Dear /an/,

Recently my boyfriend and I adopted a stray we found living on the street. He is a young cat, probably less than 6 months old, and is an adorable striped ginger. When we brought him home he was filthy, underweight, and covered in hundreds of flees. He was so weak for those first few days that he couldn't even jump up into the window sill by himself.

Now he seems to have developed some sort of skin condition. All over his body he has these thick, white almost yellowish scabby patches that look like loose dandruff. When you pull them back he had little rounded sores under them, and we aren't sure exactly what they are. He has ZERO flees now, as we treated him with front line, but we are afraid he may be having an allergic reaction to it, or the soap we used to bathe him...Or it might be some parasite.

We will take him to the vet asap (on Monday if we can't find a vet to see him over the weekend) but I really want to know what these things are!
We have 3 other cats, and I really don't want them to get infected if this is some sort of skin parasite. Can anyone make any suggestions of what this might be, or what we can do to ease his discomfort till we can get him to the vet?

Oh I forgot, he also has black gunk around his nose that we have been cleaning off everyday. I think his nose might be bleeding :(

Well separate your cats from this one until you find out what it is. Also it sounds like he is illergice to something. Try giving him another bath with just water and calm the skin down. I bet it burns and is itchy. But until then keep the cat sepret from the others. (It sounds like Eggs-sama (Don't know how to spell it) but animals can also get it.

It could be mange.

Hope you are keeping him away from your other cats.

Eggs-sama?

Unless the "black gunk" completely fills up his nose and the area around it, it's just normal cat boogers. Some cats just have a dirty nose, so to speak. Clean it away and ignore it unless it suddenly changes consistency or, as I said, covers a lot more of his face.

The skin issue does sound like some kind of allergy or a skin infection. Are these "scabby patches" in large round formations? Is the hair still growing properly and not falling out? If the answer to those two is yes, he may have ringworm (though I don't recall it forming yellow scabs), in which case you are at risk for catching it, as well as your other cats. I would suggest bringing him to the vet asap, regardless.

To ease his 'suffering' in the mean time, STOP PICKING AT IT. If it is an infection, it will only get worse! Give him a warm water bath if he will tolerate it, letting him soak as long as he will allow.

It honestly sounds like "cradle cap", like human children get, which is essentially a fungal infection. Treatment is antifungals and proper skin care.

Well he usually hangs out with us during the day, and the other cats have been keeping their distance from the invader. Should we just keep him in the same room with us, or should we actually isolate him (private food bowl and liter box)?

@Steff-chan: I tried giving him just a bath with water, thinking his skin was irritated from the soap we had used, but it hasn't seemed to have stopped it from getting worse. I just hope it made him feel a bit better =/

The patches are in dime sized, roundish spots, and he doesn't seem to be losing any hair. It seems to kind of be forming around the hair shafts. In other places like his ears, he just has dry scaly patches of skin that do kind of look like cradles cap. They aren't really yellow, just slightly yellowish..Almost cream colored.

isolate him. It sounds to me like he had an allergic reaction to the chemicals in either the flea meds or the soap, and he's gotten a skin infection. I forget what it's called. Your other cats won't catch it, but I am going to bet that stay also has worms, which all your cats can catch, and is a bitch to get rid of when they all get it. Also, have him tested for Fel-V, that can kill all your cats also.

Was it also ticks and fleas because if it is that might had trancfured limes deasise and you can't do anything about it.

No ticks thankfully, just the flees. Maybe ear mites.

It is most likely miliary dermatitis or Ringworm.Even ONE flea bite could cause it in an allergic kitty..You can apply a bit of neosporen .a few times a day for that Ringworm can be recurrent and is treated with a topical fungicide or a vaccine shot.He may have picked it up at the vets.

miliary dermatitis can come from a food allergy or the bite of even ONE flea. This is treated with one cortesone shot or neosporen it is safe it he licks a bit.
