I just moved into a new apartment, but it only allows small pets, so dogs and cats are out. What should I get?

Hmm... where would I get a ferret? They don't seem to have them at the ASPCA or pet stores.

I just checked, ferrets are banned here, so I guess that's a no-go.

I've bred and owned many rodents..

I would reccomend a guinea pig or a chinchilla. Just 1 of each, if you buy more, they will be less social with humans. I've had good results with both. Hamsters are great, but they ultimatley just want to escape, chew, and run.. and are also nocturnal.

Attached is a picture of a chinchilla

I was considering a chinchilla, but I don't know much about them. Any advice?
>> Anonymous
>>158476

Too many chins, but that's a really nice setup.

I've heard chins are messy, and most don't want to be held or petted. They're adorable and fun to watch, though. It really depends on what you are wanting out of a pet.

>>158478
I'm pretty sure that's a time-lapse shoop of one chinchilla.

Guinea pigs sound like a good fit for your situation. They don't smell, are generally good natured, and enjoy cuddling.
>> Anonymous
>>158488
They don't smell bad? That's a definite plus.

hmm... upon some research, I'm not sure I have enough floorspace to devote to a guinea pig. What's a good size for a pen?
>> Anonymous

OP here. I'm leaning towards a dwarf hamster because I have an old 6-gallon aquarium and a space to house it.

What? No body mentioned rats yet?

Rats make awesome pets. They can learn tricks and are just wonderful in general. They will love you even if they are in a group, which you should get at least two so they don't get lonely.

>>158488

they squeek 24/7
>> Anonymous
>>158529
Its not very loud. But it can get annoying.

Hell. I wouldn't even call it a squeak.
>> Anonymous
>>158494

lol that's definitely going overboard. while guinea pigs do enjoy a brisk runaround in your house for a short while, their living space can be roughly the size of a rabbit hutch.

don#t get hamsters, they are boring and not very cuddly.

Hamsters are retarded.
Rats are like owning a small combination of a cat and dog.
Go with the rats.

rats are good pets. typical female rat has two speeds: sleepdrinkeat and ZOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM. male rats i have known start bouncy and then become big fat cuddlers. downside: testicles. overall, though, rats are intelligent, social, quiet, clean, and won't smell unless you let the cage get out of hand. however, they do better in pairs or more.

hamsters are typically best kept solitary (cannibalism is common, especially among larger breeds, even between siblings who have been raised together) and depending on the type you get, or really, on the hamster itself, will either be a totally mellow little beast or a bloodthirsty ball of fur.

guinea pigs are larger, but are very social and affectionate after they get used to you. my mom had one that would squeal when it heard her opening the door when she came home. you could probably find a youtube video and hear the sound for yourself.. it's unique

whatever you get, make sure you get a chance to handle+meet it. most pet stores should let you touch/hold/play with whatever you're looking to buy. observe the reactions of the different animals.

basically, pick whatever you think you'll be most comfortable with and happiest to care for.

pictured is a little more reasonable guinea pig cage - but you'd want to give the pig playtime outside that, around your apartment, closely monitored. maybe curl up and watch tv together.

Find what the weight limit is. My previous appartment said "small animals" but the weight limit was 25lbs so most cats and many breeds of dogs still fit. Barring that, just go to a neighboring state and buy a ferret. If that's to much get a chinchila although the ones I've seen aren't that smart. Sugar glider or a flying squirrel would be nice.
>> Anonymous
Get a packareet.
>> Anonymous
>>158634

Ummmmm... no. A pair of Guinea Pigs need at least 6 square feet of floor space, and the more room the better. They love to run laps and jump, and there is no way you can honestly give them enough 'floor time' to compensate for a small cage. Of course, the large space makes bedding expensive, and they need a constant supply of hay. Mine are not, nor have they ever been clean, though they don't really have a odor. They tend to use the bathroom whenever it suits them, so unless you are willing to spend A LOT of time training them (probably with mixed results), make sure you let them out on a floor that is easy to clean. They can squeal loudly enough to wake the whole house, and once they get going you can't really stop them.

Despite what anon has said, they have never been what would be considered 'cuddly' in my experience. Some seem to enjoy being petted, but this is rare and even with members of their own species they are not very affectionate physically. Mine wont even share a hide box without a lot of angry chattering.
>> Anonymous
Get a chicken!
>> Anonymous
>>158771
Yeah, I second the space requirements. They need to be able to run around at their leisure, rather than just when you feel like letting them out, so they get all the exercise they need.

Cuddliness is a personality trait that depends on the individual guinea pig. Both of my female guinea pigs love for me to lay back on the couch and let them snuggle under my chin.

OP, get a rat. And shoot yourself for considering a hamster, particularly a dwarf.
Get a fancy rat from a nice breeder, do some research, get two males. Its your best bet- they're not large, they don't stink up a storm, they're very playful and fun. I used to have two females. So very insane and ZOOM but they were entirely enthusiastic about humans playing with them. They'd run to the door of the cage if you came near, waiting to be able to see you again. You can actually teach them simple tricks and whatnot!
Rabbits and guinea pigs are not 'cage pets' and never should be kept so. Rabbits in particular should NOT be kept in whatever 'rabbit cage' they sell in pet stores, unless it has an outside enclosure and only goes into the cage at X time of the day/night.

I'm not the person who posted that, but I'm assuming most people like a pet that is cuddly, sociable, wants to be with you, etc. Hamsters are none of that. Dwarf hamsters are especially squirmy and bitey and won't want much at all to do with you besides get you to feed them.

>> Anonymous
>>158815
Whats fucking good about them? On the offchance that you get a good one, it'll still smell far worse than a rat or guinea pig put together.
The majority of them are nocturnal, and if you wake them up they shall be hideously bitey. Most of them are bitey little shits, neurotic, won't sit and chillax with you, sleep during the day, eat eachother, and generally make BAD pets.
Whatever you do, just dont get one, please. So many people get them due to OMGZADORABLE but there is a LOT more to a pet than that.
Good enough of a reason for you?

I don't know why people go on about their smell. Mine doesn't smell at ALL. What I've had that really smells terrible is a mouse!

And she's awake during the day. She runs over to get my attention whenever I go by the cage, lets me pet her even when she's asleep, and guess what? She's a dwarf hamster.

Hamsters require taming - they won't be sweet like that until you teach them you aren't a bad person. If you're too much of a retard to do that, then don't get a hamster.
