>Dolphins and whales are dumber than goldfish and don't have the know-how to match a rat, new research from South Africa has revealed.

>For years, humans have assumed the large brains of dolphins meant the mammals were highly intelligent.

>Paul Manger from Johannesburg's University of the Witwatersrand, however, says it is not intelligence that created the dolphin super-brain – it's the cold.

>In order to survive underwater, these warm-blooded animals developed brains that have a lot of the insulating material – called glia – but not too many neurons, which is the grey stuff that counts for reasoned thinking.

>”Goldfish can solve problems that dolphins can't. When a goldfish jumps out of its bowl, it's thinking past its immediate environment. Dolphins don't have the cognitive leap,” Mr. Manger said in a telephone interview Thursday.

>”Dolphins can do some things, but they have to be trained to do them. That's more of a reflection of low-intelligence.”

This is where I stopped reading.

I have a goldfish who, whenever I change the scenery in the tank, finds a way to get stuck inside something.

Do some research about South Africa and lurk the fuck more.
>> Anonymous
South Africa is the country where leading scientists swear up and down that AIDS is caused by HIV meds. All of their scientists are suspect until their results have been double and triple-checked by people who know what the fuck they're doing.

You don't think some of those scientists might be influenced to say those things, by I don't know, money? threats? politics? Oh that's just like American scientists then.
>> Anonymous
I can't think of any American scientist who has, in recent memory, said anything as ridiculously stupid as the crap that South African scientists spew forth. Their entire scientific apparatus is compromised, and until they figure out what the fuck they're doing, they should be treated as if their stupidity is contagious.

Besides, Manger's "research" has already been thoroughly debunked, as is. His statements that dolphins have poor signal processing capabilities are completely invalidated by physiological studies showing a brain stem transmission speed approaching that of the rat, etc. He's another typical worthless South African scientist.

I thought goldfish couldn't hold memories for more than a few seconds...doesnt that mean they can't learn and therefor make them unintelligent?
>> Anonymous
>>110536

They can definitely learn at a low level. Sound of feeder rotating means it's eating time, green net in the tank means holy shit run away, that kind of stuff. Reinforcement learning requires very little actual *memory* if the action and the reward are close enough together in time. (They have to remember, in a sense, which action and which award go together, but that's a different form of 'memory'.)

That's why electroshock therapy works so well.

South Africa is also the home of the first heart transplant. It's not the scientists who spew this stupid shit. It's the politicians.

Jingoistic cock-waving aside, there's always one or two really stupid studies like this rolling around that are based on simplistic and selective data. The dolphin doesn't try to jump out of its tank because it's smart enough to figure out that there isn't any water out there. Goldfish haven't. Whales beach themselves, but it usually isn't fot the same reasons.

The goldfish I have in my outdoor pond know that when I close my sliding door in the morning, it's about 15 seconds to feeding time.
They're there with gaping mouths.

Damn they're fat little buggers too.

And how did this university genius learn to study such things? Oh that's right, he had to be trained, guess that's a reflection of low-intelligence

That's a cheap excuse for putting a goldfish into a tiny, boring bowl. Goldfish are very capable of learning. Pic very related.
