I returned home to find this guy on the lawn. At first I thought he's dead, but on closer inspection he appears to be breathing shallowly.

I found him together with my cat, who you can see in this picture. It appears that my cat is nursing the kitten. We speculated that he took the kitten back home since we have a few kittens with the same pattern of fur.

Sweet. Take it to the vet and stop wasting time asking /an/ what to do.

Can't and won't. He's unresponsive, his tongue is sticking out and ants are starting to crawl on him. We decided to put him in a box and await Nature's decision.

We believe that he got in an accident. What my cat's role in this is unclear, since you can see the grease stains in >>14355.

sage for the saddening kitten.
Tell us if he lives or dies, though
(Wouldn't he have more chances to live if you actually brought him to the vet now?)

He's dead.

No, it will not help. Lets just say that he is in his last breaths already.

Well it was nice of you cat to try and help

That is what touched me. He doesn't make a noise while we were feeding him today (few hours after death) and he's there when we buried the kitten.

this story was awfully sad.
I wish there would have been something to do to help the damn kitten.

Weird and yes, touching reaction from your cat too..

Sometimes kittens just die. He looks a little old for it to be FtT (aka SIDS) though.

Thank you for trying to help him.

O rly? you're way too clever bitter anon.

seems odd behavior for a male cat to be so concerned over a kitten.

Precisely.

I forgot to add something. It is most likely that the kitten was involved in an auto accident. But I'm at loss to explain why there is grease on my cat. Two victims?
>> Bitter Anon !!WJLRQ1cwCyZ
This is going to come off as my normal trolling, but:

Have you considered your cat killed the kitten? Tomcats do that sort of thing. They often bring dead animals to their owners as "presents". Kittens like to hide in car engines/wheelwells, and it's possible your cat got grease on it dragging he kitten from one of those places.

If there are no broken bones and your cat has no wounds, then it's extremely unlikely there was a car accident. Now that the kitten is dead, you can't judge on whether or not there is a nerve issue (such as the kitten responding to pain in a lower limb) that can result from cats fighting and a nerve getting severed or pinched.

It really does not matter. I would check your cat for wounds and keep him apart from the rest of your cats. He may have picked up a disease from the kitten, even if he did not cause it's death. I hope you kept the rest of your cats, especially the kittens, separate from the dying one.

It's actually not unheard of for tomcats to adopt kittens if they're neutered. In fact it's often harder to get a female cat to accept a new (unrelated) kitten than a tom.

The tomcat killed the kitten with the sit down lawn mower, or the tomcat killed him with grease.

Take him to a fucking pet plACE. they will put him out of his misery..that is just sad..Nobody deserves to suffer...

Thread is tl;dr. Why did op not just take it to a vet again?

Because Op pronounced him dead

Scruff of the kittens neck looks wet. That could either be from being carried around by your cat or by your cat administering the death strike. If you check out that area and can find puncture wounds (look around the throat too) then it is pretty likely your cat killed it.
