King snakes are great snakes for beginners. I just suggest you wash your hands before and after handling, and don't handle it too much at first, since they can get stressed from over handling. Over time, they become really laid back, and don't usually bite, so yea, they're a mellow species.
Ball Pythons are another good snake, but aren't really for people who can't handle a snake that can reach five feet or more, and have the girth to boot. Rarely do they ever bite, and can be handled safely, especially if you're doing a science expo for your local school. OMSI's choice for snake/kid supervised interaction.
Main things is buy a few books and do internet research on the snake, buy all your equipment and a decent sized tank before buying the animal. Also, washing hands before and after helps nullify any spread of bacteria to you or the snake, while keeping the cage clean of feces and uneaten foods is even more important.
