ant farms are shit. they tip over easily and the glass gets scratches from the sand. there are many better alternatives for an ant nest
>> Anonymous

ANT RACK.

Op's picture is made for queenless carpenter ants. If you use any smaller species, you're about guaranteed to suddenly find 50 freshly hatched and escaped ants. Test tubes are the way to go for starting them.

Might be helpful to go here, also. We've been running it for months now. :P

Well there are different kinds of materials you can use to put ants in, one thing is certain though - do NOT use antworks, it's rubbish.

You can use a test tube for founding a colony, but when you have more than 20 workers you should start thinking about a better nest.

The best material for the most common species is 'y-tong', it's a soft material that can easily be kept moist, the only disadvantage is when you don't keep it moist the ants will start digging in hope of finding water.
Next you can use 'gypsum', also very good for ants but it's a messy job making one.
Some species like wood, but it has to be special wood because otherwise it'll rot easily.

The picture attached is a 'y-tong' nest.

I think if I ever get an antfarm it will be for one purpose only: Fill the farm with death traps and watch as the ants explore them.

I don't think I like the idea of that nest pictured. Couldn't the ants escape really easily?

Its got a plexi-glass/plastic cover keeping the ants in.

I have 20 some y-tong nests and not a single ant has escaped in over 2 years.

I had an ant farm once and the ants seperated into two groups after a while and fought til every last one was dead, so I felt like i wasted my money. anyone else ever have that happen?

That sounds like it would have been fun to watch.

I got the ant farm in OP's pic for my birthday when I was a kid. There was a purple one too.

That sounds fucking badass.

actually it was very interesting to watch, but It was actually a gift from my grandma, the only thing i ever did was pour a tiny bit of water in every so often so they would have to rebuild theyre tunnels, maybe that stressed them out , I dont know ?

maybe they separated into to 2 religious groups when they tried to find a solution to the periodical destruction on their homes

i guess they were each trying to appease the gods (you) by killing the infidels and taking the holy lands

or maybe they just sent you some crazy fucking ants

LuLZ !!!

It's important to take the farm and shake it violently until all the tunnels cave in. The ants love it.

Yes they love it, just like humans love it when an earthquake destroys their homes, it's fun!
