silver mollies rrara
anyone know how many fish = per gallon tank? my molly fish is about to have babies and i was thinking about getting a 20 gallon. i already know that you should start with every fish / 10 gallons to produce bacteria that dissolves ammonia.

rule of thumb for smaller fish is 1 inch of fish per gallon.

when it comes to smaller fish like mollies and tetras, this holds true, but when you get into bigger fish (cichlids, goldfish) it breaks down. if you have a 10 gallon now and you're thinking about buying something bigger, don't bother with a 20g tank, get the absolute biggest thing you possibly can get away with; 35g at least, hopefully more 50-75g if you can.

for small tropical community fish, at least one gallon of water per inch of fish. Mollies fit into that category.
