I want a rodent Anonymous
Rodent of choice, /an/?

Moving soon and could have room to buy a small rodent.

Out of the question- Chinchillas, hedge hogs, ferrets, or guinea pigs.

So your choices are pretty much mice, rats, hamsters, or gerbils.

In return, cute.

I have bad luck with guinea pigs.

Well, hamsters are really only good if you're noctournal as well otherwise the two of you won't have much fun together.

Mice can be fun, I think, but rats are a bit smarter? Gerbils I know nothing about.

Why don't you want a guineapig? ;;

I have had mice and hamsters, boyfriend has kept guinea pigs before; we have rats now and both agree that they are the best of all possible rodents. Intelligent, friendly, hilariously greedy.
>> Anonymous
Rats are cut and intelligent, but social. Be prepared to raise two or three. Get a hamster if you only want one rodent.

rats. they're friendly, social, intelligent, and they'll adapt their sleep patterns so that they'll be awake when you're available to play with them. as they get to know you they'll start to accept you as one of the pack. my ratties were always curling up with me to go to sleep or trying to groom me, and often instigated a play fight.

its been several years since i've had a rat as pets arent allowed at uni. after living with them for 6 years i do miss them.

get two so that they won't get lonely when you're not around, and although each has a different personality, the general rule is get males if you want a lazier rat who'll be happy to just sit on you and be made a fuss of, and females if you want more inquisitive, active rats.

you won't regret it.

Rats- definitly get rats. They're very friendly, and just all around better pets than hamsters or mice.

But male rats have balls the size of manhattan.

insecure much? :P

you can always get the vet to give them the snip. it'll calm them down a bit so there'll be less dominance scuffles. don't know how it affects their laziness though. i've only ever had girls myself.

I dunno, furry balls frighten me.

I'll see what I can do about getting a rat. those who live with me are very eck about rats.

they are cute though.

pish. once they see how cute and playful they are they'll go from eck to aww, like everyone else.

they're like big kids really....well...small furry kids...

i used to store their food and treats in the old ovaltine pots pictured on the windowsil next to their cage. as soon as my girls learned thats where they came from they took every possible opportunity to get in there. one time Chut, the alpha female, picked up the lid, dragged it from off the treat pot and struggled with it all the way back into the cage. once she was in she put it on the cage floor, triumphantly flipped it over and sniffed dissappointedly at the woodchips underneath. i think she genuinely thought there'd be treats there.

damnit...i miss my rats...

How about a sugar glider?

Get a rat.

Get a female if you don't like the balls! Oh, and get babies if the people you live with don't like rats.

Thread makes me miss my rats. They're definitely what I'd recommend. Females for bouncing, playful fun, males for mellow cuddlin'.

Get a tenrec

Rats are super nice, but the guys pee on you a lot. One rat I has was like my best friend for years. He was totally relaxed all the time, and would just hang out on my shoulder and sniff my ear, hide in my hair. Such a sweet heart. I miss him now.

Why not a nice clean bird?

WTF IS THAT?

It is a strange afrotherian mammal called a tenrec. Not a rodent, not a hedgehog, but from a completely separate group most closely related to the golden moles.

i have 4 rats (2 girls and 2 boys, each sex in seperate cages) and they're the sweetest liitle buddies ever.

I just love my rats!

The other rodents aren't nearly as cuddly/friendly.
You can play with them and litter train them and teach them to come to their name.
But, because they are social you should get at least two rats.
And, I suggest you get them someplace other then a pet store(watch out for petco!) as I have had bad experiences with buying sick rats from there.
I got two of mine for free off of craigslist.

Of course, there is only one choice if you want a rodent: the capybara.

I just got my daughter a rat. I've never owned one, myself.

After one week of having him, I'm madly in love with him. More loving than most rodents; smarter; cleaner. There's nothing I don't like about him, except that he's a baby and a little shy since the store people never handled him.

"a" "one"? your little buddy is going to be awfully lonely, get him a friend rats are social creatures
>> Anonymous
i vote rats. you can adopt them from rescue groups. you'd be surprised how many rat rescue groups there are out there. usually if you go through a group, you can find larger breed rats that are bred and raised specifically as pets, instead of the ones you find in the pet store that have never been handled and are bred mostly as food for reptiles. rats are super cute. definitely get two, though. they like the company.

Hyrax is also not a rodent.

And just in case, let me remind that aardvarks, elephant shrews, manatees and elephants are also not rodents. Nor are pangolins, sloths, armadillos or anteaters. Also non-rodents include hedgehogs, true shrews, bats, tree shrews, primates, colugos, carnivorans, perissodactylans, cetartiodactylans and a few others, including the entirety of marsupilia.

Lagomorphs aren't rodents either, but I'm willing to let that slide.
