Pitbull + Cats = ? Anonymous
I'm facing a tough decision. A friend of mine, through no fault of her own, has been evicted from her home. She really needs a cheap place to stay but she's having no luck because she has a pitbull and so few places will allow her in. I don't know what kind, but it's a big one. She said it was a good protective dog.
She says it's very well-trained and gentle, and I know she's a responsible person.
Well, my family really wants her to move in with us. She'd pay us some rent and we really need that kind of money. We live in a great neighborhood for dogs, near a lot of woods and everything. They expect that she will keep the dog in her room, not letting it out unsupervised. It's used to that.
But we have 2 cats! They're indoor cats and don't like dogs. One of them is a real scardycat and essentially lives in my room.
I'm completely against it. I'm not afraid of pitbulls myself but I'm really worried about it being around the cats. I know it's never lived with cats before.

What do you think? Pic is the scardycat (she's even afraid of the camera!)

Can't you just keep the pitbull outside, and the cats in?

keep the cats in their own room, when you let the dog outside or it's on a walk you can let them roam the house. My cat is way fucking terrified of one of my dogs, but she manages to avoid him well enough. So long as you seriously keep an eye on where the cats are and where the dog is at all times, you'll be fine.

But I assume it'll be inside every night. At least one of my cats is used to roaming the house.

She wants it to sleep indoors, it's used to it. It gets to be about 20 degrees at night here anyway.

Although once we took care of a cat that didn't get along with my other cats. It lived in it's own room for a few months.

How about keeping the dog in the garage with a heat lamp near it's bed/kennel so it wont get cold? That's what my family did for our lab when she was younger (now that she's old she stays inside all the time though haha). We live in Colorado which can get quite cold as well and our dog was always happy and healthy so I'd assume garage+heat lamp is a good way to keep an outside dog comfortable during the cold night.

I'm sure everything will be fine.

Your friend who's moving in with you is going to have to make some sacrifices, and that includes her dog. If you have cats in the house, then her dog needs to stay outside. Period. If she (or the dog) were in any position to be picky about their living situation, that would be another story. But they aren't.

Just a question, why was your friend evicted in the first place?

I agree with this Anon 100%.

Your family is already doing her a huge favor by letting her move in, etc. Yes, it's nice that she's paying some rent, but your family isn't in the business of running an apartment or a hotel. It's not your job to cater to this woman's every need. It's her that needs to adapt to suit your situation, not the other way around.

cats and dogs can get along... when i first got my dog (a red queens land healer- they are cattle dogs and he is not friendly to people or other dogs some times... depending on how they act) he chased my big cat around and had him in his mouth the first day he was here... luckily the cat was fine... just a little shaken up... any way they are good friends now, they can sit in the same room together and the cat even allows the dog to sniff its ass... keep them seperated at first and then to get them better acquainted by putting the dog in his crate (preferably one that is all wire so the dog can see the cat in every direction, that way the cat will not disappear behind the wall of the crate causing the dog to get excited) in a room with a door so you can lock the cat in that room, so its now: You, the dog in a crate, and the cat (if you have more than 1 bring them in separate at first so they wont play among them selves) and just sit and supervise, if the dog is acting calm you can give it affection or a treat, and if its barking and growling say no, and if this persists let the cat out of the room, and leave the dog in the crate... now you can wait until the dog calms down and you can try reintroducing the cat , or (if the cat wont cooperate) you can leave the dog in bed (the crate) for another 20 minutes let him out and try again some other time..................
