Whats with the bad stigma with rats?

I mean really you'd have to be some kind of fucking moron to walk round thinking "DUHHhhh all rats have the plague..."

yet the world is still filled with these idiots who cant tell the difference between a wild rat and a domesticated one and choose to think it's still 1340s,

so the rats carried the fleas which carried the plague. sounds like the rats did, in fact, carry the plague.
>> Bitter Anon !!WJLRQ1cwCyZ
>>192870
No, they carried a pest. When you say something is a 'carrier', that means they themselves spread the disease. If you have ramsay hunt syndrome, you are a carrier for shingles and chicken pox, despite not actually having shingles and chicken pox.

The black rat did not have ebola. It had fleas. The fleas had, and spread, ebola.

People have a lot of cultural misconceptions about animals. You can't really help it.
Squirrels are just as filthy as wild rats yet everyone loves them. Rats aren't as cute as mice, either.

The fleas spread the bacterium Y. pestis, not the ebola virus.

Speaking of stereotyping animals... I heard they put fake animals on the roadside and people usually swerved if it looked like a mammal or bird, but would aim to run over reptiles.
>> Anonymous
This is what happened: Europeans thought cats were the accomplices of devils and witches. They killed thousands of cats throughout the land, in doing so they killed off their own vermin control. Rats infestested the cities because everyone threw their garbage IN THE STREETS. The fleas on the rats made everyone sick. And they deserved every bit of it because they killed off all the cats. I love karma.

That is disgusting. Got a link on that?

Besides the fact that rodent waste is highly irritating and often can cause asthma or allergic reactions, it also can carry some very unpleasant diseases such as Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome. Enjoy your rat AIDS.
>> Anonymous
>>192872

The rats DID have the plague in their blood, but they were also immune to it. The fleas ingested the blood, and passed it on when they also bit humans.

Therefore, the rats are carriers of the plaque.

Rats. Are. The SHIT.

I remember having them... unfortunately I probably won't have any more for a while.
First I had one. Then I gave it a male friend.
Then I bought them both lady friends.
Then one got knocked and had a litter of 10. I fucking loved those little bastards when they were about 2-3 weeks old. Then the other lady rat got knocked up and had a little of 4. But she wound up eating her babies, which made me feel bad because it might have been due to the fact that I forgot to feed them once...
But yeah, when you have 14 fucking rats, it gets a bit crazy. So we wound up giving them away.
But I still loved them. I loved giving them grapes because they went fucking crazy because they loved them so much.

itt faggots don't know the difference between the 1340s black rats and todays norway/brown rats
>> Anonymous
>>193110

There is very little difference. It still has the same immunities against certain diseases, which means for all you know, you basically have a ticking biological bomb on your hands ready to infect you any time.

Plus, no matter how well you care for your rat, you would never be sure of its running away and acting like the regular vermin. After all, that's why they stay in the cages when unsupervised.

Here's a picture of the newest breed of rat found in a rain forest. 5x the size of a normal rat. Would be rad to own one as a pet.

Little difference? My rats aren't black rats, which were the main rats that carried the fleas. The rats you see in petstores today are norway/brown rats. There is a huge difference between black and brown rats. Not to forget to mention BREEDING. You might as well say that dogs and wolves have little difference.

From what you have said, I can compare a rat to a cat.
If you let a cat outside, it may not always come back. Cats can also be considered pets. They could infect other animals, cause dramatic decreases in wildlife population, get into nasty things and spread diseases.
Yet people don't keep them locked up all the time.

Just stop posting in this thread.

Look you retard, do you HONESTLY think the colour of its damn coat would have any difference in whether it has immunity against certain diseases, such as the bubonic plague, and whether it is equally likely to give some nasty diseases to you?

No matter how much you like to gloat about how different your rat is to a sewer rat, in the end, they're all rats. They will willingly chew through wires and cement, and digest old newspaper and cockroaches just fine.

Which comes to the other point: they can do this because of intestinal bacteria, much in the same way humans also use intestinal bacteria to break down and digest food. Some of this intestinal bacteria, humans do not have immunity to.

They wll also scratch and bite and gnaw at you nicely too. Sure, if you're the rat's OWNER, I suppse your body will slowly develop immunities against the kinds of germs a rat carries (after all, all humans carry germs too), but it is definitely not the kind of pet you would even keep in a classroom.

And don't give me any more of your stupid dog/wolf bullshit - they carry the same sort of diseases, they are fine. Rat/cat is just a stupid comparison - so your cat goes feral while indoors?
>> Anonymous
>>193370
LOOK, you retard do you HONESTLY think that you are getting somewhere?
But I'll let this slide since you must be retarded and I'm tired of your stupid arguments.

The Black Rat species is Rattus rattus.
The Brown Rat species Rattus norvegicus.
It has NOTHING to do with the coat color.

TL;DR
Rats are awesome.
>> Anonymous
>>193388

And you're about to say that, what, these rats sparkle fairy dust out of their arses instead of fecal matter, therefore they are not equally capable of passing diseases to humans?

Do you honestly think having brown rats means they're medically sterile like some kind of Band-Aid?

NEWSFLASH: The Norway rat displacing black rats in Europe is a probable cause for the end of the plague.
THE ONLY DIFFERENCE YOU'RE GETTING FROM THEM IS AN END TO A CIVILIZATION CRUSHING EPADEMIC. KTHX
>> Anonymous
yes because norweigan rats don't carry fleas.
>> Anonymous
>>193487
No one said that.

It is true that the norway rat was involved, but no more than dogs, cats or any other animal that carried fleas. It was mainly the black rat.
>> Anonymous
hence my sarcasm is still justified, since 'norweigian replacing blacks' still wouldnt spell an end to le plague. If you really want something to blame though, check out the marmot. (Not even joking, marmots are directly responsible for the black death, damn their marmotty lymph glands)

ps groundhog day wouldnt have been a shit film if they'd used the real name and called it marmot day.

The best thing about pet rats is how they dribble urine everywhere they go. hooray!
>> Anonymous
people always say rats and pidgeons spread disease. Anyone who's gotten ill from either since 1400 is fucking lame.
>> Anonymous
>>193498
Males tend to do that, but neither of mine have ever done that to me.
>> Anonymous
yeah, the piss dribbling thing is a male trait, although I've played with male rats before and never noticed it.

So, just out of curiosity, what why is rathate anon so hellbent on hating rats? I've had rats go loose in my home before, and they've never turned feral at all, but I know that a mouse definitely would. And wouldn't most rodents be able to pass along the same diseases? Hamsters and gerbils shit, too. To say rats are a bad idea for a classroom is more than a little biased, unless I'm missing information
>> Anonymous
>>193516

All animals are bad for the classroom. Classroom animals are often mishandled, left alone over weekends and breaks, and kept in shitty conditions. No animal should have to go through that so some little brats can 'enjoy' them.
>> Anonymous
>>193539

As a teacher and former student I take great offense at your gross, self-righteous generalizations. We take excellent care of Flippy, he gets plenty of food, pot, and rape every day. How many gerbils do YOU know who have had sex with a 12-year-old?
