You could probably just sell the babies back to the pet store when they're able to be weaned.

Separate boys from girls at 4-5 weeks. The mom can live with the other girls for a while if needed.

Sometimes you get lucky and the mother will eat them all :)

Maybe the mother needs a special diet with extra vitamins and stuff. Check that out.

OP here. day 1 of the little critters being born. I see the milk band in their tummys so the mom is doing well on giving them milk. Ive been giving her her regular pellets 2x a day instead of one and various bits of carrot and egg.

Should I take her out once a day for rest and to be alone? also when should I seperate the ratlings from the mom?

Well, here's a tip for ya. If you bought your first rat by itself, keep one of the baby girls regardless of what you do with the others. Rats do a lot better with at least one friend.

Check out ratforum.com for advice, they're pretty knowledgeable there for the most part, and may have stickies with the info you need or links to it.

One of my boys looks just like the bigger one in the pic, heh.

Big advice is separate males and females like already posted. Double-check em! Males can suck in their nuts when they're nervous until they're 6-7 weeks old, making it hard to sex em, and female rats can get pregnant at 5 weeks. That's why it's so common to get pregnant female rats at pet stores - whoops male mixed in, hope it isn't too late.

I would keep one of the females, rats live longer, healthier lives when kept in pairs or more. Also, she should have access to food at all times.

Separate the males from the females at about 4 weeks old. Because not only will the females siblings get pregnant, but so will the mother. Super retard babies are no good.

Add extra nutrition to her diet. Extra fruits and vegetables, the egg is good, and maybe some nuts.

And finally... Where does OP live? Because I would gladly take some of the males off of your hands! As pets only, not as food >.<. Even if I had animals that ate rats, I would only feed frozen ones bought from the store. Mainly because my friends snake lost an eye while struggling with a live rat.
