Ha, nice comments guys. Long story about my chickens (all bloody 8 of 'em) Two were birthday presents (the rooster and a hen, named Almost Soup) then I got 25 day old chicks for a graduation present, as a joke. After frantic eBay ads, we auctioned off all but 7 of the chicks to good homes, then gave the rooster to a petting zoo after he started crowing at 5am. So now, Anonymous, I have a question. Will somebody please, please, please help me eat some of the 30+ eggs I get a week from my 7 hens?

My roosters like to crow at 2am for some odd reason...then are quiet 'til morning. Anyway, as far as eggs go, sell 'em, or, give 'em away. I take mine to my church where they let anyone who needs them take some.

My church is Roman Catholic. We don't help people, we take their money and shoot them in the knees.

I heard that chickens are moderately smart and have distinct personalities, which makes them fun pets. Is this true?

Yep mine play tackle football with worms as the ball, they go totally apeshit. Plus Almost Soup thinks she's a dinosaur, I had no clue chickens could growl. The Ameraucana hens I have lay green and blue eggs, and the Rock hens lay brown eggs, so no more of that vile smelling Easter Egg dye!

It is true. I grew up with chickens and still keep one in my house overnight. I got plenty of stories, but I'll leave it to OP to answer your question in more detail - I'm lazy, see?
However, I will tell you this: When I was around 10 and came back from a 3 week holiday, my pet chicken immediately recognized me from afar and started jumping and running for joy, towards me.

I plan on getting at least four hens when I move to Wyoming in a few years. Delicious eggs all the time. They sound like they make awesome pets and I'll definitely be raising them from tiny chicks so they'll be well-adjusted and human friendly. Can't wait uaogaghpwajpaslhjaljpa.

Pic related, going to have at least one Australorp.

I'd really like a chicken as a pet one day, though I haven't had much luck with them when I was younger. China apparently wasn't the best of places to raise them.

Is it advisable to get more than one chicken or do they fare fine alone?

almost ruined an actually nice thread. I love roosters!

LOL Dahar (named after how his crow sounded) the rooster now lives at a private ranch b/c of his crowing. He says hello, though, as do the hens: Almost Soup, Chip, Twin, Chris, Caligula, Nero, and Napoleon.

No, a thousand times no. My dad used to raise them. Chickens are stupid, filthy, noisy, mean birds and the only thing they're good for is eggs and frying.

Chickens are pretty cool pets. We have about ten - three are somewhat young baby chickunz, but we suspect they are all roosters >.> Ergh.

It depends how you raise chickenz on how they act. For example, we raise most of our chickens inside our house in a special cage, then put em in the coop outside. This produces tame, friendly chickens.

Also eggs. Hmmmm, eggs.

Which breed is Almost Soup?
>> Anonymous
Soupy is a Barred Rock crossbreed. She's actually from a grammar school project one of my friend's dad did (he's a bio teacher.) They hatched eggs for a class project and couldn't find homes for every bird.
