Hi there. I remember people being able to buy a seat for their cat as long as it is kept in a cage. I suspect this has changed because of security reasons - please talk to the company. I know though that if you have a registered assistance animal, it would be illegal to flat-out refuse the animal to travel beside you.
You don't have an assistance kitty, do you? :)
Seriously though - Animals are far more prone to dying when sedated on long trips. I would'nt trust pet transport companies either. Get a very strong (metal) cage, secured kitty litter box, soft bed, and secured food and water container - but check if it is all ok to transport. Have a good chat with the airline company. They get these questions 500 times a day. Good luck.

Forgot to mention, litter should probably be crystals or paper and the bed should be cotton or wool since the cargo area is not air-conditioned and will get quite warm.

OP here, he's a pretty skittish cat, and I don't want to traumatize him, are there ways I can help him relax for the trip without sedation?

Lawl- I was going to post this in its own thread, but this seems too good to pass up.

A retired American couple have hired a cab for a 4000-kilometre ride to their new home to protect their cats from the cold of a plane's cargo hold, and from each other.

New York couple Betty and Bob Matas opted to take a yellow cab to their new home in Arizona, fearing their two cats would freeze to death in a cargo hold if they took a plane.

Cabbie Douglas Guldeniz agreed to turn off the meter and charge a flat rate of $US3000 ($3600), plus expenses for the journey. If the couple follow New York protocol on gratuities, Guldeniz could be in for a $US450-$US600 tip.
