Oh dear, we have a book floating around somewhere with a cover using that picture. When I was younger I always wondered if there are really komodo dragons which are THAT big. It looks huge on the photo, but that might just be the perspective!?

Well, some types of monitors DID get that big. Megalania was a superhueg monitor lizard that lived in Australia only a few dozen thousand years ago.

And if you want to get technical, Cretaceous mosasaurs were in the varanid (monitor) family, and they got to be upwards of 40 feet in length. Strictly aquatic, though.
