I posted a few days ago about adopting a chinchilla. Well here he is! He still doesn't like me though :(

I need a good name. Suggestions?

Also, how long does it take for chinchillas to take to their new owners?
>> Anonymous
>>321857

It take anywhere from a week to two months.

Interact with them every day and hand-feed them
treats twice a day.

Ah, cool. Not op, but they've always interested me. Seems like a cool animal to own. Anything you'd let a prospective owner know?

Me again.

I currently own two; a Violet and a Standard VC.

I owned an Ebony, but she died from malocclusion
complications.

The treats I give them are a single shredded wheat
square in the morning and afternoon. Most chins
also LOVE dried apple pieces. Mine go berzerk for
them.

Well, basically, let them decide when they want
to trust you to be held. If you constantly grab at
them it only scares them and they won't learn to
trust you. This is one of the reasons for regular
hand-feedings.

The Violet that I own I've had for two years now
and she still prefers not to be held except when
I'm taking her out to let her run around in her play
pen area.

Give them plenty of lava stones and/or hard food
items to chew on so that it keeps their teeth from
becoming over-grown.

Also, use pine for any wood you put in the cages;
most other types of wood are poisonous and will
kill them.

OP here

I heard they liked raisins too. I was going to go to the store and buy some tomorrow to try and win his love through food.

Can two males live together? I was thinking of buying him a friend later but I wasn't sure if two males could get along.

Raisins are okay once in a while. Take heed of this
or your chins will get diarrhea.

The basic rule of thumb for feeding them is that the
less complex their diet, the longer they end up liv-
ing.

Male and female pairs are okay IF they are introduced
properly and given time to adjust to each other. Putting
two chins that don't know each other in to a cage can
(and often does) end in violence.

I don't know if you've ever been bitten by a chin, but if
their teeth can chew rocks apart, another chin's skin
and fur aren't much of a match.

I Adopted 3, in a short time I had 18.

Fuckers breed to damn fast!

they are fun though...if you can keep them from making babies. Also, you have to play with them a lot and give them a lot of out of cage time.

I have cats and they got along with them fine, which I found weird, cant say its the best Idea to leave them alone with other animals though.

Every other pet I own is scared to death of them.

I guess my cats and dog have watched Pokemon
too much and think it's a little Pikachu that's come
to zap them.

So you guys like them as pets? I hear they are very playful at night? Is it a problem if you are awake fairly late? Or is it pretty much all through the night?
>> Anonymous
>>321874

They're not particularly loud.

Mine have a chain with wooden blocks on it and
a bell on the end. Once in a while they just ring
the hell out of the thing and it gets annoying, but
not very often.

Can you post a picture of your chins?
>> Anonymous
>>321876

Let me see if my camera is charged.

If it is, I'll post some.
>> Anonymous
>>321876

It is. Let me grab a few pictures.

I'll take a picture of the cage too.
>> Anonymous
>>321876

Okay, give me a sec to get them all loaded up.

I hate this camera so much. It's VERY sensitive
to movement and you need a tripod to take pic-
tures that aren't blurry.

Blabbity blab.

Still waiting. I'll start posting them shortly.

Okay, this little guy is "Fudgie".

When we saw him at the breeder, we were told
it was a female. Turns out, after we looked, it
was a male.

As today he's four months old.

That would be really helpful for me. He's in a temporary cage right now. I was going to try and make him one tomorrow out of an old book case.

Here's Fudgie again.

I named him Fudgie because Chins shit everywhere.

Here's the cage.

It has two doors for each level that swing over 180
degrees to open. It's hard to see, but there are var-
ious wooden shelves attached the sides that give
them places to perch.

I use ceramic food dishes.

The multi-colored things hanging near the center
of each level are the wooden blocks on the chain
that I mentioned earlier.

The chin on the bottom is Becky, my Violet.

How much did that cage cost you and where did you get it?
>> Anonymous

>>321889

This one cost me $230 and came from PetSmart.

It's actually meant to be a ferret cage, but it had
all of the features that I wanted (most importantly,
WHEELS).

Here's the picture of the cage made from the wooden
cabinet that I did up a year ago.

I used a jigsawn/circular saw to cut the inner portion
of the door out and just used a staple gun with some
fencing mesh to make the screens.

You have no idea how to use a camera, do you?
FOCUS!!
>> Anonymous

>>321891

Also, notice the grey disc at the bottom.

It's the best version of a "wheel" for Chins to use and
is called a "Flying Saucer". You can get plastic ones
from pet stores, but I prefer the metal ones since they
attach directly to the cage and don't slide around.

This picture here is of Becky. She's a snot. If she won't
let me hold her, she'll put her paws on my hand and
push it away when I hold it up to her.

>>321893

I know how to use focus, thanks.

Like I said, the camera is sensitive to MOVEMENT.

Lrn2Read.

>> Anonymous
>>321895
The issue has nothing to do with movement, things in the background are more in focus then things in the foreground, that means you aren't focusing.
>> Anonymous
>>321896

No, it means that my Chinchillas don't sit still
while my failure of a camera captures the image.

See how that works, slick?
>> Anonymous
>>321897
Still sounds to me like you just don't know how to use your camera very well. make all the excuses you want, but I bet if someone else took the picture it wouldn't be as out of focus.
>> Anonymous
>>321901

Thanks for keeping the thread bumped.

Now go troll somewhere else.
>> Anonymous
>>321902
I'm not trolling, I wanna see nice photos of your chinchillas. blurry out of focus photos are useless.
>> Anonymous
>>321904

That's all I got on such short notice.

The camera's battery had just enough to get those.
