A friend of the family is getting a couple of terrapins, yellow bellies i think. Does /an/ have any friendly tips? He says he's looked everything up but i just wanted to be sure to collect all the information i could, the guy is kinda careless when it comes to animals and i know firsthand how demanding terrapins can be, especially if they are temperamental.

Thanks.

Put close to the house entrance. It's good Feng Shui. They bring money and good luck!

They sometimes carry salmonella.

Tell him to wash his hands often.

Yeah, he was warned to carry them with gloves if he had to move them to seperate tanks or handle them in any way.

Thanks anon's, any more tips?

- The tank should be mostly water-filled (duh) with a decent heating lamp. In fact, all you really need is a plastic island floating in some water. Just make sure that they can get on top of it when they need to.

- Also, make sure the tank has a decent filter that is cleaned often. Cleaning it is the most disgusting thing in the world, and your friend may not feel up to it, but make sure that he does every now and then. Turtlewater gets filthy, and it's not good for their health or yours to leave it like that.

- They can live off of bottled pellets, which are nice and cheap. They are part of what makes the water so dirty though.

That's about all I can remember off of the top of my head. Hope some of this helps.

Isn't a shitty diet one of the big causes of health problems in pet turtles, along with inadequate lighting?

Varied diet, good lighting, and clean water are going to be the biggies.
