Check out the giant redwoods! I swear those things just make you feel bizarre. Climb on a hill, look down at the forest and they look just like any other trees... except the people are freaking tiny!! Makes you feel like you're looking at some abstract painting it just doesn't sit well with reality somehow, least that's how I felt.
Just hiking up a mountain trail for an hour or two, getting up high enough to look down the valley is enough to fill your being with a good enough feeling for you to remember. I went as a kid there maybe 3 times, never knew what the adults meant when they said "isnt' that gorgeous?" "Beautiful Mountains" "So peaceful", I was instead thinking "Why are we still here?" and I still felt that way when I looked at the big big valley. Look around & get lost there, its fun. On a side note, do remember Los Angeles is only a small part of California and doesn't mean the rest of the state is just like that one city.
Never saw a bear there or a mountain lion try to get me, but tons of squirrels will "beg" for food. Don't leave any food in your car tho, I hear the bears will literally use your car door's handle or break through the glass to jack you.
