rat "boggling" Anonymous
argh! help me /an! I really want a rat, and I am only a few months away from getting one, but recently found out that rats do this thing with their eyes that I can't stand!

its called eye boggling. they vibrate their eyes in and out of their eye socket! it looks like their little ratty heads are about to explode! I can't stand the way it looks, its so fucking creepy... apparently they do it either when they are happy and relaxed or when they are stressed out and pissed. I want a happy rat but if it eye boggles at me i don't know if I can take it!

how can I get over this? is there anything I can think of other than "their heads exploding" or "their using their mind powers to control me"?

I really want a little ratty buddy to give yogurt drops to!

here are a couple videos of "eye boggling"

but they are so nice and loveable. I can clean pee and poo, I can afford to get them a giant cage with tons of toys, I know a good vet in town who knows about small rodent creatures. I can do all of that, its just the eye thing. I need to get over it somehow.

At first that creeped me out a little just cause it was weird, but then after a second or third time it stopped being weird and started being awesome.
I donno, I like weird. If I could do it I would.

ive owned twelve rats throughout my life and i've never seen any of them do this.
maybe i just didn't notice it?

keep watching the boggling videos until you become desensitized. i doubt they do it for long anyway.

So are dogs, cats, ferrets, etc. If a rat bothers you then get another animal. Problem solved.

I catch my rat bruxing and boggling every once in a while - it's creepy but he does it in very short bursts, and he will stop if you say his name or make any loud noises.

Wow, I've never seen a rat do that!
They do react to loud noises, my rats reacted to their names, if it bothers you, just distract them. Poke them or make a loud noise. Desensitizing would be a good idea, too.

Haha, sometimes I can catch my girls doing this (not too often though, only when they cuddle up next to me and start falling asleep) I personally can't stop laughing when they do it. :) They don't do it every time the get sleepy either.
It's rather sweet actually, one of them will come up to my shoulder and start bruxing and if I start to talk to her she'll get real excited and start bruxing like crazy until her eyes boogle.
It's not bad at all and they rarely do it (or, at least my girls don't)

I've had two rats and they've never eye boggled, but they both bruxed like crazy; but I enjoy the sound.
