Dog Training Clicker Anonymous
Do clickers really work as well as I've heard?

no.

Depends what you are using them for.

If you want to piss off everyone around you, than yes. They work.

That's good enough for me!

The key to training any animal is consistency. A clicker is just a convenient way of making a consistent noise.

They do work, but you don't have to have one. Your voice works just fine, so long as you say "no" (or whatever your "command" is) the same way, every time.

Personally, I've always found that voice commands work just as well, if not better. Most dogs seem to pick up voice commands faster imho.

What are you training for? Just basic obedience?

The reason clickers often work better than voice is that it's hard to say the same command word in exactly the same way every time. Clickers always sound the same, and it's a quick short sharp noise, which helps make sure the dog associates the sound with *exactly* the behavior you want them to.

But what's more important than the clicker itself is the basic principle of positive reinforcement it's based on. I'm not saying punishment's always bad, and sometimes it's necessary - but you can usually get more done with clicker-style reinforcement, and with reinforcement you're less likely to fuck it up and create more behavior problems.

Yes.

My girlfriend is a dog trainer. She uses it often and gets results.

It is also fun to carry around in your pocket in public.
