My girlfriend has this kitten that loves to chew through wires. I have a room full of server equipment that she is obsessed with trying to get into. She sits by the door and claws at it while meowing pathetically all the while. How do I get her to ignore the room? Even if the door is open?

Op here i ment the cat, not the girlfriend.

Use negative reinforcement.

Provide the cat with a wire to chew through.

smear hot sauce/chilli on a cable,
let him chew it,
repeat.

alt: smear chilli on your door.

This. I personally recommend rubbing an onion on it though rather than hot sauce. Anything the cat loathes tasting, really.

You'll want to do that with a cable you don't care about though initially.

what about citrus?
cats hate that don't they? (non cat owner)

From memory citrus is also a good one, but cats can be really fucking odd creatures, it is something you potentially have to trial and error.

Just buy a few metres of that cable cover stuff - it just fits right over, and kitty won't be able to chew it as easily. Any computer shop will have it.

I know this is pretty mean but it worked for my dad,

you know those wall transformers?
power adapters?
little black boxes?

find one that puts out 4.5v at about 5-10ma
dc will tingle but ac will feel like someone grabbed his tongue and wiggled it.

and let the little guy chew on the wire a couple of times,
it wont kill the little guy it will just zing, (like when you stick yer tongue on a battery)
my dad did it and his cat never even looked at another wire,

(hey its better this kitty chews on 9v 20ma then 120/240v at 15A, this may sound like cruelty but would you rather end up smart pussy or a fried pussy?)

Onions can kill cats. Careful with that option.

In the same vein, maybe you could try something like a scat mat, in front of the door, the mat would zap him and keep him away from the door, or out of the room if the door is open.
