Well there are different kinds of materials you can use to put ants in, one thing is certain though - do NOT use antworks, it's rubbish.
You can use a test tube for founding a colony, but when you have more than 20 workers you should start thinking about a better nest.
The best material for the most common species is 'y-tong', it's a soft material that can easily be kept moist, the only disadvantage is when you don't keep it moist the ants will start digging in hope of finding water. Next you can use 'gypsum', also very good for ants but it's a messy job making one. Some species like wood, but it has to be special wood because otherwise it'll rot easily.
