It depends on the breed.
I bet you 95% of everyone's purebred dogs are from backyard breeders. Protip: if you didn't get put on a waiting list, you probably bought from a backyard breeder.
BYB purebreds are inbred, they don't want to buy a different line into theirs. That's a waste of money to them.
Notice many designer dogs also have millions of health problems? Because even though they are mutts, they are also inbred by BYB, or bred from two BYB dogs that were inbred.
Why are mutts generally healthier? Because all the millions of mutts that get put down before they even get a chance to be adopted, are never shown to you. All the sick, old, and unhealthy get put down as soon as they arrive at the shelter. All the bad temperament dogs that require excessive training get put down. So what you see at shelters are the best 5% of all mutts.
So no, mutts are not generally healthier. Purebreds ARE healthier, but they are so rare that most people don't have true purebreds, just BYB purebreds. And no, just because your dog is AKC or whatever doesn't make it a good purebred, almost every BYB has a AKC dog. That's all that's required to get the puppies AKC certified, so you still are buying AKC certified inbred purebreds.
