dear /an/

My mom got me a bumblebee goby as a gift around 2 or 3 months ago. Everything was fine but today when i went to check up on him he was floating upside down. Naturally i thought he was dead so i got my net. When i picked him up out of the water he started flailing like he usually did. I put him back in and he started swimming upside down. he even rests on the bottom of the tank upside down as well. Whats wrong with him?

Swim bladder problem, it sounds like. Also, is he in brackish water?

I checked up on wikipedia what brackish water was since i didnt know it at first and this came up

Technically, brackish water contains between 0.5 and 30 grams of salt per litre—more often expressed as 0.5 to 30 parts per thousand (ppt or ‰). Thus, brackish covers a range of salinity regimes and is not considered a precisely defined condition. It is characteristic of many brackish surface waters that their salinity can vary considerably over space and/or time.

So i followed the measurements and used sea salt and crushed it and disolved it in the water. i dont know if its worked or not though =/

You mean you did it just now? ....yknow, you probably just finalized your fish's fate, if you added all that salt at once.

no i didnt do it just now. I had the salt in for a long time. When i said the first week that was about 2 months ago.

Ah, okay. Anyway, when fish can't keep upright, it's usually a sign of a swim bladder dysfunction.

In the past, all my goldfish died within 2 weeks of losing their ability to float upright.

I have a betta with a similar problem. So its his swim bladder? He kinda floats on the top of his tank, trying to balance himself out. Anyway to help the little guy?

Ahh, that happened to my poor little goldfish.

But that little shark's still alive!

I fed it peas, some lettuce, put in some of that salt from the pet store (Big Al's) and eventually it went back to normal. Poor thing.

Peas and lettuce? The heck does that do for them?

Any thing for a carnivorous fish that does the same thing?

bumblebee, transform and roll out!

peas and lettuce act as fiber and flush out it's system. some times, constipation is the problem. When things get jammed up inside of them the swim bladder can be pushed out of shape

Ah ok thank you. Is there a carnivore friendly equivalent? I heard brine shrimp are supposed to work but my betta refuses to eat them.

You could always try not feeding him for a while (1 week). Don't worry, if he's healthy, its no big deal to go without food for that long, as bettas can go without food for up to 1 month.
This can help if your betta is simply just overfed, it will clear any obstructions that may be blocking or pushing up against his swim bladder.

I suggest going to fishprofiles.com and asking their forum there, they are really helpful.

Not sure about bettas, but I've seen some (obsessive) people tie 2" strings to their orandas with pingpong balls at the other end of the strings to help them float.

my friend's cousin had some fish that floats upside down in a fish tank and still be alive. I asked her why, and she said some fish enjoy floating upside down, and that nothing is wrong with them.

some fish actually do this. a lot of synodontis catfish do, I'm sure there are others. goldfish and bettas are not among them.
