HI!

This picture is off topic for a reason.
I've discovered that cooking food is cheaper for my dogs than buying canned dog food. Chicken is 68 cents a pound compared to a 89 cent, 12oz can of dog food. I was wondering, where is a good on-line source for what foods are bad for animals? Herbs, spices, beans, what makes a balanced diet for you -and- your canine friend?

Wow, that first link actually recommends feeding cats 50% carb meals... the words 'obligate carnivore' must be falling on some deaf ears over there.

My grandma made liver for her boston terrier every couple days and he seemed to love it. man, the farts were eye watering though.

My mom flipped out about the dog food recalls and started feeding my dog boiled chicken breasts, sweet potatoes, rice, and mixed vegetables. Hearing that your dog is eating better than you sure makes you want to move home...

Oh, that's just great. The chicken breast is probably the only one of those foods that should be given to dogs regularly.

She could have just started buying dog food brands (like Nutrience) that are scientifically balanced but also only use high quality ingredients from Canada and the US (instead of shitty by-products from China). However, she chose instead to make food at home from random shit around the kitchen, hoping by random circumstance to actually provide the dog with all of the vitamins, nutrients, and carb-protein proportions to keep him healthy. Good on her!

HI!

If you are so fucking cheap or poor that a difference of 21 cents a pound is a big deal to you, then you shouldn't own a fucking animal in the first place. You are obviously either a fucking Jew or a low-income piece of shit. Die in a fire.

make sure they get all their vitamins

my neighbours just use a quality feed and cut it with 50% rice. rice is cheap and easy to cook.

also use rib bones instead of store bought chewies. bones last longer

It works out to around $1000 over the course of the dog's life.

you do all realize that less than 100 years ago, dogs and cats were fed with whatever leftovers their owners had from their own tables and survived?

Ah yes, the people who feed their pets cooked diets, or BARF (bones and raw foods) diets are a joke when it comes to both cost and nutritional value. As a veterinarian I cannot recommend anyone feeding their dogs those diets. Personally, I feed my corgi's and basset hound Science Diet Adult. When it comes down to the cold hard facts it is almost impossible for anyone, including your average vet, to home cook a meal with any long term meaningful nutritional value. I remember at one of my CE conferences a speaker who had calculated it would be about $5-10 per day for your average 60lb mutt of a properly prepared diet. That being said it was prepared by a Veterinary Nutritionist at Hill's with all the needed 'vitamins and minerals' from various grocery store sources. Feeding your dog a premium diet such as Science Diet, Iams, Eukanuba, Purina Pro Plan or Royal Canin will ensure your pets supplied with all the proper nutrition. On a side note, NEVER give your dogs Meat bones, or poultry bones of any kind for various reasons.

A thousand dollars over the course of fifteen to twenty years is not that much. Of course, if you aren't giving your dog a healthy diet, it might be considerably less time, but then your savings would diminish proportionally as well.

Bottom line, if you're trying to save seven cents a can for dog food, you should probably look for a better job.

IAMS?! Holy fuck almighty, you're one of those vets whose nutrition classes were funded by Hill's, aren't you?

It's not THROWING AWAY, you stupid cockstain. It's investing money to keep your animal healthy, so that you are not spending multiple thousands of dollars later on veterinary bills to fix the pet that you FUCKED UP by feeding a shitty diet.

Fuck you. If you are not OP, you shouldn't have a fucking animal, either, you fucking kike.

So you're of the belief that a pet is incapable of living healthily on a diet that doesn't come out of a can? It's a wonder we domesticated any animals, huh? Enjoy your wasted money, though.

Sup, just now hopping in to this thread. The concern isn't just barely sustaining them on minimum nutrition, it's with trying to keep them HEALTHY. That can be done either with BARF or high quality kibble. The concern with raw/BARF is that people who aren't doing it right could unintentionally deprive their pets of necessary nutrients. Real purists just give their pets whole raw chickens and other meat sources with the bones and such. Bones are perfectly safe as long as they are NOT cooked. BARF/raw is only a problem when people do it wrong. And for those types (like me), there's kibble.

Yeah, it sucks that we can't trust the advice of medical professionals anymore.

Stray dogs just eat whatever garbage they can find, and they seem pretty on the ball.

...yeah, for a couple of years, maybe. Do you want your dog to live more than a couple of years?

Agreed on the fact that vet's nutrition class was sponsored by Hills, especially since Bil-Jac and Nutro, both high quality kibbles that meet the AAFCO standards, weren't even mentioned.

Anyway, as for feeding raw or home cooked, make sure you've got your facts straight. Bone meal is important for health and is something that is often overlooked. Vitamins and supplements are also a must, as there are many that aren't available in the necessary quantities in a lot of foods in these recipes. And if you believe that dogs are obligate carnivores, you are sadly mistaken. Fruits, veggies, and a very small amount of carbs are necessary for proper function of the canine body.

What a lot of people seem to be doing (at least around here) is feeding kibble, but cutting the portion and replacing the cut portion with cooked food, usually beef, chicken, or lamb (NEVER cooked bones as they become brittle and have a tendency of splintering) with veggies or fruits and brown rice. The jury is still out on its effectiveness and nutritional value.

For the majority of dog owners, YES. I've worked in the veterinary field for six years and seen the tragic results of feeding shitty/improper diets too many times to count: rickets, anemia, diabetes, renal failure, bloat, urinary blockage, and so on. All of which could have been prevented by someone actually feeding their animals a proper diet.

If you can actually create a homemade meal that fits all of your pet's dietary needs, go for it. But most people (and definitely not anyone on fucking /an/) can do that... especially if the motivation behind it is to save a few bucks. Just look at the people around you. Most people can't even figure out how to fucking feed THEMSELVES properly, which is why there is a surplus of fucking obese, malnourished, diabetes-laced, vitamin deficient people around.

In conclusion, you are a cunt.

You're forgetting a simple fact:

Most people KNOW that their crappy diets are, well, crappy. They just don't have the willpower to change them becasue they are stuck in poor habits and they LIKE the taste of their unhealthy meals.

That problem doesn't exist when cooking for your dog. Dogs don't complain about how the food tastes or if the menu suddenly changes, so there's one huge roadblock out of the way.
