Hey, /an/.

A few months ago, my parents went shopping at the local flea market and brought home two little feeder fieldmice -- probably no more than three weeks old, no bigger than the last joint of my thumb, not including the tails.

They've actually become quite friendly -- they're both males, so no babies (lucky!), and the bigger one, Mickey, seems to enjoy sitting atop my head or nesting in my shirt pocket.

I'm not sure what species they are, but I'm curious as to what their lifespan should be in captivity. They're fed a seed diet with occasional leafy greens and a couple crickets when we buy them for fishing, and have a large fishtank to live in; we clean the shavings every three days (they're stinky little bastards) and provide plenty of water.

Pic related, kind of. Not my mice, though.

when in doubt used wikipedia =P

I did, heh. But wiki is useless -- apparently people don't keep fieldmice as pets. o_o

Also, weird thing. The other male, Houston, has light grey fur and albino-red eyes. WEIRD shit.

If you put a few drop sof fake vanilla extract in their water their pee stops smelling so bad.

Seriously? I'd love that idea, but I wouldn't put it past most of anon to kill my mouses.
No offense intended -- I fear /b/.

Can you post a pic of yours? Identification of mice is mainly based on appearance.

Failing that, can you tell us your general area where they came from? And what is their coloration like? (especially useful to know the color of their tail, belly, and feetses.

I live in south Louisiana, and they were bought at a flea market so I figure they were local.
The tails are pink -- but the dark male's tail is a dark grey-pink. The belly-color is the same as the all-over furcolor. But their feets are little naked pink things.

One of them is a deep brown-grey color with black eyes, and the other is a pale grey, a bit like a cinnamon gerbil, with red eyes. I'll try to get my phone to take a pic.

Wow, he's telling the truth about Vanilla Extract

http://www.boakingdom.com/rodents.html

""Keeping their cages clean is an absolute must! I use pine shavings which I change every 3 or 4 days. The water bowls get checked twice daily and cleaned out with a bleach/water solution every week. Here's a great secret I learned....add Vanilla Extract (pure or imitation) to the drinking water. The Vanilla will be passed through their digestive systems resulting in 50% less odor from their stools and urine. If you'll be keeping your mice colonies in the house this will help you keep the odors down tremendously! I have about 40 breeding groups that I keep in the house and I can testify to the effectiveness of the Vanilla. Try it, it really works! The Vanilla doesn't have any ill effects on the mice or the snakes they're fed to. I use about 2-3 teaspoons per gallon, or a few drops per drinking bottle. I mainly use only imitation vanilla, it's cheaper than pure vanilla extract and works just as well if not better and it leaves much less residue inside the bottles than pure extract does.""

Whoa! So it has some basis in fact. Awesome. I'mma try it; I'll post sometime. Mickey and Houston will thank you, but they're both male and, well... I think I'm just categorically screwed on this one.
