I've observed two cats that prowl my backyard daily. One of them is completely black and the other is a striped brown/tan mix. They don't come together. Neither has a collar.

My mother isn't too happy about them roaming the backyard and walking all over her plants. Is there some way to deter the cats from coming? I assume that it'd be less effort than attempting to trap them.

Spray with water bottle, or a hose. Marigold plant might also work.

I've seen/heard that putting bottles of water in the garden keeps cats away.
Apparently the reflection or something about them makes them think twice about entering...

I used a high pressure hose to deter my neighbour's cat. Worked like a charm. Wish I could have used a gun, though, but I'm in the city.

As much as I like cats, I understand why some people with gardens might not like having cats digging around in them. The remedies I've always heard of are things like slicing oranges reasonably thinly and placing them all over the garden. There are also commercial products out there.

Other than that, you can always go running out screaming like a banshee and make your neighbours think you're crazy. :D

you can buy predator piss for that, like wolf or coyote, some sorta animal like that

tell your mother the cats may be walking through her garden but they are also keeping kritters away from her plants ie rodents-mice, rabbit and other small furry vegetarians (im assuming you are talking about a vegetable garden-duh if your not your moms a bitch)

they're also chewing on plants and leaving cat shit in her garden which may or may not harm the plants

There's several ways to get rid of a cat, but I'm guessing that OP wants something humane and non-abusive.

Try a hose, and yelling at the cats. Do it every time you see the little shits. Its the only way you can deter cat activity and not possibly harm the animals.

Throw a brick at them when they're not looking.

Tossing a boot is probably the most time-tested method.

Barbed wire. Stable it down on the top edge of all fences on your perimeter.

You'd need permission from neighbours, but if it's their cat and you turn up talking about prison fencing, they might do something about their felines without you having to lift a finger.

Use orange peel around the border of your garden. Cats hate strong scents like this.

Water. Projectile water of any kind will send cats running. You should invest in a sprinkler.

Why do people tend to dislike cats so much? I mean there are plenty of other animals that will dig around in your garden that you don't even know about. Rabbits and Squirrels for instance.

In any case, generally speaking the only plants a cat will chew on is Giraffe weed, which is a WEED, not a flower.

Lots of people have suggested using oranges to deter them.
While most pets (dogs and cats alike) can't stand the smell or whatever, I know my first cat couldn't, for whatever reason my second cat didn't mind at all. Maybe her nose wasn't so great or something.
So yeah, try that. Might not work, though.

orange peel, or apparently pissing all around the borders of your garden helps alot, also leaving bits of your own hair and nails around in the flowerbeds stops them from messing stuff up. i dunno, its something to do with your scent and they leave it alone.

>the only plants a cat will chew on is Giraffe weed

Not true, living in a city myself, i have to put up with stray cats constantly chewing on my mint grass, pansies, and various other flowers that i don't know the names of.
And as to why people detest cats so much its pretty simple, they shit in your flower beds, try to cover it up but end up spreading dirt everywhere, and have noisy, ugly-sounding fights at night. Not to mention the half-maimed frogs, hedgehogs and birds i find lying around occasionally.
