Royal/Ball Python. They stay reasonably small, they're pretty hardy, docile-- Good starter snake, or a snake for someone with limited space.

Ball python's are good, I think cornsnakes are decent too and you can get them in some pretty nice colorations. Just make sure you keep it SECURED, nothing sucks more than having an escape artist pet that some idiot decides to harm because they don't know anything about it other than OMFG IT'S A SNAKE KILL IT W/Fire...thats why I didn't bother taking my tarantula to the dorms, just gave her back to my mom.

Usually keeper error when anything manages to escape. I work with over two hundred reptiles and arachnids, and have a sizable personal collection. I've only ever let out two Savu Pythons, just recently, when I didn't put the lock back on the cage after daily maintenance.

Moral--It's your own fault if your pet [or charge, as the case may be] gets out.

I realize that it's a human error, I'm mainly stating it so that the person knows to be careful. Human error or not nothing sucks more than having your pet hurt over something that could have been avoided with proper precautions.

Keep in mind that when this poster says they stay reasonably small, small is a relative term.

Ball pythons get to be about 5 feet in length, and about 2-4 inches in girth.

that said, they are very docile, as has been stated, and also they don't require special lighting (although it's still good for them) and I believe they are less prone to some of the sicknesses that other snakes tend to be prone to.

I love my bp.

ball pythons are pretty sweet.

But don't ever, ever, EVER have a snake loose in a dorm room. Eventually your attention will wander and it will squeeze under the door or into some other crack.

i know that all too well.
the worst part about having a dead snake surgically removed from your colon is that when doctors laugh, they make mistakes.
