I always wind up with an asshole cat. One that doesn't like being rubbed, bites the shit out of people, likes his space, and doesn't even pur. I still love the guy, it's almost kind of funny how mean he is, but I'm going to pick up a new kitten at the pound in a couple of days and was wondering if there's a way to tell if a cat is gonna suck or not?

well I think it's all personality, but if you're too nice that's your problem too. If the fucker bites you, grab it by its neck, pin it down a little, and hiss behind it's ears. too tired to make a funny version of this process. make sure to let it go though...

my cat's awesome. dunno what the fuck I did or if it's just her. I don't put up with her shit, but she doesn't tolerate mine either lol.

I don't know, man. Cats operate on instinct a lot more than, say, a dog. I'm not sure there's too much you can do to change the temperament of a cat whose natural disposition it is to be antisocial.

I've raised three kittens into adulthood. My method of nurturing never changed but nonetheless, the personality of the cats as adults were all radically different.

Two never bite, one often does (though it's just rough play). The non-biters are both female, so you might invest in a girl cat if mine are any indication of a pattern.

Also, they're personalities became sweeter as they aged, so there's also an argument for adopting an adult rather than a kitten.

To get a cat to be mellow and nice and friendly, you have to be a dick.

When the cat walks past, nudge it with your foot. Don't kick it and break ribs, but poke it with the end of your shoe. Show that you know it's there.

Take every opportunity to touch the cat. Even if I'm just walking past, I pat my cats on the head, or say hello. You have to show that you know they are there, that you are happy with their presence. Touching the cat should be equal to a nod of greeting or saying hello in humans.

When he bites you, cry. Don't break out in sobbing, but make a sharp sound like "Ow!" and take your hand away. Every time he does something you don't like, make that sound and move away. He will start to feel guilty, and become gentle.

Don't get a new cat, it will make things worse, and the kitten will be too stressed over the "asshole" cat to deal with its new environment.

It may be your cat is genuinely a jerk. That's okay, find him a new home, and then read up a bit more about cats, and get a new one.

theyre not nice to you because they dont like being called assholes

Here's an idea:
Look into different BREEDS of cats. Long-haired cats tend to be more laid-back and affectionate.
It'd cost a lot of money to get a nice purebred, but hey, a good cat is the greatest pet ever.
OR, you could speak to the people who you're getting cats from. Get a slightly older cat, not a kitten, when its personality shows.

maybe you're just not a likeable person?

"You're such an ass even CATs, known for their indifference to humans, hate you."

are you sure he doesn't purr? I've got a cat with a stealth purr, you can really only tell he's purring if you've got a hand on his chest/neck. It's not audible at all.
