Soup /an/, last night my boyfriend's mother bought topical flea stuff (apparently cheap stuff from Wal-mart, no name) and used it on his cats. The older cat seems completely unaffected, but the younger one is acting very funny. He's usually very bouncy and playful and jumping all over furniture and the like, but today he was very, very lethargic. He sat in the same spot in his room all day, something he never does. He didn't eat much, not even when offered a treat. We put catnip on his favorite toy and he disdained it. And when he finally gets up and walks around, he compulsively shakes his left hind leg, like it has water on it. The vets are closed. I've never had a pet react in such a way to flea medicine. Any idea what could be wrong?

If it's that cheap-ass "natural" shit that was in a green bottle and smells disgustingly strong, you might want to give the cat a bath. It's not good for cats.

I honestly don't know, my boyfriend wasn't home when she did it and we haven't been able to get ahold of her since.

Cry harder about irrelevant things.

neurological toxicity from the crop pesticides that are used in the cheap OTC flea meds. Best advice is calling your nearest ER vet NOW.

What an idiot. Wash the shit off and take him to the vet ASAP. The poor thing is probably poisoned.

I'm going to say something very carefully.

DO NOT USE CHEAP CHEMICALS ON YOUR PETS

Repeat that in your head until you understand it, 4chan.

WE didn't. His mother took it upon herself to do it even though we didn't ask her too. At any rate we gave him a bath and he's completely back to normal, and we took him to thevet as well and got a clean bill of health. I don't know if it was the flea meds that were bugging him or if he was just choosing to act funky that day.

The cat was probably all jumpy originally because of the fleas.

THE CHEAP SHIT YOU BUY FROM ANYONE THAT'S NOT A VET IS POISON. completely ineffective poison. I'm telling you this because I used to work at a vet clinic for cats. Seriously, the stuff you buy for cheap only lasts about 2 weeks AT MOST and the only reason they tell you to spread out the application is because they dont want you poisoning your animals. Seriously, get the stuff recommended by vets, it might cost a little bit more, but first of all its worth it (because you're going to get a non-toxic flee protection (and other pest protection depending on which brand you get))and second, you already have to be ready to spend money for your animal's well being when you're a pet owner.
I hope this helps, please don't ever ever EVER use the cheap, non-vet stuff, its horrible for your animals and doesn't even work.

Nah, he didn't have fleas until he escaped outside a few weeks ago, and he's always been a very playful, excitable cat (he can even play fetch and will do it for hours on end).

While we were at the vet we got him some Advantage instead and he received much better. We're changing the locks on our apartment so no more mishaps will occur, lol.
