Need spider identification Anonymous
These suckers are ALL OVER my damn apartment building and they look pretty mean. There is probably at least 6-7 outside my door near the stairs. Can anyone identify this for me and tell me whether I should avoid it like the plague or not?

Thanks.

"Males are distinctively different from females in that they have two large palps that look like boxing gloves. These palps are often mistaken for fangs or venom sacs, but they are in fact the male genitalia."

Holy shit, it's got two dicks on it's face!

"This ulceration 'scabs' over within three weeks from the initial bite, leaving a permanent scar. If the bite is delivered in fatty tissue, the lesion may be very deep and extensive, not healing for over two or three years. Systematic reactions to Hobo Spider poisoning include severe headaches, nausea, vomiting, soreness and flu-like symptoms. In extreme cases where the bite was not taken care of early, skin graft, amputation, and the possibility of bone marrow failure may occur."

Try not to get bit.

Probably a harmless funnelweb, they are pretty difficult to tell from hobo spiders and usually thats the case. do you live in a hobo spider region?

Is Michigan a Hobo Spider region?
>> Anonymous
In Australia we call them garden spiders, and they're completely harmless. It's probably a different type since you're in another country but they look exactly the same.

You Americans are pretty funny about spiders, you've no idea what actual poisonous spiders are.
>> Resurii
I'm pretty sure it's a funnel spider if you're in Michigan. I caught one at work and let it outside one day. They're fast and big.. and.. creepy!

But they don't have seriously poisonious spiders anyway.

WTF every retard on /an/ says every spider is a hobo spider. First of all, the OP is in Michigan, well outside of the range of the hobo spider.

Second, the markings on this one are way too distinct. Hobo spiders usually have muted markings. Thirdly, it's impossible to reliably tell a hobo spider from a bunch of similar funnel web spiders without examining the genitalia under magnification. WTF is /an/'s obsession with hobo spiders anyway? A fucking brown recluse can cause more damage.

That looks like a normal grass spider. They are indeed harmless.

McFucking kill yourself, op.

Because this board moves so fast that one extra "id this spider" thread is going to really make a negative impact amirite? Especially considering the fact cat threads easily outnumber spider threads 4 to 1.

Uh...what? I'm well aware that posting cats is the popular thing to do, i'm pointing out how this thread isn't hurting the board in anyway whatsoever. So fuck off.

Blatantly same fucking person.

They're simply a waste of space on the board.

1) There are very, very, few dangerous spiders: Recluse, Australian funnel-web, Black widow...and those are easily identified and well known. If it's not one of the well known dangerous species, then guess what? It's NOT DANGEROUS!

2) If you really do have an academic interest in identifying a local spider, then for god's sake don't trust it to /an/. Consult a field guide to insects for your country/area, or inquire at a local nature center or agricultural extention service where you can talk to an expert entymologist rather than a bunch of wannabees and trolls.
