Very good quality, I may add...There's a studio in Portugal that sells entire skeletons, but at $6,000, those are just a BIT beyond my price range.

Also bear in mind that since the Dodo only lived on Mauritius Island and nowhere else, their fossils are among the rarest in the world. The solitaire from Rodrigues is another, but it's not as glamorous as the Dodo. It looked like a giant goose, where as the Dodo looked like...well, um...like a Dodo!

No, we should turn to genetic engineering to produce new species of flightless pigeons, because as we all know, big fat flightless birds rock!

I remember seeing something about the island the Dodo was from has a species of tree dependent on them. The tree produced fruit only the Dodo would eat and that was how it spread it's seeds. Now the other plants are taking over and these trees' fruit are just rotting.

Now I'm hungry for some Battenberg.

Well, they've managed to produce some new saplings, so the tree is not about to die yet. It just doesn't do very well unless the seeds pass through the digestive system of a dodo, so obviously they are looking for a replacement.

Actually, I think the trees are called Macrozamia, or Dodo tree, or something like that...Anyway, biologists have rescued the trees by feeding the fruits to turkeys, which eat em and pretty much do what the dodos had done before, which is spread the seeds and help them to germinate. In the late '90's the first seedlings in over 300 years germinated.
There's also a wildlife preserve off the coast of Mauritius which is totally devoid of rats, feral pigs and such...Biologists have moved the most endangered wildlife to this island, where the populations have rebounded. Dunno what they're going to use to substitute for dodos, though...
