Overweight cat needs a regimen Anonymous
Hey, /an/. Kitty G here is 12 years old. I've spoiled her a bit too much. It shows in her weight.

Right now, she's eating Purina Indoor Cat chow -- about 2 cups a day.

We live in an apartment, so outdoor excercise is not really feasible. Instead we play daily with a laser pointer and do a fair bit of wrestling.

Can anyone recommend a better feeding regimen than 1 cup in the morning and 1 cup at dinner to help control her weight?

Uhm, this is easy. Less food. Try 3/4 cup at a time instead of 1 cup.

There are also lower-calorie (aka "weight control) pet foods on the market. You could try that.

me again.

I just wanted to clarify that the idea is to feed her LESS food than you've been doing in the past. 3/4 cup (or whatever) is not a magic number. Just feed her a bit less food than you have been in the past.

is kitty cat lypo out of the question

You could try switching to a weight-control food and feeding her less actual food. Are you reading the instructions on the back of the catfood bag? It should have recommendations on feeding schedule/amount.

One thing you can do is switch her over to wet food. There was a huge thread on here talking about the benefits of wet food for cats a few months ago, and one of the definite benefits was weight loss. I've seen this true in my own cats. Before these cats, all of our cats were fed dry food and were always overweight. One of my current cats has digestive problems and was prescribed low-residue wet cat food as part of her treatment. We feed her and her sister the low-residue wet food mixed in with a regular wet food (they won't eat the low residue stuff alone, must taste bad or something) and then provide them with dry food during the day. I would rather have them on only wet food, but they're my family's cats and not mine.

If you do decide to switch your cat to wet food, you should probably do so slowly. Completely changing your cats diet very suddenly will probably cause her some discomfort and possibly even give her the shits.

i'm a different anon than OP, but have the same problem essentially. but i only feed my cat 3/4 cup a day at the most (probably closer to 1/2) of iam's weight control..and have been for the past several months with no change in her weight. i took her to the vet, she said to just keep trying to play with her, feed her less, etc. my cat's lazy as hell, though...she'll chase a laser pointer for a few mins, then get tired and just look at it. same thing with other toys. if i try to wrestle w/ her she just flops on her side and lazily tries to grab&gnaw

anyways, wet food = expensive and relatively messy. is there some good cheap wet food?

my old cat was 18lbs, but that was more muscle than flab. This cat would chase foxes off the property. I miss him... fucking cancer.

That is a huge cat.

yeah, even though my cat is fat, she's still as fast if not faster than normal sized cats...at 15-16 lbs she's like a high-speed bowling ball though

man, high density animals like that have a knack for landing a paw in your crotch when you least expect it, that thing must send people to the emergency room

I imagine the rolling would get annoying, but the heavy breathing and flailing limbs might be like a foot massage.

perhaps get her a cat wheel
>> Anonymous
Holy shit, I feed my 30 pound dog that much. Feed her less.

To be a bit more helpful, I'll add you shouldn't expect her to drop weight fast. Just slowly cut back so she doesn't think she's being starved, then expect a few months before you see significant results.
