I can attest to the runaway part, but they generally come back, if they can. They're insatiable about following scents and once they pick up one that is interesting to them, they go nuts, wanting to track it down. Brother's beagle used to springboard off a 8 foot wooden fence, to jump over a 6 foot wire fence, then he'd be off and running. He'd vanish for an hour to a couple days, but would always return. He'd sit outside the front door, yelping and scratching at the door, to let people know he was home.
Oh, and the yelping, yalping, bark, whatever you wanna call it. That, can get horribly annoying, especially late in the middle of night, when they suddenly start feeling all wired with energy. Besides those two traits, all the beagles that I've been exposed to, are all pretty smart, lovable and playful dogs.
