A variety of reasons I could think of, some cultural, some based off of evolutionary biology. One explanation I heard was that when the ancestors of humanity were evolving in Africa, they had to contend with rather dangerous spiders/ancestral spiders, which resulted in an inherent revulsion towards spiders particularly being passed on to their descendants. I can't provide a citation, that's just off of my memory (though I could look if you really want) but that's one explanation I've heard.
