Hi /an/

I have a problem with one of my cats. He is 3 years old, and over the past 6 months I've noticed the hair on his back is becoming increasingly greasy. He is an indoor only kitty, so I know he isn't dirty just from being outside. I'm currently feeding him, as well as a cat from the same litter, Purina One Advanced Nutrition and Hairball formula. If anyone has any idea on what might be causing this please help. He doesn't seem to mind it, but it annoys me because his coat is becoming a lot darker than it used to be, and he looks bad while lying in the sun.

Thanks!

I forgot to mention, I occasionally brush him, but not only does he really not like it, usually not that much hair comes up, and I feel like im just pulling out hair that wasn't ready to come off anyways. I've tried several different brushes, but he really doesn't like them at all and usually just pulls them out of my hand whenever i sit down to brush him.

OP here, rofl this has got to be a troll. Nothing in the house to bite him other than another cat. Like I said he doesn't care about it being greasy at all, and his hair isnt coming out in clumps, he's eating fine, and in perfect health.

I'm thinking it's probably the food i'm feeding him. Does anyone have any recommendations on what I should start feeding him instead? He doesn't eat treats or wet food either btw.

Remember, it's better to have greasy fur than dry fur. And, cats don't need to be brushed, that's what the hair on their tongues act as (A brush.)

Op here, it's perfectly fine to brush cats, that way they dont get hairballs and don't shed all over the place. I dont know why he doesn't like to be brushed, he just doesn't. But his brother does. Of course his brother has thicker hair and is white.

Nutro Indoor Cat formula

does your cat have ready access to fresh water?

Oh I know! I'm just saying you don't HAVE to, if your cat doesn't like it then he would be fine going without. :P

Thanks, I'll look in to this food. Because when I first got them, the same cat would throw up constantly, I finally figured out it was the chemicals that is put in tap water, and the vet recommended letting the water sit for a day before giving it to him.

Oh sorry, I misunderstood you. Yeah I usually dont brush him, but sometimes he lets me for about a minute before pulling the brush away. I just do it to make him look nicer ever now and then.

Just declaw your cats. This should fix the problem.

Declawing cats is the equivalent of removing the tips of human fingers up until the first joint in the finger. Just trim your cat's nails regularly and buy him/her a scratch post. When cats scratch, it's a completely natural behavior, declawing is such a radical and inhumane way of dealing with this behavior.

Is your cat castrated? There's a condition called "stud tail" where the cat will get a greasy spot on their back near the tail area. Or is the grease all down his back?

I agree with this Anonymous' suggestion.

It's all the way down his back, so I'm guessing its a nutritional issue.

Plus he's a virgin.

My cat rolls outside in the dirt a lot - if she doesn't go out, she seems to get greasy. You may just have a greasy cat. Toss some dirt on it and see if it helps.

It's probably his diet. Switch him to something more high quality.

Stop brushing him. He's a shorthair cat, and he doesn't require brushing. It's unnecessary and probably a bit stressful for him, especially if he doesn't like it.
