So am I supposed to just fill my rats food bowl and refill it every time they eat all their food, or am I supposed to give them a certain amount each day or what? Do I only give them food at certain times?

Pic related, it's one of my rats in his favorite hiding spot...my sleeve.

One 'science magazine' claimed that animals (tested on rats) live longer if they eat small amounts of food several times a day. I don't have any links nor pics to prove that (I don't have a scanner and the mag's in Finnish)

i worked at a pet store for a year and a half, so I would say that while you should give fresh food+water daily, It's ok if you miss a day once in a while

Rats don't overeat. They eat what they need and save/stash the rest for later. Generally rat owners just keep their bowl filled. Lab blocks (what I feed) are designed to be available at all times to rats. Calorie restriction is a gimmick to increase their lifespan. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, but it's not necessary in order to keep them healthy. If you do calorie restriction you would have to be very careful and diligent with it, and do a lot of research first.

I used a recommended commercial rat food. I found that if I topped up the food bowl every day, they'd eat and stash the bits they liked, but leave the bits they didn't, which was generally the seeds and vitamin pellet portion. I used to top it up every few days, after they were forced to eat some of the less 'popular' food, which I assume was the part that was 'good' for them. Plus it avoided wasting a scoopful of the stuff they hated.
