yo /an/,

First post here, hope you can help me!
Bear with me, I know these photos are a little blurry. If anyone knows how I can take better quality pictures with my PowerShot S2, let me know and I will snap more.

Can anyone identify this insect? I found it underneath the lip of one of my stairs as I was returning from work this evening. I immediately sprayed the shit out of it with Raid multibug, and it died, as pictured, not far from where I sprayed it. I'm fearing the worst... first one I've ever seen though.

tl;dr: wtf is this?

OP here,

It didn't seem to run too fast, and it didn't really seem to be affected by me turning on the lights. When I blew on it, it kind of moved, but nothing drastic like the cockroaches I saw in my friend's dorm one time (bigger, fast as hell, ugly.)

Can't really tell too much with the blur

Might be a sheild bug / stink bug.

Aren't stinkbugs typically wider?

Fuck... I just took a closer look @ the thing.

Its legs have hairs on them, and it has two horn-like things on its ass.

OP here...
btw, my house is 5,000+ ft^2, and it was in one of the staircases near the 2nd level. It's not exactly dark and damp there most of the time -- wouldn't a cockroach be more likely to be found in the basement?

They can survive in a lot of places, specifically if there is food available to them.

Where do you live (what country)? Do you have a cold winter? Is your house standing alone or part of a complex?

Cockroaches are common in many parts of the world, you can hardly avoid them there. (If you have a warm & humid summer, they might even fly to your house...) But even if they are not native at you place, they can emigrate in suitcases, boxes, cars...

Most of the time they'll hide, and you probably don't even notice them. But sometimes one gets confused and lost, and crawls around where you can see it.

I live in the Northeastern USA, more specifically NJ. My house is standalone, closest neighbor is about 400 yards away. We've had some warm, humid days so far this year... I've called Terminix already, and will have them check this out!

I don't know what these things are called, but they're all over Colorado. They're harmless. As you observed they're really slow and don't give a shit what you do. You can usually even pick them up and they don't even move.
