Winged cats have been known to exist since the 19th century, but only a handful of people have actually seen—let alone owned—one. This woman in Sichuan province watched as her beloved kitty grew angel wings on his back last summer after a bunch of female cats tried to mate with him. "Many female cats in heat came to harass him, and then the wings started to grow," she said.

Geneticists have a less romantic theory. They believe it could be a genetic defect, a skin condition, or the result of poor grooming.

Lucky her, she can get a two course meal out of that cat and additional fur from that beast.
>> OMG op Darn op!
Omg lawl! Op.. dont know if youre just uknowing, but if thats wings, my cat, grows wings all the time. Thats Just fur, that has been detached from the body. Wich makes long parts of hair. It has nothing to do with Wings -.-. for the record, its only long haired cats, that can grow those "Wings" as you say, but still its only hair detached from the body!

They're actual wings, with muscle and everything. The cats can even move them I think. Too bad they can't fly really. :(

actually selective mating does come about the results of mutations they did this with birds. They glued beads with feathers attached to them to the back of birds without feather crests and the females were attracted to it.

again, I just can't tell if this is a troll or a complete idiot.
But since this is only /an/, my guess is idiot.

They're not "wings" at all, unless you people define wings are useless flaps of matted fur and/or mutated appendages that serve no purpose.
Because that's exactly what they are.
They would be wings if they actually served the purpose of wings.

wing (w?ng)
n.
1.One of a pair of movable organs for flying, as the feather-covered modified forelimb of a bird or the skin-covered modified digits of the forelimb of a bat.

2.Any of usually four membranous organs for flying that extend from the thorax of an insect.

3.A winglike organ or structure used for flying, as the folds of skin of a flying squirrel or the enlarged pectoral fin of a flying fish.

Penguin and ostrich wings are vestigial. Unless those skin flaps are going to help that cat fly or he's descended from flying cats, those aren't wings.

Is mostly right. Most reports of winged cats are just long haired cats with a skin desease. It's not all fur though, there are usually some small flops of skin holding the "wing" together.
>> Anonymous
It looks to me like they're malformed legs that are growing on the side of body. Doesn't make sense that they would suddenly "appear" though.

If you mean matted fur, that happens to every long-haired animal without proper grooming. Usually skin issues are things like mange.

Matted fur would be dirty and clumpy. The fur in that picture is too soft and fluffy to be matted.

No, you don't seem to understand the "skin issue" causing cat "wings". It's a hereditary condition causing abnormal stretching of the skin. It happens to other species, including humans, too. Looks real freaky.
