Halp /an/. I've been keeping a goldfish, and I've had it for about a year. It's in a 10-gallon tank with a working filter, and I feed it goldfish flakes.

About a month ago, I was observing my fish, and noticed that its white scales have turned sort of yellowish. This has never happened to any of the fish I have owned, so I assumed it was just the coloration changing. (I once had a fish that started completely orange, but as it grew, it's belly turned a lovely silver.)

Yesterday, I bought another tiny goldfish, which was also orange and white, and I noticed how completely different the two look compared to eachother. My older fish looks almost filthy compared to the pure orange and white fish that I have just purchased.

Google wasn't much help, so is my old fish somehow dirty? Or is it normal for the white scales to gain a yellow hue? Though I changed the filter just last week, the tank itself might need a cleaning. I dunno, any ideas?

Fish in pic was googled. And sorry, no pictures, because my digital camera is missing a cord.

As goldfish get older, they slowly fade from gold to silver. If your fish manages to live longer, most or all of his scales will fade to a pewter color.

How often do you change the tank water?

You need to clean goldfish with your tongue.

Feed a varied diet to improve his color. Alternate daily between flakes, thawed frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, beef heart, peas & veggies...besides the veggies you can get the other stuff at a pet store.

And change 1/3 or 1/2 of the tank water *every week*, preferably with a gravel vacuum. If you can get him to start growing, move him up to a bigger tank. I'd buy a used 75 gallon for two goldfish....if you take good care of them they'll grow huge and live for years and years.

Listen to this man. Goldfish *LOVE* a varied diet and most people have absolutely no idea. Chalk this experience up to working at a pet store for a couple of years.

Offer your goldfish oranges. Fish need vitamin C, too. Just a slice will do, and remove it after an hour or whatever, especially in a such a small tank. Green peas, popped out of the shell, are really good for preventing gas and bloating. Just be ready to clean out the leftovers.

If you've got comet goldfish, your typical little feeder types, and you offer a large tank with plenty of growing room.. you could be looking at like.. two foot long fish.
