Howdy /an/.

Soon I will have a job, and then I will want to buy a pet.

I already have a cat, but it's more the families, he's LONG and big but lazy and angry, very unsocial, but also tame because we regularly feed Magpies and he does nothing, he's not interested in killing animals.

So! I bring to you a question, I want a rodent of some type, even a rabbit or reptile.

I was thinking a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, because myself and my family love them, but I'm interested in a pet for myself, rather than my family, something small I can keep in my room and play with.

So I saw a Chinchilla in the Ferret thread, and was instantly blown away by how cute it was.

But my biggest problem with rodents is, I had a Mouse and it smelt pretty bad because it was always excreting, cleaning its cage was a hassle and it's pretty easy to lose so I could not have it run around the room.

So is there a rodent that doesn't crap itself every 5 seconds, is playful, will happily roam around my room and doesn't have to be restricted to a cage for the majority of the time.

No such thing. Rodents make awful pets. Rats are mildly more tolerable.

Rabbits are good if you're willing to do a LOT OF RESEARCH. They're not just something to stick in a hutch and take out when you want to.

Op here.

Well good old Wikipedia says at least Chinchilla's excrement is dry, so cleaning isn't a big problem, if it doesn't do it every 5 seconds that would be alright.

I'm not expecting an animal that doesn't crap at all, but one that does it on a regular basis like normal creatures.

Also, I listen to a lot of loud music, so that may be a problem for an animal with sensitive hearing.

Chinchillas can meet all your criteria, so long as you're extremely picky in buying one, and make sure it has a amicable temperament.

They can be extremely affectionate and well adjusted, but the flip-side is always there.

As for roaming around, well, the other problem with rodents is their teeth. Not only do they have to chew things, they like to chew things. Chin-proofing would have to happen.

They're rather smart, and can use litterboxes if raised (Possibly trained) to do so. That isn't to say you're going to get a cat with the best hair around, though.

Do your research, you can get a few opinions here on /an/, but there's whole communities dedicated to nearly whatever pet may cross your mind.

well, I'd have to disagree there, I've had rats before, and they're great pets, they're quite friendly, and nice. You can let them run around the house, or border off a section of house, and it doesn't take much to keep them away from power cables and that.

I feel like all the rodent-type pets will disspoint you in the "doesn't poop every 5 seconds" department. Chins poop a shit load, including all over the room when they're out of the cage. However, because it is rather dry it's less gross than say, rat poop (which is unfortunate because rats have better personalities than chins 99% of the time). Invest in a hand held vacuum if you get a chin.

Also, yeah they'll run around and look cute but they're not "playful" in any meaningful sense.

Rats are my pref for rodents. I have a lone male, which is pretty rare for rats (you usually wanna have two or more), but he's an ass to pretty much any other critter that isn't me. He knows his name, comes when called, and drags his food bowl over when it's nom-time. I can play with him the way you'd play with a dog, rolling him onto his back and scratching his stomach and so forth.

Only thing with males is that they piss on you a lot - not epic amounts, just a dot here and a dot there to let any other rat that comes along that you belong to someone else.

Would this stop if I got it neutered? Otherwise he sounds like an awesome pet.

Pee dribbling is pretty common in both sexes of rats so I dunno if neutering would halt it completely. Maybe tone it down some. It doesn't smell or anything though.

Rat poop is still just little raisins unless they've got upset systems. It's not runny or anything, easily picked up. I don't have any rats now but most of the ones I had would not poop or pee outside of their cages.

I really wouldn't recommend chinchillas. Everything I've heard about them makes them sound too aloof and delicate. You can really rough up a rat and they'll love it. Like>>207096, my rats were always super fond of hand wrestling.

I had a female I would let loose in my game room while I played N64. She'd wait until I was playing to come jump all over my hands and be a complete nut. When I put the controller down and tried to play with her, she'd run and hide. Goofy little critter.
