OP, what kind of fish do you like? Neon tetras are a good start and are easy, but obviously are the "first choice" aquarium fish. Black tetras are pretty too, and my personal favorite, pristella tetras, have cool fins (pic). You could fit about 5-6 max. in a 10g. Another nice tetra is the rummynose.
Aside from tetras, some barbs would be suitable--harlequinn rasboras are a popular fish, along with cherry barbs and zebra danios. These would also have to be kept in a school of 4-5.
If you want a single fish, dwarf gouramis are good (but only a dwarf, most others will be unhappy in a 10g). Bettas, too.
The only bottom-dwelling fish I would recommend is a corydoras catfish, which would be happy in a school of 3+.
Make sure you avoid getting large tetras (3-4 inches+) because they won't fit as a school in a 10g. Schooling fishes NEED to school to feel safe, and will freak out and hide all the time without it, possibly dying from stress. Also avoid aggressive fish, unless you get a single small species (there are a couple cichlids that could be kept singly in a 10g), because otherwise they will have territorial conflicts. And DO NOT GET A PLECO, they will not fit in a 10g. Finally, don't buy a fish you haven't researched--for example, "tetra" doesn't mean it's small... silver dollar tetras get to 6+ inches.
