My brother tried to get the gerbil out of the cage by his tail and this happened.

Advice?

geesus, i'd imagine that's like having your fingernail ripped off your fingers...

The exposed tail bit somewhat resembles a raw fish with the bones still in, but it's red like blood. I picked up the tail sleeve and it seems to be the skin.

Should I wash it? Find a bandage? Kill it and exchange it for a new one while I'm still under Petco's 15-day-guarantee?

1) Never let your brother near the gerbil again
2) Don't draw that face ever again. I lol'd.

FIRST OFF! Thread made me lol!!!
SECONDLY!! I had a similar situation where one of my pet gerbils ripped the other's "tail sleeve" off. Unfortunately there is nothing you can do. The gerbil with the missing "tail sleeve" will not regrow the skin or fur back and the exposed tail will eventually fall off.

My best advice is to take it to the vet if you do not want to risk it being injured further or infected during the process where the tail rots off.

Thanks for advice. I'll try to keep it clean.

I thought about putting the tailsleeve in my bro's breakfast tomorrow, but he already feels really bad about all this. Plus he's an aspy :(

OP here again. This can now be a cute gerbil pictures thread.

(not mine but similar)

what the fuck is an aspy? some kind of retard? if so beat his ass

Asperger's. His grandpa had it too and it was beaten out of him. He didn't really find it all that pleasant :(

don't joke about that, my dad was killed by aspys.

Also, it raped my mom.

Yeah you'd probably be better off just throwing the tail out. Try not to handle the tail too much as I am quite sure it hurts a lot. Just make sure to pay close attention to it until it falls off. If your gerbil seems to become ill or the area becomes infects I advise a vet.

The technical term is degloving and its common in small animals like gerbils and rats (which is why I shudder when people pick them up by their tails). To avoid any infection take it to a vet as the remaining tail will most likely need to be amputated.

tl;dr vet motherfucker, do you have one?

Btw, can you let me see your gerbil for a second?

Your brother is so retarded he grabs an animal by its tail?

Here's an idea, don't let anyone that fucked up in the head near your animals.
>> Anonymous !4X8vLLNDE2
My older cousin snapped off half the tail of my little cousin's gerbil. Gerbil was fine, but didn't have part of it's tail skinned.
>> Anonymous
>>122466

This happened to me when I was little. First off, tell your brother to never, ever grab any animal WHATSOEVER by its tail. Maybe he's little, and that's cool, good thing this happened to a gerbil which has that defense mechanism. Good time to learn the lesson, I know that's when I learned it.

Second, the tail is an open would. It can easily get infected since, you know, gerbils piss everywhere and whatnot. If you want to keep it, take it to the vet. As far as my gerbil's case, they gave me a cream for the tail and some antibiotics with an eye dropper to give them to him. He chewed on the dropper but at least he took the meds.

The tail won't grow back, ever. A kind of skin will form over it, but it's pretty transparent, so it'll just look red and a little puffy. Some hairs may start growing but they'll never grow enough to really cover it up again. What to do from there's up to you.

tl;dr version, teach your brother to wise up and take it to the vet if you want to keep it.

listen to this man. Rip off its claws one by one in order to take its mind off of the sad state of its tail.
>> Anonymous
actually, holding a rat or a mouse by it's tail is fine.. only by the base of the tail though.
Gerbils however don't have that toughened skin there.
Take it to the vet. If your parents say no.
Take it to a shelter or a petstore that has some vet affiliation.
>> Anonymous
CAN THE TAIL SKIN BE REATTACHED, taking it into a vet, anesthesia however expensive, and for the tail to be mended back on, would it heal back over the exposed area?
>> Anonymous
>>122825

No, it can't be reattached. The destroyed piece of the tail will have to be amputated, and the gerbil will be on antibiotics to prevent infection. In following with what someone else said, if your parents don't want to take him to the vet, please give him to someone else. I'm not blaming you, but people who can't/won't take their animals to the vet when they are sick or injured don't need pets.
>> Anonymous
slide it back on and use some cyanoacrylate glue (crazyglue) to bind it. Give the litter fucker antibiotics. By the time you read this, it will be too late to do that. Dock the tail, or just let it scar over.

happened to a rat of mine. vet had to cut tip of the tail off.
>> Anonymous
I saw the exact thing happen to a dog on animal planet emergency vets. But yeah, your gerbil's tail got skinned alive. The tail bit will have to be removed to prevent infection. even if it was treated with medication and what not, it'd just turn into a big solid scar.
>> Anonymous
The skin on the tail of a gerbil is very fragile. Without the skin, it's just exposed nerves and bone and etc. Go get the exposed tail amputated and close up the remaining skin.

"Even when the tail detaches by itself, what is often left is exposed bone (and nerve!) which can be very painful to the animal and prone to infection. There are two schools of thought on this amongst gerbil owners - that self-amputation of the tail is "no big deal" and will heal naturally and without interference. These gerbil owners have never even heard of an amputated tail becoming infected. The other school of thought is that "I wouldn't want my bone exposed so I don't want my gerbil in that condition".

However, it doesn't sound like your gerbil's tail is going to amputate on its own anyway, and like I said this is not necessarily trouble free in any case. Therefore, you need to take him to the vet, who will probably amputate the injured area and cover the end with skin by suturing."
>> Anonymous
And some advice from UC Davis for picking up a gerbil:

"Grasp’s Gerbil’s tail firmly at the base. Grasping the tip of the tail will result in “tail slipping” and degloving of the tail skin. Lift and immediately cradle in your other hand. Gerbils do not like to be held up side down and will struggle violently when not immediately supported."

OP Here. I checked on it again today. The little exposed bit turned black and I guess fell off (sort of like an umbilical cord, if you've ever seen that). I'm gonna keep an eye on it but so far he seems okay. He doesn't even run away from my hands or anything like that.

No, just the one is fine.
>> Anonymous
Never hold the tail anywhere from the middle to the tip. What occurred is that your brother held it there and your gerbil struggled with a twisting motion.

Next time, hold it by the base of the tail.
>> maggiekarp
To the folks who told me to go to the vet and get stuff done...

The nearest vet that will even look at rodents this size is an hour's drive away, and we're not going to spend $100 bucks on a $10 rat, my Mom says. Especially not to just put them to sleep, which our cats can do just fine if need be.

She.... also says that, if y'all consider us bad pet owners, "At least we're not training them for the gerbil fights."

Never pick a gerbil up by the tail. Period. When the tail breaks, it will fall off. It doesn't heal like other rodents, it just dies and falls off. So don't do it, even by the base. Never EVER pick up a gerbil by the tail. Stop being a pussy and just grab the damn thing.

Amputate the part of the tail without skin before it causes bad infection (and pains him/her more).

That happened to my gerbil too. Well, many moons ago ! :) A dog bit his tail and that "sleeve thing" came right off leaving just the bone. The Bone fell off a few weeks later and the gerbil looked as it had before, just with a shorter tail.
