If you're not squeamish about feeding them, snakes are wonderful. Ball pythons, corn snakes, false coral snakes and boa constrictors are very friendly and low-maintenance, just have to feed them every two weeks or so, clean out the tank/cage the same amount, and keep their water filled. Heat and ventilation are the only main concerns.
I love having snakes, they wrap around your neck for the warmth and it feels like their hugging you. They're inquisitive too, and when warm they're pretty active. Just make sure you get a large home for them, snakes do need some room, especially the constrictors.
