I have a chihuahua. He's my first dog ever, and as a person with no prior experience with dogs I have to say I absolutely LOVE my dog. I have had him for awhile now, but I was nervous about their negative stereotype being true. He has turned out to be the greatest thing that's ever happened to me (second to my s/o). I did a ton of research on the breed before hand though. Go to breeder websites or the AKC website and read everything you can find on chi's.
Make sure you train them well and practice every day. They have an attitude and mind or their own. My dog lives by NILIF (nothing in life is free). He wants something he has to perform a command (ie. sit, down, speak). They are fiercely loyal and an excellent guard dog. They do bark but you can limit it with training but it will never completely stop.
Taking them around other dogs can be scary if the dog is big and excitable, but you have to resist the urge to pick up your chi and baby them. If you spoil them you will have a demon on your hands. They will outsmart you easily. Mine is a total comedian and a clown. He never fails to crack me up. They are really wonderful, clever, very loving, funny little dogs. If can you stick to training, treat them like dogs (not babies), and can deal with some yappiness I would definitely recommend the breed.
Pic is my chi. (He's a long haired chi.) <3
