My Lhasa Apso was pretty fucking good a killing rats. They're generally showdogs though, so I don't know.

Jack Russels are feisty critters. Do you have a rat problem?

the records are actually held by "fight-dogs". Take a look at a bull-terrier if you want a companion as well, or a pit-bull if you want a killing machine. I think the record is something like 900 rats in one hour in some infested barn! thats a slaughter.

Just trying to think of a decent breed for my Rat Catcher's companion as 'a dog' is too generic for the DM, but a large breed is too out of character. Bull terrier it is!

IRL my cat, a short hair tabby kills mice, rats, cotton tails, squirrels if they are small enough (the black ones get real big in milk bag country), and the occasional shew.

I'm aware that Shrews are beneficial, but I can't tell the shrews to stop trying to kill my cat after he's figured out that it's no mouse!

Miniture foxies/Jack russels/tenterfield terriers are all on the job when you want rats taken care of.

Chihuahuas have a hard time, though. They can still become ankle-biting machines.

Norwich Terriers, they're very fierce and have thick fur and skin.

They're good for the big rats in your basement.

Terriers in general. A lot of them were developed as a breed specifically for that purpose.
