this is horrible.
i don't like fish that much but people will be getting them left and right as 'gifts'. everyone will see them as disposable.

These fish are HARDCORE! Now where's the one with the skull on fire while eating an orphaned baby at? Damn PeTA fags are gonna have a field day.
>> Anonymous
I wouldn't see them as disposable, it would be quite expensive for the laser etching fish just as Fluorescing tetras are around $5 each.

We had a giant gourami in my store a while ago that was tattooed with pink polka-dots. Looked a lot better than just plain ol' boring white. =D

Still stupid though, the worst are those goddamn 'jellybean' parrots.

wonder why they don't say human tattooing is cruel and unnatural >.>
>> L.M.F.C
Despite the knee-jerk OMG ANIMAL CRUELTY reaction, I don't think this is necesarily inhumane. Fish are fragile creatures, if this process was really that painfull the loss of livestock would be enormous and surly would outweigh the cost of production. Tacky? Yes. Abuse? No.

These are plain ol' domestic mollies. imho the greater tragedy is the capturing of wild reef fish for sale in the marine trade. Particularly moorish idols, mandarin fish, and others that rarely live more than a fews weeks or months in captivity.

Its not cruelty, in my opinion. It IS pointless and silly and very dumb, but hey.
It's not like fish have strong memories and will JESUS SHIT remember this torment on their poor little fish scales FOREVER. A few minutes of tattooing, and then the fish are off. They'll forget or disregard it when their life goes to normal again. Fish aren't humans, guys, its not like they're getting trauma that they will look back on all their lives.

You forget one thing - the cost of fish in the fishfarm sold in thousands is about 20 times less then the cost of fish sold in fish store to the general public. Have you seen Petco or any other chain pet shops selling fish? There is about 5 dead fish for every sold one - and they still make profit.
And yes, this process is painful and often fatal - iirc about 30% fish die during the procedure, some more die soon after of infection. Fish that survive often have poor health as the "tatoo" does not fully heal. Etching fish in acid and then adding paint to the wound does not make fish any healthier, you know.

>>196795Etching fish in acid and then adding paint to the wound does not make fish any healthier, you know.

I never said it was good for them, only that there are worse things that we do to fish. Yes, the prices of fish in pet stores are set to compensate for a good portion of each shipment dying. I did work at a Petco for many years. Fish loss is huge, but it's huge across the board. Tetras, angels, livebearers, dyed species like painted glass fish and cotton candy tetras... plenty of them would die, but the dyed fish didn't die any more than the other captive-breds.

Also, according to the 2nd link someone posted, the dyes are either injected subQ or laser-burned in. No acid, though ;)

Doesn't the link say that this is one of the methods being used, but everybody is pretty tight lipped about what exactly goes on? We don't know that everyone is using this procedure.

Also,
>>Fish with darker colouration need 4-5 blasts from the laser to bleach their melanophore pigment cells, which causes massive blistering beneath the stratum compactum.

This is straight from the second link. Doesn't sound nice.

If you worked at a Petco for many years, and you know fish are fragile, it's surprising to see such an apathetic standpoint on what obviously has a chance to kill a fish, even if just indirectly. I worked in the specialty department of a Petsmart and our fish loss wasn't as bad as some people here seem to think. Could have just been that store in particular, though, we worked pretty hard to keep our fish healthy. We also didn't sell painted or dye injected fish.

After visiting China town, where you can see tons of fish cut in half on display- yet still gasping for air,
Also watching plenty of programs with people gutting a fish alive,
I have a feeling this isn't the most 'inhumane' thing done to fish. Honestly. It may be unnecessary and stupid, but hey, so is being so obsessed with good food that you'll eat something still living. And the shops that do that aren't getting shut down.

o.0() whoa I missed that part on the first read. Even so, most of Petco's animals are doomed. Yes, I'm in a very apethetic mood.

I used to go cod fishing off the coast of Plymouth MA, the first mate would fillet all the cod caught during every trip on the way back into port. They are filleted alive, which exposes they're still beating heart. They only need those muscle tissues to swim, not to stay alive. The rest of the carcass is thrown back into the water for the sea gulls. The gulls know about this. They circle the boats in great swarms as they head back in to port. This has been going on for generations, and the gulls have integrated this into their normal behavior.
They pick apart whats left of the cod. I assure you, these fish are still alive.

These cod, do not meet very nice ends, as in most of nature. Its rather violent.

Also, there is a small species of brown shark called a dog fish. They are a natural predator to the cod. They put up a fight when caught, but they don't make good food. The standard procedure when a dog fish is brought up is to break its spine over your knee. They have sharp teeth so you have to be careful. You dump it back in the ocean and watch it swim a tight spiral down. To me this does not appear fun.

The point is, they are fish. They are really only good for eating and amusement.

The tattoos are ugly though.

I understand procedure and culture and all, but can't you just throw the fucking thing back without killing it needlessly?

The dog fish are killed because they eat the cod. Less dog fish, more cod.

Whoever doesn't think this through isn't getting the whole story. Over half of the 'tattooed' fish go into shock and die just from the tattooing process. I honestly wouldn't mind if even -most- of them survived this process, because it's only a few minutes of pain, but when you're losing more than you're getting, you're doing it wrong.

Mortality rate is 80% or something ridiculous like that. We get them in our store and all they do is sit on the bottom of the tank and slowly die. They're so stressed out we need to put a shitload of stress-zyme or water conditioner w/ aloe in it so they can grow back their slimy coat.

I'd say half die from stress
another large chunk die from disease from having no slimy coating protection.

It's stupid, plus they lose their colour when they're older.

Fish with airbrush hearts carved into them are retarded, and only marketed to mongoloids and fat little girls.
