Well, considering all dogs come from wolves from inbreeding (yes, even the fucking chihuahua ) and German Shepards are third closest generation wise to the wolf. After the Malamute and the Husky naturally. Also, GS were bred to keep the wolfy look, hence why they look wolfy.

I thought it was old breeds like the Chow Chow and stuff that were closest to the wolf genetically. German Shepherds originated 1880s-ish. Chow chows have been around for 2000-3000 years so it seems they would be closer to the wolf.

Of course, I could be pulling all this out of my ass. Have a puppy picture.

No, you are correct. German shepherds and even huskies, despite their lupine appearance, are not any more closely related to wolves than most other dog breeds (yes, including terriers, toys, and the like). Their wolf-like appearance is simply part of what they were bred for. Of course, a few animals might have wolf content, but only due to the fact that they are commonly used to produce wolf hybrids, and obviously these are not purebred GSDs or huskies.

The dogs which are genetically closest to wolves are primitive breeds, such as the chow chow which you mentioned, the Tibetan spaniel, basenji, and pharoah hounds.
