I'd go with a cat. Dogs are great but they have that disturbing doggie odor. Plus you have to walk them every day, train them, socialize them, blah blah... Cats essentially take care of themselves, you add food, water, and a good scratching post. Both make great companions, what matters most is how much of your time you can devote to caring for them, and dogs eat up much more of your free time than cats do.

Visit an animal shelter and check out the dogs and cats. Talk to the workers, tell them your situation and they'll try to match you with a pet they think you'll like.
