I just got a new cat, and she keeps fighting with my roommate's cat. How can I get them to stop fighting without either of them hating me?

It may be too late for this, but...

Generally when you introduce a new cat to a "household" with an existing cat, the problem is that the existing pet (your roommate's cat) thinks that the house is his territory, and now you're bringing in a foreign interloper. Bad news.

The best thing to do is clean the apartment very well before introducing the new cat. This way it smells less like the existing cat which makes it less of a territorial issue.

I did clean everything really well yesterday before the cat came, but they still swat at each other, occasionally degrading to a brawl with teeth and claws involved. The major issue is that my roommates cat has been declawed, and my cat hasn't, so he(roommate's cat) can't defend himself.

You have usurped the authority of your roommate's cat. By ancient authority derived from cat law the roomie's cat has the right to seek revenge however it sees fit. This can include but is not limited to the torture and death of the new cat as well as the torture and death of anyone who played any part in the new cats arrival. In order to get to the truth of how this happened the roomie's cat is allowed to torture whomever it feels necessary to extract the truth of the matter.

You have violated cat law. You must be punished. May your roommate's cat show mercy upon you when that time comes.

I thought we weren't supposed to tell him that? It's no fun if the prey sees you coming. Now he'll be wary and cautious.

I have a similar question. I am about to be roomates with someone who has a cat. I have a small 13 pound dog who is pretty submissive and gets beat up easily. So if the two move in together will the cat hurt my dog or anything? I dont know anything about cats since I have never owned one. What would be the best way to introduce them?

just keep them in the same room for a couple weeks, one food and water bowl. They'll be vocal like hell for the first few days, but they'll slowly get used to the other's presence when they realize they're stuck with the other cat.

When your roommate isn't home, kill the fucking cat with some sort of poison. Make very sure to make it look like an accident.
