Hunting //White.Knight
Hi /an/! I'm doing a report for a wildlife class and I need to gather the opinions of at least 5 people.
I'd really appreciate your help. =)
So /an/, what are your views on hunting?

P.S. I'm not talking about poaching (illegal hunting). Strictly limit your views to hunting as a wildlife management practice.

Double bump.

Hunting seasons (and maybe more importantly hunter's money) are obviously critical to wildlife managment and you must either be a troll or be in a freshman level wildlife class at the worst community college in the world for your instructor (adjunct?) to think there is a discussion here or that this issue is up for debate.
The /an/ons here are smart enough to realize this, so while not all of us here hunt, we understand hunting's place in wildlife managment and conservation.

That said we dispise inhumane people and animal cruelty.
>> Anonymous
its necessary to control populations. for instance i'm going wild pig hunting this week on my land due to them being a pest and destroying everything they come in contact with.
>> Anonymous
>>330337
Adding on to that,
hunting is natural when it is not in excess or when it goes to waste, such as the poaching in Africa, or the fur farms of foxes/raccoons/other animals (I guess that's not really hunting, but whatever).

hey idiot, he's not asking if legal hunting is important or anything. he's asking for your opinion you elitist fag
>> Anonymous
I'm a veggiefag, so obviously I'm biased.

Hunting is retarded.
>> Anonymous
Ignoring that you probably won't get serious responses on 4chan I think you're supposed to ask people in person for something like this.
>> Anonymous
I'm not opposed to hunting, but I am opposed to the bullshit claim that without hunting all of nature would go topsy-turvy. Deer, rabbits, quail, etc. would be kept in check by their natural predators, except that their natural predators are culled because "HURRR, IF WE DON'T KILL CULL THE WOLVES/BEARS/FOXES/MOUNTAIN LIONS/RATTLERS etc. THEY'LL OVERPOPULATE AND EAT ALL OUR GAME AND OUR LIVESTOCK." So the whole predator/prey relationship is intentionally fucked with in order for white guys in camo gear with rifles to insert themselves as necessary predators in the natural order. Then you get lobbyists involved and wind-up with shit like in Alaska where the politicians want the wolves culled as heavily as possible because they claim they're damaging the caribou population, despite the fact that nearly all independent scientists who've looked into the matter have pointed-out that the population is fine and is dropping because they're basing their 'healthy population levels' on unsustainable overpopulation records.

Introduced species like wild boar are one thing, but the notion that humans are a huge, necessary part of the food chain wherever you have ungulates or other game populations is fucking retarded.

Hello OP, I think I stated my opinions rather well, and they are good opinions, based on the facts of the matter

>>limit your views to hunting as a wildlife management practice.
"Hunting...obviously critical to wildlife managment.."
"while not all of us here hunt, we understand hunting's [critical] place in wildlife managment and conservation."

I didn't have my style manual handy but I trust I made it easy enough for you.

I think it is obvious op is a troll or came here looking for "opinions" like "when bambi dies my kittah gets sad." But /an/ons know better than that, if that makes us "elitist" well then so be it. You were included in my generalisation about smart anons, but not anymore.

nb4 zippocat.jpg "how does this make you feel /an/?"

>>the whole predator/prey relationship is ---intentionally--- fucked with in order for white guys in camo gear with rifles to insert themselves as necessary predators in the natural order.

I think you overstepped there

>>without hunting all of nature would go topsy-turvy.

Deer are the only animals that have a population control emphasis on their hunting practices. I know that you know that many populations of deer across the country would stave themseleves in the winter, and that their suburban populations are rather high, and would not be controlled by natural predators.

The biggest reason for hunting "deer, rabbits, quail..." though is that it is a billion dollar industry that we have to thank for any shred of wetlands, refuges, WMAs, parks, or most large tracts of acreage that have a tree at least 50 years standing on it.

Hunting is pretty stupid-
Before humans evolved to use tools and having an ego, nature got on perfectly fine. The food chain was in perfect order- coyotes eat foxes eat mice eat grass produces energy- but then humans come into play a few hundred thousand years ago. We start off as hunter/gathers, which is fine for a while, because the hunter/gatherers were just hunting to survive. Then the idea of livestock starts, and humans began to think that they are better than animals so they can keep them cooped up in cages and eat them later. This eventually evolves into the idea that killing things that are lower on the social scale is moral (just like the Holocaust), and that is where we are now.
Hunting isn't a population cap- it's made by humans to satisfy human's desire to be better than something else.

so much fail, maybe my hopes for /an/ were a litle high, do we need to have an evolution thread after this one too?

IIT Thread: Lack of understanding re. basic biology, sociology, nature of all animal species including humans, the co-evolution and mutual exploitation of domestic animals and humans, and a generally brainless and two dimensional take on the human species. Go bush for a while, kiddo, also spend some time subsisting on a hunter gatherer diet away from all the components of settled civilisation. Then come back and repeat the same statement with a straight face.

you fucking idiot... do hunters today live out in the wild surviving off of animals they kill?
That's what we have supermarkets for.
I'm saying hunting is pointless- We do exploit domestic animals like cows and other livestock and we benefit from that, but hunting provides no beneficial purpose for us.

Uh, you can make useful stuff from it? Do you think Hunters just leave their kills to rot? Hell no, that 75 cent bullet just bought a whole lot of meat and hide, not to mention maybe a trophy.
>> Anonymous
>>330434
Sure, you can (and will) eat your kill, but we don't need to. It's not necessary.
And for the trophy, another example of the human ego.
>> Anonymous
>>330436
Food isn't needed by Humans I guess durr hurr. If you kill some big fucking boar that saves you a lot of damn money that would go towards buying meat in a grocery store.
>> Anonymous
>>330440
It's still not necessary, unless you didn't have any money.
In which case, you would not have a gun, and you would be using a homemade bow. Which I would approve of.
>> Anonymous
>>330444
So you approve of hunting if you're poor and do it with shitty gear that promotes failure and excessive pain for the animal?
>> Anonymous
No, I promote survival.
>> Anonymous
>>330455
And survival means food and shelter, guess which one hunting satisfies?
>> Anonymous
>>330473
guess which one the supermarket satisfies?
>> Anonymous
>>330479
So? You're gonna tell me meat got in the grocery store is somehow more acceptable then meat from hunting?
>> Anonymous
No, I'm saying meat from hunting in not necessary.
My whole fucking point is, you do not NEED to hunt. People hunt because they WANT to hunt. It is NOT a necessity, but people do it anyway just like they do any other fucking thing they want to.
I'm going to bed.

How strange. I always thought that when my uncles and father went after wild pigs, they were going after an invasive, highly dangerous, rapidly multiplying feral species that destroyed local habit, eliminated wildlife, demolished fences and flattened crops and was extremely smart to the point where it was avoiding many traps and many types of bait as well.

Thanks for the correction! I'll be sure to pass it on.
>> Anonymous
hunting of homo sapiens is ok with me... hunting of other species not so.
>> Anonymous
>>330522

listen asshole there is only one invasive, highly dangerous, rapidly multiplying species that's destroying billions and billions of acres of habitat and driving tens of thousands of species into extinction, and that's you and your ilk - humans. the damage done by wild boars is negligible - exactly zero - by comparison. so go fuck yourself and your self-righteous gun-toting NRA-member relatives

>>330575
Oh no, the poor likkle animals. Obviously they're breeding just fine, and with a lack of any natural predators...

Besides, pork is good. Hunting was a necessity. It isn't any longer. When the world goes Mad Max on us, the hunters will have the edge in food procurement.

Oh dear...education has failed again. Alas, alack. Do not despair, anon! You can make the first step in eliminating the human race and freeing the world from a species that is demonstrating the simple rule of basic ecology that if it has no predators, its population will spiral out of control and cause a massive depletion of resources and huge environmental damage! And the first step starts with a single individual. Here's a knife. The wrists are chancy, I suggest you try the femoral artery in your thigh.

hunting is currently not one of my past times, but if i were to hunt, i would probably use traps rather than knives, which really have not much use in hunting, except in the fantasies of socially inept adolescents.

Part 1
OP again. I didn't foresee this thread turning into a huge debate, but I suppose it's not unexpected. I finished my report thanks to some of the early posters, and to them I am quite grateful. I'm going to attempt to remain neutral here, but if you guys feel the need to perpetuate this debate I'd like to offer some facts that might commonly be overlooked:

“The sale of hunting licenses, tags, and stamps is the primary source of funding for most state wildlife conservation efforts.”

“$200 million in hunters' federal excise taxes are distributed to State agencies to support wildlife management programs, the purchase of lands open to hunters, and hunter education and safety classes. Proceeds from the Federal Duck Stamp, a required purchase for migratory waterfowl hunters, have purchased more than five million acres of habitat for the refuge system (2005 statistics only); lands that support waterfowl and many other wildlife species, and are usually open to hunting.”

-source: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service http://www.fws.gov/hunting/whatdo.html

Furthermore, you can take a hunters’ safety and education class for free to learn about the many regulations currently in place. http://www.hunter-ed.com/ Most, if not all, of these courses should be free to take online. There are many regulations in place that protect both game species and their habitat.

For those of you concerned about animal welfare, your concerns are valid. Here is food for thought: Is death by hunting more inhumane than other natural causes of death? Examples being death by natural predators such as wolves, crocodiles, lions, etc. I won’t go into this, but I trust you can sufficiently research this idea on your own.
>> //White.Knight
Part 2
More food for thought: If hunting was eliminated entirely, how else could humans manage explosive and potentially dangerous wildlife populations? Some argue birth control, but the cost and labor requirement of such a program would likely prevent it from ever being implemented. Should humans do nothing?

When examining any source of information, keep an eye out for false statements.
False statements include:

“The stress that hunted animals suffer—caused by fear and the inescapable loud noises and other commotion that hunters create—also severely compromises their normal eating habits, making it hard for them to store the fat and energy that they need in order to survive the winter.”

“Hunters, however, kill any animal whom they would like to hang over the fireplace”

“Most hunting occurs on private land, where laws that protect wildlife are often inapplicable or difficult to enforce.”

I lol’d at the above statement. Where are laws inapplicable??? You live where exactly?
“hunting has been an ineffective method to “control” populations”

-source: PETA

The list goes on and on. Anyway, I’m an in-betweener on the issue of hunting. I advocate it on some grounds, and not on others. I felt you guys should at least be exposed to some other ideas. A thorough understanding is the mark of a good judge.

PEACE.

I can see why some people would deem hunting barbaric, but to me, hunting is perfectly fine. Though I believe a hunter should use or sell the meat of the animals they kill. Hunting for sport only strokes the ego and is bullshit.

Now a days, hunting is indeed necessary. Take deer for example. In the mid west(where they grow all that granola shit you like to eat) Deer are a pest animal. Over the decades, they have lost their fear of man and will stroll into a back yard or a farm and start chowing down. Bucks are dangerous animals and could maim or kill a person when provoked. Feral pigs and boars were also mentioned. Very large, and very dangerous animals who'd kill and eat a human if given the chance. Face reality. You're not going to panic if a deer knocks over your trashcan, but you're going to get your shotgun or call 911 when a wolf or a bear does the same. Residential areas have expanded too far to allow natural predators to sustain meaningful populations(it's a shame)

TD;LR: Hunting is fine and in some cases necessary. As long as you're using the animal for a purpose and not hunting to increase your penis length, then go for it.
>> Anonymous
I'm just going to put this out there- before humans, there were no pests(save parasites). No crops to eat, no safety- only survival. Hunting was not a human invention, so you can say that humans are just acting natural when they go hunting, when it is done for a purpose. Sure, you can say that humans hunting animals benefits humans just as wolves hunting animals benefits wolves, but the problem is that we have no limit on how much we hunt (this does NOT apply to everyone, mind you).
>>330652
Off the topic of hunting- we would not need to provide for any natural preservation programs if humans didn't fuck up nature in the first place (through industrialization and expansion etc..). Humans don't have population caps like animals do- our populations do not fluctuate between overpopulated and underpopulated, like it does (or used to) between predators and prey.
Well, on second though, I guess the human population will decrease once we cannot expand anymore (by a huge amount), and then fluctuate naturally. When the time comes for the human population to drop, it will be a sad day indeed.

I'm done with this thread.
