I got a coon problem, guys. This little group has tried to get into my apartment through the bathroom window for the last week. My apartment manager hasn't done anything, nor has animal control.

Suggestions?

Elaborate, please. Do I buy these somewhere or make them myself? Is there a particular smell they don't like? I can't imagine what it is, these guys are pretty damned ripe.

There's also four of them. The first night there was two. I assume that either they are littermates or they are forming a coon army to storm my john.

poison some bait. what the fuck do they eat? poison it good.

Remove anything from around your house that they might like to eat. Dispose of garbage, relocate freshly planted flowers (they enjoy digging up flower bulbs), pick vegetables from your garden, etc. I understand that you are in an apartment, but I mention gardens because you may have potted plants or another anon might have a similar problem.

Anything that smells like it might remotely be edible needs to be removed from the area around the window. Yes, garbage does not smell edible to us, but it does smell like FOOD, albeit rotting food.

Are they harassing anyone else's windows? Are you certain your neighbors are not feeding them?

I would imagine that they are probably after my honey and melon bodywash. Of course I'd rather drive them off than not be able to leave my soap in my shower.

I don't know if they have been laying siege to anybody else's windows. They will hang out on the fire escape outside of my apartment and stare into my living room windows if I shut the bathroom window.

They run up the stairs instead of down when they are startled. I think they have been getting some good eats out of the trash bin on the roof's sundeck.

I really don't want the little bastard's killed. If anybody's going to off them, it'll be the landlord or animal control, not me.

leave them food to eat
turn them into pets
cuz they is cute.

Live traps always worked good for us. Put some peanut butter or something on the inside of it. Then let it go somewhere far away in a wooded/park area.

yeah. thats exactly a good idea and how i got rid of my coon/groundhog problem.

being that it is summer, once they are trapped you'll want to move them as soon as possible. the heat could kill them, dehydrate, and cause more stress on them.

set a cross on fire in their lawn.

Careful if you follow the advice of trapping them then setting them go elsewhere. If you are caught by police or park security you will be fined. So just don't be stupid. It'd be really easy to avoid them.

I'd do it if I lived back in Kansas. I'm a half a block from the lake near the middle of Chicago with no car.

I'm probably going to have to have the landlord deal with it if I can't manage to run them off myself. Common sense tells me that they aren't going to be allowed long, happy lives if the landlord deals with the problem. Do you think something like the zoo or a shelter could trap them?

I guess it's not a problem for me cuz I live near lots of woods.

You live in Chicago.. I'm so jealous! I go there all the time since I live in Michigan. I did a quick google search for "Chicago animal control" and I found this. I hope it leads you in the right direction.

I'm assuming you can ask them how they deal with the wildlife once they've trapped them. Or ask for some helpful tips on keeping them away from your apartment.

At our old house there was a mother raccoon living either in our attic. She had a whole bunch of cute babies and used to steal cat food. The cats never seemed bothered by them, oddly enough.

Coon problem, eh? Well they are atracted by rap music, so stop with that, and country seems to deter them. either that or offer them jobs...

i see what you did there....

why don't you just leave them alone? by the sound of it, they aren't really doing anything destructive.

don't worry about it, just keep your windows and doors closed at night. raccoons sit on my porch and i feel them all the time. they're harmless.

i highly doubt raccoons are dangerous, but don't touch them. you never know if they're vaccinated or not. usually the city throws them vaccine biscuits.
