Dear /an/

I've never trimmed my cats claws, I'm terrible I know. Is it bad not to ever? [she's an indoor cat]
How do I make sure not to trim them too short?

Get a pair of claw clippers-they look like short scissors with scoops on the cutting sides of the blades. Push gently on your cat's toes to force the claws out, and cut the claws. There's a pink/white part of the claw that will bleed if you cut it, so stay below that. Just snipping the points off is good. You will need to do this every couple of days. Your furniture will thank you.

Thanks for the help. I kinda don't mind her taring up this furniture, but when we move that might be a different story.

Clipping isn't so much for the good of your furniture as it is for your cat. If your cat is indoors you need to clip their nails at least every month or so. If their claws grow long enough they can loop around and dig into their pads, causing a nasty infection and a lot of pain.
