Three Gendered Snake Anonymous
I could've sworn I've seen a documentary once about this one species of snake located on a small island off the coast of South America (I think) that had three genders.

Anyone else know of this? I was wondering what the name of the species was.

THERE ARE ONLY TWO GENDERS YOU FUCKING RETARD

No shit.

I remembered they said it was because the snakes lived only on this one island, a genetic mutation popped up, and they gained a third gender.

It was years since I saw it.

Not necessarily!

Is it possible that you're thinking of a mutation that would cause a high proportion of intersex individuals? Because the only multiple gender organisims I can think of right now are various types of fungus or moss.

It might've been just that. A species that only exists on this small island, that has a third gender that wasn't viable; it probably was just a very high chance mutation.

Either way, they called it a third gender in the documentary, probably for just the ease of it.

I still wish I knew the name of the species

If the third gender wasn't a viable one, then I'd say that it probably was a way of refering to intersex individuals. I know that intersex people often refer to themselves as being third gender.

Was it this island you were refering to, by any chance?

Oh that's it, thank you.

And yeah, Wiki confirms it's just an intersex population

Typing in the species name comes up with a handfull of tidbits that say that pregnant intersex individuals have been found. These were females with functioning ovaries, along with a rudimentary hemipenis. In-ter-es-ting.
