Hey /an/

I was looking to buy a dog for the family. Now I was wondering what dog is the most loyal/child friendly and obeys. My eye fell on the golden retreiver since they are used with handicaped people.

Any suggestions?

1. Labrador if you're dog newb
2. German shepherd/Rottweiler if you can afford a breeder
3. Poodle if you don't mind its faggy look, they're very smart and trainable
4. Shelter dog
5. Siberian Timberwolf

You should call some local shelters and tell them what you're looking for. There's a lot of homeless dogs that are "good with children".

Standard Poodle. (not toy, not miniature.)
Don't cut it like a fag and you're good.
Excellent breed, perfect for kids. Easy as hell to train, very gentle- they don't throw their weight around and are very dainty dogs. Golden Retrievers are just very clumsy, I wouldn't put one with a tiny kid. Also all the shedding. It all depends on the age of the children.
I grew up with a standard poodle- most gentle and loving companion of my life.
Most people get turned off by their 'show-cut' appearance I get. They just look like curly dogs without the gay cut. No shedding, and they smell pretty nice.

My family has had a yellow lab since I was 5, so she's 14 years old now and still so obedient and adorable and friendly to everyone, and I think she's wonderful. Really though, it's not the breed that made her nice... I think it's all in how you raise a dog. Be firm yet gentle, use positive reenforcement, attend some obedience classes, etc. etc. and you'll have a great family dog. I'd suggest looking to adopt a dog from a local shelter. If your shelter is anything like the one I used to volunteer at, the dogs there will be cheaper, more socialized, and a lot healthier than what you'd get going to a breeder or pet store.
