Declawing Anonymous
Why is it that after I tell idiots that declawing is bad for cats, they still want to mutilate their animals?
>> Anonymous
because they have never had their own nails ripped out. fix it for them. thats what I do, they don't declaw their pets after that.
>> Anonymous
Because they probably do not know that not only the nail is removed, but the first portion of their finger. Some cats respond HORRIBLY to this, some get depressed.
Also, that is their only fucking defense. Your cat finds itself up against another cat, or raccoons, it is fucked. Thats like taking away a man's gun and knife.
Even if you have a solely indoor car, there's always a chance they'll escape.

Have you told them this?

hmmm so your saying I should take away part of their finger too? I haven't been doing enough apparently. time to get to work.

All that AND I showed them pictures and told them it can cause litter problems, behavior problems, back problems for the cat, etc. I even gave them suggestions on how to train the cat not to scratch. Funny thing is, all the people I've talked to about this had SHITTY houses with shitty furniture. Definitely not worth hurting an animal over.

Because these people just don't give a shit about what the cat feels. They're empathy-deficient. A lot of people are like that. To them anything that can't speak fluently is just lifeless property.

I actually get along just fine without a gun and combat knife.
I've also had my own nails ripped out. It hurts without anesthetic, but not with.

shit, my indoor car escaped, too! Has anyone seen a blue Toyota hatchback, answers to "fluffy"?

but srsly, I got my cat from the Humana society and she was declawed by her previous owner. My two subsequent cats either came that way or declawed because of the others.

My cat was declawed. I got her when I was 10 and my mom insisted on it. This was before we had the internet and I'd only heard rumors of how horrible it was, so while I fought a bit I gave up and let her do it. It's not like it mattered for the furniture because my mom was always locking her down in the basement whenever she could, until three years ago when she came down with a heart condition that should have been diagnosed earlier. She collapsed down a staircase and no one woke me or thought to take her to a vet. I finally lost it, flipped the fuck out and screamed til my throat was hoarse at my mom. From then on, she stayed upstairs and I got to treat her like a princess. Until 4 months ago when, despite lots of expensive meds, she died of the heart condition.

tl;dr: my kitty died and I miss the fuck out of her and feel guilty for not preventing her declawing. :,(

I thought this was about your mom until I saw the word vet at the end of the sentece. :P

I might be getting a cat soon, so this thread is probably a good place to ask...

I will be getting the cat from the local animal shelter. I'm definitely not planning on declawing the cat, but do you guys advise against getting one that has already been declawed?

Some asshole in my neighborhood declawed their cat...with the intention of letting it be an OUTDOORS cat!!! Needless to say a year or so ago, another neighbor's dog got a hold of it and killed it. It had no way to fight back.

The sad thing is that it might even have been able to escape if it had its claws. A clawless cat can't climb at all.

>>212439
wouldn't "vet" make you assume that it was the mom too?
>> Anonymous
Because they think God gave them animals to use however they please and they're a dumbass, because they don't care about causing preventable pain to something else and they're a sadist, or because they still think it's better than actually training the cat and are a waste of human life.

I just mention and/or show them all the damage my declawed cat has done to my furniture to prove to them that declawing does very little to stop a determined cat from being destructive.

Whats been done, has been done.
I say go for it before some dumbass adopts one and lets it outside. Chances are that it'll have a better home with you.
