So my parents have this cat and its got both an oily coat and dandruff. They insist on feeding him Science Diet Light which appears to consist of mostly corn and rice bran. Do you think his coat will improve significantly if I convince them to use some 'ultra premium' food like Innova or Wellness? Pics related.

It probably would improve it's health and it's coat, but introduce those higher quality foods slowly, they can give your cat massive shits if you just swap foods suddenly on the cat. Slowly blend the food, increasing the ratio of one while decreasing the other, space it out over the course of like a week or two.

Cats are obligate carnivores. They are not supposed to eat corn or rice bran, they are supposed to subsist on the raw meat, internal organs and bones of small animals. Anybody who feeds their cat mainly with corn and rice and thinks it's "scientific" needs to have their head checked.

One big problem is companies like Hill's have figured out that a lot people will buy something with the word Science in it, just assuming that it's nutritional. I've trying showing my parents the ingredients lists of SD and Innova side-by-side and I think maybe maaaaybe the information is starting to click.

My cats had very flaky coats until I switched their food to Solid Gold (also "ultra premium"). Innova is a great food, just be careful about introducing it SLOWLY. It's pretty rich by comparison to other cat foods, and can upset their stomachs if you don't do it right.

So yes, it will help the condition of his coat. I saw significant improvements in both my cats and my dogs when I switched their food.

In the meantime, use talcum powder to reduce the oil - rub it deep into their coats to absorb the excess oil before brushing it out.
