Alright /an/ I've got a bit of a problem.

You see I'm going to be getting my female toy poodle fixed. Simple right. Now the problem is, my parents want to take her to our privately owned vet at the same time we get our cat fixed(takes care of it all in one day)

The vet quoted me the price of over 200 dollars to get the spay done. $100+ for the spay, and another 100 for blood work because she's over a year old(she was a 1 1/2 years old when I got her) I found a city run vet that will charge less then 40 to do the spay.

My mom will take both animals into our vet, but if I take her to the county run, I have to take a day off of work since they don't do spays on weekends and there's no kennel so they won't keep her overnight.

My mom didn't like the place the last time she took one of our dogs to it(but that was a long time ago), and I've heard from multiple people that they liked it and didn't have any problems.

so, what do you think /an/ do I swallow the 200+ bill to take her to our vet, or lose a days wages(which comes out to about 80 bucks) and take her to the county vet? Cost wise it makes sense for the county, but my parents aren't keen on the place, and our vet has always done a good job with our animals. Either way she's going to get spayed and I thought I'd get the opinion of /an/ and also what they think of county run places.

Whose money is it?
Whose dog is it?

OP here. It's my dog and my money. Either way, I'm going to be fully paying for her spay.

I'd go to the cheaper place, to be honest. It's not your mom's money, so her opinion, while appreciated, doesn't matter. And even though you'll be off work, it still comes out to cheaper than $200.

Ask your vet or the staff and be sure to tell him/them that it's an issue of money 200 on the one side 120 (40+80) on the other. Have they ever heard anything bad about the county vet recently.

People tend to be psychotic about their aminals and if a place does a shitty job, I think they'll bitch to other vets about it. I have zero problems with county places.

Lastly, if you get bad vibes when you walk into the place, don't hesitate to walk back out. Say you left the stove on or something. I trust vibes a lot.

What do your vibes say when you click on /b/?

I'd go with the more expensive vet. If he is known for doing good jobs then it is worth to pay more, especially when it is just a once in a lifetime treatment.
I had pets since I was 6 (I'm 28 now) and have had some bad experiences with vets too, one of our cats actually died because a vet misdiagnosed his pneumonia with being scared. Yes. Being scared.
That lady said the reason for the cat to be panting like a dog after playing for hours is that "he must have got scared because of the noises from the construction site in front of our apartment building".
Well, now I know better.

Depends, really. Ask your vet the reason why he charges so much more than the county vet when the operation is the same thing.. Ask what the differences are between him and the county vet.
I've always used the county vet for my cats. They've done excellent jobs on them. Personally, I'd go with the County, but you need to find out details. Even the vets around here don't have such a huge difference in price.

Example, when I get my cat neutered, at the county, it'll be about $40, anywhere else about $50 or 60, not a big difference.

i agree 200 is steep for this procedure. is it the bloodwork that is running the cost up so much? definitely ask the vet about it.
