I've got two, a red and a blonde, both boys. The red one was a puppy mill rescue and was totally confused and frightened to death of everything when we brought him home. He got attached to me almost immediately, and even though he's much more confident and outgoing now (we've had him 5 years), he's still upset if I'm not home when I'm supposed to be and keeps everybody away from me if I'm sitting down or in my bedroom. He'll only bite the other dogs, but he makes a big racket if anyone gets to close. The blonde is much more independent, but is horribly affectionate if the mood strikes him or if you call him. He can be a brat at times, and is the only one I've had that bites (we've curbed that a lot since we adopted him, though). He is at the same time the most delinquent and one of the best dogs I've ever had. It's hard to explain. Honestly, I love them both and wouldn't trade them for the world, but they're not for everyone.
