Sob story inc. This is my cat, Mai. She's a stray my mom found in her garage that we nursed back from starvation/dehydration that I took in. Sweetest little fluff who purrs even if you give her a bath...

Anyway, long story short..the vet thinks my cat has feline infectious peritonitis virus. Sunday she had a high fever of 105 that has persisted, even with antibiotics and plenty of pain. She stopped using her back legs which seemed to be where the pain is, she'd just drag herself around by her front legs. Today she doesn't even try to move anywhere and doesn't even whine if I stroke her back legs, they seemed paralyzed. She stopped eating or drinking anything yesterday, as well as not using the litter box. The vet gave me new meds yesterday and informed me if there was no change in 24 to 48 hours, then she had FIP and had to be put down.

24 hours is up in one hour and she hasn't improved but my mom who has worked as a vet and now a nurse thinks I should wait till PM EST. Am I delaying the inevitable? Anyone else every have a cat come down with FIP?

What you have not told is did she develop the typical symptoms of FIP such as chronic weight loss, diarrhea, accumulation of fluid or jaundice. I've never heard of FIP causing leg pain or paralysis, though I've heard some symptoms may be unexpected. The only clear symptoms pointing towards FIP in this case seem to be the fever and lack of appetite. If this really is the case, I'd wait a while more. There's a chance it's not FIP.

She had no weight to begin with and hasn't used the litter box since this monday, so there's no confirmation of that. She's got the neurological symptoms of the dry version of FIP and is the ideal age to fall to this as well. She has the full body shivers and is pretty out of it now, not moving from where I placed her this morning and unresponsive to anything now. The vet picked up on a lack of response on her left side and even consulted a neurological specialist who said VIP off the bat. Either way, I have a paralyzed cat who wont do anything, unresponsive to medication that's in major pain...

man this sounds bad OP. i don't know much about FIP but just tell yourself this when the time comes to say goodbye... you rescued a cat, a stray kitten. she could have easily been hit by a car or some demented person could have tortured her. you did the right thing by bringing her in and nursing her back to health. you gave her a good life, and i'm sure that she knows it. i know some people say animals don't have feelings and don't care about the people that care for them, but i believe that they do. Mai was very lucky to find you. Good luck

This. If it were me, I'd wait a little longer. Vet said up to 48 hours, right? I'd wait that long. The cat's probably going to be in pain though, but if there's a chance that she could recover, I'd take it

From the wikipedia page of FIP, it sounds like your cat has it.
I'm so sorry, OP.

Sounds like FIP. Sucks, OP. if it is progressing that quickly it won't be too long now.

Hang in there OP... be there for your pet and do the right thing.

Still no word from OP it seems. =( Hope everything is okay...

Sorry, OP. But look at it this way: If your kitten does die, then it had the disease all along and the end was inevitable. But instead of living out on the streets, you took it in and made it happy.
I'm sure she would thank you.

I hope your cat gets better, OP.
