How long can a flea live without being on an animal?

My cat has fucking fleas and they are all over her and when she walks around they are all dropping off and shit and on to me sometimes and it's pissing me off. I am paranoid incase they can transfer to me or some shit.

My carpet has been sprayed with flea killer shit and she has a flea collar on but it doesn't seem to be helping.

What do I do?

ask you vet for serious help.
The stuff you can buy often is ineffective.

Are flea collars any help at all?

nope. take that shit off,get something like frontline, its just a dropper on the back of the neck.the shop bought stuff is shit too

Yeah, seriously, take off the flea collar and get the drops that go on the back between the shoulder blades. And vacuum your house often.

Why do stores even sell flea collars?

Second this. Frontline is EXTREMELY effective stuff.

Says it's effective for a month, but in practice, I only have to use it once a year. They get fleas, I use it, and no more worries until next fall.

Flea collars don't work, period. None of them, ever.

You have to get something like Advantage or Frontline. You can buy it at the vet and most pet stores (they usually keep it in a glass case or somewhere out of site, just ask for it). It's about $30 for cats, I believe, and has 3 months worth of doses. Some vets also sell single doses for $10-$15.

Frontline and Advantage USED to work for my dog and cat, but they are completely ineffective now.

Spray your yard or something, dude. If you have so many fleas that prescription strength flea medicines can't kill them fast enough, then you have a serious infestation. Spray your yard, house, anywhere that the animals go (within reason of course), and make sure you're reapplying every month. Try Frontline Plus, Advantix (for your dog), or something else similar if you think that your fleas have become immune.

Think about it this way, OP, anywhere your cat has been is infested with fleas. They don't actually live on the animal, just hop on to feed. You have to spray your entire house, your yards, and treat with something more effective that sprays and collars. And please, OP, the chances of you killing your cat with over the counter flea medicines are ridiculously high, so use something from the vet.

Good job poisoning your cat with a flea collar.

same, my dog has had fleas twice, a single treatment of frontline wiped them out both times.

fleas have a life span of around 3 months. a colony of fleas can live for a year or more without a food source

My tabby had a flea collar on, the fleas would sit on it to flip me off

fire is still the best way

So let's see. A single flea lives 3 months, WITH food. But somehow a whole colony can live a year or more WITHOUT food. What do they do, resort to cannibalism?

Also, how do I do ITALICS instead of having to CAPITALIZE every time I want to EMPHASIZE something?

1) Take your cat to the vet, first of all, for quarantine for the day. Tell them to get rid of the fleas.
2) Fleabomb the fuck out of your house. You'll usually need four to six different bombs in various locations in your house. Because toxic fumes are spraying everywhere, you can't be in your house during this time. Go out and do something for six to eight hours. Remember to remove your cat's food dish from open ventilation. It might be a good idea to clean it anyway when you return.

not op, but I have a question.

I've treated my cat with advantage for two months now and I'm still finding a lot of flea bites on him, especially on his face. I touch and pet and rub him a lot, could I be rubbing the medication off?

No, it soaks into their skin and is stored in the same layer of dermis as a tattoo...it slowly dissipates after about a month. It can take 3 months of continuous use to kill all the adult fleas and for all the larvae to hatch...
Keep using it!

You also need to make sure you're treating the house. At the very least get some carpet flea powder. If it's really bad use a flea bomb or three.

ahh thanks! another question... my kitty is not an outdoor cat so no new fleas are being introduced onto him. should I flea bomb my place in addition to the advantage? if so - I've read you need to get one containing IGR so it will affect the eggs as well, I can't seem to find a flea bomb with this. should I use one without it?

Go to Petco and check out the selection. I'm sure the ones they have there treat the fleas, larvae, and eggs.

You can try just a carpet flea powder at first if you think a flea bomb is too extreme. Ask an associate there to help you out.

my dog had fleas pretty bad, one application of frontline 3 months ago..haven't seen one since

My cats had fleas, used Advantage and vacuumed and haven't seen any since. It's supposed to take care of new hatchlings as well making them unable to continue the cycle. Worked fine for me with just a good vacuum.

When I got my cat, she was covered. I got special shampoo and gave her a bath (yes, she hated it, but it had to be done) and put Frontline on her. I kept the carpet vacuumed, and used flea powder. Within a day they were no longer hopping all around, and within 3 days they were completely gone. Have not had an issue since.

I used to have a big dog and we had a couple flea infestations. Best thing is Frontline, wash everything, and take a hot water shampooer to your carpet, not just a vacuum.

The shampooers are really effective.
