So I want to get a small pet, and I was looking into sugar gliders.

has anyone had one or know anything ?

Sugar gliders are very hard to take care of. People kill 'em all the time by accident. Are you sure you don't want something a little less high maintenance? Chinchillas are as bad.

True they are hard to care for as they do need special matinence but they are adorable.

A good small pet to start with? Rats, mice, hamsters.

From a very young age you have to spend a lot of time with them. Otherwise they will be forever scared of people and very nervous.

They shit\piss on everything although considering their size that's really not a big deal. They also bite and scratch and considering how sharp their teeth are it not infrequently draws blood.

They're also quite noisy believe it or not, and will chirp, chatter, and screech all night. Moreover they're rather smelly even if you do clean the cage regularly. Not a big thing though. No worse I'd think than hamsters or rabbits.

The other thing is you have to be careful to hold onto them at all times. If they run away it's a bitch to find them, and they're extremely fast, delicate, and thus hard to catch. Oh and they glide. ...which is pretty cool to watch but um...

On the other hand, they are very soft, very cute, and if properly trained quite sweet. You can, of course, also put them in a hamster ball. Which is really really cute.

The friends I know who have one love the little bugger despite all the probs listed above. I know I wouldn't want one 'cause I'm lazy when it comes to pets. My kitty is trouble enough for me. But as long as you're willing to spend the time and money and suffer some scratches, bites, and shittings-on...then sure.

...after all, it's not like they're going to scratch your furniture...

I would actually suggest a flying squirrel. They are cheaper than sugar gliders, diurnal, can be potty trained (my cousin even got one to use the toilet, though it could not flush), and are generally like well... a squirrel in demeanor.

Plus, sugar gliders can be harder to get a vet for and are more prone to ailments. Flying squirrels are often able to be taken to any vet that works on rodents (rats, hamsters, mice) and are pretty hardy – even in comparison to other rodentia.

We have two sisters. You have to make them this special goop to eat which consists of honey, apple juice, this nasty smelling powdered formula, wheat germ and some other crap. Found the recipe on the internet..

They need a big cage with lots of toys. Ours have a giant hamster wheel and love it. They're nocturnal and be prepared for los of barking and yipping at night. Also, they bite REALLY hard for such little things. Fun pets though.
