It took some time to sink in, but my dog used to sleep with a rat. We rented a farm at that time and since my dog was a kennel dog and there was nowhere else to house him, we made a nice place for him and his brother in the sheep shearing shed. The shed was modern, so they had plenty of warmth and room and we gave them 2 separate beds. One day I noticed a bunch of rat droppings in his bed so I removed them, thinking he made an extra meal for himself. After that, every day, since we moved out again, there were fresh droppings on his bed. Since he was always an emotionally cool and independent dog, I decided to remove the rat poison and let him keep his friend. It tugs at my heartstrings to think that such an independent and, in a way, lonely dog kept a rat as a friend.
