Anybody know an animal I can keep as a pet that will most likely live as long as me or outlive me? I've kind of strayed away from dogs and cats because I hate having them only live a few years and then die leaving me heartbroken for a few weeks. I'm not interested in a bird, the last ones I had were too noisy. I kind of want something that can stay in the house instead of outside, something that can sleep on the foot of my bed, or actually in the bed.

For some reason I have a fear of turtles, frogs and any bugs.

Parrots are annoying, and the last one I had always bit me, hard.

Yeah, that's EXACTLY what I want...

They live about as long as cats.

Tortoises are not turtles, they are similar but they are not the same thing.

Birds are your best bet for a long lived pet, but you have to be careful of your choice.

Macaws and Conures are your best bet for a non-biter, but they can be loud. Trouble if you're a renter. Most varieties of Cockatoo are very sweet, particularly the Umbrella and Rose Breasted varieties. Avoid Sulfur Cresteds. They eat fingers.

Amazon parrots and *any* African species are neurotic and squawky. Great talkers but not worth the trouble if you ask me. They will bite your girlfriend and keep you from getting laid.

If I were going to commit to a bird for 40-60 years, it would be a Moluccan Cockatoo. Amazing birds when hand fed. Probably $1500 - $2000 US for the *right* bird.

Oh yeah. Don't let a bird sleep in your bed.

It will only end in tragedy.

Yeah I had an african grey, they are very loud and are almost always saying shit or making noises. It memorized my cell phone ringer in less than 2 days, after he memorized it he would always make that noise at random times and I'd be up searching for my phone. The only awesome thing that came out of it was I taught him to say desu over and over and Pools closed, but that's it.

Don't birds have something that kills dogs? I used to own a parrot and each dog I had died within 2-3 years from some illness, but when I got rid of the parrot and got some new dogs they're still living after age 6.

Are you insinuating your parrot gave your dogs parrot fever or something?
>> Anonymous

What's parrot fever? I have no idea if it was parrot related but it's odd that my dogs kept dying when I had it but now they're living longer.

Been taking care of 3 poodles and a yorkshire terrier for over 6 years.

Your best pet is a large parrot or a tortoise. And considering that tortoises are basically rocks with legs, while parrots are about as smart as apes and can learn to talk, it shouldn't be hard to choose...

Dogs on average are shorter-lived than cats. Dogs usually live about 10-15 years while it's completely normal to cat to live to be 20 or older. There are several confirmed cases of cats living to be over 35.

Sugar Glider.

Do a lot of research first though. But the benefits would be after you've bonded wtih them etc, you can take them everywhere with you in your pocket.

If you want a very calm quite bird who isnt likely to bite and is a good family bird, the pionus is your best bet. they usually live around 30-40 years. i wouldnt go with a macaw because they are a one person bird, they will blond to whoever spends more time with them and hat everyone else.. as my boyfriend has found out with my macaw. cockatoos are good but their loud and need alot of attention or they will pluck their feathers and mutilate themselves... they are the emo of the bird kingdom.

Great apes tend to live for 30-50 years. They also tend to be a bitch to look after though. And illegal.
>> Anonymous
some tarantulas live in upwards of 40 years

not so sure about the sleeping in the bed part, though..

Bad idea, sugar gliders are not good pets, trust me on this one.

Sugar Gliders are wonderful pets. Just depends on the owner and how much research time they want to put into it, just like any other pet. Though, they are by no means low maintence pets like dogs or cats

Tortoises are awesome. Super easy to care for, and despite what people are saying, they do have individual personalities.

OP is looking for an indoors pet, long-lived and cuddly enough to sleep on or in his bed.

OP is either a troll, an extremely coincidentally bad pet owner, or is just plain asking for the impossible.

'Small-and-furry' pets are generally cuddly critters, but they need their own areas, and generally don't live all that long compared to most other pets. Some rabbits can live to ten or more, I believe, but it doesn't sound like a rabbit is what you want.

OP, if you've had multiple cats and dogs die within just a few years, you need to tell me how you take care of them so I can rage and tell you what you're doing so horribly wrong.

Anon dreams well these days.

Just buy a cat or dog and stop being a sissy.
Those few weeks of whining after your pet passed away are nothing compared to the great company you had for such a long time.

Parrots. I have had one for almost 13 years.. yeah they are noisy and sometimes a bit grumpy, but I love her/him (hard to know the sex) anyways is your best choice, also... they don't kill dogs/cats.. I have 2 dogs (chihuahua and big monster boxer + rot..) and they both 7, so.. there is no problem by having parrots and dogs... or cats (mine are scared of the parrot)

Dogs have a normal life-span of 10-15 years. Smaller dogs live longer than larger breeds.
Domestic cats are about the same. However, according to the Guinness Book, the oldest known cat was 37 in 2004.
Rabbits can live up to 10 years and it's possible to litter-box train them. Don't ask me how, but I know someone who has.
I don't know of any pet animals that have a similar life-span to humans.

Mine is about 4 or 5 years old, and won't eat anything that doesn't move. Is this normal? I want him to eat some dried/rehydrated fruit flies, but he barely notices them.

Get an asian slavegirl. Feed her a healthy diet, make sure she gets plenty of exercise, and drinks lots of tea. Also avoid getting her pregnant, as that may signifigantly alter her chances of survival. Tell her what a good slave she is every night and let her know you love her. Then make sure they bury her with you when you kick the bucket.

before you get a cockatoo, or any large bird really

please read http://www.mytoos.com/

Just prepare yourself, Moluccans are very sweet as baby's, all animals are, but when cockatoo's grow up they get hormonal and can become aggressive and violent.

I understand chinchillas live to be twenty or so. It won't outlive you, but it's the closest to what you've specified without getting into super exotics.
>> menchi !IgWlr3a0sk
an African Grey, if you can do with the bird standing on your face in the morning to wake you up, and chewing on your lips when it's bored.

great pets. I <3ed mine.

Do understand OP that if you get an animal that does manage to outlive you it probably won't adapt very well after your death and will be mourning for a while.

Im also going to vote for human

fairly low maintenance, extremely cuddly and long lifespan, if you get the right one

;_;

Lolol no one here has yet mentioned hermit crabs in terms of age. Oldest recorded was somewhere around 80 years. Of course, you can't really snuggle with them but you can hold and play with them and when they grow large they're huge bad-ass motherfuckers. But they aren't for everyone and unless you know EXACTLY what you are doing, they are difficult to keep alive.

How about monitor lizards?

I've met a guy who had one, which was litter trained, and was "attached" to him.
That is, it acknowledged his presence, which is more than most reptiles will...

Monkies. You have to get a license for them, but monkies will live to be about the same age as humans. Spider/chimp and those sorts. I dunno - google or youtube 'em.
