I was out the other night testing out a new camera, when a spiderweb in the corner of an abandoned building caught my eye. I knelt down, and snapped a few macro shots of it. It was too dark to see the spider very well, so after taking my photos (which seemed to scare the spider) I headed home.

When I checked out the photos, I noticed a red hourglass-looking shape on the spider's underbelly. So I googled Black Widows. Most of the pictures I see online have much larger abdomens than the one in my pic though. So what is this spider? Just an undersized black widow, or something similar?

Maybe a male widow? They're supposed to be smaller than the females.

Just looks to be undersized. Male widows are brown.

Dunno. It's likely still there, since it had an elaborate web set up. But I'm actually very scared of spiders, and would never have tried to get the photo if I'd known it was a black widow.

What's the upshot? Do they even make interesting pets?
