So, what is the difference between a turtle and a tortoise?
I was taught that a turtle has flippers and that a tortoise has feet, but obviously if both of these are considered turtles then I am wrong.

Turtles are water based
Tortoises are land based

Its just americans cant remember the difference so they call them all turtles.

Um, no. It depends on where you're from; in America, it is actually correct to use turtle as the generic name, and tortoises are just the land-dwelling turtles. In British English, the two terms are a bit more mutually exclusive. But neither way is definitively "right," it just depends on where you're from. See link.

All tortoises are turtles, but not all turtles are tortoises. Technically tortoises are turtles.

Just as a shark is still a fish, you just don't normally call it one.
