I seriously doubt this is attributed to old age. Why, I had a bird named Popi when I was 11, and I remember precisely when he got sick, he exhibited the exact same symptoms. He was also being picked at by the other birds, so my mom kept him in a cage with Nina, the only bird that didn't pick at him. I tried to raise money to get him to a vet, but it was no use, and after a few months, he died the day after my 12th birthday. What's even stranger, though, is that not long after Popi's death, Nina suddenly fell ill with the same thing, and she was a young bird. She only lasted a few weeks before she joined Popi under the tree in our yard. Therefore, this was communicable between birds, and therefore not caused by age, but by disease.
