Simple Hardy Fish Anonymous
Well /an/, there's a wedding in about a week and I'm going to have plenty of guests coming through my house and seeing my animals. I have 3 cats, a bearded dragon, and 3 functioning aquariums. However, 1 of those aquariums is completely empty, another houses only a pleco and some guppies, and last houses only 2 gouramis. I'm looking to add a few fish to make the tanks a little more colorful and worth talking about (need something to talk to distant relatives about).

The empty tank is a 10 gallon with decent cover for hiders and an attractive decor.

The gourami tank is a 10-gallon with another good set-up, but the gouramis just don't fill the tank up in my opinion.

The pleco tank is a 30-gallon with no decorations in at all, but I plan to put some in there soon.

All tanks have been up and running smoothly for nearly a year now, so I know the cycles have been fine. I've tested the water and it is good for typical tropical fish. I just want something with some color, an interesting habit, something worth talking about and that is enjoyable afterwards.

Pic related, as I love these little guys and any other kind of Danio.

If you want something interesting, go with a pair of bolivian rams (opposite sex!) in the empty tank, and fill it out with some dither fish like zebra danios or neons. They are fairly colorfull (when happy) and are relatively hardy, friendly and easy to care for compared to other cichlids.

I kept one for about 3-years as a kid before he kicked the bucket and then another that lived for 3 months until he shriveled up out of nowhere (Seriously, I just sprayed him the night before I went to sleep and the next day he was an empty husk).

He's about 7-8 inches. If I have a camera I'd post him, but I do not.

I couldn't find those fish today at any local fish shop. I really thought they'd look good too.

Anyways, I settled on 2 red Honey Gouramis in my empty tank and put a Needlefish (something which I feel will bite me in the ass later) in the 30-gallon. Hopefully he'll eat up the annoying guppies still in there.

Now there's just the question of whether or not live plants are suitable. The 30-gallon needs some decor, but what would look the best in there and fill up the empty space?

Well you said there was a pleco in there right? I'm sorry to say that any real plant you put in there will be eaten, or at least uprooted. I have one of those 14 inch plecos in my tank, and he'll eat any plant I try to put in there. And if he can't eat it or doesn't like it?
He'll uproot it.
Every night.
Until it dies.

The only plant he seems to tolerate is this floating water lettuce type that grows like a weed. Don't know what it's called, but here's a pic.

Anyways, your 30 gallon would do well to have some driftwood in it, as plecos love it and it would give the tank a more natural feel. You can also try some Java moss, which would grow nicely on it too, if your pleco will let it. From what I've heard, most will (mine won't).
