Im saying, very basically; the apprehension (fear) of being left out and not getting the reward (paradise, afterlife, community, etc
) makes people pull themselves together and not act as selfishly as they normally might. Everyone needs something positive to believe in. Also - Its trusting in something positive that inspires to do good, and religion is one of the most universally enduring things to believe in.
