hippo

>>A group of four-footed mammals that flourished worldwide for 40 million years and then died out in the ice ages is the missing link between the whale and its not-so-obvious nearest relative, the hippopotamus.
The conclusion by University of California, Berkeley, post-doctoral fellow Jean-Renaud Boisserie and his French colleagues finally puts to rest the long-standing notion that the hippo is actually related to the pig or to its close relative, the South American peccary. In doing so, the finding reconciles the fossil record with the 20-year-old claim that molecular evidence points to the whale as the closest relative of the hippo.

OP is a faggot. Cows were once artiodactyls and artiodactyl is simply a generalisation.

What are you going to argue? Dolphins are their closest relative?
>> Anonymous
>>296035
Er cows are artiodactyls and whales were once artiodactyls

You're telling me a whale is closer related to a hippo than to its own mother.
>> Anonymous
>>296039
Species wise, not blood!
>> Anonymous
>>296045

Its own mother is likely the same species. You can't get any closer, species-wise.

Hey OP, orcas are dolphins, not whales.

whales are the wolves of the oceans. esp those orca fuckers.
>> Anonymous
>>296449
most whales are peaceful plankton feeders, eating anything microscopic in their paths....just like a wolf huh?
Also orcas are not whales
>> Anonymous
>>296450
Oh my god who fucking cares they're all cetaceans.
>> Anonymous
I thought it was the Hippo? I could be wrong though, I know they were recently discovered to have very close relations and it's even believed their ancestor was traced back to a sort of water..pig..thingy I can't honestly remember the name and am far to lazy to look it up.

so is that why orcas are also known as "killer WHALES"? there are also more species of smaller toothed whales then there are baleen whales. even our beloved bottle nose dolphin has been seen killing their own babies and porpoises for unknown reasons.
>> Anonymous
The whale is the closest living relative of the hippopotamus, NOT VICE-VERSA. Cetaceans are more closely related to other cetaceans than they are to hippopotamus.
>> Anonymous
>>296614
It's a size matter. Orcas are dolphins, but bigger, thus people call them whales.
>> Anonymous
>>296620
The common name for the suborder that dolphins and porpoises are members of, along with beaked and sperm whales, is TOOTHED WHALES.
>> Anonymous
>>296622
Nomenclature is arbitrary.

>> Anonymous
>>296637
Don't think your opinion is more important than humanity's achievements in phylogenetics.
People worked many centuries and made countless observations and analyses to investigate the connections in life, how dare you say that it's arbitrary?

Orcas are classified as toothed whales, but not Dolphins, making Dolphins or other toothed whales their closest living relatives.
OP only asked about Killer whales, making it possible for others to pick every species of the suborder as a relative.

aren't whales and dolfins really cows that waded deep into the ocean and grew gales? like a snorkel attached to a cow, and then they lost the furr and became whales

Holy fuck at the amount of stupid in this thread. Can any of you read outside of 4chan? Go actually read a book, you will see that orcas are not whales, but are dolphins. Glad to see that all of you think you're such scientists whose mere opinions can change science. Sorry, but that's not how it works. Go back to your imaginary fatass in the sky that makes you think the world just magically appeared only a few thousand years ago.
