Sticking its poop on a news paper and leaving it there?
Eh, My dogs about 10 and hes never really been house broken. Always shits outside...

Well, I've never had trouble training my dogs. Everytime they would piss or shit in the house, I'd damn near shove their nose in it, spank them, and yell 'NO" at them.

It's firm, but not harsh. Don't listen to people that whine about that. They don't know the difference between a dog and a child.

I never understood the shoving their nose in it thing. Way to do it is to catch them in the act, give them a good verbal chewing out, and put them outside. Dogs are good at recognizing emotion thru your voice, and very eager to please. I've never had to do the above more than once for them to get the message.

Yeah, you're retarded. Your dog doesn't understand why you're shoving its nose into piss and shit, it just thinks you're an asshole.

To OP, if the dog is a puppy, take it outside after it wakes up, and after every meal. When it goes to the bathroom outside, make a big deal about it and sometimes give it a treat. Eventually it'll learn that going to the bathroom outside gets a good reaction. Reward works much much MUCH better than being an idiot and shoving a dog's nose in piss. (Also, dogs aren't smart enough to know that you're scolding them about pissing on the floor, if they did it more than 30 seconds ago, you're doing absolutely no good at all.)

Use gentle and approving voice and gestures whenever it shits in places you want. Do the opposite when it doesn't. It'll learn eventually. Btw is this your pup in the pic?

I'm going through the same thing now..so I read a bunch of books. Not an expert, but it's working nicely for my pup.
Shoving face in shit does nothing. It only gives the illusion of working the times you actually catch him in the act of relieving himself, scolding him, and shoving him out the door. It can actually take longer that way and cause him to resent and fear you. Wouldn't you hate someone who was shoving your face in shit?
As was said, take your dog out when he wakes up and ten minutes after he eats and drinks. Only feed him at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Put the food and water up out of his reach. That will help control his need to go to times when you can be vigilant.
When he does relieve himself when you want him to, praise him. It's best to say his name in praise so he knows you're talking to him.

Puppys usaly circle sniffing the floor just before theyre about to, so if theyre realy young and can only toddle about have news paper for them to go on, if you see them about to- pick them up, and put them on the paper, they will associate the paper with peeing etc, after a few times and when your puppy remembers to go on the paper itself, start moving the paper towards outside, bit by bit, and eventualy outside..then keep it there for a while, then remove it completely..the last place it remembered it was allowed to pee was outside, and will do so, reward it.

What others have said. Use reward, not punishment.

If he pees on your floor, it sucks, but don't yell at him unless he is in the middle of going to the bathroom. By the time you find his mess and go to yell at him, he won't remember what he did wrong to get yelled at in the first place.

It would be the same as if when you were 16 you crashed your dad's car, then three years later he starts yelling at you. You won't even remember why the fuck he's yelling at you anyway.

i had to lock mine in a dog cage whenever i left the house, after two weeks and only 4 puppy pads, she was peeing like a pro

So, they can't make a cause-effect relationship but they can make personality judgements based upon human societal norms?

I didn't know dogs could grasp something so complex as what is good or bad, right or wrong socially...yet not understand pissing on the floor begets punishment.

Dogs are not idiots. Despite the concept of psychological humanism, unconditional positive regard does not always get the desired results.

When they poops on the floor, show it to him/her (don't rub his/her nose in it, that could promote anger), and sternly say "No!" When you take him/her out, and they do their business, give a treat to them and a good petting with an enthusiastic "Good boy/girl!"

You can choose to only praise, but know it will probably be as effective as only using negative reinforcement. It will work, but you could do a much better job by setting the definition of right and wrong at the same time -- right is going outside, wrong is going inside.
