We rabbitproofed about 1/4 our house, it cost maybe $20 and took 2 hours. And this is considering our current rabbit is an escape artist (little guy got out of a 42" cage wall and over a slanted 5' barrier and BAM up the stairs).
Everything else involves being careful and not leaving harmful things around. Our rabbit tears up phone books and cardboard, which is just fine, and we let it play outside a few hours a day (keeping an eye out for hawks) in our backyard (which is fully sealed, no escaping via digging).
Aside from that, they are much more affectionate when you raise them from babies. Ours is only 5 months old and he's already running up to us and nudging us when he wants to be petted, and follows us around the house.
