Meet Biscuit :3 I just picked him up. Are alfalfa pellets the way to go? The lady said they were best because they don't smell as bad as sand.

I like sand, just because it's more natural for them.

Meet L, she decided to sleep in her food dish.
>> Anonymous
Only problem with sand is when they eat crickets they usually eat sand to, which is not good for them.

Yeah, more "natural" or not (lol living in a glass box), impaction is a major threat for captive herps.

Your beardy is very cute!

However, it is recommended by vets that the best substrate for a bearded dragon is actually newspaper, paper towels, and other sorts of paper. Potentially nasty bacteria thrive in alfalfa meal if it gets wet, and sand is no better because if a beardy eats sand along with his food he can get impaction and die. This is especially true if the beardy is young.

They should also sell some sort of carpet-like stuff you can use

Pictured beardie is SO not happy.

You can buy newspaper paper, usually sold in the art section. It is inkless.

OH that stuff. But do I shred it or fold it?
>> Anonymous
>>287288
You could fold it a few times and just lay it flat on the bottom of the cage. It doesn't look as nice as sand or some other sort of substrate, but it's much safer.

i've got my beardie on tiles, like what you'd have in bathroom/kitchen, works really well, very easy to clean (just wipe it off) and for him to walk on, it may not be the most natural substrate, but all beardies you get now are captive bred anyway, so they probably don't know any better or don't care anyway any kind of particle substrate wether its sand or vermiculite or tree bark or anything gets infected with bacteria really easily and can be eaten when the beardie eats its bugs

I've fed him about 8 or 9 mealworms today and about 6 or 7 large crickets already. The petstore lady said 5 of each a day, but he seems really hungry :< I don't want to starve him, so what do you guys think? He's still a baby so I'm not sure. Also he won't touch his vegetables, but I read that as they become adults they'll eat those more
>> Anonymous
I'd cut back on the mealworms and give him as many crickets as he'll eat. At that age you don't really need to worry about obesity.

Okay, thanks. Also, he's been running against the glass sides of the cage like he's trying to push his way though. I'm worried he'll hurt himself. Is this normal?

>>287580
There's even a cricket in there now, but he's just interested in trying to get out of his cage. I'm worried :{
>> Anonymous
thats his exercise considering he may not have enough room to run around. let him roam around out of tank. feed him as much as he will eat cause beardies will stop eating once they are full and you shouldn't have to worry about obesity if they get adequate exercise.
>> Anonymous
btw petstore people more often then not don't know what the hell they are talking about
>> Anonymous

well the lady I got him from says she has one too. He stopped doing it sometime and slept on his house. I Figure he has moving stress though anyway
>> Anonymous
yeah maybe but from what ive experienced they're less likely to run around and/or explore if its moving stress.

what about repti-carpet? i heard this was good for young beardies
>> new owner
Now he won't eat crickets at all :[ I'm going to go talk to the pet lady tomorrow. He ate a ton the other day.

How recently? Remember, this is a reptile. It doesn't need to eat constantly to power its metabolism.

Yeah, I forgot about that. He ate some the day before yesterday. Yesterday he ate about 3 mealworms and a cricket (I think, I dont see it in the cage anymore, but he didnt eat it in front of me). I know snakes only eat like, once a week, but I was under the impression he'd eat daily
