New dog Anonymous
I have a golden retriever. I've decided that he is the perfect dog. He's 11, so he won't be around much longer. I'm looking to get a new dog this summer. I want one that's medium size, is good with other pets, needs minimal grooming, needs a good amount of exercise, is playful, and that doesn't have hip problems. Can you give me some ideas. Thanks. Sorry for bad picture, took it with my phone a month ago.

Get the same kind of dog that have already have.

I was thinking about it. It's like I want a golden retriever that doesn't look like a golden retriever.

You took THAT with a phone? What phone was that? I want that..

Uh, I don't know. It's from Sprint, it's real thin, black and has 3 buttons on the front of it.

Some one told me I should get a Australian Shepherd. I checked it out. Looks good. Will they swim?

is that what mad max's dog was?

Why not a poodle?

what the hell?

Because poodles are pure faggotry in canine form.

Yet another "contribution" France has given to the world. Thanks France!!!

Poodles as a breed are way older than France as a nation. They seem to have been first bred by ancient Greeks. Which might explain the faggotry...

Get a chihuahua. I hear they're really spunky and tough little critters.

Any serious answers yet?

Heresy! There was no faggotry in ancient Greece as they lacked that concept.

When the French nobility started keeping them they caught the AIDS from them.

If you're not set on a particular breed, how about adopting a mix from a shelter. There are so many I'm sure you can find one with the characteristics you're looking for. Also, if you're worried about hip problems, going the purebred route is not a very good idea. Many breeds have a genetic predisposition for hip dysplasia.

My first dog's breed might fit the bill; he was a Belgian Shepherd. Sweet dog, although he'd steal my mittens right off my hands when I was little.. XD

He looked pretty much the same as the black one in the topmost photo. :3 Not sure if that's really what you're looking for, I'm not usually a dog person. XD;

Aussie wouldn't be your dog if you're looking for min grooming. They have thick coats and need groomed.
A lab or lab mix would be a good dog. I hate all dogs..but I find labs to be one of the more intelligent medium sized dogs. I find them tolerable. Lucky is a lab cross and we had her house broken and trained to sit, beg, roll over, shake, and laydown in a week.
I'd go for a dog at the pound or one in a paper for free.

German Shepherd/lab mixes are the best dogs ever.
Unless you get a poodle, you're pretty much fucked on the grooming.

I've had many of my dogs live 16+, don't just assume it's about to die, and also consider if you can support two dogs for however long he lives.

What a huggable dog you have. I have to agree with 78571. I noticed you say "I'm looking to get a new dog this summer." instead of "I'm looking to get -A SECOND- dog this summer.
I accept that old dogs can no longer be as active and start to cost more at the vet as they age. Also that there will come a time to say goodbye, but must you set a date? Or am I reading into your question too much?
Anyway, on lighter note - Did you build that for him for shade? What is it? :) You must live in a hotter part of the world.

>>78571
What sort of dogs did you have? Some breeds only live 10-11 years. What did you feed them?

Belgian Shepherds FTW! I'd love to get one, i'm just a bit worried they might be a bit too wimpy for me, at least the brown, longhaired (tervuerens) kind. They're all just big ol' wussies but tervuerens' are real huggie bears and basically get real lonely outside. A cross of the above and a Labrador might also be awesome. Calm, yet playful; bright as hell but still would (probably) go nuts over any entertainment; fuzzy but not too much. Yay!
And to the OP: I can see that dog is old but you might still have many years to enjoy its company. A friend of mine had Golden Retriever live to, I dunno, 15-17 years and a German Shepherd I knew lived to a ripe 20 years old.
...But where the hell did you find a g.r. in that beautiful red color? Most of what you see these days are those pale yellow or even nearly white with gimp sloping hindquarters due to show breeders messing with the gene pool. Man, you're lucky...
>> Anonymous
>>78590
Oh boy, I thought breeders only did that sloping hindquarters nonsense to German Shepherds. It was reported somewhere that those dogs are weaker and therefore not preferred for police work or other high-performance jobs. I can't find beauty in weakening strong breeds.

Yeah, why make good dogs retareded?
Well, it's not as bad as with the Schäfers but you can see (if you know how to spot it) that the either hips are busted or they will be. I think it's quite sad. Another point about the blond/white Breeders' Specials is their personality. Can you say "cotton candy"? You just can't find dogs of that size that are bigger wussies and even with smaller breeds you'd look for them for a long time. I'm not saying they're *dumb* (though they might be...) but that's not far behind either. Another nice breed just shot to hell.

I think I pwned myself there... "retareded"... :D

I had my akita live to be 21 and a lab live to 17.
When they were younger I fed them pedigree meat and kibble, in the later part of their lives I just fed them Costco lamb and rice kibble and table scraps.

Hip problems should be a big of a deal if you:

- Walk the dog once a day for at least 30mins
- Limit games like frisbee where they have to twist suddenly, this contributes to hip problems later on
- Watch the dog's weight
- Make sure the dog gets the right vitamins and minerals it needs in it's meals

Yeah, in Florida. I want a malamute so bad I was thinking of moving to like Ohio were it's colder. Then winter came, here in Florida, and I couldn't stand the 53 degree weather.

I have an Irish Setter and I love her. She's everything you want except that her grooming is as high maintenance as a golden retriever. She's great with cats and kids, and she loves to run around and be active. Irish Setter females are 60 lb and males are 70 lb, so they're pretty manageable. Also, they're very affectionate and all they want is to be with you. Perfect dog for companionship, if this is what you were looking for.

This is my girl.

The problem I know setters have is that they can be difficult to be made to eat properly. If they get stressed out, they might stop entirely for several days.

Setters have amazing personalities almost as a rule. And they *demand* lots and lots of excersize. Really, they do it themselves. they're all "Go on, take me out, come on, i wanna wanna wanna go out, please please please please take me out I wanna RUN and PLAY and FETCH and all that sortsa stuff PLEEAASE!"
you can't help loving them and I'd hate them for it if I only could. My gf won't shut up about getting them and I'd hate to get one just to prove her wrong. ...And I *will*not* take a dog where it won't be as happy as it could be.
(Dammit, I'd like one myself. I hate being right.)
