Hi /an/

I just bought a goldfish at a local pet shop. But my little buddy has a problem: he is inactive and stays at the bottom.
He sure has eaten enough.
Is he sick or just stressed? Or is the water too bad?

Thanks for helping

Need more info. What kind of tank is he in? Temperature? Water parameters? Is it cycled? How did you acclimate him?

He's not in a tank atm (going to buy one tomorrow) - He's in some sort of bowl (Pic related)

Temperature in the room is 20°C

I have no idea what the water parameters are.

I just cycled it.

I first put my fish in the bag, in the water at +- the same temperature for about 5 minutes, than started to change a bit of water, and after that I just put it in the bowl

It's probably the shock of the change in water chemistry. Leave him alone a while. Oh, the water is dechlorinated, right?

No it isn't, this probally is the problem? What do I have to do? Boil the water first?

Definitely don't boil it now, even if you give it time to cool it'll be too hot. Goldfish are coldwater fish. Go back to the petstore and buy some water conditioner/dechlorinator. In the future, if you want to avoid buying that, you can let the water for the tank sit overnight without fish in it.

So what do I do now? I just leave my fish and hope for the best? (and next time I have to add some water, first boil it?)

I just told you. For now, go buy water conditioner. Chlorine can kill very fast. That's what it's supposed to do for things living in water. And in the future, let the water you're going to add to the tank sit without any fussing for a night and then add it. Or use the water conditioner again, I do that, it's easier.

But it's 11PM here, no store open anymore.
So this fish is lost? :(

As far as I know. Just hope for the best, and if it's still alive in the morning, get the conditioner as soon as possible. I've heard of some fish weirdly enough surviving it, but it's pretty doubtful.

Goldfish are pretty hardy, just give him time. Also he needs some sort of air in his tank, but none of that can be helped without going to the store.

It should last a night without air, though. People have kept them in bowls alive for years before (not that I recommend it at all).

Well, I'm going off to bed now, let's hope for the best! I already boiled some water for tomorrow.

Once this fish is all better, I will add another one

I feel like such a broken record. I must have to say this every week, but: goldfish get bigger than you'd think. Unless you have a really big tank, don't get another. Arguably, it's 10 gallons(37L?) to each goldfish.
Anyway, good luck to fishie.

It's probably because he's scared as hell, really.

Just leave him the hell alone. Feed him after a few days, but only a bit. If you give him too much, you're going to have to remove the excess, and that's not going to help him get settled in.

Most of my fish are up and about within a few hours, but the rope fish I got two weeks ago still won't come out of the planted area, even when I tempt him with yummy, yummy krill.

Some fish are just emo.

wtf its a goldfish. fucking leave it alone. have you heard some fake rumor that goldfish are lively when you take them out of their home and stick them in a fucking huge tank?

didn't think so.

if he dies, you may call his cause of death SGDS. Sudden Goldfish Death Syndrome. Because other than having to listen to your sniveling, nobody really gives a fuck.

OP here: I bought some extra fish and a nice aquarium =) Now they're all happy :)

Stop being such a re. Goldfish will NEVER grow as big as you claim in any viable length of time unless they are in hot climates and being overfed.

how many fish and how big of a tank

Yeah, I've had my fantail goldfish for a year and it has maybe grown 1 or 2cm at the most.

My goldfish is about 6 or 7 inches long currently, and 6 years old. However I do live in Chicago and we can get some nasty summers but the aquarium is right over an air conditioner register so it's usually pretty cool. He does get plenty of eat, though.
