Christianity has been adopting local pagan customs since the beginning. Christmas was originally Saturnalia, worship of the Sun god, reborn on the solstice. At the beginning, Christianity had to compete with a few dozen other religions. Christianity won by *adopting local customs, *not requiring money up front like the others did, *making the rules clear enough for any simpleton [The Ten Commandments], and *some really hardworking traveling preachers.
