Hey /an/.

I have a young red-eared slider turtle and well, I think i made a booboo.

Yesterday, i was moving some plants in the garden when I noticed some earthworms under a pot I lifted. Since it was a little big, I cut one up and fed a portion to my turtle. He then happily ate it. He seemed quite okay for the rest of the day until today when I noticed he didn't like to swim anymore and just sat on his rock. He doesn't eat any of the usual pellets (Reptomin) that he used to eat. And most worrying of all, I noticed that he kept on extending his neck and opening his mouth, similar to yawning.

Sad thing is, there are no reptile vets in my area. All only treat dogs or cats.

Is it time to say my goodbyes to my turtle, /an/?

Yeah, you killed your turtle.

But why? Was it the worm? or was it just a coincidence?
I've read up on the symptoms he's showing and it seems like a respiratory infection.

Sounds to me like its basking, but what do I know? Take it to a vet and see what they say.

if there was dirt on it or something it could have irritated his throat, and made him act funny, or he could be allergic to something that was in the worm. Give him some time then if it keeps up see what the vet says

Flush it down the toilet before it mutates into a turtleworm.

feeding a worm to your turtle shouldnt have caused any problems.

that said he might have somthing caught in his throat. how long ago did u offer him regular food after feeding him the worm. I wouldnt be too concerned unless he goes a few days without eating or you notice a physical change.

Well, its been two days and the turtle still isn't eating nor swimming. He yawns every few seconds when awake. He does go to sleep though.

I'm a bit worried. But I'd like to be confident that he'll survive this. I mean, turtles in the wild undergo much more worse conditions and eat dirtier food.

Yes but it's not living in the wild, and it's eating dried food from what we now. If this can reassure you mine did the same kind of yawning before it died, so maybe you should take it to the vet.

Could be some viral infection since the turtle most likely can't fend off shit like as if it was raised in the wild.. better ask at http://www.turtleforum.com though =/
