/an/, are there any techniques to get dogs to obey you that would be useful with badly behaved dogs that aren't yours?
My aunt has two small dogs that she's never properly trained or socialized. They're dominant over her. She rewards them when they've been bad, lets them stop every 5 feet on walks, and never properly house trained the second one. They jump on people, bark at other dogs on walks, and most obnoxiously will bark at you if you don't do what they want you to (try going to the bathroom while dogs stand outside the door barking...it's no good).
Before anyone says make her train them: I can't. I've tried to for years and it hasn't worked. She seems to think that obedience training is cruel. However, she's the only extended family I have that I care about at all, so I want to make her dogs obey me, if not her, so that I can tolerate visiting her.
In before kill them with fire, kick them, or eat them.

Thought of that, but she wouldn't continue with anything he would say to do. Or, if you're telling me to do what he does, I suppose I could hunt down the TV schedule for the show or try to get a book for cheap.

Hrm, forgot that one.

Most of the dogs I dogsit are pretty well behaved but some have their problems. Usually though, once the owner is gone and they realize I'm in charge they behave much better and once the owner is back they're bad again. Mainly I would just suggest ignoring their bad behavior and rewarding their good behavior.

Also, your aunt is probably thinking of old obedience trainers yanking on choke chains. Today obedience training is mostly positive reinforcement. It will help both of you and the dogs will be happier as well.
