At the begining of the summer my mother brought home two Green Anoles from her classroom. One died over night. we threw it on the hill behind my house. The other I started taking care of. Put some nice sticks and leafs from outside in its terrarium. I fed it crickets and flies.

A few weeks later I was at the pet store (kahoots. great people) getting food for it and started chatting with the manager. found out that I hadn't been taking very good care of it. apparently the terrarium my mom's school gave her was far, far to small. the gravel in it was to cold for the lizard, and the real sticks and leafs I had put in there could have given it an infection. I immediatly bought a 10 gallon tank, some substrate, new sticks and leaves, and a heat rock.

It was all well and good for a few more weeks. but today, after feeding it some flies from my kitchen, something distracted me (I don't even remember what) and when I was done, I forgot to go back and close the top of the terrarium completely (The lid was just resting on top). A few hours later I was walking by and noticed, not just the terrarium, but the light next to it knocked over.

The Lizard wasn't in the cage

The cat looked satisfied.

I never even named it...RIP: lizard.

I've got a ton of anoles that reside in my backyard and can't help but giggle at the local pet stores that actually sell them

RIP anole

Just as planned...

yeah, my pet anole escaped before like 5 times. when i find it outside it always gets fat from eating bugs.

such a boring pet...a little lizard that runs all over the place and wont let you hold it. i speak from experience

I could hold it. It would just chill on my hand or shoulder or wherever I stuck it. Eat right out of my hand too.

my condolences then

Same here, I just saw a bright green one running away while I was mowing the lawn earlier

you weren't necesssarily taking poor care of the Anole before... the pet store just took you for a sucker, and got you to spend money by telling you you were doing it wrong.

Also, for the record, heat rocks are horribly unsafe, and should NEVER be used. NEVER.

Depending on where you live green anoles in captivity can be a pain in the ass to properly care for and require daytime temperatures between 75-80 during the day, 65-75 at night, a basking spot of 85-90, humidity around 65-70%, and full-spectrum UVB lighting. If you were keeping it in something less than a 10 gallon tank then yes, it was probably way too small, despite what retards on /an/ might say.

I'm the "retard on /an/" who advised that OP was probably taken for a sucker, and I stand by that. How authoritative do you think the store employee was if s/he sold OP a freaking heat rock?

Yes, a ten gallon is a minimum habitat size for the average green anole, but those run $12 or so at most pet stores. Likely nothing wrong with the gravel OP was using as substrate, and the average yard sticks aren't infective or otherwise hazardous, really. Store staff should have sold her maybe a 10 gallon tank, screen top with clamp closures, UTH, and a compact UVB bulb, and advised her on the need for mineral supplementation.

Basically, in addition to the aforementioned tendency to malfunction, lizards are dumb. Often times the thing won't even realize it's being burned, making the whole situation worse.

I've seen lizards have whole limbs slowly cauterized off by the damn things.

They're bad. Get a good full spectrum heat lamp instead, and mount it so it's angled to only part of the tank. It's more than enough heat, and without the risk of the poorlittle bugger winding up a multiple amputee.

Mercury vapor lamps are terrible for small terrariums unless you're actually trying to cook their occupants- you're supposed to hang the thing a full foot above the basking spot anyhow- and incandescent heat bulbs don't produce UVB.

agree... four times natural sunlight? No thanks. I'll get my UVB via traditional sources, and my heat from UTHs or CHEs, thanks.

These fuckers are all over my backyard. Good mosquito control though.

Found it crawling down the windowsill. guess the cat didn't eat it. :)

Also, I've unplugged the heat rock and moved the cage closer to the window for natural light.

Unless you leave the lid off and don't have a screen or glass in the window, its useless. Buy a full-spectrum fluorescent or compact fluorescent.

I used one of those full spectrum bulbs that fit a standard light socket, plugged it into one of those reading lamp things with the mechanical arm, and pointed it at an angle at one side of the tank.

Seemed to work just fine, and the hyperactive iguana that lived in it didn't seem to be having any troubles at all.

How long did that 'work just fine' and where is that iguana now?
