I remember when we had to put away our dog some 9-10 years ago, he was 9 years old at the time, I was twelve. It was the hardest thing in the world to be there at the vet, seeing him get anxious at our behaviour and then a bit panicky when the first shot was given and he started to get groggy. It seemed like he tried to fight it but his legs gave way and he slumped onto the floor and fell asleep. He was like that, a fighter who wouldn't trust anyone else to keep us from harm. I would have trusted him with my life but a large dog that starts to get more and more suspicious of strangers, is stubborn and overprotective would have been a downward path for a family with only a (small) mom, a teenager daughter and a boy of twelve. He still obeyed us but he had already tried to bite someone twice. :[ God, I miss him so much even this day. He set the standard of Dog I compare all others to. If there were a heaven for dogs I'm sure his would have many squirrels up in trees. :') You have my condolences and of many other Anons too, I'm sure. We know what you're going through. Have strength.
