Dear /an/,

My dog is insane. She's chewn all the fur off of her back and won't fucking stop biting at it no matter how many flea baths we give her. She has three different hotspots and won't stop licking them. Before all this shit started she would always be energetic and playful, but she never EVER wants to play anymore. We figured it might be an allergy so we started giving her benadryl, but all that seemed to do was shift the attention from her old hot spots to a different one. HALP!

(pic related, its her)

She probably has injuries. Take her to a vet to find out a problem. If they cant find one. Cone the dog till it learns not to chew.

My friend had a puppy what would do the same but at its front paws. We called it the emo puppy.

take her to a vet dipshit and get a medication

OP here.

She's been to the vet several times. The only thing they said you can do is to give her this weird anti-psychotic medicine. She was on it for a couple of months and it never seemed to make that much of a difference.

Cone the dog. It will get her to stop chewing though it might be a bit of a problem for her to eat and get around if you have a small house/apartment. She should stop after a while.

When a budgie does that, i.e. plucks its own feathers, coning usually works. That has to be combined with removing whatever sources of stress the bird could be affected by, and usually changing the bird's environment (i.e. moving the cage to a different room) to break the habit.

I'd wager the same would go for dogs, too.

may be somewhat relevant:

saw this on national geographic once, it was about a documentary about when animals gets depressed
for example, a parrot that was separated by it's owner after all its life started to pluck it's feature over its neck and body
there was a few examples for dogs, but i dont remember it, the parrot one stuck in my head because it was really sad, but it does sound awful like your dog

it doesnt sound like your dog would be depressed, seems like you care for your dog

get a cone, and try to get as much physical contact with your dog as possible, may help if your dog is indeed depress for some reason

viral or fungal skin infection?

stick a cone on its head

Go to the vet and get revolution, will kill all flees within 24 hours and stop any eggs or future flea out busts if continued every month. Also kills round worms, ring worms, ticks and mites

yeah i heard when animals get bored or depressed they start to lick their fur until all the hair comes off. or birds will pluck their feathers..
i dont know maybe shes depressed for some reason?
>> Anonymous
yeah, the bird plucking thing often can happen because of being unhappy or stressed. WIth dogs though, maybe cream or something? D: sorry no idea

Hi. I'm too tired right now to make a long post, will post in 18-24 hours again. However, I am almost certain it is an allergy. They can come from human foods, overuse of cleaning/flea sprays around the home and leaving any shampoo in the fur after bathing. Go to the chemist and buy a large bottle of "Betadine". Dilute it 1:10 or 1:20 and rinse him very thoroughly with it daily, leave it in the fur. As I said, will post more later - keep reading this thread.

There's only one way to cheer up your dog. Not all women are willing to go for it, though.

Post a picture of where she bites on her back. Is there any kind of lump or irritation?

If you're entirely sure it's nothing physical and that your dog is biting because of mental stress, try to distract her as much as possible. Take her out for walks often, especially outside of urban areas whenever you can. What breed is your dog? Perhaps she's bored because of lack of work/hunting. Being inside the same house for long stretches can make frustrated.

Oh, I just saw the dog's female. Well, I'm sure some of the guys on /b/ are up for it.

This deffinatley sounds like an Allergy. My dog is allergic to house dust, grass, trees, pollen, certain dog foods etc.
There are a series of blood tests the vet can do to determine what it is exactly that your pooch is allergic to. There is also a really good cream that is perscription only that you vet might give her. Also she could be given anti hystermine tablets for when she gets itchy again. My dog was also given steroid for a short while.
My dog used to bite untl she bled =( And she went bald from where she licked. She used to be bandaged on her paws and legs.
ALSO! There is a really good cream called Otodex which is for dogs and cats and is for Eczema, sore spot, abrasions and minor burns, and is available at pet shops :D Hope that helped a little.
Oh you might also want to bathe her sore bits in a antiseptic like Dettol, TCP etc, that is diluted in water.

Oh and you can get a special dry dog food especially for dogs with allergies.

Hey, my golden retriever has the same problem!!!! HALP! I also give it benadryl (only if it's nose itches) and the vet said it was an allergy and if we wanted to cure it the cost per month would be over five hundred! HALP HALP!!!

I wholly agree with getting your dog on an anti-flea medication, regardless if it's Revolution, Frontline Plus, or Advantage. If you know your dog's having problems with fleas, then flea shampoos aren't going to do you much good as they only kill the fleas that are on her and won't kill any fleas that jump on her afterwards (even though the bottle says so....don't believe it). A good rule of thumb is to think that wherever the dog's been, there are fleas there. Contrary to popular belief, fleas do not live on the dog; the hop on when they want to eat and hop off into the environment when they're done feeding.

Also, if you're bathing her more than once every two weeks in flea shampoo, you're drying her skin out really badly and just escalating the problem. The e-collar (cone) sounds like a good idea, if just temporarily to let the wounds start to heal (they itch like crazy as they heal and her licking them will only, obviously, make them worse). You can apply Neosporin or any other antibiotic cream, just make sure she doesn't eat it.

Good luck with your itchy pooch.
>> ?????Also, Cocks?????
TAKE IT TO A FUCKING VET. JESUS CHRIST.

If you read the other posts they have taken her to the vet. I wouldnt take my animals back to the vet if they didnt know what this problem is. since they seem like fucking retards who dont know animals and dont deserve to be vets if they cant solve this simple problem.

Simple? There are literally hundreds of causes to the symptoms that OP is describing, all of which are completely different from each other. Some dogs even get mental problems and will lick and chew due to doggy OCD.

Not satisfied with your vet's answer? Go to another one, vets are humans too and will miss things and make mistakes.
