However, a ferret's a buttload bigger than four mice, and proportionately stronger, I'm not sure you want to have to deal with that scrabbling noise of it trying to get out. Personally, that'd break my heart. Luckily, we have a chest freezer in our basement, and get the mice in small cardboard boxes.
I would say release it in the wild, it may die painfully, but YOU don't have to deal with it, and it has a whack at survival. Guiltless.
