Whats with the societal misconception that if I grown man is seen showing affection towards a cat that he is either gay or effeminate in some way? Is it becuase cats are portrayed and perceived as purely feminine creatures as apposed to the masculine dogs?

pic relates; me and my (male) cat after I gave him a bath

I definitely don't have that misconception. I actually tend to think of male dog owners as more effeminate than male cat owners.

That's just stupid. Everybody, men and women, have feelings and the capacity to love. People who believe that boys don't cry and similar bullshit deserve the miserable life they live.

My brother is six foot three, fitness fanatic built like a brick shithouse. He's a mechanic by trade, ex navy, can turn the air blue when he stubs his toe.

Him and his girlfriend have a cat.

It's a fluffy one, a Ragdoll to be exact, it'll lay across your shoulder for hours. There's something fundamentally wrong about my manly brother playing with his cat. The blonde attention-seeking fluffball just doesn't seem to match his image.

But on the other hand they also keep a breeding GSD and it's pretty huge and tough-looking. You'd think that it would make up for the cat, and it certainly looks like it does until you pat it and realise that it and the cat are pretty much the same, personality-wise.

Big macho guys and fluffy cats are a bit odd-looking together. My bro's GF thinks he's cute though, so I suppose that makes up for any potential loss of manhood on his part.

I know lots of manly men that love cats. It never even occurred to me that it might seem unusual.

I am a heterosexual male. I pick up my (male) cat, give him wubs, and talk silly to him all the time. When my (male) dogs were still alive, I would give them wubs and talk silly to them, too.

Isn't that just what one does with a pet? What's a pet for if not to give wubs and talk silly to?

Oh, anyone who thinks cats are weak or effiminate obviously hasn't seen a cat box a snake to death or carry around a rabbit carcass as big as itself.

My dad spoils my cat rotten, and my cat knows she's got him wrapped around her paw.

Coincidentally, I think men who like cats are +10 sexy.

I've never heard of anybody thinking giving wubs to pets is effeminate. I know my dad was always reluctant to pet my cats, but that's because he's got a thing against cats because they kill birds, etc. But after moving home with them for a while and him realising my cats are indoor cats, he warmed up to them :p Don't think it's got anything to do with masculinity.

My fiance talks silly to my cats as much as I do lol. Pic related.

I scoff at the notion that a man can't love on a kitty.

Can't stand cats. Full of hate, no tricks, floppy, want to murder you.

Dogs are loyal, easy to please, and do not always look unhappy.

It's cause dogs aren't as passive, and they show you can be responsible and not just into cuddling kitties.
Also, smelly litterbox home = smelly men, maybe?

The thought never occurred to me. Cat or dog, the manly man is going to look silly (not gay) loving on it, so, wtf.
