great breed or greatest breed?

unfortunately the apartment I'm moving in doesn't let people keep german sheppards, or any "aggressive" breed. what kind of substitute does /an/ recommend? no toy dogs/useless dogs, please.
>> Anonymous
Great Danes. They are only dangerous if you have osteoporosis and can't bear the weight of a 130 lb. animal who refuses to accept that they have outgrown sitting on peoples' laps.

Good suggestion. Will they mind being indoors for most of the day? My place is only 900 sq feet.
>> Anonymous
>>122416
expect them to chew through the wall and expand your apartment to 1800 sq ft
>> Anonymous
they don't liek me, i'm not white!

>>122419
is anon serious? I can't afford a destructive pet.
>> Anonymous
>>122424
then don't get a dog
>> Anonymous
>>122427
why not? what pet does anon offer?
>> Anonymous
>>122419
Eh, despite their size, I was under the impression that Great Dane's weren't too bad for big apartment dogs. They tend to sleep about as much as cats.

well, 4chan's pet store has an abundance of "wonder snakes" for your petting needs. They can actually increase in size right before your eyes as if by magic! They're quite hardy too. They can withstand accidental, incidental, and deliberate handling. In fact, the majority actually prefer such interaction.

>>122431
they're not very abundant, and expensive too. I'll check with my pet stores, but does anon recommend any other breeds that would suffice as guard dogs and also friendly companions?

Awful dog, I got bit by one yesterday at work, bruised the bone in my hand , fucking dog gave me no warning

the sheppard? great danes do look pretty fucking dumb.

cat if you just want company.

i think rats are awesome pets.
they are extremely smart, can be litter trained, walk tight ropes, ride on your shoulder, go for walks on leashes, go through obstacles, help you run wires through the walls, curl up on your lap while you watch TV, and are very playful. one of my rats even plays fletch.
other that i decent size cage they are cheap pets to have(not including vet bills) and easy to take care of.

parrots are also awesome but they tend to be very noisy.

Don't get a parrot, they shit everywhere. everytime I took him out to sit on my shoulder while I watched TV, I would be covered in parrot shit.

German Shepherds can be the nicest and most protective dogs to own if you're kind to them.

Agreed. Mine wasn't very aggressive at all. It's really too bad the OP's landlord won't allow them.
>> Anonymous
a weimaraner or a boxer would be a good alternative
>> Anonymous
Boxers are outlawed too.

getting a weimaraner is like gluing one to your ass. they are complete attention whores and won't even go outside to take a crap unless you are there hovering over it. they also get pretty big.

Get a terrier of some sort. Scottish or Welsh are generally better than jack russel. They are generally very energetic (read: agressive), but probably not on the 'agressive dogs' list. When the landlord complains tell him you wanted to bring your big docile fat lazy german shepard (even if it is not big, fat, or lazy), but noooo...

Don't buy from pet stores. Find a breeder or a rescue dog.

Aim for a Basenji. I have a Basenji/Shepard mix. She's wonderful

Get a rescue dog from your local animal shelter and save a life! You could find a real treasure too; those abandoned dogs will love their new owner forever.

Plus, german sheppards have their health problems, mainly with their back right?

Arthritis?

Usually it's hip dysplasia. It's the most common in American standard GSDs, where they are bred to have beautiful but unhealthy sloping hips (see pic). GSDs bred to conform to European standards, which are the type you find in law enforcement, have normal hips and are less prone to ddeveloping dysplasia.

How dangerous is this for the dog? What are the health side-effects of having hip dysplasia, aside from the obvious visual one.

Inbreeding mostly.

Get a sighthound (whippet, greyhound, etc but NOT an afghan, they're assholes) if you want a quiet dog just for companionship. They do need some exercise every now and then (take it to a park and let it run freely for a bit) but they tend to sleep the clock around at home and are very loyal and loving dogs.

Lab/Golden retrivers are best if you want a loyal dog that basically lives its life to please you.

Finnish Spitz maybe?

lol no.

Too small. I want an intimidating canine.

Get an akita and train it well. Best. Dog. Ever.
>> Anonymous
>>122407
I've never heard of an agressive german shepherd, except for those trained as police dogs. oo
>> Anonymous
The greatness of a dog is measured by how well it can rip a childs face off so sheppards are up there but not the greatest.
>> Anonymous
Mastiff, Great Dane, Irish Wolfhound intimidate the hell out of people. Bonus, Mastiffs and Great Danes have wonderful personalities and are usually very friendly, while Wolfhounds are insanely loyal but quite suspicious of strangers.

But if you're only getting a dog to intimidate, really, just buy a fuckoff huge handgun.

I want to get a German shepard or a husky but I live in an apartment and can't really have anything that will bite wires
>> Anonymous
>>122554
I have a weim and this is true. still love it though :D
>> Anonymous
>>122717
Are they really as quiet as I've understood them to be? 'Cos that would be a definite bonus.
Funny, I spend a bit too much time pondering what kind of mix of breeds would be best for me. ...And I know it likely wouldn't go as I think it would, especially concerning personalities...
>> Anonymous
talk with the apartments and tell them to get their reference on "aggressive breeds" checked.

is it bad to keep a husky in a floridian climate?
>> Anonymous
>>123230

Yes, if you really like your pet. Huskies are for really cold places; florida is all hot and humid, it's really bad for them.

On another note, yes, people shouldn't have neither German Sheppards or Huskies if they live in apartments. These are dog breeds that need daily exercise and prefer large outdoor spaces. They'd go crazy in a cramped place like an apartment.

Op here. Good news, I convinced my landlord to let me have a German Sheppard. Now I just have to find somewhere to get one.

Get a Caucasian Ovcharka, lol
