I had one that lived for 15 years. They aren't hard to take care of at all. In fact, Chinchillas have several advantages that make them desireable pets: their waste hardly smells at all. Their fur is so dense that fleas and other parasites can't live in it becasue they suffocate (one less problem to worry about). And their food is inexpensive and easily found.
However, like many pets they do have certain needs you have to be aware of.
Chinchillas need a calm enviornment. If you live in a quiet household then it's no problem. But, if where you live has lots of people coming and going, parties, friends coming over to hang out all the time, small children running about, people yelling at the TV while the football game is on, etc, that's a recipe for disaster.
