Hello /an/.

My crappy 70's era apartment complex has a ton of cats. People have them when they move in, then suddenly realize it's an extra $200 or something a month to have them inside, so they're suddenly 'outside cats' and leave them on their own.

I don't particularly like cats, but I don't hate them either, and I hated seeing them just abandoned in the cold, so what do I do? Put out a little warm milk, buy and put out some cat food (kitten food if I see a little one), put up a tarp around my little 'back porch' area to keep out some rain and put some milk crates with old towels outside next to the wall.

I've been doing this for... like 6 months or longer, but suddenly my tub of a manager knocks on my door and she says there's too many cats around and if I leave out food and keep an 'environment' for them it'll just draw them here along with possums and raccoons. (Which I have never seen in the area in my 10 years living in this city.) Then she threatens that if I take care of them, it could be said they're MY cats and she could charge ME for them. That's $200 something for like 5-8 cats.

I hate people.

What a stupid-shit policy.
A cat isn't going to cause any damage the inside of a self furnished apartment that a land lord needs to concern themselves with...
Good god, what a twat.

Could you maybe set up a little shelter off of the premises?

Put some food on her porch and leave a note saying: charge yourself!

(also take a dump and pretend it was a huge cat's)

Me too, you should eat them.

Look at it from her perspective. Her buisiness investment (the apartment complex) is deteriorated in value if it has a cloud of derelict felines living in it.

If you don't have plans to care for any/all of them long term it'd be best to just get an animal shelter to take them. Then they stand a chance at getting a solid home.

She probably shouldn't charge 200$ a month to keep a cat indoors, then.

As a visitor to shelters... i can promise you that no one adopts adult cats.
Perhaps in fall/winter they would, because there are little to no kittens for adoptions... but there are many, many adult cats who go years without adoption. Especially black cats. I really would NOT do this unless it is a no-kill shelter...
If OP lives in a city, there is even less of a chance for these cats to go to a better home.

Also, arn't these cats still pets? If i read OP correctly, they are not disowned, but just outdoor cats. Be rather cruel to just up and take them to a shelter, even if their living conditions arn't the greatest.

I don't see how. This apartment complex is surrounded by three others and fences, and on the last side is a market and a busy road.

>>337427
Would be tempted if it wouldn't be so obvious. The.. food bit.

>>337428
Still have some crackers, maybe later.

She's not the owner of the complex, just the manager, and she does crap with it. I had to force the issue of getting a new stove and fridge when my 70's era ones gave out, lets bushes grow out so they scrap cars that pass while cutting down a nice 90+ year-old tree because it made the area 'too dark', lets people double park, doesn't clean up any garbage so the driveway always looks like crap, and more related to the issue at hand, won't put blocks/insulation of any kind up so the cats can't get under the buildings; so instead they largely sleep, fight and pee down there cause she doesn't want to put up some plywood.

The shelter thing... maybe I should. I've been to the local humane shelter and it's nice enough, if crowded, but these are mainly nice cats and they'll be killed if no one chooses them.

I'm in a mid-sized city. And yeah, they're technically people's pets. It's just that I rarely see anyone do anything for them.

Maybe you could call animal control or something of that nature? Something that gets her in trouble... because her policies are putting this animals in danger. Though, i'd really not like to see these cats get dragged off to a shelter where, lets be honest, they'd most likely be killed.
I'm very much doubting any one with authority would really care enough to do anything about this..

Cat pee = lots of ammonia... By the description of the state of this place, i doubt she'll care about something like that. But, if it's bad enough, and if there are dead cats under the building, she could get in deep shit.

Hmm... I think maybe I'll take my flashlight and take a peek... and hopefully not get my face scratched off while doing so.

Just had a thought.

I'll contact the owner tomorrow, telling them about the manager threatening me about a fee for keeping cats inside when I'm not, and am merely taking care of them.

Has anyone read the picture's story (if none of you realised, the white lines are sentances..)

My Nana is exactly the same ( Nana is another word for Grandma, if you didn't know.. ) She lives in a relativley poor area... The kind of people related to gangsters, not gangsters themselfs.. I wouldn't call her poor though.

years ago, 1 stray cat would stay around her hour every now and then, More cats came everyday, Now she has a small shelter for over 100 cats, Her neighbours call her teh Crazy cat lady, And everything.
Shes not crazy, Shes not evil, Shes nice, Yet people are assholes to her, just for trying to help Things that cna't survive, because of the changes to our planet, made by us.

I dont hate the changes we have made, Some / Most of them are needed.

I hate people too :S

Called the owner. I don't have to worry about being fined, but I am to stop putting food out cause of possible wild animals.

You've never read Ugly before? It's classic.

you should stop keeping it outside but maybe you can set up like a feeding schedule where once or twice a day you put food down for a little bit on the pretense of sitting outside reading a book or something
