Best "indoor" dog Pooper
I'm going to be moving to my new apartment soon... and i really want to get a dog... now... i have no garden... but there is a big park/woodland area nearby, so that's probably where i'd take him for walks etc.

Does anyone know if either: GSDs/Huskies/Labradors are ok to be generally kept indoors? :S

I have my heart set on a Husky.... i know they're really hyperactive etc... im just wondering if it's realistic for me to have one in an apartment!

(i work 9-6 btw and should be getting a roomie in the near future)

Thaaaaaaaaaaaanks /an/ !

>>126505

Well yeah sounds stupid i know.. but i have a friend that owns a husky, and she's left alone most of the day, and just let out to poop etc....

seems to be OK!
>> Anonymous
Go ahead. Get the Husky. Knowing that it's hyperactive, and that you'll be leaving it inside and alone for most of the day. Enjoy the apartment your bored dog rips to shreds.

You, sir, are a retard.
>> Pooper
>>126512

Well im just saying i know they can be a handful... maybe "hyperactive" isnt the right word...

anyway, my friend's husky has never chewed/ripped up or otherwise destroyed anything in house... so surely i can train mine to be the same!?

>>126512here.

>>126514
MAYBE. You'd be better off going for a more laid back dog. You should not get a 'hyperactive' dog if you're in an apartment, and work most of the day. It'd be fine if he had a nice big back yard to run around in when you aren't home, but in an apartment?

Seriously. Go with a mellow dog.

I heard a husky normally needs some constant excersise as well, unless the one your getting knows how to go for a jog,get something to drink, and come home by itself, then expect a fat dog.

I also heard they shed like a motherfucker.

Get a mothafuckin' BASSET HOUND
>> Anonymous
As much as you'd like the husky, I'd love one too, it just isn't realistic if you don't have enough space. Especially if you're gone most of the day.

I'm sure there's a more fitting dog you can get.

What about a schipperke?
>> Pooper
awwww OK i guess i'll hold back on the Husky then :(

(and yeah the do shed STUPID amounts lol... it's like it's neverending...)

How about a Labrador? are they better suited to 'indoors' :S
>> Anonymous
>>126565
How large is your apartment? If it's large enough for a labrador to comfortably move around, then I'd say it's a much better choice.
>> Pooper
>>126566

Yeah it's fairly big.. 2 bedroom.

Probably go with a Lab :D

Although how about GSDs?
>> Anonymous
I wouldn't get a big dog- especially if you live in an apartment/aren't home much. Get something smaller, it'd be better for both you and the dog.
>> Anonymous
>>126504

You're a retard. If you live in a fucking apartment and you're never home, why the hell would you think that you should get a big dog? What, so both you and, more importantly, the dog can suffer? Yes, go get your husky or your lab and within 6 months that poor dog will be looking back at you from behind the bars on his cage...at the SPCA as you give him up because you "couldn't handle him." Don't get a dog you *think* you could handle because you're just setting yourself up for failure if you do. You should get a dog that you know is specifically suited to apartment living and being left alone for long periods of time. (BTW, neither labs nor huskies fit into either of those catefories.) So wise up and don't get a big dog. And if that dog's gonna be alone all day, you shouldn't get a puppy (it'll pee all over and you'll have a hell of a time housebreaking). You should rescue or adopt an older dog.

As to what breeds are good, why don't you try a corgi, a sheltie, or even a miniature poodle? Dachshunds are also very good, as well as basset hounds. Pugs are very friendly as well.

A note: If you go with a herding dog (corgi, sheltie) you would need to be prepared to exercise the dog constantly. But if you live next to a forest/park then this shouldn't be too much of a problem. Besides, herding dogs generally can be trusted to walk off leash and run around without running off, so you would probably enjoy walking with them.

Good luck and don't be an asshole.

most dogs, of any breed (especially huskies) are very social. They need companionship, and don't do so well when left alone for long periods of time.
>> tigerfeather !CrwtTbFNxQ
OP troll is TROOOOLLLLL.

You can keep a husky in your apartment as long as you don't mind a destroyed apartment. =D Most complex managers set a rule of 15-20 lbs tops for dogs, and that's why. The dog's (especially the husky's) barking and whining would give it away, so it's not like you could HIDE it indoors.

Hahahahaha.

I have a husky.
You cannot have a husky in an apartment.
I have a husky on 14 acres and that's hard enough to handle.

Get something small. Stop being such a self-centered asshole and think of the dog. It's unfortunate that you need company and reassurance so much that you'd torture a large breed of dog by imprisoning it in an apartment rather than a home with a large yard. The dog will live a sad and bored life. Clearly you're not mature enough to handle a dog. Please rethink this for the sake of the dog.

How about a klee kai? A succesful attempt at creating a smaller more manageable huskey, including being practical for apartments, they were made by crossing huskey's with schpperks & american eskimos

I always wondered how these dogs were. I've never heard anyone talk about them, and only one book I own even includes them.

The question is, are they bitchy little small dogs (like a chihuahua, ect) or actually intelligent?
>> Anonymous
All dogs like companionship. Living in an apartment and being alone for the majority of the day is not ideal for any dog. Most big dogs require a lot of activity, and I can assure you it will get depressed being in an apartment all day by itself.

I live in an apartment with a dwarf dachshund myself. I don't work as much as you do, but it's still hard for the dog as dachshunds have a very social behavior. I've been thinking about getting another dachshund to keep her company while I am away, which I think will work out quite well.

So, my advice to you is to get two small dogs instead of one big one. They will keep each other company while you are away and have enough space to run around in until you get home to take them out. And if you worry about two dogs being a lot of work, then trust me, it's not more work then having one! I find it is actually less. =) And twice as much love!

Heh. I suggested a schipperke earlier, interesting looking dog. I'd also like to know about its temperament, if you know anymore about them?

>>127051

A buddy of mine had one. He bought a very young puppy, expecting it to be fairly large, since they are rather wolf-like. LOL, idiot. Anyway, it was an awesome dog. Very active and fun to play with, but also intelligent, obedient, and rather quiet. It wasn't one of those fucking faggoty yappy small dogs. I would recommend them for someone who lives in a small space and wants a small dog with a "big dog" personality.
>> Anonymous
>>127111

That, to me, sounds like the perfect pet. I've had small dogs but they've always been nervous and rather dumb. I've always wanted to own a larger, more intelligent and calm dog, but it's never been practical.

Maybe I'll look into this myself, even if the breed isn't that common.

OK i admit i could have worded my OP better.. but i can assume im not some retard whos going to keep an animal locked away in an apartment on it's own... i did say i was going to be getting a roommate in the near future (so the dog isnt going to be alone - and can be taken out for frequent walks during the day), plus ive owned animals all my life and i can assure im a responsible owner.. not some retard like you see on Animal Cops and other similar (depressing) TV shows!

After i stayed witha friend who owns a husky.. i noticed that she spent a lot of time indoors... and she never barked/whined... or seemed to mind.. she seemed perfectly happy and healthy.... although they did have a backyard... which i obviously.... so letting him/her out to poop etc becomes more of an 'event' seeing as i'd have to walk him/her to the park or something...

my good friend has a husky puppy, and he HATES to stay inside. These dogs are bred to RUN and to utilize a small anount of food into a ton of energy. If you live in an apartment, you MUST take him out often where he can run around. If you can't do that, don't get one.

You called?

On topic: The superbig breeds tend to be okay indoors, with as much outdoor exercise as you can stand *once they are adults*. I'm talking mastiff, Greater swiss, Berner, etc. Those tend to want to be couch potatos. However, until they are 2-3 years old, expect them to chew on everything they possibly can and annoy the fuck out of you.
>> Anonymous
Greyhounds are big couch potatoes, and you can have the benefit of saving a racing dog as well.
But, personally, you shouldn't get a dog unless you can devote a lot of time to it. Get a rat or a cat, or something.

No, I don't need to spend ten minutes stressing in order to call someone stupid. I just say "You are retarded and I hate you." Of course, on the series of tubes, it only takes a few more seconds to explain it the rest of the way, noting how a poster's mother sweats through her tongue, should have been aborted, etc. Also, this http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=vboGDSUGCyY explains things much better.

DO NOT GET A HUSKY UNLESS YOU WANT TO PICK UP HUMAN SIZED SHIT, HAVE EATEN CARPET AND SHOES THAT HAVE NO SOLE.

I have a Siberian Husky, we can't leave her inside because every time we do she eats our carpet, weve replaced it 4 times, not to mention she's VERY hyper.
