Hello /an/ this is Pirate...I had to put him to sleep today. He had FIP which is feline infectious peritonitis....he had a dense fluid in his lungs and had trouble breathing....I'm gonna miss him a lot.

I got him from Petsmart which has an animal shelter for adoptions. My question is this, should I try to get another cat from a shelter or check classified ads? This disease is most common among cats that are kept together in shelters and it's contracted by ingesting the virus as well as through feces.
I'm kind of gunshy about going to Petsmart again....

Well the reason I trusted them a bit more was because the cats were just cycled in from the Humane Society in our area....there's one at the mall that makes my skin crawl, I can't imagine what it's like for those cats there...d'you think I ought to let the pet store know about the FIP?

You fail at reading comprehension. OP said that animals from Petsmart come from a shelter, which is true. Petsmarts all over have deals with local shelters, so they kind of "showcase" animals from that particular shelter. In fact, when you adopt one of those animals, you have to go through the shelter, not petsmart (they usually have somebody from the shelter on hand at petsmart just for this purpose). Petsmart does not sell dogs or cats.

It is true, however, that most (if not all) puppies and kittens and other small cute things at traditional pet stores are from puppy mills, and should be avoided at all costs. Poor things.

OP: I say go with another shelter, maybe a different one than you adopted through last time. Like someone else said, at least they have some minimal standards, and they usually do a routine vet check (and perhaps spay/neuter) for you; using the classifieds is more of a gamble. Plus, saving an innocent life, etc. I like petfinder.com, which will search animal shelters in your area for whatever breed you want. Sorry about Pirate. :(

I found my kitty living under a car. The best way to get a cat is to adopt a stray or save ones life at the local humane society.

I just bought two cats at a Petsmart. They were initially left in a garbage bag in a drop bin at the Good Will, where someone found them. Horrible. They have a good home now though :P They were spayed/neutered when we got them, had a chip implanted (so if they got lost, we could call a number and they could tell us where they were), plus all their vaccinations and were all around good natured cats.

i have a cat from petsmart and she was in perfect condition...i really wouldn't base the decision off of one animal..however if there is another petsmart near you that maybe gets cats from another shelter, maybe look into that?

PetSmart doesn't have a shelter itself, they just dedicate space in their stores for adoptions. You'll have to find out what team(s) they have in their stores to know which one not to adopt from. Most PetSmarts don't have any trouble with FIP.

Was your cat an indoor/outdoor cat? They can contract it just from exposure to other cats.

A friend of mine lost the sight in one of his eyes to that. Make sure you didn't catch it.
