I've spent the day walking, just looking at people as I passed them by on the street. I saw how each person was wrapped up in their own self-absorbed little world, not caring about those around them, not thinking about anything. I saw how they each have hopes and dreams, they each have desires and hidden fantasies. They all keep something to themselves, they each hide what they truly want, because it's all they have, really. I saw that there are some people who look dead, though. These are the people with no hopes anymore, these are the people who's wishes have died, and who's dreams have crumbled to nothing. That is what happens, though, this is the state of the world. The tragic truth is that nobody will ever attain what they want. The reason people never share their deepest dreams is because they know, they all know, that they can't ever have what they want. People who seem happy? They're just people who have convinced themselves that they have what they want. They're just lying to themselves, though. They're doing only what the rest of all of us do, they're going through their days, one day at a time, trying to make the best, telling themselves every 10 minutes how it could be worse...but it couldn't be worse. How can it be worse than knowing without a doubt that your life is going nowhere? How can it be worse than feeling like you are trapped, that there's no escape from the cycle of regret and despair that you've been in ever since you left your girlfriend? These people are everywhere, man. They're all around us, we can't escape them. You know why we can't escape them? Because we're both just fucking like them, man. Now pour me a whiskey.
