so im planning on getting a dog. the thing is, ive never had one before. i live in an average sized house with a medium sized yard in FL.

any suggestions? preferably a dog that doesn't shed much, is smart/easy to teach, and barks less than other breeds.

try reaserching the breeds, do you want an active dog or one thats kinda lazy? what size do you want your dog to be? theres a lot to consider when getting a dog

eh an average energy dog that needs walks and likes to play,but as much as it enjoys that can also like just being lazy. and a medium sized dog.

Corgis shed like crazy. Hair everywhere. I personally don't care, but some people wouldn't like it.

I suggest an Australian Kelpie. Dont bark very much, make funny whining sounds. Nice medium size dogs, not aggressive or slobbery or ugly, The some of the black ones a too small I rekon, you would want a brown one. Can be trained fairly easily ( have taught ours numerous tricks and commands) Shedding, well, yea theres hair around but it stays inside pretty much all the time so its expected, but nothing major. Nice animals, need exersize everyday if possible. Dont know how easy would be to get in US

Kelpies are working dogs.
They will get up to mischief, get sick or both if they are bored. Not a city dog, really.

You suggest wrong. A Kelpie needs something to do or else it goes crazy. It'll fixate on one thing and that'll be its job, and you don't want a dog like that in an average-sized house with a medium back yard. I like Kelpies, but I feel sorry for the ones that can't 'work' like they're driven to.

Well, ours seems perfectly happy not working. like I said It is often takin on walks or out to places for running. He's often after food if that's what you mean by fixating on something, although he was like that from day one so..

That's good then that you can give him the interest and activity he needs :) Not everyone can though, so it's definitely a dog that urban/city people should think twice about before getting.

But often a kelpie mix is a good solution to the herding/working instinct! We had a border collie x kelpie, she was the most gentle, loving dog ever ;-;

(God, posting pics of my dad on 4chan... How much wronger does it get?)

The size of a yard has nothing to do with the amount of excersize a dog is going to get. The dog isn't going to go out there and walk himself. Kelpies and other herding dogs need something to keep their minds occupied like agility, trials or obedience.

I know you couldn't know, but you still pissed me off. First, she passed away a year ago. She's about 13 in that pic, about a year before she died. Second, what appears to be fat is, in fact, a very large cancerous tumour. We thought she was fat too at the time, and vets told us time after time her distended stomach was just fat, her digestion problems were related to the anti-inflammatories she was on for arthritis.

And then... "Oh wow, sorry guys, the reason her stomach is distended is because her liver is full of tumours." We treated her with painkillers, methadone, some other various stuff until her lymph nodes swelled and she couldn't breathe, and she had to be put down at home surrounded by my family.

tl;dr - Vets don't care what's wrong with your best friend.

Here she is as a young'un <3
