Cat Bathing Anonymous
My cat freaks out every time we give her a bath. She's an outdoor cat that often comes home smelling awful. Is there some way I can get her enjoy baths? Would putting catnip in the bathwater work?

Have you tried those quick wipes? They don't clean as well as a real bath but it's a hell of a lot easier.

Why would it matter if an outdoor cat smells bad? Instead of giving her the bath, put on some "outdoor clothes" when you want to go out and play with her.

fact: cats hate it when you bathe them

Stick it in the pooper.

I still have the scars from the one and only time we tried bathing our cats to deal with a flea infestation. It's amazing the power that one freaked-out housecat can bring to bear.

Why would you give your cat a bath in the first place? Cats cleans themselves. I've had outdoor cats all my life and they always manage to be perfectly clean and nice smelling.

My cat has an oil spot on his back from sleeping under cars, he is tan tabby with a giant black spot on his back.

He'll clean his face and then just fall asleep. I've NEVER seen him clean anywhere else.

What does she smell like?

If she smells like rotten eggs x 10000, then she probably got sprayed by a skunk and I don't know a good "cure" for that.

Does she smell "like death"? If she does, she probably has a horrible abscess and is dying. Take her to the goddamn vet.

Oil obviously should be washed away if possible. Sometimes it's enough to use a wet cloth with some shampoo to clean it up, if the cat is horribly aversive to bathing. Clipping the oily hair off may also help to eliminate it. I've done so with my cat with an oil spot on her head.

A cat that doesn't clean itself sounds positively abnormal. Maybe he is just unwilling to lick that oil, so he's given up. The only cat I know that doesn't clean herself properly is an obese elderly cat with joint problems (probably because her owner has fed her all sorts of unhealthy stuff). She simply can't flex herself enough to wash all areas.

I have a diabetic tortie that doesn't groom anything below her waist. She's old, arthritic, and has a "cobby" body, and she wasn't particularly flexible when she was young either. While food quality and obesity can factor into a cat being unwilling to groom itself, it does not explain all of it. Some cats can't groom themselves for unrelated reasons, and some simply didn't learn how. A friend's Siamese is the latter, she was hand reared from birth and has never met another cat except a the vets office. She has always been brushed with cat wipes.

Wet rag + a little dish soap = oil gone. Be sure to get all of the soap off though, otherwise you will have to clean the shitbox a lot more.

One day I will have my own faggot.

We got him from a shelter when he was very young, I don't think he ever learned how to clean himself throughly. What he does know he picked up from our other cat.

Will try the shampoo and cloth though

Put about two inches of water in the bathtub, and ten goldfish or so. Get some larger and some smaller for a variety of hunting. Put her in there and let her go nuts. Repeat every two weeks until she loves being put in the bathtub. Get a hose that goes onto the bath tap and has a shower-head like attachment on the end. When you want to bath her, put a goldfish in the tub, put her in the tub and hold her by the scruff while you shower her. Then let her munch on the goldfish. She'll eventually view bathing as the minor inconvenience before a fresh meal.

My cat loves water. When she was a kitten, she'd play in the toilet.
