It probably varies between species, but it's amazingly bright for something so tiny. Where I live (Wisconsin) they all come out at once, usually after it rains, and it's one of the coolest things nature's ever done.
If you catch one in a jar, it'll stop flashing. As a kid, that taught me more about life than anything I learned in school. I can't imagine growing up without them.
