Pit bull. Happy, affectionate, depending on their demeanor they can be lazy or really need to be exercised every day. They have short hair but can get sunburned.

DEFINITELY second this. I had two pit bulls and if you raise them right, and train them properly they're THE most affectionate dogs, in my opinion. Big, lazy babies, ready to lay around with you until you're ready to play with them. I'm sure they can withstand the heat because they have very high endurance, but I live in a place where the temperatures rarely get above the high 80s. They're very good inside/outside dogs but I wouldn't suggest tying them up for long periods of time, because that makes them want to go after everything they can and after being tied up for a while, they'll want to get away as fast as they can and will try. Keeping it outside would be fine if you've got a really big yard or place to keep it, and plan on spending lots of time with it so that it isn't alone for too long, because mine were prone to fence climbing when they got bored, then they turned into (great) house dogs. :) Good luck though, hope you find a breed that you like.

short-hair breeds are a generally good idea. Great Danes are actually very sweet and don't need that much excersize, same with Mastiffs (though they drool a lot).

If the big dogs aren't your thing, I recommend a pug. I defy anyone to find a more retard-happy dog when you come home than a pug. And even though smaller dogs generally need more exercise, pugs are small enough that they can get the exercise they need from a much smaller area, even if you have a decent sized apartment they're good.
Although pugs shed the fuck everywhere.
