You'll have to cut through them, unfortunately. I have a cat very similar to a Maine Coon (Ragamuffin) who gets knots sometimes, and what I do is this: get a fairly finetoothed metal comb and slide it under the knot so it serves as a shield between the knot and her skin, then use either small nail scissors or a seam ripper (this actually works really well) to get through the knot. Then just comb it out. Simple as that!
