What the fuck do I do with these things? My first instinct is to squash it, but I know it eats some unwanted pests (otherwise the spiders wouldn't be here).
But what if it gets me in my sleep? These things come out at night...

It looks like wtf big. Scary.

most spiders don't have enough venom to do anything but make you itch. they'll only bite something human size if they think they're getting attacked.

if you get an infestation, it means you have larger problems than just spiders. their ecosystem is self regulatory (unless you live next to trees, then they have an invasion launchpad).

The one in your picture should be thrown outside. there's no need for ones that large.

The one I just saw was a little over an inch in length. It was near my bed when I lost sight of him.

I hope they eat cockroaches...

Wish you had a better top view picture. In my area of the country i have brown recluses. This almost looks like a wolf spider. The only ones we really worry about in the usa are black widows and brown recluses. If You dont pay ppl to spay your place and it has old wood in the structure It has brown recluses. Brown Recluses are as there name says a recluse. You rarely see them. You get bit in most cases and you pin them down while sleeping or working. These lil creatures are really cleaning your place of other pests. As long as they are not thick in your house. Running across your face waking you up dont sweat it. They been around you your whole life. You just caught a glance of one and it worried you. If you get another view of it try n catch it under a cut to put it outside if your worried about it. I can tell you. If its a wolf spider I would leave it. Its the top of the preditor food chain and eats everything that moves. The largest trhing that moves it would chase is other spiders. like brown recluses. I've noticed that spiders in places where roachs are heavy/present. Don't really eat them. I'm not saying they wont eat them. If you read roachs are nasty with protective coating that repels most things except mice from wanting them. Good luck on house pet and if you get a better pic of 1 a top view post it.

If that's a house spider or wolf spider, do nothing. They'll keep your house clean of any unwanted insects and whathaveyou. If you have a lot of them, that means you have a serious bug infestation of a completely different kind. In normal conditions you'll only have a couple of house spiders in a medium-sized house, and you may not see them in weeks.

I have a shitload of spiders in my shop, and no roaches. I hate roaches.
There's three seperate species of large spiders living in there, big black southern house spiders that weave cobwebs everywhere, wolf spiders, and these black and white funnel web spiders that make giant dense cloth-like webs. If I could spin spiderwebs into thread, I could make a shirt every week.

OP here. The one I saw looks a lot like a hobo spider:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hobo_spider

But a lot bigger than the wikipedia article states. I've seen some as big as 2 inches in length, but generally they're no bigger than 1 inch.

Hobos aren't supposed to have stripy legs like this one does. House spiders on the other hand have stripy legs although they are otherwise almost identical. I'm fairly sure it is one, and you have nothing to worry about.
