So I'm thinking of getting a pet parrot, can anyone give some tips or know some good resources?

Well I was wondering if /an/ could help me with that. I'm thinking of a small to medium species, I don't really care if they can 'talk' or not but they can't be too loud lest they bother my neighbors.

Parrots live a loooooooong time.
Be prepared to make a commitment.

If you get one and have any sense of ethics (not likely, being on 4chan), see if the pet store you get the parrot from gets their birds from breeding farms in South America. I say this because on average, breeding farms from that area mass-breed exotic birds and place them in cages far too small for the birds. Typically, only 1 in 10 birds born actually make it to their destination while the rest weren't ever given a chance.

I don't know the right questions to ask, but try and speak with a manager or better yet the store owner to get the truth as to where the birds are from.

I'd recommend a cockatiel, especially if you've never had a parrot before. They're on the smaller side but they're very easy to keep and train, plus they only live about 15-20 years (vs. 60+ with a larger species).

> but they can't be too loud

Well that rules out pretty much all parrots. Try maybe parakeets or blockatiels.

Both my parakeets and blockatiel have learned to bark. BARK.
And they never fucking stop once they start.

I'm sure my neighbors could hear them when they do.

I remember I once had parakeets that would not shut the fuck up. They are definetly not quiet birds.

It's fine if they're loud, just not loud enough to annoy people beyond a wall, across a yard and through another wall.

Then again, the only time my neighbor's told me to quiet down is if I have something playing with bass so actually I think I'm fine when it comes to noise
