Hi there, /an/. My dad died recently, leaving me with two bird dogs, a 12-year old German Shorthair and a 2-year old Brittany. The Shorthair is not fantastically well trained, but is obedient enough (I've hunted over him before) and only has about one year of the hunt left in him before arthritis or something sets in.
I'm concerned about the Brittany, however. He's still young, but is he still young enough that I won't have too much trouble training him for the field? I'm not sure how well my father had field trained him, as I've never hunted over him. I'm taking him out later this week; if he doesn't respond as well as I want him to, should I get some experienced help with training him?

tl;dr: Is it going to be tough to field train a 2 year old Brittany? Should I get experienced help?

I'm sorry about your father.
It'll be a little harder to train the dog, yes. The real problem is, that unless you are trained yourself, you could end up teaching the dog wrong things, or not train him with the effectiveness and confidence that you need.
I don't know how old you are, or how much you know, but it may be best to get a pro to help and for you to play a big part in his training. This way, you and your dog will both learn and also strengthen your bond with each other. Also, it may help to bring your experienced dog along! Your young dog will be able to learn from him.
