I have a cat with dreads on his sides. He won't let me cut them off as he gets VERY feisty when I approach him with a brush and scissors. I don't know if they're hurting him but will it be harmful to him if I just leave them be?

I think for cleanliness sake, cut them. Try grinding up some baby advil/tylenol in his food, and when he gets drowsy, start the snipping.

Don't grind up more than a full pill, and try to only give the pet half.

Take it to a groomer. They get paid to be scratched and maimed.

How did he get dreads anyway? When was the last time he was cleaned?

well eventually the rest of the hair will mat

i have a "fiesty" cat that ive had to clip down before myself since i know she would maul the groomer

and if he is really that bad, i wouldnt bother taking him to the groomers because if he gets "fiesty" with them not only will they not do him, they'll probably charge you for the grooming anyways

its not like a dog where you can put a muzzle on them, if you get bit by one you HAVE to go to a vet, and since thier skin isnt attached to thier muscle, they can pretty much flail thier way out of anything

long story short, get a few people to hold him down, get a pair of CLIPPERS (motorized ones with blades, like you would use on your hair)and use a 30 or 40 blade, not scissors, get a few people to hold him down, and run the clippers parallel to the skin. Do NOT dig in with the blade, run it flat against the skin, and if the blade catches a mat, DONT force it, back the clipper out and work at it until you get the mats out. When cats get cut thier skin rips open like paper so be careful but its nothing to be really scared about. As long as your careful you should be fine

my cat looks like she has mange half of the time because of the chunks of hair i have to cut out. whatever. lol

ok HI:) im a groomer... you defanetly do not want to leave them becouse is dose hurt the animal, but u dont want to cut them eather, cats have paper thin skin that can be cut seriously fast, unfortunately you should bring it to the groomers, and if its a money thing, i say take it in and have it shaved every 6 months (i have to do that w/ one of my cats cuz he mats up so quickly) that way its maybe 80$$ a year, do it soon tho becouse the tighter the mats get the more it will hurt the kitty

pic is my kitty that has to be shaved(hes a happy naked boy)

You terrify me.

I would make you go back and finish high school English before letting you near my cat (or dog) with any sharp implements.

OP, go to a vet and have the cat sedated and trimmed. If you don't, the matting will get worse and can actually tear through the cat's skin (the mated fur pulls on and twists skin). Believe me, the vet bill for one sedation/shave is much cheaper than a sedation/shave/wound cleaning/round of antibiotics. =)
