Fat animals Anonymous
IS it me, or do some owners not know how to treat their pets?

some animals have a predisposition to gaining lots of weight, it happens and it normally has nothing to do with how they are treated by their owners. I feed my kitty junk food galore and they are all lean and healthy looking.

Apparently this Sunday on Animal Planet there is a show called "Fat Pets" at 8PM.

This is only my opinion (and loosely based on some scientific journals) but..
Most animals (especially humans) that suffer from obesity due so because of SOCIAL and PERSONALITY reasons, not because of propensities or genetics.

For humans: How can one say obesity is genetic? It only happens on the level of an epedemic in some countries, and only very recently.

Thyroid problems, but that's still pretty rare.

Predisposition my green ass. Fat owners are too retarded to look after themselves, let alone animals. Not walking your dog or keeping cats inside and feeding them too much is not a "predisposition".

Scientific studies, maybe? It's pretty hard to argue against hard evidence.

Also, you can't become obese if you're constantly at the brink of starvation, but when you have just the amount of food your body requires, your body will either a) burn that energy happily so that you remain lean or b) slow down your metabolism so that part of that food can be stored as fat. If your ancestors had to survive severe food shortages, it's more likely that your body will respond with option b.

As for cats, I doubt they have such adaptations. They might have genetic mutations that e.g. affect the amount of leptin, but that's bound to be rare. Most fat cats are just overfed.

Cats tend to gain wieght after spay/neuter. Spay and neutering does lower an animal’s metabolism so over time, less food and more exercise may be necessary.

Still.. SPAY AND NEUTER, PEOPLE!

Proper diet does exerordinary things for pets. My uncle has a 16 year old cat not the most energetic thing but it looks like it just left the kitten stage. Coat is clean things healthy he keeps it on a strick diet.

Fuck you. Seriously. I work in a shelter, and we have way too many animals because people don't fix their goddamned animals. There are approximately 6 to 8 millions dogs and cats in shelters each year and 3 to 4 million of them are euthanized.

My cat's husband impregnated her, they are both indoor cats. We didn't want to rob her of her right to have kittens.

We have two cats, a male and female. Both were fixed when they were under about a year old. Neither is obese. In fact the male is still as energetic as ever, even though it's already 13.

I settled on an even trade for my cat. She's easily the best pet I've ever had, so I decided to let her have one litter before getting her fixed, and I actually had more prospective homes lined up than the number of kittens she had, so all was well.

See the problem with that, is those people who adopted your litter could have adopted from a shelter who already have kittens waiting for homes. They might even be in a kill shelter, where they only have a certain amount of time to get adopted before being put down. I'm lucky enough to work at a "no kill" adoption center, but not enough people are adopting so animals can sit in adoption for a year or more..
