So, my little brother has some hamsters, and he loves them to death. But, he is afraid to put in his wheel because he thinks one of the hamsters heads will get caught in between the two bars (this has apparently happened once before, when both hamsters were trying to use the wheel). Do the hamsters need a wheel? and, if so, is this a serious risk?

I have a hamster but I don't have that problem. If your brother is really worried about it, you could always buy the hamsters a ball. But the hamsters have to have some way of getting exercise. So you could buy a different wheel, or buy a ball.

You can always get a plastic wheel w/ no spokes.

My mother breeds hamsters. We have very many. The metal wheels pose a risk of catching their feet and breaking them. The plastic ones carry no such risk and are easier to clean. Take my advice, go plastic.

Should I ever get a hamster again I will never forget this!

We had four terribly cute field mice. Now we have three---because of the terrible Spinning Wheel of Doom! If there's only one critter, it's fine, but a 3-mouse-powered wheel is deadly to mouse #4.
