Snakes Anonymous
My boyfriend wants a snake
And I don't want a pet that does nothing but sits, eats, and slithers around...I want cats(I'm supposed to take in my families cats, there are 3 of them) but he wants a Ball or Burmese Python...I was told that "eventually the snake will get so big it will have to be fed cats and chickens"...I'm not liking that...I also don't want my cats to be eaten.

I want a pet that will love me and be affectionate, and want attention.

do snakes even have a personality?
>> Anonymous
Yes.

Ball pythons however have ugly heads.

"a burmese or a ball"

hahaha. somehow I doubt he knows much about snakes if he's unsure of whether to go with a snall beginner's snake or a fucking illegalinmanyareas huge one.

I don't think Ball Pythons get big enough to have to eat cats and chickens. Female ones get about a max of 5 feet long, males are smaller than that. I had one, and it only ever got big enough to eat a small sized rat.

I heard that boas are better pets than pythons. :)
>> Anonymous
Don't get a burmese. They do get huge and can probably eat you.

The snake in OP's pic I believe is a rainbow boa. Very pretty snake.
Ball pythons have a good personality and they don't get that big. I also heard the red tail boas have the same temperament as ball pythons.

OP here
No he's not a begginer when it comes to snakes(I am though).

but what do snakes ...do?
>> Anonymous
burmese pythons are seriously the worst pets ever holy shit

anywho. snakes do a whole lot of loafing in their boxes and eating once a week. they may have personality, but they will not become affectionate. they do not love you.

My ball python had a habit of licking me in the face, dunno what that was about. She never attempted to bite me though, she was content to just hang out in my lap or around my hand and chill. It was pretty funny to take her out with me when I went walking and see how many people screamed and ran away crying when they saw her, lol.

>>134617
All they do is be awesome.
They sit around, bask, strangle the fuck out of the prey you give them(alive or prekilled. i suggest giving them prekilled for safety precautions) and chill around your neck.

Thats basically it.
Don't be the whiny whore you are and let your boyfriend get his snake and you take whatever faggy cat you want.

i've never seen an adult corn snake anyway.

Speaking of corn snakes, you should tell your boyfriend to look into them. They're generally less expensive than other snakes, and all the color morphs are beautiful. I'm a fan of candycane morph corn snakes myself :P creamsicle is a nice one too.

so you want pets that do nothing but sits, eats, sleeps and sometimes tries to claw your ankles?

I am not OP, but I am wondering where is the best place to buy snakes like this? I haven't found a breeder in my state but I know some will do overnight shipping of animals.

Snakes can be interesting. Burmese Pythons get the huge. We're talking 10 to 25 feet. 100 to 400 pounds. But they are just lazy bums. They usually never do anything. Retics and Anacondas are more interesting, but generally more aggressive.

I like my Red Tail Boas though. You might find you will love those snakes. They don't get too big, and are not as squiggly and annoying as corn snakes, are big enough you can let them out of the cages to roam the room/etc your other animals are not in and see what silly antics they get themselves into.

You will find them suprisingly cute. My Boa Constrictor Imperator often ends up going into my shirt (I'm a guy, put those dicks away), ends up in the weirdest places in the room, likes to knock down my figures for either a really good reason or no particular reason (seriously, he goes up to the shelves, knocks everything off, then coils up. If I put something back on, she goes to it and knocks it off. Makes for lots of luls.

They are more interesting when you build big cages for them, not the standard recommended 6x2x2's. My BCI is 9' and 51LB and has no fat on her at all. Her cage is 8 wide 4 deep 7 tall with shelves, branches, etc. When I take her out she's very active which makes things more fun. Most snakes are much lazier from being in tiny cages all the time.
>> Swallow It
Its a case of different ideas on the idea pets. Now a days i wouldn't sweat it. The 2 of you wont last long enough together to worry about such issues. If you do last. He likes snakes he is gonna get one. Its only the question of how long it will be till one of your cats can fit in its belly. Next time look for someone who likes cats.

From my experience with corn snakes, they are very skiddish little fucks that never calm down. Very wriggly. I say they are only good for show.

I have two cats, and two Siberian Huskies. The BCI and Burm could eat the cats. The Huskies want to eat the cats and the snakes. The cats want to eat the snake's frozen rats.

Using common sense you will have all of them not eaten. My snakes are in their own room. My dogs are outside with doggy door into my room. The cats get the rest of the house. There's a lock on the snake room and my bedroom so nobody opens them by accident. Even if the cats got into the snake room, the snakes would have to break out of their cages which is not easy to do. Possible but would take lots of effort.

Just exercise common sense and you'll be ok. If you want to compromise tell the guy to get a Ball Python or a male Boa Constructor Imperator. They won't be able to eat a full grown cat or be able to get out of their cages assuming he's not stupid enough to leave it open, but even if it's open, if where you live often is below 80 they will be too cold to want to eat and would prefer to find warmth (your cats warmth not applicable here, they want security)

if you're a pet lover, the first time you see it eat something struggling for its life you'll regret it forever. i certainly do.

Do yourself a favor. Feed them frozen thawed rats. You can buy them almost anywhere. I believe even Petco and Petsmart sell them now. They come frozen, and humanely killed. (before you argue what's humanely killed, getting the neck discolated, slammed into a wall, etc are more humane than how a snake kills. However they are killed by some kind of gas, they just fall asleep then die without suffocation or panic.)

It is also safer for the snake. It is not natural for captive snakes to eat live rats "like in the wild". Because in the wild, they have much higher immune systems and have survived the darwin game to get big enough to eat rats that can bite. Rat bites will chew up your snake, infect it, and bring it to a horrible suffering death.

Please remember, even if you don't connect to snakes or are disgusted by them, they do need to eat too. It's not their fault they are carnivores. Your cats and dogs kill more brutaly and more often than a snake will in it's lifetime. If you think a snake eating a live rat struggling for it's life is horrible, try watching a cat play with a rat until it dies of shock, or mutilates it bit by bit for amusement until it finally dies. At least a snake is kinder than that.

Snakes are not "kind" any more than cats or dogs are "cruel." Animals are amoral. They do what's in their nature, and as you said, we shouldn't blame them for it.

Burmese pythons get motherfucking huge, and will eventually have to be fed either huge amounts of rats or small mammals. Eventually it will need more than one person to handle safely. Ball pythons stay relatively small, and can be fed thawed, pre-killed rats. If he will listen to you, tell him to get the ball python. But he'll probably do what he wants, regardless of what you say.

Snakes CAN be interesting. Ball pythons are kind of cute.

I wasn't trying to imply snakes have a higher sense of morality than dogs and cats. But a snake that kills and eats an average of 13 times a year VS a dog that kills and eats at least 600 times a year should be a no brainer. I was simply trying to draw a parallel that a snake is less of a mass murderer than a cat is, and yet people love cats and hate snakes for eating rats.

As for feeding burmese, I find rabbits are enough (you can find those frozen too, from places like www.rodentpro.com)

But for the larger ones, you may have to feed small pigs. Harder to find, though, and more expensive. But 12 pigs will last you a year.

Ball pythons are good starter snakes.
They're nice, friendly and don't mind being handled.
Just make sure they have a large enough space to live in.

Hognoses are good snakes. I used to have one, and they're nice, calm snakes. The only bad thing is that they're venomous, but only enough to give someone swelling.

do guys realize that their girlfriends usually only put up with snakes to avoid putting up with the bitching and whining that would result if they got a cat instead?

fixx'd

Also... avoid the larger snakes ->>134774mentioned a ball python as a good starter. They get roughly 4 feet, and they live for quite a while in captivity. Snakes in general tend to need a lot more research than cats, and while they don't need as much attention per say, they also aren't as much fun. A lot like fish, actually....

You also need to make sure there's a vet in your area who is able to care for or treat any problems your snake may have.

I love my pets and other animals, but I watched snakes eat live chipmunks and mice when I was nine at summer camp and didn't feel bad or regret it at all. I'm a girl, too, and I personally would love to have a pet snake, but my parents and sibling don't want to have to feed it dead mice or something.

I don't see why the OP can't have cats AND a snake. My cat and lizard (not a snake, but still a reptile) don't even acknowledge each other.

Snakes need to eat mice/rats/etc to survive, and that's not any crueler than what cats do. My pet cat brings half-alive mice upstairs every night and plays with them for a while before swallowing them whole. Playing with them happens to be a very bloody and violent process. Being strangled by a snake seems less painful than that.

I realize that, and while I personally love snakes (had a corn at one point, and took care of several others long-term), the real reason most girls don't like the idea of getting a snake vs. a cat is because they are either terrified of snakes, or get the creepy-crawlies when around them. They much prefer a cat, not only because of the 'less creepy' factor, but because cats tend to be a lot more affectionate. Sad, but true.

>>135027

I'm going out on a limb here, but I think the number of couples that have a cat which is unwanted by one person vastly outnumbers the number of couples that have a snake which is unwanted by one person.

why is it sad that girls prefer pet cats over snakes because they are more affectionate? one of the reasons people get pets is to be able to interact and enjoy spending time with them. people get dogs for the same reason.

I'm another girl whose parents don't want snakes in the house. (I'm also>>135134). I'll get one when I move out, too, or maybe I'll manage to persuade them sooner. Snakes are cool, and while some girls find them creepy, not all do.

perhaps because girls usually get whatever they want and label it 'compromise', and the very moment the guy wants a 'compromise' in his favour, he's considered a villain

A third girl who would also love a snake. I did a lot of research a while ago and was just on the point of buying myself a corn snake, but decided to wait a while. My mom worry always was, I live in rural Kansas where storms knock out our power sometimes, and snakes need to be kept at certain temperatures, so I'd worry that something would happen.

I'll probably get a snake sooner or later, when I'm living alone. I love cats and everything too, I also have a pet dog, but it'll be interesting to have a snake even if they're not as affectionate.
