I believe they DO have empathy; I do not see why not, because the part of the brain present in humans that causes 'feelings' is also present in other mammals... (I forget what it's called, does anyone here know?)
>>229639 As this Anon said, animals are very good at reading body language and posture. This also includes facial expressions as well, I think, especially with dogs.
Anyways, whenever I'm upset my dog can tell, and he comes to lay his head on my lap or lay next to me. The same goes with anyone else in my family, though mostly just me and my mother, since I guess he's 'closest' to the two of us.
As for my cat...I really don't know. I do think she's capable of empathy, but she doesn't seem to understand me much, since I've only had her for around 3 weeks.
