Our dog is very friendly, excpet when it comes to his toys and trying to take ahold of him around the neck area (this has abated somewhat in the year that we've had him), and he can become aggresive. We got him from a shelter because his old owners were moving to a flat and could not take him, and we were told he has already bitten once.

We're gonna take him to some classes we have booked in about 2 months, but in the mean time what would you seasoned dog owners suggest?

Don't give him toys.

Beat him until he loves you.

Because if so, maybe you shouldn't... oh, I dunno... put him in a cage where he can hardly turn around.

How large/strong is the dog? Do you think he could seriously hurt you? If not, all I can tell you is to not let him scare you. If you let him keep his toy when he snaps/snarls at you, he's getting exactly what he wants, and will only continue aggressive displays. A professional will be able to tell you more about establishing your role as "boss" (really, don't listen to anyone but a pro on that, you can really mess a dog up if you listen to the wrong people) so he doesn't think he can get his way. If you let an animal push you around, it will.

Oh, also, DON'T yell/hit him when he does this. If you hurt him, it's just going to reaffirm to him that you're not to be trusted and he should hide his stuff from you. You need to stay calm. Lashing out back at him won't help any more than letting him control you. Good luck.

We got a dog in a similar situation. He was a small-medium sized dog, but he managed to kill our smallest dog and attacked my mother, even after intensive therapy.

He had to be put down.

Keep that fucker away from smaller animals, don't approach him alone, etc. He's dangerous, and until you try and resolve those problems, he's a loaded gun so to speak.

Pic related, this is the dog that got killed. ;_;

A resource guarding dog isn't necessarily a dog that's dangerous to other animals. Don't generalize.

I'm sure your right, but in my experience, they sure as hell can be. I mean, other animals, especially dogs, are going to be competing for toys, food, attection, etc, and if the dog can't handle humans (his boss/alpha, so to speak, then its hard to imagine him being any better with something he is competing with with.

And if anything it sounds like he has a very similar problem to the dog we had to have put down.

Of course OP should be cautious, but resource guarding can be because of a true authority issue or because of anxiety (or both, etc etc). One of these is more treatable than the other. I just thought that made the situation sound rather hopeless for OP. I didn't want OP to be like "oh shit, dog's gonna eat me" and not bother trying. Y'know.

Are you a bad enough dude to punch a dog in the fucking face?

lol
We got a problem dog like this, he's my roomate's dog but she sucks at discipline so i'm the only one he respects. I met him when he was a year and a half old and the first time he bit me i collared him and threw him on his back and yelled in his face. Putting a dog on it's back is letting them know you're alpha and they need to give you their toys. Hitting a dog rarely works - see>>186296
although you should still yell.

Yeah your right. Sorry OP. I guess I let my emotions get the better of me :3.

actually physically forcing a dog on it's back is rarely a good idea and definitely not something the OP should do without a lot of dog handling experience. 'Alpha Rolling' is a very controversial and can in some cases make problems worse.

Agreed. My brother-in-law made his dog in to a psychotic, paranoid face-eating monster that way (he had to put it down). Please refer to my warning>>186294on not trusting anyone but a professional on how to establish your "role" above a potentially aggressive dog. Too harsh of methods can make them worse and are easily just as damaging/more damaging than letting it do as it pleases. And yeah, "alpha rolls" count as a harsh method. It's basically a dog death threat.

No pic isn't related, I just got it off Google.

Geez I would shit myself to death if I ever came across a dog like that.
