As Halloween is approaching I thought I'd share some horrors with /an/

Today I awoke to find that one of my hissers had molted. That was all fine and dandy until I did a double take and noticed HALF OF IT WAS MISSING. The poor thing somehow got his abdomen ripped off.

He's still alive and moving around just fine.

But the worst part is that the other roaches are taking turns EATING HIM.

wtf

Here's a backside view (or should I say inside view, dohoho).

So /an/, any ideas how this happened?
>> Anonymous

Malfunction in the molting process? I can imagine that he tried to move too soon and ripped himself in two... I don't know arthropods at all.

I wish I had a video camera.

He walked up a stick and into the 'roach motel' (stack of horizontal paper tubes) and then went back to the water sponges to chill. You can just barely see it but his horns are sort of caved in and his exoskeleton is all wrinkly.

I've decided to call him Zombie Jim.

Hay!

Your roaches need more protein in their diet to keep them from eating each other. Dogfood works pretty good usually. It happens most when molting because they are most vulnerable when the new exoskeleton is still soft.

>> Anonymous

Yeah that's a half grown dubia. Best feeder insects ever. It takes almost no effort to start a colony of them. I feed them dog food, apples, carrots, and bread, or whatever I have lying around. They don't smell bad, climb, jump, fly, or bite. They don't even run fast. The babies are small enough to feed to dart frogs or night lizards, and the adults make good feeders for bearded dragon sized animals.
