Okay are Akitas difficult dogs to keep as pets? Do they require lots of exercise like a Pit or Rottie?

Yes and yes.
What did you think, a big dog like that only needs a granny-trot to the mailbox?
And the difficult pet part is about them being strong-willed and stubborn. That equals difficult to the Average Joe pet owner.

I had a huge fight with one of these fuckers, to stop it killing my friend's dog.

akitas are very dominant dogs. ESPECIALLY IF THEY AREN'T FIXED! Be very careful with these guys as they are very attitud-ish. Of course it all depends on the upbrining and who raised them and if they are properly trained right - I'm just saying that the general breed tends to be very self-assured.

Yes, in the end, and my friend's dog survived, but I got fairly badly bitten and really had to knock the hell out of the Akita before it gave up.

Well, look at mister high and mighty. What exavtly was I wrong about>>178619?
Especially the question about exercise was particulalry stupid from OP. Of fucking COURSE it needs lots of exercise! And the average dog owner isn't a very skilled dog trainer, and I'm talking statistically. There's a whole bunch of middle-aged women with Pomeranians named Mister Muggles funking up the numbers. Akitas usually need an experienced dog owner and most folk don't have the time, mentality or the know-how to properly keep them in line. Simple schedule issues alone might make things more difficult.
So step down from your pedestal, you weren't more than a Captain Obvious yourself.
