/an/ I need your help.

My cat, Mr.T, has been getting of a habit of going outside whenever the door opens, and it pisses me off for the following reasons.

1. I have to hear him scratching at the window panes when he doesn't know how to get back in the house
2. I'm worried that he'll get lost, injured, killed, eaten, etc. I would bawl for years because I've had him since he was less than a week old.

Anyone have an apparatuses that can prevent him from doing this?

Pic related: It's Mr. T in a frying pan

inb4 close the door

Don't let cats outside. There's a reason indoor cats live longer.

Scare him away from the door, bang on the door before you open it.

It's really hard to keep a cat inside when they want to go outside. We adopted a feral cat and it was impossible to keep him inside the house... just impossible.

You can try one of those child-gates, but that might not exactly fit around the front door... they're really built for doors within a house but perhaps you can try.
Or, try yelling or screaming or shaking something loud (a can with pennies in it works wonders) when he runs at the door. This will show him a negative response for his action.

Try a small training session, hold the door open and when he runs for it, shake the penny can. Try this a few times, and he if keeps running for the door, then stop for the day. If when you open the door, he does not run for it, offer him something he loves. Fresh tuna or some sort of snack to reward him.
