I have discovered an interesting instinctive hunting technique while playing with a 2 months old kitty. it stops movement if its "prey" stops movement. This trick obviously improves the probability of not being spotted by a mouse or a bird that stops its movement from time to time to scan the surroundings.

or it could be to judge its distance from its prey and determine if, while the prey is stationary, it would be able to make the distance and attack the prey.

Hell, it might just stop because it's an idiot of a cat.

Humans do this thing too. We twitch when the ad break is on, and as soon as the damn commercials are over and the show is back on, we all go rigid and our eyes go wide.
