So my new little pet rats seem to love pulling my mouth open, sticking their head in, and going crazy with their tongues. Licking my teeth and shit all over. I find it to be horribly cute, and love getting their little rat kisses, but....could I get sick from something like that?

Brush your goddamn teeth so that your rats don't confuse your pie-hole for their fucking food dish.

Too disgusting to be for real. But if not a troll, I hope you die.

If you go read pet rat message boards and the like, you will see a lot of rat owners say this. It seems at least somewhat common. Rats are as clean as the cage you keep them in, so they're not necessarily dirty, and they don't have any diseases that they can pass to you. They're just trying to groom you.

It's just kinda weird and I wouldn't go around telling people about it.

I've also read that rats like to chew off people's moles and that sometimes they do it before the person even knows what's happening.

That I can believe, having owned rats when I was younger, I'm aware how quickly they can bite through things.

i would be more worried about the rat getting sick, tbh.

I used to have a cockatiel who'd stick her head in my mouth and nibble at my teeth / tongue.

It was cute, but gross because I've seen her nibbling her own poo >_>;

It's not disgusting, and It's true. It's not like they have tons of spit that get's everywhere. It's less disgusting than the people who let their DOGS do it.

I just saw something on National Geographic. "Taboo" had an episode about this, though this was an entire temple community that lived among rats, believing the temple rats to be humans in past lives who reincarnated after living virtuous lives.

They shared milk with the rats, shared food with the rats (literally letting the rats chew on a banana, then the guy would eat some of the same banana, then hand it back to the rats, and so forth).

They're just grooming you, but lots of humans carry strep bacteria in our mouths and throats, and that kills rats in about three days, so really it can be dangerous for your rats.

But, yeah, catching something from your rat is pretty rare. I recommend encouraging them to just lick your hands and nose and other externals instead...

You know rats lick each others assholes and genitals, right?

As do most animals.

Rats seem to love the smell of mint, so this would just encourage them.

You're no more likely to get sick from this than the chick in your pic is likely to get sick from the dog.
