My rat just had babies and it's buried them under the bedding twice now, it just takes all the bedding in the cage and pushes it over into one conner. Is this something I should be worried about? and it's not like, half an inch of bedding, it's a good 2-3 inches on top of the little suckers.

Is that pic from right now? If it is, it might be that it's stressed about you touching it and the babies and hiding them. I really don't know, but it could be that.

Nah, the pic is just a pic of the mother when she was still preggo with the babies. I would snap a picture, but they just went to sleep and I'd rather not wake them, then the kittens get all worked up and she'll prolly end up burring them again.. :/

I see. So I guess the safest bet would be just to leave them undisturbed for now and see how it goes. If it looks like there's a real danger of suffocating, then you should do something immidiately.

dont touch the baby rats. AT ALL.

I'm not an expert about rats but my guess is that she is trying to get them in a nest so they would be warm and safe from predators. Bedding used in cages is usually not really airtight especially if it's just pushed around by a rat and not patted in, so I wouldn't worry about asphyxiation.

That's nothing to worry about at all. She's just trying to keep them safe and warm as already said by Anon. However, if in doubt, this forum http://www.fancy-rats.co.uk/community/ is full of lovely people.

She might just be trying to hide them or keep them warm while she rests.
As long as they aren't suffocating or getting squished by her.
Keep watch, but Don't touch them. If the mother smells you on her babies, she'll either eat them or neglect them.

Does she have a hiding place to keep them in? That is why she is burrying them, she is trying to hide them. Give her a box or something.
>> Anonymous
That's pretty normal behavior from what I've seen. It's just a nest to protect the babies.

Is their a place for them to hide in the cage? A box, or an igloo? If not, get them one. She is just trying to hide them. Any thing will word teally.. A shoe box, my rats love pepsi boxes (they prefer them over any thing else), or a cereal box. Just put the box in, toss some bedding inn it, and thats it. She will probably move them in there and stop burrying them.

Rats will not harm their babies if they smell like you. It's an urban myth (and no, it doesn't bother birds, either). However, rats are horrible mothers and you touching them or disturbing their nests can set them off. So I'd leave her alone for a few days. And no, burying them will not harm or kill them.

Any updates OP?

OP here... I was worried about the babies and so I pulled them out. They were ok. I left for a moment and came back to see that the mother had eaten all of the babies, broken out of her cage and scurried her fat ass out of the house. God only knows where she is now..
