A few days ago I swatted my cat on the backside lightly to get her to move out of the way of the computer monitor, and noticed that brown liquid flew out of her butthole when I did so. I assumed it was anal leakage, so I have been trying to monitor her for the past few days, but she's not leaking anything and wherever she sits is still clean. It appeared to just be an involuntary reaction when I swatted her.

Should I be concerned at all? She's not sick, only about nine or ten years old, and is still in good spirits. Last and only time I saw anything was on Sunday when this happened.

You probably tapped an anal gland. Not a problem, but if its so full that you got emission by a light swat you might want to ask a vet about it.

I called the vet earlier and they said that it might be a recurring discharge and that my cat just licks herself clean. While that's possible, my cat is usually always within eyesight and really only after using the litter box does she do that.

Sounds like it's definately full anal glands. Just get your vet to empty them and your cat should be fine. Mine gets full glands about once a year and needs to have them done, it's not common in cats for it to be reoccuring but it can happen once in their life and is pretty common.
