The reason clickers often work better than voice is that it's hard to say the same command word in exactly the same way every time. Clickers always sound the same, and it's a quick short sharp noise, which helps make sure the dog associates the sound with *exactly* the behavior you want them to.
But what's more important than the clicker itself is the basic principle of positive reinforcement it's based on. I'm not saying punishment's always bad, and sometimes it's necessary - but you can usually get more done with clicker-style reinforcement, and with reinforcement you're less likely to fuck it up and create more behavior problems.
