why do dogs bury bones?

I bought a bunch of munchbones and jumbones and whenever I give them to my dogs they sneak off to bury them somewhere and then look at me like they did something wrong.

I think I might end up wrapping them in ham and see if they will chew it next time

I've never had a dog that would bury bones. I haven't even seen another dog that would bury bones. I personally believe that dogs burying bones is something made up by story tellers or cartoons.

my dog is one annoying motherfucker.
he burys cakes
I bake them, and as soon as they cool down he finds them and hides them, then when I next have the door open he rushes outside and burys them.

My gf's dog buries everything she can get a hold of. If you were to dig around the garden you'd find everything from skittles to poundcakes (all in their wrappers, she only buries wrapped stuff oddly enough)

My friend has a dog that buries everything else, but if you give him a bone, he eats it. About 2 weeks ago he buried a brand new cellphone.

I thought my sister did that, and then I realized she had sat on it.

Never had problems with my dogs burying anything. But none of them were really diggers, either.

I have one dog that hides and buries things, she also dug a gigantic hole under my shop. She's tried to bury a marshmallow in sand one time, that just ended up a sticky sandy mess.

My dog often buries bones, but not branches and other chewing toys. He never unburies them, though.

He's saving them for when he needs them. Then he never needs them.

Op here

in the wild, sometimes a dog would have spare bones of anything he would kill, and he doesnt know when his next meal might be, so he takes the bones and then buries them near his den. Whenever he'd be short any food he would dig them up and survive on delicious bone marrow. YUM!

recently domesticated breeds still have instinctive habits that cause them to horde food.

got it from google.

My sister's dog does this with kibble. She steals pieces from the bowl one at a time and hides them all over the house.
