Spotted hyenas are very interesting and cool animals. They're not related to canids at all, in fact their closest relatives are mongooses and meerkats. Hyenas have the strongest jaws of any land animal, able to break the femur of an elephant. Their clans are very close-knit and are much more stable and peaceful than lion prides, though there are sometimes hierarchy or breeding disputes. Hyenas hunt more often than lions do, and they're good at it, having a body designed for chasing and tiring out prey means they pursue for the long haul rather than the sprint. Of course they scavenge, but nearly all predators do.
Lions and hyenas have a blood hatred of each other, going so far as to almost go to war against each other. As the two top predators of Africa, their only rivals are each other and they let it be known (at least The Lion King got that part right).
