How long till they breed chocobos?

How good are Ostriches for riding? Presumingly worse than horses and camels. Could they be selectively bred to be stronger, more manageable and even more importantly not to try and peck your eyes out their sockets?

Is anyone doing this already? If not does anyone want to go halfs on a long term investment? ;)

why?

Hahahah

Usually only children are good at riding them, adults are just too big and heavy. A bigger version of them would have to be engineered to make them viable for everyday riding.

The best you can do for the pecking is to wear safety goggles or a helmet and put blinders on the bird.

HOLY SHIT. THEN YOU CAN HAVE WATER-WALKING OSTRICHES

But I thought that the pecking was part of the point.

Is OP picture real? I thought an ostrich would collapse under an adult's weight.

No, he is right. I think that it was the ... Moa of ... New Zealand. If I remember correctly it was something along the lines of 8ft tall or some such thing like that. Unlike in the movie (once again if I remember correctly) it was not carnivorous.

Ya, here it is. 4 fucking meters. I think that easily beats chocobos in size. Maybe not coolness but definitely size.

Nope, that's a dromornithid, an Australian giant herbivorous bird last of which became extinct after humans invaded the continent.

I'm pretty sure the giant birds in 10 000 BC were supposed to be phorusrhacids, South American hiant carnivorous birds (which were of course long extinct before man).

They actually had an ostrich race and festival down here yeeeeaaars ago, but only did it the one year because people said it was "cruel and inhumane". My mom still has the t-shirt from the event.
