Very expensive, those are.

:( The first post looks very much like my betta who died yesterday. We've got some sort of obnoxious fungus, and we didn't get to treat him in time.

Generic Halfmoons will run you about $50 if you know where to look. That's your lowest end very nice betta.

dude, I had 4 bettas! since they're only 4-5 bucks a pop, I kept buyin em. Too bad my roommate tried to pite them against each other in the same tank. one of em lost its fin.
With proper care they live a long ass time. there's one study that says if you give it proper exercise by chasing it around with your finger once a week, it can live all the way up to seven years. Most healthy average is like 2 years though.

Why yes, he is mine. He'll be about two years old in a month or so. I actually bought him solely because he was yellow/orange, and I'd never seen one that color before.

Betta Splendens

I remember having one, it used to display at me through the glass, I found it horribly amusing.

Bettas can go up to about $200 if you buy them from a specialty breeder for bettas. I own two. Both are black/blue. One female one male. The male is a crown tail though.

I had a betta and he lasted a little over a year. Later on, he got this really big belly and I thought I was over-feeding so I put him on a diet but it didn't work. He ended up not being able to swim well (not able to surface, floating on one side) and died soon after. Anyone know what happened?

(Pic is from when I first rescued him from Wal*Mart.)

Dropsy, perhaps? That's how mine died. (scales are raised when you look down at it, like a pinecone.)

Yep, same thing happen to mine. I think I overfed it. :( How long are they supposed to live though?
>> Anonymous
>>49140
No, it wasn't that. I checked for the scale-tell. His scales were flat, but his belly (or more likely his swim bladder) was swollen and white-ish. Perhaps bad water. I don't know. I cleaned his one-gallon bowl every week.
I think I just sorely underestimated how much care even the hardiest of animals needs ;_;

I just got a betta! he is red and shiny blue. he is a baby, and pretty energetic. there were others in his shipment that were sick. one had a really puffy belly like>>49061. What can I do to keep my little guy from getting sick?
>> Anonymous
Bettas with swollen stomachs.. a problem I remember seeing but I don't remember the exact treatment. Dropsy is always a possibility (if you see 'em pineconing) but there's another cause of bloat, too.. maybe a parasite? I'd recommend finding (and getting well acquainted with) the fish department of a pet store who 1) knows what they're doing and 2) cares. They're out there, I've met them (and worked for 'em).

Overfeeding is a pretty big issue with bettas, though. Unless you've got some wildly overactive one, just five or six of those little food pellets a day or even every other day is typically enough.

You could try finding a good medication but make sure you find out if it's okay to use in an unfiltered bowl or not, depending on what you keep your betta in, etc.

I have one, changes colors, red in summer, blue in winter. I keep him by the bucket we use for food scraps, because he leaps out of the water and catches fruit flies.
Far, far better than mere goldfish.

I don't know where you get your halfmoons, but here, shit quality (red washed up the ass) halfmoons go for 15, maybe twenty, though the rays aren't necessarily 1-2. Even on aquabid you can find stuff for much cheaper, save of course the shipping.
