If you have concerns about hygiene, buy a new one.
If not, why not reuse the old one?
It's only poop your cat will drop in there.
You can desinfect it too before usage.

Some cats are really picky and won't use an old litter box, even if it's been cleaned and disinfected and everything, because the plastic absorbs some of the smell. So if the new cat doesn't seem to want to use the litter box you might try getting him a new one, but I think it's pretty rare to have that picky of a cat.

I agree with>>71617, unless you had a cat who had some seriously contaigous bowel infection or something of the sorts, there shouldn't be a problem with using the same litter box. It also depends on how long ago the box was used....if it was quite some time ago, I would assume that the box is pretty clean to begin with! You can get an ultraviolet light to check for urine/feces left in the box, but unless you have an expensive pan, there's really no need to go to that sort of lengths.

Sometimes you just can't get the smell of ammonia out of the litter box. I've had to purchase a new litter box because we never.. ever.. cleaned it out. There was cat shit all over the house. it was pretty much a typical /b/tard pad. Well, now that I've sufficently rambled on and made a fool out of myself...

disinfect it and you should be fine, just use some bleach and hot water etc
