Sweet jesus. Are octopuses really this smart? That looks like a pretty secure tank to me, and it still managed to sneak out of a crack.
>> FatOldBenzGuy
yes, their eyes are the one part that can't be shrunk.
So anything smaller than their eyes and they will fit through.

they're the smartest invertbrae.

I was watching a program one time. Some aquarium keeper was talking about how fish were coming up missing from a tank. After a while they figured out an octopus was climbing out of its tank, crawling along, going into the other tank, eating the fish, then going back to its own tank.

Newquay? I've seen that Octopus once, it is really huge, though it stayed rolled up in a corner when i was there. Its legs were almost as thick as mine...
They had some some toys in there, apart from screw top glasses they also have a plexiglass "safe", where it has to turn a wheel and use a lever to open it.

An octopus is smarter than a dog, but they only live a couple of years before they go into senescence and die. They are quite crafty, and can learn all sorts of stuff.

I saw something on TV about this octopus that would sneak out of it's tank at night to eat fish, shrimp and crabs from other tanks, then go back to it's own tank.

How do you measure intelligence?

It is true that they can plan their actions and can open cans for example.

'Octopuses are characterized by their eight arms (not tentacles), usually bearing suction cups.'

'The phylum mollusca includes many species with muscular hydrostats in the form of tentacles and arms (octopuses do not have tentacles: they have arms). Tentacles are longer than arms and usually have suckers at their tips only. Squid and cuttlefish have eight arms like octopuses, and also two tentacles, which is one good way to distinguish squid from octopuses.'

They have put their meals into jars. The octopus has to unscrew the jar to get his catch.

In West Philadelphia, Will's mom was wondering why every night he seemed to disappear from the playground. After finally setting up some cameras, she found out that some of the guys that were up to no good someone had introduced to the city routinely escaped, and were fighting and beating Will up at night. They're smart, but I read somewhere that their memory is very bad. You can train them to do stuff, but you have to teach it again every day.

Fascinating animals for sure.
