Hey /an/!

I've got a spare 10 gallon tank here... What should i do with it?

-I like fish.
-I like reptiles.
-Not a huge fan of small mammals... but i'm open to awesome ones.
-I already have one Leopard Gecko in a long 20gallon

Any epic ideas?

Fire-bellied newt. Make it a bitchin' waterfall. It will live for like 15 years and be awesome.

Holyshit Anon, firebellies look fucking AWESOME.
I'll be doing more research on these. I hope i can find a petstore that has them...

Keep the ideas comming, guyz.

Get one or two cute orange and white hampsters. Although cleaning the tank suck.

NO hamsters...
They only live about 36 months. Warmblooded, meaning they eat and defecate a lot. More cleaning involved. You can handle them, but they piss and shit all over you.

Fire bellies newts can live together with fire belly frog/toad (I forget what it is)... I had a few before I moved cross country and had to leave mine with my parents.

In the two years (we) have had them, never once did the eat anything or have any food missing. (I tried all kinds of worms, big crickets, small crickets, newt pellets, shrimp pellets, fish food, dried blood worms.)
Don't listen to what any pet store will tell you, experiment and find out what your little newts like. Every pet store I found told me they LOVE the water and to do a tank filled with water or a 50/50.... mine hate water. They dipped in a little pool I made for them, but otherwise they preferred to have some dirt (I got the cubes you buy and they expand with water). I kept the dirt moist and sprayed them down every few days.

All the Russian Dwarves I've had have been snippy little bastards. Cute as all hell, but they liked to nip my fingers a lot when I carried them. Also, hamster balls are a bad idea if you let them roam around an apartment. Sooner or later insects will come in droves unless you clean all the stuff they drag around.

Emperor scorpion? Low toxicity (pretty much harmless unless you're allergic to it), lives a long time, eats crickets and stuff, likes higher temperatures. Also good for scaring anyone that wants to know "What's in the tank?? ^____^"

actually now that I think about it, I bet it'd eat a lot of the same things your gecko does as far as live food goes.

Go with the newts/frogs. Great to have variety, they live hella long and are easy to take care of.

Just don't let them escape ;_;

Use it to store about 10 gallons of documents.

Hilarious. I'll have to consider that... I was looking at tarantulas as well. Is it wrong that i find them kind of cute?

So far, amphibians are looking to be where it is at. Very unique animals, they'll be fun to have around. And keeping two different critters in one tank would be really quite fun. Plus, their enclosures always look very attractive, unlike a lot of rat and hamster set ups.

Another thing i was thinking of: Beta fish with Neon Tetra cohorts. Apparently the two, if housed correctly, do fine together. Epic, yes? Anyone have experience with this?

get a fucking crab

octopus is fine too

Bettas + small community fish will usually work fine. Neons *can* be delicate, just make sure the tank is appropriately cycled etc. Personally, I really like white cloud mountain minnow. They're not vibrantly colored like neons are, but I've found them to be hardier in most situations. Just my personal experience, though! Pic related.

I'll look into those cloud minnows. They don't seem as common as neons, but i'll keep my eyes peeled.
Also going to start looking around for newts. I had no idea that they were so awesome.

A paludarium!
My friend used to have two fire-bellied newts in a ten gallon, and she had them for like 8 years before she had to give them away. They were awesome.

Hamsters don't like people, or each other. There is no point to hamsters.

I completely forgot until the other poster said about the escaping thing.

KEEP A LID ON THAT THING AT ALL TIMES.
Seriously, you give them 10 seconds and they are up the wall and gone (some idiot at one of my favorite pet stores left the top open all night, surprise, no newts in the morning).
