Hey /an/ i know this thread has prob been done soo many times but there arent any now. ...
But anyways.. I'm planning on getting a ferret or 2 soon. But ive never owned one before. and want to know what things i should be aware of before gettin one n caring for one.

They stink. Your house will stink. You will stink. Only ferret owners think they don't, and all ferret owners who actually enjoy having them as pets are insane.

They get in to everything. EVERYTHING. You wouldn't believe the places these guys can fit in to. If you are messy, do not get a ferret.

If you're already planning on getting one without knowing what you need to, you're doing it wrong.

Op here. i do kno they smell but it doesnt bother me that much. n im not messy n i aware how they can get into things. but i was wonderin about feeding bathing how they should be kept in the cage n stuff

Well. They're good at figuring things out. However, they have a hell of a time getting to high places unless there is something they can climb with. keeping them in cages varies. They are not an animal to be caged. If you plan on keeping it in a cage for long periods of time make damn sure you have a second ferret with it.

Feeding is easy. Give it food. When it runs out, give it more food. Keep the water fresh.

Bathing even easier. Unless it rolls around in something it shouldn't then don't bathe it. Maybe once a month. If a ferret it bathed to much it's skin will dry out and it will stink even worse as the oils for it's fur will get released more and more.

They're simple pets. Easier to care for than dogs since they can be litter trainned. Give them attention and give them food. Also be prepaired for at least one expensive vet visit in it's life. Otherwise you'll have them a few years and put them down when it gets sick and you can't afford to help them.

This is very important and very commonly misunderstood. The more you wash protective oils from the coat, the more the body works to produce more oil. I never bath my ferrets unless they find their way into the trash or something.

Be aware that they can get intestinal blockages very easily and this usually requires surgery. Most ferrets love to eat rubber, pencil erasers, etc, that can send them to the Evet. Speaking of which, you should get the directions to your closest emergency vet that sees ferts. I guarantee you'll have at least one after hours emergency over the course of your ferrets' lives.

just don't give them shit names

my neighbors son named his ferro, then his mom died of cancer and they moved away....

Odor is closly related to the quality of the diet. In short, by-product/corn based foods (Marshall, VitaKraft, the cheap 8-in-1) maximize odors, while high quality, meat based foods reduce the odor significantly. My fav is Innova Evo, but there are a lot of others out there. Also, cloth bedding is your friend.

Oh yeah, get a pair. They like a buddy to snuggle with, plus if you're too busy to interact with it, it'll have a friend. Here's my two girls on a chair. After a few hours of play time, one will fall asleep and the other will come and find her and curl up with her.

They smell slightly musty. Anyone who really thinks they stink is an overly sensitive pussy.

WORST PETS EVER.. I had two I wanted to kill them within the first month. They look cute behind glass at the pet store sure but when you get home they are nasty little fuckers who shit in your house and chew up your belongings and smell like piss regardless of how much you clean them or their home.

Ferrets poop a lot, and pee even more. Their urine has a strong odor, though clumping litter can help minimize it. You'll need to clean their litter frequently, because unlike cats, they don't bury their crap -- it just sits there, piling up and stinking until you scoop it. Did I mention that they poop a LOT?

Ferrets suck. They get pancreas disorders and you have to give them steroids which they hate the taste of. They also smell terrible and shit all over, or when they aren't shitting on your floor, they're wiping their asses on your carpet. They are also boring. You should just get a cat, or a houseplant.

WORST PETS EVER, go fuck yourself Steve

Wow, so obviously the same person, it's not even funny. At least try to mix it up a little, guys. Some misspellings, maybe a post or two with no caps and/or punctuation, or something. Uncreative retard is uncreative and retarded.

ok, here's the deal.

ferrets don't really smell unless your nose is within 6 inches of them. what smells is their shit. but as long as you scoop their litter box on a daily basis(2 minute job) it's not noticeable.

like has been said before, don't bathe them too often. my ferrets haven't had a bath in 6 months and they don't stink at all.

be sure to wash their bedding/blankets and shit once a month or so and you won't smell them at all.

my wife and i have 5 ferrets at the moment. 3 are ours, and we're fostering the other two. one of them is just a baby and is VERY skinny. once they're healthy they'll be going to a woman who is a client at the vet clinic my wife works for who recently lost her ferret to an insulinoma.

whatever you do feed your ferrets good food. Zupreem, (premium)8-in-1, and innova evo are great brands. if you feed them marshal farms food their shit will stink 10 fold. it really is awful food and it pisses me off that all of the pet stores that sell ferrets recommend marshal farms food just because the ferrets they sell are from marshal farms

my ferrets are litter trained so i don't know what the fuck you're talking about.

Why would you fucking get a boy/girl pair of any animal?

HELLO WELCOME TO NATURE, WHERE IF THERE IS A GIRL ANIMAL AND A BOY ANIMAL, THEY WILL MATE AND MAKE BABIES

THEY WON'T STOP MATING JUST BECAUSE YOU ASKED NICELY

THIS ISN'T ROCKET SCIENCE

There is always a chance that, in some animals, males are prone to fight when put together. And, in some cases, females can also fight when together. And you can neuter things, dipshit. He just wanted to know if there were any behavioral issues regarding genders, like how you can't keep two male Bettas or hamsters.

>>200285

spaying and neutering, motherfucker, do you speak it?
>> Anonymous
>>200460

You can't keep two female (Syrian) hamsters either. Syrians are solitary. Male/female dwarf hamsters can be kept in sex-specific groups.

Maybe you're thinking of mice? Male mice can't be housed together.

I work at Petco. Our ferrets are from Marshall Farms. The only reason anyone at our store recommends the Marshall food is due to the fact that is what they are used to eating. I honestly don't recommend it myself though since I did notice the difference in smell from my ferret who I feed Innova Evo.

My ferret is a Marshall ferret, but next time around I'm going to be looking for a breeder. He is a rescued ferret who is already over 5 years old and has Insulinoma. He doesn't have very long to at this point.

Considering a non-spayed female ferret has a good chance of dieing if she doesn't mate when she goes into heat... yeah. spaying at the least.

thank you and that was what i meant obviously id have them neuter or spayed. And im a girl by the way :p not a he

Girl ferrets HAVE to be spayed before sale because if you don't breed them once they go into heat, they WILL DIE. So it's likely you'll have a spayed one when you get it.

I have 2 girls and a boy, and I have no problems with dominance or anything.

I will say this: Can you devote a lot of time to potty training? Some ferrets don't get it for weeks, and some NEVER get it. You need to be prepared to treat them when they do it right, throw them in the litter box when they aren't using it (which means watching them while they play) and picking up the poop and putting it in the litter box.

Litter training is hard work...

why do we only keep ferrets for pets? i want a weasel. how well do otters do out of water?
