Alright /an/, heres a question.
Discussing animals with my family, we eventually came upon the subject of Calico Cats. Now, my aged grandfather, full of old wives tales and the like, told me that Calicos are all female. I was about to dismiss this as bunk... then I'd realized that I'd never seen a male one.
So, uh... Is it true then?

The calico gene and the penis gene are mutually exclusive.

Male calicos do exist. but they're rare because their sex genes code as XXY. Coat color in cats is a sex-linked trait.

People with the same affliction have Klinefelter's Syndrome.

Brown Tabby is the superior color.

This anonymous speaks the truth.

you could get a male but it would have to be pretty damn mutant or fuck ups during crossing over

Males are usually fucked up Chimeras, and yes that is a real condition and yes it means they have genes of two or more cats inside them. lrn2wikki

This is true. For further clarification, both black and orange are carried on the X chromosome, but only one can be carried at a time. This, a cat must have two X chromosomes to be a calico or tortoiseshell.

Yes, the males are sterile.

A chimeric male calico does not have to be sterile, just as long its genitalia developed from the XY-cells. Sometimes male torties are chimeras of two XY-eggs, and these have the best chance of being fertile. There's also the possibility of somatic mutation at the orange fur gene locus, which enables a fertile male to have both orange and black fur.

My neighbor's cat had kittens while she was away. I had to bury a calico one that was born dead, and it was in fact male.

yes - they reproduce asexually.

CATS COME FROM EGGS?

Everything comes from eggs. Even humans. Human eggs just hatch in the womb, so we never actually see them (unless you happen to work at an abortion clinic, like I do).

Our family cat had four kittens, every single one was different. So she had made it with several cats in the neighborhood. We had a male calico. He was the sweetest and also the most retarded cat ever. Wild birds would fly at him constantly, and he would roll over and just cry. I would have to always go save him.

We Kept all the kittens; its now like 14 years later.

most calico cats are females. there are some very rare instances where a male will be calico. at the angels for animals shelter in canfield ohio, their mascot is a male calico with 6 toes on his paws. that makes him about a one in a billion cat.

see page 8. his name is angelo.

The majority of calico cats are female. The gene that is passed along from the parents that makes a cat have the 3 different colors (calico) is a gene that is linked to being female. Occassionally and extremely rare a male calico is born; however, due to the calico gene being linked to female, if this happens then the male calico cat will be sterile (meaning it will not be able to ever produce sperm).

How about READING THE FUCKING THREAD BEFORE YOU POST?! Not only did you repeat what had already been said, you also ignored the bit explaining why sometimes male calicos are NOT sterile!

Goddamn retard.
