A while back I saw something on the discovery channel about pigs, and apparently if they get loose they can turn feral very fast. So does that mean they aren't as domesticated as other animals or just that they can adapt quickly?

Also, are there other animals that can turn feral very fast like that?

It means they're intelligent. Pigs are right up there with dolphins, chimps, parrots and us.

cats

dogs have been domesticated so long that most species would die in the wild

just look at the tests with wolves and dogs

the dog will give up and look at the person in the room

All that stirring of old instincts which at stated periods drives men out from the sounding cities to forest and plain to kill things by chemically propelled leaden bullets, the blood lust, the joy to kill -- all this was Wilbur's, only it was infinitely more intimate. He was ranging at the head of the pack, running the wild thing down, the living meat, to kill with how own teeth and wash his muzzle to the eyes in warm blood.

>dogs have been domesticated so long that most species would die in the wild

Uneducated catfag spotted! I guess toxoplasmosis really do make people stupid.

When released into the wilds, most dogs will quickly become feral and thrive. In fact, there are several famous populations of feral dogs that have lived for hundreds of years after they've escaped from their human masters, like the Carolina dogs of America, the dingos of Australia, and the pariah dogs of India.

I want to see feral bands of poodles or chihuahuas. I bet they'd hunt in packs and be like little furry pihranas.

Poodles are actually hardcore hunting dogs. They have above-average intelligence and agility and will fuck up a forest if you release a large population of poodles into it.

Chihuahuas are useless, though. I think the aztecs bred them for eating or something.

miniature poodles ? 'poodles'

Yes, until they actually find food, chow it down, run about and die of stomach torsion.
Way to go.

It would take hundreds of years for dogs to go as feral as the ancestor's. Pigs are hardly domestic at all. Cow's, cats, and guinea pigs are much more domesticated. Pigs are at the same level as ferrets, and cockatiels.

Hogzilla says Hi from beyond the grave

Also yes pigs are pretty much feral from the get-go and once they escape... They grow hair and start looking more like boars, ill-temper included.

no, dingo's were brought to australia THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of years ago by the aboriginies from
islands near Indonesia.
They werent pets who people ditched.
They dont bark either.

but they eat babies, right?
>> Anonymous
>>198539
No they weren't. Aborigines didn't have dogs, because dogs didn't exist back then! The dingos were brought in tens of thousands of years later by Indonesian traders. Check your facts.

all such facts were eaten by babies, who in turn were eaten by dingos

Also, ferrets were domesticated at the same time as cats. Also, your use of apostrophes is so incorrect as to be upsetting.

Cats turn immediatly feral: see your back yard
Parrots are instantly feral: see quakers in florida etc..
Dogs turn feral: again see back yard
Horses: domesticated for 1000s of years or until you take their bridle off
Pet fish: see populations of popular aquarium fish all over florida, california, and hawaii et al.
I don't give a holstein very long in the wild but a longhorn or brahman doenst need you for shit

I'm sure it helps your god complexe to think that all of our cuddlies need us, but uhmmm...

Parrots and fish aren't domesticated animals to begin with

Parrots aren't, you're right there, but parakeets are domesticated by now. Also, there's lots of domestic varieties of fish-- you think bettas and fancy goldfish look that way in the wild?

Most? Thrive? Oh, god, don't give the dumbshit pet owners ideas. Most of the dog breeds that people would want to give the boot anyway (little yappers) would die in a second. We've created plenty of breeds that are completely unequipped to live in the wild.

What the fuck? I think you don't understand what 'feral" means. If I let my cat outside, I can still approach her as I always have and she is still tame. She hasn't, by some stroke of almighty nature, turned wild. Same goes for dogs. Many stray dogs and cats seek out humans even after being released.

Parakeets are not domesticated. If you let them go , and they breed the chicks will grow up to be as wild as any bird. The only thing man has done is change how they look. The same goes for goldfish, and betta's. In one generation they all go back to their wild ancestral appearance.

Fancy gold fish used to all look like little mini-carps, but after a few hundred years of chinese inbreeding with deformaties we get mutant freak goldfish.
