So my dad found a snapping turtle nest in someone's yard today (he's a landscaper,) and put them in a bucket with some dirt. Does anyone have any experience with hatching snapping turtle or any turtle eggs? Will they be ok if we just leave them in the bucket in the garage or something and check the temperature once a day? I was thinking about hatching them and then keeping them until they were about a month or so old and then release them at a pond where I know snapping turtles live. Any help will be appreciated.

they live in a mostly water environment.
So bucket with dirt is bad.

They aren't hatched yet, they're still eggs.

They'll eat each other if you keep them in a bucket...

OP here, they have NOT hatched and won't for at least a month. I'm going to work out where I'll keep them when I see how many hatch. I have at least one, maybe two fish tanks that I could section off and could probably hold 3-4 turtles separately.

Snapping turtles are half land and half water (more less a swamp animal) I had a rescue one for a year before I let him go. I put my little guy with my painted turtles in an tank inside the house in the winter (1/2 filled with water with rocks etc to get out of the water as he pleased) and in the summer I had him in a large kiddy swimming pool. Give him a few feeder goldfish, turtle pellets, frogs etc.

Good Luck :) Very Cute

The snapping turtle got along with the painteds? Do you think I'd have trouble if I kept all the hatchlings in one tank?

I work with turtles for a living, including snapping turtles. Sorry to tell you this, but if your dad turned/moved the eggs at all, they're probably not going to hatch. Moist dirt is fine for the eggs if you want to try hatching them, make sure to keep it warm. You'll know if they're still viable in a few days if they start to stink. If they do hatch, set them up in an aquarium that has both water and places they can come up on land. It'd be best to keep them separate from any other turtles, and you might need to separate them if they start to act aggressively to each other. Feed them bits of earthworm. Good luck! Post pics if they do manage to hatch.
