sup /an/ I'm wondering if you have heard of the rumor that the Saint Andrews Cross spider can keep almost all bugs off of your plants and you wouldn't have to use poison. Anyone heard of this?

I haven't heard that about this particular spider. I haven't researched it, but it doesn't really make sense: many bugs that bother plants are tiny and hide under and between leaves constantly. Others never fly at all. Tiny & non-flying insects are unlikely to be caught by a web-spinning spider, at least not in any kind of serious quantity.

That being said, spiders ARE welcome in the garden, as they do eat many kinds of bugs, but most gardeners that I know of prefer hunting type spiders rather than webspinners. There are various insects that are also plant-friendly and eat the harmful bugs. You can buy some of these at garden stores: Ladybugs and praying mantises are some of the most commonly used for this purpose. They don't bother the plants but they eat other bugs that do.

What about Crab Spiders? The ones that just sit in flowers and don't spin webs? See I live in hawaii and one problem we have here is flies....lots of different kinds. But we have centipedes, all sorts of odd worms and over 9000 other types of bugs that rape plants. I was thinking, if I got a mix between a few Cross Spiders and some crab spiders, maybe that would be the most effective way to have a natural way to get rid of parasites. You cant have ladybugs and praying mantises with spiders....one or the other.

Methinks crab spiders would be better at eliminating plant pests than a webspinning spider.

Now what happens if you want to smoke the plants they live on? Smoke them too? =)

Just knock them off when you harvest. Problem solved.

not if you are trying to get fruits or vegetables from the plants. Remember, that to produce, plants need to be pollenated, and that the bugs are how the pollen get moved around. so netting to keep all insects out will get you no yield from your plants.

I would just be growing herbs....and I wouldn't want them to mate with the males so just female herb. I was thinking of breeding the spiders if they work well and possibly giving/selling them to friends for their gardens.

ive been noticing those spiders around the outside of my house a lot. they can grow to be rather large and can be startling if you stumble upon one unexpectedly. they are pretty harmless and lazy though. they just wait on their web.

If that's true... then you'd be left with a bunch of icky web all over the plants instead of nice smelling poison.
