Hey /an/,

My hermit crab has already escaped twice from my aquarium tank. First he was under my stereo and then he was behind my computer ports. Is he telling me he doesn't like my tank? :(

He's a nerd and needs to be around electronics to be happy

Do you remember your first thread? I made a 1000 word explanation on how to care for them, what did you do? I don't see any improvement. www.crabbytalk.com is one of the good sites that has their actual needs. It came up on google. Trust me when I say they need better care. Here is a picture of my tank from a few years ago when I took care of them.

Screen on top with a few little clips on the corners should be all you need

He doesn't escape with the branch, he escapes with the electricity cord!

Picture very related.

They have fresh food, the right temperature and humidity, a good water dish with sponge, etc. I am not going to spend a fortune in this you know...

It's a start. There are a FEW things I think are important. First off, you don't need a sponge, as a deep water dish is much better. Next, I would recommend you got some salt in there. Instant ocean only costs about $10, and it will last you your whole lifetime. Next up, I'm glad you got some fresh food, and if you could make sure you include lots of calcium. Eggshells or a cuttlebone will do. You said in the last thread you are getting new substrate, so how is that going? Finally, I would really recommend one small Carrribean and one small Ecuadorian, as they are social animals that live together. I'm sorry if I seem to be butting in on this too much, but they really have a bad reputation, and I spent years taking care of these things. However, I'm sure you didn't plan on spending a fortune, otherwise you would have gotten something like a turtle. I can't tell you what to do. Why is there an electricity cord in there anyway?

It costs $20 bucks the Instant Ocean bag in here. As much as I want to provide them ocean water, that is not going to happen. My first hermit crab when I was in high school never needed the ocean water, so it is not crucial in my opinion.

I am not sure if I should get more crabs, since these two are already pooping a lot the entire tank. But there is plenty of space for 2 more that is for sure.

I added more sand since I notice they like to dig a lot. And the eletricity cord is for the air pump motor to create bubbles in order to have enough humidity.

I understand. I am glad that you are doing your best to care for them right now. I am sure they will do fine in your care. As for them escaping, I would try putting something over the top where the wire is, like a piece of cardboard, and then tape it down on all sides. If you can, put something heavy on it like a book.

I put duct tape in the cord to prevent him from climbing, but just as I return home I saw him trying to escape AGAIN.

I am going to put a book now on top of the tank. He is a very smart one...
