Help me, /an/, I'm broke. ;_; My rats got in a fight and one has a pretty deep hole in her side. She's already in a cage alone, and I cleaned the wound out with saline and some antibiotic. Does this require a vet visit or should I just leave her the hell alone?

Reason. Now. Asshole. I've been on ten rat sites and they went both ways on wounds like this.

You might want to buy some antibiotics. The easiest way to get them is to check the fish area of a store. You want amoxicillin (125mg twice a day, IIRC?)

Other then that, keep the wound clean and follow the basic ideas you'd go with any sick creature.

In a pinch, you can buy amoxicillin from Amazon.com

Thanks. Topical, ingested straight or mixed in her water?

Ingested. You can mix it with cat food, peanut butter, ect. Half of a 250mg capsule, twice a day. That's a rough figure though.

Sorry my math is so rough, I'm used to dealing with people with nasty bites and sometimes a dog. That said, as long as you keep the wound clean and continue the antibiotics for 4 days after the wound is closed and there is no indication of infection. (To be safe, I'd just keep it on them for 10 days).

Why a vet? I know you love the rat but.. it's a rat. I doubt there are many vets that specialize in them

Luckily, I live in a university town. There are a few small animal clinics around here.

It's a goddamn rat, they have worse in the wild and live.

Oh yeah, let it suffer, others are doing worse, which makes the pain of this individual totally irrelevant!

Humans can live through plenty of screwed up shit, so let's just eschew hospitals altogether.

Your ratty should heal just fine, just keep on eye on the wound for any infections and as soon as you see anything, take it to the vet. Try to clean the wound when it needs it, but otherwise, getting some air to it is probably good! If it doesn't seem particularly bothered by it, it's probably not too bad.

Best topical solution. Holy shitte! Evan da broke-ass people like you and me can buy it! $30 plush shipping and it last for a long time. nustock.com I used this shit on me and my dogs for most all our problems, bites, wounds, rashes. Even got rid of the mange that we were supposed to get one of my dogs dipped for! It also works really fast. A day or two and the wounds start to just close themselves, and the best part is no infection! Kick-ass.
