I just discovered a small bees nest in my mailbox. They're basic honeybees and not very aggressive, might be because it's 90 degrees outside. I already stuck my hand in there and took out a letter before I noticed and they weren't very pissed.
So I have an idea, tell me if this would work. I've got incense sticks. If I lit one and stuck it in there (note, it has no door so it's open) I figure they'd leave. I'd come back after a few minutes and knock down the nest.

Would that work? And should I do it during the heat or wait for nighttime when they're supposed to be more passive? It's still gonna be 70 at night anyway.

I'd recommend Raid instead of incense. I wouldn't risk the getting stung by lots of bees thing. Where are you located by the way? Just cause they weren't aggressive when you grabbed a letter doesn't mean they aren't africanized.

Kill em all to be sure.

KILL IT WITH FIRE.

Massachusetts, there aren't africanized ones around here. And honestly there's normally a lot of them around and I normally don't care as long as they don't make nests in my mailbox.
Problem with using something like Raid is it works fast, so you have to spray and run. An incense stick is a slower method so they won't instantly get aggressive, that's what I figured.
I mean I've heard smoking out a hive works, I figured it's the same idea. In fact, I hope this way they won't ever come back.
Also, I figure that they didn't attack the mailman who put the letter in either. Surely the hive was there are the time.

In the old days woodsmen would harvest honey from wild bees. They do it with smoke. Apparently it's very effective against them. Incense is safer as it makes more smoke with less fire but I'm not sure if it'll work as well as burning leaves/wood.... Still it's worth a shot, just pop a few stick in there with the lid open so the smoke doesn't put out the incense. If you see any bees buzzing then get out quick.

Also you should know this dosn't kill the bees. It just puts them to sleep. Remove the nest with a stick or wear leather gloves if you want. If you want to be humane about it relocate the nest to an area where it'll be safe from wind/rain.

why do the aggressive bees have to be africanized? that's so goddamn racist

Alright I tried it. I walked up, threw 2 burning sticks in and ran. I stood about 10 feet away and at least one bee flew out. There might have be 3 or so in there.
But it didn't look like I could see smoke coming out of the box so I'm afraid they might not have stayed lit.
Anyway I was too paranoid to stand around and I came back inside. I'll go back in a while.

Damn, I was hoping they wouldn't return to the nest. They're buzzing around plenty out there, but I can't tell if it's still burning cause it's obviously facing the street.

ask a beekeper, he'll get rid of them for you.

No I'm just gonna hit it with raid in a few hours at night. I mean it's like 2 inches big.
I went back out and the sticks were out and the bees were still in there.
It doesn't help that I basically live in what looks likes a junkyard where there's bees nests everywhere. I've learned not to worry about it and they never bother me.

Smoke makes bees return to the nest and gorge themselves on honey, which also makes them docile.

as much as I would like to point out how bad condition the regular bees are in nowadays, I sympathize with you, let the mailman deal with it.

Throw one of those bright-ass strobe fireworks in there with 'em

DO IT FAGGOT

Shit it's midnight and I forgot to deal with it. Too late now.
I'll never get mail again.

Honeybees are becoming extinct

think about it.
>> Anonymous
Well I don't know what kind of bees they are. They were black and yellow and kind of big.
And the reason they're going extinct is because of disease related to poor environment, not because they can't make nests in mailboxes.

They sound like yellowjackets. Honey bees would not normally build a hive in a mailbox.

Was the hive enclosed like a football, or was it open? Could you see the combs?

you can see the combs. Like I said, it's tiny.

Bees are fucking adorable. Plant some flowers near to the hive and use their honey.

Kill yellowjackets they are nasty buggers

Incense sticks will probably burn out if you can't set them up properly, but cones would probably work in terms of staying lit, and they're pretty smokey. No idea if it would affect the bees though.

Yeah, bees are good, but not in your mailbox.

We had a birdhouse in the backyard. Birds didn't use it, but when we took it down to move, we found a wasp nest.
>> Anonymous
Well I didn't take care of it last night and now there's mail in my mailbox.
I'll never be able to read my mail again ;_;
I wonder if the mailman even noticed?

I love you. And OP just use a fucking hose and spray the inside of the mailbox. Or light a piece of paper on fire with a lighter and throw that fucker in there. Or just throw a firecracker in there.

If its a large swarm and they don't leave in a few days, call a beekeeper and see if they'll buy it from you. You can make some pretty good money.

>>276973
turns out they're not honeybees
and there's only like 3 bees in there
but I can't do anything now because there's mail in there...I'm eventually going to have to man up and take the mail out veeeery slowly.

Bees are hairy. Wasps are not.
Bees sting once. Wasps sting repeatedly.
Bees make honey. Wasps do fuck all.
