Your cat kind of has to be smart enough in the first place.
Much like dogs, a lot of cats, especially the pedigrees, are so inbred that they've lost a lot of their streetsmarts, and are more accessories and companions than independant creatures that just happen to own you. Like cats ought to.
Anyway, my cat's a smart cookie, so I can verify that a cat need not be A Dog, he just has to be SMRT in order to know his name and when to come in. I let my cat out during the day, and I call him in at night. I sometimes have to go out down the street to find him, and he may grumble when I carry him back inside, but he always comes when he's called.
You can't really train it into a cat; it's all about how intelligent he is in the first place and how strong is the bond between you two.
