My cat got into a fight with an opossum the other day
he got a scratch on his back. I put some neosporin on it. thats healing nicely but this morning (2 days after fight) to see him licking at his paw under the shoulder excessively so i take a peek and find this.

I am in a total panic
I dont think its hurting him as he is acting normal aside from licking it from time to time.
the vet is not an option at all as we have no money at the moment and i cant even pay 10 bucks for breakfast

What can i do on my own to help heal this other than the obvious clean it.

Not too much... clean it (clean towel with warm water, maybe add some alcohol though this will probably drive the cat batshit crazy).
Try to keep your cat from lickin it too much.

That may help.

It doesn't look infected yet, try to keep it that way (clean it regulary, but be as gentle as possible so it gets a chance to heal).

Are you sure it was an opossum? They're usually only around during the night and usually don't get into fights with cats. If it was an opossum, you probably don't have anything to worry about - they rarely carry any diseases.

I don't know why people are being douches without giving advice for kitteh, but you sound like you're hiding something.

Firstly I know to trim the hair around the area -- but I don't know if you want or can do that yourself

>Step 3: Flush the cat's bite wound thoroughly by pouring 3 percent hydrogen peroxide into it. Do not use any other antiseptic. This is one of the major complications of a bite.

But I do suggest the collar too
When my dogs got stitches we had to keep the area dry but not bandaged

If you don't already have a collar you can make a temporary one

Google homemade elizabethan collar for videos as well

I think even a cleaned plastic milk gallon or soda bottle could work

Well I just think you have a genuine money problem and then I'd rather see you at least do something for it than just hope for the best. Doesn't mean that I think you maybe shouldn't have gotten one at all. On the other hand, some poor people take better care of their pets than people with broader budgets.

I just get a little sick with all the 'you shouldn't have bought one' bullshit. Yeah, maybe he shouldn't have. Still it's better to at least give him some help to improve the situation, even it's only by a little, instead of just letting his cat take the hit too.

Opossums fight??
>> Anonymous
not 100% sure it was an opossum :/
the main thing that leads me to believe it was an opossum is that the catfood bag that was next to his bowl was totally ripped open with scratch marks all over it and lots of the catfood was gone.
It could have been something else but I dont think so. Actually come to think of it it could have been a racoon?

Keep your cat from licking / bothering it to much so it can heal, keep it clean, anti infective solutions of some sort (neosporin)... Animals are hearty creatures and as long as you keep this clean and it heals I honestly wouldn't worry about it. My grandmothers cat had an actual whole on its throat, you could see the esophagus and it healed alright.

big mistake posting that you cant afford a vet, most of the /an/ fags are going to just sit here telling you that you shouldnt have a pet because they still live off their parents and dont understand the workings of the REAL world and that sometimes shit goes bad and you have no cash..

cats are pretty good at keep wounds clean on their own in my experiance, keep an eye on it and if obvious signs of infection set in then take her to a vet reguardless of money. they wont turn away a sick animal (unless your country as crummy ass vets) and set up a payment plan.

your cat needs some stitches. My friend had a cat with a hole that was 2-3 inches in diameter. It amazingly healed on its own over time, but it started out as a small hole like that. Get a cone or something to stop the cat from licking it. Maybe you can try super gluing the skin back together. You can do some research to see what types of epoxies doctors use as substitutes to stitches. It probably wont be that much money though to get a few stitches though.

you nigger, if you can't afford to care for the cat don't buy one.

Possums don't generally carry rabies, their body temperature is too low for it to live in them. If it doesn't heal or looks infected take your animal to the vet.
>> Anonymous
Looks like an abscess. Before you flush the wound I also suggest pushing around the outside of it to get the pus out. You should wear some gloves and get something to dob the pus off with like a paper towel or something. You might need help restraining the cat. The stuff that comes out will be the most foul smelling odor you've probably had the displeasure of going up your nose. Do this and put on the hydrogen peroxide at least twice a day until you can get to the vet.
>> Anonymous
>>331133
Oh, if you have it, I suggest a medical syringe (the ones without the needle) for squirting the solution inside the wound.
>> Anonymous
Oh christ. Please DO NOT super glue the wound shut. If it is an abcess it will need to drain, restricting drainage will just result in infection. If it gets any worse then you'll have to suck it up and ask your vet about payment plans. Keep an eye on it for now but don't hesitate to bring your cat in if it starts looking iffy.

Cat had his rabies shots? Cat rabies is more common than dog rabies as cats generally aren't vaccinated.
The excessive licking could be a sign of pain and irritation.
The collars are easy enough to make with a dollar (at the most I hope) posterboard setup. If you're too cheap to buy that, shoot yourself. It can easily be cut to fit any size.
Putting peroxide in a wound is debatable. I know at my mother's hospital they stopped doing that as it can force debri deeper in. And the flesh it's 'eaten off'.
Sniff the wound.
Does it stink?
If no, neoporin and put collar on.
If yes, put collar on. Take syringe, irrigate with water. Add some iodine salution to wound, neosporin.
Keep and eye and your nose on the wound. If it doesn't get better...take it to the vet or to a shelter to give to someone who can pay for it. Also..keep an eye out for movement in the wound. You have maggot botflies (usually hordes of them)..and warbles (single maggot) to worry about. Newly hatched warbles are hard to see and don't give the pouches the squirrel exhibits.
