anyone know what kind of spider this is?

i found it in my backyard.

Leg position says it's an orbweaver. Can't tell you the exacts.

It's a grass spider, they're not toxic.

i don't think you are right. i think it is more likely an Argiope. "grass spiders" tends to refer to Agelenopsis which don't make webs like that. that spider is an orb weaver of some sort. i have no clue what species and am not even sure on the genus. tough to id.

ventral view of Argiope aurantia. didn't realize that was what their underside looked like since i was just looking at one the other day but i guess i mostly saw the dorsal side.

I too live in northern Illinois and I have to say that these are the coolest spiders you can have in your yard. Find a small bug of some kind and throw it in the web.
