i have a hamster that needs its nails trimmed regularly. it's a pain in my butt considering he won't even let me touch him.

a website I looked at said to put a rock in the cage and the hamster would use the rock to grind it's nails down.

my hamster tried to eat the rock.

my mom's a vet asst. and she didn't have any good answers for me.

anyone with a similar problem?

Why isn't your hamster docile enough to be held? Especially if your mom's a vet assistant, she should know how difficult it is to control wild animals.

I was once told a brick or half of a brick, depending on your cage size, by the food and water where traffic is pretty frequent would help wear em down.

For a very short period, you can put fine sandpaper on the inside of his wheel (again, very short period or he will rub his hands and feet raw and bloody). And keep an eye on him while he uses it, take it away if you're going out or something. You could also line the inside of a shoebox with fine sandpaper and let him walk around for a short period.

If you try to trim his nails again, try getting a small scoop of peanut butter on the end of a spoon and put it in front of him so he can eat and be more calm while you reach for his paws and trim him (be very, very careful of how close you cut).

If worst comes to worst, a vet can do it, and it doesn't cost much.

Sure he wasn't just grinding his teeth on the rock?
Rodents' teeth grow forever right?
