So /an/, I'm now the proud owner of two baby female rats. They're pretty sweet, haven't bit me once, but they're still getting used to the idea of being picked up, though they love sleeping in my hoodies front pocket. I can't decide what kind of bedding I like more. Someone suggested for the first month or so that I wear an old tshirt for a day and then let them use that as their bed. Sounds kind weird.. I went for the recycled newspaper fluff, can you guys recommend anything better? t-shirt, y/n?

Yay for ratties! They're gonna love that hoodie and every part of it. Remember, rats love tunnels and warmth. :)
T-shirt is unnecessarily big, I think. Give them ...your underpants! No, just kidding. If you want them to get used to your smell through some old clothes I guess socks might make for good bedding (but wash them first, use as little chemicals as possible and then carry them under your shirt for a day or something, to get the smell), but seriously the newspaper is probably good enough. Especially if you rip it by hand and knead it for some extra smell.

I used to use plain shredded newspaper for rat bedding. Just make sure you don't use wood shavings or anything that can get in their respiratory tracts. T-shirt, socks, it's all good. Rats are pretty hardy.

Shredded newspapers rocks as bedding.
All cloth-stuff you put in there WILL smell pretty bad after a week or to so you'll have to change them.
My rats love their two-floor hammock in fleece. I wash it every few weeks with the other laundry, and every now and then I make a new one.

Rats? Why not a guinea pig or hampster?
>> Anonymous
I like rats more because they are so smart and cute. My friends hampster ate her own leg and bit her etc. Though maybe it just wasn't the most sane hampster.

Hamster does NOT have the letter p in it...

Now that that's out of the way, I have 5 rats and I love love love Cell Sorb Plus bedding. A little pricy but comes in a 40lb bag, lasts a long time odor wise, and is virtually dust free. Other than that bedding I cut up old t-shirts and give them the sleeves and scraps to do whatever they want with and they have fleece/cotton hammocks. The shirt is mostly to just help them get used to your scent and for their added comfort, actual litter is what you need for their waste.

Because rats are cooler and guinea pigs and hamsters are overrated.
Plus, from what I know, rats are also smarter and more entertaining. I've owned rats, guinea pigs, gerbils, etc and my rats were more fun to own then the others.

Plus its awesome when you live with someone who's afraid of rats, and you own them.

I generally view rats as disease carrying vicious little beasts. Are pet rats clean and different than street rats?

No, professionally bred and store bought tame pet rats they are exactly the same as the big mean filthy feral creatures who eat out of dumpsters.

Dumbest question on /an/ ever.

Actually, no. When bought from a reputable dealer, pet rats are tamer, disease free and genetically sound.

Hampton the Hampster.... I forgot about that guy.

Rats are so sweet! I used to share my chocolate milk and my cereal with my little girl... She was so sweet. The only problem is that they are very likely to develop tumors that can get very large and painful for them. But they aren't dirty or nasty. They're probably one of the perfect pets.

Aspen or Carefresh bedding

Carefresh doesn't get as smelly and absorbs a lot, but it's kind of expensive.
