Hello everyone. My name is Hazel. My mommy and daddy can't decide whether or not to declaw me. Our landlord says I have to be declawed when I'm old enough, but what he doesn't know won't kill me right? Anyone with pros and cons for declawing?
>> Anonymous
pros: none, it's stupid, if you can teach a child to not shit itself you can teach a cat to not claw things.

Your' landlord is a stupid asshole who doesn't know shit, when he was a kid did his mom cut his hands off to keep him from breaking her stuff?

Con
Mutilation, people rage
Cat is not well-suited for outdoors
You may want to occasionally trim their claws [I do]

Pro
Less scratches [don't piss off your cat, simple]
Furniture? Cats can be trained, believe it or not.

There are also those wax claw-sleeve things as alternatives. I don't know much about them...

That was my argument actually. I know the procedure for declawing a cat cuts off like half of their fingers so I find in inhumane. My hubby however thinks we should get it done anyways cause he always has in the past with his parents' cats

That is a dumb reason, good thing that shit is verboten where I live.

Animals are things.

Do what you will.

It seems to be consensus that I not declaw her and I wholly agree. Now comes the hard part of convincing the husband. Any websites that would give me pointers on how to train her not to claw or scratch stuff?

I just used my voice. A loud "HEY!!" usually let's them know they're doing wrong.

Of course, a water pistol works too.

And then there are those repellent sprays I think are shit.

i used a spray on my bed and it seems to work, you just havta keep up on it. use it like twice a day for a week or two then reapply every other day until they just learn

Would maybe that bitter apple spray work? I remember when we had my doggie we used that to keep her from chewing on her foot after surgery

Do you think your landlord cares enough to check? Is your landlord anal about it? If so you better do it because the landlord could A) make you get rid of the pet or B) kick you out.

However, if the landlord isn't likely to check or isn't anal about it then you'll be fine and worse case scenario is they do check one day and make you get the cat declawed or get rid of the cat/move to another place.

there are no pros to declawing. If your landlord tries to force you to amputate your cat's toes (for that is really what the procedure entails, the removal of not only the claw, but all the meat and bone of the first joint of each digit), I'd look for another place to live. There is no reason to mutilate a cat via declawing.

Get her used to getting her claws trimmed, or put those caps on them.

Scratching posts rubbed with catnip are more enticing to claw than furniture as well. Reward her for clawing the post, and voila, trained cat.

Is the apartment furnished or is it all your own stuff? I don't understand why your landlord cares. He should just have you pay a deposit to replace any damage to property it might do.

declawing is OK? Since when is elective digital amputation OK? Are you aware that Washington State University did a study revealing that more than 70% of all declawed cats had lasting ill effect from this mutilation?

I have never seen a real life example of a cat being negatively effected by declawing. My cat is declawed, my dad's cats are declawed, my mom had a declawed cat when I was a kid, all perfectly healthy and happy.

and you are educated in feline anatomy and physiology? You can recognize the signs of early onset arthritis in the affected limbs, forelimbs especially? You honestly believe that three tendons and ligaments vital to full function of the entire limb can be severed, and the cat will be perfectly fine? You think that an animal can walk on amputated stumps and scar tissue and not suffer? You'd be wrong.

Declawing is outlawed in almost every civilized country save for the US. Hell, third world countries have banned the practice. Why do you think that is? Because it's proven barbaric and inhumane.

One of my cats still babies one of his front paws when he walks and it's been years since he had it done.

was that directed to me? Nothing makes me the boss... but three degrees and countless certifications in Animal Science make me something of an authority, as does more than 20 years hands-on experience in veterinary medicine.

so, "digit" declawing is mutilation?
My cat has been declawed (at 6 months piror to birth) and is ok with no problems.

>>298588
six months prior to birth, huh? Nice trick.

Many cats who are declawed can become extremely aggressive. Because you have taken away their number one defense mechanism, they usually resort to attacking you by biting. And because torties already have 'tortietude', she may not be that friendly after she recovers from her extremely painful surgery.

Maybe you should try some alternatives before resorting to a declaw? There are many methods that could help stop her from scratching.
