I must have gotten a mutant hamster then, because mine wasn't a 'peabrained mean biting little thing', and he lived for about 5 years. Mork (yes, that was his name, stfu I was like 12) was a cool dude for a hamster. He had a three-story wire cage with little ramps and stuff to chill on, and he used to actually dangle from the bars at the top of the cage and go across them like monkey bars of death. (Then again he also used to barrel roll down the ramps of the landings for amusement, too.) The guy also used to love one or two dry Kix cereal in the morning before I went to school - and he used to chill on my shoulder all the time when I was watching TV. Also used to sleep on top of his house like Snoopy. On the other hand a friend of mine got gerbils as her boyfriend is allergic to cats/dogs, and had some trouble with them dying within weeks of getting them home, likely because of improper care at the pet store.
Rats need as much attention as dogs to be really 'beneficial' pets, especially if you wanna handle them. They're intelligent for rodents and some can be taught tricks and stuff. I've been wanting one for quite some time - but cats + rat (especially my outdoor cat who already brings me dead mice) = catering.
