i work at a pet store, and yesterday a lady came in with her chihuahua.
it had to have been one of the sweetest, cutest dogs ever. i want to know, /an/, what are they like typically like? i know they can be yappy, but anything else that's notable about the breed?

pic related, it's a chihuahua.

They're little inbred cunts. Shoot on site.

They're ugly and they never stop barking.

We had a little fat one growing up, not one of those teacup shits. He never yapped, and was very affectionate and energetic.

But, he had horrible teeth. I remember our vet telling us that small breed dogs are prone to dental problems, so, be mindful of that.

Accurate.

But you can't really count it as barking. It sounds more like a cat or a tropical bird. Seriously. (No offense to either of these animals.)

Also they're either timid as fuck ALL the time, or they think they're HUEG and can be as aggressive as they want; the result is usually them getting kicked in the face after they've ripped someone's pantleg.

That being said, you CAN train them to be respectable dogs, but you;d be hard pressed to find someone who owns one of these cunts that isn't an overweight woman who babies the fuck out of it and lets it do whatever the fuck it wants.

OP here. personally i haet when people baby their dogs. dogs aren't people so they shouldn't be treated like people.
my boyfriend's neighbor studs out her chihuahua, and he's really well trained. he barely barks, and he's really friendly and not timid at all. he thinks he's king kong sometimes, but his owner kicks him out of that mindset pretty fast; she doesn't put up with any bullshit. good dog owners ftw :3

Most people don't properly socialize their chihuahuas so they turn into yappy jerks.

The poster above speaks the truth. Chihuahuas are dogs, pure and simple, and if you treat them like good dogs, they act like good dogs. That means training and socializing them the same way you would a large breed.

If you treat them like toys, spoil them and let them get away with everything, they end up really nasty.

I met someone once with an impeccably trained obedience Chihuahua-- had the most beautiful, rock solid down-stay-- and she was a delightful little dog, playful and friendly and absolutely reliable.

A dog of any size is what you make it.

I have a chihuahua. He's my first dog ever, and as a person with no prior experience with dogs I have to say I absolutely LOVE my dog. I have had him for awhile now, but I was nervous about their negative stereotype being true. He has turned out to be the greatest thing that's ever happened to me (second to my s/o). I did a ton of research on the breed before hand though. Go to breeder websites or the AKC website and read everything you can find on chi's.

Make sure you train them well and practice every day. They have an attitude and mind or their own. My dog lives by NILIF (nothing in life is free). He wants something he has to perform a command (ie. sit, down, speak). They are fiercely loyal and an excellent guard dog. They do bark but you can limit it with training but it will never completely stop.

Taking them around other dogs can be scary if the dog is big and excitable, but you have to resist the urge to pick up your chi and baby them. If you spoil them you will have a demon on your hands. They will outsmart you easily. Mine is a total comedian and a clown. He never fails to crack me up. They are really wonderful, clever, very loving, funny little dogs. If can you stick to training, treat them like dogs (not babies), and can deal with some yappiness I would definitely recommend the breed.

Pic is my chi. (He's a long haired chi.) <3
