Hey /an/ I'm thinking about getting a pet rock, but I'm not quite sure which breed to get. I hear the limestone varieties are pretty tame wheras granite and lava rocks can be kind of aggressive.

Any suggestions?

If you can afford it, get a diamond rock.
It is the hardest metal known the man.
But watch out, it does not like fire.

I personally like the Tiger's Eye type. Beautiful and exotic

I dunno, clay might be a good starters pet.
Might be a tad easier to begin with than even limestone.

Personally, I'm fond of Labradorites, both rough coated (pic related) and smooth. They may look like snot at first, but with a bit of grooming and the right lighting, they are the most beautiful rocks ever.

QUARTZ! most beautiful stone/rock in the world is a nice clear piece of quartz.

amethyst are fine to, maybe smoky if you if you'd like a different color.

pic stolen from google, i have tons of beautiful ones but no camera right now.
>> Bitter Anon !!WJLRQ1cwCyZ
     File :-(, x)
Here are a bunch of labradorite pups, aren't they adorable?

>>135196
Opals are okay. They tend to come with gear already though, so if you're looking for something pretty and cheap, they re a lot easier to find than labradorites.

>>135190
Thanks. I've got one that has a scorpion infection, but it's pretty terminal :(

>>135199
Hint: those are all basically the same. Amethyst, "Smokey" quartz, etc are just the designer-rock names for the same compound. They're fine rocks and all, but a pretty name doesn't make them worth more.

     File :-(, x)
If you want a pet rock for protecting your house or even protection when traveling, then I reccomend a Flint or Obsidian. They may seem to be fragile and dull, but when trained correctly they can be both beautiful and deadly!

Pic related, as it is a Obsidian Blue, trained in the art of warfare.

Wow, that is a beautiful specimen! I had no idea obsidians had a blue variation.

Here are some agates, they're the Aussie Shepherds of rocks. Useful and come in an amazing array of colours, especially the Jaspers.

It's the pet paper thread all over.
Anyways, Sapphires are mild mannered rocks, but are hard to get.
>> Anonymous
>>135207

amethyst is distinctly purple due to iron impurity's and smoky quartz dark due to radiation. really its all about whats in the quartz and how it formed and at what temperature, but thats why quartz is the best, there is so many different kinds of the same thing.

What the hell! Don't generalize Granite and Lava rocks! Just because some owners are irresponsible assholes doesn't mean the breed itself is bad! BESIDES the fact that lava rocks are waaay nicer in general than granite.

>> Anonymous

Bismuth is a METAL. If you had read the OP's post, you see that he wants a pet ROCK, not a METAL. Good job trying to get him to take care of something beyond his means or experience. You're probably an irresponsible metal owner, I bet you polish yours because they "look pretty" instead of letting them form an oxidation coat. How would you like it if someone RUBBED OFF YOUR SKIN every time it grew back?!

Topaz for the win. It's not only strong and beautiful, but the only reason they're not in the "precious stone" category is because they're more common (and therefore less expensive.) It's like getting high quality without the overpriced bullshit.

I like to take mine swinging on my neck. Pic is not mine but a pretty one none the less.

Special breeds are nice, but I'm more of a rescue rock kinda girl. I'd go to your local shelter and adopt just a demestic rock, they need love too!
>> Anonymous
     File :-(, x)
This is an increasingly rare breed due to global warming, but I love tillite. You can only find them around the glaciers in Greenland. Some people say they're ugly, but they make up for it in personality.

BTW, VERY IMPORTANT!!! If you have pet paper, make sure your rock is big and able to defend itself! Also, make sure your scissors are kept at higher grounds so your rock doesn't accidentally smash them.

Woah woah WOAH. Don't tell me you actually EAT CHEESE? Surly it's awful enough knowing that people actually make a trade out of harvesting moon rocks and selling them as consumables, but fueling the trade by buying into it and taking pleasure in the mutilation of those poor creatures makes you just as bad a person as those who slaughter the rocks.

You should be ashamed of yourself, even if you acted in ignorance. I have it right in my mind to call PETA on this!

I wish I could get a pet rock but I'm allergic, unfortunately. I've heard that there's some that suit people with allergies beter but it's just too severe. I've handled rocks at friends houses but the symptoms come almost always; bruises, scrapes, bleeding. I even got a concussion once.
=(
My parents bought me some scissors when I was a kid but it's just not the same. Once a rock fan, always a rock fan.
>> Anonymous
>>135657

Shelters are good places to get rocks, but you may have to deal with behavioral problems from your rocks, considering many rocks in shelters went through abusive families.

There's nothing wrong with getting a rock from a good, reliable breeder as well. Stay away from the shady ones. For example, if you decide to get a diamond pet rock (and these ones really get the ladies), stay away from De Beers.

Oh of course, you're going to blame the type of rock and not put any responsibility on the owner.

You know, it's not the rocks fault it was bred to be used at a weapon. In the right conditions any rock can be as sweet and gentle as, say, an amber or an agate.
>> Anonymous

Try not to get a mixed breed, they can get pretty large, and can be hard to care for if not properly trained.

Actually I have seen a lot of wild limestone in the area and I think they get quite aggressive when it rains and around certain substances. For a starter stone I would suggest granite, there are plenty of them out there and they are very durable, but they don't seem to do well around other rocks, having a natural urge to push themselves to the top.

Proud owner of a lava rock here. They're actually not so bad, especially if you live next to some body of water. Maybe it's just mine, but it seems that lava rocks love to swim and be by water.

You should do your best to keep your pet rock away from large amounts of water. They are not good at swimming at all and will just sink to the bottom. The more agile pet rocks can sometimes avoid drowning by 'skipping' along the top of a body of water to the opposite bank, but you should do your best to retrieve them quickly before they find themselves in the water or soft mud. Also if it cannot be avoided then try to keep your pet rock out of major contact with flowing water or it might get worn out.
>> Anonymous
>>136704

I've found that it's fun to skip some rocks across bodies of water, like lakes. If I'm really lucky, the rock will skip several times!

OP here - Thanks to all your input! I decided to rescue a few common stones rather than buying a purebred rock.
They're not demanding at all, no polishing necessary - and when I put them together they do some pretty neat tricks.
