Rats are awesome. My sister had rats yeeaars back when I still lived with her, and I saw that they were good. Couple of my friends have/had rats and they were most delightful, my gf and I even had them as houseguests for few months. Curious, friendly, affectionate, curious, hyperactive-and-dozy ADHD-style, greedy, oh, and did I mention curious?
My friend was out of town some days during Easter and it was my task to go over to his place and feed'n'water the rats. Two of the four (or five, I don't even know) I had met before, the rest were complete strangers. I was cautious and careful not to scare them and it took no more than a minute for all of them to come sniff my hand. I know they didn't really warm up to me, more like, "oh, I guess he's okay" and went all yipees and yays over the food but the second I made a sudden move, brushing off some crap or something, they went "AAAA OMG WTF", some zipping around the huge cage, some just freezing in place, shaking. I guess I should get acquainted with them some other time with their owner around...
tl,dr: rats rock, they make me laugh

I just got two young hooded females. A rat breeder wants me to breed them with my hairless male, but I are not have knowledge to do so. So I'm doing my homework on rat genetics/breeding at the momment.
Won't breed for awhile though.
These are my first female rats and they are very different from males.

You know, it's that kind of eugenics bullshit that makes me wonder WTF people are thinking. You want to kill it because it's not cute? Well, how would you have felt if your mother, upon birthing your squirmy, naked ass, had yelled, "OMG NOT KAWAIIII, KILL IT" and then proceeded to either do so or toss you in an orphanage?

God, you people in /an/ make me sick sometimes.

Yeah, cause I'm pretty sure she was seriously going to find the rat in that pic and kill it, right?

I'm not talking literally, kid. I'm talking about the idea, the notion behind thinking something isn't worthy of living since it's not cute.

I love feeding rats, it's fun seeing them eat. A rat clutching a slice of banana or a large-ish grape is probably the best thing ever. I had a friend over the other day, and the rats tried to steal her half eaten grilled cheese; it was like seeing a two rat version of the Three Stooges.

Tell people it's a really long-tailed hamster.

About rats - it's a shame they don't live very long. My friend cried her eyes out when hers died.

Kill all ugly animals and humans with fire for a better world.

Yeah, I've been looking at gerbils, but rats are still cooler, so I might as well wait till I move.

WHO KNOWS ANYTHING ABOUT DEGUS?!
>> Anonymous
Degus are like giant gerbil/chinchilla beasts.

They're kinda' fun to watch, the children's museum that I helped with some reptile stuff a while back has a small family group of them. They'd get, like, old cans that coffee used to be in to play with and they'd drag it all over their huge enclosure, roll each other around in it, and stuff.

Not much for being held, though, and they'd usually run away from you if you tried to pick them up. Never really tried to bite, just skittish.

My buddy Zack had them when we were kids. I'm pretty sure you have to buy them in pairs. They're pretty cute, and fun, but really, for all intents and purposes, they're big, less cute gerbils.

I've heard rats easily develop tumors in the later stages of their life - does that happen with gerbils?

I'm kind of wondering because I had two gerbils and they were best buddies, but one day one of them chewed up the other's joints and he died of shock. It was the dominant male that got chewed up, too. Oo

( They were both males, but have always been best friends since I introduced them to each other when they were babies. )

Anyway, usually a gerbil dies after about 3 weeks of loneliness, but this one lived on for another year, then died of old age. I made sure to pick him up and pet him etc. quite regularly, but was that really enough?

Gerbils can be such a mystery. O_o

It's shit like this that keeps me from getting rodents as pets.
