I feel like I'm making my rats miserable, and they would be so much happier in another home.

I have a big cage for them, tons of boxes and shit for them to run around in inside their cage...I give them treats, I take them out and cuddle/scritch them...but that's all I do. I don't really do any other activities with them other than simply holding them and cuddling with them and shit.

I can't let them run around in the house somewhere, we can't really rat-proof any rooms. I don't have any of the more elaborate toys like "digging boxes" or anything, just lots of boxes and tubes. They had an exercise wheel but they outgrew it, so we're getting them another one of those...

They seem happy enough, but do you think they have enough? I feel like I'm holding the poor little things back even though I love them ;_;

no your not, but if you want to try and rat proof a room, its nearly impossible.
if they feel trapped enough, their nature will take over and its VERY likely that they will be able to chew through most metals, i have seen it happen before.

from the sounds of things, your ratties should be pretty happy with where they are and what you give them. if you want to please them even more, though, let them run around in a rat proofed room for an hour or so a day. i let my girls run around in the bathroom, and they only need to be semi-supervised. they can go where they want and do what they like in there, and i've taught them to hop into the bathtub to do their poop/pee so it's easier to clean up. luckily, my rats aren't big chewers, so i don't need to worry about them chewing on the wooden cupboards. if you are gonna leave them alone for a while, though, give them something to hide in when they feel scared, and leave some food around for them to munch on if they get hungry. if you want them to have even more fun, hide the food in corners and up on stuff they can reach easily so they'll have to scavenge their food like they would normally in the wild.
