Hey /an/, would a Tiger make a good pet? I don't mean a pet that you'd keep in a cage and never interact with but as a companion (sort of like Raja from Alladin). Of course, I'm not asking this because I plan on getting one but because I'm curious.

Yes, yes they make good pets.

OP here
Just curious, it would be pretty stupid to actually keep one as a pet.
Also I watched a documentary about a guy who kept a retarded Jaguar as a pet (it stayed in his house and behaved very much like a normal cat, showing affection and such) so it's not completely impossible to have a big cat as a pet. I was just wondering if it's possible to have a pet tiger that would give you hugs and kisses.

I think with all wild animals, it would definitely be better to get one that lives in a social group of some kind so they're more likely to understand that you aren't a threat. Same reason why people living alongside wolves could work, but that guy who hung around bears got torn apart and died.

Grizzly Meal was a retard.

The bears that killed him weren't the ones he normally lived with. He stayed too late in the season and some other bears moved in.
Not that it was a good idea anyways.

sure you can get hugs and kisses from your pet tiger but you really want to be aware of the risks. you have to train it so it learns that you are incredibly fragile, and even then it could flip the fuck out and break your neck by accident, like what happened to roy horn.
you know, like when your cat suddenly gets stuck in killer mode and start biting your toes for a day or two. except your cat weighs 800 pounds and can bench a train

Get an orangutan instead.

They'll just break your dick off.

SOON, it would be possible to genetically engineer tigers to have the "personalities" of cats, or even kittens if you prefer, and never grow larger than 10 pounds

The ape with the highest strength to weigth ratio. They look so harmless and docile but can tie your arms into a pretzel. The biggest danger with orangutans is that they do not show how they feel at the moment. They could be totallly pissed of and slowly walk towards you with a harmless look on the face.

If you raised if from a cub it could be a decent companion. The thing is, if a domestic cat is having a bad day it might bite, if a tiger is having a bad day you might be reattaching some body parts. Also, tigers only bond with the handler that raised them. If a spouse/child/neighbor/innocent bystander does anything unusual near them, they might ripped in half.

The tiger is basically a really big cat. So, if you domesticated a tiger, it would be like a really big domestic cat. I can't begin to count all the times my cats have scratched me or bitten me. It's not serious when a housecat does it, but if you scale that cat up to tiger proprotions, any of those times could translate to visit to the first aid clinic and several stitches. Even the tongue of the tiger is so harsh that if it affectionately licked you, it could shred away the upper layers of your skin. Not to mention the prodigious amout of meat you'd have to feed it every single day...

tl;dr: tigers are too big for pets. Get a Maine Coon.

Not entirely true; you have to socialize it with as many people as possible (on friendly terms; you don't want to feed it people you don't like if you don't want it to attack random people like my brother's cat does).

That is WAY too simple...I can't believe you even said something so basic as a tiger is basically a big cat. Get real!

A wild cat is a WILD CAT. It doesn't matter whether you raise it from birth or not, or how much you "domesticate" it. It is still a wild animal, period. If you owned one you would ALWAYS be at risk of its natural, WILD, instincts kicking in and it accidently attacking you.

Which would not result in some minor first aid and stitches, but a good stay in the emergency room and then a hospital room most likely.

Thank god you agree they aren't proper pets but god...don't make such a simple untrue statement.

Tigers are among the few animals out there that naturally see humans as preferred prey. You'd be hard-pressed to find a worse pet.

If you did have a pet tiger who would be your constant animal companion and never live in a cage or be separated from the world at large you'll have to keep laws in mind.
For example some laws require tigers to be neutered, to have their canines removed and I don't know if there are laws which require a tiger to be fully declawed but I think there are some.
Want something exotic and manageable? Breed a cat with a fishing cat or ocelot.
