So it's not that your python is looking for a better hiding place as much as more warmth. Plus I think they tend to burrow sometimes, but I may be wrong on that.
Using a bedding of plastic astroturf is not the best idea. Plastic+heat=toxic fumes. You would be better off using the astroturf over the cage base, like in the hiding place, as it is good for when reptiles shed skin.
