Heya

I really want a pet rabbit. Do they make good pets? Do they smell horribly? Do they make a lot of mess?

If you spend time with it, then it will be nice, but sometimes they can be fussy bitches. Don't smell if you keep their area clean and tidy. Not too much mess as in crap and piss, but mine used to love pulling at things and knocking things over.

I forgot to ask, do they get along well with chinchillas?

Oh yeh, mine also used to nibble at things 24/7, have about dozen ruined clothes with holes in. Have a special shirt when holding it/having it sit on your lap.

Cool, thanks for the advice!

It's advised when keeping pure white rabbits like in the OP picture to always ear some kind of neck protection, such as a thick leather or even metal collar.

Rabbits are awesome, really cuddly.
Buy a pair, so that they can entertain each other.

Good pets -> Yes
Smell Horribly -> No, so long as you clean up after them (like with all other pets)
Make a mess -> Well, they tend to chew on everything they can get their teeth on, I'd recommend you make en enclosure of some sort.

2 things rabbits LOVE doing:
- Chewing on hard stuff (wood, plastic, cotton, etc)
- Digging

Set up a decently sized cage outside, with wire meshing below ground, and it'll all be fine.

dont get a boy otherwise he will hump everything in sight, including you.

Rabbit piss is actually quite strong and smelly.

From my own experience, you should probably get one instead of two if you're interested in it liking you more. Two can entertain each other though, if you don't have much time for it, on the downside, they won't like you very much.

Of course, the cardinal rule should be "Don't get a male and female together unless they're spayed." That's why my mom went from owning two to twenty in the course of a year.

Personally, I miss having rabbits, but I would need to have one I could house train if I ever got one again.

Well indoor or outdoor?

They are not smelly for the most part, and very neat and fastidious. If trained they are not a mess, but that depends entirely on you (or whoever you get it from). They do explore a lot, and can cause a lot of damage if you don't secure your stuff or leave a lot of exposed wires around. Make sure you give them chewtoys, you may have to try a few different ones but it saves you a lot of damage.

I recommend that you do not get two. A male and a female will be interested in only one thing. But 2 males will fight, which was the experience we had when I was a child. Some of the fights were rather severe.

If indoor, put an enclosure (preferably on tile or hardwood, as they will eat carpet if hungry/bored) and rabbit-proof most of the area where you let it run around (it has to be let out of the enclosure sometime. If outdoor, make sure the wire mesh extend underground.
