Save my cat /an/, ID this spider. Id !!Mm0D5l/jTAO
Hey /an/, I thought my flea medication had given my cat an allergic reaction so I took her to the vet (she's 16, old etc., an indoor cat).

But I found a spider in the corner of my kitchen, and I know my cat hunts down and kills spiders, especially dark ones like this. I need to know what kind it is. The pic/s are clear enough.

The only two types of spiders that are dangerous to cats are Black Widows and Brown Recluses (in the US). So /an/, I need that positive ID if this is a brown recluse *cue dramatic music* because if it is I'm LEAVING to go to the emergency room. I think it bit her in the mouth (she kills spiders by biting them).

PICS VERY RELATED. SAVE MY KITTY /an/!

>A brown recluse has a dark brown violin shape on the cephalothorax (the portion of the body to which the legs attach). The neck of the violin points backward toward the abdomen. However, what you should look at instead is the eye pattern of 6 eyes in pairs with a space separating the pairs. Most spiders have 8 eyes in two rows of four.

Another closeup. Sorry /an/ but this really is urgent. Yes I've googled, yes it's a close call. Yes, I need someone who knows what they're doing in IDing this spider.

I'm trying my best here but I'm failing (plus I think she punctured its abdomen w/ her teeth).

Getting as closeup as I can next shot, for now, more proof.

here marking on its back isn't similar enough to that one.. do you think?

just hope that a bite is what causing this and not a reaction to the flea medication =\

hopefully a positive ID on spider soon to come

Its not poisons. I had one of these bite me just the other day and it didn't even itch. Stung a tiny bit and thats it. I couldn't find a positive ID of it either but it didn't hurt me but with its sting of the pinch.

If your animal is in pain or distress, or is lethargic or having trouble breathing, and these symptoms are getting worse then yes, you do need to get your cat to the vet. Even if it doesn't appear to be in distress, swelling around the mouth, nose and throat can lead to problems with its airways and it may end up slowly suffocating. There are worse ways to go than by suffocation, but there are certainly better.

Oh, and a word to the wise, OP...this is an international board. No one pays any attention to the time zones on the posts.

Well anyway, it's after 10:00 AM now?

Also, I find the hurt cat pics are adorable for some reason. Maybe because I think it's kilarious that there's a closeup of a cat's mouth like that at all.

very inactive. hiding in her hiding spots that she usually goes to just to have some alone-time. but she's there constantly now. Very docile as well, just lets me move her around way more than usual (still responds to stimuli though).

appreciate it. and yeah, i know, but i explained i'm in LA earlier and wasn't the one who started citing times in the first place :P

not OP, but when you're poor, an emergency visit with NOTHING given to or done to the cat, alone is like $500.

dude, she's just NOT PURRING and acting very strange, only now (like, 9 hours ago) figuring out it might be a spider bite and not the flea medication I gave her (advnatage100).

>Hey /an/, I thought my flea medication had given my cat an allergic reaction so I took her to the vet

So... what did the vet say when you took your cat to the vet the first time?

Vets will sometimes work out payment plans, if you love your kitty then take it to the vet. Best advice.

nothing much, just that she had them.

AFTERMATH POST:

So AFTER the vet visit today, I'm finding out a bunch of things. One she has an oral infection thats inflaming the whole area so I "get to" give her antibiotics in liquid form down her mouth.

Let's just say I'm calling my neighbor in to help w/ that one. Putting my fingers on her anywhere near her mouth right now = hiss + resistance (she actually really good natured in general, so I know it hurts bad).

Also is 16 and seems to be developing kidney issues (typical in older cats, to be expected). Very dehydrated and lost half a pound in two days because she doesn't wanna open/use her mouth at all.

She got fluids, a B12 vitamin shot, and now has antibiotics to last a week. X-rays were taken, bloodwork being done, and intravenous fluids were given for hydration.

All said and done, $384 for a sixteen-year-old indoor cat I've known most of my life for this visit (she had one for getting her hyperthyroidism blood levels checked to get her medication refilled three days ago, that was $145). And it's not like I'm rich, not starving, but I think this is worth it.

She's been there for me so hey, all good. Pic is her in late 1992 or early 1993.

Awesome, OP. It's good to know she's better.

If he gave you a syringe, giving her meds is EASY.

Sit on the floor with her, and cradle her in your arms. Grab her scruff so its harder for her to get away. Then, just use the syringe to get into her mouth and slowly squirt it into her mouth. I've done this with feral cats, it shouldn't be hard for you.

Also, you should do this with water, if she's dehydrated,
