Anyone knows if is normal for hamster to eat their
owh poo? mine eats his own poo but I dont know if that bad or normal HELP!
>> Anonymous

Yup, it's normal. I've owned five hamsters so far and all of them have done it. Hamsters produce two different kinds of poop--the kind that's actually waste, and one kind that contains nutrients that couldn't be previously digested. The hamster will eat that poop so that it won't lose those nutrients that it passed. They're not the only animals that do this, but I don't know which others do.

w00t zoology major...

they will actually stack two different forms of their fecal matter. One stack will contain the poop that has been properly digested the other stack will have the poops that still has nutrient that their cesum was unable to digest. Most rodents do this.

ITT animals eating poo and why.

My dog tries to sneak into the litter box, bring a cat turd into the dining room, and eat it? Why does a dog want to eat cat poo?

How do they tell which shit is good for them?
>> Anonymous
>>71256

I don't know about in other animals, but in rabbits and guinea pigs the "good" poop has a very different texture from the "bad" poop. The cecals that they eat again are softer and wetter, and the poops that they don't eat are just hard little balls. Rabbits and guinea pigs usually take the cecals straight from their anus - you rarely see them. Never seen hamsters and such do it, though.

If it is still green gorillas eat their own poo too.

Is it possible for humans to retrieve nutrients by eating their own shit?
>> Anonymous
nope I think our poop is too dirty to eat

Carbonated drinks is NOT good for your hamsters. They cannot fart or burp and that could cause a lot of discomfort for your pet.
>> Anonymous
how do you know they cant fart or burp?

They've got a hole on either end, that gas is gonna come out somewhere.

Hamsters are rodents and rodents do not have the ability to pass gas. Look it up if you don't believe me.

I loled

How is that possible? I can't imagine something not being able to fart. Farting constitutes most of my enjoyment of life, what a terrible existence these creatures must lead.

All the pet rats I've known (yes, we had very deep relationships based on conversations and bonding) were crazy about beer. I mean complete suckers for it. I'd imagine they would've liked sugary stuff even more, like sodas and cider. Me and my friend would open a bottle of beer and give them the cap which they would grab with their leedle leedle hands and lick at the inside. But have no worries, we never gave them more than a drop or two of beer in liquid form. They probably would've died or something if given as much as they wanted...

I owned a rat once. While I was getting it checked up the vet told me to avoid treats that would make it gassy. I asked him why and he told me that rats and other small rodents don't have the ability to pass gas.
