So here's the deal: My girlfriend and I are soon to be moving in together, and the topic of owning an animal was brought up. We discussed it some, and after awhile we came to the "conclusion" that due to the fact that at home she has a chihuahua that her 5 month old son adores, we would like to get another, smaller dog that her son could enjoy and grow up around.

The only problem is, the only dog's I've ever owned are chihuahuas myself too. I'm not sure what the smaller breeds are out there really? I was thinking of a weenie dog, or maybe a pug or something like that, but I'm not sure.

What do you think /a/? What's a good small dog to have around kids? Also one that is preferable easy to train and won't ruin the apartment.

Pic somewhat related, as I wanted to get a cat instead.

Tiny dogs are useless, annoying wastes of resources. Man up. Get a cat.

get a main coon, giant cat> small dog "literally"

Seconding the cat. Get a long-haired one who likes dogs, it can cuddle your chi and keep it warm.

OP here. So, apparently everyone thinks I should go with cats? I mean, sure, that is an option.

But really though, what are some good inside, small dogs?

cats and babies are not good.
Cats can transmit toxoplasmosis to babies.

why does the dog have to be tiny? Big and medium sized dogs are awesome and just as friendly if not moreso

I see no problems with this.

I don't think you have a girlfriend. Enjoy your buttsex.

So you're moving in with this girl. She has a dog. She has a five month old son. How long have you been dating? You said it's "her" son, meaning it is not also yours. Unless you started dating when she was knocked up (in which case, gross), then you have been together less than five months. Seriously, don't consider getting a pet with someone you are not married to.

Why is she letting a fucking ratdog around a helpless baby anyway? That bitch is fucked up.

This whole situation is terrible. Please consider dumping your stupidwhore girlfriend and getting an actual dog.

Yeah, there's no more "danger" in owning a large dog than a small one. My experience with dog sizes is that small ones tend to think they're big (they bark a lot, can be aggressive toward other dogs) and big dogs think they're little (a great dane will have no problem trying to sit in your lap.)

if you're more concerned about activity level or keeping one in a small apartment, then that's different. but even so, you might consider a cat first. You won't have the same problems with housebreaking, either.
