I'm glad I caught this thread...

When I was younger and living out in California, we used to dig up these little fuckers on the beach shores...

My mom called them mud crabs- but I know she was clueless to what they really were...

I've always wondered what these things were called because I used to find them all the time when I was younger and I never knew much about them...

Dear me... I've never posted on 4chan before, but this is sort of my specialty... Well, I'll assume you're familiar with the usual suspects: Trichoplax adhaerens, Anomalocaris laggania, Opabinia regalis, whip scorpions tuataras, caecillians, Megascolides, the Tully monster, onychophorans, Sacculina, and so on. If there's something I've mentioned that you'd like to see, say so; otherwise I'd hit the image limit. Here's an australian land leech.

For sheer creepiness, I've never seen anything that beats the Black Swallower (Chiasmodon niger). Erm, have you heard of the freshwater seals of Lake Baikal? Those really surprised me. Also, if it's weird you're looking for, you really shouldn't pass up the Ediacaran fauna. Things like Tribrachidium are so mysterious.

Sorry, forgot the image.

OP here.

>>111985yeah those are from the eidcarian fauna amirite? most anyway. is it true tuataras have 3 eyes? i've heard certain other reptiles have 3 eyes as well. got any pics of that so called "monster" of fraser island? its actually a giant burrowing cricket, but i haven't seen a pic since i was a kid. cooloola monster or somethhing.

>>111986

black swallower i heard of when i read a book about oceans when i was a kid. it was my favourite of all the deep sea fish, followed by the gulper eel and the oar fish :P yeah i know about the edicarian fauna, i'm studying to become a palaeontologist, they are pretty weird, some having their own phyla and all. opabinia and anamolocaris are the coolest i reckon. no i don't know about those eels, whats the deal with them?
>> Anonymous
     File :-(, x)
I can't resist mentioning this one... schizochroal eyes FTW. You might also enjoy the fig wasp lifecycle, lantern flies, archerfish, the megamouth shark, and bryozoans, but you've probably heard of those, too. I haven't heard of the fraser island monster, but it's hard to imagine a burrowing cricket being cooler than wetas. Opabinia and Anomalocaris are definitely the coolest; I just found an enemy in Skies of Arcadia that was modeled after Anomalocaris (really! it's named a "shrilp", for some reason!). Cambrian fauna should be more popular. The black swallower was probably my favorite, too, but it's been sort of displaced by Beebe's monster, assuming that it really exists.

As far as the freshwater seals go, well... basically Lake Baikal is just really damn weird. I wish I knew more.

I apologize, but I can't find a better link than this for the wheel spider:

Here's an epic creature if there ever was one:

the Cuban Solenodon, also known as Almiqui. One of very few poisonous mammals. The Almiqui has a venomous bite.

OP here. phew so many things

>>112285

...you got me. i know it's an artiodactyl, i know it probably comes from the jungles of south america or africa, but i don't know what it is.

>>112291
extinct sea scorpion, not real :P

>>112366

that's an angler fish, if those tendrils are real, i'd say they're probably growing from the fish itself, which mimics weeds and rocks and other things on the sea bottom in order to conceal itself from prey. if not, it's probably algae. actually from a second look, they're part of the fish itself, some of those tendrils are longer and branching.

>>112352
lol studying zoology is a good pathway to palaeontology :P
>> Anonymous
>>112428
112285 here, the animal is the greater mouse deer, also known as the greater Malaysian chevrotain. You're not completely off the mark with the location, either, chevrotains are found in Africa too. Not in South America, though. Agoutis look somewhat similiar though they're rodents, so maybe you were reminded of them.
