Dear /an/,

I have been a dog admirer all my life. Never owned one or really took care of one, but I feel now is the time.
So I narrowed down to the kind of dog I wanted and eventually setteled upon a Welsh Corgi. I find them bundles of fun and they seem very smart and warm, plus I find them generally cute. So my mind was made up. Welsh Corgi.

But then Christmas morning came. My dad bought me a book of useless facts as a stocking gift. In the book I came across a peculiar dog called a Basenji.
The Basenji is a peculiar dog because it apparently dosen't bark. It yodels.

Now, outside of the awesomeness of a dog that yodels, it is too very smart and cute.

So now I am a torn man. Do I get a Welsh Corgi or a Basenji? Money won't play a huge factor in my situation since I am willing to spend a substantial amount, but Basenji's seem like one of those dogs that are rare as hell.

So, /an/, can any of you persuade me towards one of these dogs? Has anyone had a Basenji that can tell me how awesome it is to have a yodeling dog?

corgis are probably better in general if you have a smaller house/apartment/condo/whatever.
I've never owned either, but I'm just assuming the smaller the dog, the more appropriate for a smaller house.

in before mutt vs. purebred debate (pff, get what you want, just don't get it from a puppy farm or a pet shop.)

i really don't know the difference between the two, but i'd look at their activity level (lazy vs. i need to be run at breakneck speed every hour on the hour) and how well they do in the type of home you live in. Don't get a breed that won't match your lifestyle.

also: you want to live with this?

Eh, but Corgis have all the energy of a big dog, despite their size. So it's not like one of those little yappy lap dogs that doesn't need a lot of room to run around and play.

Er, no. Not unless you have an absolutely massive backyard. They're herding dogs and need to run -constantly-

What else do you know about corgis? They're a major commitment, not just some cute stubby ball of fluff.. Difficult to train properly.
They also tend to have joint problems.

Basenjis are nifty, but a friend of mine had one, and he was largely a one person dog. (I don't now whether that's a breed trait or not.) Hers also hated fire and would get very upset if someone lit a cigarette.

Get a basenji! Yodeling sounds a lot more pleasant than a bored dog that barks. Plus they're not as freakishly genetically mutated.

Eerr, you are aware that some corgis like to sing, too, right?

Lots of dogs will do that if you make a noise like that. Even regular barky dogs.

I have heard that Corgis are talkers, too. I met one, once, who started making these funny noises when I knelt down to pet him. It was pretty cute.

Definitely do research. Talk to/meet some breeders if you want to go that route. Maybe they can introduce you to some of the dogs in person and you can get a good feel for what you'd rather have.

one thing that turned me off about basenjis are that i heard they can be a bit aggressive, and are not very good with kids. Of course i believe any dog if raised correctly can be amazing amicable, but i am an avid corgi owner and lover and would reccomend them to anyone!

Actually the basenji dosnt really yodle, infact when you listen to it, it sounds rather painful, like a poor dog that had its vocal cords cut. Maybe if you live in an appartment that needs quite it is a good choice, because corgis can be quite noisy, they do sing too, its not just yapping, but the burrr and merowl... i have one that snorts like a piglet, corgis are adoreable.

I had a corgieXfoxy same thing but unlike the youtube clips you didn't have to play anything to get her to talk, just talking normaly or even just looking at her would make her talk to you. Snuffles, yodels and pidgen noises. It was great, best personality with everyone but she had a big bark on her to boot.

you usually have to keep a basenji leased, because they are very inderpendent dogs(may not return to you really soon) and like to hunt(my be hit by a car or shot by a hunter).

BASENJIs are the BEST.
they are amazing.
but they have alot of health problems and not a long lifespan.

Basenjis are truly awesome dogs, playful, but not neurotic and just plain adorable!

My neighbor has one and we used to take our dogs for walks together ( I have an akita )

The basenji looked like a mini version of the my dog ^_^ (minus the excessive fluff)
