sup /an/ im looking to get a dog soon, im leaning towards getting a german shepherd. Any german shepherd owners out there, how easy is it looking after them grooming, cleaning up after etc and how are they as pets?

Also what other dogs does anon like and what makes them good.
>> Anonymous
They are excellent dogs if raised in the house with the family. Very trainable and easy to housebreak, if done by the book. Grooming is annoying because when they shed their coat for summer, they do it in tufts for months at a time.

Make sure you do training, and always watch your animal around children.

As you can see, they rank pretty high on the "Hey I'm gonna bite you" meter.

German Shepherds (or GSDs) are one of my favorite breeds. I've owned them for more than 30 years. And unfortunately, there are a lot of problems with the breed and the way it's been bred over the years. The vast majority of GSD breeders are breeding dogs that shouldn't be bred, and are propegating poor genes. If you're looking to get a GSD from a shelter or rescue, understand that almost all of the Shepherds desperately in need of loving homes through these agencies are going to have joint issues from arthritis to dysplasia. Gastric torsion is a concern, as are heart and eye issues.

Looking for a pup from a breeder? Do your research. Find a breeder of Champion dogs, preferably with both conformation and working titles. Make sure that they are doing all the necessary testing on their breeding stock (OFA/Penn Hip, PRA, CERF, etc). Go to the national breed club web site, and read their code of ethics and breeder statement. Research the signs that differentiate a poor breeder (BYB) from a reputable breeder.

And, above all else, good luck.

also, since I coverd a bit of health issues above, I must mention behavior, temperament, and training. German Shepherd Dogs were created for herding work, and refined for law enforcement work. This means that they are a working breed through and through, and NEED both physical and mental exercise. Long walk/runs and obedience training can help mitigate behavior issues caused by an energetic, intelligent, but bored dog.

Research the breeders you're looking at buying from. Research the absolute FUCK out of them, until you know where they went to school and when they lost their virginity.

Speaking as someone who has kept Shepherds all their life, I can tell you that they are sound dogs, highly intelligent and very loyal and loving. Things go downhill if the breeder isn't a good one. Problems with the breed include hip displasure and fear biting. In Australia at least, much effort has been put in to getting rid of these faults, but all the same there are good breeders and there are bad ones.

Shepherds come in three body shape flavours: You have the traditional malanine, which is the large, powerful type you usually see on the other end of a copper's leash, you have the straight back, and you have the sloped back. The sloped back is extremely popular at the moment, which is brainless because all that effort has been put into getting rid of hip and back problems and they've turned around and breed them right back in. Stay away from the sloped back dogs, the ones with the cringe. There are individuals being put on show that are this side of being cripped. STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM THEM (Pic related). Go with the malanine, or else the straight-backed animals. They are much more likely to be physically sound.

Temperment-wise, they're usually great family dogs provided the children aren't too young and they're introduced to them while they're still young. Keep in mind, however, that as with all strong-willed, intelligent dogs you've got a challenge ahead of you keeping them trained and well-adjusted. You MUST walk them every day or your yard will look like a bombsite, everything you own will be destroyed and your neighbours will put a murder contract out for the dog AND you. Said walk must be a good one; a half hour is a good start. Much longer if you've got a younger dog, shorter if you've an older or lazier beast. Prepare to have your arm yanked out of its socket; a combination of training and a nose halter is your best option there. Basic obedience training and socialisation are non-optional.

They shed.

Quite a lot. Not quite as much as an ex-flatmate of mine (eeeeeeeew) but you're going to have to groom them at least once a week in winter and three or four times a week in summer. Another problem is that they're prone to something called locally as 'Queensland Itch" but is really just a general skin irritation that can range from a mild dandruff to a full blown scabbing rash, usually in warmer weather. I have also come across a number of individuals that were so sensitive to flea bites that they'd tear holes in their skin and develop massive hotspots at a single nip, but mercifully, this doesn't apply to the breed as a whole. Still, keep on top of the flea problem. It will save drama later.

All in all, they're the best dog breed in the world. They have their faults but eighty percent of them can be avoided by going to a reputable breeder with sound bloodlines. The thing to remember is that this is a an intelligent dog, and they get bored easily. They're also excellent guard dogs which may not be quite what you're after. They're beautiful to look at, and amazingly loving and loyal. Just keep in mind that this is a breed designed for working, so you must work them.

Pic related; the current family dog is a blackie, and she's stunning.

Oh, and I forgot to add-

-escape proof your yard. The males tend to get the wanderlust, no matter how much time you spend with them. Wandering is something they like to do so be on the lookout for that. Females tend not to be as bad.

not sure what you've got for pet foods in Oz, but the number one cause for excessive shedding, itchiness, and hot spots is allergies, and food allergies are increasingly common. All corn, wheat, soy, gluten, and byproducts should be avoided.

This is true, and in one particular case we were so disatisfied with the dog food on offer we took to making our own. However, the grass and tree pollen seem to have a lot to do with it because the Itch affects dogs of all breeds and diets. Also sandflies seem to be a problem; they burrow down through the fur and the bites itch, making the dog bite itself.

in that case, I would recommend naturopathic immune support in the form of vitamins A, C, and E, Omegas 3 and 6, zinc, and shitake mushrooms, among others. These ingredients can be dosed out according to weight and mixed with a high-quality canned food. Immune support and antiinflammatory properties of these supplements can help mitigate reactions to environmental allergans and irritants.

a lot of good advice here.
they are very loyal, friendly, playful , intelligent, eager to please, sensitive to your moods.
very rewarding to own if you have the time to give them.

i have always had gsd's and currently own 2.
buy dogs breed for temperment and health rather than looks or low cost.
both my dogs can be easily traced back 5 or 6 generations on both their parents sides.
take your time, if you are lucky you dog will be with you 10 or more years its worth getting the right one.
good luck.

Best dog ever!!! However, they will shed ALOT my Roomba hates my dog. Don't get one with the fucked up anglelation on the back they should be straight across the back nice and square like a table not like an ironing board with the back legs as high as the front.
As a pup should not be shy or timid try to find an outgoing positive mental attitude pup.
They will bite an attack strangers you have to train a shepherd or it will be a monster fortunately they are the easiest dogs in the world to train if you get them as pups. Leave your Male intacked do not cut his nuts off that is important, don't let some noob tell you otherwise, that is the new gay peta thing that just happened to dogs in the last like 15 years that everyone now believes is the best way to train a male, that is false they need testosterone for drive, they need drive to be trained properly, any real dog men will tell you not to castrate your male, females have less of a problem but you would also be better off with cutting pieces out of her. A female will never leave your side for a second but a male if not properly trained will do what he pleases and make executive decisions about what to do about stuff. Good food is a must don't get any gay food spend 70 bucks on a big bag of kibble your dog will be happy and healthy supplement with raw chicken you can leave the bones if uncooked, never cooked bones, eggs etc.
The only other dogs I would consider are also Shepherd dogs Belgian Malinois, Cech Shepherd, Blue Heeler.

actually, they can be horribly angulated and still have sound structure. The number one GSD in the states, and this year's Westminster top German Shepherd, Geneva, is nearly working titled as well as conformation titled, and she has that painful looking angulation.

also, there is no reason to keep a German Shepherd Dog, male or female, intact pst puberty. It has nothing to do with drive, but with the negative physiological effects of the reproductive hormones, i.e. increased cancer risk in intact animals.

>>298598

We've kept our males intact; in my family's experience the males who get cut often (but not always) loose their protective instincts. We had a male who was castrated late in life due to cancer (about nine or ten) and the personality change was dramatic and fast. He went to being a dominant, powerful, protective dog to being beaten up by toy dogs and showing the robbers where the money was. Aside from that we've kept all our males intact because they have stronger guarding instincts.

By contrast the only female we have got the snip. We had contemplated taking her back to the breeder we got her from and having them select a male with good bloodlines for her, but it was obvious that she had a problem. Everytime a male went near her when she was on heat she tried to kill them. If we'd wanted to have her bred she would have to either be sedated or tied down. Either option was unattractive. The procedure, in contrast to the male option, did not affect her personality and she was a lot more comfortable afterwards and we didn't have to shut her up in the shed when she was on heat.

proven time and time again that testosterone does not affect drive past adolescence. I was a military dog handler, and three of our four male law enforcement dogs were neutered. I formerly worked at a shelter, and several dogs were pulled from that shelter, neutered, and turned into law enforcement dogs. Your personal beliefs are unfounded, and based on very limited experience that doesn't really hold true.

You could not possibly get a more disciplined, loyal and enthusiastic dog. GSDs take well to training even after they've grown old, and a GSD was the only dog I've personally experienced showing genuine delight at performing what they've learnt. Or maybe that's just my boyfriend's GSD. He's a real character.

My boyfriend's GSD only recently learnt how to shake hands at the age of 8, and whenever he sees poor unwitting guests, he comes up to them, tongue out and full grinning, "YOU GONNA ASK ME TO SHAKE HANDS? YEAH? YEAH? YEAH? YEAH! SHAKE HANDS! HERE! SHAKE OTHER HAND! HERE! SHAKE BOTH HANDS!"

... sometimes he gets so excited, he ends up flailing at the air because he can't decide which paw to shake hands with.

Echoing the others though on shedding: he sheds a lot. The entire front and back yard is LINED with his shedding.

>>298605
shedding can be curbed, somewhat, with proper nutrition (low or no grains, low carbs, high protein, high oily nutrients) and routine grooming. I highly recommend the Furminator grooming tool.

Unfounded? Delightful to know. Interesting how one can raise, train and keep GSDs (we've aquired pups, adolescents and older dogs at different times) for three decades, associate with other breeders and other keepers and not know anything about them. In my experience and the experience of others I've spoken to, castrating the dogs- we've only had the one bitch- generally calms them down considerably. Not always but generally. But I'm glad to have you point out that I don't know anything.
>> Anonymous
>>298612
my post to you came off bitchier than it should have, and I apologize for that.

However, MY experience and education contradict yours, as do multiple studies published over the past decade or two. In fact, temperament shift is more commonly seen in females than in males, with aggression being MORE prevalent after spaying than before in many cases... again, studies contradicting your experience.

German shepherds have a tendency to flip their stomachs so be prepared to rush them to the vet the first time it happens (afterwards they'll nail it in place or whatever they do). When they get really old, their back legs will get out and they'll be in arthritic hell. Other than that they're pretty awesome.

AKC is for retards an you are incorrect. Even if it was "structurally sound" there dog engineer they do not function well and as Von Stephanitz intended, no Dog man in there right mind would get a GSD with that anglelation.
Pic is as breed was intended. AKC tards breed for looks and other stupid reasons having nothing to do with working. Think back in the day when they actually used them for working and herding the standard was wrong but somehow the AKC figured something out about them that the original breeders did not?

To be fair to you and trust me I don't want to be out of rage. lulz

You might an I stress MIGHT be able to get a castrated male to work but it won't be well or good never be as good as an intacked male might be able to get him to bite maybe in prey drive maybe.
The only reason to cut a dogs balls off is cancer, don't do it just because you suck at training hard dogs.
Just ask yourself would you cut your own balls off for no reason? If not why do you go have your sperm frozen and go get castrated? Would it effect you do you think, the way you act and perform? Of course it would. It does the same to your dog when you do it to him.
