Hi /an/

I am a cat person, I grew up only with cats, I have a cat now. Cats I understand and I know how to act/react towards. But dogs? They make me nervous, mostly because I don't speak their language.

I'm visiting my partner's family in a months time, and most of them have dogs, mostly of the smaller kind. Could someone teach me basic dog 101? How do I introduce myself, react if they get aggressive, etc.

pic unrelated, it is my lump of a cat.

show no fear and do not corner them. if you're afraid of em, don't touch them. don't feed them after midnight and if you put them in water, they multiply. also don't bury them in the old pet semetary, sometimes dead is better.

Let them smell you when you get close. If you shoo them away while they are trying to smell you, they'll be suspicious of you. Also don't stare at them when you first see them, idk why but if they don't know you, staring get dogs pissed

Jesus christ, it's just a god damn dog. You walk up and pet the thing on the head.

If they're small dogs, they should be easy to deal with. They'll be hyper, most likely. Don't go to them, but you can squat and let them come to you. If they're friendly, they'll love to be scratched, and may even follow you around a lot. Dogs are much more into shadowing you than cats. If they growl, walk away, and don't look them in the eye. Watch their tails and ears. Upright ears and wagging tail=goooood. Tail in between their legs and ears back = nervous and possibly angry, proceed with caution. It's best to be on their level when first meeting a dog, and letting them sniff you. You seem less of a threat this way. Good luck!

When you first meet, hold your palms open and flat towards the dog. this will show him that there's no point bugging you since you don't have any treats. also, he'll get to smell you properly, as adviced above.

If you meet one over the skies of France, don't show any fear. Remember, your Fokker can outclimb him so try to use that to your advantage.
