WTF GUYS?!?
>> G??????????????
i want a ferret. do they stink like ppl say they do?
>> Anonymous
>>166629

Yes. Ferrets stink for two reasons:

1) They are obligate carnivores, which means their natural diet is exclusively meat. Consequently their waste smells strongly.

2) Like all other members of the weasel family, they have a strong musk

Ya they stick very musky. Gonna need to have the cage in its own corner of the house. If you washed them enough to keep the musk off (pretty much daily) they get sick from lack of oil in fur so you just gotta love them as they are.

Not really, that's a common misconception. Bathing strips oils out of the coat, which triggers the body to produce more in order to compensate.

I have three ferrets. How much they stink depends on two main factors: diet and cage set up. If you feed them a high quality, by-product free food their poo will smell much less.

Also avoid flaky woodchips or Carefresh bedding, as oil-saturated bits gets scattered all over the place and are difficult to pick up. The best bedding is a simple pile of old clothes. Keep a few old bundles of tshirts or something (polar flece is great) on hand and change out the cage every few days.

Oh yeah, and use a large, square bottomed litter box with a 1/4 inch thick section of newspaper in it. It's cheaper and easier to change than traditional litters, so it's easy to toss out once or twice a day.

A simplistic cage helps, too. Less flooring/bars/wires translates to fewer surfaces for dirt, oils, and food particles to collect on. It gets washed away when you wash the cloth bedding.

;) Try my method, I really think you'll notice a difference

Don't bother with fancy multi-level cages. Ferrets are happiest when given lots of time outside the cage, so when they're put away they are content to just eat and sleep.

>>166652sorry i misread your post a bit. In any case the point is to bath them as little as possible.

This was a triumph. I'm making a note here: Huge success. It's hard to overstate my satisfaction. Aperture Science: We do what we must because we can. For the good of all of us - except the ones who are dead. But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying 'till you run out of cake. And the science gets done and you make a neat gun for the people who are still alive.
I'm not even angry. I'm being so sincere right now. Even though you broke my heart and killed me. And tore me to pieces. And threw every piece into a fire. AS they burned it hurt because I've been so happy for you. Now these points of data make a beautiful line. And we're out of Beta we're releasing on time. So I'm GLaD I got burned. Think of all the things we learned for the people who are still alive.
Go ahead and leave me. I think I prefer to stay inside. Maybe you'll find someone else to help you. Maybe Black Mesa. THAT WAS A JOKE, HAHA. FAT CHANCE. Anyway this cake is great. It's so delicious and moist. Look at me, still talking when there's science to do. When I look out there it makes me glad I'm not you. I've got experiments to run. There is research to be done on the people who are still alive.
Believe me I am still alive. I'm doing science and I'm still alive. I feel fantastic and I'm still alive. While you're dying I'll be still alive. And when you're dead I'll be still alive. Still alive. Still alive.

I have 5 Ferrets. As long as you scoop their litter boxes daily, and give them a bath monthly, they won't stink.

ferrets do not need to kept in cages ever and should not be. they're not a gerbil, they're intelligent animals and being kept locked up will cause them to be underdeveloped mentally and physicaly.
on the other hand, niggers should be locked up

Ferets dont like cages they want to get out and run around constantly. However they are hard to littlebox train even in small cage theyll end up crapping in the closest corner. And dont belive the lies ferets stick no matter what you do. You just have to accept the must if people tell you differnt they lying or they already small as bad as a ferret.

I think it is more a case of ferret owners becoming so accustomed to a baseline musky odor they simply don't notice it.

In all ferret owners' homes I know there have been this slight but distinct ferrety smell everywhere. Nothing utterly distracting or intolerable, but surely noticable.
>> Anonymous
>>166926

I've only met one ferret owner whose house did not have that "musky" odour. She had three of the little bastards, but put baby powder on them religiously, several times a day. They were practically odour-free... but it's way too much work for your average (read: 99% of) ferret owner.

I have two ferrets. Im not going to lie, yes they can stink if not taken care of properly. Just make sure you keep the litter ban cleaned out. Much like a cats litter pan. I also do the baby powder thing, but only once or twice a day. It really isnt that big of deal.

no, you are inept
probably you ferrets were taken from their mother at too young an age as well and then place in your idiotic care. properly raised ferrets use a litterbox as effectively as any cat.

I bathe my pretty Fehrago once a week, no powder. She sneezes more from the dust she kicks up running around the room than from her bedding. She has the Carefresh bedding in her cage.

As for the smell, I knew she was gonna have some odor when I got her. It's just so slight (to me) that I don't even notice it.

Litterbox training? What training? Ferrets are latrine animals-- that means that they will not poop where they sleep. Their wild anscestors and cousins would poop in a corner for two reasons-- one, because it was a place usually away from the sleeping quarters of the den, and two, because nothing can sneak up on you when your back is in a corner.

Would it be alright to, instead of having a cage, let them live in a pen like the one in the picture?
>> Anonymous
sure all the better, but a cage, at the very least for eating drinking and sleeping when you are asleep or away is still safer.
>> Taboo Fetish !mEXZ86LiuA
>>167279
Mine all climb out when I put them in the pen for exercise. And it's 4 feet high!

i pity the ferrets who live with the people in this thread. mine live in my three story house and never get shut in a cage unless we're going for a ride in the car. there is one litterbox on each floor, but they frequently run up two flights of stairs to use the favorite one. i could teach you, but i'd have to charge

Why are assuming mine live in their cage? They have one, but they aren't required to be in it - they seem to be moar comfortable sleeping in it though. I put them in the pen or their cage when they're not supervised, though, for their protection.

>>167322
those are marshal farms ferrets
i can tell from the picture and from having seen quite a few
how much do they weigh?
>> Anonymous
>>167279
I love my pen. I used to keep them in a giant multi-level set up, but this is far better. It's ridiculously easy to clean (replace the bedding and sweep the floor)which keeps odor to a minimum. They can't escape as long as there's nothing in the cage for them to boost themselves up on. The pen provides a ton of floor space, comfortable bedding, and plenty of places to borrow in. There's a pile of toys as well, but it's not visible in the picture.

>>167316
Fuck you, there's no reason to imply that my ferrets aren't given enough exercise. These guys get anywhere from 3 to 6 hours of excecise a day, and have at least two huge rooms to explore, often the whole house.

I have no idea, all 5 of them were rescues. Ferrets are REALLY popular here where I am, and no one wanted these guys because one was sick recovering from a tumor (she's since passed away), and the others are older. So I took them, knowing at least they'd have a good home with me.
I do have them vet checked and all are healthy and a normal weight. I do have trouble with the youngest being a bit skinny though.
