Smooth Collie Anonymous
Hi /an/!
I've been thinking about buyng a puppy for quite a long time. Since our last dog died, I've felt weird, I just don't know how to be without a dog. Well, problem solved! I'me getting a smooth collie quite a soon!

What do you think of this breed?

Not very pretty IMO, but the ones I've met have been very nice.

Those are some ugly dogs. I wouldn't want one.

there are some worse looking dogs out there.
go for it if you want him.

i tend to love the Pembroke welsh corgi; i just got one 2 months ago.(shes only 6months) i nicknamed her Tansoku (stubby legs)

border collies are good too as far as collies go.

OP here
Funny how so many people seem to think that smooth collies are ugly as hell. I always thought they were pretty. But I also like pitbulls and creatures like that.
I thought very long about this before choosing smooth collie. They are quite healthy compared to many other big dogs. I also want a dog to work with, so collie should be fine.

Oh, forgot to say...
I don't really think that it matters what the dog looks like (if you like animals the looks don't matter, right?), as long as it has a good chance at being healthy. Looking pretty is just a bonus. I was going to get a mix but I happened to find this one collie puppy and decided to go for it.

i think they're pretty as far as looks go. i hope they're smarter than the rough kind. I have two rough collies and they are the most stupid dogs i have ever met.

Funny. I've heard every collie owner I know praising their intelligence and ability to "read" people. But I have no personal experience so I can't say...

hey, if the look doesn't matter and you want a healthy dog, go for a (controlled) mixed breed. Then you'll have yourself a nice dog.

Well, as I said in>>79703I was going to get a mix, but this collie puppy came along. I will propably get another dog later and it will be a mix. They are, after all, healthier. However, what I've heard these collies ARE very healthy compared to many other dogs. I wouldn't be taking it otherwise =)

However, I'm interested in hearing opinions about collies since I'm getting one.

I am adopting a husky/smooth collie mix very soon, and he's wonderful. Herding breeds in general are so smart and make great pets. They practically train themselves.

Mixes, even "controlled" mixes, are highly unpredictable. No respectable breeder breeds mixes. No, if you want to know about a dog's history and temperament is go through rescue, or a respectable breeder. Rescues use foster homes who watch over the animals and study their behavior. Breeders raise the dogs from puppies and know the parents' temperament, which is usually passed down to the litter.

they're not ugly,not at all.

OP here. I've talked to some Rescue workers and they all say that mixes are often much healthier than the pure breds. Still, every dog owner who want's to breed mixes should concider the same thing are any other; that the parents are healthy and good natured. Nature tends to fix the problems people make with breeding. I would say that no responsible breeder of a pug, dachshund, great dane etc should breed anything other than mixes. MIxes are unpredictable, but nature often knows better than a human.

Oh wow! That mix sounds just wonderful. I've heard that "They practically train themselves"-thing quite a many times already. Sounds funny.
