I was always wondering, why are some people so afraid of spiders or hate them? To me spiders look just like another kind of insect (in b4 shitstorm) and do not really bother me one bit. Did spider bite your dick off when you was 8 or something? Why there is such hatred?

It seems to be based in the very core of the human psyche. I wonder if our distant cro magnon ancestors fought off space invading GIANT SPACE SPIDERS

They're always portrayed as evil and shown in dark, freaky places in films and kid's shows.

And they move like fucking machines, Jesus Christ.

I would understand why people are afraid of spiders if spiders would be at least 10 times bigger. But giving their size and the fact that 99% of spiders are harmless to human, I feel more excited by spiders then afraid of them.

I used to be afraid of spiders. The only reasons I can think of are like>>202442said. They're always portrayed as dangerous (except in maybe charlottes web, and that movie was sad) and they're always found in spooky places. I doubt it's instinctual to hate them, although>>202437makes me feel like punching spiders. It's probably more instinctual to eat them, really.

I don't know, I'm completely phobic of them. I gotta open National Geographics carefully in case they have a page-spread photo of one.

I think it has to do with the leggy alienness of it all. I can't even eat whole crabs because they remind me too much of spiders.

And I haven't a clue if something traumatic happened to me when I was young to cause it. I do remember when I was 8 a spider came down a thread from my hair and dangled an inch from my eyes. My parents thought I was having a convulsive fit. But I was freaked about spiders before that.

Arthropods were our oldest rivals back in the times where most animals were still in the ocean. Also for some reason I'm less freaked by these things when I see them outside than inside.

I remember being young, around 11, and having a spider run up my shoulder and my neck. It was just a house spider but it scared the shit out of me. But now, I own a mygalomorph. After learning about arachnids there is no reason to be afraid oh them. I think the only reason a general fear persists is due to parents bestowing their children with notions that spiders are unnatural and vicious.

Blurry picture, but this is my Shelob. I think she's a rose gray.

I freaked once last year when I caught one in bed with me. I had just gotten under the covers when it went right up my leg, and then it landed on the ground when I ripped the covers off. I calmed immediately after turning on the lights and spotting it, despite its size.

I was more irritated later when I had trouble getting it to sit still long enough to be carried outside.

So, are spiders awesome as pets? If so, what is the best spider for spider noob?

>>202437made me shit bricks.

As for the phobia thing, I have an older brother who got his kicks out of torturing his kid sister- you can guess how I got my fear. I'm getting better, though I had both my housemates come running the last time I found one in my bed because they thought I was being murdered.

i think they are awesome pets..though i recognize the distinction between them as pets..and things like dogs and cats that will recognize you. they are more of display animals..or something you like to observe. and even then, you need to already be somewhat fascinated with them.

the most common starter species is Grammostola rosea (chilean rose hair tarantula) and they are a great example of why you should already have some interest. they are sort of pet rocks.

you just have to remember that they are wild animals..they don't WANT to bet pet or handled like a dog or cat. some will tolerate it for sure..and even that depends on how you go about it.

my advice..read a bunch about them online first..even join a forum about them. after you learn a bit, you should get a handle on the general dos and don'ts and be able to decided if you still want to get one.

there are other great species to look out for as well. check out Grammostola aureostriata, Brachypelma smithi, or Brachypelma emilia (my favorite Brachy) all of them make great starter tarantulas.

i'd say go with a tarantula as your first spider because many of the non tarantula spiders are a bit more delicate as far as requirements go.

I'm sorry, but jumping spiders are fucking adorable. As for the rest...

Some of the spiders in this thread are pretty sweet looking. Some are complete bastards. Why am I scared of them? Towel drying my hair after stepping out of the bath, remove the towel from my face and there is one hanging from its thread in front of my face.

I don't like most insects for a variety reasons. It's not the fear of getting hurt by them, as I'm more afraid of their foreign microbes. In comparison, I hate silverfish, cockroaches, and moths a lot more than spiders.

I do hate spiders with pointy or twig like legs (like the black widow in OP). I also don't like them skulking around when I'm sleeping. Every year or so I find one of them scurrying around my bedsheets, so I'm slightly more judicious when I find them in my room at night. If they're in the bathroom or a hallway, I don't care.

Wasn't there a guy last year who was found dead in his apartment...he kept poisonous spiders and other exotic animals (reptiles, etc) as pets and then one day the spiders escaped, bit him, and then proceeded to eat him.

When they found him it was like something out of a horror movie, with spiderwebs everywhere and spiders coming out of his body cavities, etc.

Camel spider/Wind scorpion.
Not really a spider, but not a scorpion. They belong to their own group of animals. They're fast as hell and fucking huge.

They aren't that huge at all...I have one.

Fast and aggressive though.

protip: spiders (and arachnids) aren't insects.

i went through a point in my life where i was afraid of spiders. i still liked them, as long as they weren't on me or crawling towards me.. as with many things, the more you learn, the less you fear. i was gonna set up a salt water tank and decided it was too much work/money so i searched for something to put in the tank. still not comfortable with spiders, i settled on tarantulas somehow. i didn't even try to handle any of them for a while. eventually, you just aren't afraid of them in any way and i handled one of my largest ones.. after that i handled a few of them and haven't had any problems with spiders since.

For some reason tarantulas don't bother me nearly as much as most regular spiders.

I think it's because they aren't moving around constantly like they're on crack. They just crawl on you, find a spot, and stay there.

But handling orb-weaver spiders doesn't bother me. I used to play with them all the time when I was a wee lad.

Ridiculous lies. Spiders don't eat dead people.
