Hey /an/ - I'm planning on getting a snake. I know not much about different breeds, or snake care, so I'm coming here.

What sort of enclosure will I need? I have space to build something about six foot by four foot at the most, but it can't be as tall as I want. I'm handy with wood so I'm building it myself, so any design ideas are welcome.

Also, what type of snake would you recommend? I'd like something a bit colourful, but nothing that grows too big - it's my first snake.

And I heard they need to be kept at certain temperatures - how do I go about this, and how much will it cost?

Pic not really related.

Well, you should take him out to dinner first, make sure you pay for it, and don't use those stupid pickup lines. Or you could just ask if he looks that hot naked, that usually works for me.

OP: I hear aquariums are good for snakes, though I'm certain I've seen them in screen enclosures. I guess it depends on the snake. A heat lamp is usually recommended. Perhaps Google "pet snake" or the like?

get a ball python. not very colorful though.
good starter snakes. they get about 5ft or a little more. males tend to be smaller.
i have two ATM, almost two feet but i haven't measured them in a while.

king snakes are colorful and lots of people own them, but i know nothing about their temperament and how good they are.
corn snakes come in many different colors but i wouldn't get one due to the fact that they never sit still and are very skiddish. at least my ball python will get hang onto me and chill out.

as for feeding, i suggest you not feed them live prey. get pre-killed mice. everyone who says "but its more natural" can go fuck themselves.

as for the rest just google 'snake enclosure', 'snake care', etc.

sure why not.

also the guy i got my snakes from(the petstore lol) said that i should feed them in a place besides their tank.. so i take them out, put them in a box, give them their food, wait till they swallow and put them back.

the snake dude said that way they won't think my hand is food or something.
i don't think its necessary at all or matters.

sometimes snakes associate the opening of the cage with the arrival of food. So the snake sees a warm hand entering and reacts like it is food. It is a good practice, because you will probably be bitching when it bites you...
