so I was walking out of the house and I see this bird walking along the driveway. I thought, 'hey, I haven't seen one of those around my house before', so I went nearer, and to my surprise, it jumped up onto my hand and perched itself on my shoulder. Does this mean it is someone's pet that escaped ? What kind of bird is it, and how do I take care of it ?

Pic is of me and said bird.

looks like a cockatiel. unless you happen to live in Australia, where they're native, it is/was probably someone's pet.

Its a cockatiel! It must be a pretty sweet bird if it just jumped up on you and luffled. I'd say your best bet is to google up some care and information.

well ya I'm in australia, but surely a wild bird wouldn't be so friendly ?

it looks sick, you might wanna take it to the vet just in case.

That bird is cockatiel =) Looks like a male.

Oh, and they need mixed seed - they love sunflower seeds. Also some chopped apple and carrot. They are great company and you can teach them to talk. They dont like being left on their own.

Cockatiels are very sweet, affectionate birds. They usually only do that unbearable shrieking when they're lonely. Mixed seed, especially sunflower, is fine for them.

We had one when I was little that would sing "Tequila."

That's a male cockatiel. He needs a cage(ask at a pet store for one that is the appropriate size), cockatiel food(either seed mix or pellets, specifically saying it is for cockatiels. Birds have specific dietary needs) and a few toys. You should look up a list of things NOT to feed him, and also get him a vet visit. He could be sick from being out on his own. Please take good care of him. :(

How long 'til you sit on it?

i imagine that it's someone's pet. it's worth keeping if you can't find an owner. My friend's cockatiel sammy loves tissues. We always hold a tissue up to his cage and he starts making fun noises. however we went to petco to see if other birds reacted similarly and none did. so maybe it's just sammy. try a tissue with your new friend

aw... You should take it to the vet just to make sure it's not sick before you decide whether to keep it as a pet or not. but yes, it is an escaped pet. cockatiels are not wild in the USA. :)

Put up signs saying you found a pet bird.

Give it back to the rightful owner for Christ's sake.
