ok, /an/, i need your help.

i've got a dog who will NOT let anyone clip her nails. i've tried everything. she's not afraid of the clippers themselves or anyone touching her feet, it's only when the clippers touch her nails that she freaks out. i've taken her to the vet and the groomers before, and neither of them can clip them either. she's a relatively big dog, i've only got 20 pounds on her, so i can't really pin her down or anything. treats don't help, nor do tranquilizers. she won't bite or hurt anyone, but she's very good at keeping her feet away from you.

what do i do? it's at the point where she's almost walking on her nails. i take her for a long walk every day on the pavement, but it just doesn't wear them down fast enough.

dogs just dont like thier paws fiddled with, ya gotta ease her into it, start out by touching her paws with your hands, if she doesnt freak out, great, if she does, back off but keep at it.

the object is to get the animal used to the sensation, the only way to do that is with exposer, and lots of it.

also, just grab her around the scruff of the neck, it SHOULD make her a bit more passive, its one of those, get em young deals.

ya fiddle with thier paws early in life, not a big deal, do it after they reach adulthood and they bark back so to speak

edit on the above, after rereading, if its a really big dog, adult, squirms alot, probably just a 3 man job. One dude on her neck, one on the main body, one on the paw, mussel if necessary.

see, they tried that at the vet. i believe they had 3 or 4 people in there and the still couldn't do it.

and like i said, she's totally cool with just touching her nails and paws, but once you touch them with the clippers she just freaks out and runs away. i've had her since she was born, and she never used to do this until she was a few months old.. and it's not like she ever got hurt by the clippers or anything

If it's just the clippers, try filing her nails and see how it works.

huh, i just tried that and she seemed to put up with it well enough (earning her the coveted pupperoni treat!). i can tell it's gonna take a lot longer to do a nail than clipping would, but at least it works. thanks!

Take her for walks on rough concrete. That'll file them down. We do that for our horses (on the road) for the abuse cases that won't let you touch their feet. If her toes are really long, this probably is your best bet. The quick (flesh part) is going to be distended into the nail..and well you don't want to cut that. As the nail files down with walking the quick recedes.
Another thing you could try is teaching her to 'shake paws'. When she gives you the paws willingly, fiddle with her toes and mess between them, over the nail, etc. Bring in the clippers and tap them on her toes. Praise her when she holds still. If you both get frustrated, make her give you her paw one last time and feed her a treat. Leave on a good note.

You can try a dremel rotary tool if she puts up with the filling.
