you should also look up "hot spots" and see if it matches your problem. Sometimes an animal will get an itch and chew/scratch it a bit too much--like any scab or hairless patch, it gets itchy and causes more cratching and chewing. you can get some "Bitter Apple" from any pet store, dab it on the spots, and the animal will usually stop chewing on it and allow it to heal.
My dog tends to get a hot spot on his leg around Springtime each year for some odd reason. Every time I catch it, I Bitter Apple the spot several times a day and it goes away. (he hates it when he sees that bottle come out of the pantry tho X-D)
