I'll start out with my alligator lizard.

And this is my tiny desert night lizard. I've had it for about 4 years now. I'm pretty sure it's a female. I might get a few more to start a colony.

Here's my female crocodile skink (Tribolonotus gracilis). I've bought three males so far, but they all died fairly quick due to how badly the dealers cared for them before they got to me.

Here's a pic of my male peacock day gecko (Phelsuma quadriocellata). He escaped once for three months. My friend's mom's step son found him in their front yard. I had moved about an hour away and my friend mentioned to me that his mom found a green lizard not realizing that it could be my gecko. They were about to give it away when I had my friend call his mom asking about it. He wasn't in bad condition at all. I don't know how he survived since the habitat around there is way different from Madagascar and there are tons of cats and birds.

God i love day geckos... beautiful little bastards.

>>345621
I've always wanted a skink, but they're difficult to find around here. How are they as pets? My leopard gecko has been getting old in her years, and i've been looking for a new possible reptile to replace her when she leaves.

>>345636
How old is your leopard gecko?

Well crocodile skinks are rather difficult. They need lots of fresh water and humidity. They don't like to eat normal lizard food, only slow moving worms and snails and sometimes pill bugs. They are also very shy.

Fire skinks are better for beginners. Armadillo lizards are pretty easy too.

If you really want a crocodile skink then buy from Mark M. Lucas. Most places keep them in the wrong conditions for a long time before they get to you, but he doesn't.

She's about 9. Got some years left in her. Had a male with her a few years ago. Big huge fella.

I'm not to partial to any reptile. Skinks have always just been very interesting to me. I loved keeping leos, but i'd like to try something else... Any other suggestions for a newb? Snake or lizard.

Nice looking set up you've got there. Is that GS covered in moss?

Thanks. Yeah, it's the 'Pond and Stone' waterproof GS that's fish safe. It's a plaudarium, there's a few gallons of water in the bottom with a few guppies. It's worked out a lot better than I thought it would.

Here's a picture of my bearded dragon looking in the mirror beside my parakeet.

I also have a red-eared slider, but I don't have any pictures of him on this computer. Just imagine a huge black turtle with red stripes on his head.

It's actually my sister's bird, I'm just babysitting it. She did name it something to do with its yellow head, but she took a more positive direction and named the bird "Sunny."

do lizards make good pets? (for me a good pet is intelligent and self aware)
>> Anonymous
     File :-(, x)
>>345857

Tegus, Reticulated Pythons, large monitors, and iguanas might be relatively intelligent and self-aware around the level of a dog. Argentine tegus are your best bet since they're easy to tame, but they're 5 foot, 15-20 pound lizards. Not easy to care for and not easy to get bored with and give away.

They're worth it though. They have unprecedented intelligence for a reptile and aren't so fragile or skittish that you can't do anything with them like most lizards.
>> Anonymous
>>345857
What you ant of course is Komodo Dragons. This species of crocodile is extremely easy to tame and is much larger then an average dog. Indeed, an average dog is what the Komodo Dragon eats every half week.

These crocodiles can be trained to wear a saddle and you may ride them, although with more difficulty then riding an ostrich.

yea I just read some things about taking care of them and etc

I wouldn't mind the work if it wasn't for having to live in a warmer climate

>do lizards make good pets? (for me a good pet is intelligent and self aware)

...so you only consider apes, dolphins, elephants, corvids, and parrots to be "good pets"? Ooooookay.
>> Anonymous
>>345912

You ever heard of a heat lamp? Or air conditioning?

Anyway, they're from Argentina. Argentina doesn't exactly have constant temperatures. It has winters, and these lizards have adapted to it by hibernating in those winters. It's annoying for people like me who live in Arizona and don't want their lizard to hibernate, but if you have a significantly cool winter, your tegu could just hibernate if you want it to. Sometimes it'll do it automatically.

Some lizards are intelligent, though not entirely self-aware the way only people and a select few other animals are. My bearded dragon acts more like a puppy, though most of the snakes and some lizards I've had experience with conform to the notorious "cold" reptile concept. If you want an attentive, curious pet, beardies are awesome. My beardy watches people, likes to explore the room curiously, I can take him on walks down the block on a lizard-leash (only in summer), he closes his eyes when pet, when he eats a new food he cocks his head to the side and expresses his confusion, licks your fingers, and he likes to snuggle when he gets cold.

You can't train any lizard like you could a dog or a cat, but they're not by any means stupid or boring. They're all intelligent, just in different ways. If anything, my pet rabbit is by far the dumbest in the house, not the lizard.

I hate the whole hibernation thing. I caught my alligator lizard

in a mountainous region that gets cold in winter and now he's being all reclusive and not eating as much and just being a jerk in general.

What would you Herp guys recomend for someone who tends to kill small fragile animals? Frog, Toad, Lizard, Snake, Turtle, whatever is good. Although personally I'm a big fan of lizards and snakes. Mind you I want a fairly small guy who doesn't require to much time to take care of.

This is Grendel, my leo. I cleaned his cage today and he was getting very agitated in the small container I usually confine him in while I clean it, and I realized it was because the container was too small. I was about to grab a bigger one when he started growling and hissing and digging at the bottom of the container so I decided to let him out, thinking that maybe he'd be okay for a minute if I left him there with one of his hides to duck into while I got the larger container. Nope. He marched right off the edge of my dresser and fell underneath it. He wasn't hurt and I was able to grab him again but now he's restlessly crawling around the cage, inspecting it as if trying to find a way out. I gave him some mealworms to try and calm him down but he's ignoring them, climbing on his big piece of wood and occasionally gazing mournfully at the screen on top of his cage.

He's making me feel guilty :<
>> Anonymous
>>346318
So he's finally stopped trying to escape and has resorted to hiding. He ate one of the mealworms I gave him while I wasn't looking but he still looks tense. :(

Only four months old. Too young to determine sex yet.

He's calmed down now and is basking on top of the warm hide log but still has no interest in the other mealworm so i put it back in the fridge.

these things are so damn mean. Gowing up in the bay area as a young guy, I was always out catching lizards. If you could catch one of these without getting your hand tore up you were awesome. Once they chomp down, they chomp hard and don't let go easy.
