well...so there it was. page 10, last topic and i posted...posted...posted 3x and it didnt move up to the front of the page

it was odd to see my posts being updated but nothing happened.

so dihard fan resurection #2

also i found a winged ant today but i think its a male sad...then i found a huge huge black carpentar ant that is either a queen who took her wings off or a guard ant

sadly i think its the latter.

>> T.T.T.
I'm OP of thread 1, though others restarted it in 2 and 3 using images from the first thread.

I just got home and shined a little red LED light in there to see. There were a bunch of workers camping in the new tube.

Soon as I hit them with the red light they scurried around. Someone previously said ants don't mind red light, though it seems mine do. lol
>> Anonymous
tube? you got them moving into tunnels now? sweet. it wont be long now then.

too bad yours seem to dislight red light. id try green next?

Only workers who never get out the nest and never seen light don't see the red light, all the others do.
The best thing is not covering them at all and let them get used to light, I do that with all my colonies and now they don't freak out every time I come near them.

There was a fucking HUGE winged ant crawling up my bathroom wall today. It must have been a queen.

I wanted to smash it...but somehow couldn't bring myself to, so I just brushed it off the wall.
>> T.T.T.
I saw my mother recently. She mentioned how there were a bunch of of huge black ants coming in the house that morning while I was at work. She, of course, killed them.

I asked if she'd seen them since and said no. Bah, I missed a raid of queens!
>> T.T.T.
In other news I wanted to give my argentines something besides honey, and my work gets a lot of squishy flying bugs on the windows for the past couple nights.

So I got a container, caught three. I knew the ants are few, so I made it easy... I trimmed the wings and the legs on one side, then threw them in, one in front of the tube and the other two scattered.

I checked a little later to find two ants pulling the nearest one into the tube. They've now got it at the back, though I don't really know if they're doing anything with it.
>> Anonymous
>>260556

The ants them self don't need insects, ants only need honeydew in order to survive.
The workers will eat the fly and store it in there lower bodies (gaster) where it will stay until a larvae needs the nutritions in order to evolve to a pupae.

The following pictures are from the species Camponotus truncatus.
The interesting thing about this species is the way they defend their colony, the majors (soldiers) have developed a big flat head (as illustrated in the picture) and are able to block the entrances to the nest with their heads making it impossible for intruders to get in the nest.

I found a very large, red ant with black based wings. It doesn't look like it has a rear end big enough to be a queen so I assume it may be male.

I have my doubts that this new one will be able to lay either way, as it still has wings. Still was a nice find at work, as per usual.

Wow, ant swarm today. I found a black ant with wings at work, just like the girl that died a couple days ago.

Then... I found countless dead wing-ants all over the place. I found dozens when I did a sweep of the floor.

So I started looking around. I found a dead one (had been stepped on) that had no wings.

Then I noticed a winged one on a coworker and carefully removed it. This one had a tiny head, and I assume it must be a male, and my first female. So I have a mating pair. I had the bright idea to check a closet and found a couple males who got stuck in a cobweb.

I finally found a wingless female hiding in a corner. She's missing an antennae, but who cares? :D

Yeah, according to whoever answered me previously.

Also, in line of my black ants -- three winged males and winged female...

One winged male died. I checked later and they had tore it to pieces. Another was dead by then. The third male may be dying, I'm not sure yet.

The female looks to have one wing, the other wing attached only by being stuck to first.. They may have mated, not sure.

Also, one of the ones that was wingless seems to have a small cluster of eggs already...

Today I was very lucky to encounter a pretty rare queen, the Lasius fuliginosus queen parasites other Lasius species by infiltrating the nest, killing the queen and enslaving the workers.
It's not easy to mimic this process in captivity, but I actually succeeded, the Lasius niger workers are now slaves and nursing the queen, soon there will be L. fuliginosus workers and then the slave workers won't be needed anymore and they will die.

The picture is the queen after she suppressed the workers.

These black queens are much different than my argentine queen.

The ones that started laying first... with only water to drink, each have produced a pile of eggs as big as themselves.

It's really quite amazing that THAT many ants can come from a single queen without anything consumed in the process. Especially considering they're probably a long way from finished.
>> Anonymous
>>274341

they use their natural reserves when they start the colony, when the first workers are born they will go out and forage food for the queen

I think I have found an ant queen, but I'm not a hundred percent certain. It has a long and fat abdomen and was found with many similar looking winged ants, but I just want to make sure it's not the heinously deceptive Drover Ant worker. I'm pretty sure it's not a male since the males seem to be tiny as hell compared to the winged ones. I'm located in Florida, but I'm not sure what species it is. Never mind. They were queens, and they kicked each others asses. Heh, interesting. I found a mantis nymph. I took it in and offered it an ant I found outside. I left the container sealed so the ant would not escape.

It escaped anyway, apparently, as I found it being killed in my Argentine Ant enclosure. It had something white in it's mouth so either it was sand or it actually tried to steal one of their eggs!

The ants are, for the first time, incredibly active now, searching their enclosure regularly. Seems all they needed was an intruder.

After constantly having had to deal with ant infestations, willingly supporting the little fuckers doesn't really appeal to me. I'll just watch /an/'s.

Yup, Duplo. Old Lego products are pretty useful for quick makeshift solutions. I've been able to easily upgrade it in size.

Personally I'd like to work on something more secure; I've bumped a couple tubes off the rack before. I've since moved it up on top of my desk so as to avoid such accidents. :P

Is anyone else's queen trying to dig her way out of her test tube through the cotton ball?

No, but that means she is not satisfied with the tube, this could mean the following things.

1. too bright
2. too hot/cold
3. too humid/not humid enough
4. too stressed out because you keep bothering her

bump not possible?

My little red ant was doing that. After a couple days she settled down. Not sure what her problem was.

It seems the thread is dying. I've noticed my last couple posts didn't bump it either. I'll archive it I guess.

drat. well. looks like its time to hand the torch onto another. i restarted this thread. somone save a pic and start it over.

maybe there is a limit to the number of bumbable posts or after a certain number of days its unbumpable
