Hey, /an/.

I have a cat. She's 17 (that's her in the pic). We've had her all this time. She's an outdoor cat, but she occasionally comes in during bad weather, cold weather, hot weather, and when she's sick. Sometimes she trots into the den or the living room, where I'll pet her or let her chill or whatever.

My mom has been diagnosed with kidney disease, and she's on dialysis at home. She does dialysis everyday. As such, the cat isn't allowed in the house any more. She can come in the laundry room, the garage, or the porch (where she hangs out a lot these days), but that's it. She still tries to come inside, though, and I feel bad for kicking her back out. But my mom's already had peritonitis once. It almost killed her.

I'm not asking for any advice, though. I'm just sharing my story.

I'm stupid. Why can't the cat come in if the mom's on dialysis or whatever?

tl;dr, did a quick ctrl+f on "cats," "fur," "animals," etc and couldn't find anything of relevance, so I'm pretty sure it wouldn't tell me what I was asking about anyway.

If you missed the picture of the person with the catheter sticking out of its stomach and failed to realize that cat dander can then enter the person's peritoneum and fuck shit up...

I hope your mom is on several lists for kidney transplant. I happen to work at a nephrology office and home dialysis patients do have to let go of their pets often. Some however let other family members take care of the pets until they can get their transplant...I've seen patients go on the waitlist and if everything goes smoothy, get hooked up with a new kidney in a matter of months...sometimes years, but usually those are the ones with complications. Dialysis should really be a temporary thing...less of course your mum has one foot in the coffin already.

I'm on hemodialysis myself right now.
as long as you keep the supply room for your mom's peritonial gear isolated from the cat, I don't really see the cat as being an issue.
I have 3 cats indoors, and 4 outside. I also have a dog. None of these have ever presented the slightest problem with infection as long as you keep the access clean.
Also, clean any litter boxes at least once per day.

many people on dialysis don't qualify for transplant due to health issues.
Those that do, it's not always easy to find a living donor, and the cadaveric list is now 6+ years for kidney.

Give your cat to someone who can take care of it properly. There's no reason to make it suffer when there are people out there that are perfectly able to take care of animals.
