time-shared pets? Anonymous
i saw on cnn how time-shared pets are becoming popular, you buy a pet, but instead of buying it yourself you buy a part of it together with others, and then you have it a few days a week or one week of the month or whatever shedule you agree on, sounds really smart, it gets cheaper that way and no problems with vacations and stuff as long as not all pet share owners have the same shedule, and it gets a lot cheaper to be a pet owner when you can split the food and medic bills with others!

anyone tried that already? was it as great as it sounds?

It sounds terrible. Imagine the psychological effect that would have on animal. What if one family is abusive? what if the animal gets in an accident and needs treatment, but one "owner" refuses?

It's a huge mess. There are some things that sound like great ideas until you really think it through: communism, a watergun filled with gasoline being used as a flame thrower, etc

Some pets can adapt well to different owners, it would be like a big family having a pet, could even be extra great exiting lifestyle and fun for the pet!

And what of those pets that cannot adapt well to different owners hmmm? For once I hope PETA causes a huge stink about the stupidity of this

I think that it has now been established that its not a very good idea to time share pets. Think how it would work with children-shared costs, and its not like its uprooting them or anything. I wouldn't want to give my cat away to others for a day unless i had to.

But you have to consider the human side of it, many could need or want a pet for whatever reasons, but can't or don't need it full time, so time share could have lots of great possibilities.

The whole notion smacks of "pets r itemz, not aminals lulz!".

What if X-Kitty is scared of men? And every Wednesday-Saturdaty Kitty is shoved into a beardo's apartment?

If you can't look after an animal, you don't get one. JESUS CHRIST, it's not hard.

Horses have been shared by multiple persons for ages. Same thing with some specially trained dogs. Why wouldn't it work the same with other animals.

Horses live out in fields most days, not in a house with new furniture, smells and fairly constant contact with humans all day long.

could be awesome, you could try out all sorts of exotic and unusual pets without risk, and also solve the problems with abandoned cats and unwanted pets!

If more people shared one animal that would mean less pets adopted.

I think the problem is less about different owners and more about a stable environment for the animal. They need to have their own territory and a stable home to feel safe in, switching houses constantly would be stressful. Although it would probably work better for something like a large friendly dog rather than a cat. All in all it's a stupid idea and very selfish with little thought to the pet's welfare. Like the person above said, if you can't take care of an animal don't get one.
