Do you guys like hunting?
>> Anonymous
I don't have anything against the guys in the Ecological Hunting Union (Ökologischer Jagdverband) here. But there is still a large number of hunters with a mindset from the 19th century and a sadistic delight to kill animals. (Fox hunting in England comes to mind.) Thank God, the amount of hunters thinking like that is shrinking. At least in Europe. I don't know about the situation in America. Big-game hunters who shoot endangered species in Africa need to be punched in the face, though.

I myself do not hunt and I'd prefer not to. However, if I would have to in order to survive in the wild, I would not hesitate to shoot a deer or something.
>> Anonymous
For sport, not really.
But I'd like to hunt deer one day.
I can eat the meat, use the fur for a pillow or something and carve things out of its bones.

Or I can pay someone else to do because I don't feel like sitting in a tree all morning.
Is that a moose?

Nope. Hasn't changed much here.
Its pretty much just the rednecks now. Teenagers these days do pop boners over kicking kittens though.

I am a hunter. I hunt for the deer, not the sport of killing an animal, and eat venison, and am interested in making deerhide leather. Every hunter I know is like this, and we all get mad at those who hunt for sport or just for antlers. I think it is bad that quite a few people get misconceptions about hunting, because they hear about the very few bad hunters :/ We good hunters just are too quiet!

I'm from England and the fact that fox hunting exists here still must make my country look so uncivilised to the rest of the world. Its barbaric and I can't believe people get a kick out of it. One query I havre about hunting is; If people hunt to 'control' populations, who are we to say a population must be controlled? isn't that what natural selection is for? Do we hunt animals to control populations for our own convenience?

I really don't understand why treehuggers hate hunting so much. I mean I love animals, I really do, but hunting is great too. And I am sure an average hunter does more to preserve nature than some average urban PETA-lover. Since civilization has destroyed most of the big predators, hunters are the only ones who keep large game numbers reasonable. At my local area hunters do A LOT other stuff too to preserve nature, renovate shallow water areas that have over grown, provide winter feeding areas for deers, and make sure that large birds have suitable forests to nest in. I bet if we counted the number of old forest fellings that hunters have prevented in comparison with the number that "activists" have prevented it would be something like hundred to one.

And furthermore, dog breeding is actually a by-product of hunting.
>> Anonymous
I hunt, and several of my good friends do as well.

In my experience the vast majority of hunters are upstanding people, however, there are assholes out there who break the law and who kill for no reason. In my opinion, if you shoot an animal then you EAT IT. If you want a trophy too, that's fine by me, but it is downright wrong to kill an animal only to leave it there or to take its hide or horns only, and in most places that is a crime.

By the way,>>153083.

Let me explain something. While there is illegal hunting in Africa, it is almost exclusively done by the locals, who usually do it for meat. (Look up "bushmeat") Illegal hunting in Africa is dangerous business. If you get caught by pretty much anyone, (landowner, hunter, professional guide, policeman, etc.) they don't ask questions. They just shoot you and leave the body for the buzzards. As for the "endangered species hunting" that is poorly understood. Yes, you can legally hunt elephants and other exotic animals in Africa, but only in places where they are NOT endangered. Most species are illegal to hunt in most countries. Hunting is only allowed under a strict quota system (the licenses are very expensive, even by western standards) and only in those areas where the animals are not endangered. Furthermore, every last little bit of the animal is used. The meat is eaten, the hide is used for leather, the hair is used to make brushes, and so on.

I just finished reading the memoirs of a mercenary who fought in Kosovo during the 90's. Well anyways, there was this german guy in his squad who had been in some African county a few years back. Can't remember in which one, but it was mentioned. The local officials had secretly hired him to kill poachers at a local national park.
The german fellow told that it was his dream job. Every morning he drove his Jeep to the grassy plains, hiked a couple of miles, and put up a sniper's nest near a horde of elephants. Then he waited a couple of hours for the poachers and sniped them all before any animals got killed. At five pm. he packed his rifle, and headed for the tourist resort for cold driks and tourist girls seeking holiday romances.

Three words, FUCKING AWESOME JOB!

I consider myself an animal rights person (not a PETA member), but my feelings on hunting are similar to what others have said: I don't really have a problem if it's for food. I also don't hunt myself, but would not be opposed to doing it for survival.

I do think we shouldn't hunt some animals, such as wolves. There are lots of dear, so that's one thing.

Is bow hunting considered inhumane?

Seems to be like it is.
Get shot in the ass and you run 5 miles before you can't go anymore. And if the animal isn't found, what a painful and agonizing death.
Same with trappers.
>> Anonymous
>>153250

Depends. If the hunter knows what he/she is doing and puts the arrow where he is supposed to, the animal dies very quickly. If the animal runs 5 miles, then he screwed up bigtime!
>> Anonymous

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrying_capacity

Letting natural selection run its course would be really fucking inhumane. We've absolutely devastated the habitats of species such as foxes, deer, etc. so in order to prevent massive animal starvation and outbreaks of population decimating disease (of varieties which may be dangerous to humans as well) we need to control their populations somehow. There's a lot of math behind this; google 'population models' if you're in the mood.
>> Anonymous
>>153250
A non-fatal shot with an arrow is actually less antagonizing than a non-fatal shot with a bullet. Getting sliced with sharp blades typically doesn't hurt as much as omgblunt trauma, and most deer who bleed to death go to sleep before dying. Some deer who get hit with an arrow don't even panic and run, they just look for what that noise was, wonder at that big mosquito which bit them, then continue feeding... feeling tired, gotta take a nap... zzz... venison!

You have clearly never been hunting. A/C in a blind? What the heck are you thinking? Yeah, the deer don't mind the noise of the A/C system not to mention the GAS GENERATOR required to run it....

I hate to break it to you boss, but hunting is damn challenging even with all those "gotta-have-em" products on the market.

Then again, in the end it doesn't really matter. Wether you walk through the woods for five hours in calf-deep snow to shoot a deer, or if you do it from a permanent blind on a woods trail, the end result is the same. You shoot deer, clean it, pack out the meat, and eat it.

We have X amount of deer and Y square acres of woodland. How many deer need to die before winter to ensure that all of them will be fed, and the forest will be able to grow back after being grazed?

i approve of hunting in fair conditions, eg you gotta treck for 15miles, then hit from several hundred yards away

i dont go for stuff like turkey hunts, where they sit in blinds with decoys and shoot from 10ft away, ESPECIALLY with a rifle, how HAX is that?

Woo, elephant hunting! I can contribute.

This is the elephant my grandpa killed in Africa. I can't recall which country.

The area where he killed it is, believe it or not, too full of elephants. There are so many that they are destroying their own habitat. Hunters can enroll themselves in a lottery to win a tag for the chance to hunt a bull elephant. When you win, you get to pay a shitton of money (most of which, theoretically, goes back into conservation) for a guide and license. When the elephant is killed, it is skinned and the meat is given to the locals. You're allowed to do whatever you want with the skin.

To my understanding, this is how big game hunting is done in Africa, depending on how rare the animal is.

as inhumane as a 1inch diameter hole through your lungs, heart or liver can feel

death is pretty fast, its just that fiiinal set-on of adrenaline and fear, before the animal quickly bleeds to death and collapses

one: even a drop of sweat will scare deer from 5miles away, forget ac or even food (the latter can attract a bear and no gun will save you from an ambush)
two: you legally cannot put bait and sit with a gun, there has to be like a week timespan

My grandpa is old and his passion is hunting. I'm not one to judge.

He's gone on two African safaris, an Arctic trip for a polar bear (when they were legal), Russia, Australia, and probably more that I'm forgetting.

He's also a very proud owner of a wildlife reserve, and an active conservationist.

And yeah, it's a water buffalo with a foam-Maasai. One of the more interesting mounts.

Knowing which calls to use and when, positioning yourself and disguising yourself well, remaining absolutely still and not making noise, there are a lot of things to consider.

Look through these tips and you can get an idea of the difficulty and finesse required:

sorry if i sounded a little cynical but i really am not impressed with the level of difficulty i see on the outdoor channel, those hicks shoot the birds from 10-15yds, like that is a skill...

one time i even saw them shoot from a bow from about 4yds. I mean i could see the eyes of the bird, how close it was
>> Anonymous
>>153864
That's alright. Hunting and fishing shows don't give a good representation of what the experience is really like; you see five minutes of a multi-hour endeavor.

However, most of the shooting is done from that range. It isn't the shot that's difficult (though you can get anxious and miss), but getting the turkey close enough.
>> Anonymous
>>153864

if they showed the entire hunt, the episodes would be 6+ hours long and boring as hell.

Hunting for humans is just like hunting for animals, you want to get as close to your prey, or your prey as close to you, as possible to maximize your chances of success. Deer, turkeys, moose and most other game animals have superb smell, sight and hearing, so you have to do everything possible to hide your smell and not make a sound or move too much while you wait. To even see anything means you gotta be there at the right place and time. Lotta luck involved. If you're using calls to attract, you gotta know how to do it and when and how loud, etc. Hunting is really difficult, unless you get in a helicopter with a sniper rifle.
