Is it actually possible to discipline a cat? How on earth do you get through to them and discourage bad behaviour?
>> Anonymous
You can't. Cats overall, don't care about humans, so rules behaviour, etc... they don't rly care...... UNTIL THEY'RE FUCKING HUNGRY.

Take the truth of it.
>> Anonymous
Let a dog raise it with her puppies.
>> Anonymous
No.
You don't.

You deal with it.

The only moment a cat care, as said, is when he's hungry. And he cares as long as he thinks you'll feed him.

These people are right, don't give the cat food if you want to discipline it. Or better yet, put it in a submissive posture, it worked for me.

I tried the food thing, but the only thing i got was a cat making huge mess in the kitchen.

Put it in a cage type thing for five minutes. My girlfriend's dad uses a clothes hamper with something ontop.

What exactly do you want to stop it from doing?
>> Anonymous
how do i get my cat to eat less?
she is getting fat but when i do not feed her all the time she cries always and wakes me up early.

>>238551
Make her play with a laser attached to her neck. Also, don't respond to such behavior, it only reinforces it. Buy $.80 ear plugs (That you can sleep in) for night.

You might want to lock her away too to make sure she doesn't jump on your chest at night.

i always get my cats with a squirt bottle.
it doesn't stop them completely, but once they see it they usually take off.

same here. Stops him meowing at night, cats fkin HATE water.

The good thing about the spray bottle technique is that it's instantaneous. The moment they misbehave they get a negative consequence. Also, unless your cat is hella smart he/she won't realize it's you doing it.

One note about the bottle and disciplining in general. Unless you're doing the disciplining while they're misbehaving they're not going to connect the negative feedback to the inappropriate action. Worse yet they'll just think the squirt bottle/tap on the nose/whatever is arbitrary and will make it LESS effective when you DO squirt them at the right time. They'll just think "damn I keep getting wet" instead of "when I climb on the counter I keep getting wet" which is what you want.

Peace out OP

The canned air duster you use on your computer makes a good substitute for the water squirt.
More noise, less wet.
When my kitty gets all "meowmeowmeowmeow", she stops when I squirt her furry backside with the air.
Plus it's amusing

>>238580

Also do this in serious situations.
Only squirt bottles and deos work against a cat's instinct.
>> Anonymous
>>239078
Also, when they're being really dick-headed, you can turn the can upside down and spray the little bastards with the cold air that comes out. Aim for the asshole.

>>239079
The ear flick is pretty good too, it's less instantaneous than water but if you can't find your squirt bottle.

>>238530
what every other anon in here has said: spray bottle of water

It doesn't harm them at all but they fucking hate it and learn quickly.
>> Anonymous
hissing at them, or squirt bottle will do it. Mine listen better to the hiss, and the squirt bottle is rarely needed.

Same way you would do it PROPERLY with a dog: think in cat logic as to what would make doing something so bad it's not worth it. Like putting double-sided sticky tape over the area of the couch the cat scratches.

OP here, anyone got any ideas about dealing with a situation where you return home and the cat has misbehaved while you were away?
>> Anonymous
Not that I know of... though taking prevenative measures can help. If Kitteh goes on the couch or digs in your plants you could get some cat scat pads. They're originally meant for gardens but I know people who toss some on the couch and kitchen counters when they leave the house. Works on dogs too.

http://www.catscat.com.au/

They're plastic "spikes" that make the cat not want to sit on/walk on a certain area. Since it's an avoidance device, it's not meant to hurt the kittehs just make a it a nuisance for them to go where there are the cat scats.

Also if you want to go really high tech I ran into this website ~~> http://www.deteracat.co.uk/ While trying to find the info on the cat scat stuff. One device is a motion sensor that sprays water. Meant for a garden but if you don't have hardwood that'll get ruined by getting a little wet now and then it could be cool to try out.

Generally, if you have been previously punishing the cat for that particular misbehaviour, the cat WILL know that it has done something wrong, and will show it. Act generally angry and pissed off and deny them space for the evening (eg lock them up in a shower cubicle).

OP here. I came home today, let the cat in, it is filthy AGAIN. It has been fighting AGAIN. Ive squirted some water at it and put it in its box and it wont get any dinner tonight, but I'm just at a loss how to get the damn thing to behave. Bump one last time for any ideas.

Unfortunately squirting it *After* it's been fighting won't help. And no dinner isn't either. The cat doesn't know why you're doing that, so at that point discipline is going to actually cause more harm than good (see>>239014)

Fights are something that happen when cats have overlapping territories. And since this is presumably happening when you're not home you can't break up the fight with a squirt bottle while they're going at it. You may just have to keep your kitty inside during the day, or whenever he's been getting into fights. the wounds he'll get from fighting can get easily infected (kitty mouths are dirty) so you'll be doing him and his health a world of good if you keep him indoors during his high-risk times of day for fights.

My cats like to get wet. The one sits in the shower in the morning and waits to get the water turned on it.

Frostbite occurs when tissues are exposed to extreme cold for a prolonged amount of time so that constricted blood vessels reduce flow and the tissue freezes.

Spraying a cat with a blast of cold air isn't going to give its buttcheeks frostbite.

I am actually having disciplinary issues with one of my cats, and traditional methods have only turned scratching our rug into a game. First it was the water bottle, he learned to watch for it, now whenever I make a sudden hand motion while he's doing the naughty deed he bolts, hides behind the chase lounge, and l looks at me all googly eyed. Next, I tried flicking his ear, but he's only gotten quicker and more devious. He ignores the scent of citrus, and he likes divebombing our other cat until he yowls and hisses, which is problematic because the other one never does anything wrong and responded to discipline perfectly.

Cats have personalities, very distinct ones, and I am struggling to deal with Dense Cat #1.
>> Anonymous
If it bites, don't react in any way. Apparently cats get high from reactions when they bite, they get off on the sensation of biting so if you pull away it's just what they like.

Cats a the real rulers of earth, they have enslaved the "inteligent" hair-less ape. They don't have to fight to survive, they just sleep, eat and sometime get on your lap to get a massage.

True rulers of Earth, worshiped as gods !

If ear-flicking and squirting don't work, how about a mild RC shock collar?

Obviously try it out yourself, you don't want your cat going into convulsions. But its a good deterrent if you're on the scene when discipline is necessary but the cat won't let you get close enough to do so.

Chase it and stick it in a clothes bin until it cries to get out. Then wait for the crying to stop and take it out.

That worked for me, me and my cat are really happy now.
