They're not venomous in the classical sense. I have never kept these snakes, but from what I've heard they're not bad for beginners, they usually are easy to care for. They get bigger than your run-of-the-mill cornsnake, and they tend to be a bit more defensive, but I don't think that a snappy snake is bad for beginners (quite the opposite).
Just do some research, talk to other snake keepers, buy some books (and read them!), buy or build an enclosure, equip it with the necessary stuff and then buy the snake.
