Here's my pet axolotl. Not really that exotic, I guess, but I think she's fun.

Are those rolls in it's tank? What does that thing eat?

They're big rocks cleverly disguised as rolls. She eats earthworms and sometimes feeder fish as a treat. Sorry the outside of her tank is so smudged and dirty - it's right next to the kitchen sink and gets splashed all the time. In fact, you can see the knob of the sink behind her.

Another pic, this time from above. The white rectangle is the reflection of the flash on the water.

Seriously, where the hell can I get one of those? That's the coolest looking pet I have ever seen.

You could try looking around on the caudata.org forums to see if anyone near you is breeding their axolotl soon. I've also heard of people finding them at petstores, but those generally aren't very healthy since the workers at those places have no idea what to do with an aquatic salamander. I got mine from a biology lab - her experiment was over and she needed a home.

yeah, I have two axolotls.
simply awesome pets, and you should be able to find them at most pet stores.
just dont put any other fish in there with them, and only use gravel thats bigger then their head, or sand.

Can you hold them or take them out? Do they do anything neat?

How long do they live and how expensive are they?

*is a cheap bastard*
>> Anonymous
no, you can't take them out, it dried their skin and is all-round bad for them.

If looked after properly, they live for around 15 years.
They eat ANYTHING that moves, including you finger, so be careful, even though they cant bite.
they have a wide selection of food.
you can feed them raw non fatty meat, such as chicken and beef liver and beef heart.

or you could buy them axolotl pelets, or glass shrimp. they get bored of foods, so keep a variety!

oh, and about prices.
it depends, some pet stores sell them for 30 dollars, some for 10 dollars.
it really depends on the pet store.
and how young they are.

Well, she's been there for 1.5 years, and it hasn't affected her yet. Besides, my apartment is very small, and it's either there next to the sink or upstairs where the AC doesn't work so it's always 85 degrees. We do take special care not to get anything IN her tank, and I think she enjoys being in the center of all the action. She "follows" us around when we're cooking, and dishwashing time is her favorite time after feeding time.

If you really want one, I'd think long and hard before getting one from a petstore. I also post over on the caudata.org forums, and we get stories all the time about axolotls from petstores that are in such bad condition they can't be saved.

If they are properly taken care of, they can easily live more than 10 years. Mine is almost 4 years old now. You can't really take them out and play with them, as another poster said, it's very bad for their skin.

Some people will tell you it's much cooler to force them to metemorphose by giving them hormones, but this shortens their lifespan drastically. Besides, you could just get a tiger salamander, which is pretty much the same animal except for the fact that it metamorphoses into a terrestrial salamander naturally.

>>190011

thank you. On the bight side, after the initial purchase of one, they don't seem to be too expensive to upkeep.

Animal in OP's pic is a baby aye-aye. I don't think you can keep them as pets.

on wikipedia it says the axolotl are critically endangered, doesn't that make them illegal to keep as pets?
>> Anonymous
>>190277

They are critically endangered in the wild and their natural habitats. They've been used so much in labs though that they are actually rather popular in captivity and as pets.
