Scavenging Wood Anonymous
I have an old birch tree in my yard and every winter a branch or two falls off it either by heavy ice & snow or this year the guy that plows snapped 1 off with a pay loader. there are also a few maples that got pruned last summer and I saved some of the larger limbs to make walking sticks out of and some small ones as terrane for (tg) stuff.
My question is do I have to worry about tree diseases, I now I can't catch any myself but if a tree is diseased how long will the severed limb carry it? A few days, a month, years?

Hey, look! A fa/tg/uy!

You can be a plague carrier for as long as the wood is green (still alive). After you flay the bark off and let the branch dry out a bit, you should have some type of brush-on carpenter's wood preservative that will seal up any leftover disease and increase the lifespan of the walking stick.
