QUESTION FOR ALL HORSE OWNERS ...

I'm going to buy a mare from my mother-in-law; not now mind you but in the near-future. The mare has stolen my heart because she has not only approached me 100% (the others just stand back .. unless I have food) but is also picked on by the rest of the 'herd' so another reason why to take her.

HORSE OWNERS; what bits of research would you recommend? Websites, Books, Videos.. Etc.

Pic related; filler. :}

You must be upper-middle-class, *at least,* to be able to afford a horse. Congratulations on your affulence, I guess.

I would suppose so.

The mare lives on greatgrand-mother-in-law's land, her and her husband bred the horses with a stud someone owned and, yes.. uh, I work at Taco Hell; live with fiancee's mother -- so there's a safe bet she wont be sold to anyone else. *shrug* Thanks.

Well it depends, what are you doing with the horse? (i.e., are you going to ride her or is she going to be a big pet?) Are you boarding her at a barn or do you have your own?

Before I go off on a horse tangent ,do you know ANYTHING about horses?

I've owned horses for over 18 years. Your best place to do research, people that own horses. I have a shitload of horse books, magazines, etc. They're collecting dust.
Your mother-in-law would be a good place to start. If you do buy her, put her on speed dial. Trust me, as the noob you appear to be, you'll be calling her often.
Try making 'horsie friends'. Ride the mare on group trailrides. If you're too afraid to ride the horse, don't fucking buy it. You'll just ruin the animal with your timidness. Then the next person that buys the horse will have a hellion to deal with.
Because she's being picked on (lowest man on the totem pole), she might have a huge personality change when suddenly she's alone or top dog. I've had them do that before. They can turn into total assholes. Dangerous assholes.
So I'd take her for a trial period before I exchanged cash.

Totally true. My mare was picked on a lot at her old barn, but when I changed to a new barn she was the queen and became a jackass. I managed to knock her down a few notches using that pat parelli type shit (it works if you know what you're doing, surprisingly enough), but it was still irritating and sometimes she could be dangerous.

Mares as a general rule of thumb can be unpredictable whores.

If you don't know anything about horses, read EVERY book you can get your hands on. The magazine Horse Illustrated also tends to have super helpful information. Talk to your mom in law extensively about the care and keeping of horses. If you get a horse and don't know dick about taking care of it, you could end up killing it. No joke.

Don't buy if you don't know anything.

Think about if she gets sick, can you afford the hundreds of dollars of vet bills? Spring vaccinations, worming? How about monthly board? How about shoes? Even if she goes barefoot she needs her hooves trimmed every couple of weeks. How about her bedding, her hay (it costs upwards of $4 a bale and more during the cold seasons), her grain? Horses can live into their late twenties if they're taken care of. Are you prepared to take care of her for that long?

What about equipment, lessons? Does she have a large enough space to live in that is safe? It is said you need at least two acres per horse for them to live comfortably.

Do you even know if she has any flaws on how she is built? Are her legs straight? Have you had a vet come to give her an inspection before you buy? Have you even ridden her yet?
