Hey /an/,
my partner is getting a staff terrier.

We already have 2 cats.
I don't like dogs very much, i have no idea how to handle it, and it's just a puppy. I don't know what i should think about spending 15 years of my life with a dog.

Halp?

uh... why is your partner committing you to an animal that you have no desire to have? Why are you allowing it?

Because i'm rarely ever at home, in contrary to him.

Plus, our house was broken into, and he said he wanted a dog to prevent this.

sounds like shit to me. This is going to affect the next 15 years of your life, and shouldn't be a one-sided decision any more than the decision to have children should. Also, he has chosen a breed long associated with animal aggression, and you have existing cats... perhaps an unpleasant mix.

Yeah, but he was all like "It's all about how we raise the dog, it's not agressive by nature" etc etc.

I don't know, i think i will adapt to it, but maybe not :\ Will it work if he's the only one actively takign care of the dog?

the dog won't bond with or respect you, and respect is vital with bully breeds. And contrary to your partner's naive opinion, it's NOT all in how you raise them. Behavior and temperament are decided by equal measures of nature and nurture, rearing and genetics. The best trained and loved dog can still turn out to be a bloody nightmare, and the best training can't overcome hundreds of years of genetic memory and ancestral traits.

My roommate got a staffy and let me tell you what. I have a cat and if the dog is raised from a pup with the cat, then you should be alright.

BUT

That being said, this breed NEEDS a disciplined owner who will be consistent with obedience training. Staffs are very smart and energetic - be prepared to have the shit annoyed out of you for the first year; fail as a trainer, the next 15 years.

tl;dr - great dog but must commit 110% to training.
