puffed eyes are not a disease itself, its just a symptom. It could be a result of some patogen or parasite working its way in your fish, but most likely cause is inadequate water condition.
Can you describe the situation better? How big is the tank, who else live there, how old is the setup and fish, what is temperature, light, and water change regimes, what do you feed your fish.
If you can, tell exacttly what temperature, pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate you tank has.
Most likely you just screw up with water chemistry and your fish is suffering because of it and got some kind of opportunistic infection. So check and adjust the water quality. Everything should be back to normal in 1-2 weeks once you fix the water. Seriously, in aquariumistic 99% of all problems is water quality.

shit. now that i realize he has "popeye," i'm not entirely sure what to do. all aspects of my water quality are good. i see no other signs of illness. my only options are to quarantine him in a cold bowl or float him in a half-gallon container in the tank, so i guess i'll do the latter with 50% daily water change. i'll go to the store tomorrow and see if i can get a decent cure-all, since i don't know what the root of the problem is. hopefully just stress.

in the year or so i've had him his fins have been eaten like five times, he's battled to the death with another betta, gotten ich, and survived two separate two-hour trips. maybe the stress has finally gotten to him.

Melafix can work well. But I must ask what else you have in the tank with the betta. Bettas should not be in a tank with other betta, including females. Bettas really shouldn't be with a lot of different fish.

hey OP. Don't medicate. Just keep the water super-clean. Pop eye is a disease that is commonly cured by itself, and over-medicating your fish might be counter-productive. If he exhibits any other symptoms, however, you might want to look into medication, but not before.

Also, you may want to think about redesigning your tank's community if he's constantly getting the shit beaten out of him..

Melafix kills bettas, so no.

That's serriously up to interrepation. I've used melafix on my bettas before with... go to any fish forum and mention melafix/bettafix and you'll have an enormous bitchfest. To be honest I'd take any claims of "it kills labyrinth fish" w/ a grain of salt.

Most of the people I've complain that it killed their fish a.) used it like an antibiotic. It's not, it has some antiobiotic properties but it's nothing compared to what an actual medication will do. b.) they can't read the damn directions for dosage. They'll add 1/2, or a quarter dosages... some asses just go "LOL I ADDS CAPFUL." But... it's only my damn opinion and should be taken with a huge grain of salt as well.

That said if you wanted to use it for pop-eye I would just forgo the melafix... if your fish is still eating, try offering it a medicated fish food instead.
