I wanna get a fresh water fish for my friend as a birthday gift. Any suggestions? My friend's aquarium is 10 gallons if it matters.

What has he got in his tank already?

Are there fish in the tank already? If there are, I'd just get like.. a gift card or something. Either way, I'd ask your friend first.. kind of tricky regardless, compatibility issues and giving pets as gifts are both like UHHHHH.. you know?

Agreed. It is usually best if they buy their own fish, as they may have certain stores they trust, etc.

Fish can spread disease to each other like nothing else.

This christmass I saw a guy in a petstore who wanted to buy his friend a corall as a present for marine tank. He didnt knew shit all - what is the size of the tank, how old is it, who is livivng there. Nothing, fucking blank and wanted to buy some sort of colorful corall.
Well, good thing it was a store with knowledgeble staff. They told the guy to first gather all the information and come to buy only after that, otherwise he might accidentaly wipe out his friend's tank.
Yeah Op, dont buy fish, buy something else. If you feeling generous and your friend has room buy him a bigger aquarium with stand, canopy and all setup (up to 90g should be fine in almost any apartment or house). Or buy a good book about feesh keeping. But dont buy a living creature as a present, this rarely ends well.

never ever buy pets as presents.
always ends bad.
unless of course you and the gift receiver are in on it and they take an active part in choosing and purchasing the animal.
even then. no don't do it.

pets only work as presents depending on the animal and if you know for sure that's what your friend wants.

For instance my friend bought me a Russian tortoise a long time ago. But he only did it because I already had a number of turtles and he knew I was thinking about getting another one and he also knew I knew how to take care of it. I got a friend a hamster once (that turned out to be a shrieking bitch) because he'd expressed to me before that he wanted a small animal pet.

But things like fish are risky as other anons said. Why not buy him a gift certificate to his fish store of choice so he can pick out his own fish?

Fish as a birthday gift? You are a bad friend.
