An older dog adopting a puppy? Anonymous
Sup /an/?

I wanted to tell you a little story and maybe after hearing me out you'll help me with this problem I have, anyway...

See, today at about 1AM (it's 3:30AM now where I live) I was heading back home from my girlfriend's house and it seems that some bastard left a puppy on a high-traffic road to get rid of it - for good. It was just standing there, all sad and whiny...

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm probably a bad person, surfing /b/, laughing at other people suffering, I don't usually give a shit when someone dies. But I do hate people that treat animals badly with passion... And yet I can try to act though all I want, but I just couldn't stand it - I brought the puppy home, almost with tears in my eyes.

The puppy is quite well fed, so I guess someone threw him out, because he was chewing on clothes, boots etc. It isn't sick from the looks of it, other then the fleas (dear God, I can't even sleep in my own bed now, not to mention he pissed on it a couple of times already) - for which I'll have to buy a shampoo or something tommorow.

I think it's a labrador retriever puppy, a bitch I believe - two weeks old maybe? Thing is, I already own a dog - a four years old Fox Terrier - also a bitch.

Thing is, I'm kinda scared that my dog will do something to the puppy. It seems quite cheerfull about the new mate, but she constantly "attacks" him. It's not like she wants to kill the other dog, but she takes his head into her jaws and puts him down on the ground with her paws... Also I think she wants to play with him like it's an older dog and I'm scared that she will hurt him.

For a while I thought that she will adopt him or something, but when he finally went to sleep like an hour ago, she keeps constantly watching him from about a meter distance. When I try to grab the puppy, she runs after me, wiggling her tail and barking, so I guess she likes him, but... Why does she keeps the distance?

Help me out /an/, I want to help this dog get a loving home, but I'm afraid that something will happen if I just go to sleep - and let me tell you, I'm VERY tired... ;___;

probably just trying to play with it, dogs can be rough

it probably knows it's a baby, but still be careful when the two are around, ALWAY monitor them if they are together
when you're away or something, make sure they are keep seperately

if it were two weeks old I doubt it's eyes would even be open. if it was a well fed pet it is probably around 8-10 weeks, I'd think

If it -does- look young enough that it hasn't been weaned yet, then you should go to the local petstore and pick up some puppy milk for him. From the way you describe him though, he sounds like he's old enough to eat normally.

Sounds like your current dog is just trying to establish her dominance, and make sure the little one is aware of this. Unless the new one does something stupid, or you show it favour over your current, its unlikely that anything will happen in the immediate future. Just have to be careful.

thats...interesting.

Well, the puppy eyes are open and he eats normally, so he must be older, sorry for all the confusion. It's just that he's very small.

If they are fighting for dominance - lol? A Fox Terrier bossing around the big labrador - well that would be kinda silly in the future I think... :)

If she's a puppy then you can't use over the counter flea medications for her. You have to go to a vet.

First, take the puppy to a vet for a check up.

And even though your older dog is just playing around, never leave them alone just the two of them. Accidents could happen so rather put the puppy in a separeta room when they are home alone.

Exactly. Adult dog is saying "Look, bitch, I'm the boss. You may be bigger one day, but this is my house. You can eat my food, but it's still MY food." Doesn't matter if the adult is a small dog.. thats even more dangerous, because they tend to have big egos without the size to back them up. Big dogs can crush bone with one bite, but little dogs bite faster. It's a good sign if the adult licks the puppy's ears and tries to groom him.

Seconded. Don't leave them alone together.

Your terrier is jealous, that's why it runs to you barking when you go and pick up the lab.

>bitch
TEEHEE!

Your current dog is asserting dominance over the new one, like several posters have said already. Don't give the puppy more attention than your current dog. I have two dogs, one of them older than the other, and if I try to pet the younger dog, the older one will worm her way under my hand and push it away. She does the same thing when I try to pet the cat.

Same thing happened when I got my Dal pup. The malamute adopted him as her own (got the shock of her life when he clamped onto one of her teats) but did assert her dominance. She's still the boss even though he's almost as heavy as her.

Don't worry about it, don't leave them alone till pup gets about 1/4 more larger than the terrier but they should get along fine till pup hits puberty. So get pup desexed as soon as possible too.
