While visiting some friends in Alaska, I noticed this rather strange plant growing in their flowerbed. They didn't know and assumed that it was either some kind of weed or something the previous owner of the house planted and forgot about (they have only been living there for about 8 months). My dad, a decent gardener, says it looks like rhubarb. Can anyone confirm this?

It is Rhubarb. You generally don't see them flower because people take down the flowering stalks as it takes most of the plant's energy/food supplies to create the flower.
