Why is it that cats seem to enjoy chewing on plastic? Is it bad for them? And how can I make him stop?

Or if the answer to the first question is "they don't", is my cat stupid?

weve had this conversation before, and i think its a combination of the feel, the noise and the possibility that the plastic can contain animal fats.my cat loves to do this, the crunchier the noise the better!

Cats love to sniff sticks. They'll keep snifing the same stick like it's a different stick.

Well uh, that doesn't really explain why he wraps his jaw around his litterbox edge/my laundry basket edge and just keeps chewing away for minutes on end.

No comment, seeing as how I don't own a cat, but that's a lovely cat.

My cat used to lick the faces of Kodak pictures. He was silly.

Mine LOVES film negatives. If I have one in a drawer, he'll try to fish it out. It's something about the chemicals on them thats attractive to their noses/tongues. Sometimes he will chew on the thin plastic covering a bouquet of flowers or something that had been shrink-wrapped too.

my cat loves licking plastic bags, sometimes she'll get too excited and bite the thing.. but the same goes with someone petting her. something to do with some kind of stuff they coat the bags in, non-toxic.. just tastes good I guess

One of my cats loves biting on flimsy plastic sleeves, and paper.

My cat is scared to death of plastic bags. Not so much the bags, but the ruffling noise they make. whenever I open one up, he goes running away so fast.

my cat loves playing with plastic bags but i think it has more to do with how much i hate the sound.

My cat chews on anything that makes noise. >< Plastic bags, cardboard, magazines..etc. It gets really annoying because you have to chase him away from everything..lol

It's weird, my cat hates the sound of plastic bags. He'll go racing across the room and down the stairs if he hears one. But if you leave it on the ground he'll step on it and chew on it to his heart's desire, crinkling it all he wants.

There ARE cat and dog toys made of plastic they can play around with and chew on. Healthier than chewing on grocery bags and litter boxes.
Yuck.

i asked my vet once and he told me that many plastic products are made with extracts of fish oils. he said he doesn't know if it even registers to cats, but it's a theory.

my cat likes to get inside plastic bags and pretend like she's smart by clawing her way out. my reward is having to clean up tiny shreds of plastic bag all over the place.

If my cat pulled that on me, I would get its face and rub it in the plastic bag shreds and yell "Bad! Bad Cat!" then give it a swift punt to its groin. That'll learn a cat.
