Sup /an/. I got my first pet today- a little black bear hamster. He's about 4-6 weeks old by the look of it, since he's freaking tiny. What are the special things I should know about him?

He tends to run up t he wall of his cage, across the room, and down the other wall, along with grabbing the bars and shaking them from time to time. Is this normal?

He also bit me when we first got him, and drew blood- but that was at the store where the person was bugging the shit out of him, so I wrote it off. Atm he's sitting on my shoulder eating some corm, so I guess it was just from stress.

I'd don't mind that they're nocturnal. I'm up all night and I sleep during the day, so it's not a problem. I figured he bit me because he was scared, too.

If OP has a wheel that squeaks, they can grease it up with a little bit of butter.

What if he licks the butters? :O

Better than licking WD40. Enough of it will get into the places where the metal touches to quiet the squeaking. A little bit of fat will not kill a hamster.

His wheel doesn't squeak at the moment since it's a smooth plastic wheel, but thanks for the tip.

First off, hamsters are not nocturnal. They sleep day and night and usualy are up dawn and dusk.

If you feed them the all seed diet, its a good idea to bring them crickets/beetles/worms for protien.

Mine still cage shake ever once in a while, but giving them grass or peices of soft tree wood to play with is awesome and gives them activity.

I feed him nutriphase. He seems to like it .

He likes rolling around in his hamsterball(yay), but otherwise he runs on the wheel/climbs all around his cage like a maniac.

My only concern is that he doesn't sleep in his little 'hut'- storebought, little wooden thing. He prefers to dig into a corner under the 'level' in his cage and sleep there.

Don't know too much about hamsters, but I hamster-sat one for an extended period for a friend and in winter it slept in its house and when it got hot out it made a separate nest outside of the house to sleep in and only when back in the house when I had the A/C on.
