Tell him in a stern voice "No" when he chases/makes an attempt to chase. Also praise him or give him a treat when he can ignore them as they pass by.
We adopted a similar dog who was "probably" good with cats. He chased them for a few weeks, but with consistant training the habbit should be easy to break. My parents actually suck at dog training, the problem could have been fixed sooner, but they "felt bad" about correcting him as often has they had to. Just stick with it. Once he learns what is acceptable behavior, he'll be happy to do it.
