fuck anime. alchemy is not just trying to turn shit into gold.

alchemy is the use of chemicals to change one element into another. lead into gold, bronze to steel. pretty much trying to change the entire atom system of the ore without a trace of the wanted mineral/element

People have done it! It may be microscopic, highly radioactive gold...but it's gold all the same!

Actually, alchemy was more about the mind than about matter, something that should be obvious to anyone who has read the Atalanta Fugiens or the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili.

ITT emo teen tries to impress anonymous strangers on a board by claiming to have read a 17th century emblem book and 15th century allegory of no relevance to alchemy which are written in latin and italian, respectively.

I LOL's as well.
But, the books aside, Emo Anon is right. Alchemy did develop as a path of western enlightenment. Some groups practiced it mainly for that purpose, such as the Rosicrucian Order. In this system, the alchemical process of refining elements to allow their true essence to come forth was used as a metaphore for refining the self.
Alchemy, in many ways was proto chemistry, and like much western protoscience, was beleived to have a mystical element.
And that's my two cents.
