I'm lol'ing so hard at that cat right now. My own cat doesn't like catnip, so it's fun seeing what it does to them.
>> Female.
my male cat only eats the catnip and has no reaction.
My female wigs out, chews her tail, and bites anything near her. But she has the exact same reaction to a bag of individually wrapped live saver pepp-o-mints.

Although no one knows exactly what happens in the cat's brain, it is known that the chemical nepetalactone in catnip is the thing that triggers the response. Apparently, it somehow kicks off a stereotypical pattern in cats that are sensitive to the chemical. The catnip reaction is inherited, and some cats are totally unaffected by it. Large cats like tigers can be sensitive to it as well.

The reaction to catnip only lasts a few minutes. Then the cat acclimates to it, and it can take an hour or two away from catnip for the cat to "reset." Then, the same reaction can occur again. Very young kittens and older cats seem less likely to have a reaction to catnip.

er correction to the above poster - tigers are not susceptible to nepetalactone - mature lions are, but the cubs arent, as a zookeeper I found juniper bush to have a similar effect on our tigers. While the catnip made all our lions stoned and fall into a 7-lion furpile. was fun to see.

pic not related - cute baby RT-lemur instead ;)

Catnip never worked on my roommate's cat. Toothpaste, however, worked amazingly well. It seems catnip is a mint, and this cat perhaps reacted to the menthol? I sort of accidentally discovered this when I noticed the cat would wake up me up every night freaking out over my lips.

The best toy the cat had for a while was a curled-up twist-tie covered in toothpaste.

True story.
>> Anonymous
When I was a kid I gave my cat some catnip, it proceeded to lie on it's back, dangling off the side of the stairs, flailing frantically with its front paws at god knows what.

Then it fell off the edge.

Didn't hurt itself, but I've been wary about giving any to cats ever since. Looked just like a drug trip.
