Papillon defiantly!
I dislike dogs like pekingeses, so yappy.

Paps are loyal and are really considerate in my opinion, my pap lets little kids pat him on the face and if they pat him roughly, he just chills,

even though you can see he's a bit pissed off in his face. its so cute~

Papillon.
Known for being pretty intelligent, and they're very pretty dogs. Not yappy or anything. Pekinese have breathing issues due to their flat faces- and they're none too bright, I'd think. Also, you might get little girls stopping to pet your dog if you get a Papillon. People will look at you funny if you drag in a walking box covered in hair.
Seriously, Pekinese are butt fucking ugly.

bump for more oppinions

The pekingese we get in the clinic are always really vicious.

could be that nobody socializes them well, though. could be how they were bred, too. to like, jump out of the sleeves of the emperor and latch onto the offender's ankles.

The Papillon seems like the more durable of the two dogs.

I'm inclined to disagree; Papillons can be yappy. My friend had a papillon who was insanely yappy; she took him everywhere, socialized him, allowed him to run free at the horse ranch--basically never did anything that encouraged barking, and did everything that would prevent from that behavior from happening, and he STILL barked constantly. I know every dog is different, and it might have been his personality, but that was my experience with a papillon.

I believe you, NOT!

OP here. Do you honestly think every single pap out there is tempermentally sound? Some dogs are just neurotic no matter what you do. It probably came from some hick's back yard breeding project.

I'm still undecided about which breed. I've only met one nice peke and a bunch of nippy ones, where as I've met many sweet paps. However, I'm not really one for dogs with spindly little legs, they kinda gross me out. I hate short coated chihuahuas, Italian greyhounds, etc for that reason. The pap's spindlyness is mostly covered by long fur and they generally seem to have good personalities. Pekes are cuter and are more solidly built, which I prefer, but finding a freindly one is hard. Perhaps if I go to a dog show and meet some breeders I can find a nicer one?

Something had to have been in how he raised him, seriously. All the Papillon's I've seen were well-mannered dogs. People could even take them into the bookstore and expect no noise.

No breed is 100% un-yappable, but some are more likely to yap than others. Just like some breeds are more likely to nip at your heels, or chase any small animal.

My mom has a pekingese. Not day goes by that I don't think about killing it.
>> Anon
Pekingnese are severely inbred. Yes, I know, purebred and inbreeding go hand in hand. But the Pekes we have today are bred from a very small handfull of dogs smuggled from the palaces. The rest were killed off.
Flat faces come with a whole variety of ailments. My mom has a shorkie and a shih tzu. Dumb as fucking rocks, shorkie has the terrier attitude, hard to train, never shuts the fuck up, Shih eats it own shit right after she craps...Asian breeds seem to have trainability issues.

WHAT THE FUCK IS A SHORKIE?!?!

God DAMN I hate "designer" breeds. They're just fucking mutts with a big price tag. - -;

Ahem. Sorry. I like Papis. :3
>> Anon
Pekingese tend to catch colds very easily. Very difficult births. Prone to herniated disks and dislocated kneecaps. Trichaiasis (lashes growing inwards toward the eyeballs). Breathing problems and heart problems are also common.
Health wise, papillions seem to have universal dog ailments as their health concerns.
>> Anonymous
how the hell can you find a peke CUTE?
seriously, its the fugliest dog I've ever seen.
Just looking at its picture makes me know thats its yappy and bitchy.

A shorkie is a yorkshire terrier/shih tzu cross. Meanest fucking, dumbest damn mutt there is. And I agree wbout the designer dog bullshit.

>>192611
Pedigree doesn't mean shit. The above shorkie has a father who is a show dog, his pups have sold for $5000 acrossed the country...and he and his pups are all assholes. People swear by the damned breeder too.
I think with any dog it's a gamble on what you're getting. Ben is either friendly or aloof the first few times a stranger visits, eventually starts showing his true colors later, and is a total, vicious prick to his owners. I get weird looks when I tell people he bites when he's being friendly.

I recommend avoiding a dog that has hair that grows long and close to the eyes. It's nasty. One, you have to continuously keep cutting the shit away from its eyes, they seem to have constant drainage, which ferments in the hair around the eyes and stinks like shit, and they damage their eyes from irritation.
Non-shedding breeds, and long-haired flat faced breeds seem to have this problem. Yorkies, shih-tzus, pekes, maltese, poodles....meh.
We've had all those breeds except the peke (which we've helped cut the fur around the eyes for a neighbor). Yeah you can take them to a groomer, except for the fact that the body hair is still relatively short by the time the eye hair gets into their eyes. For example, my mom's yorkie is due for another eye clearing cut now, his body hair has barely grown.

If I went with the peke I'd keep it's fur clipped rather short. I actually hate the look of show pekes. This is what I'd want mine to look like.
>> Anonymous
Why anyone would want such a deformed animal is beyond me.
>> tigerfeather !CrwtTbFNxQ
>>192934
Actually, the Pekinese's face hair doesn't grow much. It generally stays short-haired.

Pekes = mean motherfuckers, lots of grooming bills
Papillons = barky, easy to break legs (such as jumping off the bed or couch)
>> Anon
>>192949
I think they're ugly no matter how long or short their fur is.
My family's are kept cut like that. And as I pointed out, it's constant grooming to keep the crap out of their eyes. Mom does her own and her yorkie is already going blind because of irritation. He's four. I'm waiting for the damned dog to spazz and her take his eye out with the scissors.
I'm waiting to see how long her shih tzu takes before she goes blind. A family friend has a shih and he has had multiple infections in his eyes to the point they destroyed his tear ducts.
I'd go with the papillion or pomeranian, smart dogs, they don't seem to take as much damned work to keep. Brush them. Wahlah.

Breakable legs depends on the line really. You'd be amazed the variance in size, shape, etc. I was looking to buy either a papillon or pomeranian. I found papillons the size of medium-sized dogs and AKC poms that looked like collies (roughly the size of a large sheltie). Anon needs to shop the market and find a dog that is sound in body and mind.
>> tigerfeather !CrwtTbFNxQ
>>193010
If the Pom was that big, then it did not conform to AKC standard. I know how much variation there is in a dog's genetics, but if the animal is not conforming to standard then it should NOT be bred. However, if someone's asking about a purebred dog, then I would hope to God that they are looking for something show quality. If they aren't, then why are they looking for a purebred to begin with? They should just hit the pound and find something that looks close enough.
>> Anonymous
papillon by far, pekinese are ugly and unhealthy.
>> Anonymous
>>193015

Per the AKC website: "The average weight of the Pomeranian is from 3 to 7 pounds, with the ideal weight for the show specimen being 4 to 6 pounds. Any dog over or under the limits is objectionable. However, overall quality is to be favored over size. "
"The Shetland Sheepdog should stand between 13 and 16 inches at the shoulder. "

Considering that a pomeranian has such a fluffy coat, it would seem that they could appear to be 13-16 inches tall and still weigh below the weight limit set by the AKC.
Also, I am not the original poster but I have also seen some rather large registered pomeranians that seemed to be of far superior health and sturdiness to the smaller ones I have seen.
>> Anonymous
>>193015However, if someone's asking about a purebred dog, then I would hope to God that they are looking for something show quality.

OP here. Worry not, anon, I would only purchase from honest and repuatble show breeders. I realize that just because a dog is AKC registered does not mean that it should be bred, or that its breeder knows what the fuck he's doing. ^_^
>> tigerfeather !CrwtTbFNxQ
>>193020
They are measured from their actual withers, not from where the coat stands.

>>193032
Thank you for understanding. =3
>> Anon
>>193015
I knew the dog didn't conform to the standard. They were obvious puppymill dogs anyways, we were just looking.
Hell, I was surprised how big my pom is. I'm used to the 'teacup' sized ones I've seen I guess. But yeah, those dogs were much larger than even my full grown dog is now. And their coat wasn't what caused them to appear large. They were going through their 'uglies' so their coat was rather short.
>>193015
Considering the current show quality standard pom is not the kind I like, I guess my dog isn't show quality. He's the 'fox' faced. Nice bone, not delicate, not the frizz coat, sleek, long, but fuck I'd take him over an akc show quality anyday.
And not every area has small dogs in their pounds. I'd rather rehome a dog than pay $300 for a dog. But their smallest dog (in a long time they told me) was a 8 week lab cross that was bigger than our year old chow cross.
