my cats are indoor, and we live on the top floor of an apartment block.

they've all somehow gotten fleas (I'm treating them with Advantage) but I'm wondering how the hell could they have gotten fleas living inside? Nobody I visit or that has visited has pets.

The fleas can sense cat blood and will seek out your cat.

Check for mice?

You might've carried them in as well.

Have you been in a theater, lately?

you can bring them in just as easaly as an animal can. but the thing of it is, as much as fleas like our blood, they 100,000,000,000,000 times more love your cats blood. not only that, they breed asexually, so u cald have had 1 on u and now you have a million. u may want to bomb your house to, once the advantage wears off, they will be right back on, and until then they will go for you. i had a year long issue w/ fleas, and now i am like the all holey knowing flea person, kinda lame

If your cats never go outside, then you probably brought them in. You need to take a good, long shower and scrub yourself raw (use lice shampoo if you want) and clean the shit out of your apartment. That's pretty much the only surefire way to completely rid yourself of the fuckers.

I was looking after a friends cat for a couple days and soon as he was gone, the fleas moved into my bed. My ankles were raw with the bites. I ended up using RAID Cockroach killer in the bedsheets, mattress and carpet every 2 weeks for 6 weeks, just to make sure that I got all the adults, pupae, and eggs. Just cause the average flea egg has an incubation time of 2 weeks, and I wanted to be rid of the little SOB's.
