New Kitten Anonymous
Dear /an/,

My sister and I plan on getting a kitten in the next few months and need your advice. Should we get a tomcat or a pussycat? How are their temperaments different? And differing health concerns that we should be aware of?

Thanks!!

I'm assuming you're neutering/spaying them?

Anyway, in my experience, toms tend to be more affectionate and more "house cats". Queens are more stand offish, independant and less likely to be around the house for long. Admittedly this is from personal experience which is restricted to neutered Persians and Maine Coons.

So what are you looking for from this cat? Lurve? Or just general cat ownership?

Pussycat doesn't mean girl cat.

lol though

Get a neutered male. They tend to be much more affectionate than any other type.

I've never experienced any difference in temperament between sexes, nothing which couldn't be attributed to different cats with different personalities anyway. As far as I'm concerned there's only one main difference. Male cats squirt, and even after the desexing process, it's possible they might continue this behaviour. Male cats are also insignificantly cheaper to desex because of ease of access, but that's about the only other difference I've run into.

Why would a boy cat be called a pussycat?

every female cat i've had has been a bitch. get a boy.

Do the normal thing and get if neutered/spayed and get the normal protective shots.

Also, name it Matt, whether it is male or female.

I've had plenty of cats and I'd say that if you want a female cat, let it have ONE litter of kittens, THEN have it desexed, and you'll find she becomes the softest ball of fluff you could imagine.
Becoming a mother really does calm a female cat down a LOT.

As for male cats, just have it desexed and you'll have no problems. If you don't desex him however, he'll spray EVERYWHERE and that stuff will be strong enough to peel the paint from the walls. No joke.

That advice given, the female cat I have right now, Cleo, is incredibly sweet and was not given the chance to have a litter.

Sometimes it's just down to luck I guess.

Oh HELL no. That is just your cat's personality. I have five cats, one of which wasn't neutered quickly enough and she had a litter of kittens. She was sweet before, but during pregnancy and after giving birth, she was and is completely angry and neurotic. She hates everyone and everything now, especially her kittens. We neutered all nine of her kittens right away and the three what we kept are nice and loving pets. I think what matters most is each cat's particular personality, but neutering definitely mellows them out.
