Honestly, if you're going to be away a lot, a dog might not be the best choice. They don't typically take well to being by themselves for long periods of time without developing bad habits in the process. Some breeds, especially the oriental breeds (pekingese, chins) tend to be more catlike and independent, but on the whole it's a bad fit. You could also consider an older or senior dog that needs a home, since they tend to spend the majority of the day sleeping and odds are you really will be saving their life. Tell the shelter staff about your situation, and see if they have a dog that fits your situation. In this case it's better to look at dog's individual personality and not worry as much about the breed or mix.
I'd really consider a cat or a pair of ferrets. They do better with being by themselves for longer periods of time, but can still be playful and personable.
