Noise scares my cat, but for some reason only certain noises. He might jump when a lorry or something rolls past our house but he doesn't mind too much.

But when he hears shooting from miles away (hunting etc) he gets really frightened and hides in my bed. It's not even that loud compared to traffic. Why do cats do this?

Probably because the shooting sound is more abrupt and startling than the steady hum of traffic.

I'm sure that sounds we hear have a much larger range of sound vibration than is audible to us. Like how we can't hear a dog whistle. Maybe gunshots have a much larger amount of sound that we don't hear that your cat does
