A few nights ago I found two of these spiders in my bathtub at about ten o'clock at night.

On the scale from Not Threatening to Motherfucking Bigass Spider there two were at about an 8.

They sat there fairly placidly as I snapped away at photos for about half an hour, even when the flash went off. Anyone know what kind of spider this is?
I'm from Vancouver BC. It's not a recluse.

No spiders were harmed in the taking of these photos. They were cupped and released afterwards.

Yea, you're right, it ain't no recluse

ITS A FUCKING BROWN RECLUSE

RUN OP, RUN WHILE YOUR LEGS ARE STILL ATTACHED TO YOUR DEGENERATING BODY

Those are rare migratory hobo recluse spiders!

You let them loose in the wild after having them trapped in your tub where you could easily kill them with fire then nuke the site from orbit to be sure?

You monster!

I don't know, but I live in the lower mainland, and for years I've taken comfort in the notion that there were no huge, nasty spiders in this region of the world..

Amateur, OP clearly described a rare migratory hobo fame-seeking spider.

probably some variant of a wolf spider, they cover the North American continent, love chilling in dim, cool parts of the house, and can get pretty goddamned huge.

Also, BC has black widows, which are not huge but can kill you. Sleep well.

I'm fucked, aren't I?

Ah, but OP, BC and the pacific northwest are home to large spiders. However, these tend to hide under houses so you do not see them. I've seen them a couple of times, and their messy tunnels of doom and large, hairy bodies do freak me out.

I'd say the one you have is probably the Giant House Spider. They fight the Hobo (which are harmful, unlike the Giant House Spider) spider, so they're not too bad.

Christ but do they look sinister. I'd just keep those crazy ass house centipedes, at least I then I would know for sure they were harmless to me.

Thank you for your pictures, but do you happen to have pictures from the above? Spiders often have specific patterns in their back.

Let's see...

Closest I can get to overhead. It does have a pattern on its body.

In The Netherlands we call them "house spiders".
They are fairly common in houses, but you rarely see them unless they get trapped in a bathtub or sink.
They catch their prey by running after it, which is a funny sight.

They are awesome creatures keeping your house free of insects. Please set them free and enjoy their awesomeness!

Had one quite similar looking spider crawl down out of her corner in my room, onto the floor, and up and onto the bed where I proceeded to yell at her until she removed herself from my bed, with haste. She returned to her corner.

I keep them around to eat all the annoying insects away. Pretty nice, I haven't been bitten... yet...

good work man keep that bitch in her place

Oh god OP, how can you cup that thing? I would be screaming and running out of my house like a little girl

Listen to this man!

To OP, I'm in Burnaby... the guy's right just a Common/Giant House spider (aka. Wolf spider to everyone else that doesn't know what it really is)... they're harmless but may bite at night if they can access you and you're rolling around in bed. If it does it's just two small bumps and a small soreness on location. Other than that they'll scatter to dark areas and freeze at odd moments. Largest one in my house ever had 5cm legs unfurled. Cup and release or hairspray'll do it; good luck.

Why are people so afraid of spiders?

90% of the time they're confused and wondering where the hell they are, I think. 10% probably being 'im hungry where can I eat'

We likely look scary as shit to them, being huge in comparison, with mouths full of teeth and long groping hands

Because 100 000 years of evolution has hard-wired our hindbrains to be terrified of spiders and snakes? I've never been bitten by either and I'm not particularly frightened of either (although I'm very wary until I know whether or not they're venomous) but still whenever there's a slither or a skitter out of the corner of my eye I jump. It makes evolutionary sense to be scared of something that can kill you.

I dunno, I don't see much sense in being scared of something when there's no reason to be

it won't kill you unless you give it a reason to

But there's plenty of reasons to be afraid of snakes and spiders, at least back in the hunter gatherer days, where contact with these things was much more brutal and direct. When you evolve with this constant threat the instinct doesn't go away with a mere two hundred years of city living.
>> finfag !cMsqVR/LtM
Yeah, my sister is really scared of spiders and runs screaming whenever she sees one. I on the contrary are not so scared but fuck if they surprise me, more than often I smack them when they do that. Its a reflex.

So youre saying, that humanity has lived in cities, villages etc for only 200 years?
>> Anonymous
>>304346

Oh, don't nitpick. Humans have had cities for thousands of years but it's only over the last two or three hundred or so that they've become huge monsters that you couldn't walk across in a day. What was meant is that the current degree of separation of humans from what's currently called 'nature' has only been around for a few centuries at most.

except humans are animals and cities are now about of nature, IF THESE FUCKING BROWN RECLUSES DON'T LIKE IT THEY CAN JUST GEEET OUUUUUT
