The very first thing I learned was that they make a large mess in a relatively short time frame, and they make a lot of noise.

If you don't or won't have the time to clean the cage on a daily basis it will stink and be a general problem.

That said, I do miss my piggy.

My brother when we were young owned 3 guinea pigs in total, one was named Ruby, so red-haired and had red eyes, we think it was blind. She Lived for 5 years, but died of teeth issues. Probabyl the sweetest guinea pig I had ever seen. was playful, nibbled, did all sorts of crazy thing and would squeak and squeal at us when the fridge door opened.

Had 2 more female guinea pigs, both lived a while before dying a couple years ago. One died later after the other, was a sad situation

My neighbour once babysitted a guinea pig that was really nervous all the time. Of course they had to do something dumb like dropping a vase onto the floor and thus killing the guinea pig because of the loud noise.

I almost neutured my cousin's longhair guinea pig by accident. The stupid thing had so many clumps and knots in its fur that you couldn't really tell the difference...
>> "Brutus" Anonymous
My sister used to have two guinea pigs. We both Loved them very dearly. One of them we had tried to sex the other, although they were both males. So the other scratched his eye. From then on, the first one "Ju-Ju" always had a puss covered slash on his eye. We took him to the vet, but they couldn't do anything. He could run up the stairs, but was very afraid about going down the stairs. "Brutus" was the same way. Afterwards they got a long with each other...

"Ju-Ju" died warmly from old age. But when my sister left for college. I was told to take care of "Brutus". But as a child, I just wasn't responsible.

Brutus, spent months... Months in a cage underneath of a desk. Breathing his own piss and shit. Starving sometimes for weeks. He was forgotten, by the only caretaker he had, as well as the only caretaker he was left with.

When I remembered to feed him. I didn't clean his cage. He was probably too weak to try to escape, not that he ever gave any attempt to. He probably didn't know any other life. But he probably missed my sister...

I realized one day, that Brutus was laying on his side, something that I don't think Guinea Pigs ever do. I talked to my father, but he was too busy to take care of a pet he hardly knew we even had. I watched him die. Outside of his cage, on the floor of our First Floor bathroom because it was warmest in our house.

I didn't know the number of a vet. The internet hadn't been available. Nor did I have any money or resources. I just watched Brutus die. And only then did I realize... I was a completely and utterly irresponsible human being.

The only responsible thing I ever did was Bury Brutus. I decorated a Clear Plastic Container, with many soft things, and laces stolen from my Mother's room. I prayed that he was more happy wherever he was...

...And I swore I would never keep a pet in my life, for fear that I would just simply forget about it. And leave it to die an unfulfilled life.

Guinea pigs die from loud noises? We had two that lived for seven years and we had a fucking loud dog and they were in the same room as the TV and my younger brother would always slam the door...

Sounds like the babysitter performed a valuable service.

don't leave them alone in the sun. Apparently they don't sweat or something and will die. Happened to my uncle when he was little.

My gf and I have one in our apartment. It always makes plenty of noise whenever we crunch a plastic bag... or open a bag of chips.... or anything that makes a similar sound. It associates that sound with the sound of her food bag. So she goes nuts.

Also, when we come home she greets us with plenty of oeeettts. oet oet oet oet

Whenever they want something, they'll let you know. They make plenty of noise. They can get very attached to you. They're easy to take care of and keep happy.

my sister has a pig called florence (thats her in the pic...the pig, not my sister...).
she doesn't get a lot of attention so when i go home she's very timid and scares easily, but i always give her lots of fuss and she likes to sit on me and munch her way through some lettuce or cellery. by the time i leave she lets me pick her up and hold her without any fuss.

she's got a massive growth on her leg though, i meant to take a pic to post here while i was back for easter. the vet said he'd never seen anything like it and he couldn't remove it cos there wouldn't be enough skin left to close it up afterwards. any ideas? is it a common pig thing?

When I was younger I had several birds (cockatiels and parakeets) and a guinea pig. The pig and one of my parakeets became best friends. Whenever my parakeet would escape her cage, she would be found with the pig. They would even talk, since my parakeet learned how to mimic the guinea pig. I thought it was rather amusing.
