I'm having a hard time figuring out where this fucking goes. Bonsai fags I need some help doing a mother fucking hardwood cutting of tree in my local park. Do I get a full branch or a leaf stem? And what's the best potting mixture? Other sites say to use sharp sand, can I use the sand at the playground?

It is probably best to just go to a bonsai shop and buy one of the rooted beginner kits. Go with the Juniper.

I heard those are made of fail and more likely than not they're doomed to die. Plus I really want the experience of caring for my bonsai from rooting.

Best thing is to go to a Japanese nursery and attend classes there. If you're LA there's a nursery in Sawtelle that has classes.

the junipers are amde of fail and noob, they are ground covers anyway and look bonsaish without doing anything but trimming them. They die because people keep them inside. So will your hardwood. There are not many trees that will live inside all the time, thus most bonsai are kept outside most of the ime and are only brought in periodically for display.

Anyway, Ideally you want a part of the tree much more than a leaf stem. A branch with a little character to it.This looks like some good info with pics

I would think playground sand should be fine. Ideally you should use root hormone so it'll root, you just need to keep it from molding.
