I want to get a pet rat, /an/! What do you think? Any words of the wise?

Rats are awesome because they don't require a butt ton of knowledge or resources to own. Read a website/book and just know that they require time with you because they are social creatures.

In which case you should have a butt ton of rats. If they are social, they are going to want friends. Then they can all hold each other's tails.

i have personally owned three rats. missy elliot (pictured),DMX, and raymo.
rats are fucking sweet.
me and my roommate successfully trained missy elliot to do a number of tricks, (like coming to us when we called her, fetch, tightrope walking, we even trained her to jump to us 4 1/2 feet from an office chair to our couch).
rats are awesome for a number of reasons.
if you just play with once in awhile, they will remain sociable.
their smart. relativly.
affectionate.
will and can eat almost anything. we used to feed them praying mantis. they loved it.
they are entertaining.
i had all three at the same time, and people did call me rat king for a little while... lol

...is it expressing fear?

Nah, just a random google pic and not mine, but looks like she was just cleaning her tail when someone took the picture (and I'm only assuming female because of the lack of giant rat nuts). Rats are kind of neat freaks, they're always grooming themselves.

No, TWO or more is fine.

Even if you play with your rat everyday, you are not a fellow rat. You do not communicate like a rat, you do not keep a hierarchy like a rat, and you are not up at the late hours rats are.

Rats need a buddy.

Yeah, I probably should have said this. I had a solo rat that did great, but she was never in the cage and had excellent litter habits (never pissed on the desk, etc), she would explore the house and come back to me. Rather "irresponsible" to most people, but she did fine. I now have two rats, but they absolutely ignore eachother, its like they are different species - one only stares wistfully outside of the cage and wants to be with people all the time, the other does nothing but lays in the hammock and eats. The latter was socialized but he's just naturally antisocial, both human and rat-wise.

But generally, yeah, you want to start with two.

Don't insult rodents by naming them after rappers >:[

Get a big ferret cage for them. They looove to climb and explore. I used to have three rats and when one got old and his back legs gave out and the other 2 would bring food over to him :)

On a related note, its near impossible (for me at least) to find a breeder. In nyc the best i got was some inactive numbers in the upstate area.I love rats, and have had three pairs over the years but im confined to buying feeders that never live past one year due to tumors and such.

Unless you're willing to deal with your pet not living its projected lifespan due to inbreeding, it'll be a real challenge to find rats bred for health and specifically to be kept as pets.

YES. I'm in Florida, and there's like no breeders around either. I found at least half a dozen e-mails and numbers, but alas, not a single reply. I'm really frusterated. I'm about to go buy a pair from a pet store, which I really wanted to avoid :\
>> catface
Yes, get a pet rat. Dumbos are the most friendly, and very sweet by nature. They live about 5 yrs. if you take good care of them, and are more friendly than all other rodents combined.

Two rats is perfect.

PLEASE avoid the pet store, not because of some silly PETA crap, but because they have inbred rats that will get sick and die on you in horrible ways. I've had several pet rats from the pet store develop cancer or just up and die for no reason.

Rats are sweet, smart, and affectionate.

Don't let them have rat babies. EVER. It'll be a force you can't control. D:

Rats all the way. If you have the space and money you're better off with ferrets imho. But seriously I'd take a rat over a chin any day of the week.

Dumbo's *are* great, affectionate, intelligent..
and *do* get a ferret cage or something at least 3x2x3.. they have so much fun making nests (no treated woodchips please! I always used shredded newspaper.. easy to clean, cheap etc.. but not so sure about the inks these days!). I also used to suspend old sweater arms like tubes in there for em as well!
awh, maybe I should get a rat.. /an/, what do you think? ; D

Dumbos aren't any more or less affectionate than any other rats... though they do look like bastard victims of trisomy 21.
