Man is so good at causing whole species to become extinct and yet why do we have problems with invasive species such as wild cats in Australia and wild pigs New Zealand? Why is it so difficult for us to completely wipe out their populations?
>> Anonymous
invasive species are better suited to adapt to a variety of different environments and food sources while endangered animals generally tend to be less adaptable or have very specific environments or food sources.

going to chime with this guy, survival of the fittest, some animals just fail at existing.
>> Anonymous
Man, I love how proud that guy looks after nailing a stray cat with a hunting rifle and $500 scope. Not saying it's wrong, but it's like the kid with the shotgun vs the squirrel.
>> Anonymous
We need to infect some of them feral cats with cat AIDS and send them back in the wild. That should do it.

>>187481
Biological agents have the problem that they might jump the species border and affect the native wildlive. The risk is minicule but nobody wants to take a chance and risk his career.
I also think that those cat populations have every possible illness.
They tried that before with rabbits by infecting them with myxomatosis. Effect was that they now have rabbits that are relatively immune to myxomatosis.

If that is a feral Australian or NZ cat, there's nothing poor about it. They ought to be eradicated. And this is coming from a cat lover.

Quite simply, because most australians are ignorant assholes and call any species they don't like 'feral.'

Ah, the sweet irony. Maybe you should do some research before you open your mouth hmm?

This is clearly coming from someone who doesn't hunt, and probably has never shot a rifle (or shotgun) before. Yeah, the big bad human with the high-tech weapons--let me tell you something. Sure, if you actually hit the cat in the right spot with the rifle (or the squirrel with the shotgun), you're going to kill it--no doubt about that. But despite what hollwood movies you've seen, actually hitting them is a different story altogether.

First off, that looks like a Burris scope, which are cheap junk. I doubt he paid $100 for that scope, let alone five hundred. Also note the cheap injection-molded plastic stock. That rifle is far from being a precision shooting tool.

But more importantly, truly feral cats are hard to shoot even with a sub-MOA rifle. They are extremely skittish--even the slightest noise will spook them. We had one mangey old tom at our farm that was constantly getting into the chicken coop. This cat was so wary of humans that if he so much as saw a human, even from 100+ yards, he'd take off like a bat out of hell. I set up at night about 40 yards out in an old hay shed, and the little bastard could hear me turning the safety off of the rifle, despite that distance. He did this three times, before on the 4th night I kept my rifle ready, loaded and with the safety OFF.

Invasive species are often incredibly destructive to native wildlife. Guam has lost 8 out of 10 native bird species to brown tree snakes, Australia has a serious issue with cane toads. There are islands with literally no sea birds due to ship-introduced rat infestations.

I am an animal lover, but I have no qualms about wiping out invasive species. The "Oh, it's a cute kitty, we can't kill it!" doesn't hold water when the things are eating the local wildlife out of existence. There are plenty of domesticated cats and dogs, we don't need to flood the world with their feral cousins.

To wipe out a small, prolific species like cats or cane toads, it's usually necessary to alter the environment in such a way that their lifestyle becomes impossible. Actually hunting something to death works better with larger game that reproduce less often.

I happen to agree. If animals can't keep up then they need to evolve into something better. They either need intelligence on par with us or they need to fulfill some role that is beneficial for us.

Big issue with trying to use biological means to kill any animal is that even if it seems effective at first, in the long run it'll pry be detrimental.

A good way of explaining this is how people have tried to wipe out bugs like misquitoes with pesticides. While at first it seemed to be highly effective, the misquitoes that did survive had a genetic anomoly that made them immune to these particular pesticides. The surviving immune misquitoes then reproduced. Making the whole process moot. It's your basic Darwin theory.

Yes, we must punish the animal because we as a species are morons.

It's called caging, and then spaying and neutering but since that isn't as fun as shotting at shit then along with more expensive,
of course it's the route most taken.

I hate what a fucking retarded creature we are.

Trapping, de-gendering, and releasing would be an effective method of eliminating feral foreign species. Unfortunatley it requires far too much labor (skilled) and cost, so it is rarely practiced. That would be the route to go if people were willing to pay for it. Aside from the cost, it is much more efficient than shooting them.

I was arguing evolution at all, just saying that some animals are better adapted than others to survive all kinds of conditions. Luckily we are here to spread them to all of these said locations. We also have feral cats and dogs in america, what's even more fun is in louisiana we have nutria(similar to beaver, but not) that we imported years ago to eat this plant that came here from peru and spread prolificly so we got nutria which eat it, and now we have too much of both and we kill them whenever we can just to solve out problems.

Watch for jogger warnings in eastern Washington.

Cougars can't be hunted with dogs, bears can't be trapped or poisoned, but there's a shitstorm when one gets into whitey's suburbia.

They then dart it and truck it out to rural areas so they're other people's problem.

>>188116

Not very effective.

Only some cats go for catnip. Also, cats generally don't eat it, which greatly limits the kinds of poison you could use. It would have to act by contact (difficult with a furry animal) or by inhalation. This is not only difficult to do (despite what you see on TV) but it also would be very dangerous to all the animals out there, not just the cats.

They made this sausage that only cats eat and will kill a cat instantly. However they only use it in one area in australia instead of the whole country. That would be the best solution however it isnt approved yet.

Wild pig meat is delicious, though.
I don't think that they're an invasive species at all.
>> Anonymous
Typically man introduced the invasive species and usually prefers the introduced over the native for reasons such as "it's prettier", "it reminds me of home", "we'll use it for agriculture instead of importing the materials", "We're lazy and can't clean our damn shipping crates and won't take responsibility for what we've done".

So, usually man just doesn't bother with attempting to erradicate invasive species. When man (the restorationist) does try, the environment usually has changed so much that it barely resembles the native species original habitat. This is because there are usually other factors that coincide with invasions such as changes in local atmospheric nitrogen (there's an ongoing study about this specifically I know about) and carbon dioxide, changes in the terrain, manipulations of fire frequency, logging of old growth forests, and many other manipulations by man.

If you randomly seeded some nonnative species onto some unspoiled field in the middle of nowhere, I doubt you'd see that species spring up and dominate. There's just too much competition already and that invasive probably won't find a niche.

You do the same thing in field that's been trampled on, has a freeway running by it spewwing all sorts of nitrogenic componds and phosphors, and has some invasive herbivore that feeds on the natives but not the invasives (because the natives didn't evolve adaptations for that specific herbivore), then the invasive plants easily have a fighting chance.
