Dear /an/,
Hey guys, I'm new but I've always loved 4chan. But, I have pressing matters that I must share with you. This is my cat Beauford. He's pretty awesome as he loves to climb and is very playfully. Sometimes I just want to pet him but he has a problem with biting/clawing. I'd say he's about 8 or so weeks old, maybe older and I don't abuse him. Any suggestions on how to make him stop being so violent?

I always just say "OW!" loudly and take my hand away. I guess that's kind of similar to kitten play - when one gets too rough the other one makes a bunch of noise and runs away. Your kitty's just playing. He doesn't WANT to hurt you, but he'll never know if he is if you don't tell him when he is. Since he doesn't speak english you have to show him in a way he understands..

Hope that helps..

Scruff him and give him a biff on the nose. Scuffing him will calm him down. Unfortunately, all kittens go through the biting/clawing the owner to death stage. :) My friends kitten Snowball just got over it.

hold still and say "ow".
He'll understand that.

Sometimes i bite my cat when he bites me.

I did that too. Don't bite the cat too hard. Just a little nibble to show him who's boss.

If you don't mind risking eye-loss. That's why savage pirates who eat their food live have eye-patches.

A lot of kittens can be like that, they see EVERYTHING as play. I wouldn't hit him like some people are saying, just be gentle, if he scratches/bites, ignore him for a while. He'll probably calm down and start to enjoy being petted in a month or two.

Kittens are kittens. They instinctively bite during play because it's training for when they hunt as adults (leftover from when they weren't domestic). He'll calm down with age. Try to catch him when he's sleepy if you can't wait through the troublesome months XD

Also show him who's boss XD Cats rub their cheeks on things to show that they own them (scent glands and all) and my cat would always be rubbing her cheeks on me and then one day I bent down and rubbed right back with my cheek and I haven't had problems from her since. I don't know if that would really work with all cats though lol since we don't actually have scent glands in our cheeks.

Spritz with a water bottle every time it does it, without fail. It's how we've cured all our cats of any bad habits they had and so long as you're consistent about it, it should work.

what if you want to bathe your cat.

will it take it as punishment?

Fuck, what is wrong with you people? Biting and clawing in a kitten is NOT bad behaviour, it's just PLAY. Let the poor little fucker have it's childhood. It'll calm down in a few months.

For those of you who think this is unusual or "bad" behavior for a kitten, YOU ARE FUCKING STUPID AND SHOULD NEVER BE ALLOWED TO OWN PETS.

Kittens play. They play with their paws and teeth. Why? Because they are fucking animals. If your kitten scratches/bites you too hard during play, yell "no" or something, but he also *needs* to be offered toys that he can wrestle with. You can use cheap or free shit from around your house, like old socks, but the play wrestling behavior is perfectly normal.

You actually may want to consider getting a second kitten of similar age so he'll have someone to wrestle with. The reason for this will become more obvious as kitty grows. When he's 5+ months old, he'll still be a playful kitten but he'll be a BIG playful kitten and his scratching and biting will be even more painful. If he doesn't have another cat to play with, he'll release his energy on you and it may very well drive you insane. I used to volunteer at a shelter and I talked to so many families who wanted to give up their kittens at 5-8 months or so because of this rough playing. So please consider it.

signed.

if another cat is out of the question get a feather toy or some other toy and play with the kitten. he will expend his biting desires on it rather than you.

I loved my cats when they were still playfull, now that they are older, they are boring.

Yeah I 'biff' them on the nose too and if they won't stop grab them like a mother would for several seconds to calm them down.

Sometimes I'll start the play by rolling them on their backs quickly, it helps to keep them in line if they feel that you could pounce on them. It also helps to have some small easily rolling cat toys around as well as a bright piece of string or wisp. Young are just like any child they MUST be played with.

You should pay attention to how the kitty's tail moves. If it sways slightly after each time you pet it, it'll stay calm and let you pet it for a while. If the tail starts swishing from side to side rapidly, chances are it has become restless and you should let it go on the floor and pull out a toy. If you keep holding and petting it while it is restless, chances are you'll get pawed or bitten.

Kittens tend to bite first since they don't really know you. Once they get more acquainted with you, they will show a bit more patience and press its paw against your arm or meow to be let go before it eventually bites you if you hold it too long.

Ya know, I just wrestled with my kitty. If she bit me, oh well. She never broke skin and hasnt even after 3 years. Her claws have sure, but thats all.

Today she is a happy loving cat. She sleeps with me and follows me around the house when she isnt asleep. So that being said. Its a phase. They grow out of it and depending how you handle decides what kind of adult cat they will be.

Anon is right: if your cat bites you should say "OW!" in a loud voice and stare him in the eyes. He'll learn to play without biting or scratching.
The biting advice is the worst advice I've ever seen.

another good thing for when they cross the line is to get right up near their face and growl at them.

My cat never bites OR scratches me intentionally. The only time I've been scratched is when I'm holding him, something startles him, and he wants to get away, FAST.
>> Anonymous
I used to wrestle my cat as well, and the bites and scratches were never that serious. I think the constant contact made him not bite and scratch for real. He was a male cat. We had a female cat though, and she would scratch for real. I would never wrestle her.

Look, I've been trying to stay out of this thread, because the OP pic bothers me.

Is that a kitten trying to bite someone's nipple? Srsly, am I the only one who noticed this?

Oh, I knew it was a guy, that is what made it extra disturbing.

It really really looks like a guy trying to get a kitten to nurse on his nipples to me. And thats not cool.

Every single thing everyone has said works, obviously. People use different ways to bring up their pets, but most common ways seem to work well.

That is, except not doing anything. You have to let him know you don't enjoy it, in whatever way you prefer. =)

lol. I was wondering how long this post would go before he himself would get flamed.

As for your cat. Animals yelp then something bites/scratches them too hard so mimicing that will trigger a response that usinf claws/biting too hard is bad and it hurts you. Now if you have adopted an older cat they will prolly think you are a pussy and hate you forever, but if it is a kitten he prolly wont know any better

I had a feral cat, took him years and years to calm down

If it bites or scratches you, grab it in its neck and blow in its face. He will stop doing it.
