dumping them all out of the tube and stressing theheck outta them.

shesh where are the /an/ guys who were all over this board a few months ago. I could really use some help. I just attempted to add a few drops of water to the tube. Which caused the ants to freak out and abandon the tube. They took refuge under the paper towel which is a darker location then they previously had and is easier for me to increase humidity to.
