Say, /an/...

How feasible would you guys say it would be to get a snake used to a diet of raw meat? As in, chopped meat, not rodents.
>> Anonymous
Very difficult and pointless, unless you're trying to kill it. If you can't feed it whole rodents or other appropriate foods then you have no business owning one.

I'm being mostly hypothetical.

Either way, I wonder. If you could get a snake to eat cow, what would be the problem of that against mice? Plus, I've heard of a few people feeding meat to their snakes. I just wonder what would be the problem with it.

"As in, chopped meat, not rodents."

That would depend entirely on the species of snake and how closely your region (and the enclosure) matches it. You should always have some variance in the enclosure and a basking spot (where it can warm itself to digest its foood) but if your region is the same as the snake's, you probably won't need more than a small heat lamp and a full-spectrum fluorescent.

I don't know much about this type of snake, but with corn snakes it's usually better to stick a heating pad under one half of the enclosure instead of a heat lamp, since they can get really hot really fast...but again, different species.

Heating pads are terrible regardless of species.

Not at all. Just don't get the ones that adgere to the bottom of the tank and can cause damage in case of a spill. The ones that simply lay under the tank work great when you're establishing a variance because the heat rises up and out.

Hot rocks are absolute shit though.

Feasible, but I think the snake would lose some vital nutrients by not eating a whole animal. Meat is just the meat, whereas when a snake eats a rodent (whether frozen or live), they also get its stomach contents, organ meat, etc. which is also important.

This man speaks the truth. The bones are especially important. Many reptiles suffer from metabolic bone disease, which is caused by calcium deficiency. If you feed "meat" only and no bones, hair, etc, then that would become an even more major problem.

Nearly everyone I know who has corn snakes uses heating pads for them. Most stick the pads to a sheet of glass and mount the enclosure on top of that, so it's not as direct.

And yes, heat rocks are shit, as well as very dangerous for snakes..

Ive seen the scars that mice leave on snakes when they are fighting back. I prefer pre-killed for safety reasons. As long as the mouse was warm and on hemostats with some wiggly movements the snakes did not mind one bit. They were just as enthusiastic either way.

Tiger snake breeders I know offer their snakes chunks of beef or turkey now and then.

Buuut Tiger snakes will eat almost anything. It's just a little something to add fat to the snakes during breeding and egg-laying seasons.

And Tigers are EXTREMELY hot, so I don't advise anon to go out and attempt to aquire one...

Apart from that--

I only have one snake, a Kingsnake, a WC I caught myself some years back. Everything else is Varanids for me, and I swear by FT rodents for my monitors.

Rodentpro.com is your friend.

Unless you're me and work in the pet industry, in which case you realize how much the public is ripped off daily on the cost of reptile feeders...

rodenpro is great. I used to get mice for my ornate horned frog from them. MUCH cheaper than the local pet store!

its just better if u feed it live or dead rats.. rats are better then mice to... dont no why but i was told that buy one of the dudes at this snake shop called N.E.R.D in NH

snakes are programmed to eat mice, not red cubes

but maybe you could stuff all the chopped meat into a mouse costume and wiggle it around.
if your snake was stupid enough i think hed go for it.
genius:)

Holy shit dude. I could buy a gigantic fucking guinea pig for less than a tiny little mouse at petco. This site is amazing.

tiger snakes don't lay eggs, you dont have a tiger snake

Tigers don't lay eggs, dolphins do. It is a dolphin snake.

Definately never said I had a tiger snake. In fact, I'm pretty sure I stressed in my post that the only snake I have is my King but I do keep Varanids. Savannahs and Blue-Tails and Quince and Argus and Ackies, oh my!

But yeah, the egg-laying bit was an error on my part. I was dead tired when typing that and not paying attention to what I was writing.

My apologies.

Thanks for pointing out anon's shitty reading comprehension abilities, but I'm a she, not a he.
