Butterflies? Anonymous
I live in southern Texas and for the past few weeks I've been noticing a massive population of butterflies fluttering around. Is this a migratory thing? I've only lived here for like a year (I used to live in Houston) and I've never seen anything like this before.

we've had butterflies migrate here through San Diego before, never ran into so many butterflies in my entire life. :x So it's quite possible they're migrating somewhere.

i'm in san antonio and i've noticed the butterflies too. it's insane, they're everywhere. the same thing happened 2 or 3 years ago, so i guess they're just migrating.

Could they have migrated due to the coming of Ike? Or was that just coincidental? I noticed a spike in butterfly activity right after the hurricane (although it didn't pass anywhere near here).

Well, while they were flying through here there were plenty of human/butterfly collisions :)

I live in San Antonio also and their called the American snout butterfly and here is the reason that there is so many:

"The drought effects are more on the invertebrates than the vertebrates, it's more a reduction in the insect parasites; the drought knocks down the insects that keep snouts in check."

With current weather conditions likely to persist the butterflies could be around for a couple of weeks.

This happens every year. I've lived in south Texas my whole life (21 years) and I can't remember a year going by without everyone's car being covered in butterfly splatters.
