Hello /an/ i'm in a bit of a situation. I just came back from my dad's place a couple days ago and was away since last saturday. I own 4 parakeets, and my mom fed them and watered them while I was away.

She didn't notice it, but when I got home yesterday, one of them had a LARGE feces block attached to her bottom, and I realized taht she was trying to have an egg. I'm guessing she has been that way for a few days. I removed the feces block, and now it looks like she's trying to lay the egg, but she can't. She's struggling and i'm not sure what to do. Her bottom is a bit purple.

Any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED.

lol people take $10 animals to the vet?
>> Anonymous
>>267124
yes, because they value and care about the animal itself, not the price they paid for it.

OP here...

I called my local vets, and I can't afford to bring in my bird...

It's going to cost more than $120+, which I can't afford. Is there any home remedies?

Yeah, and just think about all the money people throw away on kids they have for free! Like lol what the hell is up with that.

beyond googling the problem, try calling all of the avian vets you can for advice. it doesn't seem like something that could be easily fixed at home, though...also, if you can't find another vet who will do it cheaper, ask if they will accept the money in monthly payments, or call an animal shelter to see if they can help you pay for it.

i'd say learn the normal parakeet egg-laying procedure. learn exactly what is supposed to happen and when. you'll be able to spot the abnormal much easier.

my googles for 'caring for parakeet egg' look promising

She's eggbound. That's what you would google. She can't shit/piss either so the situation is really bad for your bird.
For chickens they rec getting KY jelly, stick your finger up her Cloaca and try to lubricate as much as possible. If all else fails, break the egg, have a syringe with warm water and try to remove the broke egg and flush out the vent.
I imagine where you're at now you'd break the egg, remove what you can, and flush out her vent. You'll probably need a towel or rag to hold her still, preferably with help. I'd also look into antibiotics. I know there is some sold OTC here for birds. Not sure about elsewhere.
The purpling is a really bad sign. Bruising or too much pressure that it's blocking blood flow. So either take her to the vet or DIY.
Personally, from experience, having this for so long with the feces impacted, she has little chance either way. Home care might be less stressful in the long run.

Listen to this man.

The eggshell's already stiffened, there's nothing you can do except breaking the egg and trying to pull it out piecemeal.

wtf... I completely manged to miss the 'parakeet' part at first and thought the OP was talking about a cat because of the pic.
