i just saved a pair of leopard geckos from my girlfriends sister who previously owned them and she didnt take care of them very well. long story short one of them is in perfect health and the other one seemed to have a shedding problem and it binded up its feet pretty bad and it was crawling all over the ground on its knees.

so my plan was to give it a lukewarm bath so it can get all the dead skin off, but will the poor thing be able to walk properly again after its feet are free, aside from probably lost toes.

its pretty upsetting but i though maybe some of you guys might know

I had the same problem with my gecko, you've got the right idea soaking them in lukewarm water to get the dead skin off, and yeah there is a good chance the gecko may loose it's toes. I consulted a vet and they told me to put some sort ointment on the geckos feet so she could heal faster. Another side note, what are you feeding your geckos and where?

right now its just meal worms until i can get the calcium supplements to 'gutload' them as well as crickets, but i haven't had a chance to get out to the store

No one can give you a definite answer. It depends on too many things. Warm water is your best bet, the sooner the better.

If you're really really gentle, you can help the shed process after the soaking by tugging VERY carefully at the skin. Be delicate, or you might tear the live skin..
I wouldn't soak him for longer than ten minutes a day though.

I've had a similar situation with my geckos. Some of them really have a hard time sheding if you dont' watch them.

Warm water defiantly helps. I'd give her a small soak once a day in luke warm water. You might want to try to peal some of the dead skin off after the soak... just be careful not to hurt her.

She probably wont make a full recovery. But you can prevent further damage and improve her life a bit.

Start misting the enclosure with a squirt bottle every now and then after this. Espessually when they're shedding. This help them peal off the skin a great deal.

Hope some of that helps..

I have also had this unpleasant task set onto me many times. Warm water is great for a soak for about 15 minutes. Get a really nice pair of tweezers and go to work on the toes. Now don't take it off any skin but break the skin so it wont cut off circulation, that will minimize the damage that is done to the toes. Do this right after it gets out of the soak.

If your Gecko is living in sand be sure to feed her in a separate location from there. For you see, if the gecko swallows sand while trying to eat, the sand can get into its lower intestines and create clogs, not a pretty thing.
