Hey OP,
I had a lab for about 14 years. His entire life he was an extremely energetic, yet loyal and obedient dog. He was a yellow lab and shed horribly, but the world was his playground. He became a guard dog when my brother was born. If you approached the baby too fast, he'd get into a defensive stance and stare at you, and if you continued, he'd get between you and the baby. He died of a heart attack.
My neighbor had a black lab for just as long, and he grew to be huge, yet friendly. He died of old age. He was replaced by a chocolate lab (who was a bitchy bitch to men) who recently died. She was pretty calm unless a man approached, then she'd go crazy. She died of cancer.
My stepbrother has a yellow lab who was very energetic the first 7 years of his life, and he's calmed down now, but that may be because there's a baby in the house now that he's protecting.
