I have a 10-gallon heated tank. I had three bala sharks and they all died from lack of space. What kind of freshwater fish would be happy in such a small tank?

Betta.

Also, small space wouldn't kill bala sharks, poor water conditions would.

That's what the guy at the fish store told me. They were doing this twitchy thing like they were swimming but standing still. He said balas get something similar to claustrophobia.

Actually, yes, bala sharks WILL DIE due to small space. What the fuck, they grow up to a foot long.

Uh, OP, just get a school of 4 zebra danios or something. Seriously, nothing above 4 inches is going to be happy in a ten gallon..

Yeah, I don't mind that at all. Just a few small fish that are pretty to look at. Zebra danios are one option, anything else?

I'm assuming that you'd want a school of fish, so any small tetra that's one or two inches long would fit in a 10g as a school of five. Neon tetra, black neon tetra, glowlight tetra, pristella, serpae, columbian etc etc. You could also fit a similar school of harlequin rasboras or cherry barbs.

Wouldn't recommend livebearers, but guppies are pretty hardy fish. You might want to stick with an all-male batch if you get them, unless you can trade in their babies for store credit or something.

If you want a single fish, a single male dwarf gourami would be very pretty in a tank. If you wanted bottom dwellers, about 4 corydoras catfish would be happy in a 10g.

If you have any questions, go ahead and ask.

Well, I was assuming that they weren't ALREADY fucking 12 inch bala sharks. The ones you get at the pet store are like 2-3 inches or smaller. I'm also assuming this tank is new and they weren't in there for years or anything. But shame on me for assuming the OP wasn't a COMPLETE fucking moron. You can keep a fish in a fucking drinking glass if you can manage to keep the water perfect. Also, 90% of the time, the people at the pet store have no idea what they're talking about.

You are a fucking retard. Stop trying to give advice.

I think that what the guy in the pet store held some truth. Never had a bala shark, but I've heard they're pretty avid swimmers. Imagine keeping a husky as a dog, and never walking/exercising it. Same concept--the lack of swimming space could have started to cramp them at a small size, leading to a failure of general health blah blah blah.

Your mother doesn't seem to think so.

Haven't you ever heard of the goldfish that they keep in bowls in Japan? They lives for years and years because they change the water every day and keep the water quality perfect all the time. I didn't say it would be happy, but that doesn't mean it's going to die.

You're the retard. A little baby bala shark would have plenty of room to swim in a 10 gallon tank until it outgrew it. I've been keeping fish for about 14 years and never had any problems with them because I actually do my research.

OP here. To answer everyone's questions, I had the balas for about a year. I got 3 originally, each about 2-3 inches long. One died about 9 months later and the other two 3 months after that. When they died they were 4-5 inches long.

My main question is, what small pretty fish would do well in a small heated tank?
