Well you said you have a lot of time on your hand, so the first thing I thought of was a ferret, but then you said not too demanding, and ferrets are one of the most demanding animals on the planets. If I were you, I would go with a rat. They make great pets, aren't too demanding, and they easily make you smile and laugh.

I used to have 2 degus. Pet store guy told me to buy two because they were very social. One ended up killing the other and eating its face. Worst birthday ever.

They arent smelly at all actually. I had 4 at one point and cleaned out their cage weekly and never had a smell problem.

They have to be from the same litter really or there is a chance that they'll do that, like hamsters do.
