"In Northern Gaul all lampreys have seven spots on their right jaw like the constellation of the Great Bear: these spots have golden colour while the fish are still alive, but disappear when it dies. Vedius Pollio, a knight of Rome and member of the Council under the late Emperor Augustus, used this creature as a means of proving his cruelty: he threw condemned slaves into tanks of lampreys, not because land-beats where unable to carry out the punishment, but because only with the lamprey could he watch a man being completely torn to to pieces as it happened."
