Survivorman Anonymous
Is Les Strous fuckin awesome or what? I dream to be like him someday. This guy can survive Anything. He's a great outdoorsman.
And Bear from Bear VS Wild is a faggot. If you don't already know, his entire show is completely fake.

Uhh, wouldn't the show have to be fake? Only a retard would think it's real. Not like the camera-man is going to go sleep in a fucking carcass and eat eyeballs too. Who do they think is filming that shit?
>> Bitter Anon !!WJLRQ1cwCyZ
Strous is boring as fuck. It's annoying to watch him whine and bitch while he spends five hours setting up cameras for two minutes of dramatic shots.

I'd rather watch Bear. Of course it's 75% fake, but it's entertaining. It boils down to:

Watch a dude named Bear eat stupid shit and speak in a sexy accent, and tell slightly amusing tales of stupidity
VS
Watch a guy sit in the woods for an hour, being emo because he's alone and hungry while wasting what resources he has

I watched the episode with Strous in the bayou. It was fucking terrible. If he didn't sit around whining and "make camp" or build a raft (and then wade through the goddamn water), he could have been out of there in a short while. It was pitiful. Fucker made a bed of spanish moss, would have liked to see a week later when he's screaming and clawing his skin off.

On the other hand, I watched Bear in the everglades, and actually picked up tips about figuring out which way is downstream (I'm sure I'd have figured it out eventually) and he ate a live frog.

At the very least, he sure as hell shouldn't have them help him in any way. I read they once built the raft for him because he couldn't manage to do it himself.
Plus, it's from the BBC, and every single "reality" thing from them is 100% fake. And who knows, maybe their documentaries are too, although I have a hard time with that.

You misunderstand his show. He's not about getting out of wherever he is, he's about surviving where he is. There are some episodes where it's clear that he's only a few hours walk away from safety, but escaping is only a portion of survival. OK, so if the moss would have been bad in over a weeks worth of time, assume that he would have been rescued by then. Few people disappear into swamps for over a week without some one actually looking for them.
And there are episodes where he attempts escape, but surviving where he is, even temporarily, is more important then escaping as fast as he can. Do you expect him to spend all his energy on building a raft for 4 days straight while he sleeps in the dirt and starves? Or do you expect him to waste all his time building a fancy shelter in one spot with zero attempts at escape?
It obviously has to be a balance of priorities.
So you think he shouldn't have built a camp, nor built a raft? Then what the fuck was he suposed to do? Lie in the dirt and die? That makes sense! Hike for 7 days straight without food or shelter? Even better!
>> Bitter Anon !!WJLRQ1cwCyZ
Er, after re-reading that, I feel I should rephrase and/or clarify something.

Two days in one area with regular sunlight would kill me, even if I was found immediately and treated. Stress and sunlight would combine and I would blister and my joints would lock as soon as I was still, and then I would be effectively dead, as I would be unable to find food or defend myself. So, building any kind of shelter for more than a few hours is a complete waste for someone like me.

Even subtracting my illnesses and stubbornness from the equation, a person in a "survival situation" should not stay in one spot for long periods of time if at all possible. If you are wounded or disabled, it is definitely better to set up a camp and try to survive in one area. If you can get out, then you should make camp at night and continue to find your way "out" during the day (or reverse depending on the situation).

I'm curious, do we have any military anons around that can weigh in?

You seemed to have missed my point. I was responding mostly to this (time I learned how to quote)
"If he didn't sit around whining and "make camp" or build a raft (and then wade through the goddamn water), he could have been out of there in a short while."
So you said he both shouldn't make a shelter nor make a raft because he could have gotten out of there by some other option. I assume you meant hiking. I assume you meant he would be out in less than 24 hours. Any situation where hiking for maybe 10 out of 24 hours would safely get you to safety would justify that course of action. Otherwise, not making camp and not making a means to escape would be a terrible idea.
He probably could have done better if he was able to spend more time on a means to escape rather than needing to spend time on food and shelter, but 7 days is the limit. Basically it's assumed that in 7 days he'd either die or be rescued. There is only so much time, and to survive for even 7 days at all is a feat it itself.
The only reason Bear isn't whining about being hungery is because he fucking eats when the camera's not rolling. Also, Bear takes an insane amount of risks so he can escape, but hardly focuses on surving where he is. He shows off how many cliffs he can climb rather than getting food. Then he drinks his own piss to show you just how stupid he is.

For example, in one episode Bear was in the desert. Out of desperation, he pissed into his waterbottle and drank it. Strous was also in the desert in an episode in the Kalahari. When he was in a MUCH more desperate situation, he also drank his own piss but in a much more safe way.
He put a cup on the ground, pissed in the area on the ground around the cup, put a piece of plastic over the whole area with a weight to make the plastic dip into the cup. The distilled piss collects on the plastic and drips into the cup as clean as drinking water.
Also, often Bear goes into the wild with NOTHING but a knife, supposedly. Who in their right mind who ever end up in a survival situation with absolutely nothing? Did they just get transported magically into the middle of the desert? Anyone who'd wander out into these situations without a single thing deserves to die.

You're completely full of crap and you're talking out of your ass just because you think it sounds cool to be "proactive" and run around rappelling off of 30 foot waterfalls like Bear Grylls. In a real survival situation when a real person is lost (IN THE REAL WORLD), if you run around trying to find your way back you are more likely to get yourself lost and killed. That clown with the gps system who got killed in the snow storm tried to find his way back and look how well that went.

This is the saving grace of Man vs wild, 99% of the advice is completely retarded shit that would get you killed in the real world.

This may be harsh, but I'd think Les Stroud has a better idea how to survive than some faggot on the internet. I mean it really makes you seem like an asshole to wit behind a monitor and talk about suriving the wilderness. Theres some kind of horrible irony in there.

For all we know maybe he goes camping in the southern swamps all the time or something. We're anonymous, we could be anything. I assume no one knows any better than anyone else based on their claimed experience without proof.
Hell I go hiking often but I've never been beyond 10 miles from civilization in my life, and I rarely hike more than 5 miles altogether. The one time I got lost in the woods it took me a mere 3 hours to find a trail I recognized, and only because I had never been in that area before. That's the most of my survival expierance. Obviously, I'm no more qualified than anyone.

Les rocks, I had to pull myself away from the TV just to stop watching the Survivorman marathon. I never get bored seeing him struggle to start a fire.

Strous has no charisma, I can't watch his show for more than 10 mins, bear wins by process of elimination
>> Anonymous
Dude Les is funny, his humor is just a bit dry. Bear is full of s**t. The stuff Les does would actually help you survive cause he does it all himself with the actual tools he takes with him. Bear Grylls obviously gets help, has a camera crew with him and he gives tips that noone would remember cause they're too specific to the given location. As if anyone's gonna remember that a specific type of seed on hawaii is useful to make a torch...real helpful. If there were a real survival situation, Bear would be dead by process of elimination (natural selection)

I like both of the shows. Les definitely gets bonus points for roughing it out all on his own and doing all the work himself. However, while their shows are both about survival, they define 'survival' differently.
Survivor Man is about a man out on his own surviving for a week. Sometimes, he tries to make his way out of a dangerous area, but just as often he is waiting the time out if he's in a good area, and waits for his time to leave. This could be interpreted as the "stay put and wait for rescue" method of survival. This is typical for people trying to survive by themselves because the effort needed to build multiple shelters/fires and search for resources in new locales can be too much for one person.
Man vs Wild, however, is never about Bear staying in one place. He's always on the move, actively looking for civilization and salvation. He doesn't want to stay put. Since he always has a camera crew, you can imagine, if you like, that he's not on his own and can be a little riskier. Sometimes he gives advice on what to do if you're alone, but even if he were all alone, you have to remember that Bear is a retired military guy and much younger and athletic than Les is. (Not that Les is a wimp.) He might not have the patience to wait it out, or that may not be the show's goal, because he doesn't have to be at a certain place by a certain time before the team back home gets too worried and starts looking for him.

Anyway, all I'm saying is that the shows are a little too different to directly compare them. I like both of their shows and I think they're great. Though, I would like to see them both do a show, some sort of survival-off, if you will.
