So I'm pretty sure there's a fucking mother raccoon in the attic nursing its litter. It's normally completely silent but there's the occasional very loud banging around with a deep growling accompanied by a shrill whimper. Is this some rabies infested rat mauling its own children?

This is at my mother's house and she can't really afford to call animal control right away (how much does such a job go for anyway?). Anyone ever deal, or know how to deal with this shit? I've read to set a bright light up with radio blasting talk radio and a rag wet with ammonia and that might persuade them to leave.

Baby raccoons are cute and all but we can't have the things pissing and shitting and chewing wires up there. :/

Smoke them out by setting your house on fire.

Annoying them is a good idea so that the mother takes her young by the neck and GTFO. You must ensure that you don't get too close so that she feels directly threatened and attacks you. Before trying to annoy it, make sure that there is at least one easy way out of your attic. If all of them are gone, make sure that there is absolutely no way back into your attic. When the kits are nine weeks old the gang will leave of its own if there is a way down from your attic to the ground. If the descent is too complicated for the young it can take several weeks more.

Thanks, yeah pretty sure it got there via tree branch so hopefully it will be able to traverse back across it.

I've heard the thing in just about every corner of the attic even though it's only been audible a few times, which seems odd. Plus the whole growling and whimpering.

Bah, raccons are crawling with disease. If you have any pets that can reach the attic make sure they don't.
