One of ours is a medium haired cat with lots of undercoat though, so when she starts blowing coat I have to brush her all the time and we have to vacuum more because he gets sneezy. I am slightly allergic to unfamiliar cats as well, but it's usually cats that aren't bathed well/fed well and they shed a lot of greasy nasty hair. =(
OP, make sure when you get your cat to feed good food (read: if you can buy it at the supermarket, you probably don't want it) because this will lessen the shedding quite a bit, and consequently, your suffering. You CAN bathe your cat, but make sure you clip its nails before the bath. Also, benadryl.
