After several reports from my mother of seeing a large bird in our backyard, we have finally identified the culprit! It is a juvenile Osprey that has decided to make our home part of its territory. We have two dogs (one large and one small) and a giant avocado tree. We suspect this Osprey is preying on the possums making lunch of our avocados, but my mother claims it is actually eating the avocados themselves!

While I am very familiar with Red Tails and Peregrines, I have never had an Osprey living so close to my home! Are our dogs in danger? And could it be eating the avocados? It is my understanding an Osprey is a fish eating bird, but we don't have any large bodies of water nearby. A couple small ponds though that do have fish in them. Could that be how he survives?

Capture it and train. Nothing classier than a bird like that perched in your arm. Don't forget to wear a leather glove.

ospreys are part of the falconformes order AKA predator. typically a coastel bird that preys on mainly fish, but has been known to take small birds and mammals.

they are NOT omnivourous and will not eat avacados, as those can be lethal to birds.

Thanks for the info, anon. I guess I'll be keeping a close watch on our little mutt.
