I'm worried about my dog.. socially. Anonymous
Today at the park, I ran into a girl with a small dog (male), maybe a Terrier or something. We both had our dogs on a leash and when we approached each other, they were both very tense, but my dog was clearly the one being defensive. She told me her dog has met lots of other dogs so it's probably very sociable, but my dog doesn't have any friends and never associates with other dogs. My dog (pictured here, female) is a mixed breed of a Greyhound and a Labrador Retriever.

So what went wrong, /an/? Am I expecting too much by thinking 2 dogs who have never met before - of different sex, breed, and class - to instantly hit it off?

I guess it's not really a surprise if she never associates with other dogs at all. Some dogs like each other, some don't. If your dog was like this with all other dogs, that would be a concern, but if it's just one or some other dogs, it doesnt really matter.
Try and socialise your dog more and see how she gets on.

But.. I have no other dogs to have her socialize with. I don't know anyone in my neighborhood with a dog, so the only way to get her to know other dogs is to approach random strangers and ask their dog to play with mine.

My cat was like that. He could easily beat any other cat, but he acted afraid on first meeting. Didn't stay afraid, though. Weeks later I'd find him sleeping in a cat-ball with 5 or 6 others and cruising the yards with his new posse.

We never really socialized our dog (didn't know anyone else with a dog) and now he's like a damn sociopath against other dogs. He'll first ignore them, but when they sniff him he starts growling and evading them. It's not a problem though, and he's loving towards most people.

I never got a chance to socialize my dogs with others. Nor do I feel like going to a training class or some shitty dog park.

I personally don't think its necessary to socialize them with other dogs. You should, but don't have too. But it would help that if your dog ever takes off on you, she might not fight with someone else's dog or attack one.
Females are also said to be more aggressive with other dogs with certain breeds.
