so i just read the wikipedia article on cesar millan and looked up some articles about him and apparently all professional dog trainers hate him

what does /an/ think of him
>> Anonymous
Cesar's strongest interest is in rehabilitating aggressive dogs and he holds a special fondness for what he refers to as the "power breeds," such as pit bulls and rottweilers. Cesar dislikes "softer breeds" such as poodles and does not recommend these breeds to prospective dog owners.

There are professional trainers, behavior consultants and behaviorists that state that Millan's methods are inhumane, referring to the use of alpha rolls, flooding, and constant leash "corrections". According to them these techniques can have serious behavioral consequences. While critics agree that Millan does not hit or physically injure the dogs he is working with, they believe that subjecting a dog to these techniques is inhumane treatment.

Dr. Nicholas Dodman, the director of the Animal Behavior Clinic at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine of Tufts University, has said “Cesar Millan's methods are based on flooding and punishment. The results, though immediate, will be only transitory. His methods are misguided, outmoded, in some cases dangerous, and often inhumane. You would not want to be a dog under his sphere of influence. The sad thing is that the public does not recognize the error of his ways.” In a February 23, 2006 New York Times article Dr. Dodman says of Millan’s show "My college thinks it is a travesty. We've written to National Geographic Channel and told them they have put dog training back 20 years."

Jean Donaldson, The San Francisco SPCA Director of Academy for Dog Trainersstates, “Practices such as physically confronting aggressive dogs and using of choke collars for fearful dogs are outrageous by even the most diluted dog training standards. A profession that has been making steady gains in its professionalism, technical sophistication and humane standards has been greatly set back. I have long been deeply troubled by the popularity of Mr. Millan as so many will emulate him. To co-opt a word like ‘whispering’ for arcane, violent and technically unsound practice is unconscionable.”

Dr. Ian Dunbar, Director of the Center for Applied Animal Behavior in Berkeley says "He has nice dog skills, but from a scientific point of view, what he says is, well ... different," says Dunbar. "Heaven forbid if anyone else tries his methods, because a lot of what he does is not without danger."

Dr. Andrew Luescher, Veterinary Behaviorist for the Animal Behavior Clinic at Purdue University says “Millan's techniques are almost exclusively based on two techniques: flooding and positive punishment. In flooding, an animal is exposed to a fear (or aggression) evoking stimulus and prevented from leaving the situation, until it stops reacting. To take a human example: arachnophobia would be treated by locking a person into a closet, releasing hundreds of spiders into that closet, and keeping the door shut until the person stops reacting. The person might be cured by that, but also might be severely disturbed and would have gone through an excessive amount of stress. Flooding has therefore always been considered a risky and cruel method of treatment.”

On September 6, 2006, The American Humane Association issued a press release condemning Millan's tactics as "inhumane, outdated, and improper" and called on The National Geographic Channel to cease airing the program immediately.
>> Anonymous
>>133365

In October 2006, the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants wrote a letter to the National Geographic Channel regarding concerns "that the program may lead children to engage in unsafe behaviors." The Association called for a change in the program's rating of TV-G.

Also in the month of October 2006, The Alaska SPCA refused to sponsor a dog rescue benefit by one of Millan’s trainers, stating "We just don't align ourselves with the Dog Whisperer's methods”.

Nothing really, aside from rolling your eyes and whining "Oh, Sugarpuff you naughty, naughty, boy!" whenever your inbred dog pisses on the persian carpet.

The single best way to train a dog is constant contact and interaction with the dog, not going to some weekly "obedience school" sessions and whining about dog therapy bills.

While physical punishment such as tugging on choke collars and whatnot may seem harsh and "inhumane" - No one can deny it gets immediate results, which is exactly the same reason Asian parents beat their kids.

I dislike him because he's a stupid, arrogant prick and we work in the same field. I'm obligated. What bothers me most, however, is that he does it to get money. He doesn't do it because he wants to help animals, they are the means to an end for him.

As another poster said, the best way to train a dog is through constant interaction. Dogs learn through instinct and affection, because they want to please you, their alpha. I've never had a problem with dogs trying to dominate me, so I honestly cannot give advice on the best way to reinforce your dominance; I apparently do it automatically (Hurf, instinct), and a lot of "techniques" people recommend appear stupid or pointless to me because of that. Things like "alpha rolls" and eating first are more damaging than they are useful to me. If a dog rolls over on it's own, I scratch it's stomach and leave it alone, as the dog obviously submits, and I acknowledge that and agree that I'm the boss by scratching. THAT should is what should be called an alpha roll, not throwing your dog to the ground and wrestling him over. Subtle, gentle control is what dogs respond to best, and frankly, a lot of people aren't able to do that.

Have you SEEN the dogs on the guy's show? They are the meanest, most aggressive dogs I've ever seen. That's why he gets called in, because noone else can do shit about it. The owners on the show have totally ruined their dogs by spoiling them, and letting them run their house.
>> Bitter Anon !!WJLRQ1cwCyZ

Yes, an I have dealt with dogs like that. He gets called in because it's a TV show and the owners are attention whores who don't take care of their pets. There are better trainers and rehab facilities than him, but those cost money and won't get you on television.

Congratulations, you earn 100 fucktard points.

According to the majority of scientific DNA evidence, wolves and dogs ARE separate species. Wolves are considered Canis lupis, while dogs are Canis familiaris. MANY animals which are obviously different species can interbreed and have fertile offspring. For example: zebras and horses, yaks and domestic cows, coyotes and dogs, jackals and dogs, coyotes and wolves, wolves and dogs, lions and tigers, leopards and lions, and pretty much ALL small wildcats (servals, caracals, lynxes, et cetera) with one another and the domestic cat.

Ah yes, they are the same species, but even among dogs there are more and less aggressive breeds, isn't there?
I'd say dogs with severe behavioral problems require severe discipline. I mean, I love dogs and have two huskies. They're not the most cute and cuddly things you'll ever seen, but they would react kindly and obediently to me and my girlfriend because they know we are much, much more meaner than they are if they're ever out of line.

More than likely a poodle's. A purebred husky (not one descended from a wolfdog that some faggot bred to siphon money off of posers) is actually very genetically dissimilar from a wolf, as are many other "wolflike" dogs such as German shepherds. Dogs which are considered "primitive breeds," such as basenjis, chow chows, and the tibetan temple spaniel, are actually much more genetically similar to the wolf.
>> Anonymous
>>133788

Uh, NO, dogs are not a wolf subspecies, as identified by the most recent genetic studies. All of those animals listed DO have fertile offspring. Many "domestic" cat breeds such as bengals (leopard cat X domestic cat), chausies (jungle cat X domestic cat), and savannah cats (serval X domestic cat) hinge on the fact that these animals produce viable offspring which can breed with either species.

Regardless of how closely wolves and dogs may or may not be related, you can't treat a dog like a wolf. They're not wild animals and have evolved alongside humans for so long that those methods are inappropriate for them.

Also, Cesar's book was awful. All he did was toss around celebrity names and brag.

WTF are you talking about? Elusive breeds? Are you a moron? What sort of feline species classification is that? Would someone please translate that from retard-speak?

Yes, almost all small cats (with the notable exception of the ocelot) can breed with the domestic cat and produce fertile offspring, including:

Servals, caracals, lynxes, jungle cats, bobcats, margays, sand cats, leopard cats, wildcats, and pallas cats. Obviously, pantherine cats do not breed with them, and some of the rarer small cats (Andean mountain cats, Bornean bay cats, etc) have not been used in breeding programs due to the rarity of the breed, not because they can't be bred. Also, many wild species can be interbred, such as the bobcat and lynx, lynx and caracal, and serval and caracal... although these breeding experiments are less lucrative money-wise (because the offspring can not be sold as pets in many areas) so they are not as often performed.

I have no idea what point you were trying to make by listing some homosexual made-up animals, other than you are a retarded, cock-mongling, basement-dwelling, fagtastic jizz-trough.

You clearly haven't had an Asian mother who totally kicked your ass to hell and back. And you know what the worst thing is? Just when your bruises and welts are about to heal, they carelessly *mention* your apparent wrongdoing (eg getting 3rd in a maths test) to your father at dinner .... then all hell breaks loose. Again.

The other side of the equation is that, like dogs, Asian kids only respond to harsher and harsher punishment, until either a) one day you literally beat the kid/dog to death (a common occurrence in Asia) or b) the kid really really goes off the deep end and becomes a vicious heartless fucker. (another common occurrence in Asia)

Same reasoning could be applied to dogs. Of course, one could tell the Asian parents to just help the kids study instead of screaming at them about their test results, in the same way one could always guide the dog instead of screaming at the dog whenever it does something wrong due to YOUR neglect.
