I know there are always like 3000 rat threads daily on /an/ but I know a lot of you guys know tons about em so here goes.

My friend recently, like a week or two ago, bought a female rat. Just one. Then he discovered that his roommate was moving out and planning on signing the lease over to my friend. He can't afford it, so his roommate terminated the lease or something along those lines I guess.

Well anyway the point is that my friend is moving back into his parents' house and they absolutely do not want the rat. Being the heart of gold animal lover I am, I offered to take the rat, since I was the only one of his friends that have any experience with them, but with that, I know, rats shouldn't be alone.

I don't want a socially deprived and miserable rat on my hands and due to my job I can't be there for the animal 24/7 (although I plan on spending as much time as possible with her). Should I buy another rat or will that end in bloodshed? Do you think she'll be okay on her own? She's been sleeping mostly since I got her so I can't tell if she's horrible depressed or not.

Did your friend keep the rat alone or did he have several of them?

I've been wondering the same thing, I recently bought 1 female rat, and now I feel like getting another from her same litter :3 will they be OK? It's been a week since I've had her.

Yep, rats rarely have serious fights when they meet, especially females. Introduce them outside of the cage, it helps to change the bedding and move any accessories around so female 1 isn't so territorial. There will be wrestling and squeaking, but they should do fine.

I have had solo rats, and typically if they're raised alone and given plenty of time outside of the cage (basically, they hang out with you anytime you're on the computer/reading/playing games or even hang with you at a friend's house) they do okay. But it's always best to have more than one just in case you don't have the time to play with her, and rats do tend to get depressed as they get older and slower.

d'awwwwww
Yes, I have added to my little groups of rats many times and it was always fine. Just introduce them somewhere neutral, like on your bed. Just so that no one is feeling territorial during that first meeting.

Rather than start a new rat thread, I have a question -- does anyone know if putting the little dwarf dumbo rats in with regular ones is all right? I have a massive cage, and only one larger, older female rat.

Awesome, thanks. I was worried. Our pet store currently has no rats so I'm not sure when I'll be able to pick another up, but I'll definitely keep checking.

My first pair of rats were a dumbo and a fancy rat, and they got along just fine. Aren't dumbos the damn cutest?
