Kakpo Anonymous
"The kakapo is a bird out of time. If you look one in its large, round, greeny-brown face, it has a look of serenely innocent incomprehension that makes you want to hug it and tell it that everything will be all right, though you know that it probably will not be."
- Douglas Adams, author of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

So, /an/ I'm in love with kakapos. Anyone else share this love? Anyone have more pictures?

Actually he was just doing a radio show for the BBC with Mark Carwardine (a zoologist). So it was usually just the two of them and someone else from the BBC with a tape recorder.

Well, you have lots of mammals now. I guess that's why you're losing all the birds, too...

I remember visiting Motatapu Island (I usually reside in Auckland) with some mates and family some years ago. We decided to sleep outside one night. It was AWESOME, except some birds shat on our sleeping bags 'cause we were sleeping under trees. Heaps of rabbits and birds in the long grass, too.

I for one am grateful that certain NZ birds are extinct. Like the ones capable of eating humans.

"One behaviour that has not recently served the Kakapo well is their reaction to threats. When Kakapo feel threatened, they freeze, hoping to blend in with the vegetation that they resemble."
