Hey /an/, I just got a 25 gallon aquarium (well not just got, it's been running without any fish for a few days now) and have been reading about keeping fish healthy and alive. So I'll cut the the point, I have 4 questions mainly:

1. What kind of fish should I get? I rather not have to go through the trouble of a salt water fish or blackish water.

2. Are there any tips that I should follow for a planted aquarium? I plan to have a lot of plants if I end up going tropical fish. Should I get one of those C02 thing? Or is having fishes enough?

3. Should I set up a high current or water motion aquarium? Is it stressful for most tropical fishes such as bettas? What about plants?

4. What kind of theme should I do? How can I tell if a certain household item can be used as decor? I was thinking of doing polluted type of feel such as glass bottles, metal spoons, etc. I'm also open to any suggestions.

1 - personally I'd go for lots and lots of neon tetras and a few discus for a plant aquarium, they're pretty and they don't hurt the plants. plus a bunch flying fox siamesis to keep the plants clean from algae.

2 - get a fertilizer and a few fast growing plants to make sure the algae doesn't get the upper hand + anything you find pretty

3 - get a pump that pumps 2-3 times the content of your tank per hour, that should be enough and it won't bother most fish. Bettas are happy whatever you do to them. you could chop it up, fry the pieces, stitch them back together in the wrong order and it'll still be happy as a clam (however happy they are). don't worry about the bettas.

4 - never have metal objects in your tank, it's harmful for your fish and plants. make sure the items you put in there are free of unidentified chemicals (or.. all chemicals) and Anything water soluble, glass is fine as long as it's properly cleaned (cleaned with water, nothing else).

I can't see the pic, what fish is it?

easy fish to keep are platys and danios, as well as bettas. in fact i have a tank of all three! they're really hardy and happy fish, and i love bettas

consider cichlids, they are pretty hardy (most of them) but can only be kept with other aggressive fish.

the filter's flow should be okay for water motion and dissolved oxygen, but you could get a bubble stone or a pump... i dont have either in my tanks...

if you're a beginner don't use too many plants... and plus for some you need special lighting and co2 injectors, not worth it if you're starting out IMO.

oh, but a 25 gallon tank would only be good for smaller cichlids and maybe only one or 2... do the research before you buy anything

A good rule of thumb to go by is an inch of fish per gallon, to keep from over-crowding. For example: 20 or so one inch fish, or 10-12 2inch fish, etc. But its always a good idea to start with only a few, and then don't add too many at a time thereafter. pretty much all types of tetras and danios are very good starter fish, all community. Are you also familiar with how to properly acclimate bagged fish? its very important to do so.
