Hi, /an/,

This is my first time here. Let's skip the rest of the introduction...

I have a goldfish (pic related). When we got it, it seemed about normal. We've fed it regularly, cleaned the tank out and changed water occasionally, but lately it seems to freak out and dart around in its tank whenever it sees anything outside.

Is there something wrong with it?

Well, for starters... if that's it's enclosure, then it's WAAAAAY too small.

General rule of thumb: 1 gallon of water for every 1 inch of fish.
Also, goldfish are messy fish. They're one of the acceptions to the rule. 5 gallons for every 1 goldfish. If it keeps living in that tank, it will poison itself with it's own waste. You should also have a filter with the goldfish...

That being said, your goldfish would probably freak out less if it didn't feel so trapped in such a small tank. If it had more room to swim, it wouldn't feel so exposed.

Aside from the size of the tank. There is probably a build up of ammonia, nitrites or nitrates. Since there are no live plants the chemicals will probably spike in one way or another.

Feed less, add some shitty real aquatic plants, get a bigger tank and when you get a proper 10 gallon tank get him a friend.

Or if you're cheap buy some water dechlorinater and do a daily 50% water change. Thats essentially what breeders do in bare tanks with overstocked fish.

yeah we have an air pump, and i clean out the water weekly (i made sure to look up the stuff about fishies before i got him and what not)

and he has a gallon
+ of water in that thing D:> i know because i have to prep water when i change it every week D:>

we have had him a while and he used to come up to greet us when he was fed and what not, but now he seems to not want to check us out as much

not sure if its something we did near him, or if it might have to do with feeding schedule

sincerely
wtf my fish isnt friendly any more

You must have missed all the shit about 1-2 gallon tanks not being suitable for goldfish in any way, shape, or form.

the size of the tank is also determined by how often it is cleaned, water changed ect

Oh wow, a whole GALLON of water! For a goldfish. You know people only keep goldfish in bowls because they are cheap fish, right? I figured common sense would indicate you probably shouldn't keep a large cold-water carp in a bowl unless you expect it to die soon.

And no filter?

Imagine sitting in a glass closet, and having to stew in your own feces and urine until someone hosed you off once a week. But hey, it's a whole closet, and they even give you a bit of air to breathe!

I suspect you either lie or fail at google. This is the first link that comes up.

10 gallon tank minimum. A good filter and some plants.
That'll fix it.

You have roughly a gallon of water for a fish that is probably between one and two inches right now. Judging by the picture, it looks like a calico ryukin or "fancy fantail". That fish, if it lives that long, will grow at least five inches long, not including length of tail.

The bigger a goldfish grows, the more waste it produces, and usually more often. //A fish will NOT just "grow to the size of its enclosure".// You need to get a ten-gallon at the least, and as another anon suggested, a friend added would help him feel safer too.

You also must get a filter. If you don't, don't come crying to us when your fish dies. For that matter, don't go crying to whatever fucktard sold you a goldfish and a one-gallon 'tank' in the same transaction. He hates you too.
