Did you know back in the 60s geneticists from the soviet union had some experiments in Siberia with foxes, they basically noticed that some foxes were more friendly than others and they would only breed the most friendly ones in an effort to domesticate them. Within a few generations they had become more like dogs, or fox-dogs, extremely friendly and very cute too.

I'm not sure what happened to them though.
>> Anonymous
>>273318
That's actually a dog, painted to look like a fox.
>> Anonymous
     File :-(, x)
>>273706
I think they're still being bred, but I'm not sure. The only bad thing is when they selectively bred for tameness, they also bred out the cinnamon coat color.

I'm an idiot. I should have just looked this up on wikipedia first. They sell them as pets to fund the ongoing project. Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tame_Silver_Fox

The scientists came up with a fox-dog result that wasn't really fox like. It looked different, acted different.. it had droopy ears and barked and lots of different dog-like things. In the end, it was more dog then fox, and only a fox by name. There are types of dogs with more resemblance.

It is a fox in genetics as well as name. These are foxes that are being domesticated. It really shows how readily many canids adapt to domestication. A few decades of selective breeding and they can't really be called wild animals.

Genetics is interesting.

Foxes are fun, honestly. Very playful, though very, very smart. Lucy and Snowflake (yes, crap names but I didn't name them) have a sort of tag team when I come in to clean their enclosure. Snowflake (a white/gray colored Silver fox) will whimper and lay down in the middle of the area were I'm cleaning, and when I go to move her, Lucy (a normal red) darts over and steals my tools (the rake or the bucket of food I bring in the morning). But they are loves, and are very similar to domesticated canines, in the fact that they, when handled and raised from kits, can become attached to their person/s. But they are smelly little bastards I'll give them that.

Link here is the website of where I work. http://www.gameparksafari.com/

And the picture is Kit Carson, one of the male red foxes (white and red variant.)

Those foxes didn't lose their red colouration due to being bred for tameness. They were bred from an existing colour mutation of red fox called the silver fox, which occurs in the wild. The ranch-raised foxes that were being used in the experiment started out without the red colour. :B
