How do ferrets respond around certain animals? I ask this because my brother is going on vacation for a few weeks, and he's bringing his gerbil and dog over.

I pretty much know what to do, keep the gerbil in a bathroom or something, away from everyone of the animals, let the dog roam, and my ferret in my room within its cage.

My brother specifically said to keep the dog from the gerbil, as the dog is a Dachshund/Golden Retriever/ Basset hound mix. So it's pretty much bound to eat the gerbil given two seconds with it. So it's understandable that he made that request.

But, now with the ferret. How would ferrets respond around certain animals? I don't mean just dogs or gerbils, I mean any animal.

Ferrets are like dogs, and have very specific personalities. Because of that, it really depends on the ferret and the other animals they are introduced to. Most get along with other animals, and if they are the friendly and playful type they will probably accost other pets to play, even if the other pets aren't interested. Keep them away from rodents (they were bred to hunt them, after all), and I've heard they don't do well with snakes (probably for the same reason). If the ferret hasn't been around a lot of other animals, it might be nervous at first, but they usually come around and become very curious. Cats tend to dislike ferrets at first but will eventually *tolerate* them, and *some* dogs love them. Rabbits will literally die of fright at the sight of a ferret, so never put them together. In most cases besides rodents, you ought to be more worried about how the other animals will react, not the ferret. And never leave them alone together, just in case.
