Pictured is the same type of betta I have - I can't take a picture right now but I'll try to get one later
Anyway since the fourth I noticed my betta was showing signs of dropsy He also had a white puss looking thing on his side Since then I've been giving him Maracyn-Two Yesterday the white thing opened up and has now completely fallen off -- of course now scales are missing and he has a bit of a hole
He really seems to be doing much better (first day he barely moved) but he's eaten nearly nothing for the past four days now and he's already quite old - about four years
So anyone here deal with dropsy before? His body hasn't bloated anymore since the first day but his scales are still raised - how long usually until they go down?

Your betta is old. 2 or 3 years are average lifespan.

usually fish don't recover from dropsy, especially if they are old, like your betta. I would give him five more days or so and if you see no signs of improvement I would euthanize him.

i had 3-4 platies catch dropsy over 5 years or so and all of them died, good luck but it will probably die

But when they have dropsy do they just gradually worsen or can get better then get sick again?
His face isn't swollen anymore and he really seems much to be doing better than the first day He's been swimming around a bit and has been responsive to me when I go near him

Who knows.
I had fish recover from serious illness and others die in three days.
Just depends how fit your buddy still is.
Give it time.

I have the exact same betta also. He's currently living with a few guppies (actually a lot of guppies because they breed like rabits) right now. Anyway, good luck curing him though. It'll probably take about a week so don't give up just yet.

do they get along well? I always heard that bettas attack guppies 'cause they have similar finnage.

They get along pretty decently well. He's also fairly old so he's pretty lazy and usually sleep by the heater. Once in a while, he would chase the guppy for maybe a second or two (i guess it does it for kicks?). A baby guppy did nip on his fins previously but that was only one rare occurance. And another problem that i had was once i found one of the guppy who got stuck between the floating island for the crab and the aquarium wall (perhaps she got there because the males were chasing her?). Somehow she got stuck belly up and parts of their fins were missing with the betta swimming near by. I thought she died when i found her but she's fine now. Otherwise, the betta and the guppies get along pretty well (though i would recommand some hiding places). Though, when my girl friend bought me that betta, he was actually inside a guppy tank at the fish store and not those stupid little pots that most stores keep them in. Sorry about the randomish post because i don't feel too well right now @.@

P.S: you probably would want to have at least 4 or 5 guppies along with the betta to buffer agression if it does exist.
