Seconded. Either that, or get the vet to come to you. My old dog had to be put down last year after battling cancer, and we saw him fading and called the vet. The vet was very kind, came out to our house and he was put to sleep calmly and painlessly as we held him and told him it was okay. As far as we could see, he wasn't scared before the act, and he drifted off gently. It also gave my family some "closure" (despite how I hate that word), so it may be the best thing.
