Alright, I have a question for you citizens of /an/.

Which is the better pet, cockatiel or budgie? I own both at the moment, and I'm having a hard time deciding.

So, heaven or hell? Let's fight.
>> Anonymous
Are cockatiels noisier? I pick the one that screams less
>> Anonymous
They can be noisier. Not sure... I used to have a budgie that would pluck the bars when I left the room. It drove me nuts.
>> Anonymous
Woah, people! Don't all come at once! Calm down...

This is one of the slowest boards here. And even though /an/ doesn't hate birds, they aren't /an/'s favorite either.

Have some patience, fag.

I'd choose the cockatiel.
I had one, but it died :(
Now I have a quaker parrot, and I love it!

Cockatiels are more like parrots in my experience. So if you want a pet bird that will fly to your shoulder and demand to be petted, a cockatiel is a better bet.

This little jerk is currently sitting on my shoulder and trying to steal the cookie I'm eating. No, Jojo, cookies are bad for birds.

And they aren't too loud if you teach them to talk. The males learn words very well when they're young, and their speaking voices are significantly quieter than their squawking voices.

Cockatiels like to be petted? :(
My budgies freak out if I put my hand in the cage.

My cockatiel loves getting his head scratched. If I don't, he whines like a little kid. He also loves corn chips.

only if they're hand tamed. Hand-raised birds are the best bet, but birds that you get from a pet store can be comfortable around human hands too. They just need to learn it at a young age.

It can also depend on the bird's individual personality. Jojo (bottom) was from a pet store and lived with another family for 5 years before I got him, and he's actually friendlier than Crash (top) who was hand-raised. Neither of them are particularly afraid of me, though. At least as long as I'm not vacuuming.

Aw, they're cute.

How do you hand-tame birds?
>> Anonymous
i heard budgies are lil bastards. i never owned one...its just what i heard :/
>> Anonymous
I had one who was evil and would bite through anything possible.
She was intelligent, though, for a budgie.
She found a way to spin the little suspended disc on the ladder before she bit through it.

I dunno, they're pretty nice in my experience. I've owned several budgies in my time, and they were fairly quiet (even at their loudest), and while they weren't very affectionate (freaking out when I put my hand in the cage) they weren't much trouble.

My sister had a really affectionate budgie called Tolly when I was a kid. He'd run and fetch bottle tops then laugh like a naughty little boy, and preen you. The budgies we had after him weren't that nice though, they probably weren't handled enough. They also chewed up all our books, Tolly included lol. You can tell what books in my bookshelf date from that time because they've all got ragged top edges.

patiently. It's a simple process, It just takes time and a lot of repetition. There are a zillion books and websites on the subject.

>And they aren't too loud if you teach them to talk.
Lies. My cockateil yells "WHERE ARE CHARLIE WHAT ARE THE CHILDREN WHO I DOING HOW PRETTY WHERE ARE PRETTY CHARLIE CHARLIE CHARLIE CHARLIE" all day long. He can burst eardrums.

Jojo does love to say his own name, and it isn't quiet per se, but it's nowhere near as loud as when he wants to let all the birds within 10 miles know that he just saw a cat outside the window.

We've had a few of those things on the right in OP. the first two were very nice and sang and were happy and jumped around. This last one jumps around and plays but SCREECHES CONSTANTLY ALL THE TIME EVEN AT NIGHT I WANT TO KILL IT.
>> Anonymous
if you have to pick one, I'd pick a budgie.

But if you really want a badass bird, get a quaker.

Cockatiel. They live to be twentysomething, mine died this year at 24!
She was awesome, loved to be held, and was one of the best pets EVER.

This solution to the cockatiel pooping problem would work much better if the bird didn't hate wearing clothes so much.

They tell me he'll get used to it.

Can't you own both? I did.
First I had 2 cockatiels but one eventually died in an accident. So we bought 3 more cockatiels plus two parakeets, male and female.
They got along alright. The parakeets were pretty quiet and very anti-social. The cockatiels were somewhat loud but usually not when I was in the room (kept them in my bedroom.) They were a lot more interesting pets.
Eventually one day I brought home a stray kitten and it managed to kill one of them, so I sold them all off and keep the cat instead.
Also, strangely, one of the cockatiels had asthma. It caused him to be a lot calmer than most birds normally are and he was the most enjoyable one.

Never saw a budgie but I had cockatiel make a nest out of my hair once.
>> Anonymous
Female cockatiels are quieter than the males. Unlike most birds, a lot of the cockatiel "varieties" are sexually dimorphic. The males have the bright yellow heads.
>> Anonymous
I grew up with both, on the whole I was more comfortable with budgies because cockatiels are cocks. Unfortunately one of the budgies would occasionally get it on with his sister and produce a terminally retarded pile of fluff as offspring.

I prefer tiels, all the budgies I've met like to stick to themselves.

My tiel, George, loves to be petted all over and scratched, he can whistle lots of tunes, and to him I'm his mum and hates it if I am out of his sight.

He tries to snatch everything I'm eating, especially apples and weet-bix mash.

Birds are awesome pets, they are super affectionate if handraised, can talk, whistle, are colourful and you can take them anywhere. Some people just don't understand, they think they just stay in the cage all day and are to look at, oh well, their loss.

heh, whoops, my George isn't colourful, guess I can't credit him for that!
