The smell is extremely manageable if you know what you're doing, but unneutered males in particular smell really strong. They all have a smell to some degree, but you can certainly do things to control it. And odds are if you don't know what to do TO control it (ie if you bathe them a lot, don't clean regularly, don't clean the litterbox daily), yes, they're going to smell bad.
