Why do humans have the innate desire to please animals?

Maybe that's not worded well, let me give an example.

Why do I feel such an obligation to pet a cat or a dog? Why does everyone? The cat gets a lot more out of it than I should. Even if it's not your pet, a pet you've only just encountered, why do people feel the innate attraction to doing this?

Is it sort of an empathy? I feel good for making the dog/cat feel good?

Anyone else ever wonder?

It's not necessarily limited to just making the animal feel good, it can be quite relaxing for people to just pet something. Maybe it's a maternal instinct?

It's a form of empathy. An offshoot of the same kind of understanding that allowed humans to domesticate animals ages ago.

We have an instinct to touch, cuddle and care for cute (=childish) creatures, mainly human babies, but small animals can do the trick too. Like eating, sleeping and sex, it feels good and rewarding to give in to this instinct.

On a more intellectual level, we also feel obligated to care well for the creatures who depend on us, because we know that they will suffer if we neglect them (physical and emotional).

because they are so cute and cuddly looking you just can't help it

I think its partly to do with what we project of ourselves onto the animals. For example I relate with my cat because it spends so much time watching tv with me :3

Because, right now in those very moments, my dog sits next to me and looks at the hands not petting her but typing on the computer, and then she comes to me and licks my face and DEMANDS to be PETTED RIGHT NOW.

I think it's because we're social animals, and a good bit of us are nurturing, especially animal lovers. So we extend our social habits and desire to nurture to animals. I think I've read somewhere that it's because a lot of the animals we find cute actually subconsciously remind us of human babies, and that's why were drawn to them.

Animals natural instincts is to be affectionate. Not always the case when directed at a human, because they are afraid. But if you take an animal and it's cubs, or it's clan/family they are going to be affectionate to one another. Humans are just creatures with that same desire to be affectionate to each other, and other creatures. It is our understanding, and lack of fear of these animals that makes us want to give the affection to them. Because we know unlike a human this animal will give no judgment for receiving the affection. Yet if you were to go up to another human and start being affectionate the person would judge them, and think it odd of the person to be doing this. You can go up to an animal though and give that unconditional affection without receiving any judgment. People just want to love, naturally. But the world we live in makes us feel like we're not allowed to.

Humans are classified as animals, how can your statement work?

This. Petting animals lowers your blood pressure too. I think it's just the want to be comforted/loved and an animal will let you feel that without any words needing to be exchanged.

you fucking retart ... becasue those animals are looking like human babys and childs...

and because you are a looser you didnt had children or has no live without them, you need a replacment that cant run away, so every animal with big eyes and small nose and high frown is suitable to fool yourself as if you wehre giving love to a child... its the chit-scheme and also you are fucking pervert... for seeing something humanlike in animals... I dont talk about having an animnal as a partner, like a hunting-dog, wich ones helped you to survive... I am talking about your abuse of animals as baby-replacement...

Which is odd, because I'm not drawn to newborns at all. 99% of them are hideous.
