Hello, /an/. I bought a hamster (pic related, since she looks exactly like it) couple of days ago. She is six weeks old and terribly shy/afraid of humans.
I know that by talking with her, petting her (so that she'd get used to my scent) she could start being less afraid of me and other humans.

Other than those methods i just mentioned, does any of you have good tips? I've had two hamsters before, but they were fine with humans from the day i bought them.

Really, she's just going to be needing some handling. You can use treats to get her to associate good things with you.

I wouldn't recommend petting right now, as hamsters are prey animals and are instinctually afraid of things above them. Just hold her gently, talk soothingly, maybe rub her side with your finger. When she gets used to that, then you can pet her. You're probably terrifying her without even knowing it. =)

I suggest 12 yearold scotch and candlelight

They have been known to draw blood when frightened. I have been bitten at least once by every hamster I've owned. Never more than that tho.

I have two right now. One is about 2, the other is his son, and about 7 months old. To get them to the hold-able stage, I'd pick em up against their will and hold them close till they calmed. It takes about a week of doing this throughout the day.
