Hi /an/ Im in the DC area.

Love animals and volunteer at the smithsonian insect zoo in my free time. Anyways, I wish more non-toddlers came the zoo. Kids are ok but I really dont feel like anyone over 5 is interested in meeting any of my bugs... too scared?

I just want to have an intelligent conversation about my heteropteryx dilatata :'(

FUCK YEAH.

FUCKEN LOVE HETEROPTERYX DILATATA.

Waaay out of my league and the only thing I've dared raise are Chinese mantises.

But still.

Thanks for not being a pussy about big bugs. I like 'em too. And I do notice that little kids don't seem to be as fascinated with them as you would expect. Which is sad because I know the feeling of wanting nothing more than to show off your creatures to anyone that will look like an idiot.

holy shit beautiful creature is beautiful.

Man, when i was a kid, i fuckin' loved bugs and those people that would show them off to you outside their enclosures. I'd pet spiders and hold cockroaches. Kids these days, i sware....

You should educate us more on your beautimus bugs :D

Zookeeperfag here - it's not just bugs. Kids these days have no interest in anything at the zoo. Kids suck, animals rule.

When I was a little kid, I used fucking love insects. Kept beetles, cicadas anything bug I could catch as pets. I once caught 3 praying mantises and put one dragonflies in a cage to see who could catch it first. But somewhere along the line I developed a phobia to the compound eyes of insects and now I'm creeped out by them. My dream of being an entomologist faded away quickly... ;_;

sup OP, another bug person here, what do you want to talk about your phasmid? There aren't too many in my area, and they are pretty boring

I once caught a big green praying mantis and stuck it inside my cap then when i put my hand in to grab it it attacked me and my finger started to bleed not alot but a little bit.

I'd talk to you about Heteropteryx dilatata all day.

I live in Arizona, so people have a slightly greater interest in the venomous animals here. Even though it's out of fear-induced interest, people of all ages are into seeing someone handle a tarantula or scorpion, and sometimes they'll even go for it. It ranges from 5 year olds to 80 year olds.

I volunteer at a nature festival thing here, and my table's usually the most popular with the older audience.

Of course, the most knowledgeable people you get there are the ones who can tell you the common names of a couple species, but I guess it's better than nothing. The only annoying thing is when they ask me if the Hadrurus arizonensis or Smeringurus mesaensis I'm holding is a Centruroides sculpturatus. And the constant, "did you remove it's fangs????? durr huurp."
