Hello /an/

I'm moving to a new apartment and I'm on the market for a dog, I'm thinking about those tiny and cute dogs but it also has to have a nice personality, playful but also calm when the situation requires it (if I'm watching TV and I don't want to be bothered)

Also, if anyone knows what race the dog in my pic is, i'll be gratefull

thanks for the suggestions!

We have a Maltese and she's pretty much like that.
Stay away from some of the terriers, as they are really active.
It's even better to adopt from the local shelter, though. You can tell a lot about a dog by watching it for a little while.

The puppy looks like a Maltese. Don't get an actual Maltese, they bite without warning and have shitty temperament for the most.

If you're looking into the white fluffy dog kind, I suggest a bichon frise. They are known for their fantastic temperament.

Other breeds to look for a papollon, or a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Despite what 4chan raves over, Corgis aren't best for you, they are high exercise and they shed a lot.

My maltese is that absolute sweetest dog i've ever had/met. Just because you've had a shitty experience with one doesn't mean all of them are like that :)

You'll be surprised. Out of the small dog breeds, the Maltese are known to bite without warning, and they are NOT stranger friendly. Hundreds of maltese end up in shelters each year because people never knew they bit.

what about the norfolk terrier? I actually think i'll get one of these if they have a nice character.

wikipedia says that is a good pet and they adapt well to the enviroment

west highland terriers are fucking great, temperament wise, one of the few terrier breeds that are. If you can find a relatively quiet one, its a winner. my neighbour has a pair and they are so sweet and friendly with everyone and very relaxed.

actually you'd probably do better with a larger breed of dog if you want something that's playful but lounges. get something like a great dane or a mastiff. they still need exercise (just as much as a little one you'd get) but they make excellent pets.

I'd really recommend miniature schnauzers. They're very loyal, very playful but calm down when it's quiet in the house. I rescued a 10 year old mini schnauzer last year and also have an 8 month old schnauzer puppy - they're both lovely dogs. They're also great for people with allergies.

picture related - my puppy at 4 months (sorry about quality, puppies don't tend to stay still for long) :3

I've never had a problem with large dogs in apartments, since they they were big oafs and just wanted to lie on the couch all day. They don't need anymore exercise than little dogs, so don't let that put you off a big dog.

But as far as small dogs are concerned, my vote is for West Highland Terriers. They're not too hyper, sweet happy little dogs and cute as hell. Most terriers are spastic, though.

Bischons are also cool because they don't shed and they're very sweet and they look like cotton balls.

I don't know if my mini-long-haired Dachshund is characteristic of the breed, but when I'm home, all he wants is to cuddle on me or near me. He is also easy to convince to play, so I would possibly look into it?

Pic related.

I'm pretty sure that is a caucasian dog. He might be like, an octoroon, though. You never can tell.

I've never known a Maltese-cross that I didnt like.

And if you can get past the severe underbite, and don't mind keeping up with the doggie haircuts, Shi-tzus have lovely happy playful personalities. If they're trained at ALL, they don't bark much, and since they were bred as lapdogs (sleevedogs?), they're often calm and cuddly too.

Hounds tend to be playful, but lounge. I recommend beagles, if you can find one that doesn't have a tendency to bark or howl. Dachshunds are the exception to the rule, of course. They've got terrier blood and require a firm hand to train. Even housebreaking can be a pain.

Pugs are the answer to war.

If we do not heed the terrible power of pug, soon we shall be dominated by their cuteness and humanlike behaviors.

They watch, they cling, they learn. Then they snore really loudly.

The only thing wrong with cocker spaniel poodle mixes is that they're called COCKAPOOS.

As far as small dogs go, I like cairn terriers more so than the other working terriers. The Tibetan terrier might be more suitable, though, as they are bred for lapdogs/footwarmers and will take on the demeanor of their owners, and will be calm for terriers. Both are very sweet dogs. Cairns are more apt to get into trouble than Tibetans, and are more high-energy.

Both are around the same weight, I think, the cairn being short and strongly-built and the Tibetan taller and lanky with thick fur.

that in op pic is a maltese pure bred. cheaper when they're mixed. generally almost 2g. BAWW
