After lots of research, I think I want a sarplaninac. But information on them isn't easy to find. I've gathered they're very independent, intelligent, protective, in need of socialization and grooming, and exercise. I presently own a border collie mix who came to me very undersocialized, so most of these are things I've dealt with before, except...

What's it like living with a humongous dog? I'm only 5'6" and 120 pounds myself, so it's possible a sarplaninac could be bigger than ME. I know they mature to be calm, but what about the dreaded 'teenage' puppy stage, when they're basically their adult size but still act like they're 3 months old? How would one handle a dog bigger than they are?

Also, I doubt anon has more info on the breed, but just in case, any other insights would be appreciated. I've decided I want the dog because I'm a paranoid freak who feels the need to have protection, I love independent dogs, I love training intelligent breeds, I have massive respect for protection breeds (once I'm done with my animal behavior major I intend on training working dogs), and they're good with animals they're raised with- I also have a cat, and my current dog is only medium sized, so that's important.

I don't know a lot about this breed, but you're not the first person to deal have a dog bigger than you. You just have to be careful how you trian him; this is important so he respects you when he is 20 pounds heavier than you are. Just be persistent, and confident. And, make sure you can get him to go for a walk without him draggin you.

This is now a thread about Fishing Cat.

SOCIALIZATION is key, otherwise the dog will become so territorial that you won't be able to take it anywhere/ let anyone near it.

(good luck finding a breeder who will sell to someone with ZERO knowledge of the ancient LGDs!)
