The fact that they can't fly, smell, or bite makes them very good pets, especially for young children. I know that if I had kids, I'd rather get them hissers than hermit crabs. Hermit crabs smell, pinch, and they just plain don't do very well in captivity. I used to have them all the time as a kid, I would get pinched by them, you could smell them across the room, and they'd die after about nine months. So as pets hissers>hermit crabs, IMHO.
