Li'l Brudder Anonymous
There was this poor, retarded hamster in the feeder bin at a store I was visiting - his teeth were so overgrown that they looked like tusks, and all the other hamsters were ganging up for him. Of course, I felt sorry for the little dude and took him home. He was instantly friendly (something that is very uncommon in any hamster I've ever had), and would cling to the side of the cage to get attention. He also enjoyed licking fingers, but not nibbling. And yes, he could open his mouth, though I don't know how.

Unsurprisingly, the little guy passed about 26 hours after we got him. At least he was a happy dude for that long. =( Pic related.

Ganging up ON him, not for him. Durrr, I are can type.

Now, ITT, cute and friendly hamster types! Since we bought the cage specially for him, we'd like to clean it out and use it again to give a little fuzzy thing a home. I just hope we don't get a nippy bitch. I highly doubt our next one will be as sweet-natured as he was =(

Noooooo li'l brudder *waaah*

OP: You didn't stop to think about clipping his teeth so he could *EAT*?

That sounds unbelievably hard to do. You could accidentally rip its teeth out, or too short, etc. Even filing it would probably give the poor thing a heart attack.

Another option could have been to crush up its food, add a little faster and feed it with a syringe. Either way I highly doubt it would have still lived anyway.

Thanks, OP.
Most of my rats were from pet stores with bad conditions. Like my two girls were destined for a life of heavy breeding like their mom. I wish I could buy all the animals in the pet store just because I feel bad. But I also realize that for each suffering animal I buy, more will just take its place.

Black bear hamsters are friendly.. at least the ones I have.

Thanks for making the tusky hammy's life better before he went.

Hamsters can actually open their mouths REALLY wide. Ever see them when they yawn?

You take the hamster to a vet, they have tools for clipping and it's a relatively easy process. He probably starved to death because he couldn't chew anything.

Let this be a lesson to all hamster and rodent owners: GIVE THEM THINGS TO CHEW ON or else they'll end up like this.

"Black bear hamsters" means nothing.

Their species name is Syrian. There are different color variations with stupid names like 'teddy bear' and 'black bear' to make people think they're different, but they're all Syrians. I really get sick of the misconception that black bears are so cute and tame when all that's different about them is their color.

I've never given my hamster anything to chew on and her teeth aren't overgrown at all.

Actually, I did try clipping them. And he could eat, though I don't know how... He even had one side that he could fill his cheek pouch in. We gave him some teeny-tiny seeds to eat just in case the bigger food was too hard.

But since I felt like I was going to cut his cheek, we decided to take him to the vet the next day. Yes, the next day - it was labor day, and nowhere was open. He didn't make it, though.

OP here again. I usually want to buy all the animals too, but I can hold myself back for the most part. This guy was just so pathetic that I couldn't help it!

I know how hard it is to resist, but you know that by purchasing an animal like that from a store, you're supporting their business and therefore the way they treated that animal?

Actually, my sister's friend that works there got it for us. They practically gave it away. Srsly, he was 2 dollars.

I'm not blaming you, it sounds like he died before you could do anything. It's just a sucky situation.

That is a very dumb thing to do. Hamsters need something to chew on at all times, and pieces of wood in their house so they can file their nails down so they also don't get overgrown. It could be, if you're feeding him a lab block type of food, that he's getting his teeth filed that way, or he's chewing on something else in the cage. Hamster's teeth grow continually and never stop, so they need something to chew on and keep their teeth filed throughout their lifetime. I'd get a rodent chew toy for him the next time you're at a pet store. If you have him in a wire cage and he's chewing the bars instead, it could cause very severe brain damage.

Poor, retarded hamster.

He prolly wasn't so much friendly, as just too sick to be the evil twat that hamsters usually are.

Yes, but how many people know that? I said "black bear" so people would know what I was talking about.
And these syrian hamsters that are black and rather large (hmm, maybe I could call them black bears for short...) are friendlier than any other variety of hamster I have encountered.

so there.

Cat nail clippers, oatmeal, and kids pedialyte should have been the first thing you did once he was home.

This should be BASIC for anyone who's done their research. Please people, if you're going to try to be a hero, READ UP on it.

You think I don't have cat nail clippers? I have three cats. The little guy was tiny and the tusk was practically attached to his cheek. I read up on it, and most everything I read said that if you felt like you were going to hurt the hamster trying to cut the teeth, wait and take them to a vet. It's just bad luck that it was labor day and nowhere was open.

Not to mention I'm pretty sure he had wet tail too. I honestly didn't expect him to live, I just wanted him to be away from the other hamsters that were torturing him for awhile.

I did give him water with a dropper and some small seeds once we got him home. Didn't think of pedialyte. I don't think dehydration due to not being able to drink was the issue though (probably the possible case of wet tail, if that was the cause) - He loved his water bottle and drank like crazy from it.

No one feels like posting cute hamster pictures? I'll probably go for one who isn't deformed from a hamster rescue this time. Smaller breed preferred, since the tunnels in Li'l Brudder's cage are too small for an adult Syrian. It'll be a few days though, need to wait for the aftereffects of the cleaning to wear off.

And all dogs are dogs, but we still have different breeds. Do you call a poodle a poodle, or do you fucking whine about it not being called a dog? Many dogs have specific qualities as a breed. Border collies tend to be smart and athletic. Bassets are lazy. Rottweilers are protective.

Likewise, yes, black bear hamsters are colour/morphological variants of the syrian golden hamster. However, breeding for specific qualities has led them to exhibit much more ease around people than other variants of the syrian golden. They DO tend to be much more docile than, say, a traditional golden or teddy bear. I have handled literally hundreds of hamsters, and those are the only variant which have never bitten me.
