ITT: has anyone here been bitten, stung or poisined? i'm talking jellyfish, bees, ants, scorpians, spiders, platapus, ect. picts would be nice

i hear you can only recieve the black widow anti-venom only once in a life time.

Bees, wasps and ants, yes. My girlfriend has a whole bunch of black widows on her porch, she says, though I've never seen them. Also, platypus are cool, I think it's only the male that produces venom.

Wasp, bee, ant, horse fly, japanese beetle, even a caterpillar. I didn't see the caterpillar at first, since he blended in perfectly with the leaves, and my back was to him. I just barely moved my elbow backward and brushed him slightly and got a pretty painful sting. I would say worse than any bee or wasp sting I've ever had.

I've been stung by bees a few times. Careless boyhood was the cause. Catching bumblebees in jars, stepping on them when they collect pollen on dandelions.

The last time I got stung was on my foot. Somehow the stinger penetrated through half an inch of rubber. After that I've been deathly afraid of anything with wings and a stinger.

I was stung two times in the belly by a wasp (I believe) when I was about 14. (A third sting was just shallow) I lifted my t-shirt milliseconds after the first sting. It hurt so much that I cried. I've been quite afraid of bees and wasps since then.

Got stung by a jellyfish when I was a kid, playing in the shallows of a lake. The total surprise was what made it more painful, but I don't think it's any worse than a bee sting.

Honey bee: didn't hurt

Bumble bee: an annoying amount of pain

Yellow jacket: I was little, but a fuck ton of pain if my memory serves me well

Bullet Ant: I was crying on the jungle floor in Costa Rica for 5 minutes

Bristleworm/fireworm (reef tanks): touching one is like touching a prickly pear cactus, lots of mildly painful tiny little spines that are damn near impossible to get out, and you won't know you have them till your skin gets rubbed the right way then you feel them.

Pigmy rattlesnake: grazed my hand, hurt, but not nearly as much as the bullet ant. More swelling/discoloration than agonizing pain. My hand was worthless for a day or two though, while I got over the bullet pretty quick.

Volitans Lionfish: It was small, and dead, and it poked me through 2 plastic bags so I probably didn't get hit very well, but it still stung a good bit, ran my hand under scalding water to denature the proteins and it was over.

Foxface Rabbitfish: got me pretty fucking good, hurt like hell, my hand was swolen/painfull/useless for a day or two, also only time I actually felt sick to the stomach/headaches/nausea

Orangespot Rabbitfish: grazed me, same as the lion fish, owwie, hot water, over.

Smith's Fang Blenny: didn't feel it, but apparently I was bitten.

Natural Poisonings:
Polk Salad berries: sick to the stomach that night, over.

Palytoxin (from carelessly fragging my zoas): chest pain, upset stomach, headach/nausea. Didn't sleep that night out of fear and uncomfortableness, finally passed out around noon and woke up later feeling fine.

I'm sure there are more but thats all I can think of at the moment

Once by a bumblebee when I was about 4.
Then just on July 1st (Canadafag here), and I was in the park waiting for fireworks. Myself and some friends were sitting on the riverbank, and there must have been a red ant nest around. Or fire ant, whatever. I have three bites still on my knee, and 5 just under my butt. (femanon, short shorts ect.)

Once pretty bad by a jellyfish on Galveston's eastern beaches. Many times by fire ants, one incident with what was probably 50-100 bites - my leg was red and bumpy up to my knee. Also been finned by a freshwater cat (pretty mildly thankfully, with no recurring symptoms) and have had the dorsal spines of many a bluegill and perch implanted in my hand. I ate them as revenge. I also once narrowly avoided being bitten by a small (2.5') blacktip shark I caught in Galveston. Those teeth are nasty.

The ones in my country spit corrosive liquids (called "spitfires") secret a nasty poison through spines on their backs, or shed microscopic hairs that become embedded in the skin and quickly become insanely irritating. Obviously not all species of catapillar do this, but some are pretty nasty. Mind you, I used to pick spitfires up all the time, never got stung, kept them as pets. Stung the crap out of anyone else that got close to them though. I kept them in my bedroom, they kept everyone else out. I loved those little green fucks.

Dunno if any of our catapillers actually STING you though.

I don't know what the fuck it was, but I remember being on a beach, sitting in the shallow water.

I've handled black widows and brown recluses in order to relocate them (I have a soft spot for spiders) and I've never been bitten by them. I was stung by a scorpion during the field training exercises during basic training, and by countless bees and wasps but jesus nothings ever ever ever hurt as much as that damn worm! Wrong. There hasn't been a death from widows in decades. Different species of widow have different levels of toxicity as well.

I've only been stung by a South African Flat-rock scorpion and a Superstitionia donensis scorpion. Harmless, not worth talking about really. But a few nights ago I stepped a couple inches away from an Arizona Bark Scorpion who was resting near my cat at night. I'll eventually get stung by one of those since they're frequent house guests.

Stung by bees a few times when I was small, usually by stepping on them. No big deal, I'm not allergic. I don't mind needles, so this probably helps me.

Stung by Portuguese man o' wars twice, most recent one was like a year ago, and it wasn't too big so it wasn't too bad. Got stun on my left shoulder and upper chest, had very minor muscle spasms and it left welts, but the pain was no worse than a bunch of bee stings at once.

However, my first man o' war sting was fucking bad. I was like 7, (grew up in Hawaii and live there while college is out) swimming around when one wrapped around me. Apparently it was fucking huge, I never actually saw it because it was underwater. Got stung pretty much everywhere except my face and neck. I would have been fucking toast, but my mom saved my ass from drowning. Pretty much lost all motor control while thrashing about trying to get the shit off me.

Jesus fuck nuts, I'm never going swimming in the ocean again. Ever. That just sealed it for me.

Somewhat related, I was swimming in the gulf of Mexico one year while on vacation. I was on a boogie board with my cousins, just paddling around just off shore. My mom starts screaming at us to come back in, hurry, omg get back here and the like. I start swimming back and as I look down at the water to see what the fuck, I almost had a panic attack-- fuck loads of tiny blue jellyfish, TONS of them bobbing around us. I don't know how we made it back without getting stung. Then my cousin stepped on one on the beach and they rushed him to the hospital. He was alright, mostly scared.

I've been stung by bees numerous times.

I've been bitten by spiders many times but one time was exceptionally weird. I was watching arachnophobia and i felt something pinching the skin on my collar bone fucking little brown spider bit me. Pulled him off with my shirt.

I'm not sure if this pertains to this thread but when I was about 12 years old I stepped on a fucking sea urchin. By far having nearly 20 of those spines pulled out of my feet by my mother was the most painful things I've ever experienced.

You would think that that's the reaction of someone who has been stung by a man o' war (>>276077here), but I feel like it's just part of nature and that's something I have to deal with. I guess I'm just very understanding that this is a risk you take when going into the water, since they warn you on the news and shit that man o' wars are going to be coming in to certain beaches during certain periods. I grew up around the ocean, so I could never give up interacting with it because of one of it's native creatures.

what kind of jellyfish are those?
I've swum in water so thick with jellyfish i could hardly see...but those were the harmless ones and it was fun. I just assumed they were harmless though.

As for stings, once when I was like 12 I was snorkeling around a floating little dock thingy near the beach. It had a lot of algae on it so there were a lot of fish there. I wanted to swim through the fish, so I swum under the dock. Since I'm retarded, I didn't realize the underside of the dock was covered in sea anemones, which I floated up into since I'm a lousy swimmer. It just tingled at first, but later I got a huge rash on my whole back. Aaand another time I sat on a bee, lolz.

I've been stung by bees, bitten by ants, bitten by harmless spiders (none of the fun poisonous ones), horseflies bite the shit out of me, and recently I was bitten by a tick and contracted Lyme Disease. I have pictures of the rash but haven't uploaded them yet. The symptoms I came down with were horrible. Symptoms that mimicked meningitis for about a day and a half, then nausea, then moderate headaches for about a week, the rash itself was terribly itchy because I was allergic, and I was feverish on top of all of it due to having an infection at the site of the bite. I would have rather dislocated my knee again than to deal with that garbage.

I think pretty much everyone on the entire planet has at some point.

As for me, the last time I got a nasty bit was about a year ago. I was taking some old pieces of wood into our sandbox (which hadn't been used for years), when I started to feel a painful sting on my back.

I never saw anything, but I ended up with two welts on my back.

Caterpillars can sting, my mother's ornamental plum has some weird ass barney-wannabes that nail me from time to time. It's where our rain barrel is. They look like dead, curled up plum leaves. Not as bad as a bee, but enough to get a start and some cussing out of you. I feed them to my chickens.
I've avoided bee stings for years now. But I think this year they're trying to make up for it. Few weeks again I was riding on the back of a motorcycle. Damned bee/wasp hit into my arm. It stung me. What specie I could not tell you, the only thing left of the little bastard was his stinger and a little bit of his ass. Talk about burning pain. An hour drive with no stops, trying to beat a nasty storm so we couldn't stop. We got caught in the storm anyways.
Two days ago I was stung by what I thought was a normal honey bee. Now I'm not so sure. Got into my shoe via one of the holes in my croc shoes. I had to dig the stinger tip out via a needle. Was fine the first day, second day my foot was swollen, today it actually split open.
I've never had a reaction to normal bees like that before, so I'm wondering who nailed me.

>>275939

When I was a toddler I picked up a dead honey bee and it stung me. I don't remember it at all.

When I was about six my pet rat bit me after I'd been teasing him. I think that the blood startled me more than the actual pain.

When I was about 7 or 8 I stepped on a yellow jacket, that hurt like hell and I cried. It was fine the next morning though it hurt to stand on the foot that was stung (got me in my big toe).

Years later when I was in my teens a friend and I were running through this big field behind a friend's house (out in the country) and a bumble bee took exception to me. He chased after me and stung me right on my spine, it burned slightly but didn't hurt at all.

My cats chewed on me all the time but never drew any blood and I've never been bitten by anything else.

I stepped on a bee as a little kid (like <6) and freaked the fuck out. All I remember is "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGHHHHHHH"
Then hobbling back in the house and propping my foot up for a while with all sorts of creams on it.

Then theres the fire ants. A few got on my arm (i was a curious kid) and went to fuckin town.

Then theres the (literally) thousands of cat bites and scratches I've had, and the time my dog 'accidentally' gored my foot open, but those don't count.

I am immortal against bees and yellow jackets.
I've been stung by them so many times I think I built up a ridiculous immunity to them.
I stepped on one at least everyday because I never wore shoes in my backyard. They always got me when they floated in the pool, and the worst attack I got by yellow jackets was when my horse stepped into a damned nest.
I jumped off in time before she went berserk and bucked and kicked. Poor thing got stung as much as I did :(
Well over 30 stings for the both of us.
And to this day, I believe I will gain super-human abilities whenever a bee stings me

I actually got stung by a honey bee last Friday. Got me on the first joint of my pinky. The sting just felt like a splinter, but it was the later swelling that got me. Wasn't painful, but it itched TERRIBLY. I also had a hard time writing with it being swelled so much.

When I was four or five I was sitting in the grass taking off some roller skates and rested my bare ankle on the ground, right on top of a bumblebee. I screamed and cried bloody murder if memory serves me right.

While at the beach I got stung by a small (probably dead) jellyfish. Burned more than it should have.

And once when my family and some family friends went camping, we discovered too late that the horseflies were VERY attracted to the lake water. After swimming in the lake and letting the lake water air dry on us, we became a feast for horseflies. There were two labs there that loved the water and the poor things were screaming in pain from the swarm of horseflies that feasted on them.

We left that campsite early.

I'm told that when I was a baby and my crib was outside, the yellowjackets would attack me. I think my parents didn't like me...

There was the time I got stung 10 times in the back of the neck by a yellowjacket because I stood under the drainpipe, and they had build a nest in it that was hidden from view.

The best one is we have this big metal duck on a spring in the yard, like from a playground. The wasps love to build nests inside of it, so it's a cute toddler toy of doom.

Stepped on a bumble bee once, was annoying more than anything because I like those little guys, and when I was little I went to play on my swing set and put my palm down on a bee. Oh, I almost forgot. We went to the Bahamas once, Pelican Point. I don't know what they were called, but there were these bastard flies from hell. When I was six, my brother and I were waiting for my parents outside of Shoney's. I was messing with him and was really hyper and then all of a sudden, this fucking wasp landed on my arm and stung me. I still remember watching as the stinger pierce my skin. Geh >.< I cried the entire ride home. I still flinch when seeing a flying bug near me, whether or not it stings.

Got stung by a jellyfish when I was 11. I remember swimming around in mostly shallow water, a wave hits me and I just feel something wrap around me and suddenly I felt like I was electrocuted. I never saw it but I kicked it off me and left the water as fast as I could. Whatever it was had really long tentacles or something, there were lines around my arms, my legs and a little on my waist. Godawful pain, I haven't been swimming since. That's pretty much it, lucky me.

Now watch tomorrow as I get attacked by random stingy/biting bug. -_-

I work at the largest reef and saltwater fish store for about 350 miles in any direction.

A regular day involves maving my hands in the same tank as triggers bigger than your cat, lions the size of basketballs, 6 different kinds of rabbit fish, the occasional scorpionfish, stonefish, and fang blenny, plus several thousands of gallons of corals and liverock with all associated creatures.
Every week I see a new and different kind of anon's favorite creature, nudibranchs (most of which I promptly kill).
This thread reminded me about some other encounters.
Long spine sea urchins sting me about once a week, either not paying attention cleaning the tanks, crabbing coral etc...or prying one off a rock and getting it in a bag to sell. Pricks don't hurt so much as annoy the hell out of you...kinda itchy/stingy, and they stick it in and break it off, sometimes it's hard to get the spines out..and they always leave a purple tattoo for a few hours/days. They are amazingly easy to prick yourself with, they sense you and start waving the spines around, and ANY pressure drives them home.

Also Fire Coral, millepora, we don't order them cuase they are not very pretty usually. Why have a Millepora, when you can have an Acropora millepora? I know, right? But they will come in assorted boxes sometimes. I've grabbed them, grazed them etc... and never experienced anything.
Same with most anemones...Most you can never feel. Some of the carpets though CAN stick to your skin with their nematocysts, but there is no pain. Though I have seen a person that looked like their arms got 3rd degree burned from a reaction after letting a moster carpet stick to their arm.

Also pistol shrimp, I play with them all the time, most are too small to hurt you, though it feels funny when a large one snaps in your hand, small ones you can't feel. We mostly deal with the Randalls and Tiger pistols since thats what most shrimp gobies pair with.
>> Anonymous
Mantis Shrimp, we actually have an 8 inch peacock mantis in the store..he's $45. Beautiful and very smart creature, like a puppy in a 20g tank. We feed him by hand, but he gets a shit ton of respect. We get in small assorted mantis shrimp in all the time, 1-3 inches long, we handle them without fear, feels like getting popped with a rubber band.
We keep the little ones in a 20g together...it's like a war zone when we get in new live rock. We feel bad killing them, ut our customers don't want them in the LR so we put them in a tank to ignore.

Though these are all smashers, spearers are amazingly rare...out of HUNDREDS of smashers I've only seen two spearers. One got dumped in a trigger tank before we knew what he was...he sunk his claws into the face of a 10" picasso, which just made it easier for him to get eaten. We also ordered in a 14" Zebra Mantis, they are spearers, and we feared him...google these fuckers, watch them on youtube...fuck fuck fuck. We sold him for $45. He now lives in a 40g all alone and his owner says "it's the coolest, smartest pet I've ever had."

We have a 2 foot yellow headed moray too, he's god awful mean, he's sunk his centimeter long spears into everyone but me so my day is coming.

I have been bitten by a snowflake eel though...they are smaller usually, and more invert eaters so their teeth don't hurt as much. He crawled out on the concrete floor, and if you've tried you know that you can't pick an eel up off a smooth floor, so I let him latch on so I could get him back in the tank.

Most knowledgable salwater/reef related posts here are mine, I mean anons.

I've been stung/bitten by a fair amount of critters. I don't work in field that would put me in the risk of these, I'm just fucking unlucky as hell.

Been stung by both the Southern devil (Vejovis carolinianus) and striped (Centruroides vittatus) scorpions. The Devil felt alot like a honey bee sting, but the stripped scorpion, oh boy, that one hurt like hell. Then again, I was 9 when that one got me.

I also got some gnarly stings from a unknown type of Jelly Fish around Jekyll Island, GA. Tentacles wrapped around my calf, ankle and foot. Couldn't walk for two days due to my family not knowing how to deal with the stings (didn't go to hospital either)

Horse Fly: One of the more painful stings/bites i've had.

Wasp: Painful, but not too bad

Yellow jacket: like the wasp, really

Honey bee: To be honest, I didn't feel it, only observed the big painful bump later that day, and extracted the stinger.

It was only when I moved out west did I get stung/bitten by more potentially lethal critters.

Black Widow: Arm swelled up, bite location oozed and later became dark (not necrotic though), stayed in the hospital for about 6 hours under observation due to possible allergic reaction.

Bark Scorpion
Fucking OUCH. Minor Swelling and redness at the contact site ( right foot). Pain (burning, 8-9 on a scale ) increasing to include the entire foot to the ankle, which stopped at around 30 minutes. The pain continued in the same general intensity for about 5 hours, after which it was almost completely gone in 30 minutes. Threw up once during the 5 hour period, and was nauseous for a day after the sting. Was in the hospital for 12 hours. I don't think I received antivenin during this time.

Southern Pacific Rattle snake:
By far, the worst experience of my life. The snake was in my backyard and looked as if was going to bite my cat, and as I went to grab her, the snake struck my arm. I calmly walked away, called the ambulance.

By time the ambulance got there, I was already on the verge of unconsciousness. The contact area was drastically swollen, with blood seeping out of the two fang marks, my blood pressure had shot up to 180 over 95, and severe nausea had started to set in. I was unconscious by time I got to the hospital, where antivenin was injected. I was released within 4 days. No long lasting scars or effects from the bite

I got stung by what we think was a baby sting ray in my foot. HOLY FUCK SHIT HURT, FOR HOURS. I took a Benedryl and put my foot in hot water, and was fine next morning.

Not too epic. :S

I've been stung by bluebottles, aka Portuguese Man O' War, which apparently aren't jellyfish but whatever, everyone calls them that, so yeah, jellyfish.

Multiple occasions, stung a lot, welts, etc etc etc.

One time a torn off tentacle-thing was stuck to my thigh and I flicked it off with a stick but it rolled down my leg leaving a trail of welts.

And, well, who hasn't been stung by bees?

i got stung when black jellyfish really swarmed a couple years ago, so i jammed one of those fuckers with a long piece of bamboo and flung it on a rock, watched it dry out in the sun. good times

Bitten by a bat which flew in my bedroom while I was asleep. Had to get rabies vaccination, which was quite a painful experience for my 10 year old self.

Also stung by numerous bees, wasps, and I swear a dragonfly bit me once.

I don't know what the hell bit me, but we were camping in at Bear Lake in California and I woke up one morning with a bite that looked like a normal little spider/mosquito bite. Not itchy, not all that painful. I ignored it. A couple of days later, the skin for about a centimeter around it died and came off (still no muscle damage, just mild pain/irritation on contact). The dead area got larger over the next two weeks until it got about silver dollar size. I was fairly creeped out, so I asked my dad (doctor in the family ftw) and he had never seen anything like it, but said it wasn't a big deal if it didn't hurt much and I felt fine. Long story short, it stopped growing and healed. Frankly, I'm disappointed I don't have a badass scar from it. Still have no idea what the hell bit me. Did lots of research on the intarwebs and never found any symptom description like mine. Anyone have a similar story?

Valid brown recluse bite?

They're not native in California, but they've been seen around lately.

what you described was a necrotoxin. Most likely from the result of a brown recluse or another species of spider with a similar toxin

Recluse guy here. Yeah, that was what I figured, but it wasn't as bad as you usually hear about from recluse bites. Maybe it was a small one.

Well, what you normally hear is generally always the worst case scenario. Most people end up with just the pimple with some burning for a couple of days, and if there is any necrosis of the flesh whatsoever, it is very minor.

However, in the rare instance, the necrosis could expand, therefore resulting in the horrendous wounds that you see in pictures, etc.

I got stung once by something on the beach. I was just walking in the shallow water and I felt a sudden pain in my foot, as if I'd stepped on a jagged rock, except there was nothing there, and it kept hurting like hell and swelling, until it became clear that it was a sting of some sort. I limped for a few days.

The people at the beach said it could have been some animal that hid under the sand. A friend of mine also got stung in the foot that day, but it wasn't as bad.

What could it have been? This was at a beach near Pisa, Italy, if that helps.

Not a bite, but a lucky story.

I live in Arizona and we have about two acres. When I was nine this was an excellent adventure place. Long story short I ran into two brown recluse spiders and smashed the fuck outta both of them with a shovel.

I stepped on a paloverde needle, which are about 2.5 inches long. Lemme tell you, it fucking hurt really bad. I didn't goto the hospital but there was an intense burning in my foot so bad to where I almost couldn't walk. Was this just the deep puncture in my foot or does this tree have poison? I know puncture wounds are some of the most painful.

Most of my bite stories occurred when I was between the ages of 3-7.

I can't remember when this one happened, but I was pretty young. I used to go to my grandparents house a lot when I was little and play on their swing-set+slide they bought for me :3. One day, I thought it was a good idea to walk up the slide stomping as I went. Long story short, a giant fucking wasp flies and and stings me on my shoulder. I cried like a bitch for hours.

Radioactive spider. Now how do I shoot web?

depends on where you were really, if southern Europe / northern Africa it was probably a weever.

they hide in the sand and sting w/e steps on them.

I have NEVER been stung by a bee, wasp, or hornet, but I have been bitten by a spider. One fell into my boat at camp and left a small, scaly, circular scab. But I didn't feel the bite at all (or remember it biting me), and it healed up without issue. I also scrapped myself on some coral while snorkeling (luckily not mustard or fire coral).

I'm extremely cautious around flying stinging insects (because I'm deathly afraid of them, mostly).

I've been pinched by a crab and a small squid was biting the tip of my finger with it's beak. Damn that thing was hard to get off.
