My little brother found this small turtle. neither of us know turtles, and we wanted to know if you guys could tell us what species it is.

I cant tell from the angles youve shown but if it has a darkish possibly red patch behind its eye it could be a red earred slider otherwise it could be a box turtle both are semi aquatic
the water needs to be deep enough so they can right themselves if they flip over otherwise they drown (basically as deep as he is wide)
and somewhere dry and warm (spotlamp) for him to climb onto
as for feeding they need a varied diet best check a website on terrapins

i'm sorry but you have no idea what you are talking about. a box turtle? not only does that not look anything like a box turtle but a box turtle is not semi-aquatic either.

Couple people said painter turtle that is close but not right.

Closest guess has been red eared slider. This turtle is in the same genus as that.

This one is a yellow bellied slider (Trachemys scripta scripta) which is one of the lesser known slider turtles.
