My cat is really clingy to me. Well, scratch that, he's incredibly attached to me.

When I adopted him he was already a little older than most of the kittens at the local shelter. He was on the shy side, and very feminine for a male (I was surprised when the workers there told me he wasn't a female). I loved him to death, and was very afraid of the other pets interacting with him while he was still too small to put up a good fight if something were to go wrong. I continued to keep him in my room and he had shown me how independent he actually could be at such a young age. I thought he would mostly likely end up like my older cat of 14 who usually stayed to herself.

As he grew older, though, he would follow me everywhere. Even to the restroom... He would knock down the door with his little body and hop on the sink. He'd just watch me until I was finished then run away.

He's also very upset if you leave him out in the living room at night and/or day. Sometimes the door to the bedroom (the building here was poorly constructed when it comes to doors and other whatnots) will close due to the wind changes and my poor cat is locked out until I wake up to open it again.

He'll cry, whine, and claw at the door begging to be brought in again. Once he is inside, he'll rub against me, knead me, and even kiss at my face before going into a restful sleep.

TL;DR: Follows me everywhere and cries if left alone outside of the bedroom.

So here's my question: Is this normal for a cat to do and/or be like this?

He's also half siamese and pure white.

cats have very different characters. Depends on upbringing and living conditions.
Be glad that you got a love-dove there, my own cat used to fall into the living-chainsaw category.

Doesn't it also have to deal with type of Breed, as well?

Siams are very social cats and tend to be affectionate / sometimes clingy. But in the end it's a question of the cats individual character.

I have a tomecat who's like your cat, only he's half Main Coon (pic related). His favourite place is my shoulder, he tries to climb or jump onto it all the time. He also follows me into the restroom and sleeps on my chest at night. Now he's 6, and it got slightly better -- he sleeps more and isn't as much attention seeking as before. He can be a bit annoying sometimes, but he's still the very best cat I ever met.

If you want your cat to be a bit more independent, try distractions, like toys, other cats, hiding food around your house.... also, ignore him from time to time, so you don't encourage his attention seeking behaviour (crying, throwing things down, scratching things).

Op here,

Yeah he's about 16 months old now. Every time I try to ignore him he'll continue his dramatic crying (even when it comes to food - and he's overweight due to we can't keep him on a diet and try to feed my dog at the same time because my cat will eat anything put in front of him) but sometimes I just give up.

When it comes to night and he'll try to wake me up for some odd reason, I'll lock him out for a period of time. During that time... He will HOWL as if I've hurt him. I'll let it go on, trying my best to ignore it while sleeping... and after a few hours I'll give up and let him in.

Yet, the door will also close on its own, and I'll have to deal with the same issue.

The only toys he likes (I've tried all sorts of cat toys) is balls. He loves things that roll or bounce.

Some cats just bond closely with people. As much as I like to play up how unpleasant the snail-clan are, honestly, one of them is just like OP described.

I knew he was messed up from when he was born. He was half the size of his brother, all dainty and girly like, hence his name, Pairs (named after both the faggy pretty boy of legend and the ditz heiress). Everyone that saw the snailkittens thought he was so precious and cute and called him a girl.

And he stalks me. He must be in whatever room I am in. When I leave, apparently he sits at the door and waits for about an hour before wandering off, and when I get home, he is always right at the door, yowling his faggy little head off.

He is affectionate to the point that I don't know if I like him or hate him. I do not need to be awakened to someone cooing and licking my ear unless they can cook me breakfast afterwards. If my foot is sticking out from the edge of the bed, he will lay there and roll around on it like a little whore.

OP, does your cat also carry around and obsess over toys? Paris cries when his jingle balls roll under furniture and he can't get them.

I think there may be three templates for cat personalities.
Cool: this cat will hang out with you and let you pet it occasionally
Haet: wants you to die
Co-Dependant : pleeease open the door where are you oh god open the door i dont care if you are sleeping open the door so i can sleep too ok fine i will scratch a hole in the wall while yowling or dig up the carpet under the door let me in

Op here,

Yes my cat (his name is Coal) carries his toy balls over to his little cat bed (I brought it from my old home - use to be my old cat's bed, but she never used it) all the time. He naps with his toys while I'll be sitting on the couch .

He also will do anything he possibly can to get his toy back if it rolls under the couch.

You're lucky that he actually gets IN the cat bed. This one just sleeps.. wherever. That stripey thing? That is a sheet folded up specifically so that he could lay by the computer. But no, where my mouse is is better.

A white cat named coal? Error. Error.

LOL OP. My bad boy is the same way. But he's a lot less vocal now, but just as demanding of me. He was the runt of the litter too, and I had a few vet techs mistake him for a girl. It was lulzy. As for breed, I have no idea since he's my first cat.

Actually, I'm kind of appreciative that I got a lovey one for my first.

Yeah, my cat likes to sleep and stretch his arms out right on the monitor's screen so I can't even type or look at anything displayed on the computer.

Haha, my boyfriend decided to would be funny to name a white cat Coal for shits and giggles.

Everyone finds his name odd, and I usually just shrug and laugh it off.

Op here,

My cat was mostly likely the runt of the litter due to all his siblings were adopted immediately (but they also looked Siamese, while he was considered boring and unattractive to the pet shop who held him until he was too big by their standards and dump him off the the animal shelter - he was only 2 months old) and he was not.

He also was very little for how old he was at the time.

I guess if you own a cat that has this type of personality you have to be understand of it's feelings, but also try to teach to be more independent.

That or just be lovey-dovey back to it for the rest of its life.
>> Anonymous
>>248621
I may be a little biased because he's my first cat, but yeah I think runty ones appreciate the attention you give them more. That and I got him from an ASPCA foster house that had like 6 other cats, so that might've also been it.
>> Anonymous
Totally normal.

My cat who doesnt live with me anymore did the same thing. He would follow me everywhere would sleep next to me whenever I did anything. IF I was sitting on the floor doing homework he would come lay on all my books.

I used to have a stool next to my computer for other people, and when I was on the computer you would always see him sitting on that stool just chilling. Especially when I was using my webcam he loved attention.

Most annoying thing was when I would get up in the morning to shower. I always close the door even if no ones home its a habit. And he would meow and meow, even putting his little paws under the door and drag out whatever article of clothing he could get. He's about 12 now.

How does one define the difference between the cats actions, based on gender? I have lived my whole life with cats but I've never thought there to be difference in the way they act ("masculine"/"feminine"). Or is this one of those things where people try to read cat-behaviour with how they know humans to act, thinking other species have just as clearly defined stereotypes between genders?

I've read, I don't know it to be true, that tomcats tend to want to slump somewhere and sleep, while queencats tend to be more active, more curious, and more friendly.

My understanding of rats is that if you get a buck, it'll do things like run to the crook of your arm, settle down and fall asleep, while does will climb up to ride your shoulder and go with you as you do things.

I think it's legit to say there are some behavioral differences. I wonder what their actual nature is, though, since what I just recounted is petlore.

There is a definite difference in how they behave. Tomcats are generally lazy, more cuddly, and weigh more (even when not overweight). When they get upset though, they are usually more willing to fight instead of running away and hiding. Female cats tend twoards leaner bodies and being more active, at least until they are elderly or spayed. I've only met a few female cats that would really "fight", the others would hit and run. Girl cats seem to like string toys and things of that nature while males seem to prefer stuffed animals, balls, and things they can "catch". There ARE exceptions of course, but in general, if you want a cuddlebug get a boy and if you want a playmate get a girl.

My cat is slowly becoming like OP's. I rescued her and for the first week or so she just hid and acted like she hated me. Now about 5 months later she follows me around and when I'm sleeping sticks her face directly on mine and then curls up under my chin. She doesn't come into the bathroom (that's where bad things happen, like cleaning her ears and face) when I'm in there but she peeks around the door and watches my every move.

Noooot 100% true.

Out of the three boys I have, two are rather skittish but it's expected of one as he apparently had no mother from a few weeks to now .. save for his 'brother'. While the other one is at least five, it worries me how he reacts now, as a month or so ago he was extremely lovely.

I also had two ladies who where EXTREMELY clingy/affectionate. Hence the reason I do not rely on gender-biased info on male/females, but stick with their personality.

and OP -- Your boy is absolutely beautiful; I've always wanted a white kit-tee.

Op here,

I consider myself lucky finding a beautiful cat like Coal. I just woke up from a little nap (trying to get well) and he was pawing at me and cuddling his face against mine. He was basically saying 'please please wake up...'

My cat has taken to walking into my room and onto my bed carrying his favorite string and meowing to wake me up and play with him. When I don't wake up he falls asleep on the bed with his string.
He's sleeping next to me now. He's also annoyingly clingy, meowing and scratching the door when I lock him out of my room. But eventually, he did get over it so I can lock him out now.
>> Anonymous
Ugh, clingy cats are the worst. The ones that come across as too-friendly or needy tend to throw tantrums if something changes, and it doesn't suit them.

My mother had a cat that, once it was no longer the "baby", would piss in the same spot on the kitchen counter at least twice a day. I shouldn't say "would", it still does.
>> Anonymous
>>249037

Coal doesn't do that, because he cries and cries for him to brought in the bedroom. He's really well-mannered besides trying to score some food every hour.

I'm sorry about your mom's cat, though. I did have another cat who use to piss on the floor in my old home due to a traumatic event (in her perspective, I could say) happened which basically scarred her afterwards. She wasn't mentally sane, either.

Your cat adores you. This is rare, because cats are usually very independant creatures. Show your cat some love. Bask in the glory of the fact you have an animal that is so loyal.

The cause of this may have been the isolation of you keeping him in your room all the time. He knows only you, so trusts you the most. Hence why he's so attached.
I now miss my kitty. She used to come up to my room every morning to wake me up first. :( She was only a moggie but she would always be waiting on my bed when I came back from work, or from when I was out, she would sleep in my room w henever I went on holiday and wait for me to come back, and though she wasn't very active, she would always come to my room to snooze on my bed when I went to sleep. ... Course she would cry to be let out later, but she'd sleep there for a while.

Also, she posed for pictures.

Wow, you are so stupid. You didn't socialize him properly (keeping animals away from bigger ones i.e. small cat kept away from big cat) is really dumb- you must supervise their interactions, but they NEED to interact to learn how to properly socialize. Now it will be extremely difficult to help him stop this behavior.
