I just heard from the groomer that my dog had three flees on her. She hasn't been near other animals that I know of. I give her daily walks, but don't take her into tall grass or wooded areas. Advice /an/? Will I have to burn my house down, or are they not that big of a deal to take care of?

Get over it anon, fleas are no big deal--as long as they are not over-populating the dog, thus making it anemic fro4m blood loss. I you wish to have a flea clean dog, there is many diffrent brands of flea and tick shampoo's availible, just be careful and read the directions first because some shampoo's are more powerful than others. She should do well with a mild brand. Also another way is to flea comb her everyday, starting at the neck and down her back, where the hair is thickest. combing is very time consuming and not extremly effective. If you don't like to bath her much then at you local pet store you can buy flea and tick drops that you apply on her back that will kill fleas and their eggs for a month. It just depends what Anon like.

OP here. I'm going out to buy a flea comb and perhaps some treatments tomorrow, and am washing her collar and all her toys now. Anything else I can do? I see a lot of hippie treatments that say "feed them garlic" or "spray lemon juice on their collar" that I'm wary of. She's a Shih Tzu and the fleas were found on top of her head, of that matters.

But seriously, what the fuck. There's five inches of snow on the ground. I thought fleas were a Summer problem?

Fleas are an all year thing, they just tend to get out of hand and most populous in the summer months. They still can survive in the tiniest of crevices or come from the dirt under the house.

Regular combing and a monthly treatment or bath should be fine - also, dewormers sometimes help, so if you don't regularly treat your dog for worms, now is a good time to start. Just don't overdo the treatment on such a small dog, and the residue from treatments can rub off on you and get you sick too.

I'd recommend Sergeant's Skip-Flee shampoo for dogs and puppies. It's supposedly active for up to 10 days. Bathe your dog in it about once a week. It's badass.

dude fleas are no big deal-that fact that your groomer said it had 3 fleas makes me lol though-it has way more than that, just buy it some damn flea medicine, like advantix or the other big name one.

Flea baths work as well
