hi /an/

I took in a stray cat last night that was yowling outside my window at 1am. It's very cute and affectionate, not an aggressive temperament at all. However my two cats seemed to hate it instantly. They're constantly growling, hissing and swiping at the new guy, and it sounds quite vicious at times. The new cat is male, my two are female and they're all about 4 months old. Should I be worried they're going to kill each other when I'm not home? How long does it take in /an/'s experience for cats to get used to an intruder?

4 months old? They won't be able to do him much harm. You should be more worried about him attacking but since he's the "intruder" he might be too shy to do so.
As for getting used to each other it depends on their personality. Since they're still small you have a chance for them to get along quick with the new cat. Give them a few days. If you're worried then put them in separate rooms when you're not around but spend as much time as you can with all of them in the same place.

Anyway, props to you for picking up a stray. Just remember to get him a vet check up, you don't want him to bring any diseases/parasites he might have to the other cats.

Yeah I'm going to on the weekend. I live in Australia so there's not too many endemic diseases here, but they all need to be neutered at the very least.

I suppose it's a good sign that he's not aggressive at all. He just lays down and sometimes hisses when the other cats are being little bitches

this kitty looks exactly like my baby when we found her. she's ded now, there was nothing we or the vet could do and i baww all the time. i think she'll always fight with your cats and you should give up and bring her to me for real, ok?

:( I'm sorry you lost your cat. I've had kitties all my life and it's always tragic

How long has he been with you? If it's been less than say, a month, it's quite likely that your own cats still need to adjust to him and will accept him given time. Don't separate them. The fact that he's not fighting back is good, I think.

We only took him in less than 48 hours ago. They're making pretty good progress actually. I don't expect them to be best friends but at least they're not trying to claw his face off anymore.

He's eating like a foodbeast. i guess whoever had him before didn't look after him too well, so starved for affection

He's a tiny cute little thing - and sounds/looks overall like an awesome cat. After 48 hours if the other cats are willing to coexist with him, I'd say everything is going to be fine.

Kudos on taking in a stray, I get the impression he'll be very happy. :)

Pic is not OP, fyi, but he does live here. And the little guy seems to love him.

unrelated story, one of the female cats just fell in the toilet while trying to drink from it. Do they outgrow this kind of stupidity

Thankfully, only a little. You've got plenty of laughs yet to get out of your cats.

Yess, yesss.. indeed.

anyway, cute new cat is cute. like previous anons said it'll totally come down to your individual cats - we have four and they're actually all pretty standoffish towards each other, despite the fact that two are siblings, and two grew up together.. along with always having the older brother and sister around at all times.. but i don't think that's really typical. best of luck.
