This is my cat. It's an old pic and she's about one year old now. She is very friendly and loving and we have her inside all the time, and she doesn't mind. The thing is, we are planning on maybe get another cat. A friends cat is pregnant, and are having kittens in about two weeks or so. I've heard that if I'm getting another cat in the house, I have to get a small kitten because of territory problems. Should it be a boy or a girl? Will we have issues with jealousy from our first cat? Is it even a good idea? She will get company when we're away, and have a friend since w'll have them both inside the apartement.
What are your thoughts? Have any of you experience with this? If our cat gets uncomfortable, we will not get a second cat.

An older cat died, the younger was lonely, so we got a new kitten. The little one was terrified of everything and needed a lot of attention (feeding, etc), but eventually the little one swiped the bigger one a few times and since then they've gotten along wonderfully. I guess be sure to supervise them both, be sure not to force them to be together too much if they don't want to, and keep a lot of treats around for rewarding good behavior and making the original cat feel loved even with the newbie around. Oh, and keeping the new cat in a cage where it can be safe might be a good idea until the cats get used to each other and the environment.

The sex of the kitten probably doesn't matter if you're going to get it fixed (which I hope you are). An old trick to get an older cat to accept a new kitten is to at first keep them separated and mix their scents. This can be done by letting the new kitten sleep on the older cat's favourite blanket and then giving the blanket back to the older cat, until they both have each others scent on them. This will make it seem to them they're family.

I had two cats, up until recently. Anyway, even though we got them at the same time we were told to get a male and female since territorial and dominance stuff would sort of work out naturally. They didn't get a long for a bit, but after a couple of weeks they were fine with each other.
Try it out, and give it a few weeks time. If they seem to be fighting a lot (hissing etc. not play fighting) they might not be compatible.
