Hey /an/,

I was wondering how big of a tank I would need to keep a second beardie. I have a 50 gallon which is home to my current lizard and was considering getting him a friend. I have a smaller tank to raise the little beardie until he is large enough to be placed with the other one, I just need to know if 50 gallons is enough space for both of them or if I should look into getting something bigger.

Thanks for any advice in advance.

Pic related, being my beardie.

Cute lizard, but I'm afraid I have no experience with lizards to give you any idea.

But I've bumped it for you.

Depends on genders

Two males = bad

Two females = bad too i think

Best to have two different tanks, in different rooms so they cant get stressed when they see each other

Hmm...I was afraid of that. If this is the case, I may have to hold off on getting a second pet then, seeing as how I live in a fairly small apartment, and don't really have the room for a second tank.

oh, and he's nearly full grown...about 16 inches or so.

For mine, I bought a 75 gallon tank. I only have one, but I think most reptiles would prefer having a larger space to move around in, instead of a tiny, cramped up cage like what pet stores usually have them in, for three reasons. A- it allows them exercise when you're not handling them, and when you're feeding them. B- mine chooses a specific spot to poo in, so having two, they may choose different spots. and C- It's less stressful on the lizard when they know they have a place to run and hide when people are lurking around the room. A big terrarium with enough hiding spots, and you'll have a happy lizard.

For two, in my opinion, you'd want a larger tank. Only pair your's if it's a male, with a female, otherwise you're gonna have some very angry beardies. Two females can be together, but never two males. Also, you may wanna use a substrate other than sand. Sand is commonly used for 'desert lizards', though because the stuff you buy in the store is a fine grain, it's gonna do more harm to your baby. There's a load of complications that can happen with sand, so sticking with either the fake grass bedding, peat moss, or even well cleaned top soil (organic), is suitable. Also, don't do coconut shell substrate, because it will bind in their intestine and kill them.

You'll probably wanna get a large water dish for them. I use a Tupperware container about the size of a shoe box. They will play in their water, so cleaning it out often is a pain, but is a must.

Other than that, you have the heating lamps, and basking lamps right? Even a heating plate under the substrate/tank would be a good idea, so that their temperature doesn't flux too much.

They love to climb, so putting some branches in there is a good idea, like madrona or beach wood, but never cedar.

Hah, hope this helps.
