I am being offered free guinea pigs (2 females) by someone who is moving away and unable to take them. Should I accept them, or are there burdens with guinea pigs that I should consider first? I've never had a guinea pig or any pet (but a few goldfish) before.

Well, first off, you have to clean them and feed them. Guinnea pigs need lots of vitamin C - you could put that in their water. If you don't, they might lose their ability to move their rear legs etc (scary stuff). Also, compared to other rodents, they are noisy, and not as smart as rats, but they sure are entertaining and they are not escape artists. If you have yard, let them run there sometimes (on a leash).

In south america, they are bred for eating, so if you ever get tired of your new pets...

I have 3 guinea pigs. They do do some annoying shit like squeek and chew on the linoleum under their bedding when I'm trying to sleep, but other than that, they're pretty of neat, and not much messier than any other rodent. I'd recommend putting them in a different room than the one you sleep in.

Guinea pigs are the most pointless pets, as mentioned all they do is squeak, eat and poop.
They will occasionally move around, and if you get one of those little house things for them, more than likely they will spend all their time either on top of it or sleeping inside it.
Lazy ass boring pets.

First off - do you actually want them? You don't sound to keen to be honest. If you really did want them, you wouldn't be asking the anon.

Actually, in some cultures, guinea pigs are kept and raised as a source of meat.

Guinea pigs are awesome, just feed them your vegetable leftovers (except cabbage- they die of gas) and they will love you like a junkie loves their dealer.
If you have a garden, make them a place to run around with a roof so that neighbouring cats don't kill them.
They can roam your house and will greet you with squeaks when you come home. They can be trained to go pee/poo on a newspaper but it's maybe too late for you.
If they're in a cage, give them a box to hide in and climb up on so they can watch you. This gives them confidence and helps them interact with you.

Burdens are:
- once a week cleaning the cage... when you get to the bottom layer of the sawdust the stench is very acrid. (put empty cereal packets at the btm so you can throw it away easily and so that guinea pig pee doesn't attack the cage floor).
- squeaking when ever they hear rustling (plastic bags) or smell lettuce.
- being watched by cute but annoying eyes whenever you're in the same room.
- the occasional pee in your lap if you stroke them for too long.
