ants actually don't eat their dead, at least from their own colony. But they will attack and kill other ants from other colonies, even of the same species. Some don't, though, and some live in "super colonies" composed of up to 100 interconnected colonies each with a queen.

Ants are particular about cleanliness (in their terms). Nobody wants dead carcasses lying around.

Also, dead bodies tend to carry diseases, and ants don't want the whole colony to be wiped out from a virus or spores.

Depending on the species, they may carry their dead bodies in some designated waste pile, or they might be programmed for carrying the bodies a certain distance away from where they were found.

I live on the top unit of a 2 story flat unit type of place.
The person below us must be a dirty son of a bitch because we always have ants coming up in the brickwork etc..

There must have been a debugger around a few months ago, cause 1 of the holes that lead to my porch area where they occasionally popped out was layers with this black ash-looking stuff. On closer inspection it was just piles and piles of dead ants, must have been THOUSANDS of them. I'm guessing they were all carried out of the tunnels by the workers to clear.
Found the queen struggling around on the ground not long after, woulda captured to make a ant-farm if I had the equipment, always wanted to see if I could manage it from a wild queen if I could get my hands on one, but yeah.

PS. one of my cat's cat friends (not ours, he just hang around our door all the time) came up on the porch, saw the piles of ants and proceeded to roll on them and matter them into his hair.

Anyone have any fucking idea why he was so intrigued by the piles of dead ants enough to roll in them?
