Hey pet owners, tell me why guinea pigs come in two distinctive head shapes. The cute round, pudgy face, (e.g. mine) vs. the long, ratlike skull-build.

everytime i go to petsmart, i see that they have these rat-like guinea pigs, and not the adorable pudgy ones that i recieved from a breeder.

They all have the same face. It's just a matter of how fat they are, and how old.

The ones at petsmart are just skinny.

they are distinct sub families, abyssian, the standard english, etc.......... the english are the skinny ugly ones.

These.

Guinea pigs come in so many different coat variations and age does have a lot to do with it. I worked at a Petsmart for two years and our guinea pigs were usually 1) young and 2) these english ones>>195229mentions. Also, I'm not sure about the particular store you go to, but we sold guinea pigs pretty quickly and had new ones every week. There is, of course, some stress involved in shipping animals and they may have been on the light side due to that stress. Once you got one of those guinea pigs home and into a relaxed environment, they would probably round out a little.

I guess the "cuter" ones have shorter snouts etc... And it differs with the breed, and the colour. All my piggies that are buff or cream coloured have pudgy faces :3
