Purchasing an Iguana Anonymous
Any iguana owners here?

How much would it be, in total (US Dollars or CDN Dollars) to purchase an iguana and all necessary accessories (tank etc.).

Also - how much would it be for food and general upkeep, per month?

Thanks Anon.

it doesn't sound like you're experienced.
iguanas are NOT easy lizards to take care of and its expensive.
someone dumped one on me once and putting aside that it was aggressive as fuck, i was spending a shit ton money on just different types of fruit and veggies for it every other week or so. finding the proper enclosure for it was a bitch because a good one was running over three hundred bucks.
tanks are not recommended. look how HUGE that one in the picture is. do you really think that thing lives in a tank? their cages have to be huge and a lot of iguanas actually have a full room just for their iguana. I started to build one but someone offered to take him from me so it was never finished.

please. if you REALLY want one, you need to do A LOT of research. having a lizard that can get up to six feet, that can take chunk out of your arms with their teeth, maul you with their claws and leave massive welts on your arm from getting whipped with the tail SUCKS.

has some good information on them.

I'm not an Iguana owner, I prefer dogs (I own five corgis) but I would like to see that the reptile in the picture is most impressive.

Just ask the pet shop what you need, and have fun taking care of it until it dies. It won't get awesome huge since you won't care for it properly, but you'll still get to have an iguana for a while and when it dies you can just get a new one. They're pretty cheap if you get em small

Don't buy an iguana. Just... don't. The only way I'd possibly recommend keeping an iguana to anyone is if you live somewhere warm year-round and have a greenhouse available that can be secured to keep it from escaping. They don't make good pets and for the long-term money you'd be better-off buying a saltwater aquarium.

If nobody can convince you otherwise, then go to your local pet shelter instead of a pet store. Tons of iguanas there that have been given up by people who can no longer afford the time, money and space to keep them.

Yes, Iguanas take alot of time and effort. Believe me, I used to own 5 full-grown iguanas AT ONCE. 2 males and 3 females.
They need lots of room, So I suggest you build a big and tall custom enclosure with plastic chicken wire screens so they can climb. They like to be high up so LOTS of giant logs will do.
It's good to experiment with their diet. Each one always likes something different. Be sure to sprinkle a calcium supplement over their food, as they have bone issues and can become weak and crippled if they don't have enough calcium.
My iguanas preferred yellow squash and zucchini with, believe it or not, canned pumpkin. You mix the calcium with it and roll it into a ball and they'd go crazy over it!
Also, if you have dogs, put your dogs food up if you let your iguana roam about house. They will eat it like candy.
As a side note, they like to shit in their waterbowl to keep their cage clean, so I suggest you have two. One for shitting, and the other for drinking.
OP's picture was about the size of one of my males, he was 13, Mortimus, or Morty. He was the sweetest thing in the world and would sleep in my bed. Iguanas can be very enjoyable pets when properly taken care of. And quite the eye-catcher! :3

That's right, the best Iguanas for Iguanas are in fact - Iguanas. You can ask every Iguana in Iguana, they agree to this Iguana.

Here's my brother's iguana. His name is Louie, and he'll be 9 in September. We got him when he was a tiny juvenile and could fit in the palm of a hand!

They are in fact tricky to take care of, and Louie had an abcess in his mouth that made him very sick. Luckily we had a local vet who dealt exclusively with exotic pets to help out.

He's now very healthy, and eats better salads than I do.

Just remember to handle it often, it will help with it being more affectionate.
