Laws kind of stop you from bringing home any old fish.
Not to mention you can't really control what bites your bite. You can't see a bluegill nibbling your bait and say "Oi! Mate! That's for the bass! Get off it!"
There's also the fact that most of the fun of it is in the fight. I put the fish back (if I'm not fishing with my relatives in Florida; they know how to clean and cook fish....You ever had fresh caught flounder and red? Orgasmic, I swear, especially knowing you caught it.) because it's a waste to kill them, as where I fish freshwater it's (small) bluegill and big mouth bass (generally young), and if I put them back they have a chance to get bigger, and a little wiser, and maybe I'll meet them or their spawn again and they'll be more of a challenge.
