Hey /an/,

I have a cat about 2 years old now, and he is partly indoors/outdoors (outside at nights). He usually shows up every morning or so to get fed and then go to sleep somewhere in the house. However, since yesterday he hasn't showed up and I'm worried because last time this happened, his mother (the other cat in the picture) got hit by a car an hid in our basement for a day before I found her (which also led to us having to amputate her tail).

So, should I be worried? I love my cats and would hate to find him injured/dead somewhere.
>> Anonymous
Also, the one I'm talking about is the orange one.
>> Anonymous
This is exactly why if you want your cats to live long you keep them indoors. Not saying he's dead or hurt OP, it's just outdoor cats don't tend to do great.
>> Anonymous
you didn't learn from the traumatic injury to your other cat's tail that CATS BELONG INDOORS?!
>> Anonymous
i have a cat too, when i first got her i stood outside the door and left it ajar, when the cat came close, i blasted her with the hose. She runs from the door everytime I open it now, and I never worry about her being hit by a car
>> Anonymous
I have a cat that kind of does the same as yours except he has being doing it for over 10 years. Half the time my cat lives outside, and the other half he comes in to be with the family. I wouldn't say my cat is a genius or anything, but he has never been hurt by a car or anything. He does tend to disappear for a few days at a time every now and then, but so far he has always come back just fine.

>>297254
yeah, what about your OTHER indoor/outdoor cat, though, fuckstain?
>> Anonymous
OP here, yeah my cat showed up later today.

>>297210

Well I prefer to keep my cats indoors when they want to, but I also feel that being outdoors they get a greater sense of freedom, and I do live on the countryside.

>>297216

No you dickwad, cats should be able to go outdoors and explore if they want to. Of course there's the potential danger of cars and dogs but if they were really wild, there would be a lot more to worry about. Also, on average a wild cat lives about 3 years.
>> Anonymous
No yeah indoor/outdoor cats are awesome. I live when they come dirty or scabbed up from a fight, looking miserable. Or they limp for a few weeks because they probably did a backflip on the other side of town. Yeah shit is awesome!!!
>> hypothetical /k/ommando
>>297422

It really doesn't happen as often as you think.

The people it does happen to, tend to talk it up more. Or they're already crazy for their animals and wish they could have sex with them, so they treat them as something more than an animal.

I hope that they're not fixed. There's not enough stray cats around, your cats should be helping to breed some more.

ok, fuck. if youre gonna have a cat thats indoor and outdoor for GODS SAKE keep it in at NIGHT and let it out in the MORNING. if anything bad happens to it, its YOUR fault for being a dumb ass and not protecting it like a responsible owner should. do you know the type of things that could happen to it at night??? could get attacked by a wild animal easier. could get hit by a car in the dark cause no one can see it. could get attacked by some cracked out hobo wandering the streets, to name a few. you should be ashamed.

theres a difference between FERAL CATS and DOMESTICATED PET CATS for a reason. if you want an outdoor cat, get a feral cat. pet cats are SUPPOSED to be kept indoors and taken care of. freedom nothing. a cat can live a perfectly fun, healthy, normal life indoors. domestic cats learn to trust people, and cant fend for themselves as well as feral cats. if anything bad happens to your pet cat, its your fault.
>> Anonymous
Imprisoning cats indoors is cruel. You should get a hamster instead if that's the kind of pet you want.
>> Anonymous
>>297536
lmfaoooo oh yeah, thats sooo true.
fucking moron. its not cruel at all. what IS cruel is leaving your cat outside vulnerable to the elements, prey, cars, humans, etc. i had a cat that we let outside, and it got pneumonia. my other outdoor cat ran away and never came back. my other outdoor cat got STOLEN. my other outdoor cat got an eye scratch which caused her third eyelid to be exposed. my other cat climbed to the very top of a tall tree and FELL DOWN.

so much for letting them outdoors.

>which also led to us having to amputate her tail

cats can live without their tail?

OP here, surprised this thread's still alive :) but it's good reading your advice. My cat came home some days later, and seemed to be in good shape.

>>297533
Actually, Cats have a higher sense of hearing and seeing during nights. However, the headlights of a car can easily confuse the cat and paralyze it at times. Being nocturnal, I think the dangers to a cat are slimmer during night time than during the day, when human activity is also at its peak.

>>297541

Yes. Some people are concerned about if it affects their sense of balance, but the cats get used to it, and hasn't seemed to affect my cat. Also, I think there's a scottish breed of cats that don't have any tails at all.

keeping cats indoors is cruel and retarded and just simply shows the owners lack of dedication to TEACH the cat how to stay away from roads.
cats arent stupid they know how to look after themselves despite what you think about being domesticated they still have base instincts to survive, if its wet, they will find shelter, if theres something that is dangerous they will seek safer ground. ive had cats my entire life and not one of them has been an indoor only cat. all of which died of old age.

pull your heads out of your asses chucklefucks and realise its not your place to inprison these poor animals, just provide shelter and food when they are around, do this and they will return the favor with affection and company.

and how does one teach a cat to stay out of the road?

More anecdotal evidence that cats are fine outside, when it's been statistically proven that outdoor cats have significantly shorter lifespans, on average, than those kept indoors.

Imprisoning cats indoors? Please. You're the one with your cranium so far up your colon you're using your bellybutton for a porthole.

your argument is flawed. do people keep their children indoors? no they go out and play
you teach a cat to stay off roads by scaring it when it goes near them
this has worked consistantly for me.

cats are designed by nature to be indoor/outdoor

and one more time, for the slow lerning students such as yourself:

CATS ARE NOT HUMAN. They lack free will and self determination. Teach a cat to stay out of the road, fine. Then a really intersting leaf blows down the gutter on the opposite side of the street, and the cat goes to investigate. Or the neighbor's dog chases the cat for two miles. Or some vicious bastard child comes along and beats it with a baseball bat. But at least it will die happy, right? And then you can cry and moan, saying "but I TRAINED it!"

I can say the same thing about the Vietnamese because I don't speak moon and they don't speak English.

>> Or some vicious bastard child comes along and beats it with a baseball bat.

Then you find that child, you knock the kid unconscious, drag it back to your basement like that Australian guy, nick its carotid and watch as he slowly bleeds to death whimpering as tears stain its fat cheeks. Force it to watch as you remove the skin from its forearm and slap the child's face with the skin from its hand like a duellist holding a glove. Finally saw the fucking kid's head off.

That's the mildest punishment I can imagine for anyone intentionally harming a cat.

But your cat is still dead because you let it go outside.

Personally I think letting cats roam the neighborhood is irresponsible. It's fine if you manage to keep it in your backyard. But when they go and shit in people's yards or get into fights with other pets, that's not right. I remember when a cat came through our yard and my dog took a chunk out of it - sad, but? COMPLETELY avoidable if the owner could've been assed to keep it inside or at least enclosed. I keep all my cats inside for that very reason.

you just don't get how the planet works, do you?

Look, believe whatever the fuck you want about how animals are so "precious" and "deserve to be protected"..fine, whatever, do whatever you want in your little area.

in reality, we human beings are the most intelligent life form on this planet

Not only intelligent, we are also stronger than a lot of the animals that you and the rest of your "animal rights activist" friends try to save.

We humans have earned our right, through nature's laws, to live as kings of our domain, which is to say the ENTIRETY of the planet earth. We have the intelligence and strength to hunt, gather, and fend off possible predators. What we lack in individual strength or intelligence we can overcome with our tools and our sciences. According to nature's rules, if other creatures on this planet can't survive our rule, then they can go fuck themselves.

Animals other than ourselves are 2nd-rate at best. They can be companions, but they are property and NOT AS IMPORTANT AS A HUMAN BEING.

END OF STORY

now, I understand and agree that people abusing animals are sick in the head....but they don't deserve jail time at all, let alone more jail time than anyone accused of a crime that matters (one that is done to a fellow human being)..and your internet tough guy rant about what "should be done to these horrible people" is just a sad copypasta from every other internet tough guy about what they "would do to that sick fuck" if they caught him doing *insert social taboo here*

There's going to be a cure and I'm going to save it for myself because there's no way in hell I'm going to die without knowing each and every last one of my kind is truly and sincerely dead. Along the way I'm going to be opening up the doors of abandoned homes so the pets can escape into the wild and have a fighting chance, even the stupid pugs doomed with extinction, and once again the planet will fall quiet.

I had an indoor cat for 20 years. Oddly enough it didn't "disappear", get hit by a car, get internal parasites, get mauled to death, or drink antifreeze. Of course the poor thing was deprived of the pleasures of shitting in peoople's yards, killing local wildlife, eating large quantities of grass and then puking it up, fighting other cats in territorial disputes, drinking poison, and laying around and doing nothing... basically, ALL the things cats do outside. I have two indoor cats that are perfectly healthy and happy. They don't want to go outside, so they don't. They get enough activity, enrichment, and attention inside my house so that they don't crave going outside.

If you feel like your cat is going to severely miss out on something by not going outdoors, I'm inclined to think that you are either lazy, neglectful, or you just don't care that much about the welfare of your animals. Have I had healthy outdoor cats before? Yes, and they led long lives. But I'm old enough to own my own and formulate my own opinions, and I believe that a cat who refuses to live indoors peacefully is one that the owner creates.. whether through lack of spaying/neutering, appropriate environment and activities, or a combination of both.

the trouble is you people are forcing your pet to stay indoors because you're too selfish. You're forcing your cat to stay inside just to make it easier for you. If cats belonged indoors they would be an animal that builds its own shelter, this is clearly not the case. Obviously the location you live in can change this, its common sense to keep your cat indoors if there are common feline eating predators in your area.
The point is letting a cat go outside isnt cruel, if its cold it will come inside and territorial fights are part of a cats life. Im sure any animal humans included would live longer if forced to stay inside away from any form of danger their entire life, however that wouldnt be much of a life in my opinion.
You just have to face facts that cats can get hit by cars or attacked by dogs, You could argue the opposite way and say that keeping your cat indoors is risky in case your house caught on fire. anyone ever hear of the darwinian theory of evolution? humans wernt put on earth to be cats protectors they can take care of themselves.

You have to actually give a shit about them enough to keep them entertained and safe.

Shut the fuck up. Are you kidding me? Cats are DOMESTICATED. HUMANS bred them. They wouldn't exist without us. They aren't supposed to take care of themselves.

Why "accept" the fact that your cat could get mauled when you can just keep him inside where he's perfectly happy and healthy?

Jesus christ how do you retards breathe?

Lulz. OP Here, this thread has gotten way out of hand XD

But nevertheless, flame wars are funny to read.

Sheesh, I keep my cats outdoors at nights. That is, if they're not sick, injured or somehow too scared of going outside (for whatever reason). Also, it gets about -15 here in the winter so some nights I keep them inside because they would just freeze if they went outside for a night.

If you live in america and where there are considerably more wild predators than where I live, then I understand that you prefer keeping your cat inside. But I let them go outside, and they often want to go outside as well.

In the end, they are my cats, but I often think to myself that cats should be able to experience the wildlife and even though they have been bred by humans for thousands of years, they are still animals, and just like you can adapt a zoo-born lion to the savannah, you can adapt a cat to nature.

Funny that, why are feral feline populations so large? Obviously they're more than capable of surviving without human intervention.
Now if you go ahead and declaw them, allow them to grow fat, diabetic and complacent with gluten kibble then a pet cat will certainly suffer a far greater doom once>>298298's plans come to fruition. Congratulations you have a ten year old kitten rather than an adult cat!
But if your cat goes outdoors on a regular basis, can hold his/her own against various wild beasts and feral cats only to come home and mark you as their territory to express gratitude for free meals and a warm place to sleep during the winter.
Certainly this cat will not look back as you convulse in the doorway while your body is ravaged with a 105F/40C fever, choking on your liquified innards boiling up your oesophagus from the expanding gas in your gut.
Cats are companions, not pets. They are individuals not idiotic servitors like dogs who worship humanity like a deity despite being kicked and having their collective faces rubbed into their own shit because of the neglect by humans who are too fucking busy downloading torrents of salty milk than realize if they put a dog on a leash outdoors for five minutes the carpet will fucking stay clean.
Fucking feral dogs are no better than the homeless, begging and grateful for any kind of handout because they're incapable of foraging and hunting to sustain themselves since canines have grown complacent having garbage cans and dumpsters.

Why the fuck should you "adapt a cat to nature."??? They nature is not where domesticated species belong, especially predatory species, and even more so SMALL predatory species that can both force other species toward extinction through unnatural predation AND be harmed or killed themselves, due to their small size?

You are completely illogical.
>> lollilops
>>299042
When I say they wouldn't exist, I mean that they would've never come into existence because humans bred and domesticated them. Feral cat populations aren't natural, they're stray domesticated cats that wouldn't have ever subsisted if cats had never been domesticated in the first place. Well namefag, apparently you didn't read my response. I did not rejoinder your ill-composed>>298680with "OLOLOOLOLLOL HUMINS MAED CATTES :3"
Feral cats and outdoor cats are quite capable of holding their own in the wild. Populations are large because folks don't fix their pets and they're right when they believe a cat will survive on his/her own.
You completely avoided my argument that cats are better suited to living in the wild than most dogs which have been bred to be emotionally stunted, submissive and to have bizarre forms to suit the aesthetics of fanciers.
>> Anonymous
>>299058
Actually, feral cat colonies in the wild grow because cats are prolific breeders. Feral cats generally live no more than five years, but in those five years have eight or nine litters of several kittens each. Also, feral cat "survival" means predation on native wildlife species.
>> lollilops
>>299058
You obviously didn't comprehend my meaning in>>298680, so I reiterated it for slow people in my response.

Sure, cats can live outside. Sure, they can hunt well. But the fact of the matter remains that people domesticated cats. And that was my argument against>>298519's poorly constructed argument. You apparently lack any ability to read and follow.

The opposite of cat is dog to be blunt and ineptly applying Occam's Razor. I used the comparison between species to underscore the potential for survival without humans. I love dogs, not in that way, and believe they're fun people but in the end I'd rather have a companion rather than a slave. Sadly human society forces me to keep a dog as a subject rather than a peer with leash laws and such. I'd much prefer if I could let my dog roam free at night and go for walks with my dog without a leash.
>> Anonymous
>>299058
>>299061
In the U.S. you don't get established feral cat populations living far from human establishments where the native predators have been pushed back because they, as a species, CAN'T survive in the wild. Living in junkyards, ghettos, and farms =/= "surviving in the wild". Cats are capable hunters but are shit when it comes to avoiding being killed and eaten themselves. The only time feral cats manage to establish themselves independent of humans is in places where there are no larger predators where they completely wreck the established ecosystem.

uh personally i think there's a major difference based on what kind of cat you have as well. I have mongrel(or whatever you call it) cat i picked up from the kennel when she was a kitten and try as i might i could not keep her indoors for the life of me, i even put netting all over the grills, windows and doors.
I should have figured that would be the case however since the way i choose this cat of mine was that while i was at the kennel looking around she managed to climb all the way to the top of her pen(which was taller then me), somehow loosened the netting and got out and came running after me. How do you say no to that?

I eventually decided to just let her do what she wanted as i figured she was old enough (about a year old) to take care of herself. I've had her for two years and she comes and goes when she pleases but knows enough to come home by nightfall or she'll get locked out, she's never been gone for more then a day.

I don't know how it is with pure breed cats and the like since i've never had any, but based off the cats that i have had i think they know what it is they want and likely know enough to take care of themselves. So just let them do whatever.
