I introduced a kitten to my cat with no problems, but of course the older cat *is* retarded and wouldn't know an intruder if it bit her on the ass, which he frequently did.
One thing is to not make your cat anxious when the kitten is around. Don't hover over her - stay close in case she really goes for it, but don't leap on her if she does something wrong. You'll just be transferring your own negative influences onto her feelings around the kitten.
And very importantly, feed your older cat first and give her cuddles first. She's used to being top dog (lol) so there's no point in being "fair" about it when she won't understand fairness. Also, don't make them use the same litter box or food dish. Remove the food dish to around a corner or the other side of the house for both their comforts, and they'll work it out themselves eventually. Once the kitten's of a decent age and able to defend itself, if they're not friends by then they could at least mutually ignore each other then. ;)
^ But then you could have the dream scenario I've got where my two cats groom each other and wrestle 8D
