Hey /an/, I just got my first kitten, the first cat I ever got, and I'm hella nervous.

Is there anything I should know about raising a kitten? Anything at all, I wanna treat it with love.

Umm, feed it, give it water, litter train it, vet at least once a year and you're set.

Teach it good habits when interacting with you. I know you think it's cute to have the kitten dig its relatively soft claws in you, or nip your fingers and whatnot, but it's NOT CUTE when the kitten's a full-grown cat.

I think you were supposed to feed it 3 times a day, then cut it to 2 times, then cut it to once a day as the kitten ages. As you know cats are lactose intolerant, give it lactose-free milk or pet milk, depending on which is cheaper.

Leave plenty of fresh water, don't let it drink from the toilet ever, get a scratching post that's much taller than its height so it can stretch itself fully when scratching, change the litterbox often and keep it in a secluded area of the house, if your house is double storey or whatever, keep another accessible one, at least until the cat knows how to use the pet door or something.

Oh, last but not least, don't let your kitten or the litter box near pregnant women - toxoplasmosis.

Okay, got it. I'll spray some water if he's bad and reward good behavior.

I recommend that you not put the cat's water near the litter box. A lot of people have all their cat amenities together but my experience is that cats won't drink water found too close to where they poop.

Teach it to ride on your shoulders. It's too hard to do it when they get big.

Get all the shots. No milk. Warm bed. Don't sit on it. Watch for errant tails and paws if you've got any chairs with wheels or rockers. Pretty simple.

you need to hold your kitten as much as possible when it's young, or when it gets older it won't like to be held. Also, teach it that a carrier is a nice thing to be in so you can take it to the vet a lot easier. Clean the litter box once a day, otherwise your cat may go outside the box because it's not clean enough. Make sure to change the water in its bowl once or twice a day, or get a water fountain it can drink out of. Cats tend to eat throughout the day, so always keep a little crunchy food in its bowl. (not a ton, just a little.) Give it lots and lots of pettings, and play with it and make sure to give it a nice place to sleep. (my cat loves her bed made with fluffy wool). Take it to the vet regularly, make sure to give it a flea treatment when it gets older if it goes outside, and make sure to brush it now when it's younger so it will learn to love grooming. It should be brushed about once a week, depending on how long its hair is. (this will keep the hair off your carpets and stuff, too). Good luck!

Get a chip for it. Put litter box very far from food. If he pees on the carpet don't hurt him/her, just put it in the litter box after they do that to train. Cat's don't learn by punishment. They learn by association. If your cat bites like crazy, it's a sign that it likens you to a sibling, not that it's aggressive. Do not use violence or any punishment to train a cat. Lifting them and picking them up to the proper place is always the answer.

get another one and watch them play together.

Also, start trimming its claws now, so it wont mind when its an adult. Can't really give you directions for that over the interwebs, but a vet tech or groomer can show you how.
