Hey, /an/, my first time here...

Alright, so right now I have this crazy idea about getting a cat. I just started living on my own, and taking care of a pet is probably the last thing I should be worried about, but I don’t care. I really want a cute kitty.

My family never owned a pet and I don’t know much about them. So what are some things I should know about cats? You guys know any helpful sites?

It's fairly easy. Get a litter box, a kitty bed, a litter scoop, litter, a food and water dish, some little mouse toys, and something for the kitty to scratch on. Make sure the kitty is taken to a vet right after you get it, if the shelter you adopt it from doesn't already provide their shots and/or spay/neutering. Make sure you get both. After that, just show the kitty love and attention and make sure to play with it everyday so it doesn't get bored. Cats are fairly self-suficient. Just feed and water it and then clean the litter box once per day, and it should be just fine. Most cats can be litter trained in under a couple of hours. (way easier than house training a dog.) Be sure to get it treated for fleas and worms as well. The vet should be able to give you more information on taking care of kittens, and usually give out a book on kitten care and tell you what kinds of food are best. Good luck ^_^

Ah, why not trying to train your cat do use the toilet?

The trick is simple, it just uses the concept of adaptation.
Put the litter box near the toilet, and leave the door open. Your cat needs to get used to the bathroom. Then, add some telephone guides below it. Wait another week. Add more. Do this until the litter box is at the same height than the toilet. Then put the litter box on the toilet. Wait some more days and remove it, or if it fits, put it inside the toilet. The cat needs to get used to standing on the toilet. Then start removing litter (as weeks go) until there's none. And remove the litter box for once and for all.

If you didnt' get the idea. Here's a vid I found. Don't worry, its explained the same way.

Have fun!

Oh, if anyone knows how to train your cat to flush the toilet. That'd be awesome.

Get two so they can play keep eachother company when you're not there or trying to sleep. (no, this does not effect how much they will bond to you). If you get one kitten be warned it will enter the "big kitten that plays rough" phase about 6-7 months onward. Some people don't expect this and flip out when they've got a cat-sized kitten tearing up their house at night. Many assholes returned cats to my shelter becuase of this, in fact we switched to a 2-kitten policy because it was such a problem. Please consider it :)
