It's probably not a cicada. Cicadas are quiet once it gets dark, so if you're hearing it at night it's most likely not a cicada.
There is a huge variety of different kinds of crickets, grasshoppers/locusts, and katydids--and some of them can be extremely loud, especially if they are sitting in just the right place for the sound to be amplified and reflected back towards you.
Insects like these start making noise at dusk.
Frogs or toads are another option, but if you describe the sound like creaking wood it's probably an insect and not a frog.
