Where to Buy? Anonymous
Any advice on where I can find swan ducklings for sale? Even just suggestions on how I could find a supplier myself in this area. I need to find them around the central or southern Ontario region, or around Detroit. I don't really care which breed of swans.

Also, what are some other really awesome species of fowl that can survive in Canada? My boyfriend's grandfather loves this type of stuff and we're looking for a pair of something for his birthday.

swans are often protected by law. I cannot imagine you could buy them anywhere.

OP here.

His grandfather owns a farm, and has a huge pond with enclosures/shelters for all kinds of fowl. He has a few really crazy patterned chickens, peacocks, ginea fowl, canada geese, other geese, mallards... But he has always wanted swans, can't find them in his area (Sarnia-ish)

swans are nasty horrible creatures. they'll attack and sometimes kill anything that comes near their territory, which if placed in grandpa's lake means the whole lake. best advice, don't get a swan.

ENTIRE rowing training sessions have been cancelled because a swan was spotted in the lake or river.

And remember, rowers are these people with extremely broad shoulder and are extremely manly enough to sit around in nothing but a singlet and shorts at some 6am in the morning for practice.

Which is to say, putting a needle under your toenail and kicking the wall is a great for forgetting your headache.

Swans are tough and they have killed people before.

In the middle ages swans were placed in moats surrounding castles because they are ALOT tougher then dogs and more reliable. They also mate for life so killing one's mate only makes the other madder.

But I dont think itd be too difficult to obtain a swan. As long as your the ones taking care of them they won't kill your grandpa. But I wouldnt purposfully make them mad or anything

black swans for the win.
The ones here aren't aggressive at all, they always come up if you have food for them, and swim up to you if they see you.
But these are in a public lake, so they think humans= food bringers, so they are pretty friendly.

but, chances are, you probably can't get them in Canada, or any where else, but I would have no clue.

load of crap. when castles were first built, the moats were dry, they were just a defensive ditch. by the time they were filled with water to look pretty, the swans were there for the same reason, and the castle had lost its relevance as a military installation.

Oh yeah? Well I heard that cavemen back in the 1100's would use swans as the historical precursor to spears.

They'd just find their quarry, straighten the swan, throw it at the target and... FOOM.
