This is a ferret.

It is made of wiggles and narcolepsy!

My ferret is blind in one eye, almost eight years old, and deaf. He's hilarious. Runs into circles and is shocked and awed by EVERYTHING.
More than any other ferret I've ever owned.

Hey How much are ferrets, how much matience do they need, are they allowed as pets in California, and are they really sweet or bite-ish
>> Anonymous

I seen ferret kits sell for about $199 and more grown up ferrets for about $99 at stores, but I am sure you can find some to adopt.

They need as much maintenance as any other pet would need. Clean their litter, give them fresh food and water, learn how to properly bathe them and do so as directed. Also they are very social creatures so if you can't spend a lot of time with your ferret you might want to consider taking in two.

I don't believe they are allowed in California.

They can be sweet or bitey. Depending on the ferret and also depending on how it's raised. Though usually when they are bitey they are only playfully bitey. The ferrets you need to worry about are those who bite to draw blood.

Not to mention - ferrets are not cage animals, although many people keep them that way. A ferret will be the happiest if it is allowed to run free in your apartment, and they can be trained to do their needs just like cats.

Yeah pretty much all a cage should be for a ferret is a place to get food, water, go to the restroom, and occassionally nap in a hammock.

Owning a ferret is a lot like owning a puppy. They need lots of excersize, training (litter box and nip), and vet visits. I'd say don't buy one unless you have enough cash to spend on vaccinations and an emergency fund. I've had ferrets for three years and they've had way more accidents (falling off a shelf I didn't notice one could climb to, breaking into some food and getting diarrhia, mystery vommitting etc,) than my four cats and one dog combined.... I love them though!

I was gonna ask, are they really as smelly as the ones in the pet shop? I leaned over the cage and holy shit, they are stinky. I imagine one gets used to it, but I don't want me or my house to reek of ferret...
>> Anonymous
You prolly smelled their litter over them. Some pet shops don't clean the litter out too well.

No, no no!

Not at all like 99% of ferrets in pet shops. They have a natural ferrety smell, but imho it's not as noticable or gross as dog smell. There's a few tricks to minimizing your ferret's odor.

1)litter train and clean out box 1-2 times a day.
2)feed meat based food that's low in fish oil. Totally Ferret, Innova Evo, Marzuri
3)Don't bath unless they're actually dirty. Shampooing removes normal oils/moisture and triggers the body to produce even more to make up for it -ignore common mythology, people who own ferrets long term know better than to bath them often.
4)use cloth bedding. I give mine a few piles of old shirts and wash them weekly. Most ferret odor collects on old bedding, so I just wash it away.
