Dear /an/
I am currently babysitting a puppy till a permanent home is found. How do I entertain it? I've had it a few days and he constantly seems bored and whines. I've given him two stuffed toys which he doesn't seem to care for and a near empty peanut butter jar to lick clean and possibly chew on. I have no dog toys or anything so yeah...help me out?
/b/ has failed me, too excited and spammy over 200mil get.

pay attention to it?

It's a puppy...it eats all the attention I do feed it and whines for more. Also can't give it attention while I'm at work and I'd rather it not react in a destructive manner, i.e. chewing my couch/table legs, etc.

Play with it. Dont just throw it toys and expect it to have fun playing with itself like you do lulz.

if you cage him, he'll be a really unhappy dog instead of just an unhappy one --> bad idea, you faggot.

besides, puppies need food more than thrice a day. Can you take him to work?

Its not his dog, man, i dont think he wants to bond with it. He's taking care of it until it finds a home, right?

How to make dog happy?
Simple: Walk with it.

Well, then he shouldn't worry about it whining either.

OP here, I do walk the dog when I'm home, I do play with it around the living room or yard and give it attention. as>>61467noted, it is NOT my dog, there were 3 others and I said I'd babysit one till a proper home was found. NO I can't take the dog to work. I don't have a leash yet - buying one tomorrow so I can walk him around the block or something.

Puppies have enormous amount of energy so get used to the whining. Unless you got time to entertain it hours and hours per day, it wont be stopping. Try to drain the energy with long walks and if possible, let it run free. Toys are good but they rarely play with them alone, so basically its all about fetching. Also bones of different kinds bought from a pet store give them something to do for hours. And if the dog is the greedy type, you might hid its food or treats into your apartment or outside, it will have fun time finding them.
Puppies sure are cute but in the end they are really stressing and sometimes just impossible. The puppy age is the worst if you ask me but in time they will calm down.

And if its destroying your apartment, then start making the place more puppy proof. If possible leave it into one room only when you are away, it might feel anxious in a big apartment.

Idiot, to properly take care of a puppy you have to bond with it. It might be a hard goodbye when the puppy finds a new home but it'd be better for the puppy's mood.
And if the puppy isn't trained and she teaches it a few things(don't piss on the floor, sit on comand, etc), it will have a better chance of finding a new home.

Basically humans cant really keep company to a puppy the way it would like and as much as it would like. Ideal situation would be more than one puppy so they would play and keep each other company even when humans dont have the stamina and time.
Dogs that live withouth the company of other dogs are in a problem of developing a fear or hatred towards other dogs. When its still a puppy, let it meet with other dogs, young and old, it will enjoy the meetings and will grow up to be a normal social dog.

Don't sit on it.

Its properly called crate training, and its very effective when done right. I crate trained my dog and had her house broken in less than 2 weeks. I don't know how old the pup is or how long you're away at work, but this site has some great guidelines on crate training.

Removing the peanut butter jar is a good call to prevent pieces being swalled when pup chews them off. Surgery to removed an intestinal blockage = $$$. Plus, animals can be allergic to peanuts.

Also, I let my pup play with one of these, but ONLY UNDER SUPERVISION.

Most dogs can open the ball after a while of playing with it, which is fine if you remove it immediately and put it back together. Pup have problems getting their mouth around such a large ball, plus its more fun to chase around. To be extra sure the pup won't swing the ball, you can remove the weasel. Its a great toy when you want to sit on the couch, but the dog wants to play. It does have electronic parts, so I cannot emphasize enough that this is a good toy only when used in a supervised environment.
