Ferrets Anonymous
So i've been trying to get a Ferret for years and no matter how much i try my mom keeps stopping me. The only reason she gives is that she doesnt like ferrets because they are rodents, which is total BS since ive owned both Hamsters and Mice that she herself bought for me. Also ive noticed throughout the years that no matter how bad a present is, she says to never return it. So i asked my friend to get a ferret for me and he's bringing it by next week. Now the problem, what the hell am i going to tell my mother? lol

Well. Um, First of all. Ferrets aren't even rodents. So that argument is over.
They're Mustelids. Related to otters, raccoons and Weasels.
But that aside, please keep in mind they're pretty expensive pets to keep. They can run into quite a few medical problems. Plus if you get the good stuff, their food is expensive.
Just do more search, sounds like you need it, if you and your mom honestly thought Ferrets were rodents.

I think the real problem is that your mother is stupid.

OP here. I KNOW they arent rodents. But When i tell her that she just blows me off. And i have done my research. I have the money to pay for his needs and medical bills. And i already have a spot for him set up in my room.

>>341949
Theres no need to insult her.

She's stubborn then. Ferrets are awesome. I have two. But again, they're a lot of work.
>> Anonymous
>>341955
OP here. I agree, she IS just being stubborn. Its not that she doesnt like pets, cause i already own 3 dogs, 5 cats, and horse. And my cousin owns one and Its even climbed up on her lap when we went to his house. But she just keeps saying NO. Hopefully, she wont make me return the one my friend is bringing me. That would just SUCK

Why don't you wait until you grow up and then you can have any kind of pet you want.

Just tell your mom to chill. its your pet and youre the one taking care of it so why is she bitching? Besides if you already have all those others pets, whats the big deal?
>> tigerfeather !CrwtTbFNxQ
>>341969
Probably because mom has to pay for it, will have to put up with it running around the house and tearing shit up, etc.

We don't know what kind of kid OP is (also, underage b&), and for all we know he killed his hamsters and mice due to neglect. Ferrets are a bit of a step up from smaller caged rodents, and I can understand if his mom thinks that he's not up to the task of taking care of one.

OP, how long did your hamster and mice live? Dogs and horses can easily be pawned off on moms, so who's to say how much the kid actually takes CARE of these animals. Also, you have the money for vet bills for ferrets? Don't tell me that you have some sort of trust fund or SSI or something, because I can understand your mom not wanting you to use that money for a pet.

OP here. First of, Im a girl lol. Second, i had my hamsters for 4-5 years. One got out and never came back and the other got sick and died. It wasnt my fault. My mouse lived 3 years, before it got some sort of infection in his throat and my step dad put him to sleep. Hes a vet in training. I've had my eldest dog for 10 years, the middle one is 5 and my youngest is only 2. My eldest cat is 7 and shes the mother of the other 4. My horse is 2. i do take care of my animals, spent time with them, train them, and everything else.

Of course there is no way of knowing how responsible you really are, but ferrets are a great deal more trouble than a cat, dog, horse or even all three together. Well maybe not a horse, never had one (what's up with that anyway, spoiled?). You really need to make sure you ferret-proof your house/room. Those sneaky bastards will climb in anywhere, on anything and under everything. The best bet is just to have a large cage and only let him out when you provide 100% attention. And dont give him anything to eat other than their standard food, Weasel diabetes is easy to get.
>> Anonymous
Maybe she doesn't like them. The end. If you live in your parents house you should abide by their rules. Don't like it? Move out and get yourself a stinky ferret.
>> Anonymous
i really hope she makes you return it.

she probably doesnt want to take care of it and being that youre 16 she knows that its going to get pawned off on her, and she probably has too many animals to take care of already. also i highly doubt you have the money for the vet bills, saving up the hundred dollars your grandma gave you for your birthday isnt going to cover it.

stop being a spoiled little bitch and wait a couple years and get one when you live on your own.
>> Anonymous
Firstly, how old are you?
Secondly, don't get a ferret. I'm not saying their bad pets, but they can be with the wrong person. Here are some of my experiences with my sisters ferrets.

1. Even de-sented, they smell horrible. Whatever room they sleep in will be horrendous. You'll probably get used to it if its your room, but do not expect any friends or family members to hang out.
2. Ferrets get ill frequently. Two of our ferrets died prematurely of cancer. One of them died during an operation to remove a tumor. (This operation cost about 500$ by the way). The other had a stomach rupture from a tumor on her liver puncturing through her stomach.
3. They are harder to train than cats. Sure, they can be litter box trained, but they'll frequently ignore litter boxes and prefer carpet or tile. Our boy liked to tip them over and shit on top, spilling litter and dried shit everywhere.
--->
>> Anonymous
>>342732cont
4. If it escapes from the house, you will never see it again. My brother accidentally left a door open downstairs and our first boy ran outside. Despite calls and chases and a 5 hour search involving the entire family, he was never found.
5. Ferret food is expensive, and if not a good enough quality your ferret can get sick.
6. Ferrets require at LEAST 3 hours of play outside of their cage a day. This does not mean you can just let your ferret outside of the cage and have them run about. They must be supervised at all times or they will damage the house, possibly escape, or hurt themselves.
7. They eat rubber. Anything rubber will be chewed. Phone buttons, remote buttons, video game controller parts, rubber balls, ect. This not only destroys your electronics, but the rubber can get impounded in their stomach cause them to get sick, and even die.

I've have two dogs, and two cats. None of these were even close to the demand that a ferret takes. These are NOT cage animals. They are not dogs, they will not obey and admire you. They are not cats, they will never be independent of your care.
>> Anonymous
When you've had that thing a few months you're going to realise you're mum was right. It will make your house smell; they are expensive to feed and get sick easily; they need to spend 3-4 hours a day outside their cage, and if you don't supervise it then it'll tear everything in your house to shreds.
>> Anonymous
>>342733
speaking of your conclusion

why do dogs admire you while cats don't love you in any way what so ever

I understand why a dog would like you because you feed it, but why does it want to protect you when you feed a cat and it couldn't care less?
>> Anonymous
>>342735
Short answer: dogs are pack animals, cats are solitary.

Also, i was just picking out admirable and typical attributes of both cats and dogs to compare with ferrets.
>> Anonymous
OP, honestly you should not get a ferret. A ferret is a kind of pet that is not just something you will keep, but everybody who lives with you will be affected by. If your mother (you know, the person who keeps a roof over your head, pays bills, and feeds you) says you shouldn't get a ferret, surprising her with said ferret one day is probably a bad idea.
>> Anonymous
I had a ferret for nearly 12 years, and they can be very difficult to take care of, as many before me have already said. First and foremost, they stink. Now, I can barely smell, but everyone else noticed it. Also, it is possible to let them run around semi-unsupervised. However, you need to *know* that the room is completly ferret proof. They can be very intellegent, but they have the curiosity of a 2 year old and the mobility to make it to places you never thought possible. I watched my girl squeeze under doors and jump off of lamps above head hight to attack me as I passed by - don't ask me how she got up there. They MUST HAVE exercise daily though.

All this said, they can be wonderful pets, but you really should not try to push it on your mom. I had a good deal of trouble with mine, and my parrents were behind me the enitre way. You will need some support in this, don't try and do it solo - even many adults who own ferrets share the responsibilites with another adult

Ferrets are adorable and awesome. They're so much fun and whatnot.
But, seriously, they're difficult as fuck to keep. You have to clean its litterbox once a week at LEAST, and that's if you have the stuff you put in their water to make their shit smell less. They need constant excersize, and they'll slip into places you didn't think was possible. They're extremely clever. They may decide to wreck or make a mess of your room. Worst of all, my ferret always wanted to play when I went to bed, so if it was too late, and I couldn't take her out, she'd bang her litterbox around and make as much noise as possible.
So yes, they're awesome, but it's going to be VERY difficult. Don't get a ferret if you're not prepared for a lot of hardships about it; it's not fair to the ferret.

Ferrets sound like horrible pets. Cute as hell though.
>> Anonymous
>>343652
They're great pets, but only if you're experienced enough for them. If you are, they're adorable, funny, entertaining, pretty much the best thing ever. But if you're incompetent, they're the worst thing besides landshark.
>> Anonymous
>>343650
Clean the litter box once a week?! That'd make whatever room the ferret is in stink like high hell and might even be too dirty for the ferret to poop in the box.

Clean the litter box out twice a day is more like it. For other info just search for ferret forums.

And ferrets don't 'stink' if your ferret stinks you are doing something wrong. The ferrets at petstores stink because of bad food, the cage they live in is usually not ventilated well and the bedding they sleep on is the carefresh junk which just lets them marinate in stinkey.

Best thing is get them a nice ferret nation cage, some decent fleece bedding (or even old shirts and t shirts) and wash the bedding every week. Give them good food, with all that combined they'll just have their normal smell minus any sort of funk.
>> cichlid !!WhOQyKVA829
>>343949

Truth.
...but ferrets normal smell is still pretty rank.
We have high quality pet food and cleaned the cage biweekly, and had them all desented. Still couldn't spend to long in the room they were kept in cause of the smell.

>>343655
srry but if I wanted to work that hard on an animal, it would be for something intelligent that doesn't smell and can actually do something other than make a mess

Hit the nail right on the head with the "curiosity of a 2 year old" remark. The best test for someone who wants to get a pet ferret is to ask them if they like toddlers. Ferrets are mischievous, very high energy pets that require a lot of attention. That said, they can be a lot of fun and if you don't mind the smell they can be great companions. If you have the patience to deal with them they can be really good pets, but if you don't my advice is just get a cat or a dog.
>> Anonymous !uz8u2XmvbY
Ferrets = part of the Weasel family, not rodents.

Ferrets are pretty tight, they are predators so they can handle surgery etc unlike prey animals, who flip out at anything. I've got 4 ferrets atm, the most we ever owned at once was 6. The smell isnt that bad at all heh, just clean their bedding and scoop regularly. Ferret = perfect mix between a cat and a dog. Definately agree with some of the posters here, most peeps are too lazy/dumb to take care of ferrets. You can kill them quick if yer a fat fucker and they get depressed if you keep them in a cage, you MUST give them 2-3 hours of "playtime" a day imo. We let ours out of their ferret nation cage a good 6 hours a day minimum usualy, like atm I'm in the computer room, and the 4 fuzzy's are out playing in their room (ie. living room), they have 3 litter boxes, and usualy just play for an hour or 2 then pass out, we put them up when we go to bed. Let them back out as we're getting ready for work, then back in cage when we leave for work. They couldnt be happier. At our old apartment we let them out 24/7, which in the end I think just made them boring, they got bored with everything and took their freedom for granted. They seem more lively when they have intermittent playtime.

Also... FUCK MEERCATS, god damn they are everywhere, billboards, tv, movies now, fucking annoying. I guess it's better than ferrets being uber popular tho, for every dipshit would get one then take it to a shelter and we'd have an even bigger problem with unwanted ferrets than we allready have.

that is all. Ferrets rule. Dont let them play with other pets, no matter how much you trust the other pets. Dogs may act ok around them, but eventually they WILL kill it, seen it happen many times to other peeps ferrets.

once a week!?! BAH!!!!!!!!! i scoop mine everyday and fully change it AT LEAST 2 times a week!!!!! (i have 3 ferrets and have posted in this thread 3 times now) also "that stuff you put in their water to make their shit smell less" is no good and can give them bacterial infections! (i unfortunately know from experience). pretty much, if you need to come to 4chan for info on ferrets, you probably should NOT get one. and as for you op, dont get a fucking ferret you sound like a douche

pic is my girl Brewster! my cuz goes to art school and needed a modal! isn't she BEAUTIFUL!!
