I was swimming in Vermont this week and I saw a strange little fellow in the water. His body was not stiff like an insect, but he had thin little legs up front and big round eyes like one. In the back he had a long tail that split at the end like a mermaid.
Anyone have an idea what he could be? He was quite friendly and eager to explore our belly buttons.
I drew him in the hopes it might help.

If it had two filiments/cerci then its a stonefly larvae

If it had three then its a damselfly larvae

It still must have been one of those, there are only a few options when it comes to aquatic insect larvae...there are hundreds of species, so I'm sure one looks like what you saw, that was just the first google image that popped up () : )
