my papillion Anonymous
I have a 2 year old papillion, *my girlfriend's* he's great, about 9-10 lbs. as to when he's not begging to go outside, how many times should i take him out for a walk for duty, so to speak. i usually go three times a day.

I know hear 2 is sufficient.

there are no girlfriends on the internet, even by association

So you take him out when he begs *IN ADDITION TO taking him out 3 times*? That would be just fine, although you always need to watch for his body language because sometimes dogs are not always clear about needing to go out.
If you are careful about monitoring his body language, you can get away with taking him out twice a day IN ADDITION TO any times that he asks you to. As dogs age, it gets harder for them to hold it in.
If you only take him out twice a day and ignore his pleas to go outside, then that would be cruel as some dogs would rather suffer than "soil" the house.
If he soils, don't punish him - just take him out 3 times a day, IN ADDITION TO any times that he asks.

My friend's dog is trained to ring the bell by the door when he wants to go out. Pretty good way to go if you can train a dog to do it.

I guess easiest way is for the owner to ring the bell just before taking the dog out? So that the dog associates the bell with going out?

That is fantastic. Teach the dog to ring a bell so that it won't bark.

You WANT small dogs to bark? Do they even bark? I thought they yapped.

That's it exactly. Ring it before opening the door, and the dog will learn to associate the bell with the door opening. Usually takes about two weeks to train, but it's very easy to do since you're on your way out anyway.

Agreed that is how it is done, both our dogs ring the bells hung on the doorknob (sheltie mix and a pomeranian). I took their paw and made them ring the bells with it before opening the door every time they went out, they caught on in no time really. The only problem is sometimes if you're upstairs you don't hear the pom ring cause she doesn't do it as loudly as the bigger dog. Also small dogs are a bit tricky to watch body language wise since they're much lower to the ground, harder to catch them squatting as opposed to sitting. Regardless, consistency is the key to success.
