There was a stray cat that came around my house for about six years that went through something like that, and I too have undeveloped film with pictures of him on it. He was the reason I started doing animal rescue. I haven't thought about him for a long time, even though he's buried in my back yard.
Originally, he belonged to a family a few houses down from mine. He was orange and yellow, and looked like an angora, except for the coat. Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if he was a purebred or direct cross, they were rich folks that just didn't care. Sweet and gentle, he would follow people around, crying for attention.
When they moved and he stayed, he pretty much moved into my garage. I took him to the vet (well, my grandmother did, I was like 10, but I paid for it by mowing lawns). Anyway, he would stay for a few months, then leave for a year or so, and come back and stay for a few months. Always when he came back he looked terrible.
One summer, he came back smelling terrible with horrible abscesses all along his back. There is a rotting death smell that comes from dying animals that is just.. one should never have to smell it. I had no idea what it was at the time, and by then I was having a lot of problems with my lupus, and was fairly inactive because of it, so I couldn't work and take care of him. We tried repeatedly to catch him and bring him to the pound, but he would run away and hide, and after a dozen or so attempts, he wouldn't even come near me. He would just sit on my windowsill, watching me with this horrible look of hurt on his face. It seemed like he knew he was dying, and that I was his only friend, and I'd try to catch him and betray him. Eventually he died on my neighbor's porch, and I buried him in my back yard. <3 Mouser
