How do I keep those cats off my porch? Anonymous
Hey /an/. Perhaps you could help me.
During the summer months, this one stray cat gets on my porch (I love on the second floor btw) and starts bawling like a wailing baby, which then leads to a cat fight on my porch with the downstairs cat (not sure why things always progresss this way, but they do).

Anyway, long drama made short, how do I keep cats off my porch? It seems like the cats are climbing up the wooden beams connected to my downstairs neighbor to get on my porch, and I'm renting the place so lining the ouside with plexiglass is out of the question. I thought about surrounding the place with barbed wire or something, but that seems a bit extreme pus I don't want irresponsible cat owners giving me grief because their cat got hurt on my porch (sigh america. You can sue for anything).

Is there some sort of oder or sound which won't bother me but will drive the cats away? I know high pitched mosquito repelents will sometimes bother a pet, but I don't know how effective they are against cats. Dunno if there's some mighty stinky flower or weed I could grow to repel them either.

I just don't want any cats on my porch. Heeelp

Constatly invade the porch. Do it every time you see the cat. Do it fast and hard. After a while, it will recognize that place as hostile territory and will not return.

I had cats who liked to sleep in my backyard. Granted, I liked seeing them there but they got scared off everytime I went out. Now, I don't even see them anymore.

Cover the beams in grease. Also cat's don't like the smell of cirtus fruits so putting down orange peel, lemon peel etc. should keep them away.

Best bit of advice, yet! And it works with human females, too.

1 Buy a supersoaker, the kind with a removable nozzle at the tip
2 take off the nozzle so it shoots all the water at once
3 shoot the cat with the squirt gun

A good solid blast of water injures the dignity of the cat, but nothing else.

Wrap aluminum foil on the beams, they won't climb up it.

have you tried growing catnip?

Cats hate citrus, so lemon juice or orange juice might work.

most lethal and effective way to keep cats off of the porch - put some anti freeze in milk and leave it out. probably not recomended in your situation.

i used to have a real problem with stray cats mating and fighting on my porch...

That doesn't work.

The show, Braniacs, disproves the aluminum foil myth. They placed foil around the whole floor and had cats walk all over it.

That's illegal in all civilized countries.
