I had this problem with my dog. The only thing that would calm him down was if I sat with him and every time a growl started to build in his throat, give him a light swat and say HEY or sometimes CUT THAT OUT. Thunderstorms usually happen at night so it was realllly annoying. I eventually got him to the point where I could still lay in bed (he would sleep on my bed with me) and if he started to get excited I could just nudge him with my leg and he got the idea. Unless it was big thunder right overhead. In that scenario, only picking him up and holding him like you'd burp a baby could keep him quiet because it was difficult for him to bark in that position.
