I would love to have one as a pet.

So /an/, I was wondering. How difficult it is to get a duck as a pet?

It's as difficult as taking your lazy ass to the closest market. You probably don't want a duck if you're one of those "omfg animal cruelty" fags, because you'll have to clip its wings.

I think it's a bit weird that every time there is a pic of some cute wild animal in /an/ there's immediately someone going like "OMG I want one as a pet". They are wild animals. They don't usually enjoy living in captivity. Real animal lovers...

Well, this had nothing to do with ducks. I just find it stupid. Let's just watch them and let them live in nature...

Don't forget eating them.. mmmm duck

Your message makes sense, but is misguided. Ducks live happily in the backyard as long as you make (a lot of) fresh water and food available to them every day. Often, you don't even need to clip their wings. I know, because I grew up with ducks.

You don't have to clip Pekin duck's wings (the duck shown in the picture) Their body weight is too much for them to carry. I've had several ducks before, and if you have time and the right facilities for them, they make great pets. WATCH OUT FOR RACCOONS. =' (

You're propably right about the ducks, you know more than me about that. I was thinking about all kinds of animals that people are taking as pets these days. Well, still stupid to say it in a duck thread tho...

I like duckies.

Good luck keeping mallards (as posted by 86809) without clipping their wings. They're good fliers with migratory instinct. They're certainly useful callers for hunting, but like ferrets they're tools, not pets.

Delicious fly, you must eat it!

I've kept mallards before, among other breeds. Unless you live extremely close to a large body of water (near wild ducks) or don't have any fencing ducks aren't likely to go anywhere if you get them as hatchlings and provide them with proper food and water. They're not interested in going anywhere if their needs are provided for. Then again, I live in southern California so the climate never necessitates migration.

Also, they never shut-up and shit all over the everything. It looks like mud splattered everywhere but smells a lot worse.

There's nothing really cruel about wing clipping (in most cases). It grows back, there's no nerves, and most clipped birds in captivity are of the variety that only fly to go from tree to tree or migrate when necessary. It'd be different if they were birds of prey or corvids.

Also, most ducks in captivity are breeds domesticated from the Mallard, with like one exception. They're more poultry or decorative animals than 'pets', but... they're domestic. That's like saying 'leave the chickens to live in nature'.

Wild chickens? That's a new concept.

I've had ducks (pic related). Still have one. All you need is a big backyard and a constant source of water (such as a kiddie pool). Well, and food, obviously. But remember, ducks are messy as hell, and will most likely grow up mean no matter how you raise them. Mine were hand-raised by me and attack everyone and everything. Though that could just be a reflection of me...

Anyway, I love ducks, but they're only cuddly as ducklings.

I agree. Wing clipping for birds is like hair cutting for humans.

Oh yeah, I completely forgot about the aggression. Ducks, geese, and pretty much all waterfowl no matter how affectionate as chicks will bite your crotch when they come of age. Seriously. Protect your junk with a leather apron or something because they'll try to crush your balls and rip your wang or labia off.

ducks are cute and god damned delicious

I saw a duck today trying to cross a really busy intersection and quaking at the cars. I sure hope he didn't get hit but that's just wishful thinking considering where he was and his insolance at my car tire.

RIP duck :(
