A 20-pound stray cat whose girth got him stuck in a pet door while trying to plunder some dog food was reunited with his owner this week.

Owner Geoff Ernest said the tubby tabby, Hercules, went missing while he was in Seattle for a lung transplant six months ago.

Jadwiga Drozdek, who lives in suburban Portland, found the feline stuck in the dog door of her home a few days ago, helped free him and gave him a plate of food on her patio.

While at the Oregon Humane Society, Hercules was diagnosed with feline immunodeficiency virus, similar to HIV in humans.

The society says cats can live years with the virus and still make good pets, but owners should keep them indoors to keep it from spreading.

Hercules, meanwhile, has had his 15 minutes of fame, piling up thousands of hits on YouTube and other websites.

My vet said my cat would HAVE to be killed when he got that, so he was.

I knew there was a reason I hated that bitch.

that "bitch" was right, I've never heard of a way to keep a cat that has that virus alive, and have a happy and healthy life. They become anemic and weak so the best thing is what you did for your cat.I'm sorry it's always hard to lose a pet.

I think the virus is unrelated to his weight problem.

However, a vet saying you have to put down a cat because it's overweight is pretty BS. I mean, they could probably die of obesity, if she said it was certain to do that and wanted it put down anyway... but just for being fat?

My cat is turning 17 next month. He was a mainly outdoor cat where FIV is rampant and he has a fighting, alpha personality with other cats. We've known that he has FIV for over 7 years. He's lived really quite comfortably with good nutrition, vitamin supplements, and early detection of bacterial infections and viruses. We also converted him into an indoor cat so he wouldn't infect other cats.

Like with HIV, there's no reason that a cat with FIV is unable to lead a relatively normal, healthy life. Additionally, FIV in cats is milder in extent than HIV is in humans - do we condemn HIV patients to death because they might need help fighting off an infection? My vet suggested that we try interferon starting next month for FIV treatment - we're going to go ahead with that because my cat is very healthy and brave.

I can see how you'd want to euthanize cats that were unhealthy before they got FIV and continue to become less so as the disease progresses, though, as a matter of humanity and comfort for the cat.

Do you know what should get you condemned to death penalty: Simply thinking about giving interferon to a bloody cat when lots of people who need it can't afford it.

WTF? I don't see how he is responsible for the effing price of interferon.
You're right to be angry, but if you want to slap a bitch, do it outside /an/.

Good luck!

That cat weighs 20 pounds AND he has FIV? No wonder he doesn't need to be put down. He's doing just fine. And if he ran off 6 months ago, how big was he then? Strays tend to lose a bit of weight, but this fucker weighs 20 pounds.

Not to mention that feline interferon is much easier and cheaper to produce than human interferon... Human interferon is complex and takes a long time to produce one dose.

And totally different overall. I'd love to watch #57910 give feline interferon to a human and watch them... you know, not experience anything.

So if HIV came from humans fucking monkeys, did FIV come from cats fucking monkeys?

It came from furfags fagging their cats.

HIV came from natives eating monkey meat...not beating it.

Although it can't be proven (since anything qualifyable as proof has been long since destroyed) HIV may have come into humans from a vaccination made using chimps with SIV...

Actually there are a few recorded cases of HIV predating the vaccine creation.

It is generally accepted now that the two HIV strains arose from people eating monkies.
