So, I was wondering what the best pet for a college student would be. It can't be a dog or a cat cause I don't have the time or the living space for one and not a fish cause they suck. I'm thinkin hamster, what do you all think?

Hamsters are peabrained, mean, biting little things and die within a year or two. If you want something that is the same amount of work and takes up about the same amount of space but is friendlier and more intelligent, get a rat. Males will chill with you and females will tend to run around a bit more.

They still die in two years though, and watch out for mammary tumors on girl rats.

Or on a completely different route, you can try a bird. Budgies/parakeets are cheap, about the same intelligence as rats, as cute as hamsters, and live MUCH longer than either.

Get an asian girlfriend. They're hardly as intelligent as hamsters but stink somewhat less. Also, most can cook, wash and iron your clothes and take out the trash.

Gerbils make a great first pet. They don't bite and they're really cute and friendly. If you get a gerbil though you'll have to buy two or more because they are social creatures and need another of their kind around no matter how much attention you give them.

I breed rats and I do not think that they would be a good college pet. Rats are social creatures so you'll be wanting to get more than one. Some rats are fickle and will bite you hard. Also, they tend to smell a bit and their living quarters take up a lot of space.

I second the gerbils. Two of them is preferable. Adorable little critters. With some training, they can be petted. And they have furry tails!

I must have gotten a mutant hamster then, because mine wasn't a 'peabrained mean biting little thing', and he lived for about 5 years. Mork (yes, that was his name, stfu I was like 12) was a cool dude for a hamster. He had a three-story wire cage with little ramps and stuff to chill on, and he used to actually dangle from the bars at the top of the cage and go across them like monkey bars of death. (Then again he also used to barrel roll down the ramps of the landings for amusement, too.) The guy also used to love one or two dry Kix cereal in the morning before I went to school - and he used to chill on my shoulder all the time when I was watching TV. Also used to sleep on top of his house like Snoopy. On the other hand a friend of mine got gerbils as her boyfriend is allergic to cats/dogs, and had some trouble with them dying within weeks of getting them home, likely because of improper care at the pet store.

Rats need as much attention as dogs to be really 'beneficial' pets, especially if you wanna handle them. They're intelligent for rodents and some can be taught tricks and stuff. I've been wanting one for quite some time - but cats + rat (especially my outdoor cat who already brings me dead mice) = catering.
