If I get 2 guinea pigs and both are male, would they get along together?

If not, and I have to get 2 females...do they menstruate or anything? Never really been an animal person so I have no fucking clue, but I know that sometimes dogs do, and I don't want blood everywhere.

Low on money, so we'd be getting a cheaper cage from petsmart or something. Do they really need one of the huge cages to be happy, or would one of the cheaper ones (in the hundred dollar range or so) be enough to hold 2?

And the last and most stupid question....I don't suppose they can be trained at all to use a litter box of some sort? I know they're a bit renowned for their excreting abilities, so I don't expect so.

A guinea pig is probably not the right pet for you.

That seems to be the case for every pet.

regardless, I still want to know.

If you can't afford a pet, don't get one, period. Wait until you have the funds to care for it properly.

We have the funds to take care of it, just not get a giant luxurious mansion for it.

I want a pet, I'm not the type that would just get it solely for the cuteness factor of it. I would want it to be happy and I'd take care of it and all, it's not like I'd be neglecting it.

Honestly, I had two male guinea pigs about 2 years back, and they were brothers from birth, the only way you can get 2 males.
in the wild, guinea pigs actually travel in large herds with one very lucky male, and if they come into contact with another male, they will fight to the death.
so if you want to get two males, go for it, they will be fine together so long as they've never smelled a female before

Well I heard they only sell males at petsmart...would getting two of those be fine?
>> sure! Jake362
That make sense that they would only sell males, as a female would whip them all in a blood-frenzy.
If you happen to go this option, i would still recommend trying to get brothers, as i think they would share a closer bond.
Also, as far as the cage situation goes, we had one the the big two story ones and it was fun to watch them explore the first couple weeks, but after a month or so they ended up chilling on the ground floor anyways, so if your on a tight budget don't worry about it.
Third thing i suppose, would be for the excrement, we simply covered the floor of their cage with linoleum, and on top of that cedar wood chips, and it was fairly easy to clean every week, so long as the guinea pigs have a place to hide while you are doing this.
hope this helps P-=

first of all, if you are absolutely set about getting guinea pigs, get them from a shelter. please. if there happen to be none at the shelters near you, wait until they get some in. and yes, for what it's worth, they do sell females at regular pet stores. obviously (or hopefully) not in the same cage as males.

guinea pigs do not menstruate, but they come into heat every few weeks. the worst they do is try to hump each other, though this could lead to a little scuffle/fight which should end in a few seconds.

pigs need. NEED. a big cage. do not buy one from a store, period. make your own: http://www.guineapigcages.com/

some can be litter trained, but mostly for peeing; they tend to poop everywhere, but it's not a big deal because their poops are small and very easy to clean. i keep my two girls on fleece bedding because it's a lot easier to clean than traditional chip bedding. i vacuum the cage daily and wash it weekly - you will have to do that, too, if you don't want the cage to become a festering pile of pigshit.

they should be given time outside the cage to run around, not in your yard, but in a safe room in your house. also, they need to be fed fresh vegetables/fruit every day along with a steady pile of timothy hay and timothy pellets. it is very important that they get enough vitamin C in their diet.

also, you should not ever have guinea pigs if you have a cat or a dog. there is just too much of a risk of the cat/dog getting at the pigs.

Actually it depends on the store. They are either all-male or all-female stores. You can usually have them tell you where the closest female store is if you want some females. They might even be able to bring it to your store, also, if you ask.
