Goats Anonymous
I've been thinking about getting a goat. It would be a milk producer, but also a pet as they are quite smart and get attached to you.
Also, I would never have the money to keep a cow, so as they say "goat is a poor mans cow".

What does /an/ has to say about goats?

This one in the pic is a Finnish Goat, and that's the breed I would be taking since I live here.

my mom had a pet goat, and when it started headbutting her and her sister, they ate it. I hope you find one that isn't aggressive. Good luck!

Was it a female? I've heard the males can be like that.

I've heard they can produce quite a lot of milk compared to their size. Wich is easy to believe when you look at the size of those udders.

they are awesome.

goats are my favorite animal, but they do stink because they urinate on themselves..
according to a book that i read when i was 9.

I've heard that they are pretty tidy animals, at least compared to sheeps. But I don't really have any experience, so I'm not sure...

Awww, how cute they are! Let's have some more goat babies.

Those poor fainting goats make my heart ache! I once saw this guy on tv and every time he clapped his goat passed out ... aw. I wanted to give that poor goat a hug.

If taken care properly does don't smell. The bucks on the other hand do, because they the have these glands between their horns that they use to mark their territory. If the buck is kept with the does their milk may smell and taste weird.

Bucks shouldn't be kept as pets, thei need many many does around them to be happy. If castrated before they are 3 months old they don't develope sexual behavior (or the smell) and can be kept as pets.

can you spin goat hair?

Goats are not smart, they are incredibly stupid and will try to eat everything. They constantly try to escape, then try to get back in whatever they're enclosed in. My dad used to raise the terrible beasts. Just one might not be so bad. The only good thing about it is that you won't have to mow your grass, but you could get something cool like a donkey to do that for you.

Well, what I know about them is that they get attached to you like a dog if you just pend time with them. But I guess they can be a real menace if you keep a lot of them and can't spend time with them. And I would say it's a sign of their intelligence that they can be so annoying. Stupid animals are usually much easier.
There's a saying where I live "If you don't have anything else to worry about, get a goat." I guess it can be true. But they can be loads of fun too. If you don't have too many :)

You know that you have to make the goat pregnant and have a kid before she'll make milk, right? And she'll dry up as the kid ages, right? Just checking. Most people don't realize/forget that part of milkfarming.

I had a white Saanen goat as birthday present when I was 13; few days later she was already following me like a dog, I can't think of a better pet. The only sad part is that you'll probably have to slay and eat her kids.

Oh, I do know that =) I've seen quite a many cows gicing birth when I was a kid so I am familiar with the facts of life.

I was thinking that I'll get a kid, wait untill she grows up and take her to see a buck. There are pregnant female goats on sale, but I'd like to raise it myself.

I've heard that a good goat can produce milk even two years in a row after giving birth, but it's better to make it have a kid once a year.

I think I will sell the kids if I can.

OP's pic is the prettiest goat I've ever seen.

I had goats when I was younger, and I'd have to say the first pair I had was much better than the last. Started out with this pygmy goat buck kid and a female who was older, and they were sweet hearts. Then we got another pair of females who were older, and the one would never let us touch her. The younger one was much friendlier though. They aren't that mischevious, and I've never been headbutted by one. Only thing that really ever went wrong was that my mom had smores on her fingers once and went to pet them and almost got her finger bit off.
