I was wondering if anyone has ever 'charmed' a squirrel into letting them pet it. With most animals, I can 'communicate' by calmly gradually approaching them with open hands and begin to pet them. Sometimes an animal won't let me get close without a bribe of food, but that is usually only with very small animals (such as a young stray cat).

I don't know why, but I'm in love with squirrels. I also know that squirrels can be rabid, and are quite likely to bite. How should I go about approaching a squirrel?

Squirrels on campus here are used to people, as they see them walking from point A to point B, but I don't know how many people actually try approaching them.

What laws are there against owning squirrels? I know I can't have one in my apartment, but my roommate (cousin) and I may be moving into a condo for the next semester/year.

Laws on owning squirrels?

Depends on what state/country you live in. Check with city hall, health departments and other relevant county offices to determine whether there are special laws regarding squirrel pet ownership in your state, county or town.

I did!

This was about 10 years ago when I was living in Seattle.

There was this squirrel who was missing an eye. She wasn't afraid of people.

I'd leave out plastic spoons with peanut butter on them until she'd come to the glass sliding door when nothing was out there and I'd hand her the spoon. I did that for a week and then was able to gently pet her a few times every time before she'd walk away.

I'd find the spoons under the tree in our backyard.

A friend and I went to this lake where there were geese and gosslings, and we flapped our arms like mad to scare away the geese away from the babies and got to pick the babies up. Man, those sure were some pissed off birds.
