Hi /an/
I think dogs are awesome and the bigger the dog, the more awesome. Sadly it seems that these huge dog breeds dont live very long? Avg. age even below 8 years for some? Sad.

If I ever should get a dog, what breed would you recommend. Criteria is size and age. I want a big dog that lives a long life with me :3
I'd love a wolfhound or a deerhound, but only concern is their health. Even mix-breeds are fine if they are healthy.

big dogs don't live as long because their hearts work harder to keep them alive, which wears them down faster. Its the same way for human giants. It's really depressing

Anyone know any compromises between size/health/age..? Not necessarily a hound, but still laid back nature such as the deerhound, maybe a borzoi? Doberman could be considered big but they might be too demanding for my taste.

If you can, try to find either an Akita mix or an Anatolian Shepherd mix. Akita mixes can get up to about 2 1/2 feet at the shoulder, sometimes three depending on what it's mixed with. I had a friend who owned an Akita/Shepherd mix that lived to 15.

I looove giant breeds. Unfortunatly, if you really want to go giant, you'll probably have to scacrifice some longevity :_( I think my top pick for giant breeds is the Caucasian Ovtcharka, but they're a flock guardian breed with lots of drive so they need a job to do and a *really* good handle that knows their dog training shit.

English Mastiffs, Great Danes, and Newfoundlands are great pets. If I could have any dog, it'd be the mastiff in this pic!

Bull mastiffs are fuck win.

Actually, I think that if you make sure they get a lot of exercise they can actually live pretty long. I've heard of people having Irish Wolfhounds live to be 13.

I guess it also depends on the individual dog's genetics too, though.

The ones I've had live 10+ yrs. Loyal, fun, docile, don't require much work (over-walking or exercise leaves them open to hip dysplasia and other joint problems.)

All the ones I've owned lived at least 9 years, the oldest one living to 13 yrs. I still miss my merle dane with all my heart :(

Borzoi are awesome. and FLAT, FUCKING FLAT. I don't know HOW one breeds something to be so tall and yet barely wide at all. I saw two at the beach once. Awesome dogs.
10-12 years, females usually living longer than males.
But, some individuals have lived to 16 years.

Does anyone have more pics of a dog this size? This has to be a shoop just because this thing would be ~400lbs and the size of a fucking grizzly.

No gates can keep that thing in check. I dont know alot, but looks like a Caucasian Ovtcharka or some other like that?

They clearly haven't been like that always. The second dog on the left looks quite broad and bulky!

I second Borzoi. Anyone know a good breeder/rescue in the NE Pennsylvania region?

Giant breeds are definitely the best for fuckin'

What breed is that?
>> Anonymous
Borzoi/afgan hound = DO NOT WANT
Sight Hounds = DO NOT WANT
not laid back, demanding, ALWAYS leashed.
>> Anonymous
>>207383
And there are some non-lazy pet owners who also always keep dogs on leashes regardless outside, so I fail to see the problem.

>sighthounds
>not laid back
your joking, right? I know not EVERY dog is the same, but really- every greyhound I've met was a couch potato. My friend had owned 2 at one point. Most relaxed lay-on-the-couch-forever dogs. And most resources will say they're laid-back.
>> Anonymous
>>207400

Yeah, they are laid back - AFTER their racing age has passed. before that, greyhounds are bred to be energetic streaks of dog.
>> Anonymous
>>207401
If that's an issue then one might consider adopting a greyhound from a rescue organization.

My opinion is if you want a lap pet, get a cat.

Otherwise get a real dog. I plan to get either a Golden Retriever or possibly a German Shepard when I move out. I also like Great Danes, but that may be a little too big.

Monster-shop-madness!

And for clarification, Im not going to buy a big hound and let it sit all day. Daily excersise is a must. There are even some race tracks and lure courses for the dogs around here. So activitation shouldn't be a problem. Responsible owners keep their dogs always on leash, when not in fenced areas. No matter the breed?

Why not try the Wolfhound x Standard Poodle...?

>> Anonymous
>>207174
My suggestion
Step 1: Buy two of the biggest dogs you can find.
Step 2: Have them breed as much as possible
Step 3: Sell off the weaker offspring, and keep the stronger ones
Step 4: Repeat step 2 through 4
Step 5: Succeed in creating a super-breed of ultra-large gorilla-strengthed long-living dogs.

That have a very high rate of genetic defects.

Damn, I bet that thing could take out a lion!

But personally, I don't think you can beat a German Shepard or Doberman as far as a house dog goes. They're only medium sized, but I think they're some of the most fun all-around dogs... as long as you don't train them to tear people to pieces and stuff

I have a golden retriever x standard poodle mix, he hit 100 lbs (not fat) when he was done growing. Hes very laid back, loves cuddling, doesn't shed. Supposed to live to 13+ years.

they make great watch dogs too, not a guard dog mind you. I don't think he'd hurt a fly. They do have to be shaved once in awhile though or else their fur (if they take after the poodle) won't stop growing.

Also have to be careful of the breeders you get them from too. A LOT of them are puppy mills sadly.

And sorry for the crappy picture its the only one I have of him on this computer.

He looks like a lot of fun. And yeah, I will only buy from reputable breeders.

GSD are my second choice if I cant house a bigger one. Great dogs, you can train them well.. And hey, even Hitler liked them ;)

I'd also like to point out that this picture is a trick of the eye.
The dogs head is improportionate and very big.
Look at it this way, how high would a normal, to large dog come up to on the man? his waste, up to his ribcage, some even higher. Its the head thats throwing everything else off.
