Since your board's name is Animals and Nature, I'd like to ask you guys if anyone here knows if fungi can, on their own, produce gases - especially oxygen.

fungi don't create oxygen. they just squat on decaying matter & put out clouds of spores. which may look like a gas at times.

Yes, they can create and assortment of gasses. Like all living things the consume and have waste products.

They do not photosynthesize, their energy comes from decomposing plants and/or animals. They are extremely efficient and produce small amounts of CO2. If you imagine burning all the dead vegetation in 10x10 cms of forest floor and record the amount of CO2 produced, this is the amount of gas the fungus growing there will produce over autumn. So they don't produce much gas.
