Dear /an/.

I recently lost my job and was thinking about applying at a PETCO.

Does /an/ know if it is a good idea or not? I worked at a humane society before this.

Please help.

OP here:
What I mean is, do they manage things good. Do they treat their employees good. Good money made.

ETC.
>> MiMi
I'd ask that if you do, and are accepted, that you will strive to make the company, and at the very least your particular store, shine above the shitstain that most PetCo stores I've come across appear to be.
>> Anonymous
Than an addition to the question as well as what I asked.

What does /an/ usually think of PETCO stores?

It is also this place or a vet's office...possibly.
>> MiMi
What I've heard from both customers and employees alike is that customer service is nonexistent, animal care is minimal at best and terrible and negligent otherwise, managers don't give two shits about anything other than themselves ... and more recently, in a different thread, that the employees don't know shit about anything.

But I suspect like PetSmart, which I work at, it truly goes on a store-by-store basis. I've never worked at a PetCo, not that I would, but if I were to do so, I'd do the best I could.

And please, for the love of whatever's holy, if you see animal abuse or neglect, find a higher-up to tell about it. If they don't listen, find the next-higher higher-up. And so on, until the problem is addressed and solved. Please.

Wow, sounds kind of scary.

I visited the PETCO here where I'm located and the animals didn't seem too bad off, though there wern't very many people there at all.

Maybe I should work there and try to make the store better somehow. I was going to apply at the vet's office in town here, but figured that I should maybe get some schooling in first before I did...better opportunities I guess.

I'm just trying to look for a job that will treat me better than my old job did. I was like their bitch and also the only one who really cared about the animals.

Halp me /an/.
Please?

Well, my experience with them is professional - I work there on Saturdays and Sundays with a vaccination clinic.

I really don't care for a lot of the managers - it's as if they think we're just there to cause some new headache for them all weekend long. There are a couple nice ones, sure, but the same can be said for any business.

The employees... Well, that's definitely a store-to-store thing. A lot of the times, the help is really temporary, and they don't stay long enough to learn the ropes properly.

I'm not overly impressed with it as a pet store, but since I am indirectly working for them, I can say that you'd probably do better to work elsewhere.

What are your qualifications, if you decide to go to apply for the job at the vet's office?

Well, I have volunteered at an animal shelter/clinic for three years abd a wildlife shelter. I also worked at the humane society for 6 months, so I know a lot about cats/dogs.

I don't have any college schooling yet though...but I do have college level zoology that I passed my senior year.

Sound good?

My my, things seem dead.

Then, it depends on what the position you are applying for.

It is unlikely that they would hire you for a technician position, since the vast majority of places prefer to hire people with schooling/training/etc, but mostly those with degrees.

A vet assistant position is a possibility - I believe they often hire without the schooling, and your experience might be enough to qualify you for it.

Since you worked at an animal sanctuary, does that mean you have skills with birds/exotics/etc, or just cats/dogs?
>> Anonymous
Well, kindof.

I have knowledge on what few animals I worked with, which I doubt will ever show up at a vet's office. I only ever worked with a kid's program, so I got to work with the small fry stuff.

I guess it is more than most people know about exotics though? *shrugs*

Petco sucks balls. Apply for Petsmart instead, which has a lesser chance of sucking balls.

We only have PETCO.

:(

Pet stores in general suck. If you must work at one, go there and interact with the staff before you apply.

I like petsmart because the people are nice and generally knowledgeable, at least at the ones locally. I have no idea why they thought dropping 3/4 of their cat stuff and putting in a horse/tack aisle was a good idea in the middle of the city, but hey, now I can buy a bridle.

There is one Petco here and it is.. alright. It is the only place to get male rodents, though you have to quarantine them and treat them for lice (there are even worse pet stores like Noah's and PetLand, but of the two "good" ones, Petco is the only one with males). And they sell ferrets, which is terrible.

CEO.
Is this a good idea?

Petland is awful. They treat their employees like shit...unless you work in the kennels you'd better sell $1,000 of shit a day or you'll never make above minimum wage no matter how long you've worked there.
Pet shops that work on commission tend to suck anyways.

What would a gay recluse need with a bridle?

Hmm?

This needs details and such.

Hmmmm, I think I've been deterred away from the idea of applying at PETCO, which is fine.

I'm going to try at the vet first and if that doesn't work out for me, then on to PETCO it is. =P

I worked for Petco for nearly three years, at two different locations, under three different managers. The company itself is fine to work for...it's the managers you have to watch. Our stores got walked at least once a week by our district manager to ensure our animal care was up to par, but they were always given warnings ahead of time, so we could make things look extra good.

Petco is usually good about taking sick animals to the vet, though there was a day when I was not allowed to take a hamster having seizures to the vet because it would have been an after-hours appointment, and thus too costly. Otherwise, if something is found to be sick/injured, it goes straight to the back room and is checked on at least twice a day.

What can you expect if you get a job there? You will be a sales associate, nothing more. That's the generic term for all associates. They will train you on register first, then give you your animal training (which is only as good as the trainers), and finally you will be shown how to work stock and front and face. You will probably start at a few dollars above minimum wage, and your hours will vary greatly from week to week.

I think that's about it. I wouldn't tell anyone NOT to work for Petco, but be very careful when you observe the management there, because they can and will make things a living hell for you and the animals.

Well, thank you very much, you've made me feel better about working there. Hopefully things will work out for me...I got fired at my last job for working too slow, or so they say.

Do you think I could get fired for that?

I'm not a recluse, I just hate people. I didn't say I was going to buy one, just that I *could*. Besides, maybe I have a horse. Or some sort of pony.

>>242217
Petland is an abomination. I would rather hug a ferret while getting a blowjob from a dolphin than encourage someone to work for/buy from/ say anything nice about Petland.

Sickly underweight 6 week old bernese mountain dog puppIES for 2000$? The "breeder just dropped them off" when the papers with them state the "breeder" is in Michigan? 58+ (I stopped counting) rats, mixed genders, in a 10 gallon aquarium, while there are hamsters in open cages biting kids (its cool, they keep bandages right next to the pen)?
I can't wait for AC around here to get off their asses and finally close the fucking place.

I applied...but then someone on 7chan scared me into regret.

What should I do, I mean, it's not like I can take BACK my application.

The vet's office didn't have any applications today, I have to wait a few days, what should I do! :(

>>242292"I would rather hug a ferret while getting a blowjob from a dolphin than...."
You realize that some people won't understand that's a bad thing.

Why not register at a smaller, independent pet or fodder store?
I've met some decent, caring people at those places.

Some people may like ferrets and like to hug them but surely they don't hug them while getting blo.. oh. Furries. I forgot.

Well okay, there is no way someone would like dolphi....
