Salamander time, /an/.What can you guys tell me about having a salamander as a pet? I've been pretty interested for a while. Any specific breed to get? Aquatic tanks, semi-aquatic? Terrestrial? The only thing I'm really concerned about- do they smell particularly bad? I live in a dormitory with a roommate, so that would be troublesome.Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
They dont smell bad. Tiger salamanders are easy to keep and the best starter salamander. What state are you in anon? They are illegal in a bunch of states.
North Carolina.Tiger salamanders, eh? What can I expect for an overall start-up price? Habitat, food, salamander, etc. And is there a difference between buying from a store or buying from a person? Are there salamander breeders?
I remember my science teach had a couple salamanders that escaped. We found them dried up into little jerky corpses under a desk. Sort of ironic.

Tiger salamanders expect to pay around 30 dollars or so. The adults need a water dish they can bathe in (they poop in it) and about a 10 gallon enclosure for 1 individual. Dusted crickets is a good diet. Check if they are legal to own in your state anon. These salamanders are hard to breed so the ones you find are either raised from tadpoles or wild caught. These dont need special lighting or heating room temperature is fine for tiger salamanders.
10 gallon for one individual? Not sure if I would be able to fit that in a small dormitory- how much of a stretch would it be to five gallon one of these babies?
>>247428...a ten gallon tank is pretty damn small
Man, I had a tiger salamander once when I was like 5.My Cousin found it crossing a street in Wisconsin while she was driving so she picked it up and brought it to my house. It was like, 5 inches long. I kept it in a 10 gallon cage with gravel and a few things to hide in.I always had like a centimeter of water above the gravel and fed it live crickets. That nigger lived for like 7 years with me and it got to like 10 inches long. Then I started not caring about it and it shriveled up cause i forgot to put water in the cage.
To the poster above. It is sad that you stopped caring. It might have lived more as there are reported Tigers that live 12-14 inches. And to the OP if a 10 gallon tank is too big for you then please do not get any animals as 10 gallon is like the smallest for any reptile/amphibian. If the setup is a problem that is a redflag to keeping an animal. It should not be a problem what to house the animal in, but you should be happy to find the best possible home your new pet is going to have.
Oh well. It seems like salamanders are going to have to wait until I get a bigger place. Thanks a bunch for your help, everyone
I was bitten by a wild salamander once when I was a kid... i still have the scar. that fucker bit HARD.
How small is your dorm that you cant fit a 10 gallon tank?
