I was wondering this recently, but how come dogs and cats and other animals know to look straight to your face? As in, if you walk in a room or pet a dog they always look at you directly.
How do they know to? Is it just instinct? Is that how they recognise us?

The same reason you know to look somebody in the face.

The voice comes from there. And they dimly recognize some things, like your mouth.

most of the dogs i've had actually won't look you in the eye, but the one i have now will stare at you while you're talking, and cock her head like she understands you. it is fucking adorable.

I wonder this sometimes too, even though I realise it's totally retarded.

My dog does that whenever I raise my voice in a happy tone of voice.
