a monkey ball?

I'd guess a fruit of some sort, rhambutan or something.

Um. Yank one off, carve it open? Then you can at least see if it's some sort of fucked up cocoon or something.

OP's tree is clearly an oak, and you can even see one of its acorns. fruits also don't grow in the middle of leaves. Could be a scale insect or something like that. I've never seen gall (swelling of a plant where an insect larvae is growing) on leaves either, it's usually in the stems near joints. Besides, gall is the plant reacting to the larvae, it doesn't grow fuzz like that.

see if you can get it off, but use gloves as those hairy things may be irritant or toxic. cut it open if it doesn't react.

Huh, yeah, you're right. Sorry, brain a bit fried.

Just looks a lot like one of those exotic fruity things.

Doesn't look like one of those larvae-swells, honestly, far as I can tell from the picture it's attached to the surface, rather than growing out of it. For that matter I've never seen one of those damn things get hairy.

"These cool looking structures are galls that appear on white oaks as spheres that are covered with spines. Inside small cynipid wasps are developing"
