We call them that too, but "daddy long legs" is like "banana spider." Different areas call different creatures "daddy long legs." In some places it's cellar spiders, craneflies, or these things. "Harvestman" refers to order Opiliones, which is what these things are.

They used to scare this shit out of me as a kid. Just because of the tickly legs when they crawled on you.

Yeah, they do cluster together like that. My mom had a ball of them dropped on her head when she was a little girl, sparking a lifelong hatred of them. I don't know why they do that, though.

*weeps pitifully* I hate Daddy Long Legs...We actually call them Grand Daddy Long Legs here. They freak the hell out of me.

It would be the worst day ever if you woke up and your pubes had changed into that.
I don't know why they cluster up like that, but I've seen it happen on the side of my house once. When my mom found it, there was a holocaust.

I found a paper on these guys here:
http://www.americanarachnology.org/JoA_free/JoA_v16_n1/JoA_v16_p123.pdf

here's my interpretation of it (correct me if I'm wrong; academia is not my native language):

1)the main species that forms up like this is Leiobunum townsendi , though other species will do so also (and joun in the townsendi clusters)

2)these masses form twice daily, at the beginning of the end each day

3)these are not mating masses. the researcher noted that when males started trying to mate, the masses broke up.
>> Anonymous
>>62693
oh yes, and

4)they formed in spring and fall, but not summer and winter (during winter the species tended to die off)
>> Anonymous
>>61920
lol it looks like my pubes.
>> Anonymous
>>61920
OK, now somebody suggest names for them.

I hate you. some day I will kill you for posting that.
>> Anonymous

>>3)these are not mating masses. the researcher noted that when males started trying to mate, the masses broke up

now how the fuck would they know that two spiders are fagging it up.

Anyway, anyone know what the fuck they're doing in a group like that? Could they keep warm like that? I realize bugs don't generate body heat but you have to figure there are still temperatures they can't tolerate and must blanket each other like that.
>> Anonymous
>>62751
Actually, bugs do produce body heat. Some insects are even functionally endothermic (mostly the hairy ones, such as bees and bumblebees). They generally produce their heat by moving their muscles, so a big lump of arachnids like that might be able to prevent freezing just by shuffling their legs...
