where does one buy a nautilus?

In the Indo-Pacific area of the world.

you dont.

It wouldn't be too difficult to obtain one.(For a pretty hefty fee, anyway.)
They're fairly low maintenance and easy to take care of, so I can see keeping one as a pet.

Even in public aquariums they don't survive very long in captivity. They require an expensive water chiller, red lights and a dark room because anything else will stress and kill them, and in the wild they regularly migrate thousands of feet up and down the water column. Keeping them alive for more than a few days in the home aquarium is considered a feat and even public aquariums consider them difficult.

>>213273
"fairly low maintenance" is a relative assessment, maybe>>213214is used to genetically engineering hemophiliac mutants that breathe methane and shit angry ferrets. Nautiluses would be pretty low maintenance in comparison.
>> Anonymous
I believe it was discussed in lenth what would you need to keep one as a pet, it was either here or on some randome fishboard.
Essentualy you are looking for high (from 5m and up) tank with big volume, cold and very clean water, minimum to no light both in the tank and in the room. Of course you should keep it in species-only aquarium. So if you are a evil mad scientist you can have a nautilus as your pet, after spending some major money and reorganising your underground base to include 30000 g tank.
Short answer - if you have to ask then you are not ready.

That's an octopus, and most of them have a natural lifespan of less than a year.
>> Anonymous
>>213662
I wish Octopi lived longer, then they could learn some pretty impressive feats.
>> Anonymous
>>213675
If they could live for 70 years, they'd be running this planet already. Just be happy their short lifespan prevents them from becoming our overlords.
>> Anonymous
>>213687
What could they do? They live in the water. Nothing, that's what.
>> Anonymous
>>213697

Actually, if you saw that "The Future is Wild" or whatever special they had on Animal Planet a while back, they talk about how octopi could become the next dominant species on Earth.

Wut.

Back in the 90's it was thought that octopi were incredibly smart and possibly even sentient but over the last few years new research has placed their intelligence somewhere between that of a housecat and small parrot... a lot dumber than people thought.

It's still impressive though, considering that cephalopods brains and eyes developed independently and parallel to that of chordates.
>> Mr. Bubbles !!DLJ3bQ7yunJ
>>213697
They regularly break out of aquariums, slide across the floor, break into another tank, and eat everything inside. They are smart enough to go back to their own tank and close the lid to stop people from realizing whats happening.

The only reason they dont seem very smart is because most of them live less than 4 years. Think about a 4-year-old human--theyre dumb as rocks. If octopusses had a human lifespan, we would all be screwed.

That's damn impressive by invertebrate standards, though.

Octopus can use rudimentary tools - they often use a piece of rock to open a shellfish.

There was a story about how sharks kept going missing in an aquarium tank and they set up a camera to see what was going on. Turns out the octopus they recently moved in had been killing and eating the things.

Well it's true. Octopus live for like 2 years and they're incredibly smart and can learn tons of things for such a short life-span. They adapt to environments and have amazing memories...Octopus learn that when they're getting attacked by Morays that they somehow figure out the way the moray breaths and suffocate it, usually they die, but they take out the moray in the process. Look for the vid on youtube.

Sorry man. All I see is a crt monitor and ass-cheap set of computer dynamics. I would strongly advise you against buying a nautilus - you dont look like a man who could easily waste money on a pet that is going to die in the first day.
I dunno, maybe you are an experienced aquariumist with years of saltwater experience, 10000+ gallons of tanks and a PhD in marine biology, in wich case yes, you can get a new tank, set it up using short cuts, put a nautilus in there after a week of tanks running, and get babies from said nautilus. Thats possible, but people like this do not usualy post on 4chan. All I see from your posts is an inexperienced dude who think he has money to burn.
Now if your nautilus survives and would be doing great - hurray to you, but I would bet 100 bucks against a bottlecup that this is not going to happen.

Nautilus as pet in HK.
>> Anonymous
>>215625
Puting a nautilus in 20 gallon tank is not something I would consider a proper care. Hell, you can have a redtail catfish in a ten gallon and some petstores do that.
The point is, caring about nautilus is expensive and hard, they are boring as pets (its like floating snail, much dumber then octopi or cuttlefishes), they develop boyancy and colaration abnormalities in captivity, and are not meant to be kept as pets. If you can provide the proper care it needs - congradulation, but people like this do not come to 4ch asking "lol giys were do i buy nautilus i am rich man and have mony"
>> Anonymous
>>215623
You can also buy moorish idols and the juveniles of large parrotfish at many aquarium shops across the world. If their supplier catches it and people are buying they sell them, regardless of whether they have the slightest chance of surviving in the home aquarium. Most dragonets wind-up starving to death in tanks without sumps because people don't know how to accomodate them but they're still readily available and cheap.

op here, dunno who wrote that but it was not me. My fish tank glasses finally arrived today. Luckily they came early in the morning so i could start immediately. I don't have that much experience yet, but my dad and uncle have. I recently started living on my own and at home we always had a big aquarium and i loved the fish and my dad taught me stuff about it. So now im getting my own there wont be only nautili in it though. Im getting some other saltwater fishes 2 .
But about the fish tank, it went quite well installing it in my cellar (i was planning on doing this for a long time :> but i first wanted to know what i wanted to put in so i wouldn't have on that is to small or to big.

I'll keep u guys posted and post a picture when i'm done.

>>216080
For a moment I would consider that you might not be trolling.
>Im getting some other saltwater fishes 2 .
Bad choice. Big fish would bully nautilus, small fish would be eaten by him, no second option. You might be able to put some sea stars and snails in there, but everything else would be devoured by nautilus or will kill him.
>My fish tank glasses finally arrived today.
Are you gluing tank yourself/geting someone to custom make it? What is the volume of the tank?
And I hope you run your tank with bioload at least 3 month before aquiring nautilus.
All in all though nautilus is not a pet for novice aquariumist, to keep it healthy you need lots of skills. I dont think pure luck or entusiasm will work here.
>> Anonymous
>>216226
its a 381 x 388 x 213cm tank
it holds about 18,160 l
Ive had more aquariums(yeah even saltwaters) yet this is the first time im gluing one myself. (Yes i calculated the weight and blablabla)
It was not that expensive to be honest. Around 930 euro for the glass panels and 1,063 euro for the fiberglass.

if you but non predator fish with nautili they wont bug him. and i already knew that they ate small fish.
The nautili will not be here son it will take up to 2 weeks more, but the other fish will be put in soon.
I wont be running my tank for 3 months with bioload.

>>216845

>> Anonymous
>>216845

"cycling" a tank simply means that you are getting all the proper nitrogen cycle bacteria established. Doing this "naturally" by starting with a clean tank and adding some very small fish takes a while. But, it is entirely possible to get a tank established much faster than that.

The trick is to "seed" the tank with bacteria. One way is to incorporate some water from an established tank. Adding live rock or live sand will work as well. You can also take some filter media from an established tank. A commercial option is to buy some "aquarium bacteria" concentrate. All of these techniques give the nitrogen cycle bacteria a huge head start and you can theoretically get the tank's bacteria population established in just a few days. Of course, you must test your water to be sure! There's no sense in taking chances, especially with expensive/rare inhabitants such as a Nautilus.

It wouldn't matter even if you could have enough salt water, they live so deep, that the LACK of high pressure would soon kill it. They were ment to be in a dark, cold, high pressure environment. It is the same reason why they can't get baby giant squid to survive on the surface. You couldn't live in space without a PRESSURIZED ship, it's the same for them, they just need more pressure.
