Ducks Anonymous
No relation to the other thread but I found it ironic.

Anyway, I'm a soon to be Coservation Officer and I have a test on North American Waterfowl soon and wondered if anyone out there would like to try stumping me with a duck.

Please Post any North American Waterfowl Image and I will name it. You dont have to post the whole waterfowl, you can also just post the wing.

First person to stump me wins a lovely prize!

(prize only available in some obscure town in Indiana between 3:05:03 am - 3:05:06am. Void where available, no refund upon purchase, winner is liable for all financial duties as well as the laws of physics.)

What about a description?

I live in Louisiana, and my backyard is very swampy. There is a bird that has been hanging out there the last couple of days that I have never seen before. It's head and chest are black but its wings have white stripes and it has a white ass. It has black or gray legs but it yells at me and flys off when I go outside, so I haven't been able to get a really good look at it. It appears to be the mullato offspring of a swan and a duck.

I whipped up this very accurate nearly-photographic mspaint of the mystery bird.It eats my birdseed and shits on my violets and clover and I have been considering letting my nigger cat try to catch it.

What color is the bill? I have two birds in mind and that should help finalize my decision.

Blackish, maybe really dark gray

I'll admit if you could get an actual picture itd help alot. The head area makes me think loon but the rest doesnt fit. I was thinking it might be a scaup but they have blue bills

When I said "accurate nearly-photographic mspaint", the important part of the phrase is "mspaint". The bill, head, and body shape are way different than the bird you posted. It doesn't have red eyes (so far as I can tell) or gray angry eyebrows either.

lol, yea. As I said, the throat patch made me think of that but nothing else fit.

This is the scaup which i know it isnt your duck. but this is why I asked the color of the bill.

Ok, this might be it. Its called a Brant and its a type of goose.

If this isnt it then grats you've stumped me until you can get a live pic of the bird. I can still help you figure it out though. I can find a good ID website for ya. Lemmie know if this is ur bird first

Cat them all, let God look up their actual subfamily.

It was indeed a black brant that I was describing, but I lied about it being in my yard. Basically, I picked an odd NA bird and put it in the wrong habitat. The reasoning being that if it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, but is in the desert.. doesn't mean it isn't a duck. Or, in this case, a brant. You determined the bird despite it being in the wrong range.

So, psuedo-trolling-test passed, congratulations!

(By the way, if I did confirm it was this bird, the proper thing to do would be to tell me NOT to let my cat eat it, since, you know, its uncommon, especially in this area)

A+++ WOULD LIE TO AGAIN

Actual question though.. what bird is this? I know it's not a waterfowl, but.. Is it a phoebe? This could win me 10 bucks.

is it a tufted duck?

I have a question for you!

Would you happen to know anything about different species of ducks interbreeding? I've seen lots of mutant ducks at various locations, usually college campuses, for whatever reason, lol. Alot of them seem to be a mallard mixed with something else such as a wood duck or your white farm duck. I even saw one that was part one of those crested ducks that are are all goofy looking. They have all different sorts of splotchy markings and shit.

See the picture I posted, they called it a wood mallard, but the genetics seem to turn up totally different in each duck?

Do you know if any research has been done on this sort of breeding? Could you tell me some neat things or direct me to a website where I could look more stuff up ?

Anyhow, thanks :D

ty. I'm glad to help and ty for the test.
>>234080
no idea.
>>234099
Mallards will breed with ANY duck. They are the prositutes and pimps of the waterfowl kingdom. Thats a very interesting mallard but I wouldnt think its considered a seperate species, just a fluke. In order to be deemed a seperate species these wood mallards would have to cease breeding with the two founding ducks and establish some sort of control breeding within themselves only.

Brewer's Duck is another type of mallard crossbreed with the Gadwall. But its also not considered its own species. I know alot of research has been done on it but I dont know how many different types of crosses exist or what a good site would be.

A couple ducks come to mind because of the bill. Its a large bill similar to a few species but this is where common names come in handy.

Wedge Head refers to the wedge shaped bill that belows to that of the Canvas Back. Which is the duck in your picture. A Female Canvas Back.

I'm proud of that one. Took some thinking.

Looks like some kinda thrush to me. Can't tell without seeing the breast.
>>234099
Sorry if you know this already, but mallards along with some other ducks go through a phase called "eclipse plumage" late in the year when they go very dark. The darker mallard there could be a mallard already going toward eclipse plumage.

Yea but this seems abit different. The bill shape and head arent that like a mallards. Now its possible for some genetic mutation to cause this but due to the nature of mallards it seems more probable to be a cross. It is not however, a cross with a Wood Duck. So I'm not sure where the Wood Mallard names derives from.

Sorry, it had its back to us every time I had the camera. Chest was cream or white.
I have a bet going that it is a phoebe and not a female towhee, and I am positive it's not a thrush (too upright, head isn't right). Thanks though.
