Dear /an/
I googled but found nothing, Can i own a small shark(s) as a pet?
>> Anonymous
Don't. Let them live free and recover their populations.

Yeah because i was going to travel halfway around the world and capture a shark, transport it home and keep it captive... Or i could buy one born in captivity... Whats it with all the peta fags?

Sure you can.
All you need is
1) profound knowledge of keeping saltwater fish
(this your first fish tank? start with a guppy instead)
2) a huge aquarium
3) a superb filter array
4) big ammounts of money cause a shark will want to eat lots.

Already kept lots of species of saltwater fish/coral (Guppys are freshwater they would die in saltwater lol)

i have made aquariums before although never one big enough to house a small shark. But is it legal?

Never heard of it being illegal.
I saw stingrays and morays being sold at my aquarium shop, why not a shark?
People keep tigers.
Also: shark is not shark.
There's a difference if you keep a big white one or a catshark.

actually, guppies and several other "freshwater" livebearers can. You just have to slowly acclimate them. They are a great alternative to feeder goldfish for marine aquariums since they can stay alive for however long it takes for them to get eaten.

As for owning sharks, I can't say for sure if it's legal or not, though I'd assume you'd have to get through a lot of red tape to aquire one.

There is a chain of fish stores called "Big Al's" that all have a huge shark tank in them. The one near my place has a price tag on the actual tank they hold them in. It's $18,000. So yeah, look em up and if there's one near you, go and ask 'em about it.

Now this is all assuming you want a cool shark. Owning those dinky little marine sharks you see for sale every once in a while is legal of course.

lots of stores get them in unfortunately, so not really any red tape. the only problem is that the most common sharks in the hobby will end up needing tanks at least 5,000 gallons or more to comfortably house them. the smaller species will still need at least 250 and very strong circulation and filtration. but will be harder and more expensive to get (lanternsharks, etc)

sharks are just better left to the big public aquariums

they were selling small nurse sharks at a pet store near my old house in livermore, ca i dont see why it would illegal for you to own one
>> Anonymous
it varies state to state on which species are legal to own. in california you can own smaller cat sharks like the pic and even black tipped reef sharks. they sell them at my LFS, you should check online for your states policies.
