Hey /an/, I'm sorry but this is going to be yet another cat health question thread.

I noticed today that Gary (pictured) has gone to her box a couple of times and strained like she was going to poop but nothing came out. She's done this twice today that I've seen, and now it makes me wonder about an incident I saw yesterday where she was outside with me in the veggie patch and scratched the ground and went to squat but didn't seem to actually do anything. I found this odd because she usually never defecates outside.

She's a mentally deficient cat, being the runt of a litter I saved, so maybe I'm just being paranoid and she's just being dumb. But does anyone on /an/ know if this could be a symptom of a serious problem, perhaps with her bowels?

She's always had a delicate stomach, but I haven't changed her diet at all. She eats dry cat food with occasional tiny raw meat scraps.

I've just called my sister and asked her for advice, and she says to watch her and if she's still doing it tomorrow, to go to a vet and ask for something for a cat with constipation. Sound advice, but I was just wondering if any Anons here have had something similar with their cats!

This can happen a lot with kidney issues. I'd get her to the doc ASAP. Kidney failure comes fast and it can kill.

Yes, my sister had a cat with kidney issues who died because the local vet was inept and kept her on a drip for five days while he was on holidays. The same vet I'm going to have to take Gary to if her condition deteriorates.

But Gary's drinking a lot of water, is perky, cuddly, eating food. Very different to the way my sister's cat Tia was when she first got ill, i.e. hiding under chairs, laying about, stiff and dry fur.

maybe she's just constipated? how old is she?

She's roughly 5 years old, I think.

I'm not ruling out kidney problems by any means, I don't know what's wrong with her and I'm scared by the thought of it being something serious like that. Is straining to defecate/urinate a symptom? I really appreciate anybody's replies!

She did eat grass and vomit yesterday, but the vomit was just saliva and grass. I think bowel obstructions involve vomiting, don't they?

Cats are very prone to urinary tract disoders, I had a cat die from it, I honestly recommend at least having your cat checked out.

I've got an appointment in 15 minutes in the nearest town, I'm not gonna make it on time!

Yeah, they do.

Hightail it to a vet, woman!

It sounds like a possible bladder blockage. I hope she turns out ok. :( When I moved my cat decided to stop pissing because of the other cat we had at the time and he blocked himself up. Cost me $900 to fix.

Back from the vet - she's got blood and crystals in her urine, which means cystitis. They've sent us home with some antibiotic paste and they took bloods to send off to make sure there's nothing else going on with her kidneys. They've sent away for some special food for her too.

She's also got gingivitis, which I had no idea about D: Poor little beb. Gonna have to have her teeth cleaned and feed her different, larger dry food.

So gonna get a call from the vet in a few days! Here's hoping the antibiotics will make it less painful for her to wizz and pass those crystals.

>drinking a lot of water
That can be a bad sign. Cats with kidney problems drink a LOT of water to flush their system. As a consequence of all that drinking, they also pee a lot. Is he peeing more frequently, in large amounts or peeing where he's not supposed to?

:) Haven't ruled out the existence of kidney problems, but it's most likely just the cystitis. Which in itself is bad, but not as bad as failed kidneys!

My cat has had failing kidneys for many years now, and he's still going strong. He's 21 years old now, and the only thing that seems to slow him down a bit is the arthritis in his back legs.

Congratulations on your good management of his condition! Most people don't recognise it until it's too late, which is what happened with Tia. :( It's a mistake that won't happen again, hopefully. I can only hope my cats will live to 21! After losing my dog of 13 years to cancer last year, I'm very aware I'll have to go through the same pain again and again and I don't want that to happen again so soon.

I was about to post in here about a kitten I adopted from the vet today, but I was just watching Gary go to the bathroom and she's got diarrhoea. Ver
]\0y watery, a delightful olive brown/green colour. The vet is going to call me tomorrow with the blood test results, so I'll report back and see what they say. ;_; She is drinking, but not all that interested in her food. Back to being super worried again...

*very, the kitten (pictured, as yet unnamed) walked on my keyboard and I forgot to edit it.

BUT! A note of hope I just found, the antibiotics say side effects include ptyalism, anorexia and DIARRHOEA.

Do you think it would be a good idea to give Gary wet food tonight to keep her fluids up for the dehydration caused by diarrhoea and cystitis? Or could that upset her usually delicate stomach more? :(

So probably nobody cares by now, but after more dramas they think Gary's got Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease. This is bad. Means her lifespan's going to be shorter, and she can only eat prescription food for the rest of her life or else she'll get sick... and even then I don't think it's sure that she'll be ok. D:

I'm too upset to post much but I wanted to let you guys know that Gary died. The vet was wrong and by the time I brought Gary back it was too late.
