Moth Anonymous
Found this GIANT MOTH hanging on the side of the trash can at a gas station. I live in Tennessee, but I'm not sure if he's native because I've never seen one this big down here besides a Luna moth!
The circles on his wings have a clear membrane, so you can see right through them. Would anyone know what species this might be?

I expect this thread will likely last a few days and consist primarily of people posting "well WTF is it" and others posting the correct answer for the _th time.

you may want to look into the species Cecropia... it looks similar... hope that helps...

I saw that exact same species of moth out on my porch a couple of weeks ago. I live in Oklahoma. The next morning its wings were on the floor of the porch with no evidence of its body anywhere. It was like some one plucked the wings off and discarded the body, wonder what happened to it.

Fellow Tennesseean here! I live in eastern tn, we never get any cool bugs. :[
I wish I could find some stag beetles, but they elude me. Its like a joke, everywhere you look I am surrounded by trees and dense woods, but NOPE no beetles anywhere. Just bees, which I am highly allergic to. Fuck you nature.

"The Polyphemus moth (Antheraea polyphemus) is a member of the Saturniidae family, or giant silk moths. It is a tan colored moth, with an average wingspan of 6 inches (15 cm). The most notable feature of the moth is its large, purplish eyespots on its two hindwings. The eye spots are where it gets its name – from the Greek myth of the Cyclops Polyphemus. The caterpillar of the Polyphemus moth can eat 86,000 times its weight at emergence in a little less than two months."

taken from Wikipedia hope ive helped:)
