I had a couple of these when I was a kid... I always wondered why they died. Turns out you shouldn't try to trigger the closing action yourself! But I don't think I ever saw them close anyway, leading me to believe the store my parents bought them from didn't know how to take care of them either.

Yes, they require acidic peat, hence the need for distilled or otherwise mineral-free water. Most fertilizers will also kill them, though dilute organic fish emulsion works fine.
