okay /an/,
I was on my way home from work today, about 5:30 in the afternoon. The weather was great and I had my windows down and sunroof open just cruising along a straight country road, doing around 60. All of a sudden, I feel this awful sting just below my elbow. Insects freak me out, especially ones with stingers. Even though I didn't see what had actually stung (or bit) me, I flipped the fuck out. I screamed and started swatting at the air and was swerving all over the place. Finally I slowed down and tried to find my assailant in my car, but it was nowhere to be seen. I had no choice but to drive the rest of the way home terrified of being stung again. So far I've just put Neosporin on it. The pain itself only lasted about 30 seconds, but there is a large bump on my arm now. It sort of looks like a mosquito bite that's swollen because of scratching. I checked for a stinger and there wasn't one. So, /an/, what did this to me? The only thing I can think of is a wasp. But wouldn't it be hard for a flying insect to land on my arm and sting me if I'm going 60mph and the wind is whipping around inside my car?

Very well could have been a wasp, they tend to bite before stinging. There also could have been a spider hiding in your car. Who knows.

okay /an/
I was on my way home from a friend's house in Canada, about 3:00 in the afternoon. The weather was hot and I had my windows down and sunroof open just cruising along a two-lane highway, doing about 55 mph. All of a sudden, something hits me in the chest. I look down, and there's this huge stunned hornet lying in my lap. I don't much care for insects, especially ones with stingers. So I put my turn signal on, pulled over to the shoulder, got out of the car, and brushed the hornet off me and it flew away.

True story.

The wasp was probably already *in* your car.

Happens to me occasionally (most recently this morning). Every summer they sneak in and build their little paper nests in the gaps where the body meets the doors...

I live in the apartment right next to the door leading into the building, and I've noticed that there are wasp nests *everywhere* surrounding the door. They were flying all over the place today when I came home. I'm not going to say anything to anyone or do anything about it because I absolutely hate my neighbors and I hope they bump their nest or piss them off somehow and get attacked.

More likely it was a stone or pebble on the road that got kicked up by another car hitting you in the elbow rather than a sting.

Or from your own tires (missed the part about being on a country road)

I've read most of Stephen King's books. I have had no problem with any of them. I have never been able to get through The Shining. It is probably on a list of 5 or so books out of thousands read which I have not finished.
