I ran over a raccoon today. It ran right in front of my car and I didn't have time to dodge it.
The worst part is, he went under the center of the car. It didn't kill him. I could see him squirming around in the headlights of the car behind me.
I feel horrible. I hope the poor guy didn't suffer too long.

I accidentally hit a possum (*an opossum?) once. I saw him crawling from the side of the road, so I pulled to the left to try to make him go between the tires. Of course, he turned around at the last second and the right tire got him.

I think it's like this: If try NOT to hit him, you will. If you TRY to hit him, you'll miss.

Blah. I don't care for raccoons. They got into my attic, shit and pissed everywhere, ripped up my insulation. Fuck these bastards.

I know what you mean. Except for some small birds and toads, the only animal i ever ran over was a rabbit. It did exactly the same thing, i swerved off the road to the right, and so did the bunny. Right between the wheels, probably got it with my exhaust (or if youre from /o/: i sliced it with my oilpan cooling ribs)

I run over squirrels on a regular basis. My lancer is really quiet it seems, because their backs are usually turned.

Mind you, I did once get a seagull while I was driving a fairmont. The bird was on the right side of the road, resting, so I changed lanes. It saw me in plenty of time and started to take off, so I switched back to the right lane. Then it slipped and fell on some black ice. It got up again just in time to look at me and go :O before.
*Thud! Thump, thump*
First I was like :-( But then I loled :D
Fucking seagulls.

OP is a girl because because she can´t drive worth shit. Next time stay home and let somebody who knows what he is doing do the driving. That poor raccoon probably suffered hellish pains because of your non-existant driving skill. How does it feel to be a killer?

You will learn this pretty quickly after you get your driver's license.

Hey jackass; ever go around a corner at 55 in the middle of the night? Shit, I had my car on two wheels because there was a deer draped all the way across my lane - sometimes you just don't have the time and gotta rely on your reflexes, and sometimes things don't work out and shit gets squished.

Oh yeah, I'm going to relay the advice my Grandpa gave to my Mom and Aunts when they first learned to drive.

"If you hit an animal, NEVER look in the mirror."

i hit a bunny once, it was dark and i didn't see it until it was about 3 feet in front on my car's right tire. i screamed for like 20 minutes.

Yeah, it´s all about you sitting in the lone luxury of your automobile. All that matters is that you can drive when ever you like where ever you like.

So you drive over couple of animals who just happened to be in the way, but hey you´re innocent, you were just driving your car. And screw animals, who gives a fine fuck about some dead raccoon. Hundreds of thousands of people are killed in car accidents yearly, but hey that´s none of your problem, you just want to drive your very own private car. Who are anybody to judge you anyway? All those people are probably just some random hippies who doesn´t even have drivers licance.

Nevermind the rush hour that blocks the city and pollutes air you breathe every afternoon. You have the to right to drive your very own private car and you´re gonna use it. Nevermind all cancer related diseases (proven fact) that you air polluting habbit causes in other people. And screw public transportation, only poor people use it anyway and why would you have to depend on anybody than yourself and your precious car. You don´t care if it´s more environmentally fiendly to both socially and ecologically because you have the legally approved right to drive your own car.

Why should you give a fine fuck about anyone else when you can drive your car?

A pair of raccoons were crossing the street while I was walking home one night, and this car came over the bridge and totally nailed one. Went between the tires and smacked into a nice flat part of the underside of the car. Did like 5 somersaults. My friend and I totally thought it was a goner, but it got its ass up and scampered out of the street. This was no light tap, either. Made this loud, sickening thud/crunch noise. It seemed like no permanent damage was done though. Quite lucky.

dont blame the driver. its not his problem if raccoon is too stupid to mind the car. after all most animals do it on purpose by jumping out of nowhere in front of moving cars. the driver is the real victim here not the animal.
>> Anonymous
Never keep going after you hit an animal, how inhumane is that?! You wouldn't want to be left on the road half dead and in intense pain. Go back and finish the job. Thats the humane way.

If you know you can't dodge, go faster, if its inevitable - make sure its quick.

Actually, driving is a privilage, not a right. Get good and plastered, go to a roadstop, and tell the cops about your right to own and drive a vehicle. They could use a laugh.

It's not the fault of any motorist in gridlock that the place they commute in was not designed to handle the current volume of traffic, that's lack of foresight on the part of civic engineers. Some places have gridlock, some don't, some include livestock with vehicles in gridlock. Take it from someone who drives 60 miles (100 kilometeres) a day in total five days a week. I'd transit if I could, but it's not an option, which is no fault of mine.

My municipality decided to buy the propoganda that mass transit would increase the number of undesireable people in the community, so opted out. I'm in B.C., where every fifth house is already a grow-op.

Get off the soap box, if you want to help you can recycle the material.

Of course theres no reason to blame single induvidial for the stuff s/he is doing. I mean s/he didnt even build the road where s/he is driving. S/he has no chance to affect how the city was build for traffic. I doubt the most people cant really choose where the work or how theyre able to transport themselves.

I call that total bullshit.

Things are the way theyre now because people have been ignoring this stuff for long, (for example public transport would cover all areas if someone would actually use it.) Every induvidial is responsible for their actions towards their eviouronment. If you choose to accept the things how theyre and go along with them, youre as guilty as people whose ignorance made them that way.

If things are fucked up people need to take a stand and change them no matter how overbearing they might be. Because nothing is going to be changing by doing nothing and saying stuff like: yeah it suck but i cant help it. thats just the way the things are no way around it.

Wow buddy, wanna step off that soapbox? AND USE REAL APOSTROPHES, FAILURE.

Fact is, people need to get places. Cars are an essential part of life in many places, to get to work, school, etc. I don't give a shit about your stupid rant about pollution and shit, take that somewhere else. We're talking about accidentaly killing an animal with a car. Believe it or not, it was not intentional, people feel horrible (AS OBVIOUSLY DISPLAYED IN THIS THREAD) when they hit an animal, but it happens. There's nothing you can do about it, being remorseful or ranting about the cancer causing pollutants isn't going to bring them back to life.

Honestly, stay on fucking topic, if you want to combat air pollution go get off your fucking ass and picket or protest, or whatever, instead of being a worthless piece of shit and sitting behind your computer ranting on 4chan about morality.

AND USE PROPER APOSTROPHES, FUCKER!!!!

You're all fucking retarded.
Sometimes its not the drivers fault if they hit an animal.

When I was driving at night a few months ago a deer jumped out of no where a few feet in front of my car and stood there for a few seconds. When I swerved to the left, it jumped back in front of my car and I ended up hitting it.
It flew a few feet forward and laid in the road. When I pulled over to look, the fucking thing got up and ran away.
Fucking thing cost me alot in damages, too.
BTW, I'm in New Jersey so the deer have no where to go so I guess they're doing suicide jumps in front of cars.

If you want to bitch on how much cars are causing trouble, don't fucking drive and move out in the middle of no where.

>>50969Cars are an essential part of life in many places, to get to work, school, etc.
Thats right and we need to get people using public transportation. All problems that cars are causing are caused by private driving. Have you ever noticed that the lay-out most cities is base on private car driving? There would be no rush hour as we know it if people would be using public transportation.
People dont really need their private cars for nothing because they can do all same the traveling by public transports. The thing is that if you take the bus you might need to wait extra fifteen minutes.

And what goes for the roadkill animals is that, if you werent driving you car theyd still be alive and kicking. Theres no way around it. Have a nice day.

WOW! I NEVER KNEW BUSES NEVER HIT ANIMALS ON THE ROAD! HOW SAFE! EVERYONE USE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION AND SAVE THE ANIMALS!
>> Anonymous
>>50978

Bullshit. People do -need- private cars for a lot of things. You're three minutes late for the bus and you get into work 15 minutes late because you were waiting for the next? Guess what, you're fired. Oh, sorry Billy, can't pick you up from school, why don't you take that lovely bus. Don't mind the homeless guy, he only molests little girls. Oh, gotta run to the store now. But wait, no car. Better stand around and wait for the bus, missing out on a lot of time I could be doing something PRODUCTIVE with. Hey kids, wanna take a trip somewhere? Well, we could just drive up to the mountains for the weekend, but no buses go that far, so we'd better stay home or pay to fly what would be a 2 hour drive.

Listen, buddy. I don't like pollution, I wish more people drove hybrids. But you can't say ridiculous things like 'people don't need a private car'. I don't know what country you're from (if you're the same as the other poster who's measuring in km, not America I'm guessing) but here, unfortunately, we do need cars to get around.
>> Anonymous
>>50978
Yeah if you live in teh citay. There is no need for a car in the city unless you go way out of town a lot.

I on the other hand grew up on a small suburban town that had NO PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION around town. We had a commuter rail to go to the nearest city, but that was it.

If I couldn't drive a car, I would never have been able to go anywhere, not even to my friends' houses.

In America, cars are essential because most things are very far apart and I don't want to walk 20 miles in the deep snow, uphill both ways.
>> Anonymous
>>50980
I lol at your failed attempt to justify your selfishness with reason.
People don´t -need- private cars anymore than they -need- to go camping in the mountains.
And by the way, if you miss the buss for work you got no-one else to blaim but yourself.

>>50987
I live in the northern europe in fairly small city by american stardars. We have fairly good developed public transportation that covers the whole country, even the small villages pretty well. Of course in bigger cities transportation is easier and faster.
However I used to live in much smaller town located in the northern areas of my country, where car or some other vehicle were nessesarity at times (not exactly nessesarity since we had couple of horses in the farm and normal cars would be stuck in the snow for most of the winter. do people ever wonder how people used to get by when cars werent available, well anyway... ). My point being that, couple of people do really need cars to get by, but that doesnt mean that everybody needs them. Id say that 99% people who have bought a car could manage perfectly fine without it.

And again for the roadkill matter: This may seem harsh, but people are responsibly for animal deads theyre causing with their cars. If you dont like to take the risk of killing animals, then dont drive. The very majority of animals killed by car accidents are caused by private drivers. And since when did people start caring for animals other than zOMG theyr s0 cyOOt. It is the very same thing for every cow or pig that is killed for you to eat.

Travelling with other stinky humans suck. Wasting my time sucks. I use public transportation to get to work, because I can read while on the bus, and it isn't much slower than taking the car. So I am using my time better when I travel with the bus. But generally public transportation is a pain, because of other humans and because it never works as it should. If I had a shorter way to work, say 10-20 minutes with car or bus, I would take the car every time, dead animals or no.

>>50993>>do people ever wonder how people used to get by when cars werent available, well anyway...

They used the shift key.

Besides, the point cars are necessary, are citied and towns are built around them.

Instead of saying all cars are the devil, blah blah blah, try enforcing more people with gargantuan SUVs to trade in for a hybrid or start car-pooling. If we lived in a perfect world our moms would come down to the basement and feed us Veggie Hot Pockets while we bitch about Eco-Terrorism.

Fuck you Hippie. I'll save the earth-speeches for left over episodes of Captain Planet. In the mean-time go fuck yourself with a branch and quit pretending we live in a society where our cruel barbaric tactics aren't needed for our survival.

Don't tell me that you can't kill something with a bike.

Or a bus.

Or a train. (You can kill lots of people with trains, I hear it's a serious cause of burnout in brakemen.)

No matter what you do, there is a cost. Yes, there are sometimes economies of scale to be had in public transportation - not always. Yes, there are sometimes economies to be had through walking or biking - not always.

But minimizing ecological impact isn't the only thing either. There's also issues of freedom. If you don't have a compelling reason to argue something should be eliminated, then don't eliminate it - at least, by government fiat.
