Ferrets won't bite hard if you train them not to. Do some reading on the subject. Lots of good websites. I have two, and although the young one does bite when she's playing with me, it doesn't even come close to hurting, because she was trained as a baby not to bite hard!
Also, they do get a musky, oily smell, even though they'll have had their scent glands removed. Just change their cage litter often, and DON'T bathe them if you can help it. Bathing them will make their skin make MORE oils, and they'll smell even worse afterward.
