Minnows Anonymous
Meet the minnow. Possibly the poorest excuse for a fish in the entire planet. Staring at it too intensely will cause its heart to explode. Shaking will make its organs fall out. Why breathing on it will turn it to dust.

That being said, how can I keep these little shits alive? My new turtle absolutely loves to gore them for fun and food, but they die more of "natural causes" than turtle snapping.

I keep them in a bucket with an air pump, and I put chlorine remover in the water before dumping them in. Anything i'm missing?

food?

They must die of starvation in hours then. I've tried throwing in beta pellets, but they didnt seem to care all that much. They do seem to like eating bits and pieces of eachother after the turtle mauls them though. Should I throw some minnow gore into the bucket for them to nom nom on?

Find a local bait shot (a place that sells fishing stuff) they normally sell these things, just ask them how they do it.

They have dead minnows floating with the minnows they sell. Frankly they dont seem to be any more knowledgeble on how to keep the bastards alive for a week than I am.

try freeze dried bloodworms, that seemed to do the trick for me.

How often do you change out the water? Without a filter you're going to need to do that a lot.

Is this a pic of your container? If so that's the problem right there. I work for an aquarium service so I don't have any minnow specific advice but general fish advice might suffice. These fish are highly crowded. Aside from the direct stress this causes, each and every one of them is pissing ammonia into the water. Bacteria will convert some of that to nitrite and nitrate but all of these are toxic. To keep the quantity shown here I would recommend getting at least a thirty gallon tank. Set this up with at least two filters that have replaceable carbon filter packs. This should help extend the life of the minnows somewhat. This advice doesn't account for problems from disease or parasites.

One inch of fish per gallon of water is a general rule, doesn't really apply to extremely well filtered water but these guys are so suspectible to pretty much everything, well, get a filter.

That whole general rule thing is shit, sure for small fish it works, but would you put a ten inch oscar in a 10gal tank? I think not

I dunno, it's not so bad!

That's why it's a general rule, not a concrete rule. Also, that really only applies to community fish, not overly aggressive ones like Oscars or Snooks.

You need a filter. And they'll eat goldfish flakes a little easier than pellets because of the size.

You need learn more about fish care.

Go to aquarium sites like www.aquahobby.com...

I think i'd rather just let them die and replace them with new minnows, than bother picking up a 30 gallon tank with two filters. Thats a bit excessive for fish that come near 50 for $3

I would worry a bit about the temperature as well. That could kill them off pretty quickly.

Anyway, my suggestion is get a neat aquarium to put the little fuckers in, and you'll have a pretty good-looking decoration in your house instead of a bucket full of half-dead, smelly fish. Having an aquarium is a lot of fun.

My aquarium is taken up by my turtle, albeit in a month i'll be upgrading that to a huge turtle tank so it can better roam around. At which point the minnows can live there instead.

Now about temperature. Warm or cold?

Great! There you have yourself an aquarium.
Found this on google. Is this the kind of minnow you have? In that case, perhaps you don't have to worry about temperature.

Anyway, good luck!
