/an/, I'm on the horns of a dilemma.

I'm looking at all these caturday threads, week after week, month after month of UNBEARABLE cat pictures, and though i've always had the inkling in my mind, it comes to this:

I AM AN ANIMAL LOVER THAT HATES CATS.

i mean seriously. I think cats are possibly the most ungrateful pets ( i would know, i've had a few that i disliked )and I personally think it's like gratefully accepting a roommate that eats your food, wrecks your stuff, and acts blameless the entire time.

I'm much more of a dog person. looking and thinking about it, My ex girlfriend had 4 cats, and a dog. she left her dog out in any kind of weather, and when she brought her in, left her in a moldy, wet with cockroaches and other vermin, while the cats are treated as if they OWN her.

and yet and still, when her cat had to be put down i sat and listened while she whined and bitched for months about it.

my question is this, /an/

am i a heartless person for disliking cats? is there something good about them that I'm missing? or is it really how i say, and are they the most angering animals to ever exist and fuck up your couch?

because as it stands, i see NO REASONS to like cats.

Cats are not really as good friends as dogs, but they are cute to look at and are very easy to take care of. They are like selfish spoiled brats that never mature, but that is because cats don't live in societies in the wild and by domesticating them you simply prevent them for ever becoming independent, effectively turning them into selfish spoiled brats. They are hardly the worst pets ever, seeing as how you would get the same or even worse results if you tried domesticating most other wild animals, seriously humanity got lucky with dogs.

>> tigerfeather !CrwtTbFNxQ
It really depends on how you raise your cat and the cat's inherent personality. Also, if you have an outdoor or indoor/outdoor cat, you're more likely to have an "STFU" cat. I have two indoor-only kitties, and they are clingy and want attention. They greet me and my finace when we come home, and will come when called. In fact, one of them is very active and needs stimulation, she she's leash trained and clicker trained to do tricks.

Would a cat take a bullet for you? Hell no. A cat would pull the trigger. A dog would though. Dogs are completely selfless, all they want is a warm bed, a few treats and a long walk. Cats want the whole God damned house. Fuck cats.

It's well known that dictators hate cats while geniuses and humanists love them. I've always thought it has a lot to do with what you expect from your fellow men... err, beings.

^^ see above.

unfortunately, It's not very convincing, yes your cat may like you, but from my experience with cats, if you like the cat it hates you, yet if you're allergic or dislike it, it seems to love you.

the cat across the street loves me. i wish it would just go the fuck home

and to>>94171, what kind of retard actually says that to pets? i just think that it's because dogs are smart enough to recognize patterns in human speech, and loyal enough to obey comamnds.

i mean, a guy in our neighborhood threw a cat out his car window, and a friend and I basically took it in.

i don't mind kittens. they're all cute, and for the most part they're affectionate and somewhat appreciative ( this is banking from my experience, mind you)

but CAT that we took in i just got sick of, and refused to let back in the house. it's still around, but it's officially a stray now.

Cats seem to love people who are allergic or hate cats, because the cats themselves hate being stared at and hassled, which is what cat lovers do to them. Staring at a cat is threatening, looking away is a friendly gesture to them. When they see somebody trying to avoid them, they think that person is actually someone worth spending time with.

I think it's pretty much like this: dominating people hate cats, as they can't be dominated and generally don't recognize authority. Nurturing people on the other hand love cats, since they look cute and act like babies.

You are not alone. I share your feeling with regards cats, and know others who feel likewise. I hear it again and again that cats have personality and character when my own experiences of cat can be summarised thus:

10 Sleeping
20 Licking self
30 Whining for food
40 GOTO 10

That said, I find lolcats very amusing. I guess it's sort of like pornography with a knowing understanding that it isn't representational of reality.

I like friendly cats. They seem rare, but I've met cats that will actually show affection for their owners and play with them and such instead of hiding behind the couch or god-knows-where until it's time to eat then running off again. Cats are great pets when they actually act like pets. If I wanted an animal that doesn't do anything besides exist and take up my space and time and look cute, I'd get fish.

On the average, though, I have to say I prefer dogs to cats. Much less chance of getting an ornery bitch if you pick up a dog.

I find cats more to my liking. I used to be more of a dog person but anymore I just find them too needy and annoying.
>> Anonymous
As someone who hates clingyness in both people and pets, I prefer cats. I'd disliked every dog I've ever had the displeasure of living with. However, I also got very lucky when I picked out my cat. If I feel like cuddling something, he's game. And he'll seek out my attention from time to time as well. I also don't have to worry about taking him for walks or housetraining him, which I always found to be a pain.
>> Anonymous
It just depends on what cats you have around you, really. I adore cats, moreso than dogs. I don't like being held high, like dogs make you feel. I don't want it to be something for me to bark around.
All cats I've known are pretty awesome. All the cats in my neighborhood follow me home, all the cats I've had like to play fetch and be affectionate. My kitty, he likes to play games and act loveable. My cat's awesome.
I prefer a pet who thinks of me as an equal, I guess. Not an overlord or master.
>> Anonymous
>>94248

somehow you r name makes me think you eat dogs.

and it would be cool if i found any cats like that, but so far it's just been dogs that act affectionate.

my dog is a bit noisy at time, but it's never a big deal, we just tell him to be quiet and he does. cats in my experience seem to only want you at their convenience, and that's really messed up to me.

also alot of their instinctive habits get on my nerves, like that kneading thing. i HATE that.
>> Anonymous
Your dislike of them stems from ignorance of the species.

Cats are solitary in nature. In the presence of someone else's territory, watching it makes it feel unwanted and on edge. Ignoring it is "I don't care, it's cool" response. Hence them liking you.

Cats need to scratch to keep their nails in check. Give them a scratching post near the couch. Put tape on the couch areas it scratches. Problem solved.

Ultimately it is an independent pet. If you have some sort of need to be worshipped and relied upon that a dog entails, stick with dogs.
>> Anonymous
>>94276

you can't honestly think that dogs worship their owners, i REALLY hope you don't think that because it shows a rather large base of misinformation, if not ignorance.

and what you said is exactly the point. why would you want to keep something that doesn't feel comfortable around you? that makes no sense.
again, if they're solitary, why do they need YOU? let them stay out in the wild, it seems the more logical path.

and I bought a scratching post for the first cat i had. the cat preferred EVERYTHING else but the damn post.

it's like cats seem to be putting up a front, like they need you, but they in general don't admit it. i think that is nonsensical.

this is why this anon prefers dogs, though I have a couple kittens.

like the OP, i dislike cats, but i like kittens, they're adorable.
>> Anonymous
OP here, I'm going to head out for a bit.

i understand both points of view, oddly enough, but i still greatly dislike cats. well, it's not so much disliking cats as i just think dogs make MUCH better pets, and their habits are quite bothersome and annoying.

I'll come back to this soon until then. ^^.
>> Anonymous
>>94288
Worship is too strong a word, I apologize for that. However, you're missing the point. Cats have only been recently domesticated in comparison to dogs by a huge gap. Thousands of years, perhaps tens of thousands considering how or when the first man and wolf decided to work together.

The dynamic between a dog and a cat is usually quite different given their respective histories and tendencies. A dog likes you for feeding it and (if you're doing it right) being it's alpha male in what it instinctively feels is its pack. good so far? A cat doesn't give a fuck if you feed it. You need to earn its trust. It's not that you can't earn it, but you have to work a little harder.

As for scratching posts, you need to give it an incentive. A cat scratches not only to keep its nails down, but to mark territory. It leaves its scent where it scratches, and will continue to do so thereby strengthening the scent sealing a cycle. Could've put tape over whatever it scratched. Sprayed lemon citrus stuff over it to get rid of the scent too. Sometimes you need to be aggressive and hide a watergun and spray it when it's not looking so it associates scratching anything but the post equals icky water. Rewarding the pet with the post via catnip rubbing on it or food near it when it uses it seals it too.

Just because its a cat doesn't mean it cannot be trained. However, the are much more difficult to train than dogs. Cats do their own thing naturally, but you can guide them to a strong degree. Saying "come here" is stupid, but hiding a piece of paper and crumpling it behind you will cause it to investigate achieving same effect.

Meh, I'm rambling cuz I'm procrastinating. Cats of course "need" you, but they're not going to be so demonstrative of it. Some are. My cat follows me from room to room. Meows constantly till I acknowledge it. If I ignore her, she taps me on my side and runs away. She's quite comfortable with me, acts like a dog in some ways.

Fixed.

With my experience with dogs, it's quite the opposite. When we took it out for a walk, the little fucker would ALWAYS come and pee or poo on our garden. It was very annoying at night, barking at nothingness. We despised it so much we gave it out.

But, yeah, I must admit that the worshipfulness's sometimes people give to cats it's very sickening. Being a cat lover myself, I hate those people. Cats are cats, they're not another human being you can screw around with. That's what people are for :)

I'm both allergic and love my kitties, and they... well, they don't exactly love me, but then they've only been here a couple weeks. :3c

But seriously, I prefer the low-maintenence of cats. I don't deal very well with dogs; they need too much of me. If I don't want to deal with a cat, I just close the door and the cat leaves me alone. But I have to walk a dog and interact with it and stuff, and that's just too much effort. ;( -is being only somewhat facetious-

>>94390
The stupidness of a dog that doesn't remember that if it poos in the garden it's gonna get scolded makes me love my kitty who instinctively knows where to poo more. Only had to teach her where and end of story.
Also, kitties are far more silent than dogs. The only thing you have to deal with is, if they're outdoor, the mating season. And you can even get rid of that by a simple operation.

It's okay. Alot of people don't understand cats. I like them because you have to earn their love, they're a little more complex than some other animals. You can't shake a fucking toy at it and expect it to love you forever instantly, they take some time. Also, like dogs, some breeds are a bit more fussy than others.

Most importantly, cats are like any animals in the way that if their owner is fucktard the cat will be a fucktard. My cat is loving, well behaved, and healthy because I'm awesome. :D

DOGS ARE FOR EATING, FAGGOTS
>> Anonymous
It's all a matter of preference and personality.

If you like a low-maintenance animal that you can just cuddle a cat is for you. Cats normally don't really care about anyone but themselves since they're, for the most part, solitary creatures. Much like humans deep down, cats will look after himself before anyone else. Personally I like cats because you know from the get-go that they don't give a fuck.

Dogs are for people who want more of a companion and friend. Dogs like treats, walks, playing with you, comforting you, and they require more care and more room than cats.

And BOTH species have their ups and downs. You could get a cat that will want to spend all it's time in your lap, want to sleep with you, will play with you, everything... Then you might get a dog who will snap at you, hate you, shit on your carpets, and growl at you.

The question isn't "which species do you prefer" it's "which personality you prefer". Each of them have their ups and downs just like people.

I have two dogs and a cat. I've had my cat for 15 years. Her personality has changed many times over the years. She used to be very independent and not like to be held or petted too much, but now that she's older whenever she sees me sitting in the grass outside reading, she always comes prancing across the yard to jump in my lap and sit on my book. She's always very curious to see what I'm doing, and sleeps next to my pillow at night.

If I call her (by holding my hand near the floor her hearing isn't too good anymore), she comes right away. I don't fuss over her.. I'm not an insane cat-lover.. but we just enjoy eachother's company quietly.

My dogs can go either way. They can be the biggest pain in the ass.. but also extremely rewarding. It might be because I never really trained them properly, nor took the interest in doing so.. but they'll always start barking at whoever's at the door and won't back away until they've gotten at that person. They poop in my kitchen, even after letting them out several times! Luckily they don't chew on anything... but they do go through my waste basket in the bathroom and tear the tissues all over the living room. Dogs for the most part are higher-maitenance. I think that's why some people prefer cats.

But my dogs are so cute when they roll onto their backs, presenting their stomachs to be scratched. Or how they'll race eachother to fetch the stuffed duck toy I throw into the yard. They're always so happy to see me come home and compete for my attention. Also they're really fun to take to the park and socialize with the other dogs.

I don't think this has been very helpful.. but I felt like sharing.

Throughout my life I've always be in contact with a Cat; the cause of which is my sister (she's a cat lover.) I however never had a preferance between dogs and cats... Mostly because my family always had cats and never dogs (until later on in my life.)

I've seen nearly every type of cat personality you could get. The crapper, the scratcher, the snob, the scaredy-cat (no pun intended) and so on.

Until my step father came into my life did I ever get a chance to actually have a dog. Anyway... fastforward some years and now my family has two dogs and my sisters cat... whom she left with us because she can't take the cat(moomoocow is his name) with her, yet.

Anyway moomoo is completely and utterly affectionate. All he ever wants is your attention and quite oddly MINE in perticular. Ever since she brought him home he has always followed me around the house and if I ignore him he pokes at my feet with his paws... or he'll hear me come out of my room and run towards me and sprawl out infront of me: its safe to say hes caused me to trip a bunch of times haha.

He gets along with the dogs and honestly the only downer I can say about him is he sheds profusely... and he has white fur so its doubly-annoying. So usually I prefer to not have him on my lap because I come out looking as though I just put on a fur coat.

But having the equal insite on both dog and cat I have to say I prefer cats. Low maitnence, more often than not they use their designated shitting area, the litterbox, and if they're anything like moomoo then Im good.

But I do love dogs as well. I just find myself becoming more irritated with my two dogs than the cat. We own a Yorkshire Terrier and a Golden Retriever/chow mix. Both equally sweet dogs but are much more prone to annoying me.

I'm also not really a cat lover, but that's more because they don't seem to like ME much. My best friend's first cat used to jump from round corners and try to attack me, but he did that with his owners too... He was quite amusing but he didn't really like me.

Her new cat acts as if I'm a monster most of the time, and once a month it lets itself be petted by me. And ONCE in its short life it sat down and fell asleep on my lap. WTF?

That's why I don't always like cats. They're too whimsical and I want something that doesn't always give me haughty looks before completely turning around one day, then going back to haughty the next.

I HAVE known cats that always like to be petted though, so I guess it really depends on the cat.

But I have a special sort of disliking reserved for the MILLION CAT TOPICS on /an/. Throw me some different animals please!
