I've been wanting a cat for some time, but I wouldn't know what breed to get.
Turkish Vans seem cute, what does /an/ think of them?

Mixed breed. Much cheaper (or even free) and just as good as a pet. Well, if you really want to go to cat shows with your cat, then I don't know.

Seconded. Unless you're planning on entering shows with your cat, why bother purchasing a purebred? Pretty much every animal my family has ever owned has been a mutt, with the exception of a Jack Russell we got from a backyard breeder. They've all been great (sometimes even beautiful) dogs and cats with great personalities.

You don't really need a reason to get a purebred. I know people who have gotten Bengals just because they love the breed. Turkish Vans are my favorite cat breed of all time and I plan to get one when I get my own house.

But, they are more expensive that a mutt breed. If you love Turkish Vans then go for it, if not then I recommend a mutt or even adopt a cat from a shelter.

I love Turkish Vans. Here are some of mine.

Cute breed, but any purebred cat is more likely to have health problems than a mixed breed.

If you just want a cat, get stray from the pound. You'll pay less (and get spaying, shots, and chipping included) and have a cat that's ultimately healthier than any purebred. You can also probably have your choice between a kitten or an adult cat.

Yeah, I recommend the mixed-breed from the shelters.

Problem is, there are too many puppies and kitties and not enough people willing to take them in.

Plus, the cat gets the best of every world. It'll be much hardier.

If you do decide to get a specific breed, I recommend the American Curl. I've always wanted one. They're supposed to be very friendly and pretty healthy, since there's no disease specific to their breed.

Of course, there's other options when thinking about purebred animals. There's rescue project specifically for certain breeds all over the place, and it often costs less to adopt from them.
