Sup /an/, okay, so I decided that I'm going to get a small pet. I'm torn between a hamster or a pair of gerbils. What do you think? Or, is there anything else that I should consider?

This same thread occurs every day.
Let me say the obligatory:
Hamsters suck, they may be cute but they're nothing but cunts and bastardly things that will bite the shit out of you if you choose to wake them up. There may be exceptions. This is rare.
No, don't get one.
Gerbils are good pets, however. I do reccomend, STRONGLY, that you get a rat, and a male one. They're smart and will happily relax on your shoulder/lap all day. Really lovable and even trainable.
If you're one of those fucks that says "Rats are gross!!" "Rats smell!!" I will murder you in your sleep.

I agree about hamsters, and let me add their piss will smell your house up forever.

However, so do rat's piss. And they piss on everything. I know this, I had one, I loved it, but the bitch pissed on fucking EVERYTHING.

Gerbils are your best bet, they don't smell and are clean. Make sure you get 2 of the same sex, please.

I agree with this post as well.

I have had hamsters, rats, mice, and gerbils. Hamsters are definatley emo little bastards, and they are very prone to bite. As others have said, exceptions exist but they are indeed rare.

Rats are cool, don't get me wrong--but I found gerbils to be just as fun to play with. The advantage with gerbils is that they really are cleaner than rats. Being a desert animal they have VERY little urine and both their droppings and their urine are essentially odorless. Rats, mice, and hamsters smell more and are more work to clean up after. Rats are a bit more sociable and smarter than gerbils, but the difference is very small. I'd much rather have the less smell and cleanup associated with gerbils.

Seriously...? My rats never did, and the smell was never unbearable. Hamsters DO smell like utter shit. OP, never even consider a hamster. I don't know how people can get past the 'research' phase. Do you just consider it because its cute and popular?

Thanks anon, you validated everything I researched online. I'm going to go with a pair of gerbils.

hey guys i plan on getting rats, and 2 questions

1) which is better: rabbit cage or bird cage with extra levels? since you said they are a little smelly i think it might be hard to clean

2) male or female?

1) Neither. Get a rat cage. It should have multiple levels and the bars should be less than 1/2 apart, otherwise their feet can get stuck and break their little legs. Use paper bedding, NOT cedar, as they are allergic to it. Please google 'rat care'.

2) It depends. Males are generally slower and cuddlier, while females are more active and playful.

This rat pet you all speak of seems lovely.
Is it hard to train them?
Could they be tought to use a litterbox?

There are cheaper ferret cages that would work.

Rat cages should be at least 3 levels (and probably around 3ft. tall) if you're going to have a pair.

uhhuh

can you give an estimate maximum bar spacing that would stop adult female mice?

Thought you were looking at rats

Mice should probably be kept in an aquarium as they're too small and might escape every wire cage

Answer should be obvious.

Had a couple of hamsters a year ago. Only fed them like twice a day but they got fat quite easily.

Yeah, I made a similar post last week, and ended up getting a couple gerbils. I hear males get along better than females, but I didn't have much of a choice. The pet store I got them from only had males.

the only reason to have gerbils is to feed them to me!

Aquariums are bad becasue they limit air circulation. That means that your critters will smell even more than normal, and it is also easier for them to catch respitory tract diseases. A cage is a better idea.

An adult mouse can squeeze through a hole the size of a U.S. dime, and if it is bar spacing, it can be even smaller. I would make sure the open area is about 1/4". That is typical for mouse cages you can buy at pet stores and also those used in labs that work with mice.

yeah sorry i meant rat

One thing to be careful with when you have gerbils: they can "de-clan." Look it up.

I found both of mine (females) one morning covered in blood. They lived, but I could never keep them in the same cage again.

rats are the best "small" rodent pets. get a big fat male rat and a non aquarium cage. if you can, get a rodent pet as a baby so you can make sure they're friendly.
