ITT: What's a good animal for a small birdcage? I mean like a rodent or other mammal, not a bird.

Pic unrelated.

They have wire bottoms which a not-bird would get caught in.

Yeah, no one ever puts sawdust or newspaper on the bottom - faggot.

Anything that goes in a regular small animal cage will go in a bird cage ON THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS:

1) The bottom is not easily removed. Many bird cages have slide-out pans which could be wriggled out of.
2) The bars are not wide enough to allow the animal to escape. Things like rats and mice can squeeze through spaces between bars with relative ease..
3) You will offer things like platforms and hammocks. Unless it's an oddly shaped bird cage and very wide, that base isn't going to be enough in the way of living quarters.
4) It's actually meant for pets. Antiquey, decorative bird cages aren't always made out of animal-friendly materials.
5) It's actually large enough to house whatever you're thinking of getting.

Since you used the word "small," however, I'm inclined to say you probably won't be able to fit anything in it comfortably. Mice and hamsters would very likely be able to escape, and I would not try to stick a rat in a tiny cage.

Wrong. Rats are not small, genius. A male rat can easily weight upwards of 3 pounds, and body length can easily be 8 inches, not including the tail. That would not fit into a small birdcage.

It would have to be an awefully large bird cage. with at least 288 square inches of floor space (24 feet long, one foot deep) to be suitable for rats.

lol... started to write 24 inches long, then decided to write 2 feet long.. which made it come out as 24 feet...

Either way, I mean 2 feet long, and one foot deep.
