I'm thinking about getting some white mice, what would I need to do in order to insure that my two cats don't murder them? They never come in my room, (I picked them up and threw them out when they did) so if they start coming in again, would it work to just toss them out again, or is prey a stronger motivator than negative reinforcement?

>negative reinforcement
*punishment

just keep your door closed so the cats can't come in, or if for some reason this is not possible, keep the mice in a room that the cats can't get into.

Depends on your cats. Some cats won't give a shit. Others will flip the fuck out.

Just make sure the cage is very, very sturdy and that it's low to the ground just in case the cats do get in and go nuts trying to get to the mice.

Pfft, /an/ has too many "zomg live food is zo coool!!!111" noobs.

Mice are awesome pets, keep the door shut on your room and get angry if the cats go in (and then chill when they've exitted the room) and it should be fine.

You need to get a cage that is sturdier than most plastic ones with lids you get from the pet store. Then you need to put it in a place where the cats can't knock it over and make sure they can't get it open.

When I kept mice I built a cage out of a metre-long display case sort of thing, so in the end it had glass sliding doors on the front, wire mesh on the back and top and was two-storey. My sister's cat figured out how to slide open the glass door with her paw, and killed one of them and let the others run around my room, so I ended up having to devise a lock for it. Then they were safe even if the cats sat on top of the cage and watched them :D

More mice pics?

I had a gorgeous white mouse once, that had been a feeder mouse (what a waste that would have been, if she had just been snake food). She was really smart and she liked hanging out on my shoulder. Whenever I cleaned her house, I would put her in one of those little plastic critter carriers on the dining room table. She was always very calm, so I always left the top of the critter carrier open. I had done this many times. I was stupid.

One day, I was right next to her cleaning her tank, when suddenly my cat appeared out of no where and snatched her out of the carrier with one paw and made off with her at top speed. I caught up to the cat, pried her mouth open and got my mouse, who seemed to be fine. She died two days later anyway. :(((((

The moral of my story is: cats are evil, so keep your mice the fuck away from them. I agree with keeping the cage low to the ground... it'll be easier for them to bust it open if they can knock it off of something.
