Apart from the fact that they need about 6 hours attention a day minimum? If you cannot devote that much time per day for a decent sized Parrot, then please don't buy one.

Large birds, like macaws and amazon grey's, can live a long-ass time. Their average life span/s is 60-80 years. Can you deal with that? If you get frustrated two years in, you can't just "let the bird free", whether you live in a city or the country! These intelligent birds require huge, huge enclosures to live in. They aren't going to just live in a gerbil cage or a glass aquarium! They are expensive, too. My friend spends about $1,000 a year on her Scarlet Macaw for vet checks/medicine alone and he's only 16 years old! They need enrichment like toys and things to keep their brains goin'.

So yeahhh... parrots do not make great pets, especially for amateurs. They are VERY loud, live a long time, require lots of care and lots of moneyyyy, and they usually are not friendly, unless you adopt a pre-trained one.

just make sure you're ready for a VERY long and VERY serious commitment. having a parrot is pretty much equal to have a two/three year old child... for about 15-100 years (depending on the species)

african greys are the best talkers, and also some of the most impressionable and sensitive of birds.

if you want one "just to make you laugh," don't bother. be sure you're able to care for it, and research the differences between species to pick the right bird for you! good luck.

I'm not sure if you are familiar with the training it takes to get a bird to talk.

Words are difficult for them to form, so it takes a lot of time repeating, correcting, and training them to speak. It can take months.

Also, many birds will only learn songs or words they find interesting. If it is too boring of a phrase, they will not want to learn or repeat it to you, and instead will find something else they find interesting. Like the telephone ringing, or just a good ol' squawk.

If you want an amusing animal, buy a small rodent.

Birds require a lot of care and research. Make sure you're prepared for one.

if you want a bird that talks "just to make you laugh", buy one of those battery powered things from a toy store. getting a parrot is pretty much like getting a baby, but you can't just let them fend for theirselves when they turn 18.

Cockatiels can talk and are often hilarious, and if you get two of them they don't totally need huge amounts of attention all the time. They're perfectly happy to socialize with you when you're home, and with each other when you're not. I recommend.

Their talking ability is not super awesome but you can definitely understand what they're saying. They can also dance. These are my cockatiels. For talking ability, see Youtube.
