Is heart worm medicine for dogs necessary everywhere? I live in Southern California, and my vet tells me that it's not necessary...true or false?

I have a question about worms too. My indoor cat got worms so she got two shots around 3 weeks apart and my vet said something about every so often she'll need drops throughout the year. Is that necessary?

omg your vets a dumbass take you animal out of that practice immediately. You need heart worm medcine for your dog. Have you ever seen a heart full of heart wroms i have, take my advice.

They need it. Trust me. It's worse for animals in areas with a lot of mosquitoes but you're better off playing it safe.

My cat was just diagnosed with heartworm, it's NOT something you want to have to deal with.

Are you talking about Advantage flea prevention, like in this image?

The directions are on the package--the stuff I got was once a month, but read your package (or call up your vet and ask) to make sure.

If your cat (and all other pets) is (are) indoors, and your home flea-free, all you need to do is get your cat (pets) flealess and then continue to keep the fleas out of the house. My cat (indoors) received flea treatment for four months a year ago, then I haven't needed anything else since.

If your cat is outdoors, I'm not entirely sure. Likely you'll keep up with flea treatment every month. Double check with your vet, or likely the receptionist at the vet's office can get you the answer.

It's not necessary if you want your dog to be healthy, no. California has quite a bit of mosquitoes, some places more than others (I live in the central valley, and we have it BAD here). Southern California doesn't have as bad of a problem, so you're safer, but that doesn't mean that your dog can't get it. If your dog DOES get heartworms, it's very difficult and very expensive to treat, not to mention that the treatments can sometimes kill the dogs too.

It's a gamble, but it's your gamble to make.

I'm not sure if its the flea stuff or not, they said it was to protect her from worms, but it drops on the back of the neck.

She's an indoor cat, I'm pretty sure she got the worms from rubbing her face all over our shoes..

Dunno then, never had problems with my pets and worms.

When in doubt, call your vet and ask. It's very unlikely that they'll charge you for a phone call or anything.
