Hey /an/,

I just adopted a dog today. I already had two cats before and the adoption group said they didn't know if he was good with cats or not. When we got home with him he seemed afraid of one of them, then the other one came out and the sort of blocked his path and started barking at one of them and scared one of them and a chase started?

Is this normal, and can it be stopped?

tl;dr : New dog is chasing cats, what do I do?

Let him eat the cats and enjoy your new pet.
You don't sound like someone that could train a dog to do anything.

Tell him in a stern voice "No" when he chases/makes an attempt to chase. Also praise him or give him a treat when he can ignore them as they pass by.

We adopted a similar dog who was "probably" good with cats. He chased them for a few weeks, but with consistant training the habbit should be easy to break. My parents actually suck at dog training, the problem could have been fixed sooner, but they "felt bad" about correcting him as often has they had to. Just stick with it. Once he learns what is acceptable behavior, he'll be happy to do it.

They aren't mine.

I've never had to deal with this problem, most dogs I've had in the past have never had a problem with cats.

Our dog eventually got used to the cats. Just don't let them share a food bowl or there's gonna be war. Kinda hard since our cats tend to have a greedy streak and go over to the dog's and eat out of it once they finish their meal.
