WHAT HAS SCIENCE DONE??
>> Anonymous
Science has created cures for disease and has enlightened the curious mind, but has also created fear and terror both directly and indirectly.
>> Anonymous
God damn I love science.

Just curious, what are some diseases science has cured?
>> Anonymous
Smallpox and polio are big ones.

In countries with a working medical system (i.e. not the USA or third world,) you can add TB, rabies, syphilis and the plague to that list.
>> Anonymous
Wait, the US is the only first world country with syphilis?
>> Anonymous
I think we need to seperate out vaccines from cures. There is no cure for smallpox or rabies.

At any rate, disease is necessary. The human population is drastically higher than it ever should be. Science while it has found ways to prevent a lot of disease has actually eliminated natural selection. Humans are now many times over the population they should be and we cannot be evolving since virtually every member of the species is contributing to the gene pool.

Science has contradicted itself. The end result of its prevention of suffering through disease will be suffering on a greater scale when the population is no longer sustainable.

That must be an AIDS map.

The terms first second and third world countries are obsolete now.

It is a relic term from the cold war.

First world was NATO countries, Second world was communist bloc countries, Third world was poor countries that weren't really either. There were also countries such as Switzerland that weren't any of them.

It's the human development index map. The current system of ranking the state of nations.

While not an AIDS map it is not a coincidence that for the most part it would be interchangeable with on.

The aim of science is not to end or alleviate suffering. Those are things that we can choose to do with it, if we so wish. Science is simply an attempt to explain the universe around us using obervation, reason and logic.

Trolls, fuck off back to /b/.
>> Anonymous
>>77661
The aim of science is progress which prominently includes reducing human suffering. Without this compass, science is aimless, useless and often dangerous.

Space travel would be nice, but do you think if we built shit on the moon it would affect the tides?
>> Anonymous
I'm sorry, but I don't agree. The aim of science is simply to measure, explain and understand. What we do with that knowledge and understanding is a whole other matter. Remember that, science, as well as being the basis for medicine, has also brought us chemical weapons. There are many such examples. The *application* of science can be for any purpose, good or bad.

>>77669
No. Assuming the raw materials for the buildings were found on the moon, it's mass, and therefore it's gravity, would be unaffected.

well it is, you are thinking of technology, but thats a different bag of cats
>> Anonymous
>>77691
No, I'm thinking of science. Technology is an application of science. Many scientsts are working in fields which have no application whatsoever, currently. They work to increase our knowledge and understanding. It may be a generation, or many, until applications for what they discover come about, and it will be up to people then to decide what they want to do with the knowledge
>> Anonymous
>>77694
yet you admit the aim of science is making more knowledge, not necessarily helping mankind.

plain scientific knowledge can and is used for "evil doing" everyday, but that doesn't make it less scientific, it's not the work of science to do good or bad things, that's the job of man... progress? the job of man...not killing himself whit shiny new knowkedge? well, you get the idea
>> Anonymous
>>77707
Yep, you've got it.
Science - making more knowledge.
Man - decide whether to do good or bad with scientific knowledge.
