Quick question, cuz I've never come across this before....

The cat pictured is Winston. I've put up pictures of him before. I bought him some toy mice for Christmas. Red fuzzy ones, 2 with bells, and 2 with strings you can use to dangle them. Anyways, Winston keeps putting them in his water dish and leaving them there. I'm not exactly sure why, does anyone have a clue?

I've seen a number of cats do this, it's pretty normal behaviour. He's either trying to drown them, or trying to make them drink as though they were his young; not sure which one, you'd have to ask him. Just one of those strange habits cats have sometimes, just ignore it.

Indeed, I have a cat that does that with mice and balls. He's probably just playing with his "catch."

My cat actually looks a lot like Winston...

Anyway, the worst that'll happen is you get a few soggy cat toys. No worries!

Thanks guys. I don't think he's treating them as his young since he attacks them quite frequently. I guessed that he's drowning them.

one of my cats drags things into the litter tray, mostly toys, but lately she's been dragging my panties and my boyfriend's socks in there.

should we be insulted?

my parents have an all black cat named winston. he is a LOT bigger than the cat in the OP though. still weird coincidence

I had a cat that did that, though with live mice. She liked to drown them. I just figure she was the reincarnation of a mafioso.

maybe he as postpartum depression and he thinks they're his kids.

If only my cat would drown the mice she catches. She just carries them around to other areas of the house and sets them down, at which point they run off. If I'm lucky the dog will then see and kill them.

If a cat kills a mouse and doesnt eat it, it is usually because they are trying to teach their 'inferior human protegees' how to hunt. in order to do this they will kill or capture the animal and if it is not done in the humans sight they leave it somewhere they know the human will find it and get the message.
In OP's case its the water bowl because they know OP will find it there because OP probably changes the water in it a lot in full view of the cat, in my case my cat usually leaves it by or in my shoes because after I feed the cat I check on the animals that live outside.

The cat isn't really trying to insult you by saying you're a rubbish hunter/rubbish at feeding it, it is just being greedy and saying it wants more food. Given the chance a lot of cats would happily have food shovelled into their gobs every waking hour though, see the fat cats thread.

cats don't like still water, so they like to either play in their dishes or put things in there to keep the water moving. it's their form of stimulant I guess. my cat puts his toys in his water all the time.
