My spider died inexplicably, I'm not sure why. I guess it could have been the heat, it didn't really have much shelter besides its web, or its water could have dried up. I hadn't fed it for about a week either...but it seemed to have shrivelled up overnight, and there was white stuff over one side of the tank, which makes me think it could have been fungus or something
>> Anonymous
>>245371
It was probably mold. You have to clean up the food remains otherwise its a room for mold and mites. That kills a spider really fast.

Tarantulas make for some of the best display pets around. You have virtually no cleaning up after them, feeding is easy, they don't stink or make noise. All they require is a water dish and a cricket or two every other week.

Not many Tarantulas have significant venom, although it seems most old world species' venom is more potent than that of the new world variety. The Pokey's, like the one you are referencing, is an old world species and has a painful bite.. As far as I know the Heteroscodra maculata (pictured) seems to have the most toxic venom, though even it just causes severe pain and swelling. Also to note is that some people may have allergic reactions to a bite, akin to what happens to certain individuals when stung by a bee or wasp.

Aren't their hairs an irritant to human skin? Or is it only a few species?
>> E Noni Mos !/PraVV22sc

>>246821
New world species have urticating hairs on their abdomen which they can flick when feeling threatened, this is why they tend to have a less potent venom. There are around five or six different classes of hairs that target different groups of animals; The tarantulas evolved to target what most commonly would threaten them. Like with the venom, people can experience allergic reactions to the hairs, and in cases with contact to the eyes, possible blindness may result. As to why the hairs are effective at warding off predators, they are shaped like barbs or hooks.

Awww I love lizards because they eat spiders.

>>246727
Sorry no jerusalem/mole cricket can kill a full grown tarantula. Your other bugs would put up a good fight but die to the venom. The only real insect that is a threat from your bunch is the Pepsi wasp.
>> Anonymous
Not a Poecilotheria I mean. American tarantulas of the Southwest not so much.
Lizard guy check this out. http://youtube.com/watch?v=boZebIFn0P0

>>246852

Here comes a bit of reality:

It's no mole/jerusalem cricket, it's a Weta, and they have the strongest jaws of all crickets (look closely). One large bite into the (sensitive) abdomen and you can forget your spider.

The titan beetle would't have to fight the venom, because it's not possible for a tarantula to pierce it.
He'd just ran it over, or shred it to pieces, because these mandibles are able to cut things like a pencil.

And the Heteropteryx would at least puncture the spider a few times (-> serious injury -> death), because this thorned legs are so strong and fast at snapping, they are even quite painful to humans. Running over is also a possibility here, because it's a heavyweight.

Anyone keeping a Nephila?
I heard you can let them build their webs in a corner of your room without any cage....and they'll stay there.
Of course, if you have enough room.

I know what your Weta can do. The arboreal spider wouldnt fight it on ground or position itself for a deadly bite. In the other hand it is a still a cricket and minimal venom injection would kill it. The beetles would be hard ,but you are right. Trying to pierce them would get the spider dead, but it is much faster.
>> Anonymous
>>247261

Oh, oh.
Don't forget that wetas are arboreal insects, too, no real adavantage for a tree-living spider.
Crickets can be very fast if nessecary, but I admit that the Weta is the least dangerous among these 4 Insects. The green beetle is no real beetle, rather a big stick insect called the Jungle Nymph.

I've made a chart that consists of the danger level of each:

Titan Beetle -> Very dangerous for spider, has jaw, carapax and mass advantage
Pepsis Wasp -> Very dangerous with lethal venom and flying advantage
Jungle Nymph -> The one who hits first, wins, in serious cases, both might die
Weta -> See stick insect, but less tolerant to venom

Perhaps you agree to this one.
At least I could prove that they're exceptions of "food" :D
>> Anonymous
The arboreal wetas are smaller than the giant wetas, and also far more docile.
>> Anonymous
The Titan beetle does share its habitat with some of the largest south american Tarantulas. A full grown Theraphosa Blondi or Lasiodora Parahybana 10"-11" could overpower the beetle only if it got a ventral bite. I still think the Pepsis are the most dangerous out of that list. (I only know that some scorpions can eat the Pepsis if the Pepsis walk into the wrong den) They have evolved to hunt Tarantulas, and there are different species of them with the biggest one being the one that hunts the Theraphosa Blondi. The Jungle Nymph shares its range with some aboreal tarantulas (Cyriopagopus/Lamproceps) tarantulas that can reach 9 inches in length. I will have to do further research into the Jungle Nymph as a prey item, but I am sure the venom could kill it and it would be bad for both as the tarantula wouldnt position its abdomen close to the spikes in a strike. The kicks and struggle from the jungle nymph would let it escape definetely. The venom of these asian arboreal tarantulas is also far more potent than their terrestrial counterparts.
