Okay /an/, I need to know, is it illegal to hunt beavers? Because a group of beavers live on the other side of the pond by my house, but recently they've been coming on to my property and going through my garbage. One of them bit my dog, and it cost a shitload of money to the vet for surgery. I want to go out at night and kill them with my bow. Should I do it?

It illegal to do so without a hunter license, especially when you hunt out of season. Best thing to do is to call Animal Control to have them move the beavers to another location.

OP here: I just chased a beaver out of my driveway. Thanks for that. I'll just call animal control, because they will come out and come into my yard again in a few minutes anyway.

Actually in most US states it is legal to shoot an animal that is in the act of doing damage to your property, regardless of season or "bag limits" or anything like that. The rules are typically that you must shoot the animal while it is actually being troublesome. So, you couldn't just go hunt down the beavers off your property. But if you shot one while it was getting into your garbage then that would be legal. Furthermore, you are not allowed to take a trophy, or in the case of a furbearer such as a beaver, it's fur. You shoot then you bury it. That's it.

I wouldn't suggest doing so unless you already are bowhunter and your'e confident that you can make a swiftly killing shot. That means knowing where the vitals are on a beaver and being sure you can hit them when the time comes. If you can do that, go for it! If you aren't confident that you can, then call animal control.

Believe it or not, it's not technically illegal to poison them while the poison is on your own property. Just say you were getting rid of rats or something.

Check if the beavers are classified as protected in your state first though.

Hey OP this guy has most of the info.

As a future Conservation Officer, its perfectly legal to kill beavers if they are being a nusiance animal. But you CANT keep it. You gotta burry it. You should also contact a CO/Animal control after you kill it.

Also..you wont get them just by going out and shooting at them. Its possible...but EXTREMELY unlikely. You pretty much have to trap them.

The best thing would be to put up some sort of deterant to make then not want to come around.

Lastly...I'm going to have to call some part of your story as bull. Unless you are storing trees in your garbage. Beavers don't eat crap like that. Are you certain your dealing with beavers and not muskrats or raccoons?

OP: I'm in Texas. I'll give that a quick check. I could just go get a jug of rat poison and pour it on my trash to kill the problem beavers. I don't really want to kill all of them, or call animal control, because I enjoy the company of the beavers that just come out at night and walk around in the road and build dams in the quarry. But I am about to fuck up any beavers that come into my yard.
