An, please help. My rat Han cut her tail on something. Near the tip, down to the bone. It's a front to back laceration and I've tried to apply pressure, which she hates, and the bleeding still continues. Right now I've got it sorta wraped in gaus and electrical tape as best I can, but I'm sure she'll rip it off. What should I do?

Tons of information here. Lots of different things to try.

Clean out the cage of everything if you can. Infection would be the worst thing to happen in this case, and that will lessen the chance of this happening.
Neosporin, if you have it, would also really help.
Try to make a tourniquet if you can. Not too tight, but tight enough so the bleeding slows.

OP here. Sort of stopped the bleeding. Got it to start clotting. Most horrible hour of my life basicaly. My rat was screaming so much and licking me trying to get me to stop making her hurt and it sucked knowing that the only thing she was associating with her pain was my actions.

Anyways, small piece of a bandaid and some electrical tape have turned into a bandage and hopefully tomorrow she'll be okay.

Any more suggestions?

Any of you faggots got any time for me? Seriously. Fuck. ;)

There's not really anything else you can do. Just keep it clean and it'll be fine. Keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't get infected - it it does, take it to the vet.

Make sure to change the dressing frequently (at least 1-2 times a day) and use neosporin or first aid cream to prevent infection. A bandage which isn't changed frequently enough can actually be more likely to cause infection than just leaving the area exposed because it provides a moist surface that can pick up bacteria and hold them directly against the healing wound. Worst case scenario if it looks like its getting worse or not getting better take her to the vet asap.

OP go to the pet store and get something called Quikstop. It will stop the bleeding.

OP here. She actually has no desire to remove the dressing, and I'll be checking it later tonight. I put a bunch of clean toilet paper in a hospital cage overnight and when I woke up there was no blood anywhere, so I assume the bleeding has stopped.

Thanks a lot guys, I was kind of freaking out for a while back there. It wasn't a TON of blood, but they're only so big and it was about as much as a massive nosebleed for me, so I imagine that's a pretty severe injury.

where on the tail is the wound? if its close to the tip that part may shrivel up and fall off.
neosporin helps and as long as there is no infection(even if the tip falls off), she'll be fine.

OP - keep the wound clean and take her to the vet if it does get infected or that.

But, don't worry too much. My old rat Boo got his tail smashed in a door once - very bloody. I disinfected it every day until it healed and kept his cage very clean; he had a nasty scar and a crook in his tail (presumably it broke the bone) from then on, but was other wise just fine. Didn't form any negative associations with me despite the pain, either. Rats are tough little critters, man.

OP here, thanks for all the suggestions guys. I had them separated using my no parking sign as a cage separator and cleaned the hell out of the cage. She's all bandaged up, third time I've changed the dressing. Also applied neosporin. Looks like it's well on its way to healing. I really appreciate the help. Glad my girlfriend suggested I come ask /an/

Not only can rats can tread water for days, they're also great jumpers. Nice try, though.

God, I can't believe you're serious. This shit happens and you go to 4chan and not to a fucking VET?!

Not many vets are open at 1am. When blood is squirting everywhere at midnight, you're desperate.

HERP DERP! Here is the reaction you were fishing for.

Glad she's looking better, hun.

More thanks to everyone who's given useful information! It's been a huge help.
