Hey /an/.

So I came home from work today looking forward to playing with my guinea pig for a while before I went to sleep, (I worked a night shift at Petco) but as soon as I tried to pick her up I knew something was wrong. She was very limp and not animated like she usually is. I carried her inside and after putting her in a blanket I saw that her stool was very watery, she had discharge around her eyes and some crap under her mouth. So I cleaned her off the best I could and brought some food and water, which she didn't touch, and hoped for the best.
Having recently gotten my second DUI and being COMPLETELY fucking broke, taking her to a vet was out of the question. Plus seeing her in the condition she was already in I wondered if the only thing I could do was make her as comfortable as possible.
So after finding her in this condition at 8am I held her until 5pm, seeing her condition gradually decrease and her breathing grow more erratic with the saddest whining sounds I've ever heard her make.
About 20 minutes ago, my best friend died in my arms.

tl;dr my guinea pig died.

This hurts so bad I don't know what to do.

yea, holding things when they die is really... surreal i guess. My advice is to probably have a little funeral with people she liked and take a sick day, maybe. Also make sure to remember the good times (very important). If you get another pet, wait at least a month or until you don't feel sad anymore (whichever comes second) and get a pet of a different species or you'll constantly be reminded of her (also fairly important IMO).

A few years ago my family's cat died and I had known him since I was a toddler. When i first met him, I hated him but then we bacame freinds after a long time. He had a tumor and ended up dying in mine and my mothers arms via injection. Every now and then i remember back to a few days or so before he died, when we both curled up on the rug together and fell asleep. It wasn't some crazy special moment or anything but it was one of those love-filled 'good times' that I'm talking about. That's the sort of thing to remember.

a *second* DUI? D:

Oh well. At least she died with somebody around her. Poor little guinea piggie ;_;

Nice job, faggot, your drinking problem killed your pet.

That's not really fair. OP wasn't behaving maliciously in any way. Choosing alcohol over an animal would be awful, but this was just unlucky coincidence.

Sorry for the loss OP.

Fuck fairness. He should feel like shit for driving drunk and endangering people's lives.

he didn't just endanger people's lives, he killed his pet, too.

OP took better care of their dying animal than my friend did.

At like 10pm she calls me up blubbering about how her guinea pig collapsed on its side and how it wouldn't get up. She said she'd been picking it up and trying to get it on its feet but it couldn't stand on its own. She asks me what to do; I say take her to the vet, and she asks me where the vet is (apparently she's never taken ANY of her previous pets to the vet before). She starts yelling at ME when I tell her I don't know (I have no pets atm, or a car for that matter) so I wind up looking up some places on the 'net FOR her.

Long story short, her "beloved" pet dies night. Totally saw it coming. The week before, I'd gone to her place and it was already looking pretty bad. She'd covered its cage with a large black plastic garbage bag, and wrapped the cold, rigid (but still alive) guinea pig in one too, thinking it would help "insulate" her. I replaced those with a warm hot water bottle wrapped in a towel and told her to take her pet to the vet. She didn't, obviously.

Oh, and she also had to constantly be reminded to give her other pet, a rabbit, water, because apparently the thing that kept the bottle hanging on the side of the cage broke one day and she never felt like fixing it.

tl;dr OP, thank you for being a considerate pet owner. May your pet RIP.

That's the thing about guinea pigs, OP.

I've seen it happen a couple of times - fine one minute, and nearly too far gone to save the next. Such is the life of a prey animal. If only hiding their sickness wasn't so hard wired, maybe we'd have a little more warning.

You probably did the best thing, considering your circumstances. Just remember the good times you spent with her and don't dwell on her passing. Best advice I can give.

Just because your friend was a fuckup doesn't mean this guy isn't a fuckup too. Don't insult considerate pet owners by calling this drunk driving, pet killing asshole one.

Oh for fucks sake; someone just lost their beloved pet and it WASN'T thier fault it was sick. Not everyone can afford thousands of dollars for veterinary treatment, and it cost me 1,500 dollars to treat my guinea pig within the span of 1 month and he STILL died. Leave the poor guy alone

To be fair, it is his fault for the DUIs. I mean, his financial situation obviously sucks, but if I were him, I'd be a lot more careful about exacerbating it with irresponsible drinking :(

I understand, but it isn't like he's celebrating the fact that the piggy's gone and he didn't care. Obviously, if he could have done something he would. He likely would have been broke and in that rough financial situation anyway. Granted, a DUI isn't the smartest thing and he hopefully won't be an idiot and go it again, but that doesn't mean that his financial situation wouldn't have been any better and that he's to blame for killing his guinea piggy
