my cat had kittens today while i was out. she had them on my bed, and now that i'm back, i tried moving the kittens into the box i set up for her/them. she followed them into the box, but about a 30 seconds later the mom starts crying and ran to me and jumped onto the bed, leaving her kittens. the kittens start crying and she was clearly torn about whether to stay with me or go back to them. i'd rather the kittens not die, so i brought them onto the bed and mom was calm again. how can i get the cat to stay in the box with the kittens? i want to sleep but will undoubtably crush kittens because i roll around too much

Sleep in the box

Hmm... that's tough.

Can you keep the kittens in the box and put the box on the bed? You may have to sleep kind of strangely in the bed if it's not big enough.
Perhaps you could all sleep on the floor together.

Why not roll up a sleeping bag and some pillows, and sleep on the floor by the bed?
If its for kittens, you shouldn't mind sleeping on the floor for a while. At least until you find a better solution.

Since she just gave birth she's still agitated. She probably chose the bed because it was the safest place in the house from her point of view.
Move her back in the box and stay next to her, petting and ressuring her. She needs to realize that the box is a good place to stay and that you won't leave her alone. When she's settled you can go to sleep. Keep the box next to the bed and pet her ocasionally.

an update: she was apparently still pregnant and just taking a 12+ hour break before finishing birth. hopefully this will clear up once she's really done. but on the plus side: more kittens!

I agree, but she wouldn't do it anywhere else despite my best efforts.

lol. Well, your cat clearly loves you and your bed. Require pics of each individual kitten sometime when they aren't feeding.

When my cat had kittens, it was tricky because there was a lot of people and a dog in the house. She had them underneath the couch, so I moved them as soon as I saw them to just behind the couch but in the open, barely a foot from where they were born. Within the first day of their life, I moved them onto the couch, and then into the dining room, then the hallway, then my bedroom, then into the corner of my room where I wanted to keep them. Each time I moved them I would give Momcat a small amount of her favourite food with the plate pushed very close to the kittens. When she was finished eating she would wash the kittens and lay down to feed them. It's her natural instinct to nourish the young when she receives nourishment, so just try moving them little by little until she gets used to it. Because within the first day our Momcat got used to the fact that people were going to do things to her kids, she wouldn't panic if you took one kitten away, unless it started crying for more than a few minutes. I still have contact with four of her five kittens, and they're amazingly social to anyone who walks into the house, even if they stink like another animal.

Remember, if you ask /an/ to name any of the kittens they will automatically be named biscuit.
