Hun, I really think your cat understood and truly believed you. having lived on a farm all my life I've seen alot of animals pass on, and they seem more able to understand and accept death than we do.
We had a Clydesdale mare suffer from colic and a twisted gut, the vet came to put her down after hours of agony due to my stupid uncle's indecision. Even though she was in an immense amount of pain and could barely walk she allowed us to lead her out back the barn, before she collapsed down dead she let out a loud, eerie whinny to the rest of the horses in the barn. Her oddly serene nature and the last call to her herd made me a real believer.
You did the right thing, don't second guess yourself about it now.
