Akita Inus are NOT for the dog novice!! I've owned over 6 dogs in my life, and I still have my hands full at work when I'm working with an Akita. Akitas were originally bred in Japan to be hunting dogs, protectors, and yes, even fighters. As hunters, they were bred to work independently from the human, and are thus prone to having a very large stubborn streak. They are aloof and can be very dog aggressive if not socialized properly as puppies. They are very powerful, one person or one family dogs and don't do well with strangers. They will also attack as well as bark, making them somewhat more of a lawsuit potential than, say, a Shiba. I have yet to see an Akita in public wearing less than a choke chain. However, with proper training, socialization, and exercise, they make loving, protective, fearless, and tireless companions
