say hello to Domino, my two month old adopted kitty.

she is cute and playful and everything else a kitten should be. however, it is basically impossible for her to lay down for a length of time and sleep unless she is laying on someones (usually my) chest, directly below the neck. its cute when im just sitting on my laptop but when its time for bed and i go to lay down she will crawl up on me and position herself to where i can't move unless i want to disturb her.

how do i "train/teach" Domino to sleep either in a small bed we have for her or anywhere that isn't on top of a family member.

Also, it occured to me while typing this, we only adopted her yesterday so will this behavior fade with time or do we need to start teaching her to sleep by herself?

lay on your side so she can't lay on your chest. It's something she'll probably grow out of, though. My cat used to love going in the shower to the point that he'd jump in while it was running and get mad if I wouldn't let him, but now anytime he heard the faucet he grows running. She's a kitten, she just wants love and affection. Soon she will grow to be a callous aloof little bitch.

She's a fucking kitten. They are clingy and don't like to be alone, especially at 8weeks.

If you don't mind her sleeping on furniture and whatnot, but you specifically do not want her to cuddle on people, then don't let her. Whenever she climbs onto someone, pick her up by the back of her neck (kittens have a lot of neck skin, this doesn't hurt them) and place her somewhere else, such as next to the person or at their feet. Don't let her sit on laps because she probably won't be able to recognize laps = ok, chest = no.

My cat used to do this when she was a kitten. She slowly started finding a lower part of my body to sleep on until she decided on a permanent bed on my legs. If I move too much (read: at all), she'll just get off of me and find another place on the bed to sleep.
Enjoy dealing with a cat on you when you sleep until the day she dies.
