I breed Crested Geckos (Rhacodactylus ciliatus).

Here's the female first

Do they eat insects?

Yep, crickets, wax/silkworms and others...although their mainstay diet is this powder called Crested Gecko Diet that contains everything they need and more, vitamins and all that good stuff.

I feed them crickets occasionally, maybe once every few weeks.

Now here's my male, in his Red glory

Are they perhaps named after spicy foods?

Nope. In fact I never named any of them :(

I figured not to name the babies because I'm going to sell them eventually and I don't want to get attached, but I probably could and should name the male and female.

Any ideas?

how much do these usu go for, OP? they look really cool btw.

>>145690

That can depend on many different factors including various color morphs and crest sizes...for example an "average" looking Crested Gecko that's a buckskin (plain brown/tan) morph will usually sell for somewhere between $40-$50...but when you get to Reds, Pinstripes, Cream, and exaggerated crests, the highest I've seen them go for is a little over $400.

But the average price you'll see on the "market" is usually in between $100-$140.

For example, a Crested with Dalmation spotting like this could fetch for well over $275.

I love vibrant reds like this but again, they're pretty expensive, in the $200-$300 range.

Posting more pics so Anon can see how vast the color morphs are for these guys.

This is a perfect example of the Cream trait; it's back is pretty much a solid shade of creamy white...although cream this perfect is almost impossible to find, it's usually split up into bands like the one hatchling on the blue lid I posted, and the pic in my next post.

A good example of the Pinstripe trait; the stripes running down the sides of the back.

This morph is usually called Blonde, or Dark Blonde, or Cream Blonde, due to the striking contrast between the dark brown and cream.

I bet you are thinking of a certain webcomic whos crested geckos also just had babies. :D

Do crested geckos make good pets for beginners, OP?
>> Anonymous
>>145835
For a beginner at all pets, or just a beginner at reptiles? Because reptiles of any sort are difficult pets.

A beginner at keeping reptiles.

WOW, THIS IS AMAZING.
i love this thing as much as a bearded dragon... expensive pet is expensive though.

I think they rival the Leopard Gecko for the best starter reptile. You don't even need to feed these guys live insects which helps in the long run. If you can find a nice docile and calm one for a good price then I would get one. Just make sure you do your reading before you buy anything.
