I work alot and have excess cash recently.

I want to treat myself and buy myself a badass parrot. Something very affectionate and preferably big. What do you think? I have 1200$

I think you should invest that shit in a foreign market mutual fund. In ten years when that parrot is dead, and you wish you had an extra three grand, you'll be kicking yourself.

Get the free joys of human companionship, and enjoy an early retirement with your saved funds.

In 10 years, $1200 compounded once annually with a return of 10% yields $3112.49.

You have obviously never taken an economics class. True it doesn't account for inflation (it would take 14 years at 3% inflation), or the possibility that a single fund isn't likely to achieve 10% over a short life of 10 years, but in principle investing the money in the market will give you greater returns than a parrot.

he's talking about how long big birds can live...

You've been misinformed about how long parrots live. They often live longer than humans. Buying a parrot is like getting a tattoo that you have to feed and house; you'll have it for the rest of your life, and it really, really sucks if you get one that isn't any good.

Parrots also can develop behavioural problems - they can become attached to only one person, and therefore if you get a significant other they will attack that person. Or they can be destructive and have all sorts of other crazy hangups.

I'm not trying to discourage you, but you need to be aware that they might not necessarily be affectionate. Also, Anonymous is right when they say parrots live for longer than 10 years. They're a very big commitment, even bigger a commitment than a dog or cat.

Best of luck :) Post again if you do get one in the future!

But...if you don't like it, you can always drown it....its just a bird, its not like it has a soul.
