>>229134 Wow. Bettas are in a group called Anabantids (which includes other fish like gouramis) that have a labyrinth organ that allows them to breathe very moist air from the surface. A far cry from being the only fish that can do this, and a far cry from a genetic alteration.
>>229136 First off, it's spelled "bettas," and pronounced with a long "a" sound, not like the Greek letter. Second, they do not need a small container, though they do like a small hiding area, be it made of plants or a decoration/cave of some sort. Third, male and female bettas CANNOT be kept together for any length of time. If the female wants to mate, they mate, and then the male chases her off from the bubble nest. If there's nowhere for her to go, he kills her, because she is a threat to the eggs/fry. If the female doesn't want to mate, he kills her anyway.
Female bettas should be kept in groups of no less than three due to aggression/pecking orders, and in a tank of no less than 10 gallons. They are just as pugnacious as their male counterparts as far as territory goes, and even in the conditions I described, they don't always play nice.
