hi /an/,

i adopted my cat about 5 months ago. she quickly became very close to me. this is my first pet i've had since i've been living on my own and it has been awesome. none of my animals before liked to cuddle or sleep in bed with me. she would follow me from room to room and sit nearby. whenever i was in a room without her and the door was closed, she would meow (which sounded like she was yelling "Herrow, Herroww") until i let her in.
a few weeks ago she started to seem very congested, had trouble breathing, occasionally a runny nose. i took her to the vet and he thought she had an upper respiratory infection and gave her an antibiotic. the antibiotic didn't do anything, and she became sluggish and lost her appetite completely. i brought her back to the vet today and he noticed that she was jaundiced and that he had to run blood and urine tests. he also injected fluids. she became even worse when i brought her home, she could barely even stand up on her own. now she just lays in one position wherever i put her, and does nothing else. her breathing is strained and she still has a yellowish mucus coming out of her nose sometimes. i find out the results of the test tomorrow morning, and the doctor said that he didn't expect them to be very good.
i love my cat and the thought of losing her so quickly is killing me.

i'm writing this because i wanted to know, have any of you cat owners ever experienced symptoms similar to this with your cat? if so, what was the diagnosis?

I've never experienced this, but my thoughts are with you.

My cat had similar symptoms after she gave birth, from a loss of vitamins/minerals.. She would not stand, move.. to weak! she was like that for a few days, she had a fever. I got some antibiotics, and forced her to drink some vitamin rich kitten milk.. she was better after a week!

I also hand fed her babies while she was sick, and for most of their infancy :D!

PS: Those bandages on her were cause she had open wounds in her flesh... lots of puss.. Sick kitty.

My cat had similar symptoms to those a few years ago, he turned out to be in the late stages of feline leukemia. The symptoms can very from cat to cat with that too, since it's basically an immune deficency disease. If you've never had your cat tested for it before, or you cat has been exposed to untested cats, he/she could have it. Frustratingly, there's no cure, and treatment is useless. Once they show symptoms, it's pretty much over. Things can go south quickly too with Feline Leukemia, my cat was fine one day (he's been eating less, but I didn't think much of it), then the next day, I came home to find him under the bed unable to move, dehydrated, and with some off mucusey discharge. I hope so much that's not what your kitty has, it's so hard to loose a pet, especially one you bonded with so much. We got my cat with Fe-leuk knowing he had it, I saw no reason to put down a then healthy kitten just because he wouldn't live that long. Even if you know, you can't prepare, you just can't. Best of luck, hopefully it's something treatable!

The symptoms sound like common cat flu, which is what my cat had. However, if it looks like your cat isn't recovering from it, it's possible she has either FIV or feline leukaemia as an underlying condition that's preventing her from fighting off the cat flu. There are vaccinations for those, but neither are treatable once your cat has them, just like its human counterparts.

Here's to hoping it's just cat flu with no underlying conditions, OP. My cat (a shelter cat too) was REALLY sick with the cat flu back at the shelter, and when I adopted him, I had to feed him two different antibiotics. Cat flu can leave the cats pretty bad at times.
