Cat's can eat chocolate. And then they die. Hence, they shouldn't eat chocolate even though they can.

Cats can tolerate chocolate slightly better than dogs can.
We have a big fat cat who is OBSESSED with chocolate.. she will crawl up your belly and try to get in your mouth if you're eating some. Occasionally we will share a milk chocolate chip with her.
Dark chocolate has more cacao & therefore is more concentrated and poisonous to animals.

Most cats won't eat chocolate, citrus or mint. If they do want it, a small amount won't hurt them, but a whole chocolate bar will.
Luckily cats aren't as much of fucking pigs as, say, a labrador, and likely won't try to eat a whole chocolate bar.

Pic is aforementioned fatty girl.

My beagle once ate an entire tray of brownies.

He got very close to death and was vomiting and had the screaming shits. It was not a fun experience.

I wonder which part of the chocolate it liked. It can't have liked the sweetness, since cats can't taste sweet, but it may have been cocoa butter. Cats generally like fats.

Since theobromine is the poisonous ingredient in chocoate and white chocolate contains only trace amounts of it, you could test if your cat is actually after the cocoa butter by letting it choose between a small piece of brown chocolate and a piece of white chocolate. If it has no preference, you could give it some white chocolate every now and then.

Had something similar happen, only it was a cake. Dog had no negative reactions though. Lived for another 13 years (she had been 4 when she ate the cake).

I would disgree with tasting sweets just for the fact my cat loves anything sweet. She even eats fruit (unless it's really citrusy).
She also used to eat pickles.
So maybe I just have a weird cat.

Cats can go as far as drinking beer just because that is what they've seen their owners drinking.

He did that, too. He ate half a Devilsfood cake before he got too full to eat anymore. He looked like a potbellied pig for a while.

Also, he couldn't really move.

Cats and dogs can't eat much chocolate without danger to themselves, and KEEP THEM AWAY from raisins, those are almost a death sentence.

Rats, on the other hand, can munch on chocolate as much as they want and only get fat.

That's a myth. My cat will bite your fingers off for a morsel of cupcake.

chocolate is poisonous even to people, but our tolerance for that poison is much higher than smaller animals'. However, if you were to eat enouhg chocolate to poison and kill you, you'd probabyl die of malnutrition first.

Well, they CAN eat it, but they won't.

Cats can't taste sweet things. They don't have the correct taste buds. So they probably would enjoy some savoury stuff much more.

That's like saying water is poisonous... if you drink enough it will kill you.

Water IS slightly poisonous though, especially the phosporated kind.

My cat goes nuts when she sees beer bottles because she loves licking the condensation off. She seems to enjoy textures as much as taste. Also most cats seem to love cherry turnovers from Arby's.

My friend's rats went cuckoo over beer and cider bottle caps, too. It was fun to watch but we had to be careful not to give 'em too many...

Actually, most poisons have beneficial effects if taken in small enough portions, as do other stressors. They kickstart the stress defense and regeneration systems in the cells without causing any real damage. It's called hormesis, look it up. (And no, it has nothing to do with homeopathy, thank you very much.)

Different animals have different tolerances. My manx cat used to love chocolate milk made with Dutch processed cocoa (which has more cacao than something like Nesquik). She never got sick that I was aware of, and lived to the ripe old age of 18.

For a cat to taste anything sweet, it would have to get a mutation (or rather, lots of mutations) reactivating the broken gene for the taste receptor protein needed for detecting sweet tastes. That is the reason why felids can't taste sweet, they simply lost the ability to random mutations a long time ago in the common felid ancestor.

I'm fairly certain it's only dogs that can't eat chocolate. Although I could be wrong, but my cats eat chocolate sometimes and jelly beans and they've not been sick yet.

Theobromine is poison to all carnivorans. Your cats just probably haven't eaten enough for them to suffer any serious consequences. There is a threshold level, after all.

Thats not realy true. Chocolate CAN kill a rat. you can give them small amounts, like one chocolate chip. But that is really all. Especially good to do if they have a resperatory infection because it helps them breath. But as I said, only a small amount.

Or better yet, give it none at all. It's a cat and doesn't need chocolate that would be bad for it's health. If you want to give it treats, BUY CAT TREATS. Dumbass.
