Training a 3 year old German Shepherd. Anonymous
Hello /an/,

I have a German Shepherd that's 3 years old (in human years) and she is not too obedient and I know it's my fault. She seems to be responsive to when I throw objects (she'll pay attention to me when I raise up my hand and wave it around with any object knowing that I am about to throw it) but she won't respond to when I say her name (I think she doesn't know that I'm calling her when I say her name but rather she might think it's a noise I repeatedly make as she'll rarely look up at me when I say her name).

Well, I think I've "programmed" her incorrectly. I know nothing really when it comes to training dogs. How do I go about training this dog?

What are some great resources? How do I know when she's learning?

Slap her when she does something wrong.

Hmm try getting small treats, get her attention with them, then say her name. If she approaches you when her name is said give her the treat. Eventually stop with the treats and just love on her when she does. After all this she should eventually associate with people calling her name to good things happening, and should come straight over to you.
