i just got a nice, new freshwater fish tank and i was looking to see if any of you had suggestions on what type of fish i should get for it.

i can help you on how many you can put in there.
it all depends on how many gallons and when you buy fish, it will tell you the amount they need to be comfortable. and it also is common sense. don't pack it so full you they can't move

Your question hinges almost entirely on how many gallons your tank holds. Looks like you've got a dwarf gourami, four platies, and one molly visible. Stick with community fish. A good rule of thumb is an inch of community fish per gallon.

I would not recommend: Goldfish, cichlids, or plecos, for starters.

Yeah I'd stick with the small stuff, especially since you're just starting out.

Also, here's some good advice for the new aquarium hobbyist. Places like Petsupermarket and Petco will tell you ANYTHING to get you to buy a fish. Before ever getting fish, google them and do your research first. Make sure they'll be comfortable in your tank and also that they won't bully you're other fish.
