Has anyone on /an/ ever seen one of these full grown or raised one to a considerable size? I'm just mostly curious and always dreamed of having a huge habitat built for one...
Never seen any full grown but there are a lot of youtube videos that might. I used to have the same dream. I'd go to my local specialty fish store and watch the little arowanas swim around. Then I glance at the price tag and wonder if I will even be able to own one.
There's a Chinese restaurant I went to some times, they had one in there for a few years, and it was about two and a bit feet long. I'm pretty sure it was the same one all those years, it didn't look like it was going to get eaten.
I've seen that fish in a sushi place nearby me, the poor thing has a dislodged eye that only looks downward. It's been like that for years now though, it's about 3 feet long.*damn he's a big fish now I think about it*But he's a sweet one though. You go there and if you pay attention to the tank he looks to follow whereever you may be looking at. And he eats goldfish :)
Yeah i've seen a large one with some nigger-feeding fish at my local Chinese restaurantsThey kept it in a huge tank that was probably over 50 gallons
ok thats either a asian arowana or jardini in the pic both of which are very large freshwater fish i keep a jardini myself and i can say that it is an awesome fish. it is my favorite of all the fish i keep. mine it about 24" in length and he is in a 200 gallon tank by himself. and the price is a bit steep for a freshwater fish, however in the grand scheme of things its not the bad compared to saltwater fish or just a tank with lots of cheap fish. also i have seen juv specimens for sale as cheap as $65. if you have any questions about keeping this fish just ask.
>>316978It's an Asian Arowana in the OP pic.
Asian arowanas are illegal in the US unfortunately. I'd love to have one, but all we get is jardini/leichardti/silver and black arowana, They are still cool but the colors on asians are just REDICpic related
>>317049almost forgot african arowana and arapaima, but still!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ks4AyVx8DWMHere's a video of a guy swimming in his indoor pond with a few Arowanas, it's a pretty good size comparison.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cjm_f1pLaUE&feature=relatedHere's a video of an Arowana and a baby Duckling playing, very cute.
Some notes about the arowana...-Asian one is Illegal in the US and they get around 70cm-Austrailian one is similar in shape and size but are very aggresive compared to the asian one-SA arowana (silver/black) gets to be about 1m and develop a condition known as drop eye which is assumed to be caused by various factors-180 US gallons seems to be the standard tank size; heavy protien diet so over filtration is recommended-www.monsterfishkeepers.com can give you information should you want to own one
