If a cat kills a mouse and doesnt eat it, it is usually because they are trying to teach their 'inferior human protegees' how to hunt. in order to do this they will kill or capture the animal and if it is not done in the humans sight they leave it somewhere they know the human will find it and get the message. In OP's case its the water bowl because they know OP will find it there because OP probably changes the water in it a lot in full view of the cat, in my case my cat usually leaves it by or in my shoes because after I feed the cat I check on the animals that live outside.
The cat isn't really trying to insult you by saying you're a rubbish hunter/rubbish at feeding it, it is just being greedy and saying it wants more food. Given the chance a lot of cats would happily have food shovelled into their gobs every waking hour though, see the fat cats thread.
