Hey /an/

Ausfag here. I've been keeping a huntsman spider in a big nutella jar since new years day, and it was doing the most strangest thing i've seen it done yet, (besides it eating another huntsman).

Anyway, it made a web bag, roughly around 2cm wide. I put my light over it and there was green stuff glowing from it.

Does anyone know what it is?

The spider is sitting on top of it now, looks like it's guarding it. I took a video of it this morning making it, I'll upload to youtube in a while.

But I just want to know if it has something to do with reproduction, and what the green stuff is.

Egg sac, maybe? That would be my first guess.

That was mine as well. If it is, I'll need to buy a big aquarium so I don't have little spiders running around my room.

Nature :D!

Typical spider egg sac.
It wants to infest you when you sleep and one day your chest will burst and lotsa spiders will emerge.

get lighter, KILL IT WITH FIRE

or open the jar and let it free, unless you want to see what it's like to have a jar full on baby spiders with no food, feasting upon each other, which if you do, pics

obvious egg sac is obvious.

i'd probably just open the lid and set it outside in the backyard. she and the babies will do a bit better on their own..unless you are ready to care for hundreds of baby spiders. you can, as has been said, let them cannibalize each other until they are at a more manageable number..but even then you'll have to feed a bunch of baby spiders.

your spider is a mommy now :3

It's a radioactive spider. You know what to do.

I'm planning to buy a plastic fish tank container

Thanks
Your friendly neighborhood soon-to-be Spiderman :)

Let the babies eat each other for a few generations. Soon, evolution will kick in, and you'll have a subspecies of melee god spiders.

I kept one of these jumpers, (Phidippus audax) in a Snapple bottle for a few months. He readily ate small flies until I decided to let him go. He was a male, so no egg sac.

P. audax, or "Bold Jumpers," are just plain crazy. One of them leapt out of a bush and bit me, and another tried to attack my foot.

Aren't those Daddy Long-legs? I thought those weren't actual spiders.

Depends what part of the world you live in, the name Daddy Long Legs has been attributed to a ridiculous number of insects and arachnids.

1. Don't a lot of spiders kill and eat their mate after doing the deed?

and

2. OP, aquariums and such usually have wire grating. Baby spiders will get out VERY EASILY. I'd chuck the damn eggsack out the window, or light it on fire.

I'm in Canada and we call those things Daddy Long-Legs. In any case, the things in that picture: insects or arachnids?

They look very much like harvestmen. Harvestmen are arachnids but are not considered true spiders. Order Opiliones according to my "Spiders and their Kin" (Levi, Levi & Zim)

In TX, where that picture was taken, they're called daddy long legs and are spiders. http://flickr.com/photos/pyxopotamus/sets/72157601220647757/
