heartworms Anonymous
my dog has heartworms. she is 10 years old.
shows no visible signs of heartworms. vet said she had 2 to 3 years left in her.
we got her some revolution medicine (like frontline, but prevents heartworms). vet said it would also kill the heartworms, but slowly.

is there anything else we can do except give her the shot (where she cannot run for 6 weeks)?

pic related, though several years old.

Dont use the Revolution. That can kill her instantly because it kills the heartworms rapidly and that can cause your dog to go into cardiac shock. Your best bet is going to be the ivermectin shots because those kills the heartworms after three injections. It will help the longevity of your animal also. But you have to remember heartworms are pretty deadly. I dont know why your vet would say that heartworm preventative after a positive heartworm test. I mean just about everyone knows it.

Umm 12 or 13 years is a pretty good lifetime for a medium size dog. What causes you to believe she would live longer than that anyways.

that's pretty morbid. I dont think that lifespan is really the issue here anyway. As for medium size dogs, some can live up to 15-17 years if kept up right. But I think she was looking for more of an answer to the heartworms rather than how to keep her animal living longer.

I work at a vet, and the shots are the only thing that can effectively help.

Revolution *prevents* heartworms. It doesn't kill them.

It's worth your dog not running for six weeks to have her treated properly.
