/an/, I'm still not exactly sure...
How can one tell the difference between a Mudpuppy/Waterdog and an Axolotl?
As a kid I had 2 in a tank (I also had a seperate tank with 2 firebellied newts at the time). The guy at the petstore told me they were Axolotl's, but their gills shrunk and became tiger salamanders. So I wound up converting my 40gal from a water tank to a land tank. It was cool to see the process when I was little, but it's a decade later and I'd like to have an aquarium with some non-evolving salamanders (lol pokeman terms).

Also, could anyone tell me if there are any compatable fish that I could throw in with them? I'm a fan of strange or unique looking creatures, like Dragon Gobys, Rope Fish, Freshwater Eels, and some Loaches. I don't think any of these would work with an Axolotl, since the fuckers seem to eat anything and everything, I often fed them worms and guppies and whatnot... But is there anything cool that would work well with it?

tl;dr REAL LIFE MUDKIPS

AFAIK axolotls have shorter, more rounded snouts while mudpuppies have quite long tapering "doggish" heads.

Also mudkips.

Its an easy difference.

also, dont put ANYTHING in with your axolotl unless its another axolotl. Nothing goes with it, fish bite their gills, they carry stuff that can kill an axolotl also. leave them by themselves. seriously, you're an idiot if you put fish in with them.

i thought axolotl were cannibals and they eat their own as long as they are bigger than the prey unless thats just the larvae

I really wanted to have one, or a newt or something like that. But those guys need realy low temperature. I have enough trouble keeping fishtank at low 80s when the heat wave hits, 60s are no option (27 C and 18 C for metricfags).
