If you don't want your dog to nip too hard, you shouldn't let him nip at all. There's a difference between him accidentally hitting you with his teeth from his open mouth (like when playing) and him biting you. Letting him bite you is undermining your dominance. Besides, it's a pain to teach the dog the difference between "okay" bites and "not okay" bites.
tl;dr: don't let him nip you at all.
