Allergies Anonymous
I love cats, along with almost everyone else on this board. The only problem is, I am allergic to them.

I hope to buy a cat in the future, but I dont know if i can live with them without suffering. Is there anything i can do to rid my allergies to cats, or lower them? Same with dogs.
>> Allergies Kyouzame
Sorry, Anon. I think you're going to just have to suffer like the rest of us. XD

An effective way to cure animal allergies is already in the works. In the meantime, you could read more about hypoallergenic cats like the siberian forest cat, which is fine for most people with cat allergy.

Rubbish. There's no real evidence of that, only hearsay.

There are a number of products that will reduce allergens on the cat's fur, such as Allerpet and Nature's Miracle dander reducing spray.

Taking allergy medication regularly in addition to using allergen-reducing products to really helps.

The Siberian cat is also known for being hypoallergenic to many people. Although it has not been proven medically or scientifically, many people adamantly believe that the Siberian is hypoallergenic. They believe this because they are living proof. After living decades of being allergic to cats, I have seen adults cry because these loving cats have climbed all over them and they had no allergic reactions. Most Siberians have a low occurrence of the FELd1 enzyme in their salvia. This is what causes people to be allergic to cats. Many people that are allergic to cats have found that they can tolerate the Siberian and have little or no reaction to them. This is a cat-by-cat, person-by-person concept. If you are allergic to cats and want to try to see if you are allergic to Siberians, it is best to find someone near you with a Siberian or two so that you can spend a few hours with one and find out how you react. Personally, I have had very good luck with placing Siberians in allergy homes. About 75 percent of the people that come out to test have little or no reaction. Of these that have gotten a kitten from me, no one has had a problem having a Siberian or two in their home. There are no guarantees, but there is hope for allergy sufferers.

NO U. So X tells you have cancer because his uncle has it. You can't really see inside yourself and no one is willing to make a proper exam of you. Do you believe X?

No, but if there was a lump on my back and there was a history of cancer in my family then I'd be worried.

>low occurrence of the FELd1 enzyme in their salvia
An animal with a bleow average allergy trigger may cause allerigic reactions less frequently. Bullshit? To retarded anonymous it is.

But it is not _PROVEN_ my dear dyslexic hillbilly. Therefore it is as good as bullshit. FACTS MOTHERFUCKER, DO YOU HAVE THEM?

No matter what breed, all types of cats suck if you're allergic to them. Don't bother and get something you're not allergic to.

Even the non-haired Sphinx cats suck.
I got ringworm from petting one at someone's place.

Jesus God, how retarded can you possibly get? You need scientific proof of anything starting with the taste of your cornflakes, do you?

Don't associate your own stupidity with me. Would you rather have people thinking "oh lovely kitty" and have them suffocate or discard the cat when problems ensue? This is fucking SERIOUS BUSINESS and needs proper study, not "MEBBE I DUNNO LOL!" level of knowledge you seem to worship.

You don't know how science works, do you? Something is scientifically true when its been tested, and hasn't been shown to be incorrect -yet-

Its not some magic, infallible system for obtaining facts about life, the universe and everything.

What the heck are you blabbering about? I haven't said anything about anything being scientifically true. Actually, the only thing I've said which you seem to have trouble understanding, is exactly the opposite.

You can't prove things, you can only prove things to be incorrect. Saying that everything without definitive proof is bullshit is equal to saying that pretty much everything is bullshit.

True enough, but for the sake of simplification some things need to be kept as static variables, otherwise it's just bouncing around and never reaching conclusions.

The only way to build your resistance to cats is to own one. You must sniff the cat and shock your body into building an immunity.

had a roomate once, first time he came over he looked at my cat and kid you not..
"oh a cat.. I'm allergic to those.. *burries face in fur and inhales like hell*"

*blink* he did it every single time he came over... and yeah he'd react every time... but it never stopped him.

lmao. Morons. Its called... Allergy medication. ;) Dumb people are dumb.

Well, if you have a cat HAIR allergy. People are actually allergic to cat proteins, usually the Fel d 1 protein, which is found in the saliva and dandruff of cats. Any cat that produces it can potentially trigger an allergic reaction. So far no cat is known to naturally lack this protein (yes, Siberian cats have been tested to produce it too).

Some people with cat allergy tolerate small amounts of Fel 1 d, so they can keep cats that have a lower level of this allergen or produce less dandruff, but some are allergic to other feline proteins. So, essentially, until a foolproof way of curing your allergy exists, the only way to find out if you can keep a cat is to expose yourself - repeatedly - to cats which some allergics can tolerate, such as the Rex breeds, Siberian cat, Siamese, or Sphynx.

I have very severe reactions to cats, and it's never stopped me from having one in my house. I've found that it's the saliva that does the worst number on me.

I've found that after having my cat for about a year or two I started to develop a slight tolerance to my own cat. Not cats in general, just my own. I still couldn't let her lick me though. (She always tried to groom my eyebrows in my sleep, I'd wake up with big swollen face.)

I took advair (prescription) and an over-the-counter 24-hour non-drowsy allergy med.
Those two together made it possible to own and love up on my kitty.

Much luck!

That's... retarded.

But I suppose if the benefits of cohabitating with a cat are worth it...
>> Anonymous
I'd do more than that if I had to. I had her til the ripe old age of 17. I love that friggin kitty.
I think for the right cat, the trouble is worth it.

Sphynx cats release more allergens into the air because they lack hair to trap it.

I have mild cat allergies and really strong mold and cigarette allergies, once I got on Allegra I haven't gotten sick, and a great side effect is that I can pet the cat with no repercussions.
