Brown Recluse Turtle

it's a tortoise, you can tell by the legs and clawed feet, made for digging instead of swimming. Give it fruit and dark greens. don't keep it in water.

I should add, dog food is good as a base diet, just make sure they get their veggies.

if you do keep it which i highly advise against since there are two laws preventing keeping it as a pet (native species protection act and endangered animal protection act depending upon where you live) they do need requirements though if you do keep it. Ultraviolet light that mimicks the sun and around 70+degree heat. food usually includes insects such as crickets, mealworms, worms and roaches (some have been known to eat mice and fish but i wouldn't advise it), as well as kale and collards, carrots apples, grapes, even honeydew, cantalope and watermellon and they love banana's. It would also be wise to add calcium powder to some of the food and maybe some other ground up mineral and vitamin supplaments. Still if your lucky they can live to be 50 years old. also you can check it's sex unlike other turtles by checking the eyes and the plastron, Males have red/orange/yellow/light brown eyes and a concave underbelly females have dark brown eyes and a flat underbelly.

this guys' correct. Many many states prevent keeping this animal. However, I believe a state or two might not have any laws as of yet. Where is op from?

its a eastern box turtle..and yes they hiss lol

The best advice I can give you from my experience with a legal Desert Box Turtle is to make sure they have constant access to fresh water. They dehydrate very quickly. They aren't tortoises, so the care is upped a bit.

You'll be spending a lot of time caring for these guys compared to most other reptiles. But I find it to be worth it. Their personalities are fucking insanely amusing.

>experience with a legal Desert Box Turtle is to make sure they have constant access to fresh water. They dehydrate very quickly

Most animals require access to fresh water. Terrapene box turtles aren't native to deserts; they're semiaquatic and actually need access to water deep enough to partially submerge and soak themselves in.

Yes, it is an eastern box turtle. We got one living in our back yard, even though it is hardly ever seen.
You should not keep it in the house because turtles are very attached to their birthplace. Means it probably was born close to were you live right now and was living there ever since. Taking it out of it's environment will not only cause mental suffering for this animal, but will also contribute to the slow extinction of this species.
The problem with those turtles is that it is often hard for them to find a mate, and with taking that turtle you will deny her the chance of ever reproducing.
You can tell their gender by the color of their eyes, yellow-ish brown is female, orange-red is male. The male's stomach is kind of indented too.

Oh, I guess box turtles not existing in deserts is why you find Terrapene ornata luteola, the Desert Box Turtle, in the Sonoran Desert in arid environments.

Typo. I meant 'Terrapene carolina box turtles'.

Either way, if the best advice you can give someone is 'make sure your semi-aquatic reptile has access to fresh water', there's no point in saying anything at all.
>> Anonymous
>>314415

Some people don't realize it's a semi-aquatic animal. You'd be surprised at the misconceptions surrounding box turtles just because they're land dwellers.

Besides that, most reptiles don't need their water changed every fucking day like most shitty caresheets tend to tell you. These fucks do because they piss and shit in their water like no other.

Stop being a faggot. I was emphasizing the importance of water for your semi-aquatic turtles.

Then instead of "well, from experience with my DESERT turtle I can tell you they need fresh water every day because they get dehydrated" you could have said something useful. I mean, would you give the same advice to someone keeping a frog?

And the reason caresheets tell you to change the water every day is because of particulate matter like dust settling in the water, substrate, and potential urine and fecal matter getting on the feet or tail and being introduced to the water. Would you leave a glass of water you've already had a drink from sitting out for 24 hours and then drink it the next day? Probably not, because unless you're completely fucking retarded you realize how quickly bacteria multiplies in stagnant room temperature water.

They ingest worse. Day old water isn't going to kill anyone.

What do you fucking want me to say? Don't put your fingers in front of their mouth because they eat everything in sight, and they don't let go when they bite? Don't put them on your bed because they tend to void their bladders? Don't drop them? Change their UV bulb once a year? Give them vitamin supplements?

That's all too obvious. FRESH WATER IS NOT.

>>314569
How about 'provide water deep enough for the turtle to submerge itself in but with a shallow incline so it can get out, and make sure it can be changed easily or you have a large capacity filter because they'll defecate in the water'? Something USEFUL? Providing fresh water IS obvious unless you're 3 years-old or you have fucking down's syndrome.

Obvious? I don't think so.

Fuck that noise. It's excessive. They'll go by fine without a private pool.

>They ingest worse. Day old water isn't going to kill anyone.

Because standing water has absolutely no ability to cause secondary infections in reptiles with undetected illnesses, so there's no need to practice standard husbandry procedures.

>>314573
instead of dissing on the guy who actually tried to help give advice. why don't you shut up or contribute something useful yourself?
>> Anonymous
>>314598
Because the internet is full of sites dedicated to the captive husbandry of animals, much of it written by qualified veterinarians and biologists. If someone is so fucking lazy they can''t be bothered to stop bouncing between /an/ and /gif/ to do some research that they'd ask the retards of 4chan of all places for care advice they have no business taking care of even a houseplant.

That, and the OP only asked for identification.
