Hello, dog owners of /an/.

I was just wondering, when you're walking your dog, and a stranger comes up wanting to pet it.
Do you think it's polite to first ask "Oh, what a cute dog. May I pet it?", or do you think it's unnecessary?
Do you think it's rude to pet it without asking for a permission first? Like "oh what a beautiful dog! What breed is it? *pet pet*"

What if, you go to a store and leave your dog outside. When you come back outside you find a someone petting it. How do you react?

Sorry for bad English.

If it's someone elses dog that I don't know I'll ask, but if it's my dog I don't mind and neither does my dog.
It's always good to ask, you could end up bitten or abused.

Pretty much the same here.. my dog is friendly as all-get-out, and I don't mind if people do just go "AWW*petpet*", but doing that to any dog without asking if it's friendly or not it a quick way to lose a hand.

Exactly.

Always ask, for your own personal safety. I have a rescue dog that was severely abused as a puppy, and he's never truly recovered. He's a sweet floppy boy around me, but snarls, bites, lunges, at ANYONE that tries to comes too close.

My dog is the same. The shelter we adopted him form told me he was fine with people, but would bite because he's easily suprised/angered. With especially agressive dogs I think muzzles might be a good, but if someone owns an agressive animal they should have the sense to say "be careful, he bites."

you really SHOULD ask if you want to pet someone else's dog, if not just to have fucking manners, but i really dont mind if it's mine..if you're bringing it out in public it should be somewhat trained/socialized. but yeah, its very rude and dangerous to pet someone's dog without asking.

what really gets me is when i'm walking my dog and someone else has theirs off leash and they come running up to attack me/my dog...its happened a couple times with the owners acting like its no big deal, "OMG GET BACK HERE" and their dog doesnt listen...their pets should be taken away imo.

When I walk past someone walking their dog, if the dog stops as I walk past I will generally hold my hand out for the dog to sniff first, and then maybe pat him if he doesn't react badly.

Usually I'll just look at it and if it's going crazy running at me to be petted, the owner usually stops and lets me pet it. Thats happened with EVERY dog I've seen being walked around here, and the owner doesnt care and will go on about how sweet their dogs are. however, i learned the hard way not to approach dogs in trucks or cars, lol, when the owners arent around. i feel so sneaky! and sometimes they can be really aggresive. there are a few, though, who are ok. i even kissed one :3

People should always ask before petting.

My dog does not like every random person petting her, especially if she's in an already uncomfortable situation (waiting for me outside the store, stormy weather, etc). She has been known to get angry at people pestering her. Of course, these are the same fucking people that would go up to a dog and start poking it and shit then complain it should be put down if they get bit. Fuckers.

It's just like people I see who have crazy ass little dogs on retractable leads that let them run around and don't stop them from running up and jumping and biting on bigger dogs, who then eat them. I've seen quite a few small dogs get chomped because their owners didn't pay any attention to them and let them wander about freely and go around blind corners without them.

You should ALWAYS ask, regardless if you want to pet their dogs, let your dog meet yours, or whatever.

My dog loves all people and is never bothered by other animals. I got lucky. I don't have to worry about him hurting anyone or anything.
