Anyone have experience with Eclectus? I've heard they're messy eaters, generally quiet (for a bird of course), and can be awesome talkers. If all this is true, how can they not be the most popular birds out there?
I've hand fed a couple of Caiques, but I have yet to own or really interact with any Eclectus beyond the grumpy pair at a local pet-store.
Has anyone done hand raising on a chick or two, and/or have any input on Vos vs Grand Solomans?

not helpful, but LOOKOUT, IT'S SPIDER-BIRD!

They cost more than a keet.
THATS why they're not popular.

beautiful birds, however, due to their very specific dietary needs, they don't poop like typical psitticines. they pretty much have nothing but liquid stool, and it sprays everywhere, so yeah.. very messy.

Interesting, I hadn't heard that specifically before. I knew they were rather good at spreading food eeeeverywhere, so much so that some owners build bird feeding boxes out of plexiglass so's they can contain the carnage.

Eclectus look fucking scary. I mean... the expressionless single-colour face, I can't read that at all like you'd read a budgie or tiel. Combine that with the large, powerful-looking beak and you've got me keeping a respectful distance.

Also, I'm told larger parrots (i.e. past conure size, cockatoos and bigger) aren't as much mindlessly exuberant fun as the smaller ones, which makes them more of an aviculturist's bird rather than just a simple companion animal.

Eclectus are good talkers and pick up on things pretty well. I used to work at a pet store and ours picked up on the employees asking people "How are you today?" and when we asked her how she was the bird responded with "I'm fine."

Unfortunately she picked up the annoying teenage customers habits as well...every once in a while you'd get a "fuck you" from her..lol
