Hey /an/, i'm buying a Hedgehog within the next couple of weeks. Do you guys recommend any specific bedding/food/toys? also any tips in raising the little bugger would be much appreciated.

Definately get a wheel...And if you get a metal wheel, make sure you line the edges of the spokes with either electricians tape or duct tape...It makes it not squeak. I use california natural dry cat food, and my Earl seems to like it, and it's really good stuff...But it's expensive.

man, I've always wanted a hedgehog as a pet.
Are they possible to get in Australia?
Since they don't live in the wild here.
Guess I'll go see if there are breeders.
I just answered my own question, lovely.

You aren't meant to get metals wheels at all, little critters could get their legs trapped between the spokes.

I've had a few.
The quills don't hurt, no. They are soft.
They are nocturnal and rather antisocial and are the type of pet that tolerates being handled rather than enjoying it.

Like with all small mammals, you should get pine shavings, not cedar. If you have any large pet stores you shouldn't have to give it cat/dog food; I've found two different types of food my little Nala likes. Cat toys with bells inside really entertain them, they can roll them around for hours on end. If it's fairly small, you can give it paper towel rolls... its kinda hard to explain what they do with them. Just, check this out.

Make sure you don't get a cage or wheel where the floor is made of wire as it is likely to get its leg trapped as it snuffles around and break it, they are not too bright and have quite fragile leg bones.

A hedgehog covers a lot of area in the wild so you need as much floorspace as you can give it. A large multi-level cage can work but as hedgehogs do not really understand heights you will need to fence off drops and the side of slopes to get up to higher levels. the slopes have to be of quite a shallow gradient too and not ladders for the reasons I mentioned above.

Don't use cotton/ wool/ rag bedding. Torn up newspaper and sawdust will be perfectly adequate.

Keep the hedgehogs room heated in the winter, it is not a good thing for a pet hedgehog to go into hibernation as it is difficult to replicate a hedgehogs normal diet as it is, unless you are an expert you'll never get the pre hibernation diets right and it'll be fine and happy without hibernating if it is a pet hedgehog. Most pet hedgehogs that hibernate will die.

And whatever you do don't feed it bread and milk.

they are quite fussy so don't take one on unless you know what you're doing and look up care sheets online too.
