Expensive and fragile. They also like to die.

They take tons of time and attention to actually grow. I tried this shit, followed all the ridiculous directions, and not even a sprout grew.

If you plan on getting into bonsai, be prepared for a lot of work and dedication.
>> Anonymous
I see these in the grocery store all the time for like $20 how fragile could they be to be shipped all over like that.

Protip: those die nearly regardless of how well you take care of them.
>> Anonymous
they're not that crazy dificult to look after you just have to trim the roots and shit as long as you get a book of somthing it's not that dificult

Needle varieties suck to grow and pre-made ones from stores just die from shock. Its easiest to purchase some small fig or fruit tree, some thin wire, and make your own for cheap. Pick all of the leaves off, then when they grow back, only pick off the largest leaves, they'll keep growing back smaller. Rotate the planter every day, the movement stunts its growth. you'll see those results in little time at all, but its the shaping of the branches that take a long time.

There is a arboretum near my house that has a bunch of these. I'll go take pics someday and share with y'all.

Proprotip: every potted plant dies. With well-done bonsai, you MIGHT manage to die first.

Can you explain this to me? I mean what's there to shock them, if they managed to grow them for years without trouble, how can they manage to die in a month after you buy them?

Temperature/humidity/light change from the store to your house. I bought a bonsai in hot and humid Hawaii and when I flew home it was dead within the week. Fucking sucked.

They are easy if you KEEP THEM THE FUCK OUTSIDE...HOW MANY FUCKING TREES DO YOU KNOW THAT CAN LIVE INDOORS FFS! FICUS! ANYMORE???? FICUS, GET A FICUS BONSAI AND YOU ARE GOOD YOU DAMN SHUT INS.

Actually there are quite a few bonsai you can keep indoors.

There's this really neat invention called a window :O heard about it on the discovery channel

There are trees, the vast majority of which are ficus, and then there are some bushes and houseplants you can keep tiny.

Try keeping that maple tree next to a window and see how that works out for you idiot.

Actually I have a trident maple on a window sill.

Keep in mind though that the windows im talking about are in direct sunlight through most of the day :)

>>293678
lol easy man.

What makes you think sunlight doesn't shine through windows?

Proproprotip: I wasn't talking about well-done ones, I was talking about the $20 store bought ones.

>>293698
Eh, I would never trust buying one from a store that isn't a nursery or a store that actually sells plants.

I myself like to grow my own either from seed or go out in the woods and find some sprouting baby trees and then cut them down to size and prune/shape them

Parts of the UV spectrum are filtered out by glass. While plants can still survive on light filtered through glass, hence greenhouses, unless there are windows on all sides including up above most trees won't receive the necessary amount of light for a long enough photoperiod to survive, let alone thrive.

Well mine seem to be doing pretty good for living for about 6 years in their location now. They used to be outside in my greenhouse at my old house, but now I just have really large windows in my "sun room" of my new house and I usually keep my windows open a lot during the summer months. There is also a ledge to the outside of the window where I can put the trees so they can get even more fresh air.

Damn chill out.

I didn't see (and still don't) where you said what I said or anything that has to do with what I said really.

I'm growing a pinus pinea from the seed right now and so far it's doing well. Though it's only a year and a half old, so it'll take some more years until I can even think about cutting. Which I will probably be too lazy for.

Oh yeah: It's just standing on the window board all year, so no, you don't need to buy any special lights and shit.
