only words i can describe them: penis worm
>> Anonymous
My grandpa has a jar full of them, been sitting there in the shed for years. Yeah...they're still alive.
>> Anonymous
i always wanted a planarian, tell us moar if you get some.
>> Anonymous
tapeworms?
>> Anonymous
Why the fuck would you ever want a flatworm
>> Anonymous
>>182670
THEY'RE SO CUTE

Also they cost like 10 bucks for a few dozen of them.
>> Anonymous
>>182671
They're cute untill they get in your ass.
>> Anonymous
>>182673
Then they're REALLY cute.
>> Anonymous
Platyhelmenthes.

Not tapeworms, retards.
>> Anonymous
Just buy one.

Cut it in half.

Repeat.

Then you'll have many, many...whatever those are. Remember this once in middle school.

What are those, and what do they eat?

Planaria
>> Anonymous
Cool trick: You CAN teach them to go through a maze. Then if you cut it in half, when they become 2 flatworms, BOTH will know how to go through the maze. (That was a a science project I did in HS, and it works)
>> Planaria Anonymous
oh yeah i got stuck working with those things for a middle school science project.
buy them out of a science supply catalog. you can cut them in half and see that 2 weeks later they've grown back... but thats about the extent of the excitement. we fed ours a bit of boiled egg each day or two. pick them out of the water with an eyedropper to change the water whenever it gets dirty and smelly.
>> Anonymous
>>182690
how the hell do you teach them???
>> Anonymous
Coax them through to food (The boild egg that guy mentioned works) and they get the hang of going through on their own.
>> Anonymous
so how big are these things?
>> Anonymous
>>182690
That's because they follow a chemical trail left by the original planaria
>> Anonymous
They're planaria. They're boring. They regenerate when cut in half. They're tiny. There is pretty much nothing interesting about planaria.
>> Anonymous
So if you teach one worm, and then split it, and continue the tradition of splitting every few weeks/months. Will that in the end lead to a entire family of clones who each have the genetic memory of how to pass the maze?
>> Anonymous
Not sure how many times you can split them but it's not a chemical trail they'll follow...Once taught they can go through another maze if the layout is the same, (that also was part of the science project)
>> Anonymous
There's this one girl who's face reminded me of a planaria's... ergo, she reminded me of a gigantic walking penis. It made it really awkward to talk to her.

I find planaria weird, and that's keeping in mind I think squids are cute. That being said, to each his own and I hope you enjoy your swishy penis bugs.

one question to the cut in half people--don't you have to make sure you cut them in half the correct way? I can't remember if they have a brain stem or not...
just wondering.

>>182720
They have two ganglia.
>> Anonymous
You want fucking liver flukes???
>> Anonymous
>>182661

just go for a walk, barefooted in a malaysian rice paddy. Oh, you'll get them alright, you'll get them good.
>> Anonymous
>>182841

Planaria are not flukes! They don't parasitize anyone. They are predators.

They eat water-fleas and the like in the wild.
>> Anonymous
Planaria are creepy. Very few things creep me out, but these things are among them.
>> Anonymous
Also flat worms have a neat ability, if you can manage to train one to make it through the maze, kill it dry it out and crush it up, feed it to the others, and they will know how to get through the maze.

OH SHI-

Can I eat this thing raw?

A planarian can reproduce either asexually or sexually. In asexual reproduction the planarian detaches its tail end and each half regrows the lost parts. However several problems can occur so this is not done as often. In sexual reproduction each Planaria gives and receives sperm. Planaria have both testes and ovaries. Eggs develop inside the body and are shed in capsules. Weeks later the eggs hatch and grow into adults. Planarians can also reproduce by regeneration. If a Planaria is cut into two halves, both halves may become two new Planaria (regeneration). In one experiment, T.H. Morgan found that a piece coresponding to 1/279.2764th , to be exact, of a planarian could successfully regenerate into a new worm. This size (about 10,000 cells) is typically accepted as the smallest fragment that could regrow into a new planaria

It's very interesting, so what would they do in my guts, if I ate some?

"Gastric acid is one of the main secretions of the stomach, together with several enzymes and intrinsic factor. Chemically it is an acid solution consisting mainly of hydrochloric acid (HCl), and small quantities of potassium chloride (KCl) and sodium chloride (NaCl). ... The pH of gastric acid is 1 to 2"

What do you THINK they'll do in that, other than dissolve?

Last I recall, planarians are quite fragile. Our 11th grade biology class (2001?) had some, and we put them in depression slides to observe under low power microscopes. The only problem was that we used tap water. ~ 30 seconds after immersion, they stopped moving. Shortly after that, their bodies can be seen to literally disintegrate (instead of smooth, it turns fluffy, sort of like cotton).
>> Anonymous
lol dunno what they ate but as a kid we used to cut them in half then you have 2 and if you cut they're heads or tails in half they'll grow 2 heads or 2 tails they're weird
>> Anonymous
planarians. They're lovely.
>> Anonymous
>>183301
So if YOU eat the crushed up remains will you learn how to go through the maze? ANON MUST KNOW
>> Anonymous
>>183365

Something tells me you're still a kid. GTFO underaged.
>> Anonymous
so what or whom do they eat?
>> Anonymous
Boiled eggs, go learn to read.
>> Anonymous
Planarians will also thrive on raw pork liver. It's pretty neat to see them eat stuff... They just swim by the object and scrape off some with their tube-stomaches in the middle of their bodies.

Also, even a 1/16th of a planaria can regenerate into a complete one. So just buy one or two and scalp away.
>> ew jogn567
those are fugly why would you want one.

Very awesome things in conversations... Invariably no one really knows what it is, so you're forced to draw it for explanation. Then there is silence as the other person stares at the genitalia that you just drew...

No because we digest what we eat, these lil guys lack organs so they just absorb and assimialte all they food that they digest.
>> Anonymous
buy one, put in blender. wait 3 weeks and have a swarm of them ready for more blending.
