hey /an/, i have a question for you;

Yesterday I brought my new cat home from the shelter, and he hasn't eaten anything since. I'm giving him the food he had been eating at the shelter, and making it very accesible to him, and keeping the other cat away, but he won't eat, and won't come out from under the bed. Any tips on how to get him to eat, and is this "normal" behavior for a cat who's brought into a new environment? how long until i should get REALLY nervous?

Quite normal. He will eventually start venturing out on his own. When I got my new cat, I kept him in a large crate with blankets/litter box/food/water, and let him get used to his new surroundings before letting him out into the room. At first he hid in the closet, but he started coming out to see me in the evenings. Then when he was comfortable in the room, I let him wander the rest of the house, and he got used to that much faster. It just takes patience for some cats.

After a day, he should get hungry enough to risk going out and about. Just keep your other cat away and isolate your new one to one room.

Don't worry just yet. Cats can go for quite a while without eating. Desert animals and all.

OP here, thanks guys. i'm really hoping that by tomorrow he'll have eaten and drank something. it's just weird cause i put the food where he can get it and not come out of hiding, and he still doesn't touch it.

get better food... one that you can't find in a grocery store.

when I got my black cat, he hid under my dresser the first day. This is normal.
I coaxed him out by hand-feeding him small pieces of bacon I was having for breakfast.

Fuck that. Get the cat whatever. As long as it doesnt develop urinary tract problems then dont worry about it.

Don't get too nervous. It is normal.

Cats are far too ornery to let themselves starve to death.
