Nobody has ever had interest in domesticating hares. Romans kept in them in captivity for food, but apparently, they turned to rabbits after they found them in Spain.
As for the stupidity of rabbits, depends on what you consider stupid. They don't solve mathematical equations or are on the LHC team.

My rabbits have very clear ways to make themselves understood in what they want and do not want. Apparently, they're smart enough to get their needs satified.
