I don't know about the lung cancer in dogs thing, so I can't help you there. But as for the putting to sleep part, I would say only if there is no other option and only if your dog is in pain, uncureble pain.
I had a dog who lost his ability to use his back legs and he slowly but surely got sicker, but we knew he was happy and so we did whatever we could to keep him that way. for a year we acted as his back legs and carried him where he wanted to go. It was tough, but we loved him so we managed. one day though (and we knew it was coming, albiet we though a little later) he developed an infection and started drooling this yucky yellow-brown stuff, that ended up putting him in pain. we knew that mourning it was his time, so we took him to the hospital, and that bastared missed to first time! Soon though he feel into the deep doggy sleep. God I'm crying just thinking about it. I had that dog since he was a puppy, and since I was a child, he and his brother (who had a tumor that would kill him over night had we not put him to sleep before that pain) were my life. He died at 12, his bro a month later at 11, they were also goldens.
tl;dr: Only if you think it's the best thing for your dog, and if you know he's gonna be in pain otherwise.
