I know this picture is not the best but does anyone have an idea of what bug this is?
I've been living in south Texas for about 5 years and i've never seen one of these before

It's hard to tell. Can you get a better photo?

If not, did it have wings?

I was going to say it was a weta but you say you live in south Texas. Also there really isn't a size reference in the photo.

The board it's sitting on is 5.5 inches wide and 0.5 inch thick.

OP here it was about 3-4 inches long and it didn't look like it had wings, but I could be wrong

Jesus Fucking H. Christ. From the OP pic, it looks about the size of a human head.

I've lived in south texas for 20+ years and I've never seen an insect like that one.

Though, I'm thinking your length measurement is WAY off. That board it is sitting on looks like a fence picket, which as 256668 said, are about 5" wide and one-half inch thick. Note the bug is about twice as long as the board is thick, which would make it about 1" long, maybe a little longer.

Please go look at a ruler and ask yourself how long it was. Most people are notoriously poor at estimating measurements without an actual measuring device handy.

My guess is that it is a wood boring beetle of some kind, perhaps a longhorn beetle. Though, it is very hard to tell without a better photograph. They are common in Texas but they are rarely seen becasue they spend most of their life inside a tree.

It looks like a cottonwood borer beetle. http://museum.utep.edu/chih/theland/animals/invertebrates/insects/cottonwoodborer.htm for more info and a few pictures.
