Hey /an/, my cat had kittens a month and a half ago. As we speak the four of them are ravaging my bedroom. A minute ago though, I found on my bed what appears to be one of their claws.

I haven't heard any squealing, and none of them seem to have blood on their paws, but I've raised kittens before and have never seen anything like this. Is this normal? Should I be worried about the kitten?

You could be mistaken about what you think is the claw. Post a pic of this "claw" and we'll know for sure.

As you may already know, cats' claws are actually part of their top toe joint, so there is no way a claw could "fall out" without massive damage.

Could be a tooth though.

I'm having trouble getting a clear picture of it. By claw I mean the nail.

This thing is the exact same shape, thickness, and texture of one of it's nails.

Don't panic. It's just the outer shell of the claw. They shed regularily, so the claws stay pointy.

Their nails grow in layers and come off like that as they wear out, thats how they keep their nails sharp. Its perfectly normal, you have nothing to worry about.

Oh. That. That's just the outer sheath of the nail falling off, and not the entire nail. It's why cats like to "sharpen their claws" - their nails are designed to fall off like that after it gets a certain length.

Don't worry OP, just buy a new scratching post.

Thanks. I'm surprised I've never seen this before then.

There's usually one or two stuck on a scratching post if yours is made of sisal rope.

Huh, my cat always used to lose his nails like that too. I always figured it was because he was old, though since he was an outdoor cat I'd bet it was because he was wearing through them so fast. Thanks Anon. I thought my cat had some kind of crazy nail leprosy.

It's probably a tooth, take a closer look at it

Make sure you put sun lotion on their ears when they go out.
