I have a friend who is offering a 70 gallon aquariam tank, complete with stand, filter, rocks, decore, etc. for $300.

Would it be wise to buy this? I plan on keeping 3-4 piranha in it.

Pic somewhat related.

I got my 75 gal off craigslist with everything for $150. I would see if you can talk him down, or look around some more.

Alright, I'll do this. I don't think I can get this guy below $250, I'll look around.

That wouldn't sound bad if it was in decent condition.

I was kind of an idiot and bought everything brand new. A 75 gallon tank, with everything included I probably spent almost a grand.

What kind of stuff does this setup come with? 300 could be a very reasonable price for a 75gal if it is nearly new, with a good filter, etc.

On the other hand, if you're getting a 10-year-old tank that's scratched up, with a crappy filter, then it's no so good of a deal.

Another note: Piranhas require a LOT of filtration. Make sure that the filter you're getting is a very good one, preferably rated for a much larger tank than a 75. If it's not, you need to pick up another or a second filter.

Yeah, I plan on using two filters, one thats included with the tank and one I'll buy. Thats what a forum I'm a member of reccomended for piranha.

The tank is three years old and in good condition. I've been watching Graig's List and havnt noticed anything yet.

Isn't that a little small for 3-4 piranha ? Those thing gets HUGE.

i would recommend two filters if your going to keep piranhas, the amount of pollution feeding them will be high, external and internal filters are advised to keep to clean as possible

also careful to not over feed them as they will keep eating and in turn pollute the tank, also clean out any food after feeding them as soon as possible

Only if they're in the wild. 70 is about the minimum for 4, and a good size for 3.

feed them raw shrimp, whitefish meat, and carnivorous fish food. these food pollute the water less.

and do a 50% water change every week.

Really? Are you sure you're not just cramping them into a small tank, or are you getting a smaller breed? I've usually heard that 70g tanks will house one piranha comfortably, MAYBE two, but definately not 3-4?

General rule of thumb is 20 gallons for one piranha. So 3 would be fine., but not four. They would probably end up getting too terretorial and kill the fourth.

That depends on the species. Piranhas from the genus Pygocentrus will get along fine in groups, and won't go after each other unless they are very limited on food or space. This genus includes the most common "pet" piranhas, the red belly and the caribe.

On the other hand, Piranhas from the Serrasalmus genus are extremely territorial and cannot be kept together unless you have a HUGE tank (several hundred gallons) with a lot of hiding spaces, and even then it's a gamble.
