OK /an/, I've decided that I'm probably going to be getting a tortoise within the nest week or two. My question to you is what type should I get? Box turtles are out of the question right now, and I'm looking into Russian Tortoises. Any other alternatives?

Russians are about the easiest ones to find. They are also super easy to care for.

NO THERE ARE NO OTHER ALTERNATIVES, COMRADE. ACQUIRE THE MOTHER TORTOISE.

why are box turtles out of the question?

BECAUSE THEY NEED A VARIED DIET, WITH 60% MEAT AND 40% VEGETABLE MATTER. OP IS UNABLE TO DO THAT.

HIS ONLY OPTION IS A RUSSIAN TORTOISE.

Are turtles easy enough to care for? I tend to kill little things with special needs, but man I love turtles.

Tortoises are very hardy animals, but they require pretty specific dietary needs. A lot of the stuff you find is pretty contradictory too, so it makes it a pain. I tend to trust this site the most:

but people have also recommended this site:

I'd go with russian. I had the same dilemma about a year ago and ended up buying a Red foot tortoise. I wanted something that would get a little bigger than a russian and had nice color.
There is so much more information out there about russians so it will be easier to take care of it. Find a GOOD breeder! Don't go with any you might find in a store. They could have parasites and are often kept in non idealistic conditions

Turtles are more susceptible to your failure as a keeper. Tortoises are desert animals that love being neglected and not fed for 100 years. I mean they are more tolerant of your failure.

I got 2 russians from different petco's; one had a lumpy shell indicative of poor feeding habits as a juvenile, the other had dry shell rot. One petco I've been to actually has tortoises with perfectly formed shells, and they looked pretty healthy. It all just depends on where you go I guess.

OP here.

Thanks for the help folks, I think I've made up my mind now.

Because I take care of them at work, I'd like to have something different.
