Ferrets are indeed very cute and contrary to popular belief, you will find some with great personalities.

However, yeah, they smell. But more importantly, they're relatively prone to illness.

Some ferret-shelter lady who has like 748738757386 of them came to a class and spoke to us about them...and she suggested having a good $1000 per ferret set aside for vet bills. Before you even get one.

Not exactly true. They do have a particular odor, but so does any animal. I have to practically put my nose to my ferret to smell it's musk. If your ferret is de-scented and neutered/spayed, they smell *far* less. There's also food you can feed them, to make their poop smell less, and conditioning sprays you can use on their to mask the slight musk.

Many people come into the store where I work, and say that no matter how much they bathe their ferret, it still smells. There's a simple reason for this. Bathing him more often than once a month or so will remove oils from their skin and fur, which can make them smell MORE (and give them skin problems).

A ferret can go a very long time without being bathed, provided he doesn't get into anything disgusting. Some people wash their ferret only twice a year.

Remember, Ferrets *are* related to skunks, and unless you get them de-scented, they can actually spray you (though not as badly as a skunk).

Also, this is Bruce, my Fert. I previously posted this pic of him when I got him last week.

100% of ferrets you will get from a ferret store in the US are spayed/neutered and descented. Almost all the ones in the shelters are also spayed/neutered and descented. The only ones that will not be would be the breeder ferrets unless you say otherwise but i think tis really fucking stupid to pay 300$ for a fucking ferret.

They don't really 'stink' as long as you keep their litter box clean, because shit smells. Wash their bedding (dont keep them in shavings) weekly and wash their cage monthly. Its a good idea to scrub down their litter box weekly too. and they are SO FRIGGIN ADORABLES

This is one of my two ferrets.

Also, you have to ferret-proof your house. Any opening they can fit their head through, they can fit the rest of themselves through. Holes in walls behind your washer and drier, under appliances, through holes in your furniture, under the openings of your radiator...

Ferrets are awesome!

I have one, and he doesn't smell too bad, I bathe him occasionally and also have drops to put in his water that are supposed to descent his crap and him. It's very manageable.

They are really playful and like to wrestle with you. They will attack (playfully) anything, no matter how big it is, the result is infinite cuteness.

So far mine hasn't even had to go to the vet once yet. I got mine from a dude who was selling it in a classified ad.

Hopefully he has all his shots though? Distemper is 100% fatal in ferrets. And if you don't get rabies then if he bites someone and they report it...your ferret can be destroyed.

preventive care still counts

Or you could get a cat and... well, get a cat.

Yeah, because having something five times the size, half as affectionate, more expensive, moodier, that is capable of jumping five feet in the air, and has twice the life-span, is a far better plan.

I like cats, I do, but at least you can cage a ferret when you're asleep/out of the house, and bathe it with relative ease. Also, ferrets are smaller and less likely to seriously hurt you if they're so inclined.

Eh? I would rather be rubbed againts than nawed on.

>>more expensive,
What kinda cats have you been looking at, they are generaly FAR cheaper especially when it comes to vet bills, food and damage.

>>moodier
Once again, I would rather have it walk off than take a chunk of me with it.
