my first thought was that they somehow deflated an elephant, the second was that the elephant had a dreaded disease that ended in all of its organs spilling out.
Then I realized I'm a fucking retard, and it's just an elephant skin.
Dammit /an/, its too late for this.

Yeah it's just shed elephant skin. Elephants shed their skin a few times a year and grow new layers.

one question- why would you skin an elephant? Some kind of new handbag I don't know about? ....Elephant boots?

Well-

When my brother went to- mmm, I'm thinking Thailand but it could have been Malaysia, since I've been to neither it's easy to get confused- he brought back an elephant skin purse for my mother (complete with sustainable harvest certificates etc, customs didn't bat an eyelash so stop yapping) Over there elephants are treated in much the same way as any other livestock. They're working beasts, but they occasionally become food, leather and other objects that you would make from animal products. It's not a great issue, as in that country, elephants are domestic animals.

Zoos often retain bones, pelts, etc. from deceased animals for research and educational purposes. A lot of museums and universities get specimens that way. That could be the case with the OP image.

This makes sense to me, but it'd make more sense if elephants weren't endangered(maybe this type isn't?). How much was the purse?

Elephants are not endangered as a general rule. In some areas they are endangered, but in most areas they are not, and in some places there are so many of them they are a downright nuisance.

The Asian Elephant, Elephas maximus, as a species, is listed as 'endangered' by the IUCN regardless of location or population density in that location. Loxodonta africana is listed as 'vulnerable' and Loxodonta cyclotis hasn't been listed yet as it's a somewhat newly recognized species.
