So, /an/, My dog isn't fixed, he's a mix of something... we think greater swiss mountain dog-something else, we're not really sure.

Anyway, he growls a lot. At the cats around the house, but the cats follow him and he cleans and plays with them etc etc. He growls when people are petting him, but his tail is wagging like he's happy and if you ask him where his ball is he instantly stops and finds the ball and wants to play.

He's pretty obedient, you say sit, he does, lay he does, shake etc etc.

People tend to be super scared of him, but he's never bit anything--hell, he even had two hamsters for the longest. He'd herd them back into their cages when they got out, but growl at them.

so what's up, does he need to be fixed or are people vaginas. I'm going with vaginas.
>> Anonymous
He needs side mounted machine guns.

But other than that he sounds fine, I had a dog that growled at everything that moved, and some stuff that didn't but he was the sweetest dog on earth. As long as he doesn't show any sign of being violent then it's fine.

Your dog is not a Swissie mix. He is a mutt. Saying your dog is a specialty breed mix is like saying you have aspergers when you just read the fucking wikipedia article.

Get your dog fixed, because there is always a chance he might run off to knock up some bitch. There is nothing wrong with the growling as long as it's just growling.

Oh jeez, shut the hell up

I think that you should get him fixed, not because I think it will make him stop growling but because it's just a better idea.

Spay or neuter your pet!

He must be purring.

Mutts come in infinite variations. It's easier and better to refer to them as the breed they look like most, not forgetting to mention "mix", of course.

Agreed.

Looks like an australian cattle dog mix-- and there's nothing wrong with that, either. Anyway, I fostered a dog who would bare his teeth whenever he was happy. My current dog growls when he's excited. I guess it's just a quirk, and not a sign he's going to snap and rip your throat out someday.

I think the point of annoyance wasn't so much that it was a specified breed mix, but more that it was a rare breed mix. Greater swiss mountain dogs are pretty unusual, so the likelihood of them being mixed with something is really slim. It's retarded when people try to make their mix sound special by throwing in a rare breed that they vaguely resemble, like "check out my lundhund mix everybody!" when it's just a small fox-eared dog.

That's why it pissed me off, anyway.

This.

There are some breeds that are extremely common, and it is entirely possible for a "lab/chow mix" to actually have labrador or chow chow ancestors. It is extremely unlikely that a dog from the local animal rescue is a "pharoh/american eskimo mix" because it's thin, has white fur and big ears.

The thing people forget is that dog breeds were selectively breed to act, look, and perform a certain way. The traits that they were bred for first showed up in a particular population as a mutation. Those dogs were seeds that grew into a breed. Your dog may have the same gene that causes a certain characteristic of a breed without actually being related to any dog of that breed.

This is my dog. Everywhere we go, people ask about my 'brown catahoula' or 'cur-pit mix'. And I tell them his mother was a mutt, his father was a hound, and he's fucking proud to be a hound mutt.

I should note that it's perfectly fine to call your dog a 'hound mix' or 'terrier mix'. General terms are great. If you say you have a terrier, they know you have a small, active dog. If you say you have a cattle dog they know you have a stock medium sized herding-style dog. Even "Roxie is a black and tan long haired hound" is better than "Roxie is gordon setter mix" when you have no idea who Roxie's parents actually were.

Yeah, gowling at everything's a bad thing. People who are scared of your dog aren't fucking idiots.

I should note that the baby's head was marked on long before the dog ever saw it. Actually, I'm pretty sure that head is buried in my yard somewhere, maybe with just an arm or leg still attached. Also, that blanket goes on the couch before the dog does, because it's a good couch and the dog is dirty, goddamnit.

On topic..

Some dogs growl rather than bark. Some cats never yowl or meow, but purr constantly. Some humans stutter, some have a lisp. There is a huge range of vocalizations for each species, and some simply choose to only make certain ones(or are unable to make certain ones). If a dog growls when other dogs bark, but does not show any other signs of aggression, then there is nothing wrong with the dog. Now, if the dog growls when approaching someone with their tail tucked and fur on end.. then yes, it is aggression.

A kitten we have has begun hissing and growling while she's playing. It's because our older cats do this when she plays with them and she doesn't realize it means they're angry, I think.

It's lolzable

My dog, a tiny-ass mutt, always has her tail tucked in. Even when she is extremely happy and bouncing up and down. Is that a problem?

Aww, what a naive little thing.

The primary symptom of Aspergers is telling people on the internet that you have Aspergers.

Well he does look something like a Catahoula. I see you're teaching him to eat babies. That's a philosophy I can support!
The OP's dog is probably growling all the time because he knows you've been to 4chan. Dogs can sense when there's something horribly wrong, you know. He's warning you not to rape children or he'll rip your throat out.
