After waking up to find that my cat had pretty much destroyed his dew claw to where there is only a little bloody stub of a claw, I realized the smart thing to do was disinfect it with some isopropyl rubbing alcohol and use cautery power to stop the bleeding. But...my cat didn't seem to like the idea of a strange substance on his paw so he's been destroying my hard work by licking it off for the past five minutes. I know this is probably going to sound dumb...but I have no experience with my animals bleeding like this. Can he get sick from eating that cautery powder? It really wasn't that much...just enough to cover the bleeding sight.

Pic related: It's the cute bastard.

are you talking about something like quik-stop? the stuff you use when you quik an animals nails?

if so then yes he can get sick from it. But that shit tastes god awful so who knows why he's licking it. cats are weird.

try and get some gauze to wrap the paw in for the first few nights and make sure to disinfect it with hydrogen peroxide once and then alcohol subsequently. take the gauze off after a couple days, make sure he doesnt chew at it and it should be fine

What you'll want to do is shave the area around where the dew claw is/was. This will help to see if there are any other injuries in the area. Afterwards, disinfect it with a mixture of Bactine and iodine (another reason to shave the area, iodine will permanently stain his fur orange).

To make sure he does not lick it off, get yourself some bandaging and wrap it up tightly, using surgical tape to secure it.

Repeat this process 2-3 times a day for a week. If you find that the wound is getting worse, or the cat is tearing the bandaging to shreads too much, take it to the vet immediately.
