2 better than 1? Anonymous
hai /an/, this was the place that made me want a bunny for a pet till I saw the 2chan chin post, now i know what pet i want. I was wondering though, do chinchilla's like to be around each other or will 1 be happy with me playing with him. I know my parents 2 dogs love each other and if one ever goes to the vets the other is depressed. So do chinchilla's share this love for friendship with another chin, or will he be happier alone.

you can keep chinchillas alone or in pairs. They do get along in groups, so it's not like hamsters where you have to keep them individually. They do just fine alone though, so you don't HAVE to get two.

If you do get two, make sure you get an unusually large cage. They can squabble if you keep them in too confined of an area.

They are sooooooooo soft, my god. You have no idea.
Never get them wet, though, get them a dust bath in ... whatever kind of dust. What was it, guys, talc?

You can buy "chinchilla dust bath" at most pet stores. It is made from diatomacious earth or very fine clay.

my chinchilla used to live with 3 others in a massive gage, due to circumstances they couldnt be kept together anymore so i only have one now. If at all possible pick either one or a few together and keep it that way.

The one i have now was so lonely i had to give her a stuff toy to keep her company. She would sleep beside it and play with it until it got used to being alone. It really helps if you play with her daily and/or keep her close to you in her cage (mine LOVES to watch TV and/or the computer when im watching a movie/playing games) as they are pretty intelligent for a rodent and can go insane from boredom. They like to play with stuff with thier hands so give them food that they have to pick up to eat (sunflower seeds). Basically give it shit to do else it will go crazy.

If you have one, it will bond with you and get sad if you leave, but if you have two, they will bond with each other and wont give a shit about you.

Get two, opposite sex.

Then you can wait a while and you'll have a coatsworth.

They are very social and need alot of interaction. So if you do not have alot of tiem to devote to them it is best to get two so they can keep each other company. they are a bit of work to care for they have very sensitive stomachs and can end up with some serious problems if not fed a good diet. They need chinchilla pellets and fresh dried alfalfa or timothy hay everyday. also plenty of water. They can get wet but its best if they don't, it they do get wet say they jump in the toilet or something you have to get them dry quick so they dont get sick towel dry em and use a hair dryer only in short bursts if they tolerate it they are sensitive to temp changes they have to be kept in a cool enviorment no hotter than 77 or they could die of heat stroke.

Their fur is SUPER thick. You see how they look like chubby little guys? Well, that's just the fur. Their body is much more rat-shaped than chubby..it's just that with an inch thick "fur coat" all over they look fairly round.

Anyway, if they get wet all that fur will trap the water. If you don't dry them out right away they could very easily get sick or worse. A chinchilla getting wet is a bit of an emergency. Keep in mind they are native to a dry, mountainous area. Aside from drinking water, water and chinchillas is a bad mix!

It annoys me we can't get these in Australia.

The claim is they'll get into the wild and cause havoc but this is fucking Australia...they'll die in droves every summer.

If I have a really gentle and lazy cat, could it coexist with a chinchilla?

I'd still keep the chin in a cage when I'm not in the room, of course.

Perhaps, it depends on the cat of course. I'm sure you've seen the photos on the web of cats playing nice with rabbits, guinea pigs, and various small rodents. If your cat is like that, then it will probably be fine.
