OK, I can tell you the background behind that picture, because I was there. The picture was taken in Canberra, Australia, January 2003(?), during a terrible bushfire that had rushed up ten kilometres in ten days from the southwest and struck at the city of over 500,000 inhabitants. Four people died, and hundreds of houses were damaged or destroyed.
Canberra is the national capital of Australia. To imagine the effect, imagine if the skies over Washington DC were blotted out by thick brown smoke, eventually making mid-afternoon into night. That's how it was for Canberra.
