SOUTH BURLINGTON -- After several years spent on the lam, sleeping in different houses every night and relying on strangers for handouts, Butterscotch has it made. Far from his humble beginnings as a kitten on the streets of Burlington, the cat spends his days in a leather chair in front of the fireplace of the Hawthorn Suites hotel.
He doesn't live there, he just visits -- from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, without exception, according to hotel staff.
Since Butterscotch was adopted from the Chittenden County Humane Society in December 2000, the cat's been leaving his home on Woodside Drive after breakfast, and walking across the yard to spend his days in the nearby hotel, several hundred feet away on Dorset Street.
The cat's owner, Patrick Benner, said he feeds his eight cats and Pomeranian dog every morning at 6 a.m., then opens the door so they can go outside and do their business. And every morning, all but his 14-year-old tabby return.
It seems Butterscotch has other business to attend to.
The cat usually spends his mornings sprawled over the counter at the front desk, then makes his rounds among guests during breakfast hours.

They're obviously feeding him at the hotel.

Probably feeding him better than the real owner too. Besides, why would he want to go back to a house with 7 other cats and a dog?
