Diabetic Cat - please help Anonymous
My cat is diabetic, i give him "Caninsulin" 2 times a day, one time every 12 hours. Is there anything else i should do? Diet supplement/wise? Her tail "shakes/shivers" frequently and the underside of her belly has gotten bald and has reddish irritated skin and my veterinarian hasn't got a clue what to do. He's a total noob, sadly so i am so i need your help.

This seems to be the most obvious answer

yeah, new vet. You probably will have to buy special food, but i don't think he'll need supplements. Science Diet does food for dogs and cats for things like liver or heart failure, high blood pressure, etc. They probably have one for diabetic cats.

Don't you have to measure the amount of insulin and sugar in the blood to correctly dose the cat? Insulin is some serious shit to be jamming in a body, you could be killing your pet. Also see if you can whip up a low carb diet for her.

Well, I'm a type I diabetic myself. All I can say, is that you need to measure your cat's blood sugar, based on that you inject the insulin. It's good that you give the cat a dose every 12 hours, to cover the base, but animals and humans also need insulin before every meal, to counter the hyperglycemia (high blood sugar). If your cat is eating something with carbohydrates in it, you need an additional dose. Also, the shaking/shivering may be cause of the low blood sugar, I highly suggest you to check it, and lower the basal dose if needed.

Also, I reccomend to get some liquid/injectable glucose in case of hypoglycemia.

Diabetes mellitus type 1 (Type 1 diabetes, Type I diabetes, T1D, T1DM, IDDM, juvenile diabetes) is a form of diabetes mellitus. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that results in the permanent destruction of insulin producing beta cells of the pancreas. Type 1 is lethal unless treatment with exogenous insulin via injections replaces the missing hormone.

NOT ONLY FAT PEOPLE GET DIABETES, YOU FAGGOT.

my cat was diabetic, theres not much you can do, im sorry. giving him insulin is very hard to do for a cat and any real vet would have advised you not too.

I work in a pharmacy and half the syringes I sell are for diabetic cats (or druggies who say they have diabetic cats, but more likely, cats), so I get the impression that it's pretty common..

Feed your cat strictly Diabetes Management (DM for short, and sadly it is pretty expensive) food and don't feed your cat any people food. Also be sure to go to the vet and make sure your cat's blood sugar is under control every few months. A good test to see if it isn't is if your cat is pissing much more frequently. And to be honest any insulin works for cats, you just need to give the proper amount every 2 hours.

Really though, you need to go to a vet who knows what they are doing and can teach you to control your cat's diabetes better. Also there may be a more serious underlying problem.

Lol wut?

I have a diabetic cat. He was losing fur and getting thin until we took him to the vet. He takes two doses of insulin a day (one in the morning and one at night).

He is 19 years old and perfectly peachy-keen healthy.
