Friendly protection dog.....? Anonymous
/an/ I've been considering a Cane Corso. This would be my first purebred dog, though I have owned mixed breeds in the past. What I'm looking for is a dog that is both friendly and yet protective. He should be able to protect my house at night and play in the park during the day. I want him to maul the fuck out of a mugger, but let strange children pet him. Is this possible, /an/?

I don't know about the breed you've mentioned,
but a properly trained and socialized German Shepherd would fit your ideals.

A relative used to breed Corsos. The word that best describes them is "goofy". They are sweet, but dumb. And after they drink water they slobber it all over. I didn't find the breed in general to be healthy however. Lots of heart issues.

That is a goddamn beautiful dog. I love how they look with the ears cropped off like that. Like circumcision it's pointless and painful, but looks nice.

Holy shit, my wife and I were just talking about this breed! This dog is very close to what you're looking for, according to what you're asking... however from what we've read so far, they're somewhat aloof around strangers. If you were to get one extremely well-socialized and trained as a puppy however, that should make things much easier for you, as is with most large dogs that fucking idiots are afraid of (read: breed-specific legistlation). There are several videos on YouTube of full-grown Cane Corsi playing extremely well with small children, and they're very well known for serving as family/household protection dogs.

Here's another vote for a German Shepherd.

Jesus-dog!

Anyways, OP, if you want a friendly dog that'll maul muggers and the like, a well trained German Shepherd that's been raised right and socialized as a puppy is a nice choice.

OP here,

Actually I've been debating between a Corso, a dobie, or a GSD for a long time. I think a well bred example of any of them could do the job. But now I have to choose, and it's hard because hell they're all gorgeous.

One problem is that all the great CC breeders seem to be located in the south or west coast. I'm in new england but I would strongly prefer to visit the breeder's home well before any purchase, and I'm sure most good breeders would expect no less of me. So all this travel would cost $$ that I'd rather put towards vetting, insurance, etc.

GSD's/dobe's on the other hand would be easier to aquire but personally I'd like to have a more unique looking animal. Also with GSD's their protective drive can vary strongly between lines and there are many more breeders to sort through. American show lines are probably out (also, I like my dogs with 4 working legs), but I wonder if a dog from ch. working stock would have too much drive for me.

Pit Bull if trained well.
same with rottweilers and German Shepherds.

Bull Mastifs are maybe. I have 1 he is a big baby and lets kids ride around on him and HAS to sleep in bed under the covers or he cries.

Cane Corso owner here.
These dogs are relatively rare for a reason.
They are extremely dominant, stubborn, animal aggressive and difficult and require a strong, knowledgeble and devoted master.
They must be trained very carefully and they need to be given "work" or they will go stircrazy without anything to do. Not the best breed with kids either (most Molossers are great with kids but not these ones) and inherently xenophobic (as in don't expect a lot of friends to come over) NOT a breed for beginners.
I train working dogs incidentally and my Corsos
are manstoppers.

FUCK that, do research on the Giant Schnauzer and you'll realize it's far superior to all other mentioned breeds. Get a GS.

Pit Bulls are awful, awful guard dogs. They're bred to love people. At most idiots who know nothing about Pit Bulls besides the sensationalism and fear broadcasted by media outlets will think twice about breaking and entering.
Of course you could be a nigger who feeds your Pit Bull dead kittens full of Frank's Red Hot and rub their belly with a cheese grater every day while they're locked up 24-7 in the elements to twist the poor dog's brain into something vicious and irredeemable.

family had 3 of these growing up. Were nice to anybody who came into the back yard through the house, but tried to eat the neighbor when he tried to use the fence (put that one down). Think they got a hold of a few cats too.

The other male somehow got a hold of the neighbors dog and pulled it through the fence and ate it (big dog, small hole in fence.. wasn't pretty).

The 2 males were pretty big (don't think they were purebreds), and the female was a bit smaller. All were very good with children, and very nice when they went out of the house. None of em really barked at all, and the males were pretty aggressive when they were in the back yard to anything that got near the fence. They were the silent deadly type, snapped at things that may of peeked over.

GREAT dogs though, pretty ideal actually.. at least the ones we had.

(oh yeah, forgot, but i guess the mailman refused to deliver mail for a while too because he was kind of a bitch around em. Old mailman actually befriended em and they would run up to the new one, which scared the shit outta him)

I have a pit bull he is a fucking pussy too most people.but he hates people that are "off" meaning if they are a druggie or drunk he seem to know wants to get them out of his house.

Fuck you. I've owned Pits all my life, and they make awesome guard dogs. All you have to do if give them encouragement when they bark. They may not attack people, but they sure as hell scare them away.

I vote for the proud Pekingese.
They can smother muggers to death.

I'd say GSD, they are great working dogs, protective, and easy to train. I know many people with GSD and children, no problems there. However, I live in Germany and it's pretty easy to find a good breeder here. If you can't get a healthy, active, well socialized GSD in your area, forget it. You don't want a beauty queen who can't walk or trys to snatch your neighbors kids.

The Dobermann is great, too, a very friendly dog who loves his family and children. I heard they are very, very loyal. And they look absolutely gorgeous.

I can't tell you anything about Cane Corso tho.

At any rate you will have to train your dog very well, because nothing is more dangerous than a half ass trained protection dog.
