Mine just bit someone for the first time ever yesterday XD
An it was my boyfriend.

She just shed, so he was about to get the skin out of the cage. He had just eaten fishsticks and I said "Babe, your hands are going to smell like fish." As a warning. And what does he do?
Sticks his hand in there anyway, not listening to me. Sure enough she whipped around, and just as he noticed and started to withdraw his hand, she got his finger.
And I laughed my ass off at him.

Then I reached in and grabbed her and gave her a kiss for being a good snake and teaching silly boyfriends lessons about hands smelling like food. :3

>> Anonymous
>>296165
I feed her usually once every two weeks, a fuzzy and an adult mouse.
I've had people say she's big enough to eat rats now, but she has a hard time eating adult mice as it is, I think she might hurt herself on a rat. =\
She's not starving or anything, she's just kinda small. Only a year old.
>> Anonymous
you could feed her more often. a snake being small can be normal or it can be a sign that didn't eat as much as t should have when it was growing.
>> Anonymous
>>296167
Mine was always chubby.

I fed her every week. First pinkies, then "hoppers", and now she's on adult mice. Never anything wider than she is at her widest.

I may need to step her up to 2 adult mice at once or a small rat soon.
>> Anonymous
>>296173
I think I'm gonna step her up to two adult mice every feeding.
She's in a growing spurt at the moment. It seems every month or every other month she's shedding, which she wasn't doing when I first got her.
She sheds really bad though D: Even when it's like 90% humidity in the tank and I spray her constantly with shedding aid, water, mists, and every other snake spray in the book, she still manages to have partially dry sheds.

I think I managed to pick the oddball snake out of the bunch, but at least I got an uber-affectionate one.

When she's starting to turn grey, give her a lukewarm water bath every day. It really helps.

Soaking also makes is easy to peel off whatever she leaves behind. Mine tends to leave her spine un-peeled. But she also makes full peels herself.

There's a large piece of wood in there that has a lot of rough edges. It was some odd shaped log we found and chopped up for her, plus I have like 10 rose rocks, a piece of petrified tree, and a sandstone in there.

When I first got her, she had dry sheds REALLY bad, to the point it once ripped the scales off part of her spine ;-; I'm glad it's not nearly that bad anymore.

Love 'em. Love my ball, Raphael. Looking into a hypo Burm at the pet store, but it's getting to be a toss up between her, and a mangrove monitor.

I'd like to get into venomoids (snakes with their venom gland surgically removed) but 1. there's no sellers in the area or in Oregon as far as I know. and 2. The cost of buying plus shipping and handling with the 35 percent chance of having it die in transit...

Gaboon pit vipers are stunning, and fat.

A gaboon without it's wide head bulging with venom glands is a fucking blood python dick head.
The reptile/hot community hates your kind.
If you want to own a hot snake then you have to accept the fact that if it bites you, then you die. Otherwise get a corn snake. What is the beauty and majesty of a venomous snake that you pick up and play with like a boa.

Personally I don't give half a shit what you think. Rage all you want. How you feel about something is your business, but getting pissed off because something doesn't conform to your standards, that's pretty childish.

Venomoids, in my opinion and the opinion of many other herp keepers, do not suffer ill effects from having their venom sacks removed, if done properly and by a trained Vet. The only change is that their food must be pre-killed, which most people do so now a days to prevent injuries to their snakes/lizards. Also, is makes it possible for educational studies, and hands on experience, which wouldn't be possible if the snake was Hot.

tl;dr: people bitching cause "it's not the natural way"...

Animals are things.

Declaw, devenomsack, degonad, whatever. It's not like we're killing them. And if done to captive-bred [where applicable] at a younger age, it's not like they're really missing anything.
>> Tired Anon !EHsj4EGwIQ
     File :-(, x)
>>296310
That's a pretty harsh way to say things. Technically animal enthusiasts don't see their pets, or collections (term used loosely) as Things. More like companions, but you'd be correct in terms of seeing them as Property, which is legally defined as Things.
>> Anonymous
feeding prekilled takes away a lot of the risk of the snake getting hurt by its meal as well as getting parasites from its meal.

degonnading is pretty harsh but necessary for cats and dogs and maybe snakes that pose a threat of becoming invasive but no matter how necessary it is it is still an absolutely horrible thing to do regardless of the age of the animal.
>> Anonymous
>>296321
I love my pets. People just whine too much.

But sometimes altering them is best.

I don't declaw, my cats are outdoor. If you declaw your cats, that's fine. I know it boils some of your guys' water, but what could you do, y'know?

I'd devenomize a snake, though. But frankly, I wouldn't want a venomous snake in the first place. Besides, contrictors give better hugs.
>> Tired Anon !EHsj4EGwIQ
>>296340feeding prekilled takes away a lot of the risk of the snake getting hurt by its meal as well as getting parasites from its meal.

True, I've seen some horrible wounds from mice/rat bites. And some owners have a bad habit of just throwing the mouse in there without making sure the snake is actually interested. I prefer frozen then microwaved, killing bacteria. It takes a while to cool the mouse down though, the only drawback.

But having 'altered' venomous snakes, I simply can't see anything wrong with it, especially if you work in a hands on educational facility. It allows children, or general public, the chance to touch a snake (if it's been socialized and used to handling in small doses) that they'd never get if the snake was a Hot.

But, it's all a personal choice, which the whole of it should be for personal and public safety, not for the idea of "oh, I have a poisonous snake, I'm cool now" conception. Snakes aren't accessories.

Sup guys? I'm hte second poster with the skinny Python XD
She just bit me tonight for the first time ever! And yesterday she bit my boyfriend, but he had it coming with his hands smelling like food and all.

However, she has never even looked at me in a way of biting. I've always been able o handle her however, and she'd just chill out. I've also always been able to rearrange her terrarium while she's still in it (cleaning and whatnot) and she never cared.
So I started to do that same tonight, cleaning out her poop and digging up some of the rocks that managed to get burried in her bedding. As I was pulling the vines out, all the sudden I feel her little teeth on my palm, and then see her quickly withdrawl. It didn't hurt, but it did draw blood and I still have quite a few marks.
But now this behavior has got me worried. Why is she suddenly so aggressive? We fed her yesterday, so she's not hungry. She was nice and warm and it wasn't like I just grabbed her and moved her all of the sudden. I let her wake up first and come out a little like always.

I'm very sad D: She's always been so loving and cuddly.
>> Tired Anon !EHsj4EGwIQ
>>296512
She probably NOMed on your hand cause she's hungry. You were moving around, so that probably stimulated her enough to want to strike.

Another possibility is that you startled her, the loud noises (vibrations really) and if she was on the ground, then a large person standing over her could seem intimidating.

Don't worry too much, if she's not hungry, then try picking her up in an hour or two to gauge if the strikes at you when handling.

That was probably the stupidest thing I've read on 4chan all week. Should people devenomize blue-ring octopuses so that kids will have the opportunity to pet dangerous octopuses, too?
>> Anonymous !EHsj4EGwIQ

Is this a topic on the Octopus? I wasn't aware of the subject change...

We're talking about snakes, not any other animal. Leave your analogies at the door sir. And if you don't like the post, then don't read/repost to it.

Besides, I'm tired of puritists. If you feel it's so ungodly terrible to devenomize a snake, then take up some petition banning it. Do something useful with your time than arguing on 4chan. Would you complain about dogs and cats being altered? About trimming your parrot's feathers? Or the use of vaccinations in pets? Those don't naturally occur in nature, so from your logic, people shouldn't do it.

Back to snake love, post more snakes.
>> Anonymous
>>296548
You stated that devenomizing a snake would be worthwhile if it gives kids a chance to touch a venomous snake that they wouldn't be able to touch otherwise, on account of its being venomous. Debates on devenomizing aside, that was a pretty fucking idiotic statement and I think the octopus analogy was pretty accurate. Why wouldn't it be? Does touching venomous snakes have some kind of therapeutic properties? Is it going to provide some cure for cancer that touching one of the countless other non-venomous snakes in existence won't? Is that how touching venomous/non-venomous snakes are completely different from touching venomous/non-venomous octopuses? I mean, you're devenomizing the fucking thing anyway, right?

So, you're saying snakes don't have personalities as well? Well, that's far from the truth.
All reptiles have VERY unique personalities, they just can't express it like a dog or cat can. Snakes can be extremely affectionate towards their owners. No, they don't have the memory of a mammal to know their owner loves them so they love them back, but snakes recognize that the giant human gives them food and warmth and protects them from other predators.

MAybe she wasn't loving as much as she was tolerant of me. Either way, she bit me and it surprised me. I'm sure it was probably my fault for disturbing her a day after she ate.

Um. I don't recall saying anything about personality. My turds have personality. Just don't be surprised when an animal bites you no matter how yiff you are about it. Also, you cannot domesticate reptiles. Try leaving your reptile alone for two or three weeks then stick your hand in the cage. There is no affection in reptiles. Your anthropocentric views are going to get your ass bit. Enjoy the ER.
>> Anonymous
I think pretty highly of them... I've got around 60 of various snakes.
>> Tired Anon !EHsj4EGwIQ
>>297103
I'd agree with this, I've seen snakes have varying personality traits, though they're not as extreme as, say, a cat or dog, probably about the same as an iguana or beardie. Hell, my friend had a reticulated python, and her boyfriend decided to slap her for being a bully to their male.. the female Retic turned around and thumped him in the chest, not bite, but actually thumped him with her nose, hard.

Hell I've seen snakes sulk, or even get a bit 'excited' (the only term I can think of for it) when it's handler comes in the room, and not out of hunger either. So, those people who don't think snakes, or other reptiles for that matter, don't have personalities, just aren't paying much attention to their animal, or just don't care cause they express it in more subtle ways.

Bah, anyway, I'm playing ignorant of those argument posts, I'm more interested as to who else has a BP? And MOAR pictures!

"Like most other arthropods, insects have a relatively simple central nervous system with a dorsal brain linked to a ventral nerve cord that consists of paired segmental ganglia running along the ventral midline of the thorax and abdomen. Ganglia within each segment are linked to one another by a short medial nerve (commissure) and also joined by intersegmental connectives to ganglia in adjacent body segments. In general, the central nervous system is rather ladder-like in appearance: commissures are the rungs of the ladder and intersegmental connectives are the rails. In more "advanced" insect orders there is a tendency for individual ganglia to combine (both laterally and longitudinally) into larger ganglia that serve multiple body segments. An insect's brain is a complex of six fused ganglia (three pairs) located dorsally within the head capsule. Each part of the brain controls (innervates) a limited spectrum of activities in the insect's body."

"As creatures having a large, well-developed brain, it comes as little surprise that sharks are conscious. That is, they seem to have a well developed sense of self and non-self, recognizing themselves as distinct from the environment through which they swim. I and others have observed sharks delicately maneuvering just enough to avoid colliding with obstacles (coral heads, divers, anchor lines, shark cages, etc.) in their liquid environment. This suggests that sharks realize that the objects they see are real, having a solidity that can injure them or impair their movement. As predators, sharks can recognize prey and non-prey. Identification of potential prey animals is most likely accomplished through evaluation by various sensory systems – scent, sight, touch, taste, and so on – tempered by experience. Rejection of non-prey animals and inedible objects often depends on tactile and chemical cues obtained when an object is actually in the shark's mouth. There are numerous reports of sharks rejecting food apparently on the basis of texture or taste."

It says snakes have the capacity to LEARN. It says absolutely nothing about the capacity to care, any emotional attachment capabilities, etc. Eublepharine geckos are social reptiles with their own developed means of inter-species communication but outside of the survival and reproductive benefits of living in colonies there's no indication they actually give a flying fuck about one another, let alone any owner. If one isn't able to hunt the others don't catch prey for it, or even leave it food. If it dies its business as usual. There's no emotional capacity, nothing that would indicate the ability to care. You don't get that in reptiles until birds.

...then what IS anon arguing? That they have the capacity to care but don't?
>> Tired Anon !EHsj4EGwIQ
>>297209
Are you retarded or something? Insects don't have that capability because they lack the particular regions of the brain that controls emotional functions. Sharks, however, do have those regions, albeit they are smaller and less active than that of a dog.

And, no, christians don't believe animals even have a soul, so animal biology is probably not one of their courses.

Bloody hell why do people have to be science-ignorant?

The main point is, if you'll just take a moment to quit bitching and actually read, is that people can and will equate human emotions to animals, from an African Gray, to a gold fish. It's in our nature to anthropomorphize things. Whether or not an animal exhibits emotional attachments or not, it's entirely up to the owner and their involvement with the animal.

What's important is whether the animal is safe and healthy in it's enclosure/environment, and if you can say a snake is "happy" because it's healthy, unstressed, and eating properly, then so be it, there's no harm in it what so ever, despite what rage inspired people think.

Go troll /b/ where you belong, since this thread turned from a snake discussion, to nothing but trolling.

No. This isn't The Matrix and everyone isn't Neo. Just because someone believes something doesn't make it true.

Bloody hell why do people have to be science-ignorant?

And now, I'm going to bed.

My apologies to those who were trying to avoid a mess of flaming in the thread.

BRBs are absolutely amazing. It's the one species that I have never owned, but would love to get my hands on. Have an Argentine Rainbow, but they just aren't nearly as pretty.
