Me, if I see a picture of a human pulped by a car it definitely affects me more than seeing an animal pulped by a car. Accidents happen, and no one's really to blame. Usually driver in the first case, not so much in the second (I killed a cat with my car once, stupid thing swerved to get hit by me despite my attempt to avoid it by trying to swing wide - if it was trying to commit suicide it couldn't have managed it better).
Flat-out cruelty is disturbing no matter what it's perpetrated on. To me it's much more disturbing when it's against children or innocent people (for example, civilians killed in terrorist attacks or captured and beheaded for propaganda videos). I'll kill pests as humanely as I can, but I get a bit queasy thinking about torturing anything for no good reason.
