Could I make a cheapo version of this?

My cats love home made toys best, Currently their favorite is a cardboard star on a length of areal wire, on a stick. Flies erratically enough it really excite them.

Probably. I've seen versions that were a round tube with holes cut in the sides so the cats could see the ball but not extract it. I'm sure that'd be easy to rig up. Then you could set some carpet or corrugated cardboard in the middle and be good to go.

The turbo scratcher is a complete waste of money. A full grown cat can't even fit on it, and constantly pulls the little ball out of it's run.

on I dunno, mine still play with theirs, yea they're too big for the center part (that's just a scratching pad anyhow), but they sit on either side batting the ball back and forth to each other. It was definitely a favorite from kitten hood.

?? My cats have never pulled the ball out. Even now that they're just about full grown, they love to flip out on it and the scratching insert. One of them is a 15lb maine coon. We've had the thing for years now and it's still going strong. It was worth the money.

A maine coon and it couldn't pull the ball out?
I guess my cat must be hella tenacious then.

It might just be playstyle. He likes to lay on his side and smack the ball around at a million miles an hour. I've only seen him get his paws around it once or twice.

I have a bunch of feathers at the end of a rod with an elasticated string.

My cat's figured out that he is technically wrestling for control over the setup, and walks around proudly whenever he manages to pull it so hard that I let go.

Everything that's made of paper tissue lying around in my room.
I regularly RAGE when my cat destroys something there and throw her out, and that happens pretty often -.-

this

also, plastic bags, little fake mice, and my socks. If my sock drawer is open even just a tiny bit, she'll push it open the rest of the way, steal every single one of my goddamn socks, and hide them all over my room (usually behind my TV and in her basket).

And laser pointers, too.

Fuck all those useless expensive cat toys. My cats are endlessly entertained by Q-tips and wire ties.

my kitten has a bunch of little blue mice. some end up under the stove so they stay whole for a while, but she has one that has the fabric ripping on the bottom, one eye, no tail, and it's covered in dog spit, but she just loves that thing. she doesn['t like the oragne or green or purple ones, she just likes that old nasty mouse.

My miniature poodle only wants to play with two slippers I grew out of shortly after we got her.
It's not a lack of toys, we gave her squeaky toys, soft toys, rattly toys, rubber, cloth, and yet the ONLY thing she will ever play with are those two slippers.
She pushed them behind herself, shakes them around, and chews on them to clean her teeth.

I have a cat with that "favorite toy" complex. She has this disgusting looking stuffed mini Santa Claus that she carries around and will actively hide it from the other cats so they can't play with it.
If the other cats DO play with it she comes up, bops them on the head and takes it from them and goes to hide it.

Had a chihuahua like that. She had this stuffed monkey that she loved. She was so jealous of it, you couldn't get within 5 feet of it. She would actually attack the Doberman over it.

Mine too. I don't know where one of my cats keeps finding these black twist ties, but goddamn if there isn't a new one on the bed weekly.

Aside from shit they're not supposed to be playing with (furniture, live hamsters, cables to expensive electronics, my hair), one of my cats likes Play-N-Squeak mice. She'll walk around the house with one in her mouth and utter muffled meows to let us know that she caught one.

My cat is on his third one. He keeps killing the voice box. He loves the little bugger. You'll hear it go off at four in the morning because he's sleeping with it.

Laser pointers, peacock feathers, and things moving under blankets--I used to wiggle my toes at night but I had to stop because my cat took this as a sign to play with whatever was moving under there.

He also used to like playing with those clear capsule balls you get out of vending machines.

My wheaten terrier sure loves his plastic ball on on a rope. He lets other dogs pull the rope while he grabs the other end.

My cat does the same thing. There are little clear capsules all over our house and basement. She also enjoys tinfoil balls. She'll play with anything she can bat around though. She goes nuts over the laser though. Pic related.
A cat I used to have loved Styrofoam balls and used to eat my mom's cigarettes.

Laser pointers and the plastic rings that come off of milk jugs when you open them.

Also, on rare occasions I'll spritz a plushie toy of hers with catnip oil, -and- rub some fresh dried catnip on her kitty tree, the plushie, and her favorite blanket ... She goes absolutely batshit insane for about fifteen minutes, killing the plushie like it insulted her mother.

One cat prefers string. She won't bother with the catnip mouse or the feather on the end, just the string. The other loves plastic bags. It's fun putting one just on the threshold to the kitchen door. She'll charge it full-barrel, pounce, and then proceed to slide on it across the kitchen floor. Her sort of 'HOLY FUCK WHAT THE HELL' expression at the end is worth it every time.
