I never said it was good for them, only that there are worse things that we do to fish. Yes, the prices of fish in pet stores are set to compensate for a good portion of each shipment dying. I did work at a Petco for many years. Fish loss is huge, but it's huge across the board. Tetras, angels, livebearers, dyed species like painted glass fish and cotton candy tetras... plenty of them would die, but the dyed fish didn't die any more than the other captive-breds.
Also, according to the 2nd link someone posted, the dyes are either injected subQ or laser-burned in. No acid, though ;)
