So I just saw a short documentary on hyenas on National Geographic a few hours ago.

I never really cared one way or the other for them until now. I always just figured them to be Africa's version of dingos, and by that I mean boring and irrelevant to my interests.

On the contrary, they really are quite awesome.

looks like a wolf spider to me. doesn't anybody know how to google????

Spotted hyenas are really fucking awesome. Damn shame that they don't get enough credit.
I slightly blame the Lion King for making everyone assume that they are cowardly scavenging dogs. They aren't even related to canines.

ACTUALLY GUISE, I THINK GOOBOO MADE THAT POST TO SHOW HOW /AN/ IS BEING CONSTANTLY BOMBARDED WITH "WTF KIND OF SPIDER IS THIS?" THREADS, AND THEY ARE ALWAYS WOLF, HOUSE, OR HOBO SPIDERS

Spotted hyenas are very interesting and cool animals. They're not related to canids at all, in fact their closest relatives are mongooses and meerkats. Hyenas have the strongest jaws of any land animal, able to break the femur of an elephant. Their clans are very close-knit and are much more stable and peaceful than lion prides, though there are sometimes hierarchy or breeding disputes. Hyenas hunt more often than lions do, and they're good at it, having a body designed for chasing and tiring out prey means they pursue for the long haul rather than the sprint. Of course they scavenge, but nearly all predators do.

Lions and hyenas have a blood hatred of each other, going so far as to almost go to war against each other. As the two top predators of Africa, their only rivals are each other and they let it be known (at least The Lion King got that part right).

Apparently they have very very strong jaws, for chewing bones or something.

I dont think they hunt much for themselves though.

The "cowardly scavenger" image of hyenas is way older than that, iirc...

They all have penises. Even the girls, kinda.

Any species with that many penises is a good species in my book.

damnit bitter, why is it always about penises with you?

I post in plenty of threads and don't mention penises.

Dammit, we've already had this discussion on /tg/.

pretty things, aren't they? :O

Indeed. Spotted hyenas are one of the few species where all the females are counter-traps (not to mention the dominant sex). They even give birth through the "penis", which I've understood is both painful and risky.

yes but can they bite through tank armor?

I believe we might have been watching the same documentary.

I've never really been interested in them.

In fact, I'm still not interested in them.

It's quite possible that spotted hyenas are about as intelligent as chimps. A lot of people who have studied them, including Jane Goodall (who's more famous for studying chimps) seem to think so.

That is an excellent measurement and point of comparison. Others good measures are:

Children: Use as a measure of capacity. A good microwave can hold one baby minimum. A car trunk should be able to hold four, maybe five, unbound toddlers, or two bound hookers.

Velociraptors: When considering any purchase, always ask "Will this kill a velociraptor?". This applies to everything from weapons to appliances. For example, a good microwave will not only hold a baby, but it should be sturdy enough to bash in the skull of a dinosaur.

Nothing can kill a Velociraptor, concidering the fucking things are already extinct.

"If there was a velocirapor, would this thing kill it?" is the implied semantic content of the statement.

I was a boy scout. "Always be prepared", and all. However, if you are unable to keep a child for measuring purposes, use your forearm. For most people (unless you are some kind of freak), it is roughly the same size. Besides, if it turns out your measurement is a bit on the small side.. you can MAKE the baby fit.

Indeed! It's troodon that you need to worry about, really, but most people don't recognize them. That's how they get you. You think "Oh it's just a lizard the size of a housecat, I shall ignore it and turn my back. I sure hope nothing swarms over me and eats me alive." But you'd be wrong. They will. And they will laugh.

The past, forever locked in regret. But what if the past could be changed?
Five years have come and gone since the night that saw the end of the world. My world. The guys needed someone to start one little fight with. They chose me. I was to move with my Auntie and Uncle in Bel-Air, so I whistled for a cab. I left when we pulled up to the house, Carlton was living there. And that's when it came. There'd be no second chance. It was Sunday, April 14th. Too late, you see, for the Banks family, for me. What if my Mom hadn't got scared? What if the past could be changed? What then?

Is it true that they have the strongest bites? I keep hearing that its alligators, tasmanian devils, jaguars, hyenas etc. As if no one can make up their fucking minds.
