I've had my mice for a couple of months now. I just got a baby rat about a week ago. Will the rat hurt the mice when he gets older or will he get used to them? Also how can I get him to be more social? He's not too bad he crawls all over and ends up hiding in my hair.

I think something needs to be cleared up now, rats are the males of the mouse species, He will not hurt his female friends only impregnant them.

But aren't there female rats too? And male mice.. I'm confused. Anyways I just saw the rat bite the white one out of the tube so I removed it. Now their cuddling. The hell? Is that normal?

Rats and mice ARE different and you should NOT keep them together at all, if that is what you are planning. They are both different species and should be kept separately. I wouldn't even recommend 'visits' without something between the rat and mice.

While your rat is young, get another male rat, preferably young. Your rat is just going to get lonely(no matter how much time you spend with it) and will live a shorter life without a friend. Your rat will not love you any less and will probably be more social.
You can get an older rat and introduce the two, but you are better off getting another young male to buddy up with your current male.

Don't keep them together, or even put them together temporarily. Both animals can be territorial if the mood strikes them. Rtas also will kill and eat mice on occasion.

really what the hell
your rat would fucking eat these things for lunch when its bigger

I wouldn't keep them together when he gets big but I figured while he was their size...

Anyways I put the mice back in their cage. They where cute while cuddled up... Oh well.

Toejam and Earl. Earl is the white one, Toejam the black. Alas, poor Earl. We hardly knew ye. Cancer did take him away from us. He was too young.

Now Toejam chews on his cage if I don't pay attention to him all the time :/

What the fuck man? It would be hilarious if you had said "chinese are the males, japanese are the females" or something, but srsly mixing rats and mice could get them killed. You just get slapped for saying the chink/jap thing.

OP: Remove the rat from the cage asap. Rats and mice are natural advesaries. They do not get along as adults. If they were raised together, there might be a chance it would be okay, but in the long run, they will end up hurting eachother.

I would suggest getting another rat of the same gender and roughly the same age, even better would be from the same litter.

If you wanted them to be 'friends' or have 'playtime' together, then get two wire cages and put them next to eachother, rats in one mice in the other. Never ever allow them together unsupervised, but if they are used to eachother's smell and you watch close, they could get along tolerably.

Interspecies friendships can happen, but take a lot of work and effort on the part of the human, and exceptional animals. Unless you have the proper training, you should be extremely cautious about mixing species.

If the baby rat accepts teh mice already there early on I dont think there is really much risk of fighting and killing.

Look at the bizarre animal pairings in the world, and bizarre pets. It's possible for natural born enemies to coexist peacefully.

As long as they learn to get along at a very young age they will tolerate each other.

Keep them well feed!
Watch and listen for any telltale signs of fighting if it does happen.
