Standard Schnauzer: Too small? Anonymous
Giant Schnauzers are too big and have health/longevity issues compared with Standard Schnauzers.

But I don't want a too small a dog.

Standard? Bah, wake me when they're ISO compliant.

who's the dame?

giant schnauzers are fucking huge. I think they tend to get hip problems, also heard diabeetus is nasty for them.

The thing with mutts is that temperament is a crapshoot. If I don't get a purebred schnauzer, I'll get a mixed schnauzer with something else.

See, I've always seen mutts to be more intelligent, better behaved and less tempermental than pure-breds. And don't pure-breds tend to get fucked up, psychologically a lot of the time?

Agreed. The concept of predictable temperament in pedigree dogs is largely a myth. Supposedly good natured breeds are just as bad as any other when raised badly.
>> Anonymous
Temperament is more predictable if you know the breed(s) a dog is. So I think purebred are more predictable, since the traist a mutt carry are hardly ever known.

But I agree, obviously environment is the biggest factor affecting a dog.

The whole mutt vs purebred debate is retarded and full of ancedotal data. I've seen many people try to get my husky to do tricks for them and ask me if he's stupid or something. I'm like... what? The ability to do tricks is your standard of intelligence? He's evidently smarter than you because he knows he has no reason to do tricks for you when it does not reward him, unlike stupid dogs that will do tricks all day like the retards they are.

So intelligence is a matter of perspective.

I wasn't talking about the intelligence of dog, more about what the dog was bred to do(ie, herd, guard, hunting).

Yeah? And my parents had an American Eskimo who was so high-strung, he gnawed his own paw off. Seriously, pure-bred dogs are FUCKED UP IN THE HEAD.

Generation after generation of inbreeding can do that to an animal.

Mutts are awesome! This is Yogi, he's a pit/lab/border collie mix.

As for the Temperment debate, well I'd say the average mutt has a better temperment than your average BYB purebred, which is the typical purebred that I come across. On the other hand (relating to the BYB factor) a lot of people buy a purebred, but don't understand the breed's history, don't exercise or train it according to it's needs, and end up with a totally neurotic animal... Hence the corgi thread the other day was full of "uuhhh my corgi runs all over the house and bites my feets uuhhhh."

If you want to figure out any dog's temperment you have interact with it and observe it. What is its stance like when you come up to it? Can you take a treat away from it? Can you touch its ear, feet, etc..? Socialization influences these factors more than breeding.

Back to the OP: look into a Black Russian Terrier.

Ancedotal, again. My mother had a mutt that was so neurotic he scratched his ear off. We have a chihuahua that is so moronic he keeps walking UNDER our feet, and jumping on the seat right before we sit down on it. And some kind of beagle mix that eats her own shit, pees on the floor and drinks it up, and constantly tries to swallow rocks whole.

She got all those mutts from the local pound that were on death row. Most mutts you meet in shelters are the cream of the crop, the 2% best that don't get euthanized.

My husky is the smartest dog I've ever met, he constantly challenges me to be one step ahead of him, knows he doesn't have to do shit without reward (what am I gonna do, punch him? That's a good way to turn him neurotic). Knows the difference betweenbeing on a lead or off, how to manipulate doors like it's nothing. Never mind when we're sledding, he plans for obstacles three steps ahead. And is extremely obedient when he knows it's for our own safety, and extremely disobedient when he knows I'm making a bad decision.

I've never, ever, in my life seen a mutt that did that. But again, that's just personal experience, I'm sure some other anonymous will chime in with the mostest brillantest mutt ever.

If the purebred dogs you've seen are all neurotic or high strung, you've only met 1) Backyard Breeder Purebreds, 2) Shitty owners that don't exercise their dogs nearly enough.

My husky is supposed to be this ADD crazy fucker dog that everyone says not to get! And yet he's sleeping by my side as usual, not getting into trouble, not being all ADD. Why? Because he's properly exercised physically and mentally.

It's not rocket science.

This got off-topic quick. I just wanted to see what people thought of Schnauzers.

And CV, don't bother replying you yellow song of a beach.

seriously i want to know who the chick is.
>> Anon
What the hell does it matter what size the dog is? Are we compensating for something? It's not like it's a toybreed that's unmanly. If you're a chick, that's a bigger wtf?
What space and time do you have to give to your dog? Small space and low time, smaller dog. Then yeah, the health issues should come into play.
As for BYB, I have a pom that's a BYB. He's no different in temperament than a big mutt. My mom's two purebreds from show lineage are fucking retards that shit, piss, bark, and the male bites. Lucky is a mutt, she sounds similiar to said husky, though she does tricks for whomever. A good ear scratch is good enough. Our neighbor has a pound mutt. I want to shoot the noisy fucker.
It's all luck of the draw really.
