Hi. I have a problem with a carolina sphinx moth.
somewhere 4-8 PM yesterday it came out of it's pupa.
I saw the moth at 8 PM that day. I turned the light on and got it a stick to climb up. I left the light on until the next morning. I turned the light off then and went to school. I come back, let it sit outside for a few hours.
It's a little cold out
after few hours, I check on it. The wings are still folded and it's shivering or trying to fly. I think it ws trying to fly since it was running around ll over the place.
But when I brought it back in, it stopped.
So, did the wings just completely fail to develop properly?
Pic related, it's a carolina sphinx moth.

It's an insect. It only has a rudimentary ganglion in place of a brain. It's not in any "misery."

take a picture of it, I cant tell from your description. Sphinx moths flutter their wings when its cold, insects require their thorax to be a certain temperature before they can fly. It's probably fine, does it look like the moth in the picture, or one with shriveled wings? If the wings look fine, and its been 12 hours after it hatched, it is probably fine.

I thought butterflies shook their wings to dry them after emerging from the cocoon...

I think they take a while before they can take off...
