Hey /an/. Got a quick question, what do you think a badger would be like as a pet? Do you think it'll be hard to tame one or raise it from birth, 'cos I think having a badger as a pet would be awesome.
Pic related. Let's discuss badgers.

They say that about Pitbulls. I think. I'm just making that up but I assume it's the same.

That's why I want one. Saw one fending off a fox easily. They'd be badass to take for walks.
>> Anonymous
keep in mind that the badger is badass and you are not.

They're wild animals. Ask yourself, what could possibly the reason nobody as badgers as pets.

It's a mite difficult to raise an animal that attacks everything it sees. raising it from birth will allay this.

-see that you can get food easily
-make sure it's legal in your area
-raise it from birth (for compatibility)
-keep it out of your yard (burrowing animals will cause damage or escape)
-see if your local vet will treat such an animal

But you can domesticate most animals. Dogs and cats were once wild, y'know.

Advice taken, thanks.

Yeah, like thousands of years ago.

Alligators and crocodiles look way more badass than badgers. Why don't you have them as pets instead of badgers?

Also bear in mind that badgers can carry Bovine Tuberculosis. It's really hard to catch it as opposed to the human strain, but it is possible.

Badgers, wolverines, all the larger smelly weasel-like animals get very hateful with sexual maturity. They're like autistic greedy children. Doesn't /an/ watch animal planet?

>>American badgers will sometimes form a symbiotic relationship with Coyotes. Because coyotes are not very effective at digging rodents out of their burrows, they will chase the animals while they are above ground. Badgers on the other hand are not fast runners, but are well-adapted to digging. When hunting together, they effectively leave little escape for prey in the area.

from the wikipedia

badgers are awesome

they are also mean as fuck, don't bother them for the same reason you don't bother wolverines.

Badgers, (North American), fight fucking bears. There's been several observances of a bear trying to eat a badger and having its eyes or nose ripped out. Badgers turn in their skin and have thick hide.

They also love to dig, and can dig through cement if need be, so your home will get torn apart.

lmao @ the cat in the bottom right!!!
"WTF"!!!!!
i doubt a badger would make much of a pet
theyre very aggressive, even more so towards other badgers, and like a dog, it wold see you as just another badger, so it might just attack you!!!

but then again, ive seen a program where a guy in africa kept a honey badger (regarded as the most aggressive and fearless animal on the planet!!) and it was very affectionate and calm!!

so who knows!!!

even ferrets were altered through selected breeding from their original wild form, y'know

It'll be alright as long as you get one of the European badgers, like the ones in OP's pic. They are actually quite polite.

a badger probably doesn't want you as his owner, i didnt even think they came in groups, i thought they where more indepandant than this... who are these badgers?
is this normal? are the a wild pack of badgers? are they after some badger pussy?
>> Anonymous
Why not a rattlesnake? Wonder how they fare as pets. Well, not really.

Yeah, like he has time to tame the badger. Likely, he won't have time even to care for the basics of the most trivial pet.

Don't know about American badgers, but our European kind live in large family groups

i know people say you can remove the scent organs for skunks and ferrets etc, but not only do badgers STINK, even after the surgery, they can get mean as hell. i had to shoot a badger while hunting last year.
(no, im not talking about a wolverine, i had to shoot a fucking badger)

I think they recently discovered some minor social behavior between badgers that were related to each other. Not sure on the details.

You completely a lack an understand of domestication. Domestication takes hundreds of years. Dogs and Cats weren't always housepets, they were bred and bred and bred, and the ones that bred were the most tame and docile. Dogs, Cats, Cows, Horses etc. are domestic because of their genes, not because YOU WUV DEM SO MUCH.

Have fun getting your intestines ripped out and torn to shreds by a vicious wild animal.

Domestication takes hundreds of years (well, it depends on the lifespan of the animal obviously), but "taming" does not. Turning a badger into something like a cat or dog probably won't happen, but raising one from a cub could yield one that would be able to bond with its human.

Not a badger, but take a look at www.qadesh.com.

I think OP should get a badger and ask his parents to come here talk about what happened. I promise I will nominate him for the Darwin Awards.
