K guys, I used some tap water and put some chemicals in it to get rid of the chlorine and all that and left it for a couple days before I did anything.Problem now is, the PH is too high and even with adding chemicals to balance out the PH, it still stays at 7.8. The bottle said that some basic kinds of tap water may be resistant to PH balancers. So, is there any kind of water I could use? Would spring water from the supermarket work?
tried toilet water?
>>110961Only when they die.
if you got one of those water vending machines near you that do reverse osmosis, that is good, their ph averages around 6.8-7.2, and only .25/gallonfish stores give you the same thing for .40/gallon
oh , and those chemical balancers are bad, they usually do more harm than good. if your tank is a new tank then google up about starting a new tank, you need to set up the bacteria for it, which takes about a month or so.
distilled water from your local grocery store.
>>110991Well its not a new tank, its been going for a few months now with fish coming in and out so that cycle part should be done with. And how bad are we talking really? Because the PH hasnt changed at all or do you mean it'll remove the bacteria from the filter and what not? Also, the vending machines, you mean those things that replace the water from the jugs like I have in my picture?
filter the water through peat(without fertilizers) to lower the ph.

Some places just have naturally high pH. I worked at a pet store that sold fish and our pH was typically in that range. If wherever you're buying fish from has the same kind of attributes, there should be no problem with adjusting their fish to your tank. Also, I've been told that using distilled water can be bad because it takes a lot of the good stuff out of the water that fish need, electrolytes and stuff.
Spring water harbors parasites, use this stuff called PhDown by API.. works right when I put it in the tank.. All you need is a capful.
Adding wood to the tank helps lower the PH. Buy a few big pieces of aquarium wood (you may have to soak it for a while, ask the the store if it needs to be presoaked). It will help keep the PH lower if/when you can get it to acceptable levels.
