Perfect, I was needing a thread like this. What I'm looking for is this deep sea creature (not mythological) that is estimated at 300 yards long. Largest animal known to man. However, its simply made up of thousands (hundreds?) of smaller, but identical animals. They're these triangle shaped things, so they form to make something that resembles a giant spine. I saw this in the last seconds of some Discovery Channel thing, because they only had a small clip of it and as far as I can tell the only one. Any help in identifying what the hell this thing is would be very helpful.

Weird fact about some angler fishes: The males are born without digestive tracts. Their entire purpose in life is to deliver sperm to the female. When a male finds a female, the male bites into her flesh, and digestive enzymes break down the mouth and the skin of the female. Eventually, the two are intertwined at the blood vessel level. All other organs except for the gonads atrophy to practically nothing.

How long can they live without a female? As soon as they are born, to they have to seek one out quickly?
I can't imagine how long they can survive without food.

those are called 'salps' and can reach enormous lengths - trouble is theyre fragile tubes and when they float to the surface they get torn up quickly by turbulence - ive seen some amazing pics of them though
