I had a gorgeous white mouse once, that had been a feeder mouse (what a waste that would have been, if she had just been snake food). She was really smart and she liked hanging out on my shoulder. Whenever I cleaned her house, I would put her in one of those little plastic critter carriers on the dining room table. She was always very calm, so I always left the top of the critter carrier open. I had done this many times. I was stupid.
One day, I was right next to her cleaning her tank, when suddenly my cat appeared out of no where and snatched her out of the carrier with one paw and made off with her at top speed. I caught up to the cat, pried her mouth open and got my mouse, who seemed to be fine. She died two days later anyway. :(((((
The moral of my story is: cats are evil, so keep your mice the fuck away from them. I agree with keeping the cage low to the ground... it'll be easier for them to bust it open if they can knock it off of something.
