Hey /an/
My cat has had a little hair loss right on her hips (both sides, sort of symmentrical) for a year or so now. Ive looked around online and most of the problems associated with hair loss seem to come with all kinds of wounds or rashes or stuff like that. She doesnt seem to have any problems other than hair loss. It doesnt hurt her, it isnt red, its not rough or scabby or oily or anything.

Any ideas?

It's very common for older cats to have hair loss in a few places.

How old is she?

My sister's cat is about 12 and for years now she's had a perfectly defined bald patch on her flank... It hasn't worried her so far, so maybe it's not anything unusual!

My cat's 18, and she's recently started losing a great deal of her hair. I attributed it to the heat (she sheds in summer). She's still eating fine, and she's still as active as any old cat can be, but it's still rather alarming. She doesn't seem to really give a shit, though.

Yeah, the hair loss is pretty much because of old age if your cat is 18 years old.

It is possible she is losing hair because of an allergy, age, or over grooming. The latter two are most likely if she doesn't have a rash. If she spends a fair portion of the day grooming herself, or she habitually naps next to another cat, it could be they are being TOO affectionate and grooming a bald spot. Many animals over groom when stressed or they just forget to stop.
