This is my cockatiel, Bird (he had a name but that was when I thought he was a she) masturbating. It's hard to tell, but he's actually humping the toys on that rope. I didn't think birds could masturbate...

HAHAHAHAHA

You must not have done ANY research before getting a bird

Enjoy your embarrassment when people are over

Well, I've had birds all my life and I've never seen them do that. Then again, I never gave them any kind of toys before that could make it possible to do that.

Besides, what kind of bird book would you find that says, "BTW! Birds like to masturbate on toys".

For serious.

Actually, when I had my cockatiel I had no idea they did that either.

Then one day I heard his little bell start dinging over and over and looked and he was grinding it.

Although, sometimes it's not humping, it's scratching from dryness so add a tiny bit of balm like you do with their beaks.

My parakeet does this all the time.

my cockatiel doesn't masturbate.. does that mean she's female? i think the breeder i got her from said female but this was like eight years ago so i don't remember. and she doesn't talk. i hear males at least pick up some words but i've had her for years and she's never said a word.
she's also albino so.. not visibly sexed.

I'm pretty sure our female cockatiel would masturbate. She'd grind on the perch and peep the whole time.

One more reason I love birds.

Every bird owner I've ever known has had masturbating birds. It's a bird thing, and I can't imagine any long term bird owner not knowing about it.
