Get a dog, you don't deserve a cat if you ask which one is better.

Dog if you want something that will be an active part of your life, and vice versa.

Cat if you just want something to cuddle every once in awhile, but generally keeps to itself.

Do you like cats or dogs more? Do you like going for a walk every day whether it rains or shines, whether you are feeling up to it or not? Do you like to find dead animals on your porch? Do you like the smell of a wet dog? Do you mind having some of your furniture covered in scratches? Do you want to scoop the poop out of a sidewalk or a sandbox? Do you want your pet to be able to curl next to you in bed without pushing you out? Do you prefer being drooled on or being clawed? Do you prefer to be waked up by barking or meowing? Do you want a pet that may not be able to handle losing you from its sights or one that may not care whether you come back at all?

All of these things matter. Choose wisely.

The "finding dead animals on your porch" applies to both of them, by the way. The dog will just keep it around until it rots.

I'm a "dog person" but prefer cats as pets because I'm a lazy ass that sits at the computer all day.

I'd go with a cat. Dogs are great but they have that disturbing doggie odor. Plus you have to walk them every day, train them, socialize them, blah blah... Cats essentially take care of themselves, you add food, water, and a good scratching post. Both make great companions, what matters most is how much of your time you can devote to caring for them, and dogs eat up much more of your free time than cats do.

Great post, srsly. OP, read this 100 times and contemplate. What habits really get under your skin? What would you LEAST like to deal with? Imperfect furniture? Barking? Daily long walks? Scooping a litter box?

Visit an animal shelter and check out the dogs and cats. Talk to the workers, tell them your situation and they'll try to match you with a pet they think you'll like.
